A central tenet of theoretical cryptography is the study of the minimal assumptions required to implement a given cryptographic primitive. One such primitive is the one-time memory (OTM), introduced by Goldwasser, Kalai, and Rothblum [CRYPTO 2008], which is a classical functionality modeled after a non-interactive 1-out-of-2 oblivious transfer, and which is complete for one-time classical and quantum programs. It is known that secure OTMs do not exist in the standard model in both the classical and quantum settings. Here, we show how to use quantum information, together with the assumption of stateless (i.e., reusable) hardware tokens, to build statistically secure OTMs. This is in sharp contrast with the classical case, where stateless hardware tokens alone cannot yield OTMs. In addition, our scheme is technologically simple. We prove security in the quantum universal composability framework, employing semi-definite programming results of Molina, Vidick and Watrous [TQC 2013] and combinatorial techniques of Pastawski et al. [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. 2012].

It is well known that human observation changes the outcome of a quantum mechanics double slit experiment. The observer collapses the wave function and the electron manifests differently depending on whether an observer was present or not. It has also been noted that measuring devices can collapse the wave function but depending on your interpretation of quantum mechanics the measuring device still may be connected to the presence of a human who monitors the device.

I am looking for a thorough summary of the literature and experiments which pertain to animals or plants or cells being used as observers. There is a modest amount of material on this online but I need a worker to conduct a more thorough investigation of the literature.

Also, are there any people who have undertaken extensive research on this already?

Prologue Ava We met in a bar, of all places, a dingy hole-in-the-wall favored by military members from the nearby Navy base in San Diego. I went with a friend from school who was interested in one of the military guys. Before that night, I’d never been there, and I’ve never been back. John was celebrating the promotion of one of his buddies. He crashed into me as I left the ladies’ room and kept me from falling by grabbing my arms to steady me. Just like in the movies, our eyes met, and my spine tingled with the kind of instantaneous awareness I’d only read about but never experienced personally. “I’m so sorry,” he said, gorgeous and fierce in his fatigues. I noticed gold on his collar, a hint of late-day scruff on his jaw and the name WEST in bold black letters on his chest. Intense electric-blue eyes made it impossible for me to look away, even when I was safely back on my feet. “Are you all right?” he asked. Realizing I’d been staring at him, I blinked and reluctantly broke the connection. “I… Yes, I’m fine. Thank you for the save.” And then he smiled, and the tingling began anew. “I’m John.” I shook his outstretched hand. “Ava.” Keeping his hold on my hand, he tipped his head. “You come here often?” “Never,” I said, laughing. “I’m a first-timer.” “What do you think so far?” “I wasn’t impressed until about thirty seconds ago.” As if he had all the time in the world to give me, he leaned against the wall. “Is that right? What happened thirty seconds ago?” I thought about taking back my hand but didn’t. “I was saved from certain disaster by a man in uniform.” “The guy in the uniform is the reason you needed saving in the first place, because he wasn’t watching where he was going. Least he can do is buy you a drink.” “I wouldn’t say no to that.” I was proud of my witty responses and got the feeling he could more than hold his own in the wittiness department. Across the crowded room, I noticed my friend talking to the guy she’d come to see, and her brows lifted in interest when she saw me with John. He guided me to the bar, placing a proprietary hand on my lower back, and told one of the guys to give me his stool. “Yes, sir.” The younger man bowed gallantly to me as he took his beer and moved along. “Do people always do what you say?” “If they know what’s good for them.” His teasing grin kept the comment from being overly cocky. “What can I get you?” Deciding to live dangerously for once, I asked for a cosmopolitan. “Go big or go home,” he said with admiration. “That’s my motto.” I was so full of shit. I wondered if he could tell I was all talk or what he’d think of me if he knew I usually err much closer to the side of caution than the wild side. I wondered if he could tell I was just barely old enough to drink. I’d turned twenty-one only six months earlier. When my cosmo and his Budweiser had been delivered, he offered a toast. “To new friends.” I touched my glass to his bottle. “To new friends.” “So, where’re you from, Ava?” “New York.” “I thought I heard New Yawk in your voice.” I batted my eyelashes at him. “So four years at the University of California San Diego didn’t scrub the New York out of me?” Laughing, he said, “Hardly. I know some guys from New York. One of them is from Staten Island, which is about as New York as it gets. I know New York when I hear it.” “I’m from Purchase, upstate from the city. What about you?” “I’m from all over. My old man is a retired general. You name it, I’ve lived there.” “Where’s home?” “Right here.” He turned that intense gaze on me, and I went stupid in the head. I couldn’t see anything but him. We might as well have been alone in the crowded bar for all I knew. Unlike my friend, who loved men in uniform, I was never turned on by the uniform. Until then. Until John. “You want to get out of here?” I swallowed hard. It wasn’t like me to leave a bar with a man I’d just met. “And go where?” “Somewhere we can talk.” “What do you want to talk about?” He leaned in so his lips were close to my ear. “Everything. I want to know every single thing there is to know about you.”   That’s how we started. We were intense from the first second we met until the last time I saw him five years ago today. I can’t believe it’s been five years since I looked into those incredible blue eyes or woke to him on the pillow next to me or heard his voice in my ear, whispering words that’re permanently carved into my heart as he made love to me. The worst part is I have no idea where he is. I don’t know if he’s alive or dead, being held captive or if he’s living his life somewhere else with someone else. I don’t know, and the not knowing is the hardest thing I’ve ever dealt with. I love him as much today as I ever did. No amount of time could ever change that simple fact of my life. We had two beautiful, magnificent years together, caught up in our own little bubble. He never met my family. I never met his. We didn’t make couple friends. We didn’t talk about the future. We didn’t need to. Our future was decided that first night, and it would take care of itself in due time. I honestly and naïvely believed that. Now, with hindsight, I realize the bubble was strategic on his part. He gave me everything he had to give, including no promise of tomorrow. Five years ago today, we watched the horror unfold on live television. A US-based cruise ship blown up by suicide bombers. Four thousand lives extinguished in a heartbeat. Our world permanently changed once again, our country declaring yet another war on terrorists. After 9/11 we thought we’d seen everything. We were wrong. “I have to go,” he said, grabbing the duffel that stood ready in the front hall closet. He called it his “go bag.” I’d thought nothing of it. “Where’re you going?” “I don’t know.” “When will you be back?” “I don’t know that either.” He held my face in his hands and gazed at me, seemingly trying to memorize my every feature. “I love you. I’ll always love you.” Then he kissed me as passionately as he ever had and was gone, out the door in a flash of camouflage. I never saw him again. I’m not his wife or even his fiancée, so no one notified me of his whereabouts. And three months after he left, when I found a way onto the base in a desperate quest for information, no one there could tell me anything either. I tried to locate his parents and other people he mentioned, but it was like they didn’t exist. I could find no record of a retired general named West in the Marine Corps, Army or Air Force. Furthermore, an exhaustive search for information on the John West I had known led nowhere. No high school, no college, no military service, no nothing. Sometimes I wonder if I dreamed the two years we spent together, doing mundane things like grocery shopping, cooking, watching TV and sleeping together after long days at work. But then I’d remember the blissful passion, the scorching pleasure, the desire that ruled us from the beginning, and I’d know I didn’t dream him. I didn’t dream us. We were real, and he was everything to me. Sitting on the floor in our apartment, surrounded by boxes, I take a few minutes before the movers arrive to memorize every detail of the place where we lived together. I’ve packed his things along with mine, and I’m moving home to New York. Today was my deadline. I gave it five years, and I simply can’t do it anymore. I can’t sit in our home among our things, waiting for something that’s never going to happen. It’s over. It’s time for me to move on. It’s probably long past time, if I’m being honest with myself. And though I know it’s the right move at the right time, that doesn’t mean my heart isn’t shattering all over again as I dismantle the place where we were us. My sister is getting married next month. I promised her I’d be home in time to hold her hand through the festivities. Other than occasional trips home for holidays and other occasions, I’ve been gone more than ten years. I bear no resemblance whatsoever to the girl who left home at eighteen seeking independence from her overbearing family at a faraway college out West. I accomplished all my goals, finishing college, landing a decent job and falling in love with the man of my dreams. I found out what happens when dreams come true and how painful it is when they blow up in your face. It’s time now to set new goals, to start over, to begin a life that doesn’t have John at the center of it the way it did here. The intercom sounds to let me know the movers are here. I pick myself up off the floor and steel my heart for the day ahead. I can do this. I’ve been through worse, and I’ll survive this the same way I’ve survived everything else. Despite my resolve, my eyes fill with tears as I press the button that opens the door downstairs to the movers. It doesn’t take them long to pack my belongings into their truck. I keep with me the things that can’t be replaced—precious photos, gifts he gave me, the clothing he left behind. After taking a final look around the apartment, I pack those boxes into my car, turn my apartment keys into the leasing office and head east, feeling as if I’m leaving behind everything that ever mattered to me. It’s like I’m losing him all over again. I cry all the way through the desert of Southern California and well into Arizona. I relive every minute I can remember, every conversation, every special moment. I think about what it was like to make love with him and wonder how I’ll ever to do that with anyone but him. Maybe I won’t. Maybe that part of my life ended with him, and even though I’m only twenty-eight now, I’m okay with that possibility. Once you’ve experienced perfection, it’s hard to imagine settling for anything less. The tears finally dry up somewhere in northern Arizona, but the ache inside… I take that with me all the way to New York, where I will try my very best to pick up the pieces of my shattered life and put them back together into some new version of myself.           BWW Review: LOVE GENIUS AND A WALK, Drayton Arms Theatre      Cache   Translate Page      

Freud! Mahler! Love! Sex! Money! Music!

There's a lot to work with there (as Ken Russell knew in his crazy 1974 biopic) but Gay Walley's leaden script crushes the life out of the music (barely heard), the characters (barely developed) and the set (barely there). We're all prepared to suspend disbelief when we cross the threshold of a fringe theatre, but three chairs in garish green and sparkling silver that looked like they were hastily purloined from a dentist's waiting room? Really?

So the cast have a lot to do, as they not so much converse with each other, as announce at each other (for an all-female production team to include this quantum of mansplaining seems almost perverse). It can feel a little like they're reading chunks of Wikipedia - people, even people like this - just do not talk like that.

But Alma speaks of love with her withdrawn husband Gustav and flirts with her soon-to-be lover, Walter Gropius. In parallel, present day scenes, a Mahler obsessed writer speaks at her husband, financier, Steve, who speaks back at her. And Mahler gets a bit of therapy for free from the Doctor as they walk and shoot the breeze about mummy and daddy problems.

None of it convinces for a second. Alma is played as a coquettish girl by Chloe Booyens - one wonders how she ever bewitched such men (and she really did) and how she was ever an artist in her own right (and she really was). Lloyd Morris gives us a one-pitched Mahler, all work and no play making him a dull boy.

Helen Cunningham and Benjamin Murray do what they can with their odd, but successful couple, but how did they ever get together? They appear to share nothing, so as they drift apart - their relationship mirroring Gustav and Alma's over a century later - though it seems inevitable. And the stakes appear so low (no kids, no money problems, no love to lose) as to be unworthy of more than a shrug on our part. Meh...

Brendan Wyer's Freud has some of the man's energy and passion, but we get little of his thinking, never getting much beyond some of Woody Allen's pastiches of analysis from Annie Hall or Manhattan. Ashleigh Cole gets some laughs as her parade of starstruck passers-by go fangirly around the distinguished pair, interrupting their walk - I believed that bit!

The play rather sprawls at about 90 minutes without an interval and could really do with more of Mahler's music to break things up a little. But what it needs most are that fundamental starting point for all theatre - characters in whom we believe and about whom we care.

Love, Genius and a walk continues at the Drayton Arms Theatre until 14 October.

Freud! Mahler! Love! Sex! Money! Music!

There's a lot to work with there (as Ken Russell knew in his crazy 1974 biopic) but Gay Walley's leaden script crushes the life out of the music (barely heard), the characters (barely developed) and the set (barely there). We're all prepared to suspend disbelief when we cross the threshold of a fringe theatre, but three chairs in garish green and sparkling silver that looked like they were hastily purloined from a dentist's waiting room? Really?

So the cast have a lot to do, as they not so much converse with each other, as announce at each other (for an all-female production team to include this quantum of mansplaining seems almost perverse). It can feel a little like they're reading chunks of Wikipedia - people, even people like this - just do not talk like that.

But Alma speaks of love with her withdrawn husband Gustav and flirts with her soon-to-be lover, Walter Gropius. In parallel, present day scenes, a Mahler obsessed writer speaks at her husband, financier, Steve, who speaks back at her. And Mahler gets a bit of therapy for free from the Doctor as they walk and shoot the breeze about mummy and daddy problems.

None of it convinces for a second. Alma is played as a coquettish girl by Chloe Booyens - one wonders how she ever bewitched such men (and she really did) and how she was ever an artist in her own right (and she really was). Lloyd Morris gives us a one-pitched Mahler, all work and no play making him a dull boy.

Helen Cunningham and Benjamin Murray do what they can with their odd, but successful couple, but how did they ever get together? They appear to share nothing, so as they drift apart - their relationship mirroring Gustav and Alma's over a century later - though it seems inevitable. And the stakes appear so low (no kids, no money problems, no love to lose) as to be unworthy of more than a shrug on our part. Meh...

Brendan Wyer's Freud has some of the man's energy and passion, but we get little of his thinking, never getting much beyond some of Woody Allen's pastiches of analysis from Annie Hall or Manhattan. Ashleigh Cole gets some laughs as her parade of starstruck passers-by go fangirly around the distinguished pair, interrupting their walk - I believed that bit!

The play rather sprawls at about 90 minutes without an interval and could really do with more of Mahler's music to break things up a little. But what it needs most are that fundamental starting point for all theatre - characters in whom we believe and about whom we care.

Love, Genius and a walk continues at the Drayton Arms Theatre until 14 October.

Quantum mechanics and photonics share mathematical equivalence. By carefully exploiting the interplay between optical index, gain and loss in the complex dielectric permittivity plane, optics has become an ideal platform to explore some exotic quantum concepts, such as topological physics and parity-time (PT) symmetry. Instead of counteracting optical losses at micro and nano scales in integrated photonics, we started from an opposite viewpoint and developed a new paradigm of positively and strategically manipulating optical losses by the quantum-inspired photonics concept enrich fundamental optical physics and realized novel photonic synthetic matters with unique optical functionalities. In this seminar, I will present our recent efforts on engineering the complex optical potentials at an exceptional point (i.e. PT symmetry transition point). Based on the exceptional point-induced unidirectionality, we harness optical losses to enable unique microlaser functionalities, in particular, an orbital angular momentum (OAM) microlaser that structures and twists the lasing radiation at the microscale, which is expected to address the growing demand for information capacity. Additionally, I will discuss non-Hermitian topological photonics where optical non-Hermiticity and topological physics are coupled.

Ik ben me kostelijk aan het vermaken, maar meneer Kemp die lacht het hardst. Meneer Kemp is ook zeker geen idioot.

In classical information theory, the information bottleneck method (IBM) can be regarded as a method of lossy data compression which focusses on preserving meaningful (or relevant) information. As such it has recently gained a lot of attention, primarily for its applications in machine learning and neural networks. A quantum analogue of the IBM has recently been defined, and an attempt at providing an operational interpretation of the so-called quantum IB function as an optimal rate of an information-theoretic task, has recently been made by Salek et al. However, the interpretation given in that paper has a couple of drawbacks; firstly its proof is based on a conjecture that the quantum IB function is convex, and secondly, the expression for the rate function involves certain entropic quantities which occur explicitly in the very definition of the underlying information-theoretic task, thus making the latter somewhat contrived. We overcome both of these drawbacks by first proving the convexity of the quantum IB function, and then giving an alternative operational interpretation of it as the optimal rate of a bona fide information-theoretic task, namely that of quantum source coding with quantum side information at the decoder, and relate the quantum IB function to the rate region of this task. We similarly show that the related privacy funnel function is convex (both in the classical and quantum case). However, we comment that it is unlikely that the quantum privacy funnel function can characterize the optimal asymptotic rate of an information theoretic task, since even its classical version lacks a certain additivity property which turns out to be essential.

\'Elie Cartan's "g\'en\'eralisation de la notion de courbure" (1922) arose from a creative evaluation of the geometrical structures underlying both, Einstein's theory of gravity and the Cosserat brothers generalized theory of elasticity. To judge from his publications in 1922--24, Cartan developed his concept of generalized spaces with the dual context of general relativity and non-standard elasticity in mind. Linear Hamiltonian systems with time-dependent coefficients are of importance to nonlinear Hamiltonian systems, accelerator physics, plasma physics, and quantum physics. It is shown that the solution map of a linear Hamiltonian system with time-dependent coefficients can be parameterized by an envelope matrix $w(t)$, which has a clear physical meaning and satisfies a nonlinear envelope matrix equation. It is proved that a linear Hamiltonian system with periodic coefficients is stable iff the envelope matrix equation admits a solution with periodic $\sqrt{w^{\dagger}w}$ and a suitable initial condition. The mathematical devices utilized in this theoretical development with significant physical implications are time-dependent canonical transformations, normal forms for stable symplectic matrices, and horizontal polar decomposition of symplectic matrices. These tools systematically decompose the dynamics of linear Hamiltonian systems with time-dependent coefficients, and are expected to be effective in other studies as well, such as those on quantum algorithms for classical Hamiltonian systems.

The kinetic energy term of Hamiltonian systems with balanced loss and gain is not semi-positive-definite, leading to instabilities at the classical as well quantum level. It is shown that an additional Lorentz interaction in the Hamiltonian allows the kinetic energy term to be semi-positive-definite and thereby, improving the stability properties of the system. Further, a consistent quantum theory admitting bound states may be obtained on the real line instead of Stoke wedges on the complex plane. The Landau Hamiltonian in presence of balanced loss and gain is considered for elucidating the general result. The kinetic energy term is semi-positive-definite provided the magnitude of the applied external magnetic field is greater than the magnitude of the `analogous magnetic field' due to the loss gain terms. It is shown that the classical particle moves on an elliptical orbit with a cyclotron frequency that is less than its value in absence of the loss-gain terms. The quantum system share the properties of the standard Landau Hamiltonian, but, with the modified cyclotron frequency. It is shown that the Hall current has non-vanishing components along the direction of the external uniform electric field and to its transverse direction.

Local constraints play an important role in the effective description of many quantum systems. Their impact on dynamics and entanglement thermalization are just beginning to be unravelled. We develop a large $N$ diagrammatic formalism to exactly evaluate the bipartite entanglement of random pure states in large constrained Hilbert spaces. The resulting entanglement spectra may be classified into `phases' depending on their singularities. Our closed solution for the spectra in the simplest class of constraints reveals a non-trivial phase diagram with a Marchenko-Pastur (MP) phase which terminates in a critical point with new singularities. The much studied Rydberg-blockaded/Fibonacci chain lies in the MP phase with a modified Page correction to the entanglement entropy, $\Delta S_1 = 0.513595\cdots$. Our results predict the entanglement of infinite temperature eigenstates in thermalizing constrained systems and provide a baseline for numerical studies.

We formulate a quantization scheme of spectral curves which is not necessarily admissible in the sense of Bouchard and Eynard. The main result of this paper and the second part [IKoT] establishes a relation between the Voros coefficients for the quantum curves and the free energy for spectral curves associated with the confluent family of Gauss hypergeometric differential equations. We focus on the Weber equation in this article, and generalize the result for the other members of the confluent family in the second part. We also find explicit formulas of free energy for those spectral curves in terms of the Bernoulli numbers.

The Coordinate Bethe Ansatz (CBA) expresses, as a sum over permutations, the matrix element of an XXX Heisenberg spin chain Hamiltonian eigenstate with a state with fixed spins. These matrix elements comprise the wave functions of the Hamiltonian eigenstates. However, as the complexity of the sum grows rapidly with the length N of the spin chain, the exact wave function in the continuum limit is too cumbersome to be exploited. In this note we provide an approximation to the CBA whose complexity does not directly depend upon N. This consists of two steps. First, we add an anchor to the argument of the exponential in the CBA. The anchor is a permutation-dependent integral multiple of 2 pi. Once anchored, the distribution of these arguments simplifies, becoming approximately Gaussian. The wave function is given by the Fourier transform of this distribution and so the calculation of the wave function reduces to the calculation of the moments of the distribution. Second, we parametrize the permutation group as a map between integers and we bin these maps. The calculation of the moments then reduces to a combinatorial exercise on the partitioning into bins. As an example we consider the matrix element between the classical and quantum ground states.

The Hamiltonian Mean Field (HMF) model, which may be interpreted as a quantum rotor model with infinite-range interactions, is the most widely used toy model with which to study long-range interactions (LRI). It has demonstrated a remarkable ability to capture generic or universal features of $any$ system with LRI. In this work we provide a classification of $all~possible$ stationary solutions to the HMF model's generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GGPE). These solutions are expressible in terms of Mathieu functions and arise due to a competition between free-Schr\"odinger dispersion and a $non\text{-}local$ non-linearity. Upon a Galilean transformation these solutions can transformed to finite velocity solitary waves (bright solitons). In contrast to the typical GPE, there are an infinite tower of bright solitons that emerge, each with a different number of nodes. Our results suggest that LRI can support solitary waves in manner that is novel relative to the typical short-range case.

“Nothing is so alien to the human mind as the idea of randomness.” —John Cohen

Are you human? Then at some level you believe in magic. Specific beliefs about miracles and other kinds of magic may get handed down within a religious or cultural tradition, but we all are prone to magical thinking, even the most rigorous scientist or die-hard skeptic. At least that’s what psychological research suggests. In carefully structured experiments, people who don’t consciously believe in magic behave as if they unconsciously do.

Our tendency toward magical thinking derives from the structure of human cognition. Types of thinking that help us survive and thrive—like pattern matching, seeking cause-and effect-relationships, and attending to unusual events—also incline us to specific glitches in rationality. Understanding these flaws in human information processing makes it easier to understand why so many people see miracles and other kinds of magic in the world around us.

Snap judgments about cause and effect – When two things happen close in time or close in space without an obvious external cause, we tend to assume that one caused the other, instinctively equating correlation and causation. Our brains are constantly scanning for causes and effects; and we pair them up quickly, often before conscious processing can take place.

The evidence can be seen in magnetic resonance images according to neuroscientist Ben Parrish. When people watch a magician make a coin disappear, activity spikes immediately in the part of the brain that generates hypotheses about uncertain situations.

If aphids infest your rose bush and the leaves curl up, it is useful to suspect that one likely caused the other. But the same associative process is not so helpful when your brain tells you that a rabbit appeared from a hat because a magician waved his wand or that your headache went away because you prayed.

Paranoia (also known as agenticity, hyperactive agency detection or hyperactive intentionality detection) – The human mind puts inanimate objects and active agents in two very different categories. While inanimate objects are interchangeable, we treat agency as if it comes from an internal essence, a unique living force. But sometimes we get these categories crossed.

While we rarely treat humans as if they were inanimate objects, the opposite is not true. For example, young children are quick to treat a stuffed animal as if it were a living thing. One of the most beloved children’s stories in the English language is The Velveteen Rabbit, in which a stuffed rabbit becomes flesh and blood because he is loved by a child. We also tend to think by default that sounds and events were caused intentionally by a conscious agent. “He did it on puuurpose!” a young child wails when an older brother hurts them, whether it is true or not.

Research shows that infants tend to assume the presence of an active agent or intentionality whenever they see non-inertial movement. This would have had survival value for our ancestors. In the words of neurologist Steven Novela,

“We are descended from hominids who were more paranoid and had hyperactive agency detection, because they were less likely to be eaten by predators.

“We can extrapolate from “non-inertial movement”, or movement that cannot be easily explained as a passive reaction to natural forces, to more and more complex “actions.” [Hyperactive Agency Detection Device] detects more than movement, it can detect a pattern in otherwise unrelated events, details that defy easy explanation, or consequences that seem out of proportion to the alleged causes. When HADD is triggered we tend to see a hidden agent working behind the scenes, making events unfold the way they do, and perhaps even deliberately hiding its own tracks.”

We humans are social animals, and as our ancestors sought to understand natural events, it was natural to interpret them in social terms. It is still natural for us to do so today.

Apophenia (also known as patternicity) – Our relentless search for patterns is one of humanity’s greatest cognitive strengths. It defines who we are as a species, and it is fundamental to the explosion of human life across the planet. But it also means we have a tendency to see connections in unrelated events.

Apophenia underlies conspiracy theories and many kinds of parapsychology. Taken to an extreme it plagues people with schizophrenia who sometimes can’t get away from the feeling that unrelated events around them are acutely meaningful. “Our greatest challenge may be learning to bear incoherence,” says psychologist Bruce Poulsen. But even when we are willing to live with uncertainty and mystery, our brains keep pulling to fill in the unknown—and religions are more than willing to help.

Pareidolia – One common type of apophenia is pareidolia, perceiving nonexistent patterns in visual and auditory input. We see and hear things that aren’t really there, even in white noise or random forms like ink blots.

One former meth addict describes how drug use gradually turned background noise into intelligible messages. When things go wrong with neurotransmitters, as in schizophrenia, the same progression can happen to people who aren’t using drugs.

But nothing has to be wrong with our brains for us to see meaningful patterns where they don’t actually exist. Every child has seen a rabbit in a cloud or a monster in the shadow cast by moonlight through a bedroom window. The marbled stone on my bathroom floor contains the image of a rocket ship or flying penis, or swimming amoeba; members of the household don’t agree on which, but we all see something in that tile.

The most common kind of pareidolia is the tendency to see faces in inanimate objects. Infants respond to two black dots and a slash as a human face, suggesting that parts of our brain are highly tuned for recognizing and interpreting facial information. It should come as no surprise, then, when people see the faces of Jesus, Mary and devils in objects as disparateas a Cheeto, a banana skin, an ancient shroud, or even a dog’s bum. Miraculous? No, but it’s only natural that we think so.

Attraction to unusual or counter-intuitive events – We habituate to the familiar, but the unexpected captures our attention. This thought pattern is highly efficient, because it means we aren’t squandering mental energy on things that stay the same. Instead, we can attend to whatever is moving or changing or novel or puzzling.

This tendency helps us to stay safe (to avoid getting run over one needs to focus on the one moving car in an otherwise static landscape), and it helps us to make discoveries. As Isaac Asimov famously said, “The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not “Eureka!” (I found it!) but “That’s funny …”. Unfortunately, this means we also love to tell stories that violate the expected, stories about the exception rather than the rule—including miracle stories.

Poor statistical intuition and reasoning – We humans are terrible at predicting the likelihood of rare events, which can make common occurrences seem miraculous. Most events that people experience as “miraculous” are predictably common given real-world base rates and population sizes, but that is not how they seem.

Our intuitive statistics so wildly miss the mark that an entire book could be written about how readily we get wowed and seek extraordinary explanations for events that we perceive as rare but actually aren’t. In fact, books have been written on this topic, and to do it justice I will dive in later. Suffice to say that people who believe in paranormal phenomena appear to do worse at statistical inference than others.

Glitches like these—and others—lay the foundation for seemingly supernatural and paranormal experiences. Our ancient ancestors may have seen magical beings in the world around them. Religious people may find miracles in recovery from cancer or empty parking spots. New Agers may turn quantum theory into woo. Psychics and paranormal aficionados may convince themselves that they’re onto something. But don’t get too smug. Really, when it comes to magical thinking, we’re all in this together.

It would have been so hilarious if he had actually just said true things about quantum mechanics in this outfit. I was hoping for that but he disappointed me with the usual delusions about what quantum mechanics actually says.

In the end he just reiterated the common esoteric and self-centered "I found myself in the universe and in science's 'pick and mix'". It's too bad—he comes across as a nice and funny guy. (Though I'm afraid that could change instantly when he is confronted with "transphobia", a.k.a. the mostly reasonable norms of a functioning society.)

Abstract
The chiral Majorana fermion is a massless self-conjugate fermion which can arise as the edge state of certain 2D topological matters. It has been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed in a hybrid device of a quantum anomalous Hall insulator and a conventional superconductor. Its closely related cousin, the Majorana zero mode in the bulk of the corresponding topological matter, is known to be applicable in topological quantum computations. Here we show that the propagation of chiral Majorana fermions leads to the same unitary transformation as that in the braiding of Majorana zero modes and propose a platform to perform quantum computation with chiral Majorana fermions. A Corbino ring junction of the hybrid device can use quantum coherent chiral Majorana fermions to implement the Hadamard gate and the phase gate, and the junction conductance yields a natural readout for the qubit state.

[India], Oct 10 (NewsVoir): The Prime Ministers' Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council (STIAC) in its first meeting held on Tuesday set some clear objectives and directions for a number of key projects.

The panel will meet regularly to ensure adequate stimulus for technology innovation and entrepreneurship.

The panel was formulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to advice on science and technology innovation. It is currently headed by Dr. K Vijay Raghavan, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.

Other members of the council include Former ISRO chief A. S. Kiran Kumar; Professor Ajay Sood, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru; Professor Subhash Kak, Oklahoma State University; Professor Manjul Bharghava, noted mathematician from Princeton University; Major General Madhuri Kanitkar, the first woman dean from Pune's Armed Forces Medical College, and industrialist Baba Kalyani. Secretaries of around 10 central ministries, including science and technology, energy and education were special invitees to the panel.

The day-long meeting included presentations on a range of topics, followed by discussions and directions for action. The formation and terms of reference for the council are a consequence of the fact that while the quality of the scientific efforts in the country are good, as a whole, the country is unable to move forward in terms of scientific and technological innovation.

To address this, the Prime Minister personally took several steps on assuming office. Post meeting a group of key scientists, a number of policy directions were pushed by the Prime-Minister's Office's for action by the relevant ministries.

Over the past two years, the Group of Secretaries in Science and Technology have both formulated and initiated implementation of major steps to improve technological innovation in the country. In April this year, the Prime Minister appointed a new Principal Scientific Adviser followed by the constitution of the Prime Minister's STIAC. These concrete steps have resulted in the country's science and technology eco-system coming together towards a cohesive direction.

"There is now a stated direction and efficiency in the system due to the increased government, industry and philanthropy investment along with quality leadership. India's scientific enterprise can be made strong, collaborative, daring, purposeful and effective. India's Science and Technology sector must become a shining example to the world, and will have a strong positive impact on our society and economy," said K Vijay Raghavan, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.

In the meeting, various key projects and their direction were discussed including - Accelerating Growth for New India innovation (AGNIi), Deep Ocean Mission, Teaching S&T in Indian languages, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Quantum Computing, Bioscience Mission for Precision Health and Optimal Well-being, Waste to Energy, Research, Development and Innovation towards making India a leader in Electric Vehicles, Indian Biodiversity: characterisation, preservation and sustainable use.

All discussions and conclusions are being translated into clear action-points and will not be open-ended. The STIAC is scheduled to meet regularly and ensure that there is adequate stimulus to implement all the programs within a one-to-three year time period. (NewsVoir)

One of the biggest bugaboos for maintaining the Toobworld concept has been recastaways.  The Toobworld Dynamic is a visual shared universe only, unlike the Wold Newton Universe and the Wild Hunt Universe which are concepts of the mind.  They’re free to go about their business in combining the various adventures of Sherlock Holmes, for example, whether it be print, comics, movies, or TV shows with no worries about the difference in appearance.

Toobworld is restricted from doing that.  If a new actor is playing a part, “splainins” have to be found as to why there was a change in appearance, and why the people who see that character don’t notice the difference.  (This is why ‘Quantum Leap’ is an Essential – it provides one reason as to why other people never noticed when Sam Beckett leapt into the lives of all those people.)

Other splainins include witchcraft, replicants, alien possession, and tried and true plastic surgery. 

 But there was one recastaway that didn’t need any sort of splainin really.  That’s because it happened in another TV show and has been designated as just that – a TV series within the TV Universe.

‘Trapper John, M.D.’ is an American medical drama television series and spin-off of the film “MASH” (1970). Pernell Roberts portrayed the title character, a lovable surgeon who became a mentor and father figure in San Francisco, California. The show ran on CBS from September 23, 1979, to September 4, 1986. Roberts played the character more than twice as long as had Wayne Rogers (1972–75) on the TV series ‘M*A*S*H’; Roberts took over the role played by Elliott Gould in the film. 


‘Trapper John, M.D.’ focuses on Dr. "Trapper" John McIntyre 28 years after his discharge from the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (M.A.S.H. or MASH) in the Korean War. During that time after the war, the character had mellowed considerably. He did not merely learn how to stop fighting the system but became a part of it, in a sense, as the Chief of Surgery at San Francisco Memorial Hospital. Trapper shows tremendous compassion toward his patients, often violating "established hospital procedures."


Working with Trapper is an aspiring young professional named Dr. George Alonzo "Gonzo" Gates (Gregory Harrison), who has a lot in common with Trapper, having also served in a MASH (albeit during the later Vietnam War). His sense of humor and love of life also reflect elements of Trapper's younger days. In the show, Gonzo resides in a motor home (dubbed "The Titanic") in the hospital parking lot.


What I never knew until I started this post was that it sounds as if the producers were thinking of ‘Trapper John M.D.’ as a direct sequel to the movie rather than as a spinoff from the series.  Not that it matters, ‘M*A*S*H’ the movie remains in the Cineverse. 


So Trapper John McIntyre is a true Multiversal – BookWorld, Cineverse, Toobworld.  The Pernell Roberts TV show could be shunted off to Toobworld2, the Land o’ Remakes, but there were plenty of references to the show within other shows which are set in the main Toobworld.

So in the 1970s, some TV producer must have contacted Dr. John McIntyre and bought the rights to his story.  But instead of making a show about his time in the Korean Conflict, they wanted to focus on his current career as a physician.


It’s only conjecture, but I think Trap came to the producer’s notice for some huge medical procedure which made the news.  It was probably adapted for the TV show but the names of those involved, save for Trapper John himself, were changed to protect their private lives (and to save the producer from having to pay them as well.)

By treating ‘Trapper John, M.D.’ as a TV show within the TV Universe, it becomes Zonk-proof.

El Servicio Andaluz de Salud (SAS) indemnizará con 15.000 euros a una niña a la que cuando tenía 15 meses le amputaron las piernas por un error médico, ya que fue al hospital de Cádiz con fiebre alta y se le diagnosticó Gripe A, cuando en realidad tenía una sepsis, ha informado El Defensor del Paciente. Los servicios jurídicos de esta organización han informado hoy en un comunicado de que durante la tramitación de la causa penal abierta por este error médico en el Juzgado de Primera Instancia número 2 de Cádiz , el SAS ha dictado una resolución en vía administrativa estimando parcialmente la demanda de los padres de la menor, que piden una indemnización de 512.134 euros. El Defensor del Paciente explica en su comunicado que la demanda continuará su curso para que la indemnización alcance la petición de los padres, a pesar de que la resolución administrativa supone que "ya no se discute la negligencia, sino solo el quantum indemnizatorio". La historia de este error médico se remonta al 19 de noviembre de 2009 cuando los padres de la menor la trasladaron desde su domicilio en Chiclana de la Frontera ( Cádiz ) hasta el Servicio de Urgencias del Hospital Universitario Puerta del Mar alarmados por la elevada temperatura de fiebre que presentaba la niña. Según explica El Defensor del Paciente, "tras examinarla y explorarla con fonendoscopio y sin realizarle ningún otro tipo de prueba diagnóstica", el personal facultativo le diagnosticó Gripe A, le dio el alta y la mandó a casa. "Desgraciadamente, la paciente lo que tenía era una sepsis, que ya se había extendido a la sangre, producida por una bacteria meningocócica no detectada", añade el comunicado, que asegura que "al ser diagnosticada tardíamente" la niña "no pudo salvar sus dos piernas" y además, padece "secuelas neuronales". Así, tan pronto como llegó a su casa después de estar en el hospital, "empezó con vómitos, convulsiones, se le pusieron las manos y los labios de color morado y le salieron unas manchas por el pecho y cuello". Los padres cogieron de nuevo a la niña y volvieron de madrugada al Hospital Universitario Puerta del Mar, donde estuvo en la UCI 56 días. A la pequeña le tuvieron que practicar una intervención quirúrgica en la que le amputaron "las dos piernas por debajo de la rótula, ya que presentaba una intensa necrosis húmeda hasta dicho nivel", tras lo que ha precisado "hasta tres operaciones de cirugía plástica para reconstrucción del muñón". La pequeña está en estos momentos en lista de espera para que le reconstruyan las piernas a través de una cirugía experimental en el Hospital La Fe de Valencia. Según El Defensor del Paciente, aunque el SAS había informado "desfavorablemente", el Consejo Consultivo de Andalucía ha emitido un informe favorable a la reclamación, en el que sostiene que "la rápida e imprecisa valoración en Urgencias de una niña de 15 meses con fiebre elevada siendo diagnosticada de Gripe A sin claros criterios clínicos, analíticos ni epidemiológicos (no había Gripe A en su entorno), impidió la correcta valoración de su enfermedad y la instauración del tratamiento con antibióticos que hubiera cambiado su evolución y pronóstico". El asunto, según la organización, es "especialmente sangrante" puesto que cuando salió a la luz "los propios sindicatos reconocieron en un comunicado de prensa que este tipo de cosas estaban pasando porque recibían en el Hospital Puerta del Mar presión para no ingresar pacientes en planta y así abaratar costes".

Finn Jon's Esoterica: The Vanishing Cigar

In this effect, the magician enters the stage, puffing a cigar. But the cigar obviously does not taste good. The sour cigar is crumpled up into the magician's hand, continuously releasing smoke, and then disappears without a trace. I usually use this effect as an opener. The design of the fake cigar has undergone several steps of development. I conceived a cigar that could be operated with only one hand, as well as added a gadget to allow it to be smoked like a normal cigar for a short while. The new method is a good simplification of my first method, as it is easier to build, handle, and maintain. And the illusion is stronger, because the cigar is continuously giving off smoke until the moment it vanishes. Finally, a pure sleight-of-hand version might just be the best way to do this.

Here, a spectator shuffles an ordinary deck of cards. The performer then immediately spells to three of the Aces. The deck is handed to the spectator, who spells to the fourth Ace.

I've been using sound effects and music cues in my show for a long time and it hasn't always been easy. For years, I was in the terrifying position of relying on someone else to hit Play at the right time. The very memory of that sends chills down my spine. That someone was rarely a professional - it was usually a bartender, bouncer, club owner, or student - and the cues rarely went off without a hitch. Most of the time, there were miscues and delays, or there was no sound at all. Add all the other pitfalls - think lost cassettes, scratched CDs - and it just wasn't worth the effort. It was very frustrating. I had a taste of how sound could add to my act, but I had no reliable way of using it. Everything changed when I finally purchased my first remote-controlled sound player in the early 2000s. I was finally in control. I could plug in, test my volume, and know that I was set to go. What a difference it made, adding a whole new dimension to my act, a new tool in my creative toolbox.

In this series, I've presented routines that appear to be easy versions of classic effects. The knuckle-busting levels have been down in the single digits. But it's easy to misunderstand the intent of these approaches. Our goal is never to simplify a method to make the trick easier to do. The approach I suggest - and it's not easy to nail down - is implicit in the first tenet of the Monk's Way Doctrine (a.k.a. How the Heck did Hamman Do It?): What is the audience assumption at any point in the actions of a routine? The answers to this question will help us find the balance between the method, the performer, the audience, and the effect/affect. In some ways, this approach can feel just as difficult as any advanced sleight.

Walkabout Soup: DeMasi and the Dove

Melbourne magician Anthony DeMasi was always known for his unpredictable, madcap performances. You never quite knew what was going to happen in an Anthony show. Unlike most unpredictable performers, though, Anthony's shows were always solidly watchable. He was likeable, did good magic, and always managed to steer the chaos in an entertaining direction.About a decade ago, Anthony was workshopping a new routine by performing it at a magic club meeting. The routine was classic DeMasi. His dove, named Pepe, was placed in a Rube Goldberg-like deathtrap contraption. A candle was positioned to burn through a rope, which would drop a weight, crushing Pepe to death - unless Anthony could find a chosen playing card in time. Note that Pepe wasn't in any actual danger. The machine, while visibly chaotic and fearsome, had no chance of hurting the animal in any way. Pepe, however, didn't know that.

Division of Biology and Biological Engineering

Long Cai, Professor of Biology and Biological Engineering

Cai focuses on spatial genomics, using super-resolution and live-cell microscopy to study gene regulatory networks in cells and organisms. He and his group have developed a novel imaging method, called seqFISH, that allows over 10,000 genes to be imaged directly in single cells, revealing how cells are organized in tissues like the brain and illustrating previously unknown dynamics in stem cells. Cai received his bachelor's degree and PhD from Harvard University.

David Van Valen, Assistant Professor of Biology and Biological Engineering

Van Valen (PhD '11) studies the quantitative and physical principles underlying the behavior of complex biological systems using host-virus interactions as a model system. He and his group will seek to understand how living systems and their respective viruses encode and decode information about their internal state and their environment. Van Valen received undergraduate degrees in mathematics and physics from MIT in 2003. He then matriculated into the UCLA/Caltech MD/PhD program, completing his PhD in applied physics in 2011 and his MD degree in 2013.

Kaihang Wang, Assistant Professor of Biology and Biological Engineering

Wang focuses on genome engineering, developing methods to "write" the sequences of entire genomes within living cells, which enables the engineering of synthetic organisms with new genetic codes and new capabilities. In future work, he hopes to develop this genome engineering technology to take it beyond bacteria to animal cells, and to use it to develop a variety of new biotechnology applications. Wang received a BSc in biochemistry from University College London and a PhD in synthetic biology and biochemistry from the University of Cambridge.

Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

Scott Cushing, Assistant Professor of Chemistry

Cushing's research examines ultrafast electronic-structural dynamics, particularly as they are relevant to optical biosensors and renewable energy systems. He is currently developing techniques that combine element specificity with a time resolution of less than a femtosecond (one millionth of one billionth of a second) and he is also exploring classical spectroscopy with entangled photons. He received his bachelor's degree and PhD from West Virginia University in 2011 and 2015, respectively, and was a Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Postdoctoral Fellow at UC Berkeley from 2016–18.

Ryan Hadt, Assistant Professor of Chemistry

Hadt's research is broadly based in the area of physical inorganic chemistry and employs a wide range of spectroscopic techniques with the goal of understanding the role of the electronic structure of transition metals such as cobalt, with applications to interdisciplinary areas of chemistry, biology, and materials science. His current research is focused on fundamental and applied studies of the molecular processes involved in forming and breaking chemical bonds, with the goal of optimizing the catalysts involved in chemical reactions. Hadt received his BS and MS degrees in chemistry from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, in 2007 and 2008, respectively, and his PhD from Stanford University in 2014. He was then a visiting postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University and an Enrico Fermi Fellow at Argonne National Laboratory.

Lu Wei, Assistant Professor of Chemistry

Wei's research lies at the interface of optical spectroscopy, chemical biology, and life sciences. Her lab is developing cutting-edge optical spectroscopy and microscopy techniques to understand the dynamical physical and chemical processes in living systems. For example, she and her colleagues have developed a technique in which the vibrations of a chemical tag can be detected in living cells by a method called stimulated Raman scattering microscopy. The tag could be used to trace important small biomolecules in a cell and map their locations over time. Wei received a BS from Nanjing University in 2010 and a PhD from Columbia University in 2015. After her postdoctoral work at Columbia, she came to Caltech as an assistant professor in March 2018.

Alireza Marandi, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering

Marandi is an electrical engineer who studies nonlinear photonics to create new molecular sensing and computing functions. Nonlinear photonics is a field of optics that uses light—usually from lasers—in nonlinear media to alter its wavelength. It provides a broad range of less-explored opportunities to use lasers and light detectors for purposes including sensing and computing. François Tissot, Assistant Professor of Geochemistry

Tissot, an isotope geochemist and cosmochemist, works on questions pertaining to the chronology, formation, and evolution of the solar system; the reconstruction of oxygen levels in Earth's oceans and atmospheres in the deep geological past; and the development of new methods to investigate the formation of the continental crust. To answer these questions, he uses mass spectrometers that quantify minute differences in the amounts of certain elements and isotopes in terrestrial and extraterrestrial samples (for example, meteorites and their inclusions). Tissot received a diplome d'Ingénieur from École National Supérieure de Géologie in France in 2009, an MSc from the Luleå University of Technology in Sweden in 2009, and a doctorate from the University of Chicago in 2015.

Charles (Chip) Sebens, Assistant Professor of Philosophy

Sebens's research lies at the intersection of philosophy and science. In particular, he explores the philosophical underpinnings of quantum theory and classical field theory—examining, for example, whether electrons actually "spin." He received bachelor's degrees in philosophy and physics from MIT in 2009, a Master of Studies degree in philosophy of physics from the University of Oxford in 2010, and, from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, he received a Master of Science degree in physics in 2013 and a PhD in philosophy in 2015.

Yi Xin, Assistant Professor of Economics

Xin is an economist with an interest in applied microeconomics and statistical methodology. She has researched areas in econometrics, a field of study that applies statistical methods to economic data to determine underlying economic relationships, and empirical industrial organization, which uses empirical methods for analyzing the structures of markets and corporations. She received bachelor's degrees in economics and psychology from Peking University in 2012, and a master's degree in economics (2016) and a PhD in economics (2018) from Johns Hopkins University.

Philip Isett, Assistant Professor of Mathematics

Isett, a mathematician, works in partial differential equations, focusing on solutions to the incompressible Euler equations of fluid dynamics in a regime of low regularity. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland in 2008 and a PhD from Princeton University in 2013, then he worked at MIT as a Moore Instructor and as a National Science Foundation postdoctoral scholar. He was named assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

Maksym Radziwill, Professor of Mathematics

Radziwill works in analytic number theory, focusing on the distribution of prime numbers, multiplicative functions, and related objects. He is particularly interested in the interactions of analytic number theory with other fields of mathematics, specifically probability, spectral theory, and harmonic analysis. Radziwill earned his BSc in mathematics from McGill University in 2009 and his PhD from Stanford University in 2013. He was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study from 2013–14, Hill Assistant Professor at Rutgers University from 2014–16, and an assistant professor at McGill University from 2016–18.

Are you human? Then at some level you believe in magic. Specific beliefs about miracles and other kinds of magic may get handed down within a religious or cultural tradition, but we all are prone to magical thinking, even the most rigorous scientist or die-hard skeptic. At least that’s what psychological research suggests. In carefully structured experiments, people who don’t consciously believe in magic behave as if they unconsciously do.

Our tendency toward magical thinking derives from the structure of human cognition. Types of thinking that help us survive and thrive—like pattern matching, seeking cause-and effect-relationships, and attending to unusual events—also incline us to specific glitches in rationality. Understanding these flaws in human information processing makes it easier to understand why so many people see miracles and other kinds of magic in the world around us.

Snap judgments about cause and effect – When two things happen close in time or close in space without an obvious external cause, we tend to assume that one caused the other, instinctively equating correlation and causation. Our brains are constantly scanning for causes and effects; and we pair them up quickly, often before conscious processing can take place.

The evidence can be seen in magnetic resonance images according to neuroscientist Ben Parrish. When people watch a magician make a coin disappear, activity spikes immediately in the part of the brain that generates hypotheses about uncertain situations.

If aphids infest your rose bush and the leaves curl up, it is useful to suspect that one likely caused the other. But the same associative process is not so helpful when your brain tells you that a rabbit appeared from a hat because a magician waved his wand or that your headache went away because you prayed.

Paranoia (also known as agenticity, hyperactive agency detection or hyperactive intentionality detection) – The human mind puts inanimate objects and active agents in two very different categories. While inanimate objects are interchangeable, we treat agency as if it comes from an internal essence, a unique living force. But sometimes we get these categories crossed.

While we rarely treat humans as if they were inanimate objects, the opposite is not true. For example, young children are quick to treat a stuffed animal as if it were a living thing. One of the most beloved children’s stories in the English language is The Velveteen Rabbit, in which a stuffed rabbit becomes flesh and blood because he is loved by a child. We also tend to think by default that sounds and events were caused intentionally by a conscious agent. “He did it on puuurpose!” a young child wails when an older brother hurts them, whether it is true or not.

Research shows that infants tend to assume the presence of an active agent or intentionality whenever they see non-inertial movement. This would have had survival value for our ancestors. In the words of neurologist Steven Novela,

“We are descended from hominids who were more paranoid and had hyperactive agency detection, because they were less likely to be eaten by predators.

“We can extrapolate from “non-inertial movement”, or movement that cannot be easily explained as a passive reaction to natural forces, to more and more complex “actions.” [Hyperactive Agency Detection Device] detects more than movement, it can detect a pattern in otherwise unrelated events, details that defy easy explanation, or consequences that seem out of proportion to the alleged causes. When HADD is triggered we tend to see a hidden agent working behind the scenes, making events unfold the way they do, and perhaps even deliberately hiding its own tracks.”

We humans are social animals, and as our ancestors sought to understand natural events, it was natural to interpret them in social terms. It is still natural for us to do so today.

Apophenia (also known as patternicity) – Our relentless search for patterns is one of humanity’s greatest cognitive strengths. It defines who we are as a species, and it is fundamental to the explosion of human life across the planet. But it also means we have a tendency to see connections in unrelated events.

Apophenia underlies conspiracy theories and many kinds of parapsychology. Taken to an extreme it plagues people with schizophrenia who sometimes can’t get away from the feeling that unrelated events around them are acutely meaningful. “Our greatest challenge may be learning to bear incoherence,” says psychologist Bruce Poulsen. But even when we are willing to live with uncertainty and mystery, our brains keep pulling to fill in the unknown—and religions are more than willing to help.

Pareidolia – One common type of apophenia is pareidolia, perceiving nonexistent patterns in visual and auditory input. We see and hear things that aren’t really there, even in white noise or random forms like ink blots.

One former meth addict describes how drug use gradually turned background noise into intelligible messages. When things go wrong with neurotransmitters, as in schizophrenia, the same progression can happen to people who aren’t using drugs.

But nothing has to be wrong with our brains for us to see meaningful patterns where they don’t actually exist. Every child has seen a rabbit in a cloud or a monster in the shadow cast by moonlight through a bedroom window. The marbled stone on my bathroom floor contains the image of a rocket ship or flying penis, or swimming amoeba; members of the household don’t agree on which, but we all see something in that tile.

The most common kind of pareidolia is the tendency to see faces in inanimate objects. Infants respond to two black dots and a slash as a human face, suggesting that parts of our brain are highly tuned for recognizing and interpreting facial information. It should come as no surprise, then, when people see the faces of Jesus, Mary and devils in objects as disparateas a Cheeto, a banana skin, an ancient shroud, or even a dog’s bum. Miraculous? No, but it’s only natural that we think so.

Attraction to unusual or counter-intuitive events – We habituate to the familiar, but the unexpected captures our attention. This thought pattern is highly efficient, because it means we aren’t squandering mental energy on things that stay the same. Instead, we can attend to whatever is moving or changing or novel or puzzling.

This tendency helps us to stay safe (to avoid getting run over one needs to focus on the one moving car in an otherwise static landscape), and it helps us to make discoveries. As Isaac Asimov famously said, “The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not “Eureka!” (I found it!) but “That’s funny …”. Unfortunately, this means we also love to tell stories that violate the expected, stories about the exception rather than the rule—including miracle stories.

Poor statistical intuition and reasoning – We humans are terrible at predicting the likelihood of rare events, which can make common occurrences seem miraculous. Most events that people experience as “miraculous” are predictably common given real-world base rates and population sizes, but that is not how they seem.

Our intuitive statistics so wildly miss the mark that an entire book could be written about how readily we get wowed and seek extraordinary explanations for events that we perceive as rare but actually aren’t. In fact, books have been written on this topic, and to do it justice I will dive in later. Suffice to say that people who believe in paranormal phenomena appear to do worse at statistical inference than others.

Glitches like these—and others—lay the foundation for seemingly supernatural and paranormal experiences. Our ancient ancestors may have seen magical beings in the world around them. Religious people may find miracles in recovery from cancer or empty parking spots. New Agers may turn quantum theory into woo. Psychics and paranormal aficionados may convince themselves that they’re onto something. But don’t get too smug. Really, when it comes to magical thinking, we’re all in this together.

          Toward Perfect 1D Conduction in Magnetic Topological Insulators, Oct 19      Cache   Translate Page      
I will explain what is "perfect" 1D conduction and describe several strategies for achieving it. Some require high magnetic fields and/or cryogenic temperatures, but there's now hope of achieving perfect 1D conduction at room temperature with no external magnetic field, through a phenomenon known as the quantum anomalous Hall effect.

This effect was recently realized in thin films of Cr-doped (Bi, Sb)2Te3, a ferromagnetic 3D topological insulator. The presence of ferromagnetic exchange breaks time-reversal symmetry, opening a gap in the surface states, but gives rise to dissipationless chiral conduction at the edge of a magnetized film. Ideally, this leads to vanishing longitudinal resistance, and Hall resistance roughly h/e^2 , where h is Planck's constant and e is the electron charge (this is a signature of one type of perfect 1D conduction). But perfect quantization had proved elusive.

I'll show results on the QAHE in the limit of zero applied magnetic field, and measure Hall resistance quantized to within two parts per 10 million. This result demonstrates a significant step toward achieving dissipationless electron transport in technologically relevant conditions. I’ll also discuss how we can manipulate where this conduction occurs by modifying the magnetic domain structure.

With the launch of the Google Pixel 3, smartphone cameras have taken yet another leap in capability. I had the opportunity to sit down with Isaac Reynolds, Product Manager for Camera on Pixel, and Marc Levoy, Distinguished Engineer and Computational Photography Lead at Google, to learn more about the technology behind the new camera in the Pixel 3.

One of the first things you might notice about the Pixel 3 is the single rear camera. At a time when we're seeing companies add dual, triple, even quad-camera setups, one main camera seems at first an odd choice.

But after speaking to Marc and Isaac I think that the Pixel camera team is taking the correct approach – at least for now. Any technology that makes a single camera better will make multiple cameras in future models that much better, and we've seen in the past that a single camera approach can outperform a dual camera approach in Portrait Mode, particularly when the telephoto camera module has a smaller sensor and slower lens, or lacks reliable autofocus.

Let's take a closer look at some of the Pixel 3's core technologies.

1. Super Res Zoom

Last year the Pixel 2 showed us what was possible with burst photography. HDR+ was its secret sauce, and it worked by constantly buffering nine frames in memory. When you press the shutter, the camera essentially goes back in time to those last nine frames1, breaks each of them up into thousands of 'tiles', aligns them all, and then averages them.

Breaking each image into small tiles allows for advanced alignment even when the photographer or subject introduces movement. Blurred elements in some shots can be discarded, or subjects that have moved from frame to frame can be realigned. Averaging simulates the effects of shooting with a larger sensor by 'evening out' noise. And going back in time to the last 9 frames captured right before you hit the shutter button means there's zero shutter lag.

This year, the Pixel 3 pushes all this further. It uses HDR+ burst photography to buffer up to 15 images2, and then employs super-resolution techniques to increase the resolution of the image beyond what the sensor and lens combination would traditionally achieve3. Subtle shifts from handheld shake and optical image stabilization (OIS) allow scene detail to be localized with sub-pixel precision, since shifts are unlikely to be exact multiples of a pixel.

In fact, I was told the shifts are carefully controlled by the optical image stabilization system. "We can demonstrate the way the optical image stabilization moves very slightly" remarked Marc Levoy. Precise sub-pixel shifts are not necessary at the sensor level though; instead, OIS is used to uniformly distribute a bunch of scene samples across a pixel, and then the images are aligned to sub-pixel precision in software.

But Google – and Peyman Milanfar's research team working on this particular feature – didn't stop there. If you have enough samples, you can expect any scene element to have fallen on a red, green, and blue pixel. After alignment, then, you have R, G, and B information for any given scene element, which removes the need to demosaic. That itself leads to an increase in resolution (since you don't have to interpolate spatial data from neighboring pixels), and a decrease in noise since the math required for demosaicing is itself a source of noise. The benefits are essentially similar to what you get when shooting pixel shift modes on dedicated cameras.

Normal wide-angle (28mm equiv.) Super Res Zoom

There's a small catch to all this – at least for now. Super Res only activates at 1.2x zoom or more. Not in the default 'zoomed out' 28mm equivalent mode. As expected, the lower your level of zoom, the more impressed you'll be with the resulting Super Res images, and naturally the resolving power of the lens will be a limitation. But the claim is that you can get "digital zoom roughly competitive with a 2x optical zoom" according to Isaac Reynolds, and it all happens right on the phone.

The results I was shown at Google appeared to be more impressive than the example we were provided above, no doubt at least in part due to the extreme zoom of our example here. We'll reserve judgement until we've had a chance to test the feature for ourselves.

Would the Pixel 3 benefit from a second rear camera? For certain scenarios – still landscapes for example – probably. But having more cameras doesn't always mean better capabilities. Quite often 'second' cameras have worse low light performance due to a smaller sensor and slower lens, as well as poor autofocus due to the lack of, or fewer, phase-detect pixels. One huge advantage of Pixel's Portrait Mode is that its autofocus doesn't differ from normal wide-angle shooting: dual pixel AF combined with HDR+ and pixel-binning yields incredible low light performance, even with fast moving erratic subjects.

2. Computational Raw

The Pixel 3 introduces 'computational Raw' capture in the default camera app. Isaac stressed that when Google decided to enable Raw in its Pixel cameras, they wanted to do it right, taking advantage of the phone's computational power.

"There's one key difference relative to the rest of the industry. Our DNG is the result of aligning and merging [up to 15] multiple frames... which makes it look more like the result of a DSLR" explains Marc. There's no exaggeration here: we know very well that image quality tends to scale with sensor size thanks to a greater amount of total light collected per exposure, which reduces the impact of the most dominant source of noise in images: photon shot, or statistical, noise.

The Pixel cameras can effectively make up for their small sensor sizes by capturing more total light through multiple exposures, while aligning moving objects from frame to frame so they can still be averaged to decrease noise. That means better low light performance and higher dynamic range than what you'd expect from such a small sensor.

Shooting Raw allows you to take advantage of that extra range: by pulling back blown highlights and raising shadows otherwise clipped to black in the JPEG, and with full freedom over white balance in post thanks to the fact that there's no scaling of the color channels before the Raw file is written.

Such 'merged' Raw files represent a major threat to traditional cameras. The math alone suggests that, solely based on sensor size, 15 averaged frames from the Pixel 3 sensor should compete with APS-C sized sensors in terms of noise levels. There are more factors at play, including fill factor, quantum efficiency and microlens design, but needless to say we're very excited to get the Pixel 3 into our studio scene and compare it with dedicated cameras in Raw mode, where the effects of the JPEG engine can be decoupled from raw performance.

While solutions do exist for combining multiple Raws from traditional cameras with alignment into a single output DNG, having an integrated solution in a smartphone that takes advantage of Google's frankly class-leading tile-based align and merge - with no ghosting artifacts even with moving objects in the frame - is incredibly exciting. This feature should prove highly beneficial to enthusiast photographers. And what's more - Raws are automatically uploaded to Google Photos, so you don't have to worry about transferring them as you do with traditional cameras.

3. Synthetic Fill Flash

Often a photographer will use a reflector to light the faces of backlit subjects. Pixel 3 does this computationally. The same machine-learning based segmentation algorithm that the Pixel camera uses in Portrait Mode is used to identify human subjects and add a warm glow to them.

If you've used the front facing camera on the Pixel 2 for Portrait Mode selfies, you've probably noticed how well it detects and masks human subjects using only segmentation. By using that same segmentation method for synthetic fill flash, the Pixel 3 is able to relight human subjects very effectively, with believable results that don't confuse and relight other objects in the frame.

Interestingly, the same segmentation methods used to identify human subjects are also used for front-facing video image stabilization, which is great news for vloggers. If you're vlogging, you typically want yourself, not the background, to be stabilized. That's impossible with typical gyro-based optical image stabilization. The Pixel 3 analyzes each frame of the video feed and uses digital stabilization to steady you in the frame. There's a small crop penalty to enabling this mode, but it allows for very steady video of the person holding the camera.

4. Learning-based Portrait Mode

The Pixel 2 had one of the best Portrait Modes we've tested despite having only one lens. This was due to its clever use of split pixels to sample a stereo pair of images behind the lens, combined with machine-learning based segmentation to understand human vs. non-human objects in the scene (for an in-depth explanation, watch my video here). Furthermore, dual pixel AF meant robust performance of even moving subjects in low light - great for constantly moving toddlers. The Pixel 3 brings some significant improvements despite lacking a second lens.

According to computational lead Marc Levoy, "Where we used to compute stereo from the dual pixels, we now use a learning-based pipeline. It still utilizes the dual pixels, but it's not a conventional algorithm, it's learning based". What this means is improved results: more uniformly defocused backgrounds and fewer depth map errors. Have a look at the improved results with complex objects, where many approaches are unable to reliably blur backgrounds 'seen through' holes in foreground objects:

Interestingly, this learning-based approach also yields better results with mid-distance shots where a person is further away. Typically, the further away your subject is, the less difference in stereo disparity between your subject and background, making accurate depth maps difficult to compute given the small 1mm baseline of the split pixels. Take a look at the Portrait Mode comparison below, with the new algorithm on the left vs. the old on the right.

5. Night Sight

Rather than simply rely on long exposures for low light photography, 'Night Sight' utilizes HDR+ burst mode photography to take usable photos in very dark situations. Previously, the Pixel 2 would never drop below 1/15s shutter speed, simply because it needed faster shutter speeds to maintain that 9-frame buffer with zero shutter lag. That does mean that even the Pixel 2 could, in very low light, effectively sample 0.6 seconds (9 x 1/15s), but sometimes that's not even enough to get a usable photo in extremely dark situations.

The Pixel 3 now has a 'Night Sight' mode which sacrifices the zero shutter lag and expects you to hold the camera steady after you've pressed the shutter button. When you do so, the camera will merge up to 15 frames, each with shutter speeds as low as, say, 1/3s, to get you an image equivalent to a 5 second exposure. But without the motion blur that would inevitably result from such a long exposure.

Put simply: even though there might be subject or handheld movement over the entire 5s span of the 15 frame burst, many of the the 1/3s 'snapshots' of that burst are likely to still be sharp, albeit possibly displaced relative to one another. The tile-based alignment of Google's 'robust merge' technology, however, can handle inter-frame movement by aligning objects that have moved and discarding tiles of any frame that have too much motion blur.

Have a look at the results below, which also shows you the benefit of the wider-angle, second front-facing 'groupie' camera:

Furthermore, Night Sight mode takes a machine-learning based approach to auto white balance. It's often very difficult to determine the dominant light source in such dark environments, so Google has opted to use learning-based AWB to yield natural looking images.

Final thoughts: simpler photography

The philosophy behind the Pixel camera - and for that matter the philosophy behind many smartphone cameras today - is one-button photography. A seamless experience without the need to activate various modes or features.

This is possible thanks to the computational approaches these devices embrace. The Pixel camera and software are designed to give you pleasing results without requiring you to think much about camera settings. Synthetic fill flash activates automatically with backlit human subjects, and Super Resolution automatically kicks in as you zoom.

At their best, these technologies allows you to focus on the moment

Motion photos turns on automatically when the camera detects interesting activity, and Top Shot now uses AI to automatically suggest the best photo of the bunch, even if it's a moment that occurred before you pressed the shutter button. Autofocus typically focuses on human subjects very reliably, but when you need to specify your subject, just tap on it and 'Motion Autofocus' will continue to track and focus on it very reliably. Perfect for your toddler or pet.

At their best, these technologies allow you to focus on the moment, perhaps even enjoy it, and sometimes even help you to capture memories you might have otherwise missed.

1In good light, these last 9 frames typically span the last 150ms before you pressed the shutter button. In very low light, it can span up to the last 0.6s.

2We were only told 'say, maybe 15 images' in conversation about the number of images in the buffer for Super Res Zoom and Night Sight. It may be more, it could be less, but we were at least told that it is more than 9 frames. One thing to keep in mind is that even if you have a 15-frame buffer, not all frames are guaranteed to be usable. For example, if in Night Sight one or more of these frames have too much subject motion blur, they're discarded.

Abstract
Topological insulators-materials that are insulating in the bulk but allow electrons to flow on their surface-are striking examples of materials in which topological invariants are manifested in robustness against perturbations such as defects and disorder1. Their most prominent feature is the emergence of edge states at the boundary between areas with different topological properties. The observable physical effect is unidirectional robust transport of these edge states. Topological insulators were originally observed in the integer quantum Hall effect2 (in which conductance is quantized in a strong magnetic field) and subsequently suggested3-5 and observed6 to exist without a magnetic field, by virtue of other effects such as strong spin-orbit interaction. These were systems of correlated electrons. During the past decade, the concepts of topological physics have been introduced into other fields, including microwaves7,8, photonic systems9,10, cold atoms11,12, acoustics13,14 and even mechanics15. Recently, topological insulators were suggested to be possible in exciton-polariton systems16-18 organized as honeycomb (graphene-like) lattices, under the influence of a magnetic field. Exciton-polaritons are part-light, part-matter quasiparticles that emerge from strong coupling of quantum-well excitons and cavity photons19. Accordingly, the predicted topological effects differ from all those demonstrated thus far. Here we demonstrate experimentally an exciton-polariton topological insulator. Our lattice of coupled semiconductor microcavities is excited non-resonantly by a laser, and an applied magnetic field leads to the unidirectional flow of a polariton wavepacket around the edge of the array. This chiral edge mode is populated by a polariton condensation mechanism. We use scanning imaging techniques in real space and Fourier space to measure photoluminescence and thus visualize the mode as it propagates. We demonstrate that the topological edge mode goes around defects, and that its propagation direction can be reversed by inverting the applied magnetic field. Our exciton-polariton topological insulator paves the way for topological phenomena that involve light-matter interaction, amplification and the interaction of exciton-polaritons as a nonlinear many-body system.

          Here's How the Human Mind Is Wired For Magical Thinking       Cache   Translate Page

Are you human? Then at some level you believe in magic. Specific beliefs about miracles and other kinds of magic may get handed down within a religious or cultural tradition, but we all are prone to magical thinking, even the most rigorous scientist or die-hard skeptic. At least that’s what psychological research suggests. In carefully structured experiments, people who don’t consciously believe in magic behave as if they unconsciously do.

Our tendency toward magical thinking derives from the structure of human cognition. Types of thinking that help us survive and thrive—like pattern matching, seeking cause-and effect-relationships, and attending to unusual events—also incline us to specific glitches in rationality. Understanding these flaws in human information processing makes it easier to understand why so many people see miracles and other kinds of magic in the world around us.

Snap judgments about cause and effect – When two things happen close in time or close in space without an obvious external cause, we tend to assume that one caused the other, instinctively equating correlation and causation. Our brains are constantly scanning for causes and effects; and we pair them up quickly, often before conscious processing can take place.

The evidence can be seen in magnetic resonance images according to neuroscientist Ben Parrish. When people watch a magician make a coin disappear, activity spikes immediately in the part of the brain that generates hypotheses about uncertain situations.

If aphids infest your rose bush and the leaves curl up, it is useful to suspect that one likely caused the other. But the same associative process is not so helpful when your brain tells you that a rabbit appeared from a hat because a magician waved his wand or that your headache went away because you prayed.

Paranoia (also known as agenticity, hyperactive agency detection or hyperactive intentionality detection) – The human mind puts inanimate objects and active agents in two very different categories. While inanimate objects are interchangeable, we treat agency as if it comes from an internal essence, a unique living force. But sometimes we get these categories crossed.

While we rarely treat humans as if they were inanimate objects, the opposite is not true. For example, young children are quick to treat a stuffed animal as if it were a living thing. One of the most beloved children’s stories in the English language is The Velveteen Rabbit, in which a stuffed rabbit becomes flesh and blood because he is loved by a child. We also tend to think by default that sounds and events were caused intentionally by a conscious agent. “He did it on puuurpose!” a young child wails when an older brother hurts them, whether it is true or not.

Research shows that infants tend to assume the presence of an active agent or intentionality whenever they see non-inertial movement. This would have had survival value for our ancestors. In the words of neurologist Steven Novela,

“We are descended from hominids who were more paranoid and had hyperactive agency detection, because they were less likely to be eaten by predators.

“We can extrapolate from “non-inertial movement”, or movement that cannot be easily explained as a passive reaction to natural forces, to more and more complex “actions.” [Hyperactive Agency Detection Device] detects more than movement, it can detect a pattern in otherwise unrelated events, details that defy easy explanation, or consequences that seem out of proportion to the alleged causes. When HADD is triggered we tend to see a hidden agent working behind the scenes, making events unfold the way they do, and perhaps even deliberately hiding its own tracks.”

We humans are social animals, and as our ancestors sought to understand natural events, it was natural to interpret them in social terms. It is still natural for us to do so today.

Apophenia (also known as patternicity) – Our relentless search for patterns is one of humanity’s greatest cognitive strengths. It defines who we are as a species, and it is fundamental to the explosion of human life across the planet. But it also means we have a tendency to see connections in unrelated events.

Apophenia underlies conspiracy theories and many kinds of parapsychology. Taken to an extreme it plagues people with schizophrenia who sometimes can’t get away from the feeling that unrelated events around them are acutely meaningful. “Our greatest challenge may be learning to bear incoherence,” says psychologist Bruce Poulsen. But even when we are willing to live with uncertainty and mystery, our brains keep pulling to fill in the unknown—and religions are more than willing to help.

Pareidolia – One common type of apophenia is pareidolia, perceiving nonexistent patterns in visual and auditory input. We see and hear things that aren’t really there, even in white noise or random forms like ink blots.

One former meth addict describes how drug use gradually turned background noise into intelligible messages. When things go wrong with neurotransmitters, as in schizophrenia, the same progression can happen to people who aren’t using drugs.

But nothing has to be wrong with our brains for us to see meaningful patterns where they don’t actually exist. Every child has seen a rabbit in a cloud or a monster in the shadow cast by moonlight through a bedroom window. The marbled stone on my bathroom floor contains the image of a rocket ship or flying penis, or swimming amoeba; members of the household don’t agree on which, but we all see something in that tile.

The most common kind of pareidolia is the tendency to see faces in inanimate objects. Infants respond to two black dots and a slash as a human face, suggesting that parts of our brain are highly tuned for recognizing and interpreting facial information. It should come as no surprise, then, when people see the faces of Jesus, Mary and devils in objects as disparateas a Cheeto, a banana skin, an ancient shroud, or even a dog’s bum. Miraculous? No, but it’s only natural that we think so.

Attraction to unusual or counter-intuitive events – We habituate to the familiar, but the unexpected captures our attention. This thought pattern is highly efficient, because it means we aren’t squandering mental energy on things that stay the same. Instead, we can attend to whatever is moving or changing or novel or puzzling.

This tendency helps us to stay safe (to avoid getting run over one needs to focus on the one moving car in an otherwise static landscape), and it helps us to make discoveries. As Isaac Asimov famously said, “The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not “Eureka!” (I found it!) but “That’s funny …”. Unfortunately, this means we also love to tell stories that violate the expected, stories about the exception rather than the rule—including miracle stories.

Poor statistical intuition and reasoning – We humans are terrible at predicting the likelihood of rare events, which can make common occurrences seem miraculous. Most events that people experience as “miraculous” are predictably common given real-world base rates and population sizes, but that is not how they seem.

Our intuitive statistics so wildly miss the mark that an entire book could be written about how readily we get wowed and seek extraordinary explanations for events that we perceive as rare but actually aren’t. In fact, books have been written on this topic, and to do it justice I will dive in later. Suffice to say that people who believe in paranormal phenomena appear to do worse at statistical inference than others.

Glitches like these—and others—lay the foundation for seemingly supernatural and paranormal experiences. Our ancient ancestors may have seen magical beings in the world around them. Religious people may find miracles in recovery from cancer or empty parking spots. New Agers may turn quantum theory into woo. Psychics and paranormal aficionados may convince themselves that they’re onto something. But don’t get too smug. Really, when it comes to magical thinking, we’re all in this together.

Everything about the new 85-inch 8K TV in Samsung's Q900 series just seems like a beast. Larger-than-life. From the specs to the crazy-high price tag (a mere $15,000). Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers are atom-like quantum emitters in diamonds, with narrow orbital transition linewidth and a long-lived spin coherence that persists to room temperature. Diamond-based microelectromechanical system (MEMS) devices integrate these quantum defects with classical mechanics, providing direct coupling between NV center spin/orbital states and phonons in a mechanical resonator. Using a GHz diamond high-overtone bulk acoustic resonator (HBAR), The Fuchs group has poineered the mechanical coherent control of NV-center spin states. As an extention to spin control, we recently demonstrated mechanical manipulation of the orbital states of a single NV center.

A drawback of an HBAR device is the large mode volume and hence the small strain coupling to an NV center. To imporve the coupling, we are developing a semi-confocal diamond MEMS device that is laterally 30 times smaller and more power efficient, aiming to realize the control of mechanical quantum states using diamond spins, which is potentially useful for quantum-enhanced metrology and quantum information processing.
