          Kelebihan dan Kekurangan Mengubah Celah Elektroda Busi      Cache   Translate Page, Jakarta - Busi memiliki fungsi sangat vital pada kendaraan, Proses pembakaran tak dapat terjadi tanpa adanya busi. Saat ini busi ditawarkan dengan berbagai material pembentuk. Mungkin Anda mengenal busi yang terbuat dari nikel, platinum hingga iridium. Masing-masing material memiliki keunggulan performa yang berbeda.

Sebenarnya performa busi tak hanya dipengaruhi material pembentuk. Desain elektroda juga ikut berperan. Elektroda merupakan bagian kepala busi yang berada di dalam ruang silinder, bertugas mengalirkan arus listrik untuk menciptakan percikan api. Terdapat dua elektroda pada busi, centre dan ground.

Keduanya dipisahkan oleh celah. Pada area itu, percikan api membakar campuran bahan bakar dan udara dalam ruang silinder. Celah ini sendiri beragam ukurannya pada tiap busi, biasanya disesuaikan sesuai kebutuhan mesin kendaraan.

“Celah busi itu sudah diset sesuai kebutuhan mesin yang digunakan pada saat pembuatan. Biasanya dimulai dari 0.7 sampai 1.5mm,” jelas Diko Octavian selaku Technical Support PT NGK Busi Indonesia kepada, Senin (08/10/2018).

Menariknya, celah busi dapat diakali untuk meningkatkan performa. Caranya dipersempit atau diperlebar. Menurut Diko, mengubah celah elektroda memiliki dampak, hanya saja pemilihannya (melebar atau menyempit) turut didasari kebutuhan spesifikasi mesin atau modifikasi yang diinginkan. Soalnya, masing-masing modifikasi memiliki kelebihan dan kekurangan. Berikut jabarannya.



Memperbesar celah elektroda

Memperlebar celah elektroda bisa meningkatkan performa mesin. Mekanismenya seperti ini. Celah lebar memiliki ruang pembentukan percikan api lebih luas. Akibatnya quenching effect (penyaluran panas melalui elektroda) berkurang dibandingkan ukuran celah standar. Hasilnya percikan api mudah terbentuk karena panasnya terpusat di area celah elektroda. Panas yang optimal mempercepat proses terbentuknya pembakaran, bahkan lebih besar.

“Secara teori celah besar menguntungkan untuk memberi jalan proses pembesaran api, karena titik api yang dimulai dari tengah sedikit kena hambatan,” jelas Diko.

Hanya saja, setingan ini berisiko bila tak dibarengi penguatan komponen elektrikal lainnya agar tegangan yang dibutuhkan ikut membesar. Jika tak diimbangi, gejala mesin seperti sulit dinyalakan dan kegagalan terciptanya percikan api (misfire), khususnya pada kecepatan tinggi dapat terjadi. Kendaraan pada momen tertentu terasa seperti kehilangan tenaga dan terasa kasar saat posisi idle.

Selain karena jaraknya, terdapat faktor lain mempengaruhi, seperti kompresi mesin. Perlu diketahui, campuran bahan bakar dan udara yang berada di celah elektroda bersifat isolator sehingga membuat aliran listrik sulit melewatinya. Tetapi saat tegangan meningkat, struktur gas di antara elektroda terionisiasi. Gas yang terionisasi menjadi bersifat konduktor, sehingga arus listrik dapat mengalir dan menciptakan percikan api. Artinya, semakin tinggi kompresi, campuran bahan bakar dan udara semakin padat. Karena itu, dibutuhkan tegangan lebih besar agar arus listrik dapat mengalir memicu pembentukan percikan api.

“Dengan celah besar otomatis transfer energi listrik yang dibutuhkan juga harus kuat. Nah, ini bergantung pada spesifikasi koil atau CDI atau komponen listrik pendukung sebelum busi,” jelas Diko.



Mempersempit celah elektroda

Kondisi berbeda terjadi pada celah elektroda yang diperpendek. Dampak positif dari memperkecil jarak, aliran listrik yang fokus atau terpecik stabil. Selain itu, dengan celah kecil maka proses transfer energi listrik relatif lebih ringan. Dampaknya tentu menghemat voltase.

“Celah kecil biasanya berfungsi meminimalisir aliran listrik yang tidak fokus. Artinya celah kecil sangat bagus utuk menjaga titik api tetap fokus,” jelas Diko.

Tetapi celah pendek juga memiliki kekurangan. Karena area pembakarannya yang sempit, quenching effect-nya cukup tinggi atau panas yang dialirkan elektroda keluar besar. Hal itu bisa menyebabkan munculnya percikan api melemah, pembakaran tak sempurna atau bahkan tidak terjadi sama sekali akibat kurangnya panas.

Selain itu, menurut Diko, celah kecil rentan terhadap kejutan listrik yang tiba-tiba berubah. Kondisi ini mempengaruhi kecepatan erosi elektroda atau membuatnya semakin merenggang. Erosi yang terjadi juga disebabkan adanya panas berlebih pada elektroda.

Dampak lainnya, pembentukan karbon di sekitar elektroda yang cepat. Kondisi ini terjadi akibat kurang sempurnanya proses pembakaran. Bila karbon yang menutupi elektroda terlalu pekat, misfire terjadi akibat tidak bisanya arus listrik mengalir untuk membentuk percikan api.
