  • Ualá, an Argentinian mobile banking startup, has raised $34 million in a new round of funding led by Goldman Sachs's venture unit, along with investors including billionaire George Soros' family office and Point 72 Venture, the early-stage VC firm funded by Steve Cohen.
  • The company - which offers a financial management app and a fee-free prepaid MasterCard - aims to disrupt the traditional retail banking infrastructure, according to Pierpaolo Barbieri, founder and CEO of Ualá.

Goldman Sachs' venture unit is leading a new round of investment in an Argentinian fintech company backed by billionaire investors George Soros and Steven Cohen.

Ualá, the one-year-old mobile banking startup, raised $34 million in its series B round led by Goldman Sachs Investment Partners, along with existing investors including a private fund managed by Soros Fund Management, Jefferies, the venture arm of Steve Cohen's Point 72, and entrepreneur Kevin Ryan, according to an announcement seen by Business Insider.

Goldman Sachs provided over half of the capital, according to Pierpaolo Barbieri, founder and CEO of Ualá.

The Buenos Aires-based startup offers a personal financial management app that is linked to a prepaid Mastercard, which doesn't charge opening fees, transaction fees, and renewal fees. In the span of one year, the company has issued 400,000 cards, which allow users to top up cellphones, make purchases, and conduct P2P money transfers.

"Our goal is to replace the traditional retail banking infrastructure with Ualá," Barbieri said.

Over 50% of people in Argentina had never had a card before and are only operating in cash, so the company aims to provide these people financial inclusion by giving them access to financial system, he added.

“Ualá’s product offering reduces both cost and friction, while providing a great consumer experience,” said Christopher Dawe, cohead of Goldman Sachs Investment Partners venture capital & growth equity team. “We are excited by the company’s mission of improving access to critical financial services and look forward to partnering with the Ualá team on their next phase of growth.”

Ualá will tap into the new fund to boost its user growth, expand its headcount, and execute the launch of a credit and savings platforms, according to the announcement.

With the CBAC, East Meets West in Search of Adoption and Innovation      Cache   Translate Page
CBAC

The noise that surrounds economic relations between the United States and China is amping up exponentially. You can thank the latest trade wars for that, as fresh tensions boil over between the two nations who are currently trading new tariffs on imports, with no shortage of ill will underpinning the moves.

But the Chinese government’s ire is not just outward-facing. As a country where ICOs are currently not allowed, exchanges have had their bank accounts frozen, and internet and mobile access to cryptocurrency trading information has been banned, China is taking an equally hard line on a wide range of crypto-centric activities within its own borders. All this despite a stark dichotomy, wherein over 50 percent of the worldwide mining population resided within its borders in 2017, and cryptocurrency adoption is outpacing most other countries.

While trade war bullets may be flying thick and fast between these two mega-economies, the key to a better Chinese blockchain sector just may be unlocked by deploying cooperative forces in the United States, as seen by the recent launch of a New York City office for the China Blockchain Application Center (CBAC). The CBAC NY was founded with the hope of paving the way for rapid blockchain adoption in China, in part by picking up regulatory best practices from the United States, all while fostering blockchain and crypto collaboration between the two nations.

An early-stage, non-governmental organization (NGO) established in 2015, the CBAC collaborates with regulatory bodies to develop comprehensive regulations, encourage the application of blockchain technology in traditional industries, and connect Chinese practitioners with peers around the world. By helping to develop increased regulations, blockchain industry applications and international connections, members of the CBAC are hoping to elevate blockchain’s role in China’s $12 trillion economy.

Crypto Challenges in China

One of the speakers at a well-attended August launch party in NYC’s financial district was Stewie Zhu, founder and CEO of the distributed banking public blockchain Distributed Credit Chain (DCC), and a standing committee member of the CBAC. While ICO scams and other bad actors have significantly hindered progress in his home country, Zhu sees plenty of near-term potential for crypto and blockchain technology there.

“While China has prohibited the sale of new cryptocurrencies through ICOs since early last September, there is still a big appetite for the application of blockchain technology,” Zhu told Bitcoin Magazine. “In fact, a [recent] Chinese Supreme Court ruling has stated that blockchain technology can be used to authenticate evidence in legal contexts. The trading of cryptocurrencies is possible, but the government is trying to create financial stability to minimize any illegal activity. The Chinese government is eager to make considerable strides on the technology front, and while stringent, they are trying to ensure that cryptocurrency trading is done responsibly.

“There are challenges behind blockchain technology as it relates to banking,” Zhu continued, “because it requires a reconstruction of long-standing relationships in the current market, as well as time for citizens to understand the mechanisms behind using blockchain. Companies may need to make significant changes to their daily operations to incorporate blockchain, not to mention the time and resources needed for pre-application research.”

Zhu pointed out that it also takes time for private citizens to fully understand and trust cryptocurrency. Between price swings and security vulnerabilities, they may be leery of entering the market, he believes.

“Given the volatility in the crypto market and the negative news about problematic ICOs, individual customers can be cautious of tokens,” he said. “Security is also an issue. Blockchain technology is not perfect. We still need more R&D to develop ways to prevent potential threats such as the 51% attack, where an organization controlling the majority of network mining power can prevent transactions by others and allow its own coin to be spent twice (double spending). So long as these threats exist, many companies may not see blockchain as a practical tool.”

Part of a Bigger Picture

A successful push by the Chinese government to instill crypto confidence goes beyond better banking and protecting consumers, however.

“The Chinese government is trying to shift the economy from manufacturing-based to a more value-added, services-based, to move from being the factory of the world to being the service provider of the world, which is a natural economic evolution that you would expect from any country as they try to level-up,” Zennon Kapron observed in an interview with Bitcoin Magazine. Kapron is the founder of Kapronasia, a Singapore-based firm focused on providing insights into Asia's financial industry.

“China has always tried to stay ahead and it’s used technology as a way of leveraging that with things like AI, machine learning, and some of the camera/surveillance technology as a way for the country to differentiate itself. From an economic perspective, it’s a very challenging transition to make because you're trying to shift demands from import/export to domestic consumption, while you've got a banking system that's relatively new that has a lot of challenges internally. So the government wants to avoid risk to the financial system, as well as the economy as a whole, and largely a lot of the pushback that we've seen from the government on cryptocurrencies is because of that.”

While Kapron is guarded on the immediate impact of blockchain on banking within China, he sees a real near-future need for applying distributed ledger to other fields.

“If we look at health records and food provenance in China, in certain ways [blockchain] would allow China to become coordinated and move much quicker, so the government is very open to the idea of launching technology and seems to be very supportive of it. That support is coming from the idea that, first of all, there are challenges that can be solved and, second of all, if they establish a leading edge around blockchain that could be a competitive advantage for them going forward.”

For Zhu, however, the most tantalizing possibilities for blockchain, in China and elsewhere, lay firmly within the financial realm.

“Blockchain can provide a comprehensive solution to multiple problems in the current financial industry,” he stated. “First off, it provides a decentralized structure, which will break the data monopoly of big, traditional banks and allows individual customers to control their own information. Second, the information on the chain cannot be changed or tampered with, which helps to enhance data security, one of the most important aspects in credit and banking. Third, while enhancing data security, blockchain also helps improve transparency, because every action is recorded on a smart contract and is always trackable.

“In my opinion, the philosophy behind blockchain is security and sharing,” added Zhu. “This technology connects people around the world, allowing them to access reliable information in a more efficient manner.”

Zhu has applied this outlook to his twin goals of growing his company, DCC, while also improving the CBAC’s prospects. For the industry to succeed, he believes it needs to embrace the same cooperation that blockchain facilitates by design.

“Collaboration is very important for companies in the tech sector, especially in an emerging industry like blockchain,” he said. “By joining the CBAC, I’d like to create a connection between the Chinese government authorities, as well as unite projects from both geographies and accelerate development processes. We would like to help our peers and DCC connect with additional experts in the space so that we can grow together at a much faster rate.

“Any new industry, at its birth, will experience volatility before the period of stable, healthy growth. I’d like to work as an active member of the CBAC on the development of industrial regulations, so that the blockchain industry will become more organized, allowing individual companies to fully unleash their potential.”

Coming to America

With the launch of a New York City presence, the CBAC is looking to foster collaboration not just between companies but between countries. Despite the many stumbles of Wall Street and the SEC in their approaches to crypto, Zhu maintains that both entities represent a “gold standard” of regulation, and the CBAC NY is in place specifically to model their best practices.

“As many countries are exploring and experimenting regulations for the blockchain industry, the U.S. is at the forefront and is doing a good job of placing certain safeguards and protection for investors stepping into the ICO world,” he said. “For example, the SEC is taking steps to create regulatory standards with the ‘Howey Test’ which determines whether cryptocurrencies are securities and thus subject to federal securities laws. Also, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy (OIEA) has published a report that seeks to warn investors of the potential ‘risks associated with self-directed Individual Retirement Accounts (self-directed IRAs)’ in which ICOs and cryptocurrencies are highlighted.”

Backed by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Financial Work, the CBAC NY’s mission is to arrange meetings with U.S. regulators and lawyers to gain insight into how the U.S. is setting such standards. From there, the organization will work to push those standards to the top of regulatory authorities in China to help create change. Ultimately, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology develops policies for the blockchain industry.

Seizing Momentum

A range of attendees present at the CBAC NY launch, including blockchain projects, entrepreneurs, regulators, academics, investment firms and exchanges across China and the U.S., indicated the high stakes and hopes for the organization’s success.

“The promise of decentralization and the new platforms and applications currently in development is to lead towards a much more connected world that will make financial value transfer faster, easier, and cheaper,” David Namdar, co-head of trading for the crypto asset merchant bank Galaxy Digital, told Bitcoin Magazine. “As the regulatory landscape develops globally, the CBAC can be instrumental in helping China to regulate blockchain in a way that leads toward greater involvement in an improved global financial ecosystem.

“I have been spending more and more time in Asia this year as we’ve expanded Galaxy Digital to Hong Kong and Tokyo,” Namdar continues, “and have been blown away by the amount of activity and enthusiasm around cryptocurrencies and blockchain applications. In China, I believe there is a lot of momentum as more and more people become educated about the space and understand the technology and it’s potential. However, it continues to be an important challenge to promote innovation around actual uses while curbing speculation.”

While classifying the record of non-profit organizations in influencing Chinese government policy as “hit or miss,” Kapronasia’s Zennon Kapron sees how an improved blockchain ecosystem could translate into major gains for the country with the world’s largest economy in terms of purchasing power parity.

“Certainly, China has become an epicenter of blockchain development,” he stated, “and China moves at China speed: [For example] we did a study a couple of years ago and we looked at cash usage in China. You think about China being a very cash-driven society. 60 percent of all retail transactions in 2010 were done with cash, and we expect that to drop in half to 30 percent by 2020. That shift, considering the population and considering the amount of money that that represents is massive. China can move very quickly on something like this, and so when we look at blockchain development in general and then regulation around blockchain, China could very well be a leader in this space as we go forward.”

“In China, the blockchain industry is growing quickly,” Zhu affirmed. “According to CoinTelegraph, in 2017, the most patent filings for blockchain technology to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) came from China, so we anticipate further applications of blockchain in China in the form of innovation in technology and banking/Internet finance. As I mentioned earlier, China is already using blockchain in a legal context and this type of growth will only continue to increase.”

With its massive footprint, rich resources, deep talent and influencers like the CBAC at work, China looms as a tempting frontier for outside operators in search of the ultimate blockchain destination.

“One of our core missions is to help grow the entire industry globally through technological development, investment and sensible regulation,” says Namdar. “Groups like the CBAC play an important role in education and cross-collaboration efforts with wide-reaching global impact.”

Still, in the eyes of educated observers like Kapron, it’s too early to say definitively if China, crypto and blockchain technology are bound for a copacetic outcome.

“I think we've seen very positive output from them in terms of their opinion and the way they think it could go, but that could change rapidly if there is a risk to the financial system,” he said.

“We're at the very early days right now, and, for most investors or either funds or individuals overseas that are looking at investing in Chinese blockchain projects, it's critical to understand the ecosystem. There are potentially outsized returns in China from some of these platforms, but it still remains to be seen how successful they are and how much the government allows things to move forward.”

Chinese and US Investors Team Up to Create a Global Crypto Investment Fund      Cache   Translate Page
Chinese and US Investors Team Up to Create a Global Crypto Investment Fund

The latest crypto investment fund on the block is Dragonfly Ventures, a $100 million traditional venture fund investing only in crypto assets, managed by partners Alexander Pack from Bain Capital Ventures and Bo Feng, founding partner of Ceyuan Ventures.

“We come at crypto as generalist venture capitalists who have been investing in internet technology for decades. With Dragonfly, we have decided to go all-in on crypto, because we believe that crypto is the most interesting tech trend today by far,” said Dragonfly managing partner and Bain Capital advisor Alexander Pack in an interview with Bitcoin Magazine.

“The ability to use technology to redefine fundamental social constructs like money, value, and how value is exchanged across borders, is a once in a century opportunity that could be bigger than the internet,” he added.

Pack has been investing in cryptocurrencies and blockchain businesses for more than four years at various venture capital firms in the U.S. and Asia but wanted to create a fund that was solely for cryptocurrency businesses.

He describes Dragonfly as “a fully unconstrained venture fund for the crypto asset class, investing globally and across all asset types. We even invest significantly in other cryptofunds, as well as make direct investments in tokens and startups.”

Dragonfly has already attracted technology founders and investors from across the U.S. and Asia, including Salil Deshpande (Bain Capital Ventures), Marc Andreessen and Chris Dixon (A16Z), Cyan Banister (Founders Fund) and Olaf Carlson-Wee (Polychain Capital).

A China-U.S. Fund

Headquartered in San Francisco and Beijing, Dragonfly Capital Partners have identified what they see as a new market opportunity in bridging the gap between East and West, investing in crypto businesses across both continents.

Managing partner Bo Feng is a founder of Ceyuan Ventures. In the ‘90s he launched the China business of Robertson Stephens, a high-tech investment bank, and is the largest investor in the exchange OKEx.

“I see a parallel between the Internet boom in the ‘90s and the current cryptocurrency market opportunity. The crypto revolution may be even bigger than the internet and more global,” says Feng.

According to Feng, Dragonfly takes an “ecosystem approach,” investing in fund managers around the world and connecting the top technologists from the West to investing in fund managers around the world, as well as connecting top technologists from the West with the largest crypto companies and user bases in Asia.

Asian investors include Bitmain, OKEx, Neil Shen (head of Sequoia China), Eric Xu (founder of Baidu), Bob Xiaoping Xu (founding partner of Zhenfund), Zhang Tao (chairman and founder of Meituan-Dianping), Bao Fan (founder and CEO of

China Renaissance Bank), Cai Wensheng (founder and chairman of Meitu), Justin Tang (founder and CEO of X Financial, eLong), JP Gan (Qiming Venture Partners), and Annie Xu (head and general manager of Alibaba U.S.).

“We have a unique opportunity to back and bring together the leading participants in the decentralized economy — from fund managers to token project leaders, from Beijing to San Francisco to Berlin,” said Feng.

Part of a Growing Investment Trend

Dragonfly is launching with a portfolio of 20 investments, including tech-driven crypto funds and asset managers, decentralized financial infrastructure such as the cryptocurrency Basis, and foundational protocols such as Spacemesh and Oasis Labs.

A recent report by blockchain research group Diar identified a new trend among investors. While traditional investment in crypto products has doubled and continues to grow, ICOs themselves have lost 70 percent in value.

The Diar report shows that almost $3.9 billion in investments was raised in the first three quarters of 2018, 280 percent of what was raised in 2017. The report also indicates an increase in the number of investment deals — almost twice the number recorded in the previous year.

“We invest in any market condition and actually are investing at a faster pace during this downturn than we anticipated, since in our opinion the quality of projects and founders has never been higher,” said Pack.

Traditional venture capital investments are leveraging the decline in ICOs as the cryptocurrency industry tries to find its bearings amid regulatory shifts and losses across crypto markets, notes the Diar report.

Pack told us that the investment strategy for Dragonfly is based on three principles.

“We have three theses that guide our investment philosophy: that the decentralized economy will take trillion dollar bites out of the centralized economy, that pick-and-shovel tech startups will emerge as bridges between the decentralized and centralized economies, and that crypto assets will one day be the most liquid and traded financial assets in the world,” said Pack.

“Today, large barriers prevent mainstream and institutional users from joining the decentralized economy. We are investing heavily in teams that are breaking down those barriers, such as institutional-grade trading infrastructure and general scaling solutions. We look forward to those launching and gaining traction in the next year,” added Pack.

Bitfinex Challenges Insolvency Rumors, Provides Proof of Wallet Reserves      Cache   Translate Page
Bitfinex Solvency

Top-three cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex is pushing back against claims that call its solvency into question.

The Hong Kong-based company released a blog post on October 7, 2017, that states, contrary to recent rumors, it is not insolvent. In its defense, the company provides links to its public wallet addresses, stating that hearsay in spite of these publicly verifiable records is “perhaps indicative of a targeted campaign based on nothing but fiction.”

“Bitfinex is not insolvent, and a constant stream of Medium articles claiming otherwise is not going to change this. As one of only a very few exchanges operating since 2013, with a small team and low operating costs, we do not entirely understand the arguments that purport to show us to be insolvent without providing any explanation about why.”

Over the weekend, a since-removed Medium post by user ProofofResearch warns readers to exit Bitfinex, alleging that complaints of restricted and frozen withdrawals expose its insolvency. The post goes on to air grievances shared on Reddit regarding these withdrawal issues, and the author accuses r/bitfinex moderators of censoring such posts.

“Both fiat and cryptocurrency withdrawals are functioning as normal. Verified Bitfinex users can freely withdraw Euros, Japanese Yen, Pounds Sterling and U.S. Dollars. Complications continue to exist for us in the domain of fiat transactions, as they do for most cryptocurrency-related organisations,” Bitfinex writes in its post.

To further quell community skepticism, Bitfinex offered block explorer links to its bitcoin, ether and eos cold wallet reserves. Not including fiat holdings, the exchange states that these wallets “represent a small fraction of Bitfinex cryptocurrency holdings.”

Collectively, the wallets hold just over $1.5 billion in assets. The majority of this fortune is accrued in the exchange’s bitcoin wallet, which holds 148,467 BTC worth roughly $989 million at current exchange rates. Its second largest holding, the exchange’s ether wallet contains 1,726,496 ETH (~$395 million), and its eos reserves weigh in at 35,374,975 ($209 million).

Wrestling Against Scrutiny

Bitfinex’s clarifying its financial position comes after news broke last week that one of its former banking partners is looking for a buyer, a development that ProofofResearch argues further points to Bitfinex’s own financial troubles.

Searching for a bailout of sorts, the Puerto Rican Noble Bank is “no longer profitable,” according to a source close to the matter who tipped the news to Bloomberg. With Noble Bank’s cryptocurrency partners reportedly jumping ship, Bitfinex has also severed its relationship with the financial firm, affirming in its blog post that “[stories] and allegations currently circulating mentioning an entity called Noble Bank have no impact on [its] operations, survivability, or solvency.”

Popular stablecoin Tether also terminated its relationship with the bank. Operated by a like CEO in Jan Ludovicus van der Velde, Tether’s and Bitfinex’s operations, purportedly, are intrinsically linked, and the two companies have been long entangled in a conspiracy that charges Tether is not fully backed by U.S. dollar reserves.

An academic report that points to Tether’s artificially inflating bitcoin’s price during the 2017 run-up has only stoked skepticism. Though, an earlier study provides evidence to the contrary, and Tether has produced an in-house attestation overseen by the Freeh Sporkin & Sullivan law firm to clear its name. However, this attestation is not an official audit, something that Tether states is impossible for a company in its position to attain, even as other stablecoin projects have suggested otherwise.

UK's Oldest Crypto Exchange Prepares for Employee Layoffs      Cache   Translate Page
Coinfloor Layoffs

In what may be a sign that business in the cryptocurrency space is in a winding down phase, U.K.-based bitcoin exchange Coinfloor is bidding adieu to half of its staff.

The company, which claims to be the oldest crypto exchange in London, has roughly 40 employees. More than half of them will be let go, Financial News reported, citing two sources close to the matter. The news broke early today, October 8, 2018.

Coinfloor CEO Obi Nwosu confirmed the layoffs but declined to spell out exactly how many employees would be let go. He told Financial News the staff cuts were a normal response to a changing market environment.

Following the market’s downturn at the beginning of 2018, a lot is changing in the cryptocurrency business. Since the beginning of the year, bitcoin has lost more than half of its value, and regulations across the globe are heating up. China has been taking increased action to clamp down on all things cryptocurrency, and, in the U.S., regulators are starting to get tough with crypto exchanges, unregistered securities dealers and questionable initial coin offerings.

Amidst this shifting landscape, Coinfloor is not the only one to feel the market’s pinch. In September, Jesse Powell, the CEO of San Francisco-based exchange Kraken, said the company was cutting 10 percent of its client services team in a “cost-saving measure,” but denied rumors that the layoffs would amount to any more than that. At the time of publication, Kraken is the 23rd largest exchange by trading volume.

Despite the market downturn, some exchanges continue to paint a rosy picture. Binance boasted that it expected a net profit of $500 million to $1 billion in 2018, according to its chief executive officer. But without seeing the company’s financials, it is hard to get a clear view on the full picture.

Typically, exchanges make a lucrative profit, which is why so many have entered the game as of late. To date, there are 219 crypto exchanges all competing for each other’s business. But if the current market downturn continues, more will likely have to make adjustments or else bow out.

Founded in 2013, Coinfloor was one of the first exchanges onto the scene. Its big pitch early on was that it followed strict know-your-customer (KYC) and anti-money-laundering (AML) procedures to ensure the integrity of its users and traders.

According to its website, the exchange is backed by TransferWise founder Taavet Hinrikus, venture capital firm Passion Capital and Adam Knight, a former managing director at Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse.

Binance to Make Listing Fees Transparent, Give Proceeds to Charity      Cache   Translate Page
Binance charity

Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, said that it will make new cryptocurrency listing fees transparent and donate 100 percent of those fees to charity.

The exchange made the announcement today, October 8, 2018, in a blog post where it stated that a listing fee would now be more appropriately called a “donation.”

Listing fees have been a pain point for cryptocurrency projects. Projects depend on getting their coins listed on exchanges for liquidity. News of getting listed on a major exchange can cause a coin to spike in value overnight. Yet, many projects have complained of exorbitant listing fees.

In April 2018, Bloomberg reported that according to Autonomous Research some crypto trading platforms were charging $1 million to $3 million to list a token — 10 times more than what a traditional exchange, like Nasdaq, demands for securities.

Binance, which now handles most of its operations out of Malta, has been a target of many of those complaints. In August 2018, Christopher Franko, co-founder of Expanse, a fork of Ethereum, tweeted that Binance wanted to charge 400 bitcoin ($2.5 million) to list a coin. Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao refuted the accusation. “We don't list shitcoins even if they pay 400 or 4,000 BTC,” he tweeted.

Now, according to Binance, cryptocurrency projects will be able to name their price. “Binance will not dictate a number, nor is there a minimum required listing fee,” the exchange said, adding that it won’t be swayed by larger bids either. “A large donation does not guarantee or in any way influence the outcome of our listing review process.”

Once the two parties reach an agreement, the exchange said it will disclose the fee via its charity arm Blockchain Charity Foundation. Binance launched the arm in Malta in July 2018 as a way to funnel some of its profits to philanthropic endeavors. The foundation is chaired by Helen Hai, a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.

“Hope others will follow,” CZ tweeted earlier today, alluding to the announcement.

Binance was originally founded in Hong Kong in 2017. Within six months, it was already touted as one of the biggest crypto exchanges in the space. Its growth is largely due to its ability to onboard new coins quickly. The exchange currently has 387 crypto-to-crypto trading pairs.

PwC and Cred Partner to Develop Cryptocurrency Trading Technology      Cache   Translate Page
PwC Cred

Global professional services firm PwC has partnered with decentralized lending platform Cred to boost trust in the cryptocurrency space and bring in more traders by advancing stablecoin technology.

PwC consists of several different financial firms and spans across 158 countries. The company currently boasts over 200,000 employees serving in quality assurance, advisory and tax service positions.

Founded by former PayPal technologists Dan Schatt and Lu Hua, Cred seeks to offer open access to cryptocurrency-based credit options, regardless of where the seeker may reside. With offices in Munich, San Francisco, Shanghai, Sydney and Singapore, the company has utilized the blockchain to secure over $250 million in lending capital for its clients.

Speaking with Bitcoin Magazine, Schatt describes the partnership as a milestone in the crypto industry. “This is one of the first times PwC has formed a joint business relationship with a company focused on the blockchain and crypto,” he explains.

“We’re looking to help people borrow crypto the way they would fiat and treat it like any other asset class. If you go to any bank, it won’t offer crypto loans because it doesn’t acknowledge crypto as a real asset class. This is bad because we need new ways of looking at custody and lending, and this is the first time a big accounting firm has said it would work with a company in this space.”

One of the biggest problems facing cryptocurrency is volatility. Schatt says that volatility exists because the crypto market lacks liquidity, and trading can frequently result in price swings. Many institutional investors refuse to get involved out of concern that their funds will disappear due to crypto’s consistent price drops.

Several have expressed that they would be less worried if virtual assets were tied to fiat currencies like the U.S. dollar, making them stablecoins. The trouble is that such currencies require a reserve ledger built for fully decentralized assets that can provide value substantiation and transparency.

PwC is seeking to provide education to both investors and startups alike that discusses how this technology can advance. In addition, PwC will offer insight on factors ranging from security and risk management to governance and control to potentially improve upon present industry practices.

Schatt is confident further development of stablecoins will increase the level of transparency in the crypto market and boost the economy by getting more mainstream investors involved.

“If you can get a stablecoin that’s very transparent and tied to USD, for example, that’s a very powerful confidence booster,” he states. “Imagine, also, that you can get out of a rapidly depreciating currency and get into something that’s giving you a return on your money between two and five percent. That’s truly powerful.”

Cred is also a founding member of the Universal Protocol (UP) Alliance. Supporters of the organization include Blockchain at Berkley and Brave, whose CEO Brendan Eich recently penned a letter to a U.S. Senate committee asking that GDPR-like standards be implemented in the United States.

The Alliance presently serves as a major platform for the creation, management and distribution of stablecoins, and works to push mass adoption by introducing new kinds of safeguards that make virtual currencies more convenient and practical. These tactics include inheritability, private key recovery and even loss assurance.

Schatt says that lending in crypto is precisely what allows Cred to garner so many funds for its clients. Several traditional lenders enforce long and complicated processes when acquiring money for customers. In addition, factors like interest rates are always going to differ depending on the fiat currency being issued and the individual terms of the lender.

He explains, however, that while credit and background checks are inevitable, Cred’s procedure for securing capital is simpler in that cryptocurrencies possess the same properties no matter where you are. Thus, the interest rates for Cred’s loans do not change, and people have more opportunity to secure their money and pay it back with ease.

“If you own a home, you have to value it in all kinds of different ways, but bitcoin has the same properties no matter what, so we can potentially offer the same level of interest to all customers,” he assures.

Bitcoin Magazine also reached out to PwC for comment, but did not receive a response.

Why Should You Choose Dagcoin over Bitcoin      Cache   Translate Page
Undoubtedly, Bitcoin is the most popular cryptocurrency out there and holds the biggest percentage of the global cryptocurrency market under its hood. But, lately, bitcoin is facing issues in terms of speed as well as a transaction cost. Transaction speed, in the case of bitcoin, is rapidly decreasing and a user, sometimes, has to wait for hours to get the transaction confirmed.
Key-Insulated and Privacy-Preserving Signature Scheme with Publicly Derived Public Key, by Zhen Liu and Guomin Yang and Duncan S. Wong and Khoa Nguyen and Huaxiong Wang      Cache   Translate Page
Since the introduction of Bitcoin in 2008, cryptocurrency has been undergoing a quick and explosive development. At the same time, privacy protection, one of the key merits of cryptocurrency, has attracted much attention by the community. In this paper, we identify a security vulnerability of the privacy-preserving key derivation algorithm of Monero, which is one of the most popular privacy-centric cryptocurrencies. To provide a formal treatment for the problem, we introduce and formalize a new signature variant, called Key-Insulated and Privacy-Preserving Signature Scheme with Publicly Derived Public Key (PDPKS), which forms a convenient and robust cryptographic tool for building privacy-preserving cryptocurrencies. Specifically, PDPKS allows anyone to derive new signature verification keys for a user, say Alice, based on her long-term public-key, while only Alice can derive the signing keys corresponding to those verification keys. In terms of privacy, given a derived verification key and valid signatures with respect to it, an adversary is not able to link them to the underlying long-term public key; and given two verification keys and corresponding valid signatures, an adversary cannot tell whether the verification keys are derived from the same long-term public key. A distinguishing security feature of PDPKS, with the above functionality and privacy features, is that the derived keys are independent/insulated from each other, namely, compromising the signing key associated with a verification key does not allow an adversary to forge a valid signature for another verification key, even if both verification keys are derived from the same long-term public key. We formalize the notion of PDPKS and propose a practical and proven secure construction, which fixes the identified security vulnerability in Monero and provides a more robust solution for implementing the so-called stealth addresses for cryptocurrencies. Also, our PDPKS scheme can be used to fix the similar vulnerability in the deterministic wallet algorithm for Bitcoin.
China is capable of destabilizing or destroying Bitcoin, new research suggests      Cache   Translate Page
TwitterFacebook

In 2008, Bitcoin was envisioned by its pseudonymous founder Satoshi Nakamoto as a trustless, decentralized peer-to-peer electronic cash system.

Ten years and numerous crazy price jumps later, Bitcoin appears to have withstood the test of time. But is it really decentralized and thus resilient to attacks?

A new paper, signed by researchers from from Princeton University and Florida International University, suggests that Bitcoin is largely at the whim of one powerful entity: China.

SEE ALSO: Cryptocurrency exchange claimed it was 'practically impossible' to hack. It was hacked.

The paper (found via The Next Web), which hasn't been peer reviewed yet, outlines numerous potential attacks and disruptions China could launch against Bitcoin. It also argues that China has both the means and motivation to potentially launch such attacks, and that it is already influencing the network in some ways.  Read more...

The International Monetary Fund has predicted that inflation in the country will reach 1 million percent. While the official website and wallet for the Petro appear to have launched and be fully operational, and it appears to be presently trading in various cryptocurrency exchanges, United States persons (including even foreigners temporarily visiting the United States) should be extremely wary of trading or investing in the Petro.

OUR VISION

IPB Image

The cryptocurrency world has changed the way we think about crowdfunding and early-stage investment. Just a few years ago, startup funding involved rigorous screening processes by venture capitalists; today, companies raise tens of millions of dollars with barely more than a whitepaper.

SCC platform is a new and unique crowdfunding platform based entirely on the Blockchain and designed to facilitate open, honest investment. It's a great time to raise money, but for investors this comes with increased risk. The regulation-free environment of token sales means that in the event of a mismanagement of funds, early investors have few legal options to turn to in order to recover funds or influence a company's business strategy.

That's why SmartContractChain is building a platform that will harness the best of both worlds, providing entrepreneurs and creatives with access to funds, while guaranteeing the security of investors' money.

SmartContractChain will leverage not only the power of cryptocurrency for rapid fund distribution, but also tap into the logical and provably transparent nature of smart contracts to ensure that dividends are assigned to investors in an auditable, immutable manner, all delivered across the stable and scalable Ethereum blockchain.

Things To Be Aware Of

Each participant in any project has the visibility they need to feel safe about each project SCC platform is designed to help companies, projects, and entrepreneurs leverage latest coin tools and activities. It is designed to support multiple funding options and opportunities so project owners can reward investors in various ways.

Japanese Internet Monolith GMO to Launch Yen-Pegged Stablecoin      Cache   Translate Page
GMO stablecoin

GMO Internet Group is working to launch a stablecoin by 2019. In an announcement released on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, the Japanese IT conglomerate said it is putting all gears in place to begin building its stablecoin, called the GMO Japanese Yen (GJY).

Banking on success on its home turf, GJY will look to penetrate the Asian market via Z.com once the fiscal year of 2019 is in full swing. GMO launched Z.com as a cryptocurrency exchange subsidiary in its relentless bid to penetrate the cryptocurrency industry.

The company made headlines in December of 2017 when it announced that it would open up a salary option that allowed employees to earn half of their pay in bitcoin.

The news signals the entry of another potential player in the yen-pegged stablecoin market, which already includes Hong Kong’s Grandshores Technology Group.

For a company that already has a foothold in the crypto exchange and mining business, launching a stablecoin, which offers price stability, would help it support “borderless cryptocurrency transactions.” Among efforts to expand its scope of operation, the company also partnered with Aozora Bank Group and others to launch a blockchain-powered online bank.

The web bank is expected to provide a portal that leverages blockchain technology for making cross-border settlements. GMO is also keen on bridging the gap of international remittances via its financial corporations in Japan.

“We have banks and trust licenses in Japan, so we will issue (GJY) in Asia, but we can store assets in Japan as well,” GMO founder and president Masatoshi Kumagai noted in the release.

Kumagai also believes the company is headed in the right direction to avoid the issues associated with tether. He went further to state:

“If that happens, everyone will not be worried like with tether; it can be said that GMO has a bank there and keeps fiat there.”

GMO joins a long list of companies to have issued stablecoins in recent months. Back in July, IBM revealed it had collaborated with Stronghold and the Stellar protocol on a U.S. dollar–pegged stablecoin. In the same vein, crypto exchange Gemini, blockchain startup Paxos and crypto payments firm Circle all announced their U.S dollar–anchored stablecoins earlier this year.

In this episode of the Keiser Report, Max and Stacy examine President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana’s assertion that China’s investments in Africa are not colonialism. At the UN, the president noted that he sees leaders of other nations lining up to visit China in order to receive similar investments and that the infrastructure and jobs they are providing are needed. They also look at some research which finds that China’s ‘no strings attached’ aid may actually be better than the Western approach. In the second half, Max interviews Steve Beauregard of Bloq.com about the state of cryptocurrency markets today - from ICO booms and busts to building out the next stage of the growth in the industry. They also discuss why AirBnB being allowed to offer equity in the platform to Superhosts such as himself could be a good thing.

Trading recommendations:

According to the H1 time - frame, I found that price did fake breakout of the support ($6.361), which is a sign that sellers got trapped. I also found potential end of the downward correction (abc flat), which is another sign of strength. My advice is to watch for potential buying opportunties on the dips. The upward take profit levels are set at the price of $6.616 and at the price of $6.748.

Support/Resistance

$6.456 – Intraday resistance

$6.349– Intraday support

$6.616 – Objective target 1

$6.748 – Objective target 2

According to today's, the Japanese online conglomerate GMO Internet Co. Ltd confirmed plans to issue a cryptographic stablecoin associated with the Japanese yen. GMO, which entered the Japanese cryptocurrency market in May last year, intends to start issuing tokens, called GMO Japanese Yen (GJY), in the financial year 2019. This message draws another potential player on the stablecoin market, in addition, several other corporations signal that they intend to launch their own assets. GMO confirmed that the main incentive to make this decision was to reach international remittances: "We have banks and licenses in Japan, so we will spend (GJY) in Asia, but we can also store assets in Japan. If that happens, no one will be worried about Tether; it can be said that GMO has a bank there, in which it keeps fiat currencies" - said the founder and president of GMO Masatoshi Kumagai.

The GMO Internet also noted that with GJY it is highly likely that it is an ideal currency that combines high creditworthiness, low fees and speed of communication. By issuing a currency based on yen, GMO Internet will continue to support credible transactions without borders.

Kumagai added that GMOs will try to get GJY listing on many international exchanges.

Let's now take a look at the Bitcoin technical picture at the H4 time frame. After reaching the technical resistance zone the market has consolidated for some time and then dropped suddenly to hit the technical support at the level of $6,358. Currently, the price is bouncing towards the local resistance at the level of $6,455, but overall the move down looks strong. To confirm the downtrend is resuming, the market would have to break below the level of $6,056 and for now, it is far from it.

Lempres further added that the talks of obtaining a license are “going well” with the Financial Services Authority (FSA), and they are expecting the license by next year. “We are… committed to getting it done. In late August, messaging giant LINE launched its own proprietary blockchain, the LINK chain, and its own cryptocurrency, the LINK token. While LINE is the first publicly traded company to have launched its own blockchain mainnet, it isn’t the first social media network to embrace cryptocurrencies. In this regard, it is joining the ranks of Kik, Kakao, Telegram, and (possibly) Facebook. All these companies have shown interest in adding cryptocurrency support on their networks, and some of them have already taken major steps. This all begs the question: At a time where cryptocurrencies are facing a major slump and there’s a lot of…

Top Trends in Mobile Casino Gaming Apps      Cache   Translate Page
Mobile gambling represents the modernity of the entertainment industry. People want to play online using the most convenient solutions with the atmosphere of land-based casinos, and the market of apps grows from year to year. Now, let’s dive into the critical trends of gaming on the go!

1. Live Dealers

The ideal casino for new gamblers is probably a mobile application with conveniences of a land-based facility. Software providers work in this area, and live dealers emerged as one of the solutions to bring the real-life experience to online gaming.

Simply put, a live casino is a stream from a particular broadcasting studio with real croupiers and tables. Players can join the translation and make bets using the virtual interface. Modern technologies allow creating high-quality streams not for desktops only but also for smartphones and tablets. The most popular live dealer's games are blackjack, baccarat, roulette, and poker. Though not every live casino features a mobile version, it is a trend that is soon to be commonplace.

2. Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

The increasing popularity of VR and AR is definitely a trend that represents the gamers’ interest in having a mind-blowing experience, the more graphics, the better. While augmented reality has a wider adoption in games and professional apps, virtual reality is welcomed by gamblers.

Giants from the IT world like Google, Samsung, Sony, and HTC are working on various VR solutions. But for now, only a few casinos support such level of immersion. We should wait a bit longer to see virtual casinos identical to real ones on their level of sounds, lights, moves, etc.

Among others, HTC Vive is a leader in the VR industry for gamblers, not least due to the cooperation with IGT.

3. Progressive Web Apps and Cloud-Based Apps

Let’s go deeper into the topic of gambling experience. While live dealers and virtual reality solutions represent the high level of immersion, certain types of innovations define the high degree of convenience. The most recent idea of UI/UX improvement is progressive web apps or PWAs.

These projects combine the best from native applications and web-based pages. PWAs exist like simple websites but can be installed on the smartphone or tablet to offer a safer and faster experience. Cloud games are similar. They are located on cloud servers and can be shared on numerous devices without installation. This way, gamblers can save free space on their devices. But still, these projects are a bit unusual and not that much adopted by gambling.

Take a closer look at these project: Google Developers that was the first to introduce progressive web apps; PWAStore that contains different apps, including casinos; IGT that is a leader in cloud-based gambling innovations.

4. Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies

Probably, this trend is the most notable right now. With the outstanding hype around digital coins and various blockchain-based projects, the gambling industry has realized that it can benefit from implementing these things.

Blockchain systems allow online casinos to provide more transparent and safe experience. Users can use their private crypto wallets without depositing fiat money. In blockchain casinos, gamblers are able to check results of RNGs and be sure about the legit house edge. Additionally, blockchain and cryptocurrencies eliminate governmental monitoring, making gambling entirely anonymous. Overall, that’s a win-win scenario for gamblers and casinos.

Various blockchain-powered gambling projects are listed, for example, on CryptoSlate.

5. Social Gambling

Ultimately, there are two types of gambling. One is based on real money bets and is considered traditional. Another one is called social gambling. It allows players to bet using system tokens which have no value in the real world. For social gamers, the fact of betting and communicating with other users is more significant than possible earnings. Surely, such people can gamble for real money, but they apparently prefer social projects. According to several reports, the number of social gamers has increased in recent years.

There are hundreds of social casinos online. If you need in-depth stats, check Technavio.

Gamblers Are Switching to Mobile Apps

To get the phenomenon of mobile gambling, it’s better to start with the online market in general. According to the Technavio research conducted in 2016, the industry is rising rapidly, not least due to the continuing legalisation – 85 countries allow their residents to gamble online. The same report claims that the total value of the industry will be more than $60 billion by 2020.

Moving to mobile gambling individually, surveys show that users switch to smartphones and tablets from desktop versions more often. By several reports issued by the UK Gambling Commission, we can track the evolution of the market. In 2016, 43% of bets were placed using mobiles. In 2017, this number increased to 51%. We can say that gambling on the go becomes more popular all over the world. You can also check information from Google which started its mobile-first indexing initiative in 2016.

The conclusion is clear: software providers should focus on developing solutions for mobile platforms compatible with all devices.

Comment on Technology & regulation: How to avoid another ponzi scheme by Prosper Njoku      Cache   Translate Page
I honestly think the word 'Ponzi' can be found everywhere if you look at it holistically. The problem here is the bad foundation that's been laid by our moral lifestyle, level of education/judgement, ignorance and a junk of irresponsibility from our government, plus the unconscious negative agreements from media agencies through which people are ensnared into very fraudulent schemes. For one, it's a game by same people against same people and for same set of people. In Ponzi game no one [both investor(s) and the owner(s)] is/are innocent. What I don't buy is the mentioning of a particular name, the article would have been best without name or a touch of few schemes - there were varying Ponzi schemes before MMM- but after MMM, thousands of its leaders and guiders started their own Ponzi and people fell for it. There are still a handful of them operating in different forms, some as bitcoin mining, cryptocurrency investment, agricultural investment schemes, etc. Good analysis though. Thanks.

Bitcoin freefall: signs of the end      Cache   Translate Page

Bitcoin transactions are falling and expected to slide further from the latter half of next year.

This is the assessment from Juniper Research’s study, The Future of Cryptocurrency: Bitcoin & Altcoin Trends & Challenges 2018-2023, which estimated that daily transaction volumes have fallen from an average of around 360,000 per day in late 2017 to just 230,000 in September 2018. Daily transaction values were down from more than $3.7 billion to less than $670 million in the same period.

Juniper said Bitcoin has not only fallen sharply from its December 2017 peak but has failed to recover despite the weakness of a number of leading fiat currencies, continuing uncertainty around Brexit outcomes and ongoing trade disputes between the US, China and the EU. The study claims that if Bitcoin cannot make gains in such favorable circumstances, then it is unlikely to prosper as and when these issues are resolved.

The report also pointed out that not only were national and state governments imposing additional restrictions on (and conducting criminal investigations into) cryptocurrency exchanges, but that visibility and reach had been severely curtailed by advertising bans introduced by leading social media companies, including Google and Twitter.

It claimed that the ability of casual investors to buy Bitcoin had been significantly reduced by the decision of many financial institutions to prevent purchases via credit cards.

What future?

The study also cast doubts on the longer term prospects for Bitcoin, due both to closer regulatory scrutiny and, ultimately, the rationale behind its valuation. According to report author Dr Windsor Holden, “Bitcoin has no intrinsic value. Like any asset, it is worth whatever someone is prepared to pay for it, but it has no meaning or existence beyond the confines of the ledger. It is a bubble, and there is a strong possibility that this bubble could burst in the near future.”

This all begs the question: At a time where cryptocurrencies are facing a major slump and there’s a lot of…

Wow!!!!! How negative can you make it sound? Do you Dan Gerard even own a single token or crypto??????? Terms like Ransomware, Unfortunate,Negative Connotation,Appealing to Criminals, all within the first two paragraphs of this article!!!!! Most readers will stop reading by the second paragraph and not waste time with more negative news. They are not interested unless they already own cryptos. They have enough to deal with just paying their electric bills and paying a car off. I believe the almighty Dollar is more connected to crime and criminal banking systems. One powerful thing for the electric companies though, you need electricity to run your computer or charge your phone to use cryptocurrency. Of course this is my opinion and everyone has one. Thanks

Can Lawyers Ethically Accept Cryptocurrency?      Cache   Translate Page
QUESTION: Several years back we added credit card billing to our options for client bill payment, including through an online secured platform. Our bill collection rates dramatically increased along with how fast a bill was paid with emailed invoices. It was great! We recently saw some companies accepting bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as payment for goods and services. While we don’t expect a high volume of clients to pay with this new “currency,” we are thinking about offering it as an option. If nothing else, it shows we are keeping ahead of the curve on modern trends. Should we be pumping the brakes, or do we have the green light to accept cryptocurrency as payment? ANSWER: At first glance, it may seem like you would be in the clear to accept alternative payments for the legal services rendered. Why not, since you can accept nonmonetary items such as a goat for preparing a family’s estate planning documents, so long as the goat was reasonable…

Cryptocurrency theft hits nearly $1bn in first nine months: report      Cache   Translate Page

Theft of cryptocurrencies through hacking of exchanges and trading platforms soared to $927 million in the first nine months of the year, up nearly 250 per cent from the level seen in 2017, according to a report from US-based cyber security firm CipherTrace released on Wednesday. The report, which looks at criminal activity and money-laundering in the digital currency market, also showed a steadily growing number of smaller thefts in the $20-60 million range, totalling $173 million in the third quarter. Digital currencies stolen from exchanges in 2017 totalled just $266 million, according to a previous report from CipherTrace. Bitcoin's popularity and the emergence of more than 1,600 other digital coins or tokens have drawn more hackers into the cryptocurrency space, expanding opportunities for crime and fraud. "The regulators are still a couple of years behind because there are only a few countries that have really applied strong anti-money laundering laws," Dave Jevans, chief executive officer of CipherTrace, told Reuters in an interview. Jevans is also the chairman of the Anti-Phishing Working Group, a global organisation that aims to help solve cyber crime.  He said there...
