A Small Spark of Hope for Democracy in the Indian Ocean      Cache   Translate Page

From the genocide of the Rohingya, to the violent crackdown on peaceful protesters in Nicaragua, to the surprising success of right-wing populism in Brazil, to the increasingly virulent strains of isolationist nationalism that have been taking root in eastern Europe, it’s a grim time for democracy around the world. But an unexpected source of hope has emerged from the Maldives, an island nation known for little more than its idyllic beaches and long history of authoritarian rule.

Since 2013, the reign of President Abdulla Yameen brought mass abuses of human rights to the Maldives: the jailing or exiling of opposition leaders, increased control over state institutions, withdrawal from Commonwealth, and widespread corruption are only the tip of the iceberg for the small, tropical country.

But on Sept. 23, over 90 percent of Maldivians voted in the first general elections since Yameen came to power five years ago—and voted overwhelmingly for the opposition, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih of the Maldivian Democratic Party, who won after receiving 58 percent of the votes.

But while a celebration is in order, it’s worth remembering that the Maldives has been here before. When two of us first came to work with Maldivians in 2006, we were impressed by the brave and committed Maldivian people, who acted time and time again with courage and talent to defend democracy within their country. And though both of us spent more than a decade with brave Serbian activists fighting the Slobodan Milosevic regime, and years after that training and educating democracy defenders from Kiev, Ukraine, and Tbilisi, Georgia, to Caracas, Venezuela, and Harare, Zimbabwe, through our organization, CANVAS. we could see immediately that Maldivian activists are unique in so many ways.

In 2008, after a 30-year-long period of dictatorship under Maumoon Abdul Gayoom—whose iron-hand rule of the island nation was characterized by a low tolerance for protests and any vocal opposition combined with a high appetite for nepotism and corruption—overwhelming popular support brought “Anni”—the popular nickname for former journalist Mohamed Nasheed—to power as the Maldives’ first democratically elected president. Anni was successful for the first three years of his presidency as he worked to combat radical Islam and mobilize the tiny island nation to become a leading global voice in the fight against climate change. But his term ended prematurely after three years when, after a coup led by parts of the judiciary and the military, Nasheed resigned after reportedly being held at gunpoint.

Key foreign powers quickly signed on to the new regime’s interpretation that this was a voluntary resignation; the governments of Britain, the United States, and India quickly recognized the new government as valid. However, Nasheed and his followers asserted that a coup had taken place and that he had been forced to resign at gunpoint. The Commonwealth met and concluded that an international investigation needed to take place, but no further action was taken to investigate the constitutionality of the regime change from an international perspective.

Just a day after the regime change took place, Nasheed penned an op-ed for the New York Times detailing his attempts to reform the entire governmental system of the Maldives and the struggles that he faced attempting to do so. He writes, “The dictator can be removed in a day, but it can take years to stamp out the lingering remnants of his dictatorship.” His words proved prophetic. At the next general elections in 2013, Abdulla Yameen (the half-brother of former dictator Gayoom) was elected, and the Maldives returned to old habits. Under Yameen, government funds were embezzled, peaceful protests were suppressed, independent media outlets were shut down, and political prisoners were jailed. Now it seems that the collective international community has finally exhaled in relief. The Maldives may, in fact, have a democratic transition of power. Yameen’s regime is finally over.

Recent history has shown that we cannot allow this positive development to cloud our judgment and lull us into a false sense of security. About 90 percent of the Maldives’ population voted in this year’s elections, showing an unprecedented amount of engagement in Maldivian democracy. The international community owes it to Maldivian citizens to keep watch and ensure a democratic transition of power occurs in November, and furthermore aid the new government in ensuring it can implement positive changes to ensure the longevity of the country’s democracy.

It is especially imperative that we pay close attention to the Maldives in the wake of this election, taking into account the lessons that we have learned through the forced resignation of Nasheed. The Maldives is a relatively small nation, and the apathy of the international community toward the continuation of its democracy not only hurts the country but has a negative impact on the entire world. Had it continued along its path as a democracy last time, thrusting itself into the spotlight as the first Muslim-majority country with peaceful transitions of power within its democratic institutions, and had the world not ignored this tiny island nation, the Maldives might have brought its institutions, expertise, and goodwill toward other countries in the region, maybe even setting the example, case study, and inspiration, and thus radically changing the context through which the Arab Spring occurred only three years after Nasheed`s victory in 2008.

Major media outlets have focused most of their attention on the geopolitical impact of this change, especially the fact that Yameen had been turning a country closer to China, while Solih’s MDP has always advocated for closer ties to the most populous democracy, India. But there is another very important arena in which the smallest Asian country can affect not only the region, but the world—the struggle for democracy.

The world should recognize Solih’s presidency as a beacon of light for other Muslim countries that have experienced similar issues in transitioning to power. Instead of ignoring the potential of the Maldives, we need to instead do our best to nurture Maldivian democracy until it is able to fully bloom—and this means that the international community must do its best to push the Maldives toward a few key changes. At least two avenues of reform are clear: fixing the judiciary and building a muscle of the civil society.

Amnesty International has regularly called for the reform of the Maldives’ infamously corrupt judiciary. The courts have been used by the government to crush the opposition—most notably in the trial of Nasheed shortly after he was forced out of the presidency. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison for terrorism charges and denied access to a lawyer by two judges who had already served as witnesses against him during the investigation phase. In this case, the Maldives needs critical outside aid in order to form an educated, experienced, and corruption-free set of judges.

Second, and even more important, is to empower and support another backbone of vivid democracy: Maldivian civil society. The issue in the Maldives is not that people are unwilling to engage with democracy—they have proven their commitment twice in the past decade by voting in numbers unimaginable for Western democracies. But the international community can help, guide, equip, and train already mobilized Maldivian citizens into a solid and lasting civic power that will make any further efforts to hijack democracy in Maldives impossible.

The new hope for world democracy may be rising in Maldives. This time, democracy lovers of this world must not miss the importance of helping it.

The Kalimba Is The Most Soothing And Relaxing Instrument We Have Ever Heard

The kalimba is a musical instrument from Africa, which belongs to the family of lamellophones. Based on its appearance it seems to date back from 1000 BC. That would involve models with bamboo reeds.

Kalimba's most common names are sanza, likembé, thumb piano. Its cradle is basically the central and southern Africa, but it's also seen in the south of the continent. A kalimba is also discovered in South America and the Caribbean, where slaves imported it (see marimbula of Cuba).

The instrument, called likembé in this case, used to be the basis to support the Zairian rumba in the 1950s. See Antoine Moundanda, Papa Kourand and more recently the brothers Makouaya. *In Zimbabwe, the traditional M’bira is an instrument of mystic trance, used to contact the dead ancestors (see Shona Music *).

That's also the instrument of night watchmen and storytellers and used for walking from village to village.

It's said in Bantu mythology that God created the minerals, plants, and animals, playing the thumb piano, and all living beings lived together in perfect harmony. Then one day, His instrument being detuned, unluckily, when He played, sprang a false note which gave birth to man.

Then, the man multiplied and perpetuated the disharmony which was his origin. It seems that perhaps we have to bring some harmony to this troubled world, and the kalimba can help us!

[Bangladesh], Oct 9 (ANI): An injury to the left finger of Bangladesh's regular Test and Twenty20 skipper, Shakib Al Hasan has left the cricket board concerned ahead of a home series against Zimbabwe and the Windies.

The injury that the all-rounder suffered in January, aggravated during the Asia Cup 2018 last month. He will be out of action for three months and with series taking place this month, his deputy Mahamudullah said that he is capable of leading his side in absence of Shakib. "I have always liked captaincy as it's a challenging job and at the same time it's a huge honour," Mahmudullah said, as quoted by the International Cricket Council. "I have always looked forward to it, and if I get such an opportunity, I am ready for it."

Zimbabwe will tour first, in October-November, followed by the men from the Caribbean in November-December.

Shakib was ruled out of the home series against Sri Lanka in January and did not play in early matches of the Nidahas T20 Trophy in March. Mahmudullah had led Bangladesh in Sri Lanka and in two T20Is at home against the visiting Sri Lankans.

Bangladesh's injury woes have a long list as it includes their swashbuckling opener Tamim Iqbal, who fractured his left wrist during his side's Asia Cup opener against Sri Lanka. Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim is also rehabilitating from a rib injury. (ANI)

I have had an opportunity to work in Kasana in Botswana with a regional office in Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) and I travelled between the 2 towns regulalrly.

I found Victoria Falls to more outgoing and the guys were more switched-on in-terms of Gay sex. They understood the language of gay and never made a big fuss about being asked out for sex. Kasane on the other hand was a very different and reserved town with everybody pretenting they had no clue what happens when 2 men get into bed.

It did however take a few dollars to get a guy to bed and few did manage to run-off before they gave me their ass. I ended up with a guy who was not gay but always knew who I should talk to and I paid him a small fee if the sex went well and a bit more it the sex was GOOD!!! Very few of these guys were really gay so they really just wanted the money and I really just wanted the sex. A few did show some affection and joy in the act and it's those where I always came back to.

Comment... Absolutely.Well put.Last year they have a habit of buying new cars then after a few years selling them to themselves at a ridiculous book price and buying more new cars for themselves again.Ministers,Deputy Ministers,Judges , Parliamentarians, Permanent Secretaries ,Directors etc. The urban populace will bear the brunt of these painful measures while the government will take the bulk of the money and give it to Sakunda to go into the black market to buy agricultural outputs for the rural folk under a Command Agriculture scheme which is not budgeted and whose repayment figures are not tabled in Parliament. While ED tell us Zimbabwe is open for business we see that Army has mining companies which are grabbing chrome claims from Zimasco,Zimalloys,Rio Tinting and individuals. How does this help restore investor confidence? The army was in partnership with Anjin in Marange.Does anyone know how much it earned? Does the Army pay taxes on revenues earned? Why does the Army become involved in business? Don't they get a budget allocation.

Also consider re-looking at perks being paid to senior civil servants, eg fuel allowances, domestic worker allowances, cell phone allowances and salaries themselves. I personally do not think it is rationale pay a Commissioner to an independent Commission a salary of over $ 5000 on top of a host of allowances from a broke government like ours. These officials are earning more than what is being earned by private sector executives. They are driving Government cars that are more expensive than their private sector counter parts, yet Government is a non profit making enterprise. Pse consider rationalising all such issues among others and Zimbabwe will economically become a bread basket of Africa and beyond.

World's Most Powerful Passport Revealed As Countries' Global Rankings Shift      Cache   Translate Page
Japan passport holders will find it easier than ever to travel the world, as their travel documents have just moved up in the global Henley Passport Index to take the top spot.

The Henley Passport Index is a ranking of all of the passports in the world based on the number of countries their holders can travel to visa-free.

Until now Japan had been sharing joint first place with Singapore, which gained visa-free access to Uzbekistan earlier this year bringing its total to 189 countries.

However, earlier this month Japan gained visa-free access to Myanmar bringing its total to 190 - once again taking it to the top spot.

It's still a milestone for both Japan and Singapore, as 2018 is the first year in the index's 13-year history that either of them has had the most powerful passport in the world.
Both are way ahead of the UK and US which share fifth place with Portugal, the Netherlands, Austria and Luxembourg - but it's worth noting that the top four spots are shared by 10 countries.

Experts had previously revealed that the UK ranking is unlikely to increase until there is certainty regarding Brexit.

Zimbabwe's Dingy Trains Mirror Economic Decline      Cache   Translate Page
Dark, dirty and slow, Zimbabwe's trains, like much else in the impoverished southern African country, have seen better days. Once the preferred mode of transport for most Zimbabweans, the state-run rail service mirrors the decline in the country's economic fortunes during the last two decades under the leadership of former President Robert Mugabe. Gilbert Mthinzima Ndlovu, a veteran of Zimbabwe's 1970s independence war and a security guard at the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) for 35 years, yearns for the old days when trains were full and arrived on time. "Times are different now as we have few passengers," the off-duty Ndlovu told Reuters as he rested in a badly lit first class cabin during the journey from the capital Harare to his home in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second city. Now the 10-hour journey can take 16 hours, he said. Not surprising, then, that many Zimbabweans prefer to make the 440 km (273 mile) journey by bus or public taxi in around five hours than have to endure a cold overnight train ride - even if at $10 the train ride costs only half as much. The train carriages often lack lighting and water, and the toilets are filthy. The signalling and information systems are often vandalized and some tracks overgrown with grass and weeds because they have not been used in years. NRZ is now trying to improve its fortunes. Last year South African logistics group Transnet won a $400 million joint bid to recapitalize NRZ and fix some of the problems, including acquiring and refurbishing carriages. But for now passengers have to make do with a broken train service. "Today you can't even buy food from the train and all the coaches are filthy, with no water and the lights are not working," said one passenger who declined to give his name.

Lovely Victoria Falls...      Cache   Translate Page

Bilal Asif Rises to the Occasion      Cache   Translate Page
I don't know a single person who was not surprised by seeing Bilal Asif's name in the Pakistan squad for the test series against Australia. Everyone wondered why he was the only off spinner in the squad and asked where were all the other off spinners.

I was quite sure that Bilal Asif will not play a single game and that thought became even more certain when Pakistan called up Mohammad Hafeez to join the squad.

But then, Shadab did not recover from his injury and on the eve of the first test against Australia, Sarfraz announced that Bilal Asif will play.

I read someone's social media post that said that this was Pakistan's weakest bowling attack ever. Even I was skeptical about the support for Abbas and Yasir, so I did not even bother to refute that statement.

And then on day 3 of the first test, Bilal Asif surprised not only Australia but all of Pakistan too!

Bilal Asif's magic made the Aussies fold like a pack of cards as they lost 10 wickets, 6 of them to Asif, for 60 runs in 30 odd overs resulting in one of the worst ever collapses in Australia's test history.

Asif's 6-36 is the third best bowling figures in an innings by a Pakistani debutant and the second best by a Pakistani debutant off spinner.

Look at that average, economy, and strike rate. Never has a Pakistani debutant dominated the way Bilal Asif did.

Pakistanis love to create the unexpected, don't they? I don't know any other team that dismisses the fans' expectations, both good and bad, like Pakistan does!

Asif's figures are not only one of the best ever for a Pakistani debutant, but they are one of the best among all off spinners on debut.

Fourth best to be exact, but again no debutant has done it as economically or as destructively as Asif did against Australia.

And that holds true among all bowlers that have made their test debut against Australia.

No one has produced as a good a spell as Asif's 6-36 on debut against Australia.

It is not surprising that no one considered Asif to be test material before the series started. He doesn't have a first class record that showcases abundant talent, nor does he have domestic performance that have startled, yet the Pakistan selectors and the team management saw something in him.

That something paid off yesterday.

Fortunately, Shadab Khan was not fit for this test, because if he was then I doubt Asif would have ever gotten a chance. And the way Pakistan's other leg spinner went in the first innings, wicketless, Pakistan may not have been in the position they are in now had Asif not been in the XI.

So thank you Inzamam, thank you Sarfraz and Mickey, and thank you Shadab for letting us witness the heroics of Bilal Asif.

Asif addressed the media at the end of day 3 and you can watch the video on our Facebook page. Here is a transcript of what he had to say:

"Being a professional cricketer, you need to be strong from within. When I was not getting my big break, I kept on working hard. I believe, one can obnly work hard, success is in the hands of Allah. I kept on working hard, 2015 is when I last played for Pakistan (ODIs v Zimbabwe). In the last three years I attended camps at the National cricket academy. I want to mention Mushtaq Ahmed here. I want to thank him for teaching me a lot. Today, I reaped rewards for all the hard work he put in. The credit of today's performance goes to Mushi Bhai (Mushtaq). He has been my biggest support"

"No I wasn't bothered about that (my action was called in the ODIS in Zimbabwe in 2015). That's a thing of the past. I concentrated on my bowling performance today. Thank God I did well."

"I wasn't sure I was going to play the game beforehand. I only realized when the final XI was announced. Well they had announced the 12, a day before the Test, so I had an idea but wasn't sure. Whenever I am in the squad I keep my confidence level high. I was always ready to grab my opportunity with both hands."

"I have been bowling for a while, in first class and ODIs (List A). I had an idea of how to bowl on this pitch. The conditions here are conducive for spin. I tried to vary my pace. Thankfully, I achieved the desired results."

"This is a team game. Yasir Shah and Hafeez are world-class bowlers, drawing comparisons is unfair. To say that they aren't good because they were wicket-less today doesn't make sense. It was my day today. I was lucky. I took time to get my rhythm going. I didn't find success in the first session. There was a bit of pressure but I refocused in the afternoon and thankfully was successful."

Chuck Schmidt Led Accomplished, Active Life      Cache   Translate Page

Charles (Chuck) Wilson Schmidt died Tuesday Sept. 25 at his home in West Tisbury. He was 90.

Chuck was a force of nature, inhaling life fully. He was extremely active, competitive, caring and devoted to improving himself and whatever he worked on. His successful father and older siblings inspired him to excel at everything he did.

Educated at Deerfield Academy, he went on to Williams College where he majored in chemistry, played baseball, squash and hockey, was a cheerleader and head of the Christian Association. His teasing friends voted him not Most Handsome, rather Thinks He Is.

In 1948 he joined S.D. Warren paper company, telling his father he liked trees. He loved the paper business because of the full cycle from sustainable forests to paper to printing to beautiful books and art. He worked with a unique and wonderful set of colleagues. He started as an apprentice in the mill, then went on to sales, and finally became president. He was promoted the same day that his classmates at the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program chose him as their president.

After 33 years at S.D Warren, he was hired as president of SCA Services, the third largest waste management company in the U.S. Next he became Babson College’s first executive in residence and full professor, lecturing on the mission of management. Babson honored him with a doctorate. He finished his business career as head of the appliance division of Raytheon.

Chuck was a motivator and mentor for family, friends, business associates and nonprofits for which he worked. He could be tough, but it was tough love. He endowed scholarships at Williams College and the University of Maine, Orono. He was a great public speaker. He was full of quotes. One of his favorites is inscribed on stone pillars at Williams College: “Climb high, climb far, your goal the sky, your aim the star.”

He served on nine corporate boards including The Boston Company, Mass Financial Services, The New England Deaconess and Mohawk Paper. On the nonprofit side, he served on the corporation of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the national board of the Smithsonian, A Better Chance and others. He supported many local causes including donating the cow weathervane atop the West Tisbury Agricultural Hall.

Chuck loved the outdoors, the environment and environmental causes. When President of S.D Warren, the company received more environmental awards than any other paper company. On Martha’s Vineyard in 1975, serving as president of the Seven Gates Farm Corporation and working with the board, he was instrumental in bringing in the Trustees of Reservations to preserve 1,100 acres of ponds, fields, woodland and wetland, including two miles of shoreline. He supported friends in Maine on the International Appalachian Trail extension into northern Maine, Canada and across to Europe.

Upon retiring, he changed his business card to Chuck Schmidt — Sport. The family counted 17 sports that he had played. His highest level was as a semi-professional ice-hockey player. He had a passion for fly fishing. He was a lover of poetry, photography, motorcycles, animals, Volkswagens, books, singing, playing the harmonica and decoys, to name a few.

As always, there were Chuck’s many adventures. Bungee jumping in New Zealand (at age 75!), a transatlantic race from Newport to Cork Ireland, sailing in Croatia and the Caribbean, safari in Botswana and Zimbabwe, hiking out West, cross-country ski marathons in Switzerland, and running the NYC marathon. One adventure he did turn down was when his good friend Woody Sayre asked him to join an expedition to climb Mt Everest.

Peace at last for a man so beloved by so many. Fond memories from all who knew him; his strong handshakes, his huge smile and hugs, always three kisses, sound advice, love for everyone about him and the pets as well.

Thanks to all the wonderful caretakers through his multiple adventures with health issues.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Martha Moore Schmidt, his children, Anne Schmidt Stites, Lee Schmidt Shorey, Will Schmidt and his wife Katie, Heidi Schmidt LaLiberte and her husband Rusty, grandchildren Eleanor Schmidt, Peter Schmidt and his wife Kayla, Winnifred Schmidt, Parker Shorey, Bethany Shorey and Miles Shorey, all of whom he inspired into careers in business, education, health care, the environment, social services, and art. He was preceded in death by two wonderful sons in law, Jack Stites and Phil Shorey.

Donations can be made to the Trustees of Reservations Andover St, North Andover, MA 01845 or the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury, P.O. Box 3000/PMB 3111, West Tisbury, MA 02575.

A church service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury, with a reception following at the Schmidt home.

The Great Zimbabwe. I hated it after my first play back in 2012. I couldn't see the board state and I was frustrated with the god/specialist combos and trying to trace routes on the board w/o markers of some kind. Completely over my head at the time. I traded it away almost immediately. I rated it a 3.

4yrs later I revisited a thread I had posted on and found the idea of the game quite intriguing. My tastes had changed over the years since and I had become a fan of spatial/logistic designs and shared economies. After 30+ plays over 18mons I changed my tune considerable and now rate it a 10.
