Spirit-Filled Evangelist: How to Share the Undiluted Gospel With an LGBT Person      Cache   Translate Page

It is very important to know how to properly share the gospel with those who would consider themselves LGBT. As Christians living in our current culture, we have a responsibility to share the gospel with everyone, regardless of how they define their sexual identity. This article will be part one of a two-part teaching on how to share the gospel with people who consider themselves LGBT.

Many Christians feel intimidated about sharing with someone that is dealing with gender and sexual identity issues. This is often because of the prominent mindset pushed within the culture and media, which says that those who disagree with gay marriage and believe in a biblical view of sexuality and gender are haters.

Just because the culture has embraced an unbiblical mindset about sexuality does not mean we can forsake our responsibility as Christians to share the gospel with those who are LGBT. More than ever, we need to know how to share the gospel with everyone. In the following paragraphs, I will be sharing the method and strategy that has best worked for me in ministry.

I run an outreach and evangelism ministry where I, and those who work with me, do a large amount of street ministry and evangelistic outreaches. I have ministered to more LGBT people than the "average" Christian. The way the Holy Spirit has led me to minister in these situations has been to deal with the individual's total identity rather than dealing only with the specific sexual sin.

If you have trouble knowing how to share the gospel with someone who considers themselves LGBT, what I am about to share below will greatly help you.

It is important to understand that many people who are LGBT have automatic defenses up against Christians. Some of this is because they may have come across harshly condemning Christians throughout their lives. It can also be because they have a root of rebellion against God and heavy demonic bondage. And at still other times it is because the media often demonizes Christian morality and beliefs in a way that is inflated and inaccurate. It is also possible that there are various mixtures of all three of these things inside each individual.

When I am sharing the gospel with someone who is LGBT, they will often throw their sexuality to the forefront of the conversation. Rather than arguing with them specifically about the topic of homosexuality, I will begin to talk with them about identity. When ministering, it is easy to get caught in mental back-and-forths and get lost arguing. The gospel primarily deals with the heart. It is good to avoid fruitless arguments of the mind.

The first question I will ask the person I am sharing with is how long they have identified themselves the way they currently do. It is an important question to understand where they are coming from. Is it a recent decision? Is it a decision that has been embraced for decades? The answer enables me to better know how to approach the situation.

From there, I will ask him or her if there have been any events in their life that were very wounding. Sometimes they will share that they experienced sexual abuse as a child; other times they will share about a horrible relationship with a parent or even a former spouse. Sometimes, they will not want to answer, or they will say that they have not experienced any trauma. It is important to not be timid when asking questions. Many times, people are willing to talk about their hurt and wounding, especially if they sense the love of God when being talked to.

This is not always the case, but based on my many experiences, there is normally deep wounding in the lives of those who are LGBT. Surprisingly, they are also normally willing to share about it. They often don't believe that the wounding led to their choice to adopt a different sexual identity, but nevertheless, I have seen people share transparently about their lives with me even though they only met me minutes earlier.

Past wounding, however, does not give anyone a justifiable excuse before God for their sin. God in no way gives anyone a "free pass" for sin. Romans 1:20 is clear that all mankind is "without excuse."

The information that is shared in conversation does help me better know how to share the gospel with them. I was once sharing the gospel with a young teenage girl who recently decided to become a lesbian. She was with her girlfriend as I shared with the two of them about Christ. She opened up to me and told me that she had been raped two years earlier, and she hinted at there having been other issues of sexual abuse from men throughout her life. She said she no longer trusted men. Knowing about the wounding in her life helped me better understand the root cause of the problem and minister to her.

All people need forgiveness for all their sins, regardless of what their primary sinful bondage might be. After dealing with the wounding the person may have experienced that has led them to make their current choices, it is important to deal with the truth that each person in the world has a sinful identity.

By dealing with their identity as a sinner in need of a savior, rather than just the specific sexual sin, I bypass the confusion that can be raised to their minds. For example, if I only deal with the one issue of their sexual sin, it is easy for them to think, "Oh, he is only telling me about Jesus because I am LGBT." No, the truth is that even if they did not struggle with sexual identity issues, they would be just as in need of salvation and forgiveness through Jesus Christ as any other person. In conversation, I will share this, and it normally results in the person's defenses and walls being lowered enough to continue the conversation further.

From there, I will discuss with them about other sins like lying, stealing, cheating, hating, lusting and then explain to them the way in which all of these sins violate God's perfect standard of morality. I will tell them how we are accountable to God for all of our sin, that our sin separates us from God, and that our sin places us under His judgment.

This helps me further explain to them that each human in this world has an identity issue. This issue is that we are all sinners. We have fallen and rebelled against God and it leads to horrible consequences in our lives and the lives of others. And one of the worst effects of sin is its ability to blind perceptions. I will explain that Jesus came to set us free from our sins and set us free from an identity He never intended for us, and that He did this by taking our sin and the penalty for our sin on the cross. All of this lays a strong foundation for what will be discussed in Part 2.

In Part 2, I will further explain specific examples that better help us as believers convey the truth that each person has an identity issue that only repenting and believing the gospel can resolve. {eoa}

Lack Of Charter School Accountability Was Baked Into the System From the Start      Cache   Translate Page

Note [of exasperation]:
I'm beginning to think the Star has a policy: "Never write the words, 'According to an article by Craig Harris in the Republic . . .'" Harris has written a groundbreaking series of articles on charter school corruption and profiteering which has statewide relevance, but to my recollection, the Star hasn't mentioned any of them, nor has it done similar investigations on its own.

Craig Harris has a new article in The Republic that takes another look at the lack of charter school regulation and accountability. Not only does the State Board for Charter Schools conduct minimal charter school oversight, it doesn't acknowledge public complaints about charters on its website.…

Pac-12 power rankings: Finally some points for the South after big wins for Utah, Arizona      Cache   Translate Page

Utah “upset” Stanford and Arizona narrowly beat Cal to cause some significant shakeups this week in the Pac-12 power rankings. Imagine what a UCLA win over Washington might have done. Everyone except Arizona and Arizona State either moves up or down after a positive weekend of results for the South, which finally showed us something and began to close the gap on its neighbors from the North.

1. Washington (5-1, 3-0; last week: No. 1) – Even including the 24 points UCLA scored against UW last weekend in the Rose Bowl, the Huskies have given up 12.2 points per game since a season-opening loss to Auburn. But UW’s breakout star has been a wide receiver – Aaron Fuller – who has 574 yards on just 35 catches through six games.

2. Oregon (4-1, 1-1; last week: No. 3) – Mario Cristobal has engineered a 4-1 start for the 17th-ranked Ducks, who’ve outscored opponents 197-84 in their wins this season. The other four first-year Pac-12 coaches, who admittedly had much tougher rebuilds than Cristobal, are a combined 7-16.

3. Colorado (5-0, 2-0; last week: No. 4) – Colorado’s offense has some definite playmakers in quarterback Steven Montez, running back Travon McMillian and wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr., but it’s still important to consider that the Buffaloes have played five teams with a combined record of 6-21. None of those has a winning record, either.

4. Washington State (5-1, 2-1; last week: No. 5) – Gardner Minshew and the Cougars are outscoring teams 86-22 in the fourth quarter this season. If WSU can apply that same success to the back half of its schedule, the Cougars will easily roll to a fourth consecutive bowl bid.

5. Utah (3-2, 1-2; last week: No. 8) – Kyle Whittingham and the Utes absorbed two losses during a rough three-game stretch against the Pac-12 North. It’s hard to imagine Utah competing for a South title if it can’t take three of the next four from Arizona, USC, UCLA and Arizona State.

6. Stanford (3-2, 1-1; last week: No. 2) – Maybe the Cardinal would’ve been better off conceding a loss to Oregon three weeks ago in Eugene. Since beating the Ducks in overtime, Stanford has lost two games by 40 points – and quite a lot of ground in these rankings, too.

7. USC (3-2, 2-1; last week: No. 6) – True freshman quarterback JT Daniels, with four touchdowns and three interceptions, is playing better than his stat line indicates. The rookie has a chance to push USC into the Pac-12 South lead this weekend if he and the Trojans can beat Colorado.

8. Cal (3-2, 0-2; last week: No. 7) – If the Golden Bears can’t scrape out a win in their next two games – at home versus UCLA and at Oregon State – the 2018 season could turn out much like the 2017 one for Cal: a 3-0 nonconference start but no postseason bid.

9. Arizona State (3-3, 1-2; last week: No. 9) – The Herm Edwards Experience? So far, so good. The Sun Devils have a real shot at bowl eligibility as long as they can keep running back Eno Benjamin healthy.

10. Arizona (3-3, 2-1; last week: No. 10) – The Wildcats forced four turnovers against Cal, beat the Golden Bears 24-17 and moved one game over .500 in Pac-12 play. The other way to look at that? Arizona forced four turnovers against Cal and scored only 24 points. There are still troubling times in Tucson.

11. UCLA (0-5, 0-2; last week: No. 12) – The winless Bruins played well enough to beat 10 of 11 teams in the Pac-12 on Saturday. That’s enough for a temporary move up the rankings.

12. Oregon State (1-5, 0-3; last week: No. 11) – The bye week gives Jonathan Smith 14 days to prepare some new tricks. More important, it gives Beavers running back Jermar Jefferson (865 yards) two weeks to recharge his motor.

Final North Dakota Points for 2018      Cache   Translate Page
North Dakota is the first of several states that I track points on that has completed its racing season for 2018 and following are the complete standings for the divisions followed. These points are tabulated in the same manner as the All Iowa Points using a 5-point scale on features only and, as I have the past two seasons, following the race at the dome in St. Louis I will combine all of the states together to present the "Best of the Midwest" for 2018. First though, let's take a look at North Dakota.

For the third straight year Dustin Strand tops the list of Late Model drivers posting seven feature wins in nineteen top five finishes. This placed him comfortably ahead of runner-up Canadian Mike Balcaen who also had nineteen top fives, but with two feature wins.

In the Modifieds Travis Peery is the 2018 champion edging out Jason Wolla by just four points. Peery picked up three feature wins in twenty top five finishes while Wolla, who obviously cut back on his schedule after being the 2017 IMCA National Champion, had eight wins and thirteen top fives. As a comparison, in winning the North Dakota Points last year, Wolla scored a total of 154 points. Peery was eighth in last year's standings with just 33.

After ranking third in last year's standings Kelly Henderson moves to the top in the Limited Modifieds for 2018. The Minot driver was a winner seven times and has twenty-seven to five finishes, seven more than last year's champion Lance Shill. The runner-up the past two seasons, Erik Laudenschlager finished third this year so the top three drivers essentially traded positions.

The state runner-up in 2017, Wade Nygaard moves to the top this season in the Sprint Car standings on the strength of twenty-two top five finishes and seven feature wins. The 2016 champ Mark Dobmeier was second with nine wins, two second's and one third making up his point total of 56.

In Part 2, I will further explain specific examples that better help us as believers convey the truth that each person has an identity issue that only repenting and believing the gospel can resolve. {eoa}

Grip on Sports: The college basketball season can't start fast enough for some but is too early for others      Cache   Translate Page

A GRIP ON SPORTS • College basketball games are right around the corner. Seems awful early, doesn’t it? Not anymore it doesn’t. Read on.

••••••••••

• Twenty years ago, Gonzaga basketball began a season that would change the trajectory of the program. It would finish in a classic matchup with Connecticut, one win from a Final Four berth.

But it all began in mid-November with a game versus the Jayhawks in Kansas.

By mid-November this season, the Zags will have played a “secret” scrimmage with Michigan State, an exhibition game with Central Washington and two regular season home games – against Idaho State and Texas Southern.

All that after weeks of practice, including a summer filled with either individual workouts, small group sessions or competitions overseas.

It’s almost a year-long sport.

As are most college sports.

Not that such schedules are all that new. It’s just that the high-profile sports – football and basketball – seem to take up more and more of the year.

Back in the late 1970s, when my knees didn’t ache all the time, I played baseball all year-round. We started school at UC Irvine in late September or early October, and baseball practice started the second week. Games were occasionally during the week, with a doubleheader on Saturday. I counted one year. We played 95 games, including all the fall games. There wasn’t much in the way of rules and the warm-weather schools just played all the time.

The NCAA stepped in, limited the time on the field and college baseball has never been the same.

(By the way, if I could have played eight hours a day, seven days a week, I probably would have. It was that fun. And I am sure many players in many sports feel the same way today I did then. )

With basketball, however, the NCAA is allowing coaches more and more time with players. It’s a good thing. Yes, there are limits. But if you limit the time a player can work with his college staff too much, the motivated ones will find someone to help them with their game, someone who is outside the NCAA’s sphere of control. It was happening more and more when the season limits were stricter.

That opens a plastic bag of worms no one wants opened, so the NCAA allowed college staffs more time with the players. It was one of the few good ideas the organization has instituted lately.

But the game schedule creeping into October isn’t needed. Don’t be surprised if it doesn’t happen someday soon, though. It seems inevitable. Just like GU making the NCAA Tournament come March.

WSU: The story of this Pac-12 season has been colored by the dominance of the North. But the South earned a couple key wins last weekend. And the division’s teams moved up in Theo Lawson’s power rankings this week. … Theo spoke with Larry Weir yesterday for the latest Press Box pod.

Elsewhere in the Pac-12, the bowl picture among the conference’s best becomes clearer each week. … The title picture should become a bit clearer after this Saturday. The biggest game is in Eugene, where Oregon hosts rivalWashington. The Huskies’ defense will be in the crosshairs, as the Ducks’ offense tries to keep up with the UW stars. … Colorado’s defense will be tested by J.T. Daniels and a well-rested USC offense. … Utah will attempt to keep its momentum going against Arizona and Khalil Tate. … The UCLAdefensive line hopes to have its way with California. … Injuries are always a part of football. Arizona State is dealing with a crucial one. … With the basketball media day coming up, there are ballots being sent in. We pass along any we find. One of the favorites, UCLA, has lost another freshman for the season. … Finally, if this court decision stands up, it may change the nature of the NCAA.

Gonzaga: Ya, it’s a secret. Big one. GU and Michigan State will meet in a scrimmage later this month in Minneapolis. The secret part is no one will be their to document it. Jim Meehan has more in this story.

EWU: You want to be successful at any level of football? You better have a strong backup quarterback. The Eagles do, and he’ll be called on this week once again. Ryan Collingwood has the story of Eric Barriere. … Around the Big Sky, will Northern Colorado win a game? … Montana and North Dakota have a history. … Montana State’s offense isn’t built to attack Idaho’s defensive weakness. … Idaho State’s offense is, and that’s one of the reasons the Bengals are doing so well this season.

Preps: It was a busy Tuesday night in the area and we have roundups from soccer, slowpitch and volleyball to pass along.

Boxing: Chauncy Welliver is returning to the ring. Dan Thompson shares why and what’s ahead for the local boxer.

Chiefs: In other WHL news, an Everett player is hit with a five-game suspension.

Seahawks: The biggest news this week? The Hawks get to try to tackle Marshawn Lynch. They tackled what he meant to them yesterday and the consensus was clear: The Seahawk players miss him. … Doug Baldwin isn't hurt. … But others are. … Rashaad Penny isn't, but he is frustrated.

Sounders: The Seattle fans are as passionate about their team as any group in the MLS. It's not hard to understand. … As the regular season winds down, a player or two may have to step up to help the Sounders succeed.

•••

• There is a good chance there will not be a Grip on Sports column tomorrow. Not because I don’t want to do one, but due to a hurricane that may or may not disrupt my travel plans. Its impact on what I am planning for tomorrow is still unclear. If there is one, it will be available here, of course. If there isn’t one, I’ll send out the Bat Signal on Twitter. Until later …

How to Defeat the Devil's Dynamic Duo      Cache   Translate Page

"God, I can't do this. I'm so sick and tired of fighting."

"Yes, you can. You can do all things through Me; I give you strength."

"This isn't fun anymore, God."

"Trust me. I will lead you. I will give you the words. Do you trust Me?"

"Yes Lord, I trust You."

"You can do this. With Me."

"God, my heart. It's so ... afraid."

My heart is so afraid? Of what? Surprised at this personal revelation, I asked God why. What do I have to fear? Pain? Lack of provision? People's opinion? Or how about the deep-seated fears of failure, rejection, inadequacy and being seen?

I recently asked God how I will overcome my fear of rejection. His response? "By being rejected and realizing you are OK. More than OK." Because in Christ, fear is a fraud. Apart from Him, I would be terrified.

"Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell" (Matt. 10:28).

So what am I believing? Why is my heart so afraid? What is my heart afraid of? What is fear? Is it a feeling? A fact? A façade?

Fear: (n).

- a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; the condition of being afraid

- a specific instance of such a feeling

- concern or anxiety

Fear is a feeling. A falsehood. An illusion. A deception of grandeur.

Imagine I am coming home late one night. I walk up the stairs into my dimly lit apartment, and I see a dark shadowy figure in the corner. Who's there? What are they doing in my home? I'm gripped with fear and begin to back away.

Jesus nudges me forward and says, "It's OK. Don't be afraid. I'm here. There is nothing to fear. I am with you." He coaxes me forward, but I don't fully believe Him until He turns on the light. The shadowy figure in the corner is revealed for what it truly is—a coat on a coat rack. An inanimate object with no power over me except for the authority I gave it. I feel a fool for fearing and doubting Jesus. Doubting His goodness and His word. Doubting who He is and who He says I am. Standing there in the light, I see how silly my fear really was.

How did fear enter? Why does it keep coming back? All because of doubt

The enemy comes only to steal, kill and destroy. Doubt and fear are the devil's debilitating dynamic duo, the brains and brawn (respectively) behind some of his most excellent heists. Doubt comes to pick the lock of my home, perpetually patronizing me with "Did God really say ...?" until he gets a foothold. "Did God really say to start this blog? Did God really say to quit your job and trust He will provide for you? Did God really say He will never leave you nor forsake you?"

Doubt is extremely deceptive. He doesn't show up announcing his arrival, obvious and identifiable. Rather, he masquerades in my mind as my own voice, whispering thoughts that speak directly to the lies I am more inclined to believe: Is what I write relevant? Will I have the words? Do the words I have even matter? Don't people already know the truth? What difference will my voice make? God, I ask You to use me, but will You really?

Once I begin to entertain the thoughts Doubt has proposed to my mind, he's in. Fear plows through and ravishes my body, paralyzing me with anxiety, dread and panic. I'm frozen. Doubt circles back with some devastating blows as I stand there, motionless. Did God really call you? Do you actually hear God? Do you even know Him? Did Jesus really save you? Fear grips me even more tightly, while Doubt destroys everything I've built in my spiritual home.

Hopelessness and Despair waltz in through the wide-open door, stealing my peace, joy and freedom. In my unbelief, I am cut off from God. Isolated. An operative immobilized, useless in advancing the kingdom of heaven.

Steal. Kill. Destroy. The devil's done it again. The only way out of infinitely spiraling down the rabbit hole into the devil's wonderland of fear is up. Up to faith in Jesus Christ.

I have nothing to fear if I truly believe the Word of God and take Him at His word. If I believe He is the ultimate healer, then there is no pain this heart cannot take. "He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds" (Ps. 147:3). If I believe He is the ultimate provider, then there is nothing I need that I will go without. "But my God shall supply your every need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus" (Phil. 4:19). If I believe His power is made perfect in my weakness, then not only will I not be afraid of inadequacy or failure, but "most gladly I will boast in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me" (2 Cor. 12:9b).

If I believe God is:

  • Omnipotent (having unlimited power; able to do anything)
  • Omniscient (having complete or unlimited knowledge, awareness, or understanding; perceiving all things)
  • Omnipresent (present everywhere at the same time)

Then what on this earth do I have to fear? Nothing. No Thing.

Every new season will have a new set of doubts and fears. With new territory comes new giants. But fighting them will still be the same. By faith. The only antidote for fear is faith. Doubt goes directly for the heart of faith. It cuts you off from Jesus Christ—the one true source of freedom, life, hope and salvation. Doubt is not an option for the believer. Saved by faith. Healed by faith. Called to action and courage by faith in God. Faith is something you have, are given more of and is tested in your life. Faith can be grown and lost. You have to protect your faith. Feed your faith. Fight the good fight of faith. Grasp tightly to your faith in Jesus. He fuels you. He fills you. Apart from Him you can do nothing. No thing.

God is not going to remove us from the battle, He is going to teach us how to fight—how to fight and win. We are warriors in boot camp, getting stronger and being stretched farther beyond what we thought we were capable of. He is training us to send us back out. He frees us, saves us, heals us, trains us and sends us back into the valley of the shadow of death to help set other captives free. He does all the work. The only requirement of us is faith. Without faith, it is impossible to please God. {eoa}

CHARTER SCHOOLS are nothing more than Republican attempts to take public money and put it in private hands that will support Republicans in government while at the same time eliminating the National Teachers Union. Charter Schools can hire and fire who they want and Unionized Teachers will go first.

Considering the cartoon, right wing nut jobs only listen to religious or country music and Taylor Swift is contemporary pop music. She doesn't have anything to worry about unless one of the right wing nit wits with a gun goes to a concert and tries to silence her mic.

I think the Tucson Weekly needs to revisit the Sonoran Science Academy and the stuff they get away with. Everything from Racism, discrimination, money laundering, insurance fraud and so on.
