High time to say ‘no’ to fascism, racism, disparity

DF Editor´s Desk

The Turku Court of Appeal on September 28 upheld a ban imposed by a lower court on Suomen Vastarintaliike (Finnish Resistance Movement), the Finnish chapter of the neo-Nazi group Nordic Resistance Movement (PVL).

We welcome this historic verdict which will not only dissuade the fascist or extremist radical forces to be formed and operate in this country but also have a long-term positive impact on the social wellbeing. When we examine the background and activities of Suomen Vastarintaliike, we don’t find them to go with the Finnish values, culture, and norms. The Finns are highly acclaimed as a peaceful and peace-loving nation across the globe. The appeal court’s ruling once again proves that Finland in no way will tolerate or allow any fascist, racist or indiscriminating activity to go on in the society.

The Nordic Resistance Movement was founded in Sweden in 1996 and branched out to the rest of the Nordic countries, i.e., Finland, Norway, Iceland, and Denmark.

The group triggered off a storm of debate, discussion, and condemnation in September 2016 following the death of a man being assaulted during a neo-Nazi rally at the Helsinki Central Railway Station. People from all professions and social strata voiced strong protests against the incident. On 24 September 2016, more than 15,000 people gathered in Helsinki and condemned racism and violence.

In October 2017, a Finnish member of the organisation was sentenced to two years of imprisonment for his involvement in the incident of assault that took place on September 2016.

And in November 2017, the Pirkanmaa District Court banned the activities of the Nordic Resistance Movement (PVL) as well as its regional chapters and the PVL-linked Pohjoinen Perinne or Nordic Tradition group. The PVL appealed against the ruling but the Turku Court of Appeal overruled the appeal. The appeal court’s decision in effect makes it illegal for the Nordic Resistance Movement to mobilise, demonstrate or propagandise in Finland.

As we said, the ban on the PVL also spells wide-scale positive consequences for the Finnish society, including encouragement to progressive forces as well as the people in general to continue to work for instituting human rights and equal rights, as well as protecting the interests of minority groups including the immigrants.

Political ideology and strategy also have a vital role to play in routing racism, fascism, and disparity from all sectors of the society. The appeal court’s verdict is very important at this time, when far-right political groups have emerged as vital political actors in many a European country in the recent past. We have seen the advancement of the rightwing populist party, Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), in Germany, the populist Five Star Movement in Italy, and, finally, the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats (SD) in Sweden.

The timing of the verdict is also significant as Finland is now preparing to hold the next parliamentary elections in April 2019. The Finns should consider the issue seriously before casting their votes so that parties with an attitude or advocating an ideology of disparity, racism or fascism do not get a chance to influence the country’s politics and policy-making. To support a fanatic force will but push the country backwards. Only people have the power to decide the outcome through their choice made in the national elections.

This is high time for the Finns to say no to all negative forces and ideologies and to safeguard their country’s image as a land of equal rights, peace, and wellbeing.

„Do they have their own trusts and secrecy companies in tax havens you have to look for that,“ spurði Eva Joly strax eftir hrunið 2009. „And one thing is sure If there are stolen assets they are not in Iceland.“ Nokkru áður var sérstakur saksóknari skipaður til að rannsaka hrunsmálin, og Joly var ráðin til að starfa náið með honum. Rannsóknin var af gæðum Rúmlega 200 mál voru rannsökuð, þar af fór á þriðja tug fyrir dóm. Einn opinber starfsmaður og um það bil 40 stjórnendur, bankamenn og viðskiptafélagar þeirra hlutu dóma. 25 hafa setið inni, tveir bíða afplánunar og enn eru nokkur mál til meðferðar hjá dómstólum. „It means that an investigation was of quality, it means that your legal system had the capacity to take these cases and this also means probably your legal system is well functioning,“ segir Joly um rannsóknina í dag. Þessu eru margir þeirra sem dæmdir voru reyndar ósammála. Í samtölum Kveiks við fjölda þeirra sögðust þeir telja að dómstólar hefðu verið ósanngjarnir og þeir hefðu verið saksóttir að ósekju. Heiftúðugt andrúmsloft í samfélaginu hafi haft áhrif á dómgreind saksóknara og dómstóla. „They presented really, accountings that where not reflecting the real state or play of the banks. This is criminal,“ segir Joly. „You cannot expect people that have been through this process which is very difficult - especially when you are a white collar criminal because you are used to be VIP you are used to be treated very well everyplace you went its much more difficult than for a burglar for instance. So that is not astonishing that they are not accepting their sentences.“ „Because their fall is so high and so big.“ Og nú er aftur komið bullandi góðæri En er nóg að gert, er verkefninu lokið? Þannig að embættið var skorið niður allt of snemma? „Það var gert, já.“ Hvenær skal stoppa? Joly segir það alltaf erfitt að ákveða hvar eigi að hætta í rannsóknum. „But maybe they should have looked into also little more who really benefited from all this crime,“ segir hún og nefnir sérstaklega stærstu eigendur Landsbankans fyrir hrun. „They convicted the person in charge and that is absolutely normal,“ segir Joly. „But the owners of the bank they benefited from the incredible increase in value made by the manipulation for instance. And I think maybe here they could have looked a little more thoroughly to what happened. And I am saying this also because of what the Panamapapers scandal revealed.“ Hún bendir til að mynda á vef aflandsfélaga sem Björgólfur Thor og faðir hans Björgólfur Guðmundsson eiga - eða áttu - en kort yfir þau var birt í Stundinni í júní 2016. „And here there are really questions to be asked and answers to be obtained. Are we sure that all these companies are not linked to the crisis? Are we sure that there are not loans that were given to these companies and has anybody checked the loanbook against this scheme? This is really a theme for a new investigation.“ Tjáir sig ekki um Björgólfsfeðga Ólafur Þór tjáir sig ekki um þetta. „Nú get ég voðalega lítið tjáð mig um einstök mál eða svarað ásökunum á hendur einstökum aðilum. Það var farið í þær rannsóknir sem að þótti tilefni til og reynt að leiða það fram sem menn þurftu að fá í sambandi við það,“ segir hann. Sömu sögu hefur Bryndís Kristjánsdóttir skattransóknnarstjóri að segja. „Ég get ekki svarað þessu sökum þess að ég hef ekki heimild til þess að tjá mig um einstök mál. En það sem ég get þó sagt er að einhvers staðar í skattkerfinu var farið yfir alla þá aðila sem eru á listanum,“ segir hún. Björgólfur Thor samdi um skuldir sínar og samkvæmt upplýsingum frá honum nam uppgjörið um 1200 milljónum króna. Að hans sögn veitti hann kröfuhöfum aðgang að öllum reikningum sínum og félaga sinna nokkur ár aftur í tímann. Björgólfur Thor er aftur orðinn ríkasti maður landsins. Faðir hans varð hins vegar gjaldþrota. Nam gjaldþrotið 85 milljörðum króna og fengust 35 milljónir greiddar upp í lýstar kröfur. Kveikur óskaði eftir viðtali við þá feðga en fékk ekki. Milljarðarnir fyrir hrun sem fóru Fyrir hrun högnuðust margir gríðarlega á óeðlilegum uppgangi hlutabréfamarkaðarins, en voru ekkert endilega á því að greiða skatt af hagnaðinum. Indriði H. Þorláksson var ríkisskattstjóri á uppgangsárunum. „Það er einn liður í þessu máli að íslenska skattalöggjöfin varðandi hvað eigum við að segja skattfrestun þegar menn selja eða fá söluhagnað af hlutabréfum að þá er það mjög einfalt bara að setja þá í að stofna félag erlendis og losna þannig við skatt. Öll þessi atriði þarf að skoða og þau gerðu þetta mögulegt á sínum tíma og þau eru flest til staðar ennþá,“ segir hann. Og það virðast Íslendingar hafa stundað. Í Panamaskjölunum, sem voru gerð opinber í apríl 2016, var afhjúpað að Íslendingar ættu líklega heimsmet í eign aflandsfélaga. Þar af voru meðal annars þrír ráðherrar í ríkisstjórn Íslands á þeim tíma. „In a general way you can not be finance minister and hiding away from regulary authorities of your country,“ segir Joly og bætir við: „It is very worrysome.“ „This means that your elite does not want to play by the rules. They want to have a special treatment and as you know about it - something should be done about it.“ Umsvifamiklir Íslendingar Það kom almenningi á óvart hvað Íslendingar voru umsvifamiklir í Panamaskjölunum. „If you do not deal with this there is no reason it will stop and it will end with the fact that all the hairdressers, the butchers, the groceries will set up companies in Luxembourg with their work and you will end up with no tax revenue,“ segir hún. Segist hafa séð Panmaskjölin fyrir löngu Þó að almenningur hafi staðið á gati yfir uppljóstrunum Panamaskjalanna og skattrannsóknarstjóra hafi verið burgðið við umfangið voru ekki allir þar. Sérstakur saksóknari segir aðspurður að ekki hafi verið tilefni til frekari rannsókna eftir að skjölin komu fram. „Nei. „It is very important to go after the money and it is very important to confiscate the ill gotten money. Criminality should not pay. And you have the means in the lawbook to freeze and to confiscate,“ segir Joly. „Okay Iceland wanted foreign direct investment. Most countries do. To attract foreign direct investment you are given advantages but you must be sure that it is not criminal money that has been stuffed outside the country in tax haven companies that are coming back,“ segir hún. „Unless it is very unfair and revolting.“ Skatturinn með gögnin Skattrannsóknarstjóri hefur reyndar fengið upplýsingar frá Seðlabankanum um hverjir það voru sem komu með peninga til landsins, en vill ekki gefa upp nöfnin. „You have different principles that adhere. One is that when you have served your sentence and paid your debt you are allowed to start a normal life again but if you are convicted for economic crime it would be normal that in the sentence you should have been maybe stopped from doing business again,“ segir hún. „For instance in France you can be barred for five years, ten years, fifteen years from doing business.“
Sjóðsstjórinn sem gerir sem minnst      Cache   Translate Page
„Nevada PERS is currently 41.2 billion dollars,“ segir hann. Sem eru hátt í 4.300 milljarðar króna, miðað við meðalgengi Bandaríkjadals á þessu ári . Heildareignir íslenskra lífeyrissjóða í lok síðasta árs voru rétt rúmlega 4.100 milljarðar. Einfaldur og lítill sjóður „We’ve always been known as the simple fund. We pay the lowest investment fees in the industry. We have the fewest employees. I’m the only investment employee here at NevadaPERS,“ segir hann. Steve heldur sem sagt einn og sjálfur utan um allar fjárfestingar lífeyrissjóðsins. Samt sem áður hefur honum tekist að ávaxta eignir hans betur en heilu herdeildum fjárfesta hjá öðrum lífeyrissjóðum. Hver er galdurinn? „Keep fees low. Keep it simple. Fewer moving parts. We invest in high quality assets and we’re going to do it over extended market cycles. And we’re going to implement that simple approach with absolute discipline.“ Steve er reyndar þekktur í fjármálaheiminum fyrir að vera maðurinn sem mætir í vinnuna og leggur sig síðan fram um að gera sem allra minnst. „Since I’ve been here at Nevada PERS we’ve cut out all active management in the fund,“ segir hann. „So I kind of took it from 90% simple to a 100% simple,“ segir hann og bætir við: „Which along with that come very low fees.“ Með þessu móti segir Steve að hann spari um 150 milljónir dala á ári, eða hátt í 16 milljarða. Og að eftirlaunaþega Nevada muni um minna. „We want every dollar available in the investment program to generate compound interest for the benefit of our members and beneficiaries. And so rather than paying those dollars out in fees we want those dollars to stay in the investment program,“ segir Steve. Á undanförnum árum hafa heyrst gagnrýnisraddir um að yfirbygging íslenska lífeyrissjóðakerfisins sé of mikil. Að of margir séu á of mörgum skrifstofum á of háum launum við að stýra þeim og reka. Ragnar Þór Ingólfsson, formaður VR, hefur átt eina af þessum röddum. „Fjórtán stærstu lífeyrissjóðirnir eru með uppgefinn og viðurkenndan 13,7 milljarða rekstrarkostnað með fjárfestingagjöldum á síðusta ári,“ sagði hann í Kastljósi í ágúst á síðasta ári. „Þetta er allt of mikil yfirbygging.“ Við spyrjum Steve hvort hann haldi að fleiri sérfræðingar og hærri fjárfestingagjöld myndu skila sér í betri ávöxtun.   „Ég held að það sé mögulegt, en ég held að það sé ólíklegt. ,“ svarar hann. „I’m confident in my ability to be a disciplined investor. I’m not a 100% confident that I can predict what’s going to happen two weeks down the road.“ Pressan líka til staðar í Nevada Í gegnum tíðina hefur reglulega skapast mikill þrýstingur á lífeyrissjóðina að fjármagna ýmiskonar verkefni með samfélagslega hagsmuni að leiðarljósi. Eins og til dæmis að byggja hjúkrunarheimili, að fjárfesta í atvinnutækifærum í heimabyggð og fleira. Svo er það auðvitað hagur þeirra sem starfa við fjárfestingar lífeyrissjóðanna – að þeir séu einmitt virkir í fjárfestingum. „Well, there’s certainly pressure. Anytime you’re responsible for 41.2 billion dollars. Outside forces? There’s always going to be people who think you should do it differently. It might be an asset manager. I might say, Hey listen, we’re going to get rid of active management. Well those managers that are involved in, their job is to do active management. Well, they’re not going to be particularly happy with that decision,“ segir hann. Hefur gengið vel Aðspurður segir Steve að ávöxtun sjóðsins hafi verið góð. „Returns have been strong, but that’s largely due to financial markets having been strong. So last year, the previous fiscal year, our returns were 11,9 prósent,“ segir hann. „We’re fortunate that returns have been strong, really, over extended time periods as well so going back 34 years, which is the inception of our fund, our annualized return, kind of the average return over all those years is about 9.3%.“ „So, I would say that it’s been successful. And that’s kind of the, I guess the proof stamp on our simple approach. Because the question is, alright well you have one employee and you don’t pay any fees, well that’s great but what have the results been like? And our results have been competitive relative to more complex portfolios.“ Leyndarmálið einfalt Það liggur beint við að spyrja hvert leyndmárlið að velgengninni sé. „I wish that it was fancier. But really it isn’t. It’s as simple as we’ve been disciplined. And we’ve stuck with this approach for very long time periods. We’ve stuck with this approach when the environment isn’t necessary a good environment for that approach. Öfugt við þá sem leggja áherslu á virka sjóðastjórnun reynir Steve að láta sér fátt um finnast þegar fjármálamarkaðir taka byltur. Hann vinnur yfirleitt ekki utan hefðbundins vinnutíma, frá átta til fimm, og missir ekki svefn þótt sitthvað gangi á. „It’s easy to get diverted into thinking that changing is always a good thing. For an investment program that’s designed for 30, 40, 50 years it really shouldn’t be changed all that often,“ segir Steve. „Public pensions or pension funds, conceptually, should be among the longest time horizon investors in the market. And it’s easy to forget about that in a world where we live in a 24-hour news cycle and constant news in terms of what happening in the financial markets.“ „The important thing for a 30-year investment program is to implement that over the entirety of the 30 years and not worry about what happens next week in the financial markets. But when you are living through it, it’s easier said than done.“ Er það þá satt að góður dagur í vinnunni sé dagur þegar þú gerir nánast ekki neitt? Eða mjög lítið? „Well, I get asked that question a lot. Well, you are the fund that does nothing. But doing nothing is harder than it sounds,“ segir hann. „But in terms of making changes to the portfolio, it’s definitely a good day if we haven’t done anything.“ Af hverju gera þetta ekki allir? Í umfjöllun um Steve og velgengni hans hefur stundum verið látið að því liggja að hann sé eini starfsmaður lífeyrissjóðsins, sem stemmir reyndar ekki alveg. Hið rétta er að hann er eini starfsmaðurinn sem hefur með fjárfestingar að gera, sem er vissulega óvenjulegt. Fyrir utan Steve vinna rúmlega 70 manns önnur störf fyrir sjóðinn. Til samanburðar má nefna að meira en þrefalt fleiri vinna hjá íslenskum lífeyrissjóðum, þótt þeir séu í heild smærri en þessi eini sjóður. Hvað finnst þér um þá mynd sem er dreginn upp af þér og sjóðnum, að þið séuð sjóðurinn sem geri ekki neitt? „If that’s the way that people will perceive us from the outside I’m certainly happy to be that fund. And again, I believe that really, we should not be making changes that often. So, if we’re the fund that does nothing, well, I’ll take that. That’s ok,“ segir hann. En af hverju eru þá ekki allir að gera það sem þið eruð að gera? „Well, what works here in Nevada doesn’t necessarily work other places. It works for us. And the trick is ultimately finding the right balance. Whatever that approach is can certainly work but if you abandon it at the wrong time then it doesn’t matter how smart the approach is, it’s not going to work,“ segir Steve. Erfitt að bera saman Íslenska lífeyrissjóðakerfið er samsett úr 24 sjóðum sem samtals eru álíka stórir og þessi eini sjóður sem Steve fjárfestir fyrir. Hann segist ekki geta gefið álit á þeirri stöðu. „You know, again, I really couldn’t because I don’t totally understand what that structure looks like,“ segir Steve. „There might very well be a very good reason why there’s 24 separate funds in Iceland. I kind of have my hands full here in Nevada, so I spend all my time thinking about what happens in Nevada. But I have zero information about what happens in Iceland.“ „Engir bónusar hér í Nevada“ Eitt af því sem gagnrýnt hefur verið við íslenska kerfið eru laun stjórnenda. „Það getur ekki verið nein hagkvæmni í því þegar við erum með yfirbyggingu á íslenska lífeyrissjóðakerfinu þar sem að lykilstjórnendur og stjórnarmenn voru með í launagreiðslur 940 milljónur á síðasta ári,“ sagði Ragnar Þór til dæmis í fyrrnefndu Kastljósviðtali. En hvað ætli Steve fái greitt? „Á síðasti ári þénaði ég 145 þúsund dollara,“ svarar hann. Það er ígildi mánaðarlauna upp á eina komma þrjár milljónir króna eða rúmar 15 milljónir á ári. „If I wanted to make more money I would go someplace else and do that,“ segir Steve um kjörin. „So, lucurious no, but we feel pretty good about what we do.“ Það eru heldir engir bónusar sem toga launin upp. „Nei, engir bónusar hér í Nevada.“ Það er þó ekki að sjá að hann sé óánægður í starfi. „What more can you ask for then getting to do something that I enjoy doing, which is finance and doing it for something that I believe in which is the public employees of Nevada,“ segir Steve. „There’s never a day that I come into the office and I’m not excited about what I do. Even though it’s a day where you do nothing? Well some days are more challenging than others and some days there’s going to be challenges and even on the boring days I enjoy what I do.“

The Hobo Guide to Wild Camping in Europe      Cache   Translate Page

I’m camping in Europe at the moment. Pitching my tent at rest stops, in the mountains and inconspicuously behind bushes on private land. I’m camping because there are some day hikes I can’t bear to leave after only a few hours. I want to wake up in the fog and sleep amongst all the creatures that explore the land at night. I’m also doing it to stretch the little money I flew to Europe with.

Each country has its own laws when it comes to wild camping. Here’s a list, but please do your own research if you’re really concerned.

Wild camping is legal in: Sweden, Albania, Armenia, Belarus, Bosnia, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Russia, Slovakia, Turkey, Ukraine, Scotland

Wild camping is a bit of a grey area in: France, Austria, Bulgaria, Czech, Hungary, Moldova, Netherlands, Romania, Serbia, Switzerland

Wild camping is totally illegal in: Italy, Aldorra, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain (they’re really complicated), England, Wales

However, if you’re setting up shop just to rest your head for the night, camping is generally permissible. Pitch at dark and leave in the morning and nobody’s going to bat an eyelid, especially if you’re out of sight. How many times do you drive on a highway or pass a mountain and look for a tent? Worst case scenario: plead ignorance. You’re a tourist.

Here are my packing essentials:

1. A tent

If you’re heading over in summer, you can probably get away with a festival tent, especially if you’ve got some cash in the bank to splurge on accommodation when there’s a stormy night. I use a lightweight two-person Vango Bravo 200, because I need something I can carry on my back with the rest of my stuff that can also accommodate a mate, should I meet one on my journey.

If you’re wild camping, especially in places where wild camping is considered illegal or a grey area, maybe invest in something a little more inconspicuous than the blue one I’ve gone for. You can spot that baby from a mile away.

Track name – “Nemesis”
Album – “Surrounded by Thieves”

The art work for this album struck me immediately. Rotoscoped image of a warrior, pure animated Bakshi Lord of The Rings. Matt’s guitar tone, pure Matamp soupiness. Des’s drums like aeons of a mountain forming, compressed into hammer fall precision. This song is High on Fire a top a mountain, slaying hordes of undead, impossible levels of gore and blood streaming down their armour. TOTAL CARNAGE.

Marc Prentice, Ohhmshttps://ohhms.bandcamp.com

Track name – “DII”
Album – “Death Is This Communion”

I was late to the party when discovering High on Fire (from now on to be written HOF) as my first taste of them was when I bought a copy of 2007’s “Death Is This Communion.”  My sole reason for buying was based purely upon finding out that it was Matt Pike from Sleep’s other band. I was lucky enough to get a copy that had a ‘making of’ DVD. Watching the DVD and then listening to the record was enough to sell me. Riffs aside, I find myself attracted to the critical religious, conspiracy and fantastical theme of the song titles and lyrics. Being a fantasy and Sci-Fi fan, I loved the fantastical themed artwork and I’ve always imagined HOF as the Motorheadfor Tolkien fans.

My ‘Favourite’ track is, unsurprisingly, from “Death Is This Communion”. It’s the instrumental track “DII”. There’s a part in the making of DVD where you see HOF in the studio creating this song and I think this is a part of the reason as to why I enjoy it. It also it’s great because it has a great heavy riff, melodic solo and a great synth part that plays over the end of a track creating a great otherworldly sound. The tone, mood and vibe on this whole record is great and I think this song captures the feel of this record perfectly. Great instrumental track and an amazing record.

Track name – “Bastard Samurai”
Album – “Snakes for the Divine”

Love this tune due to its pure brutality and atmosphere it creates.  Plus, epic PHAT bass.  HOF’s use of fast power chord movement has certainly rubbed off on us somewhere. When I saw this band live about 12 years ago I was so high yet they totally destroyed my buzz by being so fucking brutal.   I then got a boner instead, maybe it was because of Mike being topless…  Don’t think I’ve ever had a weed boner before.

Track name – “Snakes for the Divine”
Album – “Snakes for the Divine”

“Snakes for the Divine”is a song that for me is the essence of Matt Pike boiled down into eight and a half minutes of glorious riffery. It has quite possibly one of the best intros to a metal song of all time. When I hear those first chords ring out with that epic lick over the top I can’t help of that brilliant Pike quote from Such Hawks Such Hounds about heavy being about “pissed off and being a warlord.” You know you're about to be punched in the face with the riff to follow. This is warlording at its finest and you can just picture Pike taking his axe into battle. It’s one of those songs that makes you just wanna get loose in the same way that The Stooges’ Search and Destroy does. Raw fuckin power!!

Wes Leon, Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastardhttps://mammothweedwizardbastard.bandcamp.com

Track name – “Bastard Samurai”
Album – “Snakes for the Divine”

I bought this album whilst stranded in Europe in 2010 when all flights were cancelled because of the ash cloud from the erupting volcano in Iceland and I ended up playing it on repeat due to it being the only cd I had with me for the hotel's cd player. I like the softness of the verses. Something High on Fire don't do much of is go soft but when they do they nail it, & this makes the heavy riff seem even heavier when it comes in. This track stands out for me because of the slower tempo compared to most of the other tracks on the album. I’d say its a good album to be stranded somewhere with.

Adam Robertshaw, Barbarian Hermithttps://barbarianhermit.bandcamp.com

Track Name – “Snakes for the Divine”

The title track of High on Fire's fifth album was the first that really caught my attention and for that reason it will always be a stand out track for me. I was a fan of Sleep and had heard the name HOF but when the album received such critical acclaim in the press I decided to check the album out, and from the off you're greeted by this monster.

As soon as the epic, Maiden-on-steroids intro kicks in you're hooked in and dragged along for the ride as Pike and co blast through gritty thrash and thunderous groove territories. The guitar riffs and bass lines weave in and out of one another like the eponymous snakes in the title.

You'll definitely hear the influence of this and other Hire on Firetracks like it on our new album “Solitude and Savagery”, especially on songs like “Reawaken”

The minister was admitted to the hospital on October 6 for the treatment of a severe erysipelas skin infection in his foot.

The minister, however, will be on sick leave, which likely to be continued until October 30, the press release added.

The Minister had to cancel his visit to Iceland scheduled from October 7 due to the sudden illness.

Earlier, on September 21, Soini survived a no-confidence motion in parliament. The motion was put forward by four opposition parties accusing Soini of publicly expressing his anti-abortion attitude blurring the international image of Finland.

Soini currently represents the populist Sininen Tulevaisuus (Blue Reform) party, a break-away fraction of the populist Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party).

Food, for example-- anyone ever eaten a... sheep's head? Saw a movie about a dog-eared police detective in Iceland who stopped by a fast food drive through for dinner. Took a while before I figured out what he was eating. Pulling the eyeball out of the skull and sucking on it was a clue....

Where should I go on my way to Lanzerote?       Cache   Translate Page
I am flying Toronto - Lanzerote (and back) at the end of March. The flights seem hellacious. I am looking for somewhere to stop for one or two days on the way there or the way back to make the flights less awful.

All the flights I have found appear to be Toronto - (somewhere) - Lanzerote. It seems to take approximately 24 hours of travel time. I thought, why not stop in the "somewhere" and take a day or two.

Some snowflakes: The week in Lanzerote is a family vacation. My boyfriend is coming (his first vacation with my family!). Money is not a huge problem. We like the prospect of a few days together on a solo mini vacation.

I am looking for:
a) any advice on this plan. Should we take the extra days at the end of the trip or before?
b) where should we go? This appears to be a list of places that would qualify (i.e. they have direct flights to Lanzerote and Toronto). Somewhere not overwhelming, easy to get around, ideally a centrally located airport, and plentiful Airbnbs.

We considered Iceland but cannot seem to make the direct flights work. Please save me from spending 24h+ in transit twice in 10 days!

If your math is going off Kyms other article about the totals given from ONE AGENCY (which it looks like) it’s complete bs. First off, like I said already those were totals from 1 agency. (Note kyms other article about how cdfw has been refusing to give any information) second of all, those numbers do not reflect the loads of people that got abatements and shut down because they were gonna get fined out the ass if they didn’t. So basically, definitely not as high as 50% but your 0.54% is an extremely shitty estimate at best.

Britain, NATO Prepare For War On Russia In The Arctic      Cache   Translate Page

Authored by Brian Cloughley via The Strategic Culture Foundation,

On September 30 the UK’s foreign minister, Jeremy Hunt, delivered an astonishing tirade, saying “The EU was set up to protect freedom. It was the Soviet Union that stopped people leaving. The lesson from history is clear: if you turn the EU club into a prison, the desire to get out won’t diminish, it will grow — and we won’t be the only prisoner that will want to escape.”

His comparison of the EU to gulags of former years played well with many people in Britain, but was understandably regarded as totally inappropriate by the EU, whose spokesman’s polite observation was “I would say respectfully that we would all benefit – and in particular foreign affairs ministers – from opening a history book from time to time.”

The lunacy didn’t stop there. Not content with insulting the EU’s 27 countries, the government in London decided to whip up even more patriotic fervour by again trying to portray Russia as a threat to the United Kingdom.

In June 2018 the UK’s Sun newspaper carried the headline “Britain will send RAF Typhoon fighter jets to Iceland in bid to tackle Russian aggression” and since then Mr Williamson hasn’t altered his contention that “the Kremlin continues to challenge us in every domain.” (Williamson is the man who declared in March 2018 that “Frankly Russia should go away — it should shut up,” which was one of the most juvenile public utterances of recent years.)

It was reported on September 29 that Williamson was concerned about “growing Russian aggression ‘in our back yard’,” and that the Government was drawing up a “defence Arctic strategy” with 800 commandos being deployed to a new base in Norway. In an interview “Mr Williamson highlighted Russia’s re-opening of Soviet-era bases and ‘increased tempo’ of submarine activity as evidence that Britain needed to ‘demonstrate we’re there’ and ‘protect our interests’.”

Mr Williamson has not indicated what “interests” the United Kingdom could have in the Arctic region, where it has no territory.

The eight countries with territory north of the Arctic Circle are Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States. They have legitimate interests in the region which is twice the area of the US and Canada combined. But Britain has not one single claim to the Arctic. Not even a tenuous one like Iceland’s, which is based on the fact that although its mainland is not within the Arctic Circle, the Circle does pass through Grimsey Island, about 25 kilometres north of Iceland’s north coast. Britain’s Shetland Islands, its northernmost land, are 713 kilometres (443 miles) south of the Arctic Circle.

So why does the UK declare that it has “interests” in the Arctic and that the region is “in our back yard”? How can it possibly feel threatened?

The Arctic Institute observed in February 2018 that Russia’s “newer Arctic strategy papers focus on preventing smuggling, terrorism, and illegal immigration instead of balancing military power with NATO. These priorities suggest that Russia’s security aims in the Arctic have to do with safeguarding the Arctic as a strategic resource base... In general, the government-approved documents seem to have moved from an assertive tone that highlights Russia’s rivalry with NATO to a less abrasive tone based on securing economic development.”

And economic development is what it’s all about. On September 28 “it was reported that “a Danish-flagged cargo ship successfully passed through the Russian Arctic in a trial voyage showing that melting sea ice could potentially open a new trade route from Europe to east Asia.” It is obviously in the best economic interests of the European Union and Russia that the route be developed for commercial transit. To do this requires avoidance of conflict in the region.

So what’s your problem, Defence Minister Williamson?

In August Britain’s Parliamentary Defence Committee published On Thin Ice: UK Defence in the Arctic which concluded that “There is little doubt that the Arctic and the High North are seeing an increasing level of military activity. There is much greater divergence in the evidence we have taken on what the reasons behind this are, particularly in relation to Russia. One view is that there is no offensive intent behind Russia’s military build-up and that it is simply trying to regenerate military capacity in order to reassert sovereignty. The opposite view is that this is just one more part of Russia’s aggressive reassertion of great power competition.”

The Danish Government told the Committee that “Presently, Denmark sees no need for an increased military engagement or enhanced operative role for NATO in the Arctic”, and the Swedish Ambassador said “The Swedish Arctic is a limited part of Swedish territory. We are more a Baltic Sea nation than an Arctic nation... Obviously, the whole area around the Arctic, in particular the Kola Peninsula, is of strategic importance to Russia and they have a serious military presence there. We see all of that. Is that reason to call it militarisation of the Arctic?”

In January Reuters reported that China had notified its Arctic strategy, “pledging to work more closely with Moscow in particular to create an Arctic maritime counterpart — a ‘Polar Silk Road’ — to its ‘one belt, one road’ overland trade route to Europe. Both the Kremlin and Beijing have repeatedly stated that their ambitions are primarily commercial and environmental, not military.” It couldn’t be plainer that Russia and China want the Arctic to be a profitable mercantile trade route, while Russia wants to continue exploration for oil, gas and mineral deposits, which are important for its economy.

To develop the Arctic requires peace and stability. It would be impossible to reap the benefits of the new sea-route and potentially enormous energy and mineral riches if there were to be conflict in the North. It is obviously in the best interests of Russia and China that there be tranquillity rather than military confrontation.

But Britain’s Defence Minister insists there must be a military build-up by the UK in the Arctic “If we want to be protecting our interests in what is effectively our own back yard.” He is backed by the Parliament’s Defence Committee which states that “NATO’s renewed focus on the North Atlantic is welcome and the Government should be congratulated on the leadership the UK has shown on this issue.”

NATO is always on the lookout for excuses to indulge in military action (such as its nine–month blitz that destroyed Libya), and has announced it will conduct Arctic-focussed Exercise Trident Juncture in November, which Naval Today noted will be “one of the largest ever with 40,000 personnel, around 120 aircraft and as many as 70 ships converging in Norway.”

The NATO military alliance is preparing for war in the Arctic, and deliberately confronting Russia by conducting manoeuvres ever-closer to its borders. It had better be very careful.

World's Most Powerful Passport Revealed As Countries' Global Rankings Shift      Cache   Translate Page
Japan passport holders will find it easier than ever to travel the world, as their travel documents have just moved up in the global Henley Passport Index to take the top spot.

The Henley Passport Index is a ranking of all of the passports in the world based on the number of countries their holders can travel to visa-free.

Until now Japan had been sharing joint first place with Singapore, which gained visa-free access to Uzbekistan earlier this year bringing its total to 189 countries.

However, earlier this month Japan gained visa-free access to Myanmar bringing its total to 190 - once again taking it to the top spot.

It's still a milestone for both Japan and Singapore, as 2018 is the first year in the index's 13-year history that either of them has had the most powerful passport in the world.
Both are way ahead of the UK and US which share fifth place with Portugal, the Netherlands, Austria and Luxembourg - but it's worth noting that the top four spots are shared by 10 countries.

Experts had previously revealed that the UK ranking is unlikely to increase until there is certainty regarding Brexit.

Ásatrú Temple in Reykjavik, Iceland      Cache   Translate Page

Design rendering of the temple.

Of the many construction projects in development in Reykjavík, the most extraordinary has to be the sanctuary for the Ásatrú religion, the first pagan temple erected in Iceland in a millennium. The sanctuary will be the central hub of the Ásatrú society, a neopagan spiritual organization that has restored the ancient religion of the Vikings based in the pantheon of the Nordic gods.

Nordic paganism was suppressed in 999 with the rise of Christianity, but faith in the power of nature and supernatural entities persisted in the countryside and isolated areas. Today, a modern version of the ancient religion is on the rise. Founded on the first day of summer in 1972, the Ásatrú society (Ásatrúarfélagid in Icelandic) now has almost 5,000 active members and is the fastest growing religion in Iceland. And soon, it will have a dedicated structure for ceremonies and gatherings.

The Ásatrú temple—or more accurately, hall (or "hof" in Icelandic)—will honor the ancient gods such as Odin, Thor, Frigg, and Baldur. It is still under construction as of this writing and estimated to be completed by the fall of 2019. The sanctuary will be situated on the Öskjuhlíd hill, on a magnificent site surrounded by forests and a panoramic view of the sea. The area is considered sacred, as it is near an ensemble of three rocks believed to relate to the life and powers of Odin, the supreme god in the Nordic pantheon.

Designed by architect Magnús Jensson, the temple will be a monument to the cosmic forces of nature. It includes a spectacular dome aligned with astronomical events. The numbers three and nine, considered magical, have a special significance in the construction, according to the principles of sacred geometry. The interior of the temple will be a sober and majestic space hosting the statues of the deities, under the changing sunlight depending on the season and time of day. A commemorative memorial also stands at the entrance of the temple as a tribute to Sveinbjörn Beinteinsson, the founder of the society and first "Allsherjargodi," or highest priest.

Rituals, known as "blóts," will be held at the temple, from weddings to feasts to funerals. The most important rituals are the first day of summer (“Victory blót”) and the winter solstice (“Yule blót”). Though the structure is not yet complete, some rituals have already be held at the site, such as a ceremony to thank Mother Nature for the wood used for the construction.

The Ásatrú sanctuary will also be open and welcoming to other religions and institutions. Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, the current Allsherjargodi, stresses that Ásatrú is a religion of tolerance and peace. He plans to invite artists, musicians, and writers from across Iceland to the opening ceremony planned for 2019, is confident that the new temple will contribute to a more diverse and respectful society for the future Icelandic generations.

France vs Iceland: Probable Lineups, Prediction, Tactics, Team News & Key Stats | International Friendly      Cache   Translate Page
World champions France will play hosts to fellow European nation Iceland in a friendly on Thursday night, ahead of their UEFA Nations League assignment.
Paul Pogba back to friendly environment with France      Cache   Translate Page

PARIS — Far away seem the days when Paul Pogba was praised for the mature displays that helped France win the World Cup.

For the Manchester United midfielder, the euphoria that engulfed French players following their title lasted only a few weeks as he fell out with coach Jose Mourinho on his return to Old Trafford.

Pogba's relationship with Mourinho has been complicated since his return to United in 2016. But it reached its nadir last month when Pogba was stripped of the vice-captaincy at the club and then appeared to have a spat with Mourinho at practice.

Following a poor start to the season, United is under pressure and Pogba's future there seems uncertain amid reports he could leave.

Such concerns are irrelevant when Pogba plays with his national team, and the international break is likely to provide solace to a player regarded as indispensable by France coach Didier Deschamps.

Pogba joined his teammates at France's training ground ahead of Thursday's friendly game against Iceland. France, which beat Croatia in the World Cup final in July, hosts Germany in the UEFA Nations League on Oct. 16 at Stade de France.

"I don't want to interfere with the relationship that he, or any other player, could have with his coach," Deschamps said. "But given the situation of some (players) in their clubs, the breath of fresh air brought by the France team can do them good."

Often criticized for his laid-back approach, Pogba took more responsibilities in France during the World Cup and is now regarded as a proper team leader. Pogba is crediting Deschamps, who uses him on the pitch in a less restricted role than Mourinho, for his positive influence.

"I have a very good relationship with the coach, he speaks straight to me," Pogba said.

Here is a look at other talking points ahead of this week's international matches:

EMPTY STADIUM

The last time Croatia played England was in the packed Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow in a World Cup semifinal match. When they meet in the Croatian coastal city of Rijeka on Friday, there will be no fans.

Croatia is completing a stadium ban imposed by UEFA in 2015 when a swastika was painted on its field ahead of a game.

STRUGGLING ITALY

Italy is in desperate need of a victory at Poland on Sunday to avoid more embarrassment after failing to qualify for the last World Cup.

The Azzurri already sit last in its Nations League group with only one point and one goal scored from their opening two matches — a 1-1 draw with Poland and a 1-0 loss to Portugal.

Napoli's Lorenzo Insigne is being tapped for a "false 9" role amid a series of problems for the usual center forwards.

Mario Balotelli and Andrea Belotti have been dropped due to poor form while Ciro Immobile and Simone Zaza have struggled with the national team.

FALLEN CHAMPS REBUILD

Germany is still searching for its way back after its disastrous World Cup defense in Russia. Joachim Loew's squad drew 0-0 with France last month in a game in Munich that did little to assure fans it will be challenging again for titles anytime soon.

If anything, the game just highlighted the absence of Mesut Ozil, who retired from international football after feeling he was made the scapegoat for the German team's disappointing performances in Russia. While Loew wanted his side to display more defensive stability, it failed to convince going forward.

Loew experimented with five changes in the subsequent 2-1 friendly win over Peru, but the pressure is on to show real progress is being made in the games against the Netherlands and France.

REPLACING RONALDO

With Cristiano Ronaldo out again, Portugal's attack will be relying on Andre Silva, the Sevilla striker who has been thriving in the Spanish league.

Silva, playing on a loan from AC Milan, has seven goals in eight league matches so far. Silva scored Portugal's winner in the 1-0 win over Italy in the team's Nations League debut and is set to start in the match at Poland on Friday. Ronaldo hasn't played for Portugal since the World Cup and isn't expected to be back until next year.

DEPLETED SPAIN

Spain will be depleted when it hosts England on Monday with a chance to practically secure a spot in the Nations League's final four.

Some key players will be absent because of injuries, including Francisco "Isco" Alarcon, Dani Carvajal, Sergi Roberto and Diego Costa.

BEST OF THE REST

Russia returns to Sochi, where the World Cup host lost a quarterfinals penalty shootout against Croatia, to play Turkey on Sunday in Group 2 of League B. Russia first hosts Sweden in Kaliningrad on Thursday.

In B3, Bosnia-Herzegovina goes for a third straight when Northern Ireland visits on Monday.

In League C, Group 4 co-leaders Montenegro and Serbia meet in Podgorica on Thursday. The Balkan neighbors joined together as one team at the 2006 World Cup.

In League D, teams with two wins last month include Georgia which next hosts Andorra, Luxembourg playing at Belarus, and Macedonia hosting Liechtenstein.

One of the longest journeys in European soccer faces Azerbaijan — about 4,400 kilometers (2,750 miles) to play at the Faroe islands on Thursday.

Everton left-back Lucas Digne has been called up to the France squad to face Iceland and Germany in this month’s friendly encounters, just a few months after making the switch from Barcelona to Goodison Park. Digne’s performances have seen him earn a recall to the French national team after missing out of their World Cup-winning squad. The former PSG man last played for France in March this

Northern lights danced for peace      Cache   Translate Page
The northern lights almost managed to steal the spotlight from Yoko Ono’s Imagine Peace Tower, which was last night turned on for the 12th year in a row. As the tower is itself a giant spotlight, that was no small task. The Imagine Peace Tower is on Viðey island, just off Reykjavík’s north shore, and is turned on each year on John Lennon’s birthday, the 9th October. The Beatles star would have been 78 yesterday. The light shines every night until the 8th December, which is the anniversary of Lennon’s assassination.  The Aurora Borealis, or northern lights, have been particularly bright in recent days and although the activity is now decreasing, there is a good chance the lights will be back in force just under a month from now.  Sævar Helgi Bragasaon, the editor of Iceland’s leading astronomy website, told RÚV that the earth has been passing through a strong solar wind, which has been bouncing off the upper atmosphere and creating northern lights.  The solar wind came from a coronal hole on the sun. Such coronal holes are common and that the next one will probably cause extra-bright aurora 27 days from now: “There’s a good chance, although this is the sun, and it is always changing,” Sævar said.  Tourists flock to Iceland over the winter to see the northern lights and Sævar says they do so with good reason: Iceland is a particularly good place to see them. “We are right underneath the northern lights band which is a doughnut shaped belt around the Arctic. Iceland is pretty much always right underneath it,” Sævar says.  Filmmaker Þór Ægisson took the above video. The music is none other than Imagine, by John Lennon.

The Oxford Etymologist waxes emotional: a few rambling remarks on fear      Cache   Translate Page

It is well-known that words for abstract concepts at one time designated concrete things or actions. “Love,” “hatred,” “fear,” and the rest developed from much more tangible notions.  The words anger, anguish, and anxious provide convincing examples of this trend. All three are borrowings in English: the first from Scandinavian, the second from French, and the third from Latin. In Old Norse (that is, in Old Icelandic), angr and angra meant “to grieve” and “grief” respectively.

2018/19 Premier League: Review So Far      Cache   Translate Page
Week Seven Preview

How does each Premier League team look heading into the second international break of the season? We take a look:

City to get stronger with the return of de Bruyne
City haven’t looked their fluent best over the last few weeks and still sit atop the standings on goal difference. This tells you everything you need to know about their status as league favourites. Frighteningly enough, they haven’t really hit top gear yet and have still outscored everyone in the division as well as having the joint best defensive record. Kevin de Bruyne’s imminent return from injury could very well take them to another level entirely.

Star so far: Sergio Agüero
Despite many thinking that the Argentinian hasn’t quite lived up to expectations this season, consider the fact that he’s banged in five goals and claimed two assists. ‘Nuff said.

Chelsea firing under Sarri
Chelsea will be quietly confident heading into the festive period. Mauricio Sarri is under no real pressure to play his strongest XI in the Europa League which has allowed him to focus solely on the league. Jorginho has been a revelation since arriving from Napoli in the summer and sits comfortably at the top the completed passes standings on 853. Aymeric Laporte is second on 742.

Star so far: Eden Hazard
The little Belgian is easily the best player in the league at the moment and is courting very serious attention from struggling Real Madrid as a result. He’s been directly involved in 10 goals this season, scoring seven and assisting three.

Liverpool’s front three a cause for concern
Liverpool appear to have done a full 180 after last season. Their front three – Sadio Mane, Firmino and Mo Salah – have struggled to find the back of the net with any sort of consistency in the new campaign. Meanwhile, their defence has only conceded three goals in eight league outings – the joint best record in the league. That said, Jurgen Klopp’s men have just come out of a hellish run of fixtures which saw them face Chelsea twice, PSG, Napoli and Manchester City.

Star so far: Virgil van Dijk
Plenty of pundits and fans scoffed at the Dutch centre-half’s massive price tag, but he has repaid the faith shown in him by Klopp ten-fold. Still disagree? Consider the fact that Alisson hasn’t really been tested at all this season.

Arsenal fancy top four chances
The Gunners have been brilliant of late on the surface. Their front two appear to be scoring freely while the comically bad defending that was a hallmark of the side under Arsene Wenger’s later years appears to be a thing of the past. Still, you can’t help but think that some matches they’ve recently won against fodder like Cardiff, Newcastle and Watford could easily have ended in draws… or worse. There’s definitely still something of a soft underbelly to this side, but they’re certainly stronger under Unai Emery than they were under his French predecessor.

Star so far: Alexandre Lacazette
It seems obscene that Arsenal were seemingly willing to cut their losses on the French star last season. He’s really come to life in this campaign under Emery, finding the back of the net four times and assisting twice. Who can forget the absolute peach of a goal he scored against Everton a few weeks ago – more of that please!

The real test is yet to come for Spurs
Mauricio Pochettino can consider himself lucky that Tottenham’s mini injury crisis came at a time when they had to deal with fixtures against Brighton, Huddersfield and Cardiff City. They still had to win those games, however, and did so albeit in unconvincing fashion. Doing so, they’ve kept themselves in the title mix, although, a real title push will more than likely prove a bridge too far. The international break will definitely be welcomed in North London.

Star so far: Mauricio Pochettino
Yes, his penchant for leaving substitutions too late when his side are in a losing position is a problem, but he really has been fantastic this season. Don’t believe for a minute that he was happy with the board’s decision not to seriously pursue any of his transfer targets, along with the stress that came with the balls up that is the New White Hart Lane. Poch has taken all on the chin, made minimal fuss in front of the press and has got on with the job at hand. Jose Mourinho should take notes.

Eddie Howe: The miracle worker
Another man Mourinho can take notes from is Eddie Howe. The young Englishman has guided Bournemouth to sixth on the standings after eight games and can hold his head up high. His bright young squad have bought into his philosophy and play an attractive brand of football. This is all good and well when they smash teams like Watford 4-0 away from home, but can also prove to be a problem when goal-shy Burnley put four unanswered goals past them.

Star so far: Callum Wilson
The pacey Englishman has been a delight to watch this season and can consider himself extremely unlucky to be left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad. How Danny Welbeck – who features sporadically at best for Arsenal – gets picked ahead of Bournemouth’s three-goal and four-assist talisman is beyond me.

Wolves putting the Midlands back on the football map
With traditional Midlands giants Aston Villa, West Brom and Birmingham City all plying their trade in the Championship, Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves – with the help of a couple of Portuguese internationals – have been tearing up the Premier League. They’ve blown smaller teams out of the water and managed to take points off the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United. Let’s hope they carry on where they left off after the international break.

Star so far: Raul Jimenez
The Mexican swapped Benfica for Wolves at the start of the season in a loan move and hasn’t looked back. He’s Wolves’ top assist-maker (3) and top scorer (2) so far this season and looks to be the complete package up front.

Watford crash back down to earth
The Hornets made a blistering start to their 2018/19 campaign with whispers of a potential Leicester City-esque feat on the cards. Those whispers have been hushed altogether after recent league defeats against Manchester United, Arsenal and Bournemouth. The international break came at the perfect time for Javi Garcia’s men, who will use the time to regroup before going again in two weeks.

Star so far: Jose Holebas
This was probably one of the more difficult ones to call, but Holebas just shades it. The Greek international has been brilliant this season, claiming four assists and a goal from - all the more impressive when you consider he plays as a fullback.

Something has to give at Old Trafford
To say that Manchester United are in crisis is an understatement. Yes, they managed to claw their way back from 2-0 down to beat Newcastle 3-2 at Old Trafford last week. But a team brimming with this much talent should never have been in that position in the first place, especially against the worst Newcastle team we've seen in years. Dropped points against Brighton, West Ham, Tottenham and Wolves see the fallen giants of English football languishing in eighth place. Oh, and only the bottom three have poorer defensive records this season. Let’s not even get started on the dog show that is Mourinho vs the players/press/board/fans.

Star so far: Luke Shaw
Having seemingly been frozen out by Mourinho on several occasions, the rotund left-back has been a picture of consistency this season. The former Southampton man has exuded professionalism where others in the club have made veiled attacks on management/players in the press.

Leicester ambling toward mid-table mediocracy
That title-winning campaign of 2016/17 seems a distant memory now for the Foxes. They’re certainly safe from relegation but don’t really seem to be good enough to compete for the European places. As much is evidenced in their position on the log. Three of their four wins have come against teams in the bottom quarter of the table. Interesting times ahead.

Star so far: James Maddison
Maddison has made the step up from the Championship with ease and has earned himself an England call-up for his efforts. He’s notched two goals and three assists so far this season and looks well on his way to stardom.

Stagnant Toffees searching for rhythm
Everton fans have been left frustrated with yet another disappointing league start. Their position on the table (11th) looks far worse when you consider that they’ve only played one team in the top six so far. This is simply not good enough for a squad that has been invested in so heavily over the past two seasons.

Star so far: Gylfi Sigurdsson
This award would have gone to Richarlison but for his stupid red card against Bournemouth. The Icelandic international has been in sublime form this season bagging four goals and an assist. His delightful Cruyff Turn and subsequent piledriver against Leicester is definitely an early contender for goal of the season.

Burnley finding their feet
Burnley dealt with a terrible start to the season as Sean Dyche’s men struggled to balance Europa League commitments with their domestic efforts. Fortunately, elimination from Europe in the qualifying stages has seen the side experience an upturn in fortunes. They’ve picked up seven points from their last three games and appear to be on the mend.

Star so far: Johann Berg Gudmundsson
The Icelandic midfielder has enjoyed a fine start to the campaign and is clearly relishing pulling the strings in the midfield. He’s bagged four assists this season and found the net on one occasion.

Plenty to smile about for Brighton fans
Yes they’re 13th on the standings, but they’ve already dealt with Manchester City, Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester United. So eight points in eight games is hardly the worst record in the world. They will, however, be required to start picking up points now going forward they face off against the division’s smaller teams.

Star so far: Glenn Murray
Glenn Murray has been sensational this season, scoring five goals in the first eight matches of the season. He’s shone brighter than some of his more technically gifted teammates – we’re looking at you Anthony Knockaert and Pascal Groß. He’s certainly one who’ll be on Gareth Southgate’s radar for the next few months- especially if there are injuries to some of the younger forwards.

Eagles yet to get off the ground
Crystal Palace fans ought to be pretty worried about their survival chances off the back of early-season results. They’ve not really had to deal with any of the top sides with the exception of Liverpool. Furthermore, they’ve only managed five goals in eight matches and have a very tough run of league fixtures after the international break which reads: Everton, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United.

Star so far: Wilfried Zaha
It comes as no surprise that Zaha has been Palace’s best performer. The winger recently signed a new deal at the club but will almost certainly leave for a bigger side at the end of the season. He’s been involved in four of Palace’s five league goals this season, scoring three and assisting one.

West Ham have put their slow start behind them
There were massive question marks surrounding Manuel Pellegrini after the Hammers lost their first four games of the season. Since their 1-0 defeat against Wolves in mid-September, they’ve managed wins against Everton, Manchester United as well as a draw against Chelsea. This run was soured somewhat by a 1-0 away defeat against Brighton, but things certainly are looking up.

Star so far: Marko Arnautovic
The Austrian is one of two or three truly world class players on the books at West Ham. The big centre-forward has outshone them all, though scoring four goals and bagging an assist. His goals could well see the Hammers pushing of a Europa League spot come the end of the season.

Saints sleep-walking toward relegation
Southampton have not been good this season and might just survive relegation because Huddersfield, Newcastle and Cardiff are so much worse off. Mark Hughes has battled to get the best out of a squad that has consistently had its best players sold over the last few seasons – a boardroom tactic that appears to have badly affected the results on the pitch.

Star so far: Danny Ings
The one bright light in an otherwise poor squad has been Danny Ings. The centre-forward, who is on loan from Liverpool, has been relishing the playing time that he simply wasn’t afforded on Merseyside. He’s banged in three goals this season and is well on his way to resurrecting a career that appeared to be stagnating.

Fulham struggling despite encouraging summer
The Cottagers spent just under 100 million pounds in the summer bringing in the likes of Jean Michael Seri, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Alfie Mawson as well as securing to players like Andre Schurrle on loan. So far it just hasn’t clicked with the side leaking goals at an alarming rate. They were hammered 5-1 at home by Arsenal just before the international break. Something has to change.

Star so far: Aleksandar Mitrovic
The big Serbian looks a new player since leaving Newcastle in the summer. He appears to have reined in his temper to some extent and has bagged five goals. A proper old-school number 9, he’ll bully plenty of centre-halves this season and should get upward of 15 goals if he can stay injury-free.

Terriers lacking bite
It was always going to be difficult to repeat the heroics of last season, but David Wagner won’t want his Terriers to go back down into the Championship with little more than a whimper. They continue to drop points against teams like Cardiff and Crystal Palace while getting rolled over by the Manchester Cities of the league. Relegation looks almost certain.

Star so far: Philip Billing
The young Danish midfielder has been Terrier-like (haha) in his performances this season doing his best to shield a back four who look all at sea at the minute. He’s completed more tackles per game than any of his teammates and sits third in terms of interceptions which highlights to excellent work he’s doing. Oh, he’s also scored one of their four goals.

Newcastle staring down the barrel
It’s pretty sad to see the state that Newcastle United finds itself in, although it’s hardly surprising when you consider the lack of investment from Mike Ashley. They’ve got world class supporters, world-class facilities and a manager who has done it all, but they simply can’t compete with such a bang average squad.

Star so far: Jonjo Shelvey
The former Liverpool midfielder – alongside Jamaal Lascelles – is probably the only player who looks completely at home in this division. On average, he’s completed 52.6 passes per game (20 more than the next best Newcastle player. He’s also averaged 2.6 key passes per game. His creativity and tenacity will be needed if Newcastle are to avoid the drop to the Championship.

No surprises at the bottom of the pile
The most memorable thing to come out of Cardiff City’s season so far were Neil Warnock’s comments about Sol Bamba being a better player than Virgil van Dijk. Warnock’s charges have only managed to find the back of the net four times in eight games and have conceded 17 times. They’re currently 2/9 favourites to be relegated which should tell you everything you need to know.

Star so far: Sol Bamba
The big Ivorian has probably been the pick of Cardiff’s players so far. He’s no van Dijk but he has provided a calming influence at times. There also isn’t really anyone else who has stood out at all to be honest.

Selected Fixtures Preview (12-16 Oct 2018)

The UEFA Nations League kicks off on Thursday the 11th of October 2018 with some exciting matches to look forward to.

Club football takes a break once again as the UEFA Nations League fixtures come thick and fast. This weekend throws a few blockbusters our way with 2018 World Cup finalists, Croatia, locking horns with England, while high-flying Belgium square off with Switzerland.

Meanwhile, a Ronaldo-less Portugal face an Italy side hoping to bounce back under Roberto Mancini. The tie between Netherlands and Germany also promises to be mouth-watering, while we close proceedings with Spain taking on England in the Three Lions’ second UEFA Nations League encounter this week.

Bet Now on Soccer

Friday 12 October

Belgium 9/20
Draw 33/10
Switzerland 52/10
Belgium will look to do what is expected of them this Friday and brush aside Switzerland. Since losing to France in the semi-finals of the World Cup, Belgium have endured a three-game winning streak, beating England to finish third in the world, and cruising past Scotland and Iceland. They’ve kept three clean sheets in as many games in that run and with Eden Hazard in the form of his life, they should have no troubles.

Switzerland hammered Iceland 6-0 in their Nations League opener, but suffered defeat in Wembley against England a few days later. Belgium should have too much class for the Swiss here – get on at 9/20.

Croatia 16/10
Draw 2/1
England 18/10
After an impressive World Cup display in Russia, Croatia seem to have suffered somewhat of a setback, or perhaps it was champagne hangovers as the Croats remain winless since reaching the final, and come off the back of a 6-0 demolition against Spain. England also lost their encounter to Spain – a 2-1 defeat at Wembley, although they bounced back in a friendly against Switzerland to regain that winning feeling.

Jadon Sancho of Borussia Dortmund has looked sharp so far this season, so too has Ross Barkley for Chelsea, but the Three Lions will need Harry Kane to get on the scoresheet and rebuild some of his confidence, which seems to have taken a dip of late. My money is on Over 2.5 Goals here at 12/10.

Austria 5/10
Draw 29/10
Northern Ireland 57/10
Austria hope to get their Nations League campaign back on track when they host Northern Ireland, who have struggled in recent months, especially away from home, where they have failed to score in four outings.

At home, Austria have been a joy to watch. They beat Germany, Sweden and Russia, losing just once in 11 encounters, a 3-0 drubbing against Brazil. Marko Arnautovic has been lively this season and has found new life in his new striking role which was first deployed at club level. At 5/10, Austria should pick up their first win in the Nations League.

Saturday 13 October

Netherlands 47/20
Draw 51/20
Germany 21/20
Netherlands will be hoping for a turnaround performance when they face 2014 world champions, Germany, after losing their Nations League opener against current world champions, France. The Dutch have been a team on the decline for many years, but with the young guns firing up front, Ronald Koeman’s men will feel they have a chance.

Germany have also opted to go with a few youngsters, but also have the experience of Toni Kroos, Manuel Neuer, Mats Hummels and Thomas Muller to call upon. The Germans drew their first encounter, 0-0 against France, but should come out on top against so-called lesser opposition. Back the away win here at 21/20.

Republic of Ireland 21/10
Draw 39/20
Denmark 29/20
Martin O'Neill will be hoping to inspire his Irish charges when they prepare to host Denmark in the UEFA Nations League. The Republic of Ireland have won just once in their last seven matches and suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat at home against this weekend’s opponents, Denmark.

The Danes were impressive in the World Cup and with Kasper Schmeichel and Christian Eriksen at their best, it would take something special for Denmark to come out second best. Back the visitors to come out on top here, just as they did last year in a 5-1 drubbing.

Sunday 14 October

Russia 11/10
Draw 39/20
Turkey 29/10
Russia did a fantastic job in hosting one of the most memorable FIFA World Cups earlier this year, but the show must go on, with competitive football coming thick and fast for Russia. But since they crashed out of the World Cup, Russia went on to beat their opponents, Turkey, 2-1 away from home and then Czech Republic 5-1 in a friendly.

The Turks started their Nations League off with a defeat against Russia, but picked things up away from home as they grinded out a 3-2 win in Sweden. They’re unbeaten in their last four matches and will prove to be no pushovers. Back a share of the spoils here.

Poland 2/1
Draw 21/10
Italy 27/20

After a dismal World Cup showing in Russia, Poland seem to have found their rhythm and are now unbeaten in three matches. They closed their campaign with a 1-0 win over Japan, then later went on to draw with Italy and the Republic of Ireland last month. Italy head into the international break with a four-game winless run, but could rectify things in a friendly against Ukraine before they face Poland.

Away from Italy, Roberto Mancini’s men have been dreadful, failing to win in their last five matches, losing four times. Their young defence hasn’t managed to cope with the pressure of facing the big guns, and I could certainly see this going wrong for the 2006 world champions. Back Poland here at a valuable 18/10.

Monday 15 October

Iceland 34/10
Draw 23/10
Switzerland 17/20
Things are not looking good for the Icelandic Vikings as they sit rooted to the foot of Group 2 in League A, losing both their opening two matches (6-0 away to Switzerland and 3-0 at home to Belgium). At the time of writing, Iceland are winless in nine matches, including a winless run in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Switzerland play Belgium before they face Iceland, but will be confident heading into this game, despite what might happen on Friday. The Swiss bulldozed their way past Iceland before and should do enough to grind another victory. Get on the away win here.

Spain 9/10
Draw 49/20
England 3/1
After a disappointing World Cup, Spain appointed Luis Enrique and as expected, the former Barcelona mentor has taken the 2010 world champions forward. They beat England at Wembley last month and smashed six past Croatia a few days later.

Gareth Southgate has set one eye on Euro 2020 preparations as the English boss opted to call a few new faces to the national team, including Leicester City’s James Maddison. Enrique has also called up a few youngsters, and in Spain, I simply give England no chance here. Back the home side.

Tuesday 16 October

France 1/1
Draw 51/20
Germany 51/20
World champions, France, have simply been untouchable in the last year, enduring a 13-game unbeaten run, including success at the FIFA World Cup. Germany did manage to hold France after the World Cup, but looking at Joachim Low’s team selected, they could fall short against the mighty Les Bleus.

Kylian Mbappe has been phenomenal this season, while N’Golo Kante and Antoine Griezmann have also looked sharp. It will certainly be a cagey affair, but France are backed to win.

TREBLE TIPPED @ 5/1
Belgium Win 9/20
Austria Win 5/10
Poland Win 18/10

Potato chips that taste like Christmas trees      Cache   Translate Page

British grocer Iceland (yes, that's really its name) is not messing around with "autumn" and "pumpkin spice." How pedestrian! They're headed straight for the taste of December 25th with their "Luxury Christmas Tree Flavour Salted Hand-Cooked Crisps." Yup, they've made potato chips that taste like pine trees.

What gives the chips, sorry crisps, that distinctive Christmas tree flavor? Pine salt and pine oil, according to the ingredients.

A bag costs just £1 (approx. $1.30) but it's only available in the UK (for now).

Summer signing reveals what he told one Everton player after his display against Leicester - originally posted on Sportslens.com

Gylfi Sigurdsson scored a terrific goal against Leicester City and for the first time since his arrival from Swansea City, he looked the player for whom Everton dished out £45 million. The Iceland international endured a difficult debut season at Goodison Park but he is finally justifying his price tag under Marco Silva. Silva has reinstated him in his favoured number ten role, and the 29-year-old has been reminding everyone why Everton made him their record signing. He scored twice against Fulham and then followed it up with a stunning effort against Leicester City on Saturday. Sigurdsson’s performance has left everyone drooling

Everton man would surely have won World Cup had he taken summer decision earlier - originally posted on Sportslens.com

Everton left-back Lucas Digne has been called up to the France squad to face Iceland and Germany in this month’s friendly encounters, just a few months after making the switch from Barcelona to Goodison Park. The 25-year-old has been in fine form since arriving the Merseyside club in August for £18million, featuring in seven games across all competitions and making the left-back spot his on a permanent basis. Digne’s performances have seen him earn a recall to the French national team after missing out of their World Cup-winning squad. The former PSG man last played for France in March this

The best travel destinations within 5 hours of New York City      Cache   Translate Page

Charleston South Carolina

  • You may be looking to escape New York City for a weekend without compromising your wallet or limited vacation days.
  • There are quick weekend getaways, like Bermuda or Tulum, that you can visit from New York City in five hours or less.
  • Here are the best destinations within five hours of New York City.

Summer may be over, but that doesn't mean you can't book a vacation before the winter doldrums hit.

It doesn't have to mean taking a two-week trip to the Greek islands — if your direct flight in short enough, a four-day weekend can feel like a complete getaway. In four days, you can enter full vacation mode without spending a fortune on lodging while using only two vacation days.

Plus, a short flight won't take too much time away from beaching, lounging, sightseeing, and eating your way through your chosen destination.

One of the biggest hurdles for those with time constraints is deciding where to go. While I'm grateful for the abundance of travel resources out there on the internet, sometimes the options are just too overwhelming. I could spend a full week on the Kayak Explore function and never actually book a ticket thanks to overstimulation and indecision.

Based on your time frame, you've got to just pick a part of the world that makes sense from an itinerary perspective and narrow down your options from there. For those in the Northeast, we've pulled together 10 of the best destinations within a five-hour direct flight from New York City.

DON'T MISS: 5 easy tips that could save you hundreds when booking vacation rentals

1. Bermuda

For New Yorkers, Bermuda is arguably the closest tropical destination. It's a 2-1/2-hour direct flight from New York, with round-trip tickets starting at about $280. Consisting of more than 150 islands, Bermuda is only about 650 miles off the coast of North Carolina. (Just keep hurricane season, June to November, in mind when you book.)

2. Iceland

You can sometimes book a nonstop flight to Reykjavik for under $300. OK, the flight actually lasts closer to 5 1/2 hours, but the bit of extra flight time can get you all the way to the home of the Blue Lagoon and quite a few "Game of Thrones" filming locations. Five hours seems minor when you consider that it gets you all the way to the land of aurora borealis.

3. Miami

You don't need to leave the country for a tropical getaway. With incredible food options and culture galore, Miami is so much more than just beaches and nightlife. Plus, three-hour direct flights start at $250.
