Sir Gertie - Male African Grey (Advertigo)      Cache   Translate Page
Sir Gertie the Congo African Grey is a Senior who has had a rough past. Upon his vet visit we found that his left foot was fractured in many places and left untreated and his right foot has several missing toes. He is unable to fully spread his wings and my vet advised it may be due to him being in a very small cage for most of his life. As you can see he is also mostly plucked and he is completely blind in eye but can see a little through his nice eye. Sir Gertie is a prime example of how animals forgive humans even after years of neglect. When we walk into the room we hear him say in a muffled voice Hellllooo . He has got to the point here where he loves to be held and he loves to be around us. Since he is a senior and we are not sure how many more years he has (we really do not know his actual age) we feel he will live a happier life in a home where he will have more -on- attion than we are able to offer here. He warms up to new people fairly quickly.

Francesco Spinelli to be canonized after healing of a newborn in DR Congo      Cache   Translate Page

Vatican City, Oct 9, 2018 / 05:01 pm (ACI Prensa).- Among those being canonized on Sunday are Fr. Franceso Spinelli, a diocesan priest through whose intercession a newborn was saved from death in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The child was born April 25, 2007 at a hospital in Kinshasa served by the Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament

The newborn and his mother were discharged three days after the baby was born. But on her way  home, the mom tripped and instinctively clutched the baby to herself, but so hard that that she induced a severe hemorrhage.

Returning to the hospital, the doctors tried to help him for 45 minutes. In order to save him they had to give him an emergency blood transfusion. But the baby's condition was so bad that his veins were thinning, which made the procedure impossible.

Given the lack of technology at the hospital and the impossibility of quickly transferring him to another hospital, the doctors gave the baby up for dead.

While this was going on, Sister Adeline, the Adoration sister in charge of the hospital's maternity unit, noted the serious condition of the baby and asked her community to pray that the child would survive.

The superior of the congregation, Sister Antonietta Musoni, asked the intercession of Fr. Spinelli and they began to prayer a novena to him.

Sister Adeline placed a holy card of Fr. Spinelli under the baby's sheets and when the doctors made a final effort they miraculously found a vein just as big as an adult's to give the blood transfusion.

With just three or four drops of blood the baby began to kick and cry. He completely recovered in a few hours.

The parents, realizing the miracle obtained through the intercession of the founding father of the Institute of the Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament, changed the name of their son from Ambrosio María Díaz to Francisco María Spinelli Díaz.

The child has grown up to be healthy, with no after-effects from that episode. Medical exams performed on the child during the process of investigating Fr. Spinelli's cause demonstrated his perfect state of health.

Brief Biography

Francesco Spinelli was born in Milan April 14, 1853. He entered the seminary at Bergamo and was ordained a priest Oct. 17, 1875.

He began his apostolate educating the poor and at the same time he served as a seminary professor, spiritual director, and counselor for several women's religious communities.

In 1882, Fr. Spinelli met Caterina Comensoli, with whom he would found the Institute of the Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament.

The sisters dedicated themselves to Eucharistic adoration day and night which inspired their service to the poor and suffering.

Due to several setbacks,  Fr. Spinelli  transferred from the Diocese of Bergamo to the Diocese of Cremona where he continued to lead the Adoration Institute in Rivolta d'Adda/

The priest died Feb. 6, 1913, and was buried in the church of the Adoration Sisters in Rivolta d'Adda. At that time, the institution had founded 68 communities in different countries.

Currently, the institute has around 250 communities in Italy, Congo, Senegal, Cameroon, Colombia, and Argentina. Their ministries include caring for people with HIV, orphans, drug addicts, and prisoners.

Fr. Spinelli was beatified by St. John Paul II June 21, 1992 at the Marian Shrine of Caravaggio.

He will be beatified Oct. 14 at the Vatican along with Paul VI, Bshop of Rome from 1963 to 1978; Oscar Romero, a martyr who was Archbishop of San Salvador from 1977 to 1980; Vincenzo Romano, a diocesan priest from Torre de Greco in Italy; Maria Caterina Kasper, a German nun and founder of the Institute of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ; and Nazaria Ignazia of Saint Teresa of Jesus, founder of the Congregation of the Misioneras Cruzadas de la Iglesia Sisters.

Press Releases: Eliminate, Neutralize, and Disrupt (END) Wildlife Trafficking Report 2018      Cache   Translate Page
Media Note
Office of the Spokesperson
Washington, DC
October 9, 2018

Today the U.S. Department of State submitted the second annual report to Congress as required by the Eliminate, Neutralize, and Disrupt Wildlife Trafficking Act of 2016 (the END Wildlife Trafficking Act).

Wildlife trafficking is a serious transnational crime that threatens security, economic prosperity, the rule of law, long-standing conservation efforts, and human health. In Executive Order 13773, President Trump called for a comprehensive and decisive approach to dismantle organized crime syndicates, specifically recognizing the connection between wildlife trafficking and transnational organized criminal networks. The United States government’s three-pronged approach to combating wildlife trafficking—strengthening law enforcement, reducing demand, and building international cooperation—deprives criminals of a key source of financing, reducing the criminal threat posed to U.S. citizens.

The END Wildlife Trafficking Act directs the Secretary of State, in consultation with the Secretaries of the Interior and Commerce, to submit to Congress a report that lists Focus Countries and Countries of Concern, as defined in the Act. Each Focus Country is a major source, transit point, or consumer of wildlife trafficking products or their derivatives. Identification as a Focus Country is neither a positive nor a negative designation. Many Focus Countries have taken significant steps to combat wildlife trafficking, including in partnership with the United States. A Country of Concern is defined as a Focus Country whose government has actively engaged in or knowingly profited from the trafficking of endangered or threatened species. The United States looks forward to continuing dialogue with both Focus Countries and Countries of Concern to thwart transnational organized crime engaged in wildlife trafficking.

The 2018 Focus Countries are Bangladesh, Brazil, Burma, Cambodia, Cameroon, China, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Laos, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mexico, Mozambique, Nigeria, Philippines, Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam. The 2018 Countries of Concern are Madagascar, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Laos.

GROSSMONT HEALTHCARE DISTRICT CONTINUES TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS SERVING HOMELESS, REFUGEE POPULATIONS      Cache   Translate Page

East County News Service

October 9, 2018 (La Mesa) – The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD) is continuing its support of community organizations that assist specialized populations in the East Region, including homeless and refugee groups, with recent grants to Crisis House and Survivors of Torture International.

A $6,500 grant to Crisis House will help the El Cajon-based organization present Project Homeless Connect-East County (PHC), a one-day event that will provide services to homeless individuals and families. Launched in 2013, the collaborative effort involves more than 35 organizations representing private and public enterprises, religious, civic and government agencies, as well as more than 100 individual volunteers. Free services provided at PHC include haircuts, clothing, identification paperwork, legal help, medical checkups, pastoral counseling, addiction treatment, and housing and employment assistance.

Over the past five years, PHC attendance has increased. Held in April, the 2018 PHC served 213 individuals, including 21 children. Attendance in 2018 was 27 percent higher compared to the previous year. The next PHC is scheduled for April 12, 2019, at the Ronald Reagan Community Center in El Cajon. Founded in 1970, Crisis House offers comprehensive housing and social services for the region's homeless and low-income populations.

“With the help of the Grossmont Healthcare District, we will have the opportunity to again make health care accessible and provide health-related services to an underserved and high-risk population,” said Mary Case, executive director, Crisis House. “Our goal with PHC is to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty and make it easy for homeless individuals and families to access necessary services for rebuilding their lives and remaining safe, healthy and self-sufficient.”

According to Case, Crisis House anticipates that next year’s event will deliver services to as many as 225 unsheltered homeless men, women and children. Case also indicated that the organization wants to expand services by making both vision and dental available to those who attend the event.

The GHD board also recently approved a $2,500 sponsorship to the Survivors of Torture International’s eighth annual fundraising “Helping Survivors Heal” luncheon held Thursday, Sept. 20 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Mission Valley.

The San Diego nonprofit assists adult and child refugees and asylum seekers who have fled from more than 80 countries where political torture and ethnic cleansing are common threats. Founded in 1997, Survivors of Torture offers a free holistic program that includes medical, dental, psychiatric, psychological and other social services, as well as employment, education and legal referrals. Top home countries of origin among clients include Iraq, Iran, Syria, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mexico.

“Our mission is to facilitate the healing of survivors and their families and advocate for the abolition of torture,” said Kathi Anderson, executive director, Survivors of Torture. “We are grateful for the support from the Grossmont Healthcare District since our goal is to cover 100 percent of luncheon costs with sponsorship donations, so proceeds raised at the luncheon will go towards programs and services.”

GHD, formed in 1952 to build Grossmont Hospital, is a public agency that owns the hospital’s buildings and property on behalf of local taxpayers. Since 1991, GHD has leased the hospital’s operations and management to Sharp HealthCare via a public-private partnership. The District is governed by a five-member board of directors, each elected to four-year terms, who represent more than 500,000 people residing within the District's 750 square miles in San Diego's East County. For more information about GHD, visit www.grossmonthealthcare.org.

IOC: Refugee Team to Take Part at Tokyo 2020 Olympics      Cache   Translate Page
Refugees will take part in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Tuesday said it would form a refugee team for the second consecutive Summer Games. IOC President Thomas Bach asked members of the Olympic body at its session in Buenos Aires to support the creation of a refugee team, along the lines of the one that competed at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. The members responded with applause. "So you have created the refugee Olympic team, Tokyo 2020," Bach said. The German said the IOC had already identified a pool of more than 50 refugee athletes and it was necessary to keep the world aware of the plight of the tens of millions of refugees around the world. "There is one unfortunate reason for the creation of this team," Bach told a news conference. "This is the fact that the reasons we created the first ever team still persist. We have altogether 68.5 million refugees in this world." "Through sport we want to make a contribution to keep the world aware of this problem and this challenge and that it does not disappear from the conscience of the world, and send another signal of hope to these refugees." There were no details yet on the final size or makeup of the team but Bach said the pool of potential athletes for the team could grow more. "Last time (for Rio) we were under very high time pressure. Now we have two years. We have already taken precaution... and we have a pool of athletes in place. Already now we're supporting 51 or 52 refugee athletes who we have identified," Bach said. "This pool can still grow in the run-up to Tokyo 2020. It is too early to say how many will finally make it." The IOC unveiled its first team of refugees in an effort to raise awareness of the issue and it was one of the feel-good stories of the Rio Olympics. The 10-member team from Syria, Congo, Ethiopia and South Sudan hogged the spotlight after marching as the penultimate team before host nation Brazil in the Opening Ceremony at the Olympic stadium. The athletes took part in athletics, swimming and judo. The IOC has continued supporting these athletes, some of whom attended the IOC session in the Argentine capital. The IOC had said last year it was considering forming such a team again for the Tokyo Games and has continued to support the athletes who took part in Rio. "I am delighted that this tradition is to continue in Tokyo," said United Nations High Commissioner for refugees Filippo Grandi in a statement. "Giving these exceptional young people the opportunity to compete at the very highest levels is admirable."

Hunting a shadowy armed militia in DR Congo's 'triangle of death'      Cache   Translate Page
BENI, DR Congo: "I am always anticipating an attack," says South African soldier Maijeke of how it feels to be in DR Congo's "triangle of death", where he is part of a UN peacekeeping force helping the Congolese army hunt down a militia group that is slaughtering civilians.

There has been a recent spike in violence in this volatile eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo blamed on the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a shadowy armed group rooted in Ugandan Islamism.

Just last week, six civilians were killed during a night attack in the city of Beni by the ADF, which has no known leader and whose ideology and motives remain unclear.

AFP photojournalist John Wessels travelled for three days with 30 soldiers from the UN mission Monusco and the Congolese army to the troubled North Kivu province, where the ADF has killed hundreds of civilians since 2014.

On Friday, after reports of heavy mortar and machine gun fire, the troops headed to the town of Oicha, north of Beni and near the border with Uganda.

The town's residents greeted them by throwing stones.

"The civilians get frustrated with us and Monusco, sometimes we arrive late, we have to fight harder to help the community change its mind about us," one of the Congolese soldiers said on the condition of anonymity.

Several homes in Oicha had been looted by ADF members, who melt back into the jungle after raids and attacks.

While the troops inspected the looted homes, deafening machine gunfire rang out from the jungle.

It seemed to be coming from near the town of Mbau, where 20 civilians were shot dead by the ADF in May.

The troops are based outside Oicha, where the blue helmets sleep uneasily — the ADF killed 15 Tanzanian peacekeepers in December in the deadliest attack on UN forces in 24 years.

And the ADF, which is thought to have killed a total of more than 700 civilians over the last four years, regularly attacks Congolese army bases for weapons, ammunition and medical supplies.

'Heartbreaking'

"This is my fourth deployment in the DRC, my first was in 2006," said UN peacekeeper Maijeke.

"This is the most intense deployment for me, I am always anticipating an attack," he added..

"The biggest difference this time is the escalation in the killings of civilians, this is heartbreaking for me, a serious concern."

When the ADF killed 20 civilians in Beni in Sept, the locals condemned the failures of the Congolese army and the UN mission.

However Monusco maintains its intervention has prevented even greater carnage.

In the area known as the "triangle of death" between Beni, Mbau and Kamango, the troops face an enemy that knows every secret of the dense jungle and likely has informants in many communities.

On Saturday, the troops headed to the scene of a particularly violent ADF onslaught a few days earlier.

Members of the militia were said to have used two women as human shields during a shootout with Congolese troops that lasted four hours. Both women were killed.

Everything seemed quiet when the troops arrived, except for the sporadic sound of gunfire.

The next day, Sunday, gunshots rang out again — this time close to their base. The soldiers scrambled to put on their gear, but the jungle quietened down once their attention was turned to it.

What do they want?

Over three days hunting the ADF, some of the mystery surrounding them dissipated.

It was clear they are well-equipped with heavy weapons and well organised. Their guerrilla tactics of sudden, brutal assaults are usually to gain strategic positions, or needed supplies.

But much remains unknown. How many are they? Who is in charge? Who is arming them?

And most of all, what is their goal?

Both Uganda and the DRC insist they have a jihadist motive, but many observers say this is too simplistic and there has been no proven link with the global jihadist underground.

The ADF started out in 1989 with the aim of overthrowing Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni, who was seen as hostile to Muslims. But it went on to absorb other rebel factions into its ranks and started carrying out attacks in 1995.

Forced westwards by the Ugandan army, the group relocated most of its activities to DRC, finding a lucrative niche in the vast central African country's lawless, resource-rich east.

For Maijeke, the most important thing is ending the violence.

"There has to be a dialogue between the FARDC (Congolese army) and the ADF," he says.

"The fighting is at the expense of innocent civilians — mouths must finish this conflict, not bullets". — AFP

World's Most Powerful Passport Revealed As Countries' Global Rankings Shift      Cache   Translate Page
Japan passport holders will find it easier than ever to travel the world, as their travel documents have just moved up in the global Henley Passport Index to take the top spot.

The Henley Passport Index is a ranking of all of the passports in the world based on the number of countries their holders can travel to visa-free.

Until now Japan had been sharing joint first place with Singapore, which gained visa-free access to Uzbekistan earlier this year bringing its total to 189 countries.

However, earlier this month Japan gained visa-free access to Myanmar bringing its total to 190 - once again taking it to the top spot.

It's still a milestone for both Japan and Singapore, as 2018 is the first year in the index's 13-year history that either of them has had the most powerful passport in the world.
Both are way ahead of the UK and US which share fifth place with Portugal, the Netherlands, Austria and Luxembourg - but it's worth noting that the top four spots are shared by 10 countries.

Experts had previously revealed that the UK ranking is unlikely to increase until there is certainty regarding Brexit.

Source: UN High Commissioner for Refugees
Country: Afghanistan, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, South Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic, World

Bill and Melinda Gates are backing a new tool that lets you type in any illness symptoms and learn what's ailing you      Cache   Translate Page

bill gates melinda gates

  • A symptom-checking tool called Ada Health is launching a new partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
  • On Wednesday, the startup will begin working with the Gates Foundation to study how the tool could support healthcare workers in rural parts of the world.
  • Ada Health is already one of the most popular medical apps in over 130 countries.

Getting to the doctor when you're not feeling well is no easy task no matter where you live. But in many parts of the world, there are bigger problems than high costs and long wait times.

For roughly half the globe's population, basic healthcare is a luxury that's too expensive to get. So Ada Health, a tool that lets you type in your symptoms to learn what's causing them, is launching a new initiative with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to extend the reach of its services.

The Ada app is designed to tell you what's causing your symptoms with more accurate results than you'd get from a Google search. Users open the app, enter their age and gender, and type in a symptom like pain or a cough. Then an AI-powered bot asks several questions, like what makes the symptom worse, and tells you the most likely culprit.

Starting today, Ada is working with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to study how the platform can be used to support healthcare workers in rural parts of several countries in East and Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, South America, and India.

The project is part of Ada's new Global Health Initiative, a series of projects focused on improving access to primary care in underserved populations across the world. The effort will involve work with local governments, NGOs and other partners as well.

"The reason we’re doing this is the same reason why we started Ada in the first place: it’s about giving people better access to quality healthcare," Daniel Nathrath, CEO and co-founder of Ada Health, told Business Insider. "While it’s a noble goal to pursue it in the US or Germany, it’s even more important in countries where so many people don’t have access to a doctor."

Currently, the app is available in roughly 130 countries including Germany (where it started), the US, and Canada. Already, roughly a third of Ada's customers hail from countries outside of Germany, according to the company.

To Google or not to Google

ada health teamTo Google or not to Google — that's often the question when it comes to an ailment like a cough or stomach pain.

But researching your symptoms online can send you down a rabbit hole that leads you to think you have a life-threatening condition. A trip to the doctor, n the other hand, can be time-consuming and expensive.

Nathrath and his co-founder, Claire Novorol, created Ada Health to give people a third option.

Unlike the results that come from sites like WebMD, Ada's results are based on a growing database of hundreds of thousands of people that match your age and gender. The idea is that by homing in on a population sample you fit into, Ada can give more accurate results.

Say you're a 31-year-old woman experiencing stomach pain, for example. Once you type in your symptoms and answer Ada's questions, it might tell you that most of the other 31-year-old women in the database who reported your symptoms were diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Then Ada may advise visiting a healthcare provider. Or if the likely cause of your symptoms is not a serious issue, Ada may suggest that you simply rest.

Putting Ada into the hands of healthcare workers

As part of the new partnership with the Gates Foundation, Ada researchers will look at the data the app gathers in several rural, low-income parts of the world to better understand patients' needs and learn how to improve healthcare delivery to these regions.

In the future, Nathrath said he hopes such insights could be used to do things like help stop a deadly outbreak.

Hila Azadzoy, Ada's managing director of the Global Health Initiative, told Business Insider that her team is now working to equip Ada with more relevant data on tropical diseases like Chagas and dengue. They're also analyzing what kinds of physical diagnostic tests they could give people — along with Ada — to confirm some of its assessments.

"Most healthcare workers work door-to-door and can track patient symptoms," Azadzoy said. "The vision we have is we can put Ada into their hands and even connect Ada with diagnostics tests so that — at the home of the patient —they can pull it out and say, 'OK this is confirmed,'" she said.

Are symptom checkers the next big thing in primary care?

Since it was founded in Berlin in 2011, Ada has raised $69.3 million with the help of several big-name backers including William Tunstall-Pedoe, the AI entrepreneur behind Amazon's Alexa, and Google’s chief business officer Philipp Schindler. The company says Ada has already been used by 6 million people in the US and Europe, where it is one of the highest ranked medical apps.

Ada is not the only tool that lets users input and track their symptoms. Another so-called "symptom checker" is primary-care app K Health, which launched in 2016.

If these services can get the science and AI right, they offer a long list of potential benefits, including reducing healthcare costs, saving time for patients and doctors, slashing unnecessary worry — and even, one day perhaps, helping to prevent an outbreak like Ebola.

But more data is needed on the effectiveness of these services. The last comprehensive assessment of symptom checkers was published by Harvard Medical School researchers in 2015, before Ada or K Health existed. Since then, at least half a dozen other services have emerged as well.

Until better data becomes available on these apps, they can at least offer users an educated assessment about what's causing a symptom like a sore throat. And in rural areas where people don't have access to a healthcare provider, that could be a huge source of support.

"The first step towards getting the right treatment is understanding what’s ailing you," Nathrath said.

Just re-sent the following message I previously posted Sept. 26 to the White House: Mr. President please reconsider your administrations' plans to prioritize and accept more immigrants from Africa than anywhere else. African nations are the least democratic, most corrupt, criminal, most violent, most chaotic, least educated, least skilled and most anti-Christian nations on earth. Some are literally failed states, where populations turn to widespread criminality to survive. Many have deep Muslim roots, are full of Islamic terrorists like the evil, psychopathic Boko Haram, and Al Shabab, and every day sees literally scores of Christians murdered by Muslims in DR Congo, Nigeria, Mozambique, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia and others, not merely by the many Muslim terrorists, but ordinary Muslims. Then there are all those white South African farmers whose farms are dispossessed and whose families are murdered because of their race. These are all poor, unskilled, uneducated people from cultures vastly different from our own, who neither know nor care about post-Enlightenment Western institutions and values like Democracy, Rule of Law, Capitalism, freedom and responsibility, self-reliance, women's rights, gay rights, etc. etc. As the example of the extremely corrupt, violent and criminal Somalians transplanted to Minnesota shows, Africans are not a good fit for America. Please don't prioritize them. And thank you for your great service to our beloved country.

DRC, Tanzania resource nationalist measures more extreme – Leon      Cache   Translate Page
The resource nationalist measures being implemented in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Tanzania are significantly more extreme than those being adopted and even considered in most other African countries. One likely reason for this is that the DRC and Tanzania both suffer from significant institutional weaknesses. In that sense, they are outliers, but the general trend is undoubtedly in the direction of greater fiscal control and greater state intervention, as espoused in the African Mining Vision adopted by the African Union in 2009. This calls for transparent and equitable revenue collection and distribution; and leveraging mining to stimulate beneficiation,  procurement) and the development of infrastructure, technology and skills.

TIMU UARABUNI YAMTAKA STRAIKA HATARI YANGA      Cache   Translate Page

Yanga imecheza michezo sita kwenye ligi kuu huku wakishinda michezo mitano na kutoa sare moja huku Ajibu akiwa msaada kwenye mechi hizo.

US Ambassador Nikki Haley’s Disappointing UN Rights Legacy      Cache   Translate Page

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley speaks in the U.N. Security Council at U.N. headquarters in New York City, U.S., February 28, 2017.

Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, will not be remembered as a staunch defender of human rights when she resigns at the end of the year. She vigorously defended egregious Israeli abuses like the unlawful use of lethal force that killed over 150 protesters in Gaza this year. But her main legacy will be leading the US withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council, dismissing it as an ineffective institution that criticized Israel too much.

Many had hoped she would help the administration of President Donald Trump promote human rights abroad. After all, she had made a name for herself in 2015, when, as governor of South Carolina, she ordered the Confederate battle flag removed from the state capitol grounds after a mass shooting. Although she joined other Republican governors in opposing resettling Syrian refugees in her state, in 2016 she criticized presidential candidate Trump for his anti-immigration rhetoric. Haley wrote recently that she occasionally disagreed with Trump, though she offered no details.

As UN ambassador, Haley made important progress on several issues. She helped push the UN Security Council to impose an arms embargo on South Sudan. She urged the council to look hard at the crisis in Nicaragua. And she repeatedly asked the Democratic Republic of Congo’s President Joseph Kabila to curtail abuses against opponents and investigate the murder of two UN experts there.

When it comes to the Human Rights Council, Haley announced the US departure from the body in June, just days after the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights condemned Trump’s policy of separating children from their parents at the US-Mexico border. Haley called the council a “cesspool of bias,” and wrongly blamed Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and other human rights organizations for the US withdrawal when her ill-conceived attempts to “reform” the council received virtually no support from UN member states.

The Human Rights Council, like other UN bodies, has its shortcomings, including having serial rights violators like Saudi Arabia and China as members. Still, the council has had a positive impact, with or without US involvement. In last month’s session, it created a means to gather evidence and identify those responsible for the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya population in Myanmar. It also adopted the first-ever UN resolution on Venezuela’s crisis, and renewed an investigation into rights abuses in Yemen.

Haley’s dismissal of what she calls the “so-called Human Rights Council” rings increasingly hollow.

The startup behind a tool designed to save you a doctor's visit has partnered with Bill and Melinda Gates      Cache   Translate Page

bill gates melinda gates

ONU

(vengo anch'io! no, tu no)
poi sparare contro i negri col mitragliatore

(vengo anch'io! no, tu no)
