Will the traditions of tiny Tangier Island survive or sink?      Cache   Translate Page
Life on Tangier Island has always been defined by water. Now it is menacing its very existence. Battered by Chesapeake Bay's relentless waves, scientists say the land’s shrinking is accelerating, as man-made climate change makes the waves from rising seawater worse. John Yang talks with Earl Swift, author of "Chesapeake Requiem," and examines how life in the singular community is threatened.

Town Threatens to Jail Kids Over 12 Who Trick-or-Treat and People Are Losing Their Minds      Cache   Translate Page
Post by Maressa Brown.

Halloween is just around the corner, which means, pretty soon, masses of little ones will be hitting the sidewalks to go door-to-door in search of candies. On occasion, older kids, even teens, might hit up their neighbors for treats, too. As long as they're dressed up and polite, that should really be no big deal, right? Well, in several Virginia towns, it could earn a kid who's over 12 a fine or even jail time

What could a 60-year-old national park on the sandy shores of Cape Cod and a newly-established national monument in the remote woods of interior Maine have in common? The differences between the two are easily apparent, yet there are similarities linking these two jewels of the national park system that have their roots in New England’s natural, historic and literary heritage, as memorialized by the famed naturalist and writer Henry David Thoreau.

In an exploration of this common thread, the Association to Preserve Cape Cod will host a forum, “Guardians of Thoreau’s Legacy,” featuring a discussion with Tim Hudson, superintendent of Maine’s Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, and Brian Carlstrom, superintendent of the Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts. The forum will be take place on Thursday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in South Yarmouth.

The event is being held in conjunction with a photographic exhibition throughout the month of October, “Thoreau, The Maine Woods to Cape Cod: A Journey in Photographs by Scot Miller.” The exhibit of fine prints by photographer Scot Miller offers a visual focus on Thoreau’s connection to Cape Cod and Maine as experienced through the travels and writings of the celebrated 19th century essayist and devotee of nature. The exhibition and forum are part of APCC’s series of events in 2018 celebrating the nonprofit environmental organization’s 50th anniversary.

The October 18 forum is a unique collaboration between two National Park Service superintendents centered around a discussion about the distinctly different characteristics and surprising similarities of two regions in New England that factored prominently in the travels of Thoreau, inspired some of his most revered writings, and, through establishment of the national park and national monument, are today the guardians of his legacy.

The event will also provide the superintendents an opportunity to discuss the ongoing mission of the National Park Service in protecting and preserving the natural resources and regional character within these two geographic areas.

Presentations by the two superintendents, panel discussions and audience participation will be moderated by Mindy Todd, host of “The Point” on WCAI-FM, the Cape Cod and Islands’ local NPR affiliate.

The October 18 Cape Cod National Seashore/Katahdin Woods and Waters superintendents’ forum is free, but advance registration is recommended. To register, visit www.apcc.org/events or contact the Association to Preserve Cape Cod at 508-619-3185 or info@apcc.org.

About the Speakers

Tim Hudson has been superintendent of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument since the monument was proclaimed on August 24th, 2016. He has degrees in civil engineering from the University of California, Davis, and environmental health engineering from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Hudson began his work for the National Park Service as a seasonal employee at Kings Canyon National Park in California in 1967 and has worked in construction, maintenance and management in various park service areas since then. He was the chief of facilities at Yellowstone National Park for 20 years and was the associate regional director for operations in the Alaska Region until 2013, when he became the Northeast Region’s program manager for repair of the National Park Service infrastructure damaged by Super Storm Sandy.

Brian Carlstrom arrived at Cape Cod National Seashore in the role of superintendent in April of this year. In his 30 years as a National Park Service professional, he has worked at national and regional offices, and at many park sites. He was previously the deputy associate director of natural resource stewardship and science in Washington DC. His work there focused on managing the directorate’s budget, implementing a diversified organizational structure and coordinating strategic direction for service-wide stewardship and science efforts.  Before his work at NRSS, his park experience included positions at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, Devils Tower National Monument, Prince William Forest Park, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park and Biscayne National Park. His NPS career has covered many disciplines including resource stewardship and planning, GIS analysis, legislative affairs and congressional relations as a Bevinetto Fellow, park maintenance, interpretation and fee collection.

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, located in north central Maine, was established in 2016 to protect the diverse natural, cultural and historical resources that are abundant in the monument. It is comprised of approximately 87,500 acres of forest lands dotted with small ponds and wetlands. The most dominant natural feature of the monument—the East Branch of the Penobscot, along with its main tributaries, the Wassataquoik Stream and Sebois River—have historically served an important role as a transportation system, first for Native Americans as they traveled between seasonal settlements, and then in later years as a means to transport logs and pulp wood to mills downriver. The scenic landscape in and around the monument has inspired writers, artists and conservationists for generations, including Henry David Thoreau, along with John James Audubon, Frederic Edwin Church, a young Theodore Roosevelt, Governor Percival Baxter and many others. Today, it offers a wide array of opportunities for year-round back-country recreation and scientific and cultural study in tranquil natural landscapes, dramatic waterfalls and substantially undeveloped river and stream corridor.

Cape Cod National Seashore, located on the Outer Cape, was established in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy to preserve the nationally significant and special cultural and natural features, distinctive patterns of human activity, and ambiance that characterize the Outer Cape, along with the associated scenic, cultural, historic, scientific and recreational values. The seashore protects over 40 miles of beach and is comprised of approximately 43,600 acres of land. This land is home to kettle ponds, forests and sand dunes, and supports diverse species. There are rich human stories within the seashore as well, including that of The First People, the Wampanoag, who were here long before the Mayflower set anchor in Provincetown Harbor in 1620. The landscape here has inspired writers and artists for decades, including Henry David Thoreau, Henry Beston, Edward Hopper and many more. Today, the Cape is a place for opportunities including recreation, scientific research, and cultural studies.

Founded in 1968, the Association to Preserve Cape Cod (www.apcc.org) has been Cape Cod’s voice for the environment for 50 years and is the region’s leading nonprofit environmental advocacy and education organization. APCC works for the adoption of laws, policies and programs that preserve, protect and enhance Cape Cod’s natural resources and quality of life.

The Cultural Center of Cape Cod (www.cultural-center.org) is one of the most prominent cultural organizations in the region, serving the entire Cape community and visitors to the area by offering instruction, entertainment and exhibition in the visual, literary and performing arts.

Children over 12 face fines, jail time for trick-or-treating in Virginia town      Cache   Translate Page

The city of Chesapeake, Virginia, is attempting to keep the "trick" part of trick-or-treating to a minimum by threatening jail time for Halloween troublemakers over 12 years old. However, the city says it won't be "actively seeking out violations."

The city's ordinance code states if anyone over 12 years of age participates in "trick or treat" or any similar activity, "he or she shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine of not less than $25.00 nor more than $100.00 or by confinement in jail for not more than six months or both."

Chesapeake officials offer a bit more clarity to the seemingly harsh rule for older kids looking to dress up and join in on the fun.

"Chesapeake Police staff will focus on making sure the evening is safe for everyone," the city's website says, explaining that a 13-year-old "safely trick or treating with a younger sibling is not going to have any issues."

However, if a teen is being a Halloween ghoul, they could get in trouble.

"That same child taking pumpkins from porches and smashing them in the street more likely will," the city's website continues.

The city is also strict on the schedule for Halloween, with city code stating any person trick-or-treating after 8 p.m. will be guilty of a misdemeanor and punished by up to a $100.00 fine or jail time of up to 30 days, or both.

Chesapeake isn't the only city in Virginia imposing strict limits on Halloween. Newport News and Norfolk also have rules on the books stating that anyone older than 12 or beyond seventh grade found trick-or-treating will be "guilty of a Class 4 misdemeanor." The codes do allow parents or guardians to accompany children below the age of 12 without penalty.

by Amy Kemp,
Government and Heritage Library, 2017

In 2011 the Herring Festival in the town of Jamesville was designated the Official Herring Festival of the State of North Carolina (Session Laws, 2011-59).

About the Jamesville Herring Festival

The Jamesville Herring Festival, now called the North Carolina Herring Festival at Jamesville, is a three-day event held annually on Easter Weekend in Jamesville, North Carolina. It began in 1949 as a way for the herring fisheries to celebrate the fish’s springtime spawning runs.

The festival begins on Friday evening with a street carnival and live band. Saturday includes the pancake breakfast, 5K Herring Run, Parade, Easter Egg Hunt, Street Dance, and town Fireworks. The festival concludes on Sunday morning with the Easter Sunrise ceremony.

Whereas, each year, citizens in the area demonstrate their community pride by volunteering to make the festival a success; Now, therefore,

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

Plant Science Seminar
Dr. Grace Brush, Environmental Health and Engineering, Johns Hopkins University

Thursday October 11 at 4:00 p.m. in PLSC 1130

Dr. Brush is on the faculty in Environmental Health and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and is an eminent scholar of the history and paleohistory of the Chesapeake Bay. Her research has yielded insights into links between terrestrial land use changes and sedimentation and biology of the Bay. See some of her publications here:

https://engineering.jhu.edu/ehe/faculty/grace-s-brush/

Her seminar title and abstract are as follows:

"The pre-Colonial and post-Colonial Chesapeake environment”
Impacts of climate change and land use on the Chesapeake ecosystem are recorded in sediments deposited in the Bay since it became an estuarine system some 10,000 years ago. These surrogate records show the effect of non-human related climate events such as the retreat of the glaciers 10,000 years ago on forest composition and sediment accumulation throughout the watershed as the river system changed to an estuarine system. Changes on the land, brought about by deforestation, draining of the land, changing agriculture, conversion of large areas of land to hard surfaces in post-colonial time resulted in a four to tenfold increase in the accumulation of materials including sediments and chemicals from fertilizers into Bay waters, contributing to a change from bottom dwelling communities to a living system restricted to the oxygenated upper waters.

Trick-or-treating over age 12 or after 8 pm can lead to fines or jail time in parts of Virginia      Cache   Translate Page
Happy Halloween, but not if you are a teen. In parts of Virginia, anyone 13 or older who goes trick-or-treating can be sent to jail for up to six months according to HRScene.com. And no matter what age, trick-or-treating after 8 p.m. can land you in the clink for up to 30 days. Fines range between $25 and $100. While Chesapeake, Virginia's code is pretty strict, the city isn't alone. In many areas, going door to door, ringing or knocking and expecting a treat for those over 12 is a criminal offense. Newport allows the activity through seventh grade or at 12-year-old person, but after that, anyone engaging in such behavior is guilty of a Class 4 misdemeanor, the same as many communities in the area.
Cellphone explodes aboard school bus, injuring high schooler      Cache   Translate Page
EARLEVILLE, Md. (AP) — An exploding cellphone has injured a high school student on the bus ride home from school in Maryland. News outlets reports the school bus was bringing students home from Bohemia Manor High School in Chesapeake City on Tuesday afternoon when students pointed out a smoking cellphone laying on the floor to the driver. Authorities believe a student tried to pick up the phone to throw it out of the window and suffered burns. He was treated at a hospital. Frank Redford with the Hacks Point Fire Company says all students were evacuated from the bus, which didn't sustain fire damage. He says it appears the phone's battery exploded. It's unclear to whom the phone belonged. Officials were still investigating.

Limerick #102352 on gangway by Chris J. Strolin      Cache   Translate Page
Mama's ship docked at Chesapeake Bay,
But the gangway was crowded that day.
She was cursing out loud
As she pushed through the crowd,
"Get me off of this tugboat. Gangway!"

When the term gangway is used as a noun referring to a structure placed between a boat and the land in order to allow passengers to depart, it is pronounced "GANG-way." When used as an interjection meaning "Look out, dammit, I'm comin' through!" it's more like "GANG-WAY!"

This is silly, so many ppl in the world have working relationships with people working away. Sailors, oil rig workers, entertainment workers, consultants, flight attendants, pilots. Like is not a fantasy. If anything Trace has the resources to come when at any moment if his family(abby and kids) need him. Kids are home schooled all the time. All relationships take work clearly Abby wasn't up to the work. Also the parents should have given Bree their blessing to publish the book. They may not like what it says or that it isn't their truth but it was her's and she has the right to write and publish her story. The parents should be more supportive that worry about how the world perceives their issues.

New study helps explain recent scarcity of Bay nettles      Cache   Translate Page
(Virginia Institute of Marine Science) A new, long-term study of how environmental conditions affect the abundance and distribution of jellyfish in the nation's largest estuary helps explain the widely reported scarcity of sea nettles within Chesapeake Bay during the past few months and raises concerns about how a long-term continuation of this trend might harm Bay fisheries as climate continues to warm.
