Russian Influence Rising in Balkans, Baltics, Central Europe      Cache   Translate Page
A week before a crucial election, Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik traveled to Russia for a Formula One race — not because he’s a big fan but for yet another meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.  Footage from the race in Sochi showed Putin wishing Dodik “great success” in the Bosnian election and the Serb presenting Putin with a Republika Srpska pin, the Serb-controlled autonomous region in Bosnia.  The video was a blatant display of Russia influence in one of Europe’s most sensitive regions — the fragile Balkans — where the West has sought to encourage reconciliation and reform after a brutal ethnic war in the 1990s.  The brief photo opportunity with Putin helped Dodik win the race to fill the Serb seat in Bosnia’s three-member presidency on Sunday, deepening the ethnic divisions that have held Bosnia back since its devastating 1992-1995 war. Dodik openly advocates having Serbs separate from the rest of Bosnia and has been sanctioned by the U.S. for his policies. But he has proven to be a key ally in Moscow’s efforts to undermine the Western policies of Balkan integration.  While Russian influence is the most obvious in the Balkans, an upsurge of populism in Central Europe has also played into Moscow’s hands, providing sympathetic political parties and politicians across the continent, including in European Union nations like Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic.   Pro-Russia forces also did well in another corner of Europe.  In Latvia, an opposition party favored by the country’s large ethnic Russian minority got the most votes Saturday in the Baltic nation’s parliamentary election, although the party is expected to run into difficulties in trying to form a coalition government.  Latvia’s Russian minority is a major domestic political force, accounting for about 25 percent of its nearly 2 million people, a legacy of nearly 50 years of Soviet occupation that ended in 1991. Dodik’s victory in Bosnia further strengthened Moscow’s foothold in the Western Balkans, since he can how block any strategic decision — if Putin says so. Russia staunchly opposes any more Balkan countries joining NATO. Western officials have expressed fear that Russia has used its historic Slavic and Orthodox Christian ties in the region to undermine Western policies of integration.  Sarajevo-based political analyst Adan Huskic said Moscow’s influence was also growing in the parts of Europe that don’t have those identity links.  What these countries have in common are “high levels of nepotism, corruption” so bonding more closely with Western democracies is “by nature, very difficult for them,” he said.  Russia’s strategic aim is not to assert authority over the Balkans but to “harness and magnify existing tensions,” the European Council on Foreign Relations said in a report.  “In Russian eyes, the EU’s approach toward the Western Balkans is neither serious nor systematic, and so offers Moscow opportunities to create leverage,” the report added. Russian allies in the Balkans have been actively sowing mistrust in Western democracies, presenting Washington and Brussels as enemies who want to strip nations of their identity and national pride by pushing for EU integration. Dodik is a perfect example. For him, the West and NATO are enemies while Russia is a friend full of respect for the Slavic “brethren.” Absorbed in own problems — the euro debt crisis, immigration or Britain’s impending Brexit departure — the EU for years has neglected the Balkans. Alarmed, some EU officials now fear that Balkans could plunge into renewed conflict unless it's quickly embraced by the 28-nation bloc.  “If such a complex European region gets an impression that we are not serious with the European perspective, we will experience, sooner rather than later, what we saw in the Balkans during the 1990s,” European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker recently said. Those fears are not groundless. Tensions between Serbia and its former province of Kosovo, which declared independence in 2008, have been on the rise despite efforts by the EU to hammer out a lasting solution between the two former war foes. Belgrade raised the combat readiness of its troops two weeks ago over Kosovo special police presence in its Serb-populated north. In Macedonia, U.S. and EU hopes for swift passage of a deal between Macedonia and Greece to change Macedonia’s name to North Macedonia so it can join NATO suffered a blow when a Sept. 30 referendum on the name saw low turnout. The vote result raised fears of instability in the country that was on the brink of a civil war in 2001.  U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis saw Russian influence behind some Macedonia and Greek protests against the move. “We do not want to see Russia doing (in Macedonia) what they have tried to do in so many other countries,” he said last month. Russia has denied meddling in any Balkan or Baltic country. But Russia's soft-power strategy has found fertile ground among Serbs, due to NATO’s bombings in 1999 that halted a bloody Serb crackdown on Kosovo and forced Serbs to pull out. In return for Russia’s support for Serbia’s claim over Kosovo, Serbia has been a faithful ally even though it formally pursues EU integration and uses millions in Western recovery funds. Two Russian military intelligence operatives operated from Serbia in 2016 when they tried to organize a coup in neighboring Montenegro to stop the former Russian ally from joining NATO. “We saw that referendum has not succeeded in Macedonia,” said Serbian analyst Bosko Jaksic. “We can see it now in Bosnia, where the Republika of Srpska became the bastion of the Russian interest. We saw it before in Montenegro, and we are seeing it in Serbia. This is helping Russians to invest the minimum and get nearly the maximum of their political influence.”

The Hobo Guide to Wild Camping in Europe      Cache   Translate Page

I’m camping in Europe at the moment. Pitching my tent at rest stops, in the mountains and inconspicuously behind bushes on private land. I’m camping because there are some day hikes I can’t bear to leave after only a few hours. I want to wake up in the fog and sleep amongst all the creatures that explore the land at night. I’m also doing it to stretch the little money I flew to Europe with.

Each country has its own laws when it comes to wild camping. Here’s a list, but please do your own research if you’re really concerned.

Wild camping is legal in: Sweden, Albania, Armenia, Belarus, Bosnia, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Russia, Slovakia, Turkey, Ukraine, Scotland

Wild camping is a bit of a grey area in: France, Austria, Bulgaria, Czech, Hungary, Moldova, Netherlands, Romania, Serbia, Switzerland

Wild camping is totally illegal in: Italy, Aldorra, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain (they’re really complicated), England, Wales

However, if you’re setting up shop just to rest your head for the night, camping is generally permissible. Pitch at dark and leave in the morning and nobody’s going to bat an eyelid, especially if you’re out of sight. How many times do you drive on a highway or pass a mountain and look for a tent? Worst case scenario: plead ignorance. You’re a tourist.

Here are my packing essentials:

1. A tent

If you’re heading over in summer, you can probably get away with a festival tent, especially if you’ve got some cash in the bank to splurge on accommodation when there’s a stormy night. I use a lightweight two-person Vango Bravo 200, because I need something I can carry on my back with the rest of my stuff that can also accommodate a mate, should I meet one on my journey.

If you’re wild camping, especially in places where wild camping is considered illegal or a grey area, maybe invest in something a little more inconspicuous than the blue one I’ve gone for. You can spot that baby from a mile away.

World War II and Epic Fantasy      Cache   Translate Page
Epic fantasy is, arguably, a form of storytelling highly influenced by the Second World War. World War II remains unusual in military history for being a conflict which can clearly be divided between the “bad guys” (Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan) and the “good guys” (the plucky Brits, the brave French Resistance and the heroic-if-a-bit-tardy United States of America) with a minimum of moral uncertainty. Popular narratives of the Second World War show the heroic, democracy-loving Brits and Yanks storming the beaches of Normandy to save Europe from the diabolical and evil rule of the brutal Third Reich.

Christopher Lee as Saruman in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. Lee fought in the British special forces in WWII, in operations that he refused to discuss even decades afterwards.

This is of course monstrously simplistic, and ignores the morally murkier elements of the conflict, such as the Allied mass bombing campaign that was designed to slaughter as many German civilians as possible, and of course the involvement of the Soviet Union in the war. The USSR committed many atrocities of its own (including being complicit in Germany’s invasion of Poland which started the war in the first place) and was willing to accept staggering military and civilian losses to finally defeat the Germans and capture Berlin (a fact glossed over in western accounts of the conflict, which tend to suggest that the US and UK were the primary architects of Hitler’s downfall rather than relative bystanders). Still, the sometimes almost cartoonishly evil nature of the Nazi regime (“Are we the bad guys? If not, why do our uniforms have skulls on them?”) allows it to be presented as an irredeemable foe who must be destroyed at all costs with a minimum of moral qualms, very useful for propaganda, morale and rousing novels, films and video games.

Epic fantasy written in the post-war era feels like it is influenced by this conflict. People writing fantasy in this period either fought in the war directly, were children during it or were born in the aftermath of the conflict and grew up with stories of it from their parents and grandparents.

The fantasy saga sometimes said to have been most influenced by the war is The Lord of the Rings, although J.R.R. Tolkien was scornful of this. He started writing the book in late 1937, two years before the conflict even began, and the story and themes of the book developed out of The Hobbit, mostly written in 1930-32 or thereabouts. The titular One Ring itself is sometimes compared to a nuclear bomb (in its ability to end the War of the Ring in a single stroke rather than actual destructive power) and much is made of the Scouring of the Shire and its similarity to the military occupation of a formerly peaceful territory. However, the Ring was created for The Hobbit and its powers established long before the outbreak of the conflict. Tolkien himself was furious with the idea of the book being an allegory (noting he detested allegory wherever it was found), but did acknowledge the idea of “applicability,” and the disturbing feeling that real events were conforming (somewhat) to those in the book rather than vice versa. Tolkien did acknowledge a much greater influence on the book by his own experiences in World War I, particularly the several months he spent on the Western Front during the Battle of the Somme. The Frodo-Sam relationship is reminiscent of that between a gentleman soldier and his batman, and the Dead Marshes with their hordes of corpses (and semi-undead) lying face-up in the flooded marshlands being an image that stuck with Tolkien from the aftermath of bloody engagements.

Skipping ahead a few generations, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman’s Dragonlance Chronicles feels like a revamp of the Second World War. The forces of evil gain a series of military advantages from the return of the dark goddess Takhisis and the ability to control evil dragons in battle. This allows them to overrun half the continent of Ansalon and push the remaining nations and our heroes to the brink of defeat. However, our heroes gain the favour of the god Paladine, the allegiance of the good dragons and then the ability to use the fabled dragonlances in battle. This turns the tide and routs the enemy. This can be seen as a reflection of the military technology in WWII: the Germans’ early innovation and technical ingenuity gave them a keen early edge that allowed them to defeat everyone they faced in battle, but later in the conflict the Allies first matched and then exceeded their technological advantage, which the Germans could not sustain and ultimately lost.

Many epic fantasies feature narratives not dissimilar to this. The Wheel of Time shows a growing threat from a powerful opponent who is allowed to go unchecked because the nations that should be unifying against them can’t stop their squabbles with one another, even when the threat becomes blatant. This is an echo of the way Hitler expertly exploited inter-war rivalries between nations such as Russia and Poland to stop opponents joining forces against him (and, indeed, struck an unlikely alliance himself with Russia which prevented them from joining France and Britain in the war). The decision of the forces of “Light” in the books to join forces with the morally highly dubious Seanchan to fight the Dark One can be seen as a reflection of the reluctance with which nations like Britain (whose leader, Churchill, held a deep and abiding hatred of Communism) allied with Russia to fight the greater threat, and the repeated warning that this alliance could sow the seeds of a greater conflict later on (as it very nearly did, with the Cold War almost going nuclear-hot on several occasions, and various visions in The Wheel of Time showing a future where the Seanchan and the other nations resume their conflict).

George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire is rather different, however. The conflict between the Great Houses is of course most strongly influenced by the Wars of the Roses, but there is also a strong influence from World War I: the Houses go to war against one another in a manner reflecting their inter-war alliances and fuelled by grievances (just and unjust) extending back generations, with Jon Arryn’s death and then Tyrion Lannister’s arrest setting in motion a series of falling dominoes leading to conflict as much as Franz Ferdinand’s assassination in August 1914.

The most notable fantasy novel series directly based on World War II is Harry Turtledove’s Darkness series, a six-volume series set on a continent resembling Eurasia which is riven by war. Technological developments are replaced by discoveries in the field of sorcery but every nation has its real-world analogue (albeit often inverted; the war in the desert in Africa is replaced by a war on a southern polar continent) and the conflict unfolds in a very similar manner. Turtledove of course likes to revisit WWII in his alternate history fiction, with his splendidly readable, pulp Worldwar series being set during a WWII interrupted by the arrival of an alien invasion fleet, and his darker Southern Victory series in which the Confederacy survives the Civil War as an independent state and becomes embroiled in further conflicts leading to the establishing of a North American theatre in WWII (which, due to a German victory in WWI and no rising of the Nazi Party, unfolds very differently).

A recent fantasy which directly echoes the war is the video game series Valkyria Chronicles. Set on the continent of Europa, the story charts the outbreak of war between the East Europan Imperial Alliance (a blending of Nazi Germany in ideology and Soviet Russia in size and manpower) and the Atlantic Federation (a mixture of western European nations such as Britain and France, and NATO of the Cold War period, albeit with an American analogue which is very reluctant to get involved in the fight). The war opens with the Empire invading the Federation and the small neutral nation of Gallia (based loosely on the Netherlands and Belgium), the latter both to seize its deposits of ragnite (a valuable ore which powers advanced technology) and to allow it to invade the Federation on a second front. Unlike the real war, where the Low Countries were overrun quickly, in the game the much smaller Gallian army is able to rally around the nation’s complex geography (particularly its rivers and canals) and prevent the numerically superior Imperial army from seizing the country. The Empire’s insistence on deploying increasingly insane and impractical tanks on the battlefield and its constant hunt for superweapons is an echo of Hitler’s insistence on deploying increasingly unreliable new technology during WWII rather than refining existing designs, not to mention his increasingly desperate search for “doomsday weapons” that could end the war quickly. Even the Mamota, an insane “land battleship” which the Empire uses at the end of the game, is based on a real idea, the Landkreuzer P.1000 Ratte, a 1,000-ton tank Hitler heartily endorsed but whose development was cancelled by Albert Speer on the reasonable grounds it was ridiculous.

Valkyria Chronicles (2008) is unusual in combining both direct WWII elements – guns, artillery, grenades, tanks, propaganda and pogroms against a scapegoated minority (the Darcsens replacing the Jews) – and traditional fantasy tropes. There is an ancient magical race, the Valkyrur, whose power lingers into the modern age and at key moments both protagonists and antagonists gain access to their power. There are magical items and hopeless struggles by a plucky band of up-against-the-odds heroes against monstrous enemies (although some of them are shown to have a code of individual honour at odds with the atrocities their forces commit). Surprisingly cynically, the Federation, which becomes prominent in Valkyria Chronicles 4 (2018), is shown to sometimes be brutal and cold as well, willing to sacrifice vast numbers of civilian lives and infringe the borders of sovereign nations in order to get an upper hand against the Empire and is secretly developing a weapon of mass destruction behind the scenes. The oddest element of the Valkyria universe, given how closely it parallels WWII, is the near-total absence of aircraft from the conflict, with the few aircraft mentioned or appearing being WWI-style biplanes.

Of course, the straightforward (if not exactly accurate) good vs. evil nature of WWII gave rise afterwards to much more morally murky conflicts where the notions of good, evil, justice and injustice became far more fluid: Suez, Vietnam, Bosnia, the Iraq War and clashes of religious fundamentalists. This can be seen in the type of fantasy fiction that has followed: the Black Company (by Vietnam vet Glen Cook) and Steven Erikson’s The Malazan Book of the Fallen (inspired by a lot of war fiction, and indeed The Black Company) are much less clear-cut tales where good and evil are less of an issue. Joe Abercrombie explores some of the same issues of morally flexible real politik in his First Law world. Scott Bakker’s Second Apocalypse series (including the Prince of Nothing and Aspect-Emperor sub-series) delves deep into religious fundamentalism and fanaticism. Mark Lawrence’s Broken Empire series presents the world with a monstrously damaged human being who commits atrocities but who, ultimately, may end up saving the world. The moral relativism of post-WWII conflicts has been well matched and explored by fantasy fiction, perhaps too much for some as we’ve also seen a re-emergence of throwback fantasy, more concerned with more straightforward tales of good vs. evil (such as Michael Sullivan’s Ririya series and Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere works).

WWII will remain a rich source of inspiration for fantasy fiction, although it is refreshing (if perhaps a tad depressing) to see other, less clear-cut conflicts being mined for different kinds of stories.

World's Most Powerful Passport Revealed As Countries' Global Rankings Shift      Cache   Translate Page
Japan passport holders will find it easier than ever to travel the world, as their travel documents have just moved up in the global Henley Passport Index to take the top spot.

The Henley Passport Index is a ranking of all of the passports in the world based on the number of countries their holders can travel to visa-free.

Until now Japan had been sharing joint first place with Singapore, which gained visa-free access to Uzbekistan earlier this year bringing its total to 189 countries.

However, earlier this month Japan gained visa-free access to Myanmar bringing its total to 190 - once again taking it to the top spot.

It's still a milestone for both Japan and Singapore, as 2018 is the first year in the index's 13-year history that either of them has had the most powerful passport in the world.
Both are way ahead of the UK and US which share fifth place with Portugal, the Netherlands, Austria and Luxembourg - but it's worth noting that the top four spots are shared by 10 countries.

Experts had previously revealed that the UK ranking is unlikely to increase until there is certainty regarding Brexit.

Paul Pogba back to friendly environment with France      Cache   Translate Page

PARIS — Far away seem the days when Paul Pogba was praised for the mature displays that helped France win the World Cup.

For the Manchester United midfielder, the euphoria that engulfed French players following their title lasted only a few weeks as he fell out with coach Jose Mourinho on his return to Old Trafford.

Pogba's relationship with Mourinho has been complicated since his return to United in 2016. But it reached its nadir last month when Pogba was stripped of the vice-captaincy at the club and then appeared to have a spat with Mourinho at practice.

Following a poor start to the season, United is under pressure and Pogba's future there seems uncertain amid reports he could leave.

Such concerns are irrelevant when Pogba plays with his national team, and the international break is likely to provide solace to a player regarded as indispensable by France coach Didier Deschamps.

Pogba joined his teammates at France's training ground ahead of Thursday's friendly game against Iceland. France, which beat Croatia in the World Cup final in July, hosts Germany in the UEFA Nations League on Oct. 16 at Stade de France.

"I don't want to interfere with the relationship that he, or any other player, could have with his coach," Deschamps said. "But given the situation of some (players) in their clubs, the breath of fresh air brought by the France team can do them good."

Often criticized for his laid-back approach, Pogba took more responsibilities in France during the World Cup and is now regarded as a proper team leader. Pogba is crediting Deschamps, who uses him on the pitch in a less restricted role than Mourinho, for his positive influence.

"I have a very good relationship with the coach, he speaks straight to me," Pogba said.

Here is a look at other talking points ahead of this week's international matches:

EMPTY STADIUM

The last time Croatia played England was in the packed Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow in a World Cup semifinal match. When they meet in the Croatian coastal city of Rijeka on Friday, there will be no fans.

Croatia is completing a stadium ban imposed by UEFA in 2015 when a swastika was painted on its field ahead of a game.

STRUGGLING ITALY

Italy is in desperate need of a victory at Poland on Sunday to avoid more embarrassment after failing to qualify for the last World Cup.

The Azzurri already sit last in its Nations League group with only one point and one goal scored from their opening two matches — a 1-1 draw with Poland and a 1-0 loss to Portugal.

Napoli's Lorenzo Insigne is being tapped for a "false 9" role amid a series of problems for the usual center forwards.

Mario Balotelli and Andrea Belotti have been dropped due to poor form while Ciro Immobile and Simone Zaza have struggled with the national team.

FALLEN CHAMPS REBUILD

Germany is still searching for its way back after its disastrous World Cup defense in Russia. Joachim Loew's squad drew 0-0 with France last month in a game in Munich that did little to assure fans it will be challenging again for titles anytime soon.

If anything, the game just highlighted the absence of Mesut Ozil, who retired from international football after feeling he was made the scapegoat for the German team's disappointing performances in Russia. While Loew wanted his side to display more defensive stability, it failed to convince going forward.

Loew experimented with five changes in the subsequent 2-1 friendly win over Peru, but the pressure is on to show real progress is being made in the games against the Netherlands and France.

REPLACING RONALDO

With Cristiano Ronaldo out again, Portugal's attack will be relying on Andre Silva, the Sevilla striker who has been thriving in the Spanish league.

Silva, playing on a loan from AC Milan, has seven goals in eight league matches so far. Silva scored Portugal's winner in the 1-0 win over Italy in the team's Nations League debut and is set to start in the match at Poland on Friday. Ronaldo hasn't played for Portugal since the World Cup and isn't expected to be back until next year.

DEPLETED SPAIN

Spain will be depleted when it hosts England on Monday with a chance to practically secure a spot in the Nations League's final four.

Some key players will be absent because of injuries, including Francisco "Isco" Alarcon, Dani Carvajal, Sergi Roberto and Diego Costa.

BEST OF THE REST

Russia returns to Sochi, where the World Cup host lost a quarterfinals penalty shootout against Croatia, to play Turkey on Sunday in Group 2 of League B. Russia first hosts Sweden in Kaliningrad on Thursday.

In B3, Bosnia-Herzegovina goes for a third straight when Northern Ireland visits on Monday.

In League C, Group 4 co-leaders Montenegro and Serbia meet in Podgorica on Thursday. The Balkan neighbors joined together as one team at the 2006 World Cup.

In League D, teams with two wins last month include Georgia which next hosts Andorra, Luxembourg playing at Belarus, and Macedonia hosting Liechtenstein.

One of the longest journeys in European soccer faces Azerbaijan — about 4,400 kilometers (2,750 miles) to play at the Faroe islands on Thursday.

Massive blast at Russian-owned oil refinery in northern Bosnia, one worker dead and nine injured      Cache   Translate Page
At least eight workers have been injured after a series of explosions struck an oil-processing plant in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Photos and videos show the plant engulfed in flames and black smoke billowing from the fire. The first explosion hit one of the production facilities on the territory of the Brod oil refinery around 9.30 pm. The fighters called to the scene have since contained the blaze. Witnesses say that the explosion was so powerful some thought the city was jolted by an earthquake. The blasts shattered some of the windows in the nearby buildings. One witnesses said that the sound of the initial explosion was so loud that it resembled a bombing. "The explosion was extremely loud, as if war started again," the witness said, as cited by Večernji List newspaper. The bangs were also heard in eastern Croatia, in the city of Slavonski Brod, located just across the Sava River from the Bosnian town.

Blazer Boosters: Unaffiliated Trail Blazer Believers      Cache   Translate Page
by Aris Hunter Wales

For some, Trail Blazers fandom runs deeper than just flying the team colors, slapping a pinwheel on a car, and following them during the regular season. It’s a lifestyle choice. That true love for the Blazers can often burrow its way into other corners of an obsessive fan’s life. Got a passion for craft beer, apparel design, or helping the community and bringing likeminded folks together? Incorporate that red and black!

For those looking for more than just Blazers basketball this season, the following is a short list of unaffiliated, Blazers-tinted operations and communities you’ll want to keep tabs on. Go Blazers!!

Women’s Hoops and Talks

Tara Bowen-Biggs is a Portland native and a possessed Trail Blazers fan. She’s been running the Facebook group Women’s Hoops and Talks (WHAT) for three seasons.

“One evening after watching a game with a bunch of my guy friends, I realized I’d never done the same with all women,” says Bowen-Biggs. “Some of the most dedicated fans I know are women, so what would it be like to have a group over to watch the game, where no one was intimidated to speak up, and all types of fans were welcome?”

Bowen-Biggs wanted to make a safe space for women to enjoy Blazers basketball—a place where they could watch and appreciate a game regardless of their knowledge of basketball or the team. WHAT also meets up once a month to watch an away game, plus there’s Blazers-themed trivia at halftime, team swag giveaways, and general merriment. Last season Moda Health reached out and offered the group a suite for a preseason game (which they happily accepted).

While the meet-ups are intended for women, Bowen-Biggs wants WHAT to be fully inclusive.

“Men can come,” Bowen-Biggs says, “but they’re asked to remember they’re there to support and help amplify the voices of women. This is all about letting women drive the conversation.”

Gilgamesh Brewing’s “The Terry Porter”

Gilgamesh Brewing’s motto is “A Beer for Everyone.” Their eclectic array of beers and work with local charities, like Growing Gardens and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation, certainly lives up to this motto. So to show their appreciation for the Blazers—while raising some scratch for Doernbecher—they created a beer they call “The Terry Porter.”

Matt Radtke, one of the three brothers who started Gilgamesh, explains how the Terry Porter came to fruition:

“I put together a gift basket for a St. Jude Charity auction and wanted to bring more value to it. Terry [Porter] agreed to meet and sign some bottles. We got to talking about how he’s on the board of directors at Doernbecher. The idea came naturally to create a beer together and donate a portion of the proceeds from the sales of the beer.”

This will be the fourth season Gilgamesh has been brewing the Terry Porter, and according to Matt, sales from the beer has helped generate roughly $140K for Doernbecher. They expect that number to grow this year when they start offering the beer in cans come mid-November.

“[We] couldn’t ask for a better partner,” Radtke says of this Blazers legend. “Terry is a solid guy and has put in a lot of time and energy into helping promote the beer and the cause. We’re fortunate to work with him, and add to his legacy as a local Oregon hero.”

Trillblazin’

Sometimes officially licensed Trail Blazers merchandise doesn’t have the personality it should or could. If you’ve been looking for something with a bit more of an edge, look no further than Trillblazin’, a company started five years ago by Ira LaFontaine with Keith Kunis.

“We’d both grown up really into basketball and street culture,” Ira says. “Being from Portland, we’re huge Blazer fans, but we weren’t seeing anything that spoke to us apparel-wise. Team apparel and licensed stuff has always been really boilerplate, and we just wanted to be able to wear something that was a little more our style.”

Their line leans heavy on the glorious character that is Rasheed Wallace and his words of wisdom, “Ball Don’t Lie”—but Trillblazin’ brings in the new school whenever they can. They recently did a collaboration shirt with Portugal. The Man, and the Blazers’ big man himself, Jusuf Nurkić, has been spotted wearing Trillblazin’s’ Bosnian Beast shirt.

Much like Rasheed Wallace, Trillblazin’ apparel is brash and confident—the perfect brand for Ira’s prediction for the season ahead: “2018 summer league champs, 2019 NBA champs, baby.”

Honorable Mentions

You don’t have to tune in to Comcast or Rip City Radio to get the latest developments and thoughts on the Blazers. Follow Blazers Edge and Rip City Project and see what other folks with Blazers on the brain are thinking.

Blazer Gang has some great, unlicensed merchandise as well, so go to blazergonian.com to buy yourself one of their “Rip City On They Ass” shirts, or any of the many other refinements they offer.

Ireland U19: Second-half goals beat Bosnia and Herzegovina      Cache   Translate Page
Will Ferry

Second-half goals from Will Ferry (above), Troy Parrott and Adam Idah were enough to claim the three points in a hard-fought encounter.

Bosnia and Herzegovina started the brighter, but it was Ireland who have the best chances in an entertaining opening period.

Striker Adam Idah's shot from close range tested Adnan Kanuric in the opening 15-minutes, but the goalkeeper did excellently to palm his shot over the bar.

Idah went close twice more before the break, but both efforts went just wide.

Bosnia and Herzegovina's best effort of the opening period came from Milan Savic, briefly troubling Brian Maher in the Irish net.

It was Bosnia and Herzegovina who started the brighter after the break, but Ireland took the lead through Will Ferry. The winger combined well with Conor Coventry, and his shot beat Kanuric from close range.

Ireland's lead doubled ten-minutes later. Jack James was fouled in the box, and despite the best protests of Enio Zilic, Slovakian referee Filip Glova pointed to the spot. Troy Parrott stepped up and delicately chipped the ball down the middle to give Tom Mohan's side a 2-0 lead.

Adam Idah made it 3-0 in the 74th-minute. The striker scored from inside the box, cooly slotting past Kanuric.

Minutes later, substitute Mateo Bozic pulled one back for Bosnia and Herzegovina, as his deflected free-kick beat Maher.

Despite the late goal, Ireland held out to record a deserved 3-1 win.

Speaking after the game, Head Coach Tom Mohan said it was crucial to start the Qualifying Round with three points.

"It was a very important win. Bosnia and Herzegovina proved to be very tough opponents. They had us under pressure early on, but once we seen that out, we got a grip of the game.

"There was some great finishes from our players. The goals came at important times. Their goal left things edgy in the final minutes, but we were well deserving of the win."

Mohan's side return to action on Saturday afternoon. They play the Faroe Islands in Longford. Kick-off is at 3pm.

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Adnan Kanuric; Jusuf Gazibegovic, Enio Zilic, Nemanja Vjestica (Dzenan Osmanovic 70), Eldar Sehic (Adis Mujkic 59); Igor Savic, Marko Brkic (Dzani Salcin 70), Stefan Santrac (Mateo Bozic 58); Milan Savic, Faris Zubanovic (Milan Sikanjic 70), Ajdin Hasic

Republic of Ireland: Brian Maher; Andy Lyons, Lee O'Connor (capt), Nathan Collins, Jack James; Conor Coventry, Aaron Bolger; Glen McAuley (Barry Coffey 90+1), Troy Parrott, Will Ferry (Ali Reghba 67); Adam Idah
