Arizona Coyotes assign first-round pick Barrett Hayton to junior team      Cache   Translate Page
The Arizona Coyotes surprised some when they had their first-round pick from this year, Barrett Hayton, on their opening night roster. The move was viewed as a way for the 18-year-old to get valuable off-ice experience in the NHL, and if he appeared in a game, good for him. Two games into the season — and hours before the team was set to go to Anaheim for its third contest of the year — Hayton has been sent back to his junior team, the Sault St. Marie Greyhounds of the OHL. He did not appear in a regular season game for the Coyotes. Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said before the season opener against Dallas that during Hayton’s time with the team in training camp and beyond, his play and understanding of the systems improved, and he played well on the penalty kill. “That’s a plus for us that he’s gaining that experience,” Tocchet said. “Even if he doesn’t play right now, he’s getting that experience right now.” Related Links Arizona Coyotes remain winless -- and calm -- through 2 games Coyotes' Antti Raanta hono

ASSASSINS Closes Season At The Long Beach Playhouse      Cache   Translate Page

The Long Beach Playhouse Studio Theatre closes its 2018 season with Stephen Sondheim's musical Assassins. The play opens with an eerie carnival calliope playing Hail to the Chief. Instead of a patriotic welcome for a president it's a carnival shooting gallery that offers a shocking invitation to the assembled crowd. As the barker calls for contestants, eight individuals step forward.

Apparel ranges from a 19th Century frock coat to a Santa Claus costume. Each receives their own gun. And with that most shocking opening scene, musical genius Stephen Sondheim and playwright John Weidman bend time and space to allow the nation's nine successful and would-be presidential assassins to meet, interact, and inspire one another to make their mark in the American history books.

"Sondheim uses music to show us the souls of the assassins," said Madison Mooney, Executive Director for the Long Beach Playhouse. "He insists we see them as human beings and understand their motives. For example, John Wilkes Booth muses that some think he did it for fame, but he contends he wanted to kill the man who killed his country. Unfortunately, that probably reflected the view of many southerners in that era."

The music for The Ballad of Booth is reminiscent of Civil War songs. John Hinckley is writing a love note to Jodie Foster that turns into a ballad. Squeaky Fromme joins with Hinckley declaring her love for Charlie Manson.

"It's the music that speaks the loudest," said Sean Gray, Artistic Director for the Playhouse and director for this show. "The lyrics draw us in and show us the commonality in the experience. In Something Just Broke Sondheim reminds us that the words 'I know where I was when I heard it' cuts across political leanings and time to capture the feeling of the nation when a president is shot.

"One of the defining characteristics of Sondheim is his ability to handle the darkest of topics with melodies and arrangements that are upbeat and in sharp contrast to the lyrics. Not everyone can write about political assassinations in a way that makes one want to sing along, but Sondheim and Weidman have done just that. I think it's that counterpoint that makes the show engaging despite the dark subject."

As artistic director for the Playhouse, Gray proposed and advocated for the show. As the show's director, he is responsible for selecting the cast, approving the designs and pulling the absolute best performance out of the actors as individuals and as a group. This is his tenth time in the director's chair at the Playhouse. He has a string of successes behind him including Spring Awakening, Sweeney Todd and Cabaret.

The set is equal parts patriotic Americana and pure carnival. Stephen Olear is the musical director. The show boasts a six-piece band with trombones, flutes, sax, keyboards and drums. Halley Hardy is the choreographer, her touch is a meaningful addition to the production. Costume Shop Manager Donna Fritsche and her team of volunteers are building memorable costumes for the actors. Her talents for design and storytelling will be on full display.

Making their debuts are: Derek Rubiano, Kevin Wood, Sean McCallon, John Vann, Amanda Webb and Jess Oliver. Those returning are: Brian Pirnat, Jeseka Luna, Kyra Kiener, Taryne Moyse, Nick Bradfield, Noah Wagner, Hunter Ryti, Mark Eggert, William Ardelean, and Serena Bottiani-Henderson.

The show opens October 12 and runs through November 17.

Friday: Adults are $20.00, Seniors $18.00, and Students $14.00Saturday and Sunday: Adults are $24.00, Seniors $21.00, and Students $14.00.

Tickets are available at www.lbplayhouse.org, or by calling 562-494-1014, option 1. Long Beach Playhouse is located at 5021 E. Anaheim St., Long Beach, CA, 90804, right across from the Long Beach Recreation golf course. The Playhouse is community-supported theatre with programs and events that cut across age, gender, ethnic, and cultural boundaries.

Performances are 8 p.m. Friday, and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. The box office is open Wednesday-Saturday from 3:00-8:00 pm and Sundays from 1:00-2:00 pm on scheduled matinees.

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News, Many Red Wings fans were soundly asleep when they played their last two games in Southern California.... They lost both games by slim margins. In Los Angeles, 4-2 with the Kings scoring a late empty-net goal and in Anaheim, 3-2, in a shootout (the Ducks won the shootout 1-0). Monday’s defeat probably stung a bit more because the Ducks are as physically beat-up as the Wings, and like the Wings, had six rookies in the lineup. There was a potential to grab two points there. Bright spots like an extremely young and inexperienced defense holding its own in these games were balanced out by the Wings over-passing and eliminating goal-scoring opportunities. The kids, largely, are making a positive impression, playing through predictable mistakes and getting valuable NHL experience.... Here’s a brief checklist to get you up to date: - That young defense isn’t playing badly at all: It’s almost getting to the point where you begin to wonder what’ll happen when Trevor Daley (upper body), Jonathan Ericsson (upper body), Mike Green (infection) and Niklas Kronwall (lower body) begin returning to the lineup – all are day-to-day except for Green, who is more week-to-week — and some of these young players are sent to Grand Rapids. read on

Comment on The Phil Baccera I Know by Dan Chmielewski      Cache   Translate Page
Thanks for your comments Bruce; very much appreciated. Yes, Phil is a good guy and I have said I am prepared to change my mind with the presentation of evidence. I have asked that emails and text messages between the two be made public. Both of them can come forward. Griselda mentioned known witnesses; let them come forward. I welcome their observations of what they saw. And the notion that argument against Julio doesn't hold water, I respectufully disagree. Some of the very people calling for Phil's head said nothing when Julio was investigated. I'm also reminded of the statement Victor Valledares ex-wife Briana Lalama made last year when #metoo emerged. Here it is (and let me know if you believe her credible): " Breannia Lalama is feeling inspired. · November 13, 2017 · Anaheim · My name is Breannia Lalama, the ex-wife of Victor Valladares. I recently saw a Facebook post written by my ex-husband, Victor Valladares, responding to an article that was written about the physical, mental, sexual and emotional abuse I have been struggling to overcome. Unlike so many other brave women out there, I did not feel empowered by the #MeToo campaign and had nothing to do with publishing the Sledgehammer article about my history of domestic violence. I understand that it was written by a woman concerned about Victor’s place in the Democratic party of Orange County. She informed the public about the sworn statements I made in 2013. I made those statements because I feared for my life after I was sexually, physically and verbally attacked by Victor Valladares. I sought protection for my safety from the courts. I was utterly disgusted to see others question my truthfulness and attack me, a victim for speaking out and seeking the court’s protection. I made these statements before Victor was a delegate to the Democratic Party of Orange County. It was not political – it was for my safety and photos and witnesses can corroborate my testimony that was made under oath. He had physically, sexually and verbally attacked me many times before I sought a divorce, but I was too scared to report him because he threatened that if I did he would harm me or my family members. That is also the reason I chose to drop the case, because of my fear of him. This same fear prevented me from speaking out about his violence and abuse then and now. After seeing what he wrote about me calling me a liar, and also watching the many other women today bravely speaking about their abusive situations, I want to finally come out and tell my story. I am ashamed to admit that I was abused for years by Victor Valladares and I have the injuries to prove it. I am speaking for myself because I am tired of his abusive attacks and lies and I won’t be bullied by him anymore. He claims he did not do what I swore to under oath, but where is his oath? Our own children witnessed the abuse. Will he call them liars again like he called our youngest son a F-ing liar November 1st to save himself instead of worrying about the impact that this has on our children? I could go to jail for making that up. Why would I do that? There are witnesses to much of this abuse and they are willing to speak up about what they witnessed. He tries to put across one image in public and I want people to know the truth. He is a public figure and they are entitled to the truth. I have injuries from him, both physical and mental, that I will never recover from. He ignores his child support responsibilities. He smears me to other people. He does not care about his children’s welfare more than his own power. An example of that is when he recently got me fired from my job. He would rather show the world how powerful he is by the circle he runs in over making sure I have the financial ability to provide for our children. My fear has turned to an emotion where I want justice. Although I have seen some vicious things said about me, I have also seen some strangers support me. If strangers can support me, I do not feel so alone and I’m not going to be scared anymore. Victor accused me of “working with” someone to attack him. That is ridiculous. Much of what he has done is public record, so he can’t deny that. I’m attaching a photo of me from the day I went to the police after being abused by him. You can see the bruises for yourself, then maybe all of these people that he has fooled will open their eyes and see the truth. I am posting this fully aware that Victor or his “crew” may retaliate for my telling the truth as he has done so in the past but I can no longer remain silent to this abuse Our children and I have endured for all these years. I just pray that his retaliation will not hurt our children further. This is over, Victor. I’m fighting back. #MeToo" Additionally, in comments, witnesses came forward to verify her claim. This all came out after Victor was elected to the Central Committee. What should the party do?
Who's the best GM of all time? Just follow the bad trade chain.      Cache   Translate Page

Who’s the best general manager in the history of the NHL?

On the surface, that seems like the sort of question that we can’t really answer. You’ll have your opinion and I’ll have mine, and we can have fun debating it back and forth. But ultimately, it’s all a matter of opinion.

Or is it? When it comes to these sorts of questions, I’ve always been a big fan of stripping away emotion and hometown bias and going with a calculated, scientific approach. And there’s an opportunity to do that here, because part of a GM’s job involves occasionally going head-to-head with their colleagues. We can never read too much into a matchup between goalies or coaches or players, because the results will be determined by the rosters around them. But when GMs sit down to hammer out a trade, it’s just them. Just two men, locked in a battle of wits to see who can get the best of the other.

That should give us an opportunity to answer the question of who was the best in an objective way. All we need to do is go back through the trading records and see who got the best of who. After all, you can’t be the best GM ever if some other GM took you to the cleaners in a head-to-head matchup. We just need to work our way down the chain, looking for any trades that were clearly lopsided, and we’ll eventually get to an answer we can all agree on. It’s practically foolproof.

The only question is where to begin. That’s tricky, but I think there’s a logical answer: We start with the reigning GM of the Year. After all, if the league says a guy is the best in the business at this very moment, that seems like as good a place as any to start our search.

As it happens, the current GM of the Year is a legitimate contender for our Best Ever crown. That would be George McPhee, who won the 2018 award after working a near-miracle with the Golden Knights. He has nearly two decades of experience as an NHL GM, and he’s taken two teams to the Stanley Cup final. If you’re looking for someone to call the best, you could do a lot worse than George McPhee.

Except that for all McPhee’s success, he made one of the worst trades in recent history back in 2013, when he sent Filip Forsberg to the Predators for Martin Erat and a minor leaguer. It was a disastrous trade, as Forsberg quickly developed into one of the league’s best young wingers while Erat barely did anything in Washington. The deal has been referred to as a “dumpster fire”. And who was the GM who robbed McPhee blind in that deal? That would be David Poile.

So McPhee clearly can’t be the best GM ever. Instead, it’s Poile. See how this works? Simple and straightforward.

Except that while Poile certainly won his fair share of trades over his 36 years on the job, his record isn’t exactly spotless. Back in 1992, Poile was GM of the Capitals when he traded winger Dino Ciccarelli to the Red Wings in a straight-up deal for Kevin Miller. The 31-year-old Ciccarelli had scored over 100 goals in his three full seasons in Washington; he turned out to have over 160 more left in him, on the way to joining the 600-goal club and making the Hall of Fame. Miller lasted all of 10 games in Washington.

So sorry, David, you can’t be the best GM of all-time when you get robbed like that. Instead, we’ll hand those honors over to the man that fleeced you: Red Wings’ GM Bryan Murray.

Murray’s a solid pick; he was a GM for four different teams over the course of a quarter century. Unfortunately, he also had some shaky deals. Back in 2013, he traded Jakob Silfverberg, Stefan Noesen and a first-round pick to the Ducks in a deal for winger Bobby Ryan. That pick ended up being in the top 10, and the Ducks used it on Nick Ritchie. Meanwhile, Ryan has largely been a bust in Ottawa, and the team is currently trying to unload his massive contract. It was a clear loss for the Senators, and a win for Anaheim GM Bob “No Relation” Murray.

So Bryan can’t be our best-ever GM. But maybe Bob can be.

Unfortunately, the best GM ever wouldn’t have traded one of the top defensemen in the league without getting any impact assets back in return. That’s what Murray did back in 2009, when Paul Holmgren got him to part with Chris Pronger for the low price of Joffrey Lupul, Lucas Sbisa and two late first-round picks. Pronger immediately led the Flyers to within two wins of a championship, making the deal a big win for GM Paul Holmgren.

So Murray isn’t the best GM after all. Paul Holmgren is.

Except that he can’t be, because he once traded James van Riemsdyk to the Maple Leafs in a straight-up deal for Luke Schenn. That was a bad deal on the day it went down, and has been getting worse ever since. Schenn was barely a useful third-pairing guy, while van Riemsdyk had multiple 30-goal seasons in Toronto and just got a ton of money to come back to the Flyers. Chalk up a big win for Leafs GM Brian Burke.

So Holmgren is out. The best GM ever was actually Brian Burke.

How a longtime Democrat became Ronald Reagan’s biographer: Join a discussion with the author at the Oct. 11 Register Book Club      Cache   Translate Page

As author Bob Spitz wrapped up his biography on Julia Child, he started to ponder who he might choose for his next biography. He was looking for someone with the cultural heft and impact of the chef and TV personality – or of the Beatles and Bob Dylan, subjects of previous books.
“I realized there was a thread all the way through them and that was that the subjects were beloved and that they had changed the culture,” says Spitz, who will talk about his new book, “Reagan,” at a public event held by the Register Book Club on Thursday, Oct. 11.
So he pored over lists of estimable artists, such as recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors of the National Endowment of the Arts, but nothing sparked his interest.
“Then my wife said, ‘What about Ronald Reagan?’ and I said, ‘Absolutely not,’” Spitz says. “I’m a longtime Democrat. I don’t think I’ve ever voted for a Republican. I’m just not wired that way.
“And yet I realized the Beatles changed the way we listened to music,” he says. “Julia Child changed the way we lived. Ronald Reagan certainly changed the way Americans thought about their government.
“Reagan was a guy whose life framed the entire 20th century,” Spitz says. “When I thought about it, this was a man who lived a remarkable life. As someone who perhaps didn’t appreciate him beforehand, I felt that I could really learn something that would show me why he meant so much to so many people.”
So he began the work that would find him spending three years doing research, another two-and-a-half writing the book, and all of the time with an eye toward making his biography new and different and necessary for readers to pick up despite the many other books on the 40th president of the United States of America.
“There are two different ways I can answer that,” Spitz of how a biographer approaches an already familiar subject. “No. 1, I feel that a biography – in addition to being detailed – has to have a compelling narrative. And while I loved Lou Cannon’s books they’re basically policy wonk books, and ‘Dutch’ failed in a lot of different ways. Even though [‘Dutch’ author] Edmund Morris is a terrific biographer I don’t think he ever got a handle on Reagan.”
Spitz says he’d already been over this hurdle with his 2005 book “The Beatles: The Biography.” There were more than 800 books on the Beatles when he started that project, but once you weeded out the hagiographies, the fanboy books, the very narrowly focused slices of their career, there really weren’t that many single-volume biographies of the entire arc of the Beatles story.
His two models for Reagan were David McCullough’s “Truman” and Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith’s “Jackson Pollock: An American Saga,” both of them big books that sought to spin a comprehensive narrative “with an eye for the audience, so that the audience gets swept up,” Spitz says.
The other thing that helped make his “Reagan” different than those that came before was the passing of time, he says.
“I discovered that when people age into their ’60s and ’70s they’re more willing to talk about their lives and the people they represented,” Spitz says. “They want to get their stories down. So many people haven’t talked before but they had an eye on their biological clock and said, ‘Well, this guy came along at the right time.’
“And also, Reagan had died, so they could talk more freely,” he says.
Nancy Reagan, before her death, gave Spitz unprecedented access to Reagan’s private papers, something he says she’d never granted another writer. Members of his administration such as Robert McFarlane and John Poindexter spoke freely about the Iran-Contra scandal while lesser-known but significant figures, such as the doctors and nurses in the emergency room where Reagan was taken after an assassination attempt, talked in great detail about how much more serious that moment was than Americans were led to believe.
Spitz says one of his happiest days came on a trip to France when he called actress Olivia de Havilland, with whom he’d been corresponding in hopes of an interview, and the now-102-year-old Hollywood star agreed to let him stop by her Parisian apartment for champagne and canapes and to talk about her friendship with Reagan during his time making movies.
“I felt this was such a valuable piece of information to add to the Reagan canon,” he says. “Not only to understand how his career was slipping away at this time, but also how the goings-on at the time of the Hollywood blacklist and the Screen Actors Guild (of which Reagan was president) shifted him away from being a Democrat to being a conservative Republican.”
Spitz says that regardless of one’s feelings about Reagan, whether you voted for him or not, or endorsed or fought the policies he advocated during his eight years in the White House, the story of his life is one that anyone can appreciate.
“He led an incredible life that took him through five different careers,” he says, ticking off Reagan’s success as a popular radio star in the Midwest, as an actor and Screen Actors Guild president in Hollywood, as a national corporate spokesman for the powerful General Electric, as California governor, and finally, president.
“Reagan shaped the 1980s, and if you want to learn how that era affected all of us you can get it through his story,” Spitz says. “I say read this as kind of an adventure story and learn a little about this man who appealed to so many people.”

Comment on Vanderbilt: Anaheim’s District 2’s True Carpetbagger by Vern P Nelson      Cache   Translate Page
Hi Dan. I know you have me blocked from this blog, but it really looks like you need a little help here. First and most importantly, you have to stop using that cliché “over/under.” It does not mean what you think it means. It is a gambling term. You could look it up. It’s easy to fall into believing your own BS and that of your circle of friends, when it’s repeated enough. In this case I’m referring to the belief that I make very little money and live in my mother’s basement or something. Actually I’ve had a lot of musical work lately, I perform nearly every day, and I just recently made $2000 for writing one short song (for Taormina’s “Life Rebuilding Center.” So it wasn’t so hard for me to come up with $788, to make some signs I really believe in. It’s true that I have been talked into leading the Anaheim Democratic Club (yes, leading – Chairwoman Jeanette will be moving in a couple months.) But when I accepted the post I most definitely did not give up my freedom of speech 24-7. You may have noticed the signs do NOT read, at the bottom, “Paid for by the Anaheim Democratic Club.” When Jordan managed to get the DPOC endorsement, by making a list of promises to Jeff and Greg, I was pretty skeptical, but resolved to give him a chance. But every time I would ask him a perfectly reasonable question (I think, “What do you think Disney is really up to?”) he would just grin and repeat “It’s SO GOOD TO SEE YOU, VERN!” And I tried to get him to speak at council, in public, “so we can see what you really believe,” and he refused, saying he prefers to “speak to voters one on one.” On top of that he told everybody Disney is not supporting him now, and we’ve just discovered nearly $200K coming to him, from Disney, thru SOAR – his line now is “*I* can’t control what Disney does with their money!” So no, I don’t trust him. He tried to tell me last night that my signs are illegal, that I need to file with the FPPC. He probably knew that wasn’t true. As I spent well under $1000, I don’t have to do that. So then he changed his tune to “You’re a bad Democrat, Vern, I’m the endorsed candidate!” (Said the guy who endorses Republicans for breakfast.) It’s hilarious that you think the UNIONS (that must be UNITE HERE – Local 11) paid me for these signs. At least Gabriel’s a little closer to the truth. I purposely designed them, WITH Bushala, in Bushala’s trademark style, which has been 100% successful so far, and got a ride with Bushala to Bushala’s printer. He’s laughing his head off that you think the unions did that. If Jordan OR Harry OR Mitch wins, our town is in a world of S**T. I am doing my best here to protect our people’s majority from the greedy special interests. R vs D has nothing to do with Anaheim, and I could use some thanks for all the work I’m doing. “Vanderbilt is the real carpetbagger,” decrees the King of Whataboutism. You would never in a million years understand the sacrifice Vanderbilt made moving to district 2, and announcing it from the dais, on the day that Jordan was trying to undermine the People’s Map and delay district elections indefinitely … on the PRETEXT that James, living in district 3, was a LATINO (because his mom’s Chilean or something) and so the Latino District 3 already has a latino rep, and so district 3 doesn’t need to go till 2018. James turned all that upside down by moving (to a family place in district 2.) He HAD no other reason to move. Anaheim owes James big time for doing that. But somehow Jordan, who actually DID carpetbag, and did it at the last minute, is LESS of a carpetbagger than James because … Dan says so. I hope I helped clear up a few things here. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to run – I’m on KNX right now, explaining how Disney is once again funneling hundreds of thousands (eventually over a million) through front groups like SOAR and the Chamber to candidates like Jordan and to defeating the Living Wage. I’m sure you probably have something real important to do too. Bye now. Vern Nelson, Anaheim Voters Against Kleptocracy.

Disneyland officially cancels its fourth on-site hotel      Cache   Translate Page
By Robert Niles: The Walt Disney Company officially is throwing in the towel on its planned fourth on-site hotel for the Disneyland Resort, abandoning its previously announced plans to develop a luxury hotel on the what has been the western edge of Downtown Disney.

"We’ve taken the time to review the economics of our proposed Four Diamond hotel for Anaheim and have made the final decision to cancel the project," a Disney spokesperson said in a email to Theme Park Insider. "While this is disappointing for many, the conditions and agreements that stimulated this investment in Anaheim no longer exist and we must therefore adjust our long-term investment strategy."

Originally, Disney proposed the fourth hotel to take advantage of a City of Anaheim tax incentive for building four-star hotels within the city. But when Disney killed its Western Gateway project after local opposition to that plan for a new highway entryway to the resort, it moved the site for its fourth hotel slightly to the south, to make way for a second parking garage on the former site of the Pinocchio surface lot, south of the Mickey and Friends parking garage.

The City of Anaheim decided that change in address reflected a substantial change in hotel project, especially since it meant the closure of several Downtown Disney businesses, including the movies theaters and four restaurants. So the city pulled the tax incentive from the project, which led to Disney putting the hotel project "on hold."

Meanwhile, labor activists succeeded in getting an initiative on the local ballot that would have mandated a substantial minimum wage increase for any Anaheim employer who was receiving tax incentives from the city. After Anaheim pulled the tax incentive from the fourth hotel project, Disney announced that it would give up all tax incentives from the city. This week, Anaheim officials ruled that Disney would be exempt from the minimum wage initiative, should it pass.

And now, after re-running the numbers on the hotel without the tax break, Disney has decided to kill the project that started this whole saga.

So what will happen to all those now-shuttered businesses on the west side of Downtown Disney? Earl of Sandwich reopened earlier this month. But beyond that, Disney had not committed to anything. At this point, it seems that it is up to Walt Disney Imagineering and Disney's development teams to come up with some new dining, retail, or entertainment options to replace those that have left the shopping complex.

All we know is... for now at least... it won't be a hotel going in on that site.
