We noticed that it took Fusion 360 a couple seconds to react to whether you were trying to show or hide a complex part via the visibility toggle in the browser. We smoothed out some kinks and now visibility toggling now happens a lot faster.
- Faster Edit Form performance in T-Splines
Now when you initiate Edit Form tool to manipulate your T-Spline body, you should notice that we’ve improved the speed at which the body updates as you drag those manipulators. Should feel more snappier now.
- Surface Stitch stability
We’ve been seeing a large number of crash issues related to stitching surfaces with the Stitch command. Good news! We’ve finally been able to track down the culprit that has been causing all these issues and locked it away for good. Fusion 360 should no longer crash during stitching operations.
- Construction plane reliability
There was a weird issue where if you tried to apply a construction plane on an edge of the part, rotate the plane to a certain angle, then selected another edge, cancelled the command immediately, and proceeded to perform the same actions as before over and over, Fusion 360 would eventually lose patience and give up on you. Not cool. Now it knows to be more patient.
- "Center Two Point Arc Slot" is now called "Center Point Arc Slot"
Why? Because we felt the "two" was too redundant, which consequently made the whole name more wordy. Center Point Arc Slot is just as clear.

A new innovative learning lab opened Oct. 3 at Whitewater Middle.  A result of Verizon's vision and partnership, it offers students a bright, modern 3,000-square-foot area where they can collaborate, create, communicate, think critically and solve problems — all necessary skills in today's learning environment.

Whitewater is one of six schools in CMS that have been part of Verizon Innovative Learning since 2016. Now, it is one of the first two middle schools in the country to have an innovative learning lab. The project started 18 months ago with the Verizon Foundation's education program team. The team visited labs and makerspaces at leading universities such as Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York University and the University of Virginia to ensure that the new lab would be of the highest caliber. 

"Research has shown that maker-centered learning helps students develop ingenuity and flexibility, as well as self-confidence and a sense of community," said Principal Beth Thompson. "Let's take virtual reality as an example. We don't know everything that can be done with that technology yet, but we can teach it and let our students' minds take us to where it can go. That is the power of having this space. We can have 'what if' moments every day."

The lab's focus is on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) — a perfect match for Whitewater, which is an environmental STEM-themed school. The lab features such technology as augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR), coding and circuits, 3D design and sound production. There is also write-on wall paint throughout the space, interactive monitors and two adjoining classrooms.

"I love this lab. I'm an artsy type of guy so the 3D printer is cool," said Jeffrey Hairston Jr., a seventh-grader. "It's hands-on, so it won't get boring either."

Seventh-grader Sumayyah Muhammad-Bouaoud and eighth-grader Marco Castillo agree that the virtual reality is one of the biggest hits among students.

"When I'm using the AR/VR I don't have to design things on paper. I'm drawing, building and moving my creations in real time to see how they work," said Sumayyah.

Eighth-graders Jakob Yang and Antonio Nie sat at a table with a case full of circuits and other materials that could be used for making games, robots, alarms and sensors. They were building and programming a car. Nearby, another set of students were making an alarm.

"There was a time when we were one of the lowest-growth schools in the district and many thought we couldn't improve. In the last four years, we have exceeded growth, proving our students are capable," said Thompson. "This lab is another resource that gives them an opportunity to explore and experience the endless possibilities that technology provides in and outside of the classroom."

          Fabricating a 3D printed sculpture to withstand Times Square      Cache   Translate Page      

Formlabs, a 3D printing technology developer and manufacturer, was faced with fabricating a 3D printed sculpture for Times Square. The challenge: it was to be installed for one month in the winter. It had to stand up to cold, wind, water, UV exposure, and New York City crowds.

Alongside design studio Aranda\Lasch and engineering firm LaufsED, they created Window to the Heart. The Formlabs team was able to print and finish 1,000 tiles, and assemble and adhere them together to become the final 10-by-12-foot installation in the heart of Times Square.

Designing for wind is a core aspect of any structural engineering endeavor. Times Square is an especially tricky location because it is an intersection where several wind tunnels meet. And the standard engineering procedure is to make sure that the safety factors can withstand the wind speeds from 100-year wind speed data.

Abstract

Background

Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology is used widely in dentistry for applications including implant surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthognathic surgery, endodontics and prosthodontics. Using a 3D-printed template makes performing the repair procedure faster and more convenient. The aesthetic restoration of anterior teeth can recover facial beauty, enhance speaking and chewing functions and improve the quality of life of the patient.

Case presentation

This article describes two kinds of clinical cases including fractured teeth and dental caries. In both, a 3D-printed template was used for direct resin composite restoration of maxillary central incisors. A 3D-printed template was built using the following 3-step process: data acquisition was conducted via intra-oral scanning, virtual modeling was performed using an imaging process, and manufacturing was performed using a 3D printer. Aesthetically restoring the maxillary incisors with the assistance of the 3D-printed template achieved the anticipated results, and the patients were very satisfied with the effect.

Conclusions

The direct resin composite restoration of maxillary central incisors using a 3D-printed template represents a rapid, convenient, aesthetic and functional option for treating maxillary central incisors. A 3D-printed template is therefore an acceptable and reliable alternative to traditional direct composite restoration of maxillary central incisors including fractured teeth and dental caries.

WHAT IS AGEC?
In a nutshell, the Allan Gray Entrepreneurship Challenge is a competition that gamifies learning about entrepreneurship for high school learners in Grades 8 to 12 in South Africa. The challenges are designed to engage participants to act and think like entrepreneurs and rewards those who finish among the top performers.

GAMEPLAY
#AGEC18 runs for 6 weeks, from 1 August to 12 September. Each week learners log on to the AGEC website or mobile app and complete a series of micro-challenges. These challenges take 15-60min to complete depending on their complexity. Leaderboards mean that progress can be tracked by individual performance, classes (for Partner Schools) and schools.

EARNING POINTS
Each challenge has a maximum number of points that can be earned for completing it. Depending on the complexity of the challenge it is worth more or less points. Easier challenges need to be completed in order to unlock the higher value, more difficult challenges.

MARKING AND MODERATION
Challenges are marked by multiple other participating learners with the help of marking rubrics. Points are earned and lost by each marker depending on how close their assessment is to the final mark awarded. If the marks awarded by various learners vary too greatly then a moderator assesses the submission and makes a final decision of the mark to be awarded.

TYPES OF CHALLENGES
Through #AGEC18 participants are exposed to useful mindsets, habits and concepts for entrepreneurs. These include exposure to exponential technologies such as Blockchain, Digital Biology, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things or 3D Printing. Some challenges include uploading images, some are theoretical and some require action.

AWARDS CEREMONY
On Thursday 11 October a spectacular awards ceremony will be held in Johannesburg to celebrate the top performers of #AGEC18. Awards will be made to the top individuals, classes, teachers and schools. This will be an evening not to be missed, and just one of the reasons to work hard for one of the top spots.

• Schools that want to encourage a culture of entrepreneurship in their communities
• Teachers, parents, and alumni who want to support a spirit of entrepreneurship in the school can get involved by encouraging learners to sign up and complete challenges

Learners anywhere in the country, at any high school registered with the Department of Basic Education or any home school, may register and compete in the Allan Gray Entrepreneurship Challenge. Hey everyone! This may or may not be useful to you depending on how you organize your Innovations (unlocked) during a game, but I whipped this up yesterday at lunch as I've been meaning to do something like this for a while. If you have a 3d printer, please give them a shot!

You can print as many of these as you need, then just put as many as you are using at a time. You can expand them as much as you want. They are sized for FFG Green sleeves (60mm wide is the space on the holder). I'm not sure the dimensions on any of the other popular sleeves, so I don't know if they will fit them.

I read about artificial intelligence software that can rival high school juniors armed with #2 pencils. The program attacked SAT math questions and performed at the level of a typical 11th grader. The study was too complex for me to grasp. I guess I should ask an 11th grader for assistance. Artificial intelligence is well beyond conventional computational exercises. It can think.

Increasingly, we see functions executed by machines that were formerly performed by living breathing human beings. Examples range from the mundane to the preternatural.
• Order food and drink from an iPad. No server needed.
• Driverless auto travel. This may lead to a resurgence in prayer.
• Pilotless air travel. Hard times ahead for the Airline Pilots Association.
• Making precision tools from 3D printers.
• Gourmet meals created with a voice activated command.
• Theater and film productions starring faux actors created on keyboards.

Will artificial intelligence invade the medical arena? The question is only how deeply it will invade. The role of the traditional physician is at risk of being marginalized as computer software hits the profession hard. Sure, computers cannot palpate an abdomen or perform a rectal exam yet, but they can listen to heart sounds with much greater accuracy than a physician with a stethoscope can. Additionally, as most practicing physicians know, the physical examination is much less useful than the patient's medical history, although our medical school teachers and mentors always preached how critical the physicians' eyes, ears and hands were. Most doctors know what's going on most of the time after carefully listening to the patient's story, the medical history.

I know that sophisticated computer algorithms can synthesize an individual's personal medical data and generate specific diagnoses, many of which might not have been considered by a human physician. Of course, there's a lot more to being a decent physician than spitting out a list of diagnoses, as we doctors know despite when empowered patients bring us lists of diseases they think they have after spending some time in the Google School of Medicine.

Although artificial intelligence is not a real doctor, it offers an incredible tool for the medical profession to serve the public. For example, if a 50-year-old man who has just returned from rural Kenya comes to see me with diarrhea, a 7-pound weight loss, vision change, fever, and a rash, I may not be able to provide an instantaneous diagnosis. If I could plug the patient's profile with his symptoms into a computer program, along with various laboratory features and photograph of the rash and the retina, it might alert me to diagnostic possibilities that are beyond my reach.

Let's say that a machine outperforms me on my medical board certification exam. If you could only see one of us, which of us would you choose?

These are the settings we have used to get perfect prints on our printers. Printers vary as do different types of filaments and how prints behave in different types of weather! I also, highly recommend using Hatchbox PLA. It may cost a bit more but it’s 100% worth it. Seriously.

My first job was in Black & Decker's industrial division, specifically the "Advanced Concepts Group." Our job was to design new tools that represented new directions for the company. This was in 1980. Black & Decker's first cutoff saw and first big plumber's drill came out of that group while I was there (I had nothing to do with either project).

There was, and probably still is, a huge disconnect over what was taught in Engineering School and what you actually needed to know to hold down a job at a manufacturing company. I had just graduated and was young and green. I was assigned the task of designing a vacuum attachment for a masonry drill bit. We currently stock the Festool equivalent of these drills, but in those days they were big, noisy, and messy. It was either Hilti or Bosch that had just introduced a vacuum cleaner attachment for the rather large drill bits that the drills used, and Black & Decker was not going to be left behind.

The problem was, the competitor's design was patented. I needed to understand the patent (which I could do) and come up with a better, non-infringing alternative (not so easy). The result wasn't guaranteed to hit the market, but the engineering department needed to be prepared if the existing product took off and marketing wanted a quick response.

I don't remember the details of the project, but I know it never saw the light of day. It was a big deal for me personally since it was the first time something I drew up became a prototype. The project was canceled just when I got the prototypes but before we ever found out if the prototype worked. (I think it would have worked but have been pretty clunky.)

In any case, this was long before 3D printing and CAD, so with guidance I drew out a design that was given to a patternmaker for making a mold to be test cast in aluminum.

Pattern making! In the factory where I worked, Black & Decker maintained two large machine shops and a small pattern shop. Unlike the machine shops, the patternmaking shop was mostly precision woodworking. This was the only time in my life where I saw woodworking as a science. When you make furniture, things are mostly square. Cabinetmakers have to account for wood movement, but as long as the piece doesn't split apart, the actual measurement isn't that precise. Patternmakers have to work to extreme levels of precision. The patterns need to take wood movement into account and generally create molds that can come apart and be precisely reassembled. The skill level needed was huge. My little nozzle that was designed by a green engineer needed to be re-engineered and sculpted in wood and wax by a highly experienced and trained patternmaker. Because it was a small project, the job was outsourced to a trusted third party whom I never met. If I remember correctly, his name was Herman Egan. I was told he was top notch and perfect for this sort of small, tricky project. I designed the nozzle but had nothing to do with the pattern design or figuring out how to make it.

The project was canceled, and when I left B&D the patterns came with me. They are a work of art.

Let me see if I can explain how this all works succinctly enough so you make it to the end of the page.

This is what we are trying to make. It needs some machining, but what you have is an aluminum nozzle that is hollow in the inside and also has an undercut on the outside of the nozzle so that the air flow is smooth. If this prototype were to go to real production, it would be a plastic die-cast piece. These days, using a CNC milling machine we could easily machine a prototype out of a solid block, or 3D print it out of plastic. In 1980 machining the complex curves was nearly impossible to manually machine so the decision was made to cast the prototype.

The way sand casting works is the patternmaker makes a positive object that is placed in a bed of wet sand and then removed, forming a cavity that is filled with molten metal. The metal shrinks a bit on cooling, so the pattern needs to be slightly larger than the final product to account for this shrinkage. If the object being made has holes, undercuts, or hollows after the main pattern is removed from the sand, the patternmaker will need to make and install cores (made of clay and sand) in the sand to keep the holes and hollows from filling with metal. The patternmaker is responsible for making the wooden pattern for the main object and the "core boxes" that are filled to form the cores. Mahogany is often used (especially on small patterns like these) because it is easy to carve, holds details, and is fairly dimensionally stable (and augmented with glued-up sections to make it even more dimensionally stable). While small, the pattern for this nozzle has two cores and a follow piece, making it a pretty complicated mold.

The main nozzle is precision turned and glued together with the nozzle outlet that was turned and carved separately. The two spuds on the top of the main pattern are extra and and hold the two cores in place. The first step in casting the nozzle is to put the nozzle flat on a board with the undercut piece. The undercut piece was carefully carved and fitted to fit over the rear fin and rounded hose bottom. Sand gets poured over the entire object and rammed tight. Then the mold is turned over and the undercut piece is removed.

Both the pattern and undercut pieces have little holes on the bottom so the foundry can screw in a rod and lift out the two parts. With the undercut piece removed, sand is pour unto the space created and over the bottom of the nozzle. The two halves of the mold are separated and the red main pattern is removed. What we have is now a negative imprint of the nozzle in the sand.

While this is going on, a clay-based core material is forced into the two core boxes. The box coxes are also mahogany, glued up for stability. The two halves have registration pins drilled through from the bottom so they the halves align properly. The insides were turned and then a bit of wood glued in. The spiral channel then carved to make the shapes. In order to get a good stable glue joint, the grain of the built up piece is aligned with the outer material. In the pictures you can also see the layout and scribe lines used to do this accurately.

The second core for the inside of the hose part is made the same way, with a glued up block and three registration pins. The core tapers in at the end so that is registers with the mold and that tapering suggests to me that the entire groove was carved by hand.

Unfortunately I don't have any cores.

By the way, the box in the back of the group picture is what I kept the pattern and parts in since 1981. I think I left the hot pot behind.

Since the 1980's this type of patternmaking has been done less and less. Wooden patternmaking is largely a thing of the past. This project would be 3D printed directly from a CAD system. Sand casting is still done, but the patterns in many cases are CNC machined from plastics, styrofoam and other synthetic materials, not wood. The huge range of specialty patternmaking tools - such as long patternmaker's scribing gouges - are no long made. Scribing gouges differ from carving gouges in that carving gouges are shaped with an arbitrary "U" shaped curve. Scribing gouges were readily available in specific curvatures in with both the bevel on the outside (out-cannel) or on the inside (in-cannel).

          Industrial Design Students: You Should Build This Combination Light, Shelf and Power Unit For Your Dorm Room       Cache   Translate Page      

As I mentioned in our post on ID student dorm rooms, your dorm should look vastly different than that of other majors', as you should be hacking the heck out of that space, given your education and facilities access.

Two areas where standard dorm rooms always fall short is light and power. While all dorms provide desks, few provide task lighting for said desks, and you can never have enough power outlets. So this Makers Light, Shelf & Power Box by Instructables user TechKiwiGadgets would be the perfect thing to build for your room.

It's simple to make, useful and easily customizable; it wouldn't take much imagination to add a headphones holder, storage for drawing implements or cable management. Depending on what equipment your school's ID shop offers, you could make the components for this out of wood, plastic or metal using conventional tools, or you could get fancier if your shop has a CNC mill, 3D printer and/or laser cutter.
