Adobe Announces Updates for Premiere Pro, After Effects, Character Animator and Audition      Cache   Translate Page
Ahead of the 2018 International Broadcasting Convention that kicks off later this week, Adobe today shared details on updates that are coming to Premiere Pro, After Effects, Character Animator, and Audition.

Premiere Pro, Adobe's video editing software for professionals, is gaining new Motion Graphics templates and support for infographics created by dragging and dropping spreadsheet files into the Motion Graphics interface.

New Reduce Noise and Reduce Reverb sliders have been added to the Essential Sound panel, the Lumetri color panel features Selective Color Grading tools for more precise color editing, and there's a new Timecode shortcut entry.

Other new features include support for Google VR 180, Spatial Markers for easier editing of VR content, and a Theatre Mode for working within the Adobe Immersive Environment. Performance improvements have also been included, with hardware-based encoding and decoding for H.264 and HEVC along with improved image processing.

After Effects, used by designers to create motion graphics, is gaining simplified authoring for streamlined content editing, font controls for quickly changing fonts, new selective color grading tools for Lumetri Color, and new in-app learning tools for those who are new to After Effects.

Advanced Puppet pins for the Mesh Sculpting feature let users define position, scale, and rotation for a pin, offering better control for more organic movements, while a new Javascript engine enables faster expressions and Depth Passes allows for 3D objects to be positioned in space to add dimensional elements to videos.

There's a new native Mocha plug-in for After Effects, along with end-to-end support for VR 180, H.264 and HEVC video support on macOS, and performance and GPU optimizations to improve effects like Fill, Curves, Exposure, and Noise.

Audition includes new DeReverb and DeNoise effects for removing background noise and reverb with support for real-time adjustments, a revamped multitrack feature, one-click session management, and more.

Character Animator is gaining the Characterizer, a feature first unveiled at Adobe Max. Characterizer lets users import art and then record words and facial expressions to generate a new, unique character, automatically creating a puppet in just a few seconds.

Character Animator is also getting Replays for reusing facial expressions and signature moves, Magnets for letting puppets interact with objects, improved walk behavior, and a squashiness parameter for the physics behaviors.

Full details on all of the new features coming to Adobe's Premiere Pro, After Effects, Character Animator, and Audition software can be found on Adobe's website.

Adobe plans to roll out these Creative Cloud updates later in 2018.

Hurricane Florence could hit parts of North Carolina with up to 13 feet of storm surge and 40 inches of rain — here's what that much water actually looks like      Cache   Translate Page

hurricane florence

  • Hurricane Florence is heading for the Carolinas, where it's forecasted to bring devastating storm surge and rainfall.
  • Some parts of the coastal Carolinas could see up to 13 feet of storm surge, while isolated pockets of North Carolina could see up to 40 inches of rainfall.
  • Experts and officials urged residents to leave if they're in a mandatory-evacuation zone.

Hurricane Florence is hurtling toward the Carolinas, bringing with it potentially catastrophic rainfall, storm surge, and flooding.

Though the hurricane has been downgraded to a Category 3, the National Hurricane Center has issued hurricane and storm surge warnings for much of the coastline across North Carolina and South Carolina, and expects life-threatening conditions in the coming days.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has ordered 1 million people to evacuate the area, and leaders have urged coastal residents not to try and ride out the storm.

"This storm is a monster. It's big and it's vicious. It is an extremely dangerous, life-threatening, historic hurricane," North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper warned residents during a news conference on Wednesday.

Read more: Why Florence is expected to bring so much rain

"You have to listen and get out," President Donald Trump said from the Oval Office. "Because once the storm hits, it's going to be really bad, and almost impossible to get authorities in to help."

Coastal areas between Cape Fear to Cape Lookout, North Carolina could see as much as 9 to 13 feet of storm surge if the storm hits there at high tide. Storm surge is the term for the rapid rise in water that a hurricane's high winds push onto shore.

And the rains will likely be intense, too. Forecasters are predicting 20 to 30 inches of rain for coastal North Carolina, with some isolated areas seeing up to 40 inches — that's 3.3 feet.

Here's what those measurements would look like on the ground:

hurricane florence potential destruction infographic

The National Weather Service has also warned residents that conditions will still be dangerous even in the areas that won't see the worst of the storm.

"I can't emphasize enough the potential for unbelievable damage from wind, storm surge, and inland flooding with this storm," an NWS spokesperson said Tuesday night.

Officials have warned people not to try to get around in vehicles or on foot once the storm makes landfall, and to stay out of flooded roadways.

Even wading through just six inches of moving water can sweep you off your feet, and vehicles don't fare much better.

The typical car will float away in just 18 to 24 inches of moving water, while trucks and SUVs can't withstand more than 24 to 36 inches of water, according to the NWS.

Officials say the best way people can avoid life-threatening situations is to leave if their region is under a mandatory-evacuation order, and to get to higher ground if flooding occurs.

3 Tips to Maximize the Impact of Immersive Technology in the Classroom      Cache   Translate Page
3 Tips to Maximize the Impact of Immersive Technology in the Classroom eli.zimmerman_9856 Wed, 09/12/2018 - 14:24

Immersive technologies such as virtual reality and 3D scanning are becoming so hot that educators across the country are beginning to roll them out for students of all ages.

The problem is that, while technologies blending elements of the physical and digital worlds in simulated environments offer enormous academic value, too many institutions fall prey to what I call the “buy it and forget it” approach

This is a syndrome where administrators and others with purchasing power in educational institutions become so enamored with the novelty of new technology they decide they just need to have it — even if they do not completely understand why.

In our personal lives, we are all prone to this behavior. A few years ago, for example, I recall seeing many people getting excited about the glitzy 3D television sets on store shelves in Costco.

They dropped thousands of dollars, loaded them onto carts and proudly wheeled them out the door to their eagerly awaiting families. Only later did many of these customers realize they would need better 3D headsets to have a passable viewing experience, and there was not much 3D programming on the air to justify the money they spent.

Education technology purchasing is similar. Schools and universities have an unfortunate track record of laying out billions of dollars on bleeding-edge technologies that never quite take off and, as a result, never get used for any truly meaningful academic purposes.

As education professionals, we cannot afford these types of wasteful mistakes with immersive technology because there is just too much at stake — too much opportunity to enhance, enrich and accelerate learning in unprecedented ways. For immersive technology to get there, it is vital to have a strategic plan that identifies why it is being considered, whom it will benefit and what metrics will be applied to demonstrate success.

Your plan should ultimately address how much students will learn because of this technology, rather than in spite of it. Once an organization has a plan, knows roughly which technologies it needs and how they will be applied, then it is time to consider how to deploy them most effectively. Here are three tips to help:

INFOGRAPHIC: See how augmented reality can provide students with more interactive experiences!

1. Prioritize Great Digital Content to Increase Impact

As with 3D TVs, a key to using immersive technology effectively is having plenty of content for it. But publishers are typically a few years behind the adoption curve, and most have been focused on creating immersive experiences that mirror what younger generations experience in their personal lives, meaning they are more about entertainment and games than true education. Publishers will eventually improve their offerings, but universities do not have to wait.

The beauty of immersive technology is that it enables professors and students to collaboratively create their own digital learning scenarios. For instance, suppose a biology professor has a physical model of a human heart that he or she can separate into pieces. With existing technology, this professor can scan each of those pieces into a computer and share the digital objects with students who can then handle and even 3D-print them.

Suddenly, you are not only teaching students about organs; you are creating a lasting, digital learning exercise that can be shared in future projects. Students will have constant access to freshly created, fully interactive and remarkably compelling projects that can be shared, discussed and worked on with hundreds of other students through global digital communities.

2. Tell Stories More Simply Through Interactive Experiences

Storytelling is one of the oldest and most effective learning tools we have ever known. If you make it part of immersive technology, you can amplify educational opportunities in incredible ways.

Not so long ago, I remember hearing how young students were beginning to do class presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint. While many of us might be exhausted by slide presentations now, at the time of their inception, the technology felt pretty novel.

Today, we have a powerful opportunity to put immersive technology to work as a tool for telling compelling and memorable learning-based stories in the classroom. Imagine, for example, a history professor trying to describe what life was like in ancient Rome.

Rather than simply projecting a few photographs shot decades ago of the ancient ruins of Pompeii, it would be just as possible to illustrate how families lived with a virtual tour, walking students through the ruins of a home, progressing down the cobblestone street to the site of a market, stable, doctor’s office or spa.

3. Do Not Forget to Invest in Professional Development

One of the most important things I can tell you about deploying immersive technology in institutions is that you shouldn’t do it alone. There is too much room for error. As a rule of thumb, plan on spending $1 on professional development for every $1 budgeted on technology. This is a very new field, and you should not leave adoption to chance. Bring on experts.

Maximize the odds your deployment will be successful by tapping the experience of others. In the long run, all these tips should help educators apply immersive technology in ways that will stimulate students to be more engaged and truly shine. It all starts with a strategic plan. If done right, the only limit to success will your imagination.

How to Reach the Hidden Market of Baby Boomer Women      Cache   Translate Page

Are you among the 91 percent of marketers ignoring a massive consumer demographic with trillions of dollars to spend? Unless you’re marketing to baby boomer women, the answer is yes.

Baby boomer women (currently aged between 54 and 72), account for more than half of the 78 million baby boomers. The net worth of women aged 50+ is $19 trillion. They’re also poised to inherit even more money from their parents: Boomer women are projected to control two-thirds of all consumer wealth over the next decade.

Here’s what boomer women are doing, what they want and how to reach them.

81170675_s.jpg

Embracing technology

Tech adoption rates among boomers have soared in recent years. Nearly seven in 10 boomers own smartphones, 52 percent own tablets, and 57 percent use social media. A whopping 94 percent of boomer women shop online.

Life transitions

Some boomer women are still in the “sandwich generation,” caring for both children and aging parents. Convenience is paramount for this demographic, especially if they work outside the home, and they’ll spend more for products and services that save them precious time.

Other boomer women, with adult children finally out of the nest, have more time and financial resources to devote to themselves. Still others are single for the first time in decades: The divorce rate among adults age 50+has doubled since 1995.

Hot products and services for boomer women

  • Travel: Regardless of where they go, whom they’re going with, or who’s paying, women make 80 percent of all travel decisions. They’re also more likely to travel solo than men. Consider offering women-only tours where solo female travelers can make new friends; “girlfriend” travel packages for women traveling with friends or daughters; or couples’ packages for empty-nesters revitalizing their relationships.

  • Fashion: Nearly seven in 10 boomer women believe the fashion industry ignores them; 82 percent say apparel for women their age is too old-fashioned. Take a cue from the profitability of plus-sized clothing: If you can take the physical changes of age into account and sell clothing that’s good-quality, flattering and current, you’ve got a ready market.

  • Health and fitness: Boomer women want to stay active and fit, but they’re not up for hard-core boot camps. Instead, try personal training and low-impact fitness regimens like Pilates, barre and yoga.

  • Financial planning: Boomer women need expert guidance for managing they money they control; divorcees need help navigating a new financial reality. Financial planners that cater to women instead of assuming men control the finances will find success.

Read more: Women and Financial Wellness: Beyond the Bottom Line

  • Adult education: Whether finally indulging a passion for watercolor painting, learning Italian or prepping for a late-life career change, boomer women are eager to learn new skills and rediscover old hobbies.

Marketing do’s and don’ts

Try these tips to market to boomer women.

  • Keep it real. Most ads portray boomers either as frail seniors who can’t work a cell phone, or uber-fit triathletes. Avoid these extremes and use realistic images of boomer women in your advertising.
  • When choosing images, keep in mind boomers tend to see themselves as 10 years younger than they are—but not 20 or 30 years younger. Avoid teenagers and 20-somethings as models.
  • Use imagery of boomer women
  • Target peers. Boomer women get their beauty information from friends and family, consumer reviews, and lifestyle and beauty blogs. Use social media and online review sites to spread word-of-mouth about your business.
  • Understand how women buy. According to Marti Barletta, an expert in marketing to women, women tend to have a longer sales cycle and ask more questions about products and services. Provide plenty of details and be patient. Check out more articles about marketing.

Embrace Instability for the Digital World      Cache   Translate Page

In 1997, Netflix began mailing DVDs to people’s homes, disrupting the traditional video rental industry. In 2007, it launched a streaming service. In 2013, the company began producing its own content. In the amount of time it would take a traditional company to scale one version of itself, Netflix scaled up three versions.

Netflix jumps the innovation S-curve in research by Graham P. Waller, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner.

Netflix was set up for venture scaling. The business was designed to optimize the existing business model to enable rapid innovations. This meant also having an enterprise capable of repeatedly jumping s-curves to new business models.

What is venture scaling?

Venture scaling is a combination of continuous innovation and rapidly scaling winning ideas to drive material business outcomes. Enterprises are good at coming up with ideas, but not great at scaling up those ideas to the point of financial returns.

“Only companies with venture-scaling capability will survive a challenge from the likes of Amazon, Netflix, Alibaba or Tencent,” says Graham P. Waller, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner.

Enterprises should be deliberately designed to be unstable. Traditional industrial businesses were designed with stability in mind, but that leaves them unable to quickly respond in a digital world.

Change your center of gravity

Think about digital business as it compares to breakthrough performance improvements in modern fighter jets. For decades, traditional combat planes were designed with a central tenet of aerodynamic stability. However, in a modern fighter jet the center of gravity is shifted backward, making the design inherently aerodynamically unstable. But it’s that instability that allows the plane the advantage of being able to turn sharply. Fighter jets are able to maneuver so quickly that pilots depend on a fly-by-wire system to maintain a stable flight.

[swg_ad]

When applied to a business, this means that the “center of gravity” — the ability to make decisions — moves from the top of the chart down to the product/platform team. This enables the business to venture scale and move quickly in the marketplace. Just as sticking to an old design principle for stability would have been dangerous in aircraft, this design in business thwarts new ventures. Changes to the core seem to threaten established structure and processes, but enterprises that cling to industrial-era tenets won’t be able to respond to disruptors or digital business.

Embrace the instability

The goals is to adopt a new management mindset and an organizational capability to adapt to the changing world of digital business. Organizations built specifically for stability won’t survive the digital business era. Executives might cite barriers to success such as culture, resources and talent, but those are only barriers for enterprises trapped in an industrial-era mindset.

Identify other enterprises that have moved in this direction as examples that it can be done successfully and form a plan for your enterprise to take small steps toward a new design.

Library Treasure Hunt 2018      Cache   Translate Page
Two weeks ago, I had a library treasure hunt with our grade 9s. This is already in the running for three years with the help of the Comparative Religions (CRe) teacher. We have made improvements since then. Sharing with you my reflections on the experience.

1. The session was a good follow up to the library orientation given to grade 9 students during Foundation Week. They had hands-on activities on the use of the OPAC and the three IB recommended databases that we are subscribed to. Each form of media was introduced as access to sources and information. I also mentioned that their academic integrity increases when they use library resources because these are selected based on reviews and recommendations from teachers who are knowledgeable of the IB and DepEd curriculum.

2. Students had hands-on activities on the use of search terms(keyword) and Boolean strategy on the databases, OPAC and different search engines. They were asked to evaluate Google with another search engine based on three criteria, namely design, navigation and search engine results page. Unlike the two search strategies, this was not further discussed during the session when we talked about their answers.

3. Citation exercises were provided to students using web apps and citation builders. During the second session, the five fundamental bibliographic data were introduced: author, title, publisher, place of publication, copyright/year of publication, plus, format (print, digital, etc.) as key elements of a citation. The students were given books to locate these information. These books were all taken from 200-299 division of the General Collection. In library work, these five plus one data are a librarian's basis for OPVL. It leads a librarian to pursue further questions on the document's origin, history and relevance.

I think, what's good about this experience is the provision for schema development and activation, and priming of skills. Before doing research on a CRe topic, students were given an experience of the library as a learning environment where formal and non-formal instruction on research and IL skills happen. As a librarian, I am part of the students' learning journey. I am a partner and "sidekick" to the teacher who plans her lessons and sets out to deliver the learning objectives.

Going back to two years ago, the English teacher asked me to do a session on search strategies and narrowing of topics for her grade 9 English class. We did mind mapping, keyword and Boolean searching. I was able to re-introduce our subscriptions as well as other media formats like maps, photos, paintings, kits, games posters, infographics, podcasts and the like as sources of information. It was only in passing that I told the class that each media format needs a set criteria when evaluation its purpose and credibility and that, these sources can be used in specific topics, research question or academic task.

Hurricane Florence could dump up to 40 inches of rain on parts of the Carolinas — here's why the deluge may be so intense      Cache   Translate Page

hurricane florence storm space satellite rammb jira goes 16 noaa

  • Hurricane Florence, a category 4 storm, is approaching the coast of the Carolinas. Its effects are expected to be felt in the area starting Thursday.
  • Forecasters predict the storm will slow down considerably as it approaches the shore, coming close to a standstill and dumping as much as 40 inches of rain.
  • That could prompt deadly floods.
  • Climate scientists say Florence's behavior isn't an anomaly — hurricanes are getting wetter and slower. Here's why.

Hurricane Florence is bearing down on the US East Coast, bringing 125 mph winds, a life-threatening storm surge, and extremely heavy rain.

The storm's center is expected to make landfall near the border between North and South Carolina. Its extreme winds and storm surge could be devastating, as a wall of water 13 feet high in some spots pushes its way into the shore.

But the worst impact of the storm may actually come from the rain.

The National Hurricane Center predicts that the storm will get stuck over North and South Carolina all weekend, stalling over portions of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia until Sunday morning. Projections suggest Florence will inch its way west over the weekend, with its eye taking two full days to drift from the coast into central North Carolina.

During that time, up to 40 inches of rain could fall over parts of North Carolina's coast, prompting immense floods. Even areas as far inland as Charlotte and Raleigh could get up to 10 inches of rain.

Several factors are combining to create this worrisome situation: a high-pressure ridge of calmer weather is developing over the Ohio Valley, and ocean and air temperatures are higher than average.

Why Florence will get stuck

High-pressure ridges form when warm air in the upper atmosphere descends toward the Earth, making for clear, cloudless skies. This provides a natural barrier for swirling storms like Florence.

"Hurricanes cannot plow through regions of high pressure, they prefer to go around them," James Done, an atmospheric scientist from the National Center for Atmospheric Research, told Business Insider in an email on Tuesday. "In this case, there's not an easy way around this high pressure."

So this weather system coming in from the west will essentially block Hurricane Florence from moving and dispersing, holding the massive, 73,000 square mile-wide storm in place over the Carolinas and Virginia.

The National Weather Service is warning that "thousands of homes and businesses will be filled with water" in the storm-affected area. Roads on wet ground will likely erode from underneath.

hurricane florence potential destruction infographic

It's similar to what happened last year when Hurricane Harvey hit Texas. Harvey was downgraded to a tropical depression when it made landfall — with winds of less than 39 mph — but it lingered for days, hanging over low-lying Houston and causing devastating flooding.

Hurricanes are becoming wetter

The second reason that Florence could bring deadly rainfall and flooding is part of a larger trend in hurricane developmentstorms are becoming wetter and more powerful as the oceans and air warm up.

Peak rain rates, which arrive when the fierce core of a storm is overhead, have increased 30% over the past 60 years, according Andreas Prein, a project scientist with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research.

This is due to greenhouse gases from fossil fuels, which trap more heat on the planet and make the air and oceans warmer as a result. Warmer air can hold more water vapor, and this allows storms to become stronger and produce more rain.

Hurricanes are also fed by warm ocean water, which pumps more heat and evaporating seawater up into a storm. The surface water in the ocean needs to be at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit in order for a hurricane to get swirling. (That's why they don't appear during the winter.) Currently, sea surface temperatures off the Carolinas are 3 or 4 degrees Fahrenheit higher than average for this time of year, giving Florence more fuel than previous storms that hit the region.

Because Florence is trapped by that high-pressure ridge and likely to stick around over warmer water for longer, that could give the storm even more strength.

More powerful hurricanes also bring higher storm-surge levels, a problem that's exacerbated by sea-level rise. Hurricane Florence's storm surge could be as high as 13 feet in places like Cape Fear and Cape Lookout on the coast of North Carolina.

Hurricanes typically lose strength as they move over land, but the warmer air and water means there's more energy available to fuel their destructive paths. When storms like Florence have more moisture to draw from, they maintain more strength as they move inland and hold in moisture for longer.

"Storms are going to move deeper inland and affect more people," climate scientist Cindy Bruyere, who studies storms at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, recently told Business Insider. The trend means places where people aren't used to being in the flood path could be inundated.

Eastern North Carolina has a moderate to high risk of flash floods as the storm arrives, but flash flooding is possible up into Maryland and the southeast corner of West Virginia, per National Weather Service.

florence flash flood risk

Storms are getting sluggish

Stalled storms like Harvey — and potentially Florence — might represent a new normal, according to recent research from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The analysis, done by by NOAA researcher James Kossin, shows that hurricanes, typhoons, and tropical storms are moving more slowly over the Earth's surface, especially over land. Storms slowed by an average of 10% from 1949 to 2016, that analysis found.

This cyclone slowdown is likely caused by changes in the circulation of Earth's atmosphere due to climate change, Kossin said. Over the 67-year period he studied, the average global temperature rose by 0.5 degrees Celsius.

Stronger, wetter, slower storms are becoming a life-threatening consequence of living in a warmer world.

So messt ihr den ROI im Social-Media-Marketing      Cache   Translate Page

Viele Unternehmen investieren nicht wenig Geld in Social-Media-Marketing. Doch was kommt eigentlich am Ende wieder zurück? Diese Infografik zeigt euch, wie ihr den ROI eurer Social-Media-Maßnahmen berechnet. Ein Beitrag im Rahmen unserer Themenwoche Dmexco.

Entscheidend ist, was hinten rauskommt.

Infografik: Social-Media-ROI messen – Eine Anleitung in 4 Schritten

Mit einem Klick auf das Vorschaubild gelangt ihr zur vollständigen Infografik.

Social-Media-ROI messen
Diese Infografik zeigt euch, wie ihr den ROI eurer Social-Media-Maßnahmen berechnet. (Infografik: MDG Advertising)

Schritt 1: Definiert messbare Ziele

Schritt 2: Konkrete Werte zuweisen

Schritt 3: Kalkuliert eure Ausgaben

Global warming will likely alter the internal workings of our bodies – and cause a noticeable shift in our appearance      Cache   Translate Page

Graphic for the report, 'Groundswell - Preparing for Internal Climate Migration', showing the effects of internal migration caused by global warming. Graphic: World Bank

By Scott Solomon
7 September 2018

(NBC News) – As climate change brings rising temperatures, droughts, shifting patterns of precipitation, and longer growing seasons, plants and animals are evolving to keep pace.

Biologists have observed squirrels and salmon developing at an accelerated pace, causing them to reproduce at a younger age. Earlier summers have caused some flowers to bloom earlier in the year. And corals are forging new relationships with microscopic algae to survive in warmer, more acidic seas.

As the planet continues to warm, evolutionary changes are expected in other species as well — including Homo sapiens. Climate change will alter the internal workings of our bodies in subtle but significant ways and will likely cause a noticeable shift in our appearance.

warmer climate means malaria, West Nile virus and other diseases long confined primarily to the tropics will spread into temperate zones. As a result, people living in the U.S. and other developed nations will be exposed to these illnesses, and our immune systems will be forced to evolve new defenses. That, in turn, could cause other, noninfectious diseases.

Two blood disorders — sickle cell and thalassemia — arose and continue to exist because they have a beneficial side effect: resistance to malaria. Such disorders, or new ones, may soon appear if malaria moves into populated areas of North America, East Asia, and Europe.

Similarly, our digestive systems will evolve in response to shifts in food availability — where crops and livestock can be cultivated. The ability to digest milk in adulthood evolved among groups in the Middle East and North Africa that began raising cattle. Future generations may evolve better abilities to tolerate sugar or fat.

Changing diets will also trigger changes in our microbiomes — the bacteria and other microorganisms that live in our guts and help to keep us healthy. Vegetarians tend to harbor a different mix of bacteria than meat eaters, and these changes could be exaggerated if prolonged droughts make it too costly to raise livestock for meat.

While these changes will be of enormous interest to biologists, they will be largely invisible. But as we change on the inside, we’ll also be changing on the outside. Evidence suggests that a warming planet could melt away differences between human races — or population groups, as scientists more accurately call them.

The reason why climate change could reduce racial differences is that it will trigger massive migrations. In recent decades the world has become more urbanized, with people moving into large cities in coastal areas. But as polar ice melts and sea levels rise, large numbers of people will be forced to flee the coasts. And as droughts become more common and more severe, people living in more arid areas will have to move to places with more reliable sources of water.

These migrations will erode the geographic barriers that once separated human populations. In fact, this process is already underway. As of 2017, 258 million people were living in a country other than the one they were born in — an increase of 49 percent since 2000, according to a report from the United Nations. A World Bank report released in March predicts that climate change will cause 140 million people to migrate by 2050, with those now living in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America especially likely to migrate.

One consequence of large-scale migrations is what biologists call gene flow, a type of evolution caused by the blending of genes between populations. When people from different populations mate and reproduce, their genes intermingle in their children. That can lead to combinations of traits not seen in either parent or in the populations they come from — like the dark skin and blue eyes of Cape Verde islanders, the result of interbreeding between Portuguese and West Africans. Climate change could affect human evolution. Here's how.

Upcoming Adobe Creative Cloud Updates for Premiere Pro, After Effects and More      Cache   Translate Page

Adobe presented innovations to their applications portfolio, which they will showcase during this year’s IBC conference. The innovations include Adobe Creative Cloud Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition and Character animator. We monitored Adobe’s virtual conference on 28th August to bring you more information about the updates.

The IBC 2018 conference in Amsterdam starts tomorrow and Adobe has already announced the news and innovations connected to their products. The updates to the Adobe Creative Cloud include for instance Adobe Sensei-powered animation, intelligent audio cleanup tools, selective color grading, advanced data-driven motion graphics templates and end-to-end VR 180 support. The aim ot the new features is to make many common repetitive editing tasks faster and easier so that filmmakers spend more time on the creative part of the editing process.

Project Rush
These updates follow Adobe’s recent unveil of Project Rush, which is the first all-in-one cross-device video editing app designed specifically for online content creators (cinema5D news post here). Project Rush delivers a streamlined and intuitive user experience that makes creating and sharing online content easier by harnessing the power of Premiere Pro and After Effects. Project Rush projects are seamlessly opened in Premiere Pro. The project is currently in beta and should be available later this year.
Adobe Project Rush
Premiere Pro and After Effects Updates

Motion graphics workflows – Motion Graphics templates provide a comprehensive toolset in combining graphics with efficient customization in editorial. The templates encapsulate complex After Effects projects into single files with simplified controls for use in Premiere Pro. Workflow with the use of Dynamic Link eliminate any need for intermediate rendering between applications which speeds up production and keeps the project editable at any stage of the pipeline.

New authoring tools in After Effects streamline production in Premiere Pro with parameter grouping to organize the template and order the workflow for editors.
It is now also possible to drag and drop spreadsheet files to motion graphics templates to generate visual representations of information within video projects using data-driven infographics in Premiere Pro.

Intelligent audio cleanup – It is now possible to remove background noise or reverb with new Reduce Noise and Reduce Reverb sliders in the Essential Sound panel in Premiere Pro.

Updated color grading tools – New Selective Color Grading tools in Premiere Pro and After Effects makes the curve adjustments easier and more precise. Expanding on the Hue Saturation “donut” Selective Color Grading offers more tools with higher precision by pairing values, such as Hue vs Hue and Luma vs Saturation, on two axes that show exactly how much any parameter can be adjusted.

End-to-end VR 180 – New support features were added for 180-degree video in Premiere Pro and After Effects, including optimized ingest, effects and output in Google VR 180 for viewing on YouTube or other platforms.
Faster animation and compositing with more control – Advanced Puppet pins for Mesh Sculpting improve the animations. Advanced pins allow users to define the position, scale, and rotation of the pin giving significant control over how the Puppet effect mesh deforms around that pin. Using Bend pins helps to create organic movements within a design, such as a breathing chest or a wagging tail.

Improved power and performance – both Premiere Pro and After Effects bring new performance improvements, support for new hardware and codecs.
Audition Updates
Intelligent audio cleanup – Instantly improves audio with intelligent cleanup tools – DeNoise and DeReverb. Dial down or remove background noise and reverb from a sound clip that’s been intelligently adjusted by adaptive algorithms.
Powerful recording and mixing – With rich and responsive multitrack environment users can playback 128 tracks, record 32 tracks – all at low latencies with no drop-outs and no
proprietary hardware required. High contrast colors and reduced clip chrome improve visibility and organization. Scale waveforms and make gain adjustments directly inside clips for visual feedback and efficient workflows.

Character Animator Updates
Characterizer – First unveiled as Project Puppetron at an Adobe MAX sneak peek, Characterizer is now a production-ready component of Character Animator CC. By recording a series of words and facial expressions the Characterizer generates a new, unique character. Users can then use slider controls to adjust the level of stylization and fine-tune regions and facial expressions to get the desired result. The puppet can be created in few seconds using a webcam or other connected camera.

New animator features – For instance the Replays feature can repeat the action to fine-tune other parameters like facial expression etc. Magnets allow puppets to throw, drop, and pick up items. Squashiness Parameter in Physics allows characters and objects in scenes to behave more like traditional cartoon animations.

Adobe Stock and Other Updates
The Adobe Stock has an updated search filters – users can look for footage based on frame rate and/or duration. Stock includes millions of curated, contemporary 4K and HD cinematic footage and professionally-designed Motion Graphics templates and is accessible right from the Essential Graphics panel in Premiere Pro and After Effects.
Team projects for collaboration – Integrate the team and workflow with Team Projects in Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Adobe Media Encoder. Team Projects makes it easy to compare versions and combine edits inside a team. Improved invitations workflow include inviting collaborators to a team project using groups synced from the organization’s directory.
Attendees at this year’s IBC conference can get a closer look at the newly revealed features and hear from industry experts at the Adobe booth (#7.B35, Hall 7, RAI Amsterdam) and at over 100 partner booths from September 13 – 18. There is alo a possibility to tune-in to a Facebook Live with Jason Levine on September 13 at 9 am PT to hear about the upcoming release.
The new features for Adobe Creative Cloud announced at IBC will be available with the next version of Creative Cloud coming later this year.

Hurricane Florence could cause up to 13 feet of storm surge in parts of the East Coast — here's what that could look like      Cache   Translate Page

Hurricane Florence

  • Hurricane Florence has started to hit the North Carolina coast.
  • The National Hurricane Center predicts the hurricane will cause up to 13 feet of storm surge on the East Coast.
  • A new tool created by the NHC helps visualize how devastating the storm surge could be.

Hurricane Florence, traveling toward the US with sustained winds of up to 105 mph, has started to hit the North Carolina coast.

The hurricane is predicted to bring up to 40 inches of rain and 13 feet of storm surge. While that sounds like a lot, it can be hard to picture exactly what it could look like on the ground. The National Hurricane Center, which called these levels "catastrophic," has created a augmented reality tool that helps visualize how severe the storm surge could be.

Vehicles begin floating once the water reaches two or three feet, making driving away impossible. At nine feet of storm surge flooding — expected in parts of North Carolina such as Newport — the only way to survive is to move up to a higher level until the flooding passes. Take a look at the Weather Channel's evocative visualization of the NHC tool:

The NHC said tropical storm-force winds will hit North and South Carolina with full force on Thursday evening. Evacuation orders are in place in Virginia and the Carolinas, and about 10 million people are under some kind of weather warning.

Five states and Washington, DC, have declared states of emergency: South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and Maryland. As of Thursday, nearly a dozen airports have shut down, with more than 1,000 flights being canceled.

Hurricane Florence could flood thousands of buildings. The New York Times reported that Duke Energy, the Carolinas' major power supplier, said as many as 3 million people could lose power.

Hurricane Florence could dump up to 40 inches of rain on parts of the Carolinas — here's why the deluge may be so intense      Cache   Translate Page

hurricane florence

  • Hurricane Florence, an 80-mile wide Category 2 storm, is starting to hit the coast of the Carolinas
  • Forecasters predict the storm will slow down considerably, coming close to a standstill and dumping as much as 40 inches of rain along the coast.
  • That could prompt deadly floods.
  • Climate scientists say Florence's behavior isn't an anomaly — hurricanes are getting wetter and slower. Here's why.

Hurricane Florence's rain and wind are hitting the US East Coast, bringing 105 mph winds, a life-threatening storm surge, and extremely heavy rain.

The storm's center is expected to make landfall near the border between North and South Carolina. Hurricane-force winds extend 80 miles out, and its storm surge could be devastating, as a wall of water up to 13 feet high pushes its way into the shore.

But the worst impact of the storm may actually come from the rain.

The National Hurricane Center predicts that the storm will sit over the Carolinas all weekend, stalling over portions of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia, until Sunday morning. Projections suggest that Florence will barely budge on Friday and Saturday, and its eye will take more than two full days to drift from the coast into central South Carolina.

During that time, up to 40 inches of rain could fall over parts of North Carolina's coast, prompting immense floods. Even areas as far inland as Charlotte and Raleigh could get between 6 and 10 inches of rain.

Several factors are combining to create this worrisome situation: a high-pressure ridge of calmer weather is developing west of the Ohio Valley, and ocean and air temperatures are higher than average.

So this weather system coming in from the west will essentially block Hurricane Florence from moving and dispersing, holding the storm in place.

Peak rain rates, which arrive when the fierce core of a storm is overhead, have increased 30% over the past 60 years, according to Andreas Prein, a project scientist with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research.

5 major us hurricanes compared

When storms like Florence have more moisture to draw from, they maintain more strength as they move inland, bringing devastating flooding and strong winds along with them.

"Storms are going to move deeper inland and affect more people," climate scientist Cindy Bruyere, who studies storms at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, recently told Business Insider. The trend means places where people aren't used to being in the flood path could be inundated.

Eastern North Carolina has a moderate to high risk of flash floods as the storm arrives, but flash flooding is possible up into Maryland and the southern tip of Pennsylvania, per National Weather Service.

florence flash flood map thurs 11a

The 9 best Netflix original series to binge-watch      Cache   Translate Page

eleven and eggo waffles stranger things netflix millie bobby brown

In 2017, Netflix looked back on "A Year in Bingeing" with an infographic that showcased the Netflix original series subscribers devoured throughout the year.

According to the release, Netflix members watched more than 140 million hours of shows, movies, and documentaries per day in 2017. The most popular shows that people devoured (watched for more than two hours a day) in 2017 included "Riverdale," "The OA," "American Vandal," and "The Keepers," among others.

But 2018 has brought new series and new seasons of fan favorites, which means plenty of new opportunities to bang out 10 episodes in a weekend.

From true crime to feel-good makeovers, to sci-fi hits like "Stranger Things," here are 9 Netflix original series worth binge-watching.

"Aggretsuko"

Don't let her appearance as a cute red panda and Sanrio anime character fool you. By day, Retsuko is a 25-year-old who works in the accounting department of a trading firm in Tokyo and is often frustrated with the demands of her job. By night, she screams her heart out to death metal karaoke.

This animated original series is one of Netflix's hidden gems. It has already been renewed for a second season in 2019, so don't feel guilty about binge-watching every 15-minute episode.

"Black Mirror"

Created by screenwriter and producer Charlie Brooker and picked up by Netflix for seasons three and four after originally airing its first two seasons on UK's Channel 4, "Black Mirror" is an anthology series that explores the complicated effects of technology on modern society.

It's number six on Netflix's list of the shows that had people cheating in 2017 — cheating that is, in watching it ahead of their significant others.

Netflix, which has renewed "Black Mirror" for a fifth season, will announce a premiere date and episode count in late 2018. The original series also received three Emmy Nominations in 2018 with "Black Mirror: USS Callister" nominated for best television movie, Jesse Plemons for the episode "USS Callister" as lead actor in a limited series or movie, and actress Letitia Wright for the episode "Black Museum" as supporting actress in a limited series or movie.

"Girlboss"

"Girlboss" received its share of criticism and was canceled after one season.

The half-hour series, which is billed as a "loose" retelling of Sophia Amoruso's rise to fashion-flipping fame as the founder of clothing line Nasty Gal, but it does get some of the details right before she launched her eBay store.

Britt Robertson (portraying Amoruso) also brings grit and determination to her performance, making the character an edgy one to watch. If you've got an entrepreneurial spirit and want a series with low commitment (read: one season only), ignore the critics and start watching this one.

4 Ways K–12 Can Maximize the Impact of Immersive Technology in the Classroom      Cache   Translate Page
4 Ways K–12 Can Maximize the Impact of Immersive Technology in the Classroom eli.zimmerman_9856 Thu, 09/13/2018 - 08:51

Immersive technologies such as virtual reality and 3D scanning are becoming so hot that educators across the country are beginning to roll them out for students of all ages.

The problem is that, while technologies blending elements of the physical and digital worlds in simulated environments offer enormous academic value, too many institutions fall prey to what I call the “buy it and forget it” approach.” This is a syndrome where principals, superintendents and others with purchasing power in educational institutions become so enamored with the novelty of new technology they decide they just need to have it — even if they do not completely understand why.

WATCH: See how students are using VR tools to create their own virtual content!

1. Prioritize Great Digital Content to Strengthen Impact

Publishers will eventually improve their offerings, but schools do not have to wait. The beauty of immersive technology is that it enables teachers and students to collaboratively create their own digital learning scenarios.

For instance, suppose a biology teacher has a physical model of a human heart that he or she can separate into pieces. With existing technology, this teacher can scan each of those pieces into a computer and share the digital objects with students who can then handle and even 3D-print them.

Suddenly, you are not only teaching students about organs; you are creating a lasting, digital learning exercise that can be shared in future projects. Students will have constant access to freshly created, fully interactive and remarkably compelling school projects that can be shared, discussed and worked on with hundreds of other students through global digital communities.

2. Accentuate STEAM Learning Through VR/AR Integration

As I’ve previously noted, technology is the great enabler for STEAM learning (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). It inspires the imagination, enabling students to conceptualize difficult subjects in new ways. For instance, HP’s all-in-one immersive learning station called “Sprout Pro” is helping to transform students from passive observers to engaged learners with immersive technology that augments hands-on experiences across disciplines.

It includes both a 2D and 3D scanner, as well as a projector, cameras and a touch mat with stylus for scanning and customizing objects. Indeed, institutions are using Sprout with the specific goal of trying to get students – especially girls – more interested in STEAM-related careers.

3. Use Immersive Tech to Tell Stories More Simply

Imagine, for example, a history teacher trying to describe what life was like in ancient Rome.

4. Do Not Forget to Invest in Professional Development

One of the most important things I can tell you about deploying immersive technology in schools is that you shouldn’t do it alone.

A terrifying visualization shows how Hurricane Florence could cause up to 13 feet of storm surge in parts of the East Coast      Cache   Translate Page

Take a look at the Weather Channel's evocative visualization of the NHC tool:

Vehicles begin floating once the water reaches two or three feet, making driving away impossible. At nine feet of storm surge flooding — expected in parts of North Carolina such as Newport — the only way to survive is to move up to a higher level until the flooding passes.
