Maybe Susan Collins was right after all. The senator from Maine castigated progressive opponents for attempting to “bribe” her into voting against Brett Kavanaugh by promising not to spend the $1.3 million they’ve raised against her if she voted nay. The “bribe” accusation sounded a little hyperbolic, but the Washington Post’s Eli Rosenberg writes that it might be more spot-on than one would think:

The unusual fundraising effort by Maine People’s Alliance, Mainers for Accountable Leadership and activist Ady Barkan on the platform Crowdpac had raised more than $1 million by Tuesday — a not insignificant amount for a political race in the small state. But amidst the attention it was receiving were signs that its efforts could be backfiring.

At least one ethics expert consulted by The Washington Post said that it may very well violate federal bribery statutes, which prohibit giving or offering anything of value to government officials in exchange for any acts or votes. …

Adav Noti, a senior director at the nonpartisan Campaign Legal Center, which works on rules of ethics and finance in government, told The Post that he thought the listing was illegal, noting that bribery is a federal crime.

“I think they’re playing a game to avoid the literal application of the bribery statute,” he said. “They have structured the campaign in a way that the action they will do if she does what she wants is that they will refund the money but that seems to be a fictional distinction. It still seems like they’re saying if you don’t do what we want we will spend $1 million and that strikes me as just as much as an inducement as saying we’ll give you $1 million if you do what we want.”

If it’s a bribe, it’s more of a reverse or negative bribe. The group isn’t actually giving her something of value in exchange for the no vote on Kavanaugh; they’re promising not to spend the money they’ve collected against her. On net that’s a valuable transaction, but it’s still the absence of action that they’re trading.

Does that count for bribery? It’s tough to say, and other experts contacted by Rosenberg don’t agree with Noti, although one did note that the effort against Collins looked “icky”:

“It seems kind of icky but it doesn’t rise to the level of bribery because there’s no agreement,” Jordan Libowitz, a spokesman for the Citizens for Ethics and Responsibilities. “It’s just the way money and politics tend to work these days.”

True, and Senate seats are valuable commodities … as Rod Blagojevich once observed before talking himself into a federal indictment. Raising money to campaign against Kavanaugh is certainly legal, as it is to campaign against Collins. Making an endorsement contingent on a vote is not just kosher, it’s a wide practice among all sorts of interest groups, as is threatening opposition over it. Making it explicitly about cash while the money is in hand, however, might cross a line. Maybe.

Would anyone prosecute it? Naah. But the IRS might take an interest in the 501(c)(4) status of the groups involved while they’re electioneering against Collins. Otherwise, the legal issues are academic, but the political damage from this ill-advised bullying campaign is likely to help Kavanaugh a lot more than these groups could have ever hurt him. Great job!

The Second National Data Science Bowl, a data science competition where the goal was to automatically determine cardiac volumes from MRI scans, has just ended. We participated with a team of 4 members from Ghent University and finished 2nd!

The team kunsthart (artificial heart in English) consisted of Ira Korshunova, Jeroen Burms, Jonas Degrave, 3 PhD students, and professor Joni Dambre. It’s also a follow-up of last year’s team ≋ Deep Sea ≋, which finished in first place for the First National Data Science Bowl.

Overview

This blog post is going to be long, here is a clickable overview of different sections.

Introduction

The problem

The goal of this year’s Data Science Bowl was to estimate minimum (end-systolic) and maximum (end-diastolic) volumes of the left ventricle from a set of MRI-images taken over one heartbeat. These volumes are used by practitioners to compute an ejection fraction: fraction of outbound blood pumped from the heart with each heartbeat. This measurement can predict a wide range of cardiac problems. For a skilled cardiologist analysis of MRI scans can take up to 20 minutes, therefore, making this process automatic is obviously useful.

Unlike the previous Data Science Bowl, which had very clean and voluminous data set, this year’s competition required a lot more focus on dealing with inconsistencies in the way the very limited number of data points were gathered. As a result, most of our efforts went to trying out different ways to preprocess and combine the different data sources.

The data

The dataset consisted of over a thousand patients. For each patient, we were given a number of 30-frame MRI videos in the DICOM format, showing the heart during a single cardiac cycle (i.e. a single heartbeat). These videos were taken in different planes including the multiple short-axis views (SAX), a 2-chamber view (2Ch), and a 4-chamber view (4Ch). The SAX views, whose planes are perpendicular to the long axis of the left ventricle, form a series of slices that (ideally) cover the entire heart. The number of SAX slices ranged from 1 to 23. Typically, the region of interest (ROI) is only a small part of the entire image. Below you can find a few of SAX slices and Ch2, Ch4 views from one of the patients. Red circles on the SAX images indicate the ROI’s center (later we will explain how to find it), for Ch2 and Ch4 they specify the location of SAX slices projected on the corresponding view.

2Ch 4Ch

The DICOM files also contained a bunch of metadata. Some of the metadata fields, like PixelSpacing and ImageOrientationm were absolutely invaluable to us. The metadata also specified patient’s age and sex.

For each patient in the train set, two labels were provided: the systolic volume and the diastolic volume. From what we gathered (link), these were obtained by cardiologists by manually performing a segmentation on the SAX slices, and feeding these segmentations to a program that computes the minimal and maximal heart chamber volumes. The cardiologists didn’t use the 2Ch or 4Ch images to estimate the volumes, but for us they proved to be very useful.

Combining these multiple data sources can be difficult, however for us dealing with inconsistencies in the data was more challenging. Some examples: the 4Ch slice not being provided for some patients, one patient with less than 30 frames per MRI video, couple of patients with only a handful of SAX slices, patients with SAX slices taken in weird locations and orientations.

The evaluation

Given a patient’s data, we were asked to output a cumulative distribution function over the volume, ranging from 0 to 599 mL, for both systole and diastole. The models were scored by a Continuous Ranked Probability Score (CRPS) error metric, which computes the average squared distance between the predicted CDF and a Heaviside step function representing the real volume.

An additional interesting novelty of this competition was the two stage process. In the first stage, we were given a training set of 500 patients with a public test set of 200 patients. In the final week we were required to submit our model and afterwards the organizers released the test data of 440 patients and labels for 200 patients from the public test set. We think the goal was to compensate for the small dataset and prevent people from optimizing against the test set through visual inspection of every part of their algorithm. Hand-labeling in the first stage was allowed on the training dataset only, for the second stage it was also allowed for 200 validation patients.

The solution: traditional image processing, convnets, and dealing with outliers

In our solution, we combined traditional image processing approaches, which find the region of interest (ROI) in each slice, with convolutional neural networks, which perform the mapping from the extracted image patches to the predicted volumes. Given the very limited number of training samples, we tried combat overfitting by restricting our models to combine the different data sources in predefined ways, as opposed to having them learn how to do the aggregation. Unlike many other contestants, we performed no hand-labelling .

Pre-processing and data augmentation

The provided images have varying sizes and resolutions, and do not only show the heart, but the entire torso of the patient. Our preprocessing pipeline made the images ready to be fed to a convolutional network by going through the following steps:

  • applying a zoom factor such that all images have the same resolution in millimeters
  • finding the region of interest and extracting a patch centered around it
  • data augmentation
  • contrast normalization

To find the correct zooming factor, we made use of the PixelSpacing metadata field, which specifies the image resolution. Further we will explain our approach to ROI detection and data augmentation.

Detecting the Region Of Interest through image segmentation techniques

We used classical computer vision techniques to find the left ventricle in the SAX slices. For each patient, the center and width of the ROI were determined by combining the information of all the SAX slices provided. The figure below shows an example of the result.

ROI extraction steps
ROI extraction steps

First, as was suggested in the Fourier based tutorial, we exploit the fact that each slice sequence captures one heartbeat and use Fourier analyses to extract an image that captures the maximal activity at the corresponding heartbeat frequency (same figure, second image).

From these Fourier images, we then extracted the center of the left ventricle by combining the Hough circle transform with a custom kernel-based majority voting approach across all SAX slices. First, for each fourier image (resulting from a single sax slice), the highest scoring Hough circles for a range of radii were found, and from all of those, the highest scoring ones were retained. , and the range of radii are metaparameters that severely affect the robustness of the ROI detected and were optimised manually. The third image in the figure shows an example of the best circles for one slice.

Finally, a ‘likelihood surface’ (rightmost image in figure above) was obtained by combining the centers and scores of the selected circles for all slices. Each circle center was used as the center for a Gaussian kernel, which was scaled with the circle score, and all these kernels were added. The maximum across this surface was selected as the center of the ROI. The width and height of the bounding box of all circles with centers within a maximal distance (another hyperparameter) of the ROI center were used as bounds for the ROI or to create an ellipsoidal mask as shown in the figure.

Given these ROIs in the SAX slices, we were able to find the ROIs in the 2Ch and 4Ch slices by projecting the SAX ROI centers onto the 2Ch and 4Ch planes.

Data augmentation

As always when using convnets on a problem with few training examples, we used tons of data augmentation. Some special precautions were needed, since we had to preserve the surface area. In terms of affine transformations, this means that only skewing, rotation and translation was allowed. We also added zooming, but we had to correct our volume labels when doing so! This helped to make the distirbution of labels more diverse.

Another augmentation here came in the form of shifting the images over the time axis. While systole was often found in the beginning of a sequence, this was not always the case. Augmenting this, by rolling the image tensor over the time axis, made the resulting model more robust against this noise in the dataset, while providing even more augmentation of our data.

Data augmentation was applied during the training phase to increase the number of training examples. We also applied the augmentations during the testing phase, and averaged predictions across the augmented versions of the same data sample.

Network architectures

We used convolutional neural networks to learn a mapping from the extracted image patches to systolic and diastolic volumes. During the competition, we played around a lot with both minor and major architectural changes. Our base architecture for most of our models was based on VGG-16.

As we already mentioned, we trained different models which can deal with different kinds of patients. There are roughly four different kinds of models we trained: single slice models, patient models, 2Ch models and 4Ch models.

Single slice models

Single slice models are models that take a single SAX slice as an input, and try to predict the systolic and diastolic volumes directly from it. The 30 frames were fed to the network as 30 different input channels. The systolic and diastolic networks shared the convolutional layers, but the dense layers were separated. The output of the network could be either a 600-way softmax (followed by a cumulative sum), or the mean and standard deviation of a Gaussian (followed by a layer computing the cdf of the Gaussian).

Although these models obviously have too little information to make a decent volume estimation, they benefitted hugely from test-time augmentation (TTA). During TTA, the model gets slices with different augmentations, and the outputs are averaged across augmenations and slices for each patient. Although this way of aggregating over SAX slices is suboptimal, it proved to be very robust to the relative positioning of the SAX slices, and is as such applicable to all patients.

Our single best single slice model achieved a local validation score of 0.0157 (after TTA), which was a reliable estimate for the public leaderboard score for these models. The approximate architecture of the slice models is shown on the following figure.

2Ch and 4Ch models

These models have a much more global view on the left ventricle of the heart than single SAX slice models. The 2Ch models also have the advantage of being applicable to every patient. Not every patient had a 4Ch slice. We used the same VGG-inspired architecture for these models. Individually, they achieved a similar validation score (0.0156) as was achieved by averaging over multiple sax slices. By ensembling only single slice, 2Ch and 4Ch models, we were able to achieve a score of 0.0131 on the public leaderboard.

Patient models

As opposed to single slice models, patient models try to make predictions based on the entire stack of (up to 25) SAX slices. In our first approaches to these models, we tried to process each slice separately using a VGG-like single slice network, followed by feeding the results to an overarching RNN in an ordered fashion. However, these models tended to overfit badly. Our solution to this problem consists of a clever way to merge predictions from multiple slices. Instead of having the network learn how to compute the volume based on the results of the individual slices, we designed a layer which combines the areas of consecutive cross-sections of the heart using a truncated cone approximation.

Basically, the slice models have to estimate the area (and standard deviation thereof) of the cross-section of the heart in a given slice . For each pair of consecutive slices and , we estimate the volume of the heart between them as , where is the distance between the slices. The total volume is then given by .

Ordering the SAX slices and finding the distance between them was achieved through looking at the SliceLocation metadata fields, but this field was not very reliable in finding the distance between slices, neither was the SliceThickness. We looked for the two slices that were furthest apart, drew a line between them, and projected every other slice onto this line. This way, we estimated the distance between two slices ourselves.

Our best single model achieved a local validation score of 0.0105 using this approach. This was no longer a good leaderboard estimation, since our local validation set contained relatively few outliers compared to the public leaderboard in the first round. The model had the following architecture:

* The first dimension is the batch size, i.e. the number of patients, the second dimension is the number of slices. If a patient had fewer slices, we padded the input and omitted the extra slices in the volume estimation.

Oftentimes, we did not train patient models from scratch. We found that initializing patient models with single slice models helps against overfitting, and severely reduces training time of the patient model.

The architecture we described above was one of the best for us. To diversify our models, some of the good things we tried include:

  • processing each frame separately, and taking the minimum and maximum at some point in the network to compute systole and diastole
  • sharing some of the dense layers between the systole and diastole networks as well
  • using discs to approximate the volume, instead of truncated cones
  • cyclic rolling layers
  • leaky RELUs
  • maxout units

One downside of the patient model approach was that these models assume that SAX slices nicely range from one end of the heart to the other. This was trivially not true for patients with very few (< 5) slices, but it was harder to detect automatically for some other outlier cases as in figure below, where something is wrong with the images or the ROI algorithm fails.

Training and ensembling

Error function. At the start of the competition, we experimented with various error functions, but we found optimising CRPS directly to work best.

Training algorithm. To train the parameters of our models, we used the Adam update rule (Kingma and Ba).

Initialization. We initialised all filters and dense layers orthogonally (Saxe et al.). Biases were initialized to small positive values to have more gradients at the lower layer in the beginning of the optimization. At the Gaussian output layers, we initialized the biases for mu and sigma such that initial predictions of the untrained network would fall in a sensible range.

Regularization. Since we had a low number of patients, we needed considerable regularization to prevent our models from overfitting. Our main approach was to augment the data and to add a considerable amount of dropout.

Validation

Since the trainset was already quite small, we kept the validation set small as well (83 patients). Despite this, our validation score remained pretty close to the leaderboard score. Also, in cases where it didn’t, it helped us identify issues in our models, namely problematic cases in the test set which were not represented in our validation set. We noticed for instance that quite some of our patient models had problems with patients with too few SAX slices (< 5).

Selectively train and predict

By looking more closely at the validation scores, we observed that most of the accumulated error was obtained by wrongly predicting only a couple of such outlier cases. At some point, being able to handle only a handful of these meant the difference between a leaderboard score of 0.0148 and 0.0132!

To mitigate such issues, we set up our framework such that each individual model could choose not to train on or predict a certain patient. For instance, models on patients’ SAX slices could choose not to predict patients with too few SAX slices, models which use the 4Ch slice would not predict for patients who don’t have this slice. We extended this idea further by developing expert models, which only trained and predicted for patients with either a small or a big heart (as determined by the ROI detection step). Further down the pipeline, our ensembling scripts would then take these non-predictions into account.

Ensembling and dealing with outliers

We ended up creating about 250 models throughout the competition. However, we knew that some of these models were not very robust to certain outliers or patients whose ROI we could not accurately detect. We came up with two different ensembling strategies that would deal with these kind of issues.

Our first ensembling technique followed the following steps:

  1. For each patient, we select the best way to average over the test time augmentations. Slice models often preferred a geometric averaging of distributions, whereas in general arithmetic averaging worked better for patient models.
  2. We average over the models by calculating each prediction’s KL-divergence from the average distribution, and the cross entropy of each single sample of the distribution. This means that models which are further away from the average distribution get more weight (since they are more certain). It also means samples of the distribution closer to the median-value of 0.5 get more weight. Each model also receives a model-specific weight, which is determined by optimizing these weights over the validation set.
  3. Since not all models predict all patients, it is possible for a model in the ensemble to not predict a certain patient. In this case, a new ensemble without these models is optimized, especially for this single patient. The method to do this is described in step 2.
  4. This ensemble is then used on every patient on the test-set. However, when a certain model’s average prediction disagrees too much with the average prediction of all models, the model is thrown out of the ensemble, and a new ensemble is optimized for this patient, as described in step 2. This meant that about ~75% of all patients received a new, ‘personalized’ ensemble.

Our second way of ensembling involves comparing an ensemble that is suboptimal, but robust to outliers, to an ensemble that is not robust to them. This approach is especially interesting, since it does not need a validation set to predict the test patients. It follows the following steps:

  1. Again, for each patient, we select the best way to average over the test time augmentations again.
  2. We combine the models by using a weighted average on the predictions, with the weights summing to one. These weights are determined by optimising them on the validation set. In case not all models provide a prediction for a certain patient, it is dropped for that patient and the weights of the other models are rescaled such that they again sum to one. This ensemble is not robust to outliers, since it contains patient models.
  3. We combine all 2Ch, 4Ch and slice models in a similar fashion. This ensemble is robust to outliers, but only contains less accurate models.
  4. We detect outliers by finding the patients where the two ensembles disagree the most. We measure disagreement using CRPS. If the CRPS exceeds a certain threshold for a patient, we assume it to be an outlier. We chose this threshold to be 0.02.
  5. We retrain the weights for the first ensemble, but omit the outliers from the validation set. We choose this ensemble to generate predictions for most of the patients, but choose the robust ensemble for the outliers.

Following this approach, we detected three outliers in the test set during phase one of the competition. Closer inspection revealed that for all of them either our ROI detection failed, or the SAX slices were not nicely distributed across the heart. Both ways of ensembling achieved similar scores on the public leaderboard. (0.0110)

Second round submissions

For the second round of the competition, we were allowed to retrain our models on the new labels (+ 200 patients). We were also allowed to plan two submissions. Of course, it was impossible to retrain all of our models during this single week. For this reason, we chose to only train our 44 best models, according to our ensembling scripts.

For our first submission, we splitted of a new validation set. The resulting models were combined using our first ensembling strategy.

For our second submission, we trained our models on the entire training set (i.e. there was no validation split). We assembled them using the second ensembling method. Since we had no validation set to optimise the weights of the ensemble, we computed the weights by training an ensemble on the models we trained with a validation split, and transferred them over.

Software and hardware

We used Lasagne, Python, Numpy and Theano to implement our solution, in combination with the cuDNN library. We also used PyCUDA for a few custom kernels. We made use of scikit-image for pre-processing and augmentation.

We trained our models on the NVIDIA GPUs that we have in the lab, which include GTX TITAN X, GTX 980, GTX 680 and Tesla K40 cards. We would like to thank Frederick Godin and Elias Vansteenkiste for lending us a few extra GPUs in the last week of the competition.

Conclusion

In this competition, we tried out different ways to preprocess data and combine information from different data sources, and thus, we learned a lot in this aspect. However, we feel that there is still a room for improvement. For example, we observed that most of our error still hails from a select group of patients. These include the ones for which our ROI extraction fails. In hindsight, hand-labeling the training data and training a network to do the ROI extraction would be a better approach, but we wanted to sidestep doing a lot of this kind of manual effort as much as possible. In the end, labeling the data would probably have been less time intensive.

Predicting epileptic seizures      Cache   Translate Page

The American Epilepsy Society Seizure Prediction Challenge ended a few days ago, and I finished 10th out of 504 teams. In this post I will briefly outline the problem and my solution.

The problem

Epilepsy is one of the most commonly diagnosed neurological disorders. It is characterized by the occurrence of spontaneous seizures, and to make matters even worse nearly 30% of patients cannot control their seizures with medication. In such cases, seizure forecasting systems are vitally important. Their purpose is to trigger a warning when a probability of the forthcoming seizure exceeds a predefined threshold, so patients have time to plan their activities.

As a primary challenge towards building a seizure prediction device is the ability to classify between pre-seizure and non-seizure states of the brain activity measured with the EEG. Further, we will use a term preictal to denote a pre-seizure state and interictal for a normal EEG data without any signs of seizure activity.

Preictal state in our setting was defined to be one hour before the seizure onset with a 5-minute horizon.

An example of a preictal EEG record (3 channels out of 16, picture from Kaggle)
An example of a preictal EEG record (3 channels out of 16, picture from Kaggle)

For each 10-minute clip from preictal or interictal one-hour sequence, we were asked to assign a probability that a given clip is preictal. In the training data the timing of each clip was known. However it wasn’t given for the test data clips, so we couldn’t use the timing information when building a classifier.

The evaluation metric was the area under the ROC curve (AUC) calculated for seven available subjects as one big group. It implied an additional challenge since predictions from subject-specific models in general were not well calibrated. Training a single classifier for all subject a priori could not work better because brain activity is a highly individual. The global AUC metric required additional robustness against the choice of the classification threshold, which is crucial in seizure forecasting systems.

The solution: convnets

The idea of using convnets for EEG was inspired by the research of Sander Dieleman. In his case, the audio signal was one-dimensional, unlike the EEG signal, which had 15-24 channels depending on the subject. Therefore, the information from different channels has to be combined in some way. I tried various convnets architectures, however, most success I could get when merging features from different channels in the very first layer.

The input features itself were very simple and similar to those in Howbert et al., 2014: EEG signal was partitioned into nonoverlapping 1 min frames and transformed with DFT. The resulted amplitude spectrum was averaged within 6 frequency bands: delta (0.1-4 Hz), theta (4-8 Hz), alpha (8-12 Hz), beta (12-30 Hz), lowgamma (30-70 Hz) and highgamma (70-180 Hz). Thus, the dimension of the data clip was equal to (channels frequency bands time frames). Additionally in some models I used standard deviation of the signal computed in the same time windows as DFT.

An example of a convnet architecture
An example of a convnet architecture

Its first layer (C1) performs convolution in a time dimension over all N channels and all 6 frequency bands, so the shape of its filters is . C1 has 16 feature maps each of shape . The second layer (C2) performs convolution with 32 filters of size . C2 is followed by a global temporal pooling layer GP3, which computes the following statistics: mean, maximum, minimum, variance, geometrical mean, norm over 9 values in each feature map from C2. GP3 is fully connected with 128 units in F4 layer. C1 and C2 layers were composed of ReLUs; tanh activation was used in the hidden layer.

I used Python, Theano, NumPy and SciPy to implement the solution. Since I didn’t have a GPU, I trained everything on CPU, which usually took 2-6 hours to train all individual models for 175K gradient updates with ADADELTA.

Model averaging

As a final model I used a geometric mean of the predictions (normalized to 0-1 range for each subject) obtained from 11 convnets with different hyperparameters: number of feature maps or hidden units in each layer, strides in convolutional layers, amount of dropout and weight decay, etc. Models were also trained on different data, for example, I could take DFT in 0.5 or 2 minute windows or change the frequency bands partition by dividing large gamma bands into two. To augment the training set I took the overlaps between consecutive clips in the same one-hour sequence, regretfully I didn’t do it real-time.

Results

In the middle of the competition organizers decided to allow use of the test data to calibrate the predictions. I used the simplest form of calibration: unity-based normalization of per-subject predictions. This could improve the AUC on about 0.01. So the final ensemble, where each of 11 models was calibrated, obtained 0.81087 on public and 0.78354 on private datasets. Models averaging was essential to reduce the probability of an unpleasant surprise on the private LB. After the private scores had become available, I found out that some models with relatively high public scores had unexpectedly low private scores and vice versa. A possible explanation I will give in the next section.

Pitfalls of the EEG

In this competition one could easily overfit to the public test set, which explains a large shake up between public and private leaderboard standings. Moreover, a tricky cross-validation could track the test score with varying success, and simple validation wasn’t even supposed to work. So what is the reason for this phenomena?

The problem lies in the properties of the EEG data: clips, which are close in time are more similar to one another than to the distant clips because brain activity constantly changes. This can be showed via t-SNE. If we take all preprocessed data clips (train and test) from one subject, transform them with PCA into vectors with 50 components and take a few sequences it would look like the plot below. Here we can see three clusters of six 10-minute clips (with some outliers), which correspond to different preictal EEG hours.

t-SNE visualization of the preictal clips from 3 one-hour sequences.
t-SNE visualization of the preictal clips from 3 one-hour sequences.

Obviously, if the classifier is trained on 5 clips from a green sequence, it is easier to make a correct predictions for the 6th green clip rather than for yellow or red clip from another sequence. Sadly, but in many papers I’ve seen on seizure prediction, this fact is oftenly neglected. Many authors report cross-validation or validation results, which are unlikely to be as optimistic at test time, when the device is actually implanted in one’s brain.

Conclusions

This competition outlined a lot of open questions in the field of seizure prediction. These problems are solvable, so epilepsy patients hopefully could get reliable seizure advisory systems in the nearest future.

The competition was a basis for my thesis, which can be found in my GitHub repository along with its code.

Abstract
Treatment with intracerebroventricular (ICV)-delivered cerliponase alfa enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) in a Phase 1/2 study of 24 subjects with CLN2 disease resulted in a meaningful preservation of motor and language (ML) function and was well tolerated. Treatment was associated with anti-drug antibody (ADA) production in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 6/24 (25%) and in the serum of 19/24 (79%) of clinical trial subjects, respectively, over a mean exposure of 96.4 weeks (range 0.1-129 weeks). Neutralizing antibodies (NAb) were not detected in the CSF of any of the subjects. No events of anaphylaxis were reported. Neither the presence of serum ADA nor drug-specific immunoglobulin E was associated with the incidence or severity of hypersensitivity adverse events. Serum and CSF ADA titers did not correlate with change in ML score. Therefore, the development of an ADA response to cerliponase alfa is not predictive of an adverse safety profile or poor treatment outcome.

Thanks, Obama! Barack Obama reminds us why Donald Trump is president By David Harsanyi SEPTEMBER 10, 2018 “How hard can that be? Saying that Nazis are bad,” former President Barack Obama asked a crowd in Illinois over the weekend. Well, probably no harder than saying the words “radical Islam,” I imagine. Or maybe it’s slightly less difficult than not sending billions of dollars to Holocaust-denying terror regimes that have both the means and intent to murder Jews—in 2018, not 1942. And it’s definitely a lot easier than not meeting, posing, then smiling for a picture with Louis Farrakhan. But thanks for the lecture. Obama may well find the presence of a few hundred pathetic white supremacists more perilous than a deadly worldwide ideological movement with millions of adherents. But just as Obama’s sins do not excuse President Trump’s inexplicable answer to the Charlottesville riot, Trump’s words don’t excuse the most divisive modern president, a man whose unilateralism and contempt for the process and the Constitution helped create the environment America now find itself in. While Obama’s self-reverential speech was crammed with revisionism, the most jaw-dropping contention from the former president was probably a defense of his record on free speech: “I complained plenty about Fox News,” the scandal-ridden Obama explained, “but you never heard me threaten to shut them down, or call them ‘enemies of the people.’” That’s the thing. We often hear Trump’s hyperbolic, and sometimes destructive, attacks on the press. Thankfully, as of yet the president hasn’t applied the power of the state to inhibit anyone’s free expression. And this is no thanks to liberals’ eight-year efforts to empower the executive branch when that was useful to them. It’s worth remembering that it was Obama who called out the Supreme Court during a State of the Union speech for defending the First Amendment in the Citizens United case, and his allies who still argue that state should be able to ban political documentaries — and, yes, books. Let’s also not forget Obama’s Internal Revenue Service admitted then apologized for cracking down on conservative political groups. It was the Obama administration that blamed the Benghazi attack on free speech, apologizing to tyrannies for the excesses of free expression, and then, for good measure, threw the amateurish videomaker behind “The Innocence of Muslims” into jail. Most of all, let’s not forget that Obama did a lot more than complain about Fox News. The administration was so preoccupied with the cable news network (the only major station that could reasonably be seen as the opposition) that top-ranking administration officials like Anita Dunn, Rahm Emanuel, and David Axelrod all engaged in a concerted effort to openly delegitimize its coverage. That was unprecedented, but okay. Less okay, though, was that not long after that effort, Attorney General Eric Holder decided to spy on a Fox journalist—shopping his case to three separate judges, until he found one who let him name reporter James Rosen as a co-conspirator in a crime of reporting the news. 8/13 https://thefederalist.com/2018/09/10/barack-obama-reminds-us-why-donald-trump-is-president/ Once again, if ANYONE wants to thank someone for giving us President Trump... There is the one to thank.... Barack Odumbo...

          Paper Tales      Cache   Translate Page

The moduli space of matroids. (arXiv:1809.03542v1 [math.AG])      Cache   Translate Page

Authors: Matthew Baker, Oliver Lorscheid

In the first part of the paper, we clarify the connections between several algebraic objects appearing in matroid theory: both partial fields and hyperfields are fuzzy rings, fuzzy rings are tracts, and these relations are compatible with the respective matroid theories. Moreover, fuzzy rings are ordered blueprints and lie in the intersection of tracts with ordered blueprints; we call the objects of this intersection pastures.

In the second part, we construct moduli spaces for matroids over pastures. We show that, for any non-empty finite set $E$, the functor taking a pasture $F$ to the set of isomorphism classes of rank-$r$ $F$-matroids on $E$ is representable by an ordered blue scheme $Mat(r,E)$, the moduli space of rank-$r$ matroids on $E$.

In the third part, we draw conclusions on matroid theory. A classical rank-$r$ matroid $M$ on $E$ corresponds to a $\mathbb{K}$-valued point of $Mat(r,E)$ where $\mathbb{K}$ is the Krasner hyperfield. Such a point defines a residue pasture $k_M$, which we call the universal pasture of $M$. We show that for every pasture $F$, morphisms $k_M\to F$ are canonically in bijection with $F$-matroid structures on $M$.

An analogous weak universal pasture $k_M^w$ classifies weak $F$-matroid structures on $M$. The unit group of $k_M^w$ can be canonically identified with the Tutte group of $M$. We call the sub-pasture $k_M^f$ of $k_M^w$ generated by ``cross-ratios' the foundation of $M$,. It parametrizes rescaling classes of weak $F$-matroid structures on $M$, and its unit group is coincides with the inner Tutte group of $M$. We show that a matroid $M$ is regular if and only if its foundation is the regular partial field, and a non-regular matroid $M$ is binary if and only if its foundation is the field with two elements. This yields a new proof of the fact that a matroid is regular if and only if it is both binary and orientable.

Wandering Singularities. (arXiv:1809.03585v1 [math.DG])      Cache   Translate Page

Authors: Tobias Holck Colding, William P. Minicozzi II

Parabolic geometric flows are smoothing for short time however, over long time, singularities are typically unavoidable, can be very nasty and may be impossible to classify. The idea of [CM6] and here is that, by bringing in the dynamical properties of the flow, we obtain also smoothing for large time for generic initial conditions. When combined with [CM1], this shows, in an important special case, the singularities are the simplest possible.

The question of the dynamics of a singularity has two parts. One is: What are the dynamics near a singularity? The second is: What is the long time behavior? That is, if the flow leaves a neighborhood of a singularity, can it return at a much later time? The first question was addressed in [CM6] and the second here.

Combined with [CM1], [CM6], we show that all other closed singularities than the (round) sphere have a neighborhood where `nearly every' closed hypersurface leaves under the flow and never returns, even to a dilated, rotated or translated copy of the singularity. In other words, it wanders off. In contrast, by Huisken, any closed hypersurface near a sphere remains close to a dilated or translated copy of the sphere at each time.

Hamiltonian Berge cycles in random hypergraphs. (arXiv:1809.03596v1 [math.CO])      Cache   Translate Page

Authors: Deepak Bal, Pat Devlin

In this note, we study the emergence of Hamiltonian Berge cycles in random $r$-uniform hypergraphs. In particular, we show that for $r \geq 3$, the $2$-out random $r$-graph almost surely has such a cycle, and we use this to determine (up to a multiplicative factor) the threshold probability for when the Erd\H{o}s--R\'enyi random $r$-graph is likely to have such a cycle. In particular, in the Erd\H{o}s--R\'enyi model we show (up to a constant factor depending on $r$) the emergence of these cycles essentially coincides with the disappearance of vertices of degree at most $1$.

On cylindricity of submanifolds of nonnegative Ricci curvature in a Minkowski space. (arXiv:1809.03639v1 [math.DG])      Cache   Translate Page

Authors: A.Borisenko, Y.Nikolayevsky

We consider Finsler submanifolds $M^n$ of nonnegative Ricci curvature in a Minkowski space $\mathbb{M}^{n+p}$ which contain a line or whose relative nullity index is positive. For hypersurfaces, submanifolds of codimension two or of dimension two, we prove that the submanifold is a cylinder, under a certain condition on the inertia of the pencil of the second fundamental forms. We give an example of a surface of positive flag curvature in a three-dimensional Minkowski space which is not locally convex.

Asymptotic joint spectra of Cartesian powers of strongly regular graphs and bivariate Charlier-Hermite polynomials. (arXiv:1809.03761v1 [math.CO])      Cache   Translate Page

Authors: John Vincent S. Morales, Nobuaki Obata, Hajime Tanaka

Generalizing previous work of Hora (1998) on the asymptotic spectral analysis for the Hamming graph $H(n,q)$ which is the $n^{\mathrm{th}}$ Cartesian power $K_q^{\square n}$ of the complete graph $K_q$ on $q$ vertices, we describe the possible limits of the joint spectral distribution of the pair $(G^{\square n},\overline{G}\vphantom{G}^{\square n})$ of the $n^{\mathrm{th}}$ Cartesian powers of a strongly regular graph $G$ and its complement $\overline{G}$, where we let $n\rightarrow\infty$, and $G$ may vary with $n$. This result is an analogue of the bivariate central limit theorem, and we obtain in this way the bivariate Poisson distributions and the standard bivariate Gaussian distribution, together with the product measures of univariate Poisson and Gaussian distributions. We also report a family of bivariate hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials with respect to the last distributions, which we call the bivariate Charlier-Hermite polynomials, and prove basic formulas for them. This family of orthogonal polynomials seems previously unnoticed, possibly because of its peculiarity.

On the motion of a fluid-filled rigid body with Navier Boundary conditions. (arXiv:1809.03852v1 [math.AP])      Cache   Translate Page

Authors: Giusy Mazzone, Jan Pruess, Gieri Simonett

We consider the inertial motion of a system constituted by a rigid body with an interior cavity entirely filled with a viscous incompressible fluid. Navier boundary conditions are imposed on the cavity surface. We prove the existence of weak solutions and determine the critical spaces for the governing evolution equation. Using parabolic regularization in time-weighted spaces, we establish regularity of solutions and their long-time behavior. We show that every weak solution \`a la Leray-Hopf to the equations of motion converges to an equilibrium at an exponential rate in the $L_q$-topology for every fluid-solid configuration. A nonlinear stability analysis shows that equilibria associated with the largest moment of inertia are asymptotically (exponentially) stable, whereas all other equilibria are normally hyperbolic and unstable in an appropriate topology.

The determined property of Baire in reverse math. (arXiv:1809.03940v1 [math.LO])      Cache   Translate Page

Authors: Eric Astor, Damir Dzhafarov, Antonio Montalbán, Reed Solomon, Linda Brown Westrick

We define the notion of a determined Borel code in reverse math, and consider the principle $DPB$, which states that every determined Borel set has the property of Baire. We show that this principle is strictly weaker than $ATR$. Any $\omega$-model of $DPB$ must be closed under hyperarithmetic reduction, but $DPB$ is not a theory of hyperarithmetic analysis. We show that whenever $M\subseteq 2^\omega$ is the second-order part of an $\omega$-model of $DPB$, then for every $Z \in M$, there is a $G \in M$ such that $G$ is $\Delta^1_1$-generic relative to $Z$.

Partial and full hyper-viscosity for Navier-Stokes and primitive equations. (arXiv:1809.03954v1 [math.AP])      Cache   Translate Page

Authors: Amru Hussein

The $3$-D primitive equations and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with full hyper-viscosity and only horizontal hyper-viscosity are considered on the torus, i.e., the diffusion term $-\Delta$ is replaced by $-\Delta+ \varepsilon(-\Delta)^{l}$ or by $-\Delta + \varepsilon(-\Delta_H)^{l}$, respectively, where $\Delta_H = \partial_x^2+\partial_y^2 $, $\Delta= \Delta_H + \partial_z^2$, $\varepsilon> 0$, $l>1$. Hyper-viscosity is applied in many numerical schemes, and in particular horizontal hyper-viscosity appears in meteorological models. A classical result by Lions states that for the Navier-Stokes equations uniqueness of global weak solutions for initial data in $L^2$ holds if $-\Delta$ is replaced by $(-\Delta)^{5/4}$. Here, for the primitive equations the corresponding result is proven for $(-\Delta)^{8/5}$. For the case of horizontal hyper-viscosity $l=2$ is sufficient in both cases. Strong convergence for $\varepsilon\to 0$ of hyper-viscous solutions to a weak solution of the Navier-Stokes and primitive equations, respectively, is proven as well. The approach presented here is based on the construction of strong solutions via an evolution equation approach for initial data in $L^2$ and weak-strong uniqueness.

Taut Foliations, Positive 3-Braids, and the L-Space Conjecture. (arXiv:1809.03959v1 [math.GT])      Cache   Translate Page

We construct taut foliations in every closed 3-manifold obtained by $r$-framed Dehn surgery along a positive 3-braid knot $K$ in $S^3$, where $r < 2g(K)-1$ and $g(K)$ denotes the Seifert genus of $K$. This confirms a prediction of the L-space Conjecture. For instance, we produce taut foliations in every non-L-space obtained by surgery along the pretzel knot $P(-2,3,7)$, and indeed along every pretzel knot $P(-2,3,q)$, for $q$ a positive odd integer. This is the first construction of taut foliations for every non-L-space obtained by surgery along an infinite family of hyperbolic L-space knots. Additionally, we construct taut foliations in every closed 3-manifold obtained by $r$-framed Dehn surgery along a positive 1-bridge braid in $S^3$, where $r <g(K)$.

A few pages in Siegel describe how, starting with a fundamental polygon for a compact Riemann surface, one can construct a symplectic basis of its homology. This note retells that construction, specializing to the case where the surface is associated to a congruence subgroup $\Gamma$ of $SL_2(Z)$. One then obtains by classical procedures a generating system for $\Gamma$ with a minimal number of hyperbolic elements and a presentation of the $Z[\Gamma]$-module $Z[P^1(Q)]_0$.

Given a constant mean curvature surface that bounds a compact manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature, we obtain intrinsic conditions on the surface that guarantee the positivity of its Hawking mass. We also obtain estimates of the Bartnik mass of such surfaces, without assumptions on the integral of the squared mean curvature. If the ambient manifold has negative scalar curvature, our method also applies and yields estimates on the hyperbolic Bartnik mass of these surfaces.

IB Publisher's note: Yes Paul Craig Roberts is a nutcake. He is a Ronald Reagan Republican economist who sees clearly, but through a deeply colored filter. None the less, he does have an inkling of the dichotomy between the "Left" and the "Right". The "Left" with elements of the "Deep State" (intelligence complex, CIA, NSA, State Department, etc) and the "Right" with elements of the "Military-Industrial Complex" (Pentagon, Defense contractors, Mercenary operations, ICE, etc.). Both aspects of our government are hurtling towards a more repressive and garrulous America. As these aggressive and regressive forces gain influence, woe is us. America will conduct more war and experience more repression.]

For some time I have pointed out the paradox of the American liberal/progressive/left being allied with the CIA, FBI, military/security complex and deep state. Now leftist Ann Garrison has noticed the paradox of this alliance. She concludes that the Left has lost its mind. https://www.globalresearch.ca/we-love-the-cia-or-how-the-left-lost-its-mind/5653450

Indeed, it has.

Out of its hatred of Trump the Left has united with the forces of evil and war that are leading to conflict with Russia. The Left’s hatred of Trump shows that the American Left has totally seperated from the interests of the working class, which elected Trump.

The American Left has abandoned the working class for the group victimizations and hatreds of Identity Politics. As Hillary put it, the working class comprises the “Trump deplorables.” The Democratic Party, like the Republicans, represents the ruling oligarchy.

I have explained that the leftwing lost its bearings when the Soviet Union collapsed and socialism gave way to neoliberal privatizations.

The moral fury of the leftwing movement had to go somewhere, and it found its home in Identity Politics in which the white heterosexual male takes the place of the capitalist, and his victim groups—blacks, women, homosexuals, illegal immigrants—take the place of the working class.

The consequences of the leftwing’s alliance with warmongers and liars is the leftwing’s loss of veracity. The Left has endorsed a CIA orchestration—“Russiagate”—for which there is no known evidence, but which the Left supports as proven truth.

The purpose of “Russiagate” is to prevent President Trump from normalizing relations with Russia. In these times when so many Americans are hard pressed, normal relations could adversely impact the budget and power of the military/security complex by reducing the “Russian threat.”

If there is no real Russian threat, only an orchestrated perceived one, the question arises: why does the military/security complex have a taxpayer-supported annual budget of $1,000 billion dollars?

The presstitutes have kept the truth from emerging that the “Russiagate” investigation has found no sign of a Trump/Putin plot to steal the 2016 presidential election from Hillary.

Indeed, it has been proven beyond all questioning that the Hillary emails were not hacked but were downloaded on a thumb drive. This proof collapses the entire premise of “Russiagate.”
Nevertheless, the hoax continues.

Muller’s indictments are for unrelated matters, such as income tax evasion in the distant past of Republican fund raisers and consultants. These charges have nothing whatsoever to do with Mueller’s mandate.

Indeed, as Andrew C. McCarthy, a former US attorney who led the 1995 terrorism prosecution against Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman for the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, has made clear, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s appointment of Mueller to head the “Russiagate” investigation is not in compliance with the regulations that govern the appointment of a special prosecutor.

The appointment of a special prosecutor requires evidence of a specific federal crime that is to be investigated. You only have a special prosecutor when there is factual basis for believing that a federal crime has been committed.

What is the federal crime? What is the factual basis? Mueller’s appointment does not say. Therefore, Mueller’s appointment is invalid. Rosenstein has violated the process.

In my opinion, this is grounds for Rosenstein to be removed from office. https://www.nationalreview.com/2018/09/trump-russia-probe-robert-mueller-investigation/

At one time, Congress—both parties—would have been all over the invalid Mueller appointment.

However, after 16 years of Cheney/Bush and Obama regime lawlessness, even Republicans accept that the Constitution’s restraints on executive branch power, along with the laws and regulations Congress has established specifying the exercise of these powers, have been rendered meaningless by the “war on terror,” a hoax designed to further Israel’s interests in the Middle East and the neoonservative doctrine of US hegemony, while making billions of dollars for the military/security complex.

Charlie Savage’s book, Takeover, and David Ray Griffin’s book, Bush and Cheney: How They Ruined America and the World, accurately document how 9/11 was used to destroy the Constitution’s balance of power within the government and to create unaccountable executive branch powers that over-ride the Constitution’s protection of civil liberty.

This demand for an unaccountable executive branch, pushed by VP—actually President in fact—Dick Cheney and his minions, such as Addington and John Yoo, was the agenda of the Republican Federalist Society.

An early book laying out the legally invalid and legally incompetent argument that the president had powers unchecked by Congress or the judiciary was Terry Eastland’s book, Energy in the Executive.

This collection of nonsense became Cheney’s bible as he proceeded in secret to remove constraints on executive branch power. The elevation of the executive branch above the law of the land is documented in Charlie Savage’s book. Read it and weep for your country destroyed by Dick Cheney.

On top of Cheney’s coup against accountable government, we have in America today another coup, organized by former CIA director John Brennan, former FBI director Comey, deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein, the Democratic National Committee, the departed Republican senator John McCain, a coup fully supported by the entirety of the US presstitute media.

This coup is against the democratically elected President of the United States for the sole reason that he threatens the power and profit of the entrenched military/security complex, about which President Eisenhower warned us 57 years ago, by wanting to normalize relations with Russia, the world’s premier nuclear power.

The question is unavoidable: Why do the American people put up with this? Are they so insouciant that they have no realization that, if a president can be driven from office because he wants peace with Russia, the removed president’s successor will have to stand against Russia or also be driven from office. Trust and negotiation between the nuclear powers becomes impossible.

Why do Americans support conflict with a nuclear power that can completely destroy America?

During the entirety of the Cold War, in which I was a participant, the emphasis was on reducing tensions and creating trust. Today Washington’s interest is piling provocation after provocation on a country that can wipe us off the face of the earth.

The liberal/progressive/left, the Democratic National Committee, the CIA and the rest of the covert state, and the media whores all share this same commitment to the reckless and irresponsible provocation of a powerful nuclear power. As the US military itself acknowledges, Russia’s weapons are far beyond America’s defenses.

So what is going on? Is it the liberal/progressive/left’s desire that evil America be destroyed? Is this desired destruction of evil America the reason the Left has allied itself so tightly with the warmongers in Washington?

Is this the reason that the Left and the Democrats and a handful of Republicans want to impeach President Trump for attempting to make peace with Russia?

How can these crazed immoral people present themselves as some sort of moral arbiter when they are locked on a trajectory that will destroy Earth?

This destruction might be closer than anyone thinks. Here is the situation in Syria:

Russia and Syria, in cooperation with Iran and Turkey, have begun the assult on Iblid province, the last stronghold of Washington’s proxy army consisting of Al Qaeda, Al Nursra, and ISIS mercenaries hired by Washington.

According to reports, which might or might not be true considering the lack of veracity that is the defining characteristic of the Western media, the US and UK have troops among the mercenary forces, hoping apparently that this presence will deter the attack. As the attack has already begun, this is a false hope.

The Russians discovered Washington’s plot to explode a chemical weapon in Iblid province and exposed Washington’s plot to the UN. Washington had it set up that once its proxies created the appearance of a chemical weapon explosion, Washington would send Tomahawk missiles upon the Syrian forces, thus protecting its proxy army that it sent to overthrow Assad for Israel.

The Russian exposure of Washington’s conspiracy has denied Washington UN support. Moreover, Russia has sent a naval force armed with the new Russian hypersonic missiles to Syria and has announced that its aircraft in the area are also armed with these missiles.

As the US Navy and Air Force have no defense whatsoever against these missiles, if the US attacks the Syrian/Russian forces, it will be Putin’s decision whether any US ship or military aircraft in the area exists as anything but a smoldering ruin.

In other words, the entire power in the area lies in Russian hands. If Washington had any sense—and it doesn’t, Washington has hubris and arrogance in the place of sense—Washington would be nowhere close to Syria.

The question is this: Will the hotheads in Washington conclude that the Russian announcements and marshalling of forces is “just another Putin bluff.”

So far Putin has been loaded up with never-ending insults and provocation— blame for the crash of the Malaysian airliner, blame for poisoning a variety of people in England, blame for invading Ukraine, blame for interfering in US elections, blame for supporting the “dictator” Assad, a person democratically elected by a large vote who obviously has the support of the Syrian people as he liberates Syria from the forces Washington sent to put the country into the same chaos that exists in Iraq and Libya.

Have we reached the situation about which I have been worried, worries shared with my readers, in which Washington makes the miscalculation, based on the incorrect understanding of Russia’s resolve, to launch an attack on the Syrian/Russian forces that have begun the final liberation of Syria from Washington’s paid mercenaries?

Yesterday the Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity sent a letter to President Trump advising him of the war danger that the Trump administration has created by its continued illegal interference in Syria’s internal affairs. https://www.globalresearch.ca/moscow-has-upped-the-ante-in-syria/5653571

The Russian government cannot accept Washington’s military intervention in behalf of Al Qaeda, Al Nursa, and ISIS without completely losing all credibility, not only in the world, but inside Russia itself.

A realistic alternative to military action would be for Washington to stand aside as Syria reconstitutes itself and use a propaganda war to blame Syria and Russia for civilian deaths and for destroying “democratic rebels” who rose against a “dictator.”

The fear could be expanded to the Baltics and Ukraine by reviving the propaganda that Putin intends to reconstruct the Soviet Empire.

Washington has long used an expertly manufactured fear of Russia to control Europe. Fear can keep Europe in line, whereas military action against Russia could scare Europe into taking refuge in a revival of its sovereignty.

Yesterday the Wall Street Journal reported: “President Bashar al-Assad of Syria has approved the use of chlorine gas in an offensive against the country’s last major rebel stronghold, U.S. officials said, raising the prospects for another retaliatory U.S. military strike as thousands try to escape what could be a decisive battle in the seven-year-old war.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, the US strikes could target Russian and Iranian forces as well as Syrian forces.

It is difficult to believe that Washington thinks attacks on Russian forces would go unanswered. Such a reckless and irresponsible act could initiate Armageddon.

The claim that Assad has approved the use of chlorine gas in the liberation of Iblid is propagandistic nonsense put out by Washington as an excuse for Washington’s effort to protect its proxy army in Syria with military strikes.

All Syrian chemical weapons were removed by Russia and turned over to the US during the Obama regime. Moreover, Russia would not permit Assad to use chemical weapons if he had them.

Life on earth is faced with a situation in which Washington is so determined to overthrow Assad and to leave Syria in the same chaos as Libya and Iraq that Washington is willing to risk war with Russia.

Never before have irrationality and immorality had such a firm hold on a government. The world should be scared to death of the recklessness and irresponsibility of the US government.

Gauge from holography and holographic gravitational observables. (arXiv:1704.07959v3 [gr-qc] UPDATED)      Cache   Translate Page

Authors: José A. Zapata

In a spacetime divided into two regions $U_1$ and $U_2$ by a hypersurface $\Sigma$, a perturbation of the field in $U_1$ is coupled to perturbations in $U_2$ by means of the holographic imprint that it leaves on $\Sigma$. The linearized gluing field equation constrains perturbations on the two sides of a dividing hypersurface, and this linear operator may have a nontrivial null space. A nontrivial perturbation of the field leaving a holographic imprint on a dividing hypersurface which does not affect perturbations on the other side should be considered physically irrelevant. This consideration, together with a locality requirement, leads to the notion of gauge equivalence in Lagrangian field theory over confined spacetime domains.

Physical observables in a spacetime domain $U$ can be calculated integrating locally defined gauge invariant conserved currents on hypersurfaces such that $\partial \Sigma \subset \partial U$. This type of observables are capable of distinguishing gauge inequivalent solutions. The integral of a conserved current on a hypersurface is sensitive only to its homology class $[\Sigma]$, and if $U$ is homeomorphic to a four ball the homology class is determined by its boundary $S = \partial \Sigma$. We will see that a result of Anderson and Torre \cite{anderson1996classification} implies that for a large class of theories including General Relativity local observables turn out to be holographic in the sense that they can be written as integrals of over the two dimensional surface $S$. However, non holographic observables are needed to distinguish between gauge inequivalent solutions.

J. Nitsche proved that an isolated singularity of a conformal hyperbolic metric is either a conical singularity or a cusp one. We prove by developing map that there exists a complex coordinate $z$ centered at the singularity where the metric has the expression of either $\displaystyle{\frac{4\alpha^2\vert z \vert^{2\alpha-2}}{(1-\vert z \vert ^{2\alpha})^2}\vert \mathrm{d} z \vert^2}$ with $\alpha>0$ or $\displaystyle{\vert z \vert ^{-2}\big(\ln|z|\big)^{-2}|dz|^{2}}$.

Analysis and Structure Optimization of Radial Halbach Permanent Magnet Couplings for Deep Sea Robots      Cache   Translate Page
Permanent magnet couplings (PMCs) can convert the dynamic seal of transmission shaft into a static seal, which will significantly improve the transmission efficiency and reliability. Therefore, the radial Halbach PMC in this paper is suitable as the transmission mechanism of deep sea robots. A two-segment Halbach array is adopted in the radial PMC, and the segment arc coefficient can be adjustable. This paper presents the general analytical solutions of the distinctive Halbach PMCs based on scalar magnetic potential and Maxwell stress tensor. The analytical solutions of magnetic field are in good agreement with 2-D finite element analysis (FEA) results. In addition, an initial prototype of the radial Halbach PMC has been fabricated, and the analytical solutions of magnetic torque are compared with 3-D FEA and experiment results. This paper also establishes an optimization procedure for PMCs based on the combination of 3-D FEA, Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN), and Genetic Algorithm (GA). 3-D FEA is performed to calculate the pull-out torque of the samples from Latin hypercube sampling, then BPNN is used to describe the relationship between the optimization variables and pull-out torque. Finally, GA is applied to solve the optimization problem, and the optimized scheme is proved to be more reasonable with the FEA method.

The objective of the study is to determine the importance of the mode of onset as prognostic factor in systemic sclerosis (SSc). Data were collected from the Spanish Scleroderma Registry (RESCLE), a nationwide retrospective multicenter database created in 2006. As first symptom, we included Raynaud’s phenomenon (RP), cutaneous sclerosis, arthralgia/arthritis, puffy hands, interstitial lung disease (ILD), pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), and digestive hypomotility. A total of 1625 patients were recruited. One thousand three hundred forty-two patients (83%) presented with RP as first symptom and 283 patients (17%) did not. Survival from first symptom in those patients with RP mode of onset was higher at any time than those with onset as non-Raynaud’s phenomenon: 97 vs. 90% at 5 years, 93 vs. 82% at 10 years, 83 vs. 62% at 20 years, and 71 vs. 50% at 30 years (p < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, factors related to mortality were older age at onset, male gender, dcSSc subset, ILD, PAH, scleroderma renal crisis (SRC), heart involvement, and the mode of onset with non-Raynaud’s phenomenon, especially in the form of puffy hands or pulmonary involvement. The mode of onset should be considered an independent prognostic factor in systemic sclerosis and, in particular, patients who initially present with non-Raynaud’s phenomenon may be considered of poor prognosis.

Boolean Tensor Decomposition for Conjunctive Queries with Negation. (arXiv:1712.07445v2 [cs.DB] UPDATED)      Cache   Translate Page

Authors: Mahmoud Abo Khamis, Hung Q. Ngo, Dan Olteanu, Dan Suciu

We propose an algorithm for answering conjunctive queries with negation, where the negated relations have bounded degree. Its data complexity matches that of the best known algorithms for the positive subquery of the input query and is expressed in terms of the fractional hypertree width and the submodular width. The query complexity depends on the structure of the negated subquery; in general it is exponential in the number of join variables occurring in negated relations yet it becomes polynomial for several classes of queries.

This algorithm relies on several contributions. We show how to rewrite queries with negation on bounded-degree relations into equivalent conjunctive queries with not-all-equal (NAE) predicates, which are a multi-dimensional analog of disequality (not-equal). We then generalize the known color-coding technique to conjunctions of NAE predicates and explain it via a Boolean tensor decomposition of conjunctions of NAE predicates. This decomposition can be achieved via a probabilistic construction that can be derandomized efficiently.

Sturm attractors for quasilinear parabolic equations with singular coefficients. (arXiv:1806.04019v2 [math.DS] UPDATED)      Cache   Translate Page

Authors: Phillipo Lappicy

The goal of this paper is to construct explicitly the global attractors of parabolic equations with singular diffusion coefficients on the boundary, as it was done without the singular term for the semilinear case by Brunovsk'y and Fiedler (1986), generalized by Fiedler and Rocha (1996) and later for quasilinear equa- tions by the author (2017). In particular, we construct heteroclinic connections between hyperbolic equilibria, stating necessary and sufficient conditions for heteroclinics to occur. Such conditions can be computed through a permutation of the equilibria. Lastly, an example is computed yielding the well known Chafee-Infante attractor.

The Structure of BPS Equations for Ambi-polar Microstate Geometries. (arXiv:1807.06596v2 [hep-th] UPDATED)      Cache   Translate Page

Authors: Alexander Tyukov, Robert Walker, Nicholas P. Warner

Ambi-polar metrics, defined so as to allow the signature to change from +4 to -4 across hypersurfaces, are a mainstay in the construction of BPS microstate geometries. This paper elucidates the cohomology of these spaces so as to simplify greatly the construction of infinite families of fluctuating harmonic magnetic fluxes. It is argued that such fluxes should come from scalar, harmonic pre-potentials whose source loci are holomorphic divisors. This insight is obtained by exploring the Kahler structure of ambi-polar Gibbons-Hawking spaces and it is shown that differentiating the pre-potentials with respect to Kahler moduli yields solutions to the BPS equations for the electric potentials sourced by the magnetic fluxes. This suggests that harmonic analysis on ambi-polar spaces has a novel, and an extremely rich structure, that is deeply intertwined with the BPS equations. We illustrate our results using a family of two-centered solutions.

On Volterra quadratic stochastic operators of a two-sex population on $S^1\times S^1$. (arXiv:1808.01812v2 [math.DS] UPDATED)      Cache   Translate Page

We consider a four-parametric $(a, b, \alpha, \beta)$ family of Volterra quadratic stochastic operators for a bisexual population (i.e., each organism of the population must belong either to the female sex or the male sex). We show that independently on parameters each such operator has at least two fixed points. Moreover, under some conditions on parameters the operator has infinitely many (continuum) fixed points. Choosing parameters, numerically we show that a fixed point may be any type: attracting, repelling, saddle and non-hyperbolic. We separate five subfamilies of quadratic operators and show that each operator of these subfamilies is regular, i.e. any trajectory constructed by the operator converges to a fixed point.

PRAISE FOR "THE SAVIOUR OF SHARN"

I am not someone who is familiar with Eberron (Wayfinder's Guide is my first touchpoint) and this is a fantastic primer and an excellent solo adventure. As someone new to the setting, I deeply appreciated all of the Eberron-specific things popping up in context - really helped immerse me in this new world.

Alex Tey

This is a great introduction to the Eberron campaign setting. Lots of flavor of the world, as well as challenging encounters and an intriguing story.

Kristina Chun

Great way to learn a little about this incredible setting, while also having fun adventuring solo style. Anyone wanting to find out about Eberron needs to play this adventure!

Ben Wolfe

5e Solo Gamebooks has a line of gamebooks set in the Forgotten Realms, but with the appearance of the Eberron setting on Dungeon Master's Guild, the temptation to write an Eberron solo adventure could not be ignored. In all likelihood, this is just the first in a series of Eberron adventures.

Many thanks to a good friend and DM Ben Starrett aka Diamond J, whose Eberron campaign introduced me to the setting, and continues to increase my knowledge on the captivating realm of Eberron. Drazurak salutes you in the name of Vulkoor, almighty one!

Investigators at the University of Utah (U of U) Health have released some interesting, if not disturbing new findings: attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients have a greater risk of developing Parkinson's and Parkinson-like diseases than individuals with no ADHD history. The results from the new study were released in Neuropsychopharmacology through an article titled “ Increased risk of diseases of the basal ganglia and cerebellum in patients with a history of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder .” This new data is significant as 11% of children (4-17 years old) nationwide have been diagnosed with ADHD. Moreover, the long-term health effects of having ADHD and of common ADHD medications remains understudied. Parkinson's disease is commonly thought of as a neurodegenerative disease associated with aging, explains senior study investigator Glen Hanson, D.D.S., Ph.D., professor of pharmacology and toxicology in the School of Dentistry at U of U Health. Hallowe’en Spooktacular
Saturday, Sept. 22 - Sunday, Nov. 4
Bob Baker Marionette Theater
1345 W. 1st St. Los Angeles, CA 90026
$20

"This year’s Hallowe’en Spooktacular will be the last show run in the original Bob Baker Marionette Theater. Our Hallowe’en Spooktacular is a family friendly and terrifyingly fun hour-long revue show done in traditional Bob Baker “theater in the round” style. Over one hundred spirited puppets rally together to unearth everything on strings; from the xylo- bone playing ghouls, to the soulful laments of Dracula and Vampira and a bone rattling soiree of glow-in-the-dark skeletons, flitting the night away in their secret moonlit Cabaret. Bob Baker’s Hallowe’en Spooktacular is sure to whisk you away to “the place where imagination dwells” - and sometimes, lurks..."

"Panic And Dismay": Leaked Video Reveals Distraught Google Execs Grappling With Hillary Clinton's Loss      Cache   Translate Page

Days after Google was exposed trying to help Hillary Clinton win the 2016 election, a leaked "internal only" video published by Breitbart Senior Tech correspondent Allum Bokhari reveals a panel of Google executives who are absolutely beside themselves following Hillary Clinton's historic loss.

The video is a full recording of Google’s first all-hands meeting following the 2016 election (these weekly meetings are known inside the company as “TGIF” or “Thank God It’s Friday” meetings). Sent to Breitbart News by an anonymous source, it features co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, VPs Kent Walker and Eileen Naughton, CFO Ruth Porat, and CEO Sundar Pichai. -Breitbart

In the video, Brin can be heard comparing Trump supporters to fascists and extremists - arguing that like other extremists, Trump voters suffered from "boredom" which has, he claims, historically led to fascism and communism.

He then asks his company what they can do to ensure a "better quality of governance and decision-making."

And according to Kent Walker, VP for Global Affairs, those who support populist causes like the MAGA movement are motivated by "fear, xenophobia, hatred and a desire for answers that may or may not be there."

He later says that Google needs to fight to ensure that populist movements around the world are merely a "blip" and a "hiccup" in the arc of history that "bends towards progress."

The video can be seen below, however scroll down for a list of timestamped segments to note, courtesy of Breitbart

  • (00:00:00 – 00:01:12) Google co-founder Sergey Brin states that the weekly meeting is “probably not the most joyous we’ve had” and that “most people here are pretty upset and pretty sad.”
  • (00:00:24) Brin contrasts the disappointment of Trump’s election with his excitement at the legalization of cannabis in California, triggering laughs and applause from the audience of Google employees.
  • (00:01:12) Returning to seriousness, Brin says he is “deeply offen[ded]” by the election of Trump, and that the election “conflicts with many of [Google’s] values.”
  • (00:09:10) Trying to explain the motivations of Trump supporters, Senior VP for Global Affairs, Kent Walker concludes: “fear, not just in the United States, but around the world is fueling concerns, xenophobia, hatred, and a desire for answers that may or may not be there.”
  • (00:09:35) Walker goes on to describe the Trump phenomenon as a sign of “tribalism that’s self-destructive [in] the long-term.”
  • (00:09:55) Striking an optimistic tone, Walker assures Google employees that despite the election, “history is on our side” and that the “moral arc of history bends towards progress.”
  • (00:10:45) Walker approvingly quotes former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s comparison between “the world of the wall” with its “isolation and defensiveness” and the “world of the square, the piazza, the marketplace, where people come together into a community and enrich each other’s lives.”
  • (00:13:10) CFO Ruth Porat appears to break down in tears when discussing the election result.
  • (00:15:20) Porat promises that Google will “use the great strength and resources and reach we have to continue to advance really important values.”
  • (00:16:50) Stating “we all need a hug,” she then instructs the audience of Google employees to hug the person closest to them.
  • (00:20:24) Eileen Noughton, VP of People Operations, promises that Google’s policy team in DC is “all over” the immigration issue and that the company will “keep a close watch on it.”
  • (00:21:26) Noughton jokes about Google employees asking, ‘Can I move to Canada?’ after the election. She goes on to seriously discuss the options available to Google employees who wish to leave the country.
  • (00:23:12) Noughton does acknowledge “diversity of opinion and political persuasion” and notes that she has heard from conservative Google employees who say they “haven’t felt entirely comfortable revealing who [they] are.” and urged “tolerance.” (Several months later, the company would fire James Damore allegedly for disagreeing with progressive narratives.)
  • (00:27:00) Responding to a question about “filter bubbles,” Sundar Pichai promises to work towards “correcting” Google’s role in them
  • (00:27:30) Sergey Brin praises an audience member’s suggestion of increasing matched Google employee donations to progressive groups.
  • (00:34:40) Brin compares Trump voters to “extremists,” arguing for a correlation between the economic background of Trump supporters and the kinds of voters who back extremist movements. Brin says that “voting is not a rational act” and that not all of Trump’s support can be attributed to “income disparity.” He suggests that Trump voters might have been motivated by boredom rather than legitimate concerns.
  • (00:49:10) An employee asks if Google is willing to “invest in grassroots, hyper-local efforts to bring tools and services and understanding of Google products and knowledge” so that people can “make informed decisions that are best for themselves.” Pichai’s response: Google will ensure its “educational products” reach “segments of the population [they] are not [currently] fully reaching.”
  • (00:54:33) An employee asks what Google is going to do about “misinformation” and “fake news” shared by “low-information voters.” Pichai responds by stating that “investments in machine learning and AI” are a “big opportunity” to fix the problem.
  • (00:56:12) Responding to an audience member, Walker says Google must ensure the rise of populism doesn’t turn into “a world war or something catastrophic … and instead is a blip, a hiccup.”
  • (00:58:22) Brin compares Trump voters to supporters of fascism and communism, linking the former movement to “boredom,” which Brin previously linked to Trump voters. “It sort of sneaks up sometimes, really bad things” says Brin.
  • (01:01:15) A Google employee states: “speaking to white men, there’s an opportunity for you right now to understand your privilege” and urges employees to “go through the bias-busting training, read about privilege, read about the real history of oppression in our country.” He urges employees to “discuss the issues you are passionate about during Thanksgiving dinner and don’t back down and laugh it off when you hear the voice of oppression speak through metaphors.” Every executive on stage – the CEO, CFO, two VPs and the two Co-founders – applaud the employee.
  • (01:01:57) An audience member asks if the executives see “anything positive from this election result.” The audience of Google employees, and the executives on stage, burst into laughter. “Boy, that’s a really tough one right now” says Brin.

"This Will Be The Mother Of All Minsky Moments"      Cache   Translate Page

Submitted by John Mauldin, via Thoughts from the Frontline

We have all had the fun as kids of going to the beach and playing in the sand. Remember taking your plastic bucket and making sandpiles? Slowly pouring the sand into ever bigger piles, until one side of the pile starts to collapse?

In his very important book Ubiquity, Why Catastrophes Happen, Mark Buchamane wrote about an experiment with sand that three physicists named Per Bak, Chao Tang, and Kurt Wiesenfeld conducted in 1987.

In their lab at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, they started building sandpiles, piling up one grain of sand at a time. It’s a slow process, so they wrote a computer program to do it. Not as much fun but a whole lot faster.

During this experiment, they learned some interesting things that can help us understand how all sorts of calamities, including market crashes, unfold.

Critical State

What is the typical size of an avalanche? After a huge number of tests with millions of grains of sand, they found out there is no typical number:

Some involved a single grain; others, ten, a hundred, or a thousand. Still others were pile-wide cataclysms involving millions that brought nearly the whole mountain down. At any time, literally anything, it seemed, might be just about to occur.

The pile was completely chaotic in its unpredictability.

Now, let’s read this next paragraph. It is important, as it creates a mental image that helps us understand the organization of the financial markets and the world economy. (emphasis mine)

To find out why [such unpredictability] should show up in their sandpile game, Bak and colleagues next played a trick with their computer. Imagine peering down on the pile from above and coloring it in according to its steepness. Where it is relatively flat and stable, color it green; where steep and, in avalanche terms, “ready to go,” color it red. What do you see? They found that at the outset, the pile looked mostly green, but that, as the pile grew, the green became infiltrated with ever more red. With more grains, the scattering of red danger spots grew until a dense skeleton of instability ran through the pile. Here then was a clue to its peculiar behavior: a grain falling on a red spot can, by domino-like action, cause sliding at other nearby red spots. If the red network was sparse, and all trouble spots were well isolated one from the other, then a single grain could have only limited repercussions. But when the red spots come to riddle the pile, the consequences of the next grain become fiendishly unpredictable. It might trigger only a few tumblings, or it might instead set off a cataclysmic chain reaction involving millions. The sandpile seemed to have configured itself into a hypersensitive and peculiarly unstable condition in which the next falling grain could trigger a response of any size whatsoever.

Scientists refer to this as a critical state. The term critical state can mean the point at which water would go to ice or steam, or the moment that critical mass induces a nuclear reaction, etc.

But to physicists, [the critical state] has always been seen as a kind of theoretical freak and sideshow, a devilishly unstable and unusual condition that arises only under the most exceptional circumstances [in highly controlled experiments].... In the sandpile game, however, a critical state seemed to arise naturally through the mindless sprinkling of grains.

So, they asked themselves, could this phenomenon show up elsewhere? In the earth’s crust, triggering earthquakes… in wholesale changes in an ecosystem… or in a stock market crash?

Fingers of Instability

The scientists found that the size and timing of an avalanche depend on what they refer to as “fingers of instability”:

[A]fter the pile evolves into a critical state, many grains rest just on the verge of tumbling, and these grains link up into “fingers of instability” of all possible lengths. While many are short, others slice through the pile from one end to the other. So, the chain reaction triggered by a single grain might lead to an avalanche of any size whatsoever, depending on whether that grain fell on a short, intermediate, or long finger of instability.

Now we come to a critical point in our discussion. Read this next excerpt with the markets in mind (again, emphasis mine, and this is critical to our understanding of markets and change. Maybe you should read it two or three times.):

In this simplified setting of the sandpile, the power law also points to something else: the surprising conclusion that even the greatest of events have no special or exceptional causes. After all, every avalanche large or small starts out the same way, when a single grain falls and makes the pile just slightly too steep at one point. What makes one avalanche much larger than another has nothing to do with its original cause, and nothing to do with some special situation in the pile just before it starts. Rather, it has to do with the perpetually unstable organization of the critical state, which makes it always possible for the next grain to trigger an avalanche of any size.

Growing Sandpile

Now, let’s couple this idea with a few other concepts.

First, economist Dr. Hyman Minsky points out that stability leads to instability. The more comfortable we get with a given condition or trend, the longer it will persist. And then when the trend fails, the more dramatic the correction.

Long-term stability produces unstable financial arrangements. If we believe that tomorrow will be the same as last week, we are more willing to add debt or postpone savings in favor of current consumption.

Thus, says Minsky, the longer the period of stability, the higher the potential risk for even greater instability when market participants must change their behavior.

Relating this to our sandpile, the longer a critical state builds up in an economy, the greater the potential for a serious “avalanche.”

As I wrote in my “Train Wreck” series, (recap here). We are adding sand to not just one inevitably collapsing sandpile, but dozens and maybe hundreds of them. They will not keep growing forever.

I explained in Part 1 of that series, “Credit-Driven Train Wreck,” how a liquidity crisis will probably set off the chain of events that end in the Great Reset.

Which particular sandpile will fall first? It could be many, but I think high-yield corporate debt is the most likely. Millions of investors think they can collect those juicy yields and then be able to sell when trouble appears.

I think the mother of all Minsky moments is building. It will not be an instant sandpile collapse, but instead take years because we have $500 trillion of debt to work through.

Remember, that debt just can’t be pooped away. It is both money somebody owes and an asset on somebody else’s balance sheet. We can’t just take that away without huge consequences to culture and society.

But the fingers of instability, the total credit system, are seemingly growing with more red sand dots every month. All are inextricably linked. One day, another Thailand or Russia or something else (it makes no difference which) will start the cascade.

A Dietitian Reveals the 2 Things You Should Avoid Eating If You Want to Lose Belly Fat      Cache   Translate Page

Photographer: Them TooEditorial and internal use only. No advertising or print.

It seems like there's always a new fad diet or supplement that promises to blast away belly fat: Atkins, Whole30, green tea, keto, cinnamon, intermittent fasting, to name a few. And while many people have found varying success on many of these programs, the promises that they can immediately transform your body are overblown.

"There is still no miracle diet, food, nutrient, or bioactive component that will target abdominal fat," Kari D. Pilolla, PhD, RDN, of the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, wrote in an article for ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal. She continued that this belly fat increases risk for heart disease, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. But while targeting belly fat is important, there is no miracle cure or specific diet that can do the trick.

There are, however, some dietary patterns that have been found to help reduce belly fat. For example, a diet low in trans and saturated fat and higher in fiber has been found to help reduce belly fat. "These recommendations are consistent with heart-healthy diets like the NIH-developed Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and the Mediterranean-style diet," she wrote.

She also urged health and fitness professionals to stay up to date and critical of peer-reviewed and published research evidence. "A single study, even if well designed, does not support changing diet or exercise recommendations," she wrote.

Since belly fat is such a persistent issue for people, both for aesthetics and health purposes, there's no shortage of belly-fat-related content and recommendations on the internet. But it's important to be discerning with the information and stay up to date with the latest research. If you're looking to lose weight and target belly fat, it's best to talk with your doctor or a registered dietitian to find the best diet for you.

We may not realize it, but seemingly harmless daily tasks, like taking a walk or checking an email, can wreak serious havoc on your skin. According to the World Health Organization, 9 out of 10 people are exposed to air containing dangerous levels of pollutants, defined as physical, chemical, or biological matter found both inside and outdoors. Along with daily sun and blue light exposure from phones and laptops, these fine particulate substances (think smog and dirt) can cause serious cellular damage, which contributes to hyperpigmentation, inflammation, sensitivity, and visible signs of aging. Although assault from environmental stressors is inevitable, there are several ways you can protect your skin from the detrimental effects of everyday aggressors. These five products act as a barrier to shield your complexion from sunrays, air pollution, and blue light so your skin stays clear, bright, and healthy!

COOLA Eco-Lux Sport Sunscreen Spray SPF 50

This isn’t your typical chalky mineral sunscreen. Formulated with more than 70% organic ingredients, COOLA’s Eco-Lux Sunscreen Spray applies like a hydrating mist to protect your skin from damaging UVA and UVB rays. Infused with strawberry fruit extract, a powerful antioxidant rich in vitamin C, this fast-absorbing spray helps to combat free radical damage and lock in skin moisture. We love how the 360° nozzle allows us to coat even the most hard-to-reach areas (we’re talking about your upper back!) with an even, weightless mist.

BY TERRY Detoxilyn City Mask

More often that not, our skin isn’t getting the oxygen it needs to promote cell turnover because our pores are clogged with dirt, oil, and debris. The unfortunate result? Dull, sallow skin. This splurge-worthy anti-pollution mask contains foaming micro-bubbles that secure oxygen from the air and distribute it into your skin to purify and revitalize your complexion. A slight fizzing sensation lets you know the oxygenating action is working. When the crackling stops, rinse off with water and admire tight pores and glowing skin. But the magic doesn’t stop there—the mask’s moringa extract keeps working after you rinse to protect your complexion from everyday pollutants.

Dr. Barbara Sturm Anti-Pollution Drops

Think of these drops as an invisible shield that protects your skin from pollutants in the air, UV rays, and other environmental stressors. Formulated with antioxidant-rich cocoa seed extract and hyaluronic acid, these powerful drops also combat digital aging by deflecting harmful blue light rays emanating from computers and phones. Apply the drops straight to your skin or combine with your go-to moisturizer before makeup application for skin that’s protected all day and night!

The Beauty Chef ANTIOXIDANT Inner Beauty Boost

This antioxidant-infused potion combats free radicals from the inside out to provide anti-pollution protection, fight premature aging, and boost skin radiance. Rich in bio-fermented papaya, this probiotic concentrate is scientifically proven to boost and brighten dull, tired skin affected by pollution. After all, a healthy complexion starts with a healthy microbiome. The blend of prebiotics, probiotics, and antioxidants activate the “good bacteria” in your gut for healthy skin that’s less susceptible to environmental damage.

Eau Thermale Avene Mineral High Protection Tinted Compact SPF 50

There’s nothing better than a multitasking tinted foundation, especially one that offers SPF 50. Eau Thermale Avene Mineral High Protection Tinted Compact’s cream-to-powder formula offers broad-spectrum protection via 100% mineral filters and non-greasy, water-resistant matte coverage. Infused with patented pre-tocopheryl (a photostable form of vitamin E), this lightweight foundation retains its powerful antioxidant properties under intense light exposure to keep skin hydrated and protected against free radical damage. Complete with a mirror and sponge applicator, pop the compact in your bag for anti-pollution protection and foundation touch-ups whenever you need them!

Bio: Multi-published author Lena Nelson Dooley has had more than 900,000 copies of her books sold. She is a member of ACFW and the local chapter, ACFW - DFW.She’s a member of Christian Authors’ Network and GatewayChurch in Southlake, Texas.

She has been on the ECPA and CBA Bestseller lists, Publisher’s Weekly bestseller list, and several Amazon Bestseller lists as well as a reviewer’s Top Ten Books of 2011. She has won over a dozen major awards.

She hosts “The Lena Nelson Dooley Show” on the Along Came a Writer Blogtalk radio network.

Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
I don’t think an author can write an authentic story without some things about them being a part of the story. In Esther’s Temptation, I understand what Esther felt and used the emotions I felt when I had the same kind of temptation.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
Quirky could be my middle name. I’ve often done things most people wouldn’t try. When I was attending OuachitaBaptist Collegein Arkadelphia, Arkansas, (back when it was a college, instead of a university) I did the most dangerous thing I ever did. Ouachita is in a mountainous region. On the campus property, there was a place where a large pipe, maybe 12 inches across, connected two parts of the mountain. It was probably about 40 feet above the ravine. A group of us were hiking in that area. I don’t remember why I did it, but I crossed that ravine walking on that pipe. I don’t remember anyone else doing it with me. Probably for a good reason.

When did you first discover you were a writer?
I came from a family where writing was just part of family life. Only one other person in my immediate family has been published. My brother is a retired minister, and he had a book of sermons published before I became a professional writer. You can read the testimony of how God told me to become a professional writer by clicking on the About Me tab at the top of this blog.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
Most of the nonfiction books I read, besides the Bible, are reference books I use for research. But I love reading fiction. I’ve read books ever since I was five years old. I love most genres, except horror. In the last few years, there are so many good, well-written Christian novels that I’ve stopped reading any fiction besides Christian fiction.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
Keeping close contact with the Lord is the best way. And spending time with my family and friends is a close second.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
Some arrive when the character does. Sometimes, I use a name to honor someone dear to me. And there’s always name websites, especially if I want a historical name or a name for a specific nationality.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
Not being prideful, but having points of pride in what the Lord has helped me accomplish. My dear husband and I have been married almost 54 years. Our anniversary is in November. We raised wonderful children, who have given us grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I’m blessed when readers let me know how one of my books changed their lives. And God has blessed me to allow my books to win awards and appear on bestseller lists.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
I would love to be an eagle and soar above the earth, riding on the wind currents.

    What is your favorite food?
    Dark chocolate and TexMex food.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
When I started writing professionally, we didn’t have all the professional organizations that are available today. I was a storyteller, so I just told a story. Later I began to learn the real craft of writing, and there have been many people along the way who helped me.

Tell us about the featured book.
This book is #9 in the Thanksgiving Books and Blessing series. All the books in the series will be released in a collection in early November.

    Here’s the back cover copy:
Saddle weary, former deputy USMarshal Jac Andrews rides into Denton, Texas. He’d hunted a swindler and his daughter—or identical twin daughters if Jac is right—and he feels he finally has caught up with this criminal gang. Unfortunately, He is immediately distracted by the lovely redhead, Esther Brians.

Esther, feeling like an old maid surrounded by all her close friends who are happy married couples, is drawn to the intense gaze, blue as the Texas sky, of an unknown cowboy. But several things cause her to become wary of his intentions—and his spiritual well-being.

Has this unsaved lawman captured Esther’s heart or will the Lord deliver her from the temptation of Jac’s presence?

What will it take for Jac to win this lovely lady and become Esther’s husband?

Please give us the first page of the book.
August – Deep in the heart of Texas
1896. How could it be 1896? When Jac Andrews started this quest, he figured he’d be married with children by this time in his life. All the years had passed without achieving his goals—both of them.

He sure hoped that was Denton, Texas, up ahead and not a mirage. His head ached from the bright sunlight and long hours. He’d been in the saddle so long he felt as if it were fused to the seat of his pants. Pants he’d worn until they could almost stand up by themselves. Finally, he could have a bath, clean clothes, a shave, a hot meal, and a real bed. In that order.

But the long ride had been worth it. He was bone weary, but he could sense that indefinable excitement he always felt when he was about to catch his prey. Peter Graham and his daughter had to be just ahead. He’d been chasing this gang for too many years—through hard winters, mostly mild summers, and he’d seen a lot of the territory in the United States. But this was the farthest south they’d ventured. Denton, Texas, was the end of the line. For him and for the Grahams—in more ways than one.

As he approached, the haze hovering on the horizon solidified into a nice enough town, but Jac hoped it wouldn’t take long to bring the Grahams to justice. He wanted to get on with his life, and he couldn’t until he had finished this one thing. Although he was only thirty years old, he felt ancient. He’d seen enough of the seamy side of life to age him beyond his years. Criminals and their evil deeds had hardened him so much he barely knew who he was anymore. Certainly not the idealistic young man who became a Deputy U.S. Marshal all those years ago. He didn’t even know where he belonged. Maybe when he finished this final arrest, he could find out. For the first time in over ten years, he could have a life of his own.

But he didn’t dare take his mind off his prize. This arrest had to come before anything else. He wouldn’t saddle any woman with a man who was hardly ever be home. He would really retire from hunting criminals and maybe find some kind of business he’d enjoy. He had plenty of money stashed away to buy or start one. He didn’t use much money while he’d been trying to catch this slippery weasel, who preyed on unsuspecting, upstanding citizens.

Because of his obsession to catch Peter Graham and his daughter, he was no longer a marshal. The U.S. Marshal in Washington, D.C., had given him a choice, give up this quest or turn in his badge. Jac knew his boss thought the ultimatum would make him back down. With great reluctance, he’d removed the star with the circle around it, the badge that made him official. Since then, he’d been on his own as he followed the trail of this confidence man and his family.
Good thing he’d saved so much of his pay over the years, and his needs were negligible. A pile of his money remained safe in a bank back East, waiting for him to get to the point where he could start living a real life. He wouldn’t have to worry about finances while he established himself. That thought brought a stiff smile to his face.

About Altair HyperWorks. Altair HyperWorks is the most comprehensive, open architecture CAE simulation platform in the industry, offering the best technologies to design and optimize high performance, weight efficient and innovative products. HyperWorks includes best-in-class modeling, linear and nonlinear analyses, structural and system-level optimization, fluid and multi-body dynamics simulation, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), multiphysics analysis, model-based development, and data management solutions

About Altair HyperWorks Solvers. HyperWorks Solvers is a collection of finite element and multibody dynamics solvers for structural, fluid-dynamics and systems simulation. These solvers can be employed for simulation driven design as well as design optimization.

With the 13.0 release, a renaming of our structural solver products has taken place in order to accommodate the growing trend of applying optimization technologies more intensively in the product development process, instead of just single run analysis. Moving forward, our structural and thermal analysis and optimization product for linear and non-linear events will be called OptiStruct; this includes analysis disciplines such as linear and non-linear statics, noise and vibrations and thermal analysis. Our product for highly-nonlinear, typically transient events such as crash, impact, forming or blast analysis will be RADIOSS. Both codes are developed with a strong focus on the above mentioned disciplines, and will continue to leverage technology mutually. OptiStruct will continue to leverage the widely used bulk data input format, and RADIOSS will continue to use the well suited block format. Moving forward, OptiStruct will also serve as the general framework for optimization involving multiple physics incl ding CFD and FSI with AcuSolve and multi-body dynamics with MotionSolve, and will also offer API to integrate additional solvers and solutions within a general multi-model framework.

About Altair. Altair is focused on the development and broad application of simulation technology to synthesize and optimize designs, processes and decisions for improved business performance. Privately held with more than 2,000 employees, Altair is headquartered in Troy, Michigan, USA and operates more than 45 offices throughout 22 countries. Today, Altair serves more than 5,000 corporate clients across broad industry segments.

    (3) redis

    3、Redis

    String、List、Set、Sorted Set、hashes

    4、Redis

    5、Redis

    6、Redis

    10、Redis

    1.codis。

    13、Redis

(Session Cache)

    ZRANGE user_scores 0 10 WITHSCORES

    16、Jedis与Redisson对比有什么优缺点?

    Jedis是Redis的Java实现的客户端,其API提供了比较全面的Redis命令的支持;

    Redisson实现了分布式和可扩展的Java数据结构,和Jedis相比,功能较为简单,不支持字符串操作,不支持排序、事务、管道、分区等Redis特性。Redisson的宗旨是促进使用者对Redis的关注分离,从而让使用者能够将精力更集中地放在处理业务逻辑上。

    17、Redis如何设置密码及验证密码?

    设置密码:config set requirepass 123456

    授权密码:auth 123456

    18、说说Redis哈希槽的概念?

    Redis集群没有使用一致性hash,而是引入了哈希槽的概念,Redis集群有16384个哈希槽,每个key通过CRC16校验后对16384取模来决定放置哪个槽,集群的每个节点负责一部分hash槽。

    19、Redis集群的主从复制模型是怎样的?

    为了使在部分节点失败或者大部分节点无法通信的情况下集群仍然可用,所以集群使用了主从复制模型,每个节点都会有N-1个复制品.

    20、Redis集群会有写操作丢失吗?为什么?

    Redis并不能保证数据的强一致性,这意味这在实际中集群在特定的条件下可能会丢失写操作。

    21、Redis集群之间是如何复制的?

    异步复制

    22、Redis集群最大节点个数是多少?

    16384个。

    23、Redis集群如何选择数据库?

    Redis集群目前无法做数据库选择,默认在0数据库。

    24、怎么测试Redis的连通性?

    ping

    25、Redis中的管道有什么用?

    一次请求/响应服务器能实现处理新的请求即使旧的请求还未被响应。这样就可以将多个命令发送到服务器,而不用等待回复,最后在一个步骤中读取该答复。

    这就是管道(pipelining),是一种几十年来广泛使用的技术。例如许多POP3协议已经实现支持这个功能,大大加快了从服务器下载新邮件的过程。

    26、怎么理解Redis事务?

    事务是一个单独的隔离操作:事务中的所有命令都会序列化、按顺序地执行。事务在执行的过程中,不会被其他客户端发送来的命令请求所打断。

    事务是一个原子操作:事务中的命令要么全部被执行,要么全部都不执行。

    27、Redis事务相关的命令有哪几个?

    MULTI、EXEC、DISCARD、WATCH

    28、Redis key的过期时间和永久有效分别怎么设置?

    EXPIRE和PERSIST命令。

    29、Redis如何做内存优化?

    尽可能使用散列表(hashes),散列表(是说散列表里面存储的数少)使用的内存非常小,所以你应该尽可能的将你的数据模型抽象到一个散列表里面。

    比如你的web系统中有一个用户对象,不要为这个用户的名称,姓氏,邮箱,密码设置单独的key,而是应该把这个用户的所有信息存储到一张散列表里面。

    30、Redis回收进程如何工作的?

    一个客户端运行了新的命令,添加了新的数据。

    Redi检查内存使用情况,如果大于maxmemory的限制, 则根据设定好的策略进行回收。

    一个新的命令被执行,等等。

    所以我们不断地穿越内存限制的边界,通过不断达到边界然后不断地回收回到边界以下。

    如果一个命令的结果导致大量内存被使用(例如很大的集合的交集保存到一个新的键),不用多久内存限制就会被这个内存使用量超越。

Nhà báo kỳ cựu Bob Woodward và cuốn “Fear: Trump in the White House.” (Hình: Alex Wong/Getty Images for Meet the Press & thoughtgallery.org)

Ông Greenberg cũng là tác giả của một cuốn sách lý thú “Republic of Spin: An Inside History of the American Presidency.”
