SPONSOR NOTE: HomeSure Lending will provide you a mortgage. It's a simple process, really: some tax returns, maybe some other stuff, and then Matt contacts various lenders to see who will provide the best deal. It is a quick process, as well, and one where you know the guy providing your mortgage has your best interests at heart because he gets business through word of mouth and MGoBlog advertising. Also he has opinions you can talk about related to Michigan in down times.

FORMATION NOTES: About 50/50 between shotgun and other stuff, with an emphasis on TEs and WRs—just 12 fullback snaps for Mason. Nothing stood out as unusual. WMU responded with a four-man front on every play and some rolled up safeties... sometimes absurdly so.

This was less of a problem for the run game than you'd think but RBs did have to dodge these guys at the line from time to time. The flipside was the Nico Collins touchdown, which was super easy because a safety lined up at eight yards.

SUBSTITUTION NOTES: Same OL as the opener. Second team was Mayfield/Filiaga/Spanellis/Honigford/Hudson. QBs went Patterson, McCaffrey, Peters. Higdon and Evans got closer to equal reps with Wilson indeed the #3. WR rotation was pretty much the same as the opener, with DPJ and Collins clear-ish starters on the outside and Martin the only guy rotating in much. TEs were the same.

Muhammad, Schoonmaker, Turner, Milton, and Hayes not getting in strongly implies redshirts are coming for them.

M28 1 10 Shotgun 2TE tight 1 2 2 4-3 even 7.5 Pass TE out Gentry 10
CB blitz with Gentry running a two yard out right where the blitz came from. Patterson IDs and throws, nice catchable ball that Gentry turns up for a first down. (CA, 3, protection 1/1)
M38 1 10 I-Form 2 1 2 4-3 over 7.5 Penalty False Start JBB -5
JBB -1.
M33 1 15 Shotgun trips 1 1 3 Nickel over 6 Run Inside zone Higdon 2
Patterson(-2) has a clear keep read with the backside end crashing and gives instead. DE doesn’t screw it up. This is a solid gain and maybe a bust right to the second level if DE shuffles, with Bredeson(+1) driving his man about two yards downfield and Ruiz(+1) finding and kicking a blitzball LB. Higdon’s about to test that gap and either Bredeson’s guy gets him or he’s to the secondary when the DE tackles.
M35 2 13 Shotgun twin TE H twins 1 2 2 4-3 even 7.5 Run Power O Higdon 2
Playside DE slanting and trying to stick as close to the releasing JBB as possible. McKeon(-1) is a beat slow realizing this and allows some penetration. This penetration picks off Bredeson(-1) but Bredeson should be able to get around this. Instead he stops and refocuses on the DE. Higdon(+0.5) cuts behind into this gap and is almost able to dodge the free LB but gets tripped up after juking him to the ground.
M37 3 11 Shotgun trips 1 1 3 Nickel even 6 Pass Flare screen Evans 0
Conservative, but at least it’s Evans-focused? McKeon(-2) is supposed to crack the playside LB and releases way too deep and waits for him to try to get outside. Instead he just runs upfield. WMU appears to leave NT in spy zone so he flows out in the midst of Ruiz and Bredeson. Those two guys have Evans bracketed and by the time he WOOPS the linebacker the cavalry has arrived. (CA, 3, screen, RPS -1)

M19 1 10 Shotgun twin TE H 1 2 2 4-3 under 7 Run Jet sweep Thomas 6
Technically a touch pass so delete one passing attempt for Patterson. WMU seems to feel this is coming and a S comes up to hit Eubanks at the LOS. Thomas goes around this to the edge, which is open as DPJ(+1) had a long long block on a CB who didn’t press the issue much. Thomas(+1) is both fast and able to fend off Eubanks’s guy.
M25 2 4 Ace 3TE 1 3 1 4-3 over 9 Pass Waggle comeback Martin 8
WMU blitzes into this but the LB initially checks inside run instead of running directly at Patterson. This gives Patterson a window, but not much of one. He’s rolling away from his throwing arm but manages to set up and fling a sideline dart to Martin for an inch perfect conversion. Dang. (DO+, 1, protection N/A, RPS -1)
M33 1 10 Shotgun trips 1 1 3 Nickel under 6 Run Inside zone Higdon 4
WMU exchanges on the backside. JBB(+1) does a good job to fend off the shuffling DE and then affect the LB once he reads the handoff and attacks. Ruiz can’t help Onwenu(-1) as he’s got a blitzball LB coming to him; Ruiz(+0.5) does handle him. Bredeson(+1) stays attached through an attempted rip and drives his guy upfield, creating the hole. Higdon(+0.5) finds it after a slight delay and hits it. Onwneu’s guy pops off and grabs him just as he’s about to break through.
M37 2 6 Ace 2TE tight 1 2 2 4-3 under 8.5 Run Inside zone Higdon 4
LB level is spread out by M’s formation and slants away. Bredeson(+1) and Ruiz(+1) pick up the NT and shove him four yards downfield. Runyan(-1) has a DE slant outside of him and passes him up. He then checks the second level and decides not to go get a safety creeping down. He also doesn’t stop and stall the DT now inside of McKeon, who’s trying but has no angle to do anything with this guy. Higdon cuts behind the huge blowout block and gets tackled from the side by DT.
M41 3 2 I-Form Big twin TE 2 2 1 4-3 under 8.5 Run Down G Higdon 43
Power with a playside guard pull and he kicks out as the FB jets through the gap. Onwenu(+1) pulls and gets a blitzer. Mason(+3) HAMMERS the playside LB back into an overhang corner. Gentry(+0.5) and McKeon(+0.5) both get relatively easy blocks done. JBB might hit his guy too hard? He nails the guy, and then that guy spins off, giving ground to get around, and JBB can only chase him to Higdon. Not really his fault. Higdon(+2) runs through that attempted arm tackle and then cuts back behind a safety, setting sail into the open field. S was able to slow him enough to prevent a TD.
O16 1 10 I-Form Big twin TE 2 2 1 5-3 under 9 Run Down G Higdon 0
Back to the well. To the other side. WMU has something on to defeat it this time, with a five-man line featuring a playside end who dives inside the puller and a double eagle front that allows the NT to split Ruiz(-2) and Onwenu; Ruiz leaves immediately without getting a brush on the NT and Onwenu can’t do anything with that. Ruiz then doesn’t get a second level block, targeting the guy Gentry is targeting. Runyan(+0.5) turns in a guy slanting away from him pretty well. Other blocks are push-ish and untested because of the WMU dive and the Ruiz issue. RPS -1.
O16 2 10 Ace 2TE tight 1 2 2 4-3 over 7 Pass Waggle TE flat McKeon 16
Man I don’t know how you let this happen on second and ten. PA fake sucks in the entire LB level and the backside S to the point where McKeon can turn up the standard TE flat route on a waggle for a TD. (CA, 3, protection N/A, RPS +2)

Ln Dn Ds O Form RB TE WR D Form Box Type Play Player Yards
M33 1 10 Shotgun 3-wide 1 1 3 4-3 over 6.5 Run Down G Higdon 67
Playside DT seems to bust hard. He jets outside. DE jets outside. Bredeson(+1) gets a good widening kick on the DT and the DE is gone too. Ruiz does the run-by on a nose tackle who dives inside of him; NT has occupied nobody and is run by immediately. Gentry(+1) gets a second level block and moves that guy out; Runyan and Onwenu both get the other LB. Ruiz has nobody to block. Higdon(+1) barely has to do anything but does show impressive long speed, beating the WMU safety to the corner and dusting him.

Ln Dn Ds O Form RB TE WR D Form Box Type Play Player Yards
O46 1 10 Shotgun 3-wide 1 1 3 4-3 over 6.5 Run Split zone Higdon 19
RPS for M here as WMU splits out a linebacker and then blitzes him off the edge. He’s unable to shuffle because of his wide starting position. Backside DE and LB both slant to the IZ action. Gentry(+0.5) kicks the LB. JBB(+2) attaches and drives the backside DE two yards downfield, providing a great angle of attack for Higdon(+1). He takes it and runs through an arm tackle for YAC. RPS +1.
O27 1 10 Shotgun 3-wide 1 1 3 4-3 over 6.5 Run Down G Evans 27
No bust here and a tighter lane for Evans to hit. It has a bonus S at eight-yards-and-charging, too. Evans(+2) gives him the business; S collapses in pile of viscera. Lane there because Runyan(+1) turned in a DT; Gentry(+1) sealed a LB inside; Ruiz(+1) got the other LB. Bredeson(+0.5) got just enough of a kick. This was real close to an RPS negative if that S splattered Evans in the hole.
Drive Notes: Touchdown, 21-0, 1 min 1st Q. Ensuing WMU punt blocked.
Ln Dn Ds O Form RB TE WR D Form Box Type Play Player Yards
O24 1 10 Shotgun 3-wide 1 1 3 4-3 even 7 Pass TE wheel McKeon Inc
Bredeson(-1) takes on a guy diving inside of him; dude spins through. Bredeson is still attached and Patterson could move away from this if he wanted but he sees that he’s got McKeon for a TD and tries to get the throw out; hit on the release. Ball sails. Runyan was having some difficulties but his guy seems to trip. McKeon is wide open. (PR, 0, protection ½, RPS +2)
O24 2 10 Shotgun 3-wide 1 1 3 4-3 over 6.5 Run Split zone Higdon 9
I guess? This isn’t one of those isos where you insert a TE because Ruiz releases instead of doubling a DT, but JBB kicks a DE out instead of letting him go for the read. This is again a read nobody play. M just about blocks it, with JBB(+1) getting that kick and Ruiz(+0.5) getting around to a LB; looks like Higdon(+2) can attack that backside gap. He doesn’t trust it, understandably, since it look iffy. He then cuts to a frontside gap with an unblocked S in it. Onwenu’s block is just okay so he’s tripping over Onwenu’s legs when the safety hits him but he somehow stays up and goes and gets nine.
O15 3 1 Goal line 2 2 1 5-3 under 10 Run Down G Higdon 0
Bredeson(-1) trips coming out and falls right in the lane. McKeon(-1) rocked back by a DE. Runyan(-1) blocks down and is unable to hold his ground. By the time Higdon gets to the hole it’s been slammed shut.
O15 4 1 Goal line 2 2 1 5-3 under 10 Run Iso Higdon 1
M runs at a bubble in the WMU line. Martin and McKeon have a DE and move him a bit; Runyan and Bredeson double and bury a DT who’s firing out super low. This leaves Mason(+1) against the whole LB level. He wins the kamikaze battle against the first guy who shows and that’s just enough to get Higdon across the line. Too close for comfort.
O14 1 10 Shotgun 4-wide tight 1 2 2 4-3 even 9 Pass Drag DPJ 12
First read is Evans on a wheel but Collins can’t quite drive his defender into the path of a LB who hauls ass to get out on this. WMU sends six and one of them comes from LB depth so the line doesn’t pick him up. Patterson’s facing down that guy and is able to hit plan B, which is DPJ on mesh. His arm slot here is weird and he doesn’t step into it but job gets done. (CA+, 3, protection 0/1, TEAM -1)
O2 1 G Goal line 2 2 1 Goal line 11 Run Down G Evans 2
Evans bounces as McKeon(+1) and Gentry(+0.5) seal in their guys, with Gentry losing his a bit. Bredeson pulls around and is just able to get a shove in on a LB who’s attacking. Guy gets an ankle tackle in that Evans(+1) is able to power through into the endzone.

O44 1 5 Ace 3-wide tight 1 1 3 4-3 under 7 Pass PA Post Collins 44
Very, very bad zone coverage by the two guys with deep responsibilities here. Both are way too casual out of their backpedals and the deep S gets run by like he’s not there. Patterson makes no mistake. (CA, 3, protection 2/2, RPS +2). Collins route +, I guess. But this was too easy.

M14 1 10 Shotgun 2TE twins 1 2 2 4-3 over 7.5 Run Pin and pull Higdon 1
McKeon(-0.5) gets ripped through and playside DE flows down the line. McKeon stays attached and manages to keep pushing. Higdon tries the outside but WMU players reacted quickly and have contained the edge. Higdon(-2) cuts back, way slow for my taste, and manages to get behind the McKeon block. Bredeson(+1) eliminated playside DT to help create the space. Ruiz(+0.5) cut off a LB to help. Onwenu is harassing a DT who has the ability to get over if Higdon does try to hit it fast.
M15 2 9 Shotgun twin TE 1 2 2 4-3 over 7 Run Power O Higdon 5
Thomas in, fake jet with action underneath it. WMU run blitzes and has a safety at 6 and one at 8, so heavy sledding. Onwenu(+1) finds his guy and moves him out; JBB(+1) steps around a DT and locks him out so there’s a lane up the gut. Bredeson(-2) pulls and neither hits the unblocked EMLOS who is widening out for Thomas or goes in that gap. Instead he hits the guy JBB has locked out. Higdon(+0.5) does find this gap and hits it. Unblocked S and unblocked DE converge to hold it down. Ruiz(+0.5) did a good job to ID and cut off a blitzer.
M20 1 10 Shotgun 3-wide H 1 1 3 Exotic 7 Pass Rollout comeback DPJ 14
Patterson rolls out directly into an edge blitz. He’s able to run around that dude and survey downfield. DPJ(route+) is running an out that a zone defender is going to be underneath so he converts it to a comeback and runs himself open. Patterson hits him in the number. (DO+, 3, protection N/A, RPS -1)
M34 1 10 Shotgun 2TE twins 1 2 2 4-3 over 7.5 Run Pin and pull Evans -1
Another pin and pull on which WMU cuts off the outside but leaves a lane inside that RB does not see. In this case it’s Evans(-2). McKeon(+1) turns in a relevant DE and Onwenu(+0.5) is able to climb to the backside LB, delaying him significantly. Two LBs flow hard outside and get outside Ruiz and Runyan, who both get adequate kicks. Evans misses the cut and by the time he takes it it’s filled.
M33 2 11 Shotgun 3-wide 1 1 3 4-3 over 7 Pass TE out McKeon 6
This may get out too fast as McKeon and Collins are crossing right next to each other when the catch is made. Man coverage so not a huge deal but Collins’s guy is able to fall off and tackle when it looked like Collins was going to rub the S on McKeon and open up a nice chunk of YAC. Still a decent gain. (CA, 3, protection 1/1)
M39 3 5 Pistol 3-wide 1 1 3 4-3 over 7 Pass Waggle throwaway N/A Inc
Rollout against his body. McKeon very covered; DPJ offscreen but probably covered as well. Feel like Patterson does have a shot at Perry on a crossing route but he’s getting pressure and may not be comfortable getting his shoulders around for a throw that could be dangerous. (TA, N/A, protection N/A, RPS -1)

O47 1 10 Ace twins 1 2 2 4-3 even 7.5 Run Inside zone Evans 5
LBs are blitzballing so there’s a lot of momentum to stall at the line. M does, neither letting a LB through or a DL, and now they just have to get a crack. They cannot quite do this. Onwenu(+1) is able to move a LB out and Evans hops through the gap behind him. JBB can’t quite drive or lock out the other DT but doesn’t exactly lose the block either. Evans(+0.5) plows into him and is able to blast him back because JBB is still leaning on him.
O42 2 5 Ace trips tight 1 2 2 4-3 over 7 Run Counter Evans 18
Very crack sweep formation, counter step and then run away from the crack sweep look. Runyan(+1) and Bredeson(+1) eliminate guys they’re blocking down on. Onwenu’s guy on the edge tries to dive inside of him; Onwenu(+1) handles that well and seals him away. Playside LB is coming right behind this guy to the outside; Gentry runs by him. S shows to fill for the gap the LB is vacating; Gentry does block him. Good Never Turn Upfield. Evans(+3) hops outside the LB; LB falls. He then cuts inside the Gentry block. DPJ (+1) blasts a LB by him. Evans then WOOPS another safety and stiffarms a DL for a chunk.
O24 1 10 Offset I 2 1 2 4-3 under 8 Run Counter Evans 0
Similar play from a different formation. Runyan(-2) gets surged through. Onwenu(+1) is pulling; he gets met by that guy and runs through him to still get his kickout. Runyan then really really appears to hold the guy (refs +2) but gets away with it; Mason(+1) runs up and blasts him. Evans is trying to cut inside the kickout when blitzer from the backside gets him. Gentry(-2) appears to bust here as he hits a LB further inside who JBB is setting up to wall off. JBB chases the outside guy and gets to look bad because of someone else’s block. Didn’t matter much as free LB because of Runyan stuff was also there.
O24 2 10 Shotgun 2TE twins 1 2 2 4-3 over 7.5 Pass Rollout out Perry Inc
Man they just do not want to pass block from the pocket at all. WMU is expecting this stuff now. Perry’s going to get whomped for three or four yards if this is complete; it’s high. (IN, 1, protection 1/1)
O24 3 10 Shotgun 3-wide 1 1 3 Okie two 7 Pass Dumpoff Wilson 2

WMU has six guys at the LOS and starts backing a couple out presnap as the overhang LB threatens; this looks like nobody accounted for him. JBB is picking which guy to let through and picks the outside one. That guy is about to sack when Patterson gets off an under hand chuck to Wilson, who released after finding no one to block and may be you pass pro culprit. (CA+, 3, protection 0/2, TEAM -2)

WMU OLB right in the throwing lane as Gentry(-1) seems to block him there. Patterson still throws this but the ball has to avoid that guy and that takes DPJ away from his blocks and fouls the play up. (CA, 3, screen, RPS -1)
M49 2 10 Shotgun 3-wide 1 1 3 4-3 under 7 Run Split zone Evans 27
Big gap up the gut as Onwenu(+1) and JBB(+1) blow out a DT. M catches an exchange so Gentry(+1) blocks a guy charging down and LB containing Patterson eliminates himself. Ruiz(+0.5) and Bredeson(+0.5) move the other guy and Evans(+2) is through before the LB level can get back to him. Evans then sets up a Collins(+1) block and bursts outside to turn a chunk into two chunks. RPS +1, split zone vs exchange.
O24 1 10 Shotgun 3-wide 1 1 3 4-3 over 7.5 Pass Fade DPJ Inc (Pen +15)
Quick fade with no other read, really. DPJ and DB seem to have some mutual arm-fighting and DPJ is reduced to diving at this ball with one hand. He can’t make the spectacular catch. He does draw a PI call as DB clearly grabs his jersey and impedes his dive at the ball. (CA, 0, protection N/A)
O9 1 G Shotgun 3-wide 1 1 3 4-3 under 7.5 Run Split zone Evans 3
Another exchange. DE is prepared for split zone this time and dives under Gentry, no fault of his, to force a cutback into the LB coming behind. Evans(+0.5) makes the cut he has to and manages to grind out a few. JBB(+1) gave him the lane with a driving block. RPS -1, back to the well.
O6 2 G Ace trips tight TE 1 3 1 Goal line 10 Run Inside zone Evans 2
Playside DE takes a double from Runyan and Bredeson(-1), splitting it once Runyan has to peel off for a charging LB. Bredeson is not in position to finish or seal the guy and he surges upfield. Eubanks(-1) lets his guy under him and he chases to Evans to help tackle.
O4 3 G Shotgun trips TE 1 1 3 4-3 over 9 Pass Corner DPJ 4

Bredeson(+0.5) gets inside of this instead of heading outside where his initial flight path took him. He’s able to whack a LB and create some space for Evans. Unfortunately for the TEs they blew their guy right back into the RB’s path because they’re expecting the ball to go outside of them. Various folks converge. Evans(+0.5) did a good job to follow Bredeson.

Good decisive cutback from Wilson(+1), who finds a backside gap. Gentry(+0.5) got a kick; Hudson(+2) buries a DT. Honigford had to pop off a double almost immediately to try and hit a LB, which he barely does; Hudson does this on his own. To a MAC backup, probably. But still! any less ennui'd?

The man... who threw good? Gives me the tiniest ember of hope within my black, cynical heart?

Sure, let's start there. Michigan didn't turn to Patterson frequently. When they did he did very well:

  Good   Neutral   Bad   Ovr
Notre Dame 2+ 18(4)+ 1   5 1   1(1) 2 2 1*   77% -
WMU 3++ 9(2)++     2 1     1 2     77% -

3 DOs and four pressure-affected throws in the good column is a hell of a lot in 13 throws, with nothing serious in the negative column. Those pressured throws were almost all waggles that WMU was rushing out on because it was predictable that Michigan would try to avoid, you know, blocking. And this is an eye-opener:

Doing more or less that again later in in the game doubly so. This awkward arm-slot no-step dump to DPJ is also an eye opener in a slightly different manner:

And sure, do this, I like it.

He's got the slant there but man wants a DO on his chart, I guess.

Patterson had a couple of misses but they were narrow. His deep post to Grant Perry was about six inches too high for him and would have been just fine for Zach Gentry; an out to Oliver Martin was well behind him. Everything else was on point, and he got to display his ability to not dorf it when the easy opportunity presents itself:

You never know for sure but given what I saw last year that seems like Patterson intentionally leaving it a bit short because he'd rather do that than try the perfect in-stride pass and increase his chances of blowing it.

Also I guess the running many yards was slightly encouraging.

Yes, I thought that was all right.

Run blocking dipped a bit relative to ND's surprisingly good number but remained above the Mendoza line of 66% that we want to hit for a real good day on the ground. Michigan's much better ground game has a lot to do with the level of competition—a giant DL bust paved the way for a 67-yard touchdown on which Cesar Ruiz released and had no one to block—and a lot to do with the running backs, who made the most of the opportunities provided them.

Pass protection gets a big ol' incomplete. It was clear Michigan did not want to do much, if any of it. Pass pro opportunities were incredibly rare. When they risked it at all it was often on a relatively quick throw. The only extended incidents were the overthrow to McKeon where Bredeson got spun through and the near-conversion on third and twenty four where Michigan stoned WMU:

Hooray for that but running a zillion rollouts against WMU probably says more than the above about Michigan's trust in their pass protection.

Because I knew you would demand backup taeks, you maniac, I reviewed Michigan's last couple drives. Wilson and McCaffrey's scores are in the chart above. Only three of the backup OL drew numbers on the five plays I charted. Honigford was +3, Hudson +5, Mayfield +2. That's a lot in a short amount of time.

The McCaffrey-led TD drive did most of its work behind the right side of the line, where James Hudson and Joel Honigford did good work. Wilson's first chunk run was mostly those two guys getting blasting single blocks:

#59 RG and #55 RT

The next play featured a Hudson pancake that Wilson decisively cut behind:

#55 RT

A little bit later the gap is again between those guys, with Honigford reading the play in front of him and popping off on a charging LB effectively:

#59 RG and #55 RT

Pile on all the degree of difficulty caveats you want, they're all true. But all they can do is maul the dudes in front of them and Hudson and Honigford were 3/3 on opportunities to do so, with a little bit of "I know what I'm doing" thrown in there. Hudson's gotten a lot of talk and could push through into a starting job this year so you might expect that. Honigford hasn't generated word one from practice chatterers, though, so that's more meaningful for him. If he'd done that in a spring game against the second string people would have been saying his name all offseason.

Finally, the only play of relative note on the final drive was Jalen Mayfield depositing a WMU LB ten yards downfield:

LT #75

This might be a backup and it's definitely a guy who's out of give-a-damn but remember the straws and the clutching thereof: we do it because it feels good. There's your Jalen Mayfield straw.

Can I talk about the actual starters now?

No. While we're here, Tru Wilson takes?

I liked him. He's not Karan Higdon-sized in any way—lies, damn lies, and rosters—but in the clips above he's quick and decisive with his cuts and has a little wiggle. He set up his block in the Mayfield clip above very well, threatening outside and then cutting off his teammate's butt.

His one pass protection incident was the kind of cut block that flips a dude on his head:

#13 RB

If I had to guess I'd say that more than anything is the reason he's the #3 back.

His role isn't likely to be large if Michigan's not taking full advantage of Chris Evans, especially since he seems like Evans minus the top gear and nasty open-field moves. Early progress towards becoming a Kovacs Memorial Non-Walk-On, though.

Speaking of, Jake McCurry:

Nice route, nice dodge. Very much a slot only, but he's got a shot.

NOW can I talk about the starters?

I just did him.

So. Yeah. Any questions.

The thing they were doing, thing?

I called it dart in the game column but that was me getting it mixed up. Michigan ran "down G" on many of their successful plays. Down G is a power variant that pulls the playside guard—power pulls the backside guard—and tries to attack off tackle. The backside of the line runs inside zone; the playside tackle and whatever TEs you're using block down. The idea is to bash the edge of the DL inside while that pulling G pops whoever the force player is wide enough to jet through that gap. Seth has more detail.

It worked pretty well. Higdon's 67-yard TD and Evans's 27-yard TD were both Down G, and while the Evans one required some fancy footwork by the running back, you can see what Down G was buying Michigan in the WMU linebacker level:

WMU MLB over Onwenu

If Onwenu pulls that guy knows it's power and runs his ass off to get there. Since he doesn't and the C, RG, and RT look like they're running IZ he plays it like IZ, which threatens various gaps and backside cuts. He does not haul ass for the POA. By the time the RB jets for the gap off tackle, Ruiz is out there cutting the LB off.

This is good: it's a coherent running game. Down G fits with inside zone and power and won some blocks for Michigan by confusing the opposition. It is nice that sometimes they are confused and Michigan is not.

I'm confused: we're not confused?

Well... this is still a work in progress. One of the early Higdon runs that culminated in the 13-minutes-left-in-the-first-quarter booing was plain old power on which McKeon gave up a little penetration. I still think the puller should be able to get around it. Bredeson doesn't quite manage it:

LG #74 pulling

Instead he hits McKeon's guy, which doesn't help Higdon since he's cutting back like the blocking tells him to. When this happened to Onwenu later he handled it in a very Onwenu way: just running through whatever gnat appears in his windshield. One of the 500-level things about running the ball on a power play is being able to re-gap when the defense runs slants that do stuff like the above: not quite.

But it is a work in progress, emphasis on progress. Michigan's faced a wide array of stunts and blitzes and while they've been less than perfect I don't think I've seen anyone get a free run on an obviously doomed play, iffy zone read stuff aside. From time to time I'll see someone doing something that seems pretty advanced, awareness-wise. Here Bredeson is able to redirect inside when WMU's defensive approach creates a big canyon in there:

#74 LG pulling

That's a re-gap. Hooray.

There are other hints that things are coming together. Bushell-Beatty's block here isn't all that relevant to the four yards Michigan gets but he's able to fend off a DE outside of him for a bit while keeping an eye on a linebacker the whole time and getting him, too, when he charges:

RT #76

That's a guy who seems to know that once the DE is delayed even a bit he's not relevant and he should be alert for someone trying to shoot a gap. I like that. It seems good. And, you know, aware.

The very next play was almost there but after Runyan passes up a guy slanting outside of him he starts checking around for dudes. This is okay, but when he finds none he doesn't look for work and McKeon ends up escorting the guy who slanted to Higdon:

LT #75

Still four yards because Ruiz and Bredeson ejected the NT. Going forward the mental stuff is more important than blasting various MAC DL off the ball because that's all about you and not the opposition. And it's better, way better. It isn't a machine.

Also the pushing.

Yes, there was a fair amount of pushing people off the ball. JBB was able to cave guys in with some regularity; this split zone is going to have a gap either way because of WMU's approach but JBB's able to plow his guy so Higdon's able to get vertical quickly and eat up yards:

RT #76

Blowouts were common, especially on that right side:

RG #50 and RT #76

There too you see a bit of awareness from JBB, who's got his head up and is checking the LB, then pops out on him when he scrapes outside.

The right side of the line was reminiscent of last year during the mauling phase. I don't know exactly what PFF's seeing but I'm very surprised that they rated the tight ends higher than Michigan's right side after this game. The TEs had some moments good and bad; I thought Onwenu and Bushell-Beatty were excellent on the ground. The passing game probably doesn't make up for that gap since there was hardly any pass blocking (and I had no protection minuses for either guy) while McKeon and Gentry had just three simple catches between them. YMMV.

On the other hand they were gonzo about Chris Evans.

That I get. Evans gave a couple of guys The Business, most spectacularly on his 27-yard touchdown, where he's able to dust an unblocked safety who started at eight yards:

He had two more guys flail uselessly at him a bit later:

If Michigan can get Evans to the second level or into space he will do this stuff more often than not. Dink and dunk with this dude.

Higdon's 67 yarder was maybe his easiest run of the day but the ability to outrun that safety angle should further put to rest questions about his long speed. The 43-yard chunk was another matter, as he ran through an arm tackle and dusted a safety before the necessity to zig-zag allowed various Broncos to catch up. He also displayed his ability to bounce off tackles:

MAKE PLAYS, this space says all the time. Plays were made.

I had only one complaint in this department and it was the same one for both RBs. I thought both guys had opportunities to cut up when WMU successfully held the edge on a couple of pin and pulls. On both WMU gets guys outside of the two pullers quickly but leaves a lane just inside them that is at least a decent gain on. Higdon even seemed to sense his, slowing up and lookin' at the dang thing:

Alas, he then continued outside for a couple steps and spurned the opportunity. Evans's lane was less obvious but there:

I'm sure that'll be an area they get coached up in this week; I bet we see some more pin and pulls against SMU as they try to test their improvement in this department.

Other than that they were very good.

the guy who can't modulate his voice?

Ben Mason. Woo! Let's get out that +3:

That is a blowout block that catches another player in its wake. Mason's other major contribution was collapsing the first man through on a fourth and one Michigan barely converted:

Not bad for twelve snaps. I'm not saying I want to see more Mason because Michigan has a lot of options when it comes to blocky catchy sorts but I have confidence that Mason snaps will be a good time.

Did you have any further tactical complaints?

I mean, no. The down G stuff is a good addition but it's nothing mindblowing, and with Michigan jumping out to a big lead just running plays it would have been dumb to put anything else new on tape. There were a couple of wrinkles, albeit ones more in the "we need to be able to do this to have a functional offense that isn't predictable" mode.

One was a bonafide zone read that played on a couple of earlier split zones. Michigan got a chunk play on split zone when they caught a scrape exchange, which led to a second play where that guy buried himself in the line. So on a third split zone when that happened again a Patterson pull was easy yardage.

This was an improvement from the past week and earlier in the game. Michigan lets the backside end go here; he crashes hard but Patterson doesn't pull. The end result is a meh gain on a play that otherwise had a shot at getting to the secondary:

I understand that Michigan doesn't want to expose Patterson to hits but if that's not a real read that's asking for the above to happen. If Michigan wants DEs to shuffle they're going to have to give Patterson the green light or Patterson's going to have to read it better. Against real opponents he should be getting a few carries a game to keep folks honest.

No drops from my POV. Incompletions that Martin and Perry got hands to were 1) very far behind a guy on a drag and 2) high and hard and un-spearable with one hand and got filed as potential circus catches. I gave Martin's sideline catch a 1.

The Real Reason for the ‘Anti-Semite’ Campaign Against Jeremy Corbyn      Cache   Translate Page
Panic drives the smear attack against Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn whose background as a radical socialist, not his criticism of Israel and support for the Palestine, threatens the British establishment’s hold on power, argues Alexander Mercouris.
By Alexander Mercouris
in London
Special to Consortium News
<img class=”alignleft wp-image-27578″ src=”×150.jpg” alt=”” width=”90″ height=”90″ />Any discussion of the current “anti-Semitism crisis” in the British Labour Party needs to start with an understanding that there is no “anti-semitism crisis” in the British Labour Party, or in Britain.
Anti-Semitism did once have a place in British society. By way of example, readers of Agatha Christie stories written before World War II will come across stock anti-Semitic representations of Jewish characters. As recently as the 1970s, I can remember what would today be considered Semitic stereotypes being commonly used to represent Jewish people in many of the unfunny comedy shows broadcast by British television in that period, including some the BBC broadcast.
Racist stereotyping of this sort was commonplace in Britain right up to the 1970s, and was certainly not exclusive to Jews, as Irish people, black people and people from the Indian subcontinent well recall. Some still persists today, but by and large racial stereotyping is socially unacceptable, except (worryingly) with respect to Russians.
By comparison with other European countries, anti-Semitism in Britain has, however, not been a major phenomenon in modern British society and recent British history. There has been no official persecution of Jews in Britain since they were allowed to resettle in England by Oliver Cromwell in the 1650s, while the attempt by Oswald Moseley’s British Union of Fascists to stir up political anti-Semitism in the 1930s provoked fierce resistance.
Jewish people now play a full and active role in British life, and this happens without notice or comment.
As for the formal institutions of Britain’s Jewish community, these form an integral part of British life. The chief rabbi has enjoyed a measure of recognition as the nominal leader of the British Jewish community from the British state ever since the 1870s.  Since the 1980s, by convention, the chief rabbi has been admitted to the British Parliament as a peer of the House of Lords, though the present chief rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, has not yet been so admitted. The British Jewish community’s major institution—the Board of Deputies of British Jews—has had a continuous existence since the 1760s.
Though there are anti-Semites in Britain as there are everywhere else, they are very much a minor and ugly fringe, and moreover a generally despised and disliked one, with no influence or traction in British politics or in British life.
Despite lurid claims to the contrary, actual cases of anti-Semitic violence and property damage in Britain are relatively few, and certainly appear to be less than other types of racial violence.
Indeed, Jewish people today are so much an integral part of British society and of British life that I for one question whether it is even accurate to speak of a distinct “Jewish establishment” among British Jews. Rather, it seems to me that it would be more accurate to say that there are some prominent British Jews and some prominent British Jewish institutions—such as the chief rabbi and the Board of Deputies of British Jews—which today form an integral part of the larger British establishment, whose general perspectives and interests they share.
Which brings me to the present “anti-Semitism” campaign against Jeremy Corbyn.
The Left-Wing, Anti-Imperialist Labour Tradition
The British Labour Party was formed in 1900 before World War I, and if there has been one political movement in Britain that has stood rock solid against all manifestations of anti-Semitism in British life (perhaps more than any other group), it is the British Labour Party, and first and foremost its left wing.
This is consistent with the traditional stance of the left wing of the British Labour Party, which can be broadly defined as anti-racist, anti-fascist, and, above all, anti-imperialist. The latter has been important in a country like Britain—historically the preeminent imperialist power—where imperialism was justified in racist terms. British left-wing anti-imperialists, who are mostly drawn from the working class (a fact which gave British anti-imperialism a strong class-conflict character) strongly were predisposed to be anti-racist.
Not surprisingly, British Labour left-wing anti-racism extended to staunch opposition to anti-Semitism, which is, of course, the reason why so many British Jews were drawn to the Labour Party in the first place.
The key point to understand about Corbyn is that it is from within this left-wing, anti-imperialist Labour tradition that he comes. His parents after all first met each other in the 1930s attending a rally in support of the Spanish Republic at the time of the Spanish Civil War. He has been loyal to the traditions of the Labour Party’s anti-imperialist left ever since he began his career in politics, as his long record of opposition to all the West’s interventionist wars shows. Needless to say, that includes strong and consistent anti-racism and the opposition to anti-Semitism which goes with it. Strikingly, Corbyn’s acceptance speech following his election as Labour leader included a declaration of support for refugees.
To insinuate that Corbyn is an anti-Semite—as is increasingly happening—and to insinuate that the left wing of the Labour Party to which he belongs is riddled with anti-Semitism and poses an “existential threat to British Jews” (as several of the British Jewish community’s newspapers have alleged) is more than just absurd. It stands reality on its head. Corbyn is not an anti-Semite. Anti-Semitism, on the contrary, is what he always has defined himself against, and to claim otherwise is dishonest and even surreal.
Corbyn’s well-known support for the Palestinian people’s struggle does not contradict his opposition to anti-Semitism. Rather, it is the product of his consistent anti-imperialism, making Corbyn’s support for the Palestinians and his opposition to anti-Semitism consistent.
All this is well understood by those who are conducting the anti-Semitism campaign against Corbyn within the Labour Party and outside it. Corbyn has been a fixture of British political life ever since he was first elected a member of Parliament in 1983. The British establishment—including those members of the British establishment who are Jewish—know him well, and they know well what his actual beliefs are. It is not credible that they believe him to be an anti-Semite, or that they think that the left wing of the British Labour Party, which supports him, is riddled with anti-Semitism.
The Push to Stop Corbyn
The essential mendacity of the whole anti-Semitism campaign and the true motives behind it is shown by the exceptionally narrow frame of reference in which it is being conducted. It is universally acknowledged that the allegations of anti-Semitism being made against Corbyn and some of his supporters stem from Corbyn’s longstanding support for the Palestinian people’s struggle and his equally longstanding criticisms of Israel’s response to that struggle. As’ad AbuKhalil has discussed this aspect of the affair for Consortium News with great thoroughness and detail.
It is worth pointing out, however, that the criticisms being made against Corbyn barely touch on the Palestinian question at all. Anyone looking at these criticisms for a discussion of the Palestinian issue, even one from a position sympathetic to Israel and hostile to the Palestinians, will fail to find it.
The Palestinian struggle, the plight of the Palestinian people, the whole history of the Arab-Israeli conflict and the current policies both of Israel and of the Western governments which support it, are barely mentioned. When Palestinians do get mentioned at all, it is purely as terrorists. The entire campaign is being conducted as if Corbyn and those who support him hate Zionism and Israel and therefore allJews.
It is, of course, impossible that those who are conducting the campaign against Corbyn are any more ignorant of the basic facts of the Palestinian struggle and of the Arab-Israeli conflict than they are ignorant of Corbyn’s actual beliefs. If they are not mentioning these facts, it is not because they are ignorant of them. It is because they choose not to mention them.
Corbyn’s background as a radical socialist makes him a threat to the British establishment’s power. (Chatham House / Wikimedia)
In other words, the campaign against Corbyn has very little to do with the situation in the Middle East. I say this, though I have no doubt that the Israeli embassy is playing an active role in the campaign, a fact which is apparently freely admitted within Israel itself, though not in Britain.
However, it is a mistake to see the campaign against Corbyn as principally Israeli inspired. If it were, I would expect those conducting it to say far more about the situation in the Middle East than they do. Nor, in my opinion, is the campaign exclusively or even primarily the work of British Jews. As it happens, the Jewish community in Britain is far from united behind the campaign, with many British Jews expressing doubts or even outright opposition to it.
Instead, the campaign should be seen for what it is: the latest in a long series of attacks by the British establishment against Corbyn, the one British politician who more than any other embodies the threat to the current status quo and to the British establishment’s hold on power.
These attacks have at various times sought to portray Corbyn as a Communist, a Russian agent, a terrorist sympathizer and a traitor. Adding a charge of anti-Semitism to this catalogue is an obvious further step, and given Corbyn’s well-known advocacy of Palestinian rights an easy one. The only surprise is that it has not happened before.
That the anti-Semitism campaign is the latest in a long series of establishment attacks on Corbyn, which extend all the way back to his election as Labour’s leader, is shown by the sheer breadth of the campaign. The parliamentary Labour Party, the entire Conservative Party and the media (including the BBC and the supposedly left-wing Guardian newspaper) have all embraced it. Certainly, it extends far beyond those members of Britain’s Jewish community who form part of the greater British establishment and who initially spearheaded it. As it happens, the great majority of British politicians and commentators who have joined in the campaign are non-Jews.
A New Political Dynamic
As for the campaign’s greater vehemence by comparison with earlier campaigns, that is the product of the changed political dynamic in Britain since the June 2017 general election.
Before that election, the British establishment did not take Corbyn seriously, since it assumed that the British electorate would reject him in any election which he fought. The horrifying realization following the June 2017 election that the opposite is the case has—not surprisingly—caused panic and has led to the establishment pulling out all the stops. That explains not just the greater vehemence of this campaign but why it has persisted for so long.
In other words, what is driving the campaign is not some overarching loyalty on the part of British Jews to Israel or a belief that Corbyn is an anti-Semite. Rather, it is British establishment panic. As Britain’s Conservative government disintegrates, Corbyn stands poised to become Britain’s next prime minister. That terrifying prospect—of a radical socialist in 10, Downing Street—is one which must be averted at all costs. That is the reason for the anti-Semitism campaign we have been witnessing, and thus all the other campaigns against Corbyn we have witnessed, of which there are certainly more to come.
While the causes of the anti-Semitism campaign are mainly domestic, there is a wide consensus among Corbyn’s supporters that he has not handled his response to the campaign well. The general opinion—that he has been far too accommodating to his critics—has been forcefully argued in Consortium News by Jonathan Cook.
Corbyn himself has conceded too much ground on anti-semitism. As a lifelong anti-racism campaigner, the accusations of anti-semitism have clearly pained him. He has tried to placate rather than defy the smearers. He has tried to maintain unity with people who have no interest in finding common ground with him.
And as he has lost all sense of how to respond in good faith to allegations made in bad faith, he has begun committing the cardinal sin of sounding and looking evasive – just as those who deployed the anti-semitism charge hoped. It was his honesty, plain-speaking and compassion that won him the leadership and the love of ordinary members. Unless he can regain the political and spiritual confidence that underpinned those qualities, he risks haemorrhaging support.
This widespread view that Corbyn has been accommodating to people who seek only his destruction has even produced some curious examples of drafts of “speeches” written for him by some of his sympathizers setting out the sort of things which they think he should say.
While I have considerable sympathy for this view, I think it is only fair to add that Corbyn happens to be one of the most polite and diffident personalities in British politics. The contrast with, say, Donald Trump in the United States, could not be greater. It is not in Corbyn’s nature to respond to his critics with the same forcefulness that they extend to him. While this makes Corbyn an indifferent orator and blunts his impact in debates in the House of Commons, his politeness and diffidence is an integral part of his appeal. To call on him to act differently is to call for a different man, with no guarantee that that man would command anything remotely approaching the level of support that Corbyn has.
Is the Campaign Working?
It is important to stress this point because as of the time of writing it is far from clear to me that—contrary to what Jonathan Cook fears—this latest campaign against Corbyn is succeeding.
The poll numbers barely have shifted, with Conservative and Labour both polling around 40 percent of the vote since the June 2017 general election, and most opinion polls put Labour ahead. Though the anti-Semitism campaign may have lost Labour some Jewish votes in places like the London district of Barnet, the generality of the British voters seem indifferent and unimpressed by the whole affair.
I suspect that the truth is that Corbyn has been around in British politics for so long that the British electorate long ago formed its view of him. Knowing Corbyn as well as they do—as well as the left-wing tradition from which he comes—the vast majority of British center-left voters who make up Corbyn’s electoral base find the whole idea that he is an anti-Semite just too fantastic to take seriously. Besides the fact that the anti-Semitism campaign is merely the latest in a series of campaigns against Corbyn launched from the moment he became Labour’s leader makes the true motives of his critics in the end altogether too obvious.
The Nuremberg trials, circa 1945-46. (National Archives)
Cook has expressed the fear that if the Labour Party adopts the four additional working examples of anti-Semitism drafted by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA)—which it has hitherto resisted doing because of the way they limit criticism of Israel—that will make future criticism of Israel by Corbyn and by other members of the Labour Party all but impossible, and will open the way to a purge of Palestinian sympathizers within the Labour Party. [Editor’s note: The Labour Party altered its anti-Semitism definition on Sept. 4 at its National Executive Committee meeting and adopted the four additional working examples of anti-Semitism drafted by the IHRA.]
Similar concerns have been expressed by Norman Finkelstein, who sees the whole attempt to impose any sort of definition of anti-Semitism on the Labour Party as an attack on the party’s traditions and on free speech.
These concerns are far from groundless. On the contrary, there is no doubt that silencing criticism of Israel is very much a part of the agenda of some of the people behind the campaign, with the British establishment (not just its Jewish part) united in support of Israel in the same way as are the political establishments of all the other Western countries. Consider, for example, this extraordinary article by Andrew Feldmanin The Evening Standard, a newspaper edited by former Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron’s friend and former Chancellor George Osborne, which contains this passage:
Anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism are the same thing. They are two sides of the same coin. Anti-Zionism is the belief that the state of Israel should not exist. That it should be dismantled. This is not the same as saying, quite legitimately, that you disagree with the policies of the current or any other Israeli government; or calling for the reversal of the settlement programme in the West Bank; or demanding a return to earlier borders and the creation of a two-state solution.
Some historical context is important here. Two thousand years ago, at the end of a long and bloody revolt, the Temple was destroyed and the Jewish people were dispersed far and wide, across the Roman Empire and beyond. They settled in many places. Some made them welcome for a time. Others less so. Jewish people lived in a constant state of trepidation. Periods of peace and prosperity punctuated by pogroms, inquisition and expulsion.
In Europe, the Holocaust was the crescendo of centuries of rumbling antipathy. Jews sought to escape the horror but the numbers who found refuge were pathetically small. Even the UK only accepted 70,000 Jewish refugees before the Second World War and 10,000 during it.
Quite simply, there was nowhere for them to go, so six million people perished out of a total global Jewish population of 17 million.
Finally, after this destruction, the world decided that enough was enough. The Jewish people needed their own place to go when things went wrong. And the ancient homeland was chosen. It was to be shared with the Palestinians on lines established by a United Nations resolution in 1948.
This was not the only work for the cartographers after the Second World War. The demise of empire, the calls for national determination and the need for pragmatic solutions brought about the creation of new states in Europe, Africa, the Indian subcontinent and elsewhere in the Middle East. Lines were drawn on maps. Sometimes they respected geographical, religious and tribal boundaries; sometimes they did not. Everyone was doing the best they could to make sense of the cataclysmic events of the previous decades.
The State of Israel served its purpose. A national homeland for the Jewish people existing alongside the Jewish communities that continued to live around the world. And when things did not go well for some of those communities — in Russia, Iraq, Morocco and elsewhere — it was a place of sanctuary. It accepted refugees in huge numbers without question.
Note that the Palestinians are barely mentioned in the whole article, which claims that anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism and does so by linking anti-Zionism to the whole history of anti-Semitism in the West, culminating in the Nazis and the Holocaust.
Needless to say, though Feldman appears to admit that it is legitimate to criticize Israel, he makes no criticisms of Israel anywhere in his article. In practice, on the basis of his article, it is difficult to imagine what criticism of Israeli policy toward the Palestinians Feldman would not define as anti-Semitic.
Having said this, it is important to retain perspective. Even though the Labour Party changed its anti-Semitism definition, that will not end criticism of Israel within the Labour Party or in British society. Corbyn himself will not change his views, nor will other supporters of the Palestinian struggle within the Labour Party or in British society.
Ultimately, what is causing the growing criticism of Israel in Britain as elsewhere are Israeli policies, and attempts to silence criticism of those policies by conjuring up the specter of anti-Semitism or by resorting to purges and inquisitions that can only, in the end, threaten to provoke a backlash.
How the Anti-Corbyn Campaign Is Like Russia-gate
The anti-Semitism campaign against Corbyn in Britain bears more than a passing resemblance to the Russia-gate scandal in the United States.
Controversial BBC graphic seeking to link Corbyn to Russia. (BBC)
In both countries, the establishment has been shocked by popular insurgencies on the right and left and the rise of a seeming outsider: Corbyn in Britain, and Trump (with far less cause) in the U.S. In both countries, this has provoked a shrill establishment campaign against the outsider. In both countries, the allegations which form the basis of the campaign—of anti-Semitism in the case of Corbyn, of being an agent of the Russians in the case of Trump—are to anyone with even a basic grasp of reality utterly fantastic. In neither country does the sheer absurdity of the allegations seem to matter for those who have invested in the campaign. Instead, the political class in both countries pretends to believe them, while the media has embraced them. A media effort has been made to link Corbyn to Russia too.
In both countries, interested outside powers are involved in the campaigns— Israel in the case of the anti-Semitism campaign against Corbyn in Britain, Britain and some other U.S. European allies in the Russia-gate scandal against Trump in the U.S. But the origins of both campaigns are domestic.
In both Britain and the U.S., the core electoral base of both Corbyn and Trump remains unmoved by the hysteria and the swirl of allegations, but in the meantime, real damage to the political system is being done. Both countries are unable to formulate rational foreign policies, whether with respect to the situation in the Middle East in the case of Britain, or with respect to relations with Russia in the case of the U.S.
Corbyn and the movement he leads have far deeper roots within British society than Trump does in the U.S. There has been a continuous tradition of political radicalism in Britain going back to the period of the French Revolution. Corbyn stands squarely within that tradition, a fact which is perhaps better understood in Britain than it is outside it. That tradition for the moment is rising in the case of younger Britains.
That, of course, is why, against all expectations, Corbyn, was elected leader of the Labour Party, and why, again contrary to all expectations, he increased the Labour’s share of the vote so dramatically in the June 2017 general election.
That is reason for the intensity of the campaign against him, but it also explains why he has been able to withstand it up to now. The shape of British politics in the future will be determined by whether or not he is able to continue  to do so.

Hi all,

So I was wondering if there are different versions of this game? I noticed here on BGG, there is only the one from 2017, but is there a re-print or something that is coming out soon?

I only ask because I am looking on Amazon to pick up a copy, and I found two different box art versions, for different prices. I'd like to make sure there isnt any different between the two. The upcoming expansion appears to be done in the same art as the first link (same as here on BGG).

Box art w/ yellow lettering (looks like the one here on BGG):

Box art w/ brown lettering:

I did a little digging and cant seem to find if there is a difference. Perhaps this is a new edition, with updated artwork? But if so, why would the expansion be coming out with the old artwork style? Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance, and sorry if I'm missing something obvious here.

Goddammit, Michael S. Your Pan Looks Like Shit      Cache   Translate Page
by Katie Herzog

If you read this morning's inaugural Slog AM post by newly minted Slog AM intern Michael Bell, you might have noticed something disgusting:

I have no problem with pancakes (yay gluten) but the filthy pan and the bacon within it belong to Slog AM reader Michael S. (no relation). I reached out to Michael S. to ask if he's aware of the proper method of cleaning cast iron, and he told me that, despite apparences, his bacon pan isn't actually cast iron but is a ceramic-coated pan from Target, and it's not filthy, it's just scratched to shit.

My plan to nonconsenually lecture Michael S. on the proper way to clean cast iron was foiled, but, never one to let an opportunity to be a know-it-all pass me by, I did a little digging and found out that whatever Michael is doing in the kitchen is the number one worst thing you can possibly do to a ceramic-coated pan: He's scratching it. This isn't as much of a big deal as it would be if the pan were Teflon or non-stick—scratching those bad boys release harmful chemicals and make your balls shrink and could kill you—but according to Simon, the friendly guy who answered the phone at Sur La Table Seattle, it's still not good for it, which is why Michael S. should put down the fork and pick up the bamboo spatula.

Michael has no plans—yet—to replace his ceramic pan with cast iron, but, Michael, when you are ready to make the leap, just fucking wash it. Plenty of real cooks will tell you that soap will damage your cast iron and you should use kosher salt and potatoes or some bullshit, but don't fucking listen. It's cast iron. It's not going to break. Just wash the thing and keep it plenty well-seasoned. You're welcome.

ABC reports:

One of President Donald Trump’s staunchest allies in Congress, Rep. Mark Meadows, a North Carolina Republican, is doubling down on a disputed theory that the FBI condoned leaks to the news media in a coordinated effort to take down the president.

On Monday, Meadows sent a letter to the Justice Department and posted it publicly online, saying newly-released text messages between former FBI agent Peter Strzok and then-FBI attorney Lisa Page raise “grave concerns regarding an apparent systemic culture of media leaking” within the senior ranks of the FBI and Justice Department.

Hours later, on Tuesday morning, Trump tweeted that the supposed revelation is “so terrible.”

But in a statement later Tuesday, Strzok’s attorney insisted the text messages reflect an effort to stop media leaks – not promote them – and a review of Justice Department actions at the time supports the attorney’s claims.

This is the Bizarroworld scandal of the day and it's one of the dumbest.

If you feel like digging more deeply into the details on this, Emptywheel laid it all out in a piece she called THE FROTHY RIGHT IS FURIOUS THAT PETER STRZOK PURSUED THE GUY LEAKING ABOUT CARTER PAGE.

That's right. Strzok was trying to stop leaks about Trump hero Carter Page. You know, the guy who has allegedly been unfairly targeted with a FISA warrant which they erroneously claim was filed on the basis of the nefarious Steele dossier.

They don't even try to make sense. After all, they don't need to. The people who believe this drivel, starting with the president of the United States, will believe anything.

During our Great American West road trip last month, my daughter and I passed through charming Fort Collins, Colorado, and visited The Gardens on Spring Creek, the city’s community-oriented botanic garden. The entry garden was ablaze with late-summer flowers like purple coneflower, rudbeckia, and cleome. Pink cleome stood almost as tall as me. A closeup view Purple coneflowers have been done for months in my Austin garden, but here they were in full party mode. This is one of my favorite flowers. This combo is eye-catching too: ‘Strawberry Fields’ gomphrena, purple verbena, some sort of white daisy, and a copper-colored grass or sedge. Ka-pow! Red gomphrena pompoms with red zinnias, set off by more of that copper grass — love! At the entrance to the Children’s Garden, a gigantic watering can overflows with white frothy flowers and silvery foliage. From its spout pours a stream of morning glory vine, which seems to ripple outward via circles of purple and white annuals. Just as we were about to enter the garden, I looked up and spotted a familiar face, Lauren Springer Ogden, garden designer extraordinaire, plantswoman, author, and recent speaker for my Garden Spark series. by Wm. Steven Humphrey

Good news: The Portland Mercury is hiring! We’re looking to add a full-time reporter to our award-winning staff—known locally for smart, deep, and accessible journalism. And we want someone with hustle and an unflinching drive to make a meaningful difference in our community. (PSSST! Just heard about this? We've extended the deadline, which is now this FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14. You're welcome, and tell your friends.)

Qualified applicants must possess the following:

• A substantial body of professional work published within the past three years.
• Snappy, smart writing chops paired with a passion for long-form storytelling and a dedication to accuracy. Show us your well-cultivated voice.
• A demonstrated ability to devise and execute unique, high-quality story ideas—with little to no handholding—in an extremely competitive news market.
• Experience requesting and digging through public records in pursuit of scoops or must-read context.
• Flexibility. Be able to jump from the courthouse to city hall to a protest to wherever else you're needed. It’s a busy city.
• An easy, active relationship with social media.
• A thriving cultural life outside of work… and, seriously, a sense of humor.
• We’ll like you even more if you can take a good picture or build an amazing spreadsheet or infographic.
• We especially encourage people of color and women to apply!

Again, this is a full-time position—with competitive salary and benefits—in a profitable and stable company. Evening and weekend hours aren’t the norm, but they’re also not unheard of.

Interested applicants should send us a résumé, the best cover letter known to humankind, links/PDFs to at least three pieces, and four story ideas.

Email everything to Snail mail won’t be accepted. Sorry!

New deadline for applications: Friday, September 14.
We are an equal opportunity employer.

QUESTION:  What if you only made work that YOU loved, and you were certain that you would be paid top dollar if you did…Would you do it?  Of course! Most sane creators / entrepreneurs would jump at the opportunity – and such is the topic of Srinivas Rao’s new book: An Audience of One: Reclaiming Creativity For Its Own Sake.  The problem is, so many of us are watering down our work making it for someone else. In fact, the path to our best work is digging deeper into who you’re creating for and what happens when you create art for yourself. In this episode we also cover… “If you’re going to take the time to learn to use a tool, take the time to make something with that tool…”  This is a fascinating POV I’d never heard before, but it keeps us creators in the building mode vs the procrastinating mode. How to take your art+career+future into your own hands…  Srini’s view is that we must put our focus and effort into the things that you can control. You can’t control follower count, you can’t control Facebook’s algorithms. You can control your creative process. If you focus on the process, you’ll […]

Re: Fans' Passion For Waluigi's Smash Exclusion Is "Fantastic", Says Nintendo's Andrew Collins      Cache   Translate Page

My favourite Mario reps for Smash:

1. Pauline (I'm surprised she is not a fighter, but I guess it's Daisy's turn now)
2. Toad/Toadette (with Captain Toad/Captain Toadette costume)
3. Waluigi

Yes, I pick Waluigi third, even though I had Shy Guy on that spot for the longest time. It's not because of the games, but because of the fans. Digging into the topic I saw plenty of Waluigi fans being funny and very dedicated, not angry or toxic. I know people that love and play Waluigi on every Mario Kart, Mario Party, and Mario Sports game. He's kind of an outcast, and that's one of the appealing parts about him.

Maybe I have to put Shy Guy #4 (and Kamek #5) towards Yoshi characters and not Mario characters anyway.

Marrying An Older Man And The Guilt Of Gold Digging      Cache   Translate Page

A number of cliché quotes point to the irrelevance of age in the context of love and relationships: “Love is blind”, “Age is just a number”. In reality, the issue of age, though muted in modernized settings, still holds importance. I was at a social gathering with a few friends recently, (but bear in mind, [...]

Lehighton's Sesquicentennial: The Pioneers and the Promise      Cache   Translate Page
Although this is Lehighton’s 150th year as a borough, its original founding reaches back to 1746.

Currently, a group of dedicated individuals is wrapping up several years of work to showcase the essence of Lehighton: a trolley tour, a talent show, a cemetery walk, revival of the Brothers of the Brush and Sister of the Swish, etc.

There will be all kinds of contests such as corn on the cob eating, trivia night, and the Coaster Races.  The Coaster Races are said to have originated in Lehighton in 1923 and have been revived from time to time over the years.  (See pictures of the 1950 & 1951 races at the end of this article.)
The Leuckel Building, most recently known as "White's Trading," in the 1980s it was Rea and Derrick Drugs seen here around 1942 with the opening of the Windsor Clothing Store.  There for the promotional first night was the then Lehighton Boys Band, roughly 40 years before they changed to the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band.  The Leuckel Building was completed in 1899 by Frederick and John Leuckel and once housed the post office and two banks.  The expressions on the faces of the citizens in their hats and band members in their capes as well as  the young girl looking down from the window gives this photo a classic Americana feel.  This never before published photo appears here courtesy of Paula Kistler Ewaniuk, a descendant of the T.D. Clauss and Mahlon Kistler, both key Lehighton businessmen from the glory days of Lehighton's downtown.

There will be an opening ceremony of the burying of men’s razors and women’s makeup as well as the uncovering of them on the last day.  The park will have music each night with it all culminating with a fireworks display that will be seen from anywhere in Lehighton.

It could be easy to develop a romanticized version of life in those days.  Often times the “good old days” are remembered as blissful times without strife.

Lehighton’s early days had a “wild west” mystique.  There were saloons and cigar shops, and unsolved murders in our muddy streets.  We had constables, horse thieves, and posses, but we had no jail.  Once in 1870, a trio of banks robbers was caught here and was held captive in Mantz’s Hotel over night (see 1940s picture of First St below for the Mantz Hotel).

Constable John Weston formed a posse and cornered the desperate outlaws amid a fierce February snowstorm.  The outlaws had swum the icy Lehigh to a hiding place in the woods across the river.  This robbery also led to an unsolved murder of an unidentified man here in town over thirty years later (See footnotes for more).

Another story tells how the southern end of town was quarantined and several citizens died due to smallpox that Lehighton silk mill owner and town benefactor Eugene Baer accidentally brought to town from New Jersey in 1902.  (See footnotes for more & click here for more on Baer's Mill and family.)

You name it, we had it: Rowdy council meetings with political backbiting, scandalous behavior at the fair including illegal gambling and drinking, as well as fraud and other crimes of all sorts, from the salacious sort to the comical and accidental.

Two men who clashed in the 1890s were Burgess (mayor) Benjamin J. Kuntz and newspaperman George W. Morthimer.  Kuntz, who succeeded Dan Olewine at his Seventh and Bridge Sts tannery, summoned Chief of Police Raworth to town council meeting to “settle down the rowdies.”

The Lehighton Press of North First Street - David McCormick, son of locally famous Civil War veteran William Carpenter
McCormick in the press room with his longtime pressman Harry Miner.  The two women are likely other longtime employees typist Alice Heintzleman and McCormick's sister, columnists Mary (McCormick) Ray.   This picture and other valuable McCormick family primary sources provided by Bill and Kathy White of Lehighton.
Morthimer was a member at that council and among other things, didn’t appreciate Kuntz’s allegations.  However Morthimer’s power of the press (the “Fourth Estate” as they say) led to Kuntz’s undoing.  Kuntz was mayor in 1879 and later again from 1891-92.  However, his fourth run (as mayors seemed to serve only one year terms in those days) as mayor ended in November 1892 amid attacks from Morthimer’s “Carbon Advocate.”

Morthimer later served as mayor from 1903 to 1913.  McCormick served from 1918 to 1921.  By this time, it seems like the three-year terms had begun.

A March 1890 snipett in the Carbon Advocate announced B.J. Kuntz as "big, tall, tanner and Republican politician was a familiar figure on our streets on Wednesday."  Morthimer was a Democrat.  One of Morthimer's complaints about Kuntz was that not until after he lost the election did he complain about the illegal gambling at the fair grounds.

As of June 1910 Lehighton had three newspapers.

By 1902, Morthimer sold his "Carbon Advocate" to Attorney Philip M. Graul.  One long-time employee of Graul was future Lehighton mayor William F. Hummel (1942 to 1953).  But Morthimer would continue a South First St paper under the name of Lehighton’s “Evening Leader."  His other competitor, David McCormick, ran the weekly “Lehighton Press” on North First.  Both of these men were themselves involved in public office.  (See footnotes for more on Morthimer and McCormick).

Graul's weekly "Carbon Advocate" raised its rate from $1.00 to $1.50 for its annual subscription.  This was announced in February 1917, taking effect for 1918.  Gaul was the first in the county to raise the rate, thought the other county papers soon followed.  The Advocate burned in the early 1920s.  Graul was appointed postmaster when President Wilson took office in 1913.

George Williams Morthimer as
he appears in Brenckman's Carbon History of 1913
Morthimer ran the Lehighton Evening Leader.
Born 1866 - Died 1918.  Buried in the Lehighton
The Carbon Advocate had some advice for improving our town back in 1890: “Consider…Electric illumination, widening of the thoroughfares leading from Fourth St to the Fair Grounds, and from Alum Street to Kuntz’s tannery, a town hall and hose house and the beautifying of the two Parks.  Cut this out and paste it in your hats.”

After several months of pleas using such phrases as "let there be light" and trying to shame the town for still using coal-oil because Lansford, Mauch Chunk, and Weatherly already had electiric street lights, The Carbon Advocate was pleased to announce in June 1891 that the town had secured a contract with the electric company to "illuminate the town."

Lehighton was of course founded by the Moravian settlers on the banks of the Mahoning Creek in 1746.  It was part of what was known as the Moravian “Economy,” various industrious pursuits to make money for the mother organization to further its missionary work among the Indians.

This letterhead among the papers discovered inside Guy Morthimer's copy of
Brenckman's Carbon County History from 1913.  G. W. (George Williams) Morthimer took over the Carbon
Advocate from his father Harry V. Morthimer.  And in turn Guy Morthimer took full control of the Leader
when his father passed in 1918.
Lehighton was just one town of the many founded by the Moravians.  Bethlehem and Nazareth were their first two settlements in the area as well as Emmaus in 1759.  The Moravians also made settlements elsewhere, as far away as Georgia.

Lehighton was formed as an important stepping stone to the harder to reach native groups of the Wyoming and Susquehanna valleys.  They lived in peace here but many colonial leaders had viewed these missionaries with at least some suspicion and perhaps a bit of contempt.

As the French and Indian War approached, laws were passed in New York barring Christians from spending the night among the native groups.  This was aimed at the French Jesuit priests who lived among and ministered to the Indian souls they were trying to win over.  Many felt the Moravians were simply French Catholics in disguise and were trying to infiltrate the English speaking lands

Fear of Indians led to an overall distrust of anyone who aided the natives.  The Lehigh Valley then became a refuge for these exiled New York Moravians and their Indian cohorts when they were forced out of New York.

Another sticking point came from the Moravian blacksmiths.  Though it was colonial policy not to provide the Indians with firearms, the Gnadenhutten blacksmiths were eager to help repair the flintlocks of any Indian who passed through here, and many did.

With British General Braddock’s western Pennsylvania defeat in July of 1755 came fear of further Indian reprisals would move eastward.

They of course were right.  Attacks were made on many area settlements, but the peace and good relations the Moravians established here made them feel impervious to any hostility.  And as the story goes, on the evening of November 24th it all came to an end here.  Many of those attacked here had only been in this country for a few weeks.

Not all were killed.  One husband and wife became separated: she spent the night in the hollow of a tree and he ran to Bethlehem and back through the night, to get help.  They were reunited in the morning, each fearing the other had died.

And had the 16-year-old lad Joseph Sturgis not jumped from the burning attic and lived, we may not have the pretzel today.  He went to live at another Moravian settlement in Lititz and was a successful potter.

His grandson Julius Sturgis developed the first commercial pretzel bakery in the country.  (More of this including information of those lost and those who survived can be read here.)

Few people realize that one somewhat mysterious woman came to live on these grounds.  Here purpose was to venerate the martyred souls lost here.  Her name was Fredericka Misca.  (More of her can be read here: )

Jacob Weiss of course bought some of the Moravian lands on both sides of the river.  And another highly industrious man named William Henry partnered with him.  Henry learned the gunsmith trade in the Moravian settlement of Lititz before moving to Nazareth.  When the mission here faded, the Moravians found an eager buyer in Henry and Weiss.

The timing of this venture was enhanced with Josiah White’s successful launch of the coal trade, first on the river with his “bear trap locks” and later in 1828 with the Lehigh Canal, leaving the lands of Weiss and Henry open to the future promise of the industrial settlement of Lehighton.  (More on Josiah White can be found here.)

Speculative minds and hard working hands soon followed.

Of the first industries here were grist mills and leather tanning.  There was a mill sluice and run that ran parallel and along today’s Route 209 bypass, behind today’s Lehighton Hi-Rise.

Later Moses Heilman had a grist mill on the Mahoning Creek and a large dam behind what is today’s Boulevard Restaurant.  He also had a feed mill on First Street.  He last lived at the corner of Third and Alum Sts.

In 1915, the Burd brothers well-diggers found three human skulls near Heilman’s dam, which was just downstream from where Henry Graver would build his ice dam and pond.  The skulls were thought to be from the colonial days of the Moravians.  Some speculated these were Indian skulls.

However, another theory that should be considered would be those of the six men Ben Franklin hastily buried along the banks of the Lehigh when he came to build the fort in Weissport in January 1756.  About six colonial militiamen were lured into an attack on New Year’s Day that year.

Heilman was just one of many of our town’s “pioneer” residents.  Another was Lewis Graver, father of Henry, the patriarch of the many Graver enterprises here.  Lewis came to timber the Moravian lands as a youngster of twelve with his father and was an early boat builder with his brother Andrew.  They had a boatyard at the canal and were also leather tanners.
Here is a view from the Carbon House looking south on First St Lehighton around the 1940s.  You can see the Elk's
Building, destroyed by fire in 1934, is refurbished here with the A&P Store in residence.  Also, G.C. Murphy, Hotel Lehighton (now the Hi-Rise) and further down the "Mantz Building" with its ornate top (most recently Renee's Beauty Shop).

Lewis Graver’s son Henry later ran a brickworks, ice house, and skating rink.  He also built two of Pennsylvania’s largest cement swimming pools.  First here and another in Lebanon PA in the 1920s (Read more about this family here:).  Lewis also had two daughters with business sense.  Alvenia and Adaline were milliners in town (Read more here):

Eastern Pennsylvania, but especially northern Carbon County in the Pine Swamp and Hickory Run area, held plentiful reserves of hemlock pine trees.

Hemlock (and oak to a slightly lesser degree) bark was preferred for the tanning of hides into malleable leather because of its high tannic acid content.  So the fact that Lehighton had no less than two well-established tanneries should come as no surprise.

The first tannery in town is believed to be started by David Heller in the area behind First Street in 1820.  It was in the vicinity of where G.C. Murphy was operated a department store, across the narrow street of today’s Hi-Rise.

This tannery property was eventually developed into what was known as the “Linderman Block, so named for Asa Packer’s son-in-law, Dr. Garrett B. Linderman.

Dr. Linderman came to Mauch Chunk in the great cholera epidemic in 1854, falling in love with Packer’s daughter Lucy.  (Read more here: )

It is unclear whether Heller sold his interests directly to Stephen Kistler (no direct relation to Lehighton’s Daniel "Jacob" or "Jake" Kistler).  After Stephen left to develop his Tannersville properties, he left the Lehighton tannery in the hands of his brother William.  However one newspaper article mentioned a tanner and animal fertilizer business owned by a Benjamin J. Kistler (not to be confused with Lehighton tanner Benjamin J. Kuntz.)

Kistler came from Kistler Valley to start his first one of the four tanneries he would eventually own.  At his death, it was said that he was the wealthiest tanner in the state and perhaps the nation.

He lived and operated a larger one in Monroe County’s “Tannersville” as well as two in Susquehanna County.
Owen W. Snyder once owned this fine Victorian-era home on the corner of Second and Alum Sts.  Snyder was a horse surgeon born in the Kistler Valley, Lynnport in 1860.  He died of heart failure in 1922.  He and his wife Amanda did not have children, though they did raise her nephew Arnold Rusell (born 1912).  Snyder lived first in the Mansion House Hotel when he arrived here in the spring of 1887.  By 1890 he was living near Kistler's Livery at the Carbon House.  Since this is most likely Snyder and his nephew Arnold who looks to be as young as maybe 5 or so, this picture is probably taken around 1917 or so.  The house was later owned by widowed physician John Hammel, father of two well-known Hammels: William and Andrew.  Currently Gregory Duschak is refurbishing the home and it will be for sale.  (Picture courtesy of the Brad Haupt collection.)
Here is a modern view of the three Queen Anne sashes in the attic tower of the Snyder home, currently being refurbished by Gregory Duschak.

Owen W. Snyder lived in a handsome Victorian-era home on the corner of South Second and Alum Sts (currently being refurbished by Gregory Dsuchak).  He was a veterinarian surgeon, specializing in the many horses that kept Lehighton running in the early days.

Born in the Kistler Valley, he attended the "celebrated" Ontario Veterinary College.  Snyder made the papers frequently, known for his cure for tetanus in horses, he performed hernia operations, and removed tumors.  He was also always prepared to put a horse or cow down if he had to.  Dead animals were then taken to B.J. Kistler's animal fertilizer plant in Jamestown.

The gambling in town most definitely centered on the Fair's horse racing.  Purses of $100 or more were often touted in the papers.  Horses from places like Stroudsburg and Allentown would come here to race our local mares.  Snyder was known for always having the nicest, newest and fastest mares as the Carbon Advocate would often announce.  He and Jonathan Kistler were known to trade gray mares with each other as well as Snyder buying from horse trader Knaus and others in Allentown.

Snyder encountered a run of some paid luck starting in the fall of 1902.  In September, a half-drunk horse thief entered town and made off with one of Snyder's thoroughbreds and one owned by William Walters of town.  Unknowingly, the Rev G. G. Kunkle of Mauch Chunk accepted a ride from a "half-drunken" man who drove him from Packerton down the Mansion House hill.

Rev Kunkle said the man drove so recklessly that he tried several times to have the man stop and let him off.  However he drove the horse so hard and into the wall that the horse died.  Kunkle walked home, thinking little of it until he heard of the horse thefts.  The next morning the dead horse of the Mauch Chunk mountain road was found to be Snyder's valuable track horse.

It is believed the horse thief went back to Lehighton and then stole the Walters' horse.  That horse was found dead a few days after on the Blue Mountain.

Then in early June 1903, Snyder's stables were struck by lightning and two of his horses were killed.  It did not mention the specific location of these stables.  One article in 1893 implied he owned stables on Seventh St and was trying to get council to open up Alum Street through to his property there.  His stolen horse was valued at $750, a vast sum in those days.

Following Snyder in this home was Dr. John Hammel, father of Hammel's Store owner William Hammel.  William was a magician in the old vaudeville days before opening the store at First and Coal Sts.

His brother Andrew was a projectionist at theaters in town before opening Hammel's Gas Station near today's Mahoning Elementary school (the small white shed on the opposite side of the road was the station and is still there.)  He was also the projectionist at the Mahoning Valley Drive-in for years.

Lehighton the Borough was only six months old when the famous Dan Rice Circus came to town in June.  A one “mile-long” parade was sent down First St to try to lure townsfolk into the show at fifty-cents a head.

However, as one team of Rice’s horses approached the lower park, the team became “spooked,” supposedly due to the severe from Kistler’s tannery.

The team made a deadly trot toward one of Lehighton’s earliest hotels, the “Carbon House,” which sat on the corner of First and North Streets (below today’s library).  Some reports say it was a Mauch Chunk man, others that it was a man from the Mahoning Valley, who was killed (or so severely injured he wasn’t expected to live) trying to arrest the team.

(Read David Carlyon’s book “Dan Rice: The Most Famous Man You Never Heard of.”)  Rice was once considered for candidacy for president.

The Carbon House, from North and First Sts,

Another Lehighton tanner and pioneer resident was Daniel Olewine.  He and his wife Esther (Zoll) originated from Towamensing Township.  Olewine first journeyed to Mauch Chunk as a tanner.  But by 1856 he built his own enterprise at Seventh and Bridge Streets in Lehighton in 1856.

Today the former Penn Lace building stands where the tannery once operated.

Olewine was a founding president of First National Bank in Lehighton in 1875.  This bank was first housed in a portion of Joseph Obert’s First St residence in the 1880s.

The bank later became the Hazleton National Bank that opened for business in its once thoroughly modern stone-façade building.  Though now vacant, it is still an impressive downtown building that first opened in 1910.

Olewine’s tannery burned down in 1873.  At that point he retired to his spacious brick home next door that still stands at 600 Bridge St.  As mentioned earlier, the tannery was then rebuilt by B. J. Kuntz who operated it into the 1890s.

Daniel Olewine was father-in-law to two well known Lehighton residents: Chief clerk of the LVRR Car Dept Franklin Pierce Lentz (Clara Olewine) and William S. Koch (Susan Esther Olewine) of the well-known Koch farm in southwest Lehighton.
Isborn Koch and his brother William S. once ran a cigar
factory in downtown Lehighton.  Their partnership
dissolved in 1882.  I.S. continued on while W.S.
went full-time into farming.

William was just one of the first three Koch brothers to live in Lehighton, all sons of Daniel and Mary Ann Koch of Northampton County.  Besides, William there was Isborn S. and Milton.  Until 1882, Isborn and William were in the cigar manufacturing business together in downtown Lehighton.

Isborn continued in cigars while William furthered himself in his large 200-acre farm in the southwest corner of town.  (One of several unsolved Lehighton deaths was once solved by I.S. Koch, search this story for more on that).

A portion of this farm became the Small and Koch Dairy Farm with William’s son and son-in-law Reuben Koch running the dairy until the mid 1930s.  It later became Geurstlaurer’s and still operates today as Zimmerman’s Dairy.

From the horse drawn days of Small and Koch Dairy.  Originally started on William S. Koch's farm by his son William "Daniel" Koch  and son-in-law Reuben Small, they first called it Orchard Poultry and Truck Farm.  Reuben Small
arrived in the Lehigh Valley for business school and met and married 'the farmers' daughter' Esther Koch
in 1905.  Small and Koch operated the farm until the mid-Depression.  (Small & Koch photos are courtesy of Lois Small).
Reuben Small (left) and William "Daniel" Koch left in the early 1900s at the Small and Koch Dairy in the southwest corner of Lehighton.

Small and Koch Dairy was the first Carbon County dairy to pasteurize milk.  It was also the only diary of the over 268 in the county to receive a state department of health satisfactory rating in 1916.  (See footnotes for more on Reuben Small).

Lehighton was also home to two of the three Lentz brothers from Colonel John Lentz.  Col Lentz was a soldier in the War of 1812 and later, though advanced in age, led a defense of Harrisburg when Lee’s army advanced there in the summer of 1863.

One of these sons, Lafayette of Mauch Chunk, made a fortune in the coal fields.  Lentz Trail along Mauch Chunk lake and creek is named for him.

Lafayette’s son, Horace DeYoung Lentz, graduated Harvard Law in 1891.  He in turn endowed a scholarship there that still provides full tuition to any Carbon resident who attends Harvard Law.  Current resident Neil Makhija of Lehighton is the only living person who has benefitted from this trust.

Here in Lehighton, John S. Lentz lived at Third and Alum Streets, today’s “Schaeffer Funeral Home.”  He was superintendent of the Packerton shops.

Franklin Pierce Lentz lived at the former brick home of his father-in-law Daniel Olewine.  He held various positions with the LVRR including chief clerk of the car department at the Packerton Yard as well as Justice of the Peace in Lehighton.  He was educated at Lehighton’s “Academy” school.
The crowning achievement Frederick Leuckel's life of work in Lehighton, his 1899 building still stands today.  Neither Frederick and his son John who completed the building would live long to enjoy it.
Both men were dead
by October 1899.  (Most photos without photo credit are from the Haupt family collection).

Another pioneer immigrant of Lehighton was Frederick Leuckel, his building is still prominent in the downtown.  Born in Germany in 1807, Frederick Leuckel came to America by way of Amsterdam with $40 to his name.

He apprenticed there for seven years as a butcher.  He then made a 130-day voyage to New York City at the age of twenty-three.  He worked in the sugar factory in Easton and started a meat shop there before moving to Lehighton.  He married another German émigré Lecetta Lenzler.

Leuckel rose to financial prominence from the hard-work of his butcher shop, to investing in real estate, banks, and other businesses.  He was a major shareholder in at least four banks: two in Mauch Chunk, one bank in Catasauqua, as well as in Lehighton’s First National.

By the time of his 1875 “retirement,” he was one of our town’s wealthiest self-made men.
This circa 1908 fire next to the Leuckel building led the way for
Citizen's National Bank to construct its stone facade building next door
in around 1909.

The ‘Leuckel Building,’ completed in 1899, was the former home of Lehighton’s post office and was home to Leuckel’s and Olewine’s “First National Bank.”   It later housed the “Citizen’s National Bank.”

A fire next door around 1908 led the way for “Citizen’s” to build its prominent stone-façade modern bank building next door.  First Federal, the last and most recent bank that occupied this building, added a more modern metal face to it in the 1970s.

Lehighton has had its shares of fires.  Many of these will be detailed in 25 stop trolley tour guide book being published by the Sesquicentennial Committee.  But many businesses have been relocated or otherwise affected by the many downtown fires over the years.  The tour book will chronicle the major ones from the 1930s Elks fire, to the 1950s North First St and the 1960s South First St fires.
Here is the bunting of the opening
of the new Citizen's National Bank
building with the Leuckel
Building to the left.  The building
still stands today, however the last
bank, First Federal, covered it with
a more modern looking metal facade.
Serfas Motors before May 1918 fire - Looking north on Iron St,
with the former Trinity Lutheran Church tower at Third and Iron
in the distance.  (This Serfas family spelled their name with one 's'.)

Serfas Motors burned to the ground in May of 1918 and a three-story brown brick building went in its place.  (It is currently a Blue Ridge Cable office behind the former Times News building.)

Within the personal collection of dairyman Reuben Small are pictures of burned out cars from a "Lehighton garage fire."  Though no one is certain these are of the Serfas Motors, it is certainly a possibility.  These photos will appear at the end.
This is the Serfas fire from May 1918, taken from the south side of
Iron St, looking toward the alley behind what would one day by the
the Opera House/Bayer Building/Times News Building.  The long
building in the background was the original band hall and still stands.  Look at the end of this story for fire pictures from the Reuben Small personal collection from this time period.

Eventually, sometime before 1946, Moyer and Haupt had their first garage there.  By 1946 they took over the former Acme building at 200 to 206 North First St and began moving their Ford dealership there, this being another currently building housing BRC offices today.

Later, Moyer and Haupt moved out to Route 443 with an Edsel dealership, this dealership now trades as "Lehighton Ford."  They also operated a service station at the corner of Eighth and Mahoning Sts, today it is a medical center in the 1940s.
Moyer and Haupt on Iron St pre-1946.  Not the brick ornaments
above the row of windows.  Those can still be seen today on
this building currently housing some Blue Ridge Cable offices
at the alley behind the former Times News Building.

This picture shows Moyer and Haupt converting the old Acme
back into a garage.  Prior to it being Acme, it housed Otto Kropp's
First St garage.  Today it is the main Lehighton BRC office.

Prior to the Acme occupying 200 North First, Otto Kropp had a garage there.  He also had a Studebaker and Hudson dealership in the area of our current library.  Otto must have been quite a character.  It has been said that he once made a late-night car-swap deal with gangster "Legs" Diamond, a bootlegger who operated between New York and Philadelphia.

In 1937, Otto and his wife hosted Dr. J. Lavarowitz who was president of the "Rambling Hobos of America."  Otto was the grandfather who raised the well-known Lehighton geography teacher Michael "Corky" Kordilla.

Another well-known Lehighton business that grew, burned, and moved to another street was Kistler's Hardware.
Here is Mahlon Kistler (left) and business parnter William F. Hamilton in his mid-1920s First St Hardware Store.
It transferred to his son Mahlon "Jake" in 1957 and later to his
step-son George Griffith.  The store continues today on Second St as "Lehighton Hardware."  Hamilton was born in Scranton and was a boilermaker for the LVRR in 1910.  He died of a stroke in 1935 at the age of 50.
(Kistler pictures appear courtesy of Paula Kistler Ewaniuk.)

Kistler’s Lehighton Hardware would later move to Second Street, its current location.  Kistler started his hardware store in 1925 and ran a progressive business model, taking pride in decorating his front window.  In 1957 he handed the reins over to his son Mahlon Jr.  In 1963 they were burned out and moved to its current location on Second St.  The business went from Mahlon Jr's step-brother George Griffith.

The show window of Kistler's first hardware store included shotguns, shells and stuffed raccoons.  See the end of this story for the new store front further up First St that later burned in a 1963 fire, sending the store to Second St.
Curiously, Kistler's Hardware was located at 237 North First St,  in what would be in today's Rite Aid parking lot.  After the fire, the A&P, which was then located in today's Lehighton Hardware's Second St building, built the 14,000 square foot building Rite Aid uses today.  The A&P left the current Rite Aid building back in the 1980s.

One of the longest tenured corner grocery stores in Lehighton was Cal Haas' store at the corner of Fifth and Coal.  It served their neighborhood with credit for groceries from 1930 to 1996.  The last thirty years it was ron by Cal's son Robert "Bobby" Haas, who was known for his regimented scheduled coffee breaks at the Beacon 443 Diner.
Here are some of the Haas family from the 1955 celebration of
the 200 year anniversary of the Gnadenhutten Massacre.  From Left:
Robert Haas, his wife Geri Haas, Cal Haas, and daughter
Madeline (Haas) Kreiss Folweiler.  (Madeline's first husband
Ezra Kreiss was lost in Operation Tiger in WWII.  She re-married
Chester Folweiler, another WWII veteran.

The Trainer family had a corner store on Third and Cypress Sts.  It was taken over by Mel Everett and Dick Koch as "Ev-Ko" furniture and home appliances in 1966.  A fire destroyed the business in 1968 and the pair split in 1974.  Everett continued there in furniture and Koch established himself on Coal St where they remain today.

Mel's brother Arlington "A.W." Everett's furniture frame business in Franklin Township is also still running today, though now they specialize in frames for lift chairs.

Like Leuckel, Joseph Obert was another German immigrant butcher who prospered here.  He opened a dry goods business in Lehighton in the 1870s to which he parlayed into farm land speculation.

He eventually built one of the largest pork and cattle processing and packing plants in the east.  His sons continued the business into the 1930s.

Livestock would arrive on the LVRR and enter Obert’s stockyard on the east side of First St.  Pigs and cattle (but mostly pigs) were then marched across the street and up the alley between what is today Alfie’s Pizza and the former Hinkle’s Downtown Grille (a building first built by Obert and once held “Malta Hall” on the second floor.
This building still stands across the alley from
Obert's (today's "Alfies") and was built by Obert
after the "Lyric Theater" was torn down.  It was
home to Losos and Sondheim clothiers (who
once occupied part of the Obert building).
The second floor once housed the Knights of
Malta and a portion of Obert's slaughter
house can be seen rear left.  Look for interior
pictures of this building at the end of this
article.  Most will also remember the most
recent owner of this building was
Hinkle's Downtown Grille.

The large slaughter house was located on what is today a municipal parking lot behind Alfies.  The block across from this alley, once was known as the Obert block.

The Obert’s lived at both his sprawling building in front of his slaughter house on First Street as well as another home he built later on South Second near Trinity Lutheran Church (now owned by Barrett Ravenhurst and Rick Brong).
The beautiful Victorian-era home was first built by Joseph and Catherine Obert in the 1880s or 1890s at
212 South Second, catty-corner from Trinity Lutheran Church and is one of the 25 stops of the Sesquicentennial
Trolley tour.  Seen here in this photo is Joseph and Catherine's son William and their grandson Horace
Obert Sr.  William's wife was Florence.  Horace Obert Jr was the long time chiropractor in Lehighton up until
is recent retirement a few years ago.  The new and only third owners of the home are currently Barrett Ravenhurst
and Rick Brong.

The three Gaston brothers (Carson, Wayne, and LeRoy who run the pizza shop), are the current owners of Obert’s First St property and have done well maintaining the building’s former glory.
This picture gives quite a glimpse at the classes of society of early 1900 Lehighton.  The Victorian-era garbed
ladies and gentlemen on the yard versus the blood-stained work clothes of the man in the street.  You can
also see Loso's and Sondheim's former location before moving across the alley.

It is here where we can see the meeting point today.

By studying the many buildings in Lehighton and by getting to know our history, we can see where our past meets our future.  The Obert and Leuckel buildings are a good place to start.

The once ornate dental work and finials are gone.  The large rectangular sign that proudly touted the “Leuckel Building 1899” now says “White’s Trading.”

Just like the once powerful anthracite and transportation industries are likely never to return, the works and fortunes of our pioneer residents are also mostly long gone.

But we are here today because of them.  And their legacy to us is to live in a town where their dreams once prospered.  It is for us to fulfill that potential as we are fit to do.

Lehighton Deaths of the 1890s:

The 1890s were hard on many of Lehighton’s most prominent pioneer citizens.  Lewis Graver died in January 1892 (just weeks after his and Leah’s 50th wedding anniversary).

Joseph Obert died in June of 1897 at the age of 76.  He once donated the land at the corner of Second and Iron to build Zion’s United Church of Christ.

Moses Heilman died in May of 1898.

Also, two sons of two early Lehighton tanners died prematurely in 1898.  Daniel Olewine Sr died at seventy-nine in March of 1895.  But his son Daniel Irwin Olewine died of typhoid fever in Philadelphia in January 1898 at the age of forty-two.

Another Lehighton connected tragedy occurred in May of 1898 when Burgess B. J. Kuntz’s son Edward was seriously injured from an exploding gasoline tank at a Missouri steel company.  He had just begun working there as a chemist.

Upon receiving the news via telegram, Postmaster and former tanner and mayor Kuntz immediately left for Missouri.  However he was unable to reach his son before he passed.  His remains were shipped back to Lehighton for burial.  Edward J. Kuntz was only twenty-five.

Ironically, in 1899, in the same year that their building was completed, both Frederick and John Leuckel died.  Frederick in June and his son John died unexpectedly in October from stomach difficulties.

Incidentally, John Leuckel’s mother-in-law, who was also the mother of Lehighton’s well-known planning mill owner Henry Miller died in an unfortunate accident just months after John’s death.  Mrs George Miller died at the age of 79 from a fractured her skull after falling into the family well at their Franklin home.

The Wilkes-Barre Bank Heist in 1870 leads to arrests and a murder:

My favorite story involves a pair of bank robbers who hit a bank in Wilkes-Barre in 1870 who came to Lehighton to lay low.  The four suspicious men were “loafing about” Mantz’s Hotel (in the block south of the Hi-Rise today) and rumors quickly spread around town about the character and deeds of these men.

Forty year old Constable John “J. T.” Weston took the gossip seriously.  The robbers instantly drew their guns on the constable’s approach, making their escape out the back of the hotel.  And though it was February, they crossed the LVRR tracks and went into the river, all the while during a “raging snowstorm.”

Weston gathered a posse of men, all armed, and made their way to Weissport, to the vicinity of old bottling works (behind Hofford’s red-brick mill at the end of the bridge owned today by Tom McEvilly) where the crooks were said to leave the river.

The men were captured later, but not without resistance.  Their attempts to fire at the posse were in vain as their weapons were too wet from their mid-winter swim.  Rumors quickly spread that the $30,000 in cash, bonds, and securities were stashed on the mountainside somewhere opposite of Packerton dip, in the Long Run section of East Weissport.

The robbers were sentenced to 20 years in the Eastern State penitentiary and were said to have died there.  However by 1906, it was speculated that they communicated the whereabouts to other prisoners who upon their release came to town to claim the treasure.

In May 1906 three strangers arrived in town, at least one of them was well-dressed and seemed to be carrying a large sum of money.  He and a friend got into fisticuffs in a Lehighton “saloon” in the afternoon, the friend threatening to have the other arrested.

Later, word spread through town that these men, along with another man, were seen digging in the area of the missing bank loot.  That night, three shots rang out in a yard of a home on the outer edge of town.

They found the well dressed man with three bullets in his lungs, with the muzzle blast burned into his clothes, shot at close range.

Suicide was ruled out.  He had a watch and about $35 on him.  Authorities suspected the clever perpetrator left a small portion to give the appearance of suicide over robbery.

Constable J. T. Weston was born in Carbon’s “frontier” logging settlement of Sandy Run.  He died in Allentown in 1914.
Lehighton's Three Stone-facade Banks:

At about the same time Citizen's Bank was going in, the Hazleton National Bank arrived in town and likewise wanted to build an impressive structure to lure Lehighton's abundant cash flows.  Hazleton took over the former First National Bank.

First St was once known as “Bank St," most likely referring to the street closest to the bank of the river.

The Hazelton Bank building was opened in December of 1911, and for the convenience of a parking lot and modern drive-up window, moved to the corner of First and North Sts in 1963.  The original stone face of Citizens Bank has long been obscured by metal-work meant to give the old bank a “modern” look.  It was most recently known as First Federal Bank.  Another bank, on South First, was once known as Dine Bank in 1916, then later Bank of Lehighton, then People’s Bank, and most recent

The problem is that men, rich narcissistic men can’t get it up with intelligent women. So when a rich man dies the not so smart Conservative women then want men such as these men in the Conservative/Liberal party to keep them well fed. Conservative women don,t like smarter women for the same reason a lot of women don’t like female doctors. Women of course now make up 51% of the population. Old Conservative women are the most vulnerable and therefore the most dangerous to Democracy. It’s far too easy for gold diggers to loose everything and therefore they become the most selfish.

What’s the legal basis for his special-counsel investigation? We have a right to know.
For precisely what federal crimes is the president of the United States under investigation by a special counsel appointed by the Justice Department?

It is intolerable that, after more than two years of digging — the 16-month Mueller probe having been preceded by the blatantly suspect labors of the Obama Justice Department and FBI — we still do not have an answer to that simple question.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein owes us an answer.

Abigail Dupree - The Extended Feed of Miss Dupree Part 5      Cache   Translate Page

Release Year: 2018
Studio: IR
Cast: Cool Girl
Genres: BDSM
Video language: English

You would think that after all of this time we wouldn't have anything left to do to Abigail Dupree, but we pride ourselves on the depth of our creativity and our dungeon. We have so many devices that she has yet to experience and even the most mundane things can be twisted to new ends. For example, even a plain chair is an interesting device when we bend Abigail in half on it and start wailing on her ass with a brutal caning.

But the spike chair is another matter entirely. This thing is awful from the outset. We sit her down into it and the wooden spines are instantly digging into her back. We lock her down so that they get to bite her arms, too. And if we wanted to we could even add a bit of serrated cushioning for her ass. The entire device is built for the purpose of delivering as much pain per square inch as possible, even while the subject is completely immobile and left alone. The entire thing is a bit more insidious than it first appears, actually. The chair isn't completely covered in spikes. That would be a waste. Instead they are only on the places where Abigail would push down against them to alleviate pain in another area. She can't breathe without making them dig in deeper. The entire experience is agony.

Get your adrenaline surging To The Max with an X-rated gym membership guaranteed to get you hard in all the right places. These muscle pigs have round tight asses that get the workout of their lives from the fat juicy cocks found in the notorious San Francisco Athletic Club. Slip into your jockstrap and get ready to sweat!

Scene One

Peterbuilt Jack Stuart and muscleman Tom Penn hit the showers and trade blowjobs. Penn bends Stuart over for an ass-slapping rim job and wild finger fuck; Stuart responds by going after Penn's hard cock. After some rough housing, the two get down to business with a ferocious ass fucking, Stuart plugging Penn's pink hole. The two stroke each other to completion on the steamy tile floor.

Scene Two

Eric Payne gives Erik Michaels a lesson in lust in between sets. Michaels swallows Payne's sweet sausage, then demands a little reciprocation. When Payne has gotten his fill, he bends Michaels over a weight bench. At first he eats his eager ass, then moves his fingers in to pry open the hole for his cock. The pounding comes quick and deep as the fur-covered top jams Michaels' hole full of his barbell-like cock. Frank Parker must have heard the groaning _ he arrives on scene just in time to stuff Michaels' face.

Payne gives Michaels' ass a break and goes after Parker (who's feasting on Michaels' cock) with a big black dildo. After loosening up the muscle daddy, Payne jams in his cock and rides him hard. Payne's two willing bottoms take both ends of a double-sided dildo and push it until their assholes nearly kiss. Payne cums on their asses while Michaels and Parker shoots ropes of sticky jism.

Scene Three

Mike Roberts puts bottom boy Robert Black through the paces in the gym office. Black chokes down Roberts' sausage-sized cock with an unrepentant hunger. Roberts expect more than a gag order from Black and lays him on a nearby bench for some deep digging and hot pounding. Muscle daddy Roberts wants to go deeper and lets Black bounce on his fat cock in an attempt to further his goal. After fingering Black to orgasm, Roberts takes out his cock and plasters Black's face with a hot sticky load.

Scene Four

Eric Evans and Brent Banes get caught fucking around in the gym locker room by Mark Pulver. He commandeers the two young men's four holes, letting Evans lick at his pits while sweet-faced Banes goes to town on their cocks. The double sucking leads to more intensive action as Banes starts to squat on Evan's rock hard dick. But Pulver wants that ass for himself. He takes Evans from the rear while Banes feeds him his cock. The three shoot in a wet and explosive group climax.

Apple May Have Abandoned Its AirPower Wireless Charging Mat      Cache   Translate Page

Apple may have abandoned its previously announced but unreleased AirPower wireless charger. The charger was touted as being able to simultaneously charge up to three devices.

We were expected to company to give us a release date for the long delayed charging mat; however, Apple did not even mention it during the keynote today. Additionally, the updated website appears to have removed nearly all references to the device.

Daring Fireball's John Gruber believes the project may have been scrapped. He tweets, "AirPower must be well and truly fucked. No one at Apple will say a word about it, even off the record. And as a result they didn’t even mention inductive charging during the event, even though the XS and XR both charge faster than the X."

SANCTIONS ON SYRIA: THE CRIMINAL, SILENT, KILLER      Cache   Translate Page

In 2016, I visited the centre depicted in the linked RT news report on the effect of western sanctions on children with cancer. At the time, the director told me they were trying to help 240 children, were underfunded and in debt, the people working there were volunteers, and (at that time) were facing constant power outages, as was the norm in Aleppo due to terrorists outside of Aleppo controlling the power plant.

Formerly, cancer patients in the north of Syria had excellent treatment at the Kindi Hospital, a massive complex that was respected throughout the region. It was truck-bombed by terrorists in late 2013, completely destroyed. In November 2016, I met and interviewed the former director of Kindi, Dr. Ibrahim Hadid. He emphasized how he tried to get the attention of international organizations both when the hospital was initially occupied by terrorists, and later when it was destroyed. He was met with silence.

Yet another obstacle for cancer patients needing treatment was the fact that for years, the road out of Aleppo would be cut by terrorists, meaning the 1.5 million or more civilians within greater Aleppo were under siege. Aleppo residents told me there were times where the siege lasted for weeks, and more.

The director of this centre rightly insisted there should not be sanctions on medicine. This is criminal. As noted in the RT report, 30 children had died of cancer in that area, due to western sanctions, according to the director.

I previously wrote about the issue of these criminal western sanctions on Syria, quoting Dr. Bouthaina Shaaban, who I interviewed in December 2015. I noted:
In terms of how to provide actual relief to the Syrian people, Dr. Shaaban stated:
“The first thing the West should do in this battle against terrorism is to lift the sanctions from the Syrian people. The sanctions are helping terrorists against the Syrian people, who are suffering doubly from the terrorists and from Western measures against the Syrian people.”

Stephen Gowans recently wrote about the US government’s long-time plans to topple the Syrian government, sanctions being one part of the plot.

“Documents prepared by US Congress researchers as early as 2005 revealed that the US government was actively weighing regime change in Syria. …As an alternative to direct military intervention to topple the Syrian government, the United States chose to pressure Damascus through sanctions and support for the internal Syrian opposition.”
The advocacy website, End The Sanctions on Syria, notes: “Similar sanctions on Iraq in the 1990s were shown to have caused the deaths of more than half a million Iraqi children.”

The site went on to report that (as of May 2014), “701 of 1,921 Syrian health centres have been ‘completely gutted’ by the terrorist attacks. Yet rehabilitation of these centres is retarded by the US-EU sanctions, which have already left ‘a deep mark on the healthcare system’… including by blocking access to medicines, medical equipment, transport and communications.”

A May 27, 2015 article in The Lancet reports: “The cost of basic food items has risen six-fold since 2010, although it varies regionally. With the exception of drugs for cancer and diabetes, Syria was 95 percent self-sufficient in terms of drug production before the war. This has virtually collapsed as have many hospitals and primary health-care centres.
Economic sanctions have not removed the President: …only civilians are in the line of fire, attested to by the dire state of household and macro-economies. Sanctions are among the biggest causes of suffering for the people of Syria.”
Recall that last April, when the US and allies illegally bombed Syria on false pretext of Syria having used a chemical or nerve agent in Douma (didn’t happen), one of the targets was a facility in densely-inhabited Damascus which was involved in the local production of cancer treatment components.
As I wrote:
Regarding the actual nature of the buildings bombed, Syrian media, SANA, describes the Pharmaceutical and Chemical Industries Research Institute as “centered on preparing the chemical compositions for cancer drugs.” The destruction of this institute is particularly bitter, as, under the criminal western sanctions, cancer medicines sales to Syria are prohibited.
Interviews with one of its employees, Said Said, corroborate SANA’s description of the facility making cancer treatment and other medicinal components. One article includesSaid’s logical point: “If there were chemical weapons, we would not be able to stand here. I’ve been here since 5:30 am in full health – I’m not coughing.”
Of the facility, the same SANA article noted that its labs had been visited by the OPCW, which issued two reports negating claims of any chemical weapons activities. This is a point Syria’s Ambassador al-Ja’afari raised in the April 14 UN Security Council meeting, noting that the OPCW “handed to Syria an official document which confirmed that the Barzeh centre was not used for any type of chemical activity” that would be in contravention to Syria’s obligations regarding the OPCW.

What Do Flamingos Do at Night?      Cache   Translate Page

It's a common trope in fiction: When people aren't around to watch, other creatures of the world let down their guard. Zoo animals have secret meetings. Toys come to life. So it would make sense if, settled into bed one evening, you were suddenly seized with a white-hot nighttime question: What are the flamingos up to?

As birds go, flamingos don't seem all that mysterious. They're brightly colored and quite recognizable. They tend to hang around out in the open, and sometimes, when they're in a mingling mood, they even dance.

But appearances can be deceiving. "For a large animal in the 21st century, there are still so many unknowns about them," says Paul Rose, a flamingo expert based at the WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre, in Gloucestershire, England. For a recent study published in Zoo Biology, Rose decided to get a new view on his study subjects, setting up a nighttime surveillance system to figure out exactly what they do when we're away.

Rose describes himself as "a little bit of a flamingo obsessive." He's the co-chair of the IUCN's Flamingo Specialist Group. His "Flamingo Diary," which traces the lives of the Centre's birds, covers everything from avian flu to preening habits. In his Skype profile photo, he is wearing a pink shirt.

For his dissertation, Rose focused on one particular unknown: whether flamingos form social relationships within their flocks. (It turns out they do—"They have very strongly bonded friendships, which is very nice," he says.) Figuring this out required long days of watching individual birds interact.

But while Rose was digging through existing research on wild flamingos, he found a few papers that mentioned nocturnal behavior, too. "I thought, am I only seeing half the story with my own observations?" he says. Soon after, he continues, "I got three night vision cameras."

Rose and a student researcher set up the cameras around one particular Slimbridge enclosure, which houses about 270 greater flamingos. They put one on each side of the large pool, and one near a small island where the flamingos nest. They then programmed them to take photos every five minutes. After about five months of this, they were able to draw some conclusions.

For one thing, Rose says, flamingos like to snack at night. Foraging behavior, which includes searching for food in the pools or or in pellet bowls, peaked around 8 p.m. (This was particularly true on moonlit evenings, says Rose.) Parents often fed their chicks at night as well. Some birds also perform courtship displays, although most prefer to do this during the day, when their moves are more visible.

Most interestingly to Rose, they use the space differently: "They spread out much more over their pool," he says. He is hoping these conclusions will influence the design of future enclosures, and help zoo staff to better understand the birds under their care.

In other words, when we're not watching, flamingos mostly keep being flamingos. "Nothing too weird or wonderful to report," Rose says. "Just what you'd expect a flamingo to do." We can all rest easy.

Dollar Chops in Narrow Ranges       Cache   Translate Page
Eurostat confirmed that EMU industrial output fell for a second consecutive month in July.  The 0.8% decline was larger than expected and is the third decline of such a magnitude in four months and weighed on the euro.  German and Spanish industrial output had surprised on the downside last week, and  Italy matched suit today with a report showing a 1.8% contraction, much larger than expected, and bringing the year-over-year rate to -1.3% (workday adjusted).  It is the largest decline since January 2015.

We had anticipated that the ECB staff would shave its growth forecasts, which are announced tomorrow.    In June, the staff forecast 2.1% growth this year slipping to 1.7% next year.  France took the jump on the ECB by revising its growth down to 1.7% this year and next from 2.0% and 1.9% respectively.  The poor economic data and softer forecasts come at a difficult time for Europe as next year's budgets are prepared.

Slower growth translates into larger deficit as a percent of GDP.  France revised its deficit projection to 2.6% this year from 2.3% and next year 2.8% of GDP rather than 2.4%.    Although the Italian government has been making more investor-friendly comments, which have been rewarded by bond market investors, the room to maneuver is limited.  Moreover, the decline in the sovereign yield and premium over Germany may be having a diminishing impact on bank shares, which are off 1.4% at pixel time while the benchmark yield is about two basis points lower.

The euro has chopped between $1.1570 and almost $1.1610, staying within yesterday's ranges.  Sterling also remains within yesterday's range.  While a date in November for a special UK-EU summit to sign an agreement is bandied about, the other side of the problem, the cabinet, and Parliament are digging in for a fight.  There is talk of a leadership challenge.  The Bank of England meets tomorrow, and a unanimous decision on rates is widely expected after last month's hike.  The market does not anticipate another rate hike until after Brexit at the end of March 2019.

Meanwhile, the EC's confrontation with Hungary may come to a head today.  It is threatening sanctions over what is seen as a crisis of democracy.  A 2/3 majority is needed to approve sanctions under Article 7.  If the EU cannot muster the support, it may embolden others and what has been dubbed the rise of 'illiberal democracies."

In Asia, stocks remained under pressure.  The MSCI Asia Pacific Index fell 0.2% to extend the losing streak for a 10th consecutive session, the longest run since 2002.  The contrast is stark.  The Topix and Shanghai Composite, as well as the leading markets in Europe, like the DAX, CAC, FTSE-Milan, and the FTSE 250 are all below the 50- and 200-day moving averages.  The US S&P 500 posted a bullish outside up day yesterday and is within two percent of the record high seen in late August.  European shares are firmer today, rising 0.2% near midday.  The latest fund tracker reports showed European equity funds saw the first inflow in nearly six months.  The S&P 500 is up 8% year-to-date coming into today's session, while the Dow Jones Stoxx 600 is down 3.3%.

The Canadian dollar is holding on to the bulk of yesterday's gains, with the last surge sparked by reports that it is willing to make a concession on dairy, a sector not included in the current NAFTA. White House economic adviser Kudlow suggested that this was a major stumbling block.  However,  many had anticipated Canada to make this move as it had already signaled its intention and had done the same thing to strike a deal with the EU.  Other more serious hurdles seem to remain.  These include anti-dumping panels, a sunset clause, intellectual property rights and patents for pharma, and protection for what Canada calls cultural industries.

Of course, NAFTA is not the only consideration for the Canadian dollar.   The Bank of Canada widely expected to hike rates next month.  The OIS market appears to be discounting a bit more than an 85% chance of rate increase.  US dollar support is seen in the CAD1.3000-CAD1.3020 area.

South Korea reported an unexpected jump in August unemployment (4.2% from 3.8%), and this makes it more difficult for the central bank to hike interest rates.  It may have to resort to macroprudential measures if it wants to curb surging property prices.  India reports CPI and industrial production.  Both are expected to have eased.  The dollar initially rose to new record highs against the rupee before recovering on the back of reports suggesting new measures will be announced to support the currency early next week (following a planned economic review this weekend.

The dollar has been confined to about 10 pips on either side of JPY111.55. There are $1.13 bln of options struck between JPY111.50 and JPY111.65 that expire today.  Dollar support extends to JPY111.20-JPY111.30.  It has not traded above JPY112.00 since August 1.

The US session features the August PPI and the Fed's Beige Book ahead of the meeting on September 26.  Governor Brainard speaks a little after midday in Detriot, and Fed President Bullard speaks in Chicago shortly after the stock market opens.  A rate hike is as done of a deal as these things get.  The EIA oil inventory figures will also receive attention after the API estimated an 8.63 mln barrel draw.  Analysts had expected a 2.7 mln barrel build.  The $9-$10 a barrel spread between WTI and Brent has helped US step up its oil exports, while the EIA shaved US output projections.

TUSCANY PHOTO TOURS | ICELAND PHOTO TOURS | LOFOTEN PHOTO TOURS | LAPLAND PHOTO TOURS | INSTAGRAM [ENG] Is it really necessary to say where it was taken? Well, I think it's one of the most famous places in the Dolomites, the wonderful Seiser Alm! This plateau offers breathtaking 360-degree views, from the Sassolungo and the Sassopiatto that rise majestically (the mountains you see in the picture) to the Catinaccio range, from the imposing Sciliar massif to the Odle in the distance! A quiet and rather humid summer dawn gave me this wonderful sunrise, with the first lights of the day striking the walls of the mountains! What do you think about coming with me to experience these emotions? To visit these amazing places? I have just put online on my website all dates for the fall / winter season 2018/2019, with departures for Iceland, Lofoten, Lapland.. In case you are interested, contact me for anything directly here, with the contact form on the website or at! And for my Tuscany/Cinque Terre tours (all-year round!) remember to visit !
A visitare questi posti incredibili? All American (ESTREIA!)

All American estreia dia 24 de outubro, à meia-noite.
