Gyan Prakash is the Dayton-Stockton Professor of History at Princeton University and specializes in South Asian history, colonial and postcolonial studies, and urban history. He was a member of the Subaltern Studies Collective until its dissolution in 2006, and has been a recipient of fellowships by the National Science Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the National Endowment of Humanities. He is the author of several books, including Mumbai Fables (2010), which was adapted for the film Bombay Velvet (2015), for which he wrote the story and co-wrote the script. His forthcoming book is Emergency Chronicles, which will be published in early 2019.

On the night of June 25, 1975, Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency in India, suspending constitutional rights and rounding up her political opponents in midnight raids across the country. In the twenty-one harrowing months that followed, her regime unleashed a brutal campaign of coercion and intimidation, arresting and torturing people by the tens of thousands, razing slums, and imposing compulsory sterilization on the poor. In spite of this searing experience, the Emergency has received little historical treatment. Stripping away the comfortable myth that this authoritarian turn was a momentary episode brought on entirely by Indira's crisis of power, this paper argues that the political crisis in India formed part of a larger global moment during the late 1960s and the early 1970s when ruling regimes around the world faced upheavals from below. Indira attempted to deal with the challenge to her power, and sought to salvage the postcolonial order, by suppressing constitutional rights. This paper examines the meanings of democracy raised by the political turmoil. Drawing on prison diaries and letters, it asks how the imprisoned leaders thought about democracy and the phenomenology of the loss of freedom behind bars. Did introspection produce a greater dedication to the more profound understanding of democracy and the value of equality, or did their writings and thoughts on freedom stop at the door of competitive party politics? These questions are important for not only understanding the experience of imprisonment during the Emergency but also for what they imply for the period that followed.

An Interview with Ai Addyson-Zhang - Entrepreneurial Social Media Educator       Cache   Translate Page

Dr. Ai Addyson-Zhang is an Associate Professor of Public Relations at Stockton University and a Digital Learning Consultant, Blogger, Speaker, and Live Streamer.

Keeping up with everything that Ai is doing within the education space is almost a full-time job in itself. She is a top writer on Medium and has recently been featured in Forbes.

Recently, I had the chance to ask Ai some questions about using social media for teaching and learning:

Does social media connect learners and educators in a more relatable way?

Today’s students are digital learners. Mobile phones and numerous digital media devices have become an integral part to students’ educational and learning experience. Contemporary students consume content on the go and rely heavily on social media and digital media devices to connect with their peers. Emojis, for example, have almost become a default language to today’s students.

As educators, we need to embrace and respect that. Instead of expecting students to come to our space, we need to make a concerted effort to connect with students at where they are and learn to speak their language. This will require us as educators to step out of our own comfort zones and do some of our own extensive un-learning and re-learning, or de-constructing and re-constructing.

I will forever remember the excitement on a student’s face several years ago when she first received an emoji from me on Snapchat. She called me her “coolest” professor ever. It was at that moment a light bulb switched on in my mind. Since then, I have become a heavy user of various social networking sites in my classes to facilitate teaching and learning, such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat.

I have discovered that when professors are on social media interacting with students and speaking their language, teachers become a lot more relatable to the students. Communicating back and forth with students via emojis, GIFs, videos, audios, and sometimes selfies helps break down the power-distance between teachers and students. It humanizes the teacher as holistic humans; and students enjoy discovering the human side of their instructors. This humanizing factor helps teachers become not only more relatable to the students, but also help cultivate a stronger bond between teachers and students.

These deeper emotional connections are conducive to learning. I learned a profound lesson when I just started my teaching career at the University of Maryland as a teaching assistant. A mentor shared with me, “Students don’t always remember what they learn; but they remember how a class makes them feel.” For some reason, that sentence stuck in my mind for more than a decade and played an important role in shaping my teaching philosophy. The emotional component in learning helps students remember the information they learn in the classroom and empowers them to be more interested and proactive in learning. The emotional bond also has the potential to transform a class into a community, which is what i frequently hear from my students nowadays.

How can social media bridge the gap between teaching and practice?

One of the challenges facing higher education is a gap between what students learn in the classroom and what they are expected to do in the industry. Before I embarked on my social media and entrepreneurial journey, I struggled to identify ways to bridge the gap between what I taught in the classroom and what my students needed to practice in real life. I oftentimes read in my course evaluations that my courses were too theory-based and did not have sufficient real-life implications. It was hurtful to read these comments. However, I didn’t know how to improve the situation.

Later, through self-directed learning and intentional networking in the digital space, I discovered that I was the missing link in the disconnect between classroom teaching and real-world application. That realization brought me into a new world to me. I myself decided to become a practitioner. Today, I am a proud blogger, speaker, host of a weekly Facebook live show, and a digital learning consultant. I no longer struggle with identifying ways to interlink the two camps of teaching and practice. Instead, I have a wealth of professional networks and resources to share with my students. Playing the dual-role of being an educator and practitioner familiarizes me with both the academic environment and day-to-day practice; it helps transform my classroom teaching. Everything I do outside the classroom has made me a better teacher inside the classroom in numerous profound ways.

For example, for my Social Media class, I now have content from my own Facebook live show to share with my students. On my show, I interview leading industry professionals from all over the US and the world to discuss topics related to social media marketing and communication. Many of the guests on my show are sought-after industry speakers; and their depth and breadth of certain subjects have far surpassed my understanding on these subjects. For example, on September 19, at 5PM, EST, I will have Cathy Hackl on my show to discuss Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Mixed Reality. Cathy is a highly established industry expert and sought-after speaker on these topics. Her insight will be much more valuable to my students than what I could tell them based on my own limited understanding of these topics.

In addition, because my show has regular viewers from fifteen countries, this global perspective has substantially enriched classroom discussion. It is such a humbling experience to see that my extended professional networks and communities have become an indispensable part to students’ learning journey. These connections have also helped bridge the gap between education and practice in such profound and transformative ways. Moreover, the openness of all these digital and social media platforms has successfully blurred the line between formal classroom learning and informal everyday learning. An important lesson that I communicate to my students is that learning shouldn’t be limited to the classroom. Learning never ends and technology makes lifelong learning feasible.

Does social media transcend the traditional teacher-student boundary?

Traditionally, the teacher-student relationship ends once a class is over. However, this is not the case for teachers who use digital media devices and tools to connect with their students. Technology and social media have made self-paced and self-directed learning possible. Learning is happening not only inside the classroom, but outside in the digital space as well. Over the course of the past several years, social media has extended my availability to my students. I have become a part of my students’ learning journey.

For example, used right, Facebook group can be an effective e-learning platform. I created Facebook groups for each of the classes that I am currently teaching in the fall semester. Facebook group has numerous features that can help me stay in constant communication with my students such as live streaming, units, poll, events, Q&A, stories, etc. All these features allow me to get to know my students beyond the classroom walls and to offer personalized coaching.

Video is a particularly effective format to transcend the traditional teacher-student boundary. One way I use video is via Facebook live streaming. I create weekly Facebook live streaming Q&A sessions (scheduled as “Events” on the group pages). During these live streaming sessions, I answer my students’ questions related to the class, as well as career and fun activities. Because I use a third-party tool (BeLive) to conduct my Facebook live, I can invite up to three students to join me during any particular live streaming session. It feels like a virtual mini-conference. During these Q&A live streaming sessions, students and I have conversations regarding their questions; and the rest of the students who join us live share their opinions in the comment section. In other words, students are no longer learning from me passively, but are actively co-creating a learning experience with me and the rest of the class. Even the students who cannot join the live Q&A can watch the replay and share their experience as well.

Another way I use video is to use Facebook Stories to share my day-to-day life especially when I attend professional conferences, workshops, or events. For example, during the first week of class, I was attending a digital marketing conference. I used Facebook Stories to bring my students with me to “experience” the excitement and intellectual stimulation of attending one of the biggest digital marketing conferences in the US with over 24,000 attendees. Without a digital platform such as Facebook group, I wouldn’t have been able to share the experience with my students as it was happening. I could inform my students of what happened after the conference was over. However, it would not be the same. The synergy of a live event wouldn’t be there.

Besides professional activities, I also use Facebook stories to share a little bit about my personal life. Students have “met” my kids and husband. In general, these storytelling efforts have humanized who I am as a teacher and allowed me to connect with my students at a level that involves and evokes emotions. The emotional component helps me nurture a warm classroom environment conducive to learning. This is especially the case for online classes.

What are some of your best practices when it comes to using social media for teaching and learning?

  • Keep at least 80% of the content you share on social media professional. This is the case especially if you are using these platforms in the classroom, because students will watch your content. You want to model professional usage of social media platforms. Most of the content that I share on all platforms that I use is related to social media, education, communication, and entrepreneurship. These are the subjects that I teach. I do also share more personal information on selected platforms such as Facebook Stories, Instagram, and Instagram stories. However, I keep in mind that everything I share has the possibility of being viewed by my students. I also teach this to my students. The content that they convey to the outside world, even with supposedly private platforms or settings, has the potential to be viewed by the public. Nothing is truly private in the digital space.
  • Develop proper social media etiquette. I have a section on each of my syllabi dedicated to Social Media Etiquette. Because social media is a relatively egalitarian space, I want my students to still remember that I am their professor, not exactly their “friend.” They cannot call me “dude” for example. I require my students call me by “Dr.” even if it is on social media. I believe classroom is a safe and ideal place for students to learn and practice professional social media etiquette.
  • Communicate your availability to your students. Social media doesn’t sleep, but, instructors do. I tell my students the specific hours that I will be responding to their social media messages. I also tell them the specific hours that I will be holding the virtual office hours via Facebook live or Instagram live. Additionally, I tell my students on the first day of class that the preferred way to contact me is via each class’s Facebook Group because it allows everyone to see the questions and engage in peer-to-peer learning, which is a priority to me. I also let my students know that they have the freedom to contact me via various private messaging platforms such as on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. However, I won’t get back to them as quickly as other preferred means.
  • Respect students’ privacy. If you decide to incorporate social media and digital tools into your classes to facilitate teaching and learning, you will encounter student resistance. I have met students who refused to be on social media due to various reasons. Also, some students don’t like their private space being invaded (students perceive social media as their “private” space). In these circumstances, I do respect their choice. I allow students to create fake accounts for learning purposes. Meanwhile, I communicate to my students that if they choose to follow me on social media, their content might be consumed by me. They are encouraged to follow me on social media, but not required. However, as my classes are all communication and digital-mediated related, I do emphasize how crucial it is for them to understand social media and to build their digital footprints. Finally, if you are an instructor afraid of losing your personal privacy, you can create separate classroom-related social media accounts. I have seen people do that with great success.
  • Embrace a lifelong student mentality. Incorporating social media into classes as an educational tool is not easy. It is time- and energy-consuming. One reason is that social networking sites change constantly. New features emerge and old ones become obsolete. As educators, we have to engage in constant learning and make an effort to practice intentional networking and join relevant communities to share resources and learn from each other. We call these communities Personal Learning Networks (PLN). Twitter and LinkedIn, for instance, have lots of forward-thinking educators who are experts on digital learning and pedagogical innovation. Discover, connect, and get to know them. You can even schedule virtual hangout with people. I do it all the time. Many educators are willing to help and share resources and ideas. At the same time, be willing to take risks, experiment with ideas and initiatives, and most importantly, admit that we don’t know everything. Although many educators hold a terminal degree in their respective fields, learning has no end. Both teachers and students need to understand and adopt a forever-student mentality.

Any final thoughts on social media and education?

Reflecting on my teaching career, the most compelling takeaway is that we educators need to practice what we preach and model behaviors that we want to see in the classroom. This is especially important for preparing our students to find and create meaningful work after college. Although cultivating students’ digital literacy has become an important topic of discussion, to truly prepare students to become digitally savvy and literate, teachers themselves have to embody these desired changes. Without teachers becoming digitally ready first, students are not going to take our words seriously and be able to meaningfully act on the education that we provide them. To borrow from Gandhi’s words, educators need to be the change that we wish to see in the classroom.

Scott Morrison deserves a chance as PM. His work is cut out for him, as he negotiates chaff thrown up by Turnbull and mates. Turnbull is still attacking Dutton, running a commentary from NYC but declining to be interviewed by 3AW. A 9 y/o child grandstands over the Australian National anthem, taking the knee because she feels that the anthem should not say Australians are young and free. She feels Australians are not young. She also does not like Australia being described as fair. She feels that a fair go refers to colour, not appropriate odds. Such an opinion is not normally newsworthy, but the child has academic parents who 'inform' her bias. For the record, the anthem is fine. Australians should proudly recite it.

Recently I've spoken to some young people on touchy subjects. One sixteen year old boy felt Turnbull was a good PM and did not have to be rolled. Another twelve year old girl feels that Serena was hard done by, by Mark Knight's cartoon. It is ok to have opinions, but they should be backed up by more than feelings. Turnbull betrayed his constituents and backers by outsourcing policy for power. He has cost Australia $billions in lost opportunity and his continued presence was going to place Bill Shorten in the PM's position. Further  to secure the PM's position, Turnbull lied about Tony Abbott. Serena was wrong to receive coaching during her match, and the code violation penalties were appropriate. She was wrong to blame sexism, or to threaten the umpire's future in the code. What young people see in either is probably related to appalling low standards of reporting.

Serena Williams whispered to Osaka that the boos Osaka received after winning the grand slam event of the US Open were not for her. It was the most gracious thing Serena has said since the start of that match, and hints at her greatness as a player. But why was it whispered? And why were her ridiculous complaints spoken?

A daily column on what the ALP have as a policy, supported by a local member, and how it has 'helped' the local community. I'll stop if I cannot identify a policy. Feel free to make suggestions. Contact me on FB, not twitter. I have twitter, but never look at it.

Gabrielle Williams was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Carers and Volunteers, working with the Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing and the Minister for Families and Children. Williams was given those titles when elected in 2014. It is difficult to find what value she has been to Dandenong, but clearly the ALP see her as the future. The Andrews government is spending $2.8 million on biodiversity. As part of the project, students in Dandenong are being given $4500 to provide seating for them while they grow a garden preserving biodiversity. The garden includes flora sourced locally. It is nice students can sit while they garden together. One imagines the seats will have appropriately placed plaques with the minister's name. Do you approve of the lessons learned by your child as they sit on the minister's name and replant local flora for biodiversity? What does this teach children about biodiversity? How might it be viewed in terms of immigration? Does multiculturalism promote cultural diversity? What about gender diversity being locally sourced? Should the word 'biodiversity' appear in the national anthem?

As part of the November 24th Vic election campaign I have a petition I want to bring before the Opposition Leader Matthew Guy. I believe Matthew will be the next premier of Victoria and so I am petitioning him as I raise the issues of Employment, Crime and Education in Dandenong. I am also seeking money for my campaign. I don't have party resources, and so my campaign is on foot, and on the internet. Any money I receive that is not spent on the campaign will go to Grow 4 Life. I am asking questions like "What do you love about Dandenong?" and "If you could change something in Dandenong to make it better, what would it be?" I'm not limiting the questions to state issues. I'm happy to discuss anything, and get things done.

Here is a video I made Love by Nat King Cole

"L-O-V-E" is a jazz song written by Bert Kaempfert and Milt Gabler for American singer-pianist Nat King Cole's 1965 album L-O-V-E (the last album released before Cole's death on February 15, 1965). The song had already been an instrumental track on Kaempfert's Blue Midnight album in 1964. Nat King Cole also recorded L-O-V-E in Italian, French, German and Japanese. I wanted to make a love offering for Valentine's Day. This seems a goody http://conservativeweasel.blogspot.com.au/2012/02/love-nat-king-cole.html

Proposed citizenship reform is revealed to be a fad which does not address issues. The so called reform is to have new citizens competent in English. But the issue is law breaking among new immigrants, not bad grammar.

A Californian writer, Richard Stockton, posts a series of lies about Australia's history regarding Aboriginals. Among his claims is one that the "stolen generations" began in 1830's. In fact, ten people have not been identified as 'stolen' since 1788. Everyone born in  1830 is now dead. Europeans are not to blame for that. Diseases that vectored from Europe were terrible. But settlers often tried to care for and help Aboriginals and the reason why any Aboriginal culture is known today is because some early settlers and missionaries tried to help, not murder. But sadly, the Aboriginal industry of today exploits Aboriginal peoples for political ends, victimising Aboriginal peoples, even as that industry claims to help.

Michael Kroger was asked about this on Sky this morning. His answer was loyal and masterful. "I think the Turnbull government has been good. I have heard others talk about achievement, but the Abbott government followed from an ALP administration and they needed to make more changes. Turnbull followed a Liberal government and change wasn't needed."

Change wasn't needed. Except the Liberal Party were desperate to end Turnbull's undermining.

I posted on that and was told by one person that Turnbull was more popular now than Abbott ever was. I asked the person about their view. Turns out they don't like the Liberal Party. Turnbull is the leader for the Liberals if you don't like that party.

Oscar Pistorius acquitted of murder. A grave injustice has happened with this verdict, as yet incomplete. Pistorius murdered his girlfriend. He just wasn't convicted of it. Shades of OJ Simpson's unfair acquittal. Today is the anniversary of Steve Biko's death from an evil apartheid regime. Injustice is injustice for all time. One feels for Reeva's loved ones. A cohabiting couple must be assumed to be aware of each other's presence. A gun owner has a greater responsibility for the safe operation of the weapon. The argument that the prosecution could not prove so beyond a reasonable doubt is wrong. Had Oscar had less support, as with a normal person, he would not have been able to argue as he has. The evidence would have been deemed conclusive. It will be a complete disgrace if Pistorius ever participates in elite sport again, or gets less than a maximum sentence for manslaughter.

A reminder of the importance of saying 'no' to constitutionalised racism. Australia is culturally diverse and thrives from that diversity. Should Australia decide to separate Australians by race it won't address the needs of people in need, but will instead become a tool of division. There are no admirable apartheid regimes anywhere in the world or in history. Israel doesn't divide by race, but Palestine does. South Africa did. The Conservative Voice will similarly oppose any reintroduction of slavery. Even if the US Democrats, or ALP really want it. A reminder of what a 'Yes' vote in Scotland might mean .. The Queen could abdicate the Scottish throne in favour of Charles, while keeping the English Throne for William .. think about that. But more seriously, those who favour a 'yes' vote claim that the disadvantages are overstated. Precisely which disadvantages are acceptable?

Gillard faces a royal commission and lies about her memory of activity. One hopes that she is taken to task for lying. She corruptly created a slush fund from misappropriated money involving a Union employing stand over tactics to extort money from business. Some of that money was used to build her home. Yet there is no one ever who forgot getting caught for theft when they were young and naive. It becomes foundational to their character. And so it is with Gillard. A thief and liar. By way of contrast Arthur Sinodinos is fronting the corrupt body of the ICAC again. Sinodinos has not been accused of doing anything wrong, but is believed to be thought guilty by the ICAC of being a Liberal member. Mr Sinodinos, are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the Liberal Party?

Meanwhile incompetent State ALP Member Nick Lalich has posed next to a street named after him. A car park might have been more appropriate. Although the only reason why there are now some more car parks in his electorate is thanks to a campaign initiated by Dai Le. ALP leadership in NSW deny their constituents to force a PUP candidate into a campaign as an ALP member. That there is true colours that is. Meanwhile RACV in Victoria argues "And studies show that as soon as you increase capacity, that capacity is taken up by people driving more cars on those roads. Congestion does not ease." The argument is a furphy, people only drive one car at a time and they need sensible road management to make their experience better.

Obama's secret service is keen to catch them all as they tackle a Pikachu on the White House lawn. Gay activists complain after a straight couple agree to get married to win a prize of Rugby seats at a test. The activists argue that the wedding will trivialise gay marriage. The friends agree not to divorce for two years. Big Macs are the same size now as they were in 1970. However, a large number of products have become smaller so as to retain their supermarket price.
    From 2013
The Australian PM elect has not yet announced a ministry. Partly because a campaign against prospective industry Minister Sophie Mirabella has been successful, and her actual seat is in doubt. This is a tragedy because unlike Gillard or Wong, Mirabella has talent. The person who might defeat her is supported by a so called conservative independent who supported the left wing minority government and helped trash the political career of Nick Greiner. So naturally the press, in the interim,  are asking who or what will be the next ALP leader. Will it be from the corrupt ALP right in the form of Shorten, or from the corrupt ALP left in the form of Albanesi. It is in fact of no consequence, as both have the same policy of the other. Shorten will follow Gillard's lead regardless of what it is. Albo, as leader, will do what his mandate tells him. It is yet to be revealed what sweet nothings the mandate whispers. Some say it is Carbon Tax. Some say it is Gay marriage. Gillard opposed Gay marriage, but Shorten can be his own man, as soon as he works out what she really meant. Apparently the mandate isn't Tim Matherson and so the press have many questions they want answered, and are increasingly irritated Abbott hasn't told them yet.

Also, there is leadership speculation in the US. Some say Obama is President. Obama is taking the lead from Putin. At first the press had thought Obama was dithering as over a hundred thousand people have died and millions have been made refugees in Syria. Clinton, who had a similar experience in Rwanda before he learned bombing could be ineffective in former Yugoslavia has given a lead to Obama. In order to be assertive, Obama wants to bomb something. So, in a masterclass display of dithering, Obama asked for permission to bomb Syria. But time passes, people die, a Christian village with the world's oldest Christian church has fallen to rebels (the CIA labels them Al-Qaeda, but the press know they are sensitive to leaks, so they call them rebels) and Obama is agreeable to a brokered position by Putin. This puts Russia in the box seat of negotiations between Iran and the US on nuclear issues. So the US President has abrogated US policy to Russia. Which is just as well, as it turns out that the weapons available to the Rebels include the high tech weapons stolen by Al-Qaeda at Benghazi last year. Confused? Think of it as a cancelled episode of Glee.

Most of these athletes have trained for 10 or more years to get to the pros – and for most it’s over quickly. They’ve had a quick taste and are out the door before they become addicted. But for athletes who have managed to beat the odds and stay in the sports spotlight for many years, our final bow can feel a little too final. Kobe Bryant (20 years), Derek Jeter (19 years), John Stockton (19 years), Jack Nicklaus (25 years), Mark Messier (26 years), Nolan Ryan (27 years), Gordie Howe (34 years), Pele (22 years), me (20 years) and many others with double-digit years in the gladiatorial arena are relatively young when we retire, usually in our 30s or 40s. Which is when we ask ourselves the existential question: who am I now?

An Interview with Ai Addyson-Zhang - Entrepreneurial Social Media Educator | Inside Higher Ed      Cache   Translate Page
Thanks to Dr. Ai Addyson-Zhang for taking the time to participate in this interview. For more information about Ai's work as a digital learning consultant and educator, please visit her website.

"Using social media to bridge the gap between teaching and practice" according to Eric Stoller, higher education thought-leader, consultant, writer, and speaker.

    Photo: Inside Higher Ed (Blog)

Dr. Ai Addyson-Zhang is an Associate Professor of Public Relations at Stockton University and a Digital Learning Consultant, Blogger, Speaker, and Live Streamer.

Keeping up with everything that Ai is doing within the education space is almost a full-time job in itself. She is a top writer on Medium and has recently been featured in Forbes

Emojis, for example, have almost become a default language to today’s students...

ALL eyes may have been on Sir Mo Farah as he created Great North Run history by becoming the first male runner to win the race for five years in succession. But each of the tens of thousands of people following in his wake had their own personal triumphs too – some having overcome adversity, others trying to better their records. All were enjoying the spirit of the day, while raising money for countless good causes.A capacity field took to the streets of South Tyneside, for the 13.1-mile run from Newcastle to South Shields, with the the 38th staging of the Great North Run forming the centrepiece of a packed weekend of athletics. The weekend also featured the Great North City Games, incorporating a new elite mile race in Stockton, and the Junior Mini Great North Run, which is the biggest children’s run in the UK with more than 8,500 entrants. After the Bishop of York The Right Reverend John Sentamu blessed the track, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Ingrid Kristiansen and Rosa Mota fired the starting gun, along with Kathrine Switzer, who defied convention to become the first woman ever to race in a marathon when she competed in Boston in 1967.The wheelchair races were followed by the elite races and a solid phalanx of runners. The Red Arrows, which have become synonymous with the event, put on a spectacular show as the runners pounded across the Tyne Bridge.Running clubs from throughout the region were represented, while many others turned out in a colourful array of fancy dress. There were pantomime animals of all descriptions, a Rubic cube, a giant telephone, Roman legionnaires, a team of The Incredibles and a Jesus lookalike with his cross. Great North Run legend Colin Bergin-Plews, known as Pink Dress Man, donned an even more elaborate frock this year, featuring selfies taken with runners over the years. Celebrities taking part included singer-songwriter Olly Murs racing alongside his sister, Fay.Also participating were Emmerdale’s Chelsea Halfpenny, comedian Ross Noble and River Cottage chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.In the ranks were the mums of South Shields couple Chloe Rutherford, 17, and Liam Curry, 19, who were among 22 people were killed in the terrorist attack at the Manchester Arena last May.Lisa Rutherford and Caroline Curry ran for The Together Forever Trust to support talented youngsters in sports and art. Bishop Auckland’s Scarlett Moffatt, of Gogglebox and Saturday Night Takeaway fame, pulled out of the race at the last minute. The star had pledged to raise money for the AngelTrust. Among the local heroes running the course was Alex Oliver, who was taking time off from his role as head coach at Brandon Boxing Club to complete his fifth Great North Run.Alex has built the County Durham club up from humble beginnings to almost 150 members, offering 20 classes a week to the community, and is known widely for its inclusivity. An event spokesperson said: “There were over 43,600 finishers, making it the biggest-ever Simplyhealth Great North Run.”
