World Clean Up Day 15 September 2018      Cache   Translate Page
The biggest civic action in the history of our planet, the World Cleanup Day, will take place on 15 September. On this day, millions of people from 150 countries will come together to take a step towards a cleaner world and draw attention to the global waste problem.

The biggest civic action in the world started in Estonia in 2008 and will be overseen from Estonia on 15 September. This means that we have the chance to make Estonia bigger than ever before in just one day.

Come along and join the cleanup action!

Find the nearest pile of rubbish, take some bin bags and gloves with you, and clean it up. Even the smallest contribution helps! You will find the contact details of the teams in your country at www.worldcleanupday.org/contact/

World Clean Up Day 15 September 2018

●    The World Cleanup Day will be held on 15 September 2018.
●    The biggest civic action in the world started in Estonia in 2008 and will be overseen from Estonia on 15 September. Approximately 150 countries will start cleaning up the Earth on the same day under the leadership of Estonia.
●    Let’s Do It World Cleanup Day is part of the Estonia 100 programme and is the biggest gift from Estonians to the world.
●    The World Cleanup Day will follow the Sun around the world – the cleanup will start at 10 am in New Zealand and end 36 hours later in Hawaii. The action will kick off on 14 September at 11 pm Estonian time.
●    The headquarters of the World Cleanup Day will be based in Tallinn and the results of the action, information, TV broadcasts, etc. from all over the world will be gathered there. The global TV broadcast will be hosted from the headquarters in Tallinn and shared all over the planet.
●    Millions of people will come out in support of cleaner nature, with an aim to take a step towards a cleaner world together and draw attention to the global problem of waste and seek possible solutions.
●    In Estonia, the cleanup action will focus on forests, beaches, lake shores and river banks.

Facts about the waste problem

●    According to the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), ca 4 billion tons of waste is generated every year, of which ca 1.6 billion tons  is household waste.
●    3.5 billion people in the world have no access to waste management systems and the waste ends up in nature, incl. in oceans, or it is burnt.
●    According to the Global Waste Management Outlook, hundreds of millions of tons of illegal waste ends up in nature every year and from there makes its way to the oceans. 80% of the waste floating in oceans is of mainland origin.
●    This is why the problem of waste is just as critical for developed countries as it is for developing ones. Although several associations monitor waste in different regions of the world, insufficient information about the quantities and locations of the waste prevents dealing with the problem efficiently.

The story of the World Cleanup Day

●    A group of people, including Rainer Nõlvak, Toomas Trapido, Henri Laupmaa and Kadri Allikmäe, sat down together in August 2007 and came up with the idea to clean Estonia from waste in one day. Ahti Heinla, Tiina Urm, Tatjana Lavrova, Eva Truuverk and Anneli Ohvril joined them later. 620 volunteers and over 500 organisations in Estonia helped make Let’s Do It! a success.
●    More than 50 thousand people cleaned up over 10 thousand tons of waste on 3 May 2008. It would have taken the state years and cost 22.5 million euros. But it got done in one day and only cost half a million euros (mostly the cost of waste handling by waste management companies).
●    The first country to join Estonia’s initiative was Lithuania, which carried out a supporting cleanup day with Estonia (with a couple of thousands of volunteers on 3 May 2008). Latvia carried out a cleanup action in autumn; Slovenia, Portugal, Serbia and many others followed suit.
●    Almost 20 million people from more than a hundred countries of the world have cleaned up their territories at different times based on the Let’s Do It! model.
●    Maximum numbers of cleanup day participants: Latvia (210,000), Lithuania (250,000), Portugal (100,000), Slovenia (270,000), Romania (250,000), Albania (281,000), Hungary (200,000), Bulgaria (375,000), Ukraine (500,000), India (54,000), the Philippines (28,000), etc.

Writing content about blockchain - Upwork      Cache   Translate Page
We need help with research, finding sources and writing content related to blockchain. These are the topics we need to cover, we expect at least 500 words with credible sources (not Wikipedia or Google Search :)) for each topic:
1) Danger of following wrong trends in technology
1.1 herd instinct (if others are using it it must be cool)
1.2 even if it might not be ok I will use this tech because:
1.2.1 it's too comfortable
1.2.2 I can't fix it anyway (Uber unfair competition)
1.2.3 others will still keep doing it (using plastic stuff)
1.3 this is cool because it's fighting the 'system' (shutting down nuclear power plants in Germany)
2) wrong point of view or bad understanding lead to misguided expectations for technologies
2.1 blockchain will fix everything
2.2 decentralisation will fix disparities in our society
2.3 examples of 'missed' advantages / applications of technologies
3) Market has to be wripe / ready - examples of services or technologies developed too soon (some examples: airports, first electric cars (1900s)
4) Blockchain is misused - how blockchain is not being used up to its full potential but mostly just for fundraising
5) True advantages of blockchain - immutability, determinism, transfer of value
6)Blockers of adoption of blockchain technology - reasons why blockchain is not used right now (mass adaptation, scaling issues, energy with PoW, very few blockchain projects/companies that truly utilize blockchain advantages)
7) The role of web 3.0 (evolution of the web from 1.0 to 3.0, what 3.0 can do that others couldn't, how it will help blockchain, what are the issues/challenges of web 3.0)
8) Private vs public blockchain, permissionless vs permissioned blockchain
9) Existing blockchain solutions that work today (all types and combinations mentioned in 8))
10) Future development of blockchain
11) Exciting tech of the future

Qual. Europee. L’Italia all’esordio piega la Polonia.

VANJA SKY - BAD PENNY (Ruf, 2018)      Cache   Translate Page

A Carpet Manufacturer’s Sustainability Story      Cache   Translate Page

Interface set a zero waste goal in the 1990s, when basically no one else was. Now, the company is ahead of its 2020 target and is onto its next sustainable mission.

Flooring products manufacturer Interface set a zero waste goal back in the 1990s, when almost no one was doing it. Now, the company is ahead of its 2020 target and is onto a new, more aggressive mission.

And, in between, the global company that did almost $997 million in net sales last year has made other disruptive moves, including cutting loose from the rest of the carpet industry in its sustainability direction.

When carpet manufacturers collectively fought a California law requiring that it recycle its wasted products, Interface left its trade association and hired a lobbyist to push to keep the law intact.

On a smaller-scale project, the company has worked with one of its suppliers and small villages in the Philippines and Africa to see that fishing nets are pulled from the ocean and get a second life as fabric in Interface’s carpet tiles.

“One of our overarching goals for almost 25 years is what we call ‘Mission Zero:’ to have zero negative impact by 2020,” says Erin Meezan, chief sustainability officer at Interface. “Since then, we’ve reduced waste to landfill by 91 percent. We decreased water usage by 88 percent. We have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 96 percent. And we have shifted from fossil-derived energy to renewable sources, including landfill gas to provide process heat for manufacturing.”

“In 2016, we looked at our zero emission metric and saw we were getting close to what we set out to do a little early. We thought maybe it was time to challenge ourselves more,” she adds.

The company’s next mission is called “Climate Takeback” and involves implementing business practices to go carbon neutral and ultimately carbon negative, storing more carbon dioxide (C02) than it releases.

It has begun this initiative through projects like installing green rooves on factories and launching a carbon-negative product made from bio-based materials.

Now, Interface has a multipronged sustainability strategy.

“We work toward good internal operations in order to be more efficient. We engage the supply chain to come up with recycled materials. And we try to engage customers, so they appreciate recycled content and are also part of closing that loop by returning products to us,” says Meezan.

The latter focus has been a challenge, she says, because, “Now, you can toss flooring in a lot of markets. We want those materials back, so we’ve been in favor of creating industrywide programs to put infrastructure in place to see that this can happen.”

This is why Interface got behind California’s Carpet Stewardship bill, which passed in 2017, mandating that carpet manufacturers hit a target of 24 percent carpet recycling by 2020, and then CalRecycle would set higher goals beyond 2020.

“Almost all of the industry fought this bill except for Interface,” says Heidi Sanborn, executive director of the National Stewardship Action Council. “But Interface worked hand-in-hand with us on the bill language. What made them unique is they are putting money and energy into sustainability like no other company in the carpet industry. I think it was the deal breaker—we got this bill passed largely because Interface got fully engaged. It was the industry saying, ‘this is a problem,’” adds Sanborn.

In 2011, Aquafil, which supplies yarn to Interface, established a chemical regeneration plant that can transform nylon waste into new products.

The carpet manufacturer has partnered with the company to use fishing nets Interface collects in the Philippines and Africa through its Net-Works project. All the recovered material is sent to Aquafil in Slovenia to be regenerated into brand new yarn.

The way it works is nylon waste is fed into a chemical plant where high temperature and a catalyst allow polymers to be broken down and transformed into their original building blocks. The polymers are extruded and spun into yarn.

“The interesting thing about this process is that it can be done an infinite number of times,” says Giulio Bonazzi, CEO and president of Aquafil. “So, nylon 6 waste [fishing nets, old carpet, industrial waste, etc.] always has the potential to be used as raw material and be turned into ECONYL regenerated nylon, with no compromise in quality.”

“This initiative is about a supply chain paradigm shift to a more circular and inclusive model. What would be waste is used to produce beautiful products instead of polluting the seas,” notes Bonazzi.
