Adrian Peterson trains in Houston during the offseason Marshawn Lynch Jersey (http://www.seahawkscheapstore.com/marshawn-lynch-jersey-cheap) , even opening a megagym in his adopted hometown a couple of years ago. So it’s no surprise the star running back would love to play his 12th season in Houston. Peterson, 33, mentioned the Texans and four other teams as possible fits in a recent appearance on ESPN’s NFL Live. “You know obviously I’ve mentioned Houston a couple of times,” Peterson said. “I feel like Green Bay wouldn’t be a bad look as well. Carolina. There’s some options out there. You know Miami. Down there in [Los Angeles]. That would be a nice look, too, with Todd Gurley. You see around the league they have a two-back system. Guys are not really not pounding the ball 20, 30 times a game, so I think that leaves the door open for a couple of opportunities for me.” Peterson also recently said he would be open to a return to New Orleans. Peterson has posted his workout videos, hoping teams take notice. In truth Durham Smythe Jersey (http://www.dolphinscheapstore.com/durham-smythe-jersey-cheap) , Peterson likely would have interest in any team that shows interest in him. Drew Brees passed for 376 yards and two touchdowns, and the New Orleans Saints held off Carolina’s late comeback bid to seal a 31-26 victory in their NFC wild-card game on Sunday. The Panthers had a first down on the Saints 26-yard line with 58 seconds left, but heavy pressure by All-Pro defensive end Cameron Jordan a couple plays later induced an intentional grounding penalty on Carolina quarterback Cam Newton, making it third-and-25 on the Saints 34 and a required 10-second runoff left 22 seconds on the clock. After an incompletion in the end zone on third down, Vonn Bell sacked Newton on a safety blitz, ensuring the Saints (12-5) swept all three meetings with Carolina (11-6) this season, in addition to winning their first playoff game in four seasons. Brees’ touchdowns went for 80-yards to Ted Ginn and 9 yards to tight end Josh Hill. Fullback Zach line and running back Alvin Kamara each ran for short touchdowns. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) – Blake Bortles put together one decent drive all day, doing as much with his legs as his arm Malcolm Mitchell Jersey (http://www.patriotscheapstore.com/malcolm-mitchell-jersey-cheap) , and the defensive-minded Jacksonville Jaguars eked out an ugly and sometimes unwatchable 10-3 victory against the Buffalo Bills in an AFC wild-card game Sunday. In the postseason for the first time since January 2008, the third-seeded Jaguars (11-6) advanced to play at No. 2 seed Pittsburgh next week. The sixth-seeded Bills (9-8) will head home after ending the longest, current playoff drought in North American professional sports. Bortles was a big reason Jacksonville won the game and a big reason it was so close. This was far from a passing clinic. It was more like a painful exercise in overcoming poor passing. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Marcus Mariota led Tennessee to three second-half touchdowns, incredibly throwing one of his TD passes to himself , and the Titans rallied from a 21-3 deficit to beat the Kansas City Chiefs 22-21 on Saturday for their first playoff win in 14 years. Mariota threw for 205 yards and two scores, including the 22-yard go-ahead strike to Eric Decker with just over six minutes left that ushered the Titans into the divisional round of the playoffs. They’ll head to New England or Pittsburgh next week. Derrick Henry had a career-high 156 yards rushing and another score for Tennessee (10-7), while a defense that was fileted by Alex Smith and the Chiefs (10-7) during the first half pitched a shutout in the second half – dooming the Kansas City franchise to another humiliating postseason defeat. LOS ANGELES (AP) – Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons showed the upstart Los Angeles Rams what playoff poise is all about. Ryan passed for 218 yards and hit Julio Jones for an 8-yard touchdown with 5:48 to play, and the defending NFC champion Falcons advanced from the wild-card round with a methodical 26-13 victory over the Rams on Saturday night. Devonta Freeman rushed for an early score and Matt Bryant kicked four field goals for the Falcons (11-6) Brandon Coleman Jersey (http://www.saintscheapstore.com/brandon-coleman-jersey-cheap) , who spoiled the Rams’ first playoff game in 13 years while showing off the postseason poise they earned from last season’s journey to the Super Bowl. Atlanta never trailed at the Coliseum while winning playoff games in consecutive seasons for the first time in franchise history. The Falcons advanced to face the top-seeded Eagles on Saturday in Philadelphia. NBA LOS ANGELES (AP) – Brandon Ingram had 20 points and seven assists, and the Los Angeles Lakers snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 132-113 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday night. Julius Randle had 15 points and nine rebounds in this sixth straight start, while Lonzo Ball finished with 13 points, 10 assists and six rebounds. Los Angeles led by as many as 26 points – its biggest margin this season – and enjoyed a strong shooting night. The Lakers made 55.8 percent of their field goals, and shot 44.4 percent from 3-point range. Even free throws went in for the Lakers, who came into Sunday as the worst team in the league in that category. Los Angeles made 20 of 25. COLLEGE BASKETBALL COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Keita Bates-Diop scored a career-high 32 points, and Ohio State stunned No. 1 Michigan State 80-64 on Sunday. The overachieving Buckeyes put together an electrifying 12-0 run to finish the first half and kept their foot on the gas to give first-year coach Chris Holtmann a signature win. Ohio State (13-4, 4-0 Big Ten) won for its third straight in taking down the best team it is likely to see this season. The mistake-prone Spartans (15-2 Art Shell Jersey (http://www.raiderscheapstore.com/art-shell-jersey-cheap) , 3-1) lost for the first time in the last 15 games, dating back to a seven-point loss to then-No. 1 Duke on Nov. 14. GOLF KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) – A new year brought out the best in Dustin Johnson, who powered his way to an 8-under 65 and an eight-shot victory in the Sentry Tournament of Champions. In a field that featured the top five players in the world, Johnson made a strong opening statement that a No. 1 ranking he has held for nearly a year might be difficult to take away. Johnson stretched a two-shot lead to six shots at the turn, then delivered the biggest moment of the week with a drive on the par-4 12th hole that stopped 6 inches from the cup for a tap-in eagle. He also drove the par-4 14th hole. He finished at 24-under 268. The eight-shot margin of victory was his largest ever, and it was one short of the tournament record set by David Duval since this event moved to Kapalua in 1999. Jordan Spieth also won by eight shots in 2016. Football Jerseys Wholesale (http://www.officialusafootballs.com)

NEW YORK -- Mets closer Bobby Parnell was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesda      Cache   Translate Page
NEW YORK -- Mets closer Bobby Parnell was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a partially torn elbow ligament and will be sidelined until at least late May. Fred Warner Jersey . Parnell will be out much longer if it turns out he needs surgery. But first, he will try resting for two weeks before beginning a throwing program that could last up to a month, general manager Sandy Alderson said. If that doesnt heal Parnells right elbow sufficiently, he likely would require surgery. "Its conceivable, I guess, that we would cut that off earlier than four weeks if we thought he wasnt making progress," Alderson said. "Theres always the risk that it will completely tear. But because of the location, the doctors were comfortable with the conservative approach." The move was made retroactive to April 1. New York selected the contract of veteran right-hander Kyle Farnsworth from Triple-A Las Vegas and added him to a suspect bullpen that flopped on opening day. Alderson said some of the clubs starters at Las Vegas will pitch out of the bullpen over the next couple of months to get accustomed to that role. That probably will not include top prospect Noah Syndergaard. "We have some great arms and at some point it will be important for us to see them," Alderson said. In other moves, second baseman Daniel Murphy was placed on paternity leave and the Mets recalled infielder Wilmer Flores from Las Vegas. Flores started at second against Washington left-hander Gio Gonzalez. Chris Young, who missed the opener with what was described as a minor right quadriceps strain, made his first start for the Mets but never came to bat. Young played the first inning in left field before he was lifted for Andrew Brown in the top of the second. Three innings later, the Mets announced Young left the game with tightness in his right quad. Young joined the team as a free agent in the off-season, signing a $7.25 million, one-year contract. Murphy is expected back in time for Thursdays matinee. He and his wife, Victoria, welcomed a baby boy named Noah on Monday. To make room for Farnsworth on the 40-man roster, the Mets sent right-hander Ryan Reid outright to the minors. Parnell threw 25 pitches in the season opener Monday against the Nationals and blew a save, giving up Denard Spans tying double in the ninth. New York lost 9-7 in 10 innings. It was the right-handers first save opportunity since a neck injury that eventually required surgery sidelined him for the final two months last season. Parnell complained of tightness in his right elbow after the game. The Mets said he was examined Tuesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery, had an MRI and was diagnosed with a partial tear of the right medial collateral ligament. The team said he received a plasma injection. The Mets already are without All-Star ace Matt Harvey, expected to miss the entire season following Tommy John surgery Oct. 22 for a partial tear of his right ulnar collateral ligament. Jose Valverde, a three-time All-Star, takes over as the closer. The 36-year-old right-hander has 286 saves in an 11-year big league career with Arizona, Houston and Detroit. "I feel bad for Bobby. What I want is for Bobby to be OK," Valverde said. "I want this guy to come back soon. I want him closing games for the Mets."           FL-Gov: Florida Chamber Of Commerce Poll Has Andrew Gillum (D) Beating Ron DeSantis (R) 47-43      Cache   Translate Page

Some good news today out of Florida:

Democrat Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum is leading Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) by 4 points in Florida’s gubernatorial race, according to a new Florida Chamber of Commerce Poll released Wednesday.

Gillum leads DeSantis 47 percent to 43 percent in the statewide poll. The Democrat also leads his Republican opponent in a major media markets across the state except Jacksonville, according to the poll.

But despite Democrats having an advantage in voter registration in a state that is led by Republicans, the poll showed 48 percent of likely voters in Florida believe the state is headed in the right direction, while 37 percent answered otherwise.

Gillum, who is backed by progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), unexpectedly defeated former Rep. Gwen Graham (D-Fla.) in the state’s Democratic primary last month.

DeSantis also easily defeated Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam last month in the state’s Republican gubernatorial primary after being backed by President Trump in the race.

However, the president’s support is not guaranteed to boost the Republican’s electoral prospects.

In other Florida news, it’s still a tight one in the U.S. Senate race:

Governor Rick Scott is challenging longtime Florida Senator Bill Nelson.

Right now our poll shows Scott with a slight lead. But results also show that the undecided voters will likely determine who wins.

In the poll, we asked, "If the election for United States Senator from Florida were today, and you were filling out your ballot right now, who would you vote for? Governor Rick Scott received 46 percent of the votes, while Senator Bill Nelson received 44 percent. But 7 percent of the voters were undecided.

For approval ratings, Scott was also in the lead. We asked, "Do you approve or disapprove of the job Rick Scott is doing as Governor? Of the voters, 48 percent approve, 40 percent disapprove, and 12 percent are not sure.

For Nelson, 40 percent approve, 35 percent disapprove, and 25 percent are not sure.

Let’s have the Blue Wave re-elect Nelson and make Gillum governor. Click below to donate and get involved with their campaigns:

Top storyline for each Week 2 NFL game      Cache   Translate Page
Since 2007, less than 11 percent of the teams that have started a given season 0-2 ended up making the playoffs that year. This means 15 squads are practically in elimination mode heading into Week 2.That includes the New York Giants taking on the Dallas Cowboys as well as the Detroit Lions having to travel to San Francisco against the 49ers following a disastrous Week 1 loss to the Jets. Can the Cowboys’ offense rebound from last week’s struggles? Is this a get-right game for the 49ers?Over in the AFC, the Kansas City Chiefs head to Pittsburgh after a brilliant offensive showing in Week 1. Can Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill be stopped? Meanwhile, the Jacksonville Jaguars will be looking to avenge their AFC Championship loss to New England last January. These are among the top storylines for each Week 2 NFL game.Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals: Continuing momentum from Week 1 Both seen as a few notches below Pittsburgh in the NFC North, Baltimore and Cincinnati enter Week 2 with an opportunity to gain
Giants S: Prescott throwing means ‘better chance of winning’      Cache   Translate Page
The New York Giants feel pretty good about being able to stop Dak Prescott. At least, that’s the take from Giants safety Landon Collins. Collins said Wednesday that the team is putting a lot of importance on stopping Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott in Sunday night’s game, as the Giants feel like they can contain Prescott. While this is pretty basic gameplanning, Collins’s remarks come in the aftermath of an extremely poor performance on Prescott’s part, as he threw for just 170 yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Of course, the Giants will be facing a motivated Elliott and it’s not unreasonable to think Prescott will be very eager to bounce back in this one.
Week 1 takeaways for the New York Giants      Cache   Translate Page
The New York Giants fell to the Jacksonville Jaguars 20-15 at the Meadowlands Sunday afternoon and the offense failed to produce when it mattered most. The Giants have arguably one of the most talented rosters offensively on paper, but the biggest takeaway from Week 1 was the offensive line play. After signing offensive tackle Nate Solder this offseason, New York felt that they might have finally solidified the O-line, although this was not the case on Sunday. New York was forced to move last years left tackle, Ereck Flowers, to the right side to help make the former New England Patriot’s transition smoother. However, both sides of the line were dominated by the stingy Jaguars front seven as Myles Jack and Yannick Ngakoue had their way with the Giants all day. Pro Football Focus gave Flowers an overall grade of 48.3 while Solder had the best ranking on the Giants line with 67.1. Rookie guard Will Hernandez had an average debut for the Big Blue and, at times, looked like a true rookie. Eli Manning had virtuall

Trash talk appeared to be the talking point on Wednesday for the New England Patriots.           TIGER-CATS SIGN CHAD OWENS      Cache   Translate Page

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced Tuesday that international wide receiver Chad Owens has been added to the team’s practice roster.

Owens, 36, started three regular season games in 2017 with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, posting 17 receptions for 235 yards and a touchdown, while adding four carries for 32 yards. He attended 2018 training camp with the Roughriders before being released June 9.

The Honolulu, Hawaii native has appeared in 105 career CFL games since 2009, amassing 16,698 all-purpose yards and 37 total touchdowns with the Montreal Alouettes (2009), Toronto Argonauts (2010-15), Tiger-Cats (2016) and Roughriders (2017). Owens has 521 career receptions for 6,217 yards with 27 receiving touchdowns, and 29 carries for 172 rushing yards. He has also returned 365 punts for 4,027 yards (11.0 avg.) with six touchdowns, 240 kickoffs for 5,479 yards (22.8 avg.) with one touchdown, and 19 missed field goals for 803 yards (42.3 avg.) with three touchdowns.

In 2012, Owens was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player and won a Grey Cup with Toronto after setting a league record for combined yards in a season (3,862) and leading the league in receiving yards (1,328). The 5-8, 180-pound product of the University of Hawaii is a three-time CFL All-Star and has been named an East Division All-Star five times during his seven-year career.

Owens, who was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round, 185th overall, in the 2005 NFL Draft, suited up in six games over five seasons (2005-07), returning 13 punts for 62 yards and five kickoffs for 94 yards. He also spent time in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Luxembourg

American forces had reached Luxembourg on September 9, 1944. Luxembourgers, usually reserved by nature, were unusually exuberant the following days. The ‘Luxemburger Wort’ of Tuesday, September 12, 1944 reported about the jubilant events in a lengthy article entitled:

Den zwéten Dâg vun onser Liberatio'n / Militär- a Stâdtmusek um Plessdarm
[The Joyous City of Luxembourg.

 The article concluded with:

Then late that evening our first newspaper was published. It was a tough job. No electricity, no water and many broken-down machines. We stood there at the light of two candles. We did it anyway. The boys in our firm worked, that it was a pleasure. At nine o’clock we were ready. Outside, the people fought over the paper. It was still wet from the ink. The first Luxembourg newspaper since May 10, 1940.

2000 NLCS MVP- Mets Pitcher: Mike Hampton (2000)      Cache   Translate Page
Michael William Hampton was born on September 9, 1972 in Brooksville, Florida. The five foot ten left handed pitcher was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 6th round of the 1990 draft . Hampton had a modest minor league career, winning a high of 13 games (13-8) with a 3.12 ERA at A ball San Bernardino in 1992.

In 1993 he made the Seattle staff out of Spring Training. He debuted in Detroit allowing four runs to the Tigers & taking a loss in four innings of work. That day the Mariners lost 20-3. On April 23rd he earned his first big league win, it was a middle relief appearance against the A.L. New York team. He remained on the staff through July going 1-3 with a save & two holds with a 9.53 ERA. He was sent down to AA Jacksonville, where he went 6-4 the rest of the year. In the off season he was traded to the Houston Astros along with Mike Felder in exchange for Eric Anthony.

He spent six seasons in Houston gradually developing into a top starter. Hampton kept his ERA under four every year with the Astros although he did give up a large number of hits & walks throughout his career. He gradually increased his victories each season, going from nine in 1995 to ten in 1996. That year he was 10- 10, striking out 101 batters pitching in 160 innings, while posting a 3.59 ERA.

In 1997 he won 15 games (15-10) second on the first place Astros staff to Daryl Kile (19-7). Hampton posted a 3.83 ERA, throwing a pair of shut outs, striking out 139 batters while pitching 223 innings (9th in the NL). His 34 starts & seven complete games were both third most in the league. On his down side he allowed 217 hits (4th in the league) 77 walks (6th in the league) & 95 earned runs (8th in the league). In the NLDS against the Atlanta Braves, he took the loss in Game #2 allowing six runs in 4.2 innings.

In 1998 he was 11-7 getting to the NLDS again , this time losing to the NL Champion San Diego Padres. He earned no decision in the series. By 1999 he was one of the league’s top pitchers, leading the NL with 22 wins, and a .846 winning percentage. He was third in the NL with a 2.90 ERA, striking out a career high 177 batters (9th in the NL) in 239 innings pitched (4th in the NL). He threw three complete games with two shut outs.

He was the Sporting News Pitcher of the Year, coming in runner up to Arizona's Randy Johnson for the Cy Young Award. Hampton made his first ALL Star appearance that year as well. He was one of two twenty game winners on the Astros staff, the other being Jose Lima (21-10). The Astros got to another post season but exited in the first round once again. Hampton was always a good hitting pitcher and was one of the best of his era. In 1999 he hit .311 with seven walks and 10 RBIs.

Houston took advantage of Hampton's big season; with it being the final year of his contract they put him on the trade block. In order to not pay out a big contract they traded him to the New York Mets in December 1999. In the deal the Astros insisted the Mets take along Derek Bell who had been nothing but trouble for Houston. In exchange the Mets gave up Octavio Dotel & Roger Cedeno. He may have had a short career in New York but the one season he pitched here, was an important one. He was the last piece Bobby Valentine needed in order to get his team to the World Series.

Hampton’s 2000 season didn’t start out so well, on Opening Day in a game played in Japan, he lost to the Chicago Cubs, allowing two runs over five innings pitched. He started out the year at 0-3 before getting his first win, which came at Shea Stadium on April 18th against the Milwaukee Brewers. In May he won four straight game going 4-0 in the month. In the first three of those games he allowed just one run in 18 innings of work. He tossed one complete game while going into the 8th inning or beyond three times.

On May 20th he came to bat with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 4th inning facing Omar Dahl with the Mets down 1-0. He singled driving in the first two runs, in what turned out to be a 15-8 Mets win over the Chicago Cubs. Later in the year on August 7th, he helped his own caude & drove in two more Mets runs with a single in Houston, leading to a 6-5 win.

On June 25th he pitched a five hit shutout at Shea Stadium, striking out nine Pittsburgh Pirates. He won another three straight from there into July. On July 9th he pitched seven innings of shutout ball, to beat the AL New York team 2-0 in the subway series at Shea. On July 27th he pitched another complete game in the second game of a double header, beating the Montreal Expos. From there he went on another four game win streak throughout the month of August, topped off by an eight inning, three hitter against the Arizona Diamondback.

He was 13-7 entering September but had a rough 0-3 start to the September pennant race. On September 2nd he pitched into the 9th inning but took a tough 2-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. In his next start he pitched into the 8th inning but the Mets were shut out by Vicente Padilla & the Phillies. On September 23rd he beat the Phillies & then in his last start of the regular season, he pitched five shutout innings to beat the Montreal Expos at Shea Stadium.

He finished up the year at 15-10, second on the Mets staff to Al Leiter's 16 wins & tenth most wins in the NL. He struck out 151 batters, also second on the staff to Leiter’s 200 strike outs. Hampton led the club in ERA 3.10 (the 5th best in the NL) innings pitched (217) complete games (3) & one shutout. For the second year in a row he also allowed the fewest HRs per nine innings (0.414) in the National League. At the plate he hit .274 driving in 8 runs, leading all NL pitchers.

Post Season: In the NLDS he opened up the Series in San Francisco but gave up five runs taking the loss to the Giants. Hampton made up for it & secured his place in Mets history in the NLCS. In the series opener at St. Louis' Busch Stadium, Hampton pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just six hits while striking out four Cardinals. The Mets took the Opener 6-2. He saved his best outing of the year, for the pennant clinching Game #5 at Shea Stadium.

Hampton went the distance pitching a three hit complete game shutout, striking out eight Cardinals in front a wild sold out, Shea Stadium crowd. (centerfieldmaz was in attendance that historic night) It ranks as one of the best Mets post season pitching performances in the clubs history. He got the last out when Cardinals pinch hitter Rick Wilkins flew out to centerfielder Jay Payton. As the Mets celebrated, Hampton was lifted off the ground by Mike Piazza as the Mets advanced to the World Series. Hampton was voted the MVP of the NLCS.

In the World Series, he took the loss in Game #2 giving up four runs, on eight hits & five walks in six innings pitched of the 6-5 Mets loss. After the 2000 season he upset Met fans by signing with the Colorado Rockies.

The air in Colorado made him an even better hitter; he hit 10 HRs & batted over .300 in two seasons playing there. He won 14 games in the Rocky Mountains but lost 13 and had an ERA of 5.14. Next season he battled injuries and his ERA ballooned over six as he lost 15 games while only winning seven.

He was traded to the Atlanta Braves in 2003 and went 14-8 with a 3.84 ERA getting to another post season. In the NLDS he pitched two games taking a 5-1 loss in the final Game #5 to the Chicago Cubs. That season he won the gold Glove Award, breaking Greg Maddox record of 13 straight.

In 2004 he was 13-9 posting a 4.28 ERA and got no decisions in two games pitched in the NLDS against Houston. In 2005 he had arm trouble and needed Tommy John surgery that September. He missed the entire 2006 season rehabbing his arm. In 2007 he returned but then tore an oblique muscle and had to miss the rest of that season as well. In April 2008 he was to make a highly anticipated return, but while warming up he strained a pectoral muscle & was placed on the DL. He finally returned almost three years later, in July of 2008.

In his first start he allowed six runs to the Phillies in Philadelphia, exiting after four innings. In his next start he allowed four runs in five innings of work. On August 5th he earned his first win in nearly three years, beating the San Francisco Giants. He would go 4-5 with a 4.85 ERA for Atlanta in 2008.

In 2009 he signed with his old team in Houston, taking the role as the number two starter behind the Astros; Roy Oswalt. He went 7-10 with an ERA of 4.07. By the end of the season he needed rotator cuff surgery and missed most of 2010, returning in September with the Arizona D-backs.

In his 16 year career he was 148-115 (249th most wins all time) with a 4.06 ERA. He struck out 1387 batters (226th all time) with 901 walks (157th most all time) in 2268 innings pitched over 409 games. Hampton made 355 starts (183rd all time) with nine shut outs & 21 complete games. He has given up 200 HRs with 1024 earned runs (212th all time most). Hampton has thrown 75 wild pitches (210 all time) Hampton is the only pitcher to win five Silver Slugger Awards.

Belichick compares Bortles to Deshaun Watson, Cam Newton      Cache   Translate Page
NFL coaches often share praise for upcoming opponents, but Bill Belichick might be giving Blake Bortles’ mobility too much credit. As the New England Patriots prepare for a Week 2 clash with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Belichick said he puts Bortles’ athleticism in the same category as Deshaun Watson and Cam Newton, per Ben Volin of the Boston Globe. That sure is something!Yes, Bortles has established himself as a decent runner. He’s recorded four straight seasons with 300-plus rushing yards, topping out at 419 as a rookie. But to group him with Newton — who has 4,378 yards and 55 touchdowns on the ground in his career — and Watson is a little much. The latter had 1,934 rushing yards in college and picked up 269 in only seven appearances as a rookie.Physically, Bortles is similar to Newton. But that’s about where the comparison ends.Troll on, Bill.

Tom Brady looks forward to big early test against Jacksonville      Cache   Translate Page
Subtitle:
Expects Jags ‘D’ to provide opposition

FOXBORO — The Patriots will tell you that every game counts the same.

It seems like they can feel the extra significance of this one, though.

Jacksonville, which held the Pats dead to rights in the fourth quarter of last year’s conference championship game, is looking to establish itself as the early AFC favorite.

The Pats are hoping to prove they’re still the team to beat, even after losing key pieces in the offseason.

Four days away from a Week 2 showdown with the Jaguars, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said he expects an “emotional environment” in Jacksonville.

“I think everyone, whenever you play some of the best teams, you want to see where you’re measured up to,” Brady said. “And that defense has been ranked very high all last year, and I could see why. We practiced against them. They were very good. They’ve got a lot of very talented players, some of the guys that are probably the best at their position. So, it’s going to be a great environment for football — 4:30 game, so everyone’s going to be watching. It should be a really great game for us to go out and see what we’re made of.”

The Patriots stormed back from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit in last year’s AFC title game to defeat the Jags. Brady hit Danny Amendola on a pair of touchdown passes in a thrilling 24-20 victory.

The stakes are much lower this time around, but Brady believes the Jags will provide a great early season test.

“They’ve got an incredible rush, great linebackers, great secondary,” Brady said. “It’s going to be very challenging, tough environment and we’ll see what we’re made of.”

The Patriots offense got the job done in Week 1 against the Texans, as Brady was kept clean in the pocket for most of the game. He found a rhythm with wide receiver Phillip Dorsett, completing all seven passes thrown in his direction. The running game was uninspiring, though, and the Pats didn’t threaten the Texans on the perimeter.

“I don’t think you’d expect to be perfect out there,” Brady said. “You just have to be better than the other team, especially early in the year, because you really don’t know what you’re made of. You don’t know really what the other teams are made of, you haven’t been able to study too much. It’s a very small sample size.”

This Week 2 matchup in Jacksonville will represent arguably the toughest challenge of the year for Brady and the offense.

“Defensively, all of the numbers kind of speak for themselves,” said Patriots coach Bill Belichick of the Jaguars. “They pretty much led the league in every category last year.”

Patriots now need rookie running back Sony Michel, who hopes to debut Sunday       Cache   Translate Page

FOXBORO — Somehow, wide receiver is no longer the thinnest position on the Patriots’ roster.

The Pats retained four capable ball-carriers entering the season, but only one, James White, remains fully healthy after Week 1.

Veteran Jeremy Hill was placed on injured reserve after suffering a torn ACL in the season opener. Although Rex Burkhead was on the field for the beginning of yesterday’s practice, he was listed as a non-participant due to a concussion. Burkhead was the team’s go-to runner against the Texans, and it’s unclear when he sustained the injury.

So what happens when the Pats face one of the league’s stingiest defenses in Jacksonville this Sunday?

Perhaps rookie Sony Michel can bail them out.

Drafted in the first round this past spring, Michel remains an unknown. He exited an Aug. 1 practice with a knee injury and didn’t return to the practice field until Aug. 27. Since then, he’s handled a limited workload.

“I’m doing everything they ask of me,” Michel said.

Because he sat out the entire month of August, Michel missed his opportunity to become acclimated to NFL speed and physicality. Whenever the Patriots throw him into the fire, it’ll be Michel’s first live action as a pro.

“You really can’t simulate a hit in practice, but you can work on other things — ball security, guys punching at the ball, doing everything full speed,” Michel said.

The Patriots need Michel now, especially if Burkhead cannot clear concussion protocol in time for the Week 2 showdown at the Jaguars.

If both Burkhead and Michel are inactive against the Jags, White and the recently signed Kenjon Barner, who, at 5-foot-9, 190 pounds also fits in the pass-catching back mold, would be the only active running backs. The team signed Kenneth Farrow to the practice squad yesterday. Either Farrow or undrafted rookie Ralph Webb should earn a promotion from the practice squad in the event that Burkhead and Michel can’t play.

Ideally, the Pats would turn Michel loose against the Jags. But the talented rookie is a critical piece of the team’s future, and the Pats won’t jeopardize that for a game in mid-September, even if it’s against the AFC runner-ups.

“I’m doing all I can do to prepare,” Michel said in his first interview since suffering the knee injury. “Whatever coach’s plan is, I don’t know what his plan is, but my mindset is prepare as if I’m playing.”

Provided he’s healthy, Michel figures to assume a prominent role at some point this season. He’s by far the most explosive player in the Pats backfield.

White is terrific on third downs, and Burkhead is a unique talent who can make an impact between the tackles and in the passing game. He’s previously been utilized as a complementary back, though, not the primary ball-carrier. Ditto for White.

Michel possesses all the traits to transform the offense. As a senior at Georgia, seven of Michel’s 16 rushing touchdowns came from 35-plus yards. In the Rose Bowl alone, he ripped off gains of 75, 38, 27 and 20 yards. He’s big enough to carry the ball between the tackles, too.

“He’s got some stout to him,” said Pats running backs coach Ivan Fears after the team drafted Michel. “Have you seen him yet? Have you met him? He’s got some stout to him. He’s not a little guy. He’s broad shouldered and about 215 (pounds), somewhere in that neighborhood. He’s a size player that can pound it away and make some things happen in the open space.”

Another characteristic that has served Michel well: His patience.

He embraced the task of learning behind the scenes while he rehabbed his knee throughout August.

“I know what the process is like, and I trust the process,” Michel said. “. . . I’m dedicated, I’m eager to just learn. I think this process has been wonderful because I get so much information thrown at me, and I get to see how much I can grasp it.”

The Patriots, certainly, are hoping Michel is a quick learner. NFL teams expect immediate impacts from running backs taken in the first round, and the Patriots will be no different.

Sooner or later, they’ll be counting on Michel to become a major contributor in one of the league’s most prolific offenses.

Patriots notebook: Rex Burkhead misses practice due to concussion      Cache   Translate Page

FOXBORO — All Patriots were in attendance for yesterday’s practice, but running back Rex Burkhead was listed as a non-participant due to a concussion.

It’s unclear when Burkhead sustained the concussion. He was on the field for the final possession of Sunday’s Week 1 victory over Houston.

Rookie running back Sony Michel remained limited with a knee injury. He exited an Aug. 1 practice and did not return until Aug. 27. The first-round pick was not in uniform against the Texans.

Second-year tight end Jacob Hollister was limited with a hamstring injury. He did not play in the opener.

Offensive tackle Marcus Cannon (calf) and safety Nate Ebner (knee) were also limited. Cannon played 62 percent of the offensive snaps in the opener, as the Patriots worked in LaAdrian Waddle at right tackle in certain situations.

Malcom in middle

Trey Flowers and Deatrich Wise split the three sacks in Sunday’s season-opening win over the Texans, but another defensive lineman made a strong impression, too.

“I think Malcom Brown is probably the most underrated guy,” Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone said on a conference call. “He’s really done a heck of a job. He was a load for us last year. I think he’s a load again this year. He’s a three-down player, plays really well.”

As Marrone provided his assessment of the seemingly improved Patriots defense, he called the defensive front “all-day suckers.”

The Pats ratcheted up the pressure on Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, and they’ll look to do the same against Blake Bortles this Sunday.

Buffalo connection

Marrone is especially familiar with two of the Pats’ most important players, cornerback Stephon Gilmore and wide receiver Chris Hogan. He coached both in Buffalo from 2013-14.

“I just remember how much Stephon wanted to be the best,” Marrone said. “He really wanted to know everything inside and out. The way he practiced, the way he played, and how competitive he was. Shoot, when we played with him, he had one hand basically. He had hurt his wrist, and he wound up out there and he was playing his butt off. Just a highly competitive kid.”

As for Hogan?

“Chris’ story is a long road, one of those underdog-type stories,” Marrone said. “Whether we were drafting guys or bringing guys in, nobody was going to beat him out. He was just smart, he could play all the positions.”

Hogan’s career began to take off in 2014, which was Marrone’s final season with the Bills. He posted career-highs in receiving yards in 2014, 2015 and 2016. A year ago, Hogan was on pace to obliterate his previous career-best mark (680 yards) before a shoulder injury knocked him out for almost the entire second half of the season.

QB on the run

At his press conference yesterday morning, Bill Belichick noted that Bortles’ mobility is an important part of his game.

“He runs well,” Belichick said. “He’s a big, strong kid. He’s hard to bring down. He can extend plays, so just similar to the quarterbacks we’ve seen, really, the past three weeks, not counting the Giants game. But we’ve seen this three weeks in a row with players that have that type of skill and, yeah, he’s definitely in that category.”

The Pats faced Carolina’s Cam Newton in the third preseason game and contained Watson in the regular-season opener.

Bortles rushed four times for 42 yards in Jacksonville’s Week 1 win over the Giants. He’s averaged 352.5 rushing yards per season since entering the league.

“I think that’s one part of his game that (the media) tend to overlook,” Marrone said. “I don’t think coaches that we play overlook it. It’s on tape.”

Guregian: Gronk plans to keep his cool against Ramsey, Jags      Cache   Translate Page
Subtitle:
But CB’s diss givesTE extra motivation

Rob Gronkowski didn’t back down from Jalen Ramsey. But he didn’t exactly pour gasoline on the fire either with respect to his mini-war with the Jaguars cornerback, who recently dissed the Patriots tight end’s abilities.

Just a few days away from their Sunday showdown, Gronkowski was pretty shrewd in how he dealt with the Ramsey questions yesterday during his media session. Most important, he plans on having his wits about him when he deals with the Jaguars, and not letting his emotions get the best of him when the two combatants from last season’s AFC title game meet in Jacksonville.

But he also didn’t lie. He admitted he’s going to have a little extra juice thanks to Ramsey’s claims that he’s “overrated.”

Who wouldn’t be a little pumped to prove a doubter wrong?

Gronkowski, who has given in to a bit of overzealousness at times, vows he won’t be baited into any unnecessary penalties or hurt his team trying to even the score.

“There can always be talking going back and forth, tempers getting heated up,” Gronkowski said when asked if he thought he had to guard against being baited into penalties in this particular game. “You’ve just gotta keep your cool. I don’t see any benefit to get a 15-yard penalty on the field because you lose your cool. So just gotta keep cool, and keep your head on a string.”

Gronk acknowledged having known some players on his own team who were good at provoking penalties.

“I’ve had players on my team before where they just get into people’s heads. And they react, and they get 15-yard penalties,” he said. “So you just gotta keep your head straight, keep your cool and just play ball.”

Interestingly, Gronkowski didn’t agree or disagree with Ramsey’s claims. He just let him have his say. That’s probably because he would show him how he really felt on Sunday. That’s what Patriots do. That’s how they respond.

“If that’s how he feels, that’s how he feels,” Gronkowski said, when asked specifically about Ramsey’s remarks. “It’s a big game this Sunday, we’re playing them. I’m sure I’m going to have opportunities to go versus him. I’m sure he’s going to have opportunities to go versus me. I’m just preparing like I always prepare. I just gotta do my job out on the field and just worry about that.”

Once again, a smart way for Gronkowski to handle and approach a tricky question. He knew reporters were hoping he’d dump all over Ramsey and provide bulletin board material for the Jaguars. But he wouldn’t cross the line.

He just danced on the line when asked if Ramsey’s put-down motivated him.

“Sure. There’s always motivation you’re looking for,” Gronkowski said. “That’s a trick question. You’re trying to get me to say something. It does and it doesn’t, you know what I mean? It motivates you, hearing that. Obviously, there’s something out there he saw on film and stuff that I can probably get better at football in certain categories. You don’t always feel the best every single day when you’re out on the field. If that’s how he feels, that’s how he feels.”

Gronkowski is expecting anything and everything in this game. He knows the Jaguars, 24-20 losers in the AFC title game, will be looking for payback.

The Patriots tight end had to leave right before the half, suffering a concussion on a helmet-to-helmet hit from safety Barry Church as he was attempting to catch a pass on a seam route.

It’s possible the Jaguars might match their best corner (Ramsey) on the Patriots best offensive player (Gronkowski), which would really make it interesting.

One of Ramsey’s points was that when Gronkowski faces an elite corner, his catch percentage goes down from 71 percent to 56 percent. Asked if he thought about those numbers, Gronkowski provided another classic answer.

“That’s some good percentages still. I mean, I don’t really go into statistics like that,” he said. “I’ve just got to play ball. That’s basically all. I’ve got to come out and play ball.”

Asked if he had a preference who covered him, Gronkowski cracked: “D-lineman.”

Naturally, Gronkowski kept it light and was full of humor. He also gave Ramsey some props.

“There’s a lot of good trash-talkers in the league,” Gronkowski said, “but I’ll put him right up there for sure.”

Did Tom Brady’s favorite target remember the first time he engaged in trash-talking with someone?

“Oh, I got it all the time when I was younger. It’s just part of the game. It’s part of being an athlete,” he said. “There’s opportunities you can take in it and take advantage of it and there’s other times where if you take it the wrong way, you can lose your cool and it can go the opposite way and hurt your team. I’ve just got to keep doing what I’ve got to do and keep doing my job.”

If Gronkowski lives by his words, the Patriots should be in business Sunday.

Gelingt den Ravens das nächste Schützenfest?       Cache   Translate Page

Richie Incognito is abruptly calling it quits on an 11-season NFL career Thomas Morstead Jersey (http://www.saintscheapstore.com/thomas-morstead-jersey-cheap) , three years after the Buffalo Bills gave the offensive guard a second chance at playing following his role in the Miami Dolphins' bullying scandal. The NFL Players Association on Tuesday night announced Incognito had contacted the union of his plans to retire. The announcement made on the NFLPA's Twitter account , came after Incognito revealed his intention to retire through a series of tweets and comments made to several publications throughout the morning. Without going into detail, the 34-year-old said he was "done" in a text to The Associated Press shortly after SportsIllustrated reported Incognito was "strongly considering retiring," but would consider returning for one more season at the right price. Incognito then told The Buffalo News he's retiring because of health reasons. "I'm done. That's it," Incognito told The News. "Went to the doctor. My liver and kidneys are shutting down. The stress is killing me." The Bills did not respond to a request seeking comment. Incognito's decision to retire comes a week after he fired his agent, David Dunn, in a post on Twitter. That decision came after Incognito accepted a pay cut by restructuring the final year of his contract. Incognito initially backed his restructured contract by posting a note on Twitter saying he was "thrilled to be returning this season and fired up to get back to work with my Buffalo Bills brothers." Incognito is also the subject of an NFL investigation after Jacksonville defensive end Yannick Ngakoue accused the Bills player of making racist slurs during the Jaguars' 10-3 win over Buffalo in an AFC wild-card playoff game in January. The NFL has not announced whether it has completed its investigation. Ngakoue said he and Incognito cleared the air after they were AFC teammates at the Pro Bowl in January. Incognito began Tuesday with a series of vague tweets, which began with "Good morning, FOOTBALL!" He then tweeted "Yes," and "Wow," before posting a note that read: "Big Ben." Later, he mentioned the Twitter accounts of the NFLPA and the union's assistant executive director Josh Jones Jersey (http://www.packerscheapstore.com/josh-jones-jersey-cheap) , George Atallah, in a note that read, "I'm done," followed by a winking emoji with its tongue stuck out. In its tweet Tuesday night, the NFLPA wished Incognito good luck in the next stage of his career. Incognito is leaving football a little over three years since signing a one-year deal with Buffalo to resume his career after spending 18 months away from the game. Incognito was suspended for the final eight games of the 2013 season, when the Dolphins were thrust into the national spotlight after offensive lineman Jonathan Martin abruptly quit the team amid accusations he was being bullied. An NFL investigation determined Incognito and two other Dolphins offensive linemen persistently harassed Martin. In February, Martin was detained and questioned by Los Angeles police after posting a threatening note on his Instagram account. Martin's post showed a shotgun and specifically mentioned Incognito, former teammate Mike Pouncey as well as a private Los Angeles prep school Martin once attended. Martin wrote suicide and revenge were the only options for a victim of bullying. Incognito also played three-plus seasons in St. Louis, which drafted him in 2005. He played in college at Nebraska but left after being suspended, then transferred to Oregon though he never played for the Ducks. Incognito earned three of his four Pro Bowl selections in Buffalo, and was considered among the Bills team leaders. He started all 36 games at left guard for the Bills, and was part of a line that led to Buffalo leading the NFL in yards rushing in both 2015 and '16. The Bills' offensive line is already undergoing a shuffle after center Eric Wood was diagnosed with a career-ending neck injury in January. Buffalo also traded starting left tackle Cordy Glenn to Cincinnati last month. 29. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (12-7) LAST SEASON: First year under coach Doug Marrone and top executive Tom Coughlin proved successful Larry Csonka Jersey (http://www.dolphinscheapstore.com/larry-csonka-jersey-cheap) , with Jags earning first postseason berth since 2007 and advancing to AFC championship game. Led by 10 points early in fourth quarter before losing at New England. Stout defense and league's top rushing attack were keys to team's turnaround, but both faltered down stretch. Defense stumbled in playoffs against Steelers and late against Patriots. Running game took huge step back late, averaging 51.3 yards fewer in final six weeks of regular season than in first 10 games. Still, rookie RB Leonard Fournette flashed at times and looked like building block. Defense established solid foundation, too. CB Jalen Ramsey emerged as arguably league's best defensive back. DE Calais Campbell enjoyed career year at age 31. And LBs Telvin Smith and Myles Jack proved to be speedy, dynamic tandem. QB Blake Bortles had more highs than lows and played turnover-free football in postseason, earning three-year, $54 million contract that includes $26.5 million guaranteed. THEY NEED: TE, G, T, QB, WR Jalyn Holmes Jersey (http://www.vikingscheapstore.com/jalyn-holmes-jersey-cheap) , LB, S THEY DON'T NEED: DL, C, RB, CB, P, K POSSIBLE FIRST PICK: T Kolton Miller, UCLA; T Mike McGlinchey, Notre Dame; TE Dallas Goedert, South Dakota State; TE Hayden Hurst, South Carolina; G Connor Williams, Texas; G Will Hernandez Chris Hogan Jersey (http://www.patriotscheapstore.com/chris-hogan-jersey-cheap) , UTEP. OUTLOOK: Coughlin and general manager Dave Caldwell made several changes despite team looking for sustained success. They let WR Allen Robinson, CB Aaron Colvin, LG Patrick Omameh, backup QB Chad Henne walk in free agency. They cut TE Marcedes Lewis, WR Allen Hurns and RB Chris Ivory. They signed three new offensive starters: WR Donte Moncrief, TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, and highly coveted LG Andrew Norwell. Team has no glaring holes for first time in decade, but is sure to draft another tight end and backup/development quarterback. Picking outside top 10 for first time since 2007. Free agent safety Eric Reid said Thursday he is not planning to protest during the national anthem this upcoming season. Reid has been among the NFL's most visible protesters since former San Francisco teammate Colin Kaepernick decided not to stand for the national anthem in 2016. Reid continued the protest of racial injustice and police brutality against minorities by kneeling during the anthem last season as Kaepernick was unable to find a job. But Reid said he will take a different approach in 2018. "We understand you have to change with the times Calvin Munson Jersey (http://www.giantscheapstore.com/calvin-munson-jersey-cheap) ," he said after watching his brother, Justin, take part in his Pro Day at Stanford. "I'm not saying I'm going to stop being active because I won't. I'm just going to consider different ways to be active, different ways to bring awareness to the issues of this country and improve on the issues happening in this country. I don't think it will be in the form of protesting during the anthem. I say during because it's crazy that the narrative changed to we were protesting the anthem and that wasn't the case. I think we're going to take a different approach to how we're going to be active." Reid has gotten no contract offers more than a week into free agency despite a record of strong play on the field and versatility that many teams usually covet. San Francisco general manager John Lynch said the team is monitoring the market for Reid but the Niners are mostly set at safety with Jaquiski Tartt, Jimmie Ward and Adrian Colbert under contract. Reid said his agent has heard from a "couple" of teams but money hasn't been discussed and he is still awaiting an opportunity. Reid has said that he understands his activism could affect his employment, especially after watching Kaepernick go unsigned for more than a year. "I said before, I stand by what I've done," he said. "I know why I've done it. My faith in God is the reason. I can go to sleep at night confident that I did what I was taught to do. I'm just going to stay positive, keep training Cassius Marsh Jersey (http://www.49erscheapstore.com/cassius-marsh-jersey-cheap) , keep staying in shape and we'll see what happens." Reid was a first-round pick by the 49ers in 2013 and made the Pro Bowl as a rookie. He has been a strong player throughout his career, playing strong safety, free safety and even some linebacker last season when San Francisco was short-handed at the position. He has 10 interceptions and 36 passes defensed in 70 career games. "Eric played and played well for us last year," Lynch said. "I think he's kind of stuck in a safety market that's been quiet. I would anticipate things starting to shake for him. We'll see." While Eric Reid looks for a team, he spent Thursday helping his brother prepare for his Pro Day. Justin Reid is considered one of the top safeties eligible for the draft and will likely get picked on the first two days of next month's draft. Justin Reid said he has visits planned with Minnesota, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Seattle and Carolina. He also met with 29 teams at the combine but said no one has asked him about his brother or if he would protest during the anthem. Justin Reid said he's prepared for those questions if they come and that he won't protest. "We each have our own beliefs Forrest Lamp Jersey (http://www.chargerscheapstore.com/forrest-lamp-jersey-cheap) ," he said. "He felt like that's what he needed to do. I have my own ways that I feel like I'm going to go about it. I'm not as much of a vocal person in that situation. I don't really like drama. I don't want to deal with that." The Philadelphia Eagles went from playoff spectators to hoisting the Lombardi Trophy, an impressive one-season turnaround that was far from unprecedented in the modern NFL. The Eagles were the seventh team in the past 19 seasons to pull off that trick in a sport that always goes through some significant playoff turnover each season. There have been at least four new playoff teams each year since the NFL went to the 12-team format in 1990, including eight new postseason participants last season when the Eagles won it all. With new blood coming into the playoffs each year, there are just as many teams heading another way, doomed by injuries, age, bad luck, poor coaching or other reasons. Here’s a look at three teams that could go from playoff spectators to participants, and three others that could go the opposite direction: TRENDING UP Houston Texans: Deshaun Watson showed flashes of becoming a star quarterback in six starts as a rookie before getting hurt. With the dynamic Watson on offense and a healthy J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus back on defense Tyeler Davison Jersey (http://www.saintscheapstore.com/tyeler-davison-jersey-cheap) , the Texans could be in position to get back into the playoffs after a one-year hiatus. The Texans scored at least 33 points in Watson’s final five starts and then went 1-8 after he had a season-ending injury in practice. Keeping Watson healthy will be necessary it the Texans are going to rebound. Green Bay Packers: Green Bay’s run of eight straight playoff appearances ended last season thanks mostly to a collarbone injury that limited star quarterback Aaron Rodgers to seven games. With Rodgers again healthy, the Packers should be among the contenders in the NFC, as they usually are. Green Bay was much more active this offseason under new GM Brian Gutekunst, adding prominent free agents like Jimmy Graham and Muhammad Wilkerson. New defensive coordinator Mike Pettine should bring a more aggressive approach that could help support Rodgers and the offense. San Francisco 49ers: San Francisco won its final five games last year after making the switch to Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback. With Garoppolo signed long term and poised to take his 7-0 career record into his first full season as an NFL starter and coach Kyle Shanahan having much more talent in Year 2 at the helm, the Niners could have the pieces to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2013. Free-agent running back Jerick McKinnon should spark the offense, and the defense has some key building blocks in DT DeForest Buckner and LB Reuben Foster. Richard Sherman could provide a defensive boost at cornerback if his Achilles tendon injury is healed. TRENDING DOWN Buffalo Bills: The Bills ended the longest playoff drought in North America’s four major sports leagues when they made the postseason for the first time since 1999. Repeating that in coach Sean McDermott’s second season will be a more difficult trick, especially with the change made at quarterback this offseason. Tyrod Taylor was traded to Cleveland, leaving either career backup A.J. McCarron or raw rookie Josh Allen as the top two options. Making the playoffs with one of those two at the helm would be a long shot, even in the weaker AFC. Tennessee Titans: The Titans also ended a playoff drought last season Everson Griffen Jersey (http://www.vikingscheapstore.com/everson-griffen-jersey-cheap) , making the postseason for the first time since 2008 under third-year quarterback Marcus Mariota and coach Mike Mularkey. Even winning a postseason game wasn’t enough for Mularkey to keep his job and Tennessee is now retooling under new coach Mike Vrabel. The Titans are in a tough division with Houston and Indianapolis likely taking big steps forward if Watson and Andrew Luck are healthy, and Jacksonville having one of the league’s most talented rosters. That makes a return to the postseason a difficult proposition in Tennessee. Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons took a step back last year after their Super Bowl collapse the previous season but still made the playoffs as a wild-card team. The offense regressed a bit after losing Shanahan as coordinator. There still is plenty of talent in Atlanta led by quarterback Matt Ryan and receiver Julio Jones, but the NFC is stacked, leaving little margin for error. — Carson Wentz Jersey (http://www.officialusafootballs.com)

The WPA Federal Writers' Project (FWP) of the late 1930's provides us with more than 2,300 first person accounts of former slaves. The slave narratives, with their autobiographical accounts, can provide insight into the institution, rich context, and clues for family research. But how can we use this rich resource? Can they be relied upon? Some of the questions we will discuss are: What is the  history of the slave narratives? Before, during, and after the Civil War. When were they taken? Who were the interviewers? What are the limitations of the narratives? Where can I find the narratives? Offline and Online. How can they be used for research? Names of family members, names of plantations, owners, and their family members; birth, marriage and death information for individuals; context for daily life in particular places.

Six States Post ‘In God We Trust’ in Public Schools, Alienating Kids And Parents      Cache   Translate Page
Six States Post ‘In God We Trust’ in Public Schools, Alienating Kids And Parents boston Thu, 09/13/2018 - 11:32
IGWT

Editor’s Note: This week, Americans United is marking the return of the school year with a special series of education-themed blog posts. Today’s looks at a growing problem: posting “In God We Trust” signs in public schools.

As you were getting ready to go back to your local public school this September – whether you’re still a kid or a parent dropping off your kids – you probably could have guessed what you’d see decorating the hallways and classrooms: science projects, student artwork, and periodic tables. But in six states around the country, you may have been surprised to see a new addition to those displays when you arrived. Legislators in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee, and North Carolina have all recently voted to require or allow posters that say “In God We Trust” to hang in public schools, including elementary schools

With all of the other pressing issues that our public schools currently face, why is hanging “In God We Trust” posters on the walls at the top of legislators’ agendas for this schoolyear? Many legislators claim that they passed these bills to encourage students to remember that “In God We Trust” is the national motto. But their own words betray these claims and show their true goal: to encourage students to believe in God.

Take it from the Florida bill’s sponsor, Rep. Kim Daniels (D-Jacksonville). During floor debate, Daniels said, “God is positive,” and he “is the light. Our schools need light in them like never before.” Another Florida legislator, Larry Lee (D-Ft. Pierce), said that the bill “is a great idea when many young people aren’t going to church.”

And in Alabama, Blount County Superintendent Rodney Green said it plainly. Posting “In God We Trust” “supports a recognition of a higher authority and we can depend on that higher authority for protection.”

These officials need to remember that it’s not the role of public schools to encourage children to recognize a higher power. The U.S. Constitution gives parents the right to decide what their children learn about God, not public schools. Of course, American families and students practice a variety of religions and faiths – and nearly 23 percent identify as nonreligious. Our public schools are supposed to bring Americans together and make all kids feel welcome, but these bills make some kids feel like outcasts in their own communities simply because of their religion.

State legislators have not been coming up with the idea and strategy to pass these “In God We Trust” bills on their own. These bills are the first step of a nationwide strategy called Project Blitz — a playbook created by three Christian nationalist groups to pass state bills that undermine religious freedom and redefine the U.S. as a Christian nation. They hope to use bills like “In God We Trust” as a stepping stone to even more damaging bills that allow public schools to promote prayer, teach creationism, and eventually allow the government to use religion to discriminate against LGBTQ people, women, and religious minorities.

And Project Blitz’s Christian nationalists are not shy about taking credit for their efforts. Former U.S. Rep. Randy Forbes, one of the Project Blitz’s architects, told reporters, “We’ve been spearheading the effort to get ‘In God We Trust’” back up in buildings across the country.” Forbes continued on to admit that “We worked with the state of Tennessee and many other states… We can kind of point out for them the landmines that are out there, telling them from best practices what other states have done that’s worked well.”

At Americans United, we’ve been monitoring Project Blitz’s efforts closely and have fought the state battles over “In God We Trust” that Forbes mentions. The six states that passed bills are only half of those that considered these bills in 2018. Six more states, shown in pink on the below map, considered “In God We Trust” bills during the 2018 legislative sessions. In total, there were twenty-six “In God We Trust” bills introduced in the states this year—up nearly 900% from last year, where there were only three bills introduced. It’s clear that Forbes and friends at Project Blitz have seen success this year.map

Based on the success of “In God We Trust” bills had in 2018, it’s safe to assume they’ll be back in 2019. Indeed, in Kentucky, a state legislator has already introduced one such bill for next year, and he’s not hiding his intention to use his bill to promote God either: as he told reporters, “We need God in our schools more than ever.”

Fortunately, so many are already speaking out against these bills, from Tennessee parents who believe it excludes people who don’t believe in God, to Palm Beach County public school teachers who expressed discomfort with displaying the motto in their classrooms. Here’s just one great example. Brandon Gilvin, Christian minister in Chattanooga, said, “It becomes pretty exclusionary for a lot of people, particularly religious minorities when it becomes something posted in public schools."

We agree. We will be again monitoring these bills closely and we’ll be fighting back. Sign up for our emails to stay updated on our plans to protect religious freedom in public schools.

Gronkowski isn’t all that interested in involving himself in any back-and-forth, preferring to let his play on the field speak for itself, as he told "NFL Total Access" on Wednesday, via Jeremy Bergman of NFL.com: Just talking trash all week, I mean, it’s really not my focus. It’s really not this team’s focus. Being here throughout the nine years, being under Coach Belichick’s wing throughout the years, learning from him, learning from the other veteran players here, we really don’t get into talks like that. I feel like that talking right there, going out preparing and showing what we can do Sunday is louder than just talking trash all week. It makes it fun, though. Gronkowski may be tak

More than 1,000 flights have been canceled and nearly a dozen airports shut down as the East Coast braces for Hurricane Florence (AAL, DAL, UAL, LUV, JBLU)      Cache   Translate Page

Hurricane Florence

  • Hurricane Florence has triggered more than 1,000 flight cancellations and the closing of roughly a dozen airports in the Carolinas and Virginia.
  • Delta and JetBlue have capped prices for flights in the affected areas, while American and United have opened reduced-price flights for evacuees.
  • American, Delta, United, and Southwest have also waived their in-cabin pet fees.
  • Nearly all major US carriers operating to areas affected by the storm have offered fee waivers for passengers.

Hurricane Florence has triggered more than 1,000 flight cancellations and the closing of nearly a dozen airports in North Carolina and South Carolina.

American Airlines, the carrier with the largest operation in the Carolinas, has announced the cancellation of more than 800 flights through Sunday.

The Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines said it had canceled 150 flights ahead of the storm.

Southwest announced that it had canceled all flights into and out of Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham in North Carolina as well as Richmond and Norfolk in Virginia from Thursday until Saturday morning.

Airports along the eastern seaboard are also expected to shut down ahead of the storm. According to American, airports in the North Carolina cities of Greenville, Jacksonville, New Bern, and Wilmington will be closed until Saturday. Raleigh-Durham is expected to experience "scattered cancellations" through Friday, while operations at Charlotte Douglas International were not affected as of Wednesday evening.

In South Carolina, airports in Myrtle Beach, Columbia, and Florence are closed through Saturday. Charleston's airport is expected to be closed through Friday.

In Virginia, the airport serving Hampton and Newport News is expected to be closed through Friday.

Delta announced on Monday that it was preemptively capping prices for some coastal and inland airports from Savannah, Georgia, north to Richmond, Virginia.

On Tuesday, JetBlue announced that it too would cap fares on seats to and from select areas affected by the hurricane.

"To assist the affected communities, JetBlue has capped fares on new bookings at $149 for remaining seats to/from Savannah, Charleston, Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, and Richmond through Sunday, September 16," a representative for the New York-based carrier told Business Insider in an email.

American and United announced last-minute reduced-price fares for those needing to evacuate by air.

Delta has made available an additional 1,200 seats on routes operating in the path of the hurricane via additional flights and the use of larger aircraft.

In addition, almost all major airlines operating in the region including American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, and Frontier have issued fee waivers for ticket holders who need to change their reservations.

American, Delta, and United have also waived baggage and pet-in-cabin fees for evacuees. Southwest also waived its pet fees for some airports in the region.

On Thursday, Hurricane Florence weakened slightly to a Category 2 hurricane, but it still boasts sustained winds of 105 mph with gusts reaching even higher speeds. In addition, the storm is expected to cause a storm surge of 9 to 13 feet along North Carolina's Outer Banks.
