Honu / Turtle charm      Cache   Translate Page

I got a wood turtle necklace in Honolulu a long time ago, and almost-that-long-ago it inspired me to cut a similar shape out of wood. With Florence bearing down on the east coast I had some idle time, and decided to try modeling an updated design.

The turtle.stl is a mostly-direct translation of my first idea for a cut-out version: notice it's a closed shape with no holes. I then thought about what it should actually look like if it were sized to be a necklace, with a little more "3D" to it, and came up with the 1" Honu.

It should be amazingly simple to print. The bottom is a little flat / edges are sharp for jewelry, but I'm postprocessing enough that it will round them off for me.

I hope you like it!

The Evolution of the Master-Planned Community      Cache   Translate Page
It wasn’t too long ago when the typical master-planned community was mostly a collection of separate subdivisions selling under a shared branded location, with some homes wrapped around a golf course or a water feature in order to offer views (and premiums).

If there was a retail component, it was generally located on the periphery, requiring residents on various cul-de-sacs to drive for even the shortest errand.  When people went out for walks, it was generally along paved sidewalks adjacent to neighborhood streets, and did little to encourage interaction among the residents.

Today, however, the typical master-planned community developer has replaced the golf course with open space and trails, created nostalgic town centers within walking distance of each home, and started producing regular events in order to foster more interaction among those who live there.

Somewhat ironically, it was the Great Recession, the housing bust and recovery which allowed many developers the luxury of time to re-think what a modern master-planned community could be. This time period also coincided with the aging of the millennial generation into their household-forming years, with many of them opting for novel and creative experiences, versus simply demanding more living space and a higher bedroom count.

Consequently, today’s most successful master plans focus on promoting a unique sense of place, with the actual living space sometimes almost viewed as a secondary consideration.

Another major change was greater product segmentation, with a few traditional single-family subdivisions of various home and lot sizes giving way to higher-density, single-family and multi-family options, both for younger residents as well as downsizing seniors wanting to live close to family and friends.  In some cases, today’s build-to-rent homes will eventually be converted for sale at the appropriate time, thus encouraging new renters to start developing local roots now instead of later.

Yet when bumping up against unyielding costs for land and improvements, developing an experiential community with ample open space alongside a wide mix of products creates its own mix of challenges to the bottom line.

Explains Tom Martin, Senior VP, Community Development of Newport Pacific Land Company, “I would say that our focus is not only on good place making and planning, but also on innovative products such as homes on small lots, cluster detached homes and townhomes.  This allows us to increase attainability thru density while achieving an acceptable residual to the land.”

In some cases, good place making can incorporate a common theme to be used throughout the community.

At the 199-acre Sterling Meadows master plan near Sacramento, CA, developer The True Life Companies chose music as a connector, especially at its 13.7-acre main park.

In addition to interior pathways designed to resemble a treble cleft (essential to reading music), musical notes and symbols are inlaid into the pavement on pathways, in plazas and in water play areas.  Even the community’s street names are tied to music, with the exception of one key street, which is named for a fallen military veteran of the local community.

In other cases, ensuring that the community blends into the surrounding environment is critical.  At the 1,600-acre Tesoro Viejo master plan north of Fresno, CA, views of the nearby Sierra Nevada foothills are given center stage, with one-quarter of the land allocated for natural open space, parks, areas for recreation and miles of trails. For community interaction, a resort-style clubhouse, amphitheater and large event lawn will be able to host a variety of live events.

The tradition-oriented Town Center, modeled after a typical small town’s Main Street, will include new stations for fire and police protection as well as the Welcome Center. Dubbed “The Hub,” the center will include a neighborhood coffee bar, food options and multi-use offices for daily use long after the last home has sold.

For more built-out environments, the challenge is how to transform a large swath of land which will still appear relatively seamless when completed.  In between the downtown area and a 30-acre harbor in Honolulu, HI, Howard Hughes Corp. is re-envisioning a former center for heavy industry and commercial fishing into the environmentally friendly Ward Village.  Here, cars are given a lesser priority than pedestrians, bikes and buses, encouraging a slower pace of life.

When completed, a central plaza with a Farmer’s Market, a future light rail stop, 4,000 residential units and over one million square feet of retail and commercial space – including scores of existing businesses – will allow locals to visit some of their long-favorite haunts in a re-envisioned place.  Others will simply call it home.

Olivia Is Now a Tropical Depression, More Rain for Hawaii      Cache   Translate Page
Heavy rain and winds from a tropical storm downed trees, knocked out power and prompted evacuations of several homes on Hawaii's Maui island but spared the state widespread damage before it headed to sea and away from the state. Tropical Storm Olivia was downgraded Thursday to a tropical depression after it crossed the state Wednesday, making landfall on Maui and Lanai islands. Weather forecasters warned heavy downpours would continue Thursday, producing produce additional rainfall of 3 to 5 inches (8 to 13 centimeters) and isolated amounts of 6-8 inches (15 to 20 centimeters) on higher terrain. That could cause could cause life-threatening flash floods because the ground is already saturated with water, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said in a statement. But Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa said he was hopeful the effects of the storm would be limited. "It's been an ordeal but we're coming through this fairly well," Arakawa said at a news conference. "I'm not seeing any really large areas of damage, no homes destroyed or flooded to any kind of extreme measures as we did in previous storms." The Central Pacific Hurricane Center said Olivia was more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) southwest of Honolulu late Wednesday. It was moving west with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph), just barely strong enough to qualify as a tropical storm. The hurricane center said Olivia will likely weaken further and become a tropical depression by Thursday. Maui County said several homes in Lahaina had to be evacuated because of rising waters in a nearby river. Another home in Waihee Valley was evacuated. Kahulu Peltier-Yaw said she saw gushing water from an overflowing river blocking at least one part of eastern Molokai's only highway. She said it's common for the highway to become impassable when there's heavy rain. A flash flood warning was issued for Molokai island and Maui. A wind gust of 51 mph (82 kph) was recorded at the airport on the island of Lanai. A rain gauge recorded 9 inches (22 centimeters) of rain at West Wailua Iki on Maui. The storm, which was a hurricane earlier in the week, slowly lost power as it neared the state. Forecasters cancelled a tropical storm warning for Oahu and Maui late Wednesday after the storm moved far enough south to put the islands out of range for stronger winds. Matthew Foster, a meteorologist with the hurricane center, said moisture from Olivia will linger through Friday even though the wind threat has died. This, combined with an upper level system, may trigger heavy rain and possibly thunderstorms on Kauai, Oahu and possibly Molokai, he said. Honolulu's H-1 freeway flooded under similar circumstances two years ago after Tropical Storm Darby passed the state and dissipated, he noted. Hawaii Gov. David Ige and Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell both said they were keeping an eye on the leftover moisture. "We're all being cautious. We all do need to be very cautious until tomorrow," Caldwell said. Schools, courts and government offices were closed in Maui County in preparation for the storm. The Federal Emergency Management Agency sent emergency teams and supplies to Maui ahead of the storm. The National Guard has mobilized personnel and trucks to the east side of Maui. President Donald Trump has signed a disaster declaration for Hawaii, which will help FEMA respond, the governor said. Hawaiian Airlines cancelled flights by its commuter airline, Ohana by Hawaiian. Public schools on the Big Island, Oahu and Kauai were open. Tourists, like Randy McQuay from Texas, weren't letting the storm dampen their vacations. "No, coming from Houston we're used to storms and hurricanes," he said. "Didn't expect to find one in Hawaii, but yeah we're used to it." Solana Miller, who lives on Oahu's North Shore, said she wasn't too worried about Olivia. She has leftover preparations from when Hurricane Lane passed near the state last month. "We kind of just kept all the water and the cans of food and stuff," she said, "so if anything really hits we'll be fine."

EUEM - Geolocation dashlets not showing captured data      Cache   Translate Page

This document contains official content from the BMC Software Knowledge Base. It is automatically updated when the knowledge article is modified.

    PRODUCT:

BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring - Software Edition

    PROBLEM:

We are capturing data and our watchpoint is showing it but nothing is shown in the Global Application Delivery dashlet.

    SOLUTION:

How does geolocation works in general?

Geo location is based on the IP address. As there is no geographical information in any IP or TCP header, this geolocation is based on tables mapping specific IPs to specific physical locations. These tables are primarily maintained by the regional internet registries but some vendors are adding some data to their own databases to provide more information. The accuracy generally goes down with the deeper level of detail (Country geolocation is considered accurate, geolocation per city is considered fairly accurate, depending on the regional internet registry of origin). The most granular data available is generally the city level, except for the US which can go down to the metropolitan area.

Please refer to this link for more detail: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geolocation_software

Of course, for geo location work, the IP has to be a public IP, not a private IP.  EUEM uses the Client IP (first public IP) for geolocation, for example in the GAD dashlet (Global Application Delivery dashlet). Given the MaxMind database it works with (https://www.maxmind.com) and given the technical backend constraints on EUEM not all the granularity one could think of is available in the GAD dashlet. This is generally accepted and if further granularity is necessary, the exported data (using export APIs) contains the raw information (Client IP) that can be used in external tools.

In EUEM, how is it possible to capture data in my watchpoint and the GAD dashlet is not displaying it?

As per the "Client IP" reference list on the Collector, the monitored traffic is showing private IPs only (in 10.x.y.z network, Class A private network). There is no way to give a geolocation based on a private IP address, hence the GAD dashlet not showing anything.

In order to work around this issue, on the EUEM Collector, edit the "First Public IP" Custom Field by adding a new extraction rule as follow:

    1. Set traffic selection:

      1. Format: "Filter expression only"
      2.
      3. Extraction name: "Mapping private IPs to Public IPs for geolocation"
      4.
      5. Filter Expression: "(true)"
      6.
    2.
    3. Set data source:

      1. Source field: "Client IP"
      2.
    4.
    5. Set transformation:

      1. Add transformation: "IP lookup mapping"
      2.

After that, you will be able to create an IP lookup mapping with the suggested configuration:

    • For initial values that do not have a mapping defined, use "174.47.67.9".

      • This specific IP is located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Using this IP will allow to easily spot missed (un-mapped) Client IPs. If you expect some traffic coming from Honolulu, you can set this default IP to any other location you do not expect any traffic from.
      •
    •
    • For each Private IP address (or ranges), create a mapping to a Public IP address that will be located in a place you would like to see it.

      • We suggest to use stable Public IPs (like public libraries or government IPs as they should not change owner in time). To find a correct public IP, you will need to search on Internet to find some relevant ones (for example, google "IP address Ottawa" to find a public IP in Ottawa. Then use the University of Ottawa or the General Hospital of Ottawa as those IPs should remain stable in time).
      •
      • Of course you can map entire subnets to a single public IP. For example, my company has an office in Montreal with private subnet "10.1.x.y", an office in Ottawa with private subnet "10.2.x.y", an office in Vancouver with private subnet "10.3.x.y" and a VPN access for people working on the road or from home with private subnet "10.10.x.y". I will find 4 different Public IPs (one in Montreal, one in Ottawa, one in Vancouver and one in Calgary) and map each office's subnet to the appropriate city Public IP, while mapping the VPN subnet to the Calgary Public IP.
      •

Pro-Tip: To double check that the chosen Public IP address is correct and fits your need, use the online tool on www.maxmind.com or any other freely available geolocation tool available online. EUEM CLI command "geolookup" will explicitly check the installed geodb on the collector so you can confirm at EUEM level where the selected Public IP will be mapped to.

Once done, save your configuration and the GAD dashlet should start displaying Clients correctly on the world map, as per the configuration done.

RELEASE: 45 Cities Pledge to Conserve and Restore Forests, Citing Public Health, Water and Climate Benefits

Amman, Auckland, Jakarta, Johannesburg, Mexico City, Oslo, Sacramento and more cities representing over 164 million residents join Cities4Forests initiative

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 12, 2018) – Floods and landslides are wreaking havoc on cities from Bangkok to Bangalore. Urban heat islands are exacerbating sweltering temperatures from Los Angeles to São Paulo. Concerns about drinking water are growing from Bogota to Johannesburg to Jakarta. Rising sea levels threaten Miami and Mumbai alike. Now, a coalition of cities has emerged to protect their residents from these threats by deploying a highly underrated resource: forests.

Today at the Global Climate Action Summit, 45 cities across six continents joined the Cities4Forests initiative, committing to conserve and restore their forests while making residents more aware of the vast benefits of trees. Cities joining include Addis Ababa, Bogotá, Kigali, Kochi, Quito, São Paulo, Toronto and Vienna, with many more across the globe and in the U.S. such as Detroit, Los Angeles, New York City, Oakland, Salt Lake City, Seattle and Washington, D.C.

“Cities have invisible footprints on faraway forests that most people aren't aware of. The commodities that we consume - timber, paper, palm oil, beef, soybeans – can be responsible for destroying forests. And the benefits that forests provide to cities are underappreciated too,” said Frances Seymour, Distinguished Senior Fellow at World Resources Institute. “The more we learn about how trees interact with the atmosphere, the more we realize how forests influence the climate on both a local and a global scale. Forests are an important source of climate resilience and stability for people, no matter where we live.”

Trees and forests are immensely valuable to cities and their residents. The Cities4Forests initiative works at three levels: inner, nearby and faraway forests. Trees within cities—the inner forests in parks, boulevards, and yards—help filter air, moderate temperatures and lower energy bills. Trees in the watersheds surrounding cities—nearby forests—buffer against flooding and landslides, lower water treatment costs, offer exercise opportunities and give residents an escape from hectic urban life. Trees in faraway forests, particularly in the tropics, sequester carbon to help combat climate change, generate rain for the world’s farm belts, provide an array of essential products and medicinal ingredients, and host the majority of the world’s land-based biodiversity.

“As the City of Trees, we in Sacramento recognize the important role forests play in promoting clean air and water, and enhancing the quality of life of all residents,” said Mayor Darrell Steinberg, of Sacramento. “From their ability to curb climate change to the miles of hiking and biking trails they provide, without forests, our city cannot truly thrive. Cities4Forests will help us, and other cities, share the best ways to prioritize, restore, and protect the trees that make our communities vibrant and healthy.”

“As Antananarivo is hit by cyclones and tropical storms every year, I fully understand the importance of protecting and restoring trees and forests inside and nearby our city,” said Mayor Lalao Ravalomanana, of Antananarivo, Madagascar. “Green areas can reduce our risks from natural disasters, support climate action strategies and contribute to a more healthy and resilient environment.”

The 45 founding cities of Cities4Forests include cities from every continent except Antarctica, representing 164.9 million residents in their metropolitan areas (see the full list below). Participating cities share a commitment to reduce deforestation, restore forests and help manage forests both inside and outside city limits. Each city joining the Cities4Forests initiative has committed to:

    • Understand. To assess their reliance and impacts on trees and forests.
    • Engage. To raise awareness among residents about the benefits forests provide, communicate what people can do to make a positive impact and collaborate across government agencies to improve the health of trees and forests.
    • Innovate. To harness the power of forests to help achieve climate goals, secure clean and stable water supplies, reduce stormwater runoff, improve public health and provide recreation.
    • Act. To implement new tools, local policies, voluntary programs, investments and public procurement decisions to meet these goals.
    • Progress. To engage at the three Cities4Forest scales (inner, nearby, and faraway forests), participating in at least one level by 2020, two by 2022 and all three by 2025.
    • Share. To share insights, experiences, and innovations to inspire ambition and mobilize action among cities around the world.

“Conserving our forests is a top priority in Mexico City’s climate action plan,” said Tanya Müller García, Mexico City’s Secretary of Environment. “In fact, 59% of the city’s territory is conserved land that provides multiple environmental benefits – absorbing carbon emissions, protecting our water supply, regulating the city’s temperature and creating space for biodiversity. These benefits are fundamental for Mexico City’s sustainability and for our residents’ quality of life. And we recognize that forests outside of the city’s boundaries need to be protected too. Mexico City is the first local government in Latin America to launch a Forest Carbon Bond. Now with our commitment to Cities4Forests, we continue advancing even more ambitious climate goals.”

Cities4Forests is managed by World Resources Institute, Pilot Projects and REVOLVE. Cities joining the program can benefit from their technical assistance to measure tree cover canopy and prioritize where to plant trees for maximum benefit; increased capacity to apply for funding for tree planting; advice on where to look for financing to protect watersheds or restore degraded areas; help writing sustainable procurement guidelines for timber, construction materials and paper products; and much more.

“I am an enthusiastic city dweller in a capital surrounded by deep forests. I know how vital these accessible, yet quiet forests are to the health and well being of the people of Oslo,” said Norway's Minister of Climate and Environment, Ola Elvestuen, who is supporting the initiative. “Indeed, forests are incredibly valuable to cities and urban citizens for contemplation, exercise, by providing improved air quality and cleaner drinking water. Still, forests further away – particularly in the tropics – are even more important. They support rainfall for food production and food security worldwide and they combat climate change by storing massive amounts of carbon. Halting and reversing tropical deforestation is critical to retain these benefits, and only with cities and their citizens on board can we succeed.”

City officials will also benefit from a peer-to-peer exchange network to learn from other cities and highlight success cases, and a citizen engagement and communications package.
