Hurricane Hell: Here Are 5 of the Most Recent Devastating Storms Linked to Climate Change      Cache   Translate Page
The new normal is frightening.

Only two weeks after the government of Puerto Rico raised the official death toll from Hurricane Maria from 64 to 2,975—making it the deadliest hurricane to occur last year—North and South Carolina residents are evacuating coastal areas in preparation for Hurricane Florence, which is expected to deliver winds of 130 miles per hour and be the worst hurricane to hit the Carolinas since the 1980s. Hurricanes have been pounding the southeastern U.S. for centuries, but in the era of climate change, they are becoming more frequent and more devastating.

Meteorologists are seeing an increase in the what is known as “rapid intensification,” meaning that a storm’s maximum sustained winds increase by at least 35 mph within a 24-hour period. According to data from the National Hurricane Center, there were, on average, ten cases of rapid intensification per year between 1982 and 1994—whereas between 2005 and 2017, 20 cases per year was the average. In 2017, the National Hurricane Center reported 40 cases of rapid intensification.

Meteorologists have five separate categories for hurricanes, with Category 1 being the least severe and Category 5 being the most severe. Florence appears to be reaching the Carolinas as a Category 4, but it could intensify to Category 5. And when rapid intensification—a phenomenon encouraged by climate change—occurs and a hurricane goes from Category 1 to Category 4 or 5 in less than 24 hours, there is little time to prepare.

Here are five of the most devastating hurricanes that occurred in recent years.

1. Hurricane Katrina

In August 2015, Hurricane Katrina originated in the Bahamas before making its way to the U.S. A hurricane varies in intensity, and at its worst, Katrina became a Category 5 storm. The National Hurricane Center attributed a total of 1836 deaths to Katrina, with up to 1577 deaths in Louisiana—and the flooding was so severe in New Orleans that 80% of the city was under water.

Veteran reporter Mark Schleifstein, who covered Katrina for the New Orleans Times-Picayune, witnessed Katrina first hand and has some grim advice for residents of the Carolinas who are refusing to evacuate for Hurricane Florence: “write your Social Security number on your arm, so officials can identify your body.”

2. Hurricane Harvey

2017 was a terrible year for hurricanes, and one of the worst was Hurricane Harvey—which affected parts of Latin America (including Nicaragua and Honduras) but was especially devastating around the Texas Gulf Coast. Of the 108 deaths caused by Harvey in late August/early September 2017, 103 were in Texas. Some weather stations in Texas reported more than four feet of rain, and Houston suffered some of the worst flooding in the city’s history.

3. Hurricane Maria

Only a few weeks after Hurricane Harvey ravaged the Texas Gulf Coast, the Caribbean was, in September 2017, pounded by Hurricane Maria—which reached Category 5 at its worst. Maria caused some deaths in the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Guadalupe, but the worst damage by far occurred in Puerto Rico. Of the more than 3,050 people killed by Maria, most of the fatalities occurred in Puerto Rico—although 65 people were killed on the island of Dominica, which didn’t have time to adequately prepare thanks to rapid intensification. A year later, Puerto Rico is still recovering from Maria.

Maria is a perfect example of how bad climate change is making rapid intensification: the storm went from Category 1 to Category 5 in only about half a day.

4. Hurricane Sandy

In the U.S., hurricanes have been most likely to affect the southern states.

Floridians are more likely to experience hurricanes than residents of New Jersey or Massachusetts, but that doesn’t mean that residents of the northeastern U.S. are immune to them—not by a longshot. And in 2012, Hurricane Sandy caused billions of dollars in damage, pounding the New Jersey Shore and the coast of Maryland as well as New York City. Atlantic City was evacuated, parts of Manhattan suffered flooding, and the mass transit systems of NYC and Philadelphia (which is about 60 miles inland) were shut down.

When Kevin E. Trenberth (a senior climatologist for the National Center for Atmospheric Research) was asked whether or not Hurricane Sandy was affected by climate change, he responded that while the answer was yes, Sandy was hardly unique in that regard. In 2012, Trenberth asserted, “All weather events are affected by climate change because the environment in which they occur is warmer and moister than it used to be.”

5. Hurricane Ike

In September 2008, Hurricane Ike caused at least 195 deaths and affected a wide area ranging from Cuba, Haiti (where at least 74 deaths occurred) and the Bahamas to the Florida Panhandle, the Mississippi Coast and the Texas Gulf Coast. Altogether, Ike is believed to have caused about $38 billion in damage.

Ely Air Lines
By Mike Ely and Linda Street-Ely

Linda: Apart from war-related flying, weather research, search and rescue, mercy flights, and such, when we consider travel by air it brings us thoughts of adventure waiting on the horizon. But travel does more than jet us away from home. When we go to faraway places we learn about other cultures. If we are open to it, we also learn about ourselves, outside our comfort zone.

We re-evaluate values; experiences versus things. For example:

- Climbing to the top of Sniper Tower in Mostar, Bosnia and witnessing the messages of peace and remembrance in street art;

- Finding the Pittman Apartment building in Saigon—the one in the iconic photo of a helicopter lifting some of the last few people out of the country as the enemy rolled down the streets in tanks;

- Our souls soaking in beautiful Cambodia and her lovely people who have suffered immensely, yet their art is healing a wounded nation.

We’ve seen firsthand how God uses art to heal in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe. It’s powerful. We’ve met survivors and descendants of those who suffered. We’ve heard their stories and they have moved us. Experience versus things? There is no souvenir of that worth.

Mike: There’s so much more to the universe than the little space we take up. Most people who travel report a significantly deeper sense of connection to the rest of the humanity. But to get this benefit, we must be immersed in the culture we visit. Cruises, resorts, and shopping don’t show us the real world. To be in the neighborhoods and visit people in their homes, to discover their customs, traditions, daily life, is to gain appreciation for our differences and similarities.

I flew a trip to the Dominican Republic for the wedding of the French Prince Louis Alphonse, Duke of Anjou to the daughter of a friend of my boss. My co-pilot and I did not attend the wedding but remained in the country for a week, put up at an exclusive resort. Resort life did not give much of a window into the lives of the people in the D.R. All around the outside of the compound were ramshackle homes, most only half built. These people worked behind the scenes at the resort but were not allowed to interact with guests. We were discouraged from leaving the compound except in one of the resort vehicles to and from the airport.

I contrast this with Alex, our enterprising tuk-tuk driver in Siem Reap, Cambodia. He took us to his village and his home. We tasted local herbs and learned about how a neighbor extracts sap from a tree, rising early to boil it carefully for hours in a wide ten-gallon cast iron bowl hung crudely over a fire to make sweet syrup, which he sells in the afternoon. Cambodian children warmed our hearts as they walked dirt roads with their arms around each other—buddies, like kids everywhere.

We are enriched as we travel beyond our borders to truly live in God's creation.

Flood risk remains high over parts of Nigeria, as heavy rainfall is expected to continue

Africa Weather Hazards

  1. Heavy rainfall caused flooding in western and southern Nigeria. The forecast rain during the next week increases the risks for flooding over the region.

  2. Torrential rain has increased the level of the Atbara and Dindir Rivers. Additional rainfall over the region is likely to further raise water levels, including the Nile River and its tributaries.

  3. Irregular rainfall since June has resulted in deteriorated ground conditions across parts of western Uganda, northeastern DRC, and southern South Sudan.

  4. Despite an overall improvement in rainfall over the past four weeks, deficits remain over portions of southwestern Ethiopia and eastern South Sudan.

FDNY 343 and the 1979 Honda (thanks CJ!)      Cache   Translate Page

In the August of 2001, Dominican Republic native Gerard Baptiste, FDNY firefighter, Ladder 9, purchased a $100 fixer-upper 1979 Honda CB750, despite the advice of his fellow Ladder 9 firefighters/motorcycle enthusiasts, for his first bike and brought it to his East Village Engine 33/Ladder 9 firehouse where he intended to work on its restoration for use as his first motorcycle.

The bike sat in the firehouse and its beat-up condition became a running joke among Baptiste’s fellow firefighters, who nicknamed him Biscuits for his habit of carrying dog treats as an overture to meet local dog walkers.

Gerald Baptiste served with the U.S. Army National Guard and FDNY Ladder Company 9, one of three firefighters from his firehouse to die at Ground Zero, was last seen evacuating people from the north tower of the World Trade Center.

After Baptiste’s death on 9/11, the surviving members of his company took on the project of restoring the bike. With support from enthusiasts across the country, the 1979 Honda was transformed into a memorial motorcycle now known as the "Dream Bike."

According to the book “Motorcycle Dream Garages” by Lee Klancher, a pair of reporters from Backroads magazine attended a fundraiser at the firehouse in October 2001 and noticed the bike behind a pile of donations. When asked about it, veteran firefighter Michael Wernick called it “garbage” and said he planned to throw it out. Backroads’ Jeff Kurtzman wrote a column about the forgotten motorcycle, and the response from readers was so overwhelming that Kurtzman’s Backroads colleague Brian Rathjen reached out to Honda and Progressive Insurance, who agreed to help. Spearheaded by the late Stephen Lovas, owner of a New Jersey motorcycle shop, and with the assistance of grieving firefighters, the Dream Bike project began.

A 2004 documentary, ''F.D.N.Y. Dream Bike,'' by filmmakers John Allison and Tim O’Grady recounted the rehabilitation effort. https://www.firebooks.com/products/fdny-dream-bike-in-honor-of-gerard-baptiste-fdny-ladder-9

Following his line of duty death during the 9/11 tragedy, a Ladder 9 member decided to restore the bike in Gerard’s memory. What followed is truly an amazing story - over the course of 15 months with the support of his fellow FDNY members, motorcycle enthusiasts, Backroads Magazine, American Honda, a motorcycle restoration shop in New Jersey and financial support from corporations, the bike which was in deplorable condition was completely restored to the pristine condition shown above.

It didn’t have a permanent home for several years. It resided in Werwick’s garage for a while before he and his wife decided to auction it off and donate the proceeds to an educational fund established for the children of firefighters killed in the attacks. When the bike didn’t reach the reserve price, they raffled it instead. The winner was a woman in California, who gave the bike to a fireman who lost a brother on 9/11. That firefighter gave it back to the Werwicks, who donated it to the 9/11 Memorial Museum, which was in the planning stages at the time.

This truly unique bike is shown on display in the FASNY Museum of Firefighting in Hudson, New York.

The top of the gas tank includes an ornate cross surrounded by 10 roses, 2 helmets (one with 33 and the other with 9) symbolizing the Engine 33 and Ladder 9 house.

Photo courtesy of the Caribbean Area.Any concluding thoughts? Then it doesn’t matter what else is going on; they have something that is very sure.In that talk they would find, number one, that they should receive their own testimony of the restored gospel to know that they have a Heavenly Father who loves them and to know that Christ has restored His work to the earth. Also, that they can gain their own testimony of the Book of Mormon. President Russell M. Nelson delivers his message and testimony in Spanish at a September 1. 2018, member devotional in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Photo courtesy of the Caribbean Area. The answer is the same for all people: God gives everyone blessings and challenges. The blessings of life and the opportunity to learn and develop faith are the same for all people. That’s a great gift.Would you share your feelings about the people of the Caribbean?Elder Renlund: If I were giving any advice to the rising generation in the Caribbean—to the youth and the young adults—it would be to reread President Nelson’s talk at April general conference.Last year’s hurricanes presented great hardships for many Puerto Ricans, including Church members. Yet many Puerto Rican members say it was also a period of personal growth and increased unity in wards and branches.Your children will be more obedient. They will be sweeter. They will be kinder. They will be more intelligent if you read them the scriptures. Correct them in private and praise them in public.President Nelson: These are challenges all over the world—how do we strengthen our families and how do we raise children who are obedient? If the Holy Ghost is directing a person to stay put and build the Church, their families, and their lives in the place where God has already placed him or her, then that’s what he or she should do.President Nelson: It is possible to find joy in life even through the most difficult circumstances. The hurricane that came a year ago damaged Puerto Rico mercilessly. Yet hundreds of Latter-day Saints came to help out. They distributed relief supplies, food, and other commodities that were needed. How does a visit from a prophet of God bless those he visits?

What advice do you have for the Caribbean members to strengthen their marriages and families?Elder Renlund: It is unbelievable to be with the prophet, President Nelson. It is a thrill I wish everyone could have.Elder Renlund: What one should do with one’s life is very individual. Every member of the Church has been blessed with the Holy Ghost. Our counsel to people throughout the world is to stay in their homelands and to strengthen and build up the Church. But we don’t tell people what to do. We trust that they will be inspired by the Holy Ghost as to what to do.President Nelson: Whenever one of the Twelve Apostles comes to a country, that country will be blessed. To have two of the 15 men who hold the holy apostleship here in this country is a very important, historic step. The [Dominicans] will be blessed because of the fact that the Lord’s Apostles have been here and taught and loved the people. The challenges are the same throughout the world. If you can learn to love the Lord, your capacity to love your companion is increased. If you can love the Lord first, then your capacity to teach your children is increased.Following the historic gathering, which included a message from President Nelson delivered entirely in Spanish (see related article), the visiting Brethren sat down with several Latter-day Saint news organizations, including the Church News, to discuss their historic visit to the Caribbean.President Nelson: I love the people of the Caribbean islands. I first came here in 1994 and I’ve been here many times since. I remember in 2002 I was able to come here with President Thomas S. Monson. That was a blessing for the people and for me.Some questions and responses have been edited for length and clarity.Elder Renlund: In our meeting with the Dominican members, something very historic happened: the prophet of God spoke in Spanish to all assembled. (See related article.) It’s the first time it’s happened in this dispensation. It brought a spirit and a look to the faces of the people. It was the language of the Spirit that spoke to them because we have a prophet who, through the [magnified] gifts God has given him, can communicate in Spanish to the people. What counsel would you give members living in Puerto Rico or other areas of the Caribbean who are trying to decide if they should remain in their homeland or relocate to the mainland of the United States? What are your expectations and advice for the Caribbean’s rising generation?President Nelson: We travel around the world, and wherever we go people ask, “What can we do to have a better life and become closer to the Lord?”

What counsel would you give members living in Puerto Rico or other areas of the Caribbean who are trying to decide if they should remain in their homeland or relocate to the mainland of the United States?I watched him interact with babies, with grandmothers, and with parents. HOARDING OF GOLD AND SILVER

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,

EZEKIEL 7:19

12  Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
13  And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,
14  And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.
