Resting bitch Facebook Dear Minerva, I'm exhausted by social media. I can hardly stand to log in to Facebook anymore. The posts fill me with disappointment about our world. It has made me hate people that I used to love. I have tried to spend less time on Facebook and more time on succinct formats like Twitter and Instagram, but it's hard to find people I want to interact with. I'm not an older person either. I worry that quitting social media will have some sort of lasting impact on my life that I can't really comprehend at this point. I'm torn between quitting it all or continuing on with this painful, modern expectation. Neither option seems quite right. Sincerely, Resting Bitch Facebook Dear RBF, Social media can often feel anything but social. Lately, on my own personal feeds, I've seen many people expressing similar sentiments to your own. If you have the self control, limiting your time on social media could help you feel less like you're overdosing on other people's lives. Also, what people choose to show online is merely a facet of their lives. Studies are showing links between social media and depression. I challenge you to take a week without social media and see how you feel after that. This might also help you to look at your feeds with fresh eyes and see where you might want to start editing the content you actually see. Expanding on my previous comment: It it likely that the Markets will adjust and maybe over adjust. Expecting for example Vanderbilt or Boise state to do better then they are capable of ? Causing them to not get enough points versus power teams? So many thoughts. If was easy it wouldn't be any fun. Thanks again.

The Patriots drafted two Georgia players in the first round of this year’s draft and they have one of them under contract. Field Yates of ESPN reports that the team has signed offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn to a four-year contract with a team option for a fifth season. Wynn was drafted 23rd overall Chris Wormley Jersey (http://www.ravenscheapstores.com/chris-wormley-jersey-cheap) , leaving 31st overall pick Sony Michel as the only member of New England’s draft class without a deal. Wynn played left guard and left tackle in college and offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia said during the offseason that Wynn would get a look at left tackle as the team works to find a replacement for Nate Solder. He saw time at left guard alongside Trent Brown at tackle during minicamp with Joe Thuney missing practice time after having foot surgery. With Wynn under contract, there are now 17 unsigned 2018 draft picks around the league. The Arizona Cardinals are finalizing a trade that would bring cornerback Jamar Taylor from the Cleveland Browns Jalen Richard Jersey (http://www.raiderscheapstore.com/jalen-richard-jersey-cheap) , two people with knowledge of the situation said Friday. The people, who sought anonymity because the trade had not been officially announced Donald Penn Jersey (http://www.raiderscheapstore.com/donald-penn-jersey-cheap) , said the deal was expected to be completed Friday. The trade would help fill a significant need for the Cardinals – a cornerback to play opposite Patrick Peterson. The Browns would receive a sixth-round draft pick. The impending deal was first reported by NFL.com’s Ian Rappaport. The 27-year-old Taylor played the last two seasons with the Browns, with three interceptions and 23 passes defensed in 31 games. He played his first three NFL seasons with Miami after being drafted in the second round out of Boise State. He was acquired by Cleveland in a draft-day trade in 2016. Taylor was a team captain but the Browns have been shopping him since before the draft. New general manager John Dorsey has completely overhauled Cleveland’s secondary and Taylor would be the sixth player he’s traded since taking over the team in December. Taylor’s fate was sealed when the Browns drafted Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward with the No. 4 overall pick last month. Finding a second cornerback to play opposite Peterson has been a perennial issue for the Cardinals. With Peterson one of the best in the game Montee Ball Jersey (http://www.patriotscheapstore.com/montee-ball-jersey-cheap) , teams often didn’t even try passing in his direction, instead targeting the other defender. Arizona didn’t address the position in the draft until the sixth round Charles Sims Jersey (http://www.buccaneerscheapstore.com/charles-sims-jersey-cheap) , when they selected Chris Campbell out of Penn State. The team drafted Brandon Williams out of Texas A&M in the third round in 2016 but the converted running back often has struggled when given opportunities. New Cardinals coach Steve Wilks is a former defensive backs coach with the Carolina Panthers. He was defensive coordinator there a year ago. — AP Sports Writer Tom Withers in Cleveland contributed to this report — Authentic Womens Derrick Nnadi Jersey (http://www.officialusafootballs.com/kansas-city-chiefs/derrick-nnadi-jersey)

Many people's interest in bats peaks around Halloween when they're used as scary decorations, but Idaho's bats are much more than a prop. They're an interesting and important Idaho wildlife species, and Rita Dixon, Fish and Game's wildlife action plan coordinator, recently shared her expertise about bats in a podcast at Boise State Public Radio

Most people will never encounter a bat more closely than one flying around their homes and eating insects, but in the unlikely event one finds its way into your home, here's a safe way to deal with it.

Jim Everett (left) delivers a speech at the 6th Annual Caldwell Youth Forum alongside C of I freshman Omotayo Akingba and C of I Co-President Doug Brigham.

“How many of you think you’re role models?”

College of Idaho Co-President Jim Everett asked this question as he stood before a group of 75 high school students, assembled on the C of I campus as part of the 6th Annual Caldwell Youth Forum. Some of the students looked uncertainly around the room; a handful slowly raised their hands.

“Come on, who in this room is a role model?” Everett challenged the students. “I’ll keep this going until everyone’s hands are up.”

Before long, the students had all confidently raised their hands. Everett smiled encouragingly at each of them.

“You are all role models, whether you mean to be or not,” Everett said. “And what each of you get to choose is the kind of role model you will become each and every day. It’s the kind of role model that will make a difference in your schools.”

The Caldwell Youth Forum, featuring an assembly of students from five local Canyon County high schools specifically invited based on academic success, is an annual gathering encouraging students not currently engaged in student government or after-school activities to “shake off the bystander role” and become motivated to improve their respective schools and help establish a school culture of positive change and wellness. Throughout the forum, the students undergo a number of teambuilding activities and share in-depth discussions on leadership.

“We want these students to go back to their schools to create an environment for learning versus just day-to-day survival,” said Ron Bonneau, C of I ski program head coach and Caldwell Youth Forum chair. “If we can inspire these kids to make a difference in the lives of their friends and classmates, it’s worth it.”

The forum is part of the Caldwell Youth Master Plan — the only such plan in the state of Idaho. Established in 2012 and taking inspiration partially from the C of I’s McCall Wilderness Experience, the plan includes strategic initiatives to make the city a positive place for children to be raised with a focus on out-of-school time, education and workforce readiness, safety, health and wellness, communication and relationships, and community involvement.

Caldwell Mayor Garret Nancolas was on hand to meet with the visiting students, sharing a personal story with the group about his time as a young student with a notable lisp. He told them about the embarrassment he felt when asked to read aloud during class and hearing his classmates snicker in the background – but shared the relief he felt when he received encouragement from friends and teachers.

In turn, he encouraged the students to use their voices to speak up, not only to share with the adults at their schools how their communities could be improved, but also to help their peers through hard times.

“There is so much power within all of you,” Nancolas said. “You never know how much impact, good or bad, what you do and what you say will have in someone else’s life.”

Everett supported Nancolas’ message with the help of a C of I freshman, Omotayo Akingba, who Everett spoke of as a positive example of student impact. Akingba, an international student from Nigeria, stood out among the other freshman during the McCall Wilderness Experience for his genuine interest in others, opening himself up to strangers despite his unfamiliarity with being a student in America.

“Omo has it right,” Everett said to the students. “Get involved and jump in. The worst that can happen is someone doesn’t laugh at your jokes.”

Everett also encouraged the students to set their sights on completing a college education as part of being a positive role model, impressing upon the students the importance of completing their educations as they advance into the wider world.

“Show up, speak up, stand up,” Everett told the students. “Don’t just walk by it – be that role model.”

The College of Idaho has a 127-year-old legacy of excellence. The C of I is known for its outstanding academic programs, winning athletics tradition and history of producing successful graduates, including seven Rhodes Scholars, three governors, and countless business leaders and innovators. Its distinctive PEAK Curriculum challenges students to attain competency in the four knowledge peaks of humanities, natural sciences, social sciences and a professional field—empowering them to earn a major and three minors in four years. The College’s close-knit, residential campus is located in Caldwell, where its proximity both to Boise and to the world-class outdoor activities of southwest Idaho’s mountains and rivers offers unique opportunities for learning beyond the classroom.  For more information, visit www.collegeofidaho.edu.

“Parasitic Derivatives - One Quadrillion Dollars: Too Big to Understand”
By David Hague

“I recently returned from two weeks of ‘high level’ meetings with a group of Bankers [this is code for two weeks of subsidized debauchery with bankers] in Rome. As I sat at my desk, I was hoping to motivate myself to pursue a more chaste and pure existence. Unfortunately the Polar Vortex experienced by North America drained me of my good intentions. The bone chilling cold once again had me reaching for my trusty bottle of Jack Daniels for warmth and inspiration. My time in Rome had not been completely ‘wasted’, so to speak. I had secured a contract from the European Central Bank [ECB] to research the topic of Derivatives. I was to present my findings at the upcoming World Economic Forum  in Davos later that month.

One Quadrillion Dollars: Too Big to Understand: Dear Reader, please resist your natural instinct to click away from this commentary at the mere mention of the word ‘Derivatives’. I am acutely aware of the boredom and befuddlement that this word instills in you. At this point I would simply remind you that the derivatives market is estimated to exceed one quadrillion dollars. [This stupidly large number is actually an accurate estimate of the size of the derivatives marketplace]. ($2.2 quadrillion, actually... - CP) Despite the fact the derivatives market eclipses the market capitalization of the NYSE by an exponential factor, it is not discussed, reported or tracked because it is simply too complicated and opaque. Warren Buffet’s, comment about ‘weapons of mass financial destruction’ seem to be the beginning and end of any discussion on the topic.

Derivatives are a parasitic financial instrument: For those of you who are unschooled on the topic of derivatives, allow me to explain. Derivatives are abstract financial instruments, which, like parasites, can attach themselves to all manner of stocks, bonds, mortgages, commodity, debt obligations, currency exchange, interest rate fluctuations…in short, anything. Derivatives exist in the ‘twilight zone’ of the banking industry. Like black holes, their presence and massive influence are acknowledged yet the true influence on the global economy of this quadrillion dollar ‘event horizon’ is only theoretical. The near catastrophic disasters at Barings, JP Morgan and AIG are small examples of their destructive powers. However I will offer you Investorpedia’s more clinical definition. “A security whose price is dependent upon or derived from one or more underlying assets. The derivative itself is merely a contract between two or more parties.”

You got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em, {Kenny Rogers}: One might think of derivatives as a random game of online poker, you don’t know who your opponents are [your counterparty], you do not know if you will be paid [counterparty risk], you do not know if the game is legitimate, [lack of regulation], and your opponents are probably able to see what cards you are holding, [market domination by large banks]. As well, you are making bets that in many instances neither you nor your opponents fully grasp [complexity of the market]. With each wager you are potentially risking not only your current assets, but your future assets as well. [Leverage]. In some cases you do not know how much you are betting. Imagine as well, that you play this game every day with trillions of dollars that you do not have. This is the global derivatives market.

It is all Greek to me: Alternately, as derivatives are often created as a form of insurance, think of them as an insurance policy in which you:

- Do not know the name, address or any contact information relating to your insurer.
- Do not know if your insurer has the resources to pay a claim.
- Do not understand the insurance contract as it is written in Greek.
- Must rely on a shadowy third party [ISDA]  to decide what constitutes a claim. [Credit event]
- Do not know whether your insurer is itself vulnerable to the particular risk you have contracted with it to insure.

His moral lassitude allowed him to excel: Dear Reader, I digress, let me return to my narrative. The aforementioned lucrative contract was secured by two key factors. The first factor was my friendship with Gustavo Laframboise-Pierre, the European Central Bank’s [ECB] Global Director of Statistical Creation. My relationship with such an esteemed member of the ECB traced its roots back to Gustavo’s days as a bookie for Wall Street’s elite. I referred so much business to him we became very good friends. His station in life took a remarkable turn when a senior member of the ECB, while in New York on a ‘fact finding mission’ [this is code for visiting his favorite escort] made an outrageously large and incorrect wager on the outcome of the 2010 World Cup. (Perhaps unsurprisingly, the term ‘derivative’ is commonly used in sports betting!) The only way the debt could be settled was for the banker to offer Gustavo a highly paid sinecure at the ECB. Gustavo became the Global Director of Statistical Creation with the responsibility of making up statistics to support whatever fantastical and deranged policies Central Banks around the world were initiating. Remarkably Gustavo’s aptitude for numbers, coupled with his moral lassitude allowed him to excel at his job. It was Gustavo who invented the term ‘Quantitative Easing’ as a benign euphemism for runaway money printing.

Where ignorance is bliss, ‘tis folly to be wise’: The second factor that secured the contract for me was a chance remark I made as Gustavo and I enjoyed a ‘working lunch’, with several senior executives who represented many of the world’s largest banks. The working lunch was held at Rome’s exclusive Blue Moon Gentleman’s Club. As the featured dancer left the stage I happened to mention to the assorted luminaries that I had read an article on the subject of derivatives. The bankers looked at me with something akin to awe and reverence. Gustavo whispered to me that the topic of derivatives had been discussed in a recent conference call by the world’s bankers. The conclusion reached at that time was that derivatives were too boring and too complicated for bankers to grasp. Despite JP Morgan’s very public, expensive and monumentally stupid 5 billon dollar derivatives trading loss bankers still choose to remain cocooned in a ‘Cloak of Ignorance’ as it relates to derivatives. Thomas Gray’s lament that 'where ignorance is bliss, ’tis folly to be wise' could easily be the mission statement of the global banking industry.

I had read a complete article, I was a ‘de facto expert’: Dear reader, I am not being rude and offensive in my remarks about JP Morgan. Surely you would agree with me that any large bank that loses $5 billion in derivatives trading is ignorant of the properties and risks of derivatives?  The fact that I had actually read a complete article on the subject made me a de facto expert on the topic. Gustavo, in an act of kindness, seized the opportunity on my behalf and pressed his colleagues to retain me to research the topic and make a presentation at the upcoming World Economic Forum in Davos. Thus I found myself preparing to dazzle the world’s financial elite with my insights into the risks and opportunities presented by the global derivatives market.  In a rush to complete the deal before the next dancer took the stage it was agreed that I would receive the standard banker’s honorarium of $5,000/hour up to a maximum of ‘whatever it takes’.

At $5,000/hr., you would surely not expect me to be brief: I sat at my desk, sipping ‘Gentleman Jack‘ while I looked out at the bleak weather that made Brooklyn so depressing in the winter. My TV was tuned to CNBC, as I waited for Wall Street to open. I put my crack pipe in its case. Dear reader like many of you [especially those of you who work in the banking industry], I have learned all too well, the dangers of mixing crack cocaine with whiskey on an empty stomach. [Have we not all indulged, to our regret, that particular venial sin  at least once?] I collected my thoughts and began to write my lengthy tome on the derivatives market. Dear reader at $5,000/hr., you would surely not expect me to be brief.

Lions and Tigers and Bears [and derivatives] Oh My!: I do not want to frighten you. However I will share with you some facts about derivatives that will have you reacting as nervously as Dorothy did in the Wizard of OZ when confronted with the thought of Lions and Tigers and Bears. ‘Derivatives, Oh My’, will I suspect be the words that escape your lips.

Size of the derivatives market: 1 Quadrillion dollars
Size of Global Stock and bond markets:  175 trillion dollars
Who regulates the Derivatives market? LOL, Regulation is a ‘work in progress’ dominated by the big banks.

How dangerous are derivatives? They almost destroyed the world’s largest insurance company, AIG, as well as the global economy. Seriously, you don’t remember? Just Google the words AIG and collapse. Alternately you might call Jamie Dimon at JP Morgan  and ask him if Derivatives are dangerous. Have recent regulatory changes made the world economy less likely to implode from a derivative fuelled explosion? Actually as one might expect, thanks to regulatory enhancements that had to run the gauntlet of bank lobbyists prior to their approval, the world’s economy is in more danger than ever from a derivatives inspired meltdown.

‘Duck Dynasty’ and ‘Real Housewives’ to the rescue: How much attention does the Main Street pay to the world’s largest and riskiest casino? [AKA: the Derivatives market]. If one were to Google the word derivatives, one will get 34 million ‘hits’. Alternately, if one does a similar search for the words stocks bonds and markets one will get 400 million ‘hits’. The 34 million ‘hits’ generated by a Google search of the word derivatives compares unfavorably with the 37 million ‘hits’ generated by a search of the term ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’, the 209 million ‘hits’ generated by a search of the term ‘Duck Dynasty’ or the 713 million ‘hits’ generated by searching the word ‘Sex’. One must conclude that only when derivatives are discussed by one of the ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ posing nude in bed with one of the cast members of ‘Duck Dynasty’ will derivatives receive the attention they deserve.

Reality bites: Derivatives can only be discussed as ‘Fake News’: Where can one find insights and coverage of the Derivatives Market in the mainstream media? Is Fox News or CNN my best choice? Sadly Dear reader your best choice would have been The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Despite the calamitous risk and obvious importance of this topic only Mr. Stewart and his team dared to share information with the general public. Given the outlandish and frightening risks derivatives constitute to the Global Economy, perhaps Mr. Stewart was correct that it can only be discussed in the ‘Fake News’ format.

Derivatives: better suited for Ripley’s Believe it or not than the Wall Street Journal: How bizarre is the derivatives market? How is the concept of money for nothing propagated by the derivatives market? What is the difference between a chump and a champion in the derivatives market? I will leave it to Shah Gilani in his excellent post in Wall Street: Insights and Indictments  to explain. Suffice to say that one is able to buy insurance in the derivatives market. One can then cause the insured event to occur by collaborating with a third party. All that remains is to collect the insurance proceeds. [To be clear the proceeds are usually in the tens of millions of dollars.] The derivatives market makes the Ponzi-like money printing of the Central banks look like ‘Amateur Hour’.

Who needs ‘Crack’? Dear reader, usually I needed a little help from my friend Mr. Crack to feel as paranoid and euphoric as I did at this moment. Paranoid, because it was clear to me that the derivatives market was truly a weapon of mass financial destruction. Euphoric because I knew that my research would make my ‘Derivatives’ presentation at the World Economic Forum a  groundbreaking ‘tour de force’ that would vault me to the forefront of ‘talking heads’ that pass for experts on mainstream media. Fame, fortune, a book deal and perhaps that elusive Nobel Prize would surely follow. My twenty minutes of painstaking research, had made me one of the world’s foremost experts on this complex subject. [BTW Dear Reader by reaching this point in my commentary, you surely now know more about derivatives than most bankers and traders on Wall Street. You should be quite pleased.]

David, you are an imbecile: I decided to reach out to my pal Gustavo and share some of my findings. I knew that it was 3:30 in the afternoon in Paris so I would be able to catch Gustavo just as he arrived for another day of work. “Gustavo”, I intoned, breathless with excitement. “I have uncovered some startling, controversial, and frightening information about derivatives. The luminaries and leading lights who attend my presentation in Davos will be utterly gobsmacked  by my revelations. The media will undoubtedly ensure that my findings go viral. The topic of derivatives will no longer exist only in the dark shadows of the banking industry. The danger that derivatives pose to the global economy will permeate the consciousness of Main Street.”. Gustavo sighed, “David, I do not know if you are stupid or naïve. Every September when you bet $1,000 that the perennially atrocious Toronto Maple Leafs will win the Stanley Cup, I assumed you were simply ingenuous. Your comments today have convinced me that you are an imbecile. Let me assure you that those will not be the findings that you present at the World Economic Forum. Rather you will inform the world that derivatives are a financial instrument that is being used by brilliant and prudent financial professionals to mitigate risk and make the world a safer place.”

The ‘Truth Will Out’: “Gustavo”, I groaned, "that would be a lie. I cannot in good conscience, sacrifice my integrity, my honor, my core beliefs and my good name simply to placate Wall Street and the Central Banks. I have a responsibility to my readers on Main Street to inform them, to warn them, to prepare them for the likely financial chaos that derivatives will cause”. “Gustavo”, I said with iron willed determination, “the Truth Will Out”. “David”, Gustavo snarled, “If you change the tenor of your presentation and indicate that derivatives are the most benign form of financial instrument, somewhat akin to Treasury bills, we will double your fee”.

Move along nothing to see here: Dear Reader, in summary let me say that derivatives are the most benign form of financial instrument, somewhat akin to treasury bills. Gustavo’s immutable logic and persuasive argument was instrumental in helping me reach the correct conclusion regarding the risks to the Global economy posed by derivatives. So Dear Reader, move along, there is nothing to see here."

TIFF 2018: Alfonso Cuaron's Triumph, in Glorious Black and White      Cache   Translate Page
The Oscar-winning director immerses us in joy and tragedy, big and small, with equal aplomb. To that end, his story's gentility is masterful. ROMA, the much-anticipated valentine from Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity), tells a story that is so intimate yet uses a backdrop so wide of scale that it conjures memories of some of the best work from film's grandest masters, such as Bergman (Fanny and Alexander), Fellini (Amarcord) and Truffaut (The 400 Blows). Filmed in glorious 65mm black and white, ROMA is devastatingly beautiful—joyous one moment and tragic the next—and in spite of it being a Netflix production, the film must be part of the Best Picture Oscar conversation. Cuaron, who also wrote and edited this semi-autobiographical triumph, returned to his own middle-class roots in Mexico City's Roma district to craft a slight tale of a live-in maid and the family that she serves and protects. The story is set in the 1970s, when violent student demonstrations scarred the neighborhood; but as that political storm brews, the family's day-to-day existence remains in the eye of the hurricane. Rest assured, there is much laughter in ROMA, but Cuaron also immerses us in the family's tragedies, big and small, with equal aplomb. To that end, the story's gentility is masterful. What remains a mystery, however, is how Netflix will negotiate ROMA's fate during the looming award season. As the streaming studio readies itself for what should be a rather successful night at this weekend's Emmy Awards, where it is certain to take home a grand haul of television trophies, Netflix has its eyes set on a taller Hollywood hill: the one they call Oscar. A Netflix spokeswoman told me at the Toronto International Film Festival, where ROMA had its North American premiere, that the studio indeed planned to screen the film in New York and Los Angeles theaters in order to technically qualify for an Oscar. Netflix still plans to drop ROMA onto its global streaming platform sometime in mid-December. But I caution you: When you do get around to seeing ROMA (and I hope that you do), turn down the lights and turn off the phone. ROMA is a film to be treasured for its grandeur. Somehow, a small screen feels like such an injustice. …
Art About Forever: 'Holding What Can't Be Held' Grapples With Nuclear Waste at Ming Studios      Cache   Translate Page
"I'm trying to create a culture around this substance that's always going to be there." With a half-life of 24,110 years, plutonium-239 can be dangerous to humans for five times longer than the oldest continuous civilization in the world, China, has been around. It's toxic stuff, but in 2004, someone digging in a disposal trench at the Hanford nuclear site in Washington discovered a glass jug filled with a whitish slurry of it dating back to the Manhattan Project. Nuclear waste poses problems of time and interpretation, and these just happen to be the themes of Holding What Can't Be Held, a multi-artist exhibition now on display at Ming Studios in Boise. "I'm trying to create a culture around this substance that's always going to be there," said curator and artist Tim Andreae. This is the third year Ming has hosted Holding. Initially, the exhibition drew grist from the fact that no photographs are allowed inside the Idaho National Laboratory, forcing (or inviting) artists to rely on memory and medium to convey what they'd seen there. As time passed, Holding became a place where participating artists simply reacted to being near the facility. This year, their ranks include Kate Walker, Shawn Edrington, Kirsten Furlong, Marc Herbst, Caroline Earley, William Lewis, Rachel Reichert, Karl LeClair, Amy O’Brien and Andreae. On the opening evening of the exhibition on Aug. 9, Andreae began digging into Ming's concrete floor as part of a performance piece entitled "ARP (Advanced Reception Project)." Its message: Radioactive substances too often outlast materials like concrete used to contain them. The people responsible for disposing of the waste from weapons and reactors "approach with this assumption that their barriers are impenetrable." "Reverse Room," a set of eggshell-thin casts of actual chunks of concrete once used to contain radioactive material, made by artist Shawn Edrington, sets a similar tone. The exact color and texture of poured concrete, these stony hunks have been mounted to walls and pillars across the Ming Studio space. They're all hollow, weigh almost nothing and reflect a misplaced faith in durable things forced to endure a danger that lasts practically forever. Other parts of the exhibit gaze at the human side of the problem. Scientists first split the atom in the 1940s, and whole lives have been spent protesting the literal and figurative fallout. Two of them are Beatrice Brailsford of the Snake River Alliance and Chuck David of the Rocky Flats Truth Force, and Holding pays tribute to their decades of anti-nuclear activism…

Boise State doesn't run from, but doesn't embrace, epic Fiesta Bowl      Cache   Translate Page

Boise State coach Bryan Harsin doesn’t bring up the game that made his university famous. But if someone else brings up the 43-42 Fiesta Bowl victory over Oklahoma, Harsin will gladly oblige.

“I’ve been asked that question a lot,” said Harsin, who was the offensive coordinator for that epic game and now is in his fifth year as the Boise State head coach.

The film's promotional poster and trailer might have you believing that The Front Runner is a black comedy. Don't believe it. There's nothing funny here—but it is quite dark. Perhaps the biggest question surrounding The Front Runner, an ambitious new movie from director Jason Reitman (Juno), is exactly how audiences will approach this rather puzzling film. To be sure, many people will take note because it stars Hugh Jackman, portraying once-presidential hopeful Gary Hart. But, sad to say, a good many of the 20-somethings who were in line to see The Front Runner at the Toronto International Film Festival needed to be reminded exactly who Gary Hart was. "But I'll see anything with Hugh Jackman," more than a few of them said before the screening. Based on the 2014 book, All the Truth is Out, Reitman's The Front Runner is more about how far our political system has spiraled out of control than it is about Hart's failed 1988 presidential campaign. And the film pulls few punches in portraying a rather unsavory American press that deliberately chose to take the low road back in '88, pondering how best to exploit Hart's extramarital affair. Hart was indeed the "front runner," before he hopped aboard a Miami Beach boat dubbed Monkey Business, changing modern political history forever. The good news is that Jackman is in fine form here, supported by a cast that includes J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) and Vera Farmiga (so good in Reitman's Up in the Air in 2009). And while the The Front Runner gets much-deserved credit for a whip-smart script and some very good performances, don't expect to leave the theater feeling any better for the effort. In fact, it's a sullen reminder of how far we have fallen. The film's promotional poster and trailer might have you believing that The Front Runner is a black comedy. Don't believe it. There's nothing funny here—but it is quite dark. …
