Happy (Belated) Birthday Tyler Hoechlin!      Cache   Translate Page
Yes it's true!
31 years ago today yesterday (September 11, 1987)  in  (boring ass) Corona, CA
the world was blessed with the birth of none other than bae-wolf himself:

Tyler Lee Hoechlin!

💚💚💚

Tyler has been (sort of) quoted as saying that he does not usually like to celebrate his bday on the actual day anymore, as he
"feels bad celebrating something on such a horrible day in history".
He opts for something small with family if need be, saving the true celebration for before or after.

I 100% appreciate that sentiment, but I still want to take a moment to appreciate him~

Birthday shoutouts from ex Teen Wolf co-stars and good friends:

Some quick fun facts about TyHo (for those who are only lite fans:)

  • He has 3 siblings (An older sister, brother, & 1 younger brother)

  • For his role as "Alpha Derek" in Teen Wolf, he had to gain about 15 pounds of pure muscle

  • Some of his favorite sports teams are the Chicago Cubs, the LA Kings & Dodgers AND the Anaheim Angels (what kind of Switzerland kween?!) He also stans the USC football team. Basically, he's as SoCal as you can fucking get.

  • Turned down the role of Emmett Cullen in the Twilight franchise because he was more dedicated to baseball at the time

  • His favorite foods are Mexican & Italian (un muchacho after my own heart!)

Tyler's next project 'Bigger' (a biographical look at how brothers Joe (Hoechlin) & Ben Weider launched a fitness empire and along the way discovered Arnold Schwarzenegger) will have it's premiere in Las Vegas this Wednesday (September 13th) to coincide with the Mr. Olympia competition that was created by the Weider brothers themselves. The film is set to hit theaters October 13th.

Tyler is currently in Vancouver filming his next project, the upcoming Netlfix sci-fi series 'Another Life'.

Sorry this is a late post! Get those thirst gifs in!
(,mods I'm a dumb, I didn't realize I had done that =_= sorry!)

WINNIPEG -- Teenager Kadeisha Buchanan was a star on both sides of the ball Thursday      Cache   Translate Page
WINNIPEG -- Teenager Kadeisha Buchanan was a star on both sides of the ball Thursday night as Canada tied the No. DJ Moore Panthers Jersey . 1-ranked U.S. womens soccer team 1-1, thanks to her first goal as a member of the Canadian national team. "The future is bright," said teammate Desiree Scott. "Kadeisha Buchanan, 18-year-old, going toe-to-toe with some of the best strikers in the world and she scores a goal tonight. Unbelievable performance." Buchanan said it was a great experience to score but her work on defence was also key to keeping the Americans in check. "Defence wins games and we tried," she said of the physical way she challenged and often beat U.S. strikers such as veteran Abby Wambach as they rushed the Canadian goal. "Thats part of my element." Coach John Herdman said Canadas young back line did a great job and Buchanan has what it takes to be the best in the world at her position. "Shes the (Christine) Sinclair of defenders, shes that good" he said, referring to Canadas top forward. Buchanan scored her goal with a header off a corner kick just before the 35-minute mark of the friendly, and for 40 minutes it looked like Canada might finally beat a team they last defeated in 2001. The 18-year-old Toronto native only made her debut with the national team in January 2013 but has seen 12 starts with Lauren Sesselmann out with an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Herdman said it was disappointing to come so close and not get the win but he liked what he saw of the Canadian teams development as they prepare for the 2015 Womens World Cup. American striker Sydney Leroux, who was born in Surrey, B.C., tied the game just before the 78-minute mark when she kicked Canadian defender Rebecca Quinns crossing header into the corner past goalkeeper Erin McLeod. It was the third consecutive game against Canada in which shes scored a goal. "She loves big moments and shes come through and shes been fantastic," said interim U.S. coach Jill Ellis. McLeod had to make one big save early in the game off Heather OReilly and another in the second half off a header by Wambach. Then the Canadian team had to block a free kick just past the 84-minute mark that could have put the Americans in the lead. American keeper Hope Solo had her bid to tie the U.S. shutout record foiled by Buchanan. The day before the game, Herdman said the crowd could play a role. "Were not going to have 700 shots and 700 crosses, so the fans have got to be ready to really get behind us when we need (them)," he said. The crowd of 28,255 didnt disappoint. The game was also blessed with cool but dry weather, after a forecast that threatened rain, and it was the second largest crowd ever to watch a womens friendly in Canada. "You could feel the energy," said Herdman, who suggested it was a taste of what Canada will offer when it hosts the Womens World Cup next summer. Solo, who also played for the U.S. in the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, is just one away from tying Briana Scurry for the most shutouts in the American programs history at 70. Melissa Tancredi, who rejoined the Canadian team for the first time since she returned to school a couple of years ago to finish her chiropractic studies, got some playing time late in the second half. The Winnipeg-born Scott said she was thrilled to play for the first time in front of friends and family as a member of the national team. This is her sixth year on Canadas squad. "It was exhilarating and exciting for me and it definitely drove me to give a great performance tonight," she said. Buchanan, meanwhile, is also a member of Canadas under-20 World Cup team. The under-20 World Cup starts Aug. 5 with games set to take place in Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal and Moncton. Ian Thomas Jersey . Ortiz hit a pair of two-run homers, including his 400th shot in a Red Sox uniform, and drove in a career high-tying six runs to power Boston past the Houston Astros 10-7 on Saturday night. DJ Moore Jersey . - Connor McDavid scored twice and added two assists as the Erie Otters beat the Sarnia Sting 7-3 on Saturday night in Ontario Hockey League action. http://www.nflpanthersgearofficial.com/m...es-jersey/ .Y. -- The New York Islanders were seeking a positive finish to a frustrating season on home ice. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Tampa Bay Rays put switch-hitting second baseman Ben Zobrist on the 15-day disabled list Thursday because of a dislocated left thumb. "Right now, were just doing treatment and weve got to let the inflammation get down," Zobrist said before the Rays began a four-game series with the Los Angeles Angels. "As far as everything else, I can throw, I can do exercises and I can run, so I can keep my body in complete shape -- outside of swinging and catching balls. "So once it starts feeling good enough, Ill be able to be able to hit left-handed first. Catching the ball will probably be the last thing." Zobrist was injured on a headfirst slide while trying to steal second base in Wednesdays 2-0 victory at Seattle. "I knew it was dislocated when I looked at it," he said. "But I was definitely relieved that it wasnt broken, too." The headfirst slide is a part of Zobrists game, and something he plans to continue when he returns to the lineup. "Ive slid headfirst a whole lot in my career," said Zobrist, who turns 33 in less than two weeks. "And every time Ive slid normally headfirst, Ive been safe -- not safe on the play, mind you -- but as far as not getting hurt. The oonly two times Ive tried to avoid a tag diving headfirst are the two times Ive hurt myself. Torrey Smith Jersey. So for me, its not a matter of sliding headfirst. Its a matter of trying to do something crazy while youre sliding headfirst." Zobrist played in a career-high 157 games last season, becoming the first player in franchise history to appear in 150 or more games in five consecutive years. The nine-year veteran and two-time All-Star is batting .260 with three homers and nine RBIs for the Rays, who came to Anaheim last in the A.L. East -- but just 3 1/2 games out of first. "This guy is a regular part of our heartbeat," manager Joe Maddon said. "Hes the guy that puts you back into a normal rhythm a lot of times, so its no fun. But weve had to go through these moments before -- and some of our best years we had to go through a lot of adversity early with injuries. The fact that nobodys running away with the division while were going through our maladies is a good thing." The Rays selected the contract of Cole Figueroa from Triple-A Durham. The 26-year-old infielder was hitting .299 with three homers and 16 RBIs at Durham. This is his seventh season in professional ball and his first trip to the big leagues. Almeria, Spain (SportsNetwork. Kyle Wilber Jersey .com) - Barcelona snapped a two-game slide in La Liga play by rallying for a 2-1 victory over Almeria at the Estadio Mediterraneo on Saturday. The Catalans entered the contest in poor form after dropping back-to-back matches in league play to slip from their perch atop the table, and things appeared to heading further south after Thievy Bifouma handed Almeria a 37th- minute lead by slotting a shot past Claudio Bravo on the counter. The hosts held the advantage until the 73rd minute when Neymar got on the end of Luis Suarezs square pass and tucked home the equalizer with a nifty finish. Barcelona ultimately found a winner eight minutes from time and it was Suarez again playing the role of the architect. The Uruguayan delivered an inch- perfect cross to the back post where Jordi Alba was arriving to guide the pass into the back of the net with a first-time finish. It wasnt a vintage Barcelona performance, but it was enough for the fabled club to stop the rot and climb to 25 points on the season. The Catalans climb to second place in the table after Real Madrid cruised to a 5-1 demolition of Rayo Vallecano at the Bernabeu later on Saturday. Gareth Bale and Sergio Ramos put the hosts in good stead with first-half goals, though Alberto Bueno managed to pull one back for Rayo before the intermission. The second half, though, belonged to Madrid as Toni Kroos, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo notched a goal apiece to put the club back atop the table on 27 points. Malaga claimed a 2-1 home win over Eibar on Saturday to improve to 21 points on the season. The visitors took the lead through Mikel Arruabarrenas opener in the 42nd minute, but Juanmi leveled the score in the 53rd before a 90th-minute penalty from Nordin Amrabat handed Malaga the vital victory. Also on Saturday, Celta Vigo was held to a 0-0 home draw by Granada while Elche claimed a point from a 0-0 draw at Getafe. Kolton Miller Jersey . -- Its been 21 years since Joe Gibbs Racing celebrated its only Daytona 500 victory. Doug Martin Jersey . According to TSN Edmonton reporter Ryan Rishaug, agent Rick Valette met with Oilers senior VP of hockey operations Scott Howson and general manager Craig MacTavish on Monday to kick off the talks. http://www.shoptheraidersonline.com/Elit...rs-Jersey/ . The San Angelo, Texas product, who was a high school and college quarterback sensation in the Lone Star State, will start his first CFL game with the Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-4) on Friday at Mosaic Stadium against the leagues top team, the Calgary Stampeders (11-2). OTTAWA -- Already all but eliminated from playoff contention, the Ottawa Senators will now play the remainder of the season without their leading goal scorer. The Senators announced forward Bobby Ryan would undergo surgery in Montreal Thursday to repair a sports hernia. He will miss the final ten games of the regular season. "Bobby has been dealing with the discomfort of this injury since it was sustained in November," said Senators general manager Bryan Murray. "Both Bobby and our medical staff were hopeful that we could hold off from having surgery until the completion of the season, but he aggravated the condition last Saturday in Dallas to the point that surgery is now the only option." Ryan, who was acquired last July from the Anaheim Ducks, scored a team-leading 23 goals and had 48 points in 70 games. Ryan scored 18 of his 23 goals by Dec. 31 and there was much speculation as to what was the cause of his recent lack of productivity. It now appears the injury played a big factor. "Well he certainly started very, very well," said Murray on the Senators team website. "He shoots the puck awfully well, he scored some goals, his line obviously carried the team early on. He was a big part of that. "I think after the hernia started to get aggravated a little bit he seemed to shoot the puck a bit less. Overall, very happy and satisfied with his overall play and we know hell be a real contributor going forward." Ryans teammates were aware of the discomfort the winger was dealing with and offered their support. "He battled through it and tried to work through it and it was something they were trying to give him help and he played well through it," said linemate Kyle Turris. "It will be nice when hes healthy and feeling better and able to get back at it. "We knew it had been nagging him for a while and for him to battle through it and continue to try playing is something that we all respect him for." Ryans injury has created an opportunity for Mark Stone, who was recalled from Binghamton in the American Hockey League after Ryan aggravated the injury last weekend. "Theres still lots of hockey to be played and I want to make an impression and I want to stay up here," ssaid Stone, who has a goal and an assist in his last two games. Brandon Parker Jersey. "I want to continue to play consistent hockey and stay up here for those ten games and hopefully make a good audition for next year." While the Senators will have to host the Chicago Blackhawks without Ryan on Friday, they will likely have Craig Anderson back in goal against the defending Stanley Cup champions. Anderson missed the last seven games after suffering an upper body injury due to a collision with teammate Milan Michalek in a game against the Nashville Predators March 10. Andersons injury came at a terrible time for the Senators, who were still within reach of one of the final wild card spots in the Eastern Conference. The Senators lost their next five games without Anderson and saw any playoff hope disappear. Anderson has served as Robin Lehners backup for the past two games and says hes ready to face the Blackhawks if called upon. Senators head coach Paul MacLean wouldnt name his starter for Fridays game. "If called upon Ill be the guy that gets in there, but well wait to see what the coach says," said Anderson. "Its been a while. I want to make sure when I get back in there that physically I feel 100 per cent and am able to help the team achieve victory that night." Defenceman Chris Phillips should also return to the lineup after missing the last game. Tampas Ryan Malone hit Phillips in a game Monday, and the two crashed hard into the boards. Phillips missed Tuesdays game against the Florida Panthers, but says he feels good and is ready to return. While the Senators are no longer in playoff contention Phillips says theres numerous reasons for the players to be at their best. "We still have games to play," said Phillips. "Everybodys fighting for a job, a contract, trying to prove to coaches and management that you should be here as well as the pride of wearing these jerseys. Were going to go out until the seasons over, whenever that may be, and we want to go out and play as good as we can on a nightly basis." Notes: C Mika Zibanejad says he should be ready to play Friday after missing the last game. Tomorrows game marks the start of a five-game home stand for the Senators.           There is nothing less appealing about the NBA than its predictability. [url=http://ww      Cache   Translate Page
There is nothing less appealing about the NBA than its predictability. Ronnie Harrison Jaguars Jersey . At the start of any season, anyone with the slightest basketball IQ can identify roughly half-a-dozen teams that have a true chance of winning a championship. That team that no one saw coming raising the Larry OBrien Trophy at the end of the season? Well, it never happens. And while there are always surprises from year-to-year, teams that rocket up the standings over the course of a season or two without a major overhaul are rare. Its a sport where it can be a very long and hard road going from being really bad to being very good, especially if youre a team that isnt lucky enough to land a superstar, one of those players who can turn a teams fortunes almost with his presence alone. All of which makes the Toronto Raptors turnaround over the course of a little more than 12 months that much more amazing. Two seasons ago this week, the Raptors were 4-15 after 19 games. A year ago, they were 7-12. Right now, they are 15-4, best record in the Eastern Conference. Things like that just dont happen in the NBA, where success follows the obvious movement of talent around the league. The NBA is the easiest league to determine who will be good and who will be bad at the start of a season. And at the start of last season, there was no shortage of those predicting the Toronto Raptors would be very bad, and for quite a while. It would be years by the time they next made the playoffs, and by then, there would be hardly anyone from this roster still on it. Maybe Jonas Valanciunas. The Raptors would have to tank a season or two or three and hope to land one of those generational talents around whom they could build for better times. None of that happened. And yet here are the Raptors, having defied almost every rule of the universe when it comes to how the NBA works, suddenly being recognized as one of the better teams in the NBA, the best Toronto team ever, and an apparent legitimate contender to represent the East in an NBA Final next spring. Think about all the counterintuitive qualities of this team: - It went from bad to good without anyone seeing it coming - It did so over the course of essentially one season - It has no superstar player Some may be ready to suggest Kyle Lowry has become an NBA superstar, although even that notion itself is counterintuitive since NBA players rarely blossom into superstars in their late 20s. The whole thing is part genius, part accident, part chemistry and part smarts. It took luck and timing and a special group of players who dont see themselves as too good to be playing in Toronto. But somehow its worked and we continue to be treated to the kind of phenomenon that is ever so rarely witnessed in the NBA. Will Richardson Jaguars Jersey . A broadcast source said the deal is for five years. The agreement calls for a minimum of 17 regular-season games as well as the East and West Division finals being broadcast annually on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNEWS. Logan Cooke Jaguars Jersey . It was the most lopsided loss in Lakers history. Darren Collison had a team-high 24 points while starting at shooting guard for the injured Jamal Crawford. Chris Paul added 13 points and 11 assists for the Clippers, who apparently are trying to make up for decades of humiliation at the hands of the Lakers all in one season; theyve won the last two meetings by a combined 84 points. http://www.jaguarsfansclub.com/Black-DJ-...ml?cat=980 . The role: The next Lead Pastor will provide primary spiritual, visionary, and strategic leadership to Mariners Church Huntington Beach.

Meet Mariners Church Huntington Beach:

Mariners HB is a son church of Mariners Church based in Irvine, CA, a 50+ year old non-denominational church with a history of planting churches in and around Orange County.

In 2010, Mariners launched Rooted, a transformational discipleship experience discovered in Nairobi, Kenya and it was wildly successful.  Rooted triggered a resurgence of new people coming to church, accepting Christ, getting baptized, serving and staying together as life groups.  Mariners changed its ministry strategy from a menu-driven model to a simple path, and developed the Transformational Loop to align efforts as a church around the weekend experience, community life and outreach with Rooted as the first step.

About the same time, Mariners started planting churches with the same DNA:  shared mission, vision, values and strategy. Because typical church plants have an extremely high failure rate, the hope was that by developing a family of churches using the same strategy with Rooted as the catalyst, a shared learnings model would allow these new churches with unique personalities to thrive in their communities.  Initially video venues, Mariners later adopted a model with Lead Pastors, live teaching, shared governance and scalable operational infrastructure. The vision to incubate and develop healthy, high performing pastors and churches capable of becoming fully independent and self-sustaining was being realized.

Mariners Huntington Beach is one of four churches planted during this time. In 2009, Mariners HB was launched as a video venue with a Campus Pastor.

In spite of 63 churches in the area, 54% of the population is unchurched; which means over 100,000 people in our community need to meet Jesus.  We see God moving in amazing ways and Mariners HB is primed for a new leader with a passion to reach the community of Huntington Beach and beyond, to inspire people to follow Jesus and fearlessly change the world.

Mariners Church is a community of ordinary people from all walks of life courageously trusting Him to do the extraordinary. Simply put, they trust Him to do what they can’t — heal, transform, renew, forgive, provide, and sustain. And through each redemption story of each believer at Mariners, God is glorified, lives are changed, and communities are impacted in a significant way.

About the Lead Pastor:

The next Lead Pastor will provide primary spiritual, visionary, and strategic leadership to Mariners Church Huntington Beach. The successful candidate will value the heritage and legacy of the entire family of Mariners churches, and commit to being the chief champion of inspiration, calling people to follow Jesus and fearlessly change the world. They will lead a world-class staff that will establish systems and programs to maintain health through a balance of discipleship, evangelism, and outreach.

This individual will first and foremost be an excellent communicator able to teach God’s Word, with an ability to also dream and cast a vision for the next season of congregational life and community impact.  The ideal candidate will demonstrate a deep prayer life and a proven commitment to balancing the rhythms of work and life. They will be a proven “leader of leaders” who can motivate and inspire high-capacity men and women to use their gifts to further the vision.

The Lead Pastor will:

  • Exemplify a life of walking closely with Jesus.
  • Serve as primary Teaching Pastor.
  • Preach contextualized sermons through the blending of stories, scripture, and culturally relevant examples.
  • Deliver teaching that is largely grace-filled and biblically-based.
  • Offer life application-driven expository sermons in a conversational tone.
  • Propel a passion for life change through messages of hope.
  • Invest in fellow pastoral and ministry staff for their spiritual growth and development.
  • Communicate biblical truth in a way which inspires people to follow Jesus and fearlessly change the world.

What you bring:

The following describes many of the characteristics of the ideal candidate for the Lead Pastor:

What it's like to live in Huntington Beach, California:

Huntington Beach, a seaside city in Orange County in Southern California in the Los Angeles - Long Beach - Anaheim area, is an area known for both it's picturesque ocean views and city amenities. It is one of the most populous areas in the greater LA area.

The downtown district includes an active art center, Central Park, a large community park in the heart of the city, a colorful shopping district, and the International Surfing Museum. The iconic Huntington Beach Pier stretches from Main Street into the Pacific Ocean. Huntington Beach is also home to many colleges, institutions of higher learning, and excellent public and private schools.

Huntington Beach is right outside Los Angeles, the second most populous city in the United States. Los Angeles is often billed as the "Creative Capital of the World", because one in every six of its residents works in a creative industry and there are more artists, writers, filmmakers, actors, dancers, and musicians living and working in Los Angeles than any other city at any time in history. The city's Hollywood neighborhood has become recognized as the center of the motion picture industry and the Los Angeles area is also the center of the television industry.

Both Los Angeles and Huntington Beach are thriving cities with a lot of culture and a lot going on. All in all, Huntington Beach is an ideal place for any couple or family to live.

With the NHL season now just a month away, it’s time to look at what each team has done this summer and what to watch for in the year to come. Today, we focus on the San Jose Sharks.Last Season: 45-27-10 record (100 points), third in the Pacific Division (lost to Vegas in the second round of the playoffs, beat Anaheim in the first round)Remaining Cap Space: $4.38M per CapFriendlyKey Addition: F Antti Suomela (free agent, JYP, SM-liiga)Key Departures: F Mikkel Boedker (trade with Ottawa), F Eric Fehr (free agent, Minnesota), F Jannik Hansen (free agent, CSKA Moscow, KHL), D Paul Martin (buyout), F Joel Ward (free agent, unsigned)Player To Watch: F Evander Kane – It was a bit of a surprise when Kane wound up in San Jose for what at the time seemed like a pretty low return.  He fit in quite well after joining the team though, scoring 13 times in 26 games (regular season and playoffs combined).  That was enough evidence for the Sharks to hand him a seven-year, $49M contract back in May and in the process, making

Trump and Obama Face Off in Midterm Battle      Cache   Translate Page
For former U.S. president Barack Obama, it must seem like old times. Obama has started to hit the campaign trail on behalf of Democrats ahead of the November midterm elections, setting up what amounts to a proxy battle with the man who succeeded him, President Donald Trump. Trump already has been a fixture on the campaign trail on behalf of Republicans, convinced that aggressive efforts in Republican-leaning states will protect Republican majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Obama’s initial foray into the 2018 congressional campaign came at the University of Illinois where he urged young Democrats to keep up the fight for social and economic justice. “Each time we have gotten closer to those ideals, somebody somewhere has pushed back,” Obama said. “It did not start with Donald Trump. He is a symptom, not the cause. He is just capitalizing on resentment that politicians have been fanning for years.” Get out the vote Obama also campaigned in California on behalf of several Democratic House candidates, where he urged activists to turn out and vote in November. “When we are not participating, when we are not paying attention, when we are not stepping up, other voices fill the void,” Obama told a Democratic gathering in Anaheim. “But the good news in two months, we have a chance to restore some sanity in our politics.” Obama now finds himself competing against the man who succeeded him, President Trump, and who has vowed to undo much of what Obama did during his presidency. Touting the economy For his part, Trump has been eager to get out on the campaign trail and has promised a vigorous effort to energize Republican voters to keep their congressional majorities in November. “This election is about jobs. It is safety and it is jobs,” Trump said at a recent Republican rally in Billings, Montana. “Thanks to Republican leadership, our economy is booming like never before in our history. Think of it, in our history. Nobody knew this was going to happen.” Trump also is stoking fear among his Republican supporters that a Democratic takeover of the House of Representatives in November could lead to his impeachment. “We will worry about that if it ever happens,” he told the crowd in Billings. “But if it does happen, it is your fault because you did not go out to vote. OK? You didn’t go out to vote.” Referendum on Trump Midterm elections are historically unkind to sitting presidents. But unlike many of his predecessors, Trump has embraced the notion that the November congressional vote will be a referendum on his presidency. Political analysts said that strategy carries both risk and reward.  “The enthusiasm on both sides of the aisle is really related to the president,” said George Washington University political scientist Lara Brown. “I think the last numbers I saw were that more than 40 percent of people who said that they would be very likely to vote were going to be either voting for the president or against the president in this midterm.” Trump and Obama already have jousted over who should get credit for the strong U.S. economy. At his rallies, Trump touts economic growth and job creation numbers since he took over the presidency, arguing that the national economy is “booming like never before.” Obama has offered some pushback on the campaign trail.  “Let’s just remember when this recovery started,” Obama said in his Illinois speech, highlighting job growth during his White House years as part of the recovery from the 2008 recession. Head-to-head battle Like Trump, Obama also has proved to be a lightning rod for voters. The 44th president was effective in two presidential campaigns at turning out Democrats but was a drag on the party in his two midterm elections, spurring Republicans to turn out against him. During this year’s midterm, Obama is likely to focus on mobilizing women, younger activists and nonwhite voters, key parts of the Democratic coalition that helped him win the White House in 2008 and 2012. “That enthusiasm is there throughout the Democratic Party and across demographic groups,” said Brookings Institution scholar John Hudak. “And for the first time many voters are going to see options on their ballot that look and sound and talk about issues in different ways, and that is always something that is appealing to a voter base.” Trump and Obama may never appear as opposing candidates on a ballot together, but they are facing off in a closely watched proxy battle in this year’s midterm campaign where party control of Congress is at stake.

The Ruling Class-- Republicans AND Democrats      Cache   Translate Page

Today, Andrew Cuomo is expected to win a resounding primary victory in New York. Think about that next time you smear at Republicans who are so enamored of Señor Trumpanzee and who-- with help from the Kremlin-- saddled our country with him. Overall, Cuomo probably isn't as bad as Trump; but when it comes to corruption... the two are in the same category of horrible.

On Tuesday, Aida Chavez reported on another aspect of Cuomo-- his manipulation of Republicans and the Republican wing of the Democratic Party-- in New York, the IDC-- to control the state's legislative process and keep the progressive agenda off his desk. He is notorious for having enabled the IDC, the breakaway group of state Senate Democrats who caucused with the Republican minority to give them control of the chamber in a Democratic state. He finally dissolved the alliance after Cynthia Nixon began her primary campaign against him. "But," wrote Chavez, "his choice to hire numerous staff from across the aisle has gone largely unexamined. Cuomo has repeatedly touted his ability to work across party lines, and judging by the number of Republicans he’s hired for key positions in his administration, he’s right.
“Governor Cuomo slashed school funding in order to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy, and when you look at his staff, you hardly have to wonder why,” Nixon campaign spokesperson Lauren Hitt said in an email to The Intercept. “The Governor has surrounded himself with former top Republican staffers because, at his core, he simply is not a progressive. He’s allowed our subways and other infrastructure to rot, he’s sent out Donald Trump style campaign mailers to divide New Yorkers along religious lines, and-- working with the IDC-- he’s blocked critical progressive legislation like Medicare for All.”
Democratic voters don't know what to make of this, especially with familiar big names from corporatist status quo Democrats like Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand backing him.

And, tragically, Cuomo and New York aren't the only blue states where these kinds of shenanigans go on to thwart the progressive vision. When Kevin de León passed a Medicare-for-All type bill in the state Senate last year, Governor Brown call his lackey, Assembly Speaker, Anthony Rendon, and said he doesn't want to see that bill landing on his desk. He never did. California has a Democratic governor and an overwhelmingly Democratic legislature. The Assembly has 80 members-- 55 Democrats and 25 Republicans. The state Senate has 40 members-- 26 Democrats and 14 Republicans. Sounds like a dream come true, right? But California is plagued with corrupt corporate Democrats in the legislature and what is called the "mod squad," every bit as bad as New York's IDC. Corrupt right-of-center fake Democrats like Adam Gray (Merced), Jim Cooper (Elk Grove), Rudy Salas (Bakersfield), Mike Gipson (Carson), Tony Thurmond (Richmond), Henry Perea (Fresno) and Tom Daly (Anaheim). They are the equivalent of the New Dems in national politics. And corporations-- like Chevron-- and wealthy Republicans finance them, just the way wealthy Republicans have been financing conservative Democrats against progressives in congressional primaries this cycle.

Gordon Getty and Gavin

A few years ago-- the last time Gavin Newsom was running for governor-- he called a meeting of Los Angeles political bloggers. He was slick and effective-- and he knew more about every topic that was brought up than anyone in the room. I would say that everyone in the room came away a Newsom supporter but one... me. To me he was an entitled corporate shill, a smart one by a venal one. A few days ago, the L.A. Times did an exhaustive follow-the-money piece on Newsom, How eight elite San Francisco families funded Gavin Newsom’s political ascent. They should have run it during the primary season, not now when we're stuck with no choice but to vote for him (or not vote). "Gavin Newsom," wrote the Times' team, "wasn’t born rich, but he was born connected-- and those alliances have paid handsome dividends throughout his career. A coterie of San Francisco’s wealthiest families has backed him at every step of his political rise, which in November could lead next to his election as governor of California. San Francisco society’s 'first families'-- whose names grace museum galleries, charity ball invitations and hospital wards-- settled on Newsom, 50, as their favored candidate two decades ago, said Willie Brown, former state Assembly speaker and former mayor of the city. 'He came from their world, and that’s why they embraced him without hesitancy and over and above everybody else,' said Brown, who is a mentor to Newsom. 'They didn’t need to interview him. They knew what he stood for.'” Like, for example, the billionaire Getty family. "Newsom was at the center of the social scene led by the younger generation of San Francisco’s wealthy families. Those relationships would form the foundation of his life in politics. 'These kids had all grown up together, or played sports or gone to school together or later dated,' said Catherine Bigelow, a longtime San Francisco society writer."

A Times review of campaign finance records identified eight of San Francisco’s best-known families as being among Newsom’s most loyal and long-term contributors. Among those patrons are the Gettys, the Pritzkers and the Fishers, whose families made their respective fortunes in oil, hotels and fashion. They first backed him when he was a restaurateur and winery owner running for a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1998, and have continued their support through the governor’s race.

They are not Newsom’s largest donors: The families in total have given about $2 million of the $61 million that donors have contributed to his campaigns and independent committees backing those bids. But they gave while he was a relative unknown, providing crucial support to a political newcomer in the years before his campaign accounts piled high with cash from labor unions, Hollywood honchos, tech billionaires and donors up and down the state.

Now the families appear poised to see their investments pay off.

These donors are mostly liberal, inspired by Newsom’s history as an early supporter of progressive causes, including same-sex marriage as San Francisco mayor in 2004. But some are Republicans, including President Trump’s new ambassador to Austria, who are drawn by Newsom’s background as a small businessman.

...Gordon and Ann Getty viewed him as a son, according to interviews the couple gave to the San Francisco Chronicle and W Magazine, and they provided him with experiences his parents could not afford, including an African safari when he was a teen, Newsom said in an earlier interview with The Times.

“It all goes back to the Gettys as far as Gavin is concerned,” said Jerry Roberts, former managing editor of the San Francisco Chronicle and an expert on Bay Area politics.

In addition to helping fund Newsom’s early business ventures, the family has been a mainstay as he pursued his political ambitions. Eighteen Gettys-- including Gordon, Ann and actor Balthazar Getty-- have collectively donated more than a half-million dollars to Newsom’s nine campaigns, starting with a total of $750 to his 1998 campaign for supervisor. Members of the family have spent more than $362,000 supporting his current gubernatorial bid.
Others who have bankrolled Newsom right from the beginning include Doris Fisher, the billionaire founder of the Gap, George Marcus, billionaire founder of Marcus & Millichap, one of the largest real estate companies in the country, the Pritzker family, descendants of the founders of the Hyatt Hotel chain and the Swig family, which owns the iconic Fairmont Hotel on Nob Hill (now a worldwide chain).

Newsom defeated an actual progressive, Supervisor Matt Gonzalez, to win the mayoralty. Newsom grabbed onto safe, showy social issues to try to claim progressivism-- like backing marriage equality. It worked.
“These are families that have been around for a long time. They’ve been very dedicated to supporting culture, supporting social causes and also putting their money where their mouths are, and keeping their businesses in San Francisco through the good times and the bad times,” Swig said.“There are guys in Washington who make fun of San Francisco values, but really San Francisco values are those that find their core in the families that have been around 75 to 150 years, who have supported everything… good about San Francisco-- social, political and business. And Gavin recognizes that, appreciates that and respects that.”

Susie Tompkins Buell, the co-founder of clothing brand Esprit and outdoor retailer North Face, remembered Newsom as a young man.

“He was the boy about town. Everybody wanted to date him,” she said, recalling that one of her daughters was in a relationship with Newsom in the 1990s. “He was the smartest, the best-looking. He went through a cocky stage, and then an arrogant stage. Now he’s in a total serving stage. He paid his dues, I’ll tell you.”

Tompkins Buell said that while she always believed Newsom was charismatic and bright, she watched him mature as an elected official, husband and father.

“I’ve known him socially for a long time, but then when he was mayor, I observed a very evolving person as he handled his problems and grew into his job,” she said.

Tompkins Buell and her family have contributed more than $110,000 to Newsom’s political endeavors over the years, appreciative of his environmental and social policies, such as his efforts to redirect the city’s cash payments to San Francisco’s homeless to housing and services.

“I’ve watched him closely and I was very, very impressed by the quality of his visceral understanding of the problems we have,” she said.

Tompkins Buell is a confidante of Hillary Clinton who has spent millions of dollars backing Democratic candidates and causes. But Newsom’s support among San Francisco’s elite crosses party lines.

“We’re one of the few long-term, old-school Republican families in the city. This says a lot about Gavin, that he gets our votes, too, because we’re looking at 80 years of Republicanism,” said filmmaker Todd Traina, son of the late shipping magnate John Traina and philanthropist Dede Buchanan Wilsey. His brother Trevor, also a Newsom donor, is Trump’s ambassador to Austria.

Altogether, 10 members of the Traina family have given more than a quarter-million dollars to Newsom’s campaigns.

A blended family of Democrats and Republicans-- who come together to fund Gavin Newsom.

“We all separately backed him and we never internally talked about it,” Traina said, noting that he appreciated Newsom adding a businessman’s perspective to the county Board of Supervisors. “It wasn’t that we said we were making a family decision. It was more that we just all agreed that we liked him and we liked what he stood for.”

He added that his ties to Newsom go back to their time as teenagers, when Newsom attended Redwood High School in Marin County and Traina attended University High School in San Francisco.

“We were sports rivals and we had the same group of friends, and he just really had a winning personality and was very likable,” Traina said. “He was very similar to the way he is now-- spunky, bright, charming, he lit up a room. I wouldn’t have known at the time he had a definite interest in politics, but he has always had the same personality.”

The Traina family roots go back to shipping magnate John Traina, who was married to Dede Buchanan and then romance novelist Danielle Steel. Buchanan, whose great-grandfather founded Dow Chemical, later married real estate magnate Alfred Wilsey. She remains a major philanthropic force in the city, notably raising more than $200 million to rebuild the earthquake-damaged De Young Museum.

Richard Guggenhime, a prominent San Francisco attorney who provides financial advice to wealthy families, has spent four decades working for various civic boards. Currently on the city’s airport commission, a position to which Newsom first appointed him, Guggenhime has given Newsom more than $30,000 in his bid to become governor. In 1998, his wife, Judy, now chairwoman of the San Francisco General Hospital foundation board, gave Newsom $250 to help kickstart his supervisor campaign.

Richard Guggenhime did not respond to a request for comment.

Roberts, the Chronicle’s former managing editor, said the role of San Francisco’s most prominent families in public life has shifted over the years. They have largely stopped seeking public seats, but still try to control the levers of power.

The longtime support for Newsom underscores that point.

“They phased out of any public visibility. But behind the scenes, they were still the ruling class,” Roberts said.

If this is the end for Joe Mauer, his retirement will be similar to other Twins greats      Cache   Translate Page
The end of a career comes for every athlete at some point, and Joe Mauer is reportedly giving great consideration to whether that time is coming in a few weeks for him. Per La Velle E. Neal’s reporting, Mauer is mulling retirement. The most telling quote from the piece, at least to me, was when Neal reminded Mauer that six months ago it sounded like he was pretty sure about playing in 2019 and beyond. “Yeah, a lot can change in six months. Personally, professionally, physically,” Mauer said. Personally, the Mauers have a third child due in a couple months. Professionally, Mauer has reverted to 2014-16 form after a stronger (though not vintage) 2017 season. Physically, he’s dealt with another concussion this season that caused him to miss time. He had a .775 OPS at the time he dove for a ball in Anaheim on May 11, a play that led to a cervical strain, concussion and month-long stint on the DL. Since then, Mauer has a .695 OPS. If this does end up being it for Mauer, whose eight-year, $184 million contract expires after this season, his career arc will end up looking quite a bit like that of several other all-time Twins greats. Let’s take a look at five others, how their careers finished and how they might offer examples for what Mauer should or shouldn’t do: *Harmon Killebrew: Killer had his last great season at age 35 (28 homers, AL-best 119 RBI), was productive again at age 36 and then hit a sharp decline at age 37. He hung on until age 39, playing his final year with the Kansas City Royals in 1975. Mauer hardly seems like the type who would want to play for another team. And while he’s not at the top of his game right now he also might not want to decline further, as Killebrew did (hitting .199 his final year). *Tony Oliva: His eight years between 1964-71 are Hall of Fame-worthy, but knee problems — exacerbated in 1971 — put Tony O. on a declining path starting at age 33 in 1972. He held on until age 37, which might have been a year or two too long considering he hit just .211 with a.495 OPS that last year. Mauer’s career arc is very similar, even if their career-defining injuries were different. *Kirby Puckett: One of the biggest and saddest what-ifs in Twins history is the story of Puckett, who absolutely mashed at age 35 in 1995 and then never played again because of the loss of vision in one eye. If Mauer was still producing like Puckett was at his age 35 season (Kirby hit .314 with an .894 OPS), I imagine he would still be itching to play. *Kent Hrbek: Nagging injuries limited Hrbek to an average of 105 games his final three seasons, and while his production didn’t decline sharply he was on the downswing (.789 OPS his final three years, compared to .862 the previous 10) when he retired at age 34 in 1994 in the midst of MLB’s labor dispute. Hrbek has parallels to Mauer in being a native Minnesotan who played his entire career with the Twins. *Justin Morneau: Unfortunately this might be the most apt comparison of all. Morneau was having an MVP-caliber season in 2010 — hitting .345 with a 1.055 OPS — when a concussion sliding into second base altered his trajectory. He was 29 at the time of the injury, and while he later rebounded to win a batting title at age 33 with Colorado — much like Mauer’s rebound season last year — Morneau eventually retired at age 35. Mauer was 30 and still highly productive when a foul tip on Aug. 19, 2013 produced the concussion that changed his career forever. Will he retire at age 35 like his friend and former teammate?

It was a tough weekend for the Colorado Avalanche in Vegas, but what else is new.

Mind Blowing Highway Interchanges, Flyovers Around The World (Photos)      Cache   Translate Page

Interchanges are great, because unlike standard intersections, they allow free flow of intersecting roads rather than having to stop at traffic lights or roundabouts.

But sometimes interchanges can be extremely complicated with many junctions and even several levels (those are called stack interchanges).

Such a complicated interchange is sometimes nicknamed “Spaghetti Junction“.

Take a look at these photos of mind-blowing interchanges.

D-Camps Improving Success Rate      Cache   Translate Page
Freestyle bullfighters gain key tools through the BFO Every true athlete knows that having a good coach is instrumental to developing the skills necessary to compete. For the rising stars of Bullfighters Only, that intense training comes in the form of the BFO Development Camps. A quick look at the Pendleton Whisky World Standings reveals just how successful the D-Camps have been, with several graduates showing success including Dayton Spiel, Colt Oder, Chance Moorman, Justin Ward, Andrès Gonzalez, Riley McKetterick and more. “The camp helped me by beating the fear of going up against a Mexican fighting bull,” said Gonzalez, who attended the D-Camp in San Bernardino, Calif., in the spring of 2017. “It made me more aggressive toward the bulls and taught me techniques as far as throwing fakes and making rounds with a bull. “Mostly, though, it just helped me be more confident.” Gonzalez showcased that confidence on Labor Day weekend by winning the BFO stops at both Anaheim, Calif., and Fresno, Calif. He’s just another of the young guns who are bringing their talent to the premier freestyle bullfights in the game. Others will have those opportunities at the upcoming D-Camp in Decatur, Texas, on Oct. 26-28.... Continue Reading
No More Excuses For The Dallas Stars      Cache   Translate Page
from Tim Cowlishaw of the Dallas Morning News, Jim Montgomery will be the third coach to try to turn the Benn-Seguin combination into a winning parlay for the playoffs. Lindy Ruff got this team to the second round in 2016 when Seguin was injured for all but one playoff game. Otherwise, the pair made one trip to the playoffs in 2014 but lost in six games to Anaheim. Seguin drank from the Stanley Cup as a 19 year old in Boston. He has gone on to play in All-Star Games, buy Mike Modano's house and become a star in Dallas. But he hasn't played hockey in May here, let alone June. It's on GM Jim Nill, who did little this off-season to improve the club, to see that this absence from Seguin's resume doesn't last much longer. And since San Jose traded Thurday for defenseman Erik Karlsson, an elite player the Stars had pursued, signing Seguin is just the beginning of Nill's task to make this team competitive. more
