Sjö-Gunnarsbo Sanatorium in Marbäck, Sweden      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Sjö-Gunnarsbo sanatorium

Tuberculosis was once a widespread disease causing millions of deaths wherever it struck. Before the discovery of antibiotics, fresh air and nutritious food were believed to be the best treatment. Sweden, like many other countries, followed this recommendation and had sanatoriums built across the country.

Ivar Tengbom, a well-known Swedish architect in the early 20th century, was given the task of designing a tuberculosis sanatorium that would be located in the west of Sweden. Tengbom had personal experience with the disease, having lost two siblings and one of his lungs to the epidemic.

The Sjö-Gunnarsbo sanatorium was built between 1914 and 1916, and included many top modern facilities like an X-Ray machine, a laboratory, a light treatment room, and rooms where patients could swim. The building was fully electrified and featured water closets and clean drinking water from its own well.

The idea behind the treatment might have been well-intended, but unfortunately proved ineffective. Even under the best conditions, 50 percent of the patients entering the sanitarium would be dead within five years. The facility was eventually abandoned, and the buildings are now hauntingly empty.

Bag of sex toys shuts down Berlin airport after it’s mistaken for a bomb      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
They’ll cause explosions all right, but sex toys aren’t on the list of devices prohibited to take on board of aircraft. But you can expect security personnel to shut down an airport in case they think the sex toys you wanted to take on your travels look like bombs, especially if you’re reluctant to explain what they really are. That’s exactly what happened on Tuesday in Germany at the Schönefeld Airport in Berlin. Various sex toys, including a vibrator, were thought to be a bomb, CNN explains. The entire affair resulted in the closure of a terminal, as security personnel tried to determine what they were dealing with. “Suspicious content in a luggage piece” was discovered during routine X-rays, the Berlin police relayed. But it was unclear what the bag contained, and an alert was issued shortly before 11:00 AM local time. The D terminal was closed as the police kept investigating the matter. The owner of the bag was called over the speaker system, but he was too embarrassed to acknowledge the contents of his luggage. He said the bag contained “technical stuff.” That’s technically true, but it’s probably not the kind of explanation people looking for a bomb would appreciate. The authorities determined they were sex toys after an hour-long investigation that included a bomb squad. On the same day, Germany’s busiest airport was evacuated after a family tested positive for explosives and was allowed to leave the security area. The Frankfurt incident affected over 7,000 passengers. The moral of the story is that security seems to be working just fine on German airports. The other lesson for those of you who enjoy the little thrills of life, sex toys included, is to be prepared to explain why they are to airport security personnel. In fact, if you’re too embarrassed to admit you’re carrying a bunch of sex toys in your hold or carry-on luggage, then you probably shouldn’t take them with you in the first place.

Radon Inversion via Deep Learning. (arXiv:1808.03015v1 [cs.CV])      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Authors: Ji He, Jianhua Ma

Radon transform is widely used in physical and life sciences and one of its major applications is the X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT), which is significant in modern health examination. The Radon inversion or image reconstruction is challenging due to the potentially defective radon projections. Conventionally, the reconstruction process contains several ad hoc stages to approximate the corresponding Radon inversion. Each of the stages is highly dependent on the results of the previous stage. In this paper, we propose a novel unified framework for Radon inversion via deep learning (DL). The Radon inversion can be approximated by the proposed framework with an end-to-end fashion instead of processing step-by-step with multiple stages. For simplicity, the proposed framework is short as iRadonMap (inverse Radon transform approximation). Specifically, we implement the iRadonMap as an appropriative neural network, of which the architecture can be divided into two segments. In the first segment, a learnable fully-connected filtering layer is used to filter the radon projections along the view-angle direction, which is followed by a learnable sinusoidal back-projection layer to transfer the filtered radon projections into an image. The second segment is a common neural network architecture to further improve the reconstruction performance in the image domain. The iRadonMap is overall optimized by training a large number of generic images from ImageNet database. To evaluate the performance of the iRadonMap, clinical patient data is used. Qualitative results show promising reconstruction performance of the iRadonMap.

In reply to The wonderful no-security airport terminal

This is very much the way sea planes work over in the pacific northwest. You show up 20 mins prior to departure and off you go. No metal detectors or X-rays needed. Wonderful. I assume the FAA has designed the "airport" low risk, so that's why they don't scan passengers. Each sea plane carries 10-20 passengers.

It can't have been Glock. The real Glock 7 is either an entrenching tool or a field lantern, depending on sources. Gaston Glock's first firearm design was the 17, and by weight is half metal. And the frame has enough density and added material to show on a x-ray machine. And ammunition is still metallic.

Comment on Facebook bans 3D printed gun content, removes blueprint links by jwn0001      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
It's really more of a public services than anything else! The 3D printed gun is a political statement, not a movement to make plastic firearms. I am disappointed in the media for being so naive about this. But perhaps this isn't so much naivety aw it is marketing (or anti marketing). Really the worst thing about the plastic guns is that they can and likely will explode on repeated use. One really nasty thing about ABS plastic or PVC is that it is REALLY hard to see on X-Rays of the human body. SO after one of these grenades detonates in your hand, the doctor in the ER has to probe for the slivers of likely razor sharp tiny plastic shards embedded in your body using a tool much like a dentist pick like they use to clean your teeth! Sounds like fun huh? Ready to go to the range yet?? The whole point is whether or not it is legal and lawful to create things in your home or if this can be regulated. 3D printing itself has the potential to literally change the way we shop, buy and make things, and really is a disruptive technology in it's own right. I used this analogy. Foreign ships come to the USA to buy crude oil to take home and make plastic. In their country, the cheaper labor creates plastic things for retail (toys, plates, plastic silverware, etc) then ships this back across the ocean where it is hauled by truck to Wal*Mart )(or other retailers) and is then unpacked, shelved and readied for sale. The customer drives to the store, buys the plastic "thing" and takes it home. When it breaks it goers into a plastic bag and into the landfill to stay for many many years. A whole lot of cost of this product goes into the shipping, handling and mfg. What if at home you could have a small plastic shredder (size of a coffee machine) which shreds the broken plastic toy, plate, or whatever, into plastic pellets or powder. The powder can then be remelted and used as base material for a 3D printer to create a brand new "whatever it is" and the object is as good as new. This isn't science fiction, it can and is being done today.

COSMOS Survey

This image shows data from a massive observing campaign that includes NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. These Chandra data have provided strong evidence for the existence of so-called intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs). Combined with a separate study also using Chandra data, these results may allow astronomers to better understand how the very largest black holes in the early Universe formed, as described in our latest press release.

The COSMOS ("cosmic evolution survey") Legacy Survey has assembled data from some of the world's most powerful telescopes spanning the electromagnetic spectrum. This image contains Chandra data from this survey, equivalent to about 4.6 million seconds of observing time. The colors in this image represent different levels of X-ray energy detected by Chandra. Here the lowest-energy X-rays are red, the medium band is green, and the highest-energy X-rays observed by Chandra are blue. Most of the colored dots in this image are black holes. Data from the Spitzer Space Telescope are shown in grey. The inset shows an artist's impression of a growing black hole in the center of a galaxy. A disk of material surrounding the black hole and a jet of outflowing material are also depicted.

Two new separate studies using the Chandra COSMOS-Legacy survey data and other Chandra data have independently collected samples of IMBHs, an elusive category of black holes in between stellar mass black holes and the supermassive black holes found in the central regions of massive galaxies.

One team of researchers identified 40 growing black holes in dwarf galaxies. Twelve of them are located at distances more than five billion light years from Earth and the most distant is 10.9 billion light years away, the most distant growing black hole in a dwarf galaxy ever seen. Most of these sources are likely IMBHs with masses that are about 10,000 to 100,000 times that of the Sun.

A second team found a separate, important sample of possible IMBHs in galaxies that are closer to Earth. In this sample, the most distant IMBH candidate is about 2.8 billion light years from Earth and about 90% of the IMBH candidates they discovered are no more than 1.3 billion light years away.

They detected 305 galaxies in their survey with black hole masses less than 300,000 solar masses. Observations with Chandra and with ESA's XMM-Newton of a small part of this sample show that about half of the 305 IMBH candidates are likely to be valid IMBHs. The masses for the ten sources detected with X-ray observations were determined to be between 40,000 and 300,000 times the mass of the Sun.

IMBHs may be able to explain how the very biggest black holes, the supermassive ones, were able to form so quickly after the Big Bang. One leading explanation is that supermassive black holes grow over time from smaller black holes "seeds" containing about a hundred times the Sun's mass. Some of these seeds should merge to form IMBHs. Another explanation is that they form very quickly from the collapse of a giant cloud of gas with a mass equal to hundreds of thousands of times that of the Sun. There is yet to be a consensus among astronomers on the role IMBHs may play.

A paper describing the COSMOS-Legacy result by Mar Mezcua (Institute for Space Sciences, Spain) and colleagues was published in the August issue of the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society and is available online. The paper by Igor Chilingarian (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics) on the closer IMBH sample is being published in the August 10th issue of The Astrophysical Journal and is available online.

NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, manages the Chandra program for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, controls Chandra's science and flight operations.

After Indonesia quake, injured still struggling      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
KAYANGAN, Indonesia – Falling rubble instantly paralyzed Mary Andoni from the waist down when Indonesia was shaken by one of its deadliest earthquakes in years. But there was nobody in her destroyed village to get her the help she needed. There were too many other injured and dead.

“It was overwhelming,” Andoni’s 35-year-old brother-in-law, Ilham, said of the chaotic aftermath of Sunday’s magnitude 7.0 quake on the island of Lombok. “There was no way to get her out.”

On Thursday, paramedics finally evacuated Andoni to a hospital in the city of Mataram. But her story underscores the challenges facing this devastated region: Four days after the earthquake killed hundreds of people and displaced 270,000 more, injured survivors in remote areas cut off by landslides and broken bridges still are emerging from the ruined countryside, struggling to reach the doctors they desperately need.

And the crisis is not over.

Lombok has been hit by more than 300 aftershocks, including a 5.9 magnitude tremor Thursday that brought down more buildings and injured 24 more people, authorities said. In northern Lombok, some people leaped from their vehicles on a traffic-jammed road when the aftershock hit, while an elderly woman standing in the back of a pickup truck wailed “God is Great.” An Associated Press reporter in Mataram saw about a dozen people being treated at a hospital while fearful staff moved patients outside.

At a first aid station in Kayangan that was set up under a sprawling tent because of the threat of more quakes, Dr. Mohammad Akbar said medical staff were combing the region with an ambulance to locate injured people.

By 3 p.m., he said, they had found and treated 40 people with broken bones, cuts and bruises. Many were also dehydrated.

“They’re all stuck in isolated areas with little or no transport,” Akbar said. “They’re too weak to get here on their own, so we need to go to them.”

Akbar said paramedics were treating infections caused by traumatic wounds, and they were reaching some victims too late. One 3-year-old girl, he said, had been found with a wounded foot that had turned pale blue after being untended for three days.

Doctors at another hospital on Lombok eventually had to amputate it.

Because the nearest hospital – located an hour’s drive away in Tanjung – was wrecked by the quake, Akbar’s aid station is referring patients to an Indonesian naval ship now docked at an empty port on the coast.

Navy Col. Andi Abdullah, an orthopedic surgeon stationed on the huge gray vessel, said military doctors had received 46 survivors so far, and performed surgery on 16.

Two of the ship’s wards were filled by patients lying on stretchers with IV drips in their arms. Outside, in the hallways, family members who accompanied them sat barefoot on mats, staring blankly at the ship’s walls.

“Their physical wounds are easy to treat. But their psychological wounds are much harder to heal, especially for those who lost loved ones,” Abdullah said.

“When we ask ‘what happened to you?’ most of them break down. ... They find it very hard to describe what they went through. They have no words.”

Abdullah said several of the patients had waited to seek medical help because they had run high into the hills fearing the quake would spawn a tsunami, and stayed there for days.

One of them, a 45-year-old woman named Supisah, who like many Indonesians uses only one name, said her leg had been shattered by a collapsing wall. After a villager helped carry her to higher ground, she did not make it back down until Wednesday.

In Kopang Daya, injured villagers also got their first proper treatment Thursday after medics arrived with a portable X-ray machine and other supplies. They tended to an elderly woman with an injured face and hips who had been knocked over by her grandson as they scrambled from their house.

Kayangan appears to be one of Lombok’s hardest-hit areas. Associated Press journalists who visited Thursday saw mile after mile of homes by the road that were completely flattened. One family had put down mats and mattresses on a cleared rectangle to sleep on; towering around them were piles of broken wood and shards of concrete, the crushed remains of their home.

Akbar’s aid station is the only one in the vicinity, and it’s more than half an hour drive away.

One 9-year-old girl who had been brought there by her father closed her eyes and screamed in pain as the paramedic wrapped white gauze around a pair of splints that ran the length of her broken leg.

“Does it hurt, is this too tight?” the medical worker asked.

“It hurts,” the girl replied, gripping her pink shirt. “It hurts so much.”

Andoni, the woman who was paralyzed in the quake, lay on an adjacent bed waiting for an ambulance to take her to Mataram.

Her brother-in-law said he found her buried from the head down in the rubble of her home on Sunday night. She had saved her 5-month-old daughter’s life by cradling her against her breast as concrete smashed into her back, likely fracturing her spine.

The extent of her injuries was unclear, and Ilham said their village – Pakmayong – was consumed by chaotic scenes. Several people helped him carry Andoni on a blanket that acted as a stretcher to an open field where they stayed for days.

“There were so many wounded, they all needed help,” said Ilham, who also helped bury the bodies of three of his neighbors. “Everybody was in shock.”

The day after the quake, they ate nothing, then survived two more days by eating cassava. Then, on Thursday, an ambulance showed up to take Andoni to the clinic in Kayangan.

“It’s been horrible, like doomsday,” Ilham said after she left. “The local government can’t handle this on its own. They need help, too.”

Nationals Top Braves 6-3      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Gio Gonzalez pitched seven strong innings and earned his first victory since May 28 to help the Washington Nationals defeat the Atlanta Braves 6-3 Thursday to secure a four-game split.

The Nationals moved within 5 1/2 games of idle Philadelphia in the National League East. The Braves fell a game behind the Phillies.

Gonzalez (7-8) snapped a personal seven-game losing streak and had gone 11 consecutive starts without a victory. He allowed three hits and one walk while striking out three. Nick Markakis' solo homer to lead off the second was the lone run he allowed.

Atlanta starter Anibal Sanchez pitched two scoreless innings but left after getting hit in the left calf by a grounder from Michael Taylor.

He was replaced by Wes Parsons (0-1), who yielded a bases-loaded walk to Juan Soto and a sacrifice fly by Anthony Rendon as Washington went ahead.

Taylor homered to left in the fourth to bump Washington's lead to 3-1, and Daniel Murphy added an RBI double in the sixth.

Ronald Acuna Jr.'s one-out homer in the eighth pulled Atlanta within two runs, but the Nationals got RBIs from Ryan Zimmerman and Matt Reynolds in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-2.

Washington outfielder Bryce Harper was scratched from the lineup with right knee soreness. Atlanta reliever Dan Winkler hit Harper just below the right knee in the seventh inning on Wednesday night. Nationals manager Dave Martinez said X-rays on Harper were negative.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Braves: 3B Johan Camargo was out of the starting lineup for the first time since July 14. He struck out as a pinch hitter to end the game. Charlie Culberson filled in at third for Camargo.

Nationals: Martinez said RHP Stephen Strasburg (cervical nerve impingement) will throw at least one more bullpen session before the team decides whether he is ready for a minor league rehabilitation start. Strasburg has not pitched for Washington since July 20.

UP NEXT

Braves: RHP Kevin Gausman (0-1, 5.40 ERA) makes his second start since his acquisition from Baltimore as Atlanta returns home to open a three-game series with Milwaukee.

Nationals: Washington begins a three-game series in Chicago against the Cubs with RHP Jeremy Hellickson (5-2, 3.56) getting the nod.

3-D Measurement of Rollable Fiber Ribbons in 1000-Fiber Cable and Calculated Fiber Reliability      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
We propose a technique for the 3-D measurement of fiber position to allow the experimental evaluation of the fiber reliability of 1000-fiber high-density cables. We acquire the fiber positions from the position of peaks in a cross-sectional X-ray computed tomography image. We can evaluate the cable reliability by calculating the fiber strain imposed by bending and twisting from the fiber positions. To calculate the fiber strain, we also propose the models of the deformation of rollable optical fiber ribbon in a cable. The measured fiber positions coincide well with the deformation models that we proposed and revealed in which the calculated cable strains are almost the same as or lower than those that we estimated theoretically. Consequently, the equivalent strain is less than the allowable value needed for maintaining reliability when the other strain factors are the same as those of the conventional high-density cable.

Atmospheric Pressure Oxygen Cold Plasma for Synthesizing Au/TiO2 Catalysts: Effect of Discharge Voltage and Discharge Time      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Atmospheric pressure (AP) oxygen cold plasma was adopted to synthesize Au/TiO2 catalysts with the assistance of a simple modified incipient wetness impregnation process. Discharge voltages of 25.0, 29.0, and 35.0 kV and discharge time of 1, 2, and 4 min are selected to investigate the effects of discharge voltage and discharge time on the property of the Au/TiO2 catalysts. The results of carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation activity testing show that AP oxygen cold plasma is beneficial to enhance the activity of the Au/TiO2 catalysts, and the optimal discharge voltage and time are 29.0 kV and 1 min, respectively. CO conversion of the Au/TiO2-29-1 catalyst at 30 °C is 1.42 times as that of the Au/TiO2-As catalyst without plasma treatment. The UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterizations indicate that AP oxygen cold plasma not only can decompose the gold species formed by the modified impregnation process to form metallic gold species but also can remove some of the oxygen species on the surface of the TiO2 support. The discharge time of 1 min at 29.0 kV is enough to decompose the gold species formed by the modified impregnation process, and to keep much active hydroxyl groups. Moreover, there is little difference in the size of gold nanoparticles in the Au/TiO2 catalysts. Therefore, Au/TiO2-29-1 catalyst exhibits higher CO oxidation activity than Au/TiO2-As, and 1 min is the optimal discharge time. Thanks to the AP oxygen cold plasma method, high-performance Au/TiO2 catalysts can be synthesized simply in a short time.

Comment on Antibiotics aren’t always the best medicine. by GMichaels      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
I actually have a huge problem with this attitude. I recently came down with what was either a severe case of bronchitis or pneumonia. I hesitated to go to the doctor because I have been told so many times "don't come in for a cold - we won't give you any antibiotics - you are personally going to create a superbug which is going to wipe out all of humanity. Go home and if you are still sick after a week, then come bother us." So I waited a week. By day eight of my illness (Sunday Aug. 5th) I was coughing up horrible things and running a 101 fever. I had to wait until Monday the 6th to go to a clinic (or face an enormous ER bill for my "cold"). Doctor Kaplan of the VH walk-in clinic took a listen to my lungs, immediately prescribed Azithromycin and send me for a chest X-Ray. She then asked me "why on earth did you wait so long to come see me?" I told her because know-it-alls keep telling us that antibiotics are over-prescribed so don't come asking for them. She didn't bother to respond. Smart doctor. As she predicted, the antibiotics completely trounced the infection within 48 hours and I am doing much better thanks to the doctor's excellent care. My advice to MV Times readers: Completely ignore this article and go and demand antibiotics when you get sick. Don't suffer needlessly because theoretically you just might help breed a superbug. Seriously? Think about it. If you have MRSA or Staph, you're likely going to know it! If you don't, then take care of yourself. You either have a bacterial infection in which case you will get better fast (and don't suffer needlessly like I did) or you don't in which case you achieve nothing at all. No harm no foul. So next time I get some foulness in my lungs, I am not going to mess around. I am going to go straight to my GP or clinic or whatever and make darn sure I get treated with real antibiotics.

The 1 Flu Symptom My Son Had That I Desperately Wish I Hadn't Ignored      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

It's hard to admit this, but I think I could have prevented my son's pneumonia if I hadn't ignored one particular symptom he had. He was a typically jovial 2-year-old when he acquired the flu. He had most of the typical symptoms: fever, chills, aches, a runny nose, and a cough. Only, instead of slowly getting better, he kept getting progressively worse.

You see, when I had my son, I was a brand-new mom and had no idea what the hell I was doing. And like many new moms, I often went on Google to try to figure things out on my own before nervously taking my baby into the doctor for the 100th time. And that's exactly what I was trying to do with my son's cold - avoid being that neurotic mother.

I choked back tears so I wouldn't scare my son, but I was terrified. He was admitted into the ICU that night.

But my son's fever wouldn't go away, and his cough moved into his lungs. A week went by, and things took a turn for the worse. His cough kept him up all night. I sat next to him on the couch and as he watched a cartoon while nuzzled in a blanket, I heard wheezing when he breathed in and out. Finally, after ignoring his cough for far too long, I called the doctor.

The doctor listened to his breaths with his stethoscope. "He's wheezing pretty bad," he told me. "I know," I said quietly. "I should have brought him in earlier." "We'll get him better. Don't worry," he assured me. But the worry and the guilt consumed me. The doctor said my son needed an x-ray because his flu symptoms might have settled into his lungs and could have evolved into pneumonia. The results proved that they had. The doctor quickly put my son on an antibiotic, a steroid, and breathing treatments to be done throughout the day. That night, I slept below my son's crib on the floor. I needed to know that his breathing was OK in the middle of the night. But he kept coughing, and his wheezing got worse. I didn't hesitate this time. I picked him up and took him straight to the ER, because his breathing was truly beginning to frighten me.

When we arrived, the nurse took his vitals, and his oxygen level was only at 86 percent. My heart sank. "Do not let him walk or exert any extra energy," she told me. I choked back tears so I wouldn't scare my son, but I was terrified. He was admitted into the ICU that night. He spent three nights there, sharing one room with two other babies. The babies cried all night long, and my poor son continued to wheeze and cough while trying to sleep through the cries and hourly check-ins by the nurses.

Thankfully, with all of the breathing treatments, my son finally got better, but it took a lot longer than it should have. I feel guilty for not following my motherly intuition sooner. I tried to tell myself it was a regular cold, when deep down, I knew it wasn't. Luckily, he healed, but I know I could have saved him from a lot of that pain. I learned to listen to my gut, always. You know when your baby is truly sick, and if your child wheezes or has a barky cough, don't ignore it and write it off as a typical cold. It could save their life.

An entire terminal at a Berlin airport was shut down because of a bag of sex toys — and Twitter loves it      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Berlin Schoenefeld Airport

  • Terminal D of Berlin's Schönefeld Airport was shut down and evacuated for an hour on Tuesday when employees saw a "suspicious" item in a luggage bag.
  • The item was not a bomb, but a vibrator.
  • However, likely embarrassed, the offending passenger said the bag contained "technical stuff" when questioned by police.
  • The news has spread and spurred some fairly comical Twitter responses.

A bag of sex toys shut down an entire terminal at a Berlin airport earlier this week.

According to CNN, one of the sex toys in the bag, which contained various items including a vibrator, was mistaken for a bomb when the bag went through the X-ray scanner at Berlin's Schönefeld Airport on Tuesday.

Embedded systems are in a profound transition: from physically isolated, autonomous devices to Internet-connected, accessible devices. Designers are learning—often to their dismay—that the mutation requires far more than just gluing a network interface onto the bus and adding an Internet Protocol stack. In many ways, these Internet-aware designs are coming to look less like traditional embedded systems and more like miniaturized enterprise data centers.

Much data-center technology—multitasking, multiprocessing, and fast private networks, for example—is already familiar to designers of large embedded systems, albeit on a far smaller scale. But one data-center technology—system security—may prove novel. Yet the same needs that shape data-center security architectures magically appear in embedded systems–once you connect them to the Internet. Unlike compute, storage, or connectivity requirements though, the demands of security don’t diminish much when you scale the system down from a warehouse-sized data center to a connected embedded device.

Data Center Security

So what is it that data centers—and connected embedded systems–need in the way of security? First, they need to protect themselves from external attacks and internal subversion by their own applications. This means providing a protected envelope in which any attempt to read or write code or data will be authenticated before it is performed. It also means that all system code and data—for operating systems, hypervisors, management, or maintenance—must be strongly encrypted when it is in storage or in transit outside that trusted envelope.

Second, data centers must support the security needs of their applications. Apps may provide transport-layer security (TLS, once known as secure socket layer, or SSL) for their clients, or they may use public-key authentication and encryption. They may also require authenticated and encrypted inter-process communication and storage, often using symmetric-key cryptography. They will look to the data center for key management and, often, crypto algorithm acceleration.

There are three common elements to all of these needs. They all require a secure, accelerated environment (Figure 1) in which to execute cryptographic algorithms. They need a safe way to create, store, send, and receive cryptographic keys. And, in order to create strong keys, they need a true random number generator based on a physical source of entropy.

Figure 1. Extreme measures are necessary to protect encryption keys and codes.

Crypto algorithms need a special environment for two reasons. First, they must be kept secure from corruption and monitoring. They are the ideal point of attack in the data center. Second, they can place an unsupportable computing burden on application CPUs, driving up latency in just the places where apps are most latency-sensitive. Both of these arguments suggest a physically secure proprietary hardware accelerator.

The problem of cryptographic key management presents similar issues. Secret keys must of course be kept secret. Less obviously, public keys must be protected from tampering. If a hacker can substitute a key she created for a public key you obtained from a certificate authority, you will authenticate messages from the hacker instead of genuine messages. These concerns preclude allowing unencrypted keys to ever be in server memory or storage. In fact some experts argue that they preclude allowing even encrypted keys into shared memory.

The random number problem is more mathematical. In order to generate a new key, you start with a random number. If the number is not truly random, but follows a statistical pattern, you have just narrowed the space in which an attacker must search to discover the key. Software random-number generators, though, can only approximate a genuinely random distribution. The poorer the approximation, the easier it will be for an attacker to find the key through directed trial and error. So ideally, you would get your random number by sampling a truly random physical process, such as delay-line jitter, RF noise or semiconductor junction noise. There is strong motivation to have a hardware-based random-number generator.

The HSM

These considerations led vendors to develop, and most data centers to install, a specialized appliance called a hardware security module (HSM). In either board or box form factor, the HSM meets the requirements outlined above, with several distinctive features.

First, the HSM is physically tamper-resistant, in much the same manner as a smartcard. The package may be designed to resist penetration, voltage manipulation, thermal attacks, and even examination by x-rays or ion beams. Such events should trigger the module to delete internal memory. Ideally, the module should also block side-channel attacks such as differential power analysis.

Second, the HSM should provide proprietary hardware for crypto algorithm acceleration, key storage, and random-number generation.

Third, the HSM must have a highly restrictive, bullet-proof firewall. The device should only respond to authenticated requests for a small number of pre-defined actions, such as to encrypt or decrypt a string or to create, read, write, or apply a key. Private or secret keys should only be readable under rigorous conditions, and only in encrypted form. Two special functions, key back-and up and restore, usually to a smartcard, and firmware update, must be very carefully controlled, ideally by multi-party authentication involving at least one trusted human.

By providing multiple levels of security, from external tamper protection to strong encryption of internal data and code, the HSM becomes so hard to hack that for most attackers it just isn’t worth the bother (Figure 2). Sadly, in practice it usually isn’t worth the bother because some other part of the data center is much more vulnerable. In any case, the HSM establishes the foundation on which the rest of the data-center security architecture is constructed.

.Figure 2. Full security requires multiple layers of defenses.

Understandably, HSM vendors are uninterested in describing the architectures of their modules. But it is possible to make some generalizations about just what is in a typical box-level HSM (Figure 3).

Figure 3. A typical HSM has a relatively simple structure.

The tamper resistance functions require hardware support, including motion, capacitive, radiation, voltage, and temperature sensors. There will be a secure microcontroller, ideally with in-line encryption/decryption on the memory and I/O interfaces. It will be the job of this MCU to monitor the sensors and supervise the other functions of the HSM. It will also read some sort of analog device to get a seed for random number generation. The MCU should of course also be secure against side-channel attacks.

In addition, there should be secure memory for key storage. Ideally this should be a custom device resistant to scanning from outside and instantly erasable when intrusion is detected. But the very large amount of memory that may be necessary for key storage and for buffers for encryption and decryption tasks in a data center may make DRAM the only practical solution, and the security features will have to be incorporated into the DIMMs.

Since the firewall is so restrictive, it can probably be implemented in a hardware state machine, relieving the MCU of some overhead and reducing the risk of a successful attack on the MCU software. And last but not least, our HSM will include a crypto algorithm accelerator. This would usually be a hardware data path optimized for the necessary encryption and authentication algorithms.

But there is a problem in that last statement. There are dozens of key-exchange, authentication, and encryption algorithms in wide use. Murphy’s Law dictates that a data center will have to support a large subset of them, plus some proprietary algorithms dreamed up by apps developers. Covering all these needs with a fixed hardware accelerator might mean either accelerating only very primitive operations, as in a large bank of multiply-accumulators, and shifting a lot of the work back onto the MCU, or else building a very complex—and very hard to verify—reprogrammable state machine. If the latter approach is taken, there will immediately be pressure from data center managers to make the accelerator more general and more accessible to users for application acceleration. HSM vendors must balance these desires against the absolute need to keep the accelerator verifiable during the design process and secure during operation. Some security experts, though, argue that user programmability and security are fundamentally incompatible. If you want the accelerator to be incorruptible, you must define and verify its functions at design time.

The custom hardware—primarily the crypto datapath—could be done in an easy ASIC, but it would require special attention to ensure that differential power attacks could glean no information from the ASIC’s supply rails, and that the circuitry was protected against voltage and temperature exploits—not unsimilar to the precautions you would take designing a smartcard chip. With these provisions, a secure MCU core could be included in the ASIC as well, if the design team had the necessary expertise or access to appropriate intellectual property (IP). ARM, for example, is now offering a tamper-resistant line of processor IP cores based on the Cortex*-M architecture and called SecureCore. These might prove adequate if the heavy lifting of the crypto algorithms stays in the accelerator.

This custom design could also be done in an FPGA. But use of an FPGA raises some new issues. Most FPGAs are volatile and configured at power-up from an external memory. This boot process can be protected by encryption, and vendors provide for that. Also, most FPGAs have limited or no mixed-signal capabilities, so it might be impossible to integrate the range of sensor inputs required for tamper detection without external analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), which would themselves add to the attack surface and have to be protected. There are exceptions to both the need for external configuration ROM and lack of mixed-signal circuits, but the exceptions tend to be smaller devices, such as the Intel® MAX® 10 device family.

FPGAs also introduce some new opportunities. Because the accelerator datapath would be run-time reconfigurable, the crypto accelerator could be reconfigured for each algorithm family as needed, bypassing the dilemma of flexibility versus security. Additionally, there has been some work in creating entropy sources in FPGAs for use by true random number generators.

All of these implementation options raise another important question. With so many ways to implement the HSM, how can a user know how secure a particular device actually is? The answer is independent certification. The main standard used for HSMs, Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2, was created by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). FIPS 140-2 defines four levels of security, ranging from just an unprotected crypto engine on the weak end to an engine and storage subsystem fully enclosed by intrusion and tamper resistant or detecting hardware on the strong end. Each individual design must be certified by a third-party lab recognized under a certification program jointly operated by NIST and Canada’s Communications Security Establishment.

HSMs may also be evaluated at the product level under the international Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation (glibly known as CC), ISO 15408. This certification process is also done by recognized third-party labs. But unlike FIPS 140-2, which evaluates the overall actual security level of the HSM, CC evaluation in effect only checks that claims submitted by the vendor are supportable. This approach, which may or may not involve actual testing of the product, has been used to, for example, get various versions of Microsoft Windows certified under the CC. So it is pretty much up to the user to determine what was actually certified, at what level, and what the implications are for their own use case.

An Embedded HSM?

The challenges that brought HSMs to the data center are now present in edge computing, with a few important differences. Embedded systems are likely to use just a few crypto algorithms compared to the plethora a data center would face. And similarly, connected embedded systems probably would need to manage far fewer keys than a data center. Both of these differences could simplify the one big problem with bringing HSMs to embedded systems.

That problem is scale. Depending on capabilities and level of security, data-center HSMs cost from hundreds to thousands of dollars. The range in size from PCIe* cards to pizza-sized boxes. For an edge-computing rack full of servers that is not a serious problem. But for a more typical embedded system, supposed to fit into a small box or onto a circuit board inside a mechanical assembly, it is a non-starter. There is a clear need for HSM technology to scale down from the pizza box to chip level without compromising functionality or security.

But is this feasible? Technically, the answer appears to be yes. As we have seen, all the functions of an HSM could in principle be absorbed into an ASIC or FPGA, with the exception of some sensors and the more mechanical elements of physical intrusion detection. And MCU vendors have already offered pieces of a full solution, including secure software-execution modes, on-chip private memories, and limited crypto accelerators. As one report observed, even ordinary smartcard hardware could be used as a reasonably secure but very limited HSM. So an embedded design team with the requisite skills and motivation should be able to produce a chip-level HSM.

But such a project would face several serious challenges. The requisite skills include secure processor and memory design, a good grasp of cryptography, and experience with physical tamper protection. That’s not a common skill set in embedded design teams. The design should get FIPS 140-2 certification. But that can be an expensive and time-consuming process, as can ISO 15408, running into the hundreds of thousands of dollars and months of delays. And all this work could only be amortized across the relatively tiny volumes of the embedded system under design.

Most serious, perhaps would be a less tangible challenge: convincing management to take system security seriously enough to ignore halfway measures and undertake an HSM chip design. Unfortunately, there is still in management a great deal of magical thinking about the threats facing connected embedded systems, even in applications like power generation and transportation where the potential for damage is vast.

But there is another way. Perhaps it is time for a semiconductor vendor, with its far broader market and great access to specialized expertises, to undertake a FIPS 140-2 certified HSM chip. At some point, after a few more high-profile attacks on too-important and too-vulnerable physical plants, further progress in edge computing may require it.

EVENTS
1548 Tartaglia and Ferrari met in a mathematical debate in the church of Santa Maria del Giardino dei Minori Osservanti in Milan. In the presence of a distinguished audience, which included the governor of Milan as judge, they argued over a problem that Ferrari posed on 24 May 1547, and which Tartaglia could not resolve. The next day, Tartaglia left in disgrace for his native Brescia. *VFR  For details about this story you probably didn't know (I didn't) see this post from the Renaissance Mathematicus.

1675 Greenwich Observatory founded. *VFR The observatory was commissioned in 1675 by King Charles II, with the foundation stone being laid on 10 August. Charles II had appointed John Flamsteed as his first Astronomer Royal in March of that year and oversaw the laying of the foundation stone.  Rebekah Higgitt explains why this is "An auspicious day to found an observatory" at her Teleskopos blog.

1732 Pell equations are forever (mis)named. Euler writes to Goldbach and mentions the equation x2 -A y2 =1 and adds;
Dr. Pell, an Englishman, devised a unique way of solving problems of this kind, as shown in the works of Wallis."
Most historical authorities believe this was due to a cursory or misreading of Wallis' work in which Pell is often mentioned, but not in regard to this equation. "Pell has done it no other service than to set it forth again in a much read work," i.e., in the notes to the English translation which Brancker,4 in 1668, published of the "Teutschen Algebra" of Rahn. (Pell was a teacher of Rahn and much of the work is based on Pell's methods. Pell wsa also influential in the English translation of the work.) *Edward Everett Whitford, The Pell Equation

1846 The Smithsonian Institution established in Washington. Benjamin Peirce was on the five-member committee that drew up the program for its organization. *VFR In 1846, an Act of Congress signed by President James K. Polk established the Smithsonian Institution as a trust to administer the generous bequest of James Smithson, an amount over $500,000. In 1826, James Smithson, a British scientist, drew up his last will and testament, naming his nephew as beneficiary. Smithson stipulated that, should the nephew die without heirs (as he would in 1835), the estate should go “to the United States of America, to found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men.” The motives behind Smithson’s bequest remain mysterious; he had never traveled to the U.S. and seems to have had no correspondence with anyone there.*TIS

1912 “Some time between August 10 and August 16 it became clear to Einstein that Riemannian geometry is the correct mathematical tool for what we now call general relativity.” [From Abraham Pais, Subtle is the Lord ... The Science and the Life of Albert Einstein, as quoted in the New York Times Book Review, Nov. 28, 1982, p. 9]*VFR

1939 Albert Einstein “wrote” President F. D. Roosevelt that “Some recent work by E. Fermi and L. Szilard ... leads me to expect that the element uranium may be turned into a new and important source of energy in the immediate future. ... This new phenomenon would also lead to the construction of bombs, and it is conceivable—though much less certain—that extremely powerful bombs of a new type may be constructed.”
The letter, drafted by Fermi, Szilard, and Wigner and seems not to have actually been signed by Einstein until August 10, and was then given to Alexander Sachs, a confident of Roosevelt, who did not deliver it to him until October 30. Roosevelt quickly started the Manhattan Project. Einstein later regretted signing this letter. *(VFR & Brody & Brody); (the letter can be read at Letters of Note) They recognized the process could generate a lot of energy leading to power and possibly weapons. There was also concern the Nazi government of Germany was already searching for an atomic weapon. This letter would accomplish little more than the creation of a "Uranium Committee" with a budget of $6,000 to buy uranium and graphite for experiments.
Sir Fred Soddy's book, The Interpretation of Radium, inspired H G Wells to write The World Set Free in 1914, and he dedicated the novel to Soddy's book. Twenty years later, Wells' book set Leo Szilard to thinking about the possibility of Chain reactions, and how they might be used to create a bomb, leading to his getting a British patent on the idea in 1936. A few years later Szilard encouraged his friend, Albert Einstein , to write a letter to President Roosevelt about the potential for an atomic bomb. The prize-winning sc1802 Germain Henri Hess (August 7, 1802 – November 30, 1850)Swiss-born Russian chemist whose studies of heat in chemical reactions formed the foundation of thermochemistry. He formulated an empirical law, Hess's law of constant heat summation (1840), which states that the heat evolved or absorbed in a chemical process is the same whether the process takes place in one or in several steps. It is explained by thermodynamic theory, which holds that enthalpy is a state function. Chemists have made great use of the law of Hess in establishing the heats of formation of compounds which are not easily formed from their constituent elements. His early investigations concerned minerals and the natural gas found near Baku, and he also discovered the oxidation of sugars to yield saccharic acid.*TIS

ience-fiction writer, Frederik Pohl , talks about Szilard's epiphany in Chasing Science (pg 25),
".. we know the exact spot where Leo Szilard got the idea that led to the atomic bomb. There isn't even a plaque to mark it, but it happened in 1938, while he was waiting for a traffic light to change on London's Southampton Row. Szilard had been remembering H. G. Well's old science-fiction novel about atomic power, The World Set Free and had been reading about the nuclear-fission experiment of Otto Hahn and Lise Meitner, and the lightbulb went on over his head."

1839 Aleksandr Grigorievich Stoletov (August 10, 1839 – May 27, 1896) was a Russian physicist, founder of electrical engineering, and professor in Moscow University. He was the brother of general Nikolai Stoletov. By the end of the 20th century his disciples had headed the chairs of Physics in five out of seven major universities in Russia.
His major contributions include pioneer work in the field of ferromagnetism and discovery of the laws and principles of the outer photoelectric effect.*Wik

1856 William Willett (10 August 1856 – 4 March 1915) English builder who invented Daylight Saving Time. He claimed he had the idea while taking an early summer morning ride in Petts Wood near to his home in Chislehurst, London. He observed that many blinds were still down, although there was already good daylight, yet many made no use of it. He used his wealth as a prominent home builder to campaign for a scheme of adjusting clocks with the season and published a pamphlet in 1907. His original idea was to make four weekly changes of 20-mins each, for a total of 80-mins. The first Daylight Saving Bill, proposing a single one hour at the change of season failed in 1908. After his death, the idea was adopted during WW I for wartime fuel savings. A memorial was erected in Petts Wood.*TIS A sun dial, right, Memorial was erected in the Pett"s Wood in his honor.

1859 Georg Alexander Pick (August 10, 1859 – July 26, 1942) was an Austrian mathematician. He died in the Theresienstadt concentration camp. Today he is best known for Pick's formula for determining the area of lattice polygons. He published it in an article in 1899; it was popularized when Hugo Dyonizy Steinhaus included it in the 1969 edition of Mathematical Snapshots. Pick headed the committee at the (then) German university of Prague which appointed Albert Einstein to a chair of mathematical physics in 1911. Pick introduced Einstein to the work of Italian mathematicians Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro and Tullio Levi-Civita in the field of absolute differential calculus, which later in 1915 helped Einstein to successfully formulate General relativity.*Wik A really nice article about this theorem with references and interactive graphics is Found at Alexander Bogomolny's Cut The Knot web site.
Does Pick’s theorem generalise to 3 dimensions? In 1957, John Reeve delivered some bad news. Reeve tetrahedra have vertices at: (0,0,0), (1,0,0), (0,1,0), & (1,1,r) where r is a positive integer. All Reeve tetrahedra contain the same number of lattice points (just their four vertices). But their volumes are different. But then, in 1967 Eugene Erhart found a way to do it in 3 dimensions and more. He showed that all integral polytopes had an Ehrhart polynomial that encodes the relationship between the volume (and several other characteristics, it seems) of a polytope and the number of integer points the polytope contains. *Richard Elwes, Pick’s Theorem & Ehrhart Polynomials

1889 Charles Brace Darrow (August 10, 1889 – August 28, 1967) was an American inventor who designed the board game Monopoly. He had invented the game on 7 Mar 1933, though it was preceded by other real-estate board games. On 31 Dec 1935, a patent was issued for the game of Monopoly assigned to Parker Brothers, Inc., by Ch*arles Darrow of Pennsylvania (No. 2,026,082). The patent titled it a "Board Game Apparatus" and described it as "intended primarily to provide a game of barter, thus involving trading and bargaining" in which "much of the interest in the game lies in trading and in striking shrewd bargains." Illustrations included with the patent showed not only the playing board and pieces, cards, and the scrip money. *TIS

1901 Franco Dino Rasetti (August 10, 1901 – December 5, 2001) was an Italian scientist. Together with Enrico Fermi, he discovered key processes leading to nuclear fission. Rasetti refused to work on the Manhattan Project, however, on moral grounds.*Wik

1926 Carol (Vander Velde)Karp (10 August 1926, Forest Grove, Ottawa County, Michigan – 20 August 1972, Maryland) was born in Forest Grove, Michigan. She received her Ph.D. in 1959 from Southern California under the direction of Leon Henkin. She created the field of Infinitary Logics which studies logics such as Lω,ω which allowed for the conjunction and disjunction of countably many formulas. This work has become very important in modern logic. *VFR

DEATHS

1802 Franz Aepinus (December 13, 1724 – August 10, 1802) was a German scientist who did important work on electricity and magnetism. Aepinus' study of electricity and magnetism led to the publication of his book Tentamen theoriae electricitatis et magnetismi (An Attempt at a Theory of Electricity and Magnetism) in 1759. It was the first work to apply mathematics to the theory of electricity and magnetism and "... is one of the most original and important books in the history of electricity."
Euler was working at the Berlin Academy during the time that Aepinus worked there, and in fact Aepinus lived in Euler's house for the two years that he was in Berlin.
Other achievements of Aepinus include improvements to the microscope, and his demonstration of the effects of parallax in the transit of a planet across the Sun's disk (1764). However, except for his masterpiece on electricity and magnetism, his work was no better than competent.*SAU

1843 Robert Adrain (30 September 1775 – 10 August 1843) was a scientist and mathematician, considered one of the most brilliant mathematical minds of the time in America.. Irish born,  Adrain was an editor of and contributor to the Mathematical Correspondent, the first mathematical journal in the United States. Later he twice attempted to found his own journal, The Analyst, or, Mathematical Museum, but in both the 1808 and 1814 attempts it did not attract sufficient subscribers and quickly ceased publication. In 1825 he founded a somewhat more successful publication targeting a wider readership, The Mathematical Diary, which was published through 1832.He is chiefly remembered for his formulation of the method of least squares, published in 1808. Adrain certainly did not know of the work of C.F. Gauss on least squares (published 1809), although it is possible that he had read A.M. Legendre's article on the topic (published 1804).*Wik He was one of the first American mathematicians to do creative work. *VFR

1915 Henry Gwyn Jeffreys (23 November 1887 – 10 August 1915) Moseley English physicist who experimentally demonstrated that the major properties of an element are determined by the atomic number, not by the atomic weight, and firmly established the relationship between atomic number and the charge of the atomic nucleus. He began his research under Ernest Rutherford while serving as lecturer at the Univ. of Manchester. Using X-ray photographic techniques, he determined a mathematical relation between the radiation wavelength and the atomic numbers of the emitting elements. Moseley obtained several quantitative relationships from which he predicted the existence of three missing elements (numbers 43, 61, and 75) in the periodic table, all of which were subsequently identified. Moseley was killed in action during WW I.*TIS
When World War I broke out in Western Europe, Moseley left his research work at the University of Oxford behind to volunteer for the Royal Engineers of the British Army. Moseley was assigned to the force of British Empire soldiers that invaded the region of Gallipoli, Turkey, in April 1915, as a telecommunications officer. Moseley was shot and killed during the Battle of Gallipoli on August 10, 1915, at the age of just 27. Some prominent authors have speculated that Moseley could have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1916, had he not died in the service of the British Army.*Wik

1929 Pierre Joseph Louis Fatou (28 February 1878 – 10 August 1929) was a French mathematician working in the field of complex analytic dynamics. He entered the École Normale Supérieure in Paris in 1898 to study mathematics and graduated in 1901 when he was appointed an astronomy post in the Paris Observatory. Fatou continued his mathematical explorations and studied iterative and recursive processes such as z == z2+C . Fatou was particularly interested in the case where Z0 = 0, which was later analysed with computers by Benoît Mandelbrot to generate graphical representations of the behaviour of this series for each point, c, in the complex plane – now popularly called the Mandelbrot set.
Fatou wrote many papers developing a Fundamental theory of iteration in 1917, which he published in the December 1917 part of Comptes Rendus. His findings were very similar to those of Gaston Maurice Julia, who submitted a paper to the Académie des Sciences in Paris for their 1918 Grand Prix on the subject of iteration from a global point of view. Their work is now commonly referred to as the generalised Fatou–Julia theorem.*Wik

1945 Robert Hutchings Goddard (October 5, 1882 – August 10, 1945) American professor, physicist and inventor, "father of modern rocketry". From age 17 Goddard was interested in rockets (1899) and by 1908 he conducted static tests with small solid-fuel rockets. He developed mathematical theory of rocket propulsion (1912) and proved that rockets would functioned in a vacuum for space flight (1915). During WW I, Goddard developed rocket weapons. He wrote A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes, in 1919. Over the following two decades he produced a number of large liquid-fuel rockets at his shop and rocket range at Roswell, N.M. During WW II he developed rocket-assisted takeoff of Navy carrier planes and variable-thrust liquid-fuel rocket motors. At the time of his death Goddard held 214 patents in rocketry.*TIS Goddard is buried at Hope Cemetery in Worcester, Massachusetts, his birthplace.

1960 Oswald Veblen, (June 24, 1880 – August 10, 1960) a world famous geometer, died in Brookline, MA, at age 80. *VFR American mathematician who made important contributions in early topology, and in projective and differential geometry - work which found applications in atomic physics and the theory of relativity. In 1905, he proved the Jordan curve theorem, which states that every non-self-intersecting loop in the plane divides the plane into an "inside" and an "outside". Although it may seem obvious in its statement, it is a very difficult theorem to prove. During WW II, he was involved in overseeing the work that produced the pioneering ENIAC electronic digital computer. His name is commemorated by the American Mathematical Society's Oswald Veblen Prize. Awarded every five years, it is the most prestigious award in recognition of outstanding research in geometry.*TIS

1981 Jack Carl Kiefer (January 25, 1924 – August 10, 1981) Kiefer's main research area was the optimal design of experiments, and about half his 100 publications dealt with that topic. However he also wrote papers on a whole variety of topics in mathematical statistics including decision theory, inventory theory, stochastic approximation, queuing theory, nonparametric inference, estimation, sequential analysis, and conditional inference. His first paper Almost subminimax and biased minimax procedures written jointly with his fellow graduate student at Columbia, Peter Frank, was published in 1951. A paper Sequential minimax search for a maximum which Kiefer published in the Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society in 1953 was based on his master's thesis. The method of search proposed in the paper, namely the Fibonacci Search, became a widely used tool. *SAU

Congestive heart failure: What you need to know      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Even though it may sound like it, congestive heart failure does not necessarily mean that the heart has failed. However, heart failure is a serious condition where the heart does not pump blood around the body efficiently.
We depend on the pumping action of the heart to deliver nutrient- and oxygen-rich blood to every cell in the body. When cells are not nourished adequately, it is not possible for the body to function properly.
If the heart is weakened and cannot supply the cells with sufficient blood, the patient becomes tired and breathless. Everyday activities that were once taken for granted become challenging.
Heart failure is a serious condition, and there is usually no cure. However, with the right treatment, the patient can still lead an enjoyable, meaningful, and productive life.
According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, approximately 5.7 million people in the United States have heart failure.

Heart failure, heart attack, and cardiac arrest

man experiencing a heart attack
Heart failure comes in many forms and has many causes.
Here, we explain some important terms:
·         Heart attack - this is death of heart muscle due to the blockage of a coronary artery. The heart muscle dies because it is starved of oxygen (because blood is not getting to it).
·         Heart failure - this means the heart muscle cannot pump blood around the body properly. It is not a heart attack.
·         Cardiac arrest - this means the heart stops, blood circulation stops, and there is no pulse.

Causes

Heart failure is caused by any conditions that damage the heart muscle. These include:
·         Coronary artery disease - the coronary arteries supply the heart muscle with blood. If these are blocked or the flow is reduced, the heart does not receive the blood supply it needs.
·         Heart attack - a sudden block of the coronary arteries; this causes scars in the heart's tissues and decreases how effectively it can pump.
·         Cardiomyopathy - damage to the heart muscle other than by artery or blood flow problems; for instance caused by drug side effects or infections.
·         Conditions that overwork the heart - for instance, valve disease, hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, kidney disease, or heart defects present from birth.
The following are risk factors for congestive heart failure; they may make it more likely:
·         Diabetes - especially diabetes type 2.
·         Obesity - people who are both obese and have diabetes type 2 have an increased risk.
·         Smoking - people who smoke regularly run a significantly higher risk of developing heart failure.
·         Anemia - a deficiency of red blood cells.
·         Hyperthyroidism - overactive thyroid gland.
·         Hypothyroidism - underactive thyroid gland.
·         Myocarditis - inflammation of the heart muscle, usually caused by a virus, leading to left-sided heart failure.
·         Heart arrhythmias - abnormal heart rhythms, they may cause the heart to beat too fast, creating more work for the heart. Eventually the heart may weaken, leading to heart failure. If heartbeat is too slow not enough blood may get out from the heart to the body, leading to heart failure.
·         Atrial fibrillation - an irregular, often rapid heart beat; patients with atrial fibrillation have a higher risk of hospitalization due to heart failure, a study found.
·         Emphysema - a chronic disease that makes it hard for the patient to breathe.
·         Lupus - the patient's immune system attacks healthy cells and tissues.
·         Hemochromatosis - a condition where iron accumulates in the tissues.
·         Amyloidosis - one or more organ systems in the body accumulate deposits of abnormal proteins.

Symptoms

Symptoms of heart failure may include irregular and rapid heartbeats.
Symptoms of heart failure may include irregular and rapid heartbeats.
The following are possible symptoms of heart failure:
Congested lungs - fluid builds up in the lungs and causes shortness of breath even when resting and particularly when lying down. It can also cause a hacking, dry cough.
Fluid retention - because less blood is being pumped to the kidneys, it can cause water retention. This can cause swollen ankles, legs, and abdomen. It can also cause weight gain and increased urination.
Fatigue and dizziness - because less blood is reaching the organs of the body, it can cause feelings of weakness. Because less blood is reaching the brain is can also cause dizziness and confusion.
Irregular and rapid heartbeats - to try and counteract the lack of blood being pumped with each contraction of the heart, the heart might pump more quickly.
Heart failure shares symptoms with other conditions, and if anyone has the symptoms, it does not mean they have heart failure.

However, anyone who experiences more than one of the symptoms should tell their doctor and ask for an evaluation of their heart.

People who have been diagnosed with heart failure should monitor their symptoms carefully and report any sudden changes to their doctor immediately.

Types

There are many different types of heart failure:

Left-sided heart failure

Left-sided heart failure is the most common form of congestive heart failure. The left side of the heart is responsible for pumping blood to the rest of the body. Blood backs up into the lungs as it is not effectively pumped away from the heart. This can cause shortness of breath and fluid buildup.

Right-sided heart failure

The right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs where it collects oxygen. Right-side failure is, most often, caused by fluid build-up in the lungs due to left-side failure. Sometimes it can occur due to other conditions, including lung disease.

Diastolic heart failure:

This occurs when the heart muscle is stiffer than normal. Because the heart is stiff, it does not fill up with blood properly; this is known as diastolic dysfunction.
Because the heart does not fill up with blood, it cannot pass as much blood around the body as is necessary. This can occur on either side of the heart.

Systolic heart failure:

Systolic dysfunction describes the heart's inability to pump efficiently after filling with blood. It often occurs if the heart is weak or enlarged. This can occur on either side of the heart.

Diagnosis

Most people will initially see their doctor if they have symptoms. The doctor will discuss the symptoms with the patient. If the doctor suspects heart failure, he will recommend further tests, these may include:
·         Blood and urine tests - these will check the patient's blood count and liver, thyroid, and kidney function. The doctor may also want to check the blood for specific chemical markers of heart failure.
·         Chest X-ray - an X-ray will show whether the heart is enlarged. It will also show whether there is fluid in the lungs.
·         An ECG (electrocardiogram) - this device records the electrical activity and rhythms of the patient's heart. The test may also reveal any damage to the heart from a heart attack. Heart attacks are often the underlying cause of heart failure.
·         An echocardiogram - this is an ultrasound scan that checks the pumping action of the patient's heart. The doctor measures the percentage of blood pumped out of the patient's left ventricle (the main pumping chamber) with each heartbeat - this measurement is called the ejection fraction.
The doctor may also carry out the following additional tests:
·         Stress test - the aim here is to stress the heart and study it. The patient may have to use a treadmill or exercise machine, or take a medication that stresses the heart.
·         Cardiac MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or CT (computed tomography) scan - they can measure ejection fraction as well as the heart arteries and valves. They can also determine whether the patient had a heart attack.
·         B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) blood test - BNP is released into the blood if the heart is overfilled and struggling to function properly.
·         Angiogram (coronary catheterization) - a catheter (thin, flexible tube) is introduced into a blood vessel until it goes through the aorta into the patient's coronary arteries. The catheter usually enters the body at the groin or arm. A dye is injected through the catheter into the arteries. This dye stands out on an X-ray and helps doctors detect coronary artery disease (arteries to the heart that have narrowed) - another cause of heart failure.

woman smoking a cigarette
Giving up smoking is a way to reduce the likelihood of heart failure, or slow its progression.
There are many lifestyle changes that reduce the chances of developing heart failure, or at least slow down its progression. These include:
·         Give up smoking.
·         Eat sensibly, this includes plenty of fruit and vegetable, good quality fats, unrefined carbohydrates, whole grains, and the right amount of daily calories.
·         Exercise regularly and stay physically active (check with your doctor).
·         Keep blood pressure low.
·         Maintain a healthy body weight.
·         Quit alcohol, or at least consume alcohol within the national recommended limits.
·         Get at least 7 hours good quality sleep each night.
·         Mental stress may be bad for the heart over the long-term. Try to find ways of reducing exposure to mental stress.
·         Individuals who already have heart failure should be up-to-date with their vaccinations, and have a yearly flu shot.

Damage to the heart's pumping action caused by heart failure cannot be repaired. Nevertheless, current treatments can significantly improve the quality of life of the patient by keeping the condition under control and helping relieve many of the symptoms.
Treatment also focuses on treating any conditions that may be causing the heart failure, which in turn less

Analysis of the Genome Sequence and Prediction of B-Cell Epitopes of the Envelope Protein of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
The outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome-coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in South Korea in April 2015 led to 186 infections and 37 deaths by the end of October 2015. MERS-CoV was isolated from the imported patient in China. The envelope (E) protein, a small structural protein of MERS-CoV, plays an important role in host recognition and infection. To identify the conserved epitopes of the E protein, sequence analysis was performed by comparing the E proteins from 42 MERS-CoV strains that triggered severe pandemics and infected humans in the past. To predict the potential B cell epitopes of E protein, three most effective online epitope prediction programs, the ABCpred, Bepipred, and Protean programs from the LaserGene software were used. All the nucleotides and amino acids sequences were obtained from the NCBI Database. One potential epitope with a suitable length (amino acids 58–82) was confirmed and predicted to be highly antigenic. This epitope had scores of >0.80 in ABCpred and level 0.35 in Bepipred programs. Due to the lack of X-ray crystal structure of the E protein in the PDB database, the simulated 3D structure of the E protein were also predicted using PHYRE 2 and Pymol programs. In conclusion, using bioinformatics methods, we analyzed the genome sequence of MERS-CoV and identified a potential B-cell epitope of the E protein, which might significantly improve our current MERS vaccine development strategies.

X-Ray by Ben Harris and Steve Shufton - Book

When I was young, my uncle Peter fooled me badly with a simple X-Ray Vision stunt. It played serious havoc with my developing mind. Pete had been using his X-Ray Vision to "see through" the table top in order to identify how many fingers I was holding aloft. He hit it time and time again. I was later crushed, when dad explained that he'd simply been coding the information, to my uncle, via surreptitious foot tapping. In due course it was I who was performing the demonstration, and I've been fascinated with the X-Ray Vision plot ever since.

My one man show, HELLucinations, is my core act-the one I fall back upon for all of my highly paid professional work. Purporting to replicate the demonstrations of the legendary Dr. Elmer William Bishop, the show commences with some direct and perplexing "card reading" and then quickly moves through a series of unbelievable-looking demonstrations of supposed X-Ray Vision. These, among other demonstrations, include "seeing through" a heavy iron box to reveal which card a spectator has reversed in the deck, AND IT'S EXACT POSITION in said deck. It is a demonstration repeated over and over, the conditions becoming more stringent every time.

The show, presented in all seriousness, can play for thirty minutes or an hour and a half. It leaves the audience completely convinced that I have the powers of X-Ray Vision-even with a full disclaimer. This, my friends, is real bread and butter stuff.

Secretly, I have always wanted a "casual" demonstration of these supposed powers-something that could be performed with any deck of cards, at any time!

And, that's exactly what we have here, in THE XRAY DECK. Steve has done a wonderful job, completely solving the problem-creating a practical, perform anywhere solution for the effect. He's then gone on to clearly and concisely detail every nuance of his clever and direct method.

The XRay effect
The performer removes a deck from the case and gives it a complete shuffle. He thumbs through the deck to demonstrate that all the cards are different, and the deck is complete. Placing the deck on the table, he instructs the spectator that he will leave the room. While the performer is gone, the spectator is to cut the deck anywhere with a simple cut, turn the card cut to face up, memorize the card, and put the cut off portion back on the deck, leaving the selection face up. The spectator is then to take the deck, put it in the case and seal the case, leave the cased deck on the table, and signal the magician to return to the room. The performer leaves the room, the spectator does as instructed and the performer returns.

The performer explains that he has developed an uncanny ability to see the hidden-almost a type of X-Ray vision. Without ever touching the case, the performer focuses an intense gaze on the boxed deck. Much to the astonishment of onlookers, he reveals the name of the card that has been inverted!

But now things get even crazier. He again focuses his gaze on the box, and finally calls out a number. Again, he never touches the box. He instructs the spectator to take the cards out of the box, and deal the cards one at a time onto the table face up, counting for each card dealt. Tension builds as the spectator nears the number called. When the number is reached, there is the spectator's face up card! Not only has the performer accurately perceived the chosen card in a deck sealed in a box, but he named the actual position of the card as well!

Features

  • All can be examined-the deck is found to be normal in every way.
  • Once in the spectator's possession, the performer never touches the deck again.
  • The deck is complete with 52 different cards-no duplicates.
  • Any deck can be used, the effect can even be performed impromptu with a borrowed deck.
  • No stooges, confederates, peeks, electronics or mirrors.
  • No gaffs or gimmicks.
  • No prepared box, the deck and box are REAL.
  • Can be done one on one, or for a group of any size.
  • Astonishing, strong impact, mentalism at its finest!
Once you fully understand Steve's approach, you'll be able to perform The X-Ray Deck anywhere.

Here's what some professional mentalists and scholars have said about THE XRAY DECK:

"X-RAY is one of the most fantastic effects I have come across. I like simple, easy-to-perform effects that require subtlety and sleight of mind rather than sleight of hand. This is an effect that Al Koran would have been proud to have invented. I can not wait to perform it and I know it is going to become a magical classic."
    - Martin Breese

"Not only did I immediately absorb every last detail and nuance employed in the development of the X-RAY routine, I was blown away by the number of well known and respected names I encountered that had a collaborative role in its construction. X-RAY is an extremely powerful and entertaining effect. Watching Steve Shufton and Ben Harris concoct a recipe for a satisfying and delicious mental effect is as sweet as the frosting on my cake. Do I like it? You bet I do. Highly recommended."
    - Larry Becker

"A wonderfully clear cut plot. This is very powerful and appears utterly impossible."
    - Marc Paul

"Great idea, great routine and great thinking! Another winner!"
    - Greg Arce

    "Waaa?!?! That is fucking AWESOME!"
    - Jeremy Weiss

"X-RAY is an amazing effect that also ENTERTAINS the audience. I know the professional performers, with dynamic personalities, will love X-RAY. However, I know X-ray will be a miracle, even when performed by average magicians, just for their friends."
    - Steve Dusheck

In the end this doesn't even give a ball park estimate, or range. Waste of time. This was just another article trying to avoid the headlining question. Why am I upset? Because the dentist took approximately 12 x-rays or so yesterday, and today I am sick with flu like symptoms. How about I answer it for you? Let's go with 6 x-rays is too much!
