What's In A Name 2018 logo

With A Summer in the Twenties I've just finished the What’s In A Name challenge, originally started by Annie, handed to Beth Fish Reads, and now continued by Charlie at The Worm Hole. Thanks to Charlie for sponsoring this. Can't wait till next year!

Here's the full list of books read for the challenge:

  • The word ‘the’ used twice (The Secret By The Lake; The End Of The Day, The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time)
  • A fruit or vegetable (The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society; The Particular Sadness Of Lemon Cake)
  • A shape (The Ninth Circle, The Square Root Of Summer, Circle Of Friends)
  • A title that begins with Z – can be after ‘The’ or ‘A’ (Zen In The Art Of Writing; The Zookeeper’s Wife, Zelda)
  • A nationality (Anna And The French Kiss; How To Be A Kosovan Bride; Norwegian Wood)
  • A season (White Truffles In Winter; The Spring Of Kasper Meier; The Summer Queen; Before I Fall; The Autumn Throne)
Here are some possibilities from my TBR stacks (I will confirm and link reviews as I go):

"The" Twice
The Sign of the Book by John Dunning (3/23/18)

Fruit or Vegetable

The Witch of Lime Street by David Jaher (6/12/18)

Terror in Times Square by Alan Handley (6/5/18)

Begins with "Z"
The Zero Trap by Paula Gosling (4/8/18)

The French Powder Mystery by Ellery Queen (4/24/18)

A Season
A Summer in the Twenties by Peter Dickinson

There's a wormhole of 3-4 minute mini-docs over on Great Big Story that I could recommend but I'm just going to start with this piece on Hip-Hop's Cross-Stitch Gawd, Emma McKee. There's nothing startling about her story other than the basic fact that she is cross stitching custom designs worn by the likes of Chance the Rapper and Lil Yachty. Not really two worlds you'd imagine colliding but it works so well.

A year will just change the color of the lumber in most logs. It don’t work on red oak or white oak, you just get wormholes. Walnut will have a prettier color, if aged in the log. Most people think they are junk, I wouldn’t cut that junk log, if you gave it to me.
Alternity Core Rulebook      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Alternity Core RulebookPublisher: Sasquatch Game Studio

Strange new worlds and deadly aliens? Mercenaries for hire? Post-apocalyptic survival? Explore your favorite visions of sci-fi adventure in the new Alternity Science Fiction Roleplaying Game from Sasquatch Game Studio. Alternity is a sci-fi roleplaying game system suitable for a wide range of genres. Designed with modularity in mind, Alternity campaigns can be set across the spectrum of sci-fi genres: from hard sci-fi to space opera, or post-apocalyptic wastelands to alien conspiracies.

The Alternity Core Rulebook features a modular toolkit that you can use to build great characters and adventures in your favorite sci-fi universe—or in a universe of your own creation. It starts with the Alterntiy Core Rulebook, which covers character creation, futuristic technology, and adventure design, and includes a selection of dangerous aliens and villainous adversaries, as well as guidelines for building the universe that you want to run. Inside you'll find:

  • Six species, seven archetypes, skills, and special talents to build your science fiction hero.
  • A fast-paced combat system perfect for bringing cinematic action scenes to life.
  • All the hazards, set-pieces, and adversaries a game master needs to create sci-fi adventures.
  • Campaign design guidance, discussing genres and tech levels.
  • Dozens of ready to use adversaries, and quick rules to make your own.
  • And much more!
The Alternity Core Rulebook is the first product in the Alternity line, and upcoming releases will add even more options to your Alternity game. Be on the lookout for:
  • Protostar Mission Guide: An introduction to the hard sci-fi Protostar campaign setting with a series of adventures that explore the worlds beyond the wormholes of the Protostar Nexus. In the 23rd century, governments and corporations vie for control of the corridors between our solar system and the resources of the worlds beyond the gates.
  • The Shipyard: Starships for all tech eras, with rules for crafting ships and building characters to pilot them.
  • Xenologist's Guide: Even more adversaries and aliens to populate your campaign and antagonize your heroes. Plus rules for building PC species and expanded rules for creature creation.
  • Dark Nebula Mission Guide: An adventure series set in the Dark Nebula campaign, a far-future setting in which slowly decaying, milennia-old empires clash while distant stars are being extinguished by some unknown force.
About Alternity: In 1997, Bill Slavicsek and Richard Baker created the original Alternity game - a tabletop RPG engine for science fiction adventure across a wide range of genres. Now, twenty years later, Richard and fellow Sasquatches David Noonan and Stephen Schubert have created a new sci-fi RPG inspired by the original game. We've rebuilt the game mechanics to take advantage of 20 years of advancement and experience in the art of game design. A crowdfunding success, the Alternity line includes a number of upcoming supplements: the starship focused Shipyard; more aliens and adversaries in the Xenologist's Guide; the campaign setting/adventure series of the Protostar Mission Guide; and more to come!
