PSA: Melania Trump's parents are U.S. citizens now Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

First lady Melania Trump's parents were granted U.S citizenship today, likely through an immigration process President Trump says he wants to end.

Viktor and Amalija Knavs, who are from Slovenia, have been living in Washington, D.C., with green cards, which allowed them to live and work indefinitely in the United States.

"It went well and they are very grateful and appreciative of this wonderful day for their family," said their immigration attorney, Michael Wildes, to CNN.

The first lady's office had no comment. Melania Trump became a citizen in 2006 after obtaining a green card on a so-called "Einstein visa" for “individuals of extraordinary ability” as a model.

President Trump, whose presidential campaign began with racist remarks against Mexican immigrants, has called repeatedly for an end to "chain migration," or what is officially known as "family reunification." In that process, recent immigrants to the U.S. can sponsor their relatives for green cards. Trump has been criticized for hypocrisy, since his in-laws may be benefiting from that same system.

Wildes would not confirm if Melania Trump was sponsoring her parents. "I can confirm they are green card holders and legal permanent residents of the United States," he said.

Talking to reporters outside the New York City courthouse where the Knavses underwent their naturalization ceremony, Wildes was asked if they had become citizens through "chain migration."

“I suppose," he replied, according to the New York Times. "It’s a dirty — a dirtier word. It stands for a bedrock of our immigration process when it comes to family reunification.”

The sentiment was far removed from President Trump's constant disdainful remarks about immigrants, whom he says want to "infest" the United States. The Trump administration wants to limit green-card sponsorship to spouses and minor children, dropping the age limit from 21 to 18. Making that change would reduce immigration to the U.S. by up to 50 percent.

'Truly Evil': Melania Trump Sponsored Parents Through Immigration Policy the President Has Fervently Condemned Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
Trump has fervently condemned the practice of immigrants sponsoring their family members.

Trump has routinely made clear that he wants to crack down on not only undocumented immigration but documented immigration as well. He has particular contempt for what he called "chain migration," a derogatory term for what is better known as family reunification: the practice of allowing immigrants to sponsor members of their family to live and work in the United States.

He has proposed plans to sharply limit the practice and has proclaimed on Twitter that it is "NOT ACCEPTABLE!"

But it is apparently perfectly acceptable for his wife.

Today, First Lady Melania Trump's parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, officially became naturalized U.S. citizens after having moved from their native Slovenia several years ago. According to the New York Times, their attorney Michael Wildes said he "suppose[d]" they entered the country as a result of "chain migration."

Wildes insists they have satisfied the requirements for naturalization and have not received any special treatment from their ties to the Trump family. Nonetheless, they have still come in through a process that Trump himself has claimed lets in "truly evil" people and must end "for the love of country."

Asked about the Knavses, the First Lady's communications director Stephanie Grisham said, "I'm not commenting on them."

The disconnect was not lost on many people, including Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA).

The truth is that family reunification is, as with Melania's parents, a perfectly benign affair. There are already stringent regulations on the practice that generally mean families have to wait years to reunify. Furthermore, allowing immigrants to sponsor their families is an essential feature of attracting high-skilled workers to our country in the first place — workers that Trump ostensibly claims he wants the immigration system to prioritize. Our country will not be attractive to workers if we force them to choose between working here and staying with their family.

The fact that Trump cannot understand the need for people to stay with their families, when that is the experience of his own wife, is remarkable.

Go语言版本的forgery Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

>>> import forgery_py >>> forgery_py.address.street_address() u'4358 Shopko Junction' >>> forgery_py.basic.hex_color() '3F0A59' >>> forgery_py.currency.description() u'Slovenia Tolars' >>> forgery_py.date.date() datetime.date(2012, 7, 27) >>> forgery_py.internet.email_address() u'brian@zazio.mil' >>> forgery_py.lorem_ipsum.title() u'Pretium nam rhoncus ultrices!' >>> forgery_py.name.full_name() u'Mary Peters' >>> forgery_py.personal.language() u'Hungarian'

$ cat name.py import random from ..dictionaries_loader import get_dictionary __all__ = [ 'first_name', 'last_name', 'full_name', 'male_first_name', 'female_first_name', 'company_name', 'job_title', 'job_title_suffix', 'title', 'suffix', 'location', 'industry' ] def first_name(): """Random male of female first name.""" _dict = get_dictionary('male_first_names') _dict += get_dictionary('female_first_names') return random.choice(_dict).strip()

first_name() 方法是forgery_py中一个典型伪造数据方法,我们只要来分析它就可以知道forgery_py的工作原理了。

这个方法代码很少,能容易就看出 _dict = get_dictionary('male_first_names') 和 _dict += get_dictionary('female_first_names') 获取的数据合并,在最后的 return random.choice(_dict).strip() 返回随机的数据。它的重点在于 get_dictionary() ,所以我们需要来看它的所在位置 dictionaries_loader.py 文件。

$ cat dictionaries_loader import random DICTIONARIES_PATH = abspath(join(dirname(__file__), 'dictionaries')) dictionaries_cache = {} def get_dictionary(dict_name): """ Load a dictionary file ``dict_name`` (if it's not cached) and return its contents as an array of strings. """ global dictionaries_cache if dict_name not in dictionaries_cache: try: dictionary_file = codecs.open( join(DICTIONARIES_PATH, dict_name), 'r', 'utf-8' ) except IOError: None else: dictionaries_cache[dict_name] = dictionary_file.readlines() dictionary_file.close() return dictionaries_cache[dict_name]

以上就是 dictionaries_loader.py 文件去掉注释后的所以要内容。

# forgery的基本目录 $ cat forgery ├── dictionaries # 数据源 │ ├── male_first_names ├── name.go # 具体功能实现 └── loader.go # 加载数据

// forgery/loader.go package forgery import ( "os" "io" "bufio" "math/rand" "time" "strings" ) // 全局的缓存map var dictionaries map[string][]string = make(map[string][]string) // 在获取数据之后随机输出 func random(slice []string) string { rand.Seed(time.Now().UnixNano()) n := rand.Intn(len(slice)) return strings.TrimSpace(slice[n]) } // 主要的数据加载方法 func loader(name string) (slice []string, err error) { slice, ok := dictionaries[name] // 缓存中存在数据,直接返回 if ok { return slice, nil } // 读取对应文件 file, err := os.Open("./dictionaries/" + name) if err != nil { return slice, err } defer file.Close() rd := bufio.NewReader(file) for { line, err := rd.ReadString('\n') slice = append(slice, line) if err != nil || io.EOF == err { break } } dictionaries[name] = slice return slice, nil } // 统一的错误处理 func checkErr(err error) (string, error) { return "", err }

// forgery/name.go // Random male of female first name. func FirstName() (string, error) { slice, err := loader("male_first_names") checkErr(err) slice1, err := loader("female_first_names") checkErr(err) slice = append(slice, slice1...) return random(slice), nil }

Longing for Adventure! Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
Have you ever been reading and one word,
yes just one word, hits you in your heart? Recently in a magazine the word "longing" just jumped out and grabbed me.
What does it mean: yearning, strong, persistent desire or craving, especially for something unattainable or distant: filled with longing for home. an instance of this: a sudden longing to see old friends.

For me longing means adventure!
I long for adventures.
I longed for adventure even as a child,
to travel to places yet unseen,
or climb the highest tree,
or take off on my bicycle and travel as far as I could go.
Right this moment my longing is to travel.
To tell you the truth it doesn't much matter where,
but just to go, see, savor, learn, and embrace whatever there is out there.
I have thought long and hard about travel.
Where would I want to go?
Well I do love France, yes I do!
But I love other places too.
Places yet unseen are beckoning me,
maybe Cuba, the east coast of the US, Belize, Alaska,
Greece, Turkey, India, China, Japan, Ireland, more of Spain,
Portugal, Slovenia, do you get it?
I want to see it all.
Don't get me wrong, I have loved all the travel I have done.
But still!
It is the longing in my heart, adventure!

What do you long for?

Third of babies are born outside wedlock, and rate still rising Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

One in every three babies is born outside marriage, the highest rate in Malta in over a decade, according to EU statistics. Eurostat reported that 31.8 per cent of all babies born in 2016 belonged to couples who were not married, up from 26.9 per cent in the previous year. Just over a decade earlier, in 2005, births to unmarried couples amounted to 20 per cent of all babies born. Figures continued to rise steadily since, the Eurostat figures showed. At EU level, the proportion of live births outside marriage stood at 43 per cent in 2016, just over 15 percentage points above that in 2000. “From 2000, the share steadily increased by around one percentage point each year, signalling changing patterns of family formation, with births occurring in non-marital relationships, cohabiting couples and to lone parents,” Eurostat noted. In eight member states there were more live births registered outside marriage than within marriage, with France posting the highest rate (60 per cent), followed by Bulgaria and Slovenia (both 59 per cent). The increase in babies born outside wedlock comes at a time when the number of marriages in Malta followed an upward trend, with data tabled in...

Melania Trump's parents become naturalised US citizens Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

New York, Aug 10 (IANS) US First Lady Melania Trumps parents became American citizens in a naturalisation ceremony here, completing a year-long immigration process even as President Donald Trump called for new laws to bar Americans from sponsoring parents and other relatives.

Michael Wildes, an attorney for Viktor and Amalija Knavs, who had been living in the country as legal permanent residents after leaving their native Slovenia, confirmed that his clients took the oath of citizenship at the ceremony on Thursday, reports The Washington Post.

"Citizenship was just awarded," Wildes said. "They have prevailed in a wonderful journey, as millions have."

Stephanie Grisham, a spokeswoman for the First Lady, declined to comment on the couple, saying that "they are not part of the administration".

Wildes said the Knavses satisfied the requirement that permanent residents hold their green cards for five years before they can apply for US citizenship.

However, it remains unclear when the Knavses first moved to the US, but by late 2007, Viktor Knavs was listed in public records as residing at Mar-a-Lago, the President's private club in Palm Beach, Fla.

The Knavses received no special treatment because of their relationship with the first family, Wildes told reporters in New York.

"The application, the process, the interview was no different than anybody else's, other than the security arrangements to (the) facility today," he said. "This is an example of it going right. They're very excited."

Questions about the couple's immigration status intensified last year as the President mounted a push to reduce legal immigration, including provisions to constrict the ability of US citizens to sponsor their parents, adult children and siblings for green cards, The Washington Post reported.

In fiscal 2016, the US granted nearly 1.2 million green cards, of which 174,000 went to parents of American citizens, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

President Trump has railed against what he calls "chain migration", which he says has resulted in fiercer competition for blue-collar jobs for native-born Americans and greater national security concerns.

Melania Trump, formerly a model known as Melania Knauss, arrived in New York in 1996 and began dating Donald Trump in 2000.

In 2001, she was granted a green card in the elite EB-1 programme, which was designed for renowned academic researchers, multinational business executives or those in other fields, such as Olympic athletes and Oscar-winning actors, who demonstrated "sustained national and international acclaim".

The year she got her legal residency, only five people from Slovenia received green cards under the EB-1 programme, according to the State Department.

The Knavses raised Melania in the rural town of Sevnica when Slovenia was a part of communist Yugoslavia.

Viktor Knavs, now 74, was a car dealer, while Amalija Knavs, now 73, worked in a textile factory.

Washington - Melania Trump's parents on Thursday received American citizenship under so-called "chain migration" rules her husband, President Donald Trump, has frequently derided.

The first lady's Slovenian-born parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, were sworn in in New York City, their lawyer Michael Wildes said, adding that the couple received no preferential treatment.
Asked by the New York Times if the couple had become citizens through "chain migration," Wildes answered "I suppose."
Wildes said the term was a "dirtier" way of describing "a bedrock of our immigration process when it comes to family reunification," the Times reported.
President Trump has frequently slammed the process under which legal US residents can sponsor the admission of family members and other people who are not close relatives.
In November, Trump tweeted that the process "must end now!"
"Some people come in, and they bring their whole family with them, who can be truly evil. NOT ACCEPTABLE!" he wrote.
Melania Trump was born Melania Knavs in what was then the communist country of Yugoslavia and later changed her surname to Knauss.

First lady Melania Trump's Slovenian-born parents were sworn-in as U.S. citizens Thursday, benefiting from a path to citizenship known as family-based immigration that the president and others have derisively dubbed "chain migration." The lawyer acknowledged that the Knavses had obtained citizenship via the very pathway that their son-in-law, the president, has so publicly denounced. Wildes called chain migration a "dirtier" way of characterizing "a bedrock of our immigration process when it comes to family reunification," according to The New York Times. Nueva York, Estados Unidos.

The US got two new citizens on Thursday. The parents of first lady Melania Trump - Viktor and Amalija Knavs were sworn in, in a ceremony in New York. Their naturalization comes as the Trump administration faces mounting criticism about its zero tolerance immigration policy that resulted in thousands of children getting separated from their parents. Melania Trump moved to the US in 1996 from Slovenia to pursue a career as a model and became a citizen in 2006. Her parents had been living in the US as permanent residents with green cards.

Journalists doubt that Šarec, a former comedian, will be able to successfully manage the centre-left government.

Bled Eslovenia Pueblo Bonito

Bled.

New York: President Donald Trump's Slovenian in-laws became United States citizens through "chain migration", a programme he has repeatedly denounced, in which adult American citizens can obtain citizenship for their relatives.

First Lady Melania Trump's parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, became US citizens at a private ceremony here. She had sponsored her parents for their green cards, their lawyer Michael Wildes said in a report in The New York Times.

"Once they had the green card, they then applied for citizenship when they were eligible," he said.

When asked if the Knavses had obtained citizenship through "chain migration", Wildes, said, "I suppose."

"It's a dirty, a dirtier word," he said, but added that "it stands for a bedrock of our immigration process when it comes to family reunification."

Trump has vehemently opposed the "chain migration" system, more commonly known as family-based immigration, that lets adult American citizens obtain citizenship for their relatives.

In November, he had tweeted, "CHAIN MIGRATION must end now! Some people come in, and they bring their whole family with them, who can be truly evil. NOT ACCEPTABLE!”

Trump also often speaks out against the family-based immigration system at his rallies, saying it a pathway for terrorists to enter the country, the NYT report added.

According to the report, the first lady's communications director Stephanie Grisham said since the Knavses are not part of the administration, she is not commenting on them.

Standing alongside the Knavses, their lawyer said the couple has "travailed a wonderful journey, like most have, millions have in getting citizenship and waiting the requisite period of time."

He said their application, the process, the interview was no different than anybody's else's.

"…These doors that are in America remain hinged open to beautiful people as they have today. They would appreciate their privacy and we just thank everybody for their attention to this very important dialogue that we are having on immigration. This is an example of it going right," he said.

Viktor, 74, is two years older than President Trump. Amalija is 73.

The first lady, born Melanija, changed her name to Melania Knauss when she started modelling.

According to news reports, Melania came to the US in 2001 on a so-called Einstein visa for "individuals of extraordinary ability" as a model.

She became a United States citizen in 2006.

The Knavses came and went from the ceremony at a Manhattan federal building flanked by Homeland Security police.

Melania Trump was not present for the ceremony.

She was in Bedminster, New Jersey, at the Trump National Golf Club, where Trump is currently staying.

The Knavses frequently travel with the Trumps and split their time between New York, Palm Beach and Washington, where they stay in the White House, the NYT report added.

It said it is unclear about when or how the couple received green cards.

Under immigration statutes, the Knavses would have needed to have their green cards for at least five years in order to apply for citizenship, along with fulfilling character, residency and civic knowledge requirements.

According to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, it takes about 1-2 years to process an application for naturalization in New York City.

The report quoted their lawyer as saying that the couple had met the five-year requirement, but added, "I can't give further comment."

Usually naturalization ceremonies at the Jacob J. Javits Federal Building in the city are large events in which several immigrants are sworn in as citizens after reciting an oath and the Pledge of Allegiance. But the Knavses' lawyer said their ceremony was kept private for "security reasons".

Presiding over the ceremony was New York district director of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services Thomas Cioppa.

The Knavses raised Melania in the rural industrial town of Sevnica while Slovenia was under Communist rule.

Viktor was a car dealer while Amalija worked in a textile factory.

The lawyer acknowledged that the Knavses had obtained citizenship via the very pathway that their son-in-law, the president, has so publicly denounced. Melania Trump used visa opposed by her husband to get her parents' citizenship. Trump hypocrit, liar, rascist. USA soul searching. Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
CNN)President Donald Trump's in-laws are officially United States citizens, obtaining their citizenship through the sponsorship of their adult daughter, one of the very categories of family visas that the administration has sought to end. Viktor and Amalija Knavs, the parents of first lady Melania Trump, were granted citizenship Thursday, their immigration attorney, Michael Wildes, announced. "It went well and they are very grateful and appreciative of this wonderful day for their family," he said in a statement to CNN. The first lady's office declined to comment. Viktor and Amalija Knavs, who are from Slovenia, had been living in the United States with green cards and have been frequently spotted in Washington since their son-in-law assumed the presidency. A source with direct knowledge of Melania Trump's parents and their immigration status told CNN that Melania Trump sponsored her parents for their green cards, a status that allowed them to live and work in the US indefinitely and paved the way for citizenship. That type of family visa is exactly one of the categories that Trump and his allies have tried to repeal, saying they are harmful to the US. Wildes wouldn't comment on how the Knavs received their green cards or citizenship Thursday, but criticized the Trump administration's immigration policies to CNN. "I believe strongly in the principles of family reunification, which is a bedrock of immigration policy and law and has brought millions of people happily to our shores," Wildes said. Pressed on the fact that the President has harshly criticized family-based migration and regularly refers to it as "chain migration," Wildes responded: "I can't comment on the President's politics when it comes to my clients but I have stood up against the President's immigration policies personally." There are only a handful of ways that immigrants to the US can obtain green cards, and the largest share of them each year are given out based on familial connections. A smaller number go to immigrants based on their employment, and other categories include refugees and other special cases. Advocates for restricting legal immigration have pointed to the imbalance in favor of family connections as evidence of the need for reform, calling for a "merit-based" system that would choose immigrants based on need in the US. The US allows a number of ways for US citizens and legal permanent residents to sponsor family members to come to the US permanently, including categories for parents, adult siblings and adult children, married and unmarried. Trump and his congressional allies have fought to slash that dramatically, limiting sponsorship to spouses and minor children, including dropping the threshold for minor children from 21 to 18. Experts estimate that could cut overall immigration to the US by 40% to 50%, if those green cards are not reallocated to another category. Trump has advocated a "merit-based" system, but has not proposed any method of admitting immigrants to the US to replace those categories. Viktor and Amalija Knavs, 73 and 71 years old, respectively, are retired, and they maintain regular contact with the Trump family, often traveling with the first family on trips to Mar-a-Lago and Bedminster, New Jersey.

Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday outlined the Trump administration's plan to create a "Space Force" as a sixth branch of the military as soon as 2020. It would be the first new branch of the military since the Air Force was created after World War II. President Trump in June ordered the Pentagon to establish the force to ensure U.S. dominance in space, calling it "so important" and explaining that it would take over space-related duties from the Air Force. Pence said the Space Force will help the U.S. "meet the emerging threats on this new battlefield" with dedicated space technology experts and defense systems. The White House reportedly wants to get the new department off the ground by 2020, but is expected to face opposition from Congress. [The Washington Post]

Kansas' too-close-to-call Republican primary for governor got even tighter on Thursday, with Secretary of State Kris Kobach's 191-vote lead over incumbent Gov. Jeff Colyer shrinking to 121 out of 311,000 ballots cast. The tally was adjusted as two counties reported that their counts differed from what Kobach's office put on its website. Colyer said some clerks had received incorrect information on what ballots to count, and he bitterly called on Kobach to recuse himself. Kobach said he would step aside from overseeing the count. Kobach, an immigration and voter I.D. hardliner who got a late endorsement from President Trump, told CNN his role in the process was largely symbolic, but that he would be "happy" to recuse himself if that's what his opponent wanted. A federal judge on Thursday threatened to hold Attorney General Jeff Sessions in contempt of court after the Justice Department tried to deport a mother and daughter in the middle of their appeal. "This is pretty outrageous," U.S. District Court Judge Emmet Sullivan said after learning of the removal. "That someone seeking justice in U.S. court is spirited away while her attorneys are arguing for justice for her?" Sullivan halted the deportation and ordered the Justice Department to "turn the plane around." An administration official told CBS News that the woman and her daughter never got off the plane in El Salvador before it returned to Texas. The woman is a plaintiff in a lawsuit the American Civil Liberties Union filed this week challenging Sessions' decision to refuse asylum based on claims by people seeking refuge from domestic and gang violence. U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III, who has repeatedly berated prosecutors in Paul Manafort's trial, on Thursday backed down from one such incident after one of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's deputies filed a motion complaining that Ellis had unfairly scolded them, potentially giving the jury the false impression that prosecutors had acted improperly. "This prejudice should be cured," prosecutor Andrew Weissman wrote. Ellis had criticized prosecutors for letting a witness, IRS agent Michael Welsh, sit in the courtroom before testifying, although Mueller's team said Ellis had granted permission earlier for the witness to be there. Ellis said he was "probably wrong" and instructed the jury to disregard his remarks. [The Washington Post, Fox News]

The Army has halted discharges of immigrant recruits who enlisted with the understanding they would get a path to citizenship, The Associated Press reported Thursday, citing a memo. "Effective immediately, you will suspend processing of all involuntary separation actions," said the July 20 memo, signed by Acting Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs Marshall Williams. The disclosure came one month after the AP reported that dozens of men and women who enlisted under the special immigrant program were being discharged or facing canceled contracts. The Army also reversed the discharge of one reservist, Lucas Calixto of Brazil, after he sued. [The Associated Press]

Southern California prosecutors on Thursday charged a suspect, 51-year-old Forrest Gordon Clark, with arson and other offenses for allegedly starting the Holy Fire, which has burned more than 10,000 acres in Orange and Riverside counties. The blaze has damaged or destroyed at least 14 structures and forced 20,000 people to evacuate. It was just 5 percent contained as of Thursday. Clark, who was arrested Tuesday, reportedly sent an email last week saying, "This place will burn." He faces several felony charges that could result in a maximum sentence of life in prison. His bail was set at $1 million. The Holy Fire is one of 18 wildfires raging in the state, including the Mendocino Complex fire, the largest in the state's history. That blaze has burned more than 300,000 acres in Northern California. [USA Today]

Tennessee on Thursday carried out the execution of Billy Ray Irick for the 1985 rape and murder of a 7-year-old girl. It was the first time the state had carried out the death penalty since December 2009. The Supreme Court denied Irick's request for a stay hours before the execution. Justice Sonia Sotomayor issued a forceful dissent, saying that the state's drug protocol for lethal injection, which includes the controversial sedative midazolam, results in "torturous pain." Irick was convicted in 1986 for the rape and murder of a Knoxville girl he was babysitting, 7-year-old Paula Dyer. Asked if he had any last words before the lethal injection, Irick said: "I just want to say I'm really sorry and that, that's it." [CBS News]

First lady Melania Trump's parents, both Slovenian immigrants, were sworn in as U.S. citizens in New York on Thursday. They had been in the country as legal permanent residents with green cards. They were eligible for residency and to apply for citizenship because their daughter, also an immigrant, had citizenship. Many immigrants get green cards and eventually citizenship through links to relatives who are citizens, but President Trump has vowed to roll back such family-based immigration, which he calls "chain migration." Tesla shares dropped by 4.8 percent on Thursday, giving back the gains from a rally sparked two days earlier when CEO Elon Musk announced that he was considering taking the electric-car maker private. The stock fell to $352.45, far below the $420 mark at which Musk said shareholders would be bought out, as investors questioned whether Musk could pull it off. Musk sent the stock soaring 11 percent higher on Tuesday after claiming he had "funding secured" at a price that would value the company at $82 billion. Since then, he has not provided any evidence he had it lined up. People with knowledge of 15 financial institutions and technology firms said they knew of no financing lined up to execute Musk's proposal. Tesla's board is seeking more information on Musk's plan. A Chilean prosecutor said Thursday that officials had raided the office of the bishop to the armed services as part of a broader investigation into possible cover-ups by Roman Catholic Church officials of sexual abuse claims against priests in Chile. Provincial prosecutor Emiliano Arias said the search of Santiago Silva's office was done under a court order with authorization by the defense minister and commander in chief of the armed forces. Silva also is president of the Chilean bishops' conference. Investigators, accompanied by military officials, seized documents linked to 20 years of sexual abuse complaints sent to Silva and his predecessor, former bishop Juan Barros. Seven other offices of high-ranking church figures also have been searched for evidence. [Reuters]

First lady Melania Trump's parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, became U.S. citizens on Thursday, taking advantage of a program that President Trump has long railed against.

Their ceremony was private for "security reasons," attorney Michael Wildes said. Trump has decried "chain migration," where adult U.S. citizens can obtain residency for their relatives. On Nov. 1, 2017, for example, he tweeted: "CHAIN MIGRATION must end now! Some people come in, and they bring their whole family with them, who can be truly evil. NOT ACCEPTABLE!" Wildes told The New York Times "I suppose" the Knavses obtained citizenship through chain migration, but called the term a "dirtier" way of describing family-based immigration, "a bedrock of our immigration process when it comes to family reunification."

The Knavses are from Slovenia, but they now divide their time between New York City, Palm Beach, and Washington, D.C., where they stay with the Trumps in the White House. Wildes said the first lady sponsored her parents for their green cards, and once eligible, they applied for citizenship. To apply for U.S. citizenship, a person must have a green card for at least five years, plus meet the character, residency, and civic knowledge requirements. It's unclear when the Knavses obtained permanent residency in the U.S., the Times reports, but Wildes said they met the five-year requirement.

Melania Trump became a citizen in 2006, five years after she gained permanent residency by obtaining a so-called "Einstein visa," for "individuals of extraordinary ability." She began dating Donald Trump in 1998.

The Gers earned an emphatic 3-1 win over NK Maribor in the first leg of the Europa League clash, and Gerrard has plenty of reasons to feel happy. Goals from Alfredo Morelos, James Tavernier and Lassana Coulibaly sealed the tie in Rangers’s favour, putting them in a strong position ahead of the second leg in Slovenia. The Gers boss was particularly impressed with the performance of his club skipper, Tavernier, and hailed his display as “magnificent”. The 27-year-old

The Slovenian-born parents of US First Lady Melania Trump became US citizens at a naturalisation ceremony in New York on Thursday, their immigration lawyer Michael Wildes confirmed to AFP. President Donald Trump's in-laws, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, took the oath of citizenship, Wildes said. He did not specify how long it had taken the Knavs to complete the citizenship process, nor whether the 48-year-old First Lady had sponsored their permanent residency. Trump has taken a hardline on immigration policy, criticizing so-called chain migration that allows naturalised US citizens to sponsor close relatives for permanent residency.

Meet the parents: who are Trump's in-laws, Viktor and Amalija Knavs? He has a larger-than-life personality not unlike his son-in-law's. She was a striking beauty with an eye for fashion, much like her daughter. Meet Viktor and Amalija Knavs – parents of Melania Trump, America's first foreign-born First Lady – who became freshly-minted US citizens on Thursday. Having previously lived on green cards sponsored by Melania, who moved to the United States from Slovenia to work as a model in 1996, the Knavs swore an oath of citizenship in a naturalisation ceremony in New York – taking advantage of a form of 'chain migration' that President Donald Trump has previously tried to appeal. So, what else do we know about his in-laws? Viktor Knavs, right, and his wife Amalija, left, arrive at their naturalisation ceremony in New York on Thursday Credit: Seth Wenig/AP Viktor Knavs A member of the Communist Party as a young man, 74 year-old Viktor lived in the rural town of Sevnica in Slovenia, then part of Yugoslavia, which was best known for its medieval castle and annual salami festival – at least until his son-in-law's unexpected ascent to the White House. In the former Yugoslavia, membership of the Communist Party was a highly-coveted privilege reserved for an elite few – it's not known how Viktor won his place, although some have speculated that his job as a chauffeur for a mayor of a neighbouring town may have played a part. According to the New York Times, Mr Knav was described by former neighbours as a “larger than life” character, who carried himself in much the same way as his future son-in-law, Donald Trump, and had a fondness for Mercedes and Masaratis. He met Amalija in 1966 and the pair had a daughter, Ines, before Melania was born in 1970. The family moved to a government-owned housing block for workers of a nearby textile factory and later bought an apartment in the capital city of Ljubljana. The building’s superintendent, Joze Vuk recalled that Viktor “always wore a tie, smart clothes and carried a briefcase. You could not avoid noticing him.” Donald Trump described his father-in-law as “pretty successful” in a 2016 interview. “It’s a different kind of success than you have here. But he was successful.” Viktor has now put his humble Slovenian beginnings behind him, and spends much of his time in Trump Tower in Manhattan and Mar-a-Lago, his son-in-law's glamorous beach resort in Palm Beach, Florida. The fragments of her biography revealed by the family indicate shespent her years in Svenica pursuing a love of fashion and beauty. Gifted with striking looks, Amalija started out harvesting red onions on her parents’ farm, according to the New York Times. While her husband drove around the country selling cars, Amalija later took a job in a Svenica textile factory, and is remembered for walking over the bridge to work each day in heels. Melania's older sister, Ines, shared a picture of their parents in 1967 on Facebook Credit: Ines Knauss, Facebook She frequently spent her free time after work sewing dresses for her two daughters, bequeathing to Melania an appreciation for fashion which would ultimately take her to the New York Fashion Week party at Manhattan's Kit Kat Club in 1998, where she met Donald Trump. Along with Viktor, she now spends much of her time in the US with their daughter and 12 year-old grandson. Barron is apparently close to grandparents, with whom he reportedly speaks Slovenian, and Politico described them as "hyperinvolved" in his life. Melania's success has also allowed her parents to buy a handsome mansion in their home town of Sevnica – complete with security guards to ward off unwanted visitors.

Melania Trump's Parents Get US Citizenship Under Program Slammed By Trump Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
The Slovenian-born parents of Melania Trump became US citizens at a naturalization ceremony in New York on Thursday, reportedly taking advantage of a family reunification program President Donald Trump has vehemently denounced.

Trump's in-laws Viktor and Amalija Knavs took the oath of citizenship, their immigration lawyer Michael Wildes confirmed to AFP.

Asked by the New York Times if they had obtained citizenship under a program derisively branded "chain migration" by the president, Wildes replied: "I suppose."

He said chain migration, which allows naturalized US citizens to sponsor close relatives for permanent residency, was a "dirtier" way of characterizing what he called "a bedrock of our immigration process when it comes to family reunification."

Trump has taken a hardline on immigration policy, criticizing so-called chain migration.

The Republican president has said such a system steals jobs from Americans and threatens national security, calling for a merit-based system that gives preference to more educated, English-speaking professionals.

Writing on Twitter in November, Trump made his views on the system clear.

"CHAIN MIGRATION must end now! Some people come in, and they bring their whole family with them, who can be truly evil. NOT ACCEPTABLE!"

Marines try creative ad campaign, Trump hypocrisy, save the orcas with a fish cannon by Nathalie Graham

Probably exactly what was going down at The Foundation Nightclub.
Probably exactly what was going down at Foundation Nightclub. sturti / Getty Images

Seattle nightclub was internally dealing date-rape drugs: Foundation Nightclub, a spot in Belltown, had a bad reputation for drugs and sexual assault. Police started an investigation in March. During their investigation, a drug dealer unknowingly instructed undercover cops on how to drug women’s drinks and bragged about a close relationship to the club’s owner, reported KIRO 7. According to the Seattle police report, police “seized 829 grams of cocaine, over 1,000 grams of MDMA, 400 ecstasy pills, 800 Xanax pills, 190 grams of ketamine, 13 grams of DMT, 176 grams of GHB, 1200 Molly capsules, and additional prescription drugs, as well as two handguns and more than $60,000 in cash.” Foundation Nightclub is currently closed.

Three Seahawks players not present for the national anthem: The NFL announced a new national anthem policy over the summer; players cannot kneel during the national anthem, they have to stand and “respect the flag.” However, if they don’t want to, they can stay in the locker room or the tunnel. Three Seahawks players hung back in the tunnel during the anthem. They were Quinton Jefferson, Branden Jackson, and Duane Brown.

Suburban Seattleites really don’t want a bike lane: There’s been huge backlash ever since it was announced that 35th Avenue in North Seattle was going to be repaved and a bike lane was going to be added. Residents and business owners alike are pissed about it because it will take away their street parking. So pissed that someone planted fireworks in the construction equipment being used for the project. Workers found a firework stuck in their backhoe with the fuse sticking out. Four fireworks were found and one had been lit, reports the Seattle Times. Insane!

Get up to date on election results: Things are so close between the Dems in the 8th District! Sarah Smith is still kicking! More!

Revive I-5 rears its ugly head: Strap in and buckle down, the resurfacing project continues this weekend with closures between the Swift Avenue and Albro Place off-ramp and Highway 520. Northbound I-5 will be reduced to two lanes starting Friday at 8 p.m. It will reopen entirely at 5 a.m. on Monday. Notice how I didn’t tack on a “the” before I-5 this time? You’re welcome. I know how hard that mistake was for you guys last time. Oh, also this is the second to last weekend of this project.

Save the orcas by blasting them with a salmon cannon: Whooshh Innovations — yes, that’s their real name — specializes in moving fish upstream. They want to save the orcas with their tech which can move salmon up and over dams lickity split. It’s faster than traditional fish ladders, the low steps put in place so fish can gradually jump around and over barriers, reports KING 5. The fish cannon moves fish (gently) over a dam in one minute. I know, I know, you’re wondering just how many fish we’re talking here. Whooshh says they can transport 20 to 60 fish in a minute. That simultaneously seems like a big difference in fish and like it wouldn’t be such a gentle process. Especially because Whooshh’s CEO bragged the tech could get a fish over any dam in the United States. Let’s get the Mythbusters team on this stat.

We already knew this but: The University of Washington was named among the most beautiful campuses in the United States. It was named the third most beautiful campus. Before you go off and tell your parents that your student debt is now extra worth it, this report was done by the Matador Network. What is that? Yeah, I have no idea, either. It’s apparently a travel network. Do with that what you will.

Here we gooooo: I made the mistake of wearing pants yesterday. If I wear pants today, will it still be a mistake? Discuss in the comments.

This is kind of cool: Mostly because I’m competitive and love a challenge. Don’t worry about listening to the audio for this, but try to see if you can read it. Basically, the BBC is testing out a new way of reading the news via smartphone or smartwatch.

King Felix, dethroned: We all know I don’t know anything about baseball. But I know who Felix Hernandez is. And, I can read. What I read about Felix Hernandez this morning is that he’s now in the bullpen. Using context clues and basic instinct, I’ve determined that Hernandez is out of pitching rotation because he’s been performing poorly. My sources—aka the four Mariners games I’ve been to in my life—tell me that Hernandez used to be a big deal. So this is probably a blow to his ego and his fans.

Kanye reflects for a second:

Obviously, it’s short-lived:

More Trump hypocrisy: Yesterday, Melania Trump’s Slovenian parents became naturalized US citizens by way of “chain migration.” That’s where adult American citizens can get residency for their relatives, according to the New York Times. Naturally, even while his wife’s parents were going through the process, Donald Trump was bashing it. Maybe… just maybe… it’s not immigration Trump hates, but nonwhite people.

Newly released cables detail torture techniques used by the CIA: They were overseen by Gina Haspel, the new CIA director. The cables describe graphic depictions of waterboarding. However, it’s called “water treatment” in the documents, as if the brutal and inhumane torture technique was some new-age skin-care routine at a Four Seasons Spa. They also used other techniques like shaving a prisoner (???), locking him in a box, and slamming him against a wall, the New York Times reports. No valuable information was gained from these methods, contrary to Haspel’s defense during her confirmation process.

Thousands of people want to replace Betsy DeVos: They want her out as education secretary. They want LeBron James, who recently opened a school in Ohio, to take her spot. More than 13,000 people have signed a petition calling for the change. James will likely stick with his current career path—playing for the Los Angeles Lakers.

This is the best ad campaign I’ve ever seen: As anyone who’s anyone knows, the new Super Smash Bros game is coming out soon. All of the characters were revealed this week for Super Smash Bros Ultimate. The US Marines Corps, never one to miss a trending topic, jumped into action. Join the Marines, it’s just like Smash. If you can make it through this whole video, then you are stronger than me. Maybe you're cut out to be a marine.

A fun fact for your Friday: Schizophrenic voices are shaped by culture. For instance, Americans often experience violent or hateful hallucinations, whereas in India and Africa the hallucinations are more playful and positive.

This weekend's best Seattle entertainment options include: SPF30: Sub Pop’s 30th Anniversary Party, Pearl Jam's Home Shows, the opening of Spike Lee's new film BlacKkKlansman, and the crack pie-filled Milk Bar Ice Cream Social & Bake Sale.

Pentru Pack&Pitch Projects a fost selectat proiectul The Day the Child in me Died â€' producător Ana-Maria Voicu. Docu Rough Cut Boutique prezintă printre cele 5 producţii finaliste, proiectul The Chalice (regia Cătălina Tesar, producător Anda Ionescu).
