BETTER CALL SOLBAKKEN!      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

The Solbakken Fuzzfestival is a bi-yearly event that takes place out on the South East coast of Norway. Set in an enclave of Arendal called Moltemyr, it’s a garden party set in a very well-appointed garden between two houses. An invite to this was an offer that I was not about to refuse and getting to that part of the world isn’t exactly a cakewalk but like the song conveys, have love, will travel.

It took a smidge over 12 hours door to door. Exactly a week ago from right about now I took a bus ride through picture postcard beautiful vistas that look like a cross between 'wir ain' highlands and the Pacific Northwest. The shimmer of the sun on the lakes as it went down just added to the twilight zone-ness. All you really need to know is that it is spectacular.

The crowd gather...
Having dropped by Risør a couple of years ago, Arendal further reminded me of the similarity between that region and the East Neuk of Fife. They don’t have a chip shop like they do in Anstruther but maybe I could go out there and open one?

Within a half hour of being there I was out on the town with Fuzzmistress Hilde. After some Indian food we hit up the hostelry she works in called Barrique. A very nice old wood varnished bar with at least one member of staff that will point blank refuse to serve you a mojito. I never take for granted the opportunity to take such jaunts and this was the only evening it would be possible to make that particular scene. And for Hilde to take time out of her busy schedule like this was above and beyond because she is the epicentre.

Revesound revving up
As straight talking a wee bisom that ever walked, this one can get stuff done. All the others that are involved with this are equally driven, It’s an abject case for labours of love always trouncing something that is entered for gain. Their gain was to see everyone have a great time as a result of their selfless planning. Getting a wee preview of the site the day before was a trip and just hanging out sampling Magne’s epic brews and the Solbakken hospitality really hit the spot.

The freak weather has been causing ructions out there too and there’s a BBQ ban in Norway right now. That wasn’t to deter them though and a number of broilers were installed to take up the slack. These folks had thought of everything and maybe even a little more.

Snok - Forward into 1971!
Saturday rolled around quick and it was time for the garden party. As the revellers arrived it was clear that a great community not just from the immediate locale had grown around the event. With a family element that never reduced it to the level of the fete. I met and talked to a ton of people that I wish I could remember their names. It's an age thing that's getting worse by the day.

It all kicked off with a kind of folky review by Revesound. I’d just watched A Mighty Wind a few days beforehand and the similarity wasn’t lost on me. It became apparent even then that the space had become a natural amphitheatre and in the main, the sound was excellent for an outdoor concert experience. At some points during the evening, a mighty wind would indeed attempt to blow the cover off the stage on several occasions. It was expertly tethered though.

A period of broiling and hanging out followed that before the remainder of the music was rolled out. Snok set a pretty high bar for a bunch of actual real life teenagers. Led by Hilde’s son Lars they managed to conjure up shades of Sabbath in 1971 when even their parents weren’t around. Decidedly not-lumpy doom rock, they just made their first recordings that I’m very much looking forward to hearing. Their set was all the more amazing because they had to get a substitute drummer that knew the ropes at stupidly short notice. That guy did good.

Gimme an H, Gimme a C, Gimme a G,
Gimme an L, Gimme an I!

What's that spell? REINE LAKEN!
As I mentioned in Vulcher zine lately, little in my existence gives me greater pleasure than watching and being around Reine Laken. This time out they’d enlisted a new member and it was Camilla’s public debut. It went great and by the time they got to their version of Bikini Kill’s "Rebel Girl", the gathering went under the thunder. "Blitzkrieg Bop" into "Dancing With Joey Ramone" was a very nice touch. All the anxiety that goes into these performances is very much appreciated by their fans. I was thinking about how all the Madrid folks would have loved this.

Wirkola workin' it!

Wirkola Hellraisers are a solid combo that underlines the hard rock seam that ran through the day’s line up. I'm really digging the fact that Nazareth were (are?) so big out there and the ‘raisers deliver a tasty “Kentucky Fried Blues”. I think that Dan McCafferty would approve. At the other end of the spectrum, their take on the Sweet ignites around a three guitar attack, one of whom is Erland Ottem who was in Clawfinger. Their "Ballad of The Lower East Side" wasn’t slouching none either.

DeMidlertidige
DeMidlertidige (sp?) played at the grungier end of the spectrum and during their set I was blethering. Someone told me that they were playing an Alice In Chains song at one point and I have to say that they rendered it listenable. Something I can’t say has ever happened with that actual band. This Stine girl can sing. I even heard a little Nico in there and of course Grace Slick on a faithful run through "White Rabbit".

Rangers raised the stakes for Dunfermline’s finest by including "Close Enough for Rock’n’Roll" and they also fired out trusty takes on "Cold Gin", "Godzilla" and "The American Ruse" during their set indicating a certain level of taste for those of us that recognise the fine line that runs through the vein of heavier music.

Camilla and Ingri rippin it up to the strains of Rangers!

The band's were all done and dusted by curfew time but the party went on a good deal longer. heading back there in the daytime, the festival elves had been out and cleaned up. It was all looking as though almost nothing had happened. Service above and beyond self all the way.

Anyhoo... Solbakken FuzzFestival is something the world could do with a little more of right about now. The best small but perfectly formed festival action I’ve had since the legendary House of Rock that went down in Moss in that fateful June of 2011. People talk about game changers but that was a life changer.

My sincere thanks to all those folks that made this happen and for them having me there. There might not have been any morild this time but there was some magic here and there so that’ll suffice for now but I’ll need another RL fix before too long so I hope they have something in the works.

The adventure came to a close with a few hours in Moss Rock City and pretty much before I knew it, I was back on the bus heading for where it seemed like I had just started out. To add to that injury, I tried to use some currency at the duty free shop that had expired. I’m not sure why the Scandinavians change their notes so often but it’s a pain in the arse. Just as well that everything I had left wasn’t hooky and the liquorice score could be made.

SIMBA IMEVUNA MKWANJA MREFU      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Said Maulid ‘SMG’

Latest Releases from Vocalist Sofia Jernberg      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
By Eyal Hareuveni

Swedish, Ethiopian-born, Oslo-based vocal artist Sofia Jernberg needs no introduction. She calls herself a “maker of things” and she keeps doing a lot of beautiful things with Mats Gustafsson’s Fire! Orchestra, and countless free-improvisations meetings. She also did many interesting things with the Swedish-American Seval, with cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, and the Swedish-Norwegian-French quartet The New Songs. Jernberg continues to make exciting things with Gustafsson’s new group The End, and with the Norwegian experimental Lana Trio.

The End - Svårmod Och Vemod Är Värdesinnen (Rare Noise, 2018) *****

Take two of the wildest baritone sax heavyweights on our planet - Swedish Mats Gustafsson and Norwegian Kjetil Møster (whose resume spans from modern jazz groups as The Core and Trinity, through punk-jazz Ultralyd and Møster! to glam-rockers King Midas and Datarock); add the adventurous, avant-rocker, Deerhoof’s powerhouse drummer Greg Saunier (who enjoys improvising with guitarist Mary Halvorson and trumpeter Stephanie Richards) and throw into the mix Norwegian avant-noise-metal guitarist Anders Hana (from local groups MoHa!, Ultralyd and, Noxagt), who returned to musical activity after a seven-year sabbatical, and you already have enough ingredients for a super-exciting group, one that can reach apocalyptic climaxes in an instant. Still, the secret ingredient of this new group is Jernberg. Her strong presence seals the masculine maelstroms of fiery jazz, art rock, noise and poetic texts with a much needed feminine quality and emotional authority.

This potent dream team recorded its debut album, Svårmod Och Vemod Är Värdesinnen (in Swedish: dark melancholy and sadness are senses to be valued. This gory, suggestive titled is emphasized with the cover art by Edward Jarvis) in January 2018 in Bergen, Norway, after only three performances. Needless to say, the joint forces of Gustafsson and Møster with the baritone guitar of Hana and the propulsive drumming of Saunier promise raw, low-end onslaughts and boundless energy. Jernberg’s delivery - at times capricious, freewheeling wailing and on other times her one-of-a-kind singing-whispering-reciting charge the explosive mix with an urgent, even rebellious message of The End.

The album opens with two short pieces by Gustafsson and Hana. “Svårmod” offers everything you can expect from such group. Hana’s distorted-dirty, chainsaw guitar is in the center, embraced by the intense, baritone attacks of Gustafsson and Møster and the manic drumming of Saunier, while Jernberg screaming over this primordial lava. “Vemod” revolves around Hana’s hypnotic riff, that sound like a twisting West-African rhythmic rhythmic pattern with something catchy from the Captain Beefheart songbook, but already brings Jernberg wordless wailing to the center.

The End’s epic 14-minute “Translated Slaughter” is a completely different story. Jernberg acts, sighs, whispers and chants Gustafsson’s tortured-claustrophobic, stream-of-consciousness lyrics while Gustafsson and Møster are busy adding noisy, disturbing electronics. Hana deepens the dark atmosphere with assorted effects and Saunier keeps shaking this swampy ground with sudden attacks. Eventually, this pieces closes with a cathartic crescendo. Gustafsson’s “Don’t Wait” has a clearer - obvious - message (“...curiosity is the key, sharing is the key, don’t believe fuckin’ nothin’...”), and a familiar rhythmic structure, bringing to mind The Thing collaboration with vocalist Neneh Cherry (The Cherry Thing, Smalltown Supersound, 2012). The Jernberg thing offers her reciting-chanting the intuitive lyrics as half beat poet-half charismatic shaman, flirting majestically with the addictive, polyrhythmic pulse.

Møster’s brief interlude “Rich and Poor” serves as an introduction to his song “Both Sides Out”, a kind of requiem to post-Trump America that can be experienced psychoanalytic attempt to release the many demons from this tyrant’s deranged psyche. Jernberg continues to perform her shamanic duties, this time as an equal partner of The End’s brutal and terrifying cleansing ritual.

Only 44 minutes long but, no doubt, the best ones that you will spend in 2018.

More on Soundcloud.

Lana Trio with Sofia Jernberg (Clean Feed, 2018) ****

The experimental Norwegian Lana Trio - trombonist Henrik Munkeby Nørstebø, pianist Kjetil Jerve, and drummer Andreas Wildhagen, was formed in 2007. The trio managed to solidify in its first two albums a delicate balance between its intense, powerful interplay, an uncompromising search for new sounds and dynamics and a strong affinity for open-ended, non-idiomatic improvisations. Jernberg joined the trio for its third album, recorded on March 2016 in Halden, Norway, and performs now again with the trio after the release of the album.

Jernberg sounds as if she has been free-improvising with Lana Trio for ages. She fits organically in the wild yet loose chaos that Lana Trio keeps producing. But her operatic-eccentric delivery charges the focused interplay of the trio with an engaging, emotional depth/ Jernberg vocalizes wordless, seductive suggestions and uses her voice as an intriguing, subversive instrument.

Jernberg connection with Munkeby Nørstebø - who works with another experimental vocal artist, Audrey Chen, in the Beam Splitter - is almost telepathic. Both sound as have perfected their own imaginative, cryptic language. Wildhagen embraces these secretive talks with sudden, rhythmic eruptions while Jerve frames all with minimalist, percussive piano playing.

Each of the four free-improvised pieces focuses on a distinct strategy. The first one, “Ears Anciens”, is restless and urgent; the second, “Omnivore's Aperitif”, is enigmatic, sparse and surprisingly quiet; the third, “Ghost Training”, explodes with fiery flow of volcanic energy ; the fourth, “Solitude Chant”, concludes this wild ride with a mysterious, tempting ritual.

Jewish Extra-Territorial Citizenship      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Oliver Locker-Lampson had an idea and on April 12, 1938 he raised it in the House of Parliament of which he was a member, saying:

my idea is this: Although I hold to the creation of a State in Palestine of possibly millions of Jews who will act as a buffer State against any military monster who may advance from the North to seize the Canal or cut the pipe-line which provides our only oil supply in the Mediterranean, the purpose of my Bill is this: It is forgotten that it is a very ancient principle, that of preserving citizenship to subjects of a State who remain abroad. For instance, there have been more citizens of Norway living outside than in Norway in one period of that country's history. I would like to give the potentially persecuted Jew in Europe the chance, if he wishes it, of becoming a Palestinian subject. Why, for instance, should Jews in Poland, who cannot move to Palestine, not be able to take up extra-territorial citizenship? They would then become what Jews are in Palestine, protected persons under the Mandate and freemen of a State. They could pay a yearly fee for the Government of Palestine, which would make that place once again a land flowing with milk and money.

He was opposed by a Colonel Brown who declared

I understood my hon. and gallant Friend to say that Jews everywhere should have Palestinian nationality. That is just enough to inflame all the feelings of patriotism amongst Mohammedans in Palestine. I say quite seriously to my hon. and gallant Friend that statements of that kind made in this House may mean the loss of several lives of British police and soldiers in Palestine.

At the end of a tie vote the Bill was ordered to be brought in.

But it did not evolve into legislation.

And we know what happened to the Jews of Europe.

UFOs, ALCHEMY, SECRET SOCIETIES AND THE NEW WORLD ORDER      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Down through the centuries, very mysterious individuals have appeared at certain moments in human history and provided convincing demonstrations that "impossible" inventions are possible.

A "respectable burgher of North Holland" appeared "modest and simple" to the alchemist Helvetius one day in 1666. It was the stranger’s incredible knowledge that startled and inspired the alchemists of Helvetius's day, and though these learned and determined men never did acquire the philosopher's stone that would transmute lead into gold, they did fashion the seeds of the science of chemistry that has accomplished so many transmutations of the human environment and the human condition in the last three hundred years.

Out of the smoky laboratories of the alchemists, Albert le Grand produced potassium lye; Raymond Lully prepared bicarbonate of potassium; Paracelsus described zinc and introduced chemical compounds in medicine; Blaise Vigenere discovered benzoic acid; Basil Valentine perfected sulfuric acid; and Johann Friedrich Boetticher be-came the first European to produce porcelain.

While each of the above is an important discovery, there are rumors that lying amidst the musty pages of certain ancient alchemical laboratories there are recorded experiments with photography, radio transmission, phonography, and aerial flight.

Throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, there were many scholars who claimed that they had received late-night visits from mysterious members of a secret society that had accomplished the transmutation of metals, the means of prolonging life, the knowledge to see and to hear what was occurring in distant places, and the ability to travel across the heavens in heavier-than-air vehicles.

Numerous occult groups have been created around the belief that centuries ago a secret society achieved a high level of scientific knowledge that they carefully guarded from the rest of humanity. According to these occultists, certain men of genius in ancient Egypt and Persia were given access to the records of the advanced technologies of the antediluvian world of Atlantis. Many hundreds of years ago, these ancient masters learned to duplicate many of the feats of the Titans of the lost continent.

There are persistent legends in nearly every culture that tell of an Elder Race that populated the Earth millions of years ago. The Old Ones, who may originally have been of extraterrestrial origin or the survivors of highly advanced terrestrial civilization that was destroyed after the last Ice Age, were an immensely intelligent and scientifically sophisticated species who eventually chose to structure their own environment under the surface of the planet's soil and seas. The Old Ones usually remain aloof from the surface dwellers, but from time to time throughout history, they have been known to visit certain of Earth's more intelligent members in the guise of alchemist or mysterious scientists in order to offer constructive criticism and, in some cases, to give valuable advice in the material sciences.

The decision to form an ancient secret society may have been based on the members' highly developed moral sense and their recognition of the awesome position of responsibility that the discovery of such applications of ancient knowledge had placed upon them. They may have decided to keep their own counsel until the rest of the world had become enlightened enough to deal wisely with such a high degree of technical accomplishments.

From time to time, the secret society may decide the time is propitious to make one of its discoveries known to the "outside world." Such intervention in the affairs of humankind is usually accomplished by carefully feeding certain fragments of research to "outside" scientists whose work and attitude have been judged particularly deserving. When these scientists accomplish the breakthroughs in their research, they credit the success of the experiments to their own diligence, and the secrecy the society prizes so highly is maintained.

On the other hand, the secret society may feel little or no responsibility of any kind to those humans outside of their group. They may be merely biding their time until they turn the great mass of humanity into their slaves.

By the 1840s, the legend of Agharta had already been widely circulated among the mystically minded in Germany. According to this ancient tradition, the Master of the World already controlled many of the kings and rulers of the surface world by exercising his occult powers. Soon this Master and his super race would launch an invasion of Earth and subjugate all humans to his will.

If certain master magicians, disciples of the Titans, individuals of exceptional intellect, power, and wealth, actually did achieve a high degree of technical accomplishment sev¬eral centuries ago, then they could very well be responsible for a good many of the strange and mysterious vehicles seen in our skies. And if alien life-forms apprehended their advanced technology at the end of the previous century, then they might have established an alliance with the society of humans that easily appeared to be the more advanced and worthy to receive the benefits of their extraterrestrial super science.

The year 1897 may have seemed an ideal time to show the “outsiders” just how far advanced the members of the ancient secret society really were.

The science of the outsiders seemed as though it had gone about as far as it could go, and it was poised confidently on the brink of the twentieth century. Many of the world's most learned men and women were filled with pride over a host of new technological accomplishments.

In 1893, Karl Benz and Henry Ford built their first four¬wheeled automobiles. Thomas Edison's Kinetoscope (1889) was among the first practical systems of cinematography, and in 1895, Louis and Auguste Lumiere presented the first commercial projection. In that same year, Wilhelm Roentgen dis¬covered X rays, Marconi invented radio telegraphy, and Konstantin Tsiolkovsky formulated the principle of rocket reaction propulsion. In 1896, William Ramsay isolated helium, Ernest Rutherford accomplished the magnetic detection of electrical waves, and Henri Becquerel discovered radioactivity. The Royal Automobile Club was founded in London in 1897, and cars were going faster every year.

However, with all of these scientific marvels about which to boast, there were as yet no heavier-than-air aerial vehicles to occupy the efforts and the interests of potential aviators; and a good number of brilliant scientists of great reputation had gone on record with their arguments that it was aerodynamically impossible to build such a flying machine. On the other hand, the future of balloon transport seemed promising, and gondolas could be attached to carry passengers. With all the other wonders of modern science, how could anyone bemoan the lack of heavier-than-air flying machines?

And yet, in March of 1897, a bizarre aircraft, often described as resembling a cone-shaped steamboat, was seen flying across the United States and later throughout the world.

The German Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin did not build his famous airship, a rigid dirigible, until 1898. Could some mysterious unknown inventors have beaten Count von Zeppelin to the drawing board with a much more impressive vehicle, a forerunner of the modern passenger plane? Or was a secret terrestrial society of master magicians once again displaying their superiority over the outsiders?

The flights of the enigmatic airship continued until August of 1897 when the craft was sighted off the coast of Norway and over Vancouver, British Columbia on the same day.

After a twelve-year absence, the airship reappeared over England in 1909. Within a matter of days, it was sighted over New Zealand, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, West Virginia, and Tennessee. Its final appearance seems to have been over Memphis on January 20, 1910.

In 1871, occultist Edward Bulwer-Lytton wrote The Coming Race, a novel about a small group of German mystics who had discovered a race of supermen living within the Earth’s interior. The super race had built a paradise based on The Vril Force, a form of energy so powerful that the older beings had outlawed its use as a potential weapon. The Vril, was derived from the Black Sun, a large ball of “Prima Materia” that provided light and radiation to the inhabitants of the inner Earth.

In 1919, Karl Haushofer founded the Brothers of the Light Society in Berlin, and soon changed its name to the Vril Society. As Haushofer’s Vril grew in prominence, it united three major occult societies, the Lords of the Black Stone, the Black Knights of the Thule Society, and the Black Sun and chose the swastika, the hooked cross, as its symbol of the worship of the Black Sun.

As with many secret groups, there appears to have been more than one order--those who followed the Golden Sun and those who followed the Black Sun. The Black Sun, like the Swastika, is a very ancient symbol. While the Swastika represents the eternal fountain of creation, the Black Sun is even older, suggesting the very void of creation itself. The symbol on the Nazi flag is the Thule Sonnenrad (Sun Wheel), not a reversed good luck Swastika. The Black Sun can be seen in many ancient Babylonian and Assyrian places of worship.

While these societies borrowed some concepts and rites from various Hermetic groups, they placed special emphasis on the innate mystical powers of the Aryan race. The Vril and its fellow societies maintained that the Germanic/Nordic/ Teutonic people were of Aryan origin, and that Christianity had destroyed the power of the Teutonic civilization.

The secret societies formed in Germany wanted desperately to prove themselves worthy of the super humans that lived beneath the surface of the planet and they wished to be able to control the incredibly powerful Vril force. This ancient force had been known among the alchemists and magicians as the Chi, the Odic force, the Orgone, the Astral Light, and they were well aware of its transformative powers to create supermen of ordinary mortals.

In 1921, Maria Orsic (Orsitch), a medium in the society, now renamed Vril Gesellschaft, began claiming spirit messages originating from Aryan aliens on Alpha Tauri in the Aldeberan star system. Orsic and another medium named Sigrun, learned that the aliens spoke of two classes of people on their world--the Aryan, or master race, and a subservient planetary race that had evolved through mutation and climate changes. A half billion years ago, the Aryans, also known as the Elohim or Elder Race, began to colonize our solar system. On Earth, the Aryans were identified as the Sumerians until they elected to carve out an empire for themselves in the hollow of the planet.

Students of the Vril Society also insist that extraterrestrials worked with Nazi scientists to create early models of flying saucers. According to some researchers, an alien tutor race secretly began cooperating with certain German scientists from the Thule, the Vril, and the Black Sun societies in the late 1920s. Working in underground bases with the alien intelligences, the Nazis mastered antigravity space flight, established space stations, accomplished time travel, an developed their spacecraft to warp speeds.

In 1922, members of Thule and Vril claim to have built the Jenseitsflugmaschine, the Other World Flight Machine, based on the psychic messages received from the Aldebaran aliens. W. O. Schulmann of the Technical University of Munich was in charge of the project until it was halted in 1924, and the craft was stored in Messerschmitt’s Augsburg. In 1937, after Hitler came into power, he authorized the construction of the Rund flugzeug, the round, or disk-shaped vehicle, for military use and for spaceflight.

In April, 1942, Nazi Germany sent out an expedition composed of a number of its most visionary scientists to seek a military vantage point in the hollow earth. Although the expedition of leading scientists left at a time when the Third Reich was putting maximum effort in their drive against the Allies, Goering, Himmler, and Hitler are said to have enthusiastically endorsed the project. Steeped in the more esoteric teachings of metaphysics, the Fuehrer had long been convinced that Earth was concave and that a master race lived on the inside of the planet.

The Nazi scientists who left for the island of Rugen had complete confidence in the validity of their quest. In their minds, such a coup as discovering the opening to the Inner World would not only provide them with a military advantage, but it would go a long way in convincing the Masters who lived there that the German people truly deserved to mix their blood with them in the creation of a hybrid master race to occupy the surface world, truly a New World Order.

In 1991when President George H.W. Bush began speaking about a New World Order to beef up his campaign for reelection, evangelist Pat Robertson, who was briefly a presidential candidate, passionately spoke out that "new world order" was actually a code for a secret group that sought to replace Christian society with a worldwide atheistic socialist dictatorship.

Bush, the conspiracy buffs charged, was a member of one of the world's most devilish and powerful secret societies: the Order of Skull and Bones. What was more, according to these same conspiracists, Bush was linked to the Bilderbergers and the Trilateral Commission, dangerous elitist organizations.

At about the same time that President Bush's alleged secret affiliations were being exposed, a number of fundamentalist evangelists began to take their first real notice of the UFO phenomenon and saw the mysterious aerial objects as the "signs in the skies" referred to in apocalyptic literature and in the book of Revelation. It was a short leap or many evangelists to begin to blend accounts of UFOs with the secret societies of top U.S. government officials, politicians, corporate chairmen, international bankers, and many others who sought to bring into being the dreaded "New World Order."

According to the proponents of this cosmic conspiracy, when President Ronald Reagan gave his famous "alien invasion" speech to the entire United Nations General Assembly in September of 1987, he had already secretly advised representatives of the 176 member nations that the leaders of their respective governments must meet the demands of the technologically superior extraterrestrials or be destroyed.

As Reagan said in his speech: "I occasionally think how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world. And yet I ask you, is not an alien threat already among us?"

Some UFO researchers have warned that highly placed members of an ancient secret society that can trace its origins beyond the temples of ancient Egypt to Atlantis have established a plan to create a carefully staged "alien invasion" that will convince the masses of the world that a real-life War of the Worlds alien attack is about to begin. People of all nations will believe their leaders who say that it has been learned that the aliens are a benevolent species and that unconditional surrender to them is for everyone's own good.

Immediately following the "surrender" to the aliens, the leaders of the ancient secret society will form a One World Government, a New World Order, thus fulfilling biblical prophecies about a return to the days of Babylon.

Concern over interference by secret societies in the affairs of government was considered very real long before our present-day paranoia. For hundreds of years, certain scholars have worried about global conspiracies being conducted in secret by such groups as the Knights Templar, the Vril, the Thule, the Black Sun, and the Illuminati--who may all be waiting until the pro¬pitious time to complete world domination.

In 1876, Benjamin Disraeli, British prime minister, warned: "The governments of the present day have to deal not merely with other governments, with emperors, kings, and ministers, but also with the secret societies which have everywhere their unscrupulous agents, and can at the last moment upset all the governments' plans."

Saudi-led Coalition Strikes School Bus In Yemen, Killing At Least 29 Children       Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Dozens of students were returning from a summer camp when their driver paused to grab a something at a market in Yemen's Saada province. It was there, as the students sat waiting to resume their journey home on Thursday, that a Saudi-led coalition airstrike hit their school bus.

Hours later, well after the blast's violent rumble gave way to sirens and the victim's screams, a clearer sense of the human cost has emerged: At least 29 children under the age of 15, some as young as 6 years old, were killed in the attack, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Citing "local officials," the head of the international aid group's delegation in Yemen says that in total at least 50 people died and dozens more were injured.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack in a statement released by his spokesperson, saying he "expresses his deepest condolences to the families of the victims."

"The Secretary-General calls on all parties to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law, in particular the fundamental rules of distinction, proportionality and precautions in attack," his spokesperson, Farhan Haq, said Thursday. "The Secretary-General emphasizes that all parties must take constant care to spare civilians and civilian objects in the conduct of military operations."

And Guterres called for a prompt independent investigation into the incident.

Saudi Arabia, the driving force behind a coalition of its Arab neighbors, saw no reason to apologize, however. In a statement released through the state-run Saudi Press Agency, Riyadh called the airstrike a "legitimate military action" conducted in accordance with international law.

The coalition's spokesperson said the operation sought to target the militants responsible for a missile intercepted over Saudi civilian territory on Wednesday. Upon interception, Saudis say the missile exploded into fragments that killed one Yemeni civilian and injured 11 other people.

"The Coalition will take all necessary measures against the terrorist, criminal acts of the terrorist Iranian-Houthi militia, such as recruiting child soldiers, throwing them in battlefields and using them as tools and covers to their terrorist acts," coalition spokesperson Col. Turki al-Malki said in a statement.

The Iran-backed Shiite militia has controlled Yemen's northwest, including Saada, since ousting the country's internationally recognized government from the capital, Sanaa, in 2014.

It is with the stated aim of dislodging the Houthis, and restoring the previous government, that the Sunni coalition has waged a years-long airstrike campaign in the country with the support of the U.S. Since large-scale fighting erupted in 2015, the ensuing violence has left more than 10,000 people killed and the country's health infrastructure so badly battered, nearly 18 million Yemenis lack reliable access to food.

Norway Refugee Council Secretary-General Jan Egeland described Thursday's airstrike differently: "grotesque, shameful, indignant." He asserted that it evinces a "blatant disregard for rules of war when [a] bus carrying innocent school children is fair game for attack."

Houthi media broadcast what appears to be graphic scenes of the aftermath, depicting children drenched in blood and burned black by the blast. They wail in pain as medics attempt to treat them, standing beside boys missing limbs and gazing on with shell-shocked stares.

The frame then hovers over what appears to be a pile of bloodied bodies, unmoving.

Asked about the airstrike by the U.S.-backed coalition, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert told reporters "we are certainly concerned."

"We call on the Saudi-led coalition to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident," she said.

Thursday's attack marks a grim milestone in a war that lately has seen yet another escalation, as coalition-backed Yemeni government forces have made a recent push to reclaim the key port city of Hodeidah from rebels. Just last week at least 55 people died in the city during a particularly bloody exchange of fire in residential areas and outside a hospital.

"How many more children will suffer or die before those who can act, do by putting a stop to this scourge?" UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore asked.

"It's hard to believe we live in a world where children should live in fear of such attacks, yet here we are," she added. "This doesn't have to be their reality though. Parties to the conflict and those who have influence over them, including Security Council members, can and should choose to end this catastrophe for the sake of Yemen's children."

It's one for fans of Chromatics or even early Madonna...

Das Body are only just beginning to sketch out their universe, only just beginning to detail the outline of their realm.

Their debut EP - self-titled, of course - arrives on September 28th (order LINK), led by recent dark-pop single 'Boys'.

A frozen slice of 80s machine funk, the single is now followed by something different, something that plies an outsider aesthetic.

'Graceland' feels like early Madonna sluiced through the Drive soundtrack, as if Chromatics had suddenly decided to remix Robyn.

Driving head-long past neon-lit fjords, it's powered by Elie Linden's dramatic vocal. She explains:

'Graceland' "is more of a feeling than a song. Playing it live feels like starring in a neo-noir movie with Elvis. Graceland is like a battle between the never-ending drumbeat and the unsettling vocals, held together by some simple chords. It was an intense journey to write, it's an intense journey to play and it's probably an intense listen."

Set to play Norway's Oya festival this weekend, this is the perfect opportunity to soak up Das Body.

Tune in now.

Apple Pay Gains Momentum With Estimated 250 Million Users, 200% Transaction Growth Predicted Next Year      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
An estimated 31 percent of iPhone users have made a purchase with Apple Pay in the past year, up from 25 percent a year ago, according to a new Apple Pay estimates shared today by Loup Ventures analyst Gene Munster.

Apple Pay now has an estimated 252 million users, equating to 31 percent of the active installed iPhone base, according to Munster.

Apple does not provide official details on how many people use Apple Pay, but in a recent earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that there were upwards of 1 billion Apple Pay transactions in Q3 2018, triple the amount from a year ago.

Based on these figures combined with past Apple reports of yearly Apple Pay growth, Munster expects transaction growth of 200 percent over the course of the next 12 months.

Bank adoption of Apple Pay is also growing steadily, and during the same earnings call, Apple announced that 4,900 banks support the feature. The number of banks supporting Apple Pay has increased by 1,701 since the December quarter, marking a 55 percent growth in North America, 141 percent in Asia, and 370 percent in Europe.

Munster believes that just 20 percent of global smartphone users use their phone as a wallet, a number that he expects to rise to 80 percent in the future.

Apple is well-poised to position the iPhone as the premium digital wallet on the market given that it's the only digital wallet option "with all five payment pillars" defined as mobile, desktop, in-app, peer to peer, and point of sale.

Munster says Apple Pay is much more popular overseas, with 85 percent of users being international compared to 15 percent in the United States. Apple Pay is estimated to have 38 million users in the U.S. and 215 million in the 20+ other countries where Apple Pay is available.

Apple Pay works in retail locations with the Apple Watch and iPhone, and in apps and on the web with iPhone, iPad, and Mac. As of iOS 11.3, Apple also supports Apple Pay Cash payments, a feature that is currently limited to the United States.

Apple Pay is available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Switzerland, Hong Kong, France, Russia, China, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, Taiwan, Ireland, Italy, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, UAE, Brazil, Ukraine, Norway, and Poland at the current time, and it is also set to expand to Germany later this year.

Perhaps Spain should consider the Norway Model simultaneously with that verbal consent law for sex. About 40% of Spanish men demand sex from a supply of 300,000 prostitutes--this in a country with a pop. of 46 million, where prost. is neither legal nor illegal. A weak economy forces even more women into prostitution and also discourages divorces from bad and battering marriages. Let’s hope all these cabinet level women will have a positive impact on Spanish women.

The Burgeoning Uzbekistan Telecommunication Investigations      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

This article was reprinted with permission from FCPA Professor

For approximately two years, Dutch telecommunications company VimpelCom  and Swedish telecommunications company TeliaSonera have been under scrutiny concerning its business practices in Uzbekistan (see here and here prior posts).

The scrutiny has sort of flown under the radar, but recent events suggest that the scrutiny, as well as related scrutiny of other companies, may be on par with arguably the most high profile instance of multi-company FCPA scrutiny (the 2009 – 2012 enforcement actions against KBR/ Halliburton, Snamprogetti / ENI, Technip, JGC Corp. and Marubeni all in connection with the Bonny Island natural gas project in Nigeria – with the exception of Marubeni all of these enforcement actions are in the top 8 in terms of overall settlement amounts).

Recently, VimpelCom, a company with shares traded on NASDAQ, disclosed:

“As previously disclosed, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”), the U.S. Department of Justice (“DOJ”), and the Dutch Public Prosecution Service (Openbaar Ministerie) (“OM”) are conducting investigations relating primarily to VimpelCom Ltd.’s (the “Company” or “VimpelCom”) business in Uzbekistan and prior dealings with Takilant Ltd. As announced in February of 2015, the Company has been exploring resolution of the Company’s potential liabilities. The Company continues to cooperate with the authorities. Based on its ongoing assessment of the investigation during the third quarter of 2015, the Company will make a provision in the amount of US$900 million in its third quarter financial statements. The discussions with the authorities are ongoing and, until concluded, there can be no certainty as to the final cost to the Company of any such resolution or the nature, likelihood or timing of a definitive resolution. At this time, the Company will make no further comments on the ongoing discussions.”

The amount mentioned in the disclosure caught many by surprise.

The disclosure amount is a bit ambiguous. For instance, does it refer to a settlement amount (and if so how will it be apportioned between U.S. and Dutch authorities)? Likewise, does the disclosure amount refer to pre-enforcement action professional fees and expenses (often the largest financial hit to a company under FCPA scrutiny) and/or expected post-enforcement action professional fees and expenses?

Regardless, it would appear that a future FCPA enforcement action against VimpelCom is likely to land on the top ten list of FCPA settlement amounts.

What is certain is that days after the above announcement, plaintiffs lawyers came out of the woodwork and filed class action securities fraud complaints (see herehere, and here).

As to TeliaSonera, a company with ADRs registered with the SEC, since 2013 the company has been conducting a review of its operations in Uzbekistan as well as other Eurasia countries including Azerbaijan.

VimpelCom and TeliaSonera are not the only telecommunications under scrutiny.

Russia-based Mobile TeleSystems PJSC, a company with shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, has also been FCPA scrutiny in connection with Uzbekistan business and recently disclosed:

“[A]s the Company had previously disclosed, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and the SEC are conducting an investigation into MTS’s business activities in Uzbekistan. In addition, MTS publicly confirmed that it had been referenced in a civil forfeiture complaint, filed by the DOJ, directed at certain assets of an unnamed Uzbek government official. The complaint alleges that MTS made corrupt payments to gain access to the Uzbek telecommunications market. The Complaint alleges among other things that MTS and certain other parties made corrupt payments to the unnamed Uzbek official to assist MTS entering and operating in the Uzbekistan telecommunications market. The Complaint is solely directed towards assets held by the unnamed Uzbek official, and none of MTS’s assets are affected by the Complaint. Recent announcements with regard to Uzbekistan by MTS’s peers in the market have naturally raised questions among stakeholders and partners to MTS’s management. At this time, MTS can reiterate that it is cooperating with the investigation, and it is too early to draw any conclusions based on the experiences of others in the Uzbekistan market. As there have yet been no new developments, MTS can make no further comment or provide new information.”

Last, but certainly not least, Norway-based Telenor recently announced that its CEO has resigned and that it is divesting its ownership interest in VimpelCom. Shortly thereafter the company disclosed:

“On 14 March 2014 VimpelCom announced that the company was under investigation by US and Dutch authorities for its operations in Uzbekistan. Telenor Group has status as witness in these investigations and has cooperated with the investigating authorities. As a witness, Telenor has shared all requested information, and interviews have been conducted with relevant persons in Telenor. Telenor Group sees VimpelCom’s announcement today as a serious development that significantly increases our concerns in relation to the potential outcome of the still ongoing investigations. Telenor Group has a financial participation with an economic stake of 33 per cent in VimpelCom. In its financial reporting, Telenor includes VimpelCom as an associated company.”

The above disclosure was thereafter followed by this disclosure from Telenor:

Telenor Board of Directors has assigned Deloitte Advokatfirma AS (Deloitte) to perform a review of Telenor’s handling and oversight of the minority ownership in VimpelCom. The review will focus on Telenor’s handling of its ownership in VimpelCom which covers the Telenor nominees on the VimpelCom Supervisory Board and Telenor’s follow-up as a shareholder. In addition the review will cover actions and decisions by Telenor nominees and Telenor employees in relation to VimpelCom’s investment in Uzbekistan. The review will assess facts and identify learning points for future governance and organization of Telenor’s ownerships. This would cover both the formal governance structure and the practical handling of the ownerships. The review will cover the period from 2005 until this date. The conclusions and recommendations of the review will be made public.”

What interest does the U.S. have in investigating alleged bribery of Uzbekistan officials or family members by Dutch, Swedish, Russian and Norwegian telecom companies?

Probably as much interest as the U.S. had in investigating and bringing enforcement actions against Dutch, Italian, French and Japanese companies for bribing Nigerian officials in the Bonny Island, Nigeria enforcement actions.

Norway: Inflation on the upside – Nordea Markets      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Erik Johannes Bruce, Research Analyst at Nordea Markets, notes that the Norway’s inflation ended up at the upside to Norges Bank’s forecast and all is set for a September hike.

Key Quotes

“Core inflation in July came in at 1.4% y/y up from 1.1% last month. Nordea was 1.1% while Norges Bank and consensus was 1.2%.”

“The main reason for the rise in inflation is food prices which rose sharply and much more than normal in July. That was main surprise to us.”

“A September hike is of course even more likely after today’s figure being 0.2% point above Norges Bank. It also strengthens our belief in inflation hovering around 1.5% in the second part of 2018. But we see no reason to raise our forecast significantly.”

“Norges Bank has 1,5% as August forecast. We find it likely that we end up close to that. Possibly somewhat on the upside but not by 0.2% as this month.”

Inflation data amongst market movers today – Danske Bank      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Inflation releases are a key focus today in the Scandies as well as the US, while geopolitical issues also will continue to be a key market issue, according to analysts at Danske Bank.

Key Quotes

“While July headline inflation in Denmark is set to decline due to base effects, it will increase modestly in Sweden to 2.3% (from 2.2% in June), while the increase will be more pronounced in Norway rising from 2.6% in June to 2.9% in July.”

“US CPI core index likely rose +0.2% m/m in line with the recent trend, leaving the inflation rate unchanged at 2.3% y/y.”

“The first estimate of UK GDP growth in Q2 is due out today, which we expect to show that growth rebounded to 0.4% q/q from 0.2% q/q in Q1.”

“In the emerging market space, look out for developments in the relationship between Russia and Turkey on the one side and the US on the other, in relation to the recent US sanctions against the two countries, which has caused a slump in their assets.”

Norway: CPI-ATE to slip to 1.0% y/y in July - TDS      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

There are some odd base effects at play for Norway’s July inflation, and analysts at TD Securities are looking for CPI-ATE to slip from 1.1% in June to only 1.0% y/y in July (mkt 1.2%).

Key Quotes

“It is likely to bounce back to the 1.5% area through most of the rest of the year from August. This is something that the Norges Bank is likely to look through entirely, as it should be entirely temporary, and they seem to be more focused on growth anyways.”

Good idea! But who are going to be in these judges’ seats? How can we trust anyone? • Most of the educated, who can advise on harmfulness of Glyphosate have been bought by Monsanto. • Most of our university professors were bought by NGO's who participated in the Regime Change. • Some doctors and higher Health officials were bought by the drug companies. • Some Buddhist monks who are supporting anti-national camp have been bought by Norway and NGO’s. • Some Buddhist monks who are acting as they are guardians of the Buddha sasana are being funded by the Church What is the guarantee we have that a true and clean periotic leader is safe from these "civilian" judges when the whole West and India are trying to destroy this nation? Anybody can be bought and manipulated to match their pay master’s agenda. There is no escape unless all people are becoming true humans leaving the wild habit of craving and manipulating to get more for its own advantage. Currently we can see that certain sections of our society are acting as hyenas in the jungle by: • telling lies to change history to create own Tamil Home Land, • trying to sell whatever possible for today’s living, • trying to destroy the greatest ever philosophy from the surface of the earth, • trying to jail who ever coming forward to defend the mother land. • trying to jail own agents to demonstrate that they are holy and clean and make them more stronger so they can come back and do bigger damages. It is actually the law of the jungle and hell in operation.
10 Things You Should Know About Scandinavian Beefcake      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Ten things you should know about Scandinavian beefcake

1.  Norwegian, Swedish, and Denmark are so closely related that if you learn one, you can make yourself understood reasonably well in the others.

I want to go to your room and see your sausage.
Norwegian: Jeg vil gå til rommet ditt og se pølsen din
Swedish: Jag vill gå till ditt rum och se din korv
Danish:  Jeg vil gerne gå til dit værelse og se din pølse

2. Icelandic strives to stay as close to its Old Norse roots as possible, so it's a little different:

Ég vil fara í herbergið þitt og sjá pylsuna þína

3. And Finnish is a Finno-Ugric language, with no connection.

Haluan mennä huoneeseesi ja nähdä makkaraasi

But not to worry, most Finns under the age of 50 speak English, and over 50, Swedish:

4. It's not all blond Nordic types.  Only around 70-80% of ethnic Swedes, Norwegians, and Danes have blond hair, and between 5 and 15% of the population has ancestry in the Middle East, Africa, and East Asia.

5.  Norway has won many swimming records.

6. Martin Kjelstrom, a bodybuilder from Sweden, was part of a gigantic doping scandal that resulted in over 60 arrests.  (Doping is using illicit drugs to enhance your performance.)

7. Thomas Stellander, a Norwegian bodybuilder, has won three national championships.

8.  Icelanders aren't much for swimming, but they're into wrestling.  This is the Icelandic wrestling team from the 1912 Olympics.

9. Lauri Kallma is not a wrestler or bodybuilder, he's a Finnish track star.

10. When I searched for "Lapp bodybuilder," this guy popped up.  His name is Jerry Johnson, and he won a bodybuilding competition in Melbourne in 2015.  I highly doubt that he's from Lapland.

SEATON SANDS 09 AUG 2018.      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
The Day started at 6-02am.
Beach Buoy and Stubborn Dog jumped out of the Car to see three pieces of rubbish from an Energy Drink Pack scattered just yards from the Rubbish Bin. Obviously not enough Energy then to reach the bin? Beach Buoy scooped them up and placed them into the Bin.
The two walked to the Water's Edge.

Behind them in the distance; What a shock! It seems that the weekend 7am club do a weekday version; a smaller, 6am club.
The earlier club seemed to do a shorter walk and whereas usually they would catch Beach Buoy up, today they had turned back. Beach Buoy wondered if there was a Beach Buoy Doppelganger at the other end of the Beach writing in his Doppelganger Book about his version of The 6, 6-30,7 am club?

Beach Buoy headed South and changed tack a little as some Shingle scattered higher up the Beach had tempted him away from the water.
He glanced back at the Sea to see a Cormorant rise from the waves. It seemed to struggle to get height  like an Overloaded Cargo Plane.

The tide was out a canny way.
The Sunlight looked a little like a strip light, but for a few seconds it seemed to turn into a Spot light as if a show was beginning to start. Beach buoy could almost hear someone saying."One ,two, One,Two testing astray readied the sound system.
The Little Dog cocked his leg at the Driftwood Reptile that had been blogged about recently, as they continued along.
Up to the North Gare the Council Beach Cleaner had continued to dump it's haul of Rocks, stones and whatever else it had scooped up. The Beach at that end was now looking like an ancient burial ground, with it's body sized heaps of stones.
Out in the Bay a marker of another type played host to The Sea Serpent which twisted and turned below it.

On the way back, Beach Buoy found a Mermaid's Mirror.
He also found some fishing line and hooks nearby and hoped no one had found success fishing for Mermaids?
The fishing gear joined his beach clean items in his bag.

At the water's edge once again, Beach Buoy watched as the Terns dived for fish. They were diving in quite shallow water. They fell from the Sky liked badly designed Paper Aeroplanes.
One dived right next to a Seagull who was bobbing about in the shallows. As the Tern flew off with some breakfast the Seagull seemed to look on jealously and say "How do you do that?"- "I can't even see the fish!" as if to prove his point the Seagull put his head into the Sea as if looking to see. It surfaced again with a shake of it's head.
Beach Buoy knew by now that little fish in the Bay meant larger wildlife may be near.

Little Fish x Terns + Big Fish = Seals + Dolphins.

Two Joggers approached.
One in Black, was up near The Dunes and looked like he was struggling in the Soft Sand; he was. He stopped and his hands went onto his hips.
Down on the Wet but Firmer Sand a Red Jogger jogged on, well he did until he thought no one was watching and he too took a break.
Beach Buoy headed back. He had a run of his own to do; An Airport Run.

 Arrivederci.

It looked like it may rain.

Ad the walk progressed it defiantly looked like it may rain.

It did rain.

How to Say “Happy Birthday” in 25 Different Languages      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Happy Birthday to you! The gifts, the cake, the celebration…

Birthdays are a joyful occasion, to be sure!

Traditions for celebrations around the world always vary, but birthdays are one of the things that all people have in common, even if they speak different languages. So take this as an opportunity for more speaking practice! After all, who doesn’t like to be wished a Happy Birthday? You could even plan a birthday celebration in the language you’re learning!

Have you wondered if other cultures sing a Happy Birthday song, like in English? Do they give gifts? What about cake? Read on and learn how to say Happy Birthday in many languages around the world, and the cultural meaning behind it.

Happy Birthday in Spanish: Feliz Cumpleaños

Translated as “Happy Completed Years,” everyone’s birthday is a big day of celebration in most Spanish-speaking countries. In Mexico, they sing their own unique birthday song, Las Mañanitas (“Little Mornings”). And instead of blowing out candles on your cake, the birthday boy or girl has to eat the first bite without using utensils or hands. Usually, a family member will shove the cake in their face, all while singing “Mordida! Mordida!” And, of course, a birthday party is not complete without the world-famous piñata!

Happy Birthday in French: Bon Anniversaire

In French, people wish each other a “Good Birthday!” Birthday parties in France are much like those in English-speaking countries. They celebrate with a big party, cake and presents, and sing Joyeux Anniversaire. The big difference is that schoolchildren have Wednesdays off, and go to school on Saturdays. So most birthday parties are actually thrown on Wednesday when all the kids are out of school. As for Sundays, that’s considered family time. So most parents won’t organise birthday parties then.

In Quebec, you’ll hear Bonne fête! far more often than Bon anniversaire. This literally translates as “Good party!”

Happy Birthday in Italian: Buon Compleanno

The most notable thing about birthdays in Italy? They prefer to stay home! The food and cakes are often homemade. But when it’s your 18th birthday, everyone goes all out. It’s not unusual to see an 18th birthday party with hundreds of people wishing you a “Good Birthday!”

Happy Birthday in German: Alles Gute zum Geburtstag

This is more accurately translated as, “All the best on your birthday.” Birthday parties started in Germany in 1200 A.D. and are known as kinderfeste. In Germany, it’s considered quite bad luck to wish someone a Happy Birthday early, and they have many fun celebrations based on their age. Such as turning 16 and getting flour dumped all over you, or having eggs cracked over your head when you turn 18!

Happy Birthday in Japanese: お誕生日おめでとうございます (Otanjoubi Omedetou Gozaimasu)

“Congratulations on your birthday!” In Japan, they celebrate Shichi-Go-San, which literally means 7-5-3. These are lucky numbers and children go to a Shinto shrine on 15th November if they had a lucky birthday that year. They pray and give thanks for their good health and strength. All children go when they are three years old, boys when they are five, and girls when they are seven.

Happy Birthday in Korean: 생일 축하 (Saeng-il Chugha)

Also translated as “Congratulations on your birthday.” In Korea, 100 days after you’re born, you celebrate your first birthday! Parents celebrate their child’s life with a small feast, and they predict the child’s future by the items he or she picks up. If the child is sick, the parents will skip over the day so as to not bring bad luck on their child. They also send rice cakes to as many friends and family as possible because sharing rice cakes brings a long life. Lastly, they offer up food such as rice to Samshin Halmoni, the Grandmother Spirit, for taking care of the baby.

Happy Birthday in Chinese: 生日快乐 (Shēngrì Kuàilè)

In China, birthdays are mostly celebrated when you are very young or older than 50. It’s common on your birthday to eat longevity noodles without breaking them so you bring in good luck and a long life. Some people even wait until they are 60 years old to have their first birthday bash! There are also some taboos about certain ages, so men don’t celebrate their 40th birthdays, and women don't celebrate 30, 33, or 66.

The literal translation of Shēngrì Kuàilè is something like, “Birthday is Happy.”

Happy Birthday in Cantonese: 生日快樂 (Sang Yat Fai Lok)

Be careful with your birthday gifts! Never give a clock or a pair of shoes as a gift, as the words for them sound like “funeral,” which is terrible luck. And gifts should be given wrapped in red or gold paper, especially for an elderly person.

Happy Birthday in Russian: С днем рождения (S Dnem Rozhdeniya)

In Russia, the birthday tradition is to pull on the birthday boy or girl’s ears by how many years old he or she is. They tell the child, “Grow up -- don’t be noodles,” so the child will grow up strong. They don’t sing a birthday song, but if the person has survived a dangerous incident - like a car crash - they celebrate that day as their second birthday.

Happy Birthday in Portuguese: Feliz Aniversário

Feliz aniversário means “Happy Anniversary," and it's the frequent translation for "Happy Birthday." But it’s more common to just say “Parabéns” (“Congratulations”). Birthdays in Portugal are very similar to those in English-speaking countries. But birthdays in Brazil, like Russia, include pulling on the ears for good luck. They also decorate their homes with brightly-coloured paper flowers and banners for the festivities.

Happy Birthday in Dutch: Gefeliciteerd Met Je Verjaardag

“Congratulations on your birthday!” Birthdays are a big deal in the Netherlands. And most people have a Birthday Calendar that, interestingly, they keep by the toilet! The calendar reminds them of everyone’s birthdays for the year because forgetting one (or trying to skip your own!) is a major slight to your loved ones. A 50th birthday is the biggest celebration of all, as it’s said the man or woman “sees Abraham” or “sees Sarah” – referring to the biblical couple who bore a child in old age.

Happy Birthday in Afrikaans: Veels Geluk Met Jou Verjaarsdag

Like Dutch, this saying means “Congratulations on your birthday.” Do you see a consistent theme here? Most countries say “congratulations” instead of “happy.” In South Africa, the 21st birthday is the most significant. Parents usually give their children a key made of gold, silver, or aluminium, to symbolise unlocking the future and all it has to offer.

Happy Birthday in Polish: Wszystkiego Najlepszego Z Okazji Urodzin

“All the best for your birthday!” In Poland, they have their own birthday song which goes: “Sto lat, sto lat, niech żyje żyje nam” (“A hundred years, a hundred years may they live”). It’s also common to have a separate celebration for your birthday called, imieniny. This is a celebration on the feast day of the saint the person is named after!

Happy Birthday in Swedish: Grattis På Födelsedagen

“Birthday congratulations!” The Swedish love celebrating birthdays, and often wake up the birthday boy or girl by bringing breakfast and presents in bed. They sing their own birthday song, “ja, ma du leva” ("Yes, may you live"). They traditionally celebrate with cake coated in green marzipan, and presents are wrapped in the colours of the Swedish flag: blue and gold.

Happy Birthday in Danish: Tillykke Med Fødselsdagen

“Good wishes for your birthday!” The Danes make a BIG deal about birthdays. They have a huge love for their flag, and a miniature flagpole by your birthday cake (or on your birthday cake) is a must. They also make great fun with the Danish birthday song. The birthday boy or girl gets to choose which instruments the singers will pretend to play while singing! (Like air-guitar, except nearly a full band or orchestra.) It’s quite a lively event.

Happy Birthday in Norwegian: Gratulerer Med Dagen

“Congratulations with the day!” In Norway, it’s a big deal to celebrate “round” birthdays – 30, 40, 50, and so on. They’ll sing “Hurra for deg som fyller ditt år” (Hurray for you who fills the year) and host a huge party. For children in school, the birthday child will dance in front of the class while the others sing the Norwegian birthday song.

Happy Birthday in Finnish: Hyvää Syntymäpäivää

While “Hyvää syntymäpäivää” is most commonly said, you can also say, “Onnea syntymäpäivänäsi,” which is more common on birthday cards and Facebook. The Finnish also celebrate Name Day, where a different name is assigned to each day of the year. The day that your name is assigned to, you get to celebrate!

Happy Birthday in Tagalog: Maligayang Kaarawan

“Happy wishes!” Because the Philippines is predominantly Catholic, birthdays often start with Mass. They have four big birthday milestones: 1st birthday, 7th, 18th (for girls), and 21st (for boys). Seventh birthdays are celebrated as the age which kids make the first steps towards adulthood. This is the age where kids are held more accountable for their actions and start primary school. A girl’s 18th birthday is called her “debut” and is celebrated with 18 flowers, 18 candles, and 18 treasures.

Happy Birthday in Swahili: Furaha ya Kuzaliwa

“Happiness for the day of being born.” Birthdays aren’t a major thing in most Swahili-speaking countries, and many times it’s only the day of birth that's celebrated. The baby’s birth is cause for a big community celebration and party. Each group has individual traditions – even as simple as the baby’s first journey with his or her mother.

Happy Birthday in Hindi: जन्मदिन की शुभकामनाएं (Janmadin Kee Shubhakaamanaen)

“Good wishes for your birthday.” In many parts of India, birthdays are celebrated with both Western and Hindu practices. A birthday usually starts with a blessing at a temple, abundant prayers, and a mixture of rice and turmeric paste anointed on the forehead. Then the day's followed with more Western traditions such as the Happy Birthday song and cake cutting.

Happy Birthday in Bengali: শুভ জন্মদিন (Śubha Janmadina)

Birthday celebrations are not very common in Bangladesh. But when a baby is born, sweets are given out amongst family and friends to celebrate. They also hold a small celebration for the naming ceremony.

Happy Birthday in Tamil: பிறந்தநாள் வாழ்த்துக்கள் (Piṟantanāḷ Vāḻttukkaḷ)

This translates as “Wishing success and happiness on your birthday.” In Sri Lanka, babies celebrate their first birthday at 31 days old and receive a special gift from their parents. Usually it’s a good luck charm, one that the child keeps with them for the rest of their life. Going to a shrine and doing good deeds to attract good karma on one’s birthday is also common tradition.

Happy Birthday in Telugu: పుట్టినరోజు శుభాకాంక్షలు (Puṭṭinarōju śubhākāṅkṣalu)

In the Telugu-speaking region of Andhra Pradesh, girls will often decorate their hair for their birthday. They'll weave in many flowers (think of Rapunzel’s braided hair in the film Tangled) and will receive gifts of turmeric rice from their parents.

Happy Birthday in Malayalam: ജന്മദിനാശംസകൾ (Janmadināśansakaḷ)

In the southern state of Kerala, India, birthdays don’t always follow the Gregorian calendar. Many South Indians follow the Malayalam calendar instead. This system calculates their birthdays based on astrology. So many times, their birthdays aren't celebrated on their day of birth, but their astrological birthday.

Happy Birthday in Arabic: عيد مولد سعيد (Eyd Mawlid Saeid)

“Happy feast of birth.” Birthday celebrations are not always a priority in Arabic-speaking countries. But most celebrations are like those in Western culture. In Egypt, some people celebrate the birth of the baby by dipping the child in the Nile river, a ceremony stemming from Pharaonic times. On the seventh day after birth, they hold a celebration called subu and celebrate with many flowers, fruit, and rituals for good luck.

Happy Birthday in Esperanto: Feliĉan Naskiĝtagon

Although Esperanto is an artificially-constructed language, it does have one birthday tie: an Esperanto holiday, Zamenhof's Birthday. Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof created Esperanto to be a universal second language and to promote internationalism. So, people who speak the language use his birthday as a good excuse to get together.

A Jewish person in particular has to be a fool to do what these two tried to do! They put themselves in danger. Hopefully they have WISED up! One is 21 and the other one is 23. WHY aren't they WORKING? What kind of "volunteer work" were they going to do on a farm? Why didn't the people on the farm discourage this?

Numbers at NY Stewart Airport on the up since Norwegian Ireland flight launch      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

General Manager Ed Harrison, the man at the helm of fast-growing New York Stewart International Airport, has revealed that passenger numbers have doubled since budget airline Norwegian began its transatlantic services in June last year.

Passenger traffic continues to flood into the Orange County airport — just 60 miles north of New York City — thanks to Norwegian’s flights servicing Edinburgh, Belfast, Dublin, Shannon and Berg in Norway.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey official says he is delighted with the success of the airport. "With Norwegian bringing in 250,000, to 300,000 passengers since its launch, it’s really stimulating the market,” says Harrison.

Stewart International is easily accessible to mid-town Manhattan for visitors coming over from Ireland via their Stewart Airport Express. For a $21 fare, visitors can take the 80-minute express bus into the heart of New York City.

Up up and away: Norwegian flight!

And it's not all one-way traffic from Ireland. Harrison says Hudson Valley residents are choosing to fly out of the airport to Europe and to visit Belfast, “where they tell me there's better golf than in Scotland."

The partnership between Norwegian and New York Stewart International has created 230 new jobs and generated an estimated $36 million in annual economic activity.

A recent keynote speaker at the New York-New Belfast conference, Harrison says that there are two major construction projects in the works at the airport that will further open up and drive tourism in upstate New York.

“We have the NY Air Show taking place on September 15 and 16 featuring the US Air Force Thunderbirds. This is a major event for us with up to 20,000 people a day coming to see it and traveling for it. The event has a $6m economic impact on the local community from security, hiring of food vendors, and all the hotels in the area are full. The Thunderbirds are like rock stars, you’d think The Beatles were here, it’s an awful lot of fun and a great day for the airport. It’s just one of many events that the New York metropolitan area has to offer travelers who are coming through Stewart.

“We have the world’s largest Legoland under construction locally, as we speak, and it's due to open in 2020."

Harrison, who was based at Newark Liberty International Airport up until four years ago recalls how his boss pitched him his new posting. "He said, 'Ed, what are you doing Monday?' "I said ‘I’m coming to work’ and he said, 'Well you are going to be reporting as General Manager at Stewart International'.”

Adds Harrison: "I was tasked with growing the business at Stewart International and that’s what I have been doing.”

He continued: “It’s been a great opportunity for me to be here at Stewart. I have a great team and the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey has invested a lot of money into the airport. We are planning to invest another $40 million to build a permanent 20,000 square foot U.S. Customs federal inspection station for all our guests flying in who want to go through a world class hall customs clearance. We are making investments and expecting a lot more traffic to come from Ireland in the time ahead."

World Markets Roiled As Turkey Currency Crisis Goes Global      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

For once it's not about trade wars... but the alternative is hardly better.

European stocks tumbled most in a month, following Asian shares lower following contagion fears that Turkey’s economic problems will spill over into the euro zone and beyond. The Euro sank, while the safe haven dollar advanced alongside Treasuries, with the 10Y back under 2.90%. The Turkish Lira initially plunged and fell 45 big figures, with the USDTRY hitting a record high of 6.3005, or up more than 11%, before holding below 6.0 for the bulk of the session.

As described earlier the collapse started around midnight EDT when the FT reported that the ECB Single Supervisory Mechanism warned that BBVA, UniCredit and BNP Paribas are particularly exposed to a TRY selloff, and even though it "does not see situation as critical yet", it warned that the risk is that Turkish borrowers may not be hedged against TRY weakness and begin to default on foreign- currency loans.

There is some hope that Turkish President Erdogan's speech at 12 p.m. London time will calm matters but his earlier ad hoc comments did not give much room for optimism. Speaking outside a mosque earlier today, Erdogan told followers “Don’t forget this: if they have got dollars, we have got our people, our right, our Allah."

Commenting on the statement, Bloomberg macro analyst Stephen Kirkland said that it signals he’s sticking to a nationalist message and is uninclined to deliver the hard measures Turkish assets need, which according to some analysts such as ADM's Marc Ostwald include a 500 bps rate hike and an IMF bailout. As a result, option markets are now pricing in a one-in-five chance of USD/TRY reaching 7 per dollar in a month, from about 1% probability yesterday.

For the Turkey watchers, here is today's key sequence of events, all times London:

  • 12.00BST: President Erdogan to speak
  • 12.30BST: Finance Minister Albayrak announces new economic model
  • 14.30BST: President Erdogan to speak again

And as fears of contagion mounted, the EURUSD tumbled to the lowest level in a year, running stops as it broke below the barrier level of 1.15...

... as the DXY spiked to YTD highs amid a broad flight to safety with the USD bid seen across all pairs. The scramble for safety meant that both USTs and bunds rallied however in a more contained manner and the 10Y bund yields were lower by ~3.5bps.

In equities, Europe's Stoxx Europe 600 Index dropped with European equity markets selling off steadily as banks underperformed with BBVA, UniCredit and BNP Paribas - the three banks named by the ECB - in focus as all three fall 3.5-4.0%. Mining stocks also weaker as Russia considers a new mining tax of $7.5b, which also weighed on metals across the board.

U.S. equity futures declined alongside shares from Asia to Europe. Asian equity markets were also mostly negative with sentiment subdued. The ASX 200 (-0.1%) and Nikkei 225 (-0.7%) were lower with Australia weighed by weakness in energy stocks, while Tokyo trade failed to benefit from stronger than expected GDP amid a firmer currency. Elsewhere, Shanghai Comp. (-0.1%) and Hang Seng (-0.4%) traded choppy amid a lack of fresh drivers and after the PBoC refrained from operations again for a neutral position for the week.

“We’re going to have the uncertainty about Erdogan and him speaking later today that I think is going to keep the market volatile,” said Peter Chatwell, head of European rates strategy at Mizuho International, in a Bloomberg Television interview. “But probably some of the market reaction we had first thing this morning could start to retrace a bit.”

As has been the case for much of 2018, geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and other countries had set the tone for markets this week, with the latest leg of the lira’s downward spiral triggered by a diplomatic row with America. Earlier in the week, China responded to the Trump administration’s latest trade war volley with additional tariffs of its own.

Elsewhere in FX, via BBG:

  • China’s yuan extended its drop, heading for the biggest fall in three weeks

Oil is still set for its 6th weekly loss as the crude complex is being hit by a rising USD, and risk aversion with both WTI and Brent down ~0.8% on the day, and Brent set for a near 2% and WTI looking at a near 3% fall for the week. In the metals complex, gold is down and straddling the USD 1210/oz level, as the rising dollar is hitting the gold market, which is looking at its 5th consecutive weekly fall. Copper has given up gains seen in early trade and is currently down 1.1% as an 11.3% fall in copper inventories seen by ShFE over the past week has not counteracted the USD hitting 13 month highs

Asian equity markets were mostly negative with sentiment subdued after a lacklustre lead from Wall St. where weakness in energy and financials dragged the DJIA and S&P 500, while the Nasdaq just about remained afloat to notch its 8th consecutive gain. ASX 200 (-0.3%) and Nikkei 225 (-1.3%) were lower with Australia weighed by weakness in energy stocks, while Tokyo trade failed to benefit from stronger than expected GDP amid a firmer currency. European equities have started the day negative (Euro Stoxx 50 -1.4%) as amid reports the ECB is expressing concerns of a weak TRY on European banks. BNP Paribas (-3.7%), BBVA (-3.3%) and UniCredit (-3.1%) are bringing up the rear of the Stoxx 600 on the back of high exposure to Turkish assets.

In FX, the highlight was the TRY with almost relentless selling early Friday, to the point of a full-on capital flight at one stage, saw the Lira collapse to new all time lows vs the Usd with vendors and price feeds quoting levels for the pair anywhere between 6.0000-50 in fast, if not frantic market conditions. However, some respite for the Try ahead of and after Turkish current account data that was slightly better than forecast in the event, but the focus now very much on speeches from President Erdogan (midday and 14.30BST), and more importantly the Finance Minister’s new economic model (12.30BST). Usd/Try back under 6.0000, but only just. DXY - The index is just off best levels, but riding high near fresh 2018 peaks around 96.182 and still over the big figure amidst widespread Dollar gains, bar vs the safest of safe-haven currencies, Jpy as the aforementioned Lira and EM meltdown spills over to majors. Technically, 96.512 is next on the radar, assuming no intervention to stop the rout and/or a major upset for the Greenback independently (weak CPI data?). JPY - As noted, the exception to the rule, as Usd/Jpy trades mostly below 111.00 on risk-off positioning and the Jpy is also boosted by stronger than forecast Japanese GDP data overnight. Chart-wise, 110.53 represents nearest support and bids/stops are likely situated around 110.50.

In commodities, oil is set for its 6th weekly loss as the crude complex is being hit by a rising USD, and risk aversion with both WTI and Brent down ~0.8% on the day, and Brent set for a near 2% and WTI looking at a near 3% fall for the week. Aluminium is also down 0.5% on the day. IEA raise their 2018 oil demand growth forecast by 110k BPD to 1.49mln BPD, and see risks to 2019 oil demand growth from trade disputes and rising prices if supply is constrained.

Looking at the day ahead, the highlight is likely to be the July CPI report in the US. Prior to that we get the preliminary Q2 GDP reports in the UK. DB's Jim Reid concludes the overnight wrap

Markets are undoubtedly quiet at the moment but there are some big moves still in Turkey and Russia that are preventing everyone from enjoying the summer. Firstly the S&P 500 closed -0.14% after a dip in the last 15 minutes before the bell but the index again traded in a fairly narrow 0.37% range for the day - the 8th lowest this year. Meanwhile the Turkish Lira dropped -5.15% to a fresh record low (YTD -46.2%) and the 13th worst day since 2000. Ankara’s jailing of the America pastor and the associated diplomatic row continues to hurt the country’s assets. Not even the Turkish Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak’s office saying that the government would curb sovereign borrowing by reducing the GDP growth target to under 4% from 5.5% had an impact beyond a brief and small intra-daytick up in the Lira. President Erdogan speaks today at 2pm local time so it’ll be interesting to see if anything important comes from that. Meanwhile the Russian Ruble fell -1.72% (YTD -15.7%) to the lowest since April 2016 as the prior night’s US sanctions continued to dampen sentiment. Countries that are in a diplomatic battle with the US at the moment (e.g. China, Turkey and Russia) seems to be suffering in the markets.

The main highlight today is US CPI. DB expects core inflation (0.23% month-over-month) to rebound in July after a few softer monthly prints. According to our team, over the past three months, core CPI has risen at an annualized rate of only 1.74%, well below the year-over-year and 6-month annualized rates which are both near 2.3%. Their forecast is supported by recent firmer readings for alternative inflation gauges and expectations for a rebound in a few categories that have been unusually soft in recent months. A print in line with DB’s forecast would lift the YoY rate for core CPI inflation to 2.32%, which would support the long-standing house call for two more rate hikes this year.

Ahead of this, this morning in Asia, markets are retreating modestly with China’s CSI 300 broadly flat (+0.02%) while the Hang Seng (-0.45%), Nikkei (-0.72%) and Kospi (-0.66%) are all down as we type. Meanwhile futures on the S&P are pointing to a softer start while the Chinese Yuan is resuming its decline (-0.2%). Datawise, the rebound in Japan’s Q2 GDP was stronger than expected at 0.5% qoq (vs. 0.3% expected), leading to an annualised growth of 1.9%. Back to other markets performance from yesterday. In the US, the Nasdaq edged up for the 8th straight day (+0.04%), closing in on matching its prior winning streak of 9 days in late September 17. Meanwhile Tesla fell for the second day (-4.83%) and was down -9.0% from its intraday high a few days back, in part as investors scrutinised the potential to take the company back to private ownership.

Notably, Tesla rose c2% in after hour trading though after CNBC reported that its Board of Directors plans to meet with financial advisers next week to explore taking the company private, although Reuters cited unnamed sources which noted the board has not yet received a detailed financial plan from CEO Musk. So one to watch.

In Europe, the Stoxx 600 reversed earlier losses to close +0.09% as consumers stocks benefited from better than expected results from Adidas (+8.6%) and Cineworld (+10.7%). Across the region, the DAX (+0.34%) and CAC  (+0.01%) nudged higher while the FTSE (-0.45%) gave back some of its gains from the prior day. Over in government bonds, core 10y yields were around 2bp lower (Bunds -2.3bp; Gilts -1.9bp) while treasuries outperformed (-3.4bp), in part following a weaker than expected PPI print (more below). Turning to currencies, the US dollar index firmed 0.43% to a fresh 13 month high while the Euro and Sterling fell -0.71% and -0.45% respectively. In commodities, WTI oil softened further (-0.19%) while precious metals were little changed (Gold -0.12%; Silver +0.11%).

In other news, Business Insider reported that some member states in the EU are ready to allow UK to remain in the single market for goods while opting out of the free movement of people if UK agrees to replicate all environmental, social, and customs rules in addition to those set out in her so-called Chequers proposals. The potential trade-off will apparently be discussed at a special meeting of all 28 leaders in Salzburg next month. It doesn’t seem likely that the EU would be this generous at this stage and after a brief spike GBP largely ignored the story and closed -0.45% and -0.27% lower against the USD and EUR.

Finally turning to the latest central bankers speak. The Fed’s Evans, one of the more dovish Fed members seems to be shifting his tone as he noted that “it would not surprise me…if we make a judgement to move to a somewhat restrictive setting” on rates, which he believes could be roughly 50bp above his 2.75% estimate of neutral rates. Nearer term, he believes “it could be one or two more” rate hikes for the year. Meanwhile he pointed to the economy’s “extremely  strong” performance and he thinks “inflation expectations are going to catch up”. Back in the UK, the outgoing BoE policy maker McCafferty told the Guardian that wage growth might “creep up towards 4 percent-ish” in 2019, in part driven by a labour shortage and he sees “another couple” of rate hikes in the next 18 months to two years.

Before we take a look at today’s calendar, we wrap up with other data releases from yesterday. In the US, the July core PPI (ex food & energy) was 0.1ppt below expectations, coming in at 0.1% mom and 2.7% yoy. The weakness was in   part due to the decline in wholesale prices for apparel (-4.4% mom) and furnishings (-3.2% mom). Meanwhile, our US economists noted the healthcare component – used as an input in the core PCE deflator, was up just +0.03% in July leaving its annual growth rate steady at 1.7% yoy. Elsewhere the final reading for the June wholesale inventories was revised one-tenth higher to 0.1% mom. The weekly initial jobless (213k vs. 220k expected) and continuing claims (1,755k vs. 1,730k expected) remain near historic low levels and continue to reflect robust labour market conditions. Back in the UK, the June RICS housing survey reported that a net 4% of surveyors had seen house price increases over the past three months – up slightly from the June survey.

Looking at the day ahead, the highlight is likely to be the July CPI report in the US. Prior to that we get the preliminary Q2 GDP reports in the UK. June industrial production data is also due out in France and the UK as well as June trade data in the latter. In the evening we'll also get the July monthly budget statement in the US. Gazprom will report earnings.

Trump is pushing the military to get ready to fight in space, but the US Army is worried about fighting underground      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Space military

  • The Trump administration wants to move ahead with its plans to create a Space Force.
  • The ultimate structure of that force, and what it will do, remains unclear.
  • Elsewhere in the Pentagon, military planners are focused on another facet of warfare that's much closer to home.

The Trump administration wants to have a force ready to fight in the heavens by 2020, but the US Army is already spending a half-billion dollars to prepare for fighting underground.

In a speech at the Pentagon on Thursday, Vice President Mike Pence described a US Space Force as "an idea whose time as come."

"Our Administration will soon take action to implement these recommendations with the objective of establishing the United States Department of the Space Force by 2020," Pence added.

Critics have said a new Space Force is unnecessary, while an argument for it is that rival powers like Russia and China are growing more able to strike at US assets in space and at US assets from space, missions whose importance necessitate its own dedicated command and even military force.

Mike Pence

The ultimate structure of the Space Force remains unclear, as does what its responsibilities and resources will be.

Elsewhere in the Pentagon, however, officials are looking in the opposite direction to prepare for the future of warfare.

US Army leaders have said that next war will be fought in mega-cities, and the service has started an effort to train troops to fight not just in but also beneath those environments.

An accelerated effort started in late 2017 will devote about $572 million to train and outfit 26 of the Army's 31 active combat brigades for operations in large-scale subterranean facilities, according to a Military.com report in June.

Teams have been activated to train leaders from each of those brigades to operate in large-scale underground facilities. As of June, five BCTs had been trained, and the trainers had a January deadline to finish training the other 21.

US Army soldiers subterranean tunnel air assault

Underground combat will require Army infantry to navigate, communicate, overcome heavy obstacles, and engage enemy forces in facilities that range in size and complexity from relatively small corridors to sprawling subterranean compounds.

"We did recognize, in a megacity that has underground facilities — sewers and subways and some of the things we would encounter ... we have to look at ourselves and say 'OK, how does our current set of equipment and our tactics stack up?'" Col. Townley Hedrick, commandant of the infantry school at the Army's Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, Georgia, told Military.com.

"What are the aspects of megacities that we have paid the least attention to lately?" Hedrick said. "And every megacity has got sewers and subways and stuff that you can encounter, so let's brush it up a little bit."

The Army's Asymmetric Warfare Group, which is often asked to assess future threats, has been tasked with developing a training course for underground fighting, relying on modular facilities to simulate such combat.

A portion of the money assigned to the effort will go to acquiring specialized equipment, like radios, breathing systems, or night-vision goggles. An Army source told Military.com that the tactics and techniques of underground fighting are similar to those used to clear buildings, with complicating factors like a lack of light or air.

ISIS tunnel

Underground warfare is nothing new. Special units of US troops, usually engineers, were tasked with exploring tunnels found during the Vietnam War. More recently, US and partner forces have dealt with ISIS fighters operating in underground tunnels in Iraq and Syria.

Villages around Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city, were found to have extensive tunnel networks that were likely used as meeting places and escape routes. In early 2017, the US used its largest nonnuclear bomb, nicknamed the "Mother of All Bombs" against what was said to be a complex of tunnels and caves used by ISIS.

Prior to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, dealing with underground structures was largely the responsibility of special-operations units like the Army's Delta Force or Rangers or the Navy's SEAL Team Six.

But Army researchers have said that special-operations forces alone will not be able to deal with the scale of underground combat in a future conflict with a peer or near-peer adversary. One Army source told Military.com that an estimate made in 2017 found about 10,000 large-scale military facilities that could serve as underground cities.

US Army soldiers subterranean tunnel

More than 4,800 of those underground facilities are in North Korea, which has used such subterranean structures to house nuclear-weapons facilities and, in case of war, could use them to funnel thousands of troops into South Korea.

Moscow and other major Russian cities are replete with undergound bunkers, tunnels, subway lines, and other facilities, many of which were built during the Cold War.

China, home to dozens of densely populated cities, has a vast network of tunnels and underground facilities used to house its missiles and nuclear arsenal. Iran, too, has used underground complexes for its nuclear program.

"I think that modern warfare and modern combat, [it will] occur mainly in urban areas, and urban areas are a place that tunnels and underground facilities can be used, mainly by asymmetric opponents, as something that changes the equation," Brig. Gen. Nechemya Sokal, chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces IDF Technology and Logistics Branch, said on the Modern War Institute podcast in early 2017.

Sokal said that Hamas' use of tunnels for variety of operations, including infiltrating Israeli territory, created a number of challenges that required new technology and different tactics to address.

"We have to change our doctrine and the way we do things, because underground facilities are not so intuitive as buildings and places we are using to being," Sokal said.

Europe forecast: Gales northern Europe - Thunderstorms east, Aug 10 - 05:43      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Friday A powerful area of low pressure sweeps across northern Europe early today, bringing damaging gale force winds to North Sea coasts of the Low Countries, northern Germany and Denmark. Strong winds will sweep into southern Sweden and the Baltic through the day. Heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms will move north across Scandinavia. A cold front passes east into central-eastern Europe, triggering thundery downpours and squally winds for Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Further thunderstorms are also likely for the Alps. A few showers will affect northern France and the Low Countries during the day, but much of France and Germany will be dry with sunshine, and fresher than recently at 23 to 26C. Plenty of sunshine across the Mediterranean, and also eastern Europe. Temperatures around 35C for the Balkans and Hungary, also hot for Italy and Greece. Dry for most of Spain and Portugal, not as hot as recently, but still up to 34 to 38C in the south-west. Local thunderstorms for the eastern Costas and Balearics.

Saturday High pressure and fairly fresh conditions influences France, the Low Countries and Germany. Unsettled for Scandinavia, with low pressure across the far north bringing wind and rain to northern Norway and Sweden. Showery for southern Scandinavia, but largely dry in Finland. Clusters of thunderstorms affect Poland, western Ukraine and Slovkia. Areas toward the Black Sea remain hot and dry, with fair weather also across Greece and the Aegean Sea, temperatures topping 30C. A few showers for the Austrian Alps, but drier further west into Switzerland. One or two zones of thunderstorms for south-east Spain, also southern Italy, otherwise the Mediterranean stays hot and dry. Temperatures nudging back toward 40C in Portugal and the south-west of Spain.

Major roadworks in southwest Iceland      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Around 60 staff are currently hard at work laying 15,000 tonnes of asphalt along a 40 kilometre stretch of Iceland’s Route 1 highway in southwest Iceland. There are some travel delays as a result. Areas affected include Hellisheiði pass, Sandskeiði, and Kambar—all along the route between Hveragerði and Reykjavík.  The roadworks are the single biggest resurfacing project undertaken by Vegagerðin this year and will cost approximately half a billion krónur.  Vegagerðin (The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration) has been waiting all summer for good enough weather to start the resurfacing from Sandskeiði and east towards Hellisheiði. With the current period of dry and mild weather, the works have started in earnest.  “This is our biggest maintenance project this summer,” says Vegagerðin engineer Birkir Hrafn Jóakimsson. “Now we are surfacing Sandskeiði which is just the beginning of a larger resurfacing project over Hellisheiði that we plan to complete next week to the east of Kambar, near Hveragerði.”  Had the road surface really become that bad here?   “Yes. It had got really bad, as travellers had doubtless noticed. This asphalt had broken up a lot and there were pretty poor conditions on the pass.”  Birkir says the poor condition of the road can largely be blamed on the widespread cutbacks after the financial crisis a decade ago; adding that good quality asphalt is now finally being laid. “I believe it is the best asphalt available in Iceland. We are very picky about the gravel. So demanding, in fact, that we need to import this material from Norway. And this is the same material used for resurfacing in Norway, Denmark, and elsewhere.”  Over the coming days, workers will move steadily over the Hellisheiði mountain pass, which will suffer periodic road closures during which diversions will be in place, sending travellers along the Þrengsli route. Signposts will direct those unfamiliar with the area.   “We would really like drivers to respect the closures and signage and the staff working on the road,” Birkir adds.

I don't buy it. Very few foreigners working in Norway, unless you are a cousin fro another Scandinavian country. It's a corrupt, inbred university system.

I work in a Norwegian department. Plenty of foreigners here. Starting salary here is around 600k nok for a starting AP (or more in Finance and for some positions). Cost of living is high but we travel and shop abroad quite a bit. This implies pay is pretty good for Europe.
You will want to look at the tenure record of foreigners at the Department (not school) level to see your tenure chances. Some departments in our school seem very corrupt and never tenure non-Scandis even those with very good pubs. Others tenure almost all APs with a decent track record independent of nationality.

100 under-the-radar islands everyone should visit in their lifetime      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Lofoten Islands in Norway Shutterstock

From sandy beaches to crystal clear waters, you may think you've seen it all when it comes to island life, even if just from photos.

But it turns out there are plenty more unique and stunning islands in the world left to discover — and many of them fly under the radar despite their spectacular beauty.

INSIDER asked some of the most influential travel bloggers and experts from the likes of HotelTonight, Secret Escapes, Topdeck Travel, and TravelSupermarket for the most breathtaking and memorable lesser-known islands they've ever visited.

Frequent travellers in our own office also contributed, and some tips were taken from digital journalists and TripAdvisor users.

From a secret, sparkling spot in Sicily to a car-free Mexican retreat, scroll down for a list of 100 under-the-radar islands everyone should visit in their lifetime.

Reunion Island.

HomeToGo

"Reunion Island is a French Island territory located in the Indian Ocean, and is a fantastic alternative to the popular Maldives," according to holiday rental site HomeToGo.

"Surrounded by beautiful beaches, the island also hosts lush tropical rainforests and is the perfect destination for nature lovers. Reunion Island is a photographer's paradise with many impressive trails for trekking, glorious volcanoes, and turquoise blue waters. Perfect to practice your rusty French skills, the friendly local population makes the experience all the more enjoyable."

Michel Karam, CEO of müvTravel, called Reunion Island "one of the most unusual island paradises on the planet."

"The island is known for its volcanic, rain-forested interior, coral reefs and beaches," he added.

Egadi Islands, Italy.

HomeToGo

These islands are an Italian secret, according to HomeToGo — at least until now.

"The Egadi Islands are three islands off the western coast of Sicily. Our data shows that this island is almost exclusively visited by Italians, although it includes all the features that make holidays perfect: beautiful beaches, sun, great food and fantastic wines.

"If you don't want to travel to all three different islands, we recommend you stay in Marettimo. Although it is the hardest island to reach, it offers outstanding snorkeling and is the least touristy island of the Egadi Islands."

Curaçao.

HomeToGo

Curaçao combines the best vibes of the Caribbean and Europe, according to HomeToGo.

"On this Dutch island, you will find gorgeous beaches and beautiful European inspired architecture," a spokesperson said. "One of the most colorful parts of the island is the Pietermaai District. This vibrant neighbourhood has emerged as a trendy spot for bars and restaurants and is a must when visiting the island."

According to HomeToGo, summer (June — August) is the best time to visit Curaçao for those hoping for a deal.

Comment on Why are Australians so afraid of My Health Record? by Helena Ravenclaw      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
I moved interstate and changed my name so that my unstable, potentially violent ex boyfriend couldn’t find me. I know so many women who would be justifiably horrified if it was possible for all the men they had met socially or worked with in their life - sleazy bosses, obsessive acquaintances - to readily find their home address and and personal details. Perhaps Norway doesn’t have these problems - but if so, Norwegians are very lucky.

(Need a 99% solution not 95%) I might have gotten an eGolf had they still been on the market, tho not having an electric-friendly VW dealer within 150 miles is not attractive. Kona and Niro EVs might have the same problem here, no EV dealer outside of Bay Area and LA. Leaf Plus will certainly be in-town and I'll kick myself if they have a decent supply of 60kWh cars and are willing to come down from MSRP at all. 6% interest comes from a bank preferred issue I like.           Scandinavian farmers hit by drought      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Like the whole of Northern Europe, Scandinavia is suffering from drought, and many farmers are now using their hay stored for the coming winter to feed their animals. That way they hope to avoid slaughtering them early, which would mean further financial losses. "It makes no sense to spread seeds on concrete and then expect anything to come from that," said Denmark's Minister for Environment and Food, Jakob Ellemann-Jensen . "So, we need to wait for the rain, a thing we have no control over no matter how much we kick and scream." Hay is traded like gold, supplies are thin on the ground. Swedes and Danes are buying at exorbitant prices. Norway even imports from Iceland. Over the next three months, around 35,000 tons will be brought in. A lot of rain has led to overproduction in Iceland, allowing it to export the excess to the dry Scandinavian countries. The transport costs are high and there is also the risk of introducing pathogens or weeds with the hay. An expensive interim solution for Norway, because Brussels does not intervene in Norwegian agriculture as it does with full EU members. It has been the driest summer in over 70 years, prompting Norway to remove any import duties on hay.

Long-term development of natural regeneration in irregular, mixed stands of silver fir and Norway spruce      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Abstract

The timely establishment of natural regeneration of the preferred species after the death or removal of mature trees is essential in continuous-cover forestry. In the context of the gradual shift from even-aged and monospecific to uneven-aged and/or mixed forest stands, the limited availability of statistical models to predict seedling establishment, survival, and growth has increasingly become a bottleneck for forest management planning and, ultimately, a potential limitation to a wider adoption of alternative silvicultural approaches.

We investigated the development of top height and density of natural regeneration in 19 uneven-structured, mixed silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.) stands in southwestern Germany using long-term observations (35 years) from permanent plots. We used linear mixed-effects models to analyze the influence of overstory and understory-related variables on regeneration of fir and spruce.

The height of the five tallest juvenile trees per regeneration subplot and species increased significantly with diminishing canopy cover and increasing structural diversity of the overstory. However, competition exerted by tall juveniles substantially impacted the development of smaller neighbors, which were less able to profit from favorable overstory conditions. These results indicate that canopy cover and structural diversity need to be taken into account when modeling height development of juvenile trees in irregular stands. Importantly, these results also demonstrate the potential of silvicultural interventions to shorten the time period when terminal shoots are vulnerable to browsing.

Densities of juvenile trees displayed a unimodal relationship with the mean height of the regeneration. Fir and spruce densities culminated at a mean height of approx. 50 cm and decreased rapidly afterwards. This pattern indicates an early onset of competition within the regeneration layer. For both species, juvenile densities were unrelated to overstory structural diversity, yet they showed positive relationships with overstory density and site productivity.

Overall, fir juveniles developed faster in height than spruce juveniles. Even rather rapid group-shelterwood cutting regimes with complete canopy removal within two decades still favored fir regeneration. In addition, a high proportion of fir in the regeneration cohort had a stronger negative effect on spruce juvenile density than vice versa. Since spruce is less shade-tolerant than fir, it is likely that fir will dominate the future stand composition.

Overall, our models provide the basis to predict natural regeneration dynamics in structurally complex stands dominated by fir and spruce and to further evaluate alternative treatment scenarios.

New York All-Stars (featuring Eric Alexander and Harold Mabern) – Burnin’ In London
(Ubuntu UBU0012. CD review by Mark McKergow)

This hard-hitting quartet led by tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander and piano master Harold Mabern produce a full-throttle set of virtuosic mainstream jazz recorded live at London’s Pizza Express club in November 2017.

Eric Alexander is a frequent visitor to these shores from America, sometimes in tandem with British musicians such as Dave O’Higgins. A prolific recording artist, he has worked for many years with pianist Harold Mabern, a genuine legend in his own right (anyone referenced alongside Duke Ellington and Jay McShann in Ben Sidran’s superb tribute song Piano Players must be worth a listen!). Lately they have teamed up with French-domiciled American bassist Darryl Hall and Austrian drummer Bernd Reiter as the New York All-Stars. This CD emerged from a conversation while the band were playing a short residency in London – a chat one night became a recording the next!

As we might expect, this is very much a live performance from a ring-ready band whose chops are clearly well-exercised and who have found a groove together. Alexander leads into the opening Almost Like Being In Love at tremendous pace, with Mabern providing a full backing style with a fair amount of sustain pedal evident. I Could Have Danced All Night is tackled at an even faster tempo,  with interestingly ambiguous rhythmic shifts which have the listener reaching for support and Alexander’s tenor sax gaining fluency and clarity though the performance.

Mabern leads into his own Nightlife In Tokyo with a nice piano introduction before the straight-eights tune and bass ostinato arrives. Hall and Reiter provide solid backing here as elsewhere, and Mabern takes the chance to introduce an extended quote from Steely Dan’s Do It Again using his ten-fingered full-on style. With six tracks of around 10 minutes apiece, there is space to stretch out and Hall gets a nicely-judged solo here. It’s Magic provides a welcome breather as the band moves into ballad territory with Mabern again quoting liberally from a range of sources including a classically-rooted coda with Alexander.

This is a lively collection of witty and high octane jazz recorded live by practitioners at the top of their craft.

You can hear them for yourself on their forthcoming European tour including September dates at Manchester’s Band On The Wall and the Guildhall School, and three nights' return to the Pizza Express in Soho (17-19 September 2018) as well as shows in Italy, Germany, Norway, Austria, Switzerland and France.

A film by Manuel Stagars http://www.blockchain-documentary.com For more interviews about the brave new world of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies, see Manuel's podcast: http://www.theblockchainandus.com. In 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto invented bitcoin and the blockchain. For the first time in history, his invention made it possible to send money around the globe without banks, governments or any other intermediaries. The concept of the blockchain isn’t very intuitive. But still, many people believe it is a game changer. Economist and filmmaker Manuel Stagars portrays this exciting technology in interviews with software developers, cryptologists, researchers, entrepreneurs, consultants, VCs, authors, politicians, and futurists from the United States, Canada, Switzerland, the UK, and Australia. The Blockchain and Us is no explainer video of the technology. It gives a view on the topic, makes it accessible and starts a conversation about its potential wider implications in a non-technical way. The film deliberately poses more questions than it answers.           Norway to give free heroin to 400 addicts.      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Norway's government is to start providing free heroin to up to 400 hardened addicts as it pushes forward with its drug policy reforms. "We want to help those addicted who are difficult to reach, those who are not part of LAR (drug-assisted rehabilitation) and who are difficult to treat," he told the newspaper. "Addicts should be met with health care and respect, not with punishment and condemnation," Hoie said in March when he appointed a new high-level committee to draw up the details of the new policy. "We are now moving away from what might be described as a moralistic approach in the previous thinking," he told the Verdens Gang newspaper at the time. "We fully recognize that some are not motivated to become drug-free. This group will now get a much better offer than before." According to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, Norway has one of the highest fatal overdose rates in Europe, with 80 per million people in 2015, putting it below only Estonia and neighbouring Sweden. But this is already an improvment on the year 2001, when the country's overdose rate was close to 140 per million, almost double the rate in Estonia, then still the country with the second highest rate.

Climate becomes major Swedish election issue after wildfiresSweden's wildfires and drought have caused the environment to become the second most important issue after immigration for Swedes before the September 9 general election, a poll showed Thursday. The heatwave and drought triggered dozens of wildfires, from the south up to the Arctic Circle as the country registered the hottest month of July in two centuries, with temperatures hovering around 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit). The Nordic nation, where summer temperatures are usually closer to 23 Celsius, is not equipped to deal with this kind of natural catastrophe and asked for help from Italy, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Poland and France.

South Africans are helping Australia become one of the richest countries in the world      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

After several years of strong growth, Australia is now arguably the world’s leading economy, according to a new report from AfrAsia Bank and New World Wealth.
According to the researchers, Australia currently has the fifth highest count of wealth per capita, behind ‘small’ financial hubs like Monaco and Switzerland. Wealth in this case refers to the net assets of a person. It includes all their assets (property, cash, equities, business interests) less any liabilities.
Wealth per person in US$ (wealth per capita)
  • Monaco: $2,087,400
  • Liechtenstein: $761,100
  • Luxembourg: $368,000
  • Switzerland: $354,000
  • Australia: $279,200
  • Norway: $228,000
  • Singapore: $194,500
  • United States: $193,400
  • Canada: $185,300
  • New Zealand: $173,700
The researchers said that the argument could be made that Australia is actually top of the pile, if the smaller financial hubs like Monaco, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and Switzerland are excluded.
While Australia’s rise in wealth may be a result of many factors, one of the stand-out reasons for Australia’s climb in per capita wealth is the consistent migration of high net-worth individuals being drawn into the country – including many wealthy South Africans.
According to NWW, Australia has attracted more millionaires than any other country over the past few years, which shows that many wealthy people feel that it is the best long-term prospect.
These are the biggest drivers of wealth in the country:
  • It has consistently been the fastest growing first world market over the past 20 years (in terms of economic growth, wealth growth, income growth and property price growth).
  • Low population density – only 25 million people and large land area.
  • Mineral rich.
  • It is very safe, which encourages wealth growth. Australia was recently rated by New World Wealth as one of the five safest countries for woman worldwide (along with Iceland, Malta, New Zealand and Canada).
  • High and rising real estate prices, especially on the East Coast.
  • Consistent HNWI migration to the country over the past 20 years.
  • Location – it benefits from strong business ties with emerging Asian giants such as China, Japan and Korea.
Migrating wealth
According to a recent Sydney Morning Herald articleAustralia has brought in billions of dollars in investment by attracting millionaires through its Significant Investor visa (SIV) programme.
Data supplied to BusinessTech by Australia’s Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) showed that these investments equated to around AUD$9.8 billion over the 1 July 2017 – 31 March 2018 period.
One of the key requirements of the SIV, is that holders are required to invest AUD$5 million (R50 million) into complying significant investments for a minimum of four years before being eligible to apply for a permanent visa.
Over the period, 1,974 SIV visas were granted – of which, about 26 South Africans were accepted.
While Australia’s SIV is one of the more expensive ways of leaving the country, data provided to BusinessTech shows that a much higher amount of South Africans are emigrating to Australia through other visa options.
The data focuses on the ‘permanent additions’ to Australia’s resident population in the 2016-2017 financial year.
This includes the number of people who have obtained a permanent visa onshore, the number of settler arrivals during a given time period, and the number of people who have been granted a permanent protection visa onshore.
Combined this added to a total of 5,397 South Africans over this time period. The skill stream is by far the most popular way for South Africans to move to the country, with a total of 4,419 South African applicants on this visa type.
By comparison a total of 672 applicants were on the family stream and 288 on ‘non-programme migration’.

DIEAP Flap Patients Equally as Satisfied with the Abdomen as Abdominoplasty Patients      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Background: The dermolipectomy of the deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEAP) flap procedure is designed to give an end result as seen with abdominoplasty (AP). Several steps of an AP are, however, not routinely performed. This study compared the patient-reported outcomes between these 2 procedures with an emphasis on the abdomen. Methods: Thirty-four patients reconstructed with a DIEAP flap (DIEAP group), and 30 patients with an AP (AP group) were asked to complete 2 study-specific questionnaires. The first questionnaire covered abdominal outcomes, whereas the second was concerned with general outcomes. Results: The DIEAP group was significantly older compared with the AP group. Eighty-five percentage of the DIEAP group and 66 % of the AP group answered the questionnaires. Postoperatively, the DIEAP group was significantly more satisfied with their bodies when dressed (P = 0.009), and there was a trend of DIEAP patients being more satisfied with the appearance of the abdomen (P = 0.085). No significant difference was found comparing outcomes concerning umbilicus, muscle function, pain, scarring, and contour. The DIEAP group was more worried about their health than the AP group postoperatively (P = 0.044). AP patients had a significantly more altered body image (P = 0.016) and increased sexual desire (P = 0.003) than DIEAP patients. There was no significant difference regarding changes in self-image, social relationships, being naked with partner, and overall satisfaction. Conclusion: DIEAP flap patients were equally as satisfied with the abdomen as AP patients.           Press Releases: Troika Statement on South Sudan Peace Talks      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Media Note
Office of the Spokesperson
Washington, DC
August 10, 2018

The text of the following statement was issued jointly by the Governments of the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and Norway.

The members of the Troika (the United States, the United Kingdom, and Norway) support the engagement of the region in the recent Khartoum-based negotiations on outstanding governance and security issues. We acknowledge the role of Sudan in hosting these negotiations. Considerable challenges lie ahead, and we are concerned that the arrangements agreed to date are not realistic or sustainable. Given their past leadership failures, South Sudanese leaders will need to behave differently and demonstrate commitment to peace and good governance.

Above all, we support the people of South Sudan’s aspirations to lead lives unburdened by fear, and to experience peace, pluralism, and prosperity. We remain steadfast that the best hope for sustainable peace is a process inclusive of ordinary men and women, civil society, religious leaders, ethnic minorities, and other excluded groups. We urge mediators to ensure the open and free participation of these groups and other participants in the negotiations, to ensure their interests are fully protected. Moreover, the process should culminate in free, fair, and credible elections, and allow for a peaceful transition in leadership in the most expeditious and responsible manner.

During the next stage of the talks, parties must bring in a wider range of stakeholders, and develop clear plans for the transition period, including how resources will be used in a transparent and accountable way for the benefit of all South Sudanese. Critical questions remain, such as how security will be provided in Juba during the transition period and how meaningful checks will be placed on executive power.

We call on the parties to develop clear and realistic governance and security timelines and plans for the transition period, and on the Intergovernmental Authority on Development member states and the AU to continue and intensify their involvement in the implementation phase of any agreement.

We note that there has been some reduction in fighting, the most serious confidence-building measure of all. Sustained peace is a necessary condition for the legitimacy of a transitional arrangement. In furtherance of this, we call on our regional partners to uphold the United Nations Security Council arms embargo and on their financial institutions to ensure that the proceeds from corrupt and war-making activities do not flow through their jurisdictions. We now expect to see a change in the situation on the ground, beginning with a further significant reduction in violence, and all parties taking measures to allow full humanitarian access.

GREAT!! I'm glad Isharell pulled this national identity bvllshit. Now they can shut the fvck up about Hitler. But they won't. Of course, when he was a little miffed at all the AskeNAZIs speaking YIDDISH, not assimilating he wanted to make his nation point them out. What's the difference again?!? If it wasn't for their own traditional apparel, Satanyahoo and his ilk would have all the non-Jude wear some kind of identification too. Sieg Heil Satanyahoo. Look at the caricature of Satanyahoo at the top of this article. Doesn't he looked posed in a SWASTIKA position? Looks like that to me. LMGAO. Like they always say: What's good for the goose-step, is good for the gerrymander.

This (translated) article, according to what I can tell, ought to have capitalized the name of the population group in question; i.e. with an upper case D instead of a lower case d. I mention this, because, at least to me, reading the article was a bit confusing at first. According to Merriam-Webster, correct American usage is Druze or Druse /ˈdrüz/ n, pl Druze or Druzes or Druse or Druses often attrib [Ar Durūz, pl., fr. Muḥammad ibn-Isma'īl al-Darazī †1019 Muslim religious leader] (1855): a member of a religious sect originating among Muslims and centered in Lebanon and Syria.

Here Are 4 People Who Join Omarosa in Alleging That Donald Trump Made Racist Remarks on 'The Apprentice'      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
The president faces a slew of allegations about horrifying racist language.

In her soon-to-be-released book “Unhinged,” Omarosa Manigault Newman speaks candidly about her former boss, President Donald Trump—alleging that claims he used racial slurs when he was on the hit reality show “The Apprentice” are absolutely true. Newman has asserted that although she never heard Trump use the n-word herself, she knows for a fact that “Apprentice” tapes of him using it “multiple times” exist. According to Newman, “three sources in three separate conversations” alleged that during his years on “The Apprentice,” Trump “hadn’t just dropped a single n-word bomb. He’d said it multiple times throughout the show’s taping during off-camera outtakes, particularly during the first season of ‘The Apprentice.’” And Newman is not alone in alleging that Trump wasn’t shy about making racist remarks during his years on “The Apprentice,” which debuted in 2004.

Here are four others who allege that Trump said racist things during his years on “The Apprentice.”

1. Bill Pruitt

Bill Pruitt, who worked on the first two seasons of “The Apprentice,” has alleged that Trump made bigoted comments about “African-Americans, Jewish people, all of the above” when he was on “The Apprentice.” In 2016, when Trump was campaigning for president and the infamous “Access Hollywood” recording from 2015 surfaced, he was criticized for his sexist “grab them by the pussy” comments. But according to Pruitt, Trump’s “Access Hollywood” comments pale in comparison to things he said on “The Apprentice”—and on October 8, 2016, Pruitt tweeted that as the producer of “The Apprentice’s” first two seasons, “I assure you: when it comes to the #trumptapes there are far worse.” For legal reasons, however, Pruitt could not be any more specific.

2. Chris Nee

In 2016, screenwriter/producer Chris Nee tweeted that when she was working on “The Apprentice,” head producer Mark Burnett had her sign a contract stating that she would have to pay $5 million if she ever released footage of the show without Burnett’s permission. And according to Nee, that footage included Trump using the n-word to describe blacks. In 2016, Nee addressed the “far worse” that Pruitt was referring to, tweeting, “Hearing from producers/crew N word is the ‘much worse.’”

3. Tom Arnold

Actor Tom Arnold has alleged that he has outtakes of Trump using racial slurs when he was on “The Apprentice.” Interviewed by KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson in 2016, Arnold alleged that when Trump used those slurs during his “Apprentice” days, “He wasn’t going to be president of the United States. It was him sitting in that chair saying the n-word, saying the c-word, calling his son a retard, just being so mean to his own children.” And according to Arnold, Trump said “every bad thing ever, every offensive, racist thing ever” in the outtakes.

4. Randal D. Pinkett

After President Trump described Haiti, El Salvador and some countries in Africa as “shithole countries” and said he would much prefer to have immigrants from Norway instead, Randal D. Pinkett—one of the African-American stars of “The Apprentice”—said of Trump, “There’s no question in my mind: he’s a racist.” And Pinkett felt that way when he was on “The Apprentice” in the mid-2000s. In 2016, the Hollywood Report quoted Pinkett as saying, “After Donald declared me the winner and said, ‘Randal, you’re hired,’ he asked me a question that he had never asked any contestant prior and never asked of any contestant after me. He asked me if I wanted to share a title with the white runner-up. The better question is: why did Donald ask me to share? And my only answer is that he did not want to have an African-American have a clear, clean, full victory.”
