ADESA Des Moines Hosts Driver Training for Teens      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
ADESA Des Moines hosted a Ford Driving Skills for Life (Ford DSFL) training program that gave young adults the opportunity to learn advanced driving skills in a controlled environment. In four educational and engaging sessions held over two days, hundreds of teens learned four critical driving skills—hazard recognition, vehicle handling, speed management and space management. Children of ADESA Des Moines employees and customers were also part of a session. In one course, instructors taught the drivers techniques for regaining control of a sliding car, as if on snow or ice. Teens also got to experience distracted and impaired driving simulators, to help them realize the dangers of being on the road while unfocused or under the influence. ADESA Des Moines first served as a host for the Ford DSFL in 2015. This year, the auction was the last of four stops on a summer tour that also included Louisville, Cleveland and Chicago. The Ford DSFL was established in 2003 by Ford Motor Company Fund, the Governors Highway Safety Association and a panel of safety experts to teach newly licensed teens the necessary skills for safe driving, beyond what they learn in standard driver education programs. Studies show that crash rates […]
Heavy Rotation: 10 Songs Public Radio Can't Stop Playing      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Each month, we ask 10 DJs and music directors from public radio stations around the country to tell us about the songs they keep playing. This month's mix features several collaborations between well-known artists and up-and-coming stars.

Otis Jr. and a band of Louisville all-stars (including members of My Morning Jacket, Wax Fang and Twin Limb) cover a Willie Dixon classic. Johnny Marr, formerly of The Smiths, teams up with British actress Maxine Peake for a spoken-word song about homelessness. In perhaps the most surprising combination, Italian film composer Daniele Luppi collaborates with the Brooklyn post-punk band Parquet Courts on "Soul And Cigarette."

Hear all the songs below.

Anna Burch, '2 Cool 2 Care'

From Quit The Curse

My ears always perk at the phrase: "Can I be real for a second?" What follows is almost always better than the standard polite chit-chat for nice people (public radio stations are full of that). When Anna Burch sings, "I like you best, when you're a mess," I can't help but think she shares that affinity. "2 Cool 2 Care" puts a bubblegum filter on why people are most relatable when they're vulnerable. Burch feels lovably skeptical when touching on attraction and boredom; these are pop music staples for sure, but her spin on them is a fun one. This record should be a biggie in 2018.

Nick Brunner, Capital Public Radio's Hey, Listen!

Jordan Rakei, 'Eye To Eye'

From Wallflower

When Jordan Rakei opens his mouth on "Eye To Eye," all you hear is heartache. The tone in his undulating voice, set to the strum of pretty guitar chords, breaks every romantic's heart. "It's the birth of a star," Rakei sings prophetically in the opening lines. You said it, kid.

The song, the first cut off the Australian singer-songwriter's second full-length, Wallflower, is a tale of all-consuming adulation told through juxtaposed poetic images. But the words might as well be nonsense as it's his sound — a quivering voice that suggests Devendra Banhart and Anohni — that carries the real message. The track, like the artist, daringly skirts pop, R&B and indie rock. It's an experimental variant of the sad bastard music we fall sway to when life turns blue.

Rakei is no also-ran. At the two-minute mark, he surrenders any notion of being Elliott Smith reborn when the music left-turns into a Radiohead-esque angular guitar maze. After two more minutes of vocal vamping, it morphs again into a synthetic anthem that fuses haunting "Karma Police" electric piano, mechanical drum rolls and cymbal-crashing syncopation. "Pleasure to have met you," he coos to his beloved. The feeling is mutual.

David Hyland, Wisconsin Public Radio

Daniele Luppi & Parquet Courts, 'Soul And Cigarette'

From MILANO

At first glance, this looks to be a rather unlikely pairing, but once you get past the initial shock of teaming the Italian film composer with the Brooklyn post-punk outfit, you realize this is a match made in heaven. The song comes from MILANO, Luppi's tribute to Milan in the '80s, spotlighting the decadence and deviance of the time. The city was alive, and the possibilities appeared endless. "Soul And Cigarette" shares this optimism, opening with the whimsical sounds of a glockenspiel and containing lush lyrics that are rich with imagery. Parquet Courts approach this song in the same manner as the The Modern Lovers or Pavement: a reserved style that holds back, but you know they could unleash power on a moment's notice. "Soul And Cigarette" is one of those songs that transports you to a time and place far away and makes you never want to leave.

Benji McPhail, The Colorado Sound

The Weather Station, 'Thirty'

From The Weather Station

Female voices are louder than ever, and The Weather Station is no exception. Toronto-based musician Tamara Lindeman, known as The Weather Station, has released her fourth, self-titled album, and a video for its latest single, "Thirty."

The song, and its socially relevant video, narrates a tale about the uncertain first year of her transitional third decade. In the video, Lindeman is performing alone in front of a crowd of men in a television studio. She conveys a lot with so little, feverishly telling a familiar story of being loved and dismissed. The airy quality of her vocals is endearing while she spins a vivid, intensely personal narrative through the lyrics. The detailed description of these accounts immediately reels you in: "Yeah, I could see it so simple, unsubtle / Impossible, clearly / And strange / Far and as close as a mountain range / On the horizon driving all day / There I was, so sane / So plain after everything."

With a voice that is often compared to fellow Canadian Joni Mitchell, The Weather Station has established her own brand of sad optimism coupled with the confidence and determination of Aimee Mann.

Vasilia Scouras, WVPB's Mountain Stage

Joon Moon, 'Tiger'

From Moonshine Corner

There's a rich history of American artists creating some of their best work in France, and plenty of French artists have drawn inspiration from American trends. Into this tradition steps Joon Moon — Parisian producer/songwriter Julien Decoret, drummer Raphaël Chassin and Kansas City expat singer Krystle Warren. Fittingly, the collaboration began at Decoret's studio in Montmartre, the Paris neighborhood famous for its artistic history (including a 1923 stint from American poet Langston Hughes). The resulting debut album, Moonshine Corner, mixes French cool and American soul; pop and trip-hop support R&B and jazz inflections. The record delivers a consciously retro-modern vibe by pairing contemporary recording techniques with vintage '60s and '70s instruments, and the whole effect is on display (supporting Warren's remarkable slow-burn vocals) on the single "Tiger."

Micah Schweizer, Wyoming Public Radio

Otis Jr. and the Seventh Sons, 'Seventh Son'

From The Pope's Long Con

When a song has been covered over a dozen times, you'd think bringing something new to it would be almost impossible. But Otis Jr. and a band of Louisville all-stars (including members of My Morning Jacket, Wax Fang and Twin Limb) do just that with this Willie Dixon classic. The track combines performances that hew closely to the source material with seemingly incongruous production, imbuing it with an almost Lynchian undertone. Commissioned as the theme for an investigative podcast, this track stands on its own as a soulful yet off-kilter throwback jam.

Sean Cannon, WFPK

Giraffage, 'Green Tea' (feat. Angelica Bess)

From Too Real

Charlie Yin, better known as Giraffage, is an artist whose eclectic music leanings have run the gamut in sound-painting, ranging from chillwave and deep dance to dream pop. His latest lush, atmospheric masterpiece, "Green Tea," (found on the studio album Too Real) possesses all those hallmarks and more. Featuring sultry, sensual vocal work by Angelica Bess (of Body Language), the track is a smooth, danceable ditty, but also a female empowerment anthem — a very timely sentiment considering the present climate of the country.

"Green Tea" was created in Giraffage's bedroom and took only 30 minutes to put together, but another six months to find the right vocalist to accentuate it. And Bess does that in spades. The song is a perfect marriage on wax: Bess' voice is the perfect complement to a melodic, dreamy production that liberally employs techno and deep house flourishes. The result is a tune that exudes authenticity and street credibility despite its move closer toward a commercial sound. It's clear that Giraffage has managed to become a master at creating a vibe — one that's refreshing, exhilarating and uplifting — which represents electronica at its finest.

Chris Campbell, WDET's The Progressive Underground

Superorganism, 'Something For Your M.I.N.D.'

From Something For Your M.I.N.D.

Orono, an 18-year-old Japanese girl who just graduated high school in Maine after leaving her family in Japan to become "a musician or artist of some sort" and hopefully go to college in the States, met the rest of her band after scrolling though YouTube and seeing their song in the "recommended" section. She saw the band when it went on tour in Japan and met with them after the show at a Hard Rock Café. They became Facebook friends and "shared memes and all that" with each other for about a year until they emailed her a demo from New Zealand. She sent back the melody and lyrics hours later. That song would become "Something For Your M.I.N.D."

You might compare her voice to Kimya Dawson, but really, "I'm doing a rip-off of what Stephen Malkmus sings like," Orono tells me over the phone. She sings, or rather talks over wild production on this song. Above apple crunches for production, rubber-band bass lines and pitched-down background vocals that make the whole thing feel like it's melting, Orono serves as a calming guide on this journey through the M.I.N.D.

Justin Barney, Radio Milwaukee

Johnny Marr and Maxine Peake, 'The Priest'

From The Priest

Stop me if you think you've heard this one before: A former Smiths member is making a political record. Now, what if I told you it wasn't the guy you expected (Morrissey), but Johnny Marr, guitarist and co-songwriter of the legendary Manchester quartet. Marr, patron saint of rock 'n' roll, has politics on the brain. As he told the British music magazine Q, "you're living in this world and you can't do anything about it. So much of the record is about dislocation. Whether it's being forced by the political system or because of personal demons. I was trying to imagine an alternative society." (I swear this is not a Morrissey quote.)

Cue "The Priest," a song featuring a spoken-word performance from British actress Maxine Peake, tackling a theme that cuts across all spectrums of life: homelessness. Joe Gallagher was homeless when he wrote the story behind this song (and its short film, seen below). According to The Guardian, Peake found Gallagher's story in a diary-like column, written for the Scottish magazine The Big Issue, that documented his time on the streets of Edinburgh. The words and subject matter resonated hard with Peake and Marr, and with the center of Manchester as the setting, Marr paints a driving, moody soundscape behind Peake's stark and vivid performance. I like spoken-word records because they force you to pay attention. It's a hypnotic song that's hard to ignore.

Stephen Kallao, WXPN

Samantha Fish, "Gone For Good"

From Belle Of The West

This one goes out to all the women in the room who are just plain tired of trying to attain someone else's ideal, to all the women in the room who are ready to move forward and follow — or break — their own rules, and to all the women in the room who've finally said "enough." Samantha Fish doesn't mince words on the final track of her new release, Belle Of The West, and it all boils down to one very succinct line: "Thank God you're gone for good." With the kind of incessant foot-stomping and down-and-dirty slide guitar that's become a trademark of Fish's contemporary take on classic country swamp blues, "Gone For Good" follows a familiar trope: the breakup song, the revenge song, the "I'm better off without you" song. But Fish's way of looking at the situation feels fresh and earthy; she's angry, but she's not going to let her "losing grip on my sweet once-upon-a-time" hold her back.

A Life Cut Short - R.F. Minner      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

A stroll through the Hurricane Cemetery in Crittenden County, Kentucky will show the names of many families who lived and died in the surrounding area. Prominent among those names is Minner. That isn't unusual, though, as the land for the nearby Hurricane Methodist Church was obtained  from Richard Minner, an early area settler, in 1843.[1]  In 1875, Robert H. Haynes gave land for the cemetery,[2] but I suspect the Minner family had already established a burying ground either on or adjoining the Haynes land.  One of the early burials here was for Richard F. Minner, who served in the Union Army during the Civil War.

R.F. Minner
born May 20, 1820
died Feb. 12, 1867

Minner married Catherine  Stalions 30 May 1839 Livingston County, Kentucky. [3] After her death, he married Mrs. Mary C. Kilpatrick 22 December 1858 Crittenden County.[4]

On October 1863 at the age of 43, Richard F. Minner was mustered into Co. E, 48th KY Infantry as a captain at Princeton for one year's service.  The 48th KY Infantry was  composed mainly of men from the western Kentucky counties of Trigg, Lyon, Livingston, Crittenden, Union, Christian, Caldwell, Muhlenburg, Breckenridge and Grayson. [5] On the 26th of February 1864, Minner wrote to the Headquarters of the U.S. Forces requesting 15 days leave to go to Crittenden County about the 10th of March next to attend to business of his father's estate. [6] His father, Daniel Minner,  had recently died.[7] Richard F. Minner was mustered out of service 15 December 1864.

After the war, Minner returned to his life as a farmer in Crittenden County, but his life would end just a few years later. The following newspaper death notice gives the details of his death. "Captain R.F. Minner, late of the army, was caught in a mill wheel in Crittenden county, a few days ago, his arm broken in several places, and his ribs severed from the back bone. He lingered until Monday night last, and died in great agony. The accident occurred at Mr. Wilson's mill."[8]

Minner was laid to rest in Hurricane Cemetery near the graves of his parents, his first wife and several of his infant children.

Twig Harper & Bill Nace - Live at Dreamland (Open Mouth, 2018) ****      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
By Nick Metzger

Live at Dreamland is a writhing, oozing, viscous specimen of electronic free improvisation by two of the Northeast-US’s true maestros. I first became aware of guitarist Bill Nace through his Vampire Belt collaboration with Chris Corsano. YouTube videos of their early shows prompted me to mail-order their first two self-produced CDRs and I’ve been a fan of their post-Blue Humans style clamor ever since. Besides Vampire Belt (and various Vampire Belt + 1 configurations), Nace has worked with a diverse cast of talent ranging from his collaborations with the Italian psych jazz powerhouse Jooklo Duo to Body/Head, to his free guitar duo with Kim Gordon, to his collaboration with the poet and writer Charles Plymell on Apocalypse Rose. He also runs Open Mouth Records, which has released fantastic music in ultra-limited editions for well over a decade now. Contemporary psychonaut Twig Harper (formerly of Nautical Almanac) is originally from the same 90's noise/total music scene that produced Wolf Eyes and Andrew W.K. among others. Following his relocation to West Baltimore he established Tarantula Hill which hosts local bands and serves as the headquarters for his isolation tank business. If you’re not familiar with Harper’s work, his Intuitive American Esoterica trilogy is a great place to start. The two men toured together last year, this record being a documentation of their performance at Louisville’s sadly-since-closed Dreamland venue (recorded by the most-affable Tim Barnes).

The piece begins with a swelling tape loop over which percussive noises and disembodied moans intermingle. Bowed guitar joins as the vocalizations intensify and are stretched out and modulated via Harper’s homemade electronics into an impenetrable kaleidoscope of sound. About half way through the first side the piece slows and becomes more introspective, alternating between drone and silence. Nace then goes in a more direct path, providing metallic popping noises and string scrapes. Harper runs eerie swells over which his electronics jot out their weird logic. Low tones close the first side over a wash of tape delay and feedback. The second half finds our heroes beginning with what sounds like tape loops of breaking glass being eaten by the tape machine. Shaking bells create a ritualistic vibe over which Harper pushes the delay feedback into the red. All of this action throws up a miasma of residual sounds that builds up into a din before succeeding into a section of contemplative drone and scattered echoing horrors. The guitar scrapings coalesce with the specters that Harper has conjured, whirring and humming into silence. Harper provides aftershocks in the form of several jarring electronic spasms, bringing the set to a close.

Harper and Nace are an interesting pairing given their respective sound palettes, and it’s a little hard to discern who is doing what on this recording at times but that’s not really important. What is important is that it’s a nicely done, well recorded album that documents an interesting coupling of musicians, performing in a fantastic venue, during its final days. RIP Dreamland, you are sorely missed.

(The Kentucky Bourbon Trail).

А всем известная песня «Happy Birthday to you», была написана именно в Кентукки.

Tomberlin - Any Other Way.

Background - Tomberlin, the rising Louisville, KY-based artist, has released a video for "Any Other Way," the opener from her anticipated Saddle Creek debut album, At Weddings. On her deeply moving debut album At Weddings, Sarah Beth Tomberlin writes with the clarity and wisdom of an artist well beyond her years. Immeasurable space circulates within the album's ten songs, which set Tomberlin's searching voice against lush backdrops of piano and guitar. Like Julien Baker and Sufjan Stevens, she has a knack for transforming the personal into parable. Like Grouper, she has a feel for the transcendent within the ordinary.

Born in Jacksonville, Florida, and now based in Louisville, Kentucky, Tomberlin wrote most of At Weddings while living with her family in southern Illinois during her late teens and early twenties. At 16, she finished her homeschooling curriculum and went to college at a private Christian school she describes, only half-jokingly, as a "cult." By 17, she had dropped out of school, returned home, and begun to face a period of difficult transition in her life. The daughter of a Baptist pastor, Tomberlin found herself questioning not only her faith, but her identity, her purpose, and her place in the world.

"I was working, going to school, and experiencing heavy isolation," Tomberlin says of the time when she first began writing the songs on At Weddings. "It felt monotonous, like endless nothingness. It was a means to get through to the next step of life." In songwriting, Tomberlin found relief and lucidity she had trouble articulating otherwise. When she was 19, she wrote "Tornado" on her parents' piano, and began to develop confidence in her music. A year later, she had written enough songs to fill an album.

Throughout At Weddings, Tomberlin's lyrics yearn for stability and belonging, a near-universal desire among young people learning to define themselves on their own terms for the first time. "I am a tornado with big green eyes and a heartbeat," she sings on "Tornado," her voice stretching to the top of her range. Rich, idiosyncratic imagery - a fly killed with a self-help book, brown paper bags slashed violently open, clouds that weep over a lost love - sidle up to profound realizations about learning to be alive in this world. "To be a woman is to be in pain," Tomberlin notes on "I'm Not Scared." On "A Video Game," she muses, "I wish I was a hero with something beautiful to say."

At Weddings is laden with reverence for music itself, for the power it has to heal others and help people navigate their lives. It is a record about learning to love oneself and others without reservation, from a place of deep sincerity - a lifelong challenge whose tribulations Tomberlin articulates beautifully. "My number one goal with my music is for honesty and transparency that helps other people find ways to exist," she says. With At Weddings, this remarkable young songwriter offers up comfort and wonder in equal measure. WEBSITE.

Back in June we featured 'Seventeen' describing the song as "a seriously good singer, songwriter track, with gorgeous vocals and a beautifully crafted musical arrangement that adds even more emotion." Now we have a new video for 'Any Other Way' the opening song on 'At Weddings', a beautiful album, as is further evidenced by this adorable piece. If either of these songs have grabbed your attention, I would suggest that making a little time to explore the remaining material, will be both rewarding and delight you even more.

Caezar - Hold On.

Background - UK natives Caezar have announced their much-anticipated debut EP ‘Hail!’ and have just shared their exciting new single with the world, titled ‘Hold On’. The group will be making their release through RG Records and have had the pleasure of having Justin Broad on board as the producer for this latest project, who has produced for names such as Jessie J, Emeli Sandé, Izzy Bizu and Corinne Bailey Rae. ‘Hail!’ also boasts mastering by formidable mastering engineer Stuart Hawkes, who’s work on artists such as Amy Winehouse, Clean Bandit, Rudimental and has been indispensable to pop music the world over. Playing alongside giant names such as Hozier, James Bay and Jack Garrett, Caezar can really hold their own in the scene and have had the pleasure of playing at the award-winning independent Barn on the Farm Festival as well as being featured on the acclaimed radio platform BBC Music Introducing, who have discovered many exceptional UK artists in the pop-rock genre such as Declan McKenna and Catfish and the Bottlemen.

Hailing from the unassuming town of Cheltenham, the two founding members of Caezar, Chris Quiqley and Rich Gills decided to take their passion for music to the next level when the pair found themselves both suffering from sports injuries that meant they would no longer be able to play rugby for their local club. It was under the lights of the rugby pitch where the two ex-players decided that they would take their previously hidden musical talents to the stage. When Zoe joined the band in 2017, the trio really found their niche. Her soft synths and sweet-as-honey backing vocals helped build on the unique crossover of pop, indie and rock elements that make up the band’s special sound.

Caezar’s single ‘Hold On’ starts off with an infectious guitar lick that sets the mood of the song - pensive but upbeat. When Chris Quigley’s vocals enter the mix, it’s easy to hear that the group can be likened to modern pop-rock heroes Imagine Dragons and Bastille. The band’s mix of skillfully-played live instruments and expertly produced electronic beats coupled with strong, melodic lead vocals creates an impressively versatile sound. While there is a clear thoughtfulness in the lyricism and delivery of ‘Hold On’, the track still manages to create an uplifting, anthemic mood, with a dash of funk thrown in, much like the work of Will Heard. The track is one that’ll touch the listener on an emotional level while still making sure that the dance floor is packed with bodies moving to the crisp, fun beats.

The band explained that, “Just because you love someone, doesn't mean it's right. ‘Hold On’ was written out of the conflicted feelings of breaking up with someone who you still love. The track was one of the first songs the band wrote, and has since come to life after years of performing the track at festivals and finally in the studio with Justin Broad.” WEBSITE.

A sophisticated yet understated guitar opening on 'Hold On' is quickly joined by some addictive and captivating vocals and background harmonies. The song is undoubtedly cool and slick, what makes it stand out is the soulful delivery and the seemingly suppressed emotion within the vocals.

Cup of Coffee: Castellanos hits 4 for 4; Rodriguez throws complete game      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
8/9 Cup of Coffee: The teams in the upper minors struggled as Portland was blown out and Pawtucket blew a short-lived lead late in the game, but the second DSL team went 2-0 on the day, and the GCL Red Sox earned a big win. Pedro Castellanos (pictured, right) highlighted the hitting performances with a perfect 4-for-4 day, including a home run that helped put the game away. Jorge Rodriguez delivered an unconventional complete game for DSL Red Sox2 as well in their regularly scheduled game after they completed a suspended one in the morning.

-----

Louisville Bats (CIN) 6, Pawtucket Red Sox 5
The teams traded four-run eighths, but Pawtucket could not strike back to force the game to the bottom of the ninth as Louisville held on. Brandon Phillips hit 4 for 5 with three doubles while Rusney Castillo added three hits of his own. Chandler Shepherd allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings. Travis Lakins followed with a shut-down seventh, but with one out in the eighth, a passed ball followed by an error by Josh Ockimey allowed a run to score. Later in the frame, after walks by both Lakins and Robby Scott loaded the bases, old friend Nick Longhi cleared them with a double.

-----

Erie SeaWolves (DET) 18, Portland Sea Dogs 1
Michael Chavis had three hits, and Chad De La Guerra had two more, but bright spots were few and far between in a complete drubbing in Erie. After Kyle Hart gave up five runs (two earned) in five innings, the wheels truly fell off. Harrison Cooney allowed six runs to cross the plate without recording an out, and Jared Oliver had five more (three earned) on his tab in 1 2/3 innings. Jordan Betts made his second pitching appearance as a position player, giving up a pair in the eighth.

-----

Wilmington Blue Rocks (KC) 6, Salem Red Sox 2
Jerry Downs had two hits, but the other eight guys in the lineup combined for three more as Salem dropped the middle game to Wilmington. Kutter Crawford had a quality start, allowing three runs on eight hits in six innings of work. He also struck out seven and walked one batter. Daniel Gonzalez surrendered three runs, one of which was earned, on four hits in two innings to complete the ballgame. He struck out six but allowed two home runs.

-----

Greenville Drive 7, Columbia Fireflies (NYM) 1
Recently promoted NewYork-Penn League all-star Eduard Bazardo dominated for Greenville on Wednesday, allowing just one run in seven innings. He gave up five hits and struck out four without walking a batter. Columbia was in striking distance, down three, but a three-run eighth pushed the game out of reach. Pedro Castellanos was 4 for 4 with a two-run home run as part of the eighth inning, with Jordan Wren hitting 3 for 4, also with a two-run blast. He added a triple as well, as the two accounted for seven of Greenville's 12 hits.

-----

Lowell Spinners 3, Staten Island Yankees 1
It was a wet one on Staten Island, as a 1:45 rain delay pushed back first pitch to 8:45, but the Spinners were able to come out with the win, despite recording just five hits. Devlin Granberg and Lane Milligan each had two hits, with Milligan adding a home run. Tyler Dearden accounted for the fifth hit with a solo shot of his own. Taylor Ahearn pitched six sparkling frames, allowing just a run on two hits. He walked one and struck out five, while Andrew Politi delivered a perfect ninth with two strikeouts mixed in to complete the ballgame.

-----

GCL Red Sox 10, GCL Orioles 2
The Red Sox grabbed five runs in the fifth on the way to a dominating win, despite the bottom third of the order going 0 for 11. Elih Marrero scored three times to go along with a triple, and Brandon Howlett was 2 for 4 with a home run and five RBI. Juan Hernandez and Keibert Petit each had two hits, with Petit adding a pair of RBI. Alex Scherff pitched two innings in a rehab stint, allowing a run on three hits, striking out one. Yusniel Padron-Artiles, Connor Berry and Robert Baker ended the contest with five shutout innings.

-----

DSL Dodgers Robinson 3, DSL Red Sox1 2
Felix Cepeda's start ended after one inning where he walked three, allowed a hit and struck out a pair and Jeison Pena picked up the slack. He went six strong frames, allowing just two unearned runs on three hits to go along with a walk and two strikeouts. Gilberto Jiminez, Wilker Vargas, and Lewis Baez each had 2-for-5 days, with Jiminez roping a triple, but they accounted for six of eight Red Sox hits.

-----

While only four Red Sox recorded seven hits, it was enough as the Dodgers committed three errors in the completion of a game suspended back on July 23. Jorge Rodriguez delivered an unusual complete game, allowing two runs on nine hits, walking one against seven strikeouts--all over three weeks. After pitching the first four innings last month, Rodriguez re-took the mound for his regular spot in the rotation, completing his own effort. Gabriel Perez, Nelfy Abreu, and Ronaldo Pulgar each had two hits, with Perez adding a triple. Abreu, Pulgar and Oscar Rangel each had an RBI as well.

DSL Red Sox2 5, DSL Dodgers Guerrero 4 (7 Innings)
In the regularly-scheduled contest, the Red Sox resisted a two-run surge from the Dodgers in the bottom of the seventh. Gabriel Quintero had two RBI, and Kleiber Rodriguez had two base knocks with an RBI as well. Brayan Bello gave his team five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits. He also struck out an impressive 10 batters. Gregoria Segovia finished it off, giving up the same two runs on the same four hits in two innings. He struck out three batters.

-----

Player of the Night: It's tough to argue with a 4-for-4 performance, especially when it includes a clutch home run late in a game. Pedro Castellanos played a key role in Greenville's win on Wednesday. He got two games in with the Drive in 2017 and has spent the entire 2018 season in South Carolina and has been hitting. His slash line was at .286/.319/.359 heading into the day and he has only struck out 34 times in 245 at-bats.

The 20-year-old is on an eight-game hitting streak and has at least two hits in his last four games. He has only struck out twice during the streak.

the uncertainty of waiting      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Was Merton 50 years ahead of himself, or is this something that is always with us - the uncertainty of waiting ... ?

"Ever increasing frenzy, tension, explosiveness of this country. You feel it in the monastery with people like Raymond. In the priesthood with so many upset, one way or another, and so many leaving. So many just cracking up, falling apart. People in Detroit buying guns. Groups of vigilantes being formed to shoot Negroes. Louisville is a violent place, too. Letters in U.S. Catholic about the war article -- some of the shrillest came from Louisville. This is really a mad country, and an explosion of the madness is inevitable. The only question -- can it somehow be less bad than one anticipates? Total chaos is quite possible, though I don't anticipate that. But the fears, frustrations, hatreds, irrationalities, hysterias, are all there, and all powerful enough to blow everything wide open. One feels that they want violence. It is preferable to the uncertainty of "waiting"." (March 12, 1968)

Nevertheless, it has been relatively rare for SEC to pursue enforcement actions against outside directors based on an alleged failure to fulfill that role. But while these actions are rare, the agency does periodically bring enforcement actions against directors whom the agency contends shirked their duties.

For example, on September 9, 2015, the agency filed civil fraud charges against Stephen Pence, the former board Chair and majority shareholder of staffing services company General Employment Enterprises. As discussed in the agency’s press release about the enforcement action, which was accompanied by a separate enforcement action against GEE’s outside auditing firm and several of the audit firm’s partners, Pence, a former U.S. attorney and former Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky, allegedly made misleading statements to the auditors involving a supposed $2.3 million certificate of deposit investment of the company. (The bank that supposedly had issued the CD had no record of the transaction.) Pence also allegedly signed GEE’s 2009 annual report despite knowing that it contained misleading statements about the $2.3 million CD transaction and other related party transactions.

Pence allegedly undertook these actions while acting as a frontman for a convicted felon Wilbur Anthony Huff, who allegedly had funded Pence’s purported acquisition of a majority stake in the company and provided Pence with other financial benefits, as well as a Cadillac Escalade. In its action against Pence, the SEC is seeking permanent injunctions, disgorgement of ill-gotten gains plus prejudgment interest and penalties, and an officer-and-director bar. A copy of the SEC’s complaint against Pence can be found here. A September 9, 2015 Louisville Courier-Journal article about the SEC’s enforcement action can be found here.

According to an October 16, 2015 Law 360 memo by the Cahill Gordon law firm and entitled “A Brief History of SEC Enforcement Actions” (here, subscription required), while SEC actions against corporate directors are “rare,” they are a “key component of the SEC’s targeting of misconduct of gatekeepers.” According to its current Chair, Mary Jo White, the SEC seeks to put directors on notice that the SEC will pursue “those who should be serving at the neighborhood watch, but who fail to do their jobs.”

The law firm memo details several other recent SEC enforcement actions against corporate directors, including the March 2014 action the agency brought against Ivan Gothner, the audit committee chair for AgFeed Industries, Inc., who allegedly failed to appropriately investigate and disclose accounting fraud by executives at AgFeed’s China offices. Among other things, Gothner allegedly ignored repeated “massive red flags,” including email warnings and a recommendation from Chinese in-house counsel to engage a third-party to investigate the misconduct. The SEC’s March 11, 2014 press release involving its action against Gothner can be found here. My prior post about the Gothner enforcement action can be found here.

The SEC has brought other enforcement actions against corporate directors during White’s tenure as the agency’s Chair, including the 2013 action and negotiated settlement involving eight former directors of Regions Morgan Keegan, who allegedly did not fulfill their responsibilities to make fair-value determinations of securities held by the company, as required by the federal securities laws. The agency’s June 13, 2013 press release about the Regions Morgan Keegan directors’ action can be found here.

According to the law firm memo, even before the current agency chair emphasized the agency’s commitment to enforcing corporate directors’ gatekeeper role, the agency has “brought actions since the early 2000s against the directors who dramatically shirked their duties.” The memo cites as example several enforcement actions that the agency pursued in prior years. Among the other cases the memo cites is the enforcement action the agency brought against Shirley Kiang, the audit committee chairwoman of L&L Energy, whom the SEC alleged had signed annual and quarterly reports certifying compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley’s requirement that a company have an active CFO while aware that the company did  not have an active CFO. My discussion of the action against Kiang can be found here.

While directors may, as the law firm memo notes, find these agency actions to be “disconcerting,” it is important to note that the agency’s actions have “involved significant allegations of wrongdoing by directors.” Several of the actions, including the one filed recently against Pence, involve allegations of “intentional deception of auditors and glaring conflicts of interest”; in other enforcement actions filed against corporate directors, the SEC alleged that the directors involved had “completely failed to perform the duties required of [them] as an auditor and as a director.”

That is, the SEC’s enforcement actions have involved instances of a “significant departure from normal corporate governance and appropriate director conduct.” The SEC has demonstrated its willingness to “investigate board actions and inactions in the face of so-called red flags.”

The lesson for board members from these enforcement actions is that directors should spend appropriate time “learning about their gatekeeper obligations.” Certain issues, according to the law firm memo, merit special attention, including the importance of “setting and maintaining an effective tone at the top,” as well as “evaluating the substance and frequency of officer communications with the board.” In particular, “directors should take prompt action to investigate red flags and take decisive actions where misconduct has been identified.” The directors should also “periodically evaluate the independence of the controller function and adequacy of controls” and “have an open and robust dialogue with internal and external auditors.”

While, as the memo indicates, there are steps that corporate directors can take to reduce the possibility that they might become involved in an SEC enforcement action, directors will also want reassurance that they will be able to try to protect themselves if the SEC does file an action against them. A well-constructed D&O insurance program should provide the directors with a measure of protection, at least with respect to costs incurred in defending against an SEC enforcement action.

The typical D&O insurance policy will usually provide that covered loss under the policy does not include fines and penalties, so monetary amounts imposed in connection with an SEC enforcement action presumptively would not be covered. However, all else equal, the directors’ costs of defending the action typically will be covered.

It is important when considering these issues to take into account the fact that when these types of claims arise, there typically are multiple individual defendants involved, many or most of whom may also seek to access the proceeds of the insurance policy in order to defend themselves. There may also be related civil litigation pending as well. The presence of multiple parties and multiple actions can quickly erode the policy limits. These considerations have important implications for insurance buyers when analyzing limits selection issues – that is, when trying to decide how much insurance to buy. A well constructed insurance program should be built with an eye toward the possibility of the kind of catastrophic circumstance that could require substantial insurance simply in order to allow the targeted individuals and entities to be able to defend themselves.

Another implication from the possibility that multiple parties and multiple actions could put potentially competing demands on a company’s D&O insurance program is that outside directors may want their insurance arranged so that there is a layer or layers of insurance available only for the defense and indemnity obligations of the outside directors. A layer of excess Side A insurance where the only named insureds are the non-officer directors will provide the directors with an added layer of protection and provide some assurance that they will not find themselves with an insurance program that has been exhausted before all of the claims have been resolved.

A startling photo of abandoned Birds shows the electric scooter backlash has begun      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

  • Electric scooter startups are raising billions of dollars in capital, but the backlash might be beginning.
  • A Santa Monica resident posted a startling image on Twitter comparing scores of abandoned Bird electric scooters to the Hitchcock film "The Birds."
  • Electric scooter startups have run into trouble with city officials around the US for dumping their wares into new locations without asking.

Silicon Valley's venture capitalists might be pouring billions into electric scooter startups, but firms like Bird, Lime, and Spin are already facing a backlash from residents.

This was highlighted by a light-hearted tweet from Madeline Eskind, a product manager at Twitter. She posted an image of scores of abandoned Bird scooters in the startup's home city of Santa Monica, with the caption: "The 2018 remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s 'The Birds.'"

The plot of "The Birds" revolves around a huge number of birds going berserk and attacking a town and its residents.

Though intended as a joke, the photo highlights issues of electric scooter oversupply.

The electric scooter startup model involves dropping hundreds of dockless scooters into a city and then hoping people will use them.

Despite the startups themselves racking up huge valuations, that approach hasn't always been successful, or to residents' taste.

Bird pulled out of Louisville, Kentucky a day after launching because it put scooters into the city without asking officials. Similarly, Nashville wrote a cease-and-desist because Bird users were simply abandoning scooters by the sidewalks. And San Francisco was forced to issue permits to a handful of scooter companies to clampdown on the spiralling numbers of scooters clogging up the city streets.

The Hurry Up: Cornerback MiQuan Grace, Defensive End Fadil Diggs Discuss Summer Visits to Ohio State      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
The Hurry Up is your nightly dose of updates from the Ohio State football recruiting trail, keeping tabs on the latest from commits and targets from around the country.

HOMEGROWN TALENT

We’ve discussed at length over the last few months the overall depth of next year’s recruiting class, seemingly overlooking some of the top-rated in-state prospects — like Cincinnati Winton Woods cornerback MiQuan Grace — in the process.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Grace has been to Ohio State numerous times in the last year, most recently for the Buckeyes’ Friday Night Lights recruiting extravaganza in late June, where he worked directly with new cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson.

“It was great, man,” Grace told Eleven Warriors. “He showed me a lot of love and gave me some great compliments. I know for a fact that I was the best defensive back in the camp. I wish you could have seen me. It was probably my best camp of the summer.”

Grace — the former teammate of Ohio State redshirt freshman defensive tackle Jerron Cage — grew particularly close to former assistant coordinator Kerry Coombs, but contact with the Buckeyes fell off a bit when Coombs took a job with the NFL’s Tennessee Titans following last season. Johnson quickly rekindled the relationship and invited Grace back to campus for a spring practice, however.

“He is a Cincinnati guy, as well, so it’s been a smooth transition,” Grace said. “We vibe a lot. He really understands me. We have a lot of great conversations.”

Grace holds early offers from Ball State, Cincinnati, Kent State, Kentucky and Toledo, but there’s no doubt Ohio State would shoot to the top of his list if the Buckeyes ever followed through with an offer of their own.

“It would mean the world to any kid,” Grace said. “But to be from Ohio, it's just a little more special.”

Ohio State already holds one commitment at the cornerback position from IMG Academy four-star Lejond Cavazos, and remains among the top schools for Arizona five-star Kelee Ringo, California five-star Elias Ricks, Texas five-star R.J. Mickens, Florida four-star Miles Brooks. Miami four-star commit Henry Gray is also a prime flip candidate, so the Buckeyes certainly have numerous options moving forward.

LASTING IMPRESSION

With that said, Ohio State hosted a number of underclassmen for unofficial visits late last month as part of one big recruiting weekend in between college football’s July and August dead periods.

Camden, New Jersey, Woodrow Wilson four-star defensive end Fadil Diggs was among those in attendance as he and several of his teammates made a stop in Columbus as part of a college tour that included stops at Louisville and Virginia. That includes three-star running back Muheem McCargo.

“It was real nice,” Diggs told Eleven Warriors.

This marked the first trip to campus for the 6-foot-4, 225-pound Diggs — who is considered the 12th-best weak-side defensive end and No. 207 prospect overall in the Class of 2020. He spent a considerable amount of time with head coach Urban Meyer and defensive line coach Larry Johnson, who offered back in May and showed him around campus that afternoon.

“Coach Johnson sat me down and showed me a lot of moves I can work on doing this season,” Diggs said. “Coach Meyer said he would love to coach me in the future.”

Diggs — who holds nearly two dozen offers from programs such as Cincinnati, Florida, Georgia, Nebraska, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Penn State, Virginia Tech and West Virginia — plans to return to campus for a game in the fall and then make a decision on his future following his junior season.

“I gotta get back down there soon,” he said.

UofL's freshman class includes more out-of-state students      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The University of Louisville says preliminary figures show its incoming freshman class includes a growing number of out-of-state students. Of the nearly 2,800 incoming students, the university says 22 percent are from outside Kentucky. UofL administrators believe that may be the highest percentage of out-of-state freshmen in the university's history. The university says engineering, biology, business, education and nursing are the five most popular majors of the incoming class. The school says the upcoming fall semester also marks a new record for the J.B. Speed School of Engineering with its largest incoming class ever.
Jake Shears Strikes Out On His Own       Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

In just over a decade, Scissor Sisters gained the respect of some of music's biggest figures. Bono said it was "the best pop group in the world." Elton John played piano on one of the band's songs. David Bowie wrote the band a fan letter.

Scissor Sisters first developed a huge following with LGBT crowds, then the United Kingdom fell in love with the New York City-based band. In its live shows, Scissor Sisters brought the spirit of underground New York clubs everywhere it went with singer and songwriter Jake Shears at the helm.

The group first garnered attention with its disco-pop cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb." "We were just in the studio messing around, and we really didn't know what we were doing," Shears says.

But the band wanted to be known for more than just a cover, he says, so they put out an album — then three more. But in 2012, the party came to an end. Shears parted ways with Babydaddy, Ana Matronic, Del Marquis and Randy Real.

"I never thought that I would make a solo record," Shears says. "I don't know why, it just seemed to be a very kind of narcissistic thing to do."

In the time since, he's written and published a memoir and performed in the musical Kinky Boots on Broadway. Now, he's finally taking time to release his eponymous solo album, out Aug. 10.

Shears worked on the album between New Orleans and Louisville, Ky., resulting in a distinct Southern influence in the new music. Shears still writes big, audacious songs that should appeal to his Scissor Sisters fans, but his new work is also a departure — a more personal album with sometimes painfully-revealing lyrics.

Shears spoke with NPR's Noel King about his formative time writing music in New Orleans and Scissor Sisters' legacy (including if the band will ever get back together.) Hear the full conversation at the audio link and read an edited transcript below.

Noel King: I've read interviews with you where you talk about feeling a little bit "ghettoized" by mainstream press as a gay band. Does time make you feel better about that? Do you now look back and be like, "Who cares? I was famous."

Jake Shears: It wasn't like, "Who cares? I was famous." It's more like I'm glad that in certain ways, in entertainment, I feel like we're sort of through that.

Back then, it was like everything was about me and Babydaddy and Del being gay. That was the first thing any press wanted to talk about. It was frustrating, but I knew if we just kept moving ahead, it was going to make it easier for people that came after us.

I was listening to your new song "Sad Song Backwards," and I was doing that thing you do where you don't quite pay attention to the lyrics. And I was just bopping up and down, and all of a sudden I heard you say "Taking double fistfuls of Prozac," and I was like, "Oh God, I got to go back to the beginning and figure out what he's saying." What is this about?

It's really dark. I had just broken up with my partner of 11 years when I went to New Orleans, and I was just devastated by myself, and I knew I sort of had to write my way out of it. The concept, though, when I had the idea for it I thought about that joke: What do you get when you play a country song backwards? You get your wife back, your dog back, your car back, your truck back, whatever.

It sounds like you love the South. The song "Mississippi Delta (I'm Your Man)" seems like a love letter to the Mississippi Delta.

New Orleans changed my life. I'd always dreamed of moving there, and I just hit this crossroads in my life where I knew I needed to go somewhere, I needed to do something, and so, I was like, "I'm going to New Orleans." I just went by myself and just started living there and taking it all in and writing songs. All of these songs really go back directly to my own heart and my life and experiences the last couple years.

I think of the South as a place where you can't quite be as outrageous as you were in New York in your early years. You guys were known for really bringing down the house. I'm just wondering, when you're living in the South, do you feel like you become a different person? Do you present differently publicly? How do you change?

It still can get pretty wild. I mean, New Orleans is the most flamboyant, eccentric — there's no place like it in this country. I can walk down the street, like, in a naughty nurse's uniform and go to a bar at three in the afternoon, and no one is going to look at me twice.

And I can tell you've done it.

I've been known to do stuff like that [Laughs]. And Louisville is a very liberal city, and what I love about Louisville is that in a lot of bigger cities you can go to a gay bar, and it's just gay men, but down there, you can go out and it's ... Everybody's kind of out. And that's also something I experience a lot in New Orleans.

It sounds like evolving is important to you.

I go on this cycle, like every five years or so, there's just a transformation I kind of need to constantly be going under. I just love being creative, and if I'm not making something, if I'm not getting my hands dirty, I'm just not happy.

Do you mind if I ask — because there are members of our listening audience who will kill me if I don't — what happened with Scissor Sisters?

We just called it a hiatus. There's no plans to do anything. When we started Scissor Sisters, we were just doing performance art in bars, and I think that's all we ever thought it was going to be. We had such a great run. We did four albums. But my instinct was everyone needs to go be able to live their own lives now. I would never write off doing another Scissors record — I think we probably will someday. But that's why it stopped, because I felt like it was time to give everybody time to find their own way.

Cup of Coffee: Chavis, Dalbec blast two homers apiece      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
8/10 Cup of Coffee: While the system's former valedictorian was hitting for the cycle up in Toronto, its two biggest power bats were leading the Sea Dogs. With two homers each, Bobby Dalbec (pictured) reached 30 homers on the season with nearly four weeks remaining and Michael Chavis continued his torrid stretch. Fellow hot hitters Pedro Castellanos and Jarren Duran led the way in Greenville's romp, and Mike Shawaryn paced Pawtucket's victory. Salem had the only loss among stateside affiliates, with Tanner Houck turning in an uneven but encouraging outing.

-----

Pawtucket Red Sox 6, Louisville Bats (CIN) 2
Mike Shawaryn turned in a solid start to pick up his first Triple-A victory. The former Maryland Terrapin allowed two runs on four hits in five innings, striking out seven and walking four. Shawaryn was backed by a 13-hit attack by the offense, led by the three hits off the bat of Jantzen Witte. Josh Ockimey ripped his first double since last week's promotion, giving him hits in 10 straight games across two levels. Rusney Castillo picked up his 27th double of the year as part of another two-hit night.

-----

Portland Sea Dogs 10, Erie SeaWolves (DET) 9
Thursday turned into a fireworks display on Lake Erie, as the two biggest power bats in the system both connected for two home runs each to help the Sea Dogs off to a 10-2 lead. Michael Chavis and Bobby Dalbec went back to back in the first inning, with Chavis connecting for a two run shot. Dalbec then delivered a solo blast in the fourth, followed by a Chavis solo shot the following inning. All the more impressive was that all four home runs came off of 2017 first-round pick and former Florida Gators ace Alex Faedo. Chavis got off to a slow start after being activated following his 80-game suspension, but he has been on fire recently. In seven games since the calendar turned to August, he is 13 for 24 with three homers, two doubles, four walks, and only three strikeouts. Easy to miss in the Chavis/Dalbec derby was a strong three-hit evening by Tate Matheny.

Dedgar Jimenez turned in a strong start, allowing two runs in six innings and striking out seven, departing with an eight run lead that seemed well in hand. The Portland bullpen was a roller coaster, with Trey Ball turning in a very rough outing. Ball surrendered five runs (four earned) in his one inning of work, causing his ERA to rise to 7.54 on the year.

-----

Wilmington Blue Rocks (KC) 6, Salem Red Sox 5
Salem fell despite having each member of its lineup reach base. Jerry Downs led the offensive attack, going 3 for 4 with a walk, two runs scored, and an RBI. Tanner Houck allowed more than two runs in a start for the first time sine July 12, but still had several positives to take away on Thursday night. In all, the 2017 first-round pick allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings. However, Houck struck out seven, walked only two, and induced seven ground ball outs. Austin Glorius returned to Salem after rehab stops in Greenville, Lowell, and the GCL. Glorius allowed a run on two hits in his inning of work. The subjet of Ian Cundall's Scouting Scratch posted earlier in the day, Durbin Feltman fired a perfect ninth, striking out one and throwing eight of 12 pitches for strikes.

-----

Greenville Drive 11, Columbia Fireflies (NYM) 1
Jarren Duran continued his incredible debut, leading the way in the Greenville romp. Duran was 2 for 5 with two runs scored, a stolen base, and an RBI. His hitting streak has now reached 20 games, and he is hitting .452 in seven games since a promotion from Lowell. Pedro Castellanos also continues to roll. The first baseman picked up two more hits, giving him five straight multi-hit efforts. Castellanos is 17 for 33 to start the month of August. Angel Padron cruised through six innings, allowing one run on five hits. 2017 sixth-roun pick Zach Schellenger followed with his South Atlantic League debut, striking out two in a hitless seventh inning.

-----

Lowell Spinners 5, Staten Island Yankees (NYY) 2
The teams were knotted at 1-1 through regulation, until a four-run outburst in the top of the 10th propelled the Spinners. After a Tyler Dearden base hit broke the tie, Devlin Granberg blasted a three-run homer to break the game open. It was Granberg's second hit of the night and third home run of the year, as the sixth-round pick raised his average to .315. Starter Yorvin Pantoja turned in a solid effort in the matinee, allowing just one run on three hits in five innings, striking out seven and walking three. Converted catcher Danny Bethea got the win in relief, allowing just an unearned run in two hitless innings.

-----

GCL Red Sox 10, GCL Orioles 4
The 2018 season in the GCL South Division has general consisted of the Red Sox and two other division rivals moving in and out of first place based on who has most recently gotten to beat up on the Orioles squad. After 43 games, the Sox are 15 games up on the O's and now in sole possession of first place in the division. Every member of the starting lineup recorded at least one base hit. Brandon Howlett was on base four times, going 1 for 2 with three walks and a pair of runs scored. Juan Carlos Abreu and Ricardo Cubillan turned in matching efforts out of the top two spots in the order, both going 2 for 4 with a walk and two runs scored apiece. Ryan Fernandez picked up his first pro win with a strong effort in relief, giving up just one hit in three scoreless innings while striking out six.

-----

DSL Dodgers Robinson 14, DSL Red Sox1 6
It was a rough afternoon for the Red Sox1 squad, but there were highlights on the offensive side. Leonel Jimenez had a big day, going 3 for 5 with a double, two RBI, and his 12th stolen base of the year. Carlos Sanchez, Wilker Vargas, and Lewis Baez each doubled as part of two-hit afternoons. It was the sixth double and 11th extra-base hit in 17 games for Baez.

-----

DSL Dodgers Guerrero 3, DSL Red Sox2 0
The other DSL team fell in the totally opposite way, turning in strong pitching performances but notching only three base hits. Bryan Lucas struck out five while giving up a pair of hits in two scoreless innings in his start. Robinson Parra was saddled with the loss in relief, despite giving up just one run on one hit in four innings of work. Parra struck out five and walked four. Richardson Jimenez struck out three in three innings, allowing two runs, both unearned.

-----

Player of they Day: It has been a season that has defied all conventional wisdom, as Bobby Dalbec continues to do Bobby Dalbec things at increasingly remarkaable paces. After setting the Salem franchise record in home runs in just four months, Dalbec has blasted four homers in six games since his promotion to Portland. His two homers give him 30 for the season, and 16 since June 29. To put that into perspective, his current teammate Michael Chavis led all Red Sox minor leaguers with 16 home runs for the entire 2016 season.

Tomberlin - "Any Other Way"      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Do you like sad girl songs? Then Sarah Beth Tomberlin, AKA Tomberlin, might be the new sad girl for you! Her debut album At Weddings comes out tomorrow from Saddle Creek records, and this is the video for one of the songs, "Any Other Way".

There are a few more songs from the album already up on Spotify and YouTube for you to check out, if you so desire.

The video for "Seventeen" is a little bit older, but I thought I'd include it if you dug the first one.

  • Tomberlin had a Baptist-minister father, was home-schooled and wasn't allowed to listen to secular music - she had to hide her Bright Eyes album.

  • Today, she lives in Louisville and works at a coffee house.

  • The album is mostly her voice, a guitar and a Wurlitzer. Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) sings backup and plays a couple instruments on one song.

  • Songs are personal, about relationships and connection and the difficulties of those things.

Shabazz Palaces, Stas THEE Boss
Ishmael Butler and Tendai Maraire of Seattle hip-hop duo Shabazz Palaces are masters of abstract texture and otherworldly sonic drift. On 2017’s Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star and Quazarz vs. the Jealous Machines, Butler trips through a world that has mistaken the map for the territory. When this strange dream of a universe clarifies and coheres, Butler can flip the modern nightmare into something sublime. CHRIS STAMM

Hop Along, Thin Lips
Hop Along dropped their fourth studio album Bark Your Head Off, Dog in April, and it delivers more of what fans have come to love about the Philadelphia indie rock titans: big hooks, lyrics that cut to the emotional core, and Frances Quinlan’s shapeshifting vocals, with the folksy addition of strings warming up the edges of the band’s heart-swelling anthems.

Stumptown Improv Festival
Stumptown Improv Festival is one of Portland’s best comedy festivals (maybe the best, but we don’t compare Hattori Hanzō swords). I’m continually impressed by the way the Stumptown team ups the ante each year, while keeping the energy high and their hearts pure. Celebrating its fifth year, Stumptown’s lineup looks appropriately awesome with the ridiculously good troupe White Women making their way up from LA and NY hip-hop group North Coast doing their own version of improv Hamilton (whaaat?). Corrina Repp, Luke Wyland
xIt took an ill-fated cross-country migration, a nomadic songwriting regimen in northern France, Los Angeles, and Louisville, Kentucky, and some intense introspection for Corrina Repp to come to terms with the pitfalls of failed romance. And on her fifth solo album, How a Fantasy Will Kills Us All, she bares the soul she took along for that journey. Engineered by Danny Seim of Menomena, the record bends and moans in all the right ways, utilizing loop-laced soundscapes as the bedrock for Repp’s beautifully resonant lyrics. With tinges of experimental folk and art-pop, grizzled ambient layers permeate the fringes of songs like “Need You/Don’t Need You” and the cathartic title track. Shades of Repp’s brilliant collaborative work with Joe Haege in the yesteryear Portland project Tu Fawning abound—a creative palette that suits Repp’s brooding lo-fi psych well. Rejoice in tonight’s record release show as Repp performs solo in the cozy confines of Beacon Sound. RYAN J. PRADO
8 pm, Beacon Sound, free

Jenn Champion, My Body, Briana Marela
Last month, Jenn Champion (the musician formerly known as S) dropped her new record Single Rider, which she wanted to be “a cross between Drake and Billy Joel.” Thankfully, it’s not—instead, Champion makes a screeching left turn away from the introspective pop-punk of S to turn her attention toward smooth, glimmering synth-pop made in collaboration with Seattle producer SYML. With echoing drum machine beats, airy vocals, and simple yet straightforward lyrics about the blurred line between infatuation and love, the album’s 13 tracks conjure strobe-lit dancefloors and drives along the coast at sunset with the windows down (especially standouts like “O.M.G. (I’m All Over It)” and “The Move”). CIARA DOLAN

Mondo Trasho: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The last great (ish) thing Terry Gilliam ever did, his adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's gonzo travelogue is probably the closest anyone ever got to lifting the lid on Thompson's dome and accurately portraying the nest of writhing, hyper-aggressive lizards screaming, shitting, and fucking behind his eyeballs. It's also one of the few movies about being fundamentally altered that works best while seen stone sober. Sure, people love getting ripped out of their fucking gourd and putting on the Johnny and Benicio show (btw: this is also probably the last great thing Depp ever did, too), but the real power of Gilliam's work is in how he manages to translate the feeling of Hunter's astronomical fucked-upitude to utterly straight, square minds. BOBBY ROBERTS
7:30 pm, Hollywood Theatre, $7-9

Beach House, Sound of Ceres
Since Victoria LeGrand first sang about “heartbreak and ponytails” over Alex Scally’s bewitching guitar tones on Beach House’s 2006 debut, the Baltimore duo has proven themselves to be masters of a new kind of woozy dream-pop. It hasn’t evolved too much since then, but that’s a good thing—the band’s new album 7 more or less follows the same formula, with warped electro-pop melodies floating behind LeGrand’s voice, which somehow always seems detached but intense.
8 pm, Keller Auditorium, $27.50-35, all ages

Usnea, Amarok, Hell

Death Grips - Year of the Snitch - Harvest Year of the Snitch is the sixth studio album by experimental hip hop group Death Grips , released this weekthrough Third Worlds and Harvest Records. LP and Indie Exclusive Clear LP to follow next month. Jason Mraz - Know. -Atlantic The album serves as a follow-up to the 2014 LP "YES!", and is Jason Mraz's first full-length studio recording in over four years. The bulk of the album was written against the backdrop of the 2016 Presidential election and its aftermath, and Mraz found himself writing a lot of "frustrated, angry, even sad songs, but nothing I wanted to sing." Instead he has chosen to convey an uplifting, positive message. Know. was produced by Andrew Wells, who brings an organic and groovy feel to the album's classic, acoustic rock sound.

Shooter Jennings - Shooter -Low Country Sound Ever the outlaw, Shooter Jennings has now crafted what might well be his most truly idiosyncratic work thus far, Shooter . Produced by longtime friend and collaborator, Low Country Sound founder Dave Cobb, at the renowned RCA Studio A on Nashville's Music Row, the album sees Jennings staking out a fairly straightforward goal: to simply make a great country record. It should be noted, Jennings' last studio album was a genuinely visionary tribute to Giorgio Moroder so in some ways, making a straight up country record is as much of a left turn as anything else in his brilliantly mercurial career thus far. But with songs like "Fast Horses & Good Hideouts" or the raucous "I'm Wild & My Woman Is Crazy," Jennings more than affirms his mission by returning to country's original, if oft misplaced, mandate: singing songs about growing up and getting older, about going out and getting trashed. In short, making music for real people with real lives. With SHOOTER, Jennings truly puts his own mark on country music, living up to his extraordinary birthright with unparalleled passion, experience, and heart. The Magpie Salute - High Water I - EagleRecords High Water I is the first album of original material from The Magpie Salute . The album, pressed on 2LP, is limited to 1,000 copies pressed on blue and white splattered vinyl. These colors will not be used on future pressings of High Water I. This is the story of The Magpie Salute. As much as the group represents a musical union of swaggering rock n roll, psychedelic blues, and campfire-worthy storytelling, it also marks a reunion of musicians whose paths twisted and turned right back to each other. Pulled together by guitarist Rich Robinson, it continued a storyline he began in the Black Crowes with guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Sven Pipien. Meanwhile, vocalist John Hogg shared Hookah Brown with Robinson as keyboardist Matt Slocum and drummer Joe Magistro both joined him for solo records and tours over the years. Jake Shears - Jake Shears -Freida Jean Records Showcasing the essence of what Jake Shears does best, the eponymously titled solo debut from the Scissor Sisters frontman is an album brimming with anthemic choruses and lyrics about the joys and vagaries of love and sex - all of it underpinned by a swampy soul influence imparted from his newly adopted hometown New Orleans. Shears' artistic vision blossomed in the epicenter of Southern decadence, where he had headed following the Scissors hiatus in 2012. Initial ideas for the album were mapped out at the city's famed Marigny Studios before he decamped to Louisville, KY to work with producer Kevin Ratterman (Ray LaMontagne, My Morning Jacket) who recruited members of My Morning Jacket, VHS or Beta, Jim James' solo band, and Floating Action to lay down the album's foundation. With string and brass arrangements by Christian Hebel (Barbra Streisand) and Lance Horne (Alan Cumming), they returned to NOLA to capture the city's signature sound with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Sturgill Simpson's brass section. The result is a thrilling work that plays inside some of the hallmarks of classic American rock music and marries them with Jake's inimitable point of view, humor, and gift for unforgettable hooks.

Think you're reading that list wrong. Louisville, Witchita and Anchorage don't have the lowest infection rates -- they have the 49th, 50th and 51st highest infections rate. The list only has the top 51 cities. Anchorage is still 18% ABOVE the average infection rate. Although it doesn't show the least infected cities, according to the text New York and San Francisco are near the bottom.

Ace started Ben VanSumeren's Hello post by saying his commitment was "about as Harbaugh as it gets," and he had no idea how correct this was. A subsequent Mick McCabe article is almost Beyond Harbaugh, describing a footbaw player who:

  • quit basketball because he has to go to bed at 9PM and "my body is my temple"
  • decided in fifth grade to be a football player and told no one
  • gets up at 5 AM to get in a lifting session and then lifts again after school
  • has slept with a football since he fumbled once in seventh grade

This is a man who can have hours-long conversations about milk with his head coach. I have no idea how it took so long for Michigan and VanSumeren to finally hook up. This is like when Dawson and Joey spent like FOREVER just circling each other you know what let's just move on.

VanSumeren committed to WMU early. After there wasn't much movement for a bit since small schools near Bay City aren't recruiting hotbeds. Then he put up some absurd numbers at an Opening regional:

At 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, he ran a 4.76 in the 40-yard dash. He ran 4.03 in the shuttle, the same time as the nation’s top overall tester Christian Morgan ran. He had over a 40-inch vertical.

Morgan is a safety headed to Baylor who was 20 pounds lighter than VanSumeren then; that vert is an inch off a national best; his overall SPARQ score of 127 is a few points short of the national leader, a 5'8" kid headed to Louisville. H-back and linebacker types never rank that high because only one of the four events—a powerball throw—is really up their alley. VanSumeren's numbers are truly absurd.

[After THE JUMP: brick body men still catch]

This turned heads and started gathering Big Ten offers; WMU got the bad news shortly after and he committed a while later to Iowa, as a linebacker. That's also where Notre Dame and Penn State were looking at him, and that makes sense because that's where brick-shaped people usually go. When he committed to Iowa Allen Trieu put out a video featuring VanSumeren clips interspersed with Iowa's entire starting LB corps that drove the point home:

But VanSumeren was a very weird brick-shaped football player in high school. VanSumeren was a wide receiver—more or less—for the bulk of his career. As a senior he racked up a state regular season record 85 catches despite playing quarterback for his first two (of nine) games. This is far out, man:

VanSumeren, who also earned his third selection to the MLive Bay City Dream Team, finished his prep career with 176 receptions for 2,888 yards and 29 touchdowns. He ranks fifth in state history for catches and sixth for receiving yardage.

Apparently Minnesota was offering at WR. That may be Fleck trying to differentiate Minnesota from Not Minnesota, but... I mean, I've seen Minnesota WRs. It makes sense.

Nobody else is projecting him there; at Michigan he'll be an "H", that spot halfway between fullback and tight end. His tape confirms that impression—VanSumeren is big and powerful and makes spectacular catches but very much looks like a FB/TE beasting on high school kids. That's just fine with him and his coach:

“I think his first love is on the offensive side. To me, that’s where he’s very gifted,” Coquillard explained. “It comes very naturally to him catching passes and using his frame to go up and grab balls from people. His route running is good. He has done a little bit of linebacker, not a ton, he hasn’t focused himself on that side of the ball, but it intrigues him.”

Analysts largely agreed with the above. Helmholdt mentioned his "great pair of hands" and "great body control" before warning that... changes to Michigan's offensive scheme could leave him without a position? Unless we suddenly find out that Zach Smith was employed by Michigan instead of Ohio State, that's an odd statement. Anyway, Trieu:

...4.76 forty at The Opening Regional in Cleveland was as fast or faster than some Big Ten skill position commits. He is physical, strong in the weight room, has good hands, and takes the game and weight room seriously. ...threat in the passing game out of the backfield on wheel routes and short swing passes where he should have more open-field ability than Michigan's recent fullbacks and H-backs.

In an interview for Webb, Trieu asserts that while Michigan's recent fullbacks are "good players" VanSumeren "gives you more upside":

“...exactly what you want in the position they’re going to play him ... 4.7 speed, catches the ball really well ... will absolutely knock your socks off if you see him on his highlight tape. So I think he is going to be an asset. ...really likes contact."

For his part, VanSumeren says that Michigan showed him a bunch of Hill film but he hopes to get the ball more because he "move[s] a little bit better" than Hill. Well then.

His coach went into the most detail:

“Coach Harbaugh couldn’t say enough about his body control. He’s got great body control when he catches the football and his hands are phenomenal too. When he runs with the ball, he’s got great body lean and gets his shoulders over his hips and runs with power. I mean he’s the complete package.”

“Offensively, he’s a special kid. ... He’s going to create some mismatches out in space with linebackers.”

The main note of concern is that VanSumeren is a bit of a tweener on offense; at 6'3" he's a short TE or a tall fullback. That might make his blocking less effective because it'll be tougher to get under the pads of his opposition. I think that's a minor concern given his defensive highlights; on a few tackles he explodes into his opposition from that coiled crouch not everyone can do naturally. TTTTBB:

...bit of a tweener when it comes to an offensive position; he’s somewhat short for a tight end and fairly tall for a fullback. Iowa had him pegged as a linebacker, which is where his physique would seem to fit best. He has good straight-line speed and some shake to him. He can high-point the football and shield the ball from defenders. The most important thing for him is probably that he’s a very physical player. He’s not afraid to hit, whether he’s blocking, taking on blockers, or running the ball.

His tape is very Conan Explains What Is Best In Life.

Michigan told VanSumeren he could expect 30 snaps a game this year, which probably includes special teams work. If not that's optimistic since Michigan has two returning tight ends, a senior slot receiver getting hyped up, and is set to shift to more of a spread look to accommodate Shea Patterson. Down the road he should be a red zone weapon.

Linebacker? Probably not. Iowa's system has been handed down from time immemorial to fit kids like VanSumeren; under Don Brown Michigan prefers the deranged squirrel variety of linebacker.

Etc.: Good MLive profile. Grew the Obligatory Fullback Mustache:

Van_Sumeren_Ben

Swole Johnny Depp says hi. Also here is a picture of a six year old Ben VanSumeren at a Michigan game:

6_7969017

This was in 2006, I have died.

Why Khalid Hill? VanSumeren projects as the kind of fullback you target on third and medium and in the redzone, which is the Hammering Panda role. Hill's on-field impact was somewhat muted because his conditioning consistently irritated the coaches but when called upon was able to pull the occasional wonky throw off his shoetops and also blast some defensive backs into the near future. VanSumeren is not likely to have any conditioning issues—his main issue is making sure his ligaments are cool with everything that's going on—and could end up being more of a feature guy in the offense.

Aaron Shea is the other blocky/catchy guy that's a good comparison; Shea was much more frequently targeted by Michigan quarterbacks and was very much a move TE instead of a fullback. That comparison is getting old and losing utility, though.

Guru Reliability: Low. Nobody cares about fullbacks.

Variance: Low. VanSumeren is listed at juuuust about college weight already on MGoBlue and is probably eating a skinless boneless chicken breast as we speak. Brine it! Salt ain't gonna hurt you. Please brine it. Slap some herbs on it. And feta. Feta doesn't have any carbs.

Ceiling: High-ish. Fullback, so isn't going in the first round of the draft, but does offer a skillset that is uncommon at the position and physical upside that is similarly uncommon.

General Excitement Level: High-ish. I mean, fullback, and a fullback taken one year after Michigan took Ben Mason. But if you're gonna take a fullback a guy who catches everything and puts up DB SPARQ scores is a good one.

Projection: Probably doesn't redshirt since he's more physically prepared than just about anyone in the class and should be immediately helpful on special teams. If Michigan does go super-gun-heavy with Patterson that might change the equation enough to preserve his potential fifth year in the new any-four-games-go environment.

Whether or not he gets the redshirt he's the Hill to Ben Mason's Poggi as long as they're both on campus, with VanSumeren getting a year or two at the end of his career to himself. Maybe. Possibly. I don't know. They'll probably recruit some guy named Kitchen Appliance Jones in a couple years.

This will be a very interesting recruiting class to revisit in a few years.  Rankings-wise, it's fairly underwhelming, but looking individually at these profiles you can see how the staff is assembling different pieces to fit overall team needs and roles. My guess is that we'll look back more fondly on the class than at the time it was signed.

I know this isn't a recruiting class we were all psyched about, but there are a lot of lower rated guy we have good reason to be excited about - Van Sumeren, Schoonmaker, Barrett, Welschoff, etc.  These aren't your typical "low rated guy." I'm not saying this makes the class a home run or anything, but that it mitigates some of the concern.

Would still have liked some DTs and WRs tho

I like the part of his film where he trucks the living hell out of some 160 pound kid. I wish his tape was five times longer than it is.

BJ Askew? I guess he was just a fat RB though.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It's almost six weeks until the elite 3-year-old racehorses charge down the track at Churchill Downs in this year's Kentucky Derby, but the trophy is already waiting on the winner. Marc Forbes of New England Sterling of Massachusetts delivered the trophy to the Louisville track on Monday. He says the 14-karat gold trophy takes about 2,000 man hours to create. The company has made the winner's trophy since 1975. Churchill Downs says work on the trophy begins in October before each year's Derby, with the target date for delivery in late March or early April. The trophy is being taken care of by the Kentucky Derby Museum and will be shown off at several events leading up to the Derby.
