          Re: Israel And Hamas Are On The Verge Of WAR As More Than 150 Rockets Rain Down On The Holy Land Overnight      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Hezbollah in Lebanon is a much worse threat to Israel; more rockets, more missiles, more fighters and they're dug in deep. Neither are they surrounded like Hamas in Gaza. Lots of money and support from Iran, including Iranian fighters inside Hezbollah.
Lebanon is a state held hostage by Hezbollah, and the Lebanese Army is as useless as the UN soldiers on the border; they're all afraid of Hezbollah, plus the population of south Lebanon is very supportive of Hezbollah.
There may be a combined attack on Israel from both Hamas and Hezbollah. I'd be watching my northern border and calling up reserves If I were Prime Minister. Israel will have to crush both of them militarily for good, and it will be a bloody and costly business. There is no negotiating with them, they're fanatics, a death cult. Prosperity for their people is not a priority. Revenge, murder and genocide is their agenda, just like ISIL. Ask them, they'll tell you.
Better for this to remain a frozen conflict, because if they keep shooting, it's going to all out war, and I'm a bit nervous as to what the Russians might do, especially their air power in Syria.

          Saudi Arabia picks a pointless fight with Canada      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

QUEBEC’S proudly Francophone separatists may want to learn some Arabic. On August 5th, as Canadians enjoyed a long weekend, Saudi Arabia abruptly expelled their ambassador and froze bilateral trade and investment. Its state-run funds have reportedly been ordered to dump their Canadian assets, no matter how much it costs to do so. The kingdom is angry about tweets from Canada’s foreign minister, Chrystia Freeland, criticising the arrests of Saudi human-rights activists. For Saudi Arabia, this was unacceptable “foreign interference”.

If anyone is qualified to opine on meddling abroad, it is the Saudis. Since 2011 they have helped quash an uprising in Bahrain, backed a coup in Egypt and detained Lebanon’s prime minister. If Canada keeps up its criticism, “we are allowed to interfere in Canada’s internal affairs,” the Saudi foreign ministry warned. Canadian diplomats joked about the kingdom arming Québécois rebels.

A legion of Saudis took to Twitter to voice their (no doubt long-held...

Morning Prayer for Saturday in Ordinary Time, for the Memorial of Saint Clare, Virgin

God, come to my assistance.
Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

HYMN

Your lamp of virtue, work and prayer,
O virgin, pleasing to the King,
Has won you favor in his sight,
Whose glory all the angels sing.

As chosen bride of Spouse divine,
The saints rejoice your face to see,
His love has kept you for his own,
By treasured grace of chastity.

Teach us to live true Christian lives
And help us with your fervent prayers
That we may val’antly resist
The wicked tempter’s evil snares.

True model of a virgin’s life,
May holy Mary beg her Son
To help us exiles here below
Until our course on earth is run.

All glory be to God on high,
Beyond the realms of time and space,
Who added to the bliss above
This virgin’s triumph won by grace. Amen.

PSALMODY

Ant. 1 As morning breaks we sing of your mercy, Lord, and night will find us proclaiming your fidelity.

Psalm 92
Praise of God the Creator

Sing in praise of Christ’s redeeming work (Saint Athanasius)

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to make music to your name, O Most High,
to proclaim your love in the morning
and your truth in the watches of the night,
on the ten-stringed lyre and the lute,
with the murmuring sound of the harp.

Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad;
for the work of your hands I shout with joy.
O Lord, how great are your works!
How deep are your designs!
The foolish man cannot know this
and the fool cannot understand.

Though the wicked spring up like grass
and all who do evil thrive:
they are doomed to be eternally destroyed.
But you, Lord, are eternally on high.
See how your enemies perish;
all doers of evil are scattered.

To me you give the wild-ox’s strength;
you anoint me with the purest oil.
My eyes looked in triumph on my foes;
my ears heard gladly of their fall.
The just will flourish like the palm-tree
and grow like a Lebanon cedar.

Planted in the house of the Lord
they will flourish in the courts of our God,
still bearing fruit when they are old,
still full of sap, still green,
to proclaim that the Lord is just;
In him, my rock, there is no wrong.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Psalm-prayer

Take our shame away from us, Lord, and make us rejoice in your saving works. May all who have been chosen by your Son always abound in works of faith, hope, and love in your service.

Ant. As morning breaks we sing of your mercy, Lord, and night will find us proclaiming your fidelity.

Ant.2 Extol the greatness of our God.

Canticle – Deuteronomy 32:1-12
God’s kindness to his people

How often have I longed to gather your children as a hen gathers her brood under her wing. (Matthew 23:37)

Give ear, O heavens, while I speak;
let the earth hearken to the words of my mouth!
May my instruction soak in like the rain,
and my discourse permeate like the dew,
Like a downpour upon the grass,
like a shower upon the crops:

For I will sing the Lord’s renown.
Oh, proclaim the greatness of our God!
The Rock – how faultless are his deeds,
how right all his ways!
A faithful God, without deceit,
how just and upright he is!

Yet basely has he been treated by his degenerate children,
a perverse and crooked race!
Is the Lord to be thus repaid by you,
O stupid and foolish people?
Is he not your father who created you?
Has he not made you and established you?

Think back on the days of old,
reflect on the years of age upon age.
Ask your father and he will inform you,
ask your elders and they will tell you:

When the Most High assigned the nations their heritage,
when he parceled out the descendants of Adam,
He set up the boundaries of the peoples
after the number of the sons of God;
While the Lord’s own portion was Jacob,
His hereditary share was Israel.

He found them in a wilderness,
a wasteland of howling desert.
He shielded them and cared for them,
guarding them as the apple of his eye.

As an eagle incites its nestlings forth
by hovering over its brood,
So he spread his wings to receive them
and bore them up on his pinions.
The Lord alone was their leader,
no strange god was with him.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Ant. Extol the greatness of our God.

Ant. 3 How wonderful is your name, O Lord, in all creation.

Psalm 8
Praise for God’s loving compassion

I affirm that… the Gentile peoples are to praise God because of his mercy (Romans 15:8-9)

How great is your name, O Lord our God,
through all the earth!

Your majesty is praised above the heavens;
on the lips of children and of babes
you have found praise to foil your enemy,
to silence the foe and the rebel.

When I see the heavens, the work of your hands,
the moon and the stars which you arranged,
what is man that you should keep him in mind,
mortal man that you care for him?

Yet you have made him little less than a god;
with glory and honor you crowned him,
gave him power over the works of your hands,
put all things under his feet.

All of them, sheep and cattle,
yes, even the savage beasts,
birds of the air, and fish
that make their way through the waters.

How great is your name, O Lord our God
through all the earth!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Psalm-prayer

Almighty Lord, how wonderful is your name. You have made every creature subject to you; make us worthy to give you service.

Ant. How wonderful is your name, O Lord, in all creation.

READING Song of Songs 8:7

Deep waters cannot quench love,
nor floods sweep it away.
Were one to offer all he owns to purchase love,
he would be roundly mocked.

Sacred Silence (indicated by a bell) – a moment to reflect and receive in our hearts the full resonance of the voice of the Holy Spirit and to unite our personal prayer more closely with the word of God and public voice of the Church.

RESPONSORY

My heart is ever pleading, show me your face.
My heart is ever pleading, show me your face.

I long to gaze upon you, Lord.
Show me your face.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
My heart is ever pleading, show me your face.

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Ant. Now this wise virgin has gone to Christ. Among the choirs of virgins she is radiant as the sun in the heavens.

Luke 1:68-79
The Messiah and his forerunner

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,
born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old
that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
to give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Ant. Now this wise virgin has gone to Christ. Among the choirs of virgins she is radiant as the sun in the heavens.

INTERCESSIONS

Christ is the spouse and crowning glory of virgins: let us praise him with joy in our voices and pray to him with sincerity in our hearts.
Jesus, crown of virgins, hear us.

Christ, the holy virgins loved you as their one true spouse:
grant that nothing may separate us from your love.
Jesus, crown of virgins, hear us.

You crowned Mary, your mother, queen of virgins:
through her intercession, let us continually serve you with pure hearts.
Jesus, crown of virgins, hear us.

Your handmaidens were always careful to love you with whole and undivided attention, that they might be holy in body and spirit:
through their intercession grant that the lure of this passing world may not distract our attention from you.
Jesus, crown of virgins, hear us.

Lord Jesus, you are the spouse whose coming was anticipated by the wise virgins:
grant that we may wait for you in hope and expectation.
Jesus, crown of virgins, hear us.

Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Concluding Prayer

O God,
who in your mercy
led Saint Clare to a love of poverty,
grant, through her intercession, that,
following Christ in poverty of spirit,
we may merit to contemplate you
one day in the heavenly Kingdom.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

DISMISSAL

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.

 Super fun play day pony! Poppy is a 10 yr old 12ish hand paint pony mare. Very easy to catch and handle. Loves to be loved on. She Rides and Drives! She loves to have a job, loves jumping and pulling the cart. Is a super cute cart pony. Gets along with great with others in the pasture. Good in a stall. Rides English/Western/bareback. You point and she goes. She isn't afraid of much. Did pony rides for a year or so. She does have a motor on her but you can put little kids on and lead her around. Comes running when you call. Stand to be brushed, bridled, saddled, bathed, mounted and for her feet being trimmed. Loves to trail ride. Goes over bridges, tarps, logs, and water. Trailers good. She would be good for an intermediate rider, as some times she will bunny hop going into the lope if she has alot of energy. She is a super fun pony who needs a child to love her and give her attention. Up-to-date on rabies, coggins, deworming, and feet being trimmed. Located in Lebanon Pa 1600 https://youtu.be/rgZb0p2Aqc

          Laura Ingraham Fears White Genocide      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
There are few things that are more of a bitch-ass argument than the whole "white genocide" thing that racists have been screeching about. The idea isn't that there will be concentration camps of white people being exterminated by legions of blacks and Hispanics and Asians and other scary non-white groups. Oh, no. See, white genocide is a gradual process by which a combination of demographic changes, migration, and white people not having babies will eradicate whiteness, causing white culture and beliefs and whatnot to disappear. See, it's like a genocide except no one is watching their family get mutilated by machetes or sent into gas showers. So it's not like a genocide at all save for in the delusional minds of white supremacists who don't fucking get that their whiteness is a construction of so many non-white forces that they wouldn't have a culture without it.

Grow the fuck up, you pussies. This is what happens. Populations move. People fuck people of other races. That shit just happens. Look at Mexico. Not because of undocumented migrants, but because of how it dealt with an influx of another race. You know that there are over a million people of Arab descent in Mexico? No, you didn't fucking know that, you stupid assholes. A whole bunch of them are Lebanese. Did you know that? No, you didn't fucking know that because you're a dumb fuck racist fuckball. And you know why you don't hear about it? Because the people from Lebanon and Yemen and Syria and elsewhere who moved to Mexico in the 1930s and 1940s married Mexicans and they have Arab Mexican kids and that's the way shit goes, man, and no one gives a single goddamn about it anymore. The best kibbeh I ever had was in Merida, Yucatan, and it was made by the Mexican wife of a Lebanese friend. How fucking great is that? The world's a goddamn miracle when you're not a total dick about shit like this.

Which gets us to Fox "news" host and noted Nazi saluter Laura Ingraham, who, you may have heard, went off about shifting racial populations in the United States last night on her show, The Ingrown Toenail. You've likely seen this quote, which sounds like something you hear before a cross is set on fire: "[I]n some parts of the country it does seem like the America that we know and love doesn't exist anymore. Massive demographic changes have been foisted upon the American people. And they are changes that none of us ever voted for and most of us don't like." Does anyone vote for demographic change? How would that work? I guess she supports keeping black people out of her neighborhood. Anyways, Ingraham had been mocking Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the self-professed socialist who won the Democratic nomination for Congress in a district in New York City.

But you may not have heard the other shit Ingraham said during her xenophobic rant last night. She continued, "From Virginia to California, we see stark examples of how radically in some ways the country has changed. Now, much of this is related to both illegal and in some cases legal immigration that of course progressives love." Then, after getting in the usual shots at undocumented migrants and bringing up the scary ones who committed crimes and scary sanctuary cities (also known as "cities"), Ingraham got to her real fear, which is not crime at all: "[T]his is a sure way over time to remake and reshape America. This is exactly what socialists like Ocasio-Cortez want. Eventually diluting and overwhelming your vote with the votes of others who aren't, let's face it, too big on Adam Smith and the Federalist Papers."

Oh, Laura, c'mon. You really think your viewers know jack shit about Adam Smith and the Federalist Papers (which, by the way, great name for a terrible band)? Most of them wouldn't know The Wealth of Nations if Smith himself was whispering it in their ears as he made sweet, sweaty love to them, fucking them in the ass while watching your show.

More important than the stupidity and pliable sphincter of the average Ingraham viewer is that Ingraham is using the threat of non-white immigrants voting in order to demonize those immigrants even more than crime and job-taking might. She's saying, "Understand this, my fellow racist shitheels. They will elect people with scary names like Ocasio-Cortez and then they will pass laws that will strip your whiteness of its privilege."

Isn't that what this all really is about? The gut-wrenching fear that whiteness won't be powerful in and of itself? Or maybe it's just that there are a bunch of white people who are scared shitless that they might get treated like they've treated non-white people for centuries.

Demographic changes are gonna happen. The pure white Aryan blood will become "diluted" (which is an interesting dog-whistle of a word). Wait until climate refugees start pouring into the country, along with the economic migrants and asylum seekers from increasingly violent places. The most hilarious, fucked up part of all this is that the way that the cowardly white conservatives could have kept the nation whiter would have been to help the rest of the world with economic incentives, climate action, and more. But it's too late now, you pasty motherfuckers. You shouldn't have been listening to people like Laura Ingraham all this time.

That said, this is the country we have. We're not going back. No matter how many immigrants the Trump administration gets rid of, the demographic shift is here, man. This is the America we have. I love it. I love this crazy richness of identities. It's fucking fascinating and fucking fun. Bring on the white genocide. It sounds like a party.

You don't like it? Well, there's always Russia.

First Psalm: Psalm 88

Psalm 88 (Listen)

I Cry Out Day and Night Before You

A Song. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. To the choirmaster: according to Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil1 of Heman the Ezrahite.

88   O LORD, God of my salvation,
    I cry out day and night before you.
  Let my prayer come before you;
    incline your ear to my cry!
  For my soul is full of troubles,
    and my life draws near to Sheol.
  I am counted among those who go down to the pit;
    I am a man who has no strength,
  like one set loose among the dead,
    like the slain that lie in the grave,
  like those whom you remember no more,
    for they are cut off from your hand.
  You have put me in the depths of the pit,
    in the regions dark and deep.
  Your wrath lies heavy upon me,
    and you overwhelm me with all your waves. Selah
  You have caused my companions to shun me;
    you have made me a horror2 to them.
  I am shut in so that I cannot escape;
    my eye grows dim through sorrow.
  Every day I call upon you, O LORD;
    I spread out my hands to you.
10   Do you work wonders for the dead?
    Do the departed rise up to praise you? Selah
11   Is your steadfast love declared in the grave,
    or your faithfulness in Abaddon?
12   Are your wonders known in the darkness,
    or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
13   But I, O LORD, cry to you;
    in the morning my prayer comes before you.
14   O LORD, why do you cast my soul away?
    Why do you hide your face from me?
15   Afflicted and close to death from my youth up,
    I suffer your terrors; I am helpless.3
16   Your wrath has swept over me;
    your dreadful assaults destroy me.
17   They surround me like a flood all day long;
    they close in on me together.
18   You have caused my beloved and my friend to shun me;
    my companions have become darkness.4

Second Psalm: Psalms 91–92

Psalms 91–92 (Listen)

My Refuge and My Fortress

91   He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
  I will say1 to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.”
  For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
    and from the deadly pestilence.
  He will cover you with his pinions,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
  You will not fear the terror of the night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
  nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
    nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.
  A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
  You will only look with your eyes
    and see the recompense of the wicked.
  Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place—
    the Most High, who is my refuge2
10   no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
    no plague come near your tent.
11   For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways.
12   On their hands they will bear you up,
    lest you strike your foot against a stone.
13   You will tread on the lion and the adder;
    the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
14   “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
    I will protect him, because he knows my name.
15   When he calls to me, I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble;
    I will rescue him and honor him.
16   With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.”

How Great Are Your Works

A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath.

92   It is good to give thanks to the LORD,
    to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
  to declare your steadfast love in the morning,
    and your faithfulness by night,
  to the music of the lute and the harp,
    to the melody of the lyre.
  For you, O LORD, have made me glad by your work;
    at the works of your hands I sing for joy.
  How great are your works, O LORD!
    Your thoughts are very deep!
  The stupid man cannot know;
    the fool cannot understand this:
  that though the wicked sprout like grass
    and all evildoers flourish,
  they are doomed to destruction forever;
    but you, O LORD, are on high forever.
  For behold, your enemies, O LORD,
    for behold, your enemies shall perish;
    all evildoers shall be scattered.
10   But you have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox;
    you have poured over me3 fresh oil.
11   My eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies;
    my ears have heard the doom of my evil assailants.
12   The righteous flourish like the palm tree
    and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
13   They are planted in the house of the LORD;
    they flourish in the courts of our God.
14   They still bear fruit in old age;
    they are ever full of sap and green,
15   to declare that the LORD is upright;
    he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

Old Testament: Judges 9:1–16; Judges 9:19–21

Judges 9:1–16 (Listen)

Abimelech's Conspiracy

Now Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother's relatives and said to them and to the whole clan of his mother's family, “Say in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you, that all seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.”

And his mother's relatives spoke all these words on his behalf in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.” And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows, who followed him. And he went to his father's house at Ophrah and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself. And all the leaders of Shechem came together, and all Beth-millo, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar at Shechem.

When it was told to Jotham, he went and stood on top of Mount Gerizim and cried aloud and said to them, “Listen to me, you leaders of Shechem, that God may listen to you. The trees once went out to anoint a king over them, and they said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’ But the olive tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my abundance, by which gods and men are honored, and go hold sway over the trees?’ 10 And the trees said to the fig tree, ‘You come and reign over us.’ 11 But the fig tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my sweetness and my good fruit and go hold sway over the trees?’ 12 And the trees said to the vine, ‘You come and reign over us.’ 13 But the vine said to them, ‘Shall I leave my wine that cheers God and men and go hold sway over the trees?’ 14 Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘You come and reign over us.’ 15 And the bramble said to the trees, ‘If in good faith you are anointing me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade, but if not, let fire come out of the bramble and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’

16 “Now therefore, if you acted in good faith and integrity when you made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house and have done to him as his deeds deserved—

(ESV)

Judges 9:19–21 (Listen)

19 if you then have acted in good faith and integrity with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you. 20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and devour the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo; and let fire come out from the leaders of Shechem and from Beth-millo and devour Abimelech.” 21 And Jotham ran away and fled and went to Beer and lived there, because of Abimelech his brother.

New Testament: Acts 4:13–31

Acts 4:13–31 (Listen)

13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. 14 But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. 15 But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, 16 saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17 But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.” 18 So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, 20 for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” 21 And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened. 22 For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old.

The Believers Pray for Boldness

23 When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, 25 who through the mouth of our father David, your servant,1 said by the Holy Spirit,

  “‘Why did the Gentiles rage,
    and the peoples plot in vain?
26   The kings of the earth set themselves,
    and the rulers were gathered together,
    against the Lord and against his Anointed’2

27 for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. 29 And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, 30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” 31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

Gospel: John 2:1–12

John 2:1–12 (Listen)

The Wedding at Cana

On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.1 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers2 and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.

          Worse than 'Fake News': The Forced Conformity of the Media!      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Helga Zepp-LaRouche giving an interview to an independent news media organization after the Schiller Institute's conference in early summer 2018. (Photo: Michelle Rasmussen / EIRNS)

by Helga Zepp-LaRouche, Chairwoman of the German political party BüSo, the Civil Rights Solidarity Party. You can follow Helga on twitter @ZeppLaRouche.

The following is an English translation of an article appearing in the German newspaper, Neue Solidarität.

Aug. 4—We should have learned from the 1920s and 1930s that the spread of cultural pessimism throughout the population has fatal consequences. But such pessimism is spreading today in many Western societies, and especially in Germany, in the face of uncertain future options, with the result that more and more citizens have completely given up the hope of being able to make a difference through their own participation, or they are joining right-wing parties that provide an outlet for anger but offer no solutions. The culprit in this development is not least the political establishment, which leads us to accept a “TINA” politics—TINA is the acronym for “there is no alternative”—and the forced conformity of the mainstream media, which suppress all messages that point to alternatives.

We are living through what is probably the greatest strategic change of all time. Under the leadership of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), the majority of the developing countries are currently focussing on close win-win cooperation, with the aim of achieving the leap to the status of industrialized nations, and a good standard of living for their entire populations as quickly as possible. The 10th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg July 25-27 included some of the largest and most important international organizations of developing countries, such as the Group of 77, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Mercosur, and the African Union, which were there to join forces with the BRICS in what might be called the Global South initiative.

The New Silk Road is Changing Everything

China’s Belt and Road Initiative, and the idea that relations are no longer based on geopolitical confrontation but on mutual benefit, have changed the political climate in many regions of the world in a completely positive way. For example, the election victory of newly designated Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has created for the first time the potential to settle the conflict between India and Pakistan. Khan promised to ensure that his country takes two steps toward India for every step that India takes towards Pakistan. The cooperation between the BRICS countries also has its impact on Pakistan; China has traditionally good relations with Pakistan, and just now the Russian and Pakistani navies had a high-level meeting, after the first-ever joint manoeuvres of Russian and Pakistani ground troops took place just one year ago.

The Horn of Africa is also embraced by the new spirit of cooperation. There the hitherto mutually hostile states of Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea and Ethiopia are massively expanding their mutual diplomatic and economic relations, largely thanks to Chinese investment, such as in the construction of the railway from Djibouti to Addis Abeba.

And, in contrast to the consistently negative media coverage of the progress of negotiations between North and South Korea and the United States, this process is on a good track, with the option that a leading North Korean government official may speak in New York before the upcoming UN General Assembly in September.

Meanwhile, the Syrian government has begun the economic reconstruction of the province of Aleppo. The first part of a three-phase program is the reconstruction of the infrastructure, the second step is the specific provisioning of each individual family, and the third phase is the return of people to a safe environment, as the Deputy Governor of the province, Hamid Kenno, stressed. At the same time, the Russian military has helped create a refugee center in Syria that will welcome refugees returning from Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey, and assist them in their return to their homes. An inter-ministerial coordination committee of the Russian Foreign and Defense Ministries has taken over the orderly repatriation of the refugees.

One might assume that these developments would dominate headlines, immediately bringing hope to all clear-thinking people that world peace has become more secure, poverty can be overcome, and the refugee crisis can be resolved in a human way. Instead, the media do not say a word about the “Global South” initiative. An article in the German national daily, Die Welt, furnished with much geopolitical spin, cites Xi Jinping’s speech at the BRICS Summit: “Africa has more development potential than any other region in the world.” And what does the author conclude? That “China is working to build its empire” and the upcoming summit between China and the African nations in Beijing this September is just Xi Jinping’s “charm offensive.”

Of course, this censorship of good news has the purpose of depicting the politics of the old neo-liberal paradigm as having no alternative. If China—incidentally, along with India, Russia and Japan—now demonstrates that Africa can indeed be industrialized, and if that were truthfully reported, then someone might think to ask why the African continent, after centuries of colonialism and decades of the IMF’s notorious credit conditionalities, is in its current precarious state, and whether this is not a major cause of the refugee crisis.

Instead of responding to China’s repeated offer to work together with the African states on their industrialization in the context of the New Silk Road, the German government is blocking Chinese investments in Germany, such as the recent acquisition of the precision machinery manufacturer Leifeld Metal Spinning, although various surveys confirm that Chinese investors have always taken care to increase the number of jobs and raise wages. Where was the government’s veto when, in recent years, dozens of American and British hedge funds have taken everything from mid-sized companies to housing companies and infrastructure, carved out the choicest portions to sell, and closed down the rest as socially unacceptable?

It is an absurd idea to think that one could halt the rise of emerging and developing countries—India and China alone account for 2.6 billion people—and impose the neo-liberal model of geopolitics as the only possible option on the rest of the world. Blair’s and Obama’s policies of converting the whole world to Western democracy through regime change and “humanitarian” interventions, as a sort of modern crusade, have clearly failed. Neither China nor Russia wants this model, and more and more developing countries see the Chinese model as the model for their own development.

The reason is that the BRICS offer a form of cooperation that focuses on mutual development, while “the West” prefers the neo-liberal model of profit maximization for the few at the expense of the many. It is also not overlooked in the rest of the world that the EU is slipping into more and more disagreement between its member states, whether in dealing with the refugee crisis; in choosing between greater integration versus emphasis on sovereignty; or in relations with China, Russia and the United States.

Looking at the world through Eurocentric glasses obscures the view that the greater part of humanity, represented by the BRICS and Global South, has drawn from the neo-liberal policies of the West the conclusion that a revision of the current system of global governance is urgently needed, and that this reorganization cannot be left to the West.

Instead of arrogantly continuing to sit on the high horse of egoism in their supposed superiority and soon landing their own populations on the margins of history, the nations of Europe, and the United States, should look to the offers from China and Russia for cooperation and co-creation of the New Paradigm. Despite the punitive tariffs imposed by Trump, China continues to offer cooperation with the United States in order to overcome the trade deficit through joint ventures in third countries. A spokeswoman for China’s Ministry of Commerce has just said, “We always believe that bad things can be turned into good ones and challenges can be turned into opportunities.”

And at the just-ended ASEAN Summit in Singapore, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov recalled Putin’s words at the 2016 Russia-ASEAN Summit in Sochi, where he called on partner-countries to be aware of the huge geopolitical and geo-economic potential of the Eurasian continent, where the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the Shanghai Corporation Organization (SCO) and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) complement each other. Lavrov stressed that the door remains open to the EU, and no one should doubt that the EU should be interested in it purely for pragmatic economic and business interests.

But one could also find reasons for such cooperation that go beyond the pragmatic. If Europe does not want to completely forget, and lose, its humanistic and classical culture, then we could revive the ideas of Nicholas of Cusa, Leibniz and Schiller, and make our contribution to the development of humanity. You certainly will not read about it in the mainstream media. But you can read it here.

MANSFIELD, PA (July 2018) First Citizens recently promoted Wendy Southard to the position of Information Security Officer, Rob Dewater to the position of VP, Electronic Banking Manager and hired Keith Sampsell as the VP, Technology Infrastructure Manager. These new positions have been created to fortify the Banks’ Information Technology efforts to support their growth and security strategies for the future.
Wendy Southard first joined the Bank in 1991 and spent 25 years supporting the bank’s Marketing Department; first as Marketing Secretary and ending her service there as AVP and Marketing Officer. In 2016, Southard was promoted to Professional Development Officer responsible for training and development of the staff and was recently selected for the Information Security Officer position based on her experience, understanding of banking regulations and innate ability to recognize potential problems.

“In a world where cybercrime is the leading form of crime, the threat is incredibly serious—and growing,” commented Randall E. Black, CEO and President. “Cybercriminals are depending on a lack of knowledge and the absence of checks and balances to perpetrate fraud such as identify-theft, malware attacks, spam, phishing, and social engineering. The addition of Wendy to the team is another example of our continued efforts to protect our customers.”

Rob Dewater started his career with First Citizens in 1998 as Computer Operator, and was promoted to Information Processing Supervisor in 2002. In 2014, Dewater was promoted to Assistant Vice President. Now, in his new position as VP, Electronic Banking Manager, he will focus on the development, support, and risk management of First Citizens electronic banking initiatives including online banking, cash management, remote deposit capture, mobile banking, lockbox, ATMs, and any new electronic delivery products or services that will arise. He will also continue to manage the Item Processing system and Proof/Mailroom team.

Both Southard and Dewater have been named Employee of the Year during their tenure with the Bank.

Keith Sampsell joined the First Citizens team in July as VP, Technology Infrastructure Manager. Sampsell’s primary responsibility will be overseeing the Bank’s core system and their network infrastructure. Prior to joining First Citizens, he worked at Jersey Shore State Bank in various technical roles, and was responsible for maintaining their core system along with administering the IT infrastructure. He has also worked as a Network Systems Specialist and Systems Administrator at Penn State University. Sampsell earned a B.S. Degree in Computer Information Technology with a Network Specialist Emphasis from Pennsylvania College of Technology.

“The importance of growing our digital strategy and information technology initiatives can never be understated,” noted Black. “We’re fortunate to have such skilled individuals help us as we tackle future information technology challenges and expansion.”

          Correspondence of The Cincinnati Gazette 27 May 1859      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

When Horace Mann corresponded with The Cincinnati Gazette in May 1859, Antioch College was experiencing one of its more notable financial meltdowns, the details of which Mann lays out fairly clearly in his opening paragraphs. As with his presidency, Mann’s letter addresses perceived slights with far more precision and alacrity than the money problems that had people at each other's throats, a standard criticism of his tenure both in his time and by history. The slights in question were leveled by William Mills, the “Yellow Springs Man” who had wrested Antioch from Lebanon, Ohio (the complainant featured in the last installment of Stacks) in 1852.

By 1859 Mills’ reputation was in tatters much like his fortune, which had diminished steadily since the Panic of 1857, and he was facing bankruptcy. The College he’d had no small hand in realizing was in much the same state, having recently been auctioned for its considerable debts, though the winning bid had come from a member of the Antioch Board of Trustees, New York banker Francis A. Palmer. Now saved from itself, Antioch was reincorporated in part to protect it from the future claims of creditors, much to Mills’ consternation, which he expressed liberally in the newspapers. Considering the sale of the College fraudulent and its creditors cheated, in the May 25 issue of The Xenia Torch Light he wrote: “Antioch is falsely proclaimed free...such then are the auspices and position of the President under which the new organization flings its banner to the world, as a free, liberal and christian institution; and as is often the case, where a great wrong has been perpetuated, the holy offices of religion are invoked.”

Never one to let such remarks go unaddressed, here Mann escalates the battle of words into a war that would continue through one of the hottest summers ever recorded in Ohio.

ANTIOCH COLLEGE

Correspondence of The Cincinnati Gazette

Yellow Springs, May 27, 1859

    A card signed by Mr. William Mills of Yellow Springs, and impugning the honor and good faith of some of the persons who have contributed to the recent purchase and reorganisation of Antioch College, seems to demand an answer, that the public may be disabused of the errors into which that article may have led them. While I reply to what the paper alleges and implies, I hope to avoid imitating its spirit.

    In June, 1857, the Trustees of Antioch College assigned its property for the benefit of its creditors, the institution being then in a hopelessly insolvent condition. The assignee was F.A. Palmer, esq. of New York City. It was hoped, however, that before the property should be sold, the friends of the College would raise sufficient money to purchase it. Accordingly a Convention was held at Franklin, Ohio, which organized measures for this purpose. At a later period, an important modification or addition was made to the plan. By this it was proposed, not only to raise money enough to buy the College, but enough also to pay all its debts. To accomplish this enlarged object, no amount of diligence, effort or expense has been spared. Public meetings have been held, cities have been canvassed, pamphlets published, not less than eighteen Journeys, from west to east, or from east to west, have been made for this sole purpose, all at private expense. If the time bestowed on. this object, by men otherwise full of business, could be aggregated into one period, it would not amount to less than a decade of years. And to show not only the zeal but the success of the effort, actual bona fide subscriptions were obtained to the amount of more than $80,000.

    In the mean time, the largest creditor of the College—the Connecticut Insurance Company—obtained judgment against the College, and an order for Its sale. Every party adversely interested knew all these facts. Mr. Harlan, President of the Board of Trustees, and one of the parties liable (if any are so), gave his official concurrence to every step that required it.

    Previous to the sale, the College property must be appraised, and, before the new charter, it had to be appraised again—two appraisements, with only a few days between them.   Both sets of appraisers were fair, substantial men, against whom no word of exception, so far as I know, has ever been taken. The first set appraised it at $60,000; the second at less. Mr. Mills remarks that the property had been appraised previously at $138,000. That, however, was years ago, and the appraisement was made, as it then of course should have been, with reference to cost and general value. The last two appraisements were made with reference to present cash value. Considering the shrinkage and collapse of real estate in this place, the estimates were much alike.

    On the 19th of April last, the representatives of donors and laborers in this cause assembled here. Our Eastern friends brought more than forty thousand dollars in cash. This was as much as intelligent men then supposed the College would sell for. Had any disposition existed to wrong any man—any desire not to be generous, and not to pay off the liabilities of the old College, and release its sureties, here certainly was ample chance to exercise it.   But what was done?

    More than $21,000, raised at the West, had been placed in my hands as Trustee. This $21,000 was raised to meet a claim on which Mr. Mills and others were liable. The trust deed had been drawn by counsel the preceding year; but when it came to be examined under the new state of facts which had intervened, it was found that not one of its conditions had been fulfilled, and no signer was bound by it. Nor were these failures matters of form only—they were matters of substance. But what did the contributors do? Repudiate it and leave him, and them to pay it? No! With the exception of three contributors, whose joint donations amounted to but $2,000, the performance of the conditions was waived, and only one of the former conditions retained, namely: That the old College property should be conveyed to and held by the new corporation. Thus, after the $21,000 had been conditionally promised, and through failure of the conditions had come back into our hands, it was re-pledged for the relief of Mr. Mills and his compromisers.

    Does this look like “treachery”, or “fraud”, or “pledges broken”. or “assurance falsified”, or “confidence misplaced”?

    In one respect, and in one respect alone, the plan failed. Beside the $21,000 of which I was the trustee, our able and faithful agents, Messrs. Fay and McWhinney, had obtained bona fide subscriptions at the West for from $15,000 to $20,000 more. But by a non-performance of conditions as to time, these subscribers were discharged. Most of them declined to pay, and less than $4,000 were collected from the whole. It is not these, however, whose good faith Mr. Mills impugnes; but the faith of those who did waive conditions under which they were equally protected. Of all these facts he was as well informed as any one.

    At this juncture the sale was made—a fair, open, public sale. Weeks before, Mr. Palmer had written to Mr. Mills, Mr. Harlan and others, to produce their highest bidder at the sale. The friends of the College not being able to bid enough for the property to liquidate all the debts, and no other bidder, appearing, Mr. Palmer, with a view to securing his own claim, became the purchaser, at $40,000. Upon subsequent consultation, however, Mr. Palmer agreed to transfer his purchase to those friends representing the collected funds, provided they would exert themselves to remunerate him as far as possible for his loss. Mr. E.M. Birch of Yellow Springs, who had promised to give land to the new corporation, certainly worth $4,000, perhaps worth $10,000, transferred this gift to Mr. Palmer. Individual a in other States had also pledged themselves to obtain not less than $4,000 for the new College. This also was diverted from it a intended channel and devoted to the payment of debts. Some College professors waived claims for debts due, and all this to help pay the indebtedness of the old College, although it had been already purchased. With this assistance it was understood that Mr. Palmer would assume the residue of the debts—at least to the amount of the $15,000 raised in New-York. There was still some indebtedness left, consisting of legal expenses, &c. This, I say, was the understanding of Dr. Bellows and Mr. Butler of New-York, Mr. Quincy of Boston, Mr. Carter of Chicago, Mr. Partridge of St. Louis, Mr. Fay, Mr. Weston and myself of this place. That this was the understanding of Dr. Bellows and Mr. Weston is proved by their public statements since made.

    But, surely, no supposed or real failure on the part of any one individual justifies general charges of “treachery” or “fraud”, or other dishonour. I may add, further, that while Mr. Mills was pondering these very charges of “fraud”, “pledges broken”, &c, Dr. Bellows in New-York and Mr. Fay and I in this place, were doing all we could to change Mr. Palmer’s stand point, and to induce him to release Mr. Mills and his co-sureties.   I cannot but believe that when Mr. Mills sees these facts in their true light he will regret the sweeping imputations of his article.

    One other point, though somewhat of a personal nature, is too important to be omitted.   The Faculty and teachers of the College are to-day its creditors to the amount of more than $10,000. The students stood nobly and confidingly by the College through all its dark scenes of pecuniary, adversity, and we, though on bread-and-water allowance of salary, stood by them.   Mr. Birch's donation, and the others above referred to, would have placed us on a better footing. The Faculty and teachers surrendered their chance of being reimbursed from these, that the avails might go toward the payment of the remaining debts supposed to have been assumed by Mr. Palmer. If either party had Just cause for objecting to the Jubilee, was it Mr. Mills or the Faculty?

    But the Faculty appointed the Jubilee, their own loss notwithstanding. Nor did they fail on that occasion to express their regrets that, first, on account of the failure of the Western subscription, and, second, on account of their disappointment in regard to Mr. Palmer, every honest debt of the old College was not on that day satisfied.

    And more: Mr. Mills, on the day of the Jubilee, authorised Mr. Fay to assure students and audience that he (Mr. Mills entertained no unkind feelings toward any one except Mr. Palmer; that he entirely exculpated every one else, naming especially the President of the College. It is true that, after Mr. Fay had ascended the rostrum, he received a note from Mr. Mills, requesting him to withhold what he had before authorised him to say; but his reasons for withdrawing the permission were prudential only, not implying any change of sentiments toward the parties. And on the grounds, Dr. Warriner, an inmate of Mr. Mills’s family, affirmed, as explicitly as language can affirm anything, that Mr. Mills reproached or accused no one but Mr. Palmer; that he exonerated the President from all blame, and that Mr. Mills had said so to him. Dr. Warriner did not say this by “authority”, but of Me own knowledge. And how could Mr. Mills, as an honorable man, feel otherwise than as he authorized Mr. Fay to express, and as Dr. Warriner did express, toward those parties who, for the past year, had labored to produce a result which, if it had not freed him from all his liabilities, had certainly freed him from $27,000 of them, and promised to free him from about $21,000 more

    Mr. Mills says that the President, at the Jubilee, “felicitated himself and all sympathizers that the sale took place according to law, and ridiculed the idea that any one could now disturb their title, and cast reproach upon all who would complain or seek to interfere with their possession thus acquired.”

    The facts are these. After the Jubilee was appointed, and our faithful band of students was assured that at last they had found an educational home, a formidable effort was made to shake their confidence, after all, in the permanence of the institution. They were told that the sale could be annulled, &c. To stifle this alarm, the Faculty authorized and requested the President to make a statement in their behalf in regard to the perpetuity and impregnability of the new College. This was done, but not a word of “reproach” was cast upon anybody. Mr. Mills was not there to hear, and I utterly disclaim it. A fair degree of confidence was expressed that our literary castle was at last secure.

    I am informed by counsel, that the 446th Section of the 37th Chapter of the Ohio Code applies to our case, which is as follows: “if any judgments, in satisfaction of which any lands or tenements are sold shall, at any time thereafter be reversed, such reversal shall not defeat or affect the title of the purchaser or purchasers,” but the matter of the purchase money shall be adjusted between judgment creditor and debtor. That is, the title under a sale is valid, even after reversal of judgment.

    Under these circumstances we felt warranted in congratulating ourselves on the security to which we believed we had attained after so long a period of suspense and uncertainty, and in giving opportunity to our students to express their joy in this public manner.

    On the concluding paragraph, in which Mr. Mills complains of our publicly offering our devout thanks to God for His providential blessing, and invoking His guidance and aid in the proper employment of this trust, for His glory and the good of the world, I offer no criticisms. I leave It to stand in its own light.

HORACE MANN

    We the undersigned, member of the Faculty of Antioch College, indorse and approve of this above statement of President Mann, as being true and just, according to the best of our knowledge and belief.

    We would also state, that to our knowledge, Mr. Mann has ever exhibited a deep interest in all plans having for their object the payment of the debts of the Institution, and the relief of those persons who were sureties, and that he has for a long time past, devoted to this object an exhausting portion of his time and energies. His pecuniary donations toward the accomplishment of this end have been of the most liberal character. Beside the sum of $5,000 subscribed at one time, he has expended hundreds of dollars in collateral ways upon the same object. It is our profound conviction that without his personal influence and assiduous efforts, not one-fourth part of the munificent Boston donation would ever have been obtained.

    While, therefore, we fully appreciate the early, manifold, and generous sacrifices of Judge Mills in behalf of our institution, and would give him all due honor therefore, we cannot suppress our surprise and regret at the tone of his article, and the manifest injustice it does Mr. Mann.

    The trust in my hands was a judgment debt. Every lawyer knows, that to retain priority of lien on real estate, by virtue of a judgment, a levy must be made within a year. In this case, the year expires on the 29th inst. Hence, to prevent the value of the trust from being impaired in my hands, thus rendering myself liable, I was compelled to order a levy. I understand that this was made a subject of complaint. But it can have no effect, whatever, upon the judgment debtor—its object being, not a sale, but only a continuance of my priority of lien, until the condition in the second release is complied with. It is at most, therefore, only a question between two judgment creditors, which one shall have priority of lien. Shall we, who have it now, retain it, or by allowing the year to expire without levy, permit some other creditor to take precedence of us?

Scattered around the region of Mount Hermon are numerous small Temples which were orientated toward the summit, were also was a Temple at which was found commemorating the tradition of the Watchers landing and taking their oath there, as in the Enochian writings. "During the summer of 1934, Dr. Stewart Crawford and this writer [Reginald Haupt] led a small expedition, in which we studied the ancient Baal shrines surrounding Mount Hermon. We located many ruins and in each case the shrine was so oriented that when the priests and the devotees were at the altar, they faced the chief Baal sanctuary, or Quibla, located on the highest of the three peaks of Hermon. There is a sacred building made of hewn blocks of stone on the summit of Mount Hermon. Known as Qasr Antar, it was the highest temple of the ancient world, sitting at 2,814 feet (858 m) above sea level. It was documented by Sir Charles Warren in 1869. Warren described the temple as a rectangular building, sitting on an oval, stone plateau without roof. He removed a limestone stele from the northwest of the oval, broke it into two pieces and carried it down the mountain and back to the British Museum, where it currently resides. An inscription on the stele was translated by George Nickelsburg to read "According to the command of the greatest a(nd) Holy God, those who take an oath (proceed) from here." Nickelsburg connected the inscription with oath taken by the angels under Semjaza who took an oath together, bound by a curse in order to take wives in the Book of Enoch (1 Enoch 6:6). Hermon was said to have become known as "the mountain of oath" by Charles Simon Clermont-Ganneau. The name of God was supposed to be a Hellenized version of Baʿal or Hadad and Nickelsburg connected it with the place name of Baal-Hermon (Lord of Hermon) and the deity given by Enoch as "The Great Holy One".[ Eusebius recognized the religious importance of Hermon in his work "Onomasticon", saying "Until today, the mount in front of Panias and Lebanon is known as Hermon and it is respected by nations as a sanctuary" http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread891285/pg1

Lebanon's hashish equation: If farmers gain, does Hezbollah lose?For generations, residents of the impoverished flat plain of the northern Bekaa Valley have been cultivating cannabis. The illegal enterprise has earned modest incomes for farmers but immense fortunes for the dealers who buy the cannabis in bulk and export the product to lucrative markets in Europe and the Gulf. To defend their illicit crops, the fiercely independent Shiite tribes of the northern Bekaa do not hesitate to resort to arms when the Lebanese Army and police arrive with their bulldozers.

          US Pressure Builds on Iran, With Gulf States' Backing      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
New U.S economic sanctions took effect against Iran this week, targeting the Islamic Republic's automotive industry as well as its ability to purchase U.S. dollars and trade in gold. The European Union, Russia, China and Iraq broadly criticized the new sanctions, while Iranian neighbors Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, which have backed the Trump administration's more confrontational approach with Tehran, remained largely silent. Yousef al-Otaiba, UAE's ambassador to Washington, told VOA that Iran needs to be shown that its actions have consequences. "Iran's behavior has to be associated with consequences," he said. "What are these consequences? That's something we should figure out together." Al-Otaiba added that Iran's proxies in the region were acting based on its interests and advancing its regional goals and ambitions. "Iran has consistently supported and funded terrorist groups and proxies throughout the Middle East," he contended. "The one thing all those groups have in common is their goal to destabilize the region." Gulf reaction Sunni Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies have been at odds with Shiite Iran for decades, engaging in a complex proxy war that has influenced conflicts in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen. As those conflicts play out on battlefields, the three countries have backed the Trump administration's tightening measures on Tehran. Last month, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir voiced concerns about Iran's support for sectarian strife and terrorism in the region. On the sidelines of the eighth session of the China-Arab Cooperation Forum in Beijing, al-Jubeir told Asharq Al-Awsat, a London-based pro-Saudi newspaper, that Iran is actively interfering in the affairs of Arab countries. "We believe in the sovereignty of states and therefore reject Iran's interference in the affairs of Arab countries, in addition to its support to sectarian strife and terrorism," al-Jubeir said. Following the U.S. designation of Bahrain-based al-Ashtar Brigades as a global terrorist organization, Bahrain welcomed the decision and vowed support for U.S. efforts to undermine Iranian-backed terror groups in the region. "The Kingdom of Bahrain welcomes the decision of the United States Department of State in designating individuals affiliated with al-Ashtar Brigades as Specially Designated Global Terrorists," a statement by the kingdom's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. Iran's reaction Iran denies charges that it is sponsoring terrorism and supporting terrorist groups in the region. The country's president, Hassan Rouhani, told Iranian state TV this week that his country was working to decrease tensions in the region. "We are willing to decrease tensions in the region and our goal is to bring back peace and friendship," he said. "We always maintain good relationships with our neighbors and we want to remove tension generated within the region. ... Iran has never instigated a war and has always championed for peace and calmness in the region." Gulf lobbying Some Iranian analysts maintain the U.S.-led efforts to pressure Iran are a direct result of strong lobbying by Gulf states in Washington. "The coalition between Bahrain, UAE and Saudi Arabia has long lobbied against Tehran in Washington, and is pushing the Trump administration toward a harsher policy against Iran," said Ali Sarraf, a Tehran-based Persian Gulf region analyst. Shuaib Bahman, a Tehran-based Middle East affairs analyst, echoed Sarraf's assessment but argued that Gulf states are not as united as they portray themselves to be. "Due to the territorial dispute among the members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, or GCC, they couldn't stand a unanimous stance against Iran and limited the action to release [a] proclamation," Bahman said. Meir Javedanfar, an analyst on Iran at the Interdisciplinary Center, an Israeli-based research institute, said he believed Iran's power projection beyond its borders had indeed united the Gulf states. "Gulf states are worried about Iran reaching Yemen," he said. "They are concerned that the trade route through Bab el-Mandeb will be disrupted if Iranian-backed Houthis get a stronger stance in Yemen, which can impact the security and the stability in the entire region."

          Jared Kushner Thinks He Has the 'Deal of the Century' for Middle East Peace — But It Would Have Catastrophic Consequences      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
President Trump put his son-in-law in charge of working out a peace deal between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

Leaked emails from Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law and appointed steward of the Israel-Palestine conflict, are shedding light on his planned “deal of the century” for peace in the Middle East. In extracts published by Foreign Policy magazine, Kushner proposes “disrupting” the work of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and ending the refugee status of 5m Palestinians across the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

Although the emails have not been published in full, these snippets are highly revealing. Kushner’s move against UNRWA marks the next stage in the Trump administration’s plan. In January 2018 – the same month that Kushner sent these emails – Trump announced drastic cuts in US aid to UNRWA.

There are signs that defunding UNRWA is just the first stage of a much grander strategy; Kushner is also reportedly pressuring Jordan to strip the 2m Palestinians living there of their refugee status. But even taken on its own, dissolving the agency would have catastrophic consequences.

Out of the picture

UNRWA currently provides emergency aid, education and healthcare to the Middle East’s millions of Palestinian refugees. Many live below the poverty line, and would have little or no support if UNRWA’s services were to end, with their host states lacking the necessary resources to step in.

The impact would be political as well as humanitarian. The status of the refugees, who lost their homes in the 1948 war, has long been one of the most contentious issues between Israel and the Palestinians. UNRWA’s work by definition implies international recognition of the refugees’ situation and underlines their lawful right of return.

If UNRWA were dissolved while the refugees remained stateless, that would imply that the contentious question of their future and status had been resolved. On these grounds, the Palestinian Authority has condemned the Kushner plan as an attempt to remove refugees from the equation and erase their right of return, effectively denying them any chance of future citizenship in Israel-Palestine.

On the other side, critics of UNRWA – including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – contend that the agency perpetuates the Palestinian refugee crisis by supporting the refugees in their current situation rather than helping pursue a political solution, and by promoting anti-Israeli feeling. According to this view, the agency’s dissolution would improve prospects for peace.

The reality suggests the opposite. UNRWA is a product rather than a cause of the conflict, which will continue even if the agency is abolished. Stripping millions of people of basic welfare is more likely to heighten tensions than calm them. Israel would pay a price too; as an occupying power, it is legally obliged to safeguard the basic needs of the population living in areas it controls, but since UNRWA currently alleviates some of its obligations by providing essential services to 800,000 registered refugees in the West Bank and more than 1m in Gaza, the Israeli government is under far less pressure than it could be to take primary responsibility for their welfare.

Kushner himself seems aware of the potential damage, writing in one email that the US should “risk breaking things” to get results. None of the leaked extracts includes any provision for minimising the fallout. But the US administration’s opposition to UNRWA isn’t just about the refugees it serves. This is part of a broader strategy to redraw the fundamental contours of the Israeli-Palestinian “peace process” as a whole.

Dismantling Oslo

For more than 20 years, this process has been operating on the framework laid out in the 1993 Oslo Accords. Oslo established terms for a five-year interim period, to be followed by a full final peace agreement. It identified seven so-called permanent status issues – including that of the refugees – to be determined as part of this final agreement.

While every previous US administration since 1993 has endorsed this framework, Trump has been steadily working to take each of the permanent status issues off the table.

First, the administration recognised Jerusalem – deemed the most important final status issue – as the unified capital of Israel. Appearing to acknowledge his strategy, Trump explicitly described the move as “taking Jerusalem off the table”. The recent opening of the new US embassy in the city dashed Palestinian hopes that East Jerusalem would serve as the capital of their future state.

According to the Oslo framework, the Palestinian refugees’ future is the second most important permanent status issue; by mooting the abolition of UNRWA, the Trump administration seems to be planning to take this one off the table too.

The evidence suggests that the administration has similar plans for the third issue: Israeli settlements. In contrast to the Obama administration’s strong condemnation of settlement activity in the West Bank, Trump has been mostly quiet on the issue. Kushner, along with ambassador David Friedman, supported Israel’s recent Nation-State Law, which promotes “Jewish settlement” as a national value.

The four remaining permanent status issues are security arrangements, borders, international relations, and common interests such as allocation of water supplies. The Trump administration’s plans for each of these remains to be seen. Yet even if they are left on the table, the elimination of Jerusalem, the refugees and the settlements will leave the Palestinians – already the weaker party – exceptionally vulnerable. By gradually eliminating the permanent status issues, the Trump administration is working to severely restrict the scope of any final deal, with the aim of compelling the Palestinians to capitulate.
