Henderson proposes investment in teachers; Asa campaign scoffs      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Jared Henderson, the Democratic candidate for governor, today proposed a major investment in teacher payy, which was promptly dismissed by the Hutchinson campaign as the proposal of an out-of touch liberal.

Henderson, who once led Teach for America in Arkansas, has proposed a 10 percent increase in minimum teacher pay, currently no lower than $31,800, and then increase it 3.6 percent for each of the next nine years.

He figured the first two years would cost $160 million and affect 163 small school districts. It would require an increase of more than 3 percent in the state education budget, a budget that has been pinched in recent years by legislative reductions in what its research staff has estimated was necessary to cover inflationary cost increases and meet the suffiency demands of the Supreme Court's Lakeview decision.

Henderson figures the plan would require an additional $500 million in 10 years behind inflationary growth. How to pay for it?

Over time, this can be paid for by reallocating Hutchinson’s promised tax breaks for the wealthy, lowering the cost of corrections spending, and allotting collected internet state sales tax.

A spokesman for the Hutchinson campaign responded this way to KARK:

Hutchinson until now has been fixated on cutting state spending and reducing taxes, goals that don't lend themselves to big increases in teacher pay. There are wide variations in teacher pay because pay is based in part on district wealth. The poorest districts, which inevitably have the neediest students, have a hard time competing.

Henderson talked about more than pay. The full release is here.

He said he wanted to make Arkansas the best state in the country to be a teacher.

“Teachers lead the profession that creates all other professions, and for too long they’ve been underpaid, overworked, and unappreciated. My comprehensive plan makes Arkansas the best state in the country to be a public school teacher. Without investing in our teachers, Arkansas’s public schools will continue to be toward the bottom of every national ranking,” Henderson said.

“This plan also focuses on addressing the widespread discrepancies we see in the teaching profession among school districts across the state, ranging from teacher pay to teacher
retention and support. If we are going bring high-quality education to every part of Arkansas, it starts with having the best and the brightest in our classrooms, particularly in rural and low-income communities. Over time, more equitable education in Arkansas will also lead to a stronger economy and workforce.”

If our dipsy-doodle governor would acknowledge that he and others allow the raiding of public education funds to aid what are essentially private (educational?) entities, and put a stop to it, he might be able to come up with a nice little chunk of change.
It wasn't that many years ago that the state (often forcibly) consolidated little country schools -- many of which were pretty darned good -- into nearby districts to save money.
So tell me what the difference is here. Religion sometimes? Better income? Melanin, or the relative lack thereof, perhaps? If so, those "better quality" folks should be willing to pony up out of pocket for their "better quality" kids' education.

Real easy for liberals to spend other people's money. The words "balanced budget" are not in their vocabulary. Their idea of fixing problems is throw money at the problem and let our grand children pay the debt. Trickle down economics works.

Arkansas governor hopeful calls for teacher salary increase      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Democratic nominee for governor of Arkansas said he plans to raise minimum pay for teachers by an initial 10 percent with the ultimate goal of making Arkansas teachers the highest paid in the nation. Jared Henderson said Thursday that following the initial raise, he will call for 3.6 percent salary increases for nine subsequent years. Henderson's proposal came more than a month after Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson proposed a 13 percent pay hike for teachers. That would raise the starting salaries from $31,800 to $36,000. In Henderson's plan, teachers would make approximately that much the second year of pay raises.
The C.O.W.S. THE BOOK OF MATT: Matthew Shepard, "Hate Crime"      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Stephen Jimenez visits The Context of White Supremacy. A writer, author and gay male, Mr. Jimenez investigated the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard. Shepard was a White male college student who was brutally murdered by Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson. McKinney and Henderson were convicted and both received life sentences without possibility for parole. Shepard's death was originally reported - and continues to be discussed - as a barbaric "hate crime," another victim in the "war on gays." The federal "Hate Crime" bill is eponimously named in honor of him. Jimenez's 2013 publication, The Book Of Matt, challenges this conclusion with more than a decade of research. He submits that many people who knew Shepard were aware that he had a serious drug problem; some suspect that he also trafficked narcotics. Jimenez also reports that Shepard knew one of his assailants, McKinney - who was also a drug addict and distributor. The book's main theory is that Shepard was not killed because he was gay, and that this murder was not a "hate crime." Jimenez theorizes that Wyoming's violent methamphetamine trade was the primary contributor to Shepard's murder. #RacismIsNotAPrivilege INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/GusTRenegade CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE 564943# The C.O.W.S. archives: http://tiny.cc/76f6p

DIRTY TRICKS AND KENNEDY ASSASSINS      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

The entire complex plan to blame Oswald for a crime that he did not commit, a crime that had even taken place when the CIA began to lay a trail that would inexorably lead to an innocent man, involved cables to Mexican police authorities, instructions from the CIA to its Mexico City assets, in the police department there to arrest and silence witness at the Cuban embassy, a citizen of Mexico, who would not accept the false CIA legend and subsequently the use of demagoguery to present a false legend to the Warren Commission as fact. Each action by the CIA, including its destruction of its own files when an inquiry began, is a building block in the case against the CIA for its part in the assassination.” (Mark Lane, Last Word, p. 285.)

Mark Lane

(Last Word: My Indictment of the CIA in the Murder of JFK, Mark Lane, Skyhorse Publishing, www.skyhorsepublishing.com, 307 West 36th Street, 11th Floor, New York, N.Y. 10018, info@skyhorsepublishing.com, 2011, 300 pages, $24.95.)

Such is a nutshell-review of Mark Lane’s conclusion of a lifetime investigation into the reasons and facts behind the November 22, 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Mark Lane is an attorney and also an author of nine books, including Rush to Judgment and Plausible Denial.

Lane painstakingly devotes chapters to the analysis of the various scenarios constituting a case against the CIA and its methods to destroy and control the public.

FROM MAUSERS TO CIA ASSETS

In a cavalcade of topics, Mark Lane reviews arguments and scenes from the assassination. I will selectively choose only a few, leaving many other portions for the reader’s perusal.

# The Jean Hill testimony about the four to six shots she heard in the Dallas Dealey Plaza: “…shots had come from behind a wooden fence on the grassy knoll.” Arlen Specter, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, also author of the infamous “single-bullet-theory,” confronted Jean Hill in about the same way that Specter questioned Anita F. Hill in the Clarence Thomas hearings. “She said that Specter did everything possible to force her to state that she had heard only three shots and that none of them came from the grassy knoll. Jean told me that Specter said that he would release the rumor that she had an extramarital affair and that in the end she would end up looking as if she was crazy, ‘just as Oswald’s mother had.’ She said that he wanted her to accept the conclusions that he had reached before he met her.” Jean Hill added: “He was so mean I could hardly believe it.”

Such temperaments will be seen throughout JFK assassination debates and groups, often not only as a sign of narcissism (and other psychological aberrations), but also possibly a sign of the extent of the CIA psyops and psywar issued by that agency and its infiltration into the media and the lives of Americans.

# The finding of the 7.65 German Mauser on the sixth floor of the Texas Book Depository building on November22, 1963. Deputy Constable Seymour Weitzman made a sworn statement describing the Mauser, including its 4/18 telescopic sight. Lieutenant J.C. Day also examined the weapon.  The next day, the Mauser turned into an Italian Manlicher-Carcano 6.5. “I wondered how anyone who had looked at that weapon could have identified it differently.” Says Lane, “The Italian rifle became part of the foundation upon which the government built its case, but as it turns out it, too, became suspect.”

# Lane quotes Tip O’neill, the former speaker of the house, as to how the FBI intimidated him to change his testimony that he heard two shots that came behind the knoll fence. “I told the FBI what I had heard, but they said it couldn’t have happened that way and that I must have been imagining things,” said O’neill, “so I testified the way they wanted me to.”

# Lane outlines interesting facts about witness Acquilla Clemons: Clemons was an eyewitness to the murder of Dallas police officer J.D. Tippit; she said that two men had been involved in the murder, one was “kind of heavy” and the other “was tall and then thin and wore light Khaki trousers and a white shirt.” When shown a picture of Oswald, Miss Clemons said that Oswald was not one of the two men she had seen. Clemons said that one man fired at Tippit, the other waved to his partner and they both “ran from the scene in opposite directions.”  Lane said that Clemons’ comments were “corroborated by other witnesses who saw men running from the scene and who stated that Oswald was not one of them.”

Clemons said she had been threatened by two men who said they worked for the Dallas Police Department “and ordered her not to talk.” They wore guns and threatened that if she talked to anyone she “might get hurt” if she talked to the Warren Commission, she “might get killed.”

The Warren Commission dismissed her claims as “speculation and rumor.” The Commission claimed, says Lane, “…such a women did not exist.” Lane testified about Clemons in July, 1964. During September, 1964, Dorothy Kilgallen conducted an additional intervention.

“She was a courageous woman who came forward to tell the truth about what she witnessed,” says Lane, “although her life had been threatened.” (p. 27.)

A METHOD TO SUPPRESS THEM

Lane talks about the life and, later, death of Dorothy Kilgallen, a columnist for the New York Journal-American (Dorothy had been actively investigating the Kennedy assassination and obtained “a copy of Jack Ruby’s testimony, the classified top secret” files); both, Dorothy and Mark Lane, exchanged information on the topic.

Andrew Henderson/The New York Times

The author/editor Lee Israel in her Manhattan apartment: She believed Dorothy Kilgallen was murdered.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/24/books/24forg.html?_r=0.

“She knew that the FBI had focused its legions upon our work,” says Lane. “She wrote in the Journal-American (that) the FBI ‘might have been more profitably employed in probing the facts of the case rather than how I got them.’ Of course, it was not the facts that the FBI sought – it was instead a method to suppress them.”

Following Dorothy’s interview with Jack Ruby in 1965, she told Florence Smith, and other friends, that she was about to “break the case wide open.” She gave her notes to Smith. On November 18, 1965, Dorothy died; two days later, Florence died of a cerebral hemorrhage.  All of the notes could not be located. Researcher Richard Kollmar told Lane “that Dorothy had died because of her efforts to investigate the assassination.” Kollmar refused to talk any further. Unfortunately, in 1971 Kollmar committed suicide. Biographer and Editor Lee Israel examined all her available evidence on Kilgallon. “She concluded that Dorothy had been murdered,” says Lane.

ROY CRAIG

Deputy Sheriff Roger D. Craig’s observations on November 22 proved to be extremely important:  1) He interviewed Arnold Rowland and his wife who saw two men on the sixth floor of the book depository building, one with a rifle and telescopic site. 2) He was about eight feet from Deputy Sheriff Eugene Bloom when the German Mauser was found, followed by Dallas Police Captain Will Fritz doing an official police identification. The CIA’s Top Secret memo still listed the rifle (on November 25, 1963) as a German Mauser and not an Italian-Mannlicher-Carcano; says Lane: “Apparently the interagency coordination was imperfect.”

Ten questions and storylines to focus on ahead of Washington State’s first fall scrimmage      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

As Washington State prepares for its first fall scrimmage Friday evening, we look at 10 questions/storylines the Cougars could address in their mock which is slated for an 8 p.m. start at Martin Stadium.

1. Can three become two? – Mike Leach is in a hurry to whittle the quarterback race down to two, but it doesn’t mean he’ll pull the trigger before he’s able to complete a thorough examination of the candidates: Anthony Gordon, Gardner Minshew and Trey Tinsley. The audition will continue for all three under the Martin Stadium floodlights. It’s the first true scrimmage for Minshew as a WSU quarterback and the first time Gordon and Tinsley will play under the lights in Pullman with something on the line. “I’d like to see somebody separate themself,” Leach said, “and really take control of it.”

2. Missing up front – The absence of two key defensive players, Nnamdi Oguayo and Derek Moore has become one of the more prevalent – and increasingly troublesome – storylines of this preseason. Oguayo, a defensive end and WSU’s best returning pass-rusher, missed his fourth consecutive practice Thursday. Rush linebacker/defensive lineman Moore, a four-game starter last year, was absent for the third time in as many days. Asked about their status Tuesday, Leach responded with his common line: “They’re doing great.” But will either be around Friday night?

3. Divvying up the carries – Quarterback is actually one of two intriguing position battles in the backfield. James Williams, Max Borghi and, yes, even Keith Harrington are all still in the mix to contribute to the running game. It’s probably only a matter of time before Borghi clamps down the feature back role – be it later this season or at some point when his position mates graduate – but I’d predict all three players are repped equally, just like the QBs.

4. New-look D-line – The defensive line obviously takes on a different shape without Oguayo, Moore and Logan Tago, who’s been a non-participant in each of the last two practices. Provided none of those three are dealing with anything too concerning, Friday’s scrimmage is if nothing else a good opportunity to spend reps on younger/less experienced players. Expect to see a handful of combinations up front, keep an eye on the competition at nose tackle between Taylor Comfort and Pono Lolohea and count how many positions Will Rodgers III plays throughout the scrimmage. It could be as many as four (DE, DT, NT and Rush).

5. Clarity at kicker/punter – The mock game is crucial for Tinsley, Gordon and Minshew, but equally so for a quartet of less identifiable Cougars: Jack Crane, Ryan Henderson, Oscar Draguicevich and Oliver Graybar. Crane and Henderson are gunning for Erik Powell’s kicking job, while Draguicevich and Graybar are trying to nail down the starting punter duties, which will belong to a single player this season rather than three. There won’t be much room for error for the QBs tomorrow night – same goes for the specialists.

6. Who’s blocking? – I’d still feel good placing a bet on Andre Dillard (left tackle), Josh Watson (left guard), Fred Mauigoa (center), Robert Valencia (right guard) and Abraham Lucas (right tackle) all getting week-one nods, but there’s been plenty of experimentation up front this week and Leach indicated there’d be competition at a few spots. Christian Haangana and Liam Ryan, especially, seem capable of giving Watson a run for his money at LG.

7. Brandon Arconado – Kyle Sweet’s absence has given the newly-scholarshipped receiver some extended run down here in Lewiston. Arconado isn’t expected to crack the rotation at “Y” receiver – Sweet and Jamire Calvin have cemented their jobs there – but he’s been the top inside receiver at times over the last week, hauling in three touchdowns during the team period Monday and Tuesday.

8. Newcomers – A handful of the high school signees, junior college additions and FBS transfers – err, transfer – will have to contribute in some fashion this year. A few of the fall camp standouts we’ll keep an eye on: Minshew (QB), Borghi (RB), Rodrick Fisher (WR), Drue Jackson (WR), Calvin Jackson (WR), Lolohea (NT), Misiona Aiolupotea-Pei (DL), Kendrick Nunn (nickel), Halid Djibril (nickel), Chad Davis (S) and Tyrese Ross (CB).

9. Getting deeper – One of the first things Tracy Claeys identified during his first few months as WSU’s defensive coordinator was a razor-thin secondary. The defensive backfield is deeper in the sense that it added eight more bodies during the signing period, but what’s the quality of that depth? Ross, Djibril, Nunn and Davis all made plays during the first week in Lewiston. If they can take their game back to Pullman, and maintain it over the course of the next few weeks, it’ll be one less headache for the first-year Cougar DC.

10. Cool down – Temperatures at Sacajawea Junior High began in the low-90’s at the start of the week and climaxed at 107 by Thursday afternoon. There’s a 40 percent chance of rainfall Friday night and temperatures could dip into the mid-60’s, which would make the mock game feel like a cold front after a week under the boiling sun in Lewiston.

Re: Henderson proposes investment in teachers; Asa campaign scoffs      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
This from a guy who used to run TFA which essentially privatized public schools in New Orleans and around the delta? The only thing he wants to do for public school teachers is remove them of their duties and give them to a private, non unionized teacher. But hes got a D in front of his name and theres some TFA folks on the payroll at the Max buffet so nary a bad word will be spoken of this floater.

But it IS in the state constitution, which means that ALL state pols have to balance the budget.

Big-spending Liverpool must deliver on potential, says Klopp      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Jurgen Klopp's focus is on ensuring his talented Liverpool squad deliver on their potential after extensive spending in the transfer market. Liverpool's close-season outlay was greater than any of their Premier League rivals, adding Alisson, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri to a team that reached the Champions League final last term. And setting aside talk of his expectations and the strength of the group, Klopp acknowledged only results will matter when the season starts against West Ham on Sunday. "My own expectations are always pretty high, to make the best of it, get everything out of it," Klopp told a pre-match news conference. "These are my expectations all the time. "For us, it's pretty normal that there would always be one point where we spent a bit more money. The last few years I have sat here defending our 'transfer behaviour', that we sold more than we brought in. "It all made sense. We had to create a squad that is strong enough and wide enough to cope with the Premier League, to be as successful as possible. Step by step we come closer. "People ask me if it's the best squad I ever had or whatever. I don't think about that, because it's not about what we have now. "It's about what we make of it, how often we deliver, how often we bring ourselves in a mood to fight against all these Premier League teams that want to have our points. We have to be ready to fight." Klopp: “We will try to reach the highest, that’s always my expectations. It’s not about what we have now, it’s about what we make of it and how often we deliver. We have to be ready to fight.” pic.twitter.com/BAmMxdGQxl — Liverpool FC (@LFC) August 10, 2018 With players still recovering after the World Cup, Klopp will not yet be able to call on a full-strength squad - Dejan Lovren will be absent and Fabinho is a doubt due to illness - but he is confident Liverpool are ready for the match at Anfield. "We will see. They're all in a different shape," he said. "Trent [Alexander-Arnold] has been a bit longer, Hendo's [Jordan Henderson] in and full of power but only three or four days, Dejan will not be available. "[Fabinho's] scan was clear, he felt ill when he came back, so we sent him home again. We will see. "That's how it is. We have little things we have to think about, if it's a risk or not, if we take the risk or not. At the end, I believe we will have a fantastic football team on the pitch. I have to make a few decisions."

Ranked! Every Premier League club rated by their summer transfer business      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
All fees are reported and approximate, etc. We don’t hate your club – or at least, we hate all equally.20. TottenhamIN: N/AOUT: Keanan Bennetts (£2m), Anton Walkes (£200,000)You know, Daniel, you should really stop doing this.Levy did what Levy does, engaging in brinkmanship to ensure the best deal for his club. That’s the theory, anyway. Last season, Tottenham’s first summer signing arrived only a week before the transfer deadline; this season, he never arrived at all. Rumours of a £150m war chest were rightly greeted with scepticism, but even so… nothing? While the Levy lols flooded Twitter, some focusing on the irony that the Spurs chairman voted for the earlier transfer deadline, the joke is ultimately on the club’s fans. Ticket prices rose for Tottenham’s move to their still-uncompleted new stadium, some by as much as 50%, yet the supposedly ring-fenced budget for transfers hasn’t been ring-fenced at all. The team needed strengthening and new contracts are not new signings, whatever Mauricio Pochettino says.19. Manchester UnitedIN: Fred (£52m), Diogo Dalot (£19.3m), Lee Grant (£1.5m)OUT: Daley Blind (£14.1m), Sam Johnstone (£6.5m), Joel Pereira, Dean Henderson, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Axel Tuanzebe, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Matty Willock (all loan), Joe Riley (released), Michael Carrick (retired)Given their own manager’s feelings on the coverage of his club, we feel it necessary to declare that it was never our intention to put Manchester United this low in our rankings. They were mid-table until recently, the assumption being that, after a solid start, two more defenders would arrive. Or one. But a really good one. Right?Nope. Despite Jose Mourinho saying a fortnight ago: “I would like two more players; I think it’s possible I’m going to have one,” in a not-so-subtle prod to his boss, Ed Woodward didn’t manage even that andreturnedempty-handed.Mourinho’s belittling of his own players, most notably Luke Shaw, affords him limited sympathy, and he shouldn’t be allowed to forget that he has bought two £30m centre-backs already. Nonetheless, it seems extraordinary that United will enter the 2018/19 season with Alex Ferguson’s old wingers as their first-choice full-backs. Oh well. There’s always Lee Grant.18. BurnleyIN: Ben Gibson (£15m), Matej Vydra (£11m), Joe Hart (£3.5m)OUT: Scott Arfield, Dean Marney, Chris Long (released)Burnley were slow to add to their squad, and the upshot of that hesitancy was almost a premature end to their long-awaited European campaign. The Clarets released two useful squad players in Scott Arfield, who started 15 Premier League games last term, and Dean Marney, yet didn’t bring in anyone until the final few days of the window. By that point, a tiny squad had been dragged into extra time by Aberdeen, while their fans feared Burnley’s Europa League adventure might end in A) tears, B) early August, and C) Scotland.Burnley got there in the end, in the match and the market. However, giving yesterday’s man, Joe Hart, a two-year contract is incredibly short-sighted: Tom Heaton returns soon and Nick Pope later in the year, whereupon Hart will be an expensive – and noisy – third-choice goalkeeper.Meanwhile, Matej Vydra’s transfer raises questions, not answers. He can’t replace Chris Wood or Sam Vokes as the lone striker in a direct team, and is Sean Dyche, having shifted with such success from 4-4-2 to 4-4-1-1, prepared to play Vydra as a No.10 in place of the hard-working Jeff Hendrick? It’s not certain where the Czech will fit in. On a happier note, record signing Ben Gibson is a very shrewd addition in defence.17. WatfordIN: Gerard Deulofeu (£11.5m), Adam Masina (£3.5m), Ben Foster (£2.5m), Ken Sema (£2m), Marc Navarro (£1.8m), Ben Wilmot (£1.5m), Domingos Quina (£1m)OUT: Richarlison (£40m), Nordin Amrabat (£7.5m), Mauro Zarate (£2m), Costel Pantilimon (£1.1m), Jerome Sinclair, Tommie Hoban, Dodi Lukebakio, Daniel Bachmann, Alex Jakubiak (all loan), Brandon Mason (released)Hmm. There are positives: Marc Navarro is a bargain at that price, they’ve taken a lot of low-risk punts and it’s hard to argue with a profit of nearly £30m. Perhaps they could’ve used that windfall to acquire some goals, however.Buying 35-year-old Ben Foster to displace 37-year-old Heurelho Gomes in nets also seems insufficient, unless Javi Gracia plans to throw teenage Sweden international Pontus Dahlberg straight in. None of this screams ‘confidence’ from Watford.£40m (rising to £50m) for Richarlison, though…16. EvertonIN: Richarlison (£40m), Yerry Mina (£27.2m), Lucas Digne (£18m), Andre Gomes (loan), Bernard (free)OUT: Davy Klaassen (£12m), Ramiro Funes Mori (£8m), Henry Onyekeru (loan – £700,000 loan fee), Ashley Williams, Shani Tarashaj, Luke Garbutt, Antonee Robinson, Callum Connolly (all loan), Wayne Rooney, Joel Robles, Jose Baxter, David Henen (all released)Everton needed an injection of pace and they’ve got it in Richarlison, Bernard (one of those transfers where life imitates Football Manager) and the earlier acquisition of Theo Walcott. However, they also needed a striker, a midfielder and a pair of centre-backs, and it took a late scramble to find two of those four players. The inconsistent Yerry Mina shot up in value thanks to his set-piece goals at the World Cup, but at 23 he could still be an asset; the question is whether he, Michael Keane, Phil Jagielka and Mason Holgate represent four reliable centre-back options. The striker didn’t materialise, even though Everton disentangled themselves from Wayne Rooney’s wage asphyxiation and found a buyer for Davy Klaassen, clawing back half of the fee they paid for the Dutchman a year ago. Fans should be excited by the new arrivals, if they ignore the nagging sense that Everton think they’re best mates with Barcelona, while Barcelona see them as the geeky new kid with deep pockets.INTERVIEWRicharlison: “On the day that the guy pointed the gun at my head, he thought I was a drug dealer”15. ChelseaIN: Kepa Arrizabalaga (£71.6m), Jorginho (£50m), Mateo Kovacic (loan), Rob Green (free)OUT: Thibaut Courtois (£31.5m), Jeremie Boga (£3.6m), Jonathan Panzo (£2.7m), Kenedy, Baba Rahman, Mario Pasalic, Kasey Palmer, Lewis Baker, Jamal Blackman, Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori, Trevoh Chalobah, Todd Kane, Matt Miazga, Eduardo, Jake Clarke-Salter (all loan), Wallace, Matej Delac (both released)It’s all a bit unbalanced. Having a large squad is no skin off Chelsea’s nose – they’ve 25 players out on loan already and another half-dozen will surely join them before that window shuts – but over 30 senior players are at the club. While Maurizio Sarri’s 4-3-3 allows for some rotation between central midfielders, he probably doesn’t need Jorginho (part of a £57m deal with Napoli for player and manager), Mateo Kovacic (part of a hostage negotiation with Thibaut Courtois), N’Golo Kante, Cesc Fabregas, Ross Barkley, Danny Drinkwater, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Ruben Loftus-Cheek (not to mention Ethan Ampadu and Marco van Ginkel).Amid a £90m net spend for not a great deal, the headline is, of course, Courtois’ vanishing act. Losing one of the world’s best goalkeepers for less than half what Liverpool paid for Alisson has to hurt, and ending up £40m out of pocket after finding his replacement doesn’t look goodeither, but it’s the best Chelsea could have hoped for once Courtois had refused to extend his contract beyond next year and then stopped turning up for training. We’re sure Rob Green will push Kepa hard for his place.READKepa Arrizabalaga: Chelsea’s world-record goalkeeper with magnificent reflexes – but still a lot to learn14. NewcastleIN: Yoshinori Muto (£9.5m), Federico Fernandez (£6m), Fabian Schar (£3.5m), Martin Dubravka (£3.5m), Salomon Rondon, Kenedy (both loan), Ki Sung-yueng (free)OUT: Aleksandar Mitrovic (£22m), Mikel Merino (£10.7m), Chancel Mbemba (£7m), Matz Sels (£3.5m), Adam Armstrong (£1.7m), Ivan Toney (£800,000), Dwight Gayle, Jack Colback (both loan), Massadio Haidara, Jesus Gamez, Curtis Good (all released)“Rafa, as always, has my full support, and contrary to some media reports that portray me as a pantomime villain, I will continue to ensure that every penny generated by the club is available to him.” So said Mike Ashley in May.Three months on, Newcastle have predictably ended the summer with a £23m surplus. Shifting Aleksandar Mitrovic to Fulham covered their four cash buys; it’s just that Newcastle sold five other players as well. It’s not hard to see why the fans aren’t happy. And yet, from the business perspective which these rankings have to consider, the situation is this: Newcastle are £20m-plus to the good and don’t look any weaker. The problem is that they weren’t exactly strong to begin with.READWhere does the money go at Newcastle United?13. SouthamptonIN: Jannik Vestergaard (£22.1m), Mohamed Elyounoussi (£16m), Angus Gunn (£10m), Stuart Armstrong (£7m), Danny Ings (loan)OUT: Dusan Tadic (£10.1m), Guido Carillo, Sofiane Boufal, Jordy Clasie (all loan), Stuart Taylor, Florin Gardos, Jeremy Pied (all released)Is there value in Southampton’s under-the-radar summer business? The cop-out answer is ‘only time will tell’, but an early guess might be that it’s questionable. Although Stuart Armstrong is an athletic, attacking and intelligent midfielder, he isn’t at the level of Virgil van Dijk or Victor Wanyama, who trod the same Celtic-to-Southampton path at a younger age.Goalkeeper Angus Gunn still has a lot to learn. Mohamed Elyounoussi and Jannik Vestergaard feel overpriced. Finally, Danny Ings was a last-minute grab that, with Manolo Gabbiadini, Shane Long and Charlie Austin, leaves Saints with four quarters of one fully-functioning Premier League striker (Guido Carrillo, a club record signing seven months ago, has been shipped out on loan).More positively, all five arrivals are of the right age, 22-26, and persuading an Eredivisie club to part with £10m for one player deserves some sort of medal.12. Crystal PalaceIN: Cheikhou Kouyaté (£9.5m), Jordan Ayew (loan), Max Meyer, Vicente Guaita (both free)OUT: Jaroslaw Jach (loan), Yohan Cabaye, Damien Delaney, Bakary Sako, Lee Chung-yong, Diego Cavalieri (all released)Although very little money was spent (and received), Roy Hodgson identified a competent goalkeeper in Vicente Guaita and bolstered his midfield options two-fold, theorising that his team didn’t need much in order to improve on their impressive results under him in 2017/18.Some might argue, though, that Palace needed full spinal surgery and that Vicente Guaita, Cheikhou Kouyaté and Max Meyer are just a few vertebrae. Scott Dann and Mamadou Sakho are injury concerns, yet they and James Tomkins are Palace’s only natural centre-backs, while at the top end, a move back to the wing for Wilfried Zaha would make their striking options Alexander Sorloth, Christian Benteke and Connor Wickham – the mysterious, the misfiring and the missing. A last-minute loan deal for Jordan Ayew doesn’t inspire confidence.Between the two problem positions, Meyer is an eye-catching signing. His star may have fallen at Schalke since he was hailed as Germany’s next wunderkind and made their provisional World Cup squad in 2014, but his ability isn’t in question and he is still only 22.11. Cardiff CityIN: Josh Murphy (£11m), Bobby Reid (£10m), Greg Cunningham (£4m), Alex Smithies (£3.5m), Harry Arter, Victor Camarasa (both loan)OUT: Omar Bogle (loan), Lee Camp, Greg Halford, Matty Kennedy, Frederic Gounongbe, Ben Wilson (all released)It started well: Neil Warnock identified his targets and bought them, all four purchases being made in June. Then six weeks passed with no more arrivals, despite Warnock searching with increasing desperation for a holding midfielder to ensure that Sol Bamba wouldn’t be deputising there on the opening weekend. Whether deadline-day loanees Harry Arter and Victor Camarasa really embody that role is up for debate, but Arter’s energetic all-round game could make him a canny signing.Criticising signings is trickier when they’re the players expressly wanted by the manager – unlike with other clubs here, none of Warnock’s four Championship purchases were fall-back options. Alex Smithies looks the pick of the bunch, provided he can wrestle the underrated Neil Etheridge out of goal, and Greg Cunningham is a good bargain buy.Josh Murphy still has much to prove, however, and while Bobby Reid looks an excellent signing on paper after his 21-goal season for Bristol City, 2017/18 was his first season as a striker (hence it accounting for two-thirds of the goals across the 25-year-old’s career). There are doubts over his natural position, if any, in Warnock’s preferred 4-3-3 system.10. Manchester CityIN: Riyad Mahrez (£60m), Philippe Sandler (£2.2m), Daniel Arzani (£1.3m)OUT: Angus Gunn (£10m), Pablo Maffeo (£8m), Angelino (£5m), Joe Hart (£3.5m), Olarenwaju Kayode (£2.7m), Rodney Kongolo (£800,000), Jack Harrison, Aleix Garcia, Manu Garcia, Mix Diskerud, Luke Brattan, Tosin Adarabioyo, Marlos Moreno, Lukas Nmecha, Brandon Barker, Matt Smith (all loan), Yaya Toure (released)They got Riyad Mahrez. They cast off Yaya Toure and his moods. They raised £30m by selling players they won’t miss. And, of course, Manchester City didn’t need to change much. But why didn’t they buy a midfielder? After all, Pep Guardiola identified Jorginho as a necessary purchase, only to make no alternative arrangements once he chose Chelsea. David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne playing in central midfield means that Fernandinho’s role is arguably the most important in Manchester City’s XI. He absolutely stepped up to the plate, curbing his box-to-box instincts, but for how much longer can a 33-year-old carry the defensive duties of three players?Neither Ilkay Gundogan nor Fabian Delph have convinced in that vital role, and Phil Foden doesn’t suit it, which leaves City with a potential problem that was easily identified and should have been easily avoided. Baffling.9. BournemouthIN: Jefferson Lerma (£25m), David Brooks (£11.5m), Diego Rico (£10.7m)OUT: Benik Afobe (£10m), Lewis Grabban (£6m), Max Gradel (£1.8m), Harry Arter, Brad Smith, Emerson Hyndman, Connor Mahoney(all loan), Adam Federici, Ryan Allsop (both released), Rhoys Wiggins (retired)Somehow, Bournemouth will go into their fourth Premier League season with half of the same starting XI that took them up in 2014/15. That in itself is a worry, although Diego Rico may well replace Charlie Daniels at left-back once his opening three-match suspension is served. Moves have been made to regenerate the midfield, with Lewis Cook playing more of a starring role alongside Bournemouth’s new record signing: the, uh, combative Jefferson Lerma, with his 16 bookings in 26 La Liga appearances last season.David Brooks, 21, is the most exciting new face and Bournemouth need him in an attack that borders on uninspiring. With that in mind, as well as the Cherries having only four options for their occasional back three, is this trio of additions enough?8. HuddersfieldIN: Terence Kongolo (£17.5m), Adama Diakhaby (£9m), Ramadan Sobhi (£5.7m), Florent Hadergjonaj (£5m), Jonas Lossl (£2.5m), Juninho Bacuna (£2.5m), Isaac Mbenza (loan), Erik Durm, Ben Hamer (both free)OUT: Tom Ince (£10m), Scott Malone (£3m), Michael Hefele (£300,000), Sean Scannell (£250,000), Jordy Hiwula (£150,000), Tariq Holmes-Dennis (appearances-based fee), Joel Coleman, Jack Payne (both loan), Rob Green (released), Dean Whitehead (retired)The Terriers made a decent return on their £30m net spend, the coffers boosted by the sale of Tom Ince back to his natural home in the second tier. Turning loans permanent is an excellent strategy – ‘try before you buy’ and all that – and they’ve made very good acquisitions in defender Terence Kongolo, the bargainous goalkeeper Jonas Lossl and, to a lesser extent, the nonetheless useful right-back Florent Hadergjonaj.Potential seems to be the watchword. Six of Huddersfield’s seven outfield signings are 24 or under. The exception is an intriguing one: 26-year-old Erik Durm, World Cup winner, who has joined on a one-year contract in order to prove his fitness.7. ArsenalIN: Lucas Torreira (£26.4m), Bernd Leno (£19.3m), Sokratis Papastathopoulos (£17.7m), Matteo Guendouzi (£7m), Stephan Lichtsteiner (free)OUT: Chuba Akpom (£2m), Jeff Reine-Adelaide (£1.5m), Calum Chambers, Matt Macey, Takuma Asano (all loan), Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere (both released), Per Mertesacker (retired)It seems a very long time ago that Arsenal brought in this famous five (if that’s not too generous to 19-year-old Matteo Guendouzi). Extra settling time is no bad thing, however, especially following the wide range of departures from Arsenal’s squad over the past 12 months, not to mention a new manager.Lucas Torreira promises big things in midfield, while defensive thirtysomethings Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Stephan Lichtsteiner offer leadership if not longevity. Bernd Leno could be a real coup: he is 26, racked up 300 appearances in seven years for Bayer Leverkusen and, in stark contrast to headline-makers Alisson and Kepa, cost under £20m to buy.READWhy Lucas Torreira will give Arsenal something they have lacked since Patrick Vieira6. BrightonIN: Alireza Jahanbakhsh (£17m), Yves Bissouma (£15m), Bernardo (£9m), Martin Montoya (£6.3m), Florin Andone (£5.3m), David Button (£4m), Dan Burn (£3m), Percy Tau (£2.9m), Anders Dreyer (£500,000), Leon Balogun, Jason Steele (both free)OUT: Sam Baldock (£5m), Connor Goldson (£3m), Jamie Murphy (£1m), Jiri Skalak (£700,000), Dan Burn, Christian Walton (both loan), Steve Sidwell, Tim Krul, Niki Maenpaa, Rohan Ince, Uwe Hünemeier (all released), Liam Rosenior (retired)It’s initially surprising to see Brighton spend over £60m and yet it’s roughly equivalent with last year’s outlay, with the added bonus of recouping £10m in sales this time. The results are intriguing – a mixture of low-cost experience (Martin Montoya, Leon Balogun), genuinely exciting record signings (21-year-old Yves Bissouma, promptly usurped by Alireza Jahanbakhsh) and lower-league back-ups (Dan Burn, who has gone back to Wigan on loan until January, and David Button). That Button cost £4m and will only compete with Sunderland outcast Jason Steele to be first reserve in goal, rather than third choice, says a lot about today’s market. There’s a potential problem here, too: Mat Ryan will be at the Asian Cup for maybe as long as a whole month later in the season, and there are big questions over the quality of his replacements in Button and Steele, although they’d make for a superb detective duo.Beating competitors to Jahanbakhsh is a real coup, mind, in an otherwise positive window.5. West HamIN: Felipe Anderson (£35m), Issa Diop (£22m), Andriy Yarmolenko (£17.5m), Lukasz Fabianski (£7m), Carlos Sanchez (£4m), Lucas Perez (£4m), Fabian Balbuena (£3.5m), Xande Silva (£1.3m), Jack Wilshere, Ryan Fredericks (both free)OUT: Cheikhou Kouyaté (£9.5m), Reece Burke (£1.5m), Domingos Quina (£1m), Jordan Hugill, Martin Samuelsen, Marcus Browne (all loan), James Collins, Patrice Evra (both released)Recent high-risk, low-reward transactions mean West Ham are rarely high in our rankings, but this season they seemed to have learned their lesson. Instead of signing a 29-year-old flavour of the month for an eight-figure fee, they’ve identified and acquired a range of talented freebies, a reliable goalkeeper in Lukasz Fabianski and, in Felipe Anderson, their second record signing of the summer. It’s a statement that West Ham now look to buy the best – and don’t mind paying for it.Admittedly, West Ham’s owners did slip into old habits at the last. Spending a significant sum on the past-his-best Andriy Yarmolenko was already questionable, but mitigated as a one-off. That was seemingly debunked, however, when the club brought in Carlos Sanchez (32) and Lucas Perez (29) on the final day. Still, with Cheikhou Kouyaté moving across London to Crystal Palace, the experienced Sanchez will cover them for a year should Pedro Obiang leave, as expected, and Perez has plenty to offer on the back of a reasonably low fee.4. LiverpoolIN: Alisson (£67m), Naby Keita (£52.8m), Fabinho (£39m), Xherdan Shaqiri (£13m)OUT: Danny Ward (£12.5m), Danny Ings, Harry Wilson, Ben Woodburn, Adam Bogdan, Ryan Kent, Ovie Ejaria, Allan (all loan), Emre Can, Jon Flanagan, Jordan Williams (all released)Jose Mourinho would have you believe that Liverpool’s transfer business has been so outlandish, they must win the title. We can’t imagine why he’d have an agenda to say such a thing, so he must be right. It has been a good summer for Liverpool, mind. Spending north of £170m naturally brings both expectation and an element of risk, but it was imperative that Jurgen Klopp addressed a goalkeeping problem of five years’ standing and revamped the Reds’ midfield. In 23-year-old Naby Keita and 24-year-old Fabinho, Liverpool should be set for a few years. (Fabinho also offers a fourth option at right-back, and you can never be too careful.) Buying Xherdan Shaqiri with the money raised from selling a reserve goalkeeper isn’t bad business, either. The drawbacks? Allowing Emre Can to wind down his contract and leave for nothing is a blow, when he could have brought in a handy £30m, and the centre of defence still looks vulnerable. On the whole, though, Liverpool have done well.READAlisson Becker: Liverpool's world-record new goalkeeper "who can define an era"3. LeicesterIN: James Maddison (£22m), Caglar Soyuncu (£19m), Ricardo Pereira (£17.5m), Filip Benkovic (£13m), Rachid Ghezzal (£12.6m), Danny Ward (£12.5m), Jonny Evans (£3.5m)OUT: Riyad Mahrez (£60m), Ahmed Musa (£14.8m), Harvey Barnes, George Thomas (both loan), Robert Huth, Ben Hamer (both released)It’s not often that a club’s best signing is also the cheapest, but a cut-price Jonny Evans, in or not long past his prime at the age of 30, might be the pick of a good crop. Two young centre-backs have arrived alongside him, too, meaning Leicester are ready for Harry Maguire’s big-money departure in January (look, it’s going to happen). The good news doesn’t stop there. Ricardo Pereira is one hell of an upgrade on Danny Simpson, while Rachid Ghezzal can help to fill the void left by Riyad Mahrez, a hitherto underused Danny Ward can challenge the waning Kasper Schmeichel for his place, and 21-year-old James Maddison can show why he was so in-demand.On top of all that, the Mahrez windfall and a surprisingly good fee for Saudi Arabia-bound Ahmed Musa means that Leicester’s overall expenditure was only £25m or so; indeed, they were in profit before deadline day. It has been a very good window indeed.READCaglar Soyuncu: Turkey's great defensive hope2. FulhamIN: Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa (£30m), Jean Michael Seri (£25m), Aleksandar Mitrovic (£22m), Alfie Mawson (£15m), Joe Bryan (£6m), Fabri (£5.4m), Maxime Le Marchand (£5m), Andre Schurrle, Sergio Rico, Luciano Vietto, Calum Chambers, Timothy Fosu-Mensah (all loan)OUT: David Button (£4m), Tayo Edun, Stephen Humphrys (both loan), Ryan Fredericks, George Williams (both released)So, the tweet from a certain betting company that applauded Fulham for being the first promoted club to spend £100m completely missed the point. That in itself should not be celebrated. It’s not the amount spent that matters; the important thing is always to recruit well. But bloody hell, have Fulham recruited well. They started with 14 senior players, such was their reliance on loans last season, and ended with a tightly-packed squad of 25 that has no discernible drop-off in quality. Jean Michael Seri is easily Fulham’s jewel in the crown, the Ivorian midfielder having been only a last-minute administrative U-turn away from joining Barcelona last year.If anything, things got a bit silly on the window’s final day. The Cottagers had already made excellent inroads, buying a whole new spine in Fabri, Alfie Mawson, Seri and Aleksandar Mitrovic.Maxime Le Marchand providesdefensive support, and Calum Chambers and Andre Schurrle have arrived on loan, the latter’s lasting two years. Then came the afternoon of August 9. Sergio Rico on loan? Well, there’s already Fabri and Marcus Bettinelli in goal, but OK. Luciano Vietto as well? Go on then. And still they spent, splashing a club-record £30m fee on a Marseille midfielder, acquiring a new left-back to take their total expenditure past £100m, and finally arranging a fifth loan deal, leaving Fulham with a full XI of signings, plus a substitute goalkeeper. Smiles turned to nervous laughter. Was this overkill?Optimism reigns supreme nonetheless. The question does remain: will these players fight for a place, or just fight? But, with more options added to an already talented squad, Fulham are prepared for battle.1. WolvesIN: Adama Traore (£18m), Diogo Jota (£12.3m), Willy Boly (£10m), Benik Afobe (£10m), Joao Moutinho (£5m), Leo Bonatini (£3.6m), Ruben Vinagre (£300,000), Leander Dendoncker (loan + £13.5m purchase in 2019), Raul Jimenez, Jonny (both loan), Rui Patricio (free)OUT: Benik Afobe (£1m loan fee + £12m purchase in January), Barry Douglas (£3m), Ben Marshall (£1.5m), Priance Oniangue (£500,000), Duckens Nazon (£200,000), Roderick Miranda, Rafa Mir, Harry Burgoyne (all loan), Carl Ikeme (retired)Negatives out of the way first. One: there are question marks over a couple of Wolves’s defenders, although they do have options: Romain Saiss is being retrained to play there, as Conor Coady was before him, and new midfielder Leander Dendoncker can play at centre-back if necessary. Secondly, selling Barry Douglas felt a little needless, unless Nuno is confident that Jonny or Ruben Vinagre can replace the Scot’s attacking threat on the left, not to mention his set-pieces – in all, Douglas contributed 19 goals and assists in 38 appearances at wing-back last season. But it’s very revealing that the biggest doubt at Wolves is how they’ll manage to pack so much talent into their midfield and attack, following one of the most aggressive recruitment drives of any promoted team in recent history. They’ve bought virtually a full XI and added depth across the park, not to mention natural talents in Portugal No.1 Rui Patricio, experienced Champions League campaigner Joao Moutinho and record signing Adama Traore. It’s also hard to ignore the suggestion that Benik Afobe could be the single best bit of business by any club. Wolves bought him for £10m, paid a week of his wages, then loaned him to Stoke for £1m with an obligation to buy for £12m in January. That’s a nice little £3m profit for doing bugger all.New features you'd love on FourFourTwo.com

IMG_2267

Yesterday, I returned from a 3-week vacation (with some success at also doing some writing) at my summer cottage in Minaki, Ontario. The last full day I was there, I was visiting on a neighbor’s (Canadian translation: neighbour’s) dock to say good-bye. We had both noticed earlier that day a stray buoy that had drifted into some relatively open water. I’ve been going there since 1951 and my neighbor has been doing so since about 2006 and we both knew that it didn’t belong there. If there was any doubt, the angle of the buoy confirmed our belief: it was tilted about 30 degrees from horizontal and the end of the buoy was ragged. If a boat were to run into it at night–and yes, some people around there do operate their boats at night–the buoy could do a lot of damage and even cause a fatality. I expressed that thought to my neighbor, Don Fullerton, and he agreed.

About 15 minutes later, he said, “Dave (almost everyone at Minaki calls me Dave), come with me.” We got in his fishing boat and went out to the buoy. I reached over to pull it and was pleased that it was made of plastic and wasn’t as heavy as I expected. At the end was a long chain whose end, we figured, must have caught on a rock below. We pulled it and it came loose. So we pulled the buoy into his boat. It was filled with foul-smelling debris. We took it back to his dock.

Why do I tell this story on EconLog? Because so often when I hear people argue for government intervention in economic activity, they say, “Without government doing this, who would ____?” There are few government officials around. Employees of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources are typically out enforcing fishing regulations. The one member of the Ontario Provincial Police is busy, I assume, with other matters. Maybe he would have got to it, but when I was out on my jet ski earlier that day, I saw the buoy and 4 hours later, it was still there.

So we did it. Small piece of evidence ? Yes. But an illustrative one nevertheless.

Poundworld UK has been purchased by Dublin retailing family, the Hendersons, who opened Ireland’s original Poundworld store in 1984. David Henderson confirmed their offer had been accepted by administrators Deloitte on Thursday to purchase the best and remaining stores for an undisclosed sum. Poundworld UK, which was bought by US TPG Capital in 2015 for £150 million (€166.8m), collapsed into administration in June, closing over 250 stores, resulting in the loss of 4,000 jobs. Ray Henderson sold his original Poundworld, then changed to Euroworld in 2007. His son, David Henderson, who has experience in the retail sector in Ireland and the US, led the negotiations. “We are delighted to have agreed the purchase of Poundworld and we now look forward to bringing the company back to profit and provide current and new customers with an unrivalled product offering at low prices,” David Henderson said. The Hendersons have formed a new UK entity, RVP Holdings Limited, to operate the business there. Poundworld turned over nearly £500m (€555.9m) in 2017 with 6,000 employees across 337 stores, selling everything predominantly at £1.

The Geek and the Goddess
Allie Everhart
Publication date: August 7th 2018
Genres: Romance, Young Adult
People always say they wish they could predict the future. But not me. I already know my future. I’m going to lose my sight. I don’t know exactly when, but it’s going to happen. And it’s the reason I’ll never fall in love.
At least that’s what I thought. Until one day a guy walks into my chem class and changes all that.
I thought for sure he’d avoid me after he saw how people at school treat me. The teasing. The nicknames. Just being seen with me is enough to ruin his reputation, yet this guy still wanted to date me. And he wouldn’t take no for an answer.
That’s how it began. How it ended is not at all what I expected. Ours is an unlikely love story.
Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo
EXCERPT:
A guy appears at the door. He looks back at it, like he’s double-checking the room number, then says something to a girl up front. She nods and he closes the door.
Everyone looks up and stares at him. He’s tall and thin, wearing jeans and a button-up white shirt with a blue blazer over it. And he has on a tie that’s blue and green plaid.
Who dresses like that for class? A blazer and a tie? Maybe he transferred here from a prep school.
“Greetings, earthlings,” he says in a deep voice. He smiles and a few people chuckle.
“Wesley,” Mr. Henderson says. “Welcome.”
“Thank you,” he says in a cheery tone, not seeming to care that people are staring at him.
“We have a seat for you back here,” Henderson says.
He sees me and smiles. “Guess it’s my lucky day.”
Lucky day? What is he talking about?
Everyone watches as he makes his way to the back. As he approaches my table, I notice he’s carrying a briefcase. Like one of those hard covered briefcases men used to carry to work. He sets it down and opens the metal hinges. The briefcase pops open and inside is his laptop, a notebook, and some pens. He takes out the laptop, then closes the briefcase.
“Everyone, this is Wesley Deckle,” Mr. Henderson says. “He moved here last summer from Sacramento, California. Please welcome him to Wisconsin by introducing yourselves after class.” He walks over to his desk. “I want phones put away and books out. We’ll begin shortly.”
Wesley holds out his hand to me and smiles. “Hi. I’m Wesley. And you are?”
“Luna,” I say as I get a better look at his face. He’s kind of cute. His eyes are a swirly mix of blue that reminds me of those pictures of Earth taken from space. He has dark brown hair that’s a little long with curly waves that make it look messy but in a good way. And he has good skin. Not a single zit, which is rare for people our age.
“Luna,” he repeats, and I wait for him to follow that with whatever rude comment he’s going to make about my unusual name. But instead he says, “That’s the coolest name ever.”
I stare at him, skeptical of his words. It’s quite possible he’s being sarcastic. He looks like someone who uses sarcasm.
“Are you being serious?” I ask.
“Luna. Roman goddess of the moon,” he says, smiling. “You were named after a goddess. That’s cool, don’t you think?”
“Not really.” I look away from him. “I’ve never liked my name.”
“Why don’t you like it?”
“Let’s start by reviewing the syllabus,” Mr. Henderson says.
I open my laptop, not answering Wesley’s question. Because answering it means telling him the history of my name and how it’s been used to tease me, ridicule me, make me an outcast. There’s no need to explain all that. He’ll find that out soon enough.

Spike Lee's new film 'BlacKkKlansman' is based on an electrifying true story, and it has a 98% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

blackklansman posterFocus Features

Critics are praising Spike Lee's latest film, "BlacKkKlansman," as the best work in years from the acclaimed filmmaker.

The movie is based on the true story and memoir of Ron Stallworth, the first African-American detective to work in the Colorado Springs police department, who in the late 1970s devised a plan to infiltrate and expose the Klu Klux Klan.

"BlacKkKlansman" was developed and produced by Jordan Peele (the Oscar-winning director of "Get Out"). Peele brought the project to Lee as a working concept in 2017, and critics are calling the resulting work a dynamic mix of crime drama and comedy, as well as a sharp social commentary on both the past and present.

The film, which stars John David Washington and Adam Driver, currently has a 98% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Here's what critics have said about "BlacKkKlansman," which opens nationwide on Friday:

"Spike Lee returns to form with a true-life story that works as comedy, crime drama and political alarm-bell all at once."

Focus Features

Rafer Guzman, Newsday

"Spike Lee's hellraiser about a black cop who infiltrated the KKK in the 1970s is also an incendiary indictment of our current Trump moment and one of the best films of the year. A cinema giant has found his voice again and the power to make it heard."

Focus Features

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"Its fiery message couldn't be more timely - and its rage more justified."

Focus Features

Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly

"[Lee] is firing on all cylinders here. 'BlacKkKlansman' is a true conversation starter, and probably a conversation ender as well."

Focus Features

Odie Henderson, RogerEbert.com

"'BlacKkKlansman' announces from the jump that viewers are in for a lush, sensory treat as Lee plays with the film vernacular he's manipulated so adroitly and expressively for three decades."

Focus Features

Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

"It was history written with lightning. 'BlaKkKlansman' is a deafening roll of the thunder we've been waiting for ever since."

Focus Features

David Erlich, IndieWire

"Lee never takes his eye off the connecting thread between the events of 1978 and the present. The result is one of his most flat-out entertaining films in years, and also one of his most uncompromising."

Focus Features

Emily Yoshida, Vulture

BREAKING: Teachers fear Hutchinson administration has targeted LR teachers union and is pushing for more charters      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Trouble is brewing in the Little Rock School District over the Hutchinson administration's apparent unwillingness to deal with the Little Rock Education Association and fears that the governor's education commissioner, Johnny Key, is also bent on enabling more charter school development in the city, including a high school in Northwest Little Rock.

Multiple sources tell me a meeting of teachers will be called this afternoon to discuss developments. Shortly, this could grow into a major issue in races for Little Rock mayor and Arkansas governor.

The Little Rock Education Association, an affiliate of the Arkansas Education Association, has been a bargaining agent for Little Rock teachers for more than a half-century. It has nobly stood for kids against many dark forces, ranging from the segregationists of the 1950s and 60s to incompetent and dishonest superintendents in recent years.

It is one of a very few union agreements with teachers in Arkansas. Evidence mounts that Education Commissioner Johnny Key, who serves as Little Rock "school board" since the district was taken over by the state in 2015, wants them gone.

This would be in keeping with the anti-union posture of both the governor and the powerful lobby of super-wealthy, led by the Walton family, intent on privatizing the Little Rock School District. Teacher resistance was a key element in defeat of Walton-backed legislation in 2015 that would have allowed a state takeover of the district for parceling out to private operators, a process that is underway more slowly nonetheless. The latest news is that the Key administration is willing to allow a sale of a building next to the district's new middle school on Highway 10 for use as a charter high school. The Walton Family Foundation has ready cash to enable such a deal. It would leach still more teachers out of the district and likely draw heavily from the higher income, predominantly white surrounding neighborhood, to the detriment of the rest of the district. It's long been an aim of the Walton's $237,000-a-year lobbyist stationed at a Little Rock-based nonprofit.

But a more immediate concern is the teacher contract, which expires Oct. 31. It is a product of a new agreement negotiated with Baker Kurrus, who spent a year as school superintendent before Key fired him for objecting to charter school proliferation. Kurrus rewrote a cumbersome contract, paring it down to a few pages. He won important concessions from the union on a reduction in pay and contract lengthy and they've seen a retrenchment in jobs as district enrollment has dropped. They supported a tax vote that was controversial. Their thanks for a willingness to sacrifice in the name of the greater good? Not much.

An employee policy manual developed by district employees and the LREA has gone unsigned by Key since September. This is a sign of deep disrespect by Key, given that it was approved not only by teachers and district administrators but also by the community advisory board that nominally has some influence on district affairs. The state has also thrown up resistance to accepting the routine certification of LREA membership. (It must demonstrate 50 percent membership of certified and non-certified employees, except administrators.) It has done so.

The fear now is that the final step will be Key's refusal to OK a new contract, known as a professional negotiating agreement. As I understand it, little is sought by way of changes in the current agreement and negotiations should be simple The "key" issue is whether the LREA will continue to be recognized as a representative of teachers.

The teachers are intent on continuing to teach. But a rejection of their efforts could lead to a monumental reaction.

Political fallout will be certain, if that happens, in both the mayor's race and the governor's race.

Kurrus is running for mayor. All four candidates, including Warwick Sabin, Vincent Tolliver and Frank Scott, say they want the district returned to local control, but the state Board of Education and Key have made no significant movement in that direction. The LREA involvement and influence in the community is long and strong.  Will mayoral candidates line up with teachers or the Hutchinson administration?

Don't badmouth LREA members to me, a parent of two graduates of the LRSD. I know the committed men and women of the LREA. I know them as people whose days weren't guided by a time clock, whose pocketbooks opened up for supplies and who embraced children of every color and need in the warmest of ways.

There ARE people who've permanently left the district and not all of the city lies in LRSD. So someone perhaps could make hay in the city race politically by taking an anti-union position. It would not be smart. If Little Rock is to grow as a city, it must have a cohesive true public school district, not a crazy-quilt of private schools operating with public money, as the Waltons desire. The LREA is a bedrock of that. If teachers aren't respected and valued, the schools will reflect the community view

The governor's race is a different matter. I'd hope, based on his statements yesterday about lifting teachers, that Jared Henderson, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, would object at a minimum to the Hutchinson administration using the LRSD as a whipping boy for its and the Waltons' anti-union agenda.  Beating up on unions is popular in some quarters (not Missouri this week, where voters smashed a right-to-work law). An anti-union teacher group that has been supported on the national level by Walton money has lately been spending heavily on newspaper advertising to lure new members and throw criticism on the Arkansas Education Association and its affiliates.

Much politics are to come. Some fear the Hutchinson administration, through Key, might even WANT to provoke a teacher action in response to a refusal to recognize the LREA or work with teachers on job conditions. Remember that working conditions are about kids' conditions, too. Teachers have won these showdowns in other states recently. Arkansas? We may soon see.

The simple solution is to continue to recognize a group that has gone far more than halfway to accommodate changing conditions in Little Rock.

Joe Armon Jones tour dates
Ahead of a stellar London show next week...

The piano has been at the centre of musical composition for so long that young artists often dismiss the instrument.

At heart, though, it remains a beast of real complexity, with both its musical and emotional range leaving many areas still to be explored.

London's Joe Armon-Jones has made the keys his home, accepting influences from the classical world, all shades of jazz, and club culture.

A phenomenal musician, he's a vital member of Ezra Collective as well as a noted collaborator - go check out the 'Idiom' EP - as well as a composer and band leader in his own right.

Debut album 'Starting Today' was released on Brownswood earlier in the year, one of the defining records in a historic year for UK jazz.

Set to play a key London show next week as part of a much wider European tour, Joe Armon-Jones sat down with Clash to discuss some heroes of the keys...

Ahmad Jamal

This is the top donny in my opinion. Been killing it since the 40s; stayed relevant and kept forwarding his own playing, as well as the genre itself. Also when you watch him play live, after every song finishes you can hear him say 'yeahhh' on mic just as the last note finishes. After every single song, no exception.

And even just watching him spurring his band mates on and laying out to watch them play was very inspiring for me growing up.

- - -

Herbie Hancock

He's in everybody's Top 5 piano players list but that's for a good reason. Herbie's music can be played on dancefloors, intimate listening settings, even covered to death by other bands and still retains its original soul.

And in terms of his career he's effectively Snoop Dogg, stayed relevant for nearly 60 years and survived each genre of music he's stepped into by being an innovator not a trend follower. Would be jokes if Herbie'ss next phase was as Herb Lion or something...

- - -

Kaidi Tatham

Shouts to Henry Wu for putting me onto this guys music, even just as a producer Kaidi is pushing boundaries and has his own sound. But then the keys playing just pushes it over the edge.

Big influence especially when I play with Maxwell Owin on the more dance-oriented side of life. Go listen to his new project 'It's A World Before You' it will change things for you.

- - -

Patrice Rushen

Patrice is the OG of jazz / funk / soul keyboard playing. Check out the album 'Prelusion', mad styles with a wicked band featuring Joe Henderson among others. Until I heard that album I'd only heard 'Forget Me Nots', so it blew my mind!

Mad solos, still funk but more open than the more popular records. That record had a big influence on the way I approached making 'Starting Today', the open attitude to track lengths and letting the music play out the length it should be.

- - -

Oscar Peterson

Oscar is my first ever real influence as a pianist. I think my Dad used to play me the his music just to scare me into practising to be honest. When you clock the dexterity he has it's something else. And the guy had a stroke halfway through his life, lost the ability to play and then relearned back to his original standard!

Big role model for life as well as playing; there's an amazing story about an Ella Fitzgerald gig Oscar was playing on, where some audience members were shouting abuse at Ella from the crowd. Oscar stopped the gig, went into the audience, tuffed up the guy and threw him out. Role model.

The Clancy Smith Ludwig Erhard Cigar Story, by David Henderson      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

One of the advantages of having been involved with free-market ideas for half a century (yikes—I’m getting old!) is that I’ve also become friends with people who were involved even longer, some famous, such as Milton Friedman, and some not famous, such as my mentor at the University of Winnipeg, Clancy Smith.

Clancy was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1977 and suspects that he had it as early as 1975. He is now in his early 70s and his mind and memory are still sharp. When I go to my cottage in Canada every year, I visit him near the start of the trip and near the end, and I always learn something.

That brings me to this story of a fun interaction between Clancy and the architect of the German economic miracle, Ludwig Erhard.

Erhard, who had moved on from being an economic adviser and decision maker in the late 1940s to being Chancellor of Germany in the early 1960s. In about 1973 or 1974, when he was no longer Chancellor, he gave a speech at the University of Manitoba. Clancy attended. Clancy, seeing Erhard with his body guards before the speech, went up to pay his respects and to get Erhard to autograph a picture he had of Erhard. Erhard obliged. Erhard was legendary for enjoying a good cigar. He reached in his jacket pocket for a cigar and found that he was out. At the time, Clancy enjoyed cigars too. He offered Erhard a $1.50 cigar in a plastic tube. Erhard accepted and lit up.

I forgot to ask Clancy whether he spoke to Erhard in German. Although his name wouldn’t suggest it, Clancy is Jewish. That didn’t stop him from finding German to be a beautiful language and studying German intensely at the University of Winnipeg.

By the way, although this 4-minute video of Erhard’s role in the German economic miracle is quite good, it contains a major mistake in the first minute. The narrator claims that hyperinflation had destroyed the value of the reichsmark. That’s false. Hyperinflation requires hyper increases in the money supply. As I point out in “The German Economic Miracle” in David R. Henderson, ed., The Concise Encyclopedia of Economics, in 1947, the amount of money in the German economy was 5 times the amount in 1936. That’s not enough to cause hyperinflation. What so badly hurt the value of the currency was that higher money supply combined with rigid economy-wide price controls.
