Taylor Report: A True Peace Dividend is Possible for Eritrea and Ethiopia, Segment 1 Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
The new Prime Minister of Ethiopia made a wise decision, and agreed to accept a peace agreement with Eritrea that had been on the table for 20 years. Now the question is how the superpowers (looking at you Washington) will react. Eritrea has weathered hostility and sanctions but continued to develop, a study in self-reliance.

[Ethiopian Herald] Recently, presidents of Eritrea and Somalia, Isaias Afwerki and Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed agreed to restore diplomatic ties and exchange ambassadors, ending the nearly 15 years of diplomatic hostility between the two countries. CEO of Gage College, Ethiopia, Visits USU Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

Utah State University leaders met with Moges Girma, CEO of Gage College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in July to discuss USU’s distance education program and sign a memorandum of cooperation. Girma visited several USU campuses over two days, including the Logan campus, USU Eastern-Price, USU-Salt Lake and USU-Brigham City.

Girma and two colleagues met with and presented proposals to USU leaders Janis Boettinger, vice provost and director of Global Engagement; Robert Wagner, vice president of Academic and Instructional Services (AIS); John Louviere, assistant vice president and executive director of AIS; Shelly Ortiz, international program coordinator in Global Engagement; Monika Galvydis, director of study abroad in Global Engagement; and Shannon Peterson, director of global programing in the Institute of Government and Politics. Louviere and Wagner provided a tour of the state-of-the-art distance education building, followed by a tour of the Merrill-Cazier Library from Jeanne Davidson, department head and associate dean of Instruction, Collections and Patrons.

Gary Straquadine, interim chancellor of USU Eastern, David Vernon, executive director of Salt Lake Education Center and Brad Wynn, director of USU’s professional MBA program, met with Girma and colleagues at their respective campuses to discuss the methods of delivering education at a distance.

“USU is a leader in Utah and the nation when it comes to providing distance education,” said Wagner. “It was a great opportunity to share our ideas and innovations to the GAGE College administration, in hopes that they can experience the same successes we have had.”

GAGE College, a private college in Ethiopia, offers degrees comparable to associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s in several categories. The college has five campuses around Addis Ababa, similar to a regional campus model, and has been consistently growing in admissions and programs offered. Girma is building partnerships and agreements with U.S. schools to grow GAGE College.

“GAGE College’s three pillars of teaching, research and community are in alignment with USU’s commitment to community. We look forward to working with Mr. Girma to build relationships, foster international growth and provide experiences for USU students and GAGE students,” said Boettinger.

Boettinger and Galvydis will work with GAGE College on a memorandum of cooperation that can lead to student exchange, international internships, and faculty-led study abroad programs. USU will continue to explore possible cooperation in distance education and open-source educational resources.

          Latest Releases from Vocalist Sofia Jernberg Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
By Eyal Hareuveni

Swedish, Ethiopian-born, Oslo-based vocal artist Sofia Jernberg needs no introduction. She calls herself a “maker of things” and she keeps doing a lot of beautiful things with Mats Gustafsson’s Fire! Orchestra, and countless free-improvisations meetings. She also did many interesting things with the Swedish-American Seval, with cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, and the Swedish-Norwegian-French quartet The New Songs. Jernberg continues to make exciting things with Gustafsson’s new group The End, and with the Norwegian experimental Lana Trio.

The End - Svårmod Och Vemod Är Värdesinnen (Rare Noise, 2018) *****

Take two of the wildest baritone sax heavyweights on our planet - Swedish Mats Gustafsson and Norwegian Kjetil Møster (whose resume spans from modern jazz groups as The Core and Trinity, through punk-jazz Ultralyd and Møster! to glam-rockers King Midas and Datarock); add the adventurous, avant-rocker, Deerhoof’s powerhouse drummer Greg Saunier (who enjoys improvising with guitarist Mary Halvorson and trumpeter Stephanie Richards) and throw into the mix Norwegian avant-noise-metal guitarist Anders Hana (from local groups MoHa!, Ultralyd and, Noxagt), who returned to musical activity after a seven-year sabbatical, and you already have enough ingredients for a super-exciting group, one that can reach apocalyptic climaxes in an instant. Still, the secret ingredient of this new group is Jernberg. Her strong presence seals the masculine maelstroms of fiery jazz, art rock, noise and poetic texts with a much needed feminine quality and emotional authority.

This potent dream team recorded its debut album, Svårmod Och Vemod Är Värdesinnen (in Swedish: dark melancholy and sadness are senses to be valued. This gory, suggestive titled is emphasized with the cover art by Edward Jarvis) in January 2018 in Bergen, Norway, after only three performances. Needless to say, the joint forces of Gustafsson and Møster with the baritone guitar of Hana and the propulsive drumming of Saunier promise raw, low-end onslaughts and boundless energy. Jernberg’s delivery - at times capricious, freewheeling wailing and on other times her one-of-a-kind singing-whispering-reciting charge the explosive mix with an urgent, even rebellious message of The End.

The album opens with two short pieces by Gustafsson and Hana. “Svårmod” offers everything you can expect from such group. Hana’s distorted-dirty, chainsaw guitar is in the center, embraced by the intense, baritone attacks of Gustafsson and Møster and the manic drumming of Saunier, while Jernberg screaming over this primordial lava. “Vemod” revolves around Hana’s hypnotic riff, that sound like a twisting West-African rhythmic rhythmic pattern with something catchy from the Captain Beefheart songbook, but already brings Jernberg wordless wailing to the center.

The End’s epic 14-minute “Translated Slaughter” is a completely different story. Jernberg acts, sighs, whispers and chants Gustafsson’s tortured-claustrophobic, stream-of-consciousness lyrics while Gustafsson and Møster are busy adding noisy, disturbing electronics. Hana deepens the dark atmosphere with assorted effects and Saunier keeps shaking this swampy ground with sudden attacks. Eventually, this pieces closes with a cathartic crescendo. Gustafsson’s “Don’t Wait” has a clearer - obvious - message (“...curiosity is the key, sharing is the key, don’t believe fuckin’ nothin’...”), and a familiar rhythmic structure, bringing to mind The Thing collaboration with vocalist Neneh Cherry (The Cherry Thing, Smalltown Supersound, 2012). The Jernberg thing offers her reciting-chanting the intuitive lyrics as half beat poet-half charismatic shaman, flirting majestically with the addictive, polyrhythmic pulse.

Møster’s brief interlude “Rich and Poor” serves as an introduction to his song “Both Sides Out”, a kind of requiem to post-Trump America that can be experienced psychoanalytic attempt to release the many demons from this tyrant’s deranged psyche. Jernberg continues to perform her shamanic duties, this time as an equal partner of The End’s brutal and terrifying cleansing ritual.

Only 44 minutes long but, no doubt, the best ones that you will spend in 2018.

Lana Trio with Sofia Jernberg (Clean Feed, 2018) ****

The experimental Norwegian Lana Trio - trombonist Henrik Munkeby Nørstebø, pianist Kjetil Jerve, and drummer Andreas Wildhagen, was formed in 2007. The trio managed to solidify in its first two albums a delicate balance between its intense, powerful interplay, an uncompromising search for new sounds and dynamics and a strong affinity for open-ended, non-idiomatic improvisations. Jernberg joined the trio for its third album, recorded on March 2016 in Halden, Norway, and performs now again with the trio after the release of the album.

Jernberg sounds as if she has been free-improvising with Lana Trio for ages. She fits organically in the wild yet loose chaos that Lana Trio keeps producing. But her operatic-eccentric delivery charges the focused interplay of the trio with an engaging, emotional depth/ Jernberg vocalizes wordless, seductive suggestions and uses her voice as an intriguing, subversive instrument.

Jernberg connection with Munkeby Nørstebø - who works with another experimental vocal artist, Audrey Chen, in the Beam Splitter - is almost telepathic. Both sound as have perfected their own imaginative, cryptic language. Wildhagen embraces these secretive talks with sudden, rhythmic eruptions while Jerve frames all with minimalist, percussive piano playing.

Each of the four free-improvised pieces focuses on a distinct strategy. The first one, “Ears Anciens”, is restless and urgent; the second, “Omnivore's Aperitif”, is enigmatic, sparse and surprisingly quiet; the third, “Ghost Training”, explodes with fiery flow of volcanic energy ; the fourth, “Solitude Chant”, concludes this wild ride with a mysterious, tempting ritual.

          Worse than 'Fake News': The Forced Conformity of the Media! Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

by Helga Zepp-LaRouche, Chairwoman of the German political party BüSo, the Civil Rights Solidarity Party. You can follow Helga on twitter @ZeppLaRouche.

The following is an English translation of an article appearing in the German newspaper, Neue Solidarität.

Aug. 4—We should have learned from the 1920s and 1930s that the spread of cultural pessimism throughout the population has fatal consequences. But such pessimism is spreading today in many Western societies, and especially in Germany, in the face of uncertain future options, with the result that more and more citizens have completely given up the hope of being able to make a difference through their own participation, or they are joining right-wing parties that provide an outlet for anger but offer no solutions. The culprit in this development is not least the political establishment, which leads us to accept a “TINA” politics—TINA is the acronym for “there is no alternative”—and the forced conformity of the mainstream media, which suppress all messages that point to alternatives.

We are living through what is probably the greatest strategic change of all time. Under the leadership of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), the majority of the developing countries are currently focussing on close win-win cooperation, with the aim of achieving the leap to the status of industrialized nations, and a good standard of living for their entire populations as quickly as possible. The 10th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg July 25-27 included some of the largest and most important international organizations of developing countries, such as the Group of 77, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Mercosur, and the African Union, which were there to join forces with the BRICS in what might be called the Global South initiative.

The New Silk Road is Changing Everything

China’s Belt and Road Initiative, and the idea that relations are no longer based on geopolitical confrontation but on mutual benefit, have changed the political climate in many regions of the world in a completely positive way. For example, the election victory of newly designated Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has created for the first time the potential to settle the conflict between India and Pakistan. Khan promised to ensure that his country takes two steps toward India for every step that India takes towards Pakistan. The cooperation between the BRICS countries also has its impact on Pakistan; China has traditionally good relations with Pakistan, and just now the Russian and Pakistani navies had a high-level meeting, after the first-ever joint manoeuvres of Russian and Pakistani ground troops took place just one year ago.

The Horn of Africa is also embraced by the new spirit of cooperation. There the hitherto mutually hostile states of Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea and Ethiopia are massively expanding their mutual diplomatic and economic relations, largely thanks to Chinese investment, such as in the construction of the railway from Djibouti to Addis Abeba.

And, in contrast to the consistently negative media coverage of the progress of negotiations between North and South Korea and the United States, this process is on a good track, with the option that a leading North Korean government official may speak in New York before the upcoming UN General Assembly in September.

Meanwhile, the Syrian government has begun the economic reconstruction of the province of Aleppo. The first part of a three-phase program is the reconstruction of the infrastructure, the second step is the specific provisioning of each individual family, and the third phase is the return of people to a safe environment, as the Deputy Governor of the province, Hamid Kenno, stressed. At the same time, the Russian military has helped create a refugee center in Syria that will welcome refugees returning from Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey, and assist them in their return to their homes. An inter-ministerial coordination committee of the Russian Foreign and Defense Ministries has taken over the orderly repatriation of the refugees.

You Aren't Hearing the Good News

One might assume that these developments would dominate headlines, immediately bringing hope to all clear-thinking people that world peace has become more secure, poverty can be overcome, and the refugee crisis can be resolved in a human way. Instead, the media do not say a word about the “Global South” initiative. An article in the German national daily, Die Welt, furnished with much geopolitical spin, cites Xi Jinping’s speech at the BRICS Summit: “Africa has more development potential than any other region in the world.” And what does the author conclude? That “China is working to build its empire” and the upcoming summit between China and the African nations in Beijing this September is just Xi Jinping’s “charm offensive.”

Of course, this censorship of good news has the purpose of depicting the politics of the old neo-liberal paradigm as having no alternative. If China—incidentally, along with India, Russia and Japan—now demonstrates that Africa can indeed be industrialized, and if that were truthfully reported, then someone might think to ask why the African continent, after centuries of colonialism and decades of the IMF’s notorious credit conditionalities, is in its current precarious state, and whether this is not a major cause of the refugee crisis.

Instead of responding to China’s repeated offer to work together with the African states on their industrialization in the context of the New Silk Road, the German government is blocking Chinese investments in Germany, such as the recent acquisition of the precision machinery manufacturer Leifeld Metal Spinning, although various surveys confirm that Chinese investors have always taken care to increase the number of jobs and raise wages. Where was the government’s veto when, in recent years, dozens of American and British hedge funds have taken everything from mid-sized companies to housing companies and infrastructure, carved out the choicest portions to sell, and closed down the rest as socially unacceptable?

It is an absurd idea to think that one could halt the rise of emerging and developing countries—India and China alone account for 2.6 billion people—and impose the neo-liberal model of geopolitics as the only possible option on the rest of the world. Blair’s and Obama’s policies of converting the whole world to Western democracy through regime change and “humanitarian” interventions, as a sort of modern crusade, have clearly failed. Neither China nor Russia wants this model, and more and more developing countries see the Chinese model as the model for their own development.

The reason is that the BRICS offer a form of cooperation that focuses on mutual development, while “the West” prefers the neo-liberal model of profit maximization for the few at the expense of the many. It is also not overlooked in the rest of the world that the EU is slipping into more and more disagreement between its member states, whether in dealing with the refugee crisis; in choosing between greater integration versus emphasis on sovereignty; or in relations with China, Russia and the United States.

Looking at the world through Eurocentric glasses obscures the view that the greater part of humanity, represented by the BRICS and Global South, has drawn from the neo-liberal policies of the West the conclusion that a revision of the current system of global governance is urgently needed, and that this reorganization cannot be left to the West.

Instead of arrogantly continuing to sit on the high horse of egoism in their supposed superiority and soon landing their own populations on the margins of history, the nations of Europe, and the United States, should look to the offers from China and Russia for cooperation and co-creation of the New Paradigm. Despite the punitive tariffs imposed by Trump, China continues to offer cooperation with the United States in order to overcome the trade deficit through joint ventures in third countries. A spokeswoman for China’s Ministry of Commerce has just said, “We always believe that bad things can be turned into good ones and challenges can be turned into opportunities.”

And at the just-ended ASEAN Summit in Singapore, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov recalled Putin’s words at the 2016 Russia-ASEAN Summit in Sochi, where he called on partner-countries to be aware of the huge geopolitical and geo-economic potential of the Eurasian continent, where the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the Shanghai Corporation Organization (SCO) and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) complement each other. Lavrov stressed that the door remains open to the EU, and no one should doubt that the EU should be interested in it purely for pragmatic economic and business interests.

But one could also find reasons for such cooperation that go beyond the pragmatic. If Europe does not want to completely forget, and lose, its humanistic and classical culture, then we could revive the ideas of Nicholas of Cusa, Leibniz and Schiller, and make our contribution to the development of humanity. You certainly will not read about it in the mainstream media. But you can read it here.

With family: Ruth 3–4; Acts 28

Ruth 3–4 (Listen)

Ruth and Boaz at the Threshing Floor

Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter, should I not seek rest for you, that it may be well with you? Is not Boaz our relative, with whose young women you were? See, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor. Wash therefore and anoint yourself, and put on your cloak and go down to the threshing floor, but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. But when he lies down, observe the place where he lies. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down, and he will tell you what to do.” And she replied, “All that you say I will do.”

So she went down to the threshing floor and did just as her mother-in-law had commanded her. And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain. Then she came softly and uncovered his feet and lay down. At midnight the man was startled and turned over, and behold, a woman lay at his feet! He said, “Who are you?” And she answered, “I am Ruth, your servant. Spread your wings1 over your servant, for you are a redeemer.” 10 And he said, “May you be blessed by the LORD, my daughter. You have made this last kindness greater than the first in that you have not gone after young men, whether poor or rich. 11 And now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you all that you ask, for all my fellow townsmen know that you are a worthy woman. 12 And now it is true that I am a redeemer. Yet there is a redeemer nearer than I. 13 Remain tonight, and in the morning, if he will redeem you, good; let him do it. But if he is not willing to redeem you, then, as the LORD lives, I will redeem you. Lie down until the morning.”

14 So she lay at his feet until the morning, but arose before one could recognize another. And he said, “Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing floor.” 15 And he said, “Bring the garment you are wearing and hold it out.” So she held it, and he measured out six measures of barley and put it on her. Then she went into the city. 16 And when she came to her mother-in-law, she said, “How did you fare, my daughter?” Then she told her all that the man had done for her, 17 saying, “These six measures of barley he gave to me, for he said to me, ‘You must not go back empty-handed to your mother-in-law.’” 18 She replied, “Wait, my daughter, until you learn how the matter turns out, for the man will not rest but will settle the matter today.”

Boaz Redeems Ruth

Now Boaz had gone up to the gate and sat down there. And behold, the redeemer, of whom Boaz had spoken, came by. So Boaz said, “Turn aside, friend; sit down here.” And he turned aside and sat down. And he took ten men of the elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down. Then he said to the redeemer, “Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, is selling the parcel of land that belonged to our relative Elimelech. So I thought I would tell you of it and say, ‘Buy it in the presence of those sitting here and in the presence of the elders of my people.’ If you will redeem it, redeem it. But if you2 will not, tell me, that I may know, for there is no one besides you to redeem it, and I come after you.” And he said, “I will redeem it.” Then Boaz said, “The day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you also acquire Ruth3 the Moabite, the widow of the dead, in order to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance.” Then the redeemer said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I impair my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption yourself, for I cannot redeem it.”

Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging: to confirm a transaction, the one drew off his sandal and gave it to the other, and this was the manner of attesting in Israel. So when the redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself,” he drew off his sandal. Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and to Mahlon. 10 Also Ruth the Moabite, the widow of Mahlon, I have bought to be my wife, to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brothers and from the gate of his native place. You are witnesses this day.” 11 Then all the people who were at the gate and the elders said, “We are witnesses. May the LORD make the woman, who is coming into your house, like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you act worthily in Ephrathah and be renowned in Bethlehem, 12 and may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring that the LORD will give you by this young woman.”

Ruth and Boaz Marry

13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And he went in to her, and the LORD gave her conception, and she bore a son. 14 Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day without a redeemer, and may his name be renowned in Israel! 15 He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is more to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.” 16 Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her lap and became his nurse. 17 And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.

The Genealogy of David

18 Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez fathered Hezron, 19 Hezron fathered Ram, Ram fathered Amminadab, 20 Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon, 21 Salmon fathered Boaz, Boaz fathered Obed, 22 Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.

Paul on Malta

28 After we were brought safely through, we then learned that the island was called Malta. The native people1 showed us unusual kindness, for they kindled a fire and welcomed us all, because it had begun to rain and was cold. When Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and put them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened on his hand. When the native people saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer. Though he has escaped from the sea, Justice2 has not allowed him to live.” He, however, shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm. They were waiting for him to swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But when they had waited a long time and saw no misfortune come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.

Now in the neighborhood of that place were lands belonging to the chief man of the island, named Publius, who received us and entertained us hospitably for three days. It happened that the father of Publius lay sick with fever and dysentery. And Paul visited him and prayed, and putting his hands on him, healed him. And when this had taken place, the rest of the people on the island who had diseases also came and were cured. 10 They also honored us greatly,3 and when we were about to sail, they put on board whatever we needed.

Paul Arrives at Rome

11 After three months we set sail in a ship that had wintered in the island, a ship of Alexandria, with the twin gods4 as a figurehead. 12 Putting in at Syracuse, we stayed there for three days. 13 And from there we made a circuit and arrived at Rhegium. And after one day a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli. 14 There we found brothers5 and were invited to stay with them for seven days. And so we came to Rome. 15 And the brothers there, when they heard about us, came as far as the Forum of Appius and Three Taverns to meet us. On seeing them, Paul thanked God and took courage. 16 And when we came into Rome, Paul was allowed to stay by himself, with the soldier who guarded him.

Paul in Rome

17 After three days he called together the local leaders of the Jews, and when they had gathered, he said to them, “Brothers, though I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans. 18 When they had examined me, they wished to set me at liberty, because there was no reason for the death penalty in my case. 19 But because the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar—though I had no charge to bring against my nation. 20 For this reason, therefore, I have asked to see you and speak with you, since it is because of the hope of Israel that I am wearing this chain.” 21 And they said to him, “We have received no letters from Judea about you, and none of the brothers coming here has reported or spoken any evil about you. 22 But we desire to hear from you what your views are, for with regard to this sect we know that everywhere it is spoken against.”

23 When they had appointed a day for him, they came to him at his lodging in greater numbers. From morning till evening he expounded to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets. 24 And some were convinced by what he said, but others disbelieved. 25 And disagreeing among themselves, they departed after Paul had made one statement: “The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet:

26 “‘Go to this people, and say,
  “You will indeed hear but never understand,
    and you will indeed see but never perceive.”
27 For this people's heart has grown dull,
    and with their ears they can barely hear,
    and their eyes they have closed;
  lest they should see with their eyes
    and hear with their ears
  and understand with their heart
    and turn, and I would heal them.’

28 Therefore let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen.”6

30 He lived there two whole years at his own expense,7 and welcomed all who came to him, 31 proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.

The Lord Is in His Holy Temple

To the choirmaster. Of David.

11   In the LORD I take refuge;
  how can you say to my soul,
    “Flee like a bird to your mountain,
  for behold, the wicked bend the bow;
    they have fitted their arrow to the string
    to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart;
  if the foundations are destroyed,
    what can the righteous do?”1
  The LORD is in his holy temple;
    the LORD's throne is in heaven;
    his eyes see, his eyelids test the children of man.
  The LORD tests the righteous,
    but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.
  Let him rain coals on the wicked;
    fire and sulfur and a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup.
  For the LORD is righteous;
  he loves righteous deeds;
    the upright shall behold his face.

The Faithful Have Vanished

To the choirmaster: according to The Sheminith.2 A Psalm of David.

12   Save, O LORD, for the godly one is gone;
    for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man.
  Everyone utters lies to his neighbor;
    with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.
  May the LORD cut off all flattering lips,
    the tongue that makes great boasts,
  those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail,
    our lips are with us; who is master over us?”
  “Because the poor are plundered, because the needy groan,
    I will now arise,” says the LORD;
    “I will place him in the safety for which he longs.”
  The words of the LORD are pure words,
    like silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
    purified seven times.
  You, O LORD, will keep them;
    you will guard us3 from this generation forever.
  On every side the wicked prowl,
    as vileness is exalted among the children of man.

Jeremiah 38 (Listen)

Jeremiah Cast into the Cistern

38 Now Shephatiah the son of Mattan, Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchiah heard the words that Jeremiah was saying to all the people: “Thus says the LORD: He who stays in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, but he who goes out to the Chaldeans shall live. He shall have his life as a prize of war, and live. Thus says the LORD: This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon and be taken.” Then the officials said to the king, “Let this man be put to death, for he is weakening the hands of the soldiers who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but their harm.” King Zedekiah said, “Behold, he is in your hands, for the king can do nothing against you.” So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king's son, which was in the court of the guard, letting Jeremiah down by ropes. And there was no water in the cistern, but only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud.

Jeremiah Rescued from the Cistern

When Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern—the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate—Ebed-melech went from the king's house and said to the king, “My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they did to Jeremiah the prophet by casting him into the cistern, and he will die there of hunger, for there is no bread left in the city.” 10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, “Take thirty men with you from here, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.” 11 So Ebed-melech took the men with him and went to the house of the king, to a wardrobe in the storehouse, and took from there old rags and worn-out clothes, which he let down to Jeremiah in the cistern by ropes. 12 Then Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Put the rags and clothes between your armpits and the ropes.” Jeremiah did so. 13 Then they drew Jeremiah up with ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

Jeremiah Warns Zedekiah Again

14 King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and received him at the third entrance of the temple of the LORD. The king said to Jeremiah, “I will ask you a question; hide nothing from me.” 15 Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I tell you, will you not surely put me to death? And if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.” 16 Then King Zedekiah swore secretly to Jeremiah, “As the LORD lives, who made our souls, I will not put you to death or deliver you into the hand of these men who seek your life.”

17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “Thus says the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: If you will surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then your life shall be spared, and this city shall not be burned with fire, and you and your house shall live. 18 But if you do not surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then this city shall be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape from their hand.” 19 King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Judeans who have deserted to the Chaldeans, lest I be handed over to them and they deal cruelly with me.” 20 Jeremiah said, “You shall not be given to them. Obey now the voice of the LORD in what I say to you, and it shall be well with you, and your life shall be spared. 21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is the vision which the LORD has shown to me: 22 Behold, all the women left in the house of the king of Judah were being led out to the officials of the king of Babylon and were saying,

  “‘Your trusted friends have deceived you
    and prevailed against you;
  now that your feet are sunk in the mud,
    they turn away from you.’

23 All your wives and your sons shall be led out to the Chaldeans, and you yourself shall not escape from their hand, but shall be seized by the king of Babylon, and this city shall be burned with fire.”

24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Let no one know of these words, and you shall not die. 25 If the officials hear that I have spoken with you and come to you and say to you, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; hide nothing from us and we will not put you to death,’ 26 then you shall say to them, ‘I made a humble plea to the king that he would not send me back to the house of Jonathan to die there.’” 27 Then all the officials came to Jeremiah and asked him, and he answered them as the king had instructed him. So they stopped speaking with him, for the conversation had not been overheard. 28 And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken.

          Comment on The Abiy Phenomenon by Girmay Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
Hi, Paulos thank you for bringing up European Renissance history. Many European intellectuals of that period attacked Europen feudal cultural values. That was the period when Europe successfully divorced feudal values. Ethiopia never had Ethiopian cultural Renissance period. Ethiopian intellecuals worship Ethiopia's feudal history. In my opnion Ethiopia and Eritrea will never establish sucessful political culture without cleansing the feudal values printed in our conscious.

Selam Aligaz: If Abiy criticized Islam the way it’s practiced in Gulf Arab countries, he is a hero to billions of Muslims in the world. If Abiy told that directly to the UAE crown prince, billions of Muslims are grateful. If Abiy made up the story in his address to Ethiopian Muslims in the US, he still spoke to their heart and practiced politics. I expect Abiy to fix whatever nuttiness IA expressed in his meeting with the Saudi official. He is Eritrea’s Minister of Fixing IA blunders. Didn’t you see how he fixed it in his meeting with UN sanctions committee and then, his delegate, fixed all insults the Eritrean delegate heaped on the UNSC? saay

His Fantiness and all:
...Tesfai and Sherif were dressed impeccably and they had that self-satisfied look that Asmarinos are famous for. When they meet you, they inspect you head-to-toe, taking mental notes to compare with some Asmarino ideal which, of course, you won’t measure up to because the ideal changes daily. Asmarinos know this, which is why they constantly laugh behind the back of every non-Asmarino. The cab driver didn’t feel comfortable at Bar Vittorio because he was not an Asmarino. He was sure that he was not one because (1)the average Asmarino knows about two hundred synonyms to the insult “Gerfaf” and the cab driver thought Gerfaf was a bus stop; (2)In talking with his male friends, he had never addressed them using female-gender-specific words; and (3) he had never said “Ketituni” or any of its derivatives, “ketitatni, ketiteya” Asmarinos spoke a strange hybrid of Tigrigna with a sprinkling of Arabic, English, Amharic, and Italian. When they want to say, “hi”, they may say “Alora” (Italian), “tadias” (Amharic) or “keif” (Arabic.) The cabbie had never developed that Tres Cool Attitude that Asmarinos are known for. The Tres Cool Attitude is an adamant refusal to be impressed by anything no matter how extraordinary and it is the zealous refusal to be humbled by anything no matter how holy or grave. As far as Asmarinos are concerned, nothing interesting goes on outside Asmara City Limits. That’s why the two most common Asmarino phrases which summarize the Tres Cool Attitude are “k’la gidefena bejaka, Y’akhi” (Oh, leave us alone, brother) and “nKali’ki belyo izi shiTara” (I am too smart for your wit.) But everyone needs a change of air so Tesfai and Sherif dragged themselves out of the bar,kicking and screaming, indignant that their leisurely Eritrea Profile reading was interrupted. “Oh, don’t worry about it,” the cabbie assured them, “Thanks to the magic of one party state, the paper is available on the radio under a different name: DimSi Hafash. And since we are going for a 30 kilometer drive, you will “read” about five pages.” ”But we have to come back by noon because, QuoSera alena.” they said. Ofcourse, thought the cabbie. Asmarinos always have quoSera, an appointment. Even if the quoSera is just to make another quoSera, by god, they have quoSera. With that, he took them for a short drive to the outskirts of Asmara, to a nameless Inda Shahi (Tea Room,)where the clientele are older, rural, illiterate andvisibly malnourished. Waiting for them there were Aboy Yusuf and Aboy Yosief, two men in their late sixties. Tesfai and Sherif joined them after instructing the cabbie to come back in about thirty minutes. Tesfai presented the letter to Aboy Yosief along with a brief update on American life.....
excerpt from “Asmarinos & Democracy”, October 7,2000 saay

Selam Horizon, I hope you are right that the Ethiopian leaders have the capacity to say NO at an appropriate time. It is really a trying ZEMEN. Part of the reason is everything is going on within a tent of a tent, that is how they operate. There is a lot, I mean lots and lots, we don't know. You mentioned Cohen. I remember reading his statement of encouragement to both sides. He is playing his game. I have another memory. (I hope the wrong moderator is not tending the store today.) It was Haile Selassie who always warned that the Red Sea is in the cross hairs of the Arabs to convert it into the an Arab Lake. For all practical purposes another of his prophesies have come true. Don't give up on hope.

A daily column on what the ALP have as a policy, supported by a local member, and how it has 'helped' the local community. I'll stop if I cannot identify a policy. Feel free to make suggestions. Contact me on FB, not twitter. I have twitter, but never look at it.

Gabrielle Williams was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Carers and Volunteers, working with the Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing and the Minister for Families and Children.

As part of the November 24th Vic election campaign I have a petition I want to bring before the Opposition Leader Matthew Guy. I believe Matthew will be the next premier of Victoria and so I am petitioning him as I raise the issues of Employment, Crime and Education in Dandenong. I am also seeking money for my campaign. I don't have party resources, and so my campaign is on foot, and on the internet. Any money I receive that is not spent on the campaign will go to Grow 4 Life. I am asking questions like "What do you love about Dandenong?" and "If you could change something in Dandenong to make it better, what would it be?" I'm not limiting the questions to state issues. I'm happy to discuss anything, and get things done.

I am a decent man and don't care for the abuse given me. I created a video raising awareness of anti police feeling among western communities. I chose the senseless killing of Nicola Cotton, a Louisiana policewoman who joined post Katrina, to highlight the issue. I did this in order to get an income after having been illegally blacklisted from work in NSW for being a whistleblower. I have not done anything wrong. Local council appointees refused to endorse my work, so I did it for free. Youtube's Adsence refused to allow me to profit from their marketing it. Meanwhile, I am hostage to abysmal political leadership and hopeless journalists. My shopfront has opened on Facebook.

Here is a video I made Big Heart

Big Heart is two stories, originally titled 'Beating Heart' and 'Broken Heart.'
Sam is 14 years old, and dreams of making it big in the world. Only thing is, he gets no respect at school or at home. He has friends that deal in drugs, and he thinks he might make a success of it, but then people begin to die and Sam needs to work fast to escape the hole he has dug himself.
David Daniel Ball, wrote and narrated this story. It was originally published in the 'Werewolves of Wynyard' collection.

Some things should not happen, but they do. Victoria's opposition leader, Matthew Guy had a dinner with a guy banned from a casino and the ALP are demanding he resign and accusing him of consorting with gangsters. The denunciation is almost funny coming from anyone connected with the CFMEU. Almost. There is something behind the attack that hasn't been widely circulated, partly because it is before a court and in all likelihood, many frontline ALP members of parliament will be forced to resign for abuse of power in office. It involves the Red Shirt Brigade who support ALP by handing out how to vote cards, door knocking, phoning constituents and so on. Red shirts are supposed to be volunteers, and by electoral office rules, if they are paid by members, are restricted to that member's area. Only ALP offices have been paying their red shirts sums like $48 an hour and they have been acting outside their jurisdiction. I'll quote Matthew Guy from parliament on 8th March 2017. "Mr GUY (Leader of the Opposition) — Premier, you lead a chaotic, scandal-ridden government and a party that has seen three ministers, a whip and two Presiding Officers all forced to resign: Steve Herbert from the Legislative Council chauffeured his dogs from one end of the state to the other; your two former Presiding Officers perpetrate the biggest expenses rort in Victorian political history; the massive red shirt rorting of electorate office budgets; and millions of dollars spent on legal fees trying to stop the Ombudsman investigating these rorts. On top of all of that, Premier, you have allowed yourself to be blackmailed by the United Firefighters Union and Peter Marshall. Premier, is your government chaotic, incompetent, negligent or all of the above?" There is a court investigating the Red Shirt Brigade issue, and it is due to report soon. And the ALP know the findings will be damning. And all the ALP can do is complain about a lobster dinner engaged in public?

At the battle of Lechfield in 955 Hungarians claimed to be Europeans, Germans disputed it, and won. In 991 at the Battle of Maldon, in Essex, Vikings faced Aethelred the Unready and won 3,300 Kg of silver. In 1270 Yekuno Amlak took the imperial throne of Ethiopia, restoring the Solomonic dynasty to power after a 100-year Zagwe interregnum. In 1316, the second battle of Athenry between Irish forces resulted in an Irish loss. No survivors wrote an account. Many lost their heads. In 1512, at the Battle of Saint-Mathieu, England's Henry VIII had a naval victory, but both the flagships blew up. Possibly the first engagement using port cannon. In 1519 Magellan set off on a round the world trip. He died en-route. His birthplace is disputed as to changeovers between Spain and Portugal. He might have been Palestinian. In 1628, Sweden built the magnificent Vasa, which sank twenty minutes into her maiden voyage. In 1675, desperate to know the correct time, the cornerstone to Royal Greenwich Observatory was laid. In 1776, the Declaration of independence reached London. In 1792 in the French Revolution Louis XVI was arrested and his entire bodyguard killed. The next year, the Musée du Louvre was opened. In 1846, the Smithsonian was chartered by the US Congress. In 1904 the Russians and Japanese faced off at the Battle of Yellow Sea and had a draw. In 1932, a meteorite weighing 5.1kg landed in Missouri. In 1948, Candid Camera made a tv debut a year after Candid Microphone began on Radio. In 1969, A day after murdering Sharon Tate and four others, members of Charles Manson's cult killed Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. In 1977, David Berkowitz was arrested, he was called the Son of Sam, and he had killed people at random. In 1981, the head of Adam Walsh was found. Adam was six years old and his death prompted his dad to start America's Most Wanted. In 1988, Reagan began paying compensation to living Japanese Americans detained in WW2 by signing the Civil Liberties act of 1988. #AusCensusFail16 is another humiliation for the Turnbull government. A Benghazi type announcement blamed hackers for the planned failure. The agile, nimble, clever Turnbull government spent millions of dollars demonstrating it could not be trusted to implement online elections. What ultimately happened was that people attempted to complete the forms after work, before the evening got underway. So about 7PM Eastern Standard time, just after Turnbull tweeted he had successfully lodged his contribution to the census, the system crashed and twenty six hours later is still down. The data will never now be completed. Important data needed for planning. The Turnbull government had no agenda. This is just one of many humiliations for Turnbull before his inevitable resignation. And it is a salient lesson for those who are thinking of voting for Hillary Clinton. She too has no agenda to better the people she wants to vote for her. Corruption is not a plan for improvement.

For some, at the moment, the Sex Party has more credibility.
=== from 2015 ===
ALP looks to have prospered through her abuse of power over the expenses scandal. To cap it off, the media protectors of the ALP have gloated. Claims are made that the new speaker will be fair, suggesting the previous one wasn't. But it was the ALP abusing power which got some four hundred evictions of her members under the previous speaker, Bronwyn Bishop. The attacks on Bishop, given that no one else is held to the same standard, is misogynistic. Tony Burke, as leader of opposition business locked horns with Bishop a lot and so he had a vested interest in lying to trash her career as Speaker. Burke and Shorten should resign, but instead get a poll bounce in their favour. One hopes that Mr Abbott is keeping this ace for an election.
From 2014
It looked like a stunt when Jason Clare announced an inquest into sports drugs and gambling. Clare was deflecting attention away from the leadership challenge within the ALP which outsiders called between Rudd and Gillard but which also included Wong, Combet, Shorten, Clare, Carr, and a half dozen other cowards. Apparently, nothing was meant to happen, although two major codes and a few clubs and many players and trainers were smeared, called drug cheats and or forced out of the game. It looks like politicians tried to railroad athletes into admitting guilt. In the US, Obama has done much the same, for similar reasons. No player in any sport has been found guilty of what Clare claimed was endemic to all sports. In related news, the ALP has no policy on anything, but opposes everything the government proposes. When the LNP were in opposition, they supported 80% of the legislation. But the difference is in the monitoring. ABC criticise the 18C backdown even as they denied the need for change.

Ethiopia, UAE agree to build oil pipeline linking Eritrea’s port city of Assab and Addis Ababa

By FBC

Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have agreed to build an oil pipeline linking Eritrea’s port city of Assab and Addis Ababa.

This was revealed today during a meeting between Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed and Reem Al Hashimy, UAE’s Minister of State for International Cooperation.

During the meeting, the two sides also discussed ways to implement previously concluded investment agreements, which among others, include development of real estate and resorts.

The two countries also agreed to conduct a study to build an oil pipeline linking the port of Assab and Ethiopia.

After the discussion, Reem Al Hashimy told Fana Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) that the UAE is keen to exploit the investment opportunities available in Ethiopia.

The peace deal reached between Ethiopia and Eritrea is a good opportunity for the UAE to invest in Ethiopia, she added.

Two neighbors hold fifth round of military talks in Sudanese capital Khartoum

By Mohammed Amin | Anadolu Agency

The Egyptian and Sudanese militaries have agreed to work together to ensure Red Sea security, fight against terrorism and secure their shared borders.

The agreement was struck during the fifth round of Sudan-Egypt military talks, which kicked off in Khartoum on Monday with the participation of both countries’ military chiefs of staff.

After the talks, Egyptian army chief Mohamed Farid Higazi told reporters that the two sides had agreed to step up security cooperation following the recent reconciliation between Ethiopia and Eritrea and a new peace deal between South Sudan’s warring camps.

“We also agreed on the need to safeguard the Red Sea in a way that guarantees our mutual interests,” Higazi said.

“We also plan to work together in the training, military manufacturing and intelligence fields,” he added.

Sudanese Army Chief-of-Staff Kamal Abdul Maaroof, for his part, told reporters that the two sides also planned to step up coordination in the fight against terrorism, illegal migration and human trafficking.

Relations between Egypt and Sudan have improved since Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir visited Cairo in March.

The visit was reciprocated by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, who paid a visit to Sudan last month.

          UAE plans oil pipeline from Ethiopia to Eritrea in latest Horn of Africa move Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
The United Arab Emirates plans to build an oil pipeline connecting Eritrea and Ethiopia, the latest sign of the Gulf states increasing involvement in the Horn of Africa.The pipeline will run from Eritreas port city of Assab to Ethiopias capital Addis Ababa, an Ethiopian official said.Landlocked Ethiopia began extracting crude oil on a test basis from reserves in the countrys southeast in June and will need access through Eritrea in order to export it.Ethiopian broadcaster Fana first reported the pipeline plan earlier on Friday following a meeting in Addis Ababa between Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Reem Al Hashimy, the UAEs minister of state for international cooperation.The UAE played a behind-the-scenes role in helping Ethiopia and Eritrea end a two-decade state of war last month, Reuters reported this week.Hashimy, who last month publicly referred to herself as the UAEs policy lead on sub-Saharan Africa, said after meeting Abiy that the UAE is keen to exploit investment opportunities in Ethiopia, a country of 100 million people with the fastest growing economy in Africa, Fana reported.Abiys chief of staff, Fitsum Arega, told Reuters that the talks were largely on investment in industries, agriculture, real estate, (the) oil pipeline, (and) resorts.Most are under study, Fitsum said in a text message.REGIONAL RIVALRYThe UAE is also driven by a fear that rivals such as Iran or Qatar could gain a foothold. Both Qatar and Turkey are strong supporters of Somalias government. Earlier this year ties frayed between Mogadishu and Abu Dhabi and the two countries ended a UAE military training programme in Somalia.Abu Dhabi has a military base in Assab which it uses in its military campaign in the war in Yemen, located just across the Red Sea.Saudi Arabias Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir arrived in Addis Ababa on Thursday and met with Abiy, although there were no detailed announcements from the meeting.Last month, Reuters reported that Ethiopia had asked Saudi Arabia for a years supply of fuel with payment delayed for 12 months to ease severe foreign currency shortages.Eritreas foreign minister and a close adviser to President Isaias Afkwerki arrived in Ethiopia on Friday to discuss progress on implementing the agreement they signed last month.The rapprochement ended Africas longest major military stalemate and holds great potential for both economies, which were held back by the no war, no peace status quo.Though the two countries have re-opened embassies in each others capital and resumed flights, details ranging from border demarcation to war reparations have not been worked out. Ethiopian Coffee Ritual Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

Date: August 16, 2018

The Ethiopian coffee ceremony is an important part of Ethiopian culture. It involves roasting coffee beans and preparing boiled coffee in a special vessel akin to the ibriks used to make Turkish coffee.

In parts of Ethiopia, the woman of the house (or a younger woman in the household) performs or participates in the two- to three-hour coffee ceremony three times each day (once in the morning, once at noon, and once in the evening). The coffee ceremony is considered to be the most important social occasion in many villages, and it is a sign of respect and friendship to be invited to a coffee ceremony. Guests at a ceremony may discuss topics such as politics, community, and local issues. There is also abundant praise for the ceremony's performer and the brews she produces. Regardless of the time of day, occasion (or lack thereof) and guests invited, the ceremony usually follows a distinct format, with some variations.

The garden will be putting on an coffee ceremony and it will be led by our Ethiopian garden committee member Hadi. There will be popcorn for snacking on during the coffee ceremony. The garden is committed to uplifting and highlighting cultural practices from around the world and we are honored to be able to offer this ancient and sacred Ethiopian cultural experience to our community and fellow New Yorkers. Please stop on by August 16 and partake in the coffee ceremony yourself.

If you want milk and sugar for the beverage please bring your own. Traditionally, in Ethiopia milk and sugar is not offered during the ceremony and we will not have any. Come experience this unique event with your family and friends.

Natalie Dormer has made a killing as Margaery Tyrell on ‘Game of Thrones’ and now she’s joining a different world of magic – The Potterverse. However, the actress won’t be getting in front of a camera for this one as she is slated to narrate ‘A History of Magic.’ This new Harry Potter Original is coming to Audible and being published by Pottermore Publishing. In ‘A History of Magic’ we’ll see “stories from throughout Magic’s history and how some of its ancient objects, manuscripts, and spells influenced J.K. Rowling in her creation of Hogwarts and the Harry Potter series.” This sounds like the perfect treat for fans of Rowling’s work who want to see what helped inspire her to craft this fantastic universe. While I am excited to see Dormer working in the Potterverse, part of me wishes it would be in one of the future films and not just narrative work. The official synopsis of ‘A History of Magic’ is below: Throughout Harry Potter: A History of Magic, Dormer leads listeners through an audio journey like no other, delving into real-world magical texts and artifacts. Upheaval in Somali Region Tests Ethiopian PM’s Ability to Unify Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
Tension is still running high in Ethiopia’s Somali region after federal and regional forces engaged in clashes last week that killed at least 29 people, leading to the resignation of the regional president. A temporary successor has been named, and a semblance of normalcy has returned to Jijiga, the regional capital. But the flare-up raises important legal and political questions about Ethiopia’s system of government, known as ethnic federalism, in which the country’s nine states are defined largely by ethnicity. And the aftermath will challenge Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s ability to turn inspiring rhetoric into real change for communities that have endured years of violence, according to experts on the region. Inevitable showdown Friction between the federal and Somali regional governments has been building since April, when Abiy became prime minister. His reformist vision for the country — which has already led to a historic reconciliation with longtime foe Eritrea — put him at odds with Somali Regional President Abdi Illey, who is known for ruling his territory with an iron fist. Attempts to negotiate a path forward faltered, according to Zecharias Zelalem, an Ethiopian journalist who writes for OPride.com, a news site focused on the neighboring Oromia region. Conflict erupted a week ago when Abdi ordered Liyu police, a special force under his command, into Dire Dawa, a federal city outside the Somali region’s jurisdiction. That was an “illegal act,” Safia Aidid, a researcher and expert on the region, told VOA. Federal forces responded by confronting the Liyu and entering Jijiga on August 4, leading to dozens of deaths and displacing hundreds of people, according to various media reports. Across the region, Abdi is deeply unpopular, but Somali region residents reacted negatively to the federal takeover of Jijiga. There are also questions about whether the federal government’s actions were constitutional. Ongoing conflict The clash in Jijiga is just the latest incident of conflict in the region, where armed militant groups have for years instigated violence and attacked local populations. Unrest has been so severe that close to 1 million people in the region have been displaced from their homes since April, according to the United Nations. Much of the violence has played out along ethnic lines between Somali and Oromo people, although most residents simply want to live in peace. Following the confrontation in Jijiga, Ethiopian Defense Ministry spokesperson Mohamed Tesema said efforts are underway to restore peace in the region. “The main roads in Jijiga are seeing some movements now, and some of the shops on the roads are reopening,” he said. Federal forces have entered Degehabur, Kebri Dahar and other nearby cities and are working to calm situations across the Somali region, the spokesperson added. But residents in Jijiga told VOA that their lives have been upended by the conflict. “I can say that almost 95 percent of the people [in the city] are self-employed,” a husband and father of three told VOA’s Amharic service. “All of the people have lost their companies, and their money has been looted.” Other residents described dire living conditions. “The entire city is destroyed and there is nothing left,” another resident told VOA. New tests Even as humanitarian concerns deepen, events unfolding in the Somali region may set precedents in other parts of the country. Experts question the constitutionality of both the federal and regional governments’ moves, and the long-term effects of this past week’s actions could redefine the power structure between the nine regions and the central government. “The meaning of the federal system and how the regions relate to the federal government has been called into question,” Aidid said. Since assuming office, Abiy has garnered accolades for his uplifting, inclusive rhetoric and his tangible strides toward democratization. His language of unity has resonated with many Ethiopians, and his efforts to forge regional peace may have far-reaching repercussions. But some of the country’s fissures run deep, and it’s important to look beyond symbolic language to substantive change, Aidid said. That includes addressing what’s led to inequity that has lasted for generations. “Marginalized groups like Somalis, whose relationship to Ethiopia, historically, has been one of exclusion,” must be considered, Aidid said, and there are questions about whether this group is really part of the new Ethiopia. Rebuilding trust and addressing issues affecting Somalis will be a critical task for the prime minister, Aidid added, particularly since he has not yet resolved the displacement happening in the region. New opportunities Abdi’s replacement is part of a new generation of leaders. Ahmed Abdi Mohamed is in his early 30s and was most recently the Somali region’s minister of finance. A well-educated member of the Ethiopian Somali People’s Democratic Party (ESPDP), Ahmed has also made inflammatory remarks on social media. But the new leader can chart a new path, despite his close ties to the existing power apparatus, according to Aidid. He’ll have opportunities to do things differently and will likely find an ally in Abiy if he chooses a path of reform. Ahmed will lead on an interim basis for two months, until the party has a chance to formally restructure. Both Oromos and Somalis have called on the federal government to rein in armed groups and restore law and order, underscoring the need for regional and federal authorities to work together to address the ongoing violence. Eskinder Firew contributed to this report.

Prevalence of malaria in Woreta town, Amhara region, Northwest Ethiopia over eight years.

BMC Public Health. 2018 Aug 08;18(1):990

Authors: Alelign A, Tekeste Z, Petros B

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Data on trends in malaria prevalence is significant to assist efforts in the control and prevention of the disease. This retrospective study was, therefore, aimed to determine the prevalence of malaria in Woreta town, northwestern Ethiopia over 8 years.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in Woreta town, northwestern Ethiopia, from November to January 2013. Eight years (2005 to 2012) health center record of malaria cases was reviewed. Odds ratio (OR) was used to determine trend in malaria prevalence with respect to age, sex and Plasmodium species. P-values less than 0.05 were considered to be statistically significant.
RESULTS: From 2005 to 2012, a total of 102,520 suspected cases of malaria were reported at Woreta health center. Of these, 33,431 (32.6%) were microscopically confirmed to be positive for the disease. Among these positive cases, 17,700 (52.9%) and 15,731 (47.1%) were males and females, respectively. Children less than 5 years old were 1.3 times more likely to be infected by malaria than those with 5-15 years ([OR]; 1.3, 95% confidence interval [CI]; 1.26-1.34, p < 0.001). There was higher percentage (69.7%) of Plasmodium falciparum infection than Plasmodium vivax (26.5%); and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). There was fluctuation in yearly malaria prevalence with a minimum of 7% in 2008 and maximum of 47% in 2005.
CONCLUSIONS: The present study revealed that malaria continued to be one of the major public health problems in Woreta town, northwest Ethiopia. Moreover, there was no successive yearly reduction in its prevalence. Therefore, efforts are required to reduce the disease burden through continuous monitoring and evaluation of control measures in the study area.

Our purposely informal, not modern, typical Ethiopian website design has been favored as the best comforting entertainment website design by many Ethiopian visitors worldwide. Every content of design on our website, including the Ethiopian made players, is carefully studied and tested, so it was not a coincidental creation. That's why it got a very positive psychological impact for homesick diaspora Ethiopians looking for a substitute to comfort their yearning.

Many of our visitors frequently ask regarding our audio music collections:

Why do we not add every song? The answer is simple:

PlanetEthiopia.com does not do mass uploads because we value Ethiopian art, whether it is music or film, of its quality but not of its quantity, so we carefully review and select the medias before we post them.

Why we give away the sophisticatedly created virtual gifts instead of selling them?

The giveaways are just “thank you gifts” for our loyal visitors, criticizers, feedback givers, who help us improve our website. The gifts serve also as promotion and advertising strategy for our website.

Enjoy your stay!
