          Deadline day round-up: Everton shop in Barcelona, busy Fulham welcome five      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Everton and Fulham stole the show on the Premier League's transfer deadline day, as both clubs welcomed several eye-catching signings. Marco Silva's Everton looked to be heading into the 2018-19 season having only strengthened with Richarlison and Lucas Digne, but on Thursday they found agreements with Barcelona for Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes, while Brazil international Bernard signed on a free transfer following his Shakhtar Donetsk departure. Colombia defender Mina, who impressed in the World Cup, could eventually cost €31.75million, while Gomes arrives on a season-long loan. Fulham also made some potentially smart signings, with Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Argentina international Luciano Vietto arguably chief among them - the latter joining on loan from Atletico Madrid with an option to buy. #VIVAVIETTO pic.twitter.com/NexLbhIdQe — Fulham Football Club (@FulhamFC) August 9, 2018 Following Vietto to Craven Cottage from Spain is his former Sevilla team-mate Sergio Rico, who also joins on a temporary deal, but Fulham do not have a purchase clause for the Spain international. Left-back Joe Bryan secured a reported £7m switch from Bristol City after a strong season in the Championship and will hope to form a strong partnership with the highly rated Ryan Sessegnon, while Timothy Fosu-Mensah strengthens Fulham on the right side of defence following a loan departure from Manchester United. All of the Everton and Fulham dealings materialised close to the deadline, while the early stages of the day were dominated by Chelsea, who confirmed Mateo Kovacic's arrival after signing Kepa Arrizabalaga late on Wednesday. Chelsea made Kepa the world's most expensive goalkeeper at £71million and Kovacic joined on loan from Real Madrid. Wolves have enjoyed a very successful close-season on the transfer front and they wrapped things up by bringing in Belgium international Leander Dendoncker on loan. #WelkomLeander  pic.twitter.com/HX8ckUKHLu — Wolves (@Wolves) August 9, 2018 By contrast, fellow promoted side Cardiff City had endured a poor transfer window in the eyes of many after missing out on several targets, but they at least bolstered their midfield options with Harry Arter and Victor Camarasa on Thursday. It was also a good day for Leicester City, who, not only managed to keep hold of Harry Maguire amid reported interest from United, but also brought in the well-regarded young defender Caglar Soyuncu from Freiburg, tied Jamie Vardy down to a new deal and signed Croatia Under-21 international Filip Benkovic. Brighton and Hove Albion secured defensive reinforcement in the shape of former Barcelona right-back Martin Montoya, who joins from Valencia on a four-year deal. Much has been made of Newcastle United's reported internal issues in recent weeks, but they at least signed Federico Fernandez from Swansea City, who also lost Jordan Ayew to Crystal Palace. We're delighted to announce @jordan_ayew9 has joined #CPFC  on a season-long loan!#AyewReady  https://t.co/7jHjvAkaXZ pic.twitter.com/kt0QSrzqio — Crystal Palace F.C. Besiktas are ready to sell centre-back Domagoj Vida to Arsenal in a cut-price £18m deal but we still need to offload some fringe players to afford the transfer. I don't think we should buy him.

History-seeking Croatian discus queen Perkovic in a league of her own

Croatia's Sandra Perkovic has completely dominated women's discus throwing over the past years and can now become the first athlete to win five European titles in one event.
Croatian discus queen Sandra Perkovic must arguably be the biggest favourite in any event at the European championships as she can seemingly only beat herself in her bid for the history books.
The 28-year-old has two world titles, two Olympic golds, and enters Saturday's final with nine throws further than her nearest continental rival, German Claudia Vita, this year.
Perkovic's 71.38m from May 4 in Doha - just three centimetres shy of her lifetime best - is more than six metres beyond Vita's best 2018 throw of 65.30m.
Qualifying Thursday in Berlin's Olympic Stadium followed this pattern as Perkovic needed just one throw to beat the required 58.50m with 64.54m - three metres further than the next best, German Shanice Kraft (61.13m).
No wonder the third German in the final, Nadine Mueller, conceded that the event is really only about the minor medals.
"Gold is clearly gone. But silver and bronze are possible, we are looking at these places," Mueller said.
If Perkovic wins she will become the first athlete to win five European titles in one discipline but she is keeping her feet firmly on the ground.
"I do not want to think about making history and winning another title," she said after qualifying.
"It is always nice to qualify with the first throw. I do not like these qualifications too much because the qualification standard is low below my standard and I do not want to look like it is like nothing."
This just shows that she is in a league on her own, and still far from tired of it all despite having won everything in her sport.
"I can do what I love to do. I enjoy every minute of training," she said Sunday where she also acknowledged that winning a fifth title would mean a lot to her after all.
"There is nothing bigger than to be the first to have five golds in one event," she said, but also warned that "it will be tough" against other "very good competitors."
Perkovic, who served a six-month ban for a doping rules violation in 2011, joins a list of accomplished Croatian athletes such as high jumper Blanka Vlasic, skiers Janica and Ivica Kostelic and tennis players Goran Ivanisevic and Marin Cilic.
She is a six-time reigning Sportswoman of the Year in her country but also realizes that there is one thing that matters even more in Croatian sport - the stunning run of the nation's football team at the World Cup in Russia even though it lost the final to France last month.
"Football is number one. I am so proud of our guys. They did an amazing job, there has never been a greater result in our country," Perkovic said.

          Chelsea signs goalkeeper for record $91M      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

English Premier League clubs were scrambling Thursday to finalize their squads for the new season.

The deadline for transfers to English top flight clubs ends at 5 p.m. BST (12 p.m. EST) Thursday, with the 2018/2019 season starting on Friday.

In the rest of Europe the transfer window closes on August 31. Premier League clubs can still sell and loan players to other sides during this time. The transfer window reopens in January 1, 2019.

In a world-record transfer fee for a goalkeeper, Chelsea signed Kepa Arrizabalaga for £71.6 million ($91 million) from Spain's Athletic Bilbao.

The 23-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge on a seven-year deal to replace Thibaut Courtois, who is set to join Real Madrid.

Chelsea has also signed Croatia midfielder Mateo Kovacic, 24, on loan from Real Madrid for the upcoming season.

The Kepa transfer surpasses the $68 million Liverpool paid for Alisson in July and the $75 million Chelsea spent on striker Alvaro Morata last summer.

"It's a very important decision for me, for my career, and also for my personal life," said Kepa in a statement on the Chelsea website.

"So many things attracted me to the club, all the titles the club has won, the other players, the city, the English Premier League. It's an accumulation of things, and I am very glad Chelsea has decided to trust me and to take me in as well."

Kepa, who won his sole Spain cap last November, played 30 times for Athletic Bilbao last season, keeping seven clean sheets.

The Spanish No.2 will train with Chelsea Thursday in preparation for a potential Premier League debut against Huddersfield Saturday.

"Kepa is a talent we have admired for a long time and we are extremely excited about his arrival," added Marina Granovskaia, director of Chelsea FC.

"He has already demonstrated fantastic quality and consistency and will be a big part of any success Chelsea have in the coming years.

"His long-term contract reflects the belief we have in him and we look ahead to the coming seasons with an enormous sense of optimism."

Kovacic, who played five games during Croatia's run to the World Cup final this summer, said of his arrival at Chelsea: "I am really happy and excited to be here at Chelsea. It is an amazing feeling.

"I will try to do my best for this club. It is a new league for me, the beginning is always tough but I am sure the coach and my new team mates will help me and I am looking forward to a great season."

Meanwhile leading football agent Jon Smith believes the Premier League "jumped the gun" by closing its transfer window earlier than other European leagues.

"We tested the water with both feet and I think we are drowning a little bit," Smith told CNN Sport's Amanda Davies.

"If Juventus wanted to push the envelope they have got three or four hours to figure out the replacement, whereas Barcelona could wait around for the next three weeks and make their minds up.

"The emphasis and the swing of power -- if you like -- in the trading window has now swung to Europe this year."

          Madrid would struggle to replace Inter target Modric - Jarni      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Following reports Luka Modric has asked to leave Real Madrid for Inter, former Croatia international Robert Jarni says the Champions League holders would find it difficult to replace the midfielder. Modric is said to have been offered a lucrative contract to leave the Spanish capital for Serie A, raising the possibility of the 32-year-old treading a similar path to that of former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, who left to join Juventus earlier in the transfer window. But Jarni, who won 81 Croatia caps and spent a season at the Santiago Bernabeu in the late 1990s, believes Madrid will be reluctant to let another key player go. "We know what the market is like," he told Cadena SER. "I did not believe in the voices [that said he would leave]. "I know he likes Madrid a lot and the club does not have a player who can replace him." Madrid have already allowed Mateo Kovacic to join Chelsea on loan for a season and - should Modric stay put - Jarni believes the Premier League switch will be of huge benefit to another of Croatia's World Cup stars. "Kovacic has a lot of talent but we have been waiting for him for two years," added Jarni. "He can be a footballer who goes a long way but he is not getting enough minutes and, with Luka at Madrid, he will not get them."

A side-splittingly funny summer read about two best friends who decide to take a chance and travel the world, finding themselves – and finding love – along the way!

Until a few weeks ago, Leanne was a thirty-something who lived with her mother. And yes, she still slept under her Barbie bedspread.

Until recently, Maddy was married to a man whose golf club got more action than she did.

But not anymore.

Leanne and Maddy (and their miniature poodle Bridget) have packed their suitcases and bid goodbye to their dreary lives for the summer. After winding along Italy’s sun-dappled Adriatic Coast in a shiny red convertible, sailing around Croatia’s gorgeous Dalmatian Islands awaits them.

Days splashing around in sparkling turquoise waters and wine-fuelled nights under the stars are every girl’s dream. But with a devilishly handsome Italian on board, old flames to get over and holiday flings to contend with, there’s plenty of drama ahoy. One thing’s for certain, Leanne and Maddy’s trip promises to be a holiday to remember…
A Holiday To RememberA Holiday To Remember by Susanne O'Leary

I was thinking this would be a fun, humor filled read since its said to be a romantic comedy but I didn't see that. Okay, some of it was a bit quirky but nothing that had me laughing out loud so I didn't get that "side-splitting feeling".

What I did see was two friends on a life changing Holiday. Meeting new people, making new life alternating decision and finding what they really want out of life. The road trip/sail adventure turned into a personal a trip of personal discovery.

This is one of those feel good, grab your friend and have an adventure type reads.

I received this ARC copy of A Holiday To Remember from Bookouture. This is my honest and voluntary review. A Holiday To Remember is publication date August 15, 2018.

          The War of 08.08.08 and Ten Years of Struggle for Russian Sovereignty      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

The War of 08.08.08 and Ten Years of Struggle for Russian Sovereignty
August 09, 2018
In reality, those processes that we now observe didn’t arrive “suddenly”, but developed (and were being prepared) over a long period of time.
And although on August 8th, 2018, it is ten years since 08.08.08, we will start the conversation with other events.
Because officially it is a completely different date, namely February 10th, 2007 – the Munich speech of Putin, that can be considered as the official beginning of events that followed. Where he, for the first time, described for the entire planet:
  • the injustice of the existing global system;
  • the fact that China already overtakes the US, and BRIC overtakes the EU;
  • the inevitability of the end of the unipolar world;
  • the need to put an end to the arbitrariness of the US, which leans on brute force;
  • his disagreement with injustice.
If to look at the video, it is possible to see that many in the hall smiled and thought that Putin jokes (how can it be possible to protest against American hegemony – it’s unheard of!). But he wasn’t joking.
It is clear that this speech of Putin was not spontaneous, and it was preceded by big preparation (removing semibankirschina from power, cancellation of the Production Sharing Agreement, reforming the army, and so on). But most laypeople think in the category “if I don’t see something, then it does not exist”.
That’s why the events on August 8th, 2008 were a surprise for them.
On August 8th the American puppet Mikheil Saakashvili, who came to power in Georgia as a result of an illegal coup (called by propagandists as the “Rose Revolution”), ordered his troops – armed and trained according to NATO standards (and on American money) – to perform a punitive operation against the inhabitants of South Ossetia, having started to massively shell the capital of the republic – Tskhinvali.
In the city there were Russian peacekeepers, which had a UN mandate, and such aggression, according to the plan of the American owners of Saakashvili, had to show Russia “its place”. But something went astray.
According to the plan (approved, among other things, by the former Minister of Defence of Georgia Irakli Okruashvili), the Georgian army had to firstly carry out the large-scale bombing of Tskhinvali and the surrounding villages by means of long-range artillery and MLRS, and then, after defeating the not numerous Ossetian army (in total about 3,000 people), to start ethnic cleaning.
In order to implement this plan the US developed a large-scale program of training the Georgian army – its main focus was on “anti-insurgent actions”.
In particular, the British “Financial Times” newspaper openly wrote that 80 Georgian special forces members were trained by American instructors by the order of the Pentagon according to a program that was tested in Croatia in 1995 within the framework of the operation of the Croatian armed forces for the capture of Serbian Krajina. The FT noted that this operation was one of the worst episodes of ethnic cleaning in the history of the Yugoslavian war (since Vietnam the Americans have had a wide experience of war against a peaceful and unarmed population, much like their current Banderist lackeys).
During Saakashvili’s reign, Georgia increased its military budget by 30-fold (at the same time, ordinary Georgians outside the capital survived on $30-40 a month, which is below the norms of the UN for absolute poverty). If in 2003 military expenses of the state budget of Georgia were $30 million (0.7% of GDP), then in 2007 it was already $940 million (8% of GDP). For comparison, now in NATO the standard is 2%, and even this is too much for the majority of member countries, which thus don’t implement it).
In 2008 the military expenses of Georgia totalled $990 million, which exceeded a quarter of the entire state budget of this poor country! All of this, of course, was done contrary to the interests of ordinary Georgians and at their expense.
At the same time, Georgia received some weapons from Ukraine by bypassing standard procedures. It happened at the personal order of Viktor Yushchenko – one more American puppet (who also came to power as a result of a “soft” coup d’etat inspired by the US).
But all of this preparation didn’t help.
It should be noted that the Ossetian conflict was preceded by the illegal recognition of the independence of Kosovo. On February 17th, 2008 the independence of Kosovo was declared, and on the next day it was recognised by a number of the countries – first of all, the US.
The recognition of the independence of Kosovo caused an extremely negative reaction in the leadership of Russia, President Putin at the summit of the CIS countries on February 22rd said:
“The Kosovo precedent is a horrifying precedent. <…> Those who do it don’t foresee the results of what they do. Finally, this is a double-edged sword, and the second edge will one day hit them on the head”.
Since the end of July, 2008 the Georgian army starts to shell the settlements of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Since August 1st the Prime Minister of South Ossetia Yury Morozov starts the partial evacuation of the residents of Tskhinvali.
On August 7th the Georgian army tried to occupy Prisi heights around Tskhinvali, but this attack was repelled. On the same day the American ambassador in Georgia John Tefft reported to Washington that the troops of Georgia, including units with MLRS “Grad”, move in the direction of South Ossetia.
In the afternoon of August 7th, 2008 the secretary of the Security Council of South Ossetia Anatoly Barankevich stated:
“The activity of Georgian troops is observed along the entire border with South Ossetia. All of this says that Georgia starts large-scale aggression against our republic“.
At 2 o’clock in the morning on August 8th, 2008 the Georgian army, hoping that Russia won’t react to aggression during the Olympic Games, started an offensive.
On the morning of August 8th the commander of Georgian “peacekeepers” Mamuka Kurashvili called the actions of Georgia in South Ossetia “an operation on restoring constitutional order in the Tskhinvali region”. Later, in October, 2008, during enquiries into the August events in the Georgian parliament, Kurashvili stated that his words were impulsive and weren’t authorised by the top political leadership of Georgia (they always start trembling when the time comes to answer).
Later, Saakashvili tried to lie by saying that the war started after “the offensive of Russian troops from the territory of Ukraine”. By this he implied the departure of ships of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation from Sevastopol, which took place several days before the beginning of the Georgian offensive (in general, they regularly depart ports for raids, and there is never any aggression).
Also, Saakashvili lied by saying that “the president of Ukraine Yushchenko tried to stop by his decree the Black Sea Fleet, but Russia ignored it”. In reality, Yushchenko’s decree appeared only on August 13th, i.e., 5 days after the beginning of the war, and already after the President of Russia Medvedev officially announced the termination of the military operation aimed at coercive peacemaking.
Having gobbled up his tie, overdosed on cocaine, changed his pants after fleeing from the“invisible Russian jets”, and again overdosed on cocaine, Saakashvili raved that:
  • “the Georgian army forced Russian generals to flee from the battlefield for the first time since World War II” (I am not joking, he spurted this out in all seriousness);
  • “95% of the efficient part of the Armed Forces of Russia fought against Georgia”;
  • “the 58th Russian army was actually burned by the 4th Georgian brigade”;
  • “when the 58th army was defeated, Russia used ground and air forces. They fired more than half their ‘Iskander’ ammo”;
  • and so on.
In general, Saakashvili is a worthy colleague of the alcoholic Poroshenko in terms of killing brains via substance abuse, as well as in terms of “destroying Russian armies in words”.
Everybody laughed, but only at the words of the little fool Saakashvili.
Because as a result of Georgian aggression (which, by the way, had the code name “Clear Field”, which openly hints at the intention to carry out the genocide of Ossetians and Abkhazians), which started at 00:15 Moscow time on August 8th with the “Grad” shelling of Tskhinvali, 15 Russian peacekeepers died (and about 40 were wounded), and about 1600 peaceful citizens of South Ossetia were killed (and almost as much wounded). The “Human Rights Watch” human rights organisation confirmed the fact of the destruction of the Russian peacekeeping posts in Tskhinvali and Khetagurovo.
At 00:30 Moscow time the commander of the operations of the armed forces of Georgia General Mamuka Kurashvili announced on the air of the “Rustavi-2” TV channel that, in connection with the refusal of the Ossetian side to hold talks on the stabilisation of the situation in the conflict zone, the Georgian side “made the decision to restore constitutional order in the conflict zone”, which completely disproves the latest Georgian insinuations – that Ossetians and/or Russians attacked first.
At 10:00 on August 8th the Georgian state Minister for Reintegration Temur Yakobashvili called on Russia to “act as a real peacekeeper” and stated that “Georgia controls almost all the settlements of South Ossetia, except Tskhinvali and Dzhava”.
On the morning of August 8th Russian aircraft started bombing military facilities on the territory of Georgia: the military base in Gori; the airfields of Vaziani and Marneuli, where Su-25 and L-39 planes, as well as a radar station 40 kilometers from Tbilisi were based.
At 14:30 Moscow time, the first unit of the Russian army – the 1st battalion of the 135th regiment – passed through the Roki tunnel.
At about 17:00 the Foreign Minister of Georgia Eka Tkeshelashvili called on foreign countries to put pressure on the Russian government in order to stop “direct military aggression” on the territory of Georgia. The Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in reply reminded that on the morning of August 8th Georgia called on Russia to act as a peacekeeper. “So that’s what we are doing,” said Lavrov.
On the morning of August 9th the 76th Guards Air Assault Division based in Pskov was transferred to the area of military operations. Russian ships entered the territorial waters of Georgia and started fighting the patrol.
On August 10th the ships of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation sank two Georgian combat kayaks.
On August 11th the “proud Georgians” fled.
By the way, even when the Georgian army carried out a cunning strategic manoeuvre under the name “chaotic escape”, the grant-eating Georgian media continued to report that:
  • “as a result of fighting in the Tskhinvali region the Russian 58th army lost 1789 soldiers, 105 tanks, 81 fighting vehicles, 45 armoured troop-carriers, 10 ‘Grad’ units, and 5 ‘Smerch’ units”;
or
  • “in Georgia there are so many corpses of Russian soldiers that they aren’t transported back to Russia” (compare to the fake information about the losses of Russians in Donbass and in Syria – the similarity of propaganda methods is obvious).
In reality everything is on the contrary: it is the Georgian armed forces that didn’t take any action to recover the corpses of their perished soldiers from Tskhinvali region, and some of the perished Georgian military personnel were buried in mass graves without being identified (compare to the cauldrons in Donbass and several thousand anonymous graves of UAF soldiers).
But all of this is just details. The main thing is that on 08.08.08 Russia showed to the whole world (not only Georgia) that:
  • it won’t allow genocide to be carried out on its borders;
  • it won’t allow its soldiers to be killed with impunity any more;
  • it is ready to pursue an independent policy (both internal and external);
  • the Russian army isn’t in ruins at all and not as destroyed as the West thought, but completely on the contrary – it is capable of destroying in literally several days a NATO army armed with American weapons and trained by American military advisers;
  • Russians can’t be pushed around; it is only possible to reach an agreement with Russians.
The first milestone is the Munich speech of Putin.
The second milestone is the defeat of the Georgian army under the howling and hysterics of the West.
The third milestone is the failure of the Bolotnaya Square attempt at a white ribbon coup.
The fourth milestone is the return of Crimea.
The fifth milestone is the uprising in Donbass.
The sixth milestone is the essential strengthening of the presence of the state in the economy of Russia, especially in strategic spheres.
The seventh milestone is the crushing of Anglo-Saxon proxies (ISIS, al-Nusra, and other puppet terrorists) in Syria.
The eighth milestone is transferring the vector of activity further away from its borders – to Africa (in addition to the Central African Republic, at least four other African countries).
The ninth milestone is the dumping of American debt papers (treasuries).
And there are many other smaller and not so noticeable steps, like: the emergence of new types of weapons; accession to various international organisations, contracts and associations (trade and economic, as well as security contours), as well as the involvement in these organisations of new countries; import substitution; the introduction of the “foreign agent” status; the creation of its own payment system; and many other things.
And all of this is on the way to the restoration of the sovereignty and greatness of Russia.
But at first there was Munich and 08.08.08.

          Ronaldo, Michu and Macca: 12 stunning individual displays on Premier League opening weekend      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Micky Quinn – Sheffield Wednesday vs Arsenal (1993/94)"He's fat, he's round, he's worth a million pounds, Micky Quinn, Micky Quinn!"He may have been a little plumper than your average Premier League striker, but Quinn had a habit of scoring valuable goals at Coventry. A return of 17 in his debut season for the Sky Blues secured their top-flight safety in 1992/93, but better was to come.Facing off against League Cup and FA Cup holders Arsenal at a newly-refurbished Highbury, Quinn bagged a hat-trick in a 3-0 win. He remains one of only six players to score a Premier League treble against the Gunners.“I got a call to say that no opposition player had scored a league hat-trick at Highbury for 75 years,” he later reflected. “The amazing thing is nobody did it after that either and I think I must have been one of the only people that was happy when Highbury was taken down.”Mario Stanic – Chelsea vs West Ham (2000/01)Signed from an all-star Parma side in the summer of 2000 alongside Eidur Gudjohnsen and Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink, Stanic hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge with a stunning brace in Chelsea’s 4-2 opening day win over West Ham.His first goal was the undoubted highlight: a sumptuous keepy-uppy-fuelled 35-yard-volley that still ranks among the Premier League’s finest.“It was a goal that only a man with confidence and personality can score in his first match in front of new supporters,” Blues boss Gianluca Vialli beamed. Unfortunately, that was also about as good as it got for the Croatian, who failed to net again that season and didn’t even bag the goal-of-the-season award for his troubles. Bah.Cesc Fabregas – Arsenal vs Everton (2009/10)The Gunners put David Moyes’s Everton to the sword in scintillating style with a 6-1 win at Goodison Park. Cesc Fabregas ran the show, scoring twice and laying on another two assists in a performance that showed exactly why Barcelona were keen to bring him home.The midfielder’s second goal – a scampering run followed by a low, precise drive into the bottom corner beyond Tim Howard – was a particular highlight. Fabregas ended the season with a career-best 15 goals, a place in the PFA Team of the Year, and remained at Arsenal for another campaign before finally leaving for the Camp Nou in summer 2011.Fabrizio Ravanelli – Middlesbrough vs Liverpool (1996/97)The White Featherearned instant hero status at the Riverside with this impressive hat-trick against the Reds. Ravanelli, a shock £7m signing from Champions League winners Juventus, wasted little time making an impact bypegging the Merseysiders back three times and showcasing his signature shirt-over-head celebration.Having bagged his first equaliser with a penalty, Ravanelli’s poacher instincts came to the fore with his other two goals which capped a memorable 3-3 draw.The Italian personified Boro’s swashbuckling style that season; alas for them, one that ultimately saw Bryan Robson’s side sink back to the second tier. Ravanelli – who aggravated team-mates throughout the season and even fought defender Neil Cox during a team photo – left soon after.Mark Robins – Norwich vs Arsenal (1992/93)Arsenal fans have endured some difficult opening days down the years, but this calamitous curtain-raiser from the 1992/93 campaign takes some beating. Leading the Canaries 2-0 thanks to goals from Steve Bould and Kevin Campbell, the Gunners looked in control and out of sight at half-time.However, the second-half introduction of Mark Robins for Chris Sutton soon turned the tide – the former Manchester United man had reduced the arrears within 10 minutes via a diving header. Another two goals followed – one courtesy of a clanger from David Seaman – before Robins took full advantage of a mistake from Tony Adams and sealed an unlikely 4-2 win with an audacious lob.Dion Dublin – Coventry vs Chelsea (1997/98)Chelsea went into the 1997/98 season full of confidence after winning only their second ever FA Cup. But despite dominating for large spells against a Coventry side tipped to struggle, they hadn’t counted on Dion Dublin enjoying arguably his finest afternoon in a Sky Blues shirt.Ruud Gullit’s west Londoners twice took the lead through Frank Sinclair and Tore Andre Flo, but were twice pegged back: Dublin scored a header direct from a long throw and added another at the near post from a corner.With only minutes remaining, a ball into the box found the striker in acres of space and with the goal gaping for his hat-trick. Dublin went on to score 18 league goals – enough for a share of the Golden Boot – but narrowly missed out on Glenn Hoddle’s World Cup squad.NEXT:The 16-year-old who made light work of ArsenalMarlon Harewood – Blackpool vs Wigan (2010/11)A bargain bin free transfer, Harewood arrived at Blackpool in 2010 off the back of a nightmare spell at Aston Villa where he struggled for form and goals. The striker made a dream start to life with the Tangerines, though, scoring twice in a surprise 4-0 win over Wigan at the DW Stadium that had manager Ian Holloway purring.Harewood was a livewire presence throughout, and it was his two goals – a 22-yard-strike, and fine poacher’s finish from a spilled shot – that had Blackpool going in 3-0 up at half-time. Though his scoring touch deserted him for much of the remaining campaign, for one magical afternoon everything went right for him.Reece Oxford – West Ham vs Arsenal (2015/16)Petr Cech endured a nightmare debut at the Emirates Stadium– the former Chelsea man was at fault for both West Ham goals in a surprise 2-0 win for the Irons.However, it was the performance of a 16-year-old Reece Oxford that dominated much of the post-match analysis. A centre-half by trade, Oxford was instead deployed at the base of a central midfield three by boss Slaven Bilic.It proved something of a masterstroke: the youngster effectively nullified the attacking threat of Mesut Ozil and stifled any hopes of an Arsenal comeback. His performance earned comparisons with Rio Ferdinand, but Oxford’s career hasn’t really kicked on since. Cristiano Ronaldo – Manchester United vs Bolton (2003/04)Dubbed “the most exciting debut performance I’ve ever seen” by George Best, Cristiano Ronaldo’s opening day solo show only lasted half an hour – but it was enough to earn him the man-of-the-match award.Brought on for Nicky Butt with Manchester United 1-0 up, Ronaldo gave Nicky Hunt a torrid time, dazzling the Bolton full-back with a mix of speed, skill and step-overs.The £12m signing played his part in two more United goals as his new side ran out 4-0 winners. Nobody really knows much about what happened to him after that.Michu – Swansea vs QPR (2012/13)Michael Laudrup brought the one-season wonder to Swansea from Rayo Vallecano in 2012 for a bargain £2m. The Spaniard justified that fee in his first appearance alone, scoring twice and setting up another for the Swans in an imperious 5-0 away win over a disjointed QPR.“It's not easy to score goals in England, and to get two in 50 minutes was sensational,” Michu hummed. “This is the way I dreamt it would be in this adventure.”It proved to be a dream season for the Spaniard, who bagged 18 Premier League goals and a League Cup winners’ medal. Alas, all dreams must come to an end…Steve McManaman – Liverpool vs Crystal Palace (1994/95)Having taken the reins midway through a disastrous 1993/94 campaign following the sacking of Graeme Souness, Liverpool manager Roy Evans was determined to return the Reds to the top table of English football.A commanding 6-1 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park was the perfect start and served as the perfect showcase of McManaman’s talents. The Liverpool talisman scored twice, including one goal where the winger set off with the ball in his own half before unleashing an unstoppable strike past Nigel Martyn.Liverpool went on to finish fourth, with McManaman at the fulcrum of their attack and instrumental in a 2-1 League Cup final win over Bolton.SEE ALSO Steve McManaman: The Games That Changed My LifeRoy Keane – Manchester United vs Wimbledon (1996/97)A young David Beckham hogged headlines on the opening day of the 1996/97 season, thanks to a goal from inside his own half against Wimbledon.It was a strike that capped a comfortable 3-0 win for the Red Devils, in part thanks to a commanding performance from Roy Keane in the centre of the park. The Irishman was in his element, leaving opposite number Vinnie Jones biting the dust in a performance full of defensive bite and slick passing.He played a part in United’s second goal and was commanding throughout, in what would become the norm for much of the five years that followed.New features you’d love on FourFourTwo.com

Bled Eslovenia Pueblo Bonito

Bled.

          An analyst shared an embarrassing piece of ad-industry gossip about Facebook, and it's another sign the firm is no longer an untouchable rocket ship of growth (FB)      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Mark Zuckerberg

  • The respected media analyst Liberum has circulated a note saying Facebook's UK advertising revenue may have fallen recently for the first time.
  • Liberum said it showed Facebook's woes might be catching up with the company, but it also posited that advertisers could have switched their spending to TV during the World Cup.
  • The gossip comes with caveats, but it's another signal that the social network is not an untouchable rocket ship of growth.

An analyst has taken the unusual step of sharing some advertising-industry gossip about Facebook — and it's probably the kind of thing the company would prefer to keep a lid on.

Respected media watchers over at the British analyst Liberum sent a note to clients claiming that Facebook's UK advertising revenue may have fallen recently for the first time.

One caveat: It's from one media-buying source and relates to one month's worth of data, for June. Facebook declined to comment.

Liberum said it could be a sign that "Facebook's woes are starting to impact advertising revenues." Though it didn't go into any material detail about these woes, it did mention so-called fake news. The analyst could also be referring to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, the new GDPR privacy law, and election meddling.

Another theory Liberum posited is that advertisers diverted spending into TV because of the World Cup. The football tournament is an ad bonanza for commercial channels like ITV — all helped by England's strong performance, as the team was cheered on by giant audiences of up to 27 million viewers.

Liberum's information is not exactly contradicted by Facebook's second-quarter earnings, which helped wipe a record $119 billion off the firm's value in a single day.

The company's $13.23 billion in revenue did not meet Wall Street expectations, while it warned of revenue growth rates falling by "high single digit" percentages in coming quarters. What's more, Facebook's monthly active users declined in Europe for the first time since at least 2009.

Though the latest news is unverified, the mere fact media buyers are even talking about Facebook in these terms is another signal the social network is not an untouchable rocket ship of growth.

Trilogy International Partners (TIP), which owns telecoms assets in New Zealand (2degrees) and Bolivia (Viva) through its Trilogy LLC unit, has reported total revenues of USD198.1 million for the three months ended 30 June 2018, up 2% on an annualised basis. Back in February, we warned about the prospect of Israel selling F-16s to Croatia, a state in which WWII revisionism and Holocaust denial are running rampant, and memories of the Nazi puppet Independent State of Croatia are routinely glorified. In the meantime, that has become a done deal. But there is more. Not only will Israel sell half a billion dollars worth of fighter jets to Croatia, but on August 5, three Israeli F-16s, crewed by Israeli pilots, took part in a parade to celebrate the 23rd anniversary of the “Operation Storm,” in which more than 2,300 Serbs were killed, including more than 1,200 civilians, among which more than 500 women and 12 children, and which forced the exodus of a quarter million Serbs from their ancestral homes in this former Yugoslav republic, reducing their numbers from the pre-war 600,000 to fewer than 190,000 today.

As the Serb civilians retreated, Croatian fighter planes bombed and strafed the refugee columns, killing many, even those that had already crossed into neighboring Bosnia-Herzegovina (B-H). Some of the refugees were met by Croatian mobs hurling rocks and concrete at them. Compiling accounts from various, mostly Western news reports, Gregory Elich put together a harrowing account of the Croatian military operation, with full US and NATO support:

          Poetry in translation      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
You can support the export of Finnish poetry and give translators a boost – and most importantly, send a Finnish poem out into the world!

(...)

The Poetry in Translation campaign will commission professional, high-quality translations of Finnish poetry into other languages. But the poems translated as part of the campaign won’t just loiter between the covers of a book. We’re also going to print them on postcards and publish them on the Lyriklines poetry website.

The languages featured in the campaign are English, Spanish, Croatian, Polish, French, German, Danish, Czech and Russian. Works by 15 Finnish poets have been selected: Bo Carpelan, Anja Erämaja, Saima Harmaja, Jukka Itkonen, Sanna Karlström, Susinukke Kosola, Kirsi Kunnas, Arto Melleri, Mirkka Rekola, Henriikka Tavi, Olli-Pekka Tennilä, Tuomas Timonen, Sirkka Turkka, Jukka Viikilä and Sinikka Vuola

Around 50 professional translators have signed up to the project.

          Modric likes Perisic post teasing Inter move      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Luka Modric perhaps suggested he is interested in a move to Inter by liking a social media post from Croatia team-mate Ivan Perisic. Modric has been strongly linked with the Serie A side despite being an integral part of a Real Madrid team that has won four Champions League titles in five years. After starring for finalists Croatia at the World Cup, where Modric was awarded the Golden Ball for the tournament's best player, Inter emerged as serious contenders to sign the 32-year-old. Modric is yet to comment on the speculation, although new Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui is determined to keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu and the player has returned to training. Inter have already signed one Croatia international in this transfer window, bringing in right-back Sime Vrsaljko from Atletico Madrid. Ivan Perisic suggested there was someone missing from a photo with fellow Croatians Marcelo Brozovic and Sime Vrsaljko at Inter... And Luka Modric just so happened to like the post on Instagram!  CC: ivanperisic444 pic.twitter.com/JTnV4vH0lK — Omnisport (@OmnisportNews) August 10, 2018 Perisic welcomed Vrsaljko to Inter in a social media post on Friday, tagging in another international colleague, Marcelo Brozovic, and using the hashtag #WhoIsMissing? Modric was cheekily tagged in the post by Perisic and the Madrid midfielder has even liked the post. Madrid have already lost one of their star players heading into the 2018-19 season, five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo leaving for Juventus in a deal worth €112million.
