Live & Undercover: ‘BlacKkKlansman’      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Ron Stallworth lived it, wrote about it and now Spike Lee has filmed it. BLACKkKLANSMAN is Stallworth’s true story of how as a Colorado Springs African-American undercover cop he infiltrated the local Ku Klux Klan chapter in 1979 so successfully they voted him president.  In person during a nearly half-hour interview at the Essex House Stallworth, who was in law enforcement for nearly 40 years until he retired in 2006, emerges as an ideal interviewee. He answers questions as if he’s on the witness stand, answering in complete, direct sentences in a clear measured cadence.  It reminded me of the old Fifties documentary-like TV series DRAGNET where the star-producer Jack Webb’s Joe Friday always said, ‘Just the facts, ma’am.’

Stallworth, 65, was born in Chicago, raised in El Paso, TX and was the first African-American in the Colorado Springs Police Dept. in 1969 as a Police Cadet. In 1979 a local paper’s Want Ad from soldier at Fort Carson announced he was founding a new KKK chapter. Stallworth picked up the phone, called the soldier, impersonating a white recruit.  Thus began the undercover sting operation.  Eventually he talked to the head of the KKK, the Grand Dragon himself David Duke, complaining that he was still waiting to get his membership card. Duke personally signed and mailed it, where it was framed and hung in the police station. The case was kept secret until Stallworth published his memoir in 2014. A revised version with 8 pages of photographs was published in July by Flatiron Books with a movie tie-in cover. The book is subtitled: RACE, HATRED AND THE UNDERCOVER INVESTIGATION OF A LIFETIME.  The interview has been slightly condensed and edited.

Q:  If you’re here Ron, you are happy with the movie. What did you think the film got right in the best way?

RON STALLWORTH: The movie captured the essence of me at 25, going thru this investigation. The problems I had internally, initially to launch it. The problems of working within the police department when I first got hired.  They took some liberties there. I was 19 when I got hired and I wasn’t a police officer, I was a police cadet working in the civilian support capacity. They made it a composite for the purposes of the movie, but they captured what was going on in that environment with officers coming to the Records Bureau and asking for a record on a ‘toad.’ Which was a code word for blacks back then.  It captured things like that very well.  The encounters I had with the Klan members, the phone conversations – it captured that very well to the degree that it was touched upon.  All in all Spike did a masterful job putting his piece together.  What I REALLY liked was the fact that he connects the historical thread between the Confederacy, David Duke the Klan leader I was dealing with, the Charlottesville incident and Donald Trump. Masterful connecting that thread – and I applaud him for it.

Q: Ron has a great line in the movie about David Duke –

RS: ‘Do you really think there could be somebody like that in the White House?’ That was never said by me. But that was a subtle reference to what we have today.

Q: I talked to Washington yesterday and he said there could be a whole other movie about your issues getting into the Colorado Springs police force. In the movie all we see is Frederick Weller’s smarmy racist cop.

RS:  Weller played that character to the extreme – I never encountered anything like that.  It was very subtle. When I got hired at the age of 19 there were no blacks in the department. Period. For about four months I was the only black in the department. So things that were said or done were done very subtlely done. The most overt act, if you will, was the use of the word ‘toad’ when they would come to me in the Record Bureau and ask me to run a record on a ‘toad.’ My form of rebellion was when John David says, ‘There are no toads here.’  Once I figured out – because it took me a while to figure it out – to notice that every time I was checking up on a ‘toad’ the ‘toad’ was black.  That’s when I realized toad was a code word they used for black names.  When I figured it out, I stopped responding to it. If they came in I would ignore the request.  If they said, ‘Speak a little louder,’ I’d ignore it. Finally they’d say, ‘CADET, I’M TALKING TO YOU. GIVE ME A RECORD ON’ – whatever the person’s name is. They’d tell me the date of birth and ethnicity and at that time I’d respond.  If they ordered me, I’d say, ‘I can’t do this. We don’t have any toads here. We have people. If you give me the name of the person that you’re looking for, I can look it up.’  That was my form of rebellion.

Q: What was the reason this was kept secret for 35 years – until you published your memoir?

RS: The investigation? There was no reason.  Other than I didn’t feel like writing the story.

Q: But there was never anything in the paper?  It basically was that the Klansman that were in the military were sent elsewhere?

RS:  Two who were at NORAD [their fingers were on nuclear triggers] were transferred out. But there was no publicity because I was ordered to destroy the files when the Klan decided they wanted Ron Stallworth to be the local chapter leader. The chief basically said, ‘Shut the investigation down now. We’ve gone far enough.’ I argued against it; he was adamant. ‘Shut it down.’ Then he told me to destroy all the files that had been generated. He said, ‘I don’t want it to leak out that we had cops in the Klan. Destroy the files. Don’t talk to anybody about it.’

Q: And you kept the files?

RS:  First opportunity after being told that, I walked out of the office with two notebooks about three inches thick with reports. That’s why I have my KKK certificate [he takes out his wallet and shows me his Klan membership card].

Q: For 1979.  When you retired in Utah from Public Safety chief, that’s when you wrote your memoir?

RS: I retired in 2006. I didn’t start writing until 2013. Why? I talked about writing the story for years but I never had the gumption until 2013. ‘Now’s the time.’

Q:  When Spike took on the movie – I know John David said Spike did not want him to meet you until they began filming – did Spike not want to see you as well?

RS: I didn’t meet Spike until they brought me to Brooklyn last October for the cast reading.  That’s when I met John David, Topher Grace [who plays David Duke], Adam Driver, Laura Harrier. I met them all at that time. John David told me then that he was not going to imitate me. He said, ‘I can’t imitate you, I’m just going to try and channel you. Try to capture the essence of you.’  He captures the 25 year old me very well.

Q: Did you have an Afro like that?

RS: Maybe an inch shorter. Yes, I did have an Afro similar to that.

Q: And did you have a beard?

RS: At various times in my undercover career I had either a full beard, a short-cropped beard, Fu Manchu, a plain simple moustache or just a goatee. We did that – generally we would  have a look that we would maintain for anywhere from 3 to 6 months. Then change our facial features, change our hairstyle, so we would look different and believe it or not it worked. One time I made a drug case against a guy wearing a full beard and 6 months later I trimmed it into a goatee and made another drug bust with the same guy -- and he didn’t recognize me.

Q: We don’t say criminals are the smartest people. The movie has your first undercover assignment covering a Stokely Carmichael rally and Ron gets involved with a woman he meets there.  Was that invented for the movie?

RS:  Yes, because the love interest was part of the script.  It didn’t happen in real life. Stokely Carmichael actually happened.

Q: Were you married during this time?

RS:  No.

Q: You were free and unattached and could risk your life without upsetting anyone except maybe your parents.

RS:  I didn’t care what anybody thought, I was a grown adult. My mother never liked that I worked undercover.  She always worried.  ‘Don’t worry, it’s my job.’ My aunt who helped raise me, her older sister, was concerned. I told her the same. The woman I was dating and later married, she became my first wife – she deceased now. Cancer.  She knew some of the undercover stuff I did, not all  because I didn’t tell her everything. She never worried about it other than to be careful because she knew I was going to do it anyway. It’s something I wanted to do.

Q: Where did this passion to be undercover come from Ron?

RS:  In terms of a police career that’s what I wanted to do. That developed when I was working in the I.D. Bureau – I was 19 at the time – the narcotics officers would come up and ask for records. When I gave them the records, I saw them and the first time this happened I was, WHAT is this long-haired hippie guy coming up to me, asking for a record, for? Who the hell does he think he is! It had to be explained to me: Those are narcs.  They work undercover, that’s why they look the way they do.  They’re cops. Give them anything they need. Don’t recognize them when you see them in public because they may be working a case and your recognition of them could probably jeopardize their lives.  I thought, Damn that’s neat! I’m a 19 year old kid.  I wanted a little bit of that action.  First of all, I don’t like the idea of uniforms. I’ve never been a uniform person.  I wore my uniform with pride and in my opinion I look good in it.  But I never wanted to put the uniform on and make a career as a uniformed cop.  I wanted to be an undercover cop, blending in with the public, looking like a black militant or a long-haired hippie yet having a gun on my hip, a badge in my wallet and able to enforce the law.  To me, that was the neatest thing in the world.  It was also challenging. Police work is very routine.  You get a complaint about a dog barking, you go to the people and tell them to shut their dog’s barking. And you go on to the next thing.  What challenge is there in stuff like that?  I wanted something that would challenge me. And going into a situation and pretending to be something you’re not and your only true weapon is your ability to talk and work your way out of it.  Not only in it, but out of it. Because everybody carries guns and the fact that you carry one is not that important. I liked the challenge of going into those environments and being someone I wasn’t. And being successful and completing it. That’s where I wanted to go from the very beginning.

Q: The movie has Adam Driver’s cop impersonate Ron Stallworth when he meets the Klan face to face.  Two things: Your voice when you were on the phone speaking to Klansmen, did you alter it?

RS: No. I have read where reporters have said, ‘He spoke to the Klan in his white voice.’ When I read those reports it pisses me off.  ‘Cuz there was no attempt to disguise my voice. I talked to these guys on the phone just like I’m talking to you. Because when you’re undercover you try to stay as true to your identity as you are. You know who you are and you know how you normally function. If you try to put on a pretense, such as assuming a fake voice, you have to put on that fake voice ALL OF THE TIME. And you can’t afford to slip out of it. It’s too dangerous. So you talk to them just normally in your regular manner. When I would get on the phone I would simply say, ‘Hi, this is Ron Stallworth. Let me talk to the Grand Wizard’  -- or whatever the case may be. But never, ever did I attempt to disguise my voice.

Q: And the guy who went to the Klan meetings as ‘Ron’ – did he do something to his voice to sound like you?

RS: Same principle. You can’t play with things like that working undercover.  You stay as true to who you are as possible. He did the same thing – and that’s why this investigation was so hilariously funny.  Because it never should have been successful. They should have recognized from the very beginning that the Ron Stallworth on the phone – that voice is totally different from the Ron Stallworth they’re having meetings with.  Chuck, the officer I describe in the book, who played me, Chuck’s voice is very distinctively different than mine.  A deaf person could tell that! These guys didn’t figure it out. Only once was I challenged. I went to a meeting – and this is depicted in the movie.  Chuck went to the meeting that I had set up and then I called, pretending to be the person who had been at that meeting because I wanted to follow up on something.  I called and immediately Ken O’Dell, the local organizer, he said, ‘What’s wrong with your voice?’  So I said [Stallworth coughs twice, assumes a lighter husky voice], ‘I have a sinus infection.’  He said, ‘I get those all the time. Here’s what you need to do.’ He prescribed a remedy for me.

Q: And that’s as far as it ever went?

RS: That’s as far as it ever went in terms of challenging my voice.

Q: What about your life since you’ve published this book?  You’ve been anonymous your whole life and now you’re 65 years old – congratulations! – and you’re a celebrity.  The original book has been out, what, 4 or 5 years?

RS: The original book was published in 2014. The revised, edited edition came out June 5th by Flatiron Books. I don’t consider myself a celebrity. I’m still the same kid from El Paso, Texas, that I’ve always been. I’ve been blessed with some good fortune as a result of writing this book.  I understand my reality has changed a little bit. I have relatives and friends coming out of the woodwork that I’ve never HEARD OF before!  I have people who think I’m a millionaire – and I’m far from that.  I’m not even remotely close to that.   But they think I’m a millionaire now because I have a book out and a movie’s been made and the money’s just rolling into me. When I tell them that that’s not true, they don’t believe me.  I have people calling me up, messaging me, just to say ‘Thank you for what you did. We appreciate the service you did.’ That I find fascinating, that people would take the time to do that. I got one of those messages last night.  So my reality has changed but I don’t see myself as a celebrity.  I ‘met’ John David on the phone – he called me up to talk to me a few weeks before I flew to Brooklyn for the cast reading.  He called me up to talk to me and I still have his message on my phone because he essentially said, ‘I’m a little intimidated Mr. Stallworth. I’m going to play you and I want to capture your story, your “essence.”’ He said, ‘Wow! I am so intimidated, this is real scary.’ When we met he said, ‘Sir, it’s such an honor to meet you,’ and I said, ‘No, the honor is mine. You’re the celebrity. I should be intimidated to talk to you.’

Q:  Has anybody threatened you? Has anybody said, ‘I’m from the Klan. You’re a dirty dog and humiliated us and we’re going to get even’?

RS:  Not yet! I fully expect at some point in time will come across. But that’s par for the course. You deal with that as an undercover cop. I’ve been threatened before. When I was working narcotics I got threatened on several occasions.  Once in a courtroom testifying at a trial.  I’m accustomed to have people make threats against me. I fully expect at some point in time one of these white supremacists will say something. They can say anything they want just don’t try to mess with my wife.

Q: So you’ve remarried.

RS:  I have. Been married a little over a year now.

Q: Is that the first time since your wife died?

RS:  Yes, it’s my second marriage.

Q:  And children?

RS: I have two sons by my first wife, 32 and 28.  They’ve known about my work all along. They knew about this story 8 years ago. They’re very excited about the movie coming out and I said, ‘Recognize that it’s your name coming out of the screen. Run with it! Have fun with it. Tell your friends that’s your dad and if it helps your status with your friends, enjoy it.’

Q: Are either of them in law enforcement?

RS: No.

Aussie Aboriginal Series: MYSTERY ROAD

Anyone who was first introduced to Judy Davis in her mesmerizing, galvanizing film debut, the 1979 Australian hit MY BRILLIANT CAREER, should not miss the Aboriginal Aussie series MYSTERY ROAD.  This is a chance to see one of the globe’s greatest English-speaking actors in a truly unexpected role.   Davis was last seen as viperous gossip monarch Hedda Hopper, needling Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in Ryan Murphy’s FEUD. In MYSTERY ROAD, which premieres on AcornTV Monday August 20 with its six episodes, Davis is local cop Emma James in dusty one-horse town Patterson where there are many sheep and cattle and little else. This contemporary drama with its Western setting is hardly where anyone might expect to find Davis who nevertheless gives Emma a solidity, common sense and irritability without a trace of campy theatrics. Emma we discover is to the manor born; her equally wealthy brother runs an enormous sheep and cattle station.  When two local boys go missing, the search that is the series’ motor begins. One is a local hero who has disappeared, an aboriginal soccer star. The other, a white drifter recently arrived from who knows where, might have been his mate or his lover. Or drug dealers. Emma is forced to partner with detective Jay Swan (Aaron Pederson) on a twisty road of discovery, which too often is set in the local bar with ever present mugs of beer.  Swan, a solid, almost monumental aboriginal presence, defines ‘speak softly, carry a big stick.’ His ex-wife shows up, looking for their daughter -- who isn’t missing for long but sees MYSTERY ROAD become a domestic drama with gender a telling factor in what has and what will happen to the many characters including a just paroled pedophile rapist. Meanwhile Davis struts, rolls her eyes and commands everyone’s attention with her insistence on pursuing the truth, wherever it may lead.  The scenery, picturesque but so dry you’ll want to grab one of those mugs, looms mightily as its own character.

NEW DVDs:

Action and attitude are the hallmarks of STRIKE BACK SEASON FIVE (Blu-ray + Digital, Home Box Office, Unrated). Yes, SEASON FIVE boasts a new troupe of terrorist-busting  commandos engaged in derring do in North Korea. The Cinemax series works as an update on weekly serials with its continuing storyline that usually ends each episode with a cliffhanger.  STRIKE BACK’s rightly won fans who find its mix of bravery, courage, camaraderie and patriotism irresistible.  Here is CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, CRAZY RICH ASIANS’ legendary Michelle Yeoh, England’s Robson Green (GRANTCHESTER) and the two stars bearded Sullivan Stapleton and square jawed Philip Winchester.

Inspired by the death of a classmate, an Iowa high school’s girls volleyball team captain, THE MIRACLE SEASON (DVD, 20th Century Fox Entertainment, PG) handles tragedy, trauma and regeneration sensitively.  As Iowa City West High returns for a new year, having won the state women’s volleyball championship the previous year, they are devastated when their best and most loved player Caroline ‘Line’ Found (Danika Yarosh) dies in a road accident.  From the title you know going in, that despite a bad start the kids will rally for Line and follow their motto inspired by Caroline’s optimistic, outgoing attitude: ‘Live Like Line.’ Helen Hunt and William Hurt are on hand to give gravitas amid a cast of unknowns. Hunt, who looks wonderful simply because she looks perfectly normal (no weird cosmetic procedures or Botox), is fine as the understanding coach who knows she can’t push her hurting players too much or too soon. Hurt is the anguished father who loses his wife to cancer soon after his daughter’s funeral.  School sports tragedies ironically make for ideal drama – to be so young with so much hope for the future and have it brutally crushed, ended.  And then to rise up as the team channels its sorrow into a positive force and beats the odds to win. A more stirring, similarly themed film is the 2006 WE ARE MARSHALL about the W. Virginia football team wiped out in a 1970 plane crash and subsequent efforts in ’71 to field a team.

William Witney fans rejoice!  Here in an excellent print is Witney’s 1956 A STRANGE ADVENTURE (Blu-ray, Kino Lorber Studio Classics, Unrated). Set in a snowy hideaway where the good guys are held hostage by ruthless gangsters ADVENTURE is a mix of hotrod teen drama, classic film noir and old fashioned melodrama.  The Republic Pictures production boasts a transparent femme fatale in Liz Taylor lookalike Marla English, first-rate sociopathic villainy from typecast Jan Merlin and Nick Adams, who was in the previous year’s REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE with his good buddy James Dean. Here he’s an asthmatic crook.  Toby Roan and Jay Dee Witney offer an informative audio commentary.

You won’t get a better look at Sixties’ Swinging London than the satirical SMASHING TIME (Blu-ray, Kino Lorber Studio Classics, Unrated).  This 1967 romp teamed two Bright British Lights – Lynn Redgrave, from the acting dynasty who had won fame as GEORGY GIRL (’66), and Rita Tushingham, the sparrow-like Liverpudlian star of the seminal British working class, kitchen sink dramatic trio, A TASTE OF HONEY, THE LEATHER BOYS and GIRL WITH GREEN EYES.  Thanks to film historian Kat Elinger’s brightly informed audio commentary, SMASHING TIME’s connection to what came before and its suggestion of where Britain was headed becomes clear.  A flop when first released, it’s wonderful mix of slapstick – just seeing the two stars side by side with Redgrave towering a head taller than Tushingham is a visual gag – satire and wish fulfillment plotting as the two lower class mates become celebrated and famous.  On hand, Michael York (Bob Fosse’s Oscar-winning CABARET was in his future).

Tim Robbins devoted himself to live, no-budget, avant garde theater as soon as he graduated from UCLA and CRADLE WILL ROCK (Blu-ray, Kino Lorber Studio Classics, R), a 1999 film revolving around a landmark 1930s agitprop play, reflects that.  As director-actor Robbins is best known for acting in THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, BULL DURHAM and MYSTIC RIVER and writing and directing the anti-capital punishment drama DEAD MAN WALKING that won his longtime companion Susan Sarandon her Best Actress Academy Award. CRADLE, blessed with Robbins’ audio commentary, is set in New York during the Depression and highlights Orson Welles’ efforts to present his legendary stage production THE CRADLE WILL ROCK uncensored.  Here too is Nelson Rockefeller commissioning Mexico’s proudly anti-capitalist Communist artist Diego Rivera to create Rockefeller Center lobby murals (they’re still there!) which he … censored!  The extraordinary cast includes Bill Murray, Vanessa Redgrave, Sarandon, Hank Azaria, John Cusack, Jack Black, Paul Giamatti and Ruben Blades.

Spike Lee's new movie, BlackkKlansman , is based on a true story, but the plot sounds crazy enough that you'd be excused for thinking he'd just made it up. It's about an African-American police officer, Ron Stallworth, who went undercover in the 1970s to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan ... by joining it. Stallworth was the first black officer hired by the Colorado Springs Police Department. In the film, when his chief and the mayor tell him they're hoping he'll "open things up," they don't anticipate that he'll go about that task in quite the way he chooses to do so. Looking through a newspaper at his desk one morning, Stallworth (John David Washington, sporting an impressive Afro the real Stallworth didn't have at the time) sees a Ku Klux Klan recruitment ad with a phone number. He calls it, and finds himself talking with David Duke — yes, that David Duke — the Klan's chatty, gregarious Grand Wizard, as played by Topher Grace. When asked why he's calling, Stallworth launches into a racist

Our interest was peaked at the title. Spike Lee’s new film, BlacKkKlansman, will premiere this summer.  Timed to the anniversary of the Charlottesville protests, the film is based on a true story. (Spoiler warning: Go see Spike Lee's "BlacKkKlansman" before you read this. It's great.) The notion of a black man joining the Ku Klux Klan seems so absurd that Dave Chappelle's skit about a blind, African-American who dons KKK robs is one of the absurdist highlights of "Chappelle's Show." But Colorado Springs Police Det. Ron Stallworth infiltrated the Klan in almost exactly the way portrayed in Spike Lee's totally engrossing new film, "BlacKkKlansman." The film's marketers want to make sure no one mistakes Lee's drama for a satire. Posters for the film spell out . . .

Spike Lee's new movie, BlackkKlansman, is based on a true story, but the plot sounds crazy enough that you'd be excused for thinking he'd just made it up.

When asked why he's calling, Stallworth launches into a racist riff: "I hate blacks. I hate Jews, Mexicans and Irish."

Every head in the precinct has now turned to watch him.

"...and anyone else really who doesn't have pure white Aryan blood running through their veins."

This earns him an "I'm happy to be talking to a true white American" from Duke and, before he hangs up, an invitation to the next meeting of the Klan's Colorado Springs chapter.

As Ron hangs up, and the camera lingers on the astonished faces of the white policemen sitting around him, the director gets the laugh he's looking for. Not the first, and certainly not the last, since Stallworth now has an obvious problem. He needs a white police officer to play him.

"With the right white man," he says, "you can do anything."

The right white man turns out to be Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), who attends the Klan meeting, tries to get the lay of the land, and attracts a little too much attention in the process.

"You ask too many questions" says a beady-eyed white supremacist. "You undercover or something?"

Now, obviously, this is not a terribly comic question. There's serious tension in BlackkKlansman's situation, and the film embraces the shifts in mood with shifts in filmmaking style that allow Lee to couch his arguments in a kind of shorthand history of Hollywood's treatment of race. He includes scenes from Gone with the Wind and Birth of a Nation, has characters discuss '70s blaxploitation films, and gives his hero a bit of Shaft's swagger.

And in grander scenes — an early-in-the-film Stokely Carmichael "Power to the people" speech to which Stallworth is sent undercover, say — the director shifts gears entirely, to deliver a cathartic broadside about Black Power.

A gentler sort of power is also evoked in this very speech, when the civil rights activist talks of having been taught to internalize white standards of beauty, and the screen fills with Lee's quietly devastating response: closeups of the young black faces looking up at him, halos of soft light caressing cheekbones.

Identity is central to BlackkKlansman, and not just black identity. Flip Zimmerman, Ron's partner in the police ruse, initially thinks his own (Jewish) identity isn't a factor — "for you it's a crusade, for me it's a job" he tells Ron. But when that aforementioned beady-eyed white supremacist demands Flip take a "Jew lie-detector test," he finally realizes he's got skin in the game.

Lee's point, of course, is that we've all got skin in this game. He may depict '70s Klan members as bozos with hood-fetishes — hateful, yes, but amusingly incompetent. He does that, though, to soften us up for some harrowing juxtapositions, chief among them Stallworth's Klan-induction, inter-cut with an excruciating recounting of a 1930s Klan lynching to a rapt group of young people by an elderly survivor played by singer/activist Harry Belafonte.

Lee uses that look-back to set up a head-spinning flash-forward to the Trump era that makes clear there's a reason BLlackkKlansman is opening this weekend, one year, nearly to the day, after the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville. If hate groups were insidious four decades ago, argues Lee in his most ferociously entertaining (and just plain ferocious) film in years, how much more dangerous are they today?

‘BlacKkKlansman’ is Spike Lee’s best, and most necessary, movie in years      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Among Spike Lee’s prodigious filmmaking talents, opening sequences are perhaps his most distinctive. He creates ambitious, operatic overtures for his films, mini-movies that introduce viewers to the stories and themes they’re about to encounter, as well as plunge them into the precise kind of dream-state necessary to best appreciate what’s to come.

The introductory sequence to “BlacKkKlansman” is just as audacious, breathtaking and useful as Lee’s fans have come to expect. The film’s first image is the magnificent crane shot from “Gone With the Wind,” wherein Scarlett O’Hara desperately makes her way through hundreds of wounded and dying Confederate soldiers, and the camera pulls up and back to reveal the massive extent of the carnage visited upon white Southerners during the Civil War. It’s a bravura moment, one of the most iconic in the cinematic canon, and Lee proceeds to give it a swift revisionist kick, using it to launch a lacerating tutorial in the history of American racism, white identity politics, paranoia and terrorism that begins as a study in artifacts from the past – including a slicked-back, bespectacled Alec Baldwin delivering a speech about miscegenation and the dangers of a mongrel nation – but that ends sounding utterly of-the-moment.

The core narrative of “BlacKkKlansman” is about Ron Stallworth, who in the early 1970s became the first African American detective in the Colorado Springs police department, and through a series of bizarre accidents and mistaken identities managed to infiltrate the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. We meet Stallworth (John David Washington) as he’s being interviewed to be the “Jackie Robinson” of the local force. Lee styles and frames Washington like a Blaxploitation hero, his Afro perfectly picked out, his sense of cool unruffled and impenetrable within the soft visual haze of the era. Accompanied by an expressively lush jazz-blues score by Lee’s regular composer Terence Blanchard, “BlacKkKlansman” announces from the jump that viewers are in for a lush, sensory treat as Lee plays with the film vernacular he’s manipulated so adroitly and expressively for three decades.

Narratively, the film is more uneven. While going undercover to a Stokely Carmichael rally – where he finds himself getting caught up in the Black Panther leader’s revolutionary call to arms – Stallworth meets an attractive college student (Laura Harrier), with whom he will debate the relative efficacy of radical and reformist politics. Later, when he sees a recruitment ad for the local KKK, he impulsively calls, forgetting to use an assumed name. With that, an alternately tense and amusing game of cat-and-mouse ensues, with Stallworth engaging the Klan leader in revealing and perhaps incriminating phone conversations, and sending his colleague Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver) out to play him in real life, despite their sounding nothing like one another.

Lee structures “BlacKkKlansman” like a crackerjack procedural, punctuated by jaunty humor and “Mod Squad” team dynamics. The tonal balance is tricky, and it isn’t helped by the filmmaker’s penchant for making his most trenchant arguments with blunt, billboard-like speeches and on-the-nose comparisons to the toxic environment of today. One of “BlacKkKlansman’s” most moving moments is a tableau of black faces as they listen to Carmichael – by then going by the norm de guerre Kwame Ture – deplore unarmed civilians being “shot down in the street by white racist cops.” Other past-present echoes aren’t nearly as graceful. When Stallworth strikes up a phone friendship with David Duke (a blandly menacing Topher Grace), the dialogue is so forced that the only thing missing is a MAGA hat. As the plot that Stallworth and Zimmerman discover thickens, its mechanics become unwieldy and progressively less credible, culminating in a scene that should be a nail-biter but feels machined by a piece of script-writing software.

Even at its clunkiest, though, “BlacKkKlansman” is wildly entertaining and wisely prescient, connecting the dots between Duke’s goal of taking racism mainstream with the modern rhetoric around affirmative action and immigration, and dramatizing a combination of guns, alcohol, sexual insecurity and racial impunity that would be ridiculous if it weren’t so deadly. (What makes the Colorado Springs Klan so dangerous is its proximity to, and shared membership with, Fort Carson and NORAD headquarters just down the road).

As he does in the beginning, Lee wraps up the film with a masterful, deeply affecting set piece, in which Harry Belafonte makes a powerful cameo as a civil rights veteran, his reminiscences juxtaposed with a Klan screening of “The Birth of a Nation” and shots from the white supremacists rally in Charlottesville almost exactly one year ago. That footage includes shocking images of anti-racism activist Heather Heyer being mowed down and killed.

It’s a grievous, galvanizing and gracefully executed coda that could only be conceived by one of our most forceful polemicists and poets. “BlacKkKlansman” winds up being Lee’s best and most necessary movie in years, confronting his audience with facts no less urgent for being painful to see clearly, much less accept: This is our cinema. This is our history. This burning cross is ours to bear. This is America.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – “Leave it to Beaver” isn’t just the name of a TV show anymore. Of the 507 entries in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame’s “Name the Colt” contest, Leave it to Beaver was the winning name. “That’s a great name, I think it’s perfect for a big stud that’s hopefully going to do great things,” said Kirsten Vold, who runs Harry Vold Rodeo Company, which owns the horse. Naming the colt was a two-fold process. First, guests to the Hall of Fame suggested names before PRCA staff voted to narrow it to four choices. Then, on the first weekend of August, the 2018 class of inductees into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame voted for their favorite of the four names. The name was submitted by John Nagel, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and he was the only one to suggest Leave it to Beaver. Some suggested names were submitted by more than one person. Nagel’s prize was $200 worth of PRCA and ProRodeo Hall of Fame gift cards and merchandise. The colt was born May 15 to Beaver Tail. Painted Valley, the 2010 PRCA Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year, was the sire. Beaver Tail has been bucked... Continue Reading

In Spike Lee’s ‘BlacKkKlansman,’ undercover black cop gains entry into KKK group       Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

It’s been a long time since one of Spike Lee’s feature films seemed torn from the headlines. But “BlacKkKlansman actually ends with footage from the 2017 demonstration in Charlottesville, Va., that prompted President Trump to declare that there were “fine people on both sides” of that clash between white supremacists and neo-Nazis on one side and anti-racist demonstrators on the other.

“BlacKkKlansman,” which was produced by Jordan Peele and Jason Blum of “Get Out,” is a real-life horror film — with a “Get Out”-like racial angle — and amazing true crime story from the artist who brought us “Do the Right Thing” (1989), “Malcolm X,” “4 Little Girls” and “Inside Man.”

Based on the 2014 book “Black Klansman” by former Colorado Springs police officer Ron Stallworth, the film tells the story of a 1979 undercover investigation into the Colorado Springs branch of the Ku Klux Klan by African-American rookie cop Stallworth (John David Washington of TV’s “Ballers,” the son of frequent Lee collaborator Denzel Washington) and his white partner Philip “Flip” Zimmerman (Adam Driver). Before taking on the Klan, Ron, who sports a large “ ’fro,” is sent undercover to an event featuring Black Power firebrand and Panther Prime Minister Stokely Carmichael (Corey Hawkins), who talks about African-Americans being shot down in the streets by racist cops.

This is where Ron meets the beautiful student activist Patrice Dumas (Laura Harrier) and begins an undercover relationship with her. Noticing an ad in a local paper for Klan membership, Ron calls, using a “white voice” (a subject also raised in “Sorry to Bother You”), and rails in graphic, racist language about African-Americans and Jews and gets an offer to meet the group.

To meet face-to-face with the “Invisible Empire,” the police chief (Robert John Burke) sends Ron’s partner Flip, a strapping, dryly funny young man, who just happens to be a Star of David-wearing Jew. Ron eventually even gets to talk on the phone to KKK Grand Wizard and aspiring politician David Duke (Topher Grace, TV’s “That ’70s Show”).

“BlacKkKlansman” is a real-life “Mod Squad” and a deliberate evocation of the “blaxploitation” films of the “grindhouse” era, complete with a tasty soundtrack featuring regular Terence Blanchard and classics such as “Oh Happy Day” and “Say It Loud — I’m Black and I’m Proud (Parts 1 & 2).”

Like most Lee “joints,” “BlacKkKlansman” uses dark humor to expose just how rooted racism remains in the United States of America. We’re not quite back to when photos of lynchings were sold as postcards, but close. With his natural charisma and effortless charm, Washington is a natural. Driver once again makes an Everyman character goofy and yet heroic. You will feel just how close Flip comes to getting caught in his deceit by these killers.

Also in the fine cast of “BlacKkKlansman” are Alec Baldwin, Michael Buscemi, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Nicholas Turturro and civil rights icon Harry Belafonte. Right on.

(“BlacKkKlansman” contains profanity, racial epithets, violence and sexual references.)

Pence outlines U.S. Space Force plan for 'next battlefield'      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
WASHINGTON – Pointing to growing threats and competition from Russia and China, the White House on Thursday announced ambitious plans to create the U.S. Space Force as a sixth, separate military warfighting service by 2020.

The proposal taps into the American public’s long fascination with space – but with a military focus. The plan faces daunting hurdles and requires congressional approval. Military leaders and experts have questioned the wisdom of launching an expensive, bureaucratic new service branch.

Vice President Mike Pence announced the new force during a Pentagon speech, fleshing out an idea that President Donald Trump has extolled in recent months as he vowed to ensure American dominance in space. Pence described space as a domain that was once peaceful and uncontested but has now become crowded and adversarial.

“Now the time has come to write the next great chapter in the history of our armed forces, to prepare for the next battlefield where America’s best and bravest will be called to deter and defeat a new generation of threats to our people, to our nation,” Pence said.

Trump marked Pence’s announcement with a tweet: “Space Force all the way!”

Pence portrayed the change as a response to foes’ potential aggression rather than any offensive U.S. military effort.

Citing Russia and China, he said that for years U.S. adversaries have “pursued weapons to jam, blind and disable our navigation and communication satellites via electronic attacks from the ground.”

“As their actions make clear, our adversaries have transformed space into a warfighting domain already, and the United States will not shrink from this challenge,” he said.

In June, the president directed the Pentagon to create a “separate but equal” space force, a complicated and expensive move that could take years to gain Congress’ approval and become operational. On Thursday, Pence said the administration will work with Congress on the plan and will outline a budget next year. The last time the U.S. created a new uniformed military service was in 1947, when the Air Force was launched after World War II. It joined the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has endorsed steps to reorganize the military’s space-warfighting forces and create a new command, but he previously opposed launching an expensive new service. A new branch of the military would require layers of bureaucracy, military and civilian leaders, uniforms, equipment and an expansive support structure.

Asked about the cost, Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan told reporters the Pentagon doesn’t have a number yet but will when the legislative proposal is finished by the end of the year.

“I would assume it’s billions,” he said. Shanahan said Mattis’ opposition to a separate service last year was rooted in concerns about spending more on overhead while under strict budget caps – implying that those worries may not be as great now.

Deborah James, who served as Air Force secretary for the final three years of the Obama administration, estimated it would be five to 10 years before a separate service would be fully formed.

“Eventually, it’ll settle out, but you will go through years of thrashing. And is that thrashing going to slow your momentum or is it going to help you achieve your goals and address the real challenges that we have on our plate?” she said at Brookings Institution last week. “I don’t think so. I don’t. I wouldn’t vote in favor of it.”

The military’s role in space has been under scrutiny because the U.S. is increasingly reliant on orbiting satellites that are difficult to protect. Satellites provide communications, navigation, intelligence and other services vital to the military and the national economy.

U.S. intelligence agencies reported earlier this year that Russia and China were pursuing “nondestructive and destructive” anti-satellite weapons for use during a future war.

And there are growing worries about cyberattacks that could target satellite technology, potentially leaving troops in combat without electronic communications or navigation abilities.

The Pentagon proposal delivered to Congress on Thursday lays out plans to consolidate U.S. warfighting space forces and make organizational changes to boost the acquisition and development of technologies.

It says the department will establish a Space Command to develop warfighting operations, a Space Development Agency to more quickly identify and develop new technologies, a Space Operations Force of leaders and fighters and a new support structure. In the second phase, the Pentagon would combine all the components into the new sixth branch of service.

In the meantime, the Space Command would be led by a four-star general, and Pence said a new high-level civilian post – assistant defense secretary for space – also would be created.

“We are glad that the Pentagon is finally taking these steps in enhancing our space strength,” Reps. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., and Jim Cooper, D-Tenn., leaders of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, said in a statement. They said the Pentagon report was the start of a “multiyear process that we think will result in a safer, stronger America.”

Much of the military’s current space power is wielded by the Air Force Space Command, which has its headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The command has about 38,000 personnel and operates 185 military satellite systems, including the Global Positioning System and communications and weather satellites. It also oversees Air Force cyberwarfare.

Under the new plan, space elements that are now scattered across the department would be gathered under one command, which Pence said would better ensure integration across the military.

Comment on Google Maps’ Influence on Neighbourhood Names by Tom Harrington      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
I've seen several cases of map or travel sites mysteriously resurrecting old names as well, I suppose because they appear on old maps. Some sites will tell me I live in a neighborhood called Roswell. I've lived here more than 25 years and never heard that anywhere except on map sites. I also see travel sites that still refer to the Colorado Springs airport as "Peterson Field", a name which hasn't been used in decades. Maybe it fits though, because until recently Apple Maps showed a pond in a park near my house, despite the fact that the pond hasn't existed since Kennedy was president.

Pence outlines U.S. Space Force plan for ‘next battlefield’      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

The military’s role in space has been under scrutiny because the United States is increasingly reliant on orbiting satellites that are difficult to protect.

In the meantime, the Space Command would be led by a four-star general, and Pence said a new high-level civilian post – assistant defense secretary for space – would also be created.

“We are glad that the Pentagon is finally taking these steps in enhancing our space strength,” Reps. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., and Jim Cooper, D-Tenn., leaders of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, said in a statement. They said the Pentagon report was the start of a “multi-year process that we think will result in a safer, stronger America.”

BlacKkKlansman Finds a Way to Make Even White Supremacists Entertaining      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Given all the talk of Nazis and fascists and the shouts of “America First,” many Americans have spent the past couple of years experiencing whiplash, wondering how they got dragged back to the 1940s. According to Spike Lee’s new comic drama, BlacKkKlansman, liberals today aren’t alone in their bewilderment and despair. The 1970s, too, saw a backlash to the headway made during the civil rights movement. The fists raised for black power were swiftly followed by hoods donned for white power—as they were then, as they are now. Premiering on the eve of the one-year anniversary of the fatal Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, BlacKkKlansman may well be the first film to frame the Trump era as one of regression in response to the progress of the Obama years.

Based on the memoir Black Klansman by Ron Stallworth, the film is thematically dense and narratively twisty. After becoming Colorado Springs’ first black police officer, the movie version of Ron (played by John David Washington, son of Denzel) lands an undercover assignment to infiltrate the organization the precinct captain believes to be the greatest threat to national security: the Black Panther Party. After Kwame Ture (Straight Outta Compton star Corey Hawkins), born Stokely Carmichael, leaves town after a rousing talk, a slightly more politically attuned Ron stumbles into his next assignment. Spotting a classified ad for the Ku Klux Klan in the newspaper, he calls them up, seemingly on impulse. That call turns out to be as fateful as a call can be. Ron arranges a getting-to-know-you meeting with the Klan, with a white colleague, Flip Zimmerman (a picture-stealing Adam Driver), to appear in his stead, for obvious reasons. A later mix-up resulting in membership delays puts the real Ron in contact with David Duke (a Ned Flanders–channeling Topher Grace, in an inspired casting choice). With motivations that aren’t clear (a frustrating aspect of BlacKkKlansman is Ron’s emotional opacity, with Washington unable to make up for the flaws of the script), the real Ron continues to speak to the local Klansmen over the phone while catfishing the politically aspirant Duke as his ostensibly white friend.

What follows are long stretches of time embedded with the Klan, which feel not unlike being marooned for a couple of hours on 4chan or r/The_Donald. Because a paranoid Klan member named Felix (Jasper Pääkkönen) suspects, correctly, that Flip is Jewish, the undercover detective is forced to outdo the white supremacists’ racism and anti-Semitism. The Holocaust never happened, scoffs Felix. Actually, retorts the fake Ron, it did happen, and it was a “most beautiful” event. As with the famous montage of slurs in Lee’s Do the Right Thing, which the writer-director liked enough to reprise in 25th Hour, it’s unclear whether Lee means these scenes to be shocking or accurate, or if there’s a meaningful difference in this case. The sometimes unnerving suspense over whether the hair-trigger Felix—mollified somewhat by the friendly, relatively normal Klan recruiter (Ryan Eggold) and a mouth-breathing hanger-on (Paul Walter Hauser, reprising his own performance from I, Tonya)—will discover Flip’s true ethnic identity elevates the Klan scenes from sheer races to the bottom. But it’s also worth asking what purpose it serves to portray white supremacist groups as mostly dopey or sociopathic—i.e., as outliers—when Trump enjoys an approval rating of more than 40 percent.

In contrast to recent period pieces like American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson and The Post that reexamined the past through a modern lens, BlacKkKlansman uses history to illustrate how we’re repeating it. Deliberate anachronisms (like a reference to “superpredators” in a 1950s anti-integration video hosted by a Southern eugenicist played by Alec Baldwin) mix with recently recycled slogans (Reagan’s “Let’s make America great again,” Charles Lindbergh’s aforementioned “America first,” which has long been popular among the KKK) to emphasize the cyclicality of the openness of hate. We see other kinds of racial pushback in the characters (not always Klan members) who complain about how Archie Bunker made racism uncool and how many more people of color there are on TV these days—a whine with too many echoes in the present day. Lee’s implicit argument that these reactionary anxieties are nothing new certainly resonates—and is clear long before an epilogue that consists of news footage of the Charlottesville protests, including graphic video of the killing of Heather Heyer.

Amid such ugliness, the movie’s rare moments of respite are desperately welcome, particularly as the Klan prepares its own Charlottesville-esque violence in Colorado Springs. In their sights is the real Ron’s love interest Patrice (Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Laura Harrier, who is 28 but somehow still looks too young for the part), the head of a nearby black student union. Lee demonstrates an off-putting casualness when he cuts straight from a scene of a white cop groping her to a vibrant dance sequence set to Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose’s “Too Late to Turn Back Now,” but the scene at the gilded disco proves infectious anyway. (The score too, by longtime Lee collaborator Terence Blanchard, is typically fantastic.) The longish speeches by Hawkins and Harry Belafonte, playing an elder activist, are moving. But nothing feels quite as fresh as the parody (or is it reality?) of the Klan’s bureaucratic banalities (hoods, one member notes, are not covered by the annual membership fee) and earnest solemnity (Duke whitesplains to Ron the difference between how white people and black people talk). For a deliciously long time, Lee tantalizes us with the inevitable moment when the real Ron will reveal to Duke his actual race. The filmmaker’s studious parallels make BlacKkKlansman’s messages vital. Ron’s pranks make them bearable.

Critics are praising Spike Lee's latest film, "BlacKkKlansman," as the best work in years from the acclaimed filmmaker.

The movie is based on the true story and memoir of Ron Stallworth, the first African-American detective to work in the Colorado Springs police department, who in the late 1970s devised a plan to infiltrate and expose the Klu Klux Klan.

"BlacKkKlansman" was developed and produced by Jordan Peele (the Oscar-winning director of "Get Out"). Peele brought the project to Lee as a working concept in 2017, and critics are calling the resulting work a dynamic mix of crime drama and comedy, as well as a sharp social commentary on both the past and present.

The film, which stars John David Washington and Adam Driver, currently has a 98% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Here's what critics have said about "BlacKkKlansman," which opens nationwide on Friday:

"Spike Lee returns to form with a true-life story that works as comedy, crime drama and political alarm-bell all at once."

Focus Features

Rafer Guzman, Newsday

"Spike Lee's hellraiser about a black cop who infiltrated the KKK in the 1970s is also an incendiary indictment of our current Trump moment and one of the best films of the year. A cinema giant has found his voice again and the power to make it heard."

Focus Features

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"Its fiery message couldn't be more timely - and its rage more justified."

Focus Features

Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly

"[Lee] is firing on all cylinders here. 'BlacKkKlansman' is a true conversation starter, and probably a conversation ender as well."

Focus Features

Odie Henderson, RogerEbert.com

"'BlacKkKlansman' announces from the jump that viewers are in for a lush, sensory treat as Lee plays with the film vernacular he's manipulated so adroitly and expressively for three decades."

Focus Features

Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

"It was history written with lightning. 'BlaKkKlansman' is a deafening roll of the thunder we've been waiting for ever since."

Focus Features

David Erlich, IndieWire

"Lee never takes his eye off the connecting thread between the events of 1978 and the present. The result is one of his most flat-out entertaining films in years, and also one of his most uncompromising."

Focus Features

Emily Yoshida, Vulture

Daily News Links Are Below These Opening Questions And Warnings
How much carbon monoxide are you in when in any motor vehicle?

Did you know that many people do not measure the air they breathe.

After prevention there is no greater awareness than measurement.
Awareness leads to quick thinking. Measurement leads to quick action.

Are you in the know?

Do I know enough about carbon monoxide and carbon monoxide poisoning to justify never knowing how much is in the air I breathe every day, everywhere I go?”

There are some people who want to be notified of the presence of carbon monoxide at levels or concentrations as soon as the gas is present, at concentrations well below those that can instigate poor health symptoms but not be high enough levels to sound the CO alarm they own.

There are some people who do not want to push a button on their CO alarm to see what low, aggravating levels of the poison might be in their home, or anywhere.

The most recommended CO Alarm in U.S. is a high level alarm

Beware of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning During Summer Activities
Public News Service
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Carbon monoxide often is thought of as a winter threat with the use of heaters, but summer recreation activities also can generate the gas that could prove deadly if you're exposed to it in confined spaces. - Every year, the state receives reports of carbon monoxide poisoning from people using campers, boats and other recreational equipment with engines. - "These are places where people tend to be sort of in a small space and they're often using gas stoves, or running machines, or even their car," explains Dr. Tim Jones, state epidemiologist at the Tennessee Department of Health. Call for Action Alert: Check your vents following major hail storm
KKTV 11 News
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) -- If your home was pummeled by hail, you need to take a close look at your roof and check for damage on your mechanical vent. The vents are connected to gas fired appliances, like your furnace or your water heater. - "Our inspectors have been noticing more homes due to the hail, and due to the size of the hail, that their vent caps or their vents themselves are badly damaged, which prevents the gases from properly evacuating the home," said Rebecca Mulder, the Communications Supervisor for the Regional Building Department. That's a big problem because carbon monoxide can get trapped in your home. - "It really becomes a sudden silent killer – carbon monoxide. You don't smell it or know that it's happening, but it can leak into your home," said Mulder. If you are having flu like symptoms, that can be a sign of carbon monoxide poisoning. Call your doctor right away. (More)

What is in the air you are breathing right now?

What will you be doing today; walking into poison?
Who will be responsible for the air you breathe?
You may be the only person who can prevent your own poisoning.
We are all vulnerable to carbon monoxide exposure and poisoning.
Everyone has been poisoned by CO and will be poisoned again. The degree of the poisoning depends upon allowing yourself to be in a situation where someone else controls the air you breathe and the mechanisms for alarming notification.

Please read the alarm information on the package and in the instructions that come with the carbon monoxide alarm. Know that if it is a U.L. 2034 Listed product (or CSA 6.19 Listed), it is a high level alarm that has been tested to alarm no sooner than 70 PPM at the lowest (the alarm must resist for one hour when above this level) and when over 400 PPM before 15 minutes at the highest concentration, after resisting alarming for 4 minutes when over this level.

Know when your fire department and emergency responders begin wearing their breathing apparatus and what their civilian evacuation levels are for carbon monoxide; it may be as soon as the gas is present in your presence. Pregnant women, infants & children, people with heart & respiratory struggles, those suffering depression or chronic headaches and all people of vulnerable health should be alerted as soon as the gas begins to concentrate, around 10 PPM (parts per million) or lower.

You most likely need a low level carbon monoxide detector to sound off when carbon monoxide hazards are just beginning, not after you’ve been exposed to levels that make you have headaches, flu-like symptoms, increased tiredness, heart stresses or worse.

Do not take risks with carbon monoxide. Take responsibility for the air you breathe and the combustion systems you are responsible for. If you don’t do it for yourself, do it for others, unless you think $45.00, high level protection is good enough.

Help prevent injuries and deaths; don’t guess about carbon monoxide. Measure carbon monoxide for safety and knowledge. The more you test the more you learn. GET BUSY

Measurement is continuing education at its best. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety

How bad air quality in plane cockpits could lead to pilots making FATAL mistakes
The Sun
A study by Harvard scientists has shows that the more carbon dioxide pilots breathe in, the more chance they have of making mistakes when flying. - If the air is stale and has higher levels of carbon dioxide, pilots can make it harder to make manoeuvres and handle emergencies like engine failure on take-off, which could be fatal to passengers. - Higher levels of carbon dioxide can be caused by bleed air in the cabin, when engine oil or other harmful chemicals leak into the plane through faults in the plane's engine seals. National Conference of State Legislatures
As of March 2018, a majority of states have enacted statutes regarding carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, and another 11 have promulgated regulations on CO detectors. Alaska requires detectors approved by the state fire marshal be installed in all dwellings. Connecticut requires them in all new construction, as does New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Washington and West Virginia. Florida also requires them in new construction, and in every room with a boiler. Minnesota passed a law requiring detectors in motor boats.

CO Detectors in U.S. Homes
27 states and the District of Columbia require carbon monoxide detectors in private dwellings via state statute: Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia (via adoption of the International Residential Code), Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Certain states limit the installation to buildings with fossil-fuel burning devices, others only require the device be installed upon the sale of the property or unit.

Another 11 states require carbon monoxide detectors in private dwellings regulatorily through the adoption of the International Residential Code or via an amendment to their state’s building code: Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Virginia, and Wyoming.

CO Detectors in U.S. Schools
California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maine and Maryland require carbon monoxide (CO) detectors in school buildings.

CO Detectors in U.S. Hotels and Motels
Fourteen states require the installation of carbon monoxide detectors in hotels and motels under the statute. - Three of those states (New Jersey, Vermont and Wisconsin) have complementary administrative regulations. - Two states (Kansas and Washington) have requirements through administrative regulations alone.

Only Spike Lee could have made BlacKkKlansman      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

There's a lot going on in BlacKkKlansman, the latest film from legendary director Spike Lee. It starts with Dr. Kennebrew Beauregard (Alec Baldwin) filming a white supremacist PSA, sputtering like a rabid dog between takes and spewing racist slander. It ends with scenes from the real-life 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. And in between, it sandwiches a wild true crime story that comes to life as a blaxploitation film.

The movie, which hits theaters Friday, is based on the story of black Colorado Springs detective Ron Stallworth, who in 1978 began an investigation into local Ku Klux Klan activity that ended with the chapter's dismantling. But Lee shapes his adaptation with a certain frenetic energy, eschewing traditional historical tics and instead leapfrogging across genres from comedy to police procedural, historical biopic to historical atrocity. He invokes blaxploitation — a 1970s filmmaking movement centered on black heroes battling emblems of white supremacy in black communities — as a way to underwrite the tension of the subject matter. The effect of his genre-swapping is as dizzying as it is immensely satisfying.

A film as brazenly, bluntly, unapologetically entertaining as BlacKkKlansman could only be made by a filmmaker as brazen, blunt, and unapologetic as Lee, who built a career on making incendiary cultural statements about social transgressions. More to the point, it could only be made by a filmmaker with Lee's experience. The control he exerts over his craft lets him nimbly avoid the monotone of biography. Another director would have taken Stallworth's story and shot it with overwhelming sobriety, fashioning serious subject matter into self-serious cinema, the kind that is lavished with hosannas and nominations during awards season.

Lee goes a different route. He doesn't treat the material like a joke, but he doesn't grandstand, either. We're clued into Lee's more mischievous intentions right at the jump: When we meet Stallworth as he goes for a job interview, he meets with Colorado Springs' chief of police, Bridges (Robert John Burke), and a recruitment agent, Mr. Turrentine (Isiah Whitlock Jr.). Turrentine's entire purpose in the scene, it seems, is to quote the most famous catchphrase of Whitlock's career. (Yes, it's the one from The Wire.) That's a slam-dunk laugh — and proof of Lee's goals for the film.

He keeps the laughter going. Not longer after joining the force, Stallworth, having worked his way out of the evidence room and into intelligence, responds to an ad placed in the paper by the Klan calling for members, dialing the number provided and asserting to the voice on the other line his distinct hatred for all minorities, from Jews to Italians to the Irish, but particularly black people. The room goes silent. Every officer in the joint stares in stunned disbelief at what they're hearing.

It's a bit of racial comedy that would tickle Mel Brooks. From the other side of the lens, we sense Lee is having as good a time as we are.

But BlacKkKlansman doesn't remain in that comic mode for the entirety of its two-hour runtime. There's real history for Lee to cover. At one point, Stallworth goes incognito at a Stokely Carmichael (Corey Hawkins) speech, setting up the scene where Stallworth's identity struggles — the conflict he feels as a black man wearing a badge — firmly take root. He's there to ensure that Carmichael, by this time known as Kwame Ture, doesn't inject his radical ideas into the so-called "good Negroes of Colorado Springs," as Stallworth's peers put it.

But Lee films the scene with reverence, as if he too is in Ture's audience, enraptured by his words. The frame darkens, and we see the black men and women watching Ture on stage, their faces lit gently, their expressions highlighted as they absorb messages of black beauty, black power, black validation. They're powerful words — enough to affect Stallworth, too, pushing him to consider how the color of his skin clashes with his vocation. Attending Ture's speech challenges his blackness and bifurcates him as a human: He's black; he's also a cop.

Characters we meet throughout the movie argue that there's an innate conflict of interest in serving the police as a black American. Stallworth battles with that assertion through most of the movie, fighting for selfhood as determinedly as he fights the Klan. Eventually, he joins the house in cheering Ture and in chanting words of solidarity, but his face half glows in validation and half wrinkles in uncertainty. In dramatizing the violence of racism, Lee finds room to dramatize Stallworth's individuality, too.

In the uglier moments of the film, when Stallworth and his fellow officers are embedded with the Klan, Lee manages to avoid being bogged down in obvious disgust in favor of making a more sagacious point. As the operation progresses, Jewish detective Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver) is called on to pose as Stallworth for in-person meetings with Klan delegates Walter Breachway (Ryan Eggold); Ivanhoe (Paul Walter Hauser); and, most terrifying of all, Felix Kendrickson (Jasper Pääkkönen), a man whose forehead veins look ready to burst at any second. Lee unsurprisingly paints these men as cretins, and he understands well the impulse to deride men like Walter, Felix, and especially Ivanhoe, the drunken bumbling dimwit of the bunch.

But each joke Lee writes feels like a challenge to his viewers: Laugh if you like. These men are dumber than a bag of hammers, but they'll murder you all the same. He also understands what men like these stood for, and he knows that their ideology and activities make them impossible to laugh at for too long. In that way, Lee smartly acknowledges the Klan's legacy with sober, clear eyes — which stands in stark contrast to the way he reveres black cinema throughout the film, and most of all Stallworth. He envisions Stallworth as the kind of blaxploitation hero Stallworth himself looks up to, whether it's Richard Roundtree, Pam Grier, Jim Brown, or Ron O'Neal. He sees blaxploitation as a weapon to wield against the Klan. BlacKkKlansman puts the element of white supremacy front and center, building to a climax where the Klan is brought to heel and Stallworth walks off into the sunset a hero.

To get there, Lee cuts from comedy to calamity, jumping between black remembrances of the dead and white calls to arms against minorities. Toward the end of the film, Harry Belafonte appears as an older civil rights activist, recalling Jesse Washington's lynching in 1916; Lee flips from Belafonte to Topher Grace, playing erstwhile Klan Grand Wizard David Duke, pontificating to his subjects about the need for "true white men."

The contrast marries two kinds of grim terror: the terror of the victimized, and the terror of the victimizers. It's a juggling act that Lee sustains throughout BlacKkKlansman — and a juxtaposition only he could sustain.

But most of the story in the film is true.

"We must have American dominance in space"      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

I've been working on space warfare issues since 1983.  At that time I lived in Orlando, Florida (one hour from the space center) and it was easy to pay attention when Ronald Reagan announced Star Wars - SDI (Strategic Defense Initiative).  It's never been about defense.

The US space program was essentially created by the former Nazi rocket scientists brought over to the US after Hitler was defeated.  Much of the heavy lifting to defeat Hitler was done by the Soviet Union which lost 27 million people during the Nazi invasion.

Cut away to 1997 and the US Space Command document entitled 'Vision for 2020' maintained that America would 'control space, dominant space, and deny other nations the use of space'.  The US would be the 'Master of Space'.

Space Command headquarters at Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs

The idea that the US must dominate space is arrogant, stupid, dangerous and highly destabilizing to world peace.  Admittedly it is a major opportunity for maximum profits for the aerospace industry and the Trump/Pence 'space force' proposal is largely being driven by that factor.  They've long said at the Pentagon that Star Wars would be the largest industrial project in human history.

So we've now reached this crisis moment where the expansion of warfare into space is being dramatically promoted and there must be an immediate  counter-reaction by the peace loving people around the world.

One opportunity we have is the October 6-13 Keep Space for Peace Week that the Global Network annually organizes as a way to increase education and action around this important issue.  We urge local groups and concerned citizens to help put together protests and educational meetings during that week.  Find our space week poster here.

We have a good selection of space videos and documentary films available on the Global Network web site which can be used during space week.  Find them here.

The aerospace industry is targeting human needs programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid for dramatic cutbacks in order to move those funds into the proposed space force.  We cannot let them get away with that.

Help us say - space force - NO!  Human needs and deal with climate change - YES!

Spike Lee's new film 'BlacKkKlansman' is based on an electrifying true story, and it has a 98% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Rafer Guzman, Newsday

"Spike Lee's hellraiser about a black cop who infiltrated the KKK in the 1970s is also an incendiary indictment of our current Trump moment and one of the best films of the year. A cinema giant has found his voice again and the power to make it heard."

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"Its fiery message couldn't be more timely - and its rage more justified."

Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly
