India's invite to Trump not date specific, say govt sources      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

The invitation to United States President Donald Trump to visit India is not date-specific, said government sources on Thursday.

Earlier it was reported that India extended an invitation to the US President to be the special guest on the Republic Day function next year.

On August 2, US Press Secretary Sarah Sanders in a press briefing in Washington stated that no decision had been taken on the matter yet. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and US Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis, however, would be visiting India next month to start a "dialogue process and a potential discussion for a presidential visit later in the year."

For the Republic Day function, the government invites a 'head of a country' to be the special guest.

Leaders from the 10 ASEAN nations -- Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Brunei - were chief guests at this year's parade function.

Former US President Barack Obama has also been part of the celebrations and visited India in 2015 as the chief guest of the 65th Republic Day event. (ANI)

Britain's chaos creation in Afghanistan has been going on for decades      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
The role of the CIA in the rise of Bin Laden and Al Qaeda in 1980s Afghanistan is well known; what is less understood is the pivotal part played by MI6 and the SAS in this sordid operation. The People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) swept to power in Afghanistan in 1978 on a platform of land rights, workers' rights, and an end to forced marriages. This was effectively a social revolution against the feudal system that had shaped Afghans' lives for centuries, and it naturally angered the country's entrenched landed interests as well as its' religious establishment. Their anger, however, presented an opportunity to an imperial fraternity determined to deliver a blow to the Global South in general, and its Soviet ally in particular. As the armed counter-revolution against Afghanistan's new, socialist government got underway, the US and Britain seized the chance to give the Soviet Union, in the words of US President Carter's National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, "their own Vietnam". The defeat of the US at the hands of Vietnamese peasants was, in fact, the most obvious sign of imperial decline during that tumultuous period. Earlier in the decade, Portuguese efforts to hang on to their colonies in Angola and Mozambique had been smashed by determined independence movements, with communist forces in the leadership, whilst the US' loyal South African ally was facing a resurgence of youth resistance. The Vietnam war had catalysed communist victories in Laos and Cambodia whilst the pro-US Shah was being rocked by determined street protests in Iran. Newly independent countries were overwhelmingly rejecting US overtures to become neo-colonies and were instead forging ahead, through entities such as the Non-Aligned Movement, with plans for a 'New International Economic Order', challenging the West's rigging of world trade. In other words the Global South - increasingly allied to the socialist bloc - was rapidly posing an existential threat to the Western-dominated, white supremacist, capitalist world order.

PUP San Juan CWTS++ : Catalyst of Mapping      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

August 9,2018: We had a regular meeting In our CWTS++ program of MapAmore in Polytechnic University of the Philippines, San Juan branch which was headed by our professor Mr. Erwin Olario. Our mapping program is more than a month now and we discussed the progress we had made in mapping specifically in the numbers of edits is around 6500 which includes 4199 buildings and covered 716 kilometers of roads. We validated almost all the missing roads in the Philippines and a few parts in Malaysia Laos, South Africa ,Russia, Canada and Cambodia. Even though the PUPSJ CWTS++ is just beginning its mapping program shows that its students/volunteers can contribute to the aspect of mapping whether in an emergency or not.

The first topic we had for today was about other Open Street Map Editors which was reported by our classmate Joshua Madridondo. The editors he shared was Potlatch 2, Merkaartor, Vespucci, StreetCompete, OsmAnd, Quantum GIS and ArcGIS. The editors stated has some pros and cons, like for Potlatch 2 it was easy to use which was good for beginners, displays the GPS traces in difference layers but requires a flash plug-in in the browser. While Merkaartor has unique features, intuitive user interface and binaries for Windows and other platforms. But it has a slow development and a small data base.

After that Mr. Olario started to discuss the common issues and techniques about mapping.

•When you are in a task and the area you are mapping is not whole, then logically you would still map the entire area even though its other haft is in another task.

• In making roads you would like to copy the geometry of the road when you are mapping so that it would follow what it looks like, so creating addition nods are necessary. Additional you must connect roads in an entire area rather than creating a single line or incomplete ones. Indicate whether they are intersecting. Do not create another line on top of an existing road unless needed. Connect roads if necessary.

•When putting names on a building you must know the name of that establishment or building. Putting your name on a building is not needed or even someone else unless they are a public figure like a politician.

•Study the satellite image because some images are not what they seem to be.

•If an image is being block by a cloud or it has a bad imagery then find another image of the same place. If possible some images would just need logic in mapping.

•Most buildings are square or rectangle, if you mapping a building with trees around it you would make a square rather than avoiding the tree. Logically, the tree would be taller than the building because it blocks a portion of the roof. Squaring the building corners is a must. You can put a single area on a place if it is too close to each.

•Connect water features like rivers to coast.

•You can split your task if it is too big.

•Use appropriate tags.

We had a group discussion about Laos Flood Mapping when our professor Mr. Olario asked the volunteers who mapped the area to share their experiences. Some say it was quite confusing because some tasks where divided, but either way you have to map the area you had chosen whether it is partial of the whole. Some said they did not know they were already mapping Laos. Some putted the wrong hashtag in the comment, making the non-related Laos edit counted in the said project. There are also positive experiences that they just enjoy mapping.

Then we had an exercise which was called fieldpaper. We were given a paper, this paper was a map of the vicinity of PUP San Juan, streets, routes and areas we normally go by before arriving/leaving school. It was divided into 8 tasks and we would identify the area given. To identify the area, you must know the houses, streets and establishments nearly. Then you have to mark them or put legends. It was like the hardcopy of Open Street Map. After that we had another exercise using a computer. We have to go to a website named www.fieldpapers.org it was similar to OSM then we have to find and our houses/neighborhoods and just map the entire block. Then we would create an atlas of our neighborhood.

In conclusion learning the basics of mapping would help develop other skills. Studying common issues or mistakes would enable a more efficient output. Mapping makes us aware of our surrounding specially in our communities, making us see things from a different perspective and even showing us what is beyond the maps. I would like to thank my professor Mr. Erwin Olario of MapAmore for sharing his knowledge and experience with mapping.

What Characters Would the Other 'Friends' Cast Play on 'Will & Grace?'      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Two of the most successful sitcoms to ever air on NBC has been Friends and Will & Grace. The former started a couple of years beforehand in 1994 and finished in 2004, while the latter appeared on the peacock network from 1998 to 2006.

Many legendary shows have done some sort of crossover promotion in the past, where lovable characters appear on the opposite program in an effort to jack up the ratings during sweeps or whatnot. Friends and W&G never did that with one another during their original run, even though Sean Hayes revealed on Watch What Happens Live last September that there was an idea of having Matt LeBlanc’s character of Joey on his show, seeing as they are both played struggling actors on each individual series.

It was just revealed earlier this week that David Schwimmer, who played the down-on-his-luck Ross on Friends, will be featured in a recurring role on the upcoming second season of W&G’s revival. He will play the love interest of Grace, played by Debra Messing. Comedian and late-night host Chelsea Handler will also be making an appearance as a power lesbian.

So, this got me thinking: what if the other five cast members from Friends (Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry) all made an appearance as well? Would it be too much for us to handle? Jennifer recently revealed how she “fantasizes” about bringing the show back to life… so this could be a great way of teasing that sort of thing, even if they are not playing the characters that made each of them super famous.

Here’s what I think each actor should play if they ever decide to drop by the set of Will & Grace.

Jennifer Aniston: If Jennifer is so game to bring Friends back on the air… then this is where we could see her revive Rachel Green. The storylines could run rampant here, but the focus of her being on the show is to really see if she’s still with Ross, how Emma is doing now that she’s in high school, and who she keeps in contact with from the original group. This is all a fantasy, but boy would it be a ratings juggernaut should it ever happen.

Courteney Cox: There’s a lot of avenues that they could do with this. A dramatic twist could be that Courteney plays the woman that Leo (Harry Connick Jr.) slept with while they were in Cambodia back at the end of season 6. A lot of storylines became resolved when W&G was revived, however this one never did, and it would be interesting to see how this could play out knowing what really happened with Grace and Leo at the end of it all (their marriage just didn’t work).

Lisa Kudrow: This would be downright hilarious. Lisa played Ursula Buffay, Phoebe’s twin sister on Mad About You, over the span of 24 episodes (as well as some appearances on Friends). Her role of a ditzy waitress would work perfectly opposite Sean’s of Jack in case he is ever unemployed and must become a waiter again. The storyline would be that they are both up for a high paying catering gig of sorts, and shenanigans would ensue between the two for one of them to get it. In the end, neither of them does… just like when he had to battle Will Arnett for a dancer’s spot in Janet Jackson’s tour back on season 7 of the show’s original run.

Matt LeBlanc: I’m going to go out on a whim and say this… Matt could be Stan Walker, Karen Walker’s husband (who has never been seen on the show). He’s lost a ton of weight and finally appears as a super hunk for the boozy assistant to parade around in sheer glory. He falls off the bandwagon by the end of the episode, however, after getting stung by a bee which brings him back to his original gluttonous self.

Matthew Perry: Simple. Matthew was a straight guy that Will had a thing for when they were both junior lawyers… that isn’t straight after all. I mean, everyone thought Chandler was gay on Friends, so why should this be any different?

East West Players Announces Cast And Creative Team Of VIETGONE      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

East West Players (EWP), the nation's longest-running professional theater of color in the country and the largest producing organization of Asian American artistic work, is pleased to announce the cast and creative team for the Los Angeles premiere of Qui Nguyen's Vietgone, which the New York Times has hailed as "a raucous comedy" and Rolling Stone has described as "a wild, enjoyable ride." Directed by Jennifer Chang, Vietgone begins performances on October 18 and runs until November 11, 2018, with opening night on October 25, 2018.

Vietgone spins a modern twist on the classic boy-meets-girl story: Quang and Tong are refugees fleeing the Vietnam War, who hook up and fall in love in a relocation camp in Arkansas. Bold and fearless, Vietgone takes audiences on a hilariously rip-roaring ride across 1970s America with a hot soundtrack that serves up hip-hop, sass, and revolution.

"We are thrilled to present the Los Angeles premiere of Vietgone, a play that delves into the heart of the Vietnamese refugee experience, as seen through the lens of a remarkable love story. Qui is an incredible storyteller with a unique, fresh voice. Inspired by how his parents met and fell in love, the play weaves in personal history and a powerful narrative about immigration, war, and forced relocation. We're so excited to open our new season, Culture Shock, with such a bold, daring play that is both funny and moving," says Snehal Desai, EWP Producing Artistic Director.

Making their EWP debuts are Paul Yen (CBS's Young Sheldon, ABC's How To Get Away With Murder) as Quang; Sylvia Kwan (Water by the Spoonful) as Tong; Jane Lui (Pou in Cambodian Rock Band) as Asian Girl, American Girl, Thu, Huong, Translator, Flower Girl; Scott Ly (FOX's Bones) as Nhan, Nhan, Khue, Asian Guy, American Guy; and Albert Park (The Car Plays 2018, All's Well That Ends Well) as Playwright, Giai, Bobby, Captain Chambers, Redneck Biker, Hippie Dude.

The creative team includes Jennifer Chang (Director), Arash Haile (Composer), Thomas Isao Morinaka and Aaron Aoki (Fight Choreography), Kaitlyn Pietras and Jason H. Thompson (Scenic and Projection Design), Tom Ontiveros (Lighting Design), John Zalewski (Sound Design), Stephanie A. Nguyen (Costume Design), Glenn Michael Baker (Prop Master), and Jade Cagalawan (Stage Manager).

All performances of Vietgone will be staged at the David Henry Hwang Theater at the Union Center of the Arts at 120 Judge John Aiso Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Previews are Thursday, October 18 through Sunday, October 21, with 8pm shows from Friday to Saturday, and a 2pm matinee show on Sunday. All preview seats are $30. Regular performances are from Friday, October 26 through Sunday, November 11, with 8pm shows from Thursday to Saturday, and 2pm matinee shows on Saturday and Sunday. Opening night is Thursday, October 25 at 8pm. The production runs until November 11.

Tickets may be purchased online at eastwestplayers.org or by calling (213) 625-7000, making sure to mention any wheelchair/accessible seating needs. Student, senior, and group discounts are available. General Admission ticket prices range from $40 to $60. Dates, details, and ticket prices are subject to change.

East West Players is thrilled to include Vietgone as part of Culture Shock, a 53rd Anniversary Season that is about disrupting the status quo and taking charge of the "outsider" narrative. This production is made possible with generous support from the S. Mark Taper Foundation.

East West Players (EWP), the nation's longest-running professional theater of color in the country and the largest producing organization of Asian American artistic work, was founded in 1965, at a time when Asian Pacific Islanders (APIs) faced limited or no opportunities to see their experiences reflected outside of stereotypical and demeaning caricatures in the American landscape. EWP not only ensures that API stories are told, but works to increase access, inclusion, and representation in the economy.
