Vienna, Austria, August 8, 2018 — The International Press Institute (IPI), a global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists, has expressed grave concern to the government of Bangladesh over recent intolerance towards objective reporting.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, IPI has urged her to take robust steps to prevent this growing narrow-mindedness.

“Thanks to the role of the press, strong public opinion was built across the world in favor of the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971. The writers of the Bangladesh constitution recognized the importance of a free press by guaranteeing press freedom in the constitution. We urge you to keep this spirit in mind and ensure that the government upholds the constitutional protections for the press,” IPI wrote in its letter.

“The IPI network is also extremely concerned about your government’s move to replace the ICT Act with the Digital Security Act, provisions of which will restrict the right of journalists to expose acts of corruption that you have consistently promised to eradicate.”

“The bill, if approved by Parliament in the current form, will have a serious, oppressive impact not only on journalists but also on all citizens of Bangladesh,” the letter said.

“We, therefore, urge you to act immediately and take appropriate action to end intolerance towards reporters and hold talks with journalists’ bodies in the country to create a conducive atmosphere for press freedom in Bangladesh, which has been severely compromised by recent incidents,” IPI stated in its letter.

IPI welcomes India Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s quick decision to rescind controversial policy.

International Press Institute, IPI, Modi, India

Recently, the International Press Institute (IPI) welcomed the prompt decision by the prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, to revoke a controversial policy issued by India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry had issued a statement announcing that it would withdraw government press accreditation of those found to have published or broadcast fake news. The announcement did not define what constituted false intelligence. After condemnation by the press in India, primarily by the TV News Channels, who vehemently opposed the move, Prime Minister Modi intervened and ordered the withdrawal of the announcement.

Commending Prime Minister Modi’s immediate decision to uphold media freedom, IPI’s executive director, Barbara Trionfi, said that the new rule would have severely impaired the freedom of TV News Channels in India and their ability to report on crucial issues. ‘’We are thankful for Prime Minister Modi’s quick response to this misguided policy”, she said.

Dear Michele,
As I visit programs overseas, I’ve seen too many families who have had to flee their homes. I’ve seen too many children at risk. I can’t help but think of my own children–if I saw them in danger–they would be my first priority.

Help Now
Girls and boys have fled with their parents from Myanmar into Bangladesh. But, almost 3,000 of these children are without their parents. Whose priority are they? I can’t help but think, how can we help?
For the last 8 years, families have fled Syria–half of them children. As a father, as a Catholic, as a fellow human being–it doesn’t matter whether the children are next door or around the world. They need shelter, they need love, they need stability.
These children need to feel like kids again–to have someone look out for themto play, to laugh, to learn.
Give a gift today, and you help vulnerable children around the world receive counseling, have protected places to play, receive nourishing food, gain the chance to visit a doctor and thrive for years to come. By putting them first, you provide hope for their futures–and all of our futures.
Peace and light,

Demand Justice for Bangladeshi Student Protesters Beaten, Jailed by Government!      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Violence dominated much of Bangladesh this past week as peaceful student protesters faced swift and violent oppression at the hands of a student group linked directly to the nation’s ruling party, the Awami League.

This violence was paired with an almost total internet blackout in Dhaka, allowing counter-protesters to commit atrocities without the outside world being aware. So severe and traumatic was this campaign that since, student protesters have resigned to accepting defeat.

As it stands, the Bangladeshi government is working hard to determine the identities of student protesters, no doubt with the intent to prosecute and punish them for violating a federal law which forbids criticizing the government on social media. An untold number of demonstrators have been arrested and their fates remain uncertain.

Because it seems likely that not only will these individuals not see genuine justice but also that the government youth group responsible for the violence will not face any consequences, the international community has a responsibility to conduct an independent probe into the events that transpired in Bangladesh.

Tell the United Nations that this is the exact situation it was formed to deal with by adding your name to this petition! Together we can find justice.

The United Nations said Wednesday it still had not been granted independent access to the epicentre of Myanmar's Rohingya crisis two months after inking a deal with the government to carry out work there.

UN refugee and development agencies signed an agreement with Myanmar in June that permitted them to operate in northern Rakhine state where hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims were driven from their homes in an army campaign that started almost a year ago.

The agreement was supposed to let the UN help Myanmar create conditions on the ground that would be conducive to a safe and voluntary return for the stateless Rohingya, many of whom are currently languishing in camps in southeast Bangladesh.

So far they have refused to come back without any guarantee of security or basic rights such as citizenship.

The UN agencies said in a joint statement that requests dating back to mid-June for international employees to be allowed to start work in northern Rakhine state remained unanswered.

Though they highlighted some "encouraging" steps, such as visits to the area by UN officials, they said Myanmar needed to provide "effective access".

The UN refugee agency has kept an office in northern Rakhine state throughout the crisis but staff are not able to work in the field freely.

The statement also called on Myanmar to provide freedom of movement for all communities and to address the root cause of the crisis.

In Myanmar, the Rohingya are widely regarded as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and most live under apartheid-like conditions, cut off from adequate healthcare and unable to travel.

Some 700,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh since August last year. Living in cramped shelters they have recounted horrific testimonies of murder, rape and torture at the hands of army troops and mobs of ethnic Rakhine Buddhists.

The US and UN brand the operations carried out by security forces as ethnic cleansing.

But Myanmar's military says it was defending itself against Rohingya terrorists and denies targeting civilians.

A spokesman for the Myanmar government could not be reached for comment.

Rakhine has been largely sealed off since the crisis exploded, with Myanmar undertaking a massive reconstruction programme that critics say amounts to the erasure of Rohingya history.

Myanmar says request for ICC probe in Rakhine crisis ‘meritless’      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Myanmar said Thursday that a request at the International Criminal Court to probe the mass deportation of Rohingya Muslims from the country was "meritless" and should be rejected.

Some 700,000 Rohingya were violently expelled from their homes in Myanmar's Rakhine state in a military crackdown that started almost a year ago after terrorists attacked border guard posts.

The stateless minority fled to Bangladesh where they recounted widespread rape, murder and the burning of villages at the hands of security forces in operations the US and UN have called ethnic cleansing.

Myanmar has vigorously denied that it orchestrated the campaign and said it was defending itself, but international pressure for accountability has mounted.

In April the chief prosecutor at the ICC Fatou Bensouda took the unprecedented step of asking judges to consider whether the court could extend its jurisdiction to Myanmar, which is not a member state.

A pre-trial chamber asked Myanmar to submit a formal response to the request by July 27, even though the Southeast Asian country has long maintained that it is not a party to the treaty that governs the court.

The deadline passed but Myanmar went into more detail Thursday about why it did not respond formally, reiterating its previous position and claiming that the prosecutor relied on one-sided and biased sources.

It also said it was unable to view submissions from Bangladesh and that the ICC had accepted briefs of "mostly charged narratives of harrowing personal tragedies calculated to place emotional pressure on the court".

Myanmar concluded that the request for a ruling on jurisdiction is "meritless and should be dismissed".

The statement said Myanmar had also established its own independent commission of inquiry though critics counter that the move falls into a pattern of creating investigative bodies that have no impact on addressing abuses.

Bangladesh is a member of the Rome Statute underpinning the ICC and the prosecutor has argued that deportation is akin to a cross-border shooting.

No decision has been made on the request but the legal thorniness surrounding it and the fact that a referral to the ICC at the Security Council could face pushback from China and Russia have raised doubts about whether it will proceed.

Rights groups have said senior members of Myanmar's security forces including commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing should be investigated, but so far the country has faced little real censure on the international

stage except for targeted sanctions against a handful of military officials.

Myanmar and Bangladesh signed a repatriation agreement but the deal has stalled amid fears from Rohingya refugees that they won't be guaranteed safety and full rights.

The Rohingya were stripped of their citizenship decades ago and cast as outsiders in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, with little freedom of movement or access to healthcare.

Comment on Pakistan Needs a Strong New Leader, by Eric Margolis      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Indians, the nation who've by their own actions turned their online communities into meme templates because of the delusion (Superpower chants) and the generally misplaced sense of grandeur (showing off about having space missions whilst 50% of India defecates openly, a front where India makes very little progress), always incorporate a healthy degree of projection onto Pakistan in their comments. Their absolute, frothing-at-the-moth jingoism is not something they can restrain and as a result their outlook toward us Pakistanis, their enemy of old, is one that is so void of any sense that it simply piggybacks off contemporary and very neocon Western narratives (i.e attacking Pakistan's Muslim character all the time). First off, the UN set preconditions that India violated in Kashmir. I wasn't aware of this until recently when a UN officer's (P Graham) report from 1967 was declassified a few years ago from now stated that Pakistan had begun the de-militarization of its side of the ceasefire line in Kashmir in 1948, as per the first and second UN resolutions, but India declined to do so after Pakistan had started and thus Pakistan stopped. The following proposals Graham mentioned in his review of the UNICOP of 1948 similarly were rejected by the Indians in dealing with the situation caused by India not following Pakistan's lead in de-militarizing. See that? The Indians got nothing on us. All that they do is project, project, project. For example, 'Pakistan has ethnically cleansed its Hindus'. False. There has never, in history, been a single incident of government, or political parties-orchestrated, genocide of Hindus. Indians in their endless crass ignorance cite the drop in percentage of Hindus in Pakistan's population between 1947 and the 1970s as 'oh where did they go, must've been killed!'... Despite not knowing that when East Pakistan seceded with months worth of Indian military assistance the majority of Pakistani Hindus became Bangladeshi and thus removed from the Pakistani population. Duh, right? Just, DUH. But Indians can't think. Indians can't think when they come to projecting at Pakistan. Does Pakistan have any state-led ethnic cleansing of minorities? No. Does India? Hell-to-the-yes! Gujarat Riots 2002, current Indian PM and CM of Gujarat at the time Narendra Modi was caught in public encouraging Hindu rioters to kill Gujarati Muslims (killed 2000, slaughtered pregnant women as well). Bombay Riots 1992, also targeting Muslims. Heavy involvement of the RSS. Nellie Massacre (1980s; can't remember exact year), targeting Muslims. Heavy involvement of the RSS. That's just three thus far, and even one is more than what happens in Pakistan. Indians might have, had they any tact, made the excuse that India simply has more minorities (10% Muslim, or perhaps 15%, with 57% Brahmin i.e upper caste Hindus and perhaps 5% Sikhs) and thus they shouldn't be compared to Pakistan but they themselves initiate the comparisons. And look a lot worse. Pakistan has been learning, India has been de-learning. India has been hooking itself up to the steroids of hyper-nationalism while Pakistan has been fighting for its survival. Our war against terrorists is a war against terrorists who call other Muslims apostates and slaughter them. India's war against Kashmiri youth picking up guns to fight their thuggish, rapist army is no war against terror.

Amid Senas mixed signals, PM dials Uddhav to thank for Sena support in RS      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Amid blow hot and blow cold relationship and seeking to iron out the differences between the BJP and the Shiv Sena, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called up BJP ally and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray to thank him for lending support to NDA candidate Harivansh for crucial election to the post of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman. Described as a rare gesture, this has been second sincere attempt from the BJP top leadership toreach out to its disgruntled but oldest ally. The Prime Ministers phone call to Sena chief came days after BJP president Amit Shah personallyreached out to Mr Thackeray on August 7 and sought support for JD(U) leader Harivansh, who defeated UPA nominee B K Hariprasad. Senas decision to support JD(U) candidate Mr Harivansh came within 19 days since July 20s No Trustdebate when Sena stayed away from the debate and voting. There is an apparent compulsion on both sides to stick together.Senas robust pro-Hindutva inclination makes it difficult for the Maharashtra based outfit go a long wayalongside parties like Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress and for that matter even the Congress.Shiv Sena knows it is ideologically aligned with the BJP and in recent weeks found it amazing the manner Trinamool Congress and other opposition parties opposed the NRC exercise in Assam.Sena has been always known for its clear and rather unambiguous anti-Bangladeshi immigrant stance. On the other hand, the BJP too cannot dump Shiv Sena as long as Mr Thackerays party enjoys a firm grip of support mass level across Maharashtra, If Hindutva is a mother-like phenomenon, Shiv Sena is like blood relation ally. Why should we discard them? a senior BJP leader from Maharashtra has said on July 21 - a day after the No Trust Motion. The source maintained that there are compulsions for the BJP as Sena continued to have strong presence at the ground level in the western state. This fact cannot be underestimated. But there are still issues those need to be addressed both at the national and state levels between the two parties. We abstained from voting during the no-confidence motion as we wanted to give a clear message about ourunhappiness. It will be wrong to say we are with the opposition parties, a Sena leader said. The two allies had also fought the bypolls separately in Maharashtras Palghar region and after its debacle, the Sena had referred BJP as its biggest political enemy. Shiv Sena has also time and again said that it will not mind contesting forthcoming 2019 Lok Sabha polls alone. UNI DEVN SB 1052

Speaking with the media, Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) said, "Soyyam was arrested from Singhola village on GT Karnal road on Thursday while Azim was arrested earlier this week from northwest Delhi," adding that they were involved in supplying arms to criminals in Delhi from four-five years.

Somehow, they care about, specifically, any people politically convenient, and only insofar as it serves politically, to attack their opponents. However, people who exist by the millions, in dreadful conditions, are only defended by the ridiculous promise to smash the patriarchy and herald thereby a gold age, a utopia.

"Semacam guide-lah," ucap dia.

Kusno menyebut, di Masjid Nabawi terdapat sekitar 200-an pekerja Indonesia.

Sebab, keluarga masih butuh peluh tubuhnya.

"Enggak tahu. Masih betah dan membutuhkan. Anak-anaknya masih ke sekolah," jelas Murtiah.

Berdasarkan data Bank Indonesia, hingga kuarter 3 2016, sebanyak 977 ribu warga Indonesia menjadi tenaga kerja di Arab Saudi. Harapan mereka satu, menumpuk pundi riyal dari negeri Petro Dollar.

How to Say “Happy Birthday” in 25 Different Languages      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Happy Birthday to you! The gifts, the cake, the celebration…

Birthdays are a joyful occasion, to be sure!

Traditions for celebrations around the world always vary, but birthdays are one of the things that all people have in common, even if they speak different languages. So take this as an opportunity for more speaking practice! After all, who doesn’t like to be wished a Happy Birthday? You could even plan a birthday celebration in the language you’re learning!

Have you wondered if other cultures sing a Happy Birthday song, like in English? Do they give gifts? What about cake? Read on and learn how to say Happy Birthday in many languages around the world, and the cultural meaning behind it.

Happy Birthday in Spanish: Feliz Cumpleaños

Translated as “Happy Completed Years,” everyone’s birthday is a big day of celebration in most Spanish-speaking countries. In Mexico, they sing their own unique birthday song, Las Mañanitas (“Little Mornings”). And instead of blowing out candles on your cake, the birthday boy or girl has to eat the first bite without using utensils or hands. Usually, a family member will shove the cake in their face, all while singing “Mordida! Mordida!” And, of course, a birthday party is not complete without the world-famous piñata!

Happy Birthday in French: Bon Anniversaire

In French, people wish each other a “Good Birthday!” Birthday parties in France are much like those in English-speaking countries. They celebrate with a big party, cake and presents, and sing Joyeux Anniversaire. The big difference is that schoolchildren have Wednesdays off, and go to school on Saturdays. So most birthday parties are actually thrown on Wednesday when all the kids are out of school. As for Sundays, that’s considered family time. So most parents won’t organise birthday parties then.

In Quebec, you’ll hear Bonne fête! far more often than Bon anniversaire. This literally translates as “Good party!”

Happy Birthday in Italian: Buon Compleanno

The most notable thing about birthdays in Italy? They prefer to stay home! The food and cakes are often homemade. But when it’s your 18th birthday, everyone goes all out. It’s not unusual to see an 18th birthday party with hundreds of people wishing you a “Good Birthday!”

Happy Birthday in German: Alles Gute zum Geburtstag

This is more accurately translated as, “All the best on your birthday.” Birthday parties started in Germany in 1200 A.D. and are known as kinderfeste. In Germany, it’s considered quite bad luck to wish someone a Happy Birthday early, and they have many fun celebrations based on their age. Such as turning 16 and getting flour dumped all over you, or having eggs cracked over your head when you turn 18!

Happy Birthday in Japanese: お誕生日おめでとうございます (Otanjoubi Omedetou Gozaimasu)

“Congratulations on your birthday!” In Japan, they celebrate Shichi-Go-San, which literally means 7-5-3. These are lucky numbers and children go to a Shinto shrine on 15th November if they had a lucky birthday that year. They pray and give thanks for their good health and strength. All children go when they are three years old, boys when they are five, and girls when they are seven.

Happy Birthday in Korean: 생일 축하 (Saeng-il Chugha)

Also translated as “Congratulations on your birthday.” In Korea, 100 days after you’re born, you celebrate your first birthday! Parents celebrate their child’s life with a small feast, and they predict the child’s future by the items he or she picks up. If the child is sick, the parents will skip over the day so as to not bring bad luck on their child. They also send rice cakes to as many friends and family as possible because sharing rice cakes brings a long life. Lastly, they offer up food such as rice to Samshin Halmoni, the Grandmother Spirit, for taking care of the baby.

Happy Birthday in Chinese: 生日快乐 (Shēngrì Kuàilè)

In China, birthdays are mostly celebrated when you are very young or older than 50. It’s common on your birthday to eat longevity noodles without breaking them so you bring in good luck and a long life. Some people even wait until they are 60 years old to have their first birthday bash! There are also some taboos about certain ages, so men don’t celebrate their 40th birthdays, and women don't celebrate 30, 33, or 66.

The literal translation of Shēngrì Kuàilè is something like, “Birthday is Happy.”

Happy Birthday in Cantonese: 生日快樂 (Sang Yat Fai Lok)

Be careful with your birthday gifts! Never give a clock or a pair of shoes as a gift, as the words for them sound like “funeral,” which is terrible luck. And gifts should be given wrapped in red or gold paper, especially for an elderly person.

Happy Birthday in Russian: С днем рождения (S Dnem Rozhdeniya)

In Russia, the birthday tradition is to pull on the birthday boy or girl’s ears by how many years old he or she is. They tell the child, “Grow up -- don’t be noodles,” so the child will grow up strong. They don’t sing a birthday song, but if the person has survived a dangerous incident - like a car crash - they celebrate that day as their second birthday.

Happy Birthday in Portuguese: Feliz Aniversário

Feliz aniversário means “Happy Anniversary," and it's the frequent translation for "Happy Birthday." But it’s more common to just say “Parabéns” (“Congratulations”). Birthdays in Portugal are very similar to those in English-speaking countries. But birthdays in Brazil, like Russia, include pulling on the ears for good luck. They also decorate their homes with brightly-coloured paper flowers and banners for the festivities.

Happy Birthday in Dutch: Gefeliciteerd Met Je Verjaardag

“Congratulations on your birthday!” Birthdays are a big deal in the Netherlands. And most people have a Birthday Calendar that, interestingly, they keep by the toilet! The calendar reminds them of everyone’s birthdays for the year because forgetting one (or trying to skip your own!) is a major slight to your loved ones. A 50th birthday is the biggest celebration of all, as it’s said the man or woman “sees Abraham” or “sees Sarah” – referring to the biblical couple who bore a child in old age.

Happy Birthday in Afrikaans: Veels Geluk Met Jou Verjaarsdag

Like Dutch, this saying means “Congratulations on your birthday.” Do you see a consistent theme here? Most countries say “congratulations” instead of “happy.” In South Africa, the 21st birthday is the most significant. Parents usually give their children a key made of gold, silver, or aluminium, to symbolise unlocking the future and all it has to offer.

Happy Birthday in Polish: Wszystkiego Najlepszego Z Okazji Urodzin

“All the best for your birthday!” In Poland, they have their own birthday song which goes: “Sto lat, sto lat, niech żyje żyje nam” (“A hundred years, a hundred years may they live”). It’s also common to have a separate celebration for your birthday called, imieniny. This is a celebration on the feast day of the saint the person is named after!

Happy Birthday in Swedish: Grattis På Födelsedagen

“Birthday congratulations!” The Swedish love celebrating birthdays, and often wake up the birthday boy or girl by bringing breakfast and presents in bed. They sing their own birthday song, “ja, ma du leva” ("Yes, may you live"). They traditionally celebrate with cake coated in green marzipan, and presents are wrapped in the colours of the Swedish flag: blue and gold.

Happy Birthday in Danish: Tillykke Med Fødselsdagen

“Good wishes for your birthday!” The Danes make a BIG deal about birthdays. They have a huge love for their flag, and a miniature flagpole by your birthday cake (or on your birthday cake) is a must. They also make great fun with the Danish birthday song. The birthday boy or girl gets to choose which instruments the singers will pretend to play while singing! (Like air-guitar, except nearly a full band or orchestra.) It’s quite a lively event.

Happy Birthday in Norwegian: Gratulerer Med Dagen

“Congratulations with the day!” In Norway, it’s a big deal to celebrate “round” birthdays – 30, 40, 50, and so on. They’ll sing “Hurra for deg som fyller ditt år” (Hurray for you who fills the year) and host a huge party. For children in school, the birthday child will dance in front of the class while the others sing the Norwegian birthday song.

Happy Birthday in Finnish: Hyvää Syntymäpäivää

While “Hyvää syntymäpäivää” is most commonly said, you can also say, “Onnea syntymäpäivänäsi,” which is more common on birthday cards and Facebook. The Finnish also celebrate Name Day, where a different name is assigned to each day of the year. The day that your name is assigned to, you get to celebrate!

Happy Birthday in Tagalog: Maligayang Kaarawan

“Happy wishes!” Because the Philippines is predominantly Catholic, birthdays often start with Mass. They have four big birthday milestones: 1st birthday, 7th, 18th (for girls), and 21st (for boys). Seventh birthdays are celebrated as the age which kids make the first steps towards adulthood. This is the age where kids are held more accountable for their actions and start primary school. A girl’s 18th birthday is called her “debut” and is celebrated with 18 flowers, 18 candles, and 18 treasures.

Happy Birthday in Swahili: Furaha ya Kuzaliwa

“Happiness for the day of being born.” Birthdays aren’t a major thing in most Swahili-speaking countries, and many times it’s only the day of birth that's celebrated. The baby’s birth is cause for a big community celebration and party. Each group has individual traditions – even as simple as the baby’s first journey with his or her mother.

Happy Birthday in Hindi: जन्मदिन की शुभकामनाएं (Janmadin Kee Shubhakaamanaen)

“Good wishes for your birthday.” In many parts of India, birthdays are celebrated with both Western and Hindu practices. A birthday usually starts with a blessing at a temple, abundant prayers, and a mixture of rice and turmeric paste anointed on the forehead. Then the day's followed with more Western traditions such as the Happy Birthday song and cake cutting.

Happy Birthday in Bengali: শুভ জন্মদিন (Śubha Janmadina)

Birthday celebrations are not very common in Bangladesh. But when a baby is born, sweets are given out amongst family and friends to celebrate. They also hold a small celebration for the naming ceremony.

Happy Birthday in Tamil: பிறந்தநாள் வாழ்த்துக்கள் (Piṟantanāḷ Vāḻttukkaḷ)

This translates as “Wishing success and happiness on your birthday.” In Sri Lanka, babies celebrate their first birthday at 31 days old and receive a special gift from their parents. Usually it’s a good luck charm, one that the child keeps with them for the rest of their life. Going to a shrine and doing good deeds to attract good karma on one’s birthday is also common tradition.

Happy Birthday in Telugu: పుట్టినరోజు శుభాకాంక్షలు (Puṭṭinarōju śubhākāṅkṣalu)

In the Telugu-speaking region of Andhra Pradesh, girls will often decorate their hair for their birthday. They'll weave in many flowers (think of Rapunzel’s braided hair in the film Tangled) and will receive gifts of turmeric rice from their parents.

Happy Birthday in Malayalam: ജന്മദിനാശംസകൾ (Janmadināśansakaḷ)

In the southern state of Kerala, India, birthdays don’t always follow the Gregorian calendar. Many South Indians follow the Malayalam calendar instead. This system calculates their birthdays based on astrology. So many times, their birthdays aren't celebrated on their day of birth, but their astrological birthday.

Happy Birthday in Arabic: عيد مولد سعيد (Eyd Mawlid Saeid)

“Happy feast of birth.” Birthday celebrations are not always a priority in Arabic-speaking countries. But most celebrations are like those in Western culture. In Egypt, some people celebrate the birth of the baby by dipping the child in the Nile river, a ceremony stemming from Pharaonic times. On the seventh day after birth, they hold a celebration called subu and celebrate with many flowers, fruit, and rituals for good luck.

Happy Birthday in Esperanto: Feliĉan Naskiĝtagon

Although Esperanto is an artificially-constructed language, it does have one birthday tie: an Esperanto holiday, Zamenhof's Birthday. Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof created Esperanto to be a universal second language and to promote internationalism. So, people who speak the language use his birthday as a good excuse to get together.

Seven arms and ammunition dealers arrested; Police seize huge explosive materials      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Ahead of Independence Day celebration, police have swung into action, arrested seven arms dealers and recovered a huge cache of explosive materials, gelatin sticks, detonators and arms and ammunition from three districts in West Bengal. Police on Friday said they seized some 4800 gelatin sticks and 4500 detonators last night when two persons in a Maruti van were smuggling those explosives at Md Bazar in Birbum district from where a JMB (Jamait Mujahiddin of Bangladesh) suspect was arrested recently. Police also seized some incriminating documents from the two, who would be produced before a court in Birbhum today. In another incident, police in South 24 Parganas along with Special Security Group during frisking of a van on the Matla river bridge arrested three arms dealers andseized 12 single bore pistols, nine rounds of bullets of automatic rifles and four cell phones. The special operation group (SGO) of Baruipur and policemen from Canning raided the car following an input and arrested three arms dealers identified as Anwar Mehboob (29), Rubel Mondal ( 20) and Jhantu Pal ( 21) - all the three hail from Jalangi of Murshidabad district. Police said they also seized some explosives from them. They admitted under interrogation that their kingpin is a woman, who supplies arms and ammunition even to Bangladesh in 24 hours after getting order. On our radar:

The women of Syria’s war prisons

Over the past few months, the Syrian government has been quietly issuing death notices for hundreds of political prisoners who died in its jails. Many of the deaths appear to have taken place in the early years of the country’s seven year war, and analysts believe that the flurry of notices suggests president Bashar al-Assad’s regime may be signalling it is firmly in control of the country and no longer fears the anger that admitting these deaths could provoke.

Many thousands of detainees have gone into Syria’s notorious detention system, and among those who actually made it out is artist Azza Abo Rebieh, whose drawings of her fellow prisoners in Damascus’ Adra prison are profiled in the New York Times this week. Abo Rabieh, who painted protest murals at the start of the uprising against al-Assad and later smuggled food and medicine to displaced people, draws the women she met in detention from 2015 to 2016. She lives and draws in Beirut now, and the images she makes, as well as the stories she tells, are haunting.

And still the war is not over for civilians in northwestern Idlib province, where the UN estimates a looming government offensive on the last major rebel-held territory in the country could displace as many as 700,000 people. Many of Idlib’s 2.5 million civilians have already fled or been evacuated from their homes elsewhere in Syria, and the government has begun dropping leaflets over the province urging residents to cooperate with the army.

In search of “tangible progress” in Myanmar

It was billed as the first step in a long process to return Rohingya refugees to Myanmar. But two months after UN agencies signed a secretive agreement to explore repatriation with Myanmar’s government, there’s been little “tangible progress” to do just that. The UN’s refugee agency, UNHCR, and its development arm, UNDP, released a statement this week urging the government to “improve conditions” in northern Rakhine State, where a military campaign last August pushed hundreds of thousands of Rohingya people into neighbouring Bangladesh. Calling for “tangible” progress, of course, implies there has been anything but. One key takeaway: the very basis of the controversial agreement was that UNHCR and UNDP would be given access to northern Rakhine, which has largely been closed off to international aid groups for the last year. This hasn’t happened. Both UN agencies submitted travel requests to start working in mid-June; the government hasn’t replied. In the meantime, remaining Rohingya and ethnic Rakhine communities in the state continue to “live in fear of one another” and there’s been no movement at all on the core issue for most Rohingya – a clear path to citizenship.

The ripples of #MeToo

The recent scandals in aid agencies and subsequent crackdown mean more cases of sexual harassment or abuse are being dealt with, according to the Thomson Reuters Foundation. For example, the Norwegian Refugee Council and Save the Children disclosed increases in reported cases in 2018 compared to last year. Others told TRF they expected cases to rise, while some in the survey of 21 agencies gave fewer details or were unable to report numbers yet. A few more developments on #MeToo issues:

- An IRIN investigation in Central African Republic, “I have no power to complain”, reveals new allegations of abuse by UN peacekeepers as well as broken promises on follow-up care for victims and botched investigations

- A pattern of alleged harassment by an official of UN Women was reported by Newsweek, and the UN agency has called upon investigators to wrap up the case, without offering details

- The British Parliament issued a report on sexual exploitation in the aid sector finding "complacency verging on complicity" and more concern for reputations than victims

- UN OCHA will provide a $1 million fund to help aid agencies conduct thorough investigations

- The Geneva-based policy group, the Inter-Agency Standing Committee, has published a detailed account of measures under discussion to prevent “transgressors” being re-hired

The civilian cost of bombing Islamic State

It has been four years since the United States first announced it was using airstrikes against so-called Islamic State in Iraq, an operation that began near Erbil. Other countries later joined the anti-IS coalition in Iraq and Syria. Nearly 30,000 airstrikes plus plenty of ground fighting later, the militants now hold little in the way of territory and are on the back foot. But, as casualty monitor Airwars points out, civilians paid dearly for the liberation of cities like Raqqa and Mosul. Counting casualties in war is tricky, but Airwars estimates that between 6,500 and 10,000 civilians were killed in coalition air and artillery strikes. The coalition puts the numbers much lower, at just over 1,000, but Amnesty International this week said its own investigations had prompted the US-led coalition to admit that its aerial bombardments during the Raqqa offensive killed 77 civilians. And the human rights watchdog says that’s likely just “the tip of the iceberg”. Meanwhile, without any major cities to its name, IS is reverting to the horrifying tactics that first brought it notoriety: executions and kidnapping minorities.

Counting the dead, correctly

On a related and similarly morbid topic, humanitarian situations that ought to ring alarm bells don't do so because mortality data is badly calculated on the basis of a 30-year-old benchmark, according to researcher Fabrice Weissman. What makes a crisis severe is the numbers dying. As people still die of natural causes, emergency workers need to know how many deaths are above normal. To do this, they calculate the crude mortality rate (CMR) of "deaths per 10,000 per day". Many humanitarian organisations work on the basis that a rate of one or more death per 10,000 per day is an emergency. (It can get worse than that: UNHCR benchmarks say 5/10,000 per day is a "major catastrophe"). (This primer from think tank ODI can tell you more.)

In a new blog, MSF veteran Weissman says the 1/10,000/day threshold is based on the assumption that twice the underlying rate should count as an emergency. But he finds that the underlying rate (0.5/10,000/day) was based on a US review of routine mortality rates in various African countries in the 1980s (which may have since halved). A more careful application of the benchmark should, where possible, be set at double the real normal rate in the surrounding population but too often is not, Weissman suggests. (This is also recommended by the Sphere humanitarian standards group). Taking the example of northeastern Nigeria, he cites an MSF study where people displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency had a mortality rate of more than double the local population (0.41 compared to 0.19) but since neither passed the 1/10,000/day cutoff, field teams couldn't convince their management that the situation was as serious as it really was. Weissman writes that this issue is "highly political" as it defines what is "excessive" and therefore requiring exceptional action. He has a simple proposal: cut the threshold in half.

In case you missed it, 6 August-10 August

Indonesia: The death toll continues to climb after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Lombok on 5 August, but the government has so far “strongly” declined international aid, according to the AHA Centre, a regional inter-governmental disaster coordination agency. The government says at least 321 people have died. Yayasan Sayangi Tunas Cilik, a local NGO, says communities an hour’s drive from the district capital in North Lombok have been cut off by landslides and are living in tents without any help.

South Sudan: Rival leaders in the world’s youngest country may have taken another step towards ending one of the world’s most brutal and devastating civil wars by signing a deal on power-sharing and governance that’s meant to pave the way for a comprehensive peace accord. President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar expressed regret for the “untold human suffering” their rivalry has brought about since December 2013, but similar deals in the past have done nothing to end the killing, so optimism over this new document is at best “cautious”. Look out for our upcoming analysis.

United Nations: UN Secretary-General António Guterres has nominated Michelle Bachelet to be the organisation’s top human rights official. If approved by the General Assembly, the two-time president of Chile will succeed Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein as High Commissioner for Human Rights. Zeid has been an outspoken critic of powerful countries, and chose not seek a second four-year term, saying last December that doing so “might involve bending a knee in supplication”.

Yemen: On Thursday morning, a bus carrying children in a Houthi-controlled area in northern Saada province was hit by the Saudi Arabia-led coalition, killing dozens. According to the International Committee of the Red Cross, the official toll is 51 dead, including 40 children, as well as 79 wounded, 56 of whom are children. The coalition said in a statement that the strike was a “legitimate military action” aimed at rocket launchers used to strike Saudi Arabia, and accused the Houthis of using children as soldiers and human shields.

Our weekend read:

Briefing: Another Ebola outbreak, this time in a conflict zone

The Democratic Republic of Congo has more experience than any country when it comes to tackling Ebola. The latest outbreak, announced on 1 August, is its 10th since the virus emerged in the country (near the Ebola River) in 1976. Gabon, Sudan, and Uganda would be next on that list, with three major outbreaks apiece. However, this time around, there’s an added problem: it broke out in North Kivu Province, where dozens of armed groups operate and where decades of conflict have devastated key infrastructure. Hopes are high that the vaccine that may have helped quickly contain the previous outbreak last month in Equateur Province can do the same now. But, as our weekend read spells out, tracing all those who have come into contact with suspected cases in the midst of an active warzone and then vaccinating them in time may not be possible. There are also large population centres nearby, and international borders. As of Friday, the outbreak had claimed 37 lives (nine confirmed as Ebola, 28 still being verified), but it’s worth getting up to speed now in case things get worse from here.

And finally:

KCNA

You can leave your hat on

We don’t strive to be your go-to source for sartorial matters here on the Cheat Sheet (well, sometimes we do), but we couldn’t help but take note of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s slimmed-down wardrobe. Pictures published in state media this week show Kim ditching his usual Mao suit for a loosely buttoned white T-shirt and a breezy hat. Blistering heat waves around the globe have also hit North Korea, which likely has something to do with Kim’s recent fashion choices. But more importantly, humanitarian groups warn the soaring heat is likely to wither crop yields in a country where chronic food insecurity and malnutrition are widespread. And, as we pointed out last month, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization was already projecting a 652,000-tonne cereal shortfall, in part due to low rainfall and soaring temperatures earlier this year. State media have called the heatwave an “unprecedented natural disaster”. The UN’s humanitarian aid chief, Mark Lowcock, recently warned of declining aid funds for North Korea, but such entreaties haven’t been enough for donors to overcome years of misgivings: this year’s UN-wide appeal for North Korea is only 10.8-percent funded – the second-lowest commitment to any emergency.

Ottawa was surprised by Saudi Arabia’s angry reaction to its human rights concerns      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

OTTAWA—Federal officials were caught off guard by Saudi Arabia’s angry response to Ottawa’s social media criticism of the detention of several activists, saying that Canada’s message was little different than what had been conveyed publicly and privately in the past.

The tweets sent by Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland and her department set off a diplomatic firestorm that saw Saudi Arabia’s leaders accuse Canada of “blatant” interference in the kingdom’s affairs and react with a series of retaliatory measures.

Yet Canada has been voicing concerns broadly about human rights in Saudi Arabia and specifically on the case of jailed Saudi blogger Raif Badawi “and our stated concern that it’s inconsistent with their commitment to reform,” a senior official told the Star Friday.

“This is going back months,” said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic.

“It is interesting to see this reaction now, given that this is not necessarily new,” the official said.

For example, at a meeting of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation in Bangladesh in May, Freeland held a bilateral meeting with her Saudi counterpart, foreign minister Adel al-Jubeir, and those topics were part of their discussions then and in a follow-up phone call several weeks later, the official said.

What Canada’s Saudi episode tells us about our world

Trudeau has been talking about the case of Badawi for several years, telling reporters in 2016 for example, that he was concerned and was ensuring that then-foreign affairs minister Stephane Dion was doing everything he could to get him released.

In the Commons, Liberal, Conservative and New Democrat MPs have spoken out about Badawi’s case. In April, Liberal MP Omar Alghabra (Mississauga Centre), parliamentary secretary to the minister of foreign affairs, told MPs the government was raising it “at the highest level.”

That same month, Trudeau spoke with King Salman bin Abdulaziz about the relationship between the two countries, domestic reforms in Saudi Arabia and the “importance of respecting human rights and freedom of speech,” according to a read-out released by the prime minister’s office. Trudeau also expressed his “serious concern” with Badawi’s detention, the read-out said.

The tweets that sparked this week’s diplomatic spat concerned the recent arrests of activists in Saudi Arabia, including Samar Badawi, the sister of Raif. “We urge the Saudi authorities to immediately release them and all other peaceful #humanrights activists,” the foreign affairs department tweeted on Aug. 3.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights had already voiced its own concern with a spokesperson urging Saudi Arabia to “unconditionally release all human rights defenders and activists who have been detained for their peaceful human rights work.”

But two days later, Canada was in Saudi Arabia’s crosshairs in an angry condemnation of Ottawa’s comments. It declared that Dennis Horak, Canada’s ambassador in Riyadh, was persona non grata and put a freeze on future trade and investment between the two countries.

Freeland spoke with al-Jubeir on Tuesday in a long conversation described as “professional” as both officials laid out their respective concerns.

“It’s important from our perspective to be able to engage in dialogue with them and certainly they were very willing to take our call. A dialogue is open,” the Canadian official said.

Freeland used that discussion to “seek clarity” around Saudi concerns and “chart a path forward.” But she also reiterated “quite clearly” Canada’s position “that it can and should speak out about human rights, both in public and in private,” the official said.

The two are expected to speak again though no call has yet been scheduled.

Freeland has also reached out to officials in Germany and Sweden — two other countries that also have had diplomatic tiffs with Saudi Arabia — to hear firsthand about their experience.

Bangladesh Is the Model For Martial Law-Why You Won’t Read It On Reddit      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
By Dave Hodges TheCommonSenseShow.com August 10th, 2018 It is complicated, but it is also simple. Africa is exploding in violence. South African radicals are murdering white farmers. Bangladesh is exploding in violence. The blueprint for marital law is emerging in Bangladesh and predictably, you will not read it in Reddit.
