Eternal Reich: Audio Insurgency 14 – ER 080818 Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
Sven Longshanks steps into Eternal Reich’s shoes for the 14th Audio Insurgency, beginning with a classic from Tour De Force that mixes so many different styles together it defies categorizing.

After that we have Kangz of Blitz with a foray into breakbeat territory, leading smoothly into a lush drum and bass remix by Wolfsschanze.

Xurious is up next and doing what he can to draw attention to the Faith Goldy for Toronto Mayor campaign, with a tune that features all his signature sounds.

Faustkampf kick off the metal section with some funky-ass bass licks, while Blutbanner blend operatic vocals with melodic twin guitars to good effect.

Sunwheel shake the cobwebs away with probably the heaviest track in this week’s selection that paves the way to a classic piece of viking metal from Blackout called aptly enough ‘Viking’.

Brigada Totenkopf have re-imagined one of the best tunes to come out of the second world war and Filbert Applebag has finished adding the final touches to ‘Fight for White Rights’.

White Man’s Burden are a new discovery and just as this was being recorded, they dropped this new tune which has to be their best yet, ‘David Duke is a Hero’.

Dissident II provide this week’s ballad, a really catchy acoustic sing-a-long and Manchester neo-folk band Winterfylleth finish the podcast sat around a campfire with their highly atmospheric ‘Embers’.

PAPA ROACH Has '13 Or 14 Songs Written And Recorded' For 'Bold' Follow-Up To 'Crooked Teeth' Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
PAPA ROACH frontman Jacoby Shaddix spoke to Andy Hall of the Lazer 103.3 radio station about the progress of the songwriting and recording sessions for the band's follow-up to 2017's "Crooked Teeth" album. He said (hear audio below): "Right when we got done with 'Crooked Teeth', writing and recording that record, we were supposed to go out on tour with OF MICE & MEN, but Austin [Carlile], the singer [of OF MICE & MEN], was really sick at the time. And so instead of going out on tour, we were, like, 'Let's just go back in the studio and start writing.' So we started our first sessions for this album we're working on early last year, and then we went and toured on 'Crooked Teeth', and then we came back and jumped in the studio June and July of this year with all fresh ideas. We have, like, 13 or 14 songs written and recorded, and we feel we have a lot of really great material." As for the musical direction of the new PAPA ROACH songs, Jacoby said: "I think 'Crooked Teeth' was kind of, like, 'Here's the reintroduction of who P. ROACH is,' and with this new album that we're working on and writing, it really feels like we're making a pretty bold evolution of the band again. And it's a little frightening in a sense at times — like, 'Oh, man. Are people gonna get it?' But then we still have the core sound of the band on the record as well. There's a few songs that we're challenging our fans, like, 'Hey, are you gonna come down this road with us?' And the material we're writing we just feel is just great — it's so inspiring and just unique and different and rocking and anthemic and passionate. It's, like, undeniable. "I feel like when we wrote the album 'Getting Away With Murder' [2004], it was a pretty bold evolution for the band, especially with a song like 'Scars' at the time for our band," he continued. "Now when you think of 'Scars' and PAPA ROACH, that's like the norm; that's who we are. So I'd say the evolution is comparable to that." PAPA ROACH is continuing to tour in support of "Crooked Teeth", which was released in May 2017 via Eleven Seven Music. The disc was written and recorded in a cramped North Hollywood studio with producers Nicholas "RAS" Furlong and Colin Brittain, with the exception of "Born For Greatness", which saw the band collaborate with writer/producer Jason Evigan (Jason Derulo, Demi Lovato, Zedd, MAROON 5).

Senate candidates take stance on Elizabeth Warren Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
Subtitle:
Diehl: Warren bigger threat than Russia

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren is a bigger threat than Russia, GOP U.S. Senate hopeful Geoff Diehl insisted yesterday, saying his Democratic rival is the one pushing communist notions.

“Russia is not the old Soviet Union,” Diehl said during yesterday’s Boston Herald Radio’s GOP Senate primary debate. “To me, the bigger threat is someone like Elizabeth Warren.”

The debate — the first face-to-face event between the three GOP candidates for Senate — was moderated by Herald columnists Joe Battenfeld and Hillary Chabot. Diehl, a state representative and front-runner in the race, faced former Romney cabinet member Beth Lindstrom and businessman John Kingston.

“Elizabeth Warren is a bigger threat than Russia?” Battenfeld said, pressing Diehl on his statement. Diehl doubled down.

“Elizabeth Warren is a big problem,” Diehl said. “She wants to get our — what you heard her recently on CNBC that she wants to tax us anywhere between 50 percent and 90 percent. She seems to be the new communist regime here in the United States, with the progressive movement to make government so big. Whether it’s taking over health care or free education, all of that coming at a price tag, with health care at $32.6 trillion. That doubles our $34 trillion federal budget.”

Kingston pushed back, saying, “We have to be careful with our false equivalency … the Russians aren’t our friends — they just flat aren’t.”

Diehl then tried to walk back his remarks, saying he was being “facetious” about Warren.

When asked about the comments and others throughout the debate framing Warren as an extremist, the senator’s campaign spokeswoman Gabrielle Farrell told the Herald, “Massachusetts Republicans will decide among themselves who will run for U.S. Senate. Senator Warren is focused on her work fighting for the people of Massachusetts and standing up for working families against powerful corporate interests.”

Meanwhile, Lindstrom came out swinging in the debate, suggesting front-runner Diehl is unelectable in deep-blue Massachusetts because of his full-throated support for Trump.

“You will have a tough time if you are a blind loyalist like Geoff is,” said the centrist Lindstrom, though she said she is ready to vote to re-elect Trump. “He cannot unseat her.”

Diehl shot back that his long-standing support for Trump could benefit Massachusetts citizens by giving the state stronger pull than it would have otherwise.

“That gives me a seat at the table that Massachusetts doesn’t have,” Diehl said.

Massachusetts political strategists say whoever receives the GOP nod in the Sept. 4 primary will have a very difficult time taking on Warren.

“I don’t think any of the Republican candidates have a shot at winning this,” political observer Todd Domke told the Herald.

“This state is so anti-Trump. … That’s what it’ll come down to: are you pro-Trump or anti-Trump? And Trump will help make it that binary of a choice.”

An Interview with Savoy Motel Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

CHIRP volunteer Amelia Hruby met up with Nashville band Savoy Motel in July before their show at the Empty Bottle where they were opening for Royal Headache. Their debut LP/CD will be out October 21st on What's Your Rupture? And you can see them in Chicago opening for the Dandy Warhols on 9/24.

Amelia: Have you guys been to Chicago before?

Jeffrey: It’s our third time. We played here [the Empty Bottle] with the Black Lips and we’ve played at the East Room.

Amelia: Did you enjoy those shows?

Jeffrey: Yeah, it was great. The last time we played here with the Black Lips. It was a sold out show, and it was our Chicago debut and our third or fourth out of town show.

Amelia: How long have you guys been playing together as a band?

Dillon: About two years. We started recording two years ago, and we recorded for six months before we played the first show. We had two records done when we did our first show, but we practiced quite a bit. We wanted to make sure that the live set was its own thing.

Amelia: So, I read that you’ve recorded three records now but haven’t released them. Can you tell me a little bit about that process?

Jeffrey: The third record will be our debut. But honestly no one was interested in the first two.

Jessica: The third album evolved to sound more like we sound live. Because we were all more involved in the making of it. The first two were kind of more … not solo projects, but they were more Jeffrey’s [music].

Dillon: We also spent more time on the third album. Not that we rushed through the first two, but for guitar alone we spent months recording. Jeffrey recorded the records as well. He produced them, and we spent three days on the “Hot Ones” solo. Just on that one part, we spent two or three days, trying to make sure it was the best it can be.

Amelia: And that album will be out ….

Jeffrey: October 21st

Amelia: Will you guys be doing a tour surrounding that album?

Jessica: Yeah, we’ll be back in Chicago in September. We’re opening for the Dandy Warhols on their big tour.

Amelia: So what are you all doing with the rest of your summer?

Dillon: This is our only out of town show until the Dandy Warhols tour.

Mimi: So we’ll be playing Nashville and hanging out.

Amelia: What do you like about Nashville? How do you find the Nashville music scene?

Jessica: Plenty of places to play. There’s a show most nights of the week and people are starting to come there more. In the years past a lot of people would pass up Nashville because there wasn’t really a demand for rock music, but in the last five or six years it’s started to make a comeback, and there’s a really active scene there now. Tons of young kids starting bands and us old folks still rocking it.

Amelia: Last question, so the B-side of the single you put out before your upcoming album is called “Souvenir Shop Rock.” What is one of your favorite things you’ve ever bought at a souvenir shop?

Mimi: Chattering teeth, definitely.

Jessica: I’m thinking a hermit crab and that has to be the best thing I’ve ever bought at a souvenir shop because I’m extremely utilitarian and generally avoid those things.

Dillon: Airbrushed t-shirt or something like that. We used to go to Florida every summer when I was a kid, and I would always get a different one.

Jeffrey: I really liked this wallet/knife combo they used to sell at Opryland. I didn’t actually have one, but my best friend in kindergarten did. My parents wouldn’t let me have a knife yet, but it was also part of a change purse that was made out of fake leather and seemed extremely unsafe. I’d love to see one again, because it barely qualified as a knife or a wallet, but it had the Opryland logo on it and would probably look really cool now. I mean, but what purpose does this serve?

In celebration of International Cat Day and to honor the legacy of zoologist and conservationist Alan Rabinowitz who died August 5, we’re re-publishing a talk he gave at the Museum in 2014. Rabinowitz shares his journey to conserve the jaguar, a species that despite its past resilience, is now on a slide towards extinction. In a story of tenacity and survival, the big cat expert also reveals better strategies for saving other species, and how to save ourselves from immediate and long-term catastrophic changes to our environment. This lecture originally took place on September 17, 2014. Subscribe to the Science@AMNH Podcast on iTunes, Soundcloud, or wherever you get your podcasts.

What's so good?

Emerging UK R&B starlet Hannah Lucia is back with the spellbinding "Strangest Feeling." Eight months on from Lucia's the absorbing "Your Love," Lucia latest tune is another reminder why she's one of the UK's most exciting talents. Combing Lucia's entrancing vocals with vibrant electronic R&B production, "Strangest Feeling" is the ideal soundtrack for getting down and dirty at the club, or chilling at home after the comedown. There's a magnetism about Lucia and the music she's creating and I look forward to her next release.

What's so good?

There's a lot going on with this song that leaves me falling head over heels for it. The intricate percussion The slick guitar work The passionate vocal delivery The melody All of those combine for a pretty solid combination, which leaves Italian trio YOY, accompanied by BIRTHH, delivering one of the more-compelling songs I've heard in the last month.

Jen Awad - Break A Man.

Background - Grab the nearest fire extinguisher cos Jen Awad is about to set your wig alight. This half Egyptian, half Peruvian powerhouse delivers the kneecap melting soul and sass of Etta James combined with an in-your-face swagger reminiscent of Tina Turner. Self taught on vocals, piano, guitar and bass, Jen also pens the lyrics to all of her material.

Jen's ability to deliver cherubic, velvety vocals that effortlessly transition into the radical rumble of a runaway 18 wheeler doing 90 mph on an open highway is a feat in itself to witness live. Backed by an eight member band with a horn section, Jen Awad packs a combination punch that will leave your core ringing in the most delectable manner imaginable. Recently Jen Awad has been selected to play the Broke L.A. Festival, being 1 of 50 acts chosen out of 700 contenders. She has consistently filled her local L.A. venues to maximum capacity and is steadily gaining ground as a widely respected act in the L.A. music scene.

When Jen is not writing and performing her music, she is designing for her self-titled label Jen Awad, as well as the urban men's line also out of Los Angeles called "900". It is not a rare sight to behold her 8 piece band donning metallic bomber jackets Jen designed from the "900" label. A few other clients who wear Jen Awad's fashions are: Kali Uchis, Bebe Rexha, Keyshia Cole, Madame Ghandi, Ivy LevIn, Daya, India Love, Christina Milian, Ashanti, Chanel West Coast, and Crystal Westbrooks.

Jen Awad comments - "Break a Man was originally written about the fragility of men. I like to leave it up to interpretation of the listener and however they identify with the song. The origin of break a man was inspired by an article i read in esquire magazine title "100 ways to build a man". Reading the heartfelt article about men sharing their stories about their dads and those defining moments of what built them to be great men brought me to tears. Having been around so many damaged men i realized it took almost nothing to break a man. the song than progresses and discusses how sometimes a woman has to do what she has to do in order to break out of a toxic relationship even if it means hurting someone to set them selves free. its never the intent to destroy someone going in to a relationship..it just happens" - TWITTER.

With a deep breath or a sigh (I haven't quite figure out which yet) 'Break A Man' rapidly builds into a gorgeous and vital song. The passion simmers and then boils over into a classic full bodied soul masterpiece, the band and backing singers are majestic, and any fragile men had better watch out!

Hey Harriett - Too Fast Too Soon.

Background - Forming in 2017, Hey Harriett is an indie/surf/rock band that has made leaps and bounds in the Adelaide music scene. To the outsider it may seem that Hey Harriett appeared out of nowhere but those closer to the project know that this has been a long time coming for front woman and singer/songwriter Georgy Rochow. Too Fast Too Soon is their latest single. Taking the heartache and uncertainty of young love and wrapping it in indie goodness, Too Fast Too Soon is soaked in positivity and one to get you on the dance floor.

Hey Harriett released their debut single Old Parts in November 2017, just months after they formed, proving the hardworking passionate nature of this band family. Launching the single backyard gig style, saw a humble garden in Bowden full of happy faces dancing in moonlight, drunk off a full day line up of local music.

Following the release of Old Parts, Hey Harriett have been gigging non stop. Winning over audiences in Adelaide and Melbourne this band pulls on your heartstrings whilst getting your body moving to the music. The best way to describe this band is; soaked in positivity, a band full of believers and big thinkers. Hitting the road this year for a few sneaky interstate shows, Hey Harriett is spreading their positive vibe wherever they go. Aspiring towards bigger stages in 2019, this band sits solidly in the indie rock scene.

With budding sound engineers making up the band, they are tackling recording themselves. Self producing, recording and mixing takes a little extra time but the result is a recording that is 100% Hey Harriett from start to finish. With no limits for Hey Harriett, their latest single will be launched in Willunga as Georgy turns another property into a mini festival only this time think open fires, camping village, vintage clothes, and local food and beverages. Proving herself as a band leader and event manager, this band is getting a name for their backyard bonanzas.

Rising through the ranks, Hey Harriett is quickly becoming the word on the town. Led by a fierce woman with her eye on the prize, this band pumps out indie bangers quicker than you can say San Cisco. Less than a year in from their first release, it’s going to be an exciting, wild ride with these folk. FACEBOOK.

'Too Fast Too Soon' is a vibrant indie song that keeps things simple, allowing the upbeat melodic vocals and delightfully tight music to quickly work there way under your skin.

John Hiatt - Cry To Me.

Background - John Hiatt is set to return with The Eclipse Sessions on October 12th, 2018 via New West Records. The 11-track set is the Grammy nominated legend’s first new album in four years. It was produced by Kevin McKendree (Delbert McClinton) and features Hiatt’s longtime drummer Kenneth Blevins and bassist Patrick O’Hearn, as well as Yates McKendree (Kevin’s then 16-year old wunderkind son, who also engineered). Hiatt places The Eclipse Sessions in a lineage alongside two of his greatest works -- 1987’s mainstream breakthrough Bring the Family, which sprung from an impulsive four-day session with an all-star combo led by Ry Cooder, and 2000’s Crossing Muddy Waters, an unplanned and largely unplugged effort that garnered a Grammy Award nomination and also set Hiatt on the rootsier path he’s still pursuing today. “The three albums are very connected in my mind,” Hiatt says. “They all have a vibe to them that was unexpected. I didn’t know where I was going when I started out on any of them. And each one wound up being a pleasant surprise.”

Since the release of Hiatt’s 1974 debut, Hangin’ Around the Observatory, rarely has more than a year or two passed without a new collection hitting the shelves. But after wrapping up a year of touring in support of 2014’s Terms of My Surrender -- the singer-songwriter’s 22nd studio effort overall -- he found himself, for the first time in a long time, unsure of what would come next. “I’ve been lost before,” Hiatt says. “Although usually I have some sort of notion or clue where to go. But this time? I had no sense whatsoever.” He continues, “I wanted to spend more time with my family (which includes his critically acclaimed singer-songwriter daughter Lilly). I was aging, with all that entails or doesn’t entail. Stuff was just happening.”

During this period of transition Hiatt did compose a new song that closes The Eclipse Sessions - a dusty, road-worn meditation titled “Robber’s Highway” with the ominously prophetic lyrics “I had words, chords and strings / now I don’t have any of these things.” Hiatt explains, “I was just thinking in terms of somebody who’s out there hammerin’ away with his music, wondering what it’s all coming to. And maybe the songs just aren’t there anymore…” Fast-forward a few years, however, and it’s clear the songs are still very much there as the 11 tracks presented here demonstrate that the singer-songwriter, now 66-years-old, is only getting better with age, his guitar playing more rugged and rootsy, his words wiser and more wry.

True to its title, Hiatt and his band were hard at work on August 21st, 2017 when a solar eclipse traveled the length of the continental U.S. “I think we recorded three songs that day, and then we took a break to go outside and watch everything happen,” Hiatt says. What he observed amongst his fellow Nashvillians during that moment of totality -- his city was one of a few spots in the U.S. to be plunged into near complete darkness -- did give him pause. “It seemed everything stopped for a minute or two,” he says. “It was like a magical little bit of time, a harmonic convergence or something. Like everybody was on the same page.” NEW WEST RECORDS.

I am always pleased to feature new music from an artist or band that are older than me (something that is becoming increasingly more of a challenge). Anyhow 'Cry To Me' sees John Hiatt demonstrating that he is not without fresh new musical ideas, and with years of experience and a fine gathering of musicians, his music remains engaging, honest and lovable.

Latest Releases from Vocalist Sofia Jernberg Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
By Eyal Hareuveni

Swedish, Ethiopian-born, Oslo-based vocal artist Sofia Jernberg needs no introduction. She calls herself a “maker of things” and she keeps doing a lot of beautiful things with Mats Gustafsson’s Fire! Orchestra, and countless free-improvisations meetings. She also did many interesting things with the Swedish-American Seval, with cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, and the Swedish-Norwegian-French quartet The New Songs. Jernberg continues to make exciting things with Gustafsson’s new group The End, and with the Norwegian experimental Lana Trio.

The End - Svårmod Och Vemod Är Värdesinnen (Rare Noise, 2018) *****

Take two of the wildest baritone sax heavyweights on our planet - Swedish Mats Gustafsson and Norwegian Kjetil Møster (whose resume spans from modern jazz groups as The Core and Trinity, through punk-jazz Ultralyd and Møster! to glam-rockers King Midas and Datarock); add the adventurous, avant-rocker, Deerhoof’s powerhouse drummer Greg Saunier (who enjoys improvising with guitarist Mary Halvorson and trumpeter Stephanie Richards) and throw into the mix Norwegian avant-noise-metal guitarist Anders Hana (from local groups MoHa!, Ultralyd and, Noxagt), who returned to musical activity after a seven-year sabbatical, and you already have enough ingredients for a super-exciting group, one that can reach apocalyptic climaxes in an instant. Still, the secret ingredient of this new group is Jernberg. Her strong presence seals the masculine maelstroms of fiery jazz, art rock, noise and poetic texts with a much needed feminine quality and emotional authority.

This potent dream team recorded its debut album, Svårmod Och Vemod Är Värdesinnen (in Swedish: dark melancholy and sadness are senses to be valued. This gory, suggestive titled is emphasized with the cover art by Edward Jarvis) in January 2018 in Bergen, Norway, after only three performances. Needless to say, the joint forces of Gustafsson and Møster with the baritone guitar of Hana and the propulsive drumming of Saunier promise raw, low-end onslaughts and boundless energy. Jernberg’s delivery - at times capricious, freewheeling wailing and on other times her one-of-a-kind singing-whispering-reciting charge the explosive mix with an urgent, even rebellious message of The End.

The album opens with two short pieces by Gustafsson and Hana. “Svårmod” offers everything you can expect from such group. Hana’s distorted-dirty, chainsaw guitar is in the center, embraced by the intense, baritone attacks of Gustafsson and Møster and the manic drumming of Saunier, while Jernberg screaming over this primordial lava. “Vemod” revolves around Hana’s hypnotic riff, that sound like a twisting West-African rhythmic rhythmic pattern with something catchy from the Captain Beefheart songbook, but already brings Jernberg wordless wailing to the center.

The End’s epic 14-minute “Translated Slaughter” is a completely different story. Jernberg acts, sighs, whispers and chants Gustafsson’s tortured-claustrophobic, stream-of-consciousness lyrics while Gustafsson and Møster are busy adding noisy, disturbing electronics. Hana deepens the dark atmosphere with assorted effects and Saunier keeps shaking this swampy ground with sudden attacks. Eventually, this pieces closes with a cathartic crescendo. Gustafsson’s “Don’t Wait” has a clearer - obvious - message (“...curiosity is the key, sharing is the key, don’t believe fuckin’ nothin’...”), and a familiar rhythmic structure, bringing to mind The Thing collaboration with vocalist Neneh Cherry (The Cherry Thing, Smalltown Supersound, 2012). The Jernberg thing offers her reciting-chanting the intuitive lyrics as half beat poet-half charismatic shaman, flirting majestically with the addictive, polyrhythmic pulse.

Møster’s brief interlude “Rich and Poor” serves as an introduction to his song “Both Sides Out”, a kind of requiem to post-Trump America that can be experienced psychoanalytic attempt to release the many demons from this tyrant’s deranged psyche. Jernberg continues to perform her shamanic duties, this time as an equal partner of The End’s brutal and terrifying cleansing ritual.

Only 44 minutes long but, no doubt, the best ones that you will spend in 2018.

Lana Trio with Sofia Jernberg (Clean Feed, 2018) ****

The experimental Norwegian Lana Trio - trombonist Henrik Munkeby Nørstebø, pianist Kjetil Jerve, and drummer Andreas Wildhagen, was formed in 2007. The trio managed to solidify in its first two albums a delicate balance between its intense, powerful interplay, an uncompromising search for new sounds and dynamics and a strong affinity for open-ended, non-idiomatic improvisations. Jernberg joined the trio for its third album, recorded on March 2016 in Halden, Norway, and performs now again with the trio after the release of the album.

Jernberg sounds as if she has been free-improvising with Lana Trio for ages. She fits organically in the wild yet loose chaos that Lana Trio keeps producing. But her operatic-eccentric delivery charges the focused interplay of the trio with an engaging, emotional depth/ Jernberg vocalizes wordless, seductive suggestions and uses her voice as an intriguing, subversive instrument.

Jernberg connection with Munkeby Nørstebø - who works with another experimental vocal artist, Audrey Chen, in the Beam Splitter - is almost telepathic. Both sound as have perfected their own imaginative, cryptic language. Wildhagen embraces these secretive talks with sudden, rhythmic eruptions while Jerve frames all with minimalist, percussive piano playing.

Each of the four free-improvised pieces focuses on a distinct strategy. The first one, “Ears Anciens”, is restless and urgent; the second, “Omnivore's Aperitif”, is enigmatic, sparse and surprisingly quiet; the third, “Ghost Training”, explodes with fiery flow of volcanic energy ; the fourth, “Solitude Chant”, concludes this wild ride with a mysterious, tempting ritual.

Over the past months, the strategic results of the primarily economic Belt and Road Initiative have begun to demonstrate for the world what Lyndon LaRouche has known for many years — there is no distinction between the economic and the strategic issues facing mankind. If you want peace, LaRouche said, get the tractors rolling.

When Presidents Trump, Xi Jinping, Putin, and Moon — all four — presented development plans to North Korea, backing each other up on the concept of "peace through development" as well as on sanctions, the supposedly impossible proved possible indeed. When India and Pakistan both joined the SCO, working directly with China and Russia on joint development ideas, the "permanent crisis" created by the British at the time of the partition of India became suddenly resolvable. On the Horn of Africa, with China's Belt and Road proposing a development alternative to each of the three nations of Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia, an intractable conflict has turned into joyful peace and cooperation. In Southwest Asia, a similar solution to the century of war is now possible.

This process is active across Africa. The BRICS Summit in South Africa last month saw Russia, China and India joining hands with all the people of Africa in bringing real development — nuclear power, high-speed rail connectivity, water projects to green the deserts — and thus posing a real solution to terrorism and to poverty.

The problem remains, however, that the media in the U.S. and in Europe have carefully isolated their populations from any knowledge of this world-historic transformation, which is sweeping through Asia, Africa and Ibero-America. In the U.S., the LaRouche movement is mobilizing to resolve this problem. A first step is a call for transforming the negotiations between President Trump and President-elect López Obrador of Mexico, from a revision of NAFTA to the higher-ordered concept of NABRI — the North American Belt and Road Initiative. This must become a step forward in uniting the U.S. and China through the New Silk Road, a process of building advanced industrial nations throughout the Americas and beyond, and fulfilling Trump's commitment to restoring America's former industrial power as a primary source of capital exports for nation-building. This, not coincidentally, is the path to resolving the trade imbalance.

But the British and their assets in the U.S. will stop at nothing to prevent such a new paradigm from taking hold in the U.S. The Council on Foreign Relations, the foremost voice for the Empire within the U.S., has published a report entitled, "Is Made in China 2025 a Threat to Global Trade?" It details the supposedly devious intentions of the Chinese effort to develop their domestic expertise in high-tech manufacturing: through "recruitment of foreign scientists, its theft of U.S. intellectual property, and its targeted acquisitions of U.S. firms," the CFR claims, China intends to "control entire supply chains," and eventually "entire industries could come under control of a rival geopolitical power."

Such hysteria is matched by the emergence this week of "Big Brother" frantically shutting down access to social media for multiple voices which have countered the Russiagate madness, and supported President Trump's denunciation of the "Russia hoax." Alex Jones' Infowars was thrown off Facebook and YouTube — a site which has more than 15 million visits per month— while others were thrown off Twitter.

But the New Paradigm exists — it cannot be stopped, other than by world war. China has arisen, and has joined with Russia and India through the BRICS to offer the nations of the Global South an alternative to the poverty imposed upon them as a legacy of colonialism. They have extended this offer, to join the Belt and Road Initiative, to the United States and Europe, as a win-win alternative to the geopolitics of war, economic decay and cultural decadence infecting the West. The patriotic spirit in the U.S. has been awakened through the phenomenon of Donald Trump, rejecting the warmongers and the post-industrial society advocates within both the Republican and Democratic Parties — what LaRouche long ago denounced as the "two-potty system." LaRouche's Four Laws, implemented through the "four powers" of the U.S., Russia, China and India, provide the way forward. The arc of history has reached a branching point, towards either victory or tragedy. The future is in our hands, each and every one.

Festival of Football to put Cork clubs in spotlight Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
StMarys.jpg

There is rich history spread out across the Rebel County and a lot of that is stored within the football clubs that serve their local communities. Stories, characters, memories and adventures have all helped to form the identity of a club, but it is the volunteers who continue to maintain those traditions and shape a brighter future.

That is why FAI CEO John Delaney came up with the concept of a week-long Festival of Football that would visit a different county each summer ahead of the Annual General Meeting. The premise was simple: let's recognise the work that grassroots clubs are doing on a daily basis.

Now in its 12th year, the Festival of Football is bigger and better than ever before. And there is an excitement filling the air amongst the grassroots clubs in Cork as the FAI delegation, which will include current and former Republic of Ireland internationals and current managers, gets ready to visit over 40 clubs.

Trevor Welch got out in front however. The veteran broadcaster brought his Hard Knocks Sports microphone with him to visit four clubs - Carrigaline United, Avondale United, St Mary's AFC, and Leeds AFC - and discover their stories.

PODCAST: Horror story of 796 babies found in Tuam mass grave unraveled Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

796 children’s bodies were found in a mass grave. BBC podcast, "The Home Babies" focuses on St. Mary’s mother-and-baby home in Tuam, Galway and the appalling tale of abuse and criminality uncovered by amateur historian Catherine Corless.

“I’m awfully afraid of people saying, ‘oh she’s in it for the glory’… people do say that sort of thing.”

Catherine Corless is in her sixties, she is slight and quietly spoken, and is looking anxiously at her husband Aidan. We’re in her dining room at her home in Tuam, in the west of Ireland.

“They don’t,” Aidan suddenly says, almost shouting, “They don’t, it’s you…it’s totally in your head and it’s to the point of annoyance.”

Read more: Fight for forensic excavation on 796 Tuam Babies mass grave

Catherine then smiles slightly and I laugh, obviously, this is a common refrain from Catherine and his response equally repetitive.

Catherine Corless standing infront of the plot where 796 babies were buried in a mass grave.

For most of her life, Catherine has lead a rather reclusive life, she would rather be walking with her dog in the fields behind their home than be around people, any day. She doesn’t drink, isn’t religious in the traditional sort of a way, loves nature and avoids attention.

But she found herself at the epicenter, at the very heart of a controversial story. It has caused a storm, not only in her hometown but also across Ireland and the world. She’s appeared on live TV chat shows, received standing ovations, been interview by the international media, and won several awards for her work. One commentator called her an inspiration to women around the world, and she is becoming a national heroine. And it’s all down to her own work, which is so important to her that she is prepared to suffer the public gaze.

I suppose that is why she is worried that people think she’s out for glory.

But the truth of it is this. A few years back she set out to write an essay for a local journal about the Tuam Mother and Baby home. She is an avid local history buff and since her children had all grown up, she had a bit of time to indulge in her in hobbies.

She also remembered the children, the Home Babies some people called them, who were born in the home; their mothers, unmarried and pregnant, were plucked from society and hidden behind the high walls to give birth.

Children living at the Tuam mother and baby home.

They were the “fallen women” and their children, “the spawn of the devil.” They were shunned by the church and the state and often by their own communities and families.

Catherine was surprised to find that little had been written about the Home, so she had to start her research from scratch. One piece of information led to another, slowly, week after week, month after month, she became gripped by the sense of injustice. What she finally uncovered shocked the town, Ireland and the world, and prompted the Irish government to begin an inquiry into the Mother and Baby Homes.

This is a story, about a town haunted by the past, that many people knew about but no one spoke about, it’s about the power of the state and the church, and of Ireland’s dark history.

Above all, though, it’s the story about Catherine, and her mission to uncover this truth and, in the end, maybe change the course of Irish history

Nicaragua’s failed coup Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

While the international pressure continues, by mid-July it became clear that, for the time being at least, the opposition in Nicaragua no longer has sufficient local support to achieve its goal. Español

For three months Daniel Ortega and his government in Nicaragua were under intense pressure to resign – from protesters and opposition groups, from local media and from right-wing politicians in the US. But by mid-July it became clear that, despite persistent images of near-collapse painted by the international press, the country appears to be returning to something close to normality. How did a protest that seemed so strong when it began, lose momentum so quickly?

Daniel Ortega has been in power since 2007, in the last election won 72% of the vote and until recently was running high in independent opinion polls. Despite this, a casual reader of the national and international media would get the impression that he’s deeply despised.

In Open Democracy, the international protest group SOS Nicaragua calls him a “tyrant hell-bent on the bloody repression of the nation.” His local detractors agree. For example, on July 10 Vilma Núñez, a longstanding opponent of Ortega’s who was originally his ally, told the BBC that he is rolling out an “extermination plan” for Nicaragua.

When rebels briefly held one of Nicaragua’s cities a few weeks ago, their leaders said they had ended “eleven years of repression”. SOS Nicaragua even claims that Ortega is a “more hated and more long-lived tyrant than Nicaragua’s former dictator” (Anastasio Somoza and his family, who ruled Nicaragua ruthlessly for more than 40 years).

A casual glance at social media will show that plenty of people share these views, and at the peak of the opposition’s popularity they clearly had considerable traction. But the opposition’s first mistake might have been its overblown rhetoric, as people began to question whether it squared with their own perceptions.

For example, until April this year, Nicaragua was the second safest country in Latin America despite also being one of the poorest. Its police were renowned for their community-based methods in which (unlike in the “northern triangle” countries of Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala) killings by police officers were a rarity. Drugs-related crime was at a minimum and the violent gangs found in neighbouring countries didn’t exist.

Of course the police weren’t perfect, but people could safely report problems such as domestic violence without expecting a violent response from police themselves. Yet the same police are now labelled “assassins” by the opposition and blamed for the majority of the deaths since the protests started.

No one has questioned how a force with a record of limited violence was transformed overnight into ruthless murderers, supposedly capable of torture and even of killing children.

That there have been violent deaths in the past three months is not in doubt. Bloomberg repeated the claim from local human rights groups that 448 had died by the end of July. However, a detailed analysis of those reported in the first two months of the crisis showed how the numbers were being manipulated. By then nearly 300 deaths had been recorded by the two main human rights organisations or by the Inter-American Human Rights Commission.

A claim made right from the beginning by the protesters was that they were either unarmed or at best had only homemade weapons to protect themselves. Again, the international media were convinced. But local people could see otherwise.

A case-by-case analysis showed that of those listed only about 120 were definitely attributable to the protests, with many unrelated to the events or having unclear causes, or involved bystanders or resulted from double-counting. Of course, the exaggerated picture is still held in many people’s minds (only the other day someone told my wife that “hundreds of students have been killed”), but many others have gradually realised that no massacre has in fact occurred.

In an important respect the opposition succeeded. They created what The Guardian calls “a widespread and growing consensus within the international community that Nicaragua’s government is in fact largely responsible for the bloodshed.” While human rights NGOs repeat the message that the police and security forces (in Amnesty International’s words) “shoot to kill”, the people themselves mostly know otherwise. Whatever the provenance of the deaths in the April protests, recent victims have often been government supporters or the police themselves.

In an analytic interview, Nils McCune explained to journalist Max Blumenthal how the opposition violence grew and Sandinistas were persecuted. Examples include a little reported incident on July 12, in which opposition gunmen killed four police and a schoolteacher in the small town of Morrito, kidnapping nine others.

On July 15, protesters captured a policeman from Jinotepe while he was on his way home, tortured him and burnt his body. Of the deaths verified in the analysis above, about half are of government officials, police or Sandinista supporters. On August 4 there was a massive march in Managua of government supporters calling for justice for these deaths, which are little reported internationally.

A claim made right from the beginning by the protesters was that they were either unarmed or at best had only homemade weapons to protect themselves. Again, the international media were convinced. But local people could see otherwise. The dangerous homemade mortars were soon being supplemented by more serious weapons. In the places where the protesters rested control of the streets, AK47s and other arms were being carried openly.

This was not surprising, as what started as mainly a student protest quickly changed to one in which trouble-makers were recruited from outside. There were reports from various cities of youths being paid to man the barricades; in some cases, more serious criminals became involved.

One of the student leaders of the protest, Harley Morales, admitted on June 10 that they had lost touch with what was happening on the streets. It was increasingly clear to local people that the coup attempt was leading to danger and insecurity of a kind they hadn’t experienced for years.

An initially successful element of the opposition’s campaign was building road blocks (“tranques”) on city streets and on the country’s half-dozen main highways. At one point the country was effectively paralysed and the government was forced to demand the lifting of the tranques before it would continue with the “national dialogue” aimed at resolving the crisis (hosted by Catholic bishops and involving both opposition and government supporters).

If the opposition had been sensible, it would have taken the government at its word, lifted the blockades and insisted that the dialogue proceed at pace. But either it was hooked on the power that the blockades had given it, or it couldn’t control those who were manning them. As well as simply being intimidating for local people to cross and very disruptive for local businesses, by this stage the tranques were the main focus of violence.

They quickly turned from being an opposition asset to being the main reason why people wanted a quick return to “normality” (a plea frequently heard in the streets). In the space of only a week or two, the opposition lost perhaps the best chance it had to influence the outcome of the crisis. When police and paramilitaries finally moved in to clear the tranques, people were out celebrating in Leon, Carazo and Masaya.

Another area in which the opposition wasted its initial gains was in use of social media. The starting point for the crisis was a forest fire in one of the country’s remote reserves. The opposition accused the government of ignoring the fire and turning down offers of help to fight it. By the time these were shown to be false, attention had moved on to a much more inflammatory issue, reforms to the social security system.

The strength and pace of the protests were fuelled by a stream of real and fake news, principally via Facebook. Of course government supporters were doing the same, but the opposition proved far more effective.

Again, there were distorted messages both about the reforms themselves and the subsequent protests. In perhaps the first example of mass manipulation of social media in Nicaragua since smartphones became widely available a couple of years ago, the strength and pace of the protests were fuelled by a stream of real and fake news, principally via Facebook. Of course government supporters were doing the same, but the opposition proved far more effective.

Any death was of a protester. Scenes were staged of tearful students uttering their “last messages” while under fire or people “confessing” to doing the government’s dirty work. While manipulation by the government side was more obvious and less sophisticated, many people became sceptical about what they saw on their phones and began to place more trust in their own experiences.

As the opposition became more desperate, social media took a turn for the worse, with instructions to track down and kill government “toads” (“zapos”), leading to the victimising and even torturing of government workers and supporters. The intolerance has spread to the US and Europe, with SOS Nicaragua members shouting down anyone speaking about Nicaragua who does not support their line (as happened in early August in San Francisco).

Yet another opposition tactic that misfired was in calling strikes. That these came about was due to big business, which for long was happy to live with the Ortega government but was called to action by the US ambassador in March, when she told them they needed to get involved in politics. From day one they supported the opposition, even at the cost of their own businesses.

But Nicaragua is unique in Latin America in having only modest reliance on big firms. Thanks both to the nature of its economy and support from the Ortega government, small businesses, artesan workshops, co-ops and small farmers have grown in number.

What’s known as the “popular economy” contributes 64% of national income, far higher than is the case with Nicaragua’s neighbours. As well as being strangled by the tranques, small businesses couldn’t cope with strikes. Some observed them (perhaps under threat) but many did not, and the opposition lost other potential allies.

The protest marches, tranques and strikes were all aimed at putting pressure on the government, with the (televised) national dialogue as the public platform. Here, the opposition not only missed its best chance to secure reforms but its attacks misfired in other ways. It had only one argument, repeatedly put forward, that the government was responsible for all the deaths that were happening and must resign forthwith.

In other words, it didn’t really want dialogue at all. A belligerence that found approval among its hard-core supporters was simply off-putting to the majority of people who desperately wanted a negotiated outcome that would end the violence. The national dialogue now receives little attention, in part because the government has regained control of the streets but also because it is obvious that the opposition were using it only to insult and criticise, with no real intention of engaging properly.

Furthermore, instead of the Catholic church staying to one side as mediators, their priests have again and again been found to support the protests, so their role as neutral actors in the dialogue is no longer credible, if it ever was.

By aligning itself with the right wing of the US Republican party through its well-publicised trips to Washington and Miami, and its acceptance of US government finance, the opposition points to a change of political direction for Nicaragua which would be anathema to most Sandinistas and even to many of its own supporters.

By having to speak publicly in the dialogue, the opposition has also exposed other weaknesses. While it is united in wanting Ortega to go, it is divided on tactics and even more fundamentally in its politics. Whatever one thinks of the Ortega government, it can be seen to have taken the country in a certain direction and to have accumulated many social achievements during its eleven years in power.

What would happen to these? Even on the issue that ostensibly began the protests, the national social security fund, the opposition offers no clear alternative. Worse, by aligning itself with the right wing of the US Republican party through its well-publicised trips to Washington and Miami, and its acceptance of US government finance (detailed by the Grayzone Project), the opposition points to a change of political direction for Nicaragua which would be anathema to most Sandinistas and even to many of its own supporters.

There is a paradox here, because a tactic which backfired in Nicaragua may yet serve the opposition’s cause internationally and damage both Nicaragua and the Ortega government in a different way. While for the Trump administration Nicaragua is hardly a priority, there is long-running resentment about the success of Sandinista governments within the US establishment, awoken by the recent protests.

The same establishment also sees an opportunity to attack an ally of Venezuela’s. It has been working hard in bodies like the Organisation of American States, aided by its new allies in the region, to restrict Nicaragua’s support to the small number of Latin American countries that refuse to play the US game. While the OAS/OEA can take few concrete steps itself, it is contributing to an image of Nicaragua among US lawmakers that may allow sanctions to be imposed that could be very damaging to its economy and hence to its people.

As a result of all the opposition’s mistakes, and of the government’s concerted action to regain control, Nicaragua’s real situation has shifted markedly in the few weeks since mid-July. But international commentators are failing to keep up. The New York Times, Huffington Post, Guardian and other media continue to talk about the tyranny, or the mounting political violence, or (in the case of Huffpost) even the rise of fascism in Nicaragua.

In Open Democracy, José Zepeda claims that “the majority of the Nicaraguan people have turned their backs on [Ortega]”. In Canada, the Ottawa Citizen talked about Nicaragua imploding. But most of these correspondents are not in the country. In practice the violence has slowed almost to a halt, Nicaraguan cities are clear of barricades and normal life is being resumed. The prevailing feeling is one of relief, and better-informed commentators have begun to conclude that the attempted coup has failed.

Of course there are enormous challenges, and huge potential pitfalls for a government now having to repair the country’s infrastructure with reduced tax revenues, scarce international investment and near-zero tourism, as well as facing open hostility from its neighbours and possible economic sanctions by the United States. But in terms of the strength of its core support among Nicaraguan people, Daniel Ortega’s government may even be stronger now than it was before the crisis began.

Premiere: Bondax ft Andreya Triana - 'Real Thing' (Fono Remix) Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
Bondax
It's a fiery, up-beat re-working...

Manchester production duo Bondax have always been drawn to soul.

Maybe it's their knowledge of prime house and UKG, but there's something about a soulful vocal that resonates with their vocal.

Linking with Andreya Triana recently, the always majestic vocalist gently nudged their music in a fresh direction, displaying slightly different colours and hues.

Part of the sessions around debut album 'Revolve', the producers sought out inspiration from hip-hop, jazz, Latin and African rhythms, neo-soul and disco.

New single 'Real Thing' is a potent opening statement. Lush production with an up-beat feel, Andreya's mighty vocal pushes them to the next level.

Preparing two very different remixes of the single, Bondax recently handed Clash an exclusive re-working from Fono.

Revving up the tempo a little, there are shades of garage in those snapping snares, the up-front rhythm locating a different tone in Andreya's voice.

A fiery summer smash, you can check it out below and then check out a short Q&A with Bondax after the jump.

How did ‘Real Thing’ come about?

We finished this track last year, it evolved through many different versions to become what it sounds like today! It started as a more electronic modern disco thing and developed into more of a throwback soul track and an ode to late 70s philly disco. Andreya Triana just came in and downright smashed the vocal. Was an absolute pleasure to work with her, we’ve been fans since we were 15/16!

How representative is this track of the album as a whole?

We think it hopefully demonstrates a development from our previous work, incorporating more live elements and new production techniques we’ve learned that spread across the record. The album is quite eclectic so we hope people will be happily surprised when they hear the rest!

When making the album did you want a lot of breadth, or to find some form of focus? Do you think you can achieve both?

That’s an interesting question, we definitely tried to harness both whilst making this record. There was a month last year where we moved all our equipment up to an AirBNB in Silverdale (near our childhood homes) and that was a very focused time. We finished the writing and production for the record that month, however we took around three/four months recording the finishes touches and mixing the record. So I guess it is possible to achieve both!

It's taken around two years to make the album, has the project evolved alongside the album process?

We like to think our horizons have expanded with this record. It’s definitely something new for us and we’ve learned a lot about making new styles of music, recording/production techniques etc. Hopefully, we can take what we’ve learned making this record and continue to progress our sound and keep learning how to make better music.

What does the rest of 2018 hold for you?

Obviously, the record coming out is the biggest thing for us this year. It’s our debut studio album and as you’ve mentioned, it’s taken a long time! We plan to tour as much as we can to promote the record whilst writing more new music as much as we can.

Art Brut Are Back, And Their New Song Is Glorious Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
Art Brut
Check out 'Wham! Bang! Pow! Let's Rock Out!' now...

Art Brut have shared their first new single in seven years - listen to it now.

The band's acerbic post-punk squall made for strange bedfellows with the indie landfill, and their detached, witty stance made for one of the era's most potent, misunderstood voices.

Frontman Eddie Argos emerged last year, penning a few potent articles on those heady years, while promising further chapters in the Art Brut story.

Well, now it begins. The band have signed to the fine fellows at Alcopop! Records, and their new single 'Wham! Bang! Pow! Let's Rock Out!' is online now.

Commenting on the new material, frontman Eddie Argos said: "Watch the fuck out! We're back and very rejuvenated. I wanted to call the last album Wham! Bang! Pow! Lets Rock Out! but in the end it didn't really sound like a Wham! Bang! Pow! Record!, more like Brilliant! Tragic! but that means this idea has been rattling around my head for seven years. Seven Years!"

"Art Brut make Wham! Bang! Pow! music. This song is about making friends. Art Brut are coming to your party whether you want us to or not. We didn’t want to go home yet, there were still quite a few people we hadn't met. See you soon."

What does it sound like? Prime Art Brut - hilariously cutting lyrics, biting guitar lines, and a delivery that could only come from Eddie Argos.

Tune in now.

Colin Cowherd puts Penn State in College Football Playoff; Jahan Dotson generates buzz, and more Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

Today's Penn State football news headlines feature a College Football Playoff prediction and an encouraging start for freshman wide receiver Jahan Dotson.

Today's Penn State football news headlines feature a College Football Playoff pick and an encouraging start for freshman wide receiver Jahan Dotson.

FOX Sports personality Colin Cowherd hasn't always had glowing comments about Penn State -- see: Christian Hackenberg and Saquon Barkley -- but he is bullish on the Lions in 2018. He and colleague Joel Klatt went back and forth about Penn State, and Cowherd landed on a prediction that the Lions would join Alabama, Clemson and Washington in the College Football Playoff.

At his Wednesday evening media availability, coach James Franklin called Dotson "a very natural, fluid guy" and said he has been the buzz of camp, writes Mark Wogenrich for the Allentown Morning Call. The Lions are loaded at wide receiver, but Dotson is well on his way to proving his chops as a slot wideout.

In other Penn State football news, the Lions are finding answers at key positions. Solutions at tight end are coming into focus, and Kevin Givens fits right in.

PennLive's Bob Flounders, Greg Pickel and Dustin Hockensmith also talk Penn State football on the Keystone Sports Network. Check out audio from their latest podcast below.

Purple Fox Dishes Out a Buffet of Love Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
Jimmy Buffett only sang one overt children's song – "Caribbean Amphibian" for a Sesame Street special. Yet it lives in perpetuity on Kids Place Live, YouTube, and a host of other online venues. But if you enjoyed the gentle island feel of that tune, and wished, "What would a full album sound like," I've got the answer for you. The mega-named Purple Fox and the Heebie Jeebies and their second CD, THE SOMETHING OF LOVE.

Part jam band, part educational experience, and 24x7 fun, Purple Fox and company was imagined into reality by Josh Friedman in late 2014 in Silicon Valley. And you thought only software and sitcoms came from that region. THE SOMETHING OF LOVE is a theme album, with the title track harkening back to Fishbone's epic "Everyday Sunshine."

Other tracks amplify the central theme, with "We Got It (Our Time Together)," "Forever Everyday," "You're Welcome (In My House)," and the Jamaican-influenced "Please (I Don't Want to Harsh Your Mellow)":

Please, when you know what you want but you don't know what to say
Please, when you know what you need and you need it right away
Please, it's a magic word that just can't be replaced
Please, please

In my estimation, Purple Fox and the Heebie Jeebies will start some slow dancing gyrations with THE SOMETHING OF LOVE. It's an infectious combination of warm-hearted vocals and zydeco with biscuits. Friedman and his congregation invite your family to celebrate the fusing of family, friends, and good funk.

THE SOMETHING OF LOVE is available from Purple Fox and the Heebie Jeebies website, Amazon, Apple Music, CDBABY, and Soundcloud.

Here is the video for the band's song, "S'alright":

Jaguar: An Indomitable Beast with Alan Rabinowitz Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
This is a short excerpt from a 1998 interview with Harriet Love. She is a Charlotte, North Carolina native, and graduated from West Charlotte, an all-black high school, in 1962. She raised her children in the same area, and they attended the same high school after it was integrated. Love is asked about the motivations people had for supporting integration, and she starts off with an insightful response. She then goes on to describe many more subtle effects of integration.

Michal Menert and the Pretty Fantastics Groove from the Depths on "From the Sea" (premiere) Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

Michal Menert has done as much as anyone to shape the path of electronic music in Colorado. As a founding member of Pretty Lights, as a solo artist, and as a collaborator, Menert has been one of the biggest influences on the Colorado scene for the best part of a decade. In 2015 he joined together with the Pretty Fantastics and released the superb 1 album. New single "From the Sea" is the first taster from their second album which drops sometime in November.

On "From the Sea", Menert and the band quickly tap into a deep groove that emerges like a turbulent riptide swelling just below the surface of the sea. Featuring bobbing organ chords, gliding sax, and a loose-limbed, dexterous bass line all topped off with a simple piano hook, the band just about keep the song tethered to the shore. The interplay between each member of the group is phenomenal as they quickly tap into each other's musical flow like tributaries running into a single rushing river.

At the midpoint, the song changes direction completely as it blissfully drifts out to sea as fluttering guitar notes float away as if taken by the retreating tide and organ and bass notes warp and bend appearing to sink back beneath the surf. The clear separation between the two parts of the song is deliberately reflective of the strong musical narrative that runs through it, as Menert explains:

"'The song begins by reflecting the violent nature of the lost coast's currents, pulling mountains into the sea. The journey of the song implies life wearing sanity down until at last, you accept the insanity of your present reality. It stays teetering on the edge we all walk, heading back into the tranquility of the roaring waves that spawned us."

Michal Menert and the Pretty Fantastics play a joint show with Pretty lights at the world famous Red Rocks on Friday night, 10 August.

Magic City Hippies Take Stock of the Past with "GunSlingers" (premiere) Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

Magic City Hippies have a wild history, dating back to the days when vocalist Robby Hunter busked on the streets of Miami and took his one-man band show to a variety of parties. When the police told him he had to quit the streets, he quickly collected drummer Pat Howard and guitarist John Coughlin and began gigging for free beer and as much applause as the audience could muster. Initially called the Robby Hunter Band, the trio ultimately released its debut set in 2013. Titling the platter Magic City Hippies, the group soon jettisoned its original moniker and later recorded the 2015 EP, Hippie Castle, which ultimately placed on Spotify's Global Viral Top 50, eventually accumulating over 10 million streams.

A string of singles followed, including the latest, "GunSlingers". Landing at the intersection of the deep past and several moments into the future, the track is soulful, funky and emotionally engaging.

Hunter says that the song had some basis in circumstances surrounding the band. "It addresses and then dismisses the fear of coming up short after a lifetime of chasing down your dreams," he observes. "These are the first lyrics that I wrote after we released our first full length together as Robby Hunter Band and began this five-year journey from Florida dive bars too, eventually, national tours and major festivals. This song sat on the shelf that whole time, gathering all this new meaning and relevance for the three of us. 'I won't stop 'till they say my name' is this kind of chest-beating affirmation that we're not stepping off this ride anytime soon."

Coughlin adds, "Of all our current songs this one started the earliest, way back in 2013 before even anything off our last EP. It's really fitting how it's got this vibe like it reminds you of something. Because it's lived with us so long, I get almost nostalgic thinking about how much the song and we've progressed over those five years."

Howard, who also serves as producer, notes that there is something nostalgic in the production as well. "To me, there's something both haunting and soothing about dusty, living-room organ sounds and analog drum machines," he offers. "Almost like the 1960s version of futuristic. We produced this one with a mix of retro-futuristic sounds like that, live instruments, and even some trunk 808s snuck in there. It helps the song feel unstuck in time, kind of like the lyrical perspective."

Alternative R&B Artist R.LUM.R Impresses on Two New Tracks Ahead of Tour (premiere) Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

None

Having just performed a thrilling set at Lollapalooza, alternative R&B artist R.LUM.R is releasing two new tracks of neo-soul delight, "Right Here" and "I Need to Know". "Right Here" is a forwarding-looking number musically with the spareness of arrangement featuring in the alternative realms of R&B these days. Delicate beats that wouldn't feel out of place on an IDM record married to a killer hook and R.LUM.R's gorgeous vocals all add up to an instantly memorable song that feels organic. The song speaks to wanting to be that better person and being happy with love, as in "all I really need is love, and I got it right here". Meanwhile, "I Need to Know" is a slower number looking at relationship foibles and emotional honesty.

"These songs were inspired by my own struggles with anxiety and depression and the confusion it causes inside myself and in context of other people. I was hoping to create a sonic environment where you're safe to feel something honestly. Between Lophiile, who produced 'Right Here,' and the Gifted (who produced 'I Need to Know') both of these tunes were each basically done in the same afternoon they were started, so I guess they were things I really needed to get out," says R.LUM.R.

These new tracks will release on 10 August via PRMD Music.

R.LUM.R will be touring the US in November and December (dates below), and it's the perfect chance to catch this on-the-rise artist whose warm and honest music will undoubtedly be a balm around the time that cold weather arrives and the mid-term elections are upon us.

Jesse Denaro Pleads For Love on "Fire" (premiere) Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

Pittsburgh-based singer-songwriter Jesse Denaro's upcoming LP finds the artist letting down his guard and getting to the business of making music that he connects with deeply. His new single, "Fire", exemplifies his current state of mind, finding resolve in a moment of darkness, finding hope for things that have not yet arrived.

Naïve? Probably so but all the more delightful for it. Denaro's effortless singing and heartfelt lyrics capture the listener immediately. From there the song evolves into unexpected musical corners, maintaining its emotional integrity while gliding effortlessly into the new terrain.

Speaking about the song Denaro says, "I'm a hopeless romantic, and I wanted to write a love song even though I had just gone through a horrible break-up. I was living on my friend's couch and writing music which was about all I could do at the time, so the words came from that place of sadness." He adds that the song had a different initial shape. I wrote it for the guitar, and the whole song was originally full-blown and energetic," he notes. "But the first time we performed it at a club, I played it wrong, and it ended up staying that way."

He continues, "It's my little therapeutic love song that pulled me out of a funk. I hope it's associated with a great moment in someone's life, like the song the guy plays in the car on his first date when he realizes she's the one, she's the love of his life. That's what I want it to be."

Over the past few years, both SLANDER & Crankdat have been churning out some of the heaviest tunes in bass music. From SLANDER’s recent collabs with Juliana Chahayed & WAVEDASH to Crankdat continuously dropping impressive remixes of artists like Famous Dex x A$AP Rocky & Zeds Dead, today we’re excited to find that the three have teamed up with UK metal band Asking Alexandria on a heavy new track - “Kneel Before Me”.

SLANDER & Crankdat have created a monster with this latest offering. With SLANDER having brought out their metal influences in the past on tracks like “Welcome To The Fire” & “Dead”, this collab with Asking Alexandria makes perfect sense, but by adding Crankdat to the mix we’re hearing a completely new sound emerge. Filled with dark, ominous soundscapes, deep, abrasive wobbles, powerful percussion plus some crunchy guitar and gritty vocals from Asking Alexandria, you can fully expect this one to incite a mosh pit at your next fest. Joshua Mattson's Playlist for His Novel "A Short Film About Disappointment" Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
A Short Film About Disappointment#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book.

Previous contributors include Jesmyn Ward, Lauren Groff, Bret Easton Ellis, Celeste Ng, T.C. Boyle, Dana Spiotta, Amy Bloom, Aimee Bender, Heidi Julavits, Hari Kunzru, and many others.

Innovatively told through 80 film reviews, Joshua Mattson's novel A Short Film About Disappointment is a witty and thought-provoking debut.

Booklist wrote of the book:

"Mattson’s intelligence, in the form of knife-sharp observations and acrobatic language, takes the novel’s center stage."

In his own words, here is Joshua Mattson's Book Notes music playlist for his debut novel A Short Film About Disappointment:

Don’t Bother, in A Short Film About Disappointment, is a remake of a classic science-fiction comedy, which devolves into nationalist spectacle during the second iteration. Earth receives a signal from a distant star which indicates sentience. The narrator, a film critic, likes the first version.

In the original, the whole film passes in a conference room, where bureaucrats maneuver to wrangle the honor of making first contact with the aliens. After eighty minutes of slapstick, they agree to not contact the aliens, unable to decide which institution should have the honor.

The reboot, loathed by the narrator, is an invasion film, an advertisement for the military.

Logan Broder, the director of the reboot, thought himself to be a visionary filmmaker. He commissioned John Satmost, a janitor on the studio lot, to do the soundtrack to his film, after he heard him practicing scales in a boiler room. Three days later, Logan Broder received his soundtrack, which was one piece of sound, twenty-five and one-half minutes long. Broder used it to score the final act, the slaughter of the enemy. How did Satmost feel about the abuse of his music? Satmost had never seen so much money in his life, and his knees hurt from three decades of polishing banisters. What did it matter if his depiction of numinous experience was paired with a rather tasteless dogfight between seven hundred F-16 fighter planes and a swarm of scintillating orbs that fire indigo lasers? Even a janitor could understand that images have become bankrupt, that they have no meaning at all, that they can be invested with the opposite of the meaning which they allegedly convey.

The sketch ensemble WOCA (Women of Color Anonymous) presents a stand-up show unlike any other!

You'll get a peek inside the head of Pilar Valdés, a Puerto Rican woman ready to take Los Angeles by storm!...(But, not like an actual storm, she's still recovering from Hurricane María. You know what? Let's leave natural disasters out of this). An evening of dark, personal comedy unlike anything you've ever seen before. Except maybe "Nanette." OK, it's a little bit like "Nanette." But 100% more Puerto Rican.

Luke Pell Says He’s ‘Super Excited’ For New Relationship After Ex-Girlfriend Holly Allen Bashes Him on Podcast Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

Luke Pell has had a rollercoaster of a year—in the romance department, anyway. The former Bachelorette star, a frontrunner on JoJo Fletcher’s season of the ABC reality show who was later eyed as a serious Bachelor contender, has issued a response to his on-again, off-again girlfriend Holly Allen’s recent interview with Reality Steve in which she talked in depth about their private relationship.

In an interview on The Rose Buds Podcast, Pell called out his ex for her “vindictive” and “angry” behavior as she detailed their private matters, including his reasons for signing on to The Bachelor: Winter Games and alleging that they announced they got back together right after the Winter Games reunion finale disaster for “damage control.”

Pell expressed disappointment that Allen chose not to respect the privacy of their relationship, but he added that he believes she did the two-hour tell-all out of anger over their breakup.

“All I Need” by Bahama Bleach – A Song Feature Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
Bahama Bleach has skilled guitarists and isn’t afraid to unleash them. “All I Need” features galloping percussion and a seemingly infinite supply of attractive guitar hooks. The synth plays a significant role, particularly in the last minute of the song, but Bahama Bleach is a guitar band, at least based on “All I Need.”

We were fans of the track during the first two minute of “All I Need.” Still, appreciation turned into obsession during the instrument-only portion starting shortly after the two-minute mark. That instrumental portion begins strong and then turns stronger, as the guitar interplay shifts at 2:35.

The members of Bahama Bleach are Callum Christie (vocals, guitar), Oliver Marson (guitar, synth), James Selvey (bass), and Anthony Paine (drums). Christie and Marson formed the band when they moved to London after meeting at Reading University.

Bahama Bleach released its debut single, “Someone Else,” earlier this year. The single was recorded at David Leighton’s Riverrun Studios in the quiet suburbs of Potton, Cambridgeshire. The band committed to releasing other tracks recorded during the sessions at Riverrun, with the releases happening while they were gigging around London and the rest of the UK. “All I Need” is a second delivery on that commitment ("For a Week" was the first).
