No worries, Raymond. My intention there was to correct, not to retaliate, and I'm sorry if I came across as aggressive. The wording of your reply read to me like you'd misconstrued my "keep plugging away" line to apply to myself as opposed to you, so I was trying to clear up the (perceived) confusion; an attempt which clearly backfired. Oops.

I also used to be a classic radio buff. The interest waned when I grew out of my teens, but I still have a soft spot for 'em. But my parents also used to read to me when I was a little kid, and since I was a precocious little tyke and didn't learn to read properly until several years past the standard age here in the US - ahh, unschooling - they needed something else to occupy my bored little mind when neither of them could read to me. Hence, I grew up with audiobooks, and there my interest hasn't waned. (And considering how very slow I am with regular books, it's unlikely to wane anytime soon.)

I've actually listened to many books narrated by George Guidall - he seems to be a pretty prolific narrator. And I'm not sure if he's really a cut above the rest; true, a lot of audiobooks I've encountered have had mediocre or down right crappy narration, but there's also a lot of real talent in the field, and they turn in some quality stuff. (Then again, I'm not the best person to judge this stuff - when it comes to movies and tv, I can't even spot a bad performance 4 times out of 5, so why imagine I'd be any more discerning when it comes to audio narration?)

I actually haven't read any of Banker's books so far - again, slow reader - but I appreciate those of his short stories I've heard on podcasts so far.

Anyway, congratulations on your job offers, and your refund; I'll cross my fingers that everything works out financially between now and October.

I know bugger-all about wrestling, but I have been entertained by Noah "The Spoony One" Antwiler's video rants about it. I've also heard good things about Lucha Underground, which I understand is less than a decade old, but I don't know how one would go about watching it. Oh, and coming back to commentary, the funniest thing of any kind I've seen in a while have got to be Martin "Little Kuriboh" Billany's "Mark Remark" videos; practically incomprehensible to someone not already familiar with the WWE, but so incredibly funny that I have to pause an average of two or three times an episode because my sides hurt so much from laughing.

... Not sure if any of that helps with what you're looking for but, ehn, thought I'd mention just in case.
CAT DAY      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Happy International Cat Day, Spy Vibers! Spy Vibe recommends leather for your active week ahead. Let's face it, it's frustrating when your outfit rips every time you have to dodge bullets on the back of your scooter or when you give a few Judo throws in a dark alley. And don't even mention those midnight strolls over the rooftops! Leather catsuits, especially made for our heroines, are a time-proven solution for your well-dressed adventures. Before this style became hyper-sexualized with exaggerated physicality and shiny latex, it was the original design for cool athletic lady detectives, jewel thieves, and spies. From a time when women in pop culture could be powerful by being independent and skilled, characters didn't have to always play the card of availability- as Gloria Steinem has pointed out: often the only game in town for women to claim power. Figures like Irma Vepp (Les Vampires/1915), Miss Fury (1940s), Cathy Gale (The Avengers/1964), Mrs Peel (The Avengers/1965), Honey West (1965), Marianne Faithful (Girl On a Motorcycle/1968)), and Catwoman (1966) below show us a far more nuanced possibility. Lady Spy Vibers never settle for less! Related posts: Kinky BootsPeeling Off the TrenchcoatsMods to Moongirls. Check out my spring sale on eBay here. Love the fashion? The Night Aunt Milly Died

Stacy wrote to tell of her bizarre experience:

“I'm in my 50s and do not have many encounters. I'm not a ghost chaser and I'm not good at spinning yarns but I have had two experiences in my life that have convinced me that there are ghosts, hence, something after death. One has actually taken me 40 years to find out the truth about - my Aunt Milly.

When I was very young, my Aunt Milly and I had one of those special bonds. She doted on me and I loved her to death. She would always bring me Pop Tarts when she visited. When I was about seven she came to spend the night at our house as she often did. I went to bed and then in the early AM hours, I woke up to hear my aunt crying and I figured out she was feeling sick. Then I heard the ambulance arrive and the paramedics coming in the house to help her. I heard them climb the stairs to go to her room. When they arrived, her crying became worse and I could hear the terror in her voice. It was tearing at my heart to hear her fear. She kept talking to my father saying, 'Please, Bobby! I don't want to go! Don't let them take me!' It was just heart-wrenching. I can still hear that fearful crying to this day. I guess you could say it was haunting me my entire life. Well when I got up in the morning, my parents told me she had died.

Over the years I never talked about that night with my parents as it was so upsetting to me. Finally, 40 years later my mother and I were talking about Aunt Milly. I finally told her I was awake when she got sick and heard her cries and fear. My mother then told me that it wasn't possible, that she had actually died in her sleep and was dead long before the ambulance arrived to take her away. How had I heard her cries and fear if she was already dead? Why did no one else hear it? It took me 40 years to realize that I'd heard her from wherever comes next.”

Saudi Arabia 'Crucified' Condemned Man

Saudi Arabia executed and crucified a Myanmar man in the holy city of Mecca on Wednesday in a rare form of punishment reserved for the most egregious crimes.

Elias Abulkalaam Jamaleddeen was accused of breaking into the home of a woman from Myanmar, firing a weapon in it then repeatedly stabbing her, which led to her death, the official Saudi Press Agency reported, citing an Interior Ministry statement. He was also accused of stealing weapons and trying to kill another man whose home he broke into, as well as attempting to rape a woman.

The ruling was supported by the country’s supreme court and endorsed by the king.

Crucifixions in Saudi Arabia entail hanging a body in public after an execution, and are unusual. A Yemeni man was crucified in 2010 for raping and killing a girl and shooting dead her father. - Saudi Arabia Carries Out Rare Crucifixion for Murder, Theft

Fisherman Recalls 'Sea Monster' Encounter

CAPE SABLE ISLAND, N.S. – The 1967 Shag Harbour UFO crash is not the only strange, unexplained occurrence that has happened in Shelburne County over the years.

Shag Harbour UFO Festival goers were treated to an eye witness account of a sea creature encounter, experienced by Cape Sable Island fisherman Rodney Ross in July 1976, while fishing with his father on the fishing grounds known as Pollock Shoal.

The opening night of the UFO Festival (Aug. 3) was only the third time that Ross has told the story to an audience. He is the last of the five fishermen aboard three different boats that saw the creature during a one-week period 42-years ago.

“Some like to call it the South Side sea monster and I think I probably agree it looked like a monster,” said Ross.

The story begins on a Monday when a fellow fisherman, the late Eisner Penney, was out fishing on the Pollock Shoal. He had finished fishing for the day and started for home when he turned around and saw this strange looking creature following behind him, said Ross. Dissident II provide this week’s ballad, a really catchy acoustic sing-a-long and Manchester neo-folk band Winterfylleth finish the podcast sat around a campfire with their highly atmospheric ‘Embers’.

Helsingin söpöin bissefestari      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Jano-podcast kertoo!

Did Mom Just Come Out to Her Queer Kids?      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Savage Love Letter of the Day by Dan Savage

1517598297-1516999045-savage-letter-of-the-day-stamp-2018.jpg

My brother (gay) and I (pan) have long suspected our mom might fall somewhere on the queer spectrum. Yesterday she said "we" and "us" in reference to queer humans. I didn't say anything because my brain couldn't process quickly enough. But, did my mom just come out? Do we follow up? Was this an invitation to ask questions? Or just a show of solidarity for her queer kids?

Did Mom Out Herself?

The one acronym that rules includes us all—LGBTQIA and its many metastasizing variations—features at least one A, DMOH, and often two. One of those As stands for "asexual" and the other stands for "ally." So it's possible that your mother used "we" and "us" not because she identifies with the L, B, or T, but because she identifies with the A-for-ally, since she's an ally to to her G and P kids. But the only person who knows for sure what's up with your mom is your mom, obviously, so you're gonna have to ask her what she meant by that "we" and that "us."

That was too easy—so, hey, bonus question after the jump...

Hey Dan! I'm a long time listener of the podcast and I have a sex question that I'm sure you've answered a million times but here we go. I just ended an LTR that was way past it's expiry date. I got on Tinder wanting to just have some fun for a while—basically, my recently terminated relationship was sexless and I was dying to get fucked. Somehow I ended up meeting a great guy and everything's going great... except for one thing, of course: sex. We can fool around and he'll get really hard and we can get each other off just fine. But when it's time to actually have sex he goes soft. He's said a ton of times it's nerves and that it's just been a really long time for him and that's why he's so nervous. And I'm obviously understanding but I thought it would just be a something that was a one-off or like a couple times but this has happened like 10+ times. It's only been a few weeks so am I just being impatient? Do you have any tips? I've tried touching him and getting really close to just kind of switch my hands to my vagina but that doesn't even work. I'm trying not to rush all of this, and the sexual things we do ARE great but my relationship that I needed out of was completely sexless for so long and your girl needs to get FUCKED. Help!

Frequently Underwhelming Couplings Keeping Me Enervated

First, FUCKME, all those other ways you and the new guy are getting each other off? That's sex too. All those presumably non-PIV things you're doing to each other? Totally sex, totally counts. Which means you are having sex—actual sex, actually—with this guy, FUCKME, even if you aren't having the particular kind of sex you enjoy most and got on Tinder to find: sex of the PIV variety.

The go-to advice in a situation like this is to take the pressure off—tell him there's no rush, FUCKME, and when you head to bed, tell him you have no expectations. If he can fuck you, that would be great; if he can't fuck you, there are plenty of other equally great things you can do together. Enjoy what's working for the time being and, with any luck, soon he'll relax enough to get past the psychological block that's chasing his erections away at the crucial moment.

That said, you're newly single, you met this guy on Tinder, you've only been seeing him for three weeks. Presumably you two aren't committed and/or exclusive at this stage, FUCKME, which means you're free to keep seeing this guy while seeking out other opportunities, i.e. PIV sex with guys whose cocks don't get soft at that crucial moment.

But if you're a one-man-at-a-time kinda gal or if he's made it clear he's a one-woman-at-at-time kind guy—if you're a star-crossed pair serial monogamists—give him three more weeks and 10+ more times to pull himself (and his erections) together. But don't tell him that, of course, as it ensure the problem won't go away before his time runs out.

The “blue wave” came through Blabbermouth's home state on Tuesday, and Dan Savage, Rich Smith, and Eli Sanders talk about what happened — including some drama Rich got into with local Republicans trying to pull an “enemy of the people” move on his right to report.

They also talk about the Ohio special election, in which there’s a virtual tie between the Democrat and Republican candidates in a district that Republicans would normally win easily. That’s great news for wave-trackers, but: Did the Green Party candidate in this special Ohio election spoil the Dem’s chances of turning a virtual tie into an outright win? Dan has some thoughts.

After that, Katie Herzog explains what QAnon is and why Republican “thought leaders” are trying to keep Trump’s base from believing the conspiracy theory.

Finally, Dan offers a tribute to Charlotte Rae and Eli talks about a new, must-see documentary called Dark Money. Plus...

Democrats: Silence All Opposition      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
By Douglas V. Gibbs
Author, Speaker, Instructor, Radio Host
___________________________________________________
The meaning of peace is the absence of opposition to socialism. -- Karl Marx
_________________________________________________________
Freedom of Speech was among the rights enumerated in the First Amendment, revealing how important to the Founding Fathers that particular Natural Right truly was (is).  The goal was to protect political and religious speech, and the liberal left in today's America is working to silence that right in the public square, and on the internet.

From safe spaces to political correctness, the younger generation has gotten to the point that they don't even know what freedom of speech is, anymore.

The younger generation is the generation that is tasked with securing liberty, or allowing it to die, during America's next era, yet they've been convinced that the liberty we have is somehow a part of an offensive and racist scheme to destroy equality.

The next generation is deeply invested in the internet, and social media, and the liberal left Democrats of the 21st Century know it.  From their point of view, the way to finish the indoctrination of the younger generation, and to ultimately silence any opposition to liberal leftism, is on the internet battlefield and in the minds of the youth.

In the war for the minds of the younger generation, and ultimately control over America's future, people like conservative warrior Alex Jones have been shut down.  In the case of Jones, his content is being deleted on a number of social media outlets, be it Apple, Facebook, and others.

Across the Atlantic, Tommy Robinson, who uses social media to expose the Islamization of Britain, was arrested for daring to film on social media a courthouse during a Muslim rape-gang trial.  His life was in placed in mortal danger by the authorities when he was put into a prison facility filled with Muslims (71% Muslim majority).  Now that he is free, INSTAGRAM has decided to ban Tommy Robinson for daring to tell the truth.

Candidate Elizabeth Heng is a Republican Candidate in the central California 16th Congressional District.  Her parents escaped the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s, and to show the terror of communism and her parent's harrowing story, Heng made a video about the whole thing.  When she wanted to use the video for her candidate advertisement, FACEBOOK blocked it.

Black Conservative Candace Owens has been targeted, revealing that the left's targeting is not so much about targeting so-called racists and hate speech as they say, but that they are actually targeting conservatives, no matter who they are.  In short, if you disagree with them, no matter who you are, you will become a targeted individual.

Facebook wishes to double down on their assault against anyone who holds an opinion that opposes the authoritarian collectivist views of the Democrat Party, so they have gone so far as to ask Congress to change the rules in place for journalists.  This would allow Facebook to become a safe haven for journalists, and for them to be able to do things that would not be allowed by law otherwise in terms of information gathering, and using Facebook's algorithms.

Conservatives and Republicans are not the only ones seen as a danger to the leftist's agenda.  TWITTER has suspended a number of Libertarian Accounts, as well.  The fact is, if you are not 100% in agreement with the liberal left's agenda, you are an enemy and must be silenced, be it in the public square, or online.  This is why the U.S. Senate Democrats are, right now, as I am writing this, circulating plans for the federalization (government takeover ) of the internet.  The liberal left believes all opposition must be silenced at all costs.  The ends justify the means.  They say it's for the "Survival of our democracy", and that they must ban sites to ensure that salvation.  What they mean is that if they don't ban any and every website and form of speech that opposes them, the coup in place designed to takeover America would be in jeopardy - and they just can't have that.

For the sake of the Marxist Revolution in America, free Speech is the enemy and must be quelled, so FACEBOOK, APPLE, and GOOGLE are all getting out of the free speech business.

Their enemies must be silenced in the name of hate.  Anyone who stands in the way must be purged.  Alex Jones is only the beginning.  InfoWars is but one domino.  More shutdowns are on their way.

"First, we will take Eastern Europe, then the masses of Asia, then we will encircle the United States which will be the last bastion of capitalism. We will not have to attack. It will fall like an overripe fruit into our hands. " -- Vladimir Lenin, Soviet Revolutionary

"We cannot expect Americans to jump from capitalism to Communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving Americans small doses of socialism until they suddenly awake to find they have Communism." -- Nikita Khrushchev, Soviet Leader - 1960

While the final quote I would like to offer has actually never been proven to actually be a quote by George Orwell, but it is often attributed to him, I do believe it is appropriate as the final word in this article: "In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act."

1899 - Homeward: Life in the Year After Prison w/ Bruce Western      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Bruce Western, Professor of Sociology at Harvard University and Visiting Professor at Columbia University, joins us to discuss his new book, 'Homeward: Life in the Year After Prison'.

On today's show: Kris Kobach says voter fraud is a nationwide issue despite weak evidence, insists no proof is ever enough for liberals. An overview of the latest election results. "Right to work" goes down in Missouri.

Bruce Western joins us to discuss his book, 'Homeward: Life in the Year After Prison.' For this book, Western followed 122 formerly incarcerated people for one year after they were released from prison to see how they re-integrated into society, with a focus on employment and family relationships. He found most had been exposed to trauma and had high rates of mental and physical health problems. The factors for "recidivism" and the role played by addiction. The effect of social policy (or lack thereof) around healthcare, housing, and economic inequality.

On the fun half: "Working Girl": feminist classic or ode to capitalist patriarchy? Why you should vote for Bernie-endorsed candidate Randy Bryce in WI. Louie Gohmert lament that Americans want entitlements more than Space Force, blames Obama for privatizing NASA. Dyana in WA shares her experience with the for-profit carceral state. Chicago police use truck full of sneakers as "bait" for teen troublemakers. Fox News contributor asks how Trump could not tell a lie in interview with Mueller. Jessie Jane Duff says America needs to suffocate Iran. John Bolton wants to put "maximum pressure" on Iranian government via sanctions. A Jamaican caller on the damage Alex Jones does to black youth. NY Congressman Chris Collins indicted on insider trading charges.

Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics gave LeBron James and Co. a run for their money in the Eastern Conference Finals last season, falling just short of the NBA Finals. Now that James is out West with the Los Angeles Lakers, many believe the Celtics are the team to beat in the East.We can certainly count Brown among that group. Looking ahead to a James-less Eastern Conference for the 2018-19 NBA season, Brown is absolutely positive he’ll help his team get to that next level.“We’re getting to the Finals,” Brown said on the Pull Up Podcast with Portland Trail Blazers guard C.J. McCollum and Yahoo Sports insider Jordan Schultz. “No question about it.”Boston certainly has the pieces in place to make a strong run. Both Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward — coming back very strong from his season-ending injury — are expected to be fully healthy for the coming season. No doubt Boston will be challenged by the likes of Toronto, Philadelphia and Indiana. But make no mistake about it: The Celtics are the strongest team in the

- Yahoo!

"Doctor, you -- you're being childish!"
"Well, of course I am!  There's no point being grown-up if you can't be childish sometimes."
-- Sarah Jane Smith and The Fourth Doctor, Doctor Who: "Robot"

Celebrating the 4th Anniversary of the award-winning Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast, my partner in time Jesse Jackson and I have returned with a new episode! This time, we review "Robot", the first serial of Doctor Who Season 12 in 1974featuring Tom Baker's first episode as the Fourth Doctor, Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, Nicholas Courtney as The Brigadier, and the debut of Ian Marter as new companion Harry Sullivan!

In this episode, Jesse and I discuss things like my recovering from nasal surgery, Jesse seeing Queen cover band Killer Queen, Tom Baker being completely different from Jon Pertwee, the two Osgoods, Tom Baker being the original Madman in a Box, typical English weather, my watching the Tom Baker run after Peter Davison's run, loving post-regeneration episodes, David Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes" video, the Brigadier finally seeing the Doctor regenerate with his own eyes, more love for Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, Sarah Jane being called out for having a chauvinist attitude, the introduction of Harry Sullivan, Sarah Jane being the Lois Lane of the Doctor Who universe, the Brigadier always being fun to watch, Think Tank's attitude that humanity should follow scientists because they're smarter, Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics, the K1 Robot being a King Kong metaphor, Professor Kettlewell as a surprise bad guy, my recommendation for the new Doctor Who Season 12 Blu-Ray set, the Fourth Doctor using jelly babies to distract people, my Reverse the Reverse the Polarity segment, new listener feedback from Paul from Australia and Holly from Wisconsin, thoughts on the new Series Eleven trailer, why there's nothing wrong with feeling hopeful about the Jodie Whittaker era, teasing our upcoming show plans, and more!

Previously On MGoBlog Hello post from Ace.
Notes No twitter! Missouri State basketball decommit.

Film

Senior:

Ronnie Bell is the kind of recruit who assumes that Bill in Social Studies is at it again when someone tells him Michigan's on the phone:

“I went through the entire football season, and it wasn’t until a month after football season ended [that Michigan reached out]. Mentally, I was like, ‘Dang, football isn’t going to happen.’ I can’t even explain how surprised I was. I was like, ‘What?!’ I thought for sure I was being pranked.”

At the time Bell was headed to Missouri State for basketball, which he'd committed to before an 89-catch, 1600+ yard senior season on the gridiron. He was the Kansas City area's player of the year, and that's a fairly large area with several P5 recruits annually. But still the phone did not ring unless Bill in Social Studies had managed to slip his minders yet again.

Michigan only stumbled on him because Harbaugh's brother-in-law is a basketball coach in the area and tipped him off towards the end of that monster season. Michigan put on the tape, and:

"There's got to be a problem here," Harbaugh thought.

There was not. And Harbaugh isn't just blowing smoke about a flier Michigan took. Let's take the unusual step of embedding his highlights in the body of the post, because you may as well scout the guy too:

That is good tape.

[After the JUMP: hermit story]

Bad tape has a lot of wide open easy catches and replays. Bell's tape has a lot of high-pointed balls in traffic and a healthy number of circus catches, with routine balls limited to touchdowns because all touchdowns must go in highlight reels no matter how banal. He's obviously too dang skinny, but being a basketball recruit first and foremost through November of 2017 explains that away rather nicely. That also helps explain the bizarre shape of Bell's recruitment. Harbaugh again:

"He didn't go to any of the shoe camps. The Adidas camp, the Nike camp, or the Under Armour camp. He was busy playing AAU basketball."

Harbaugh said Bell played AAU basketball every summer since the sixth grade, keeping him from attending camps populated by football coaches.

Bell's avoidance of camps was so strident as to be obtuse. His head coach:

Ronnie never attended a single camp or do the other things kids do to get recruited. Ronnie never did that. He played in games and practiced with us while other kids were going to this and that, he was declining invitations. Colleges were saying 'come here and run a 40' and he would skip that to come to weights and football practice that afternoon.

I was telling kids to feel free to skip a gym practice for camp or anything you want to and he thought that was ludicrous and I think that hurt him. He didn't get out on the radar, he wasn't chasing them down, and some schools would come in and see the film and were ready to bite, but I think they were waiting for someone to bite first and then it took off when football season started and he was a freak since week one. We all saw it, we knew it, but I think the schools just missed.

Ronnie Bell lives high on a mountaintop and only permits the villagers to ask one question of him every harvest. If that question is "do you play football?" he arcs a single eyebrow and smiles tightly. It is entirely appropriate that Bell's commit announcement wasn't even a tweet but an update to his twitter bio. Then I think he deleted his twitter.

Anyway: that's a pretty good, convincing story why Bell was off everyone's radar. And once he got on someone's there was a reassuring scramble. When Michigan came in with an offer there was a flood of other interest that may have turned into a healthy offer list if Bell hadn't immediately committed to Michigan and returned to his hermit lifestyle. Kansas State was on the verge of an offer; Nebraska, Penn State, and Notre Dame also got on the phone more or less immediately. The sincerity of those inquiries is impossible to judge, obviously.

The hermit lifestyle means that scouting is basically nonexistent. There was a brief round of articles immediately post-commit seemingly based off just highlight film. Woody Wommack confirms that Bell is a human with the proper number of limbs:

"He looks pretty good. He's a little undersized but he's definitely productive and looks good playing receiver. He knows how to get off the line and seems to get open whenever he wants."

Allen Trieu did give it a crack for 24/7:

Smooth, glides around the field and shows good elusiveness, short-area quickness, and change of direction. Does not exhibit elite long speed ... does not have any on-record, reliable times. Tracks the ball and adjusts to passes very naturally. Competitive as a blocker. Conscientious and hard-working kid ... will have to get stronger ... Intangibles -- football smarts, competitive nature and attention to detail -- are likely to allow him to play and produce beyond his measurables.

Trieu's last sentence there is important. Bell's father was the WR coach at Missouri Western until he decided to focus on his son's potential career, and Bell is really, really a coach's son. He's whatever the coaching equivalent of a gym rat is:

I remember he spent a lot of time in college film rooms and he was out there on the field for college practices, so he's very smart. He would come to the sidelines in our games, grab an Ipad and start showing kids what was happening and talking to the quarterbacks. ...he came to our Sunday coaches meetings. He came to every single one of them. We would gather on Sundays, go over the offensive and defensive game plan together and he was at every one of them, ate food, watched through the gameplan and knew everything that was going on.

Steve Lorenz reported shortly after Bell's commitment that the staff "was really impressed with Bell's explosiveness, ball skills and especially his body control" and that his vertical was "massive"; the opposing coach in the article Rivals always does said he had "speed and explosiveness" plus "great hands and quick feet." Elsewhere Brandon Brown put a number on that vert: 40 inches.

Folks are always taking bouncy basketball wings and turning them into tight ends. Here Michigan is taking a guard and doing the same. It's not a bad bet, and when the guy is also amongst the most productive WRs in the country it's a better bet still. Despite Michigan's clear desperation at the point they struck upon Bell he seems like a legitimate sleeper worth the swing.

Etc.: nope.

Why Jeremy Gallon? Bell is much taller, granted, and much lower-rated, granted. He still projects as a surprise outside receiver who uses his relentless attention to detail and resemblance to Snoop from The Wire to outsmart and intimidate opposing defensive backs. Think it's a bad idea to throw up a fade to a six-foot guy? Well, let me tell you about Jeremy Gallon and his rocket boots.

Bell probably won't have the opportunity to be the #1 until deep into his career and that'll separate him from Gallon but if he goes for 300 yards against Indiana remember I told you so. (If he disappears into a hole, forget this post entirely.)

Other comparables include Grant Perry, another super-productive high school receiver who's a bigger slot or smaller outside WR, and Mario Manningham if Michigan rolls like three critical hits in a row.

Guru Reliability: Nil. Unscouted except for some local efforts.

Variance: Moderate. Not huge but will fill out. Super productive and the most coach kid of all coach kids. Floor relatively high.

Ceiling: Moderate-plus. Maybe he's a secret Manningham but probably he's a good #2.

General Excitement Level: Moderate-plus. If Bell was the second guy in a two-WR class with a touted dude that would be just fine with me. As the only dude in his year I'm a little fussed, but not about Bell. He's got a good story, good film, and a ton of production. He's likely to contribute.

Projection: Near-certain redshirt as he transitions away from basketball training and packs on sufficient pounds to not get broken in half. Large and good WR class in front of him should block him through 2020, and then it'll depend on just how those guys develop. If Black and DPJ are still around hard to see Bell passing them; if they're NFL-bound he's going to be in with Martin and Collins for reps.

Slot versatility will help; Bell's career might look like Grant Perry's if Michigan suddenly needed Perry to be the #1 guy as a senior.

His Hello post was reasonably effusive as well, which was also surprising given the feelings shown toward other lower-rated WRs.

I do think he has a potential to be a solid #2; he's athletic enough to battle for balls, and he does feel like a legit 2-sport athlete who can grow into the position as he focuses on it.

I liked his tape back during the commitment post, and Harbaugh talked about Bell and his weird recruitment more than a few times on his podcast. Harbaugh seems sold on him, and what I've see tells me why. 6'1" is plenty tall enough, and his production against a decent level of competition backs it up too.

I don't understand why some of these guys with insane HS production end up ranked so low.  I get that they might not be 4/5* guys due to measurables, but do the ranking services really think a guy with Bell/Perry level of HS production just won't find a way to get open at the next level?  You'd think guys like this would end up in the 400-600 composite range, yet every year there are DE's that have played one season of football in the top 100 because they can run fast and have long arms, ignoring the fact that they have terrible pad level and uh, don't really know how to play football.

Here is another example of a player on Michigan - List of HS accomplishments:

Honors and Rankings
• USA-Today All-Ohio Defensive Player of the Year
• Named Ohio’s Division I Defensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press
• Member of Maxpreps 2016 Football All American team
• OHSAA Defensive Player of the Year honors

That is preferred walk-on Matt Brown.  I can see how HS stars become average P5 players but it is amazing to me that they can basically become unranked nobodies to the ranking services.

It’s tough to see all kids and these services like rivals wants them at their camp. They don’t come to their camp and their rating takes a hit. Bell may turn out to be a stud but as stated never attended camp and everyone assumed he would play basketball so never looked at him. This is where good coaches find those diamonds in the rough

The recruiting "services" are businesses that are focused on profit margin. It's far more efficient for them to send a scout to a camp where he might see 30 or 40 top prospects than to watch tape of high school games that might have 1 or 2 prospects. They save more money by maintaining minimal staffing levels, and missing prospects like Bell or Brown, than they would make by being more accurate and scouting those guys.

Exactly right.  Brian, Ace and company have done a great job of discussing the state of the current recruiting/scouting industry.  Particularly as it pertains to football, it is consolidated and hyper-focused on just a few camps and a few all-star events and shoe company showcases.  "Underwear football" is how many guys are judged, not the actual body of work in pads, etc.

By the same token, there are a lot of ultra productive HS players who never done anything in D1 level. It's a totally different game from HS where you're often the best athlete as opposed to D1 level where everyone is a good athlete.

Same reason why ultra productive college players who don't pan out in the NFL.

What it really boils down to is how lazy these sites have gotten. They hardly do any in-game scouting anymore, so if you’re a guy who doesn’t go to camps you’re going to fly under the radar. Which is why so many people take recruiting rankings with a grain of salt anyway. A guy like Bell who is probably a low 4*/high 3* type gets ranked outside the top 1000 and is ignored completely by the sites until after he commits.

Love the under the radar guys, who have great athletic skills.  Bonus ... if he did delete his Twitter account, Hail to him.  This country would be a better place w/o Facebook and Twitter, and all the 13 year olds that can pose as adults (plus those adults that act like they're 13 years old).

These days whenever a player doesn't do the usual Twitter maneuvers, I actually do consider it a major plus.  UVA has a DT commit for 2019 whose rankings and offers should have placed him a thousand miles beyond UVA's reach.  When he released his top ten I thought "we actually have a shot" because, instead of having a huge fancy graphic made with logos and a picture of him in a thunderstorm (or, like, being a thunderstorm), he just typed them into Twitter.  A revolutionary idea.  Sure enough, he committed to UVA over Ohio State, a whole mess of SEC offers, and goodness knows what else.

A lack of social media interest or savvy seems to be an indicator of high intelligence and character in football and basketball recruits.  (To be clear, it doesn't work the other way around.)  It's weird, but welcome to 2018, I guess.

This puts me a little at ease. However, I'm still concerned that we are taking 2 super dark horse projects in back to back classes with not one elite WR. DPJ and Black won't be here forever

Being the managing editor of Instinct Magazine has been a fun, rewarding, and stressful job for the past couple of years.  It's been a joy to be able to have a great mix of voices represented on our platform.  We have demographically varied contributing writers from New York, Philadelphia, Fort Lauderdale, Nashville, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Liverpool, UK.

We also get to see that demographic variance in our readers.  We are made aware of our audience by he many submissions of stories as well as being tagged heavily on Instagram: @instinctmagazine . Instead of keeping those tweets in house, we thought we would share some of our favorites of this last week.

We were hoping this one was going to be a video, but alas, no, it was just a pic from @will_simons_photography . Many of the tags we receive are businesses trying to promote, models trying to get traction, so this one is a combination, giving us great pics and a variety of men looking to get some traction.

On Saturday, the Rams went out to Canvas Stadium and played football. OK, really, they practiced, but it was a game-like situation and the first such situation this team has been put through.  What did we take away from the scrimmage? Well, we go "First and 10" to give you 10 quick takeaways and then we break down three of them further, in much deeper detail. K.J. Carta-Samuels, Rashaad Boddie and Warren Jackson are those three details and we hear from Mike Bobo on his key players. What did Bobo like about what Carta-Samuels has done? We also hear straight from Carta-Samuels -- the likely starting quarterback of the Rams -- how he's prepared and how he's learned the offense so well, so quickly. It wasn't all good in the scrimmage; who struggled? We look into that.  And, later in the podcast, we hear from key member of the defensive backfield, Jordan Fogal, about those DBs, we talk about Joe Parker standing up to the ESPN GameDay people about when college football season really kicks off and we talk a little Next Level Rams.

[ Polls & Surveys ] Open Question : Why do my parents always depress me and how do I make them stop?      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
whenever I’m in the car with my parents there’s no radio music- they only either listen to podcasts on climate change and how it’s gonna kill us all in the next 10 years- or they play Mozart or some other soft classical music and talk about climate change. It’s depressing and I want them to stop. It’s not as simple as moving out because that requires money, and I’m not allowed to have a job while I’m in school. tl;dr parents have depressing intellectual discussions and I can’t avoid them or move out.

YouTube, Apple and Facebook Ban Infowars, Which Decries 'Mega Purge'      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
YouTube, Apple and Facebook have removed main outlets for conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and his Infowars website, citing repeated violations of policies against hate speech and glorifying violence. Infowars responded by accusing the companies of censorship. The streaming service Spotify also expanded a ban imposed last week on some of Jones' content, saying Monday that "The Alex Jones Show has lost access to the Spotify platform." On Sunday, Apple and iTunes deleted five podcasts related to Infowars and Jones. The other bans then piled up in quick succession. "Apple does not tolerate hate speech," the company said in a statement. "We believe in representing a wide range of views, so long as people are respectful to those with differing opinions." YouTube and Facebook had previously warned Jones and Infowars that they were accumulating "strikes" by violating the services' community standards. Early Monday, Facebook announced that it had permanently removed four Alex Jones-related pages

The Public Square      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Last night I deleted all my tweets going back to the beginning of Twitter time. (Except for a mysterious 49 tweets that apparently can’t be accessed?)

And I tried to make my profile info very clear about me not being there any more. Removed avatar and background image. Changed bio to “Finished with Twitter.” Changed display name to the name of this blog.

* * *

My problem with Twitter remains the same: centralized social networking concentrates way too much power in one place.

Twitter is awful in other ways, sure, not just for that reason. (The issues with Nazis and harassment and abuse. The way it treats third-party Twitter developers.)

And Facebook, too, is awful in its own ways.

But, even if it were well-run, centralized social networking is still a deeply bad and unhealthy idea. Josh Marshall writes that we should be concerned about

…ceding so much of the public square to private platforms which really aren’t about free speech in any way and don’t have free speech in any way. They’re all ordered by algorithms designed to maintain time on site and service ad sales. In no sense are they open or free.

Twitter is not the public square. It just wants you to think it is. The web itself is the public square.

* * *

It’s not like I’m short on ways to read and write and connect: email, RSS, text messages, podcasts, Slack, the chat app my company uses, GitHub, my blog, my microblog. Plus real life!

* * *

I get it, though, when people think they need Twitter for exposure and marketing. In fact, I help with social media at my job — and I’m a professional, and I try to do the best job I can and get even better at it.

But I don’t need Twitter for me. For a long time there’s been just one thing I’d like to convince Twitter users of: that centralized social networking is harmful to society and to individuals.

I can make that point on Twitter — but it’s hollow there, since the medium really is the message. Better to make that point by not using Twitter at all.

PS Matt Haughey has left the building.
