This story will literally take people to a new dimension. Readers will feel they are on a journey on F-18 fighter planes and a trip to the moon while combating espionage, the dark secrets of the moon, and kidnapping. Jacobson commented, “After reading this article about Apollo 17 bringing back moon rocks I had an idea that maybe they could be used for military purposes. Since I do not write science fiction I needed to do a lot of research and worked with some awesome people. I talked with an engineer who worked on the Space Shuttle and is currently working on a NASA project. The different organizations that cooperated were NASA, JPL, Lockheed, and SPACEX. People helped me work out the logistics of how the mission should be carried out. Even though it was quite an endeavor, given the opportunity I would do it again. Mainly, because I have been fascinated with space, growing up with Star Trek and the Apollo missions.” Readers find out that after returning to the earth in 1972 Apollo 17 brought back some classified items. Discovering its importance, a NASA engineer leaks the information to foreign governments. Now there is a race to the moon to find an element called Caesarium. If found it can be used to produce a weapon with an ultimate magnitude of destruction, that has important military applications. In order to stop China and Russia Hector DeSantos and Aaron Uziel (Uzi) join with two astronauts on a mission called Operation Containment. They must prevent Caesarium from being brought back. Meanwhile back on earth, Karen Vail and company have determined that the mission has been sabotaged and they must find out the mole who did it. Karen Vail and her colleague Alexandra Rusakov will have to find the mole and destroy the spy ring that planted malware on the ships that are now headed for the Moon. To complicate matters Hector’s father is kidnapped and will be used as leverage. The author likes to venture out and write new stories. His last book, Darkness of Evil, and his next book will delve into serial killers. “As a writer, I want to keep fresh and different. I want to challenge my characters and myself to acclimate to new environments. Karen Vail has been to Paris, England, and Spain maneuvering through the different cultures, places, laws, and law enforcement. I think this current book about moon elements is extremely relevant. Space can help with our military readiness that includes determining logistics. We need to maintain our superiority in space and should applaud our President’s efforts to reinvigorate our space program. We need a moon base to collect natural resources and use it as a spring board to get to another planet.” Space is coming to the forefront once again. This believable story shows the importance of America keeping its space superiority. It also highlights how Karen Vail must maneuver through lies, betrayals, and disloyalties to find the culprits.

Brendan Greene bukanlah seorang designer/programmer permainan tetapi adalah seorang jurukamera dan pereka laman web dari Ireland.




Permainan 'Arma' dan 'DayZ' adalah permainan ciptaannya selepas kembali dari Brazil.

Greene ingin mencipta satu permainan di mana pemain dapat melepaskan 'kebebasan' dan 'ketamakan' untuk melakukan sesuatu apabila diberikan peluang untuk meneruskan hidup apabila berperang.

HACKEO EN AVIACIÓN: DONDE ESTÁ EL RIESGO VERDADERO EN LA ACTUALIDAD

Hay una preocupación seria que esta creciendo acerca de la teoría que alguien podría hackear un avión. La razón es porque se puede visualizar fácilmente las acciones y efectos: una persona consigue entrar en algún sistema de un avión, saltar un sistema de control y lograr manejar la altura y dirección de la nave. Lo que es menos presiente es que ese no es el mayor riesgo hoy en aviación. 

Como siempre, deberíamos tener una preocupación con la posibilidad de hackear e infiltrar todo. Con la explosión de IOT en nuestras vidas, la preocupación debe ir de los refrigeradores, a sistemas de computo, a coches y aviones. En nuestra sociedad, desarrollamos productos, aplicaciones, y servicios pensando en que tan rápido podemos hacerlos llegar al mercado. No pensamos en desarrollar cosas seguras contra ataque cibernéticos. No hay ningún producto o aplicación que haya sido desarrollado de manera 100% segura. 

Pero en rangos de importancia, la posibilidad de hackear un avión es infinitamente mas preocupante que infiltrar una empresa a través de una impresora. Esta preocupación aumento mucho después de que una persona en seguridad, hace dos años, Chris Roberts, indico públicamente que logro hackear un avión a través de su sistema de entretenimiento. El dijo que consiguió hacer que el avión cambie de posición, mientras volaba. Después de investigaciones detalladas por el FBI, Boeing y otros expertos, la conclusión de todos fue que era mas un cuento de Hadas que algo verídico. 

En realidad, los aviones nuevos son miles de veces mas técnicos que antes, con mas sistemas conectados por satélite a Internet, WiFi interno, sistemas de entretenimiento y funciones internas del avión en red privada. Todo esto resulta en teorías de que se puede hackear un avión. Pero es mas teoría que realidad. Hay varios artículos y bastante documentación que se puede encontrar en Internet detallando que es casi imposible hackear un avión, arriesgando la vida de cienes de personas. Además, Airbus y Boeing tienen programas extremadamente rigorosos de seguridad. Otra razón de porque los sistemas están separados. También, las empresas que fabrican sistemas de los aviones como los de entretenimiento. No es decir que es 100% imposible, como mencione en un párrafo anterior, con las múltiples conexiones GPS, satélites y sistemas internos. Quien sabe que paso realmente con el vuelo 370 de Malaysia Airlines? 

Pero, lo que si tenemos que entender y concientizarnos en es que hay mucho riesgo en aviación, particularmente en entornos complementarios a los aviones. 

Las aerolíneas tienen una superficie grande para proteger. Los riesgos actuales se encuentran en sus sistemas operacionales, incluyendo los billetes, reservas, sistemas de pago y sistemas de lealtad. Todas las aerolíneas están expuestas a las mismas amenazas criminales que otras empresas, como tiendas o bancos. Estos segmentos de nuestra industria procesan mucha información personal, incluyendo tarjetas de crédito, direcciones físicas, información de VIP’s, y números de cuenta de lealtad. 

FireEye ha observado intrusiones en la industria de aviación, incluyendo aerolíneas, organizaciones gubernamentales, fabricantes de aviones, los que manufacturan componentes y piezas para los aviones. Nuestro equipo de respuesta de incidentes ha detectado 27 grupos de APT’s activos en la industria de aviación. 20 de ellos han sido grupos que provienen de China. Esto si es un riesgo, pero también porque la cantidad de intrusiones exitosas ha sido extremadamente alta. 

Durante un periodo de seis meses en el 2016, FireEye hizo 13 investigaciones. Descubrimos que 75% tenían malware en su entorno que no había sido detectado. 30% tenían atacantes que estaban en control de sus computadoras. En nuestras investigaciones el año pasado del sector de aviación, descubrimos información robada como: documentos personales, directorios de compañías de aviación, diseños, comunicaciones, información personal, propuestas financieras, información propietaria, y mas. En algunos casos, los maliciosos atacaron la parte de información del negocio, queriendo entender el presupuesto de una empresa y sus planes para el futuro. 

La industria de aviación es extremadamente competitiva. Existe mucha competencia, con nuevos diseños y planes para el futuro, técnicas de manufactura. Esto representa miles de millones de dólares en beneficios. En FireEye, hemos detectado ciber-espionaje y ganancias monetarias como las causas principales de los ataques contra empresas que fabrican partes para aviones, para conseguir diseños para nuevos aviones, documentación operacional y otras cosas sensibles. 

El ataque del 2011 contra RSA señalizo solo el inicio de ataques similares que ocurrieron contra Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, y L-3 Communications. Todas estas empresas tienen muchos contratos en el sector de aviación. Por ejemplo, se descubrió que se robaron los detalles de los sistemas de radar, diseño de motores, sistemas de identificación de amenazas físicas del F-35. En el 2013, FireEye observó un ataque contra una de las empresas que fabrican motores. Lograron robar información acerca de sus procesos de producción y como fabricar plásticos avanzados. 

También, FireEye ha observado ataques serios contra sistemas de reserva y billetes. Esto es el corazón de una aerolínea - lo que representa sus ingresos. En este "mercado" es donde las aerolíneas venden sus asientos y por ende contiene mucha información acerca de personas, sus planes de viaje, nombres, números de tarjeta de crédito, etc. En 2016, detectamos un grupo llamado APT4 por FireEye, basado en China, quienes escribieron emails muy sofisticados de spear-phishing para conseguir acceso a una aerolínea en Asia. APT4 ha atacado este sector desde al menos el 2007, usando variantes del malware Sykipot. También robaron propiedad intelectual e información operacional. 

También existe un riesgo en los aeropuertos. FireEye ha detectado información que hactivistas han sido activos contra varios aeropuertos. Hactivistas podrían afectar cosas menos complicadas como cambiar una pagina web. O podrían hacer algo mas impactante como tumbar la pagina web. Estas acciones han sido el resultado de ataques de malware y DDOS. Lo que si representa mayor riesgo en los aeropuertos, son los sistemas de operación de seguridad. Este grupo vigilia la gente, acceso a áreas restringidas, infraestructura física y vigilancia. Ataques contra estos sistemas podría causar problemas graves para la operación de seguridad en los aeropuertos. 

El riesgo principal hoy de seguridad no son los aviones, sino el entorno complementario a los aviones. Esto incluyen los que fabrican partes y 

componentes para los aviones, aerolíneas y aeropuertos. Buscan información para robar que podrían beneficiar a un competidor, como sistemas de diseños, presupuestos e información confidencial. También, quieren alterar programas de lealtad. Los maliciosos son muy activos en este sector. Pero decir que hoy teóricamente se puede tumbar avión por un hackeo es demostrar que no estamos prestando atención a la amenazas reales en aviación.

Những năm gần đây công nghệ quân sự hiện đại đang hướng đến các phương pháp khác nhau về sử dụng động cơ phản lực dòng thẳng (Ramjet Engine). Đạn pháo động cơ phản lực dòng thẳng là một trong những phương án được sử dụng đầy hứa hẹn.

Khái niệm về đạn phản lực đã được biết đến từ lâu. Vận tốc ban đầu của đạn tạo nên nhờ thuốc phóng từ nòng pháo, sau khi bay ra khỏi đầu nòng, trên quỹ đạo lúc này động cơ phản lực sẽ hoạt động nhằm tăng tốc cho đạn và từ đó giúp đạn đạt được tầm xa lớn hơn. Tuy nhiên ngay các khi các vấn đề về kết cấu – kỹ thuật được giải quyết thành công thì quy mô sử dụng đạn phản lực vẫn không được phát triển. Tuy nhiên theo chu kỳ, việc quan tâm đến loại đạn này hiện đang trở thành một “làn sóng” mới.

Hải quân Hoa Kỳ về phát triển đạn phản lực có dẫn đường EX171 với tầm bắn đến 115km.

Một trong nỗ lực được biết đến nhiều nhất là chương trình đầy tham vọng ERGM (Extended Range Guided Munition) của lực lượng Hải quân Hoa Kỳ về phát triển đạn phản lực có dẫn đường EX171 với tầm bắn đến 115km từ vũ khí 127mm gắn trên chiến hạm. Sau 12 năm phát triển và tiêu tốn 600 triệu USD thì tháng 3 năm 2008 hạm đội Hoa Kỳ đã dừng việc phát triển tiếp chương trình này. Không ai nghi ngờ về loại đạn phản lực này, tuy nhiên chi phí cho một phát bắn lên tới 35 000 USD khi sản xuất loạt đã vượt ra ngoài tưởng tượng và giới hạn hợp lý.

Số phận tương tự cũng xảy ra năm 2016 trong việc phát triển đạn phản lực LRLAP (Long Range Land Attack Projectile) cho pháo 155 mm AGS (Advanced Gun System) trên tàu khu trục DDG 1000 Zumwakt với tầm bắn đến 185km – Lô đạn pháo 2000 quả từ công ty Lockheed Martin/BEA Systems lên tới 1,8-2,0 tỉ USD, có nghĩa là khoảng 1 triệu USD cho 1 phát bắn.

Tuy nhiên, công ty Raufoss đã quyết định 1 lần nữa thử vận may bằng cách đề xuất loại đạn phản lực tầm bắn giới hạn cho đạn 155mm bằng cách sử dụng động cơ phản lực khí dòng thẳng, loại mà sẽ được phóng khi đốt cháy nhiên liệu từ không khí nén sau khi tốc độ đạt tới 2,5 M (nghĩa là được bắn từ pháo có chiều dài 52 lần cỡ nòng).

Trước đây các thử nghiệm được tiến hành đều sử dụng động cơ phản lực nhiên liệu rắn, có nghĩa là đạn khi bắn sẽ mang theo cả nhiên liệu và cả chất oxy hóa.

          China Just Tested A Hypersonic Missile The US Can't Defend Against      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache   

China claims to have successfully tested a new hypersonic missile that would be capable of penetrating any missile defense system in the world.

The Starry Sky-2, which is an experimental design known as “waverider,” rides the shock waves generated during flight. The missile could one day carry conventional and or nuclear warheads undetected through US missile defense shields.

According to the China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics (CAAA), an aerodynamic research institution in Beijing and part of the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASTC), conducted the hypersonic missile test in northwestern China last Friday.

The CAAA released a statement issued on Monday, indicating the Starry Sky-2 was carried into space by a solid-propellant rocket before separating.

After separation, it descended to lower altitudes as it autonomously conducted extreme turning manoeuvers, reaching Mach 5.5 for more than 400 seconds, and reached a top speed of Mach 6, or 7,344km/h (4,563mph), the CAAA WeChat statement said.

The test was deemed a “complete success,” stated CAAA, which posted a series of behind the scenes images of the experiment on social media. “The Starry Sky-2 flight test project was strongly innovative and technically difficult, confronting a number of cutting-edge international technical challenges.”

However, the CAAA did not mention what the intended purpose of the missile would be used for, other than commenting on how hypersonic technologies could further China’s aerospace industry.

Although, the missile is still in the development stage and probably a few years out from series production, waveriders could be used to carry conventional and or nuclear warheads capable of penetrating the world’s most advanced anti-missile defense systems.

Earlier this year, Gen. John Hyten, commander of U.S. Strategic Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that the US is extremely vulnerable to future attack via hypersonic missiles.

“The first, most important message I want to deliver today is that the forces under my command are fully ready to deter our adversaries and respond decisively, should deterrence ever fail. We are ready for all threats. No one should doubt this,” Gen. Hyten said in his opening statement.

However, in a follow-on conversation with Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Oklahoma, Hyten cautioned:

“we [US] don’t have any defense that could deny the employment of such a weapon [hypersonic missiles] against us.”

Hyten suggested the US is powerless against hypersonic weapon threats and has to rely on nuclear deterrence.

Hyten added, “so our response would be our deterrent force which would be the triad and the nuclear capabilities that we have to respond to such a threat.”

In mid-April, Lockheed Martin announced that it had won a $928 million contract to develop a hypersonic missile for the Air Force to counter Chinese and Russian missile defense systems.

During the recent discussion at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) in Washington, D.C., Gen. Paul Selva, vice-chairman of the Joint Chiefs, said China has yet to “mass deploy hypersonics or long-range [tactical] ballistic missiles,” however, “they are able now to deploy those capabilities at a large scale” if they decide to move in that direction, he added.

Gen. Selva then dropped a bombshell indicating the Pentagon is behind in the demonstration of hypersonic technologies, but he did mention that the Pentagon still holds an advantage when it comes to sensor and sensor-integration technologies.

“If we just sit back and don’t react we will lose our technological superiority” over China, Selva said.

Beijing-based military analyst Zhou Chenming told the South China Morning Post that Starry Sky-2 would be used for carrying conventional warheads rather than nuclear ones, adding that such a capability was not in the immediate future.

“I think there are still three to five years before this technology can be weaponized,” he said. “As well as being fitted to missiles, it may also have other military applications, which are still being explored.”

The Starry Sky-2 is not China’s first rodeo operating in the hypersonic space — it has been testing hypersonic missiles since 2014, but the latest test is the first to make use of waverider technology.

Mike Griffin, a former Nasa administrator and now the Pentagon’s defense undersecretary for research and engineering, warned earlier this year that China had built “a pretty mature system” for a hypersonic missile to strike from thousands of miles away.

To sum up, this is it – the dying American empire is behind the hypersonic technology curve, as it may suggest: The US could lose its military technological superiority to China sometime in the mid/late 2020s, if it does not properly allocate enough investments into hypersonic technologies.

We then ask the question: What comes next if Washington’s power slips in the Pacific? Well, you guessed it... War.

Today’s Doodle celebrates the 110th birthday of Mary G. Ross, the first American Indian female engineer, whose major contributions to the aerospace industry include the development of concepts for interplanetary space travel, manned and unmanned earth-orbiting flights, and orbiting satellites.

Great-great granddaughter to Chief John Ross of the Cherokee Nation, Ross was born on this day in 1917. Her math skills were surpassed only by her passion for aviation and the sciences. After teaching in Oklahoma for 9 years, she attended the University of Northern Colorado to pursue her master’s degree and love for astronomy and rocket science.

During World War II, Ross was hired by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation as a mathematician. It was there that she was encouraged to earn her professional certification in aeronautical engineering from UCLA in 1949, after which she broke new ground as one of the 40 founding members of the top-secret Skunk Works team. Her work on the team included developing initial design concepts for interplanetary space travel (including flyby missions to Venus and Mars) and satellites including the Agena rocket (depicted in today’s Doodle). "Often at night there were four of us working until 11 p.m.," she later recounted. "I was the pencil pusher, doing a lot of research. My state of the art tools were a slide rule and a Frieden computer. We were taking the theoretical and making it real."

Leading by example, Ross also opened doors for future generations of women and American Indians by participating in efforts to encourage their pursuits in STEM fields, including being a member and Fellow of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). In 1992 the SWE  established a scholarship in Ross’s name, which aims to support future female engineers and technologists, including Aditi Jain, a current Google Maps engineer.  “More than money, it gave me confidence,” says Jain who earned a degree in Math and Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University “I don’t think I considered myself an engineer until I received the scholarship.”

Here’s to Mary G. Ross, a pioneer who reached for the stars and whose legacy continues to inspire others to do the same.

          China Just Tested A Hypersonic Missile The US Can't Defend Against      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache   

China claims to have successfully tested a new hypersonic missile that would be capable of penetrating any missile defense system in the world.

The Starry Sky-2, which is an experimental design known as “waverider,” rides the shock waves generated during flight. The missile could one day carry conventional and or nuclear warheads undetected through US missile defense shields.

According to the China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics (CAAA), an aerodynamic research institution in Beijing and part of the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASTC), conducted the hypersonic missile test in northwestern China last Friday.

The CAAA released a statement issued on Monday, indicating the Starry Sky-2 was carried into space by a solid-propellant rocket before separating.

After separation, it descended to lower altitudes as it autonomously conducted extreme turning manoeuvers, reaching Mach 5.5 for more than 400 seconds, and reached a top speed of Mach 6, or 7,344km/h (4,563mph), the CAAA WeChat statement said.

The test was deemed a “complete success,” stated CAAA, which posted a series of behind the scenes images of the experiment on social media. “The Starry Sky-2 flight test project was strongly innovative and technically difficult, confronting a number of cutting-edge international technical challenges.”

However, the CAAA did not mention what the intended purpose of the missile would be used for, other than commenting on how hypersonic technologies could further China’s aerospace industry.

Although, the missile is still in the development stage and probably a few years out from series production, waveriders could be used to carry conventional and or nuclear warheads capable of penetrating the world’s most advanced anti-missile defense systems.

Earlier this year, Gen. John Hyten, commander of U.S. Strategic Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that the US is extremely vulnerable to future attack via hypersonic missiles.

“The first, most important message I want to deliver today is that the forces under my command are fully ready to deter our adversaries and respond decisively, should deterrence ever fail. We are ready for all threats. No one should doubt this,” Gen. Hyten said in his opening statement.

However, in a follow-on conversation with Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Oklahoma, Hyten cautioned:

“we [US] don’t have any defense that could deny the employment of such a weapon [hypersonic missiles] against us.”

Hyten suggested the US is powerless against hypersonic weapon threats and has to rely on nuclear deterrence.

Hyten added, “so our response would be our deterrent force which would be the triad and the nuclear capabilities that we have to respond to such a threat.”

In mid-April, Lockheed Martin announced that it had won a $928 million contract to develop a hypersonic missile for the Air Force to counter Chinese and Russian missile defense systems.

During the recent discussion at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) in Washington, D.C., Gen. Paul Selva, vice-chairman of the Joint Chiefs, said China has yet to “mass deploy hypersonics or long-range [tactical] ballistic missiles,” however, “they are able now to deploy those capabilities at a large scale” if they decide to move in that direction, he added.

Gen. Selva then dropped a bombshell indicating the Pentagon is behind in the demonstration of hypersonic technologies, but he did mention that the Pentagon still holds an advantage when it comes to sensor and sensor-integration technologies.

“If we just sit back and don’t react we will lose our technological superiority” over China, Selva said.

Beijing-based military analyst Zhou Chenming told the South China Morning Post that Starry Sky-2 would be used for carrying conventional warheads rather than nuclear ones, adding that such a capability was not in the immediate future.

“I think there are still three to five years before this technology can be weaponized,” he said. “As well as being fitted to missiles, it may also have other military applications, which are still being explored.”

The Starry Sky-2 is not China’s first rodeo operating in the hypersonic space — it has been testing hypersonic missiles since 2014, but the latest test is the first to make use of waverider technology.

Mike Griffin, a former Nasa administrator and now the Pentagon’s defense undersecretary for research and engineering, warned earlier this year that China had built “a pretty mature system” for a hypersonic missile to strike from thousands of miles away.

To sum up, this is it – the dying American empire is behind the hypersonic technology curve, as it may suggest: The US could lose its military technological superiority to China sometime in the mid/late 2020s, if it does not properly allocate enough investments into hypersonic technologies.

We then ask the question: What comes next if Washington’s power slips in the Pacific? Well, you guessed it... War.

          Russia Condemns New "Draconian" Sanctions, Weighs Banning Rocket Engines To US      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache   

A furious Russia condemned a new round of U.S. sanctions as "draconian" on Thursday and threatened to retaliate as news of the measures sent the ruble tumbling to two-year lows and sparked a wider asset sell-off over fears that Moscow was locked in a spiral of never-ending sanctions.

“Such measures are absolutely unfriendly and can hardly be associated with the constructive - difficult but constructive - atmosphere at the last meeting of the two presidents,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on a conference call.

As reported yesterday, in the latest diplomatic attack launched by Trump, the U.S. State Department said on Wednesday it would impose fresh sanctions by the month’s end after determining that Moscow had used a nerve agent against a former Russian double agent, Sergei Skripal, and his daughter, Yulia, in Britain, something Moscow denies. The latest sanction announcement came just days after a bipartisan group of senators proposed a law mandating “crushing sanctions” - including on purchase of new sovereign debt and on big state banks - to punish Russia for election interference.

As NBC first reported, the new sanctions would come in two tranches:

  • The first, which targets U.S. exports of sensitive national-security related goods, comes with deep exemptions and many of the items it covers have already been banned by previous restrictions.
  • The second and more serious tranche, activated after 90 days if Moscow fails to provide “reliable assurances” it will no longer use chemical weapons and allow on-site inspections by the United Nations or other international observer groups, could include downgrading diplomatic relations, suspending the state airline Aeroflot’s ability to fly to the United States and cutting off nearly all exports and imports.

The added sanctions could include a downgrading in diplomatic relations, blanket bans on the import of Russian oil and exports of “all other goods and technology” aside from agricultural products, as well as limits on loans from U.S. banks. The U.S. also would have to suspend aviation agreements and oppose any multilateral development bank assistance.

Russia’s embassy in the United States responded to the diplomatic escalation, calling the new U.S. sanctions "draconian" and said the reason for the new restrictions, allegations it had poisoned the Skripals in Britain, was fabricated and far-fetched, and said Washington’s "findings" against it in the Skripal case were not backed by evidence.

“On August 8, 2018 our Deputy Chief of Mission was informed in the State Department of new ‘draconian’ sanctions against Russia for far-fetched accusations of using the ‘Novichok’ nerve agent against a UK citizen,” the embassy said in a statement.

“We have grown accustomed to not hearing any facts or evidence.”

Russia’s defiant response stopped short of specific measures pending more details on the U.S. plans, although officials said Russia may also respond by imposing restrictions on trade with the U.S. under a law passed earlier this year in response to an earlier wave of penalties. RIA Novosti reported the Russia may respond to new U.S. sanctions by banning supplies of RD-180 rocket engines. As a reminder, RD-180 engines, produced by Russia’s NPO Energomash, are used in Atlas V rockets of space contractor United Launch Alliance LLC, a partnership between Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin Corp.

“The law allows the government to take retaliatory measures that are appropriate to the sanctions pressure,” said Dmitry Mezentsev, chairman of the economic policy committee in the upper house of parliament. “The Russian economy is big and stable enough that we aren’t scared by steps like this.”

Konstantin Kosachyov, chairman of the international affairs committee in the upper house of parliament, said imposition of the new limits would amount to "the behavior of a police state."

The news which came shortly after more details were revealed about an earlier set of proposed U.S. sanctions, sent Russian assets reeling and the ruble as low as 66.712 against the dollar, a fresh two-year low, and a 3-day drop of nearly 4%, and pushed stocks like Aeroflot and VTB, which could be targeted by some of the new restrictions, down as much as 6%.

The move also triggered a sell-off in Russian government bonds and the dollar-denominated RTS index fell to its lowest since April 11.

"It is clear that major sanctions actions are looming against Russia now either by the Administration, by Congress or both,” Tim Ash, a senior emerging-market strategist at Bluebay Asset Management LLC in London, said. “All bets are off."

Dmitri Trenin, director of the Carnegie Moscow Center and a former colonel in the Russian army, said the State Department’s move looked like the latest salvo in what he called a hybrid war. “Sanctions are the U.S. weapon of choice,” Trenin wrote on Twitter. “They are not an instrument, but the policy itself. Russia will have to brace for more to come over next several years, prepare for the worst and push back where it can.”

There is still a possibility to avoid a full blown diplomatic war: the additional sanctions also could be averted if Trump declared that waiving them would be in the U.S. national interest, however that would be a politically risky move in light of criticism that he’s been too soft on Russia on issues including interference in the 2016 presidential campaign.

"I don’t see a face-saving solution here,” said Vladimir Frolov, a foreign-policy analyst in Moscow and a former Russian diplomat.

Which, considering Trump's growing concerns about the upcoming conclusion of the Mueller probe of Russian collusion/interference, may be precisely the reason why the US president is so eager to appear as a stern enemy of Putin. And in the context of this escalating diplomatic feud, one wonders just what Trump really told Putin in that letter that Rand Paul delivered to the Russian president a few days ago.

Bowing to congressional pressure, the Trump administration has announced new sanctions to punish Russia for a nerve agent attack in the U.K. on former spy Sergei Skripal.

In a brief statement, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said the U.S. had determined this week that Russia used the nerve agent Novichok to poison Skripal and his daughter Yulia in March "in violation of international law" – a move that triggers sanctions under the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991.

The law requires the president to terminate arms sales, deny U.S. credit and prohibit the export of sensitive technology to any country using chemical or biological weapons.

The Associated Press, citing an unnamed State Department official, says that sanctions "include the presumed denial of export licenses for Russia to purchase many items with national security implications."

However, the department says it will exempt aid to civil society and humanitarian groups and allow exports needed for continued U.S.-Russia cooperation in space.

Nauert said the sanctions would begin on Aug. 22. They are expected to affect several hundred million dollars in bilateral trade.

Russia, which has repeatedly denied being involved in the attacks, responded Thursday by calling the new U.S. sanctions "draconian" and rebuffed again the "far-fetched accusations" that it had used Novichok against the Skripals.

Russian lawmaker Leonid Slutsky said that Moscow could retaliate by restricting exports of RD-180 rocket engines to the U.S. The super-efficient RD-180s, originally designed for the Soviet Energia heavy-lift launch vehicle, are currently used in the first stage of the U.S. Atlas V rocket, manufactured by United Launch Alliance, a consortium of Lockheed Martin and Boeing.

Russia made a similar threat to cut off the rocket engines after the Obama administration imposed sanctions in the aftermath of Moscow's annexation of Crimea.

Wednesday's announcement from Washington comes less than a month after a summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki that has sparked concern among both Democrats and Republicans over the president's reluctance to hold the Kremlin to account for interfering in U.S. elections.

It also follows a letter addressed to the president late last month by the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Ed Royce, R-CA, insisting that Russia be punished under the act. Royce and other lawmakers have accused the administration of dragging its feet on making Wednesday's determination.

Speaking after the State Department announcement, Royce said the administration was "rightly acting to uphold international bans on the use of chemical weapons."

"The mandatory sanctions that follow this determination are key to increasing pressure on Russia," Royce said. "Vladimir Putin must know that we will not tolerate his deadly acts, or his ongoing attacks on our democratic process."

Skripal was a double agent, working for years with Russian intelligence while secretly passing information to British authorities. He was convicted of espionage in Russia but released in a 2010 prisoner exchange and has lived in the U.K. since then.

In early March, he and Yulia, who was visiting from Russia, were found comatose on a bench in Salisbury, Wiltshire, in southern England. British authorities later determined they had been poisoned with Novichok, a nerve agent developed in Russia during the Cold War.

After extensive medical treatment, both have been released from hospital.

Last month, a British couple – Dawn Sturgess and Charlie Rowley – came in contact with Novichok in the same general area where the Skripals were poisoned. Sturgess later died. Authorities believe that the couple was exposed to Novichok that had been discarded following the March attack.

They were supposed to be cheaper, safer, and quicker to get up and running once their permits were approved. But, a year ago, the owners shut down the two nukes they were building South Carolina, with the project less than 40 percent complete. Owners South Carolina Electric & Gas and Santee Cooper estimated that the $11.5 billion they had originally said the pair of reactors would cost when completed had ballooned to $25 billion. And they would not be finished until 2021-22, more than three years after their originally slated completion date. Now, Southern Co. and its utility subsidiary Georgia Power, who are building the other two nukes in Georgia, have added another $1.1 billion to the cost of the pair after having taken over the project when Westinghouse went bankrupt. Total cost for that project is now set at $27 billion. Even though the reactors won’t switch on for years, ratepayers are already coughing up more than $100 a year to pay for this “construction work in progress.”

Report says American elders are declaring bankruptcy three times as much as they used to: The Consumer Bankruptcy Project released its “Graying of U.S. Bankruptcy: Fallout from Life in a Risk Society,” which puts the blame on the ravaged societal safety net and policy changes that have left large numbers of older Americans with inadequate retirement savings and huge medical expenses. More than a third told researchers their bankruptcies were caused at least in part because they supported family members attending college by co-signing loans they now can’t pay back. Marc Stern, a lawyer in Seattle, told reporters: d“I never saw parents with student loans 20 or 30 years ago. When you are living on $2,000 a month and that includes Social Security—and you have rent and savings are minuscule—it is extremely difficult to recover from something like that.”

Today marks the 74th birthday of America’s wildfire prevention symbol: Smokey Bear. On Aug. 9, 1944, Smokey was officially created to be the face of what would become the longest running public service advertisement campaign in the United States. At the time, our country’s forestlands were facing an epidemic of raging wildfires caused by the carelessness of people. Ironically, these were often the same people who came to those natural areas to admire the wild beauty of the landscape, and the wildlife that lived there. The first Smokey Bear poster was released In October of 1944, and it featured a warm and friendly looking black bear urging people that “Care will prevent 9 out of 10 woods fires!”

Cherokee engineer finally gets some public recognition decades after her death: Mary Golda Ross, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and great-great-granddaughter of Chief John Ross who led the tribe during the forced removal of the “Trail of Tears” in the 1830s, is considered to be the first Native woman to work as an aerospace engineer. She is featured in the Google Doodle Thursday. Her niece told Oklahoma Today Magazine: “She was six feet tall but very quiet and unassuming. She did not demand anything. She just went in and did it in her very quiet way.” She first went to work after graduation for what is now called Lockheed Martin, not just as the first American Indian women aerospace engineer, but the only woman on the design team of cutting-edge aircraft and spacecraft. After retiring in 1983, she promoted organizations like the American Indian Science and Engineering Society. In 1992, the Society of Women Engineers set up a scholarship in Ross’s name, which supports women who want to become engineers.
