Burning Games Seeks Playtesters For CoreBall      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Game designers and developers can only get a game so far. Without some outside help, rules are never quite as clear as they could be, things don't always work quite as intended, and things can always use a bit of a touch-up. That means bringing in playtesters. And that's what Burning Games is doing now for their upcoming game, CoreBall. Sign-ups are happening now.

From the announcement:

ANNOUNCEMENT: we are looking for playtesters for our upcoming board game, CoreBall. It's a fast and slick sports game in which players fight for the control of the ball at high speeds around asteroids. We'd love to play the game with you and make it perfect before its Kickstarter launch (November 2018). Let me know in the comments or send me a PM!

The Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa-2 showed the surface of the asteroid Ryugu close-up. About two weeks ago, the space probe approached the asteroid six kilometers away, but the new images were received by the device from a distance of only 851 meters from the surface. The automatic interplanetary station Hayabusa-2 was launched into space in December 2014 and is […]

The Uninhabitable Earth
Famine, economic collapse, a sun that cooks us: What climate change could wreak — sooner than you think.

By David Wallace-Wells

In the jungles of Costa Rica, where humidity routinely tops 90 percent, simply moving around outside when it’s over 105 degrees Fahrenheit would be lethal. And the effect would be fast: Within a few hours, a human body would be cooked to death from both inside and out. Fossils by Heartless Machine

I. ‘Doomsday’
Peering beyond scientific reticence.

It is, I promise, worse than you think. If your anxiety about global warming is dominated by fears of sea-level rise, you are barely scratching the surface of what terrors are possible, even within the lifetime of a teenager today. And yet the swelling seas — and the cities they will drown — have so dominated the picture of global warming, and so overwhelmed our capacity for climate panic, that they have occluded our perception of other threats, many much closer at hand. Rising oceans are bad, in fact very bad; but fleeing the coastline will not be enough.

Indeed, absent a significant adjustment to how billions of humans conduct their lives, parts of the Earth will likely become close to uninhabitable, and other parts horrifically inhospitable, as soon as the end of this century.

Even when we train our eyes on climate change, we are unable to comprehend its scope. This past winter, a string of days 60 and 70 degrees warmer than normal baked the North Pole, melting the permafrost that encased Norway’s Svalbard seed vault — a global food bank nicknamed “Doomsday,” designed to ensure that our agriculture survives any catastrophe, and which appeared to have been flooded by climate change less than ten years after being built.

The Doomsday vault is fine, for now: The structure has been secured and the seeds are safe. But treating the episode as a parable of impending flooding missed the more important news. Until recently, permafrost was not a major concern of climate scientists, because, as the name suggests, it was soil that stayed permanently frozen. But Arctic permafrost contains 1.8 trillion tons of carbon, more than twice as much as is currently suspended in the Earth’s atmosphere. When it thaws and is released, that carbon may evaporate as methane, which is 34 times as powerful a greenhouse-gas warming blanket as carbon dioxide when judged on the timescale of a century; when judged on the timescale of two decades, it is 86 times as powerful. In other words, we have, trapped in Arctic permafrost, twice as much carbon as is currently wrecking the atmosphere of the planet, all of it scheduled to be released at a date that keeps getting moved up, partially in the form of a gas that multiplies its warming power 86 times over.

Maybe you know that already — there are alarming stories in the news every day, like those, last month, that seemed to suggest satellite data showed the globe warming since 1998 more than twice as fast as scientists had thought (in fact, the underlying story was considerably less alarming than the headlines). Or the news from Antarctica this past May, when a crack in an ice shelf grew 11 miles in six days, then kept going; the break now has just three miles to go — by the time you read this, it may already have met the open water, where it will drop into the sea one of the biggest icebergs ever, a process known poetically as “calving.”

Watch: How Climate Change Is Creating More Powerful Hurricanes

But no matter how well-informed you are, you are surely not alarmed enough. Over the past decades, our culture has gone apocalyptic with zombie movies and Mad Max dystopias, perhaps the collective result of displaced climate anxiety, and yet when it comes to contemplating real-world warming dangers, we suffer from an incredible failure of imagination. The reasons for that are many: the timid language of scientific probabilities, which the climatologist James Hansen once called “scientific reticence” in a paper chastising scientists for editing their own observations so conscientiously that they failed to communicate how dire the threat really was; the fact that the country is dominated by a group of technocrats who believe any problem can be solved and an opposing culture that doesn’t even see warming as a problem worth addressing; the way that climate denialism has made scientists even more cautious in offering speculative warnings; the simple speed of change and, also, its slowness, such that we are only seeing effects now of warming from decades past; our uncertainty about uncertainty, which the climate writer Naomi Oreskes in particular has suggested stops us from preparing as though anything worse than a median outcome were even possible; the way we assume climate change will hit hardest elsewhere, not everywhere; the smallness (two degrees) and largeness (1.8 trillion tons) and abstractness (400 parts per million) of the numbers; the discomfort of considering a problem that is very difficult, if not impossible, to solve; the altogether incomprehensible scale of that problem, which amounts to the prospect of our own annihilation; simple fear. But aversion arising from fear is a form of denial, too.

In between scientific reticence and science fiction is science itself. This article is the result of dozens of interviews and exchanges with climatologists and researchers in related fields and reflects hundreds of scientific papers on the subject of climate change. What follows is not a series of predictions of what will happen — that will be determined in large part by the much-less-certain science of human response. Instead, it is a portrait of our best understanding of where the planet is heading absent aggressive action. It is unlikely that all of these warming scenarios will be fully realized, largely because the devastation along the way will shake our complacency. But those scenarios, and not the present climate, are the baseline. In fact, they are our schedule.

The present tense of climate change — the destruction we’ve already baked into our future — is horrifying enough. Most people talk as if Miami and Bangladesh still have a chance of surviving; most of the scientists I spoke with assume we’ll lose them within the century, even if we stop burning fossil fuel in the next decade. Two degrees of warming used to be considered the threshold of catastrophe: tens of millions of climate refugees unleashed upon an unprepared world. Now two degrees is our goal, per the Paris climate accords, and experts give us only slim odds of hitting it. The U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issues serial reports, often called the “gold standard” of climate research; the most recent one projects us to hit four degrees of warming by the beginning of the next century, should we stay the present course. But that’s just a median projection. The upper end of the probability curve runs as high as eight degrees — and the authors still haven’t figured out how to deal with that permafrost melt. The IPCC reports also don’t fully account for the albedo effect (less ice means less reflected and more absorbed sunlight, hence more warming); more cloud cover (which traps heat); or the dieback of forests and other flora (which extract carbon from the atmosphere). Each of these promises to accelerate warming, and the history of the planet shows that temperature can shift as much as five degrees Celsius within thirteen years. The last time the planet was even four degrees warmer, Peter Brannen points out in The Ends of the World, his new history of the planet’s major extinction events, the oceans were hundreds of feet higher.*

The Earth has experienced five mass extinctions before the one we are living through now, each so complete a slate-wiping of the evolutionary record it functioned as a resetting of the planetary clock, and many climate scientists will tell you they are the best analog for the ecological future we are diving headlong into. Unless you are a teenager, you probably read in your high-school textbooks that these extinctions were the result of asteroids. In fact, all but the one that killed the dinosaurs were caused by climate change produced by greenhouse gas. The most notorious was 252 million years ago; it began when carbon warmed the planet by five degrees, accelerated when that warming triggered the release of methane in the Arctic, and ended with 97 percent of all life on Earth dead. We are currently adding carbon to the atmosphere at a considerably faster rate; by most estimates, at least ten times faster. The rate is accelerating. This is what Stephen Hawking had in mind when he said, this spring, that the species needs to colonize other planets in the next century to survive, and what drove Elon Musk, last month, to unveil his plans to build a Mars habitat in 40 to 100 years. These are nonspecialists, of course, and probably as inclined to irrational panic as you or I. But the many sober-minded scientists I interviewed over the past several months — the most credentialed and tenured in the field, few of them inclined to alarmism and many advisers to the IPCC who nevertheless criticize its conservatism — have quietly reached an apocalyptic conclusion, too: No plausible program of emissions reductions alone can prevent climate disaster.

Over the past few decades, the term “Anthropocene” has climbed out of academic discourse and into the popular imagination — a name given to the geologic era we live in now, and a way to signal that it is a new era, defined on the wall chart of deep history by human intervention. One problem with the term is that it implies a conquest of nature (and even echoes the biblical “dominion”). And however sanguine you might be about the proposition that we have already ravaged the natural world, which we surely have, it is another thing entirely to consider the possibility that we have only provoked it, engineering first in ignorance and then in denial a climate system that will now go to war with us for many centuries, perhaps until it destroys us. That is what Wallace Smith Broecker, the avuncular oceanographer who coined the term “global warming,” means when he calls the planet an “angry beast.” You could also go with “war machine.” Each day we arm it more.

II. Heat Death
The bahraining of New York.

Humans, like all mammals, are heat engines; surviving means having to continually cool off, like panting dogs. For that, the temperature needs to be low enough for the air to act as a kind of refrigerant, drawing heat off the skin so the engine can keep pumping. At seven degrees of warming, that would become impossible for large portions of the planet’s equatorial band, and especially the tropics, where humidity adds to the problem; in the jungles of Costa Rica, for instance, where humidity routinely tops 90 percent, simply moving around outside when it’s over 105 degrees Fahrenheit would be lethal. And the effect would be fast: Within a few hours, a human body would be cooked to death from both inside and out.

Climate-change skeptics point out that the planet has warmed and cooled many times before, but the climate window that has allowed for human life is very narrow, even by the standards of planetary history. At 11 or 12 degrees of warming, more than half the world’s population, as distributed today, would die of direct heat. Things almost certainly won’t get that hot this century, though models of unabated emissions do bring us that far eventually. This century, and especially in the tropics, the pain points will pinch much more quickly even than an increase of seven degrees. The key factor is something called wet-bulb temperature, which is a term of measurement as home-laboratory-kit as it sounds: the heat registered on a thermometer wrapped in a damp sock as it’s swung around in the air (since the moisture evaporates from a sock more quickly in dry air, this single number reflects both heat and humidity). At present, most regions reach a wet-bulb maximum of 26 or 27 degrees Celsius; the true red line for habitability is 35 degrees. What is called heat stress comes much sooner.

Michael Oppenheimer: Only 10 Percent Chance We Meet Paris Targets
Actually, we’re about there already. Since 1980, the planet has experienced a 50-fold increase in the number of places experiencing dangerous or extreme heat; a bigger increase is to come. The five warmest summers in Europe since 1500 have all occurred since 2002, and soon, the IPCC warns, simply being outdoors that time of year will be unhealthy for much of the globe. Even if we meet the Paris goals of two degrees warming, cities like Karachi and Kolkata will become close to uninhabitable, annually encountering deadly heat waves like those that crippled them in 2015. At four degrees, the deadly European heat wave of 2003, which killed as many as 2,000 people a day, will be a normal summer. At six, according to an assessment focused only on effects within the U.S. from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, summer labor of any kind would become impossible in the lower Mississippi Valley, and everybody in the country east of the Rockies would be under more heat stress than anyone, anywhere, in the world today. As Joseph Romm has put it in his authoritative primer Climate Change: What Everyone Needs to Know, heat stress in New York City would exceed that of present-day Bahrain, one of the planet’s hottest spots, and the temperature in Bahrain “would induce hyperthermia in even sleeping humans.” The high-end IPCC estimate, remember, is two degrees warmer still. By the end of the century, the World Bank has estimated, the coolest months in tropical South America, Africa, and the Pacific are likely to be warmer than the warmest months at the end of the 20th century. Air-conditioning can help but will ultimately only add to the carbon problem; plus, the climate-controlled malls of the Arab emirates aside, it is not remotely plausible to wholesale air-condition all the hottest parts of the world, many of them also the poorest. And indeed, the crisis will be most dramatic across the Middle East and Persian Gulf, where in 2015 the heat index registered temperatures as high as 163 degrees Fahrenheit. As soon as several decades from now, the hajj will become physically impossible for the 2 million Muslims who make the pilgrimage each year.

It is not just the hajj, and it is not just Mecca; heat is already killing us. In the sugarcane region of El Salvador, as much as one-fifth of the population has chronic kidney disease, including over a quarter of the men, the presumed result of dehydration from working the fields they were able to comfortably harvest as recently as two decades ago. With dialysis, which is expensive, those with kidney failure can expect to live five years; without it, life expectancy is in the weeks. Of course, heat stress promises to pummel us in places other than our kidneys, too. As I type that sentence, in the California desert in mid-June, it is 121 degrees outside my door. It is not a record high.

III. The End of Food
Praying for cornfields in the tundra.

Climates differ and plants vary, but the basic rule for staple cereal crops grown at optimal temperature is that for every degree of warming, yields decline by 10 percent. Some estimates run as high as 15 or even 17 percent. Which means that if the planet is five degrees warmer at the end of the century, we may have as many as 50 percent more people to feed and 50 percent less grain to give them. And proteins are worse: It takes 16 calories of grain to produce just a single calorie of hamburger meat, butchered from a cow that spent its life polluting the climate with methane farts.

Pollyannaish plant physiologists will point out that the cereal-crop math applies only to those regions already at peak growing temperature, and they are right — theoretically, a warmer climate will make it easier to grow corn in Greenland. But as the pathbreaking work by Rosamond Naylor and David Battisti has shown, the tropics are already too hot to efficiently grow grain, and those places where grain is produced today are already at optimal growing temperature — which means even a small warming will push them down the slope of declining productivity. And you can’t easily move croplands north a few hundred miles, because yields in places like remote Canada and Russia are limited by the quality of soil there; it takes many centuries for the planet to produce optimally fertile dirt.

Drought might be an even bigger problem than heat, with some of the world’s most arable land turning quickly to desert. Precipitation is notoriously hard to model, yet predictions for later this century are basically unanimous: unprecedented droughts nearly everywhere food is today produced. By 2080, without dramatic reductions in emissions, southern Europe will be in permanent extreme drought, much worse than the American dust bowl ever was. The same will be true in Iraq and Syria and much of the rest of the Middle East; some of the most densely populated parts of Australia, Africa, and South America; and the breadbasket regions of China. None of these places, which today supply much of the world’s food, will be reliable sources of any. As for the original dust bowl: The droughts in the American plains and Southwest would not just be worse than in the 1930s, a 2015 NASA study predicted, but worse than any droughts in a thousand years — and that includes those that struck between 1100 and 1300, which “dried up all the rivers East of the Sierra Nevada mountains” and may have been responsible for the death of the Anasazi civilization.

Remember, we do not live in a world without hunger as it is. Far from it: Most estimates put the number of undernourished at 800 million globally. In case you haven’t heard, this spring has already brought an unprecedented quadruple famine to Africa and the Middle East; the U.N. has warned that separate starvation events in Somalia, South Sudan, Nigeria, and Yemen could kill 20 million this year alone.

IV. Climate Plagues
What happens when the bubonic ice melts?

Rock, in the right spot, is a record of planetary history, eras as long as millions of years flattened by the forces of geological time into strata with amplitudes of just inches, or just an inch, or even less. Ice works that way, too, as a climate ledger, but it is also frozen history, some of which can be reanimated when unfrozen. There are now, trapped in Arctic ice, diseases that have not circulated in the air for millions of years — in some cases, since before humans were around to encounter them. Which means our immune systems would have no idea how to fight back when those prehistoric plagues emerge from the ice.

The Arctic also stores terrifying bugs from more recent times. In Alaska, already, researchers have discovered remnants of the 1918 flu that infected as many as 500 million and killed as many as 100 million — about 5 percent of the world’s population and almost six times as many as had died in the world war for which the pandemic served as a kind of gruesome capstone. As the BBC reported in May, scientists suspect smallpox and the bubonic plague are trapped in Siberian ice, too — an abridged history of devastating human sickness, left out like egg salad in the Arctic sun.

Experts caution that many of these organisms won’t actually survive the thaw and point to the fastidious lab conditions under which they have already reanimated several of them — the 32,000-year-old “extremophile” bacteria revived in 2005, an 8 million-year-old bug brought back to life in 2007, the 3.5 million–year–old one a Russian scientist self-injected just out of curiosity — to suggest that those are necessary conditions for the return of such ancient plagues. But already last year, a boy was killed and 20 others infected by anthrax released when retreating permafrost exposed the frozen carcass of a reindeer killed by the bacteria at least 75 years earlier; 2,000 present-day reindeer were infected, too, carrying and spreading the disease beyond the tundra.

What concerns epidemiologists more than ancient diseases are existing scourges relocated, rewired, or even re-evolved by warming. The first effect is geographical. Before the early-modern period, when adventuring sailboats accelerated the mixing of peoples and their bugs, human provinciality was a guard against pandemic. Today, even with globalization and the enormous intermingling of human populations, our ecosystems are mostly stable, and this functions as another limit, but global warming will scramble those ecosystems and help disease trespass those limits as surely as Cortés did. You don’t worry much about dengue or malaria if you are living in Maine or France. But as the tropics creep northward and mosquitoes migrate with them, you will. You didn’t much worry about Zika a couple of years ago, either.

As it happens, Zika may also be a good model of the second worrying effect — disease mutation. One reason you hadn’t heard about Zika until recently is that it had been trapped in Uganda; another is that it did not, until recently, appear to cause birth defects. Scientists still don’t entirely understand what happened, or what they missed. But there are things we do know for sure about how climate affects some diseases: Malaria, for instance, thrives in hotter regions not just because the mosquitoes that carry it do, too, but because for every degree increase in temperature, the parasite reproduces ten times faster. Which is one reason that the World Bank estimates that by 2050, 5.2 billion people will be reckoning with it.

V. Unbreathable Air
A rolling death smog that suffocates millions.

Our lungs need oxygen, but that is only a fraction of what we breathe. The fraction of carbon dioxide is growing: It just crossed 400 parts per million, and high-end estimates extrapolating from current trends suggest it will hit 1,000 ppm by 2100. At that concentration, compared to the air we breathe now, human cognitive ability declines by 21 percent.

Other stuff in the hotter air is even scarier, with small increases in pollution capable of shortening life spans by ten years. The warmer the planet gets, the more ozone forms, and by mid-century, Americans will likely suffer a 70 percent increase in unhealthy ozone smog, the National Center for Atmospheric Research has projected. By 2090, as many as 2 billion people globally will be breathing air above the WHO “safe” level; one paper last month showed that, among other effects, a pregnant mother’s exposure to ozone raises the child’s risk of autism (as much as tenfold, combined with other environmental factors). Which does make you think again about the autism epidemic in West Hollywood.

Already, more than 10,000 people die each day from the small particles emitted from fossil-fuel burning; each year, 339,000 people die from wildfire smoke, in part because climate change has extended forest-fire season (in the U.S., it’s increased by 78 days since 1970). By 2050, according to the U.S. Forest Service, wildfires will be twice as destructive as they are today; in some places, the area burned could grow fivefold. What worries people even more is the effect that would have on emissions, especially when the fires ravage forests arising out of peat. Peatland fires in Indonesia in 1997, for instance, added to the global CO2 release by up to 40 percent, and more burning only means more warming only means more burning. There is also the terrifying possibility that rain forests like the Amazon, which in 2010 suffered its second “hundred-year drought” in the space of five years, could dry out enough to become vulnerable to these kinds of devastating, rolling forest fires — which would not only expel enormous amounts of carbon into the atmosphere but also shrink the size of the forest. That is especially bad because the Amazon alone provides 20 percent of our oxygen.

Then there are the more familiar forms of pollution. In 2013, melting Arctic ice remodeled Asian weather patterns, depriving industrial China of the natural ventilation systems it had come to depend on, which blanketed much of the country’s north in an unbreathable smog. Literally unbreathable. A metric called the Air Quality Index categorizes the risks and tops out at the 301-to-500 range, warning of “serious aggravation of heart or lung disease and premature mortality in persons with cardiopulmonary disease and the elderly” and, for all others, “serious risk of respiratory effects”; at that level, “everyone should avoid all outdoor exertion.” The Chinese “airpocalypse” of 2013 peaked at what would have been an Air Quality Index of over 800. That year, smog was responsible for a third of all deaths in the country.

VI. Perpetual War
The violence baked into heat.

Climatologists are very careful when talking about Syria. They want you to know that while climate change did produce a drought that contributed to civil war, it is not exactly fair to saythat the conflict is the result of warming; next door, for instance, Lebanon suffered the same crop failures. But researchers like Marshall Burke and Solomon Hsiang have managed to quantify some of the non-obvious relationships between temperature and violence: For every half-degree of warming, they say, societies will see between a 10 and 20 percent increase in the likelihood of armed conflict. In climate science, nothing is simple, but the arithmetic is harrowing: A planet five degrees warmer would have at least half again as many wars as we do today. Overall, social conflict could more than double this century.

This is one reason that, as nearly every climate scientist I spoke to pointed out, the U.S. military is obsessed with climate change: The drowning of all American Navy bases by sea-level rise is trouble enough, but being the world’s policeman is quite a bit harder when the crime rate doubles. Of course, it’s not just Syria where climate has contributed to conflict. Some speculate that the elevated level of strife across the Middle East over the past generation reflects the pressures of global warming — a hypothesis all the more cruel considering that warming began accelerating when the industrialized world extracted and then burned the region’s oil.

What accounts for the relationship between climate and conflict? Some of it comes down to agriculture and economics; a lot has to do with forced migration, already at a record high, with at least 65 million displaced people wandering the planet right now. But there is also the simple fact of individual irritability. Heat increases municipal crime rates, and swearing on social media, and the likelihood that a major-league pitcher, coming to the mound after his teammate has been hit by a pitch, will hit an opposing batter in retaliation. And the arrival of air-conditioning in the developed world, in the middle of the past century, did little to solve the problem of the summer crime wave.

VII. Permanent Economic Collapse
Dismal capitalism in a half-poorer world.

The murmuring mantra of global neoliberalism, which prevailed between the end of the Cold War and the onset of the Great Recession, is that economic growth would save us from anything and everything.
But in the aftermath of the 2008 crash, a growing number of historians studying what they call “fossil capitalism” have begun to suggest that the entire history of swift economic growth, which began somewhat suddenly in the 18th century, is not the result of innovation or trade or the dynamics of global capitalism but simply our discovery of fossil fuels and all their raw power — a onetime injection of new “value” into a system that had previously been characterized by global subsistence living. Before fossil fuels, nobody lived better than their parents or grandparents or ancestors from 500 years before, except in the immediate aftermath of a great plague like the Black Death, which allowed the lucky survivors to gobble up the resources liberated by mass graves. After we’ve burned all the fossil fuels, these scholars suggest, perhaps we will return to a “steady state” global economy. Of course, that onetime injection has a devastating long-term cost: climate change.

The most exciting research on the economics of warming has also come from Hsiang and his colleagues, who are not historians of fossil capitalism but who offer some very bleak analysis of their own: Every degree Celsius of warming costs, on average, 1.2 percent of GDP (an enormous number, considering we count growth in the low single digits as “strong”). This is the sterling work in the field, and their median projection is for a 23 percent loss in per capita earning globally by the end of this century (resulting from changes in agriculture, crime, storms, energy, mortality, and labor).
Tracing the shape of the probability curve is even scarier: There is a 12 percent chance that climate change will reduce global output by more than 50 percent by 2100, they say, and a 51 percent chance that it lowers per capita GDP by 20 percent or more by then, unless emissions decline. By comparison, the Great Recession lowered global GDP by about 6 percent, in a onetime shock; Hsiang and his colleagues estimate a one-in-eight chance of an ongoing and irreversible effect by the end of the century that is eight times worse.

The scale of that economic devastation is hard to comprehend, but you can start by imagining what the world would look like today with an economy half as big, which would produce only half as much value, generating only half as much to offer the workers of the world. It makes the grounding of flights out of heat-stricken Phoenix last month seem like pathetically small economic potatoes. And, among other things, it makes the idea of postponing government action on reducing emissions and relying solely on growth and technology to solve the problem an absurd business calculation.
Every round-trip ticket on flights from New York to London, keep in mind, costs the Arctic three more square meters of ice.

VIII. Poisoned Oceans
Sulfide burps off the skeleton coast.

That the sea will become a killer is a given. Barring a radical reduction of emissions, we will see at least four feet of sea-level rise and possibly ten by the end of the century. A third of the world’s major cities are on the coast, not to mention its power plants, ports, navy bases, farmlands, fisheries, river deltas, marshlands, and rice-paddy empires, and even those above ten feet will flood much more easily, and much more regularly, if the water gets that high. At least 600 million people live within ten meters of sea level today.

But the drowning of those homelands is just the start. At present, more than a third of the world’s carbon is sucked up by the oceans — thank God, or else we’d have that much more warming already. But the result is what’s called “ocean acidification,” which, on its own, may add a half a degree to warming this century. It is also already burning through the planet’s water basins — you may remember these as the place where life arose in the first place. You have probably heard of “coral bleaching” — that is, coral dying — which is very bad news, because reefs support as much as a quarter of all marine life and supply food for half a billion people. Ocean acidification will fry fish populations directly, too, though scientists aren’t yet sure how to predict the effects on the stuff we haul out of the ocean to eat; they do know that in acid waters, oysters and mussels will struggle to grow their shells, and that when the pH of human blood drops as much as the oceans’ pH has over the past generation, it induces seizures, comas, and sudden death.

That isn’t all that ocean acidification can do. Carbon absorption can initiate a feedback loop in which underoxygenated waters breed different kinds of microbes that turn the water still more “anoxic,” first in deep ocean “dead zones,” then gradually up toward the surface. There, the small fish die out, unable to breathe, which means oxygen-eating bacteria thrive, and the feedback loop doubles back. This process, in which dead zones grow like cancers, choking off marine life and wiping out fisheries, is already quite advanced in parts of the Gulf of Mexico and just off Namibia, where hydrogen sulfide is bubbling out of the sea along a thousand-mile stretch of land known as the “Skeleton Coast.” The name originally referred to the detritus of the whaling industry, but today it’s more apt than ever. Hydrogen sulfide is so toxic that evolution has trained us to recognize the tiniest, safest traces of it, which is why our noses are so exquisitely skilled at registering flatulence. Hydrogen sulfide is also the thing that finally did us in that time 97 percent of all life on Earth died, once all the feedback loops had been triggered and the circulating jet streams of a warmed ocean ground to a halt — it’s the planet’s preferred gas for a natural holocaust. Gradually, the ocean’s dead zones spread, killing off marine species that had dominated the oceans for hundreds of millions of years, and the gas the inert waters gave off into the atmosphere poisoned everything on land. Plants, too. It was millions of years before the oceans recovered.

IX. The Great Filter
Our present eeriness cannot last.

So why can’t we see it? In his recent book-length essay The Great Derangement, the Indian novelist Amitav Ghosh wonders why global warming and natural disaster haven’t become major subjects of contemporary fiction — why we don’t seem able to imagine climate catastrophe, and why we haven’t yet had a spate of novels in the genre he basically imagines into half-existence and names “the environmental uncanny.” “Consider, for example, the stories that congeal around questions like, ‘Where were you when the Berlin Wall fell?’ or ‘Where were you on 9/11?’ ” he writes. “Will it ever be possible to ask, in the same vein, ‘Where were you at 400 ppm?’ or ‘Where were you when the Larsen B ice shelf broke up?’ ” His answer: Probably not, because the dilemmas and dramas of climate change are simply incompatible with the kinds of stories we tell ourselves about ourselves, especially in novels, which tend to emphasize the journey of an individual conscience rather than the poisonous miasma of social fate.

Surely this blindness will not last — the world we are about to inhabit will not permit it. In a six-degree-warmer world, the Earth’s ecosystem will boil with so many natural disasters that we will just start calling them “weather”: a constant swarm of out-of-control typhoons and tornadoes and floods and droughts, the planet assaulted regularly with climate events that not so long ago destroyed whole civilizations. The strongest hurricanes will come more often, and we’ll have to invent new categories with which to describe them; tornadoes will grow longer and wider and strike much more frequently, and hail rocks will quadruple in size. Humans used to watch the weather to prophesy the future; going forward, we will see in its wrath the vengeance of the past. Early naturalists talked often about “deep time” — the perception they had, contemplating the grandeur of this valley or that rock basin, of the profound slowness of nature. What lies in store for us is more like what the Victorian anthropologists identified as “dreamtime,” or “everywhen”: the semi-mythical experience, described by Aboriginal Australians, of encountering, in the present moment, an out-of-time past, when ancestors, heroes, and demigods crowded an epic stage. You can find it already watching footage of an iceberg collapsing into the sea — a feeling of history happening all at once.

It is. Many people perceive climate change as a sort of moral and economic debt, accumulated since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution and now come due after several centuries — a helpful perspective, in a way, since it is the carbon-burning processes that began in 18th-century England that lit the fuse of everything that followed. But more than half of the carbon humanity has exhaled into the atmosphere in its entire history has been emitted in just the past three decades; since the end of World War II, the figure is 85 percent. Which means that, in the length of a single generation, global warming has brought us to the brink of planetary catastrophe, and that the story of the industrial world’s kamikaze mission is also the story of a single lifetime. My father’s, for instance: born in 1938, among his first memories the news of Pearl Harbor and the mythic Air Force of the propaganda films that followed, films that doubled as advertisements for imperial-American industrial might; and among his last memories the coverage of the desperate signing of the Paris climate accords on cable news, ten weeks before he died of lung cancer last July. Or my mother’s: born in 1945, to German Jews fleeing the smokestacks through which their relatives were incinerated, now enjoying her 72nd year in an American commodity paradise, a paradise supported by the supply chains of an industrialized developing world. She has been smoking for 57 of those years, unfiltered.

Or the scientists’. Some of the men who first identified a changing climate (and given the generation, those who became famous were men) are still alive; a few are even still working. Wally Broecker is 84 years old and drives to work at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory across the Hudson every day from the Upper West Side. Like most of those who first raised the alarm, he believes that no amount of emissions reduction alone can meaningfully help avoid disaster. Instead, he puts his faith in carbon capture — untested technology to extract carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which Broecker estimates will cost at least several trillion dollars — and various forms of “geoengineering,” the catchall name for a variety of moon-shot technologies far-fetched enough that many climate scientists prefer to regard them as dreams, or nightmares, from science fiction. He is especially focused on what’s called the aerosol approach — dispersing so much sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere that when it converts to sulfuric acid, it will cloud a fifth of the horizon and reflect back 2 percent of the sun’s rays, buying the planet at least a little wiggle room, heat-wise. “Of course, that would make our sunsets very red, would bleach the sky, would make more acid rain,” he says. “But you have to look at the magnitude of the problem. You got to watch that you don’t say the giant problem shouldn’t be solved because the solution causes some smaller problems.” He won’t be around to see that, he told me. “But in your lifetime …”

Jim Hansen is another member of this godfather generation. Born in 1941, he became a climatologist at the University of Iowa, developed the groundbreaking “Zero Model” for projecting climate change, and later became the head of climate research at NASA, only to leave under pressure when, while still a federal employee, he filed a lawsuit against the federal government charging inaction on warming (along the way he got arrested a few times for protesting, too). The lawsuit, which is brought by a collective called Our Children’s Trust and is often described as “kids versus climate change,” is built on an appeal to the equal-protection clause, namely, that in failing to take action on warming, the government is violating it by imposing massive costs on future generations; it is scheduled to be heard this winter in Oregon district court. Hansen has recently given up on solving the climate problem with a carbon tax alone, which had been his preferred approach, and has set about calculating the total cost of the additional measure of extracting carbon from the atmosphere.

Climate Scientist James Hansen: ‘The Planet Could Become Ungovernable’
The 10-Book ‘Uninhabitable Earth’ Reading List
Hansen began his career studying Venus, which was once a very Earth-like planet with plenty of life-supporting water before runaway climate change rapidly transformed it into an arid and uninhabitable sphere enveloped in an unbreathable gas; he switched to studying our planet by 30, wondering why he should be squinting across the solar system to explore rapid environmental change when he could see it all around him on the planet he was standing on. “When we wrote our first paper on this, in 1981,” he told me, “I remember saying to one of my co-authors, ‘This is going to be very interesting. Sometime during our careers, we’re going to see these things beginning to happen.’ ”

Several of the scientists I spoke with proposed global warming as the solution to Fermi’s famous paradox, which asks, If the universe is so big, then why haven’t we encountered any other intelligent life in it? The answer, they suggested, is that the natural life span of a civilization may be only several thousand years, and the life span of an industrial civilization perhaps only several hundred. In a universe that is many billions of years old, with star systems separated as much by time as by space, civilizations might emerge and develop and burn themselves up simply too fast to ever find one another. Peter Ward, a charismatic paleontologist among those responsible for discovering that the planet’s mass extinctions were caused by greenhouse gas, calls this the “Great Filter”: “Civilizations rise, but there’s an environmental filter that causes them to die off again and disappear fairly quickly,” he told me. “If you look at planet Earth, the filtering we’ve had in the past has been in these mass extinctions.” The mass extinction we are now living through has only just begun; so much more dying is coming.

And yet, improbably, Ward is an optimist. So are Broecker and Hansen and many of the other scientists I spoke to. We have not developed much of a religion of meaning around climate change that might comfort us, or give us purpose, in the face of possible annihilation. But climate scientists have a strange kind of faith: We will find a way to forestall radical warming, they say, because we must.

It is not easy to know how much to be reassured by that bleak certainty, and how much to wonder whether it is another form of delusion; for global warming to work as parable, of course, someone needs to survive to tell the story. The scientists know that to even meet the Paris goals, by 2050, carbon emissions from energy and industry, which are still rising, will have to fall by half each decade; emissions from land use (deforestation, cow farts, etc.) will have to zero out; and we will need to have invented technologies to extract, annually, twice as much carbon from the atmosphere as the entire planet’s plants now do. Nevertheless, by and large, the scientists have an enormous confidence in the ingenuity of humans — a confidence perhaps bolstered by their appreciation for climate change, which is, after all, a human invention, too. They point to the Apollo project, the hole in the ozone we patched in the 1980s, the passing of the fear of mutually assured destruction. Now we’ve found a way to engineer our own doomsday, and surely we will find a way to engineer our way out of it, one way or another. The planet is not used to being provoked like this, and climate systems designed to give feedback over centuries or millennia prevent us — even those who may be watching closely — from fully imagining the damage done already to the planet. But when we do truly see the world we’ve made, they say, we will also find a way to make it livable. For them, the alternative is simply unimaginable.

*This article has been updated to provide context for the recent news reports about revisions to a satellite data set, to more accurately reflect the rate of warming during the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum, to clarify a reference to Peter Brannen’s The Ends of the World, and to make clear that James Hansen still supports a carbon-tax based approach to emissions.

Sistem pencernaan terdiri atas mulut, lentera Aristotle, esophagus, lambung, usus, anus.

Sistem reproduksi kelaminnya terpisah.

Facebook Messenger propone n gioco AR, altra ispirazione Snapchat

Facebook Messenger propone n gioco AR, altra ispirazione Snapchat

Oct 2018: Tail of the Dragon Smacks 2017 POTUS Sun!      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

On October 27, 2018 transit South Node ('Tail of the Dragon') 'smacks' the 2017 POTUS Sun 00AQ49:53 for just under 3 minutes from 6:50 am edt to 6:52:50 am edt. The horoscope below is set for Washington DC at the first minute of this conjunction; the transit may have no significance at all but is posted here for the sake of recording the cosmic event--and because of the tribulations of the Trump administration since he 'took office' at noon on January 20, 2017 at noon est with an isolated 10th house Sun that represents, since Inauguration Day 2017, thespian Donald Trump in the leadership role.

Obviously this particular nodal transit also occurred approximately 19 years ago while Bill Clinton was in office, his second term ending on January 20, 2001. Embroiled in legal, political, and personal battles, Mr. Clinton's White House experience resembles on a basic ethical level that of the embroiled Mr. Trump, as you know, and although SN to Sun is a cosmic event of brief duration, perhaps its Saturnian vibes of separation and lack of resonance with the public (or with the public mood or societal trends) returns in 2018 for the American people's further dealing in the inflated form of ethics-challenged Donald Trump. Both planet Saturn and the Nodes of the Moon are considered karmic (what was sown is reaped) and both play roles in the element which only Astrology can provide the seeker--timing.

DC Horoscope: October 27, 2018 6:50 am edt Washington DC; SN conjunct POTUS Sun 00AQ49:53;Trump natal positions are penned around the chart in blue; chart-ruler Venus Rx opposes Uranus Rx highlighted in green; 'The Tower' Solar Eclipse of August 11, 2018 is this karmic event's PE; its Syzygy Moon 1Tau13 perfects on October 24, 2018 conjunct planet of upsets and shocks, Uranus, here at 00Tau24; Venus-Uranus hints at financial improprieties, extravagance, devaluation of currency, and/or unusual sources of funding; in 2nd house, transit Mercury 25Sco12 has just entered Mr. Trump's natal 4th house (joining tr Jupiter) suggesting communications focused on domestic matters, family members, real estate, and potentially a 'change of residence' (not to get our hopes up!) if enough factors agree:

Now since it's America's POTUS Sun involved ('President of the United States'), the US presidency will be 'smacked' or 'swiped' in some way along with the man playing the archetypal role in October 2018; therefore, the Presidential Oath of Office will be involved. This brings Trump's affirmation to preserve, protect, and defend the US Constitution into this Saturnian picture with its 'separation' theme. Agreement that Mr. Trump is actually doing the required job in the required way is hard to find unless you look toward the morally bankrupt GOP and their billionaire enablers who are determined to re-write the US Constitution in unrecognizable ways. Plus, Trump's mesmerized supporters, who at this typing, remain devoted to his quirky, eccentric, chaotic Uranian way of doing things, tradition be da*ned. For after all, Trump's natal 10th house Uranus in mutable Gemini (sign of duplicity, variety, tweeting, and gossip) is his guiding planet because it rises just before his Gemini Sun (aka, 'oriental').

And if we look to a South Node/Sun conjunction in general for clues to what may be involved in late October, we find circumstances, conditions, and people continuing to block and limit Trump's self-expression, leadership, and power potential. Obstacles via others litter his path of achievement to the point that aims may be denied altogether. That Trump has and does promote his own selfish aims at the expense of others--aka, exploitation--complicates the situation for SN-to-Sun is a doubly karmic event in which current actions are thwarted by pipers who rightfully demand full payment. You've probably noticed how Mr. Trump has demonstrated an alarming lack of self-discipline and an inability to control his primal urges which do not sync with Saturn's requirements which can lead to positive outcomes and best results.

And of course, astrological Saturn is the taskmaster bringing lessons of limitation, restriction, and accountability (The Establishment in the form of Mr. Mueller?!) but as we know, Mr. Trump has shown himself to be learning disabled concerning most topics, and a know-it-all to boot. In fact, he has stated that he's never asked for forgiveness because he's never sinned or made a mistake--quite an unsullied 'god' he imagines himself to be! Perhaps having royal Regulus rising along with asteroid Apollo (the 'sun god') inspires such a misconception about himself as being superior to the rest of humanity. Yet in his role of US president, and allegedly accountable to the American people and to the laws of Saturn, it may soon be time for cosmic comeuppance for such hubris as that belonging to the very flawed Donald J. Trump.

Yūta Iridatsu is a pretty normal high school kid, with one exception: he faints if he sees girls’ panties. You never quite notice how frequent panty flashes can be until they ruin your day – he has to not look, or it’s lights out!

When he one day finds himself in the midst of a bus hijacking incident, he meets the famed vigilante crime fighter Strange Juice, and something unexpected happens to Yūta – his soul separates from his body. Stuck in a ghostly incorporeal form, he finds that his penchant for panties has disastrous consequences.

While a ghost form lends itself to panty sightings galore, allowing Yūta to wander unseen, looking up skirts and causing shenanigans, there’s a terrible catch: if he sees too many panties, Yūta gets too excited, faints, and somehow causes an asteroid to hit the Earth and destroy all life on the planet.

Able to travel back in time to before the destruction of the Earth, Yūta’s task is clear – solve this mystery! What happened to turn Yūta into a ghost? How can he time travel? Why does fainting at the sight of panties cause destruction of the world!?

Answers must be found! …right after checking out the panties on that girl over there.

Pensando no bem estar do filho, Chris decide lutar por um estágio na área financeira, disputando uma carreira ao final de um período de seis meses de treinamento, sem remuneração, com outros vinte candidatos.

ZOMBIE COMETS ARISING FROM COMET GRAVEYARD      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Comets which scientists assumed were “dead,” having melted and otherwise disintegrated in their long journeys around the Solar System, are coming back to life, their cores re-forming. They are not in the location where scientists had assumed their remains were, they are instead much closer to Earth in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It had been assumed that dead comets ended up in small bits and pieces of ice and rock, way out in the Oort Cloud in the outer fringe of the Solar System.

Click here to enlarge top left photo.

Colombian scientists have discovered these “Lazarus” comets, described in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. These icy space/time travelers represent a long-lost population of comets and may change scientists’ understanding of comet origins. Comets are typically a few miles across, have long held mystical power, stimulating human imagination.  As a comet travels around the sun, heat and light evaporate some of the ice inside the comet, causing its beautiful glowing tail of gas and dust.

Comets had been thought to be born near the fringes of the Solar System in the Oort Cloud “nursery.”  Some comets have orbits so elliptically extreme that they circle the sun only once in several thousand years; others have quicker round-trips of a several hundred years. However, recently astronomers started to spot strange, comet-like bodies popping up where they “should not be”— in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

These zombie comets which rejuvenate themselves behave like meteors but their orbits are those of asteroids! That’s surprising and unexpected. The main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter is filled with rocky debris from several feet to hundreds of miles long. These are the asteroids which could have been the building blocks of another planet, but Jupiter’s gravity keeps these fragments from coalescing. Scientists had assumed that if comet bits did end up in this area, they could not re-form themselves either. But apparently they are rejuvenating themselves, having only lied dormant. Remember that comets by definition are composed mostly of ice, and so they remain distinct from asteroids which are rocks.

Picture: Asteroid Belt Between Mars and Jupiter

It seems unlikely in terms of physics that these Lazarus comet bits and pieces could come back to “life,” in comet-form again. It is also strange that they have been lying dormant in a nearby graveyard rather than safely out in the Oort Belt. It is quite possible that Earth will witness many of these zombie-comets zooming past in the future – comets which are new to us because they have been “dead” for millions of years. They are not on the usual list of expected icy visitors!

PYRAMID STRUCTURES FOUND ON MARS AND CERES, PYRAMID OF GIZA HAS GALACTIC TWINS      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Pyramid is revered by many civilizations on Earth and maybe our galaxy

NASA’s Dawn satellite has been sending back some fascinating footage from Ceres a dwarf planet located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It picked up earlier footage of mysterious lights reflecting from Ceres. The planet is composed of ice, water, and mud which they believe is reflecting the lights. Yes folks, I said water one of the keys of life.

Click here to enlarge top photo.

Dawn orbiting at 2700 miles spotted an amazing pyramid shaped rock formation. It’s three miles high and taller than the Rocky Mountains. The image was taken on June 6.

Next, big news is Mars pyramid spotted by NASA’s Curiosity Rover. It’s been spotted on June 20 and is quite the mystery since it appears to look like some of our graveyard markers. The size of the pyramid is of a small car. I don’t know if you remember the cross formation seen on Curiosity’s footage which looked very similar to a graveyard or monument cross. I believe NASA is starting to pile more data of intelligent life possibilities especially when we have our own mysterious pyramids here on Earth. What a coincidence? Isn’t it amazing of all the formations recurring pyramids seen on two other planets which have water on them.

Pyramids have been found all over Earth and considered sacred by many civilizations who revere the stars. The Maya civilization and Egyptian civilizations built pyramid structures and considered them sacred. What a coincidence! Now on two different planets with water other such pyramids have been found. Is this evidence of an ancient race whose sacred symbol of the pyramid is planted on all viable planets for life.  A marker stone or territorial stone marking of an ancient civilization which Earth maybe part of.

The perfect shaped pyramid on Mars is very intriguing and NASA needs to wonder is this evidence of intelligent life. If it is then Earth’s history may take a new turn and ancient alien civilizations becomes a real possibility.

THE CORRELATION BETWEEN SUNSPOT ACTIVITY AND ET VISITS      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
We currently have at least three indications that 2016, and the years immediately following, have the potential to bring another chance for open Contact between extraterrestrials and humanity. If world governments don’t repeat the insane mistakes they made during the 1940’s and 1950’s – a big if – and we can get a grip on our rapidly declining geopolitical situation, the door may open again for humanity to meet at least some of the Visitors we know are out there.

Space Weather and ET Visitation

Recently, TOR posted links to information regarding 1991 VG, including Clifford Stone’s comments. According to Stone, the “asteroid” NASA has classified as 1991 VG behaves unlike any other known asteroid ever discovered:

“1991 VG will make its next closest approach to earth toward the end of 2016. At present there are three theories as to what 1991 VG could be:

1. A very unusual asteroid (the first of its kind to ever be observed),

2. An overlooked or forgotten rocket booster from an early space launch,

3. An extraterrestrial probe from another solar system that entered our solar system around 1947.

The first two theories are considered very unlikely, leaving only the third theory (extraterrestrial probe) being a strong possibility.

In 2016 the scientific community will be watching closely as 1991 VG once again makes a close approach to earth for an answer as to what 1991 VG really is.”

Secondly, TOR Agents are keeping a close watch on the information coming from biotransmissions via meditation from specific channelers and their information points toward 2016 as being the year for first Open Contact.

For example, according to Tom T. Moore, author of First Contact, the process of Contact will begin in 2015 and will likely be complete in 2025. The process will be “slow and gentle” so as not to frighten Earth’s population as well as to give our governments the time they need to finally acknowledge that most governing bodies have been aware of the extraterrestrial presence on our planet for decades and have hid this knowledge from their populations.

Our third and most recent indication comes from researcher Steve Pearse who, after studying over 100 cases of Contact and UFO waves, has discovered a correlation between sunspot activity and extraterrestrial visitation. According to Pearse’s findings,

“...it’s the lack of sunspot activity that ultimately opens the door to extraterrestrial visitation….the results clearly proved that over 90 percent of the well known documented case histories occurred during the Solar Minimum years, and the UFO waves recorded were directly linked to this window of calmer Sunspot activity. I did a second batch of new cases to see if they would match the same results as the first test group, and they ended up having an even higher percentile correlation. This updated report [Space Weather and ET Visitation] combines them together.”

Guess what year the next Solar Minimum phase begins? According to Steve Pearse,

“The next UFO wave has left already and is scheduled to arrive in 2016-2020 as our Sunspot activity drops down to acceptable levels to permit visitation to Earth.”

We encourage you to read Space Weather and ET Visitation because it not only proves that a correlation between solar activity and ET visitation exists, but also because of the excellent Contact cases outlined in Pearse’s report about which everyone should be aware. Continue by reading Space Weather and ET Visitation to Earth.

Comment on ‘Megaroids’ – My All-Time Favorite ‘Asteroids’ Clone by MarkP      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Hmm, I played a lot of Megaroids back on the ST... and I don't really recall it flickering particularly. But the youtube video definitely has interlace-type flicker... At the same time, as far as I know, the ST can't do interlace, certainly not the early models anyway; that's something pretty much limited to the Amiga, amongst all mid-80s computers. The video chip simply doesn't create, or have the ability to create, a full-*frame* interlaced picture, but like all other old 15khz-monitor machines (including the Amiga in its normal modes) simply repeatedly scans the same half-resolution *field* to reduce flicker at the expense of vertical resolution (and, at least with NTSC/60Hz modes, the characteristic "scanlined" effect). Creating interlace demands the ability to trigger vsync halfway through the last line of every other field, but the ST's hardware only ever produces whole lines. And it's not just a case of doubling up the 200 lines to 400 interlaced ones because the image would appear to dance up and down by a "half" (logical, one physical) line height at a rate of 25 or 30 times per second instead of making 50 or 60 steady scans. So I wonder where the truth lies? Does it in fact interlace or not? Maybe some very early ST models did indeed produce an interlaced display, but with doubled lines in order to give it a steadier appearance with Atari still toying with the idea of maybe having a high-rez interlaced mode (either 640x400 monochrome or 320x400 4-colour, which is all its 32kb screen memory - sized to be suitable for an intended but eventually scrapped 128kb RAM base model, as well as being a neat fit for the available memory bandwidth with the final modes - would allow), before they realised that interlacing in mono and thus not having any hope of inter-line smoothing would be hopelessly flickery, and that 320x400 is a not particularly useful mode (and indeed hasn't ever been popular on any of the other machines where it's been available), and so fell back to the simpler half-vertical-rez non-interlaced modes familiar from the 8-bits just with better colour depth after the first one or two revisions? Anyone writing first-gen software for the machine, especially anything that ended up as a pack-in, must have had access to a preproduction development machine or at least one of the very first production models, so there could have been all kinds of weird differences vs the more familiar, later machines. Certainly some promotional press images Atari released showed a somewhat higher resolution/higher colour display than what was eventually built, but could have been achieved in much the same way the Amiga can offer a 16-colour display at the same resolution as the Atari mono monitor; by interlacing (flicker isn't visible on the printed page...), and by allowing the video system to monopolise the memory bus at the expense of CPU speed (again, not obvious in a still photo), both things they might have eventually considered unacceptable for general purpose long-term use vs the modes we actually got. Or it could be that Mike's monitor was one of the TV derived types that are supposed to exist that run interlaced even with non-interlaced input and only use the vsync pulses to decide which field (upper or lower) to show on each individual scan, and free-running in an arbitrary arrangement if the interlace-specific pulse patterns are missing or malformed (as they are with most non-interlaced computers). In which case flickering between two different screen buffers would indeed create an interlaced display... but, if so, how would you be sure which set of lines would display as 1, 3, 5, etc and which as 2, 4, 6? Get it right and you have a smooth-edged, if somewhat flickery double-resolution display. Get it wrong, and it becomes a combtoothed mess that looks more like a horrible vidchip glitch. Other parts of what Mike says in that reminiscence make me wonder if he's not misremembering the events and fine technical details of 30+ years ago. And whether in fact the intent was instead to make use of an additional fifth colour (50% grey) that the normal medium rez couldn't quite stretch to, as it's only the white sprites (ship and UFOs) that flicker and nothing else - not the asteroids, or indeed the score and life counter - where that sorta-flickery grey would act as more of an antialiasing touch, smoothing things out in lieu and illusory simulation of the original hi-rez graphics, without having to draw a different set of graphics for each resolution, and more particularly only needing to update a single bitplane to move them around at a nice smooth 50 or 60fps without stressing the hardware. But then why bother colouring the asteroids with two colours plus transparent (still needing two bitplanes the same way 3+trans or 4 without transparency would) when the original monochrome graphics would have done just as well, either flickered to full rez or even just straight decimated (the dithering on them seems to be only in the horizontal direction, so halving the resolution wouldn't break that), with a simple tint job ultimately looking barely any different, and then being able to use a proper grey on half-rez ship/UFO sprites - especially as the roids are much larger and more diverse than the other objects? Not to mention that the ship and UFOs are quite small things to move around and should have been doable at 60fps even in four bitplanes at that resolution, and two bitplanes at half vertical rez doesn't take any more power than one bitplane at high rez (or two lots of half rez being alternated between)... after all, if the machine can shove a full rez ship around in mono at 71fps, half the pixels but with twice the bitdepth at 60fps should be easier. Mistakes happen and memory can go fuzzy after all. At the same time, I don't really want to secondguess the guy too much or overly doubt him. He put together a really solid, good looking game that's great to play, and presumably knows quite a bit about what he's doing. So a particular seed of uncertainty remains... I'm gonna have to get the old ST fixed up, find the magazine coverdisc the game was featured on, hook it up to my last working RGB CRT monitor (it totally doesn't work with LCDs... not sure if it's a timing thing, or an incorrectly made SCART cable... the screens in question are just fine with an Amiga in both progressive and interlace modes - which can be easily told the difference between on a CRT, even when you just force a low-rez image to display laced) and see what happens. (Another sidenote - the same technique was commonly used for increasing the apparent depth of the overall colour palette, and ultimately increasing the number of colours that can be displayed on a line beyond the simple rapid-palette-updating 48 possible with software like Spectrum512, by flickering rapidly between two generally very closely related shades with the phosphors and the eye smoothing out the difference; a particular example in commercial software being the title and loading screen graphics of Leavin' Teramis which claims a 22,000 colour palette on an STe and something like 3000 on a regular ST as a result... and *those* certainly don't give an interlaced appearance. But more recent demos using evolutions of the same technique - and in fact running in medrez - claim not only improved colours but an up to 704 x 440 "interlaced" resolution. Something which I've figured to be potentially possible, on a CRT only, by careful manipulation of the timing of individual scanlines within each frame (mono lines are much shorter than colour ones, timewise, and NTSC/60hz ones are just slightly shorter than PAL/50hz; within the space of the top border you might just be able to cause a vertical timing drift equal to half a line, and so *maybe* produce true interlace by alternating between those timings and the normal unadulterated ones... which is possibly also why the horizontal rez is "only" 704, as ensuring the timing during non-border scanlines is undisturbed means you can't make full use of the overscan techniques that would otherwise push that out to 800 or more. So it's a very open question. I'm pretty sure that the ST doesn't actually produce interlaced video in the normal modes, and that simply flicking between two different screenbuffers won't automatically produce it... but whether it's possible to produce what is essentially a glitch mode that happens to look just like it remains to be seen, as well as whether the early models - or some early monitors - actually produced the effect inadvertently and that's what Megaroids was written for/on, or even how convincing an illusion it created on non-interlacing computers and screens... which if they were derived from TVs probably weren't able to display full interlaced rez clearly anyway, especially in 12 or 13 inch tube form, as they'd be designed for some line overlap to reduce flicker and scanlining, perform "physical" colour blending/correction especially in PAL regions, and overall just make the image a lot smoother, and particularly in the 80-column certified models would have dotmask arrangements biased to give better horizontal rez than vertical because that's what most older CGA-like video standards would have benefitted from... So the difference between true 640x400, and 640x200 with temporal blurring that produced a quasi-antialias effect would have been quite subtle and if you never actually saw the former you could easily convince yourself that you were seeing it when actually it was the latter... much like with some "mono emulator" programs that gave a choice of either simply smoothing/antialiasing the image (essentially, translating the image through a buffer where every odd line of the mono screen painted by the main software into a fake video memory area was spliced with every even one into the real one such that they formed alternate words, and thus represented individual bitplanes in medrez; both of them being black, 00, was a black colour in the medrez palette, both white, 11, was white, and one black plus one white in either arrangement, 01 or 10, both formed a medium grey... which somewhat ironically was by far the slower mode unless you had a blitter, and even then it wasn't super fast), or "interlacing" it (the fake writes were redirected to one or other buffer area depending on whether they were to odd or even lines, but performed twice to double up the bitplanes and make every pixel either 00 or 11, and the vidchip simply directed to read 640x200 pixels from one buffer or the other on each scan... flickery, but rather faster and still giving some impression of antialiasing and higher than normal resolution), in both cases making a picture on a colour monitor that the user might be able to convince themselves was higher rez than it actually was. Though it would still be rather preferable to just run the program in medrez if it supported that natively and in a sensible manner, and save the emulation for those which either absolutely demanded mono mode or were really badly converted to colour and thus still looked better and were more usable via emulation.)
Here's How Ancient Cultures Explained Comets and Meteors      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
“A star appeared in the daytime, and Augustus persuaded people to believe it was Caesar."

Comets and meteors have fascinated the human race since they were first spotted in the night sky. But without science and space exploration to aid understanding of what these chunks of rock and ice are, ancient cultures often turned to myth and legend to explain them.

The Greeks and Romans believed that the appearance of comets, meteors and meteor showers were portentous. They were signs that something good or bad had happened or was about to happen. The arrival of a comet could herald the birth of a great figure, and some people have even argued that the star in the sky which the Persian Magi followed to Bethlehem to see the newborn Jesus was actually a comet.

In the spring of 44BC, a comet that appeared was interpreted as a sign of the deification of Julius Caesar, following his murder. Caesar’s adopted son Octavian (soon to be the Emperor Augustus) made much of the comet, which burned in the sky during the funerary games held for Caesar. This portentous event was frequently celebrated in the ancient sources. In his epic poem, the Aeneid, Virgil describes how “a star appeared in the daytime, and Augustus persuaded people to believe it was Caesar”.

Augustus celebrated the comet and the deification of his father on coins (it did help to be the son of a god when trying to rule the Roman Empire), and many examples survive today.

Meteor showers

The Roman historian Cassius Dio referred to “comet stars” occurring in August 30BC. These are mentioned as among the portents witnessed after the death of the Egyptian queen Cleopatra. Experts are not entirely sure what it means when Dio uses the plural term “comet stars”, but some have connected this recorded event to the annual Perseid meteor shower.

Though it retains an ancient Greek name, we now know that the arrival of the Perseid meteor shower every August is actually the Earth’s orbit passing through debris from the Swift-Tuttle comet.

The meteor shower is named for the Perseidai (Περσείδαι), who were the sons of the ancient Greek hero Perseus. Perseus was a legendary figure with a fine family pedigree – he was the mythical son of Zeus and Argive princess Danaë (she of the golden rain). Perseus earned himself a constellation after a number of epic adventures across the Mediterranean and Near East that included the frequently illustrated murder of the Gorgon sister, Medusa.

Another of Perseus’s celebrated acts was the rescue of the princess Andromeda. Abandoned by her parents to placate a sea monster, the princess was found by Perseus on a rock by the ocean. He married her and they went on to have seven sons and two daughters. Sky watchers believed that the constellation Perseus, located just beside Andromeda in the night sky, was the origin of the shooting stars they could see every summer, and so the name Perseid stuck.

Tears and other traditions

In Christian tradition the Perseid meteor shower has long been connected to the martyrdom of St Lawrence. Laurentius was a deacon in the early church at Rome, martyred in the year 258AD, during the persecutions of the Emperor Valerian. The martyrdom supposedly took place on August 10, when the meteor shower was at its height, and so the shooting stars are equated to the saint’s tears.

Detailed records of astronomical events and sky watching can be found in historical texts from the Far East too. Ancient and medieval records from ChinaKorea and Japan have all been found to contain detailed accounts of meteor showers. Sometimes these different sources can be correlated, which has allowed astronomers to track, for example, the impact of Halley’s comet on ancient societies both east and west. These sources have also been used to find the first recorded observation of the Perseid meteor shower as a specific event, in Han Chinese records of 36AD.

Though the myths and legends may make one think that ancient civilisations had little scientific understanding of what meteors, comets and asteroids could be, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. The early astronomers of the Near East, those who created the Babylonian and Egyptian calendars, and astronomical data were – by far – the most advanced in antiquity. And a recent study of ancient cuneiform texts has proven that the Babylonian ability to track comets, planetary movements and sky events as far back as the first millennium BC involved a much more complex geometry than had been previously believed.

I don't agree with James Kwak about everything. In fact some things I <b>vehemently</b> disagree with him on. But generally he's a good writer, has a genuine concern for the society around him and the betterment of Americans generally. Always worth a read: <b> https://jameskwak.files.wordpress.com/2018/04/kwak-2018-law-and-economism.pdf </b> BTW, attacking economics isn't a good way to go about things, as there are many different "schools" of economics. It's like attacking the profession of truck drivers because you saw a semi cutoff a Kia in traffic once. The incident has nothing to do with the profession in a general way. And this is the point those who sitback throwing spitballs at economics kind of miss. If an asteroid plunges into Earth and blows off half the surface of the planet, it's not really useful to say "Oh!!!! Those damned physics professors!!! Again with the asteroids!!!"

Top Middle East intel official says Mossad behind killing of Syrian rocket chief-New York Times quotes senior figure from intelligence agency in the region; Israeli cabinet minister refuses to comment on report but says it's a 'good thing' Aziz Azbar is dead-By TOI staff and Agencies-AUG 8,18

A senior official from a Middle East intelligence agency has pointed the finger at Israel’s Mossad for the killing of  a top Syrian chemical weapons and rocket scientist over the weekend, The New York Times reported Tuesday, reinforcing accusations from Syria.Aziz Azbar was killed when his car exploded in the northern city of Masyaf late Saturday night. The unnamed official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the paper  that Israel was behind the attack and said his own intelligence agency had been informed of the Israeli operation.A senior Israeli government official declined to comment on the report Tuesday, but noted it was “a good thing” that Azbar was dead.A pro-government Syrian paper on Sunday had accused the Mossad of being behind the hit. Azbar’s driver was also killed in the blast.According to the report, Israel believed that Azbar was leading a classified weapons development program called Sector 4 at the Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Center, and was busy re-building an underground weapons factory to replace the one said destroyed by Israel last year.Azbar was working alongside Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani, the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ elite al-Quds Force and enjoyed high-level access to both the Syrian and Iranian governments, the New York Times said.Azbar and his team were working to begin mass-producing precision-guided missiles by retrofitting SM600 Tishreen rockets. They were also working on a solid-fuel plant for missiles and rockets, a safer alternative to liquid fuel, the report said. The Tishreen is a Syrian version of the Iranian Fateh-110, a missile with a range of 200 kilomenters (125 miles.) On Sunday the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the Syria war through local contacts, also reported Azbar’s death. It said he specialized in developing rocket systems at the center’s Masyaf facility in Hama.Israel’s Hadashot TV news said Sunday night he was in charge of a project improving the range and accuracy of the regime’s Scud missiles. Reports have also indicated an Iranian missile operation at the site. The intelligence official also told The New York Times that Azbar had for years been active in the Assad regime’s chemical-weapons production program and was also involved in coordinating Iranian and Hezbollah activities in Syria. The Scientific Research and Studies Center in Masyaf, also known by its French acronym CERS, has long been associated with chemical weapons production, and was the target of a number of airstrikes attributed to Israel. An alleged Israeli strike on the site in April reportedly killed a number of Iranian soldiers. The official quoted in The New York Times Tuesday said that Israel had been tracking Azbar for years, and had wanted to assassinate him over his prominent role in Syria’s weapons program even before the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011. He said it was the fourth time in three years the Mossad has assassinated an enemy weapons engineer in a foreign country.Israel has been blamed for the killing of several scientists in recent years, including two Hamas engineers in the last 18 months.A Hamas rocket scientist was shot dead by gunmen in Malaysia in April and a drone engineer was killed in Tunisia in December 2016. Hamas blamed the Mossad for both deaths.Israel does not usually comment on reports of its alleged military operations in Syria but has repeatedly warned it would work to keep advanced weapons out of Hezbollah terrorists’ hands and has vowed to stop Iran establishing a military presence in the country. On Tuesday, Gilad Erdan who heads the Public Security and Strategic Affairs ministries declined to comment on Israel’s involvement in Azbar’s killing, but said it was “a good thing” that he was dead.“We obviously do not comment on these kinds of reports — neither confirming nor denying them — but we can talk about the man himself, who was responsible for putting high quality weapons in the hands of some bad people, and so we can say that the fact he is no longer with us is a good thing,” he told Israel Radio when asked about the New York Times report.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman on Sunday sought to downplay the possibility of Israeli involvement.“Every day in the Middle East there are hundreds of explosions and settling of scores. Every time they try to place the blame on us. So we won’t take this too seriously,” he told Hadashot News.An insurgent group calling itself the Abu Amara Brigades claimed responsibility for the operation. The group has previously claimed attacks targeting officials and militia commanders inside government territory. In April 2017, the Trump administration placed sanctions on hundreds of CERS employees following a chemical attack on the Syrian rebel-held city of Khan Sheikhoun that killed dozens of civilians, including children.Another CERS facility near Damascus was bombed by US, British and French forces in April after another chemical attack. The Syrian regime has been accused of dozens of gas attacks that have killed hundreds of civilians during the war, even after it said it was giving up its stockpile.

Israeli minister says ‘good chance’ Iran will renegotiate nuclear deal-Gilad Erdan slams 'morally bankrupt' EU for trying to salvage accord; Israeli intelligence community said optimistic that new sanctions will force major change in Tehran-By TOI staff-AUG 8,18

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan on Tuesday praised the US for reimposing tough sanctions on Iran that brought back into effect the harsh penalties lifted under the Iran nuclear deal.“It would be better if the Iranian regime would disappear entirely from this world, but it would also be a blessing to see Obama’s bad nuclear agreement replaced with a better one,” he told Israel Radio. US President Donald Trump abandoned the deal in May.“In my opinion, there is a good chance of that,” said Erdan, who also heads the Strategic Affairs Ministry. “We can already see positive results from what Trump did.”Erdan criticized the European Union for trying to salvage the deal by ensuring that economic benefits guaranteed under the 2015 accord continue to flow to the country.“The EU is morally bankrupt, and we need to remember that next time they try to lecture us,” Erdan said. The EU, along with China, Russia, France, Germany and the UK, was also a signatory to the deal and has not withdrawn. In Israel, the reimposition of US sanctions was lauded as a historic turning point that could ultimately lead to the Islamic Republic’s downfall. On Tuesday, Israel Radio quoted an unnamed senior official who said the Israeli intelligence community was optimistic the sanctions would lead to major changes in Iran and force Tehran to renegotiate the deal.“We would like to see a change in policy, but there is no way of knowing how long that will take,” the official said.“The only hammer available right now is economic, and using that, there is a good change Iran will fall to its knees,” he said. “Right now Iran is weak and hysterical.”The new sanctions on Iran took effect just after midnight in Washington on Tuesday as part of Trump’s withdrawal from the international accord designed to limit Iran’s nuclear program.Trump signed an executive order restoring the penalties on Monday, which he said would put “maximum economic pressure” on the country. The sanctions affect financial transactions that involve US dollars, Iran’s automotive sector, the purchase of commercial planes and metals including gold.A second batch of US sanctions targeting Iran’s oil sector and central bank are to be reimposed in early November.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump for ratcheting up pressure on the Islamic Republic, and called on European nations to follow his lead.“It symbolizes the determination to curb Iran’s regional aggression and its ongoing plans to arm itself with nuclear weapons,” Netanyahu said in a video released Monday. On Monday, the European Union’s diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini said the bloc, as well as Britain, France and Germany, deeply regretted Washington’s move.“We are determined to protect European economic operators engaged in legitimate business with Iran,” she said in a statement. Many large European firms are leaving Iran for fear of US penalties, and Trump warned of “severe consequences” against firms and individuals that continued to do business with Iran. The impact of the return of sanctions has ramped up tensions inside Iran, which has seen days of protests and strikes in multiple towns and cities over water shortages, high prices and wider anger at the political system.Severe reporting restrictions have made it impossible to verify the swirl of claims coming through social media.Agencies contributed to this report.

Fresh US sanctions on Iran kick in as clock hits midnight-Reimposition of economic restrictions as part of Trump's withdrawal from nuclear deal met with cheers in Jerusalem, jeers in Tehran and Europe-By TOI staff-AUG 8,18

New US sanctions on Iran took effect just after midnight in Washington on Tuesday as part of President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the international accord meant to limit the Iranian nuclear program. On Monday, Trump signed an executive order restoring sanctions on Iran, which he said would would put “maximum economic pressure” on the country. He also held out hope for new negotiations between Iran and the United States that would result in another, more wide-ranging, accord. The new sanctions target Iran’s automotive sector and trade in gold and precious metals. They come ahead of even more biting sanctions set to be introduced on November 5 against the country’s energy and banking sectors. While cheered by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior Israeli officials, the reimposition of US sanctions was bemoaned by the nuclear deal’s European signatories and the EU, who defended the accord and vowed to protect European firms from US economic penalties. In a White House statement announcing the sanctions, Trump repeated his criticisms of the deal, and argued that Iran’s behavior since the pact was implemented has vindicated his long-held position.“The JCPOA, a horrible, one-sided deal, failed to achieve the fundamental objective of blocking all paths to an Iranian nuclear bomb, and it threw a lifeline of cash to a murderous dictatorship that has continued to spread bloodshed, violence, and chaos,” Trump said.“Since the deal was reached, Iran’s aggression has only increased. The regime has used the windfall of newly accessible funds it received under the JCPOA to build nuclear-capable missiles, fund terrorism, and fuel conflict across the Middle East and beyond.”Following Trump’s announced US departure from the deal in May, the White House has, through 17 rounds, sanctioned 38 Iran-related targets. The objective, the administration has indicated, is to change Iranian behavior.“Reimposition of nuclear-related sanctions through today’s actions further intensifies pressure on Tehran to change its conduct,” Trump said Monday. In May, Trump withdrew the United States from the Iran nuclear deal forged under the Obama administration and with five other world powers, a move that set in motion a renewal of sanctions against Iran that had been removed once the landmark accord was implemented in January 2016.In Israel, the reimposition of US sanctions was lauded as a historic turning point that could ultimately lead to the Islamic Republic’s downfall, with senior officials calling on other countries to follow suit.“It symbolizes the determination to curb Iran’s regional aggression and its ongoing plans to arm itself with nuclear weapons,” said Netanyahu in a video released Monday, moments after Trump signed new sanctions into law.Jerusalem’s warm embrace of the US sanctions in Iran stood in stark contrast to the European Union, which said it would move to protect countries that remain in Iran.“We deeply regret the re-imposition of sanctions by the US, due to the latter’s withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” the union’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, and the foreign ministers of the UK, France and Germany said in a joint statement, using the nuclear deal’s technical name.“The JCPOA is working and delivering on its goal, namely to ensure that the Iranian program remains exclusively peaceful,” the statement went on. “It is a key element of the global nuclear non-proliferation architecture, crucial for the security of Europe, the region, and the entire world.”The European Commission vowed to oppose the new US sanctions regime, updating its so-called Blocking Statute that is aimed at “sustaining trade and economic relations between the EU and Iran.”In Tehran, President Hassan Rouhani rejected Trump’s call for renewed negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program, saying it was a statement intended only for American audiences and to foment chaos in Iran.In a televised interview, he said “Negotiations with sanctions doesn’t make sense. They are imposing sanctions on Iranian children, patients and the nation.” He was referring to fears that essential supplies such as medicines would be affected when sanctions return. He said Iran had “always welcomed negotiations,” but that Washington would first have to demonstrate it can be trusted.“If you’re an enemy and you stab the other person with a knife and then you say you want negotiations, then the first thing you have to do is remove the knife.”“How do they show they are trustworthy? By returning to the JCPOA,” he said, using the technical name for the 2015 nuclear deal.Rouhani fell back on the rhetoric of many of his predecessors by referencing the 1953 CIA-backed coup that overthrew Iran’s elected prime minister and cemented the shah’s rule.“I have no pre-conditions” for negotiating with America “if the US government is ready to negotiate about paying compensation to the Iranian nation from 1953 until now,” Rouhani said. “The US owes the Iranian nation for its intervention in Iran. Two weeks ago, Trump indicated that he was willing to meet with Iran’s leaders at any time and without any preconditions.“I would certainly meet with Iran if they’re ready to meet,” Trump said during a White House press conference, adding that he was willing to do so with “no preconditions.”The week before, Trump tweeted at Rouhani that Iran would “suffer consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before,” in a dramatic all-caps tweet. To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 23, 2018-His tweet was ostensibly a response to a speech Rouhani gave the night before in which he threatened that the United States would experience the “mother of all wars” if it entered into an armed confrontation with Iran.Agencies contributed to this report.

2 officers dismissed from elite army unit after training accidents-After 2 Maglan soldiers injured in separate incidents, IDF says it is 'unacceptable and unprofessional to unnecessarily endanger' troops during training-By TOI staff-AUG 8,18

The Israel Defense Forces announced on Monday the dismissal of two officers from an elite commando unit following a pair of recent training accidents in which soldiers were injured.Additionally, the commander of the platoon in which the officers served was reprimanded, the IDF said in a statement summarizing the investigation into the incidents led by Brig. Gen. Yaron Finkelman, head of the 98th Paratroopers Division. In one of the instances, a soldier from the Maglan unit was seriously injured during a training exercise while jumping from a moving vehicle into a thorn bush, according to the army. The soldier’s commander, who the army named only as First Lieutenant Y., was removed as a result of the incident. Finkelman also ordered a halt to all training exercises in the Commando Brigade until the investigation’s recommendations are implemented and the unit’s training files are reviewed.“The division commander determined this action was improper, unprofessional, immoral, dangerous and unnecessary,” the IDF said.In the second incident a soldier was moderately wounded during Krav Maga exercises but did not receive medical treatment immediately after. The army said the injury occurred during a Krav Maga demonstration in which protective equipment was not used. The IDF said the soldier’s commander, First Lieutenant G., was removed for “acting erroneously during the [Krav Maga] training and acted negligently by not sending the soldier for treatment.”Krav Maga exercises have been put on hold in the Commando Brigade until commanders and instructors undergo a “refresher” of the training commands, the army said. New mechanisms for oversight and approval of Krav Maga training in the brigade will also be introduced, the IDF added. The army said the findings of the investigation would be given to the Military Advocate General to decide whether to open a Military Police investigation. It also said commanders were in touch with the families of the injured soldiers.“The IDF takes risks in the face of the enemy as required to fulfill its operational duties,” the army said. “It is unacceptable and unprofessional to unnecessarily endanger soldiers during training and routine activities.”Parents of soldiers in the unit claimed to the Ynet news site earlier this week that routine training for the soldiers regularly crossed the threshold into violence. They also complained of the secrecy surrounding the activities of the unit, and said they relied on the officers and commanders to keep their children safe.Maglan is a special elite unit that operates behind enemy lines. The unit’s 18 months of training is among the most strenuous in the IDF.

GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

Firefighters battling 122 active forest fires across northern Ontario-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-August 8, 2018

TORONTO — There was little rest for firefighters in northern Ontario during the long weekend as they continued battling flames on numerous fire lines. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources says there were 122 active fires as of Monday night, including 78 in the northwest region and 44 in the northeast.Eighteen fires in the northeast and seven in the northwest were classified as out of control. The largest fire in the northeast, "Parry Sound 33," covers about 113 square kilometres and remains out of control. Officials say "extremely dry fuel conditions remain" despite the area receiving about 10 millimetres of rain on Monday. An evacuation order for residents of several communities in the French River area remain in effect and numerous travel restrictions remain in force.Another large fire dubbed "North Bay 72" about 30 kilometres west of Temiskaming Shores remains out of control. That blaze began on July 8 and was being held at about 272 square kilometres. The ministry says there have been 918 forest fires so far this year compared to 354 in 2017.The Canadian Press.

Health care workers ask Tories to stop repeal of sex-ed curriculum-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-August 8, 2018

TORONTO — Nearly 1,800 health-care workers from across the province are asking the Tory government to stop plans to repeal and replace Ontario's modernized sex-ed curriculum. The group of doctors, nurses and social workers signed a petition that was delivered to the provincial legislature today by NDP Leader Andrea Horwath.Premier Doug Ford had long promised to scrap the sex-ed curriculum updated by his Liberal predecessors, and has said the government will engage in a province-wide consultation to create a new lesson plan. The government has said teachers will use a 1998 version of the curriculum this fall as those consultations are underway. The group of health-care workers who signed the petition says repealing the curriculum will put children's safety and mental health at risk by providing them with outdated information. In addition to individual workers, groups including the Registered Nurses of Ontario, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Ontario Association of Social Workers have signed the petition. The Canadian Press.

Largest wildfire in California history to burn for rest of August-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Dan Whitcomb-August 8, 2018

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - California's biggest wildfire on record was expected to burn for the rest of the month, fire officials said on Tuesday, as hot and windy conditions challenged thousands of fire crews battling eight major blazes burning out of control across the state. The Mendocino Complex grew to span 290,692 acres (117,639 hectares) by Tuesday morning, with barely a third of it contained since two wildfires merged at the southern tip of the Mendocino National Forest, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said.It is the largest of eight major fires burning out of control across California, prompting U.S. President Donald Trump to declare a "major disaster" in the state. The size of the fire has surpassed that of last year's Thomas Fire, which burned 281,893 acres in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties and destroyed more than 1,000 structures.Nearly half of the ten largest California wildfires on record occurred in the last decade. The Mendocino Complex has burnt 75 homes and forced the evacuation of thousands of people. Fire officials had hoped to extinguish the fire by mid-August, but pushed that date to early September on Tuesday.Temperatures could reach 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 Celsius) in Northern California over the next few days, with gusty winds fanning the flames of the complex, a National Weather Service meteorologist said. The 3,900 personnel battling the Mendocino Complex on Monday were focusing on keeping flames from breaking through fire lines on a ridge above the foothill communities of Nice, Lucerne, Glen Haven, and Clearlake Oaks, said Tricia Austin, a spokeswoman for Cal Fire.Elsewhere in California, evacuations were ordered for cabins in Cleveland National Forest's canyons in Orange County on Monday afternoon, after a blaze broke out to quickly engulf 700 acres (283 hectares). The Carr Fire, which has torched 167,000 acres in the scenic Shasta-Trinity region north of Sacramento since breaking out on July 23, was 47 percent contained. The Carr Fire has been blamed for seven deaths, including that of a 21-year-old Pacific Gas and Electric Company lineman Jay Ayeta. The company said on Sunday he was killed in a vehicle crash as he worked with crews in dangerous terrain."California wildfires are being magnified and made so much worse by the bad environmental laws which aren't allowing massive amount of readily available water to be properly utilized," Trump wrote on Twitter, without providing supporting evidence.A Cal Fire spokesman declined to comment on Trump's claims but said crews did not lack water to fight the flames.Environmental activists and some politicians say the intensity of the state's wildfire season could be linked in part to climate change.(Additional reporting by Brendan O'Brien in Milwaukee; Editing by Raissa Kasolowsky and Bernadette Baum)

Amnesty International calls for united front against Saudi Arabia-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-August 8, 2018

MONTREAL — Amnesty International says the global community should form a united front with Canada and speak out to protect two recently arrested women, including the sister of jailed blogger Raif Badawi.Genevieve Paul, the director of Amnesty's francophone branch, points out that pressure is put on the Saudi government when news of such arrests becomes public."I don't think it will worsen the situation because very often when we make evident unjust imprisonments, like the case of Samar Badawi, that increases their protection and increases pressure on the government," she said in an interview Monday.Amnesty International has said Badawi's sister was recently detained along with Nassima al-Sada, another prominent female activist.Paul pointed to the case of Raif Badawi as an example of how putting international pressure on the Saudis can have an impact."He was sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in prison, he received 50 lashes in 2015 and he could receive others, but he hasn't," she said."We do believe that this is because of continuous pressure and visibility on Raif's case so we're really hoping that more states speak out on Samar Badawi and all other activists."Paul stressed the situation is worse when the government does what it wants in secret and is not singled out for alleged human rights violations. "Clearly the aggressive reaction of the Saudi government shows that it's been disturbed," she added.Saudi Arabia said Sunday it was ordering Canada's ambassador to leave the country and freezing all new trade and investment transactions with Canada in a spat over human rights. The Islamic Kingdom made the decision in retaliation to a Global Affairs Canada's tweet that expressed concerns about the arrests of civil society and women's rights activists in the country, such as Samar Badawi.Paul said the Saudi government knows there are serious human rights violations in the country."It shows the real colours of the regime, and the international community should toughen its tone against the Saudi government," she said. The Amnesty spokeswoman noted a ban on women drivers was lifted in June, but that a number of activists who campaigned for the right to drive were arrested and face up to 20 years in prison."That's proof there's double talk, it's proof that there is no real reform in the country," she said. "On the contrary, the repression has intensified." She reiterated that Ottawa should suspend the sale of armoured vehicles to the Saudis, claiming that Amnesty still has strong reasons to believe they are being used in Yemen to commit serious human rights violations."We've been saying that without a serious human rights evaluation, we should not be transferring any military aid, any arms to Saudi Arabia," Paul said.Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said Monday the Canadian government will continue to raise its voice and defend human rights."We will always speak up for human rights, we will always speak up for women's rights around the world," she told reporters in Vancouver. "The most important thing for us is the life and the living conditions of activists."Ensaf Haidar, Raif Badawi's wife, who lives in Quebec with her three children, said Monday she was surprised when she heard about the two new arrests.Haidar and her children became Canadian citizens on Canada Day.Freeland also said Haidar and her family merit special attention from the government of Canada, adding, "a lot of Canadian civil society has been speaking up for her.""It's something that we do," Freeland said. "We stand up for Canadians and their families around the world."Peter Rakobowchuk , The Canadian Press.

For God or party? China's Christians face test of faith-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-August 8, 2018

NANYANG, China — The 62-year-old Chinese shopkeeper had waited nearly his entire adult life to see his dream of building a church come true — a brick house with a sunny courtyard and spacious hall with room for 200 believers. But in March, about a dozen police officers and local officials suddenly showed up at the church on his property and made the frightened congregants disperse. They ordered that the cross, a painting of the Last Supper and Bible verse calligraphy be taken down. And they demanded that all services stop until each person, along with the church itself, was registered with the government, said the shopkeeper, Guo.Without warning, Guo and his neighbours in China's Christian heartland province of Henan had found themselves on the front lines of an ambitious new effort by the officially atheist ruling Communist Party to dictate — and in some cases displace — the practice of faith in the country."I've always prayed for our country's leaders, for our country to get stronger," said Guo, who gave only his last name out of fear of government retribution. "They were never this severe before, not since I started going to church in the 80's. Why are they telling us to stop now?"Under President Xi Jinping, China's most powerful leader since Mao Zedong, believers are seeing their freedoms shrink dramatically even as the country undergoes a religious revival. Experts and activists say that as he consolidates his power, Xi is waging the most severe systematic suppression of Christianity in the country since religious freedom was written into the Chinese constitution in 1982.The crackdown on Christianity is part of a broader push by Xi to "Sinicize" all the nation's religions by infusing them with "Chinese characteristics" such as loyalty to the Communist Party. Islamic crescents and domes have been stripped from mosques, and a campaign launched to "re-educate" tens of thousands of Uighur Muslims. Tibetan children have been moved from Buddhist temples to schools and banned from religious activities during their summer holidays, state-run media report. This spring, a five-year plan to "Sinicize" Christianity in particular was introduced, along with new rules on religious affairs. Over the last several months, local governments across the country have shut down hundreds of private Christian "house churches." A statement last week from 47 in Beijing alone said they had faced "unprecedented" harassment since February.Authorities have also seized Bibles, while major e-commerce retailers JD.com and Taobao pulled them off their sites. Children and party members are banned from churches in some areas, and at least one township has encouraged Christians to replace posters of Jesus with portraits of Xi. Some Christians have resorted to holding services in secret.A dozen Chinese Protestants interviewed by the Associated Press described gatherings that were raided, interrogations and surveillance, and one pastor said hundreds of his congregants were questioned individually about their faith. Like Guo, the majority requested that their names be partly or fully withheld because they feared punishment from authorities. After reporters visited Henan in June, some interviewees said they were contacted by police or local officials who urged them not to discuss any new measures around Christianity. The party has long been wary of Christianity because of its affiliation with Western political values. Several Chinese human rights lawyers jailed for their work, including Jiang Tianyong and Li Heping, are outspoken Christians. So too are many Hong Kong pro-democracy activists, not least among them 2014 protest leader Joshua Wong."Chinese leaders have always been suspicious of the political challenge or threat that Christianity poses to the Communist regime," said Xi Lian, a scholar of Christianity in China at Duke University. "Under Xi, this fear of Western infiltration has intensified and gained a prominence that we haven't seen for a long time."___Guo, who keeps a small storefront selling ornate doors in a riverside district, once had eyesight so poor that he could not distinguish the sky from the earth. But after finding God at 27 years old, he made a seemingly miraculous recovery that he attributes to his faith. For decades, he, like many Christians in China, shuttled from one unregistered house church to another, where folding chairs served as pews and coffee tables as lecterns. Two years ago, he and 10 other Christians pooled their money to erect a permanent church on his property. They are part of what experts describe as a spiritual awakening in China. The number of Chinese believers of all faiths has doubled in two decades to an estimated 200 million, by official count, as the hold of the Communist party has weakened. Among them are an estimated 67 million Christians, including Catholics — a number that is expected to swell to become the world's largest Christian population in a matter of decades. This rapid growth has reinvigorated the party's longtime mission to domesticate a religion traditionally aligned with the West.Historians believe that Christianity was known to China as early as the seventh century, and was later propagated by Jesuit missionaries starting in the 1500s. In recent decades the religion has faced by turns heavy persecution and tacit acceptance.During the Cultural Revolution, when Mao sought to eradicate all religions, Christians were jailed, tortured and publicly humiliated. But they survived by operating covertly and grew steadily in number after Mao's death in 1976, when a populace disillusioned with the Communist Party began to seek moral guidance elsewhere.Chinese Christians say the Bible gives them a sense of right versus wrong and the strength to endure in a country where power often trumps justice. While China's rapid growth has brought prosperity to many, others despair at what they see as a deterioration of public morals. The deaths of children in scandals involving tainted infant formula and shoddily-built schools in recent years have led to the sense that modern China was in the midst of an ethical crisis."After the 'collapse' of communist ideology, no value system has been in place to fill the spiritual vacuum," said writer Zhang Lijia. "China has witnessed a religious revival in recent decades precisely because of this vacuum and relaxed control."Officials once largely tolerated the unregistered Protestant house churches that sprang up independent of the official Christian Council, clamping down on some while allowing others to grow. But this year they have taken a tougher approach that relies partly on "thought reform" — a phrase for political indoctrination. Last November, Christian residents of a rural township in southeast Jiangxi province were persuaded to replace posters of the cross and Jesus Christ inside their homes with portraits of Xi, a local official said."Through our thought reform, they've voluntarily done it," Qi Yan, a member of the township party committee, told the AP by phone. "The move is aimed at Christian families in poverty, and we educated them to believe in science and not in superstition, making them believe in the party."The poster campaign appears to symbolize what analysts see as the underlying force driving the change in the party's approach to religion: the ascendance of Xi."Xi is a closet Maoist — he is very anxious about thought control," said Willy Lam, a Chinese politics expert at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. "He definitely does not want people to be faithful members of the church, because then people would profess their allegiance to the church rather than to the party, or more exactly, to Xi himself."Various state and local officials declined repeated requests to comment. But in 2016, Xi explicitly warned against the perceived foreign threats tied to faith, telling a religion conference: "We must resolutely guard against overseas infiltrations via religious means." And in April, the religious affairs department published an article saying that churches must endorse the party's leadership as part of "Sinicization.""Only Sinicized churches can obtain God's love," the article stated. The government is even cracking down on Christians more aggressively through legal means. In March, a prominent Chinese house church leader with US permanent residency was sentenced to seven years in prison after he built Christian schools in Myanmar. And half a dozen Christians were sentenced last month to up to 13 years in jail for involvement in a "cult," according to U.S.-based Christian non-profit ChinaAid.The pressure has pushed several dozen pastors and their families to flee to the United States in recent years, ChinaAid says. The wife of one pastor under house arrest left for Midland, Texas about a year ago, after authorities warned that their children might have trouble getting an education in China. She said members of their church in China were barred from being baptized, and even a simple Christmas service was interrupted."The government says that we have religious freedom, but really there is no freedom at all," said the pastor's wife, who asked to remain anonymous for her husband's safety. "Many of our Christian brothers and sisters are upset and fearful."Those who resist pay the price. After Jin Mingri, a prominent pastor who leads Zion Church in Beijing, refused local authorities' request to install surveillance cameras inside his house church, police individually questioned hundreds of members of the 1,500-person congregation, he said. The congregants faced veiled threats, Jin said, and many were asked to sign a pledge promising to leave Zion, which the government agents called illegal, politically incorrect and a cult. Some people lost their jobs or were evicted from rented apartments because police intimidated their bosses and landlords. For 11 years, the church has been housed on one floor of an office building, but the property management informed Jin in May that they would have to move out at the end of the summer. Jin said the management admitted to being influenced by external "pressures.""A lot of our flock are terrified by the pressure that the government is putting on them," he said. "It's painful to think that in our own country's capital, we must pay so dearly just to practice our faith."__At the epicenter of the drive to control the Christian community in China is Henan, the cradle of Chinese civilization and the entry point for many of the earliest foreign missionaries. Today, the province is one of the most populous in the country and a key part of Xi's fight against poverty, as proclaimed by red banners across acres of peanut farms and oil fields.Around the time authorities ordered Guo's church to stop congregating in March, his district announced a crackdown on private Christian meeting spots. On a single Sunday morning, the announcement said, 700 religious banners were removed, 200 religious texts seized and 31 illegal Christian gathering places shut down. Officials went door-to-door stripping decorative scrolls bearing the cross from home entrances. In Zhengzhou, Henan's capital, all that is left of one house church is shattered glass, tangled wires and torn hymnbooks, strewn among the rubble of a knocked-down wall. Pegged to another wall is a single wooden cross, still intact. The church inside a commercial building had served about 100 believers for years. But in late January, nearly 60 officials from the local religion department and police station appeared without warning. Armed with electric saws, they demolished the church, confiscated Bibles and computers and held a handful of young worshippers — including a 14-year-old girl — at a police station for more than 10 hours, according to a church leader. The authorities called the church illegal. The church leader said they had brought documentation to the religion department three or four times in an attempt to formally register it, but never received a response. Now, they have ceased to congregate. The church leader prays that the government will change its mind."We support President Xi," he said. "All we ask for is a space for our faith."That space for Xu Shijuan, a 63-year-old Seventh-Day Adventist, was her living room, where she held house church gatherings for four years. She stopped in March, after a group of men led by a local official ordered her to disband the meeting of about two dozen elderly Christians."If you don't heed our orders, the next group to come will be law enforcement," he said, according to Xu. "They will use force to disband you."Xu readily complied. "The people have dispersed, but our faith has not," she told the AP at her home in Zhengzhou. "God's path cannot be blocked. The more you try to control it, the more it will grow."Even Protestant churches already registered with the state have not been spared greater restrictions. When reporters visited five such churches in Henan this June, all bore notices at their entrances stating that minors and party members were not allowed inside. A banner above one church door exhorted members to "implement the basic direction of the party's religious work." Another church erected a Chinese flag at the foot of its steps. Some congregations now sing the national anthem during services, according to a house church pastor named Liu. Another pastor said his government-approved church shut down its Sunday school and cancelled all activities for children after receiving orders in February.Across Henan, house churches that once hosted gatherings of hundreds have now sealed their doors and split into groups of no more than a handful. Services are announced last-minute and held in different locations each week, often under the cloak of darkness. For a time, Guo's church did the same. They avoided congregating on Sundays to escape authorities' notice. But the church members were scared, and the group dwindled to 30. Authorities appealed to Guo to help gather information on his fellow Christians. He was given a form, reviewed by the AP, which asked for churchgoers' names, educational background and addresses, as well as the length of time they had been faithful and whether they were baptized. The brick house was largely deserted this summer. Around the door frame, tattered red outlines remained of a scroll that once read "God's love is as deep as the sea."Inside, Guo has refused to remove the cross and other decorations, telling authorities they are within his private property.Among them, pinned to a wall in the nave, is a bright blue poster that quotes China's constitutional promise of religious freedom.__AP writer Brian Skoloff contributed to this report from Midland, Texas.__Follow Yanan Wang on Twitter at https://twitter.com/yananw.Yanan Wang, The Associated Press.

Russia warns of 'horrible' conflict if Georgia joins NATO-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV-August 8, 2018

MOSCOW (AP) — An attempt by NATO to incorporate the former Soviet republic of Georgia could trigger a new, "horrible" conflict, Russia's prime minister said Tuesday in a stern warning to the West marking 10 years since the Russia-Georgia war.Dmitry Medvedev said in an interview with the Kommersant daily broadcast by Russian state television that NATO's plans to eventually offer membership to Georgia are "absolutely irresponsible" and a "threat to peace."Medvedev was Russia's president during the August 2008 war, which erupted when Georgian troops tried unsuccessfully to regain control over the Moscow-backed breakaway province of South Ossetia and Russia sent troops that routed the Georgian military in five days of fighting. The Russian army was poised to advance on the Georgian capital, but Medvedev rolled it back, accepting a truce mediated by the European Union. After the war, Georgia entirely lost control of both South Ossetia and another separatist region, Abkhazia. Russia has strengthened its military presence in both regions and recognized them as independent states, but only a few countries have followed suit. The European Union on Tuesday reiterated its "firm support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders" and lamented the Russian military presence in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. In a show of support for Georgia, foreign ministers of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, and a Cabinet member from Ukraine, visited Tbilisi Tuesday, urging Russia to withdraw its troops from Abkhazia and South Ossetia. "Nowadays no country can change the borders of another country by force," said Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz.Russian-Georgian relations have improved since the war, but the issue of the breakaway regions remains, preventing the full normalization of ties.Medvedev warned that NATO's attempt to embrace Georgia could have catastrophic consequences."There is an unresolved territorial conflict ... and would they bring such a country into the military alliance?" he said. "Do they understand the possible implications? It could provoke a horrible conflict."Medvedev pointed to Moscow's recognition of independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and the Russian military bases there, saying that any attempt to change the status quo could lead to "extremely grave consequences." ''I hope that NATO's leadership will be smart enough not to take any steps in that direction," he said. The Russian prime minister described NATO's eastward expansion as a major security threat to Russia."Whatever our colleagues from the alliance may say, NATO countries see Russia as a potential enemy," he said. "We can't help getting worried when the circle around our country keeps narrowing as more and more countries join NATO. NATO's expansion clearly poses a threat to the Russian Federation."

HAVE UFO OCCUPANTS CREATED DEADLY PLAGUES THROUGHOUT HISTORY? FOLKSINGER JONI MITCHELL’S BATTLE WITH MORGELLONS, THE NEW SCOURGE      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

On March 31, 2015, the legendary folk singer Joni Mitchell was hospitalized after being found unconscious in her Los Angeles home. At the time, it was unclear what had caused her to pass out, but Mitchell, who was 71 at the time of her hospitalization, had long identified herself as sufferer of the strange and controversial condition called Morgellons Disease.

Mitchell told “The Los Angeles Times” in a 2010 interview that Morgellons Disease “seems like it’s from outer space.” In her 2014 autobiography, entitled “Joni Mitchell: In Her Own Words,” she writes, “I couldn’t wear clothing. I couldn’t leave my house for several years. Sometimes it got so I’d have to crawl across the floor. My legs would cramp up, just like a polio spasm. It hit all of the places where I had polio.”

WHAT IS JONI MITCHELL’S BIZARRE MALADY?

Folksinger Joni Mitchell has endured the symptoms of Morgellons for years.

The condition has been labeled Mitchell’s “Secret Torment” by one British newspaper, although she never made any effort to keep her condition hidden. Quite the opposite, in fact. But talking publicly about Morgellons is not an easy task, especially when the medical establishment refuses for the most part to believe the problem is even a physical “disease” at all.

Researcher, writer and radio host Tim R. Swartz has studied Morgellons closely for several years and has recently written a book on the subject called “The Final Nail In Your Coffin: A Pox To All Mankind.” (This latest offering from Inner Light/Global Communications is actually another of the company’s generous “two-books-in-one” packages and includes a book on the rumored substance “red mercury,” which is said to put nuclear capabilities in the hands of any terrorist with enough money to buy it.)

Some believe there is a connection between Morgellons and alien abductions.

The fibers that are a symptom of the disease may be similar to an alien implant. According to Swartz, “Those with Morgellons Disease describe feelings of insects scurrying below their skin and have mysterious sores that ooze out blue and white fibers, some as thick as spaghetti strands. Attempts to remove the fibers are said to produce shooting pains radiating from the site.” Sufferers also report fatigue and problems with short-term memory and concentration.

A MOTHER’S CRUSADE

Morgellons takes its name from the efforts of Mary Leitao, who in 2001 was a 43-year-old stay-at-home Mom and former lab technician in South Carolina. Her two-year-old son had begun to develop lesions on the inside of his lip that he said were caused by “bugs.” When Leitao’s son also developed sores and fibers of various colors growing out of his skin, she took him to several doctors, none of whom could find anything biologically wrong with him.

It was Leitao who coined her son’s ailment as “Morgellons,” after a condition described in 1674 by the British author Thomas Browne. Browne said the disorder caused children to “break out with harsh hairs on their backs.” But even the Morgellons Research Foundation says it is doubtful that the 17th century disease is related in any way to modern day Morgellons, Swartz writes.

After being turned away from a series of doctors, Leitao began a public campaign to raise public awareness of Morgellons, after which thousands of fellow sufferers made themselves known. But the medical community held fast to its diagnosis of “delusional parasitosis,” meaning the patient was mistaken in complaining about an infestation by insects under his or her skin but that this false belief could not be corrected by reasoning, persuasion or logical argument.

Meanwhile, all laboratory tests and pathogenic exams returned negative and offered no clinical confirmation of the patients’ complaints. Thus, physicians treat the condition as a mental illness and typically prescribe only antidepressants or other psychiatric medications.

In 2012, The Centers For Disease Control made public the their study of Morgellons, saying that “no common underlying medical condition or infectious source was identified,” and that the fibers were more likely picked up from clothing that got trapped in the sufferers’ sores. Like a Mayo Clinic study done in 2011, the CDC report reaffirmed the “delusional parasitosis” diagnosis.

Shortly after the CDC’s findings were published, Leitao dropped out of sight completely and hasn’t been heard from since. Not even the crusading mother’s contacts in the Morgellons community know where she has gone or have any idea how to contact her.

COULD MORGELLONS BE FROM MARS?

To give the medical community – somewhat begrudgingly – their due, maybe Morgellons is so hard to diagnose and analyze because it’s not an Earth-generated disease at all. Swartz puts forth his own provocative theory thusly:

“What makes Morgellons so unique are the weird fibers that grow out of the victim’s skin. No other disease on Earth has this bizarre symptom. So could this mean that Morgellons originated somewhere other than Earth?”

Swartz points to a researcher named Mike Moore who discovered a meteor on a ranch in Texas in the early 1970s. Moore concluded that the unusual rock had formed under extremely dry conditions, was volcanic in origin, and most likely resulted when a large asteroid struck the surface of Mars. Upon first finding the meteorite, Moore concluded that – since it had just come through our atmosphere – it had most likely been “sterilized” by the high heat that melted its outer surface. Ten or fifteen years after first finding the space rock, Moore discovered that “fuzz” or “filaments” were coming out of the crevice that runs through one side of the meteorite.

Moore was left to wonder how a rock from Mars could be growing something that seemed to be alive. It was not until NASA announced in 1996 that they had found the possible remnants of life in a Martian meteorite that Moore began to consider that he was seeing some kind of Martian life growing on his own meteorite. When Moore put a sample from the space rock under a microscope, he found a piece of something that had obviously been some kind of plant or at least some kind of living thing. A later analysis of a section of Moore’s meteor conducted by a lab worker at the Roswell UFO Museum in New Mexico confirmed the presence of a fiber-like creature that moved on the slide as if trying to avoid being stuck there for examination.

THE REAL LIFE “ANDROMEDA STRAIN”?

Rocks blown off of Mars have been falling to Earth throughout history, potentially bringing with them the minute lifeforms that we now call Morgellons. The concept of a disease from outer space infecting unsuspecting Earthlings is not a new one, however.

The first novel by the late Michael Crichton, 1969’s “The Andromeda Strain,” is a techno-thriller documenting the efforts of a team of scientists investigating the outbreak of a deadly extraterrestrial microorganism in Arizona. The story begins when a military satellite returns to Earth. Aerial surveillance reveals that everyone in Piedmont, Arizona, the town closest to where the satellite landed, is apparently dead. The base commander suspects the satellite returned with an extraterrestrial organism and recommends activating Wildfire, a protocol for a government-sponsored team that counters extraterrestrial biological infestation.

After leading the reader through a suspenseful ordeal, the book concludes with the team of scientists heroically saving the day. The Andromeda Strain itself eventually mutates to a benign form and the whole effort is effectively covered up and given no media attention at all.

Crichton received many letters from readers asking if the story told in his bestselling book was somehow true. The novel was published just weeks before the first lunar landing and there was a general concern about whether the astronauts could bring back germs from the moon. The “germs from outer space” theme was treated lightly in some quarters, but, in the years after the novel’s release, any newly-discovered biological agent tended to be referred to as an “Andromeda Strain.” The term became synonymous with any potential pandemic: Marbug, Ebola, Bird Flu, and so on.

At this point, we can potentially add Morgellons Disease to that frightening list.

THERE’S A LAW AGAINST THAT, YOU KNOW

Unsurprisingly, 1969 was also the year that Title 14, Section 1211 of the Code of Federal Regulations went on the books making it illegal for U.S. citizens to have contact with extraterrestrials or their vehicles. Anyone found to have such contact can be jailed for one year and fined $5,000. The NASA administrator is empowered to determine with or without a hearing that a person or object has been “extraterrestrially exposed” and impose an indeterminate quarantine under armed guard, which could not be broken even by court order. There is no limit placed on the number of individuals who could thus be arbitrarily quarantined. The definition of “extraterrestrial exposure” is left entirely up to the NASA administrator.

The legislation was buried in a batch of regulations very few members of government probably bothered to read in its entirety and was slipped onto the books without public debate. In effect, the government of the U.S. has created a whole new criminal class: UFO contactees.

But NASA said the law is really directed at extraterrestrial viruses that could wipe out humankind completely. It may be a kind of whistling in the dark given that simply quarantining a few contactees does not automatically mean some kind of outer space contagion would have no other means of spreading. But it is nevertheless an interesting official acknowledgment that such things are taken seriously at some level of government and that the potential for diseases like Morgellons to have originated in some other world is at least considered a possibility as well.

WHO’S THAT YONDER DRESSED IN BLACK?

But an infestation from another world need not have happened only in the space age.

In a book called “The Gods of Eden,” first published in 1989, author William Bramley recounts the following chilling anecdote:

“In Brandenburg, Germany, there appeared fifteen men with ‘fearful faces and long scythes, with which they cut the oats, so that the swish could be heard from a great distance, but the oats remained standing.’ The visit of these men was followed immediately by a severe outbreak of plague in Brandenburg. Were the ‘scythes’ long instruments designed to spray poison or germ-laden gasses?

“Strange men in black, demons and other terrifying figures were observed in other European communities carrying ‘brooms’ or ‘scythes’ or ‘swords’ that were used to sweep or knock at people’s doors. The inhabitants of these houses fell ill with plague afterwards. It is from these reports that people created the popular image of death as a skeleton, a demon, a man in a black robe carrying a scythe.”

Notes writer Pat Bertram, in his online comments on Bramley’s account of the origins of the Grim Reaper as a familiar cultural symbol, “The Black Death began in Asia and spread to Europe between 1347 and 1350 where it killed over 25 million people, one-third of the population.” While the current thinking is that the plague was spread by rats in overcrowded cities, Bertram writes, not all outbreaks were preceded by rat infestation and the plague often struck isolated communities that had had no contact with infected areas.

Many people in stricken areas reported the disease was caused by “evil-smelling mists” that were frequently accompanied by bright lights and unusual activity in the skies. Sometimes the disease-bearing mist was seen to be coming from rocket-like airships. An epidemic in ancient times was also linked to similar mists, for which Hippocrates, the father of medicine, prescribed large public bonfires that he believed would get rid of the bad air.

AN INVADING SPACE FLOWER?

In the 1978 version of “The Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” one of those rare remakes that is as well thought of by critics as the original version, some of the characters engage in a brief exchange about where the invading “pod army” originates.

Elisabeth Driscoll, the movie’s primary heroine, says, “I have seen these flowers all over. They are growing like parasites on other plants. All of a sudden. Where are they coming from?”

To which her friend, Nancy Bellicec, replies, “Outer space?”

Nancy’s husband, Jack Bellicec, interjects: “What are you talking about? A space flower?”

Nancy answers him, “Well, why not a space flower? Why do we always expect metal ships?”

Jack then says, “I NEVER expected metal ships.”

Which is a suggestion we should heed, even those of us in the UFO community. Perhaps Morgellons Disease is just the visible portion of an alien invasion being conducted with “space flowers” that carry with them a disease that our medical community either cannot or will not acknowledge as genuine. Maybe Morgellons is the point of entry for an alien force that eschews metal ships in favor of an insidious disease that has inspired a conspiracy of silence among doctors similar to the cover-up of UFOs themselves in other parts of officialdom.

If you experience the terrifying symptoms of Morgellons – the sensation of bugs crawling beneath your skin, painful wounds that open up for no apparent reason and start to expel strange, cotton-like fibers – don’t expect your family physician to help you. Not even the rich and famous, like Joni Mitchell, have been spared the stigma and frustration that comes with complaining of Morgellons symptoms.

But you can at least arm yourself with the well-researched book on the subject by the aforementioned Tim R. Swartz. Reading “The Final Nail In Your Coffin: A Pox To All Of Mankind” will keep you abreast of the latest research on the disease as well as lead you on a fascinating journey through the myriad possibilities of where it comes from. Swartz does not shy away from including even the unthinkable: Could Morgellons be a new bioweapon designed in Earthly laboratories? A military experiment gone wrong that the civilian medical community cannot even analyze as a disease, let alone cure?

Be watchful for another article about “The Final Nail In Your Coffin,” which will cover one more frightening method for mankind’s extermination – the secret ingredient for a nuclear weapon the size of a softball and cheap enough for the terrorist on a tight budget.

San Francisco: To make chatting with friends on its Messenger app more fun, Facebook has introduced a couple of Augmented Reality (AR) games that could accommodate up to six players at a time.

The social networking giant started rolling out the feature on Wednesday with two games "Don't Smile" which challenges who can hold a serious face the longest and "Asteroids Attack" that requires participants to navigate a spaceship.

"We're planning to roll out more games in the coming weeks and months -- including passing a beach ball back and forth with 'Beach Bump' and a matching cat game with 'Kitten Kraze'," Nora Micheva, Product Manager at Facebook Messenger wrote in a blog post.

Users will need to have the latest version of Messenger to try out these games.

How does it work?

To get started, open an existing conversation or find the person or group of people you would like to chat with and tap the video icon on the upper right corner of the screen.

Then simply tap the star button and select one of the AR games.

The person or group you are video chatting with will get a notification indicating it is time to get your game on, Micheva added.

Facebook Messenger's social AR games

Whether or not you consider yourself a gamer, you probably have at least one game installed on your smartphone or tablet. It's a market that has exploded over the last several years. From titles that take up just a few minutes of your time, to more in-depth options that you can really sit with for long stretches. There's something for everyone.

And hopefully you don't mind the in-app purchases or ads.

That variety includes augmented reality titles. These AR games are designed to take advantage of either the rear or front-facing camera, and insert digital experiences in the backdrop of the real world. We've seen AR titles really take off, too, including Pokémon GO, for instance.

So it probably isn't too surprising that platforms like Snapchat and Facebook want in on the fun, too. Snapchat has been building what it calls "Snappables" for a bit already, putting together social experiences that make sense for the platform they are on.

And now Facebook Messenger is getting its own option, which was announced earlier today. These social AR games are designed to play with others, up to six, in fact. One title has players trying not to smile as filters pop up, and the other sees players navigating a space ship and trying to avoid asteroids. They seem like interesting enough games, and Facebook says more are on the way.

So I have to ask the most obvious question here: are these games you'll play while out and about? I consider most mobile games to be time fillers, ways to fill in a few minutes before a movie, or while commuting, or something like that. And there's no denying these social experiences are definitely designed for that, but with other players involved at the same time. And these games rely on the front-facing camera, so you're basically on a video call while you play together.

Will you play a game like this, whether it's in Facebook Messenger or Snapchat (or wherever else), while you're out in public? Are you looking forward to these types of games becoming more popular? Let me know where you stand with the future of social AR gaming.

So fun! Like a combo of the movie Deep Impact and well . . . like a fun YA romance. I do wish (because I love Deep Impact) that it had gone a bit deeper and broader into what was happening in the world outside the lab with regards to the impending asteroid, but still delightful!

A Japanese sample-return spacecraft just gave its destination asteroid a special close-up. As Hayabusa2 swept to only 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) above the surface of 162173 Ryugu, it spotted boulders, dust and surface features only a few meters or feet across. It's by far the best view of Ryugu since the spacecraft arrived there about six weeks ago.

Nasa's Solar Probe Launch      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Nasa is just a few days away from launching its next science mission, a spacecraft called the Parker Solar Probe that will eventually "touch the sun." If all goes to plan, the probe will take off aboard a rocket on Saturday 11 August from Cape Canaveral in Florida. On its final close approach, in 2025, the Parker Solar Probe will get within six million kilometres of the Sun's surface — so close that it will actually fly through the star's incredibly hot atmosphere, called the corona. It is hoped the mission will provide answers to some of the Sun’s mysteries - why its atmosphere becomes hotter further away from the surface of the sun? How the solar wind of charged particles streaming out into space is born? And what causes the gigantic outbursts scientists call coronal mass ejections? One Hundred and Fifty Years Since the Discovery of Helium Helium, the second most abundant element in the universe, was discovered on the Sun before it was found on the Earth. Pierre-Jules-César Janssen, a French astronomer, noticed a yellow line in the Sun's spectrum while studying a total solar eclipse in 1868. Sir Norman Lockyer, an English astronomer, realised that this line, could not be produced by any element known at the time. It was hypothesised that a new element on the sun was responsible for this mysterious yellow emission. This unknown element was named helium by Lockyer. The Trouble with Doing Science Marnie Chesterton takes an inside look at the hoops some scientists have to jump through to get their experiments running. In an experiment to look for dark matter, Polish scientist, Pawel Majewski, at Rutherford Appleton Lab has spent 5 years orchestrating the fabrication of a test chamber, a flask called a Cryostat. For the experiment to work the chamber has to be as radiation-free as possible. The trouble is the natural radiation from Earth during the manufacture and transport keep contaminating the metal. New Horizons to Visit Ultima Thule Ultima Thule is the name given to an asteroid, or pair of asteroids, in the Kuiper Belt – a ring of rocky bodies at the edge of the Solar System. The New Horizons mission, which captured such amazing data on Pluto, got a mission extension to travel further out. This week the asteroid passed in front of a distant star, giving the team a chance to see more detail of the rocky body, which will be the furthest object visited by a man-made craft, when New Horizon’s gets there in November. On this week's live QA, I got a chance to talk with David Brin, a science fiction author, futurist, and an advisor for NASA's Innovative Advanced Concepts awards. David and I talked about the Transparent Society, why we should go to asteroids before the Moon or Mars, and some cool ideas coming out of NIAC.
