Humanae Vitae, camino de santidad

Cardenal Robert Sarah

I - Lucidez profética

Recibir Humanae Vitae no significa, material y sistemáticamente, "tener muchos hijos". ¡No!

¡No!

(ver Caritas in veritate 48) .

¡Te anuncio a Jesús, y Jesús crucificado!

Blood-Red/Orange Sun in the California Fires      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
You can see the blood red/orange sun in the lower
right hand corner of this smokey image I took
while sitting in traffic on the I-215 as I approached
CA Highway 60 in Moreno Valley.
By Douglas V. Gibbs
Author, Speaker, Instructor, Radio Host

I was on my way to a meeting in Riverside, Monday evening, when I noticed the sun, blanketed by the smoke from a nearby fire, likely the one burning in Santa Ana Canyon, was an eerie blood-red/orange color as it worked its way westward.  We've heard about the blood moon events of late, but I didn't expect to see a blood red sun.

While Southern California has seen its share of fires during this fire season, I will have to admit I've seen worse, and what we've experienced down here near the Mexican Border has been nothing compared to the raging inferno that continues to destroy homes and countryside way up north near Redding and Shasta.

According to CalFire, the Carr Fire in northern California is now at an incredible torching of 173,522 acres and is still only 47% contained.  A number of other fires also dot the landscape in that portion of the Golden State.

I live in the middle of that cluster of five fires (three active,
two 100% contained) between Los Angeles and San Diego,
and own property on the western edge of the two fires you see there in
southwestern Oregon.  The stench of smoke in the air has been ominpresent
pretty much most of the summer.  I will be traveling to Brookings, Oregon
in about a week and our route to get there has been severely altered, compared
to how we normally drive to get there, thanks to the fires.
Last December, before school let out for Christmas Vacation (that's right, I called it by its proper name), we had a fire licking the hills near our house, and it got literally across the street from the school three of my grandchildren attend.  My son had to go pick up his kids early, due to the heavy dose of smoke in the air, and he took the following snapshot:

In 2015 we had a fire sweep across the Cajon Pass, literally igniting cars as it crossed the freeway.

During one fire season prior to that, while I was still driving big rigs, I remember driving up the I-15 towards the Cajon Pass around the Ontario and Rancho Cucamonga area and trucks were along the side of the freeway on fire, as the areas all around the corridors of travel were up in flame.

Last night, as I traveled south along the I-15 from beyond the 91 Freeway in Corona, through the Temescal Valley, I noticed a fire that has been burning in the Saddleback area of Orange County had made its way over the hills and was marching down the fuel rich Cleveland National Forest towards homes in Temescal Valley and the northern end of Lake Elsinore.  Here's the pictures I pulled over to the side of the road to take:

In that last shot you can see how close the flames are to those homes down below as the fire creeps onward, and in this case, downward.

While we have had fires get close to us, where we live, before, we have been blessed to not have ever been required to evacuate, nor have we ever lost our home due to a fire.  I could not imagine how that must feel, and while the fire marching over the hills from Orange County was fascinating to watch as I drove home last night, it was nothing compared to what is going on with the Carr Fire in the mountainous and forest rich Redding region of the State.  My prayers go out to each and every one of the folks up there having to deal with the tragic horror of being faced with a massive fire that is merciless, and relentless, when it comes to its hunger to eat up all that you own.

By the numbers: Unprecedented devastation of California's wildfires      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Wildfires have turned California into a smoke-filled, hazardous landscape as thousands of firefighters — some from as far away as Australia and New Zealand — struggle to contain more than a dozen massive blazes. Many of these fires began during July, which was a brutally hot month across the state.

Why it matters: The unprecedented wildfire siege has killed at least 9 people and burned thousands of homes and businesses across the state. There is no sign of any beneficial rains to come, and we're not yet at the peak of the fire season, which normally comes in the fall. In other words, the situation may get worse before it gets better.

By the numbers:

  • The Mendocino Complex Fire, which is comprised of two large wildfires burning within a few miles of one another, has become the first California wildfire on record to eclipse 300,000 acres in size. This is equivalent to the size of Los Angeles, which is the sixth-largest city in the U.S.
  • There is a trend, driven by climate change, decades of fire management policies and human development, toward larger fires in California. Heat is a big factor in these fires.
  • California had its hottest month on record in July, with average temperatures at 5°F above the 20th Century average. Death Valley, California, set a record for the hottest month of any location on Earth, NOAA found.
  • Out of the top 20 largest wildfires in California history, only one occurred before 1950.
  • All of the top 10 largest wildfires have taken place during the past decade, with four out of the top 5 occurring since 2010.
  • California has seen 4,723 wildfires since Jan. 1, with 749,770 acres burned so far this year, according to Cal Fire and the U.S. Forest Service. This is well above the 5-year average of 18,587 acres burned by this date.
  • The acres burned in California so far is equal to almost four times the city of New York, three-quarters of the state of Rhode Island and is more than four times the city of Chicago.

The bottom line: Given where we are in the fire season, it's likely that the area burned in California this year will eclipse 1 million acres. The Mendocino Complex, for example, is not expected to be controlled — let alone completely extinguished — until sometime in September.

  • And we've yet to see the fire danger spike in southern California, which typically comes in the fall, when strong Santa Ana winds blow hot, dry air down mountainsides and through canyons, threatening a highly populated region.

Service throughout the neighborhood

In addition to the three churches involved on Saturday, businesses such as the local Home Depot and Millcreek Gardens donated supplies to help with the various projects the stake carried out throughout the neighborhood.Cindy Hanks, another community member who felt particularly blessed by the service of the West Jordan stake, described the members in yellow hats as an answer to her prayers.Jonathan’s friend and the local scoutmaster, Kyle Tishner, who was onsite helping to build the wheelchair ramp in preparation for Jonathan’s homecoming, described how he felt lucky to be able to help someone so close to him. “It’s cool to help someone out, it just makes you feel good. But it’s one thing to help someone out that you don’t know, but it’s another when it’s practically your brother,” Tishner said.West Jordan Park stake President Jeffrey Rowland explained that service can help bring peace into individual’s lives. He said his hope was for the youth to have the opportunity to work and serve others locally as well as serve in areas where the needs might be greater than in their own stake community. Muavao is a member of the Santa Ana United Methodist Church in California and was visiting the Tongan United Methodist church where the volunteers were working. Photo by Steve Griffin, Deseret News. The words “As-Salaam-Alaikum”—Arabic for “peace be unto you”—were exchanged repeatedly as leaders from both churches spoke to the crowd about the importance of overcoming fears and misunderstandings about religions and cultures that are unfamiliar.Throughout the day, heads donning yellow hats could be seen bobbing up and down the streets in the West Valley neighborhood encompassing the Jordan View Ward boundaries. In addition to the large-scale projects at the church and mosque, small service projects were carried out at various homes of community members who had requested assistance through the local ward.“If we were going to go down the service path for youth conference, we wanted as much as possible for there to be a personal connection,” he said. “We wanted our youth to actually meet these people, to communicate, and to pause from their labors to hear some stories about their lives because we wanted it to touch their hearts. It’s one thing to trim a weed or paint a post, but it’s another to have a conversation with a person.”“There’s new faces all around, and it’s beautiful,” Galicia said of the volunteers all around him. “They are coming to my house and they don’t know me, but by looking at their eyes I know that we have known each other for a long time.”Imam Mehtar explained that the greatest societies in history were not those built in pursuit of education and wealth, but rather those “that helped create an environment of safety, security, and goodness and well-being towards others.” He continued, “That is what has made you successful here today.”WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAHSimilarly, Imam Mehtar expressed his gratitude for the service provided to the Muslim mosque and the brotherhood and friendship fostered by the continual efforts of the Church to reach out and serve the Muslim communities.Hanks’ grandson, Jonathan, who lives with her, was recently in an accident which left him paralyzed. Without resources to build the necessary accommodations for the changes required by her grandson’s condition when he returns home from physical rehabilitation in the next month or so, Hanks expressed her gratitude for the time and resources the stake provided in building a wheelchair accessible ramp for her home. The stake has additionally helped her and her family with filing the necessary paperwork and plans to renovate the bathroom and other parts of the home that need adjustment for her grandson’s condition.Bishop Mark Sears of the Jordan View Ward, along with his ward council, spent several weeks working with the West Jordan Park Stake leaders to generate a list of community members who could benefit from the stake’s day of service. The service projects on Saturday ranged from landscaping the mosque’s grounds to helping clean and update the interior and exterior building of the nearby Tongan United Methodist Church, and on to building a wheelchair accessible entrance ramp for a local teen who was recently paralyzed. The leaders of the West Jordan Utah Park Stake said they hoped the efforts would teach the youth of the stake that serving others can bring peace into their lives. The project, which was implemented as part of the stake’s youth conference, was built on the Church’s 2018 youth theme “Peace in Christ.” Volunteers paint a bridge at the Tongan United Methodist church. Photo by Steve Griffin, Deseret News.On Saturday, August 4, the group crowding inside the room consisted mostly of members of the West Jordan Utah Park Stake and members of the Islamic Center congregation. They volunteered their Saturday to perform acts of service throughout the West Valley neighborhood where the mosque is located and, together, they represented a united effort to improve interfaith dialogue and build lasting relations among the diverse communities in the Salt Lake Valley. Continuing relationshipsAlthough Galicia was born and raised in Mexico, he said that Salt Lake City feels like his home now, and that the gospel is a huge part of that for him. “I feel so blessed to live here where the LDS community is so much bigger than other places,” Galicia said.Although the day of service was initially conceptualized as a large-scale community service project, its actual rendering became a testament to the power of brotherhood, kindness, and Christlike love as it brought together the efforts of three separate faith communities joined in a mutual effort to beautify and bring peace to the local community. Imam Muhammed Shoayb talks with members of the West Jordan Utah Park Stake following lunch at the Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake Mosque. Photo by Steve Griffin, Deseret News.Standing in his kitchen as volunteers in yellow hats bustled around him and his furniture, Oscar Galicia expressed his gratitude for the work the West Jordan stake was providing for his family. He explained that as a single father trying to balance going back to school for an engineering degree and taking care of his children, house and yard work have necessarily taken a seat on the backburner.President Rowland said that after seeing various secular and faith populations uniting in unexpected ways to serve this community, “it was neat to consider that we ended up going beyond just local ward members and were able to do something helpful for those not of our faith as well.”It’s only when partnering together for positive change that religion can serve a true humanitarian purpose, said Abdul Afridi, trustee for the Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake. It needs to be a combined effort, he explained.“So we call each other the same as you do,” Pastor Ofahengaue said, indicating another similarity between Pacific Islanders and Latter-day Saints. He described his gratitude for the Utah community which he feels has been very welcoming and has made an effort to learn about who Muslims are and what Islam is all about. Members of the West Jordan Utah Park Stake and members of the Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake work together outside the Mosque. Photo by Steve Griffin, Deseret News.Service for a day, purpose for the futureFor many of the youth, it was their first time in a Muslim mosque and they sat with raptured attention, facing the mosque’s imam, Muhamed Shoayb Mehtar, as he spoke about the particular similarities between the Islamic and Latter-day Saint faiths.“I think that is really a piece of ministering,” Parry said. “You know it’s not just this one-time thing, but people made a connection and are excited to come back and continue serving.”Describing their gratitude for the service and the relationships built throughout the day, the leaders of both the mosque and the Tongan Methodist church said they hoped to continue to partner with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as much as possible. He said seeing people all over his home, painting, cleaning, trimming bushes and more, has helped strengthen his sense of belonging in his community.“Our goal is not only the Chesterfield area,” Afridi said. “Our goal is to the next and next neighborhood, then the next state, then all over the world.”“I’m just so blessed to have them here,” Hanks said. “It’s been really hard to see my grandson like that, but our prayers are just answered every day.”“I think the Utahns and LDS populations have been very supportive and idea sharing over generations,” Imam Mehtar said. “And that if we use this given model that we are seeing here in Utah on a global level, we could create phenomenal changes.”

He said their efforts exemplify the type of bridge building that communities need in order to rally around one another and be lifted up together.“Mormons and Pacific Islanders have similar lifestyles because they are both so family oriented,” Pastor Ofahengaue said. He noted that the cultural similarities between the Utah and Pacific Islander populations have allowed him to feel welcome and at home since moving to Utah five years ago.Pastor David Ofahengaue of the Tongan United Methodist Church said it was a surprise connection with a city council member that helped the West Jordan stake become aware of his church’s needs for renovation and cleaning. He added that he feels a deep connection with the Latter-day Saint population based on the longstanding presence of the Church in the Pacific Islands.A personal approach to service“God understands that we have more similarities between us than differences,” Imam Mehtar said. “I think that is really a piece of ministering,” Parry said. “You know it’s not just this one-time thing, but people made a connection and are excited to come back and continue serving.”Cindy Hanks, another community member who felt particularly blessed by the service of the West Jordan stake, described the members in yellow hats as an answer to her prayers.Although the stake planned to get as much done as they could on Saturday, Josh Parry, the stake Young Men’s president, said they already have groups planning to return in the spring to continue the service and the relationships they have developed.Similarly, Imam Mehtar expressed his gratitude for the service provided to the Muslim mosque and the brotherhood and friendship fostered by the continual efforts of the Church to reach out and serve the Muslim communities.Although the day of service was initially conceptualized as a large-scale community service project, its actual rendering became a testament to the power of brotherhood, kindness, and Christlike love as it brought together the efforts of three separate faith communities joined in a mutual effort to beautify and bring peace to the local community. It’s only when partnering together for positive change that religion can serve a true humanitarian purpose, said Abdul Afridi, trustee for the Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake. It needs to be a combined effort, he explained.Pastor David Ofahengaue of the Tongan United Methodist Church said it was a surprise connection with a city council member that helped the West Jordan stake become aware of his church’s needs for renovation and cleaning. He added that he feels a deep connection with the Latter-day Saint population based on the longstanding presence of the Church in the Pacific Islands.Throughout the day, heads donning yellow hats could be seen bobbing up and down the streets in the West Valley neighborhood encompassing the Jordan View Ward boundaries. In addition to the large-scale projects at the church and mosque, small service projects were carried out at various homes of community members who had requested assistance through the local ward.As President Rowland explained it, the way they set up the service projects made it about more than the service itself. Imam Muhammed Shoayb talks with members of the West Jordan Utah Park Stake following lunch at the Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake Mosque. Photo by Steve Griffin, Deseret News.In addition to the three churches involved on Saturday, businesses such as the local Home Depot and Millcreek Gardens donated supplies to help with the various projects the stake carried out throughout the neighborhood. Volunteers paint a bridge at the Tongan United Methodist church. Photo by Steve Griffin, Deseret News.Describing their gratitude for the service and the relationships built throughout the day, the leaders of both the mosque and the Tongan Methodist church said they hoped to continue to partner with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as much as possible.Hanks’ grandson, Jonathan, who lives with her, was recently in an accident which left him paralyzed. Without resources to build the necessary accommodations for the changes required by her grandson’s condition when he returns home from physical rehabilitation in the next month or so, Hanks expressed her gratitude for the time and resources the stake provided in building a wheelchair accessible ramp for her home. The stake has additionally helped her and her family with filing the necessary paperwork and plans to renovate the bathroom and other parts of the home that need adjustment for her grandson’s condition. He described his gratitude for the Utah community which he feels has been very welcoming and has made an effort to learn about who Muslims are and what Islam is all about.“Our goal is not only the Chesterfield area,” Afridi said. “Our goal is to the next and next neighborhood, then the next state, then all over the world.”For many of the youth, it was their first time in a Muslim mosque and they sat with raptured attention, facing the mosque’s imam, Muhamed Shoayb Mehtar, as he spoke about the particular similarities between the Islamic and Latter-day Saint faiths. He said seeing people all over his home, painting, cleaning, trimming bushes and more, has helped strengthen his sense of belonging in his community.

The project, which was implemented as part of the stake’s youth conference, was built on the Church’s 2018 youth theme “Peace in Christ.”“Mormons and Pacific Islanders have similar lifestyles because they are both so family oriented,” Pastor Ofahengaue said. He noted that the cultural similarities between the Utah and Pacific Islander populations have allowed him to feel welcome and at home since moving to Utah five years ago.Jonathan’s friend and the local scoutmaster, Kyle Tishner, who was onsite helping to build the wheelchair ramp in preparation for Jonathan’s homecoming, described how he felt lucky to be able to help someone so close to him. “It’s cool to help someone out, it just makes you feel good. But it’s one thing to help someone out that you don’t know, but it’s another when it’s practically your brother,” Tishner said.Imam Mehtar explained that the greatest societies in history were not those built in pursuit of education and wealth, but rather those “that helped create an environment of safety, security, and goodness and well-being towards others.” He continued, “That is what has made you successful here today.” Imaam Muhammed Shoayb talks with members of the West Jordan Utah Park Stake in the prayer hall of the Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake Mosque following a lunch break during an all-day service project in the Chesterfield area. Photo by Steve Griffin, Deseret News.Sitting under the colorful domed ceiling in the center of the Khadeeja Islamic Center were some 200 youth and their leaders wearing bright yellow hats.Bishop Mark Sears of the Jordan View Ward, along with his ward council, spent several weeks working with the West Jordan Park Stake leaders to generate a list of community members who could benefit from the stake’s day of service.Service throughout the neighborhoodAlthough Galicia was born and raised in Mexico, he said that Salt Lake City feels like his home now, and that the gospel is a huge part of that for him. “I feel so blessed to live here where the LDS community is so much bigger than other places,” Galicia said.Admitting there is a lot more work needed by his church than can be accomplished in a single day or by a single volunteering stake, Pastor Ofahengaue said the West Jordan Park Stake’s efforts are reflective of the positive relationship the churches have with one another. He said their efforts exemplify the type of bridge building that communities need in order to rally around one another and be lifted up together.“I’m just so blessed to have them here,” Hanks said. “It’s been really hard to see my grandson like that, but our prayers are just answered every day.”The words “As-Salaam-Alaikum”—Arabic for “peace be unto you”—were exchanged repeatedly as leaders from both churches spoke to the crowd about the importance of overcoming fears and misunderstandings about religions and cultures that are unfamiliar.

“God understands that we have more similarities between us than differences,” Imam Mehtar said.West Jordan Park stake President Jeffrey Rowland explained that service can help bring peace into individual’s lives. He said his hope was for the youth to have the opportunity to work and serve others locally as well as serve in areas where the needs might be greater than in their own stake community.President Rowland said that after seeing various secular and faith populations uniting in unexpected ways to serve this community, “it was neat to consider that we ended up going beyond just local ward members and were able to do something helpful for those not of our faith as well.”“So we call each other the same as you do,” Pastor Ofahengaue said, indicating another similarity between Pacific Islanders and Latter-day Saints.

Service for a day, purpose for the future“There’s new faces all around, and it’s beautiful,” Galicia said of the volunteers all around him. “They are coming to my house and they don’t know me, but by looking at their eyes I know that we have known each other for a long time.”On Saturday, August 4, the group crowding inside the room consisted mostly of members of the West Jordan Utah Park Stake and members of the Islamic Center congregation. They volunteered their Saturday to perform acts of service throughout the West Valley neighborhood where the mosque is located and, together, they represented a united effort to improve interfaith dialogue and build lasting relations among the diverse communities in the Salt Lake Valley.Describing how Tongan families refer to one another, Pastor Ofahengaue said that there is no such thing as cousins. Everyone who is a relative is ‘Tokoua,’ which means brother or sister.Continuing relationships Members of the West Jordan Utah Park Stake carry flowers on the grounds of the Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake Mosque during an all-day service project in the Chesterfield area. Photo by Steve Griffin, Deseret News.Standing in his kitchen as volunteers in yellow hats bustled around him and his furniture, Oscar Galicia expressed his gratitude for the work the West Jordan stake was providing for his family. He explained that as a single father trying to balance going back to school for an engineering degree and taking care of his children, house and yard work have necessarily taken a seat on the backburner.WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH“I think the Utahns and LDS populations have been very supportive and idea sharing over generations,” Imam Mehtar said. “And that if we use this given model that we are seeing here in Utah on a global level, we could create phenomenal changes.”“If we were going to go down the service path for youth conference, we wanted as much as possible for there to be a personal connection,” he said. “We wanted our youth to actually meet these people, to communicate, and to pause from their labors to hear some stories about their lives because we wanted it to touch their hearts. It’s one thing to trim a weed or paint a post, but it’s another to have a conversation with a person.” Aiden Potter, left, and Logan Anderson talk with Nelu Muavao, center, as members of the West Jordan Utah Park Stake work during an all-day service project in the Chesterfield area.           Nardwuar vs. Rex Orange County      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Nardwuar linked up with Rex Orange County after his performance in Vancouver's Vogue Theatre earlier this week. In usual Nardwuar the Human Serviette fashion, he magically knew about about Rex's father, Green Day influence, high school days and more. Rex Orange County is a UK singer-songwriter best known for his songs "Loving is Easy," "Best Friend" and "Sunflower." Tyler, the Creator put Rex on last year with the release of Flower Boy, of which he was featured on "Foreward" and "Boredom." Back in May, he and Randy Newman released a new version of Toy Story song "You've Got a Friend in Me." Rex is currently on the last few dates of his North America tour. He will play at Portland tonight, Santa Ana on August 12th and Los Angeles on the 13th. Watch Nardwuar's interview with Rex above. In other news, Apple CEO Tim Cook says Spotify is "draining the humanity out of music" and worries about the loss of “art and craft.”

3 Reasons Why California's Fire Risk Won't Dampen Anytime Soon      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Wildfires in December are the new norm for California. In the West, they are burning hotter and more intensely than ever due to climate change, and the situation is made worse by the explosion of development in fire prone areas and past firefighting decisions. Here are three reasons the fires are massive and likely won't abate anytime soon. 1. It's nearly impossible to put out a modern mega-fire We can't expect firefighters to control, let alone put out major fires like the Thomas Fire. It's forced thousands to evacuate and destroyed close to 700 homes in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties and has quickly become among the top five largest fires in California history. Of the top 10 biggest fires, eight have occurred in the last 10 years. The Thomas Fire is what experts are now calling a mega-fire. It's fueled by ongoing drought, extremely low humidity and Santa Ana winds that make it nearly impossible for firefighters to stop. Often it's been too dangerous for crews to drop water or

Who was ‘Holy Jim’ In 1888, decidedly unsaintly Union veteran James Smith bought land in a remote canyon between Santiago Peak and Trabuco Creek. He lived there with his wife, Hat, and raised bees. Although reasonably even-tempered, Smith swore frequently, loudly, long-windedly, creatively, and without regard for the company he was in. Historian Jim Sleeper wrote that Smith could “cuss the devil into a bottle and screw on the cap.” Smith usually sported a hat with an upturned brim, a walrus mustache, a jacket with a big plug of tobacco in the pocket, and no shirt. He earned the nicknames “Greasy Jim” and “Cussin’ Jim.” In 1900, government cartographers named the canyon for its best-known resident, but some bureaucrat in Washington undoubtedly changed “Cussin’ ” to “Holy.” About eight years later, Smith retired to Santa Ana. As an old man, he’d get lost downtown and sheriff’s deputies would give him a lift. Jim swore all the way home.

A hard 'climb back into society' for this homeless OC couple       Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
    Orange County homeless couple

Bejuique Shambow and Bobby Austin had been homeless for nearly three years when they were evicted from the Santa Ana riverbed encampment in February 2018. In the six months since then, they've been working hard to put their lives back together. ; Credit: Jill Replogle

At the beginning of this year, Bejuique "Bay" Shambow and Bobby Austin were sleeping in a tent along the Santa Ana riverbed in Orange County. Then, in February, they and hundreds of their fellow campers were kicked out of the encampment by OC officials and given temporary shelter.

Since then, the couple has been working hard to pull themselves up and out of homelessness. They've had treatment for substance abuse and mental health issues, and learned a trade.

It's been a long road. And it's still a struggle.

"It looks really bad on paper for us," Shambow said. "We could look like probably monsters out there. But that's not who we are. And when you're trying to climb back into society, they don't look at who you are, they look at what they can see on paper."

A man who was arrested on suspicion of starting the destructive Holy Fire in the Trabuco Canyon area of Orange County this week is expected to appear in court Thursday. Forrest Gordon Clark, 51, was booked into jail Tuesday on suspicion of two counts of arson, a count of threat to terrorize and a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest, the U.S. Forest Service announced Wednesday. While it is unclear exactly how the blaze was sparked, investigators said they have witness statements corroborating that Clark started it. He is being held on $1 million bail in Santa Ana. Ground rises and falls as water is pumped in and out of reservoirs—as measured in a study that could impact how municipalities manage this crucial resource

Using an unprecedented number of satellite radar images, geophysicists at Caltech have tracked how the ground in Southern California rises and falls as groundwater is pumped in and out of aquifers beneath the surface.

Their findings are presented in a study that tracks deformation of the earth's surface over an 18-year period. The work can be used by water management districts to assess the precise shape and size of aquifers and the impact of the region's water use on those aquifers. The work also reveals what could be a previously unmapped fault running across northeast Orange County.

"What we see through the rising and falling of the ground surface is the elastic response of the land to regular changes in groundwater level," says lead author Bryan Riel (MS '14, PhD '17), who was a graduate student in the lab of Caltech's Mark Simons at the time of the research, and is now a signal analysis engineer at JPL, which is managed by Caltech for NASA. "Because we have data over a long period of time, we were also able to isolate long-term surface deformation signals, including subsidence of the land that seems to be caused by compaction of clay layers in response to background variations in groundwater withdrawal." Riel and Simons were also able to see sharp features where water was not flowing, which can indicate boundaries of aquifers as well as faults.

The study, which was published online on April 30 by the journal Water Resources Research, uses publicly available radar data captured between 1992 and 2011 by European Space Agency satellites. The satellite data was compiled into 881 radar interferograms—images created by bouncing radar signals off of the earth's surface—to track nearly vertical ground motion down to the millimeter with a horizontal resolution of tens of meters, over an area that stretches from San Fernando, northwest of downtown Los Angeles, down to Irvine, in Orange County.

When all of the images are stitched together, they show the ground beneath Southern California rising and falling annually, like a giant breathing in and out. The results were checked against GPS measurements taken by the Orange County Water District (OCWD) and the Water Replenishment District of Southern California, which corroborated the findings. The periodic rising and falling of the ground tells the story of the management of Southern California's aquifers and how that management has changed over time, says Simons, the John W. and Herberta M. Miles Professor of Geophysics at Caltech and JPL chief scientist.

"At the beginning of the study period, we see big sinusoids—higher highs and lower lows. Toward the later half of the study, that flattens out a bit, indicating that water control districts were more actively managing aquifers, and making sure to put water back into them instead of just taking it out," Simons says.

Roy Herndon, chief hydrogeologist for the OCWD, says that his team works to make sure that the ground never sinks too far—a development from which it might never recover.

"We suspect that the geology of our basin might allow subsidence to occur if we allowed too much groundwater to be pumped out but never refilled it. We have clays and silts that can compress and compact with time," Herndon says.

That strategy is codified in the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), signed into law by California Governor Jerry Brown in 2014, which dictates that groundwater managers need to avoid permanent lowering of the ground level. The phenomenon has plagued the San Joaquin Valley of Central California for generations. Soil compaction driven by a shrinking water table has caused the ground in the area to subside by as much as 28 feet, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Herndon says that the study by Riel, Simons, and co-authors—and other surveys like it—will help water districts make sure that their water management strategies are effective at avoiding such soil compaction in California.

While the rising and falling of the ground was to be expected, the radar data also showed some unexpected features, Simons says, including a sharp boundary at the edge of an aquifer, which could indicate a buried fault along the eastern edge of a basin where the Santa Ana River passes through the Santa Ana/Garden Grove area. In addition, the map revealed a small area with anomalously large ground level uplift that turned out to be caused by petroleum operations pumping oil out and water in.

Riel, Simons, and co-authors relied upon data from ESA satellites. Meanwhile, JPL, NASA, and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) are planning to launch a new radar satellite called NISAR in early 2022 that will provide observations from two directions every 12 days—providing higher-quality, higher-resolution data than have previously been available.

"With that kind of data, we'll be able to paint an even clearer picture that could reveal even more about the ground beneath our feet," Simons says.

The study is titled "Quantifying Ground Deformation in the Los Angeles and Santa Ana Coastal Basins Due to Groundwater Withdrawal." Other co-authors include Daniel Ponti of the USGS; JPL's Piyush Agram, who is a visiting associate at Caltech; and Romain Jolivet of the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, France. Support for this research came from NASA.
