Transit Death Spiral Continues      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Transit ridership has been dropping for four years and increased subsidies won’t fix the problem. Data released by the Federal Transit Administration yesterday show that nationwide ridership was 3.1 percent less in June 2018 than it had been in June 2017. Ridership fell for all major modes of transit, including commuter rail (-2.6%), heavy rail (-2.5%), light rail (-3.3%), and buses (-3.8%).

June 2018 had one fewer work day than June 2017, which may account for part of the ridership decline. But ridership in the first six months of 2018 was 3.0 percent less than the same months of 2017, and again ridership declined for all major modes of transit.

As in previous months, I’ve posted an enhanced spreadsheet that has all of the raw monthly data from the FTA spreadsheet but includes annual totals from 2002 through 2018 in columns GZ through HP, modal totals in rows 2125 through 2131, transit agency totals in rows 2140 through 3139, and urban area totals for the nation’s 200 largest urban areas in rows 3141 through 3340. The same enhancements are included on the “VRM” or vehicle-revenue miles worksheet.

June 30 is the end of the fiscal year for many if not most transit agencies, so now we can compare transit’s 2018 fiscal year performance against 2017 (see columns HU to HW in the spreadsheet). Nationwide ridership in FY 2018 declined 2.7 percent from 2017 and of course it fell for hundreds of transit agencies.

Of the nation’s 50 largest urban areas, June ridership grew in eleven, January through June ridership grew in ten, and fiscal year ridership grew in just six. Seattle is one of the six, having grown by 1.4 percent, the others being Pittsburgh (0.2%), Providence (1.1%), Nashville (3.5%), Hartford (3.3%), and Raleigh (6.1%). Except Seattle, these urban areas have seen declines in other recent years so this increase is not a great victory and probably won’t be sustained for long in the future.

As I’ve noted elsewhere, Seattle has enjoyed steady growth in transit ridership not because it built light rail but because it has increased downtown jobs from 216,000 in 2010 to 292,000 in 2017. Downtown jobs are the key to transit ridership because most transit agencies run hub-and-spoke systems focused on central city downtowns. But replicating Seattle’s downtown growth is impossible in most regions, as all but six American cities have far fewer downtown jobs; nor would most people agree to accept the costs Seattle is paying in terms of subsidies to new employers, traffic congestion, and high housing prices resulting from land-use restrictions that prevent jobs and housing from moving to the suburbs.

Fiscal year ridership declines in many urban areas were larger than the increases in the few regions where ridership grew. The worst were Charlotte (-15.1%), Cleveland (-11.7%), Miami (-10.3%), St. Louis (-8.2%), Memphis (-7.7%), Jacksonville (-7.0%), Baltimore (-6.6%), Richmond (-6.6%), Philadelphia (-6.5%), Cincinnati (-6.2%), Virginia Beach (-6.1%), Dallas-Ft. Worth (-5.9%), Phoenix (-5.6%), and Boston (-5.2%). This is in addition to significant declines in all of these urban areas between 2014 and 2017.

Officials at the Charlotte Area Transit System must be proud that the light-rail expansion they opened in March led to a 65 percent increase in June light-rail ridership over June 2017. Yet this was a hollow victory as the agency lost 36,000 more bus riders than it gained in rail riders.

Transit agencies get about a third of their operating funds from fare revenues, and the decline in ridership has forced many to reduce service. The vehicle-revenue miles page shows that nationwide transit service declined by 5.1 percent in June 2018 vs. 2017. While some people blame the ridership declines on the service reductions, at least one study says it is the other way around: service has declined because riders abandoned transit, forcing agencies to cut back on spending.

Transit ridership has declined in many urban areas despite increasing service. Among many others, Phoenix increased 2018 service by 11.0 percent yet lost 5.6 percent of its riders; San Jose increased service by 3.1 percent but lost 4.2 percent of its riders; Indianapolis increased service by 4.3 percent yet lost 3.9 percent of its riders; Austin increased service by 6.5 percent yet lost 1.1 percent of its riders.

It appears that ride hailing is the principal factor in ridership declines. A recent study estimates that ride hailing grew by 710 million trips in 2017. If just 36 percent of those trips were people who would otherwise would have taken transit, then ride hailing is responsible for all of the decline in 2017. Declining ridership leads to service reductions, which results in more ridership declines, producing a death spiral of revenue shortfalls followed by service reductions followed by more revenue shortfalls.

Some cities are supplementing transit revenues by taxing ride-hailing companies, which I’ve noted elsewhere is a little like taxing word processors to protect the typewriter industry or pocket calculators to protect the slide rule industry. At least one city is looking at taxing marijuana to subsidize transit.

It doesn’t really matter. The decline in transit ridership is beyond the control of transit agencies, and increasing subsidies to what is already the nation’s most-heavily-subsidized form of transportation won’t make much difference. The only question is when will appropriators realize that it is pointless to continue subsidizing a dying industry and start winding down those subsidies.

Ford Celebrates the 10 Millionth Mustang      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Henry Ford began manufacturing automobiles for a curious American population when he invented the assembly line production process in 1913.

There certainly were a number of legendary vehicles made in those early years, perhaps most notably the Model T.  But it wasn’t until 51 years later that Ford Motor Co. revealed its first sports car in grand fashion at the 1964 World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

For Ford, persistence certainly paid off.

The 10 millionth Ford Mustang rolled off the assembly line at the revolutionary automaker’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant on Wednesday. It continues to be the best-selling muscle car of all time.

Like its iconic rival —  the Chevrolet Corvette — the Ford Mustang has always been manufactured in America. During its 54-year lifespan, the Mustang has been built in San Jose, Calif., Metuchen, N.J. and at the original production home of Ford in Dearborn, Mich. Production was consolidated at Flat Rock Assembly Plant in 2004, located about 25 miles southwest of Detroit.

"Mustang is the heart and soul of this company and a favorite around the world," said Jim Farley, the company's president of global markets. "I get the same thrill seeing a Mustang roll down a street in Detroit, London, or Beijing that I felt when I bought my first car — a 1966 Mustang coupe that I drove across the country as a teenager. Mustang is a smile-maker in any language."

{media_1}

Ford took time on Wednesday to celebrate the Mustang, including with a parade from Ford’s Dearborn headquarters to the Flat Rock Assembly plant that featured a Mustang from every model year.

Pony car No. 10 million is painted Wimbledon White, just like the sports car Ford recognizes as the first production vehicle stamped with serial number ending in 001. It is a 2019 GT convertible, with a 460-horsepower V8 and a six-speed manual transmission.

The Mustang has come a long way in 54 years, when the original V8 engine possessed just 164 horsepower and a transmission with half the forward speeds.

“Many vehicles have hit the 10-million mark over the years, but they tend to be either practical family cars – like the Volkswagen Passat and Honda Accord – or long-running utilitarian haulers like the Ford F-150,” Matt Anderson, curator of transportation at the Henry Ford Museum told the Detroit Free Press. “Mustang is a fun car, something owners tend to purchase as a second – or maybe third – vehicle rather than a one-and-only daily drive. That makes Mustang’s 10 million milestone all the more impressive.”

Court upholds ex-Stanford swimmer's sex assault conviction      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
SAN FRANCISCO – An appeals court on Wednesday rejected a former Stanford University swimmer's bid for a new trial and upheld his sexual assault and attempted rape convictions.

The three-judge panel of the 6th District Court of Appeal in San Jose ruled Wednesday that there was "substantial evidence" that Brock Turner received a fair trial.

In 2016, a jury convicted Turner of sexually assaulting an intoxicated and unconscious woman outside an on-campus fraternity party.

The case got national attention after the victim's powerful statement, which she read in court before Turner was sentenced, was shared widely online.

She recounted the assault, her treatment by investigators and the ordeal of facing questions about her sexual activity and drinking habits. It quickly went viral.

"Instead of taking time to heal, I was taking time to recall the night in excruciating detail, in order to prepare for the attorney's questions that would be invasive, aggressive and designed to steer me off course, to contradict myself, my sister, phrased in ways to manipulate my answers," she wrote. "This was a game of strategy, as if I could be tricked out of my own worth."

The Associated Press doesn't generally identify sexual abuse victims.

Judge Aaron Persky rejected a prosecutor's demand for a lengthy prison term and instead sentenced Turner to six months in jail. He was released from jail in September 2016 after serving three months.

Persky's sentence sparked nationwide outrage by those who felt it too lenient.

Voters recalled Persky in June.

The sentence was not part of the appeal and the judges didn't address it.

Turner filed an appeal in December seeking a new trial, arguing that the evidence presented at his trial didn't support his convictions. The jury convicted him of sexually assaulting an intoxicated victim, sexually assaulting an unconscious victim and attempting to rape her.

Judge Franklin Elia writing for the unanimous panel said there was "substantial evidence" to support conviction of all three charges. In particular, the judge pointed out that Turner tried to run from two graduate students who confronted him assaulting the then-22-year-old woman. The judge wrote that the victim was slurring her speech when she left a fraternity party with Turner and the graduate students testified the victim appeared unconscious when they showed up, chased Turner and held him down until police arrived. He denied running when questioned by police.

"He did not explain or defend himself to them," Elia wrote. "And he lied to police about running."

Turner could petition the California Supreme Court to consider his appeal. Turner's attorney Eric Multhaup didn't return a phone call Wednesday.

Stanford law professor Michelle Dauber, who led the judge's recall campaign, called on Turner to drop any further appeals.

"The appellate court has now rejected that idea and I think everyone, including Brock Turner, would be better served by accepting the jury's verdict and moving on," she said.

Turner lives outside Dayton, Ohio, with his parents. He is required to register as a sex offender for life.

A career in “business” is broad enough that it can mean just about anything. Hundreds, if not thousands of jobs, can be classified as “business” related work ranging from being an accountant to a chief medical officer.

We analyzed data from Priceonomics customer Business Student.com, a company that has created an index of 127 “business” careers, where they track the average salaries and how they vary by location. While these jobs are by no means comprehensive of all jobs in business, they comprise a representative index of business careers and their salaries, that we call the “Business Jobs Index.”

So what are the highest and lowest paying jobs in our index? Which cities have highest paying business jobs and where you’ll still have money leftover after paying rent if you live there?

Across our business index, the highest paying job paid $187,000 on average in the United States (Medical Director). The lowest paying business job we track is Security Supervisor, which pays $31,000 per year. The average business job we track pays $75,000 per year.

Across the country, the highest paying business jobs are in Washington, DC, California, New York, and Massachusetts. The states with the lowest paying business jobs are Montana, Idaho, and North Dakota. We also analyzed 215 of the largest job markets in America to find the cities that have the highest business salaries; all five of the top cities with the highest paying business jobs are located in Silicon Valley, with Palo Alto, CA having the highest paying jobs of all.

Lastly, we found there were a number of cities like San Francisco, Miami and Los Angeles that have high paying business jobs, but most of your income will go to paying rent.

***

Before diving into the data, a brief note on the methodology of our Business Jobs Index. The index is comprised of 127 popular business jobs.

For each of these jobs, we track the average salary on Indeed.com by location.

In our index, the highest paying jobs are senior positions in the medical industry or “C-suite” position like Chief Marketing Officer. The vast majority of the business jobs in our index pay less than a $100,000 salary however.

Popular jobs like Social Media Manager, Accountant, and HR Coordinator all pay less than $50,000 per year.

Which states pay the most in our Business Jobs Index? The following chart shows the average salary of business jobs by state, ranked from highest to lowest:

Washington DC, California, New York, and Massachusetts are the four highest paying places for business jobs, where the typical position pays around $90,000 per year.  The lowest paying states for business jobs are mostly in the MidWest.

Next, how much do business salaries vary by city? We analyze the average business salary on the 215 largest job markets we track. The chart below shows the cities with the highest and lowest salaries:

Almost unbelievable, the top nine highest paying cities for business jobs are all in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The high cost of living and number technology employers have catapulted business salaries in the Bay to over $100,000 per year and nearly twice as much as cities on the “lowest” business salaries list.

However, places that pay a lot of money also tend to be very expensive. We were curious, after you have to pay your rent, how much of your salary is left for anything else?

Below, we show the average salary by city, the average monthly rent for a two bedroom apartment according to Rent Jungle, and how much money is left over on an annual basis. For it, we looked at the top 65 largest markets on our site (excluding Athens, GA where there was no rent data available).  Keep in mind this is a preliminary analysis that doesn’t include taxes, child care, partner-earnings, or other factors that can influence cost of living.

The cities where you have the most money leftover after rent are a mix of ones with high salaries (Palo Alto, San Jose, Sunnyvale) and ones with decently high salaries but low rents (Detroit, Chicago, Las Vegas). Considering that some of the states these cities are in have relatively high state income taxes (California) and others have zero state income tax (Texas, Nevada), further analysis should include taxes and other expenses.

And which cities do you have the least money leftover after rent? Below are the top ten:

The places where most of your paycheck goes to rent is actually cities with high salaries but very high rent. Only College Station and Orlando have relatively low rent and make the list because of low salaries. Most of the other cities are places like San Francisco with high salaries but exorbitant rent ($4,509 for an average two bedroom apartment rental).

***

Conclusion

There is a huge variety of business jobs out there with an equal variance in salaries. Not all jobs pay a lot, but some do, especially in California, New York, Massachusetts and Washington, DC.

However, cities that pay a lot in salaries also typically have very high cost of living. The city with the highest business salaries is Palo Alto, but it’s also a place with some of the highest property prices in the country. Additionally, some places like San Francisco and Los Angeles do have high salaries, but you don’t take home very much money after your rent.

Curious how much money you’ll have leftover from your paycheck after you pay rent? Here’s the list of all the cities we analyzed:

The Impact will retain a percentage of Oduro's budget charge for the 2018 season and look set to use the acquisition of a 2018 international roster spot from the Portland Timbers to put former Manchester City defender Sagna on its roster.           TESTAMENT Frontman: 'It's Time To Buckle Down And Try To Get Some Music Written'      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
TESTAMENT frontman Chuck Billy spoke to "Talking Metal" about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the follow-up to 2016's "Brotherhood Of The Snake" album. "There's no lyrics, but I'm sure Eric's [Peterson, guitar] got riffs going, and so does Alex [Skolnick, guitar]," he said (hear audio below). "After the SLAYER tour, we're not taking any more tours. It's that time to buckle down and try to get some music written. Our hopes and dreams would be to get in the studio by January and have an album out by the summer; that would be our ultimate dream. But we'll see what happens. It's tough making promises, 'cause you never know what's gonna happen." According to Chuck, TESTAMENT's songs are "sometimes" finished in the studio while others are worked out beforehand. "It all depends how much those guys have worked on it," he said. "But a lot of the times, Alex has brought completed demoed songs. So it all depends. I mean, last [album], Alex didn't contribute as much to the record. But it's wide open this year." Billy also confirmed that TESTAMENT is planning to use British metal producer Andy Sneap (JUDAS PRIEST, ACCEPT, ARCH ENEMY, SAXON, MEGADETH) once again to mix the upcoming album. "There's always that thought and talk [about going to someone else], but at the end of the day, we always go, 'You know what? I don't see anything wrong with what Andy did. So let's continue on,'" he explained. "Like they say, you don't mess with it if it ain't broke." He added: "[Andy's] got a good grip on our sound and we work well together. At this point, unless we had issues, there's really no reason to try to go somewhere else. So I don't see it yet." TESTAMENT's current U.S. tour as the support act for SLAYER runs through August 26 in San Jose, California. "Brotherhood Of The Snake" was recorded under the watchful eyes of producer Juan Urteaga (EXODUS, HEATHEN, MACHINE HEAD), Peterson and Billy and was mixed and mastered by Sneap.

SAN FRANCISCO – An appeals court on Wednesday rejected a former Stanford University swimmer’s bid for a new trial and upheld his sexual assault and attempted rape convictions.

The three-judge panel of the 6th District Court of Appeal in San Jose ruled Wednesday that there was “substantial evidence” that Brock Turner received a fair trial.

In 2016, a jury convicted Turner of sexually assaulting an intoxicated and unconscious woman outside an on-campus fraternity party.

The case got national attention after the victim’s powerful statement, which she read in court before Turner was sentenced, was shared widely online.

She recounted the assault, her treatment by investigators and the ordeal of facing questions about her sexual activity and drinking habits. It quickly went viral.

“Instead of taking time to heal, I was taking time to recall the night in excruciating detail, in order to prepare for the attorney’s questions that would be invasive, aggressive and designed to steer me off course, to contradict myself, my sister, phrased in ways to manipulate my answers,” she wrote. “This was a game of strategy, as if I could be tricked out of my own worth.”

The Associated Press doesn’t generally identify sexual abuse victims.

Judge Aaron Persky rejected a prosecutor’s demand for a lengthy prison term and instead sentenced Turner to six months in jail. He was released from jail in September 2016 after serving three months.

Persky’s sentence sparked nationwide outrage by those who felt it too lenient.

Voters recalled Persky in June.

The sentence was not part of the appeal and the judges didn’t address it.

Turner filed an appeal in December seeking a new trial, arguing that the evidence presented at his trial didn’t support his convictions. The jury convicted him of sexually assaulting an intoxicated victim, sexually assaulting an unconscious victim and attempting to rape her.

Judge Franklin Elia writing for the unanimous panel said there was “substantial evidence” to support conviction of all three charges.

“He did not explain or defend himself to them,” Elia wrote. “And he lied to police about running.”

Turner could petition the California Supreme Court to consider his appeal. Turner’s attorney Eric Multhaup didn’t return a phone call Wednesday.

Stanford law professor Michelle Dauber, who led the judge’s recall campaign, called on Turner to drop any further appeals.

“The appellate court has now rejected that idea and I think everyone, including Brock Turner, would be better served by accepting the jury’s verdict and moving on,” she said.

Turner lives outside Dayton, Ohio, with his parents. He is required to register as a sex offender for life.

Brock Turner loses appeal; remains guilty of sexual assault      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

SAN FRANCISCO — An appeals court on Wednesday rejected a former Stanford University swimmer's bid for a new trial and upheld his sexual assault and attempted rape convictions.

Daniel Sedin Jersey . With newly minted president of hockey operations Trevor Linden looking on from above one day after being handed the keys to the franchise, it was more of the same on Thursday night. http://www.authentichockeyshopcanucks.co...ga-Jersey/ .S. -- Carl-Antoine Delisle snapped a tie in the third period with his second goal of the game to lead the Tigres past Cape Breton 4-3 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Wednesday as Victoriaville won its eighth in a row.As Manchester United were edging Manchester City in a five-goal thriller, Juventus were triumphing in the Turin derby and Barcelona squeaked home 1-0 at the Nou Camp, thousands of miles away in California something far more soccer-significant was occurring. The post-match fireworks were purchased. Final preparations were in place. The FIFA president was in town. It was April 6, 1996. Spartan Stadium, the home of San Jose State University, was about to play host to the inaugural match in Major League Soccer when the hometown Clash took on D.C. United in front of a sold-out crowd approaching 32,000. You have to trace it all the way back to American Independence Day, 1988 for when the first MLS seeds were sown. This was the day the US beat back other bids, including one from Brazil, for the rights to host the 1994 World Cup finals. Those rights came with a caveat, one condition from the world governing body: FIFA mandated the United States Soccer Federation to structure a top-flight league. Easier said than done. The year before those 1994 World Cup finals, which eventually would go on to draw a record number of fans, MLS hired its first employee - Mark Abbott. A lawyer by trade, Abbotts soccer connection came via a law colleague, Alan Rothenberg, who was also the president of the USSF. With Rothenberg appointed as CEO of USA 94, it was left to Abbott to draw up MLSs constitution. Then, in his spare time, Abbott criss-crossed the nation in the search for founding investors. A total of 10 clubs took part in that inaugural season.  D.C. United, defeated 1-0 during the season opener in San Jose, would eventually go on and be crowned champions when they beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-1 in the first MLS Cup. Saturday afternoon in Seattle, MLSs 19th season gets underway when the Sounders, a club like the Whitecaps celebrating their 40th-anniversary, entertain the current champions, Sporting Kansas City. To show the measure of how far MLS has journeyed in the intervening years, MLS Cup 1996, which was played in Foxboro, Massachusetts, attracted a crowd of just over 35,000. Today, the Sounders claim that same amount of supporters in season ticket holders. This is not to say that MLS has not had its share of let downs and disappointments. The leagues worst moment happened just ahead of the 2002 season with contraction occurring and gone were the Miami Fusion and the Tampa Bay Mutiny. Long gone, though, are the days MLS teams were merely tenants in NFL buildings - begging their landlords to go easy on the rent and allow them access to the stadiums to play matches on days and at a time of day which were most preferable to attracting in the fans the league so desperately needed. Like all sports teams who look to build on the previous seasons accomplishments, MLS will, as well, in 2014.  Nobody needs reminding that we are in a World Cup year and the mommentum those previous tournaments have provided the league. Markus Granlund Jersey. As it did for South Africa 2010, MLS will shut down for the opening fortnight of group games this June. During this time, the league has mandated each of its clubs, along with the players to be active in their communities. One of Toronto FCs newest designated players, Jermain Defoe, was part of Englands squad for their World Cup warm-up friendly against Denmark at Wembley in midweek. You can be guaranteed that, come the conclusion of Brazil 2014, a number of other players will make the transition to MLS. The most famous of the class of South Africa 2010 to do just that was Thierry Henry, who went into that World Cup still a Barcelona player. Three days after the World Cup final, Henry was introduced as a member of the New York Red Bulls (who visit the Whitecaps on Saturday, live on TSN at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt). This year is also a pivotal one for soccer in Canada and not just for our three MLS clubs. In January, the Canadian Soccer Association announced it will bid to host the 2026 World Cup finals. In August, we host the FIFA U-20 Womens World Cup finals and, in April, the Ottawa Fury kick off their inaugural NASL campaign. As for our three MLS clubs, Toronto FC have set the bar awfully high. Whilst they sit out the opening weekends fixtures and have a final week of preparation before opening their season in Seattle next Saturday, nothing short of a playoff berth will suffice. With new head coaches at the helm in Vancouver and Montreal, expectations are less lofty. The so-called opinion makers across the league have already written off their chances to make the post-season. However, thats on paper and we all know matches are won and lost on the pitch. Flying under the radar could work to their advantage. As MLS has blossomed and flourished over the years, it has given rise to allow the soccer-playing kids right across North America to dream and believe that they, one day, can fulfil their childhood ambitions. Tell Patrice Bernier when he was a prospect in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League that one day he would share a flight with the 1993 Stanley Cup-winning captain of the Montreal Canadiens, Guy Carbonneau. The Impact left for Dallas yesterday morning where they open their season on Saturday night. Bernier is now the captain of a club that just so happen to play in one of the best attended leagues in all of world football. Then, share a thought for Matt Besler, who will lead the MLS Cup holders Sporting KC out onto the pitch in Seattle on Saturday afternoon. During that inaugural MLS season in 1996, Sporting KC were known as the Kansas City Wiz. Playing their matches out of the NFL Chiefs Arrowhead Stadium , where a nine-year-old Besler served as a ballboy. CHICAGO - A series which once seemed firmly in the hands of the Los Angeles Kings has been stretched to the limit. Alonzo Mourning Jersey . Now the defending champion Chicago Blackhawks will try to complete a monumental comeback when they host the Kings in Sundays Game 7 battle at United Center. You can listen to all the action on TSN Radio 1050 beginning at 8pm et/5pm pt. The Kings grabbed a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference finals after Mondays 5-2 home victory, but Chicago has responded with two close victories to even this best-of-seven set at three games apiece. The winner of Sundays clash will meet the New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup Finals, after the Blueshirts eliminated Montreal in six games for the Eastern Conference title. Chicago, winner of two of the leagues last four Stanley Cup titles, first staved off elimination with a 5-4 double-overtime win Wednesday on home ice and did it again with Fridays 4-3 decision in Los Angeles. The Blackhawks hope to complete the comeback Sunday in the Windy City, where the club boasts an 8-1 record this postseason and a 19-3 mark since the start of the 2013 playoffs. The Blackhawks also hold a 13-0 mark after Game 4 in each of the past two postseasons and is seeking another successful comeback from down 3-1 after recording the first one in franchise history last spring. Chicago lost three of the first four games in last years conference semifinals against Detroit, but won the final three tilts and claimed Game 7 in overtime en route to winning its second Cup since 2010. If Chicago wins Sundays contest it will become just the second team in NHL history to overcome a 3-1 series deficit and win the conference finals. Only the 2000 New Jersey Devils, who beat Philadelphia, have overcome a 3-1 series deficit in a conference final and advanced to the fourth and final round. The Kings, meanwhile, hope to regroup Sunday and avoid being eliminated by Chicago in the West finals for a second straight year. Los Angeles, the 2012 Cup champions, fell in five games to the Blackhawks in 2013 and appeared well on its way towards exacting revenge for that loss before the last two games. With the Game 6 loss, L.A. became just the third team in NHL history to have its first three playoff series advance to a seventh game in one playoff year. The 1993 Toronto Maple Leafs and 2002 Colorado Avalanche previously saw each of their in-conference playoff matchups reach Game 7s, with the Leafs losing to the Kings and Avs to the Red Wings. "Weve got to win. There is no other option," Kings star defenseman Drew Doughty said of Game 7. "I think were going to have our best effort of the series next game. All of the guys are going to step up to the plate. Our leaders are going to lead the way. Everyone else is going to follow. Were going to have our best effort." The Kings, of course, were only the fourth team in NHL history to erase a 3-0 deficit to win a playoff series when they beat San Jose in the opening round and then came back from 3-2 down to eliminate Anaheim in seven games during the conference semis. Both of L.A.s previous Game 7 victories in this postseason also came on the road. "We know theyre a resilient group," Chicago forward Patrick Kane said after leading his team to the Game 6 triumph. "Theyve won two Game 7s on the road in their first two series. Its going to be a tough one. Right now were happy we got the win, but it doesnt mean anything because we havent won anything yet. Well get ready for the next one and we know theyll bring the best for Game 7." Kane, last springs Conn Smythe winner, has been a big part of Chicagos revival in this series, recording seven points over the last two games. After notching four assists in the Game 5 victory, Kane scored two goals and added an assist on Friday. Kane assisted on the tying goal in Game 6 and then netted the game-winning score late in the third period to force tonights winner-take-all battle. The speedy forward had been held without a point in the first three games of this series, but has amassed eight points (2G, 6A) over the last three contests. Ben Smith and Duncan Keith added Game 6 tallies for the Blackhawks, while Corey Crawford picked up the win thanks to 26 saves. Los Angeles scored the only goal of the first period before Chicago carried a 2-1 lead into the second intermission. The Kings then grabbed a 3-2 lead with a pair of goals in the first eight minutes of the third period before the Blackhawks mounted a comeback. "I dont think anyone lost confidence or got down after those two goals they scored in the third," Crawford said. "If anything we kept pressing even harder. Some great shots by Duncs and Kaner, some great plays, and we were able to shut then down at the end." Kanes slick pass on the left wing found Keith at the inner edge of the circle for a successful wrister to knot the game with 8:26 showing. Kane struck once more with 3:45 left in regulation. He trailed a Brandon Saad rush on the right wing, accepted a back pass, then moved from the circle into the middle and beat Jonathan Quick with a wrister to give the Blackhawks a 4-3 edge. "Its unbelievable, I looked at him, I think it was about a minute left, I think there was a stoppage of play and I almost started laughing," Toews said of Kane. "Its amazing what he can do in these big games, when our season is on the line and nobody else seems to be able to do it the same way he does it, its pretty amazing." Doughty, Dwight King and Alec Martinez scored for the Kings, while Quick stopped only 21 shots in defeat. Doughty has collected seven points (3G, 4A) in the last five games. The loss didnt deter Doughty from adding confidently: "Weve had two chances to close out this series and were not going to blow the third one." The Stanley Cup Finals will begin Wednesday night with the Rangers visiting the winner of Sundays Game 7 for the first two tests of the championship round. Custom Charlotte Hornets Jerseys . Kemba Walker Jersey .com) - Sergio Agueros 63rd-minute goal was enough to lift Manchester City to a 1-0 win over 10-man Manchester United on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium. http://www.hornetsteamproshop.com/Cheap-...ts-Jersey/ . Tristan Jackson returned a missed field goal 129 yards early in the fourth quarter as the Roughriders beat the B.C.PARIS – Eugenie Bouchard grew up admiring Maria Sharapova. "First, I noticed her cute dresses and things like that when I was young," said the 20-year-old Canadian, who met Sharapova when she was just eight-years-old at a tournament in Miami. "As a child, I looked up to her and I remember watching her in the finals of Wimbledon and thought what she was doing was so cool and I wanted to do the same thing." Bouchard and Sharapova will play on Thursday in the French Open semi-finals. It is the second straight year that the two have met at Roland Garros with the Russian prevailing in straight sets in the second round a year ago. "For sure I respect her," said Bouchard. "But now were in the semis of a Grand Slam, so Im going to respect her but not put her too high on a pedestal and really just battle. Thats what its going to be." Sharapova may be seeded seventh, but she has been widely considered the favourite to win the title since the top three seeds – Serena Williams, Li Na and Agnieszka Radwanska – all lost in the first three rounds. And Sharapova is favoured to beat Bouchard (-325, 4/13 per BoDog) for the same reason she is expected to hoist the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen on Saturday: she has the experience. She made the finals here a year ago. She won the whole thing just two years ago. At the age of 27, she has already won the career slam and has an Olympic silver medal on her resume.  "Achieving what she has, she is of course very strong mentally," said Bouchard. "It is one of her strengths. Im going to be ready for another battle. You know, the semis of a Grand Slam, thats what you have to expect. "Im just looking forward to the challenge." Bouchard is earning her own reputation for poise under pressure. She overcame a 2-5 deficit (two breaks) and a set point to win the opening frame against clay-court specialist Carla Suarez Navarro in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. Then, after dropping the second set 2-6, Bouchard dug out of a 1-4 hole in the deciding set by winning 12 straight points. She then served to stay in the match at 4-5, holding easily.  "At the end of the day, whether I win or lose, I want to at least leave it all out there and try and at least battle. Charlotte Hornets Jerseys. Im proud of the way I did that in both the first and third. Shes a great player and a really good clay courter, as well. I knew it was a tough battle, and thats exactly what it was today. Im just proud of the way I stayed in there." Bouchard appeared to show some nerves after wasting a match point, serving at 6-5, with a double fault. She was asked if that was a sign she is, after all, human. "I show Im human all the time," Bouchard noted with a smile. "Yeah, you know, its one of those things. I didnt really worry about it. I think thats the most important thing: I didnt see it as a big deal, and I just regrouped for the next point, which allowed me to just give me a chance to get in a position to have a match point again. "Even on the second match point I missed a ball, but I was trying to go for it, so I didnt worry too much, either. "I think that was a bit the theme the whole match: even if I was down 5-2 or 4-1 in the third, not to worry too much, keep going, keep going, keep going, and it paid off in the end." Bouchards mental toughness and aggressive play have earned her comparisons to Sharapova. Does she like that? "There are positives and negatives," Bouchard said. "Of course shes a great champion, so to be seen as the next of someone who has won four slams and has been No. 1 in the world, its a compliment. "But at the same time, of course, Im my own person and I just want to be myself on the court, and you know, try and achieve what I want to achieve and just be seen as that." Bouchard is the only womens player to make the semis at both slams this season. She is part of the future of womens tennis and looking to prove the future is now. Bouchard readily admits that back in January when she made that magical run to the Australian Open semis, she suffered from a bit of stage fright at the start of a straight-sets loss to Li Na. "I was maybe a little bit frozen at the beginning of that match," she said. "Ill be much more ready this time." Zinedine Zidane admitted his team had to produce a good display as they ended a run of four successive draws with a 6-1 hammering of Real Betis in Seville. D.J. Fluker Jersey . There had been whispers of criticism directed at Zidane after a 100 per cent start to the campaign after four games in La Liga tailed off disappointingly, with a lacklustre draw at home to Eibar before the international break especially unconvincing. But the 11-time European champions underlined their quality on Saturday night as Isco scored a brace and there was a goal apiece for Raphael Varane, Karim Benzema, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo as they remained second behind Atletico Madrid on goal difference. Watch NOW TV Watch Sky Sports for just £6.99. No contract. I am very pleased - after four draws we had to play a game like that, Zidane said in quotes reported by Marca. We played with the necessary intensity. There are no small teams any more but we started strongly and it can be difficult for the opponent when you start that way. Real Madrid scored their fourth against Real Betis with a superb counter attack Varane headed in the opener in the fourth minute and Benzema added the second 28 minutes later, with Toni Kroos supplying both assists. Marcelo scuffed in a third from an offside position but Iscos fourth was a thing of beauty as his tap-in rounded off a lightning-fast, end-to-end team move. The former Malaga man, who had been on the periphery of Zidanes squad in the early weeks of the season, curled in a brilliant fifth after Alvaro Cejudo had pulled one back for Betis.Ronaldo had the final word with his second La Liga goal, bursting through on goal and powering a shot past Antonio Adan. Heres a collectors item as Ronaldo misses an open goal in Real Madrids match with Real Betis The players are good and intelligent, and we knew we had to play in that (intensive) manner. We have to be satisfied with that result and use it as a reference point for the rest of the season. To win like that away from home is not easy.On the performance of Isco, Zidane added: He did well and I am happy for his goals and his display in general. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his fourth goal of the season for Real Madrid Ronaldos form has been under the microscope and his reaction to being substituted away to Las Palmas earlier in the season was widely scrutinised, but Zidane is content with the contribution from his Portuguese superstar.I dont look at him with even a little bit of anxiety - its normal that he wants to score goals, the Frenchman added. It is important that he conveys a positive energy to the rest of the team, and I am happy for his goal. However, the 38-year-old is in no hurry to sign with another team. "Im not in a rush. This will be my last contract, so I want to do it right," said Burris on Thursday. http://www.seahawksauthenticofficialonli...ersey.html . Still, Milan remained five points behind city rival Inter Milan in the race for fifth place and the final Europa League berth, after Inter beat 10-man Parma 2-0. Meanwhile, Paul Pogba led the way as Juventus stayed on course for a third consecutive title with a 1-0 win over relegation-threatened Bologna. Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. This week they discuss Jason Collins ignoring homophobic slurs, Sam Tagesons big day with the San Jose Sharks, Alex Rodriguez in the news again, and Sidney Crosbys Hart Trophy case. Bruce Arthur, National Post My thumb is up to Jason Collins of the Brooklyn Nets. Remember Jason Collins? Big guy, sets screens, commits fouls, plays defence, and recently the first openly gay player in any of North Americas four major sports leagues. He never did much as a player; he still doesnt. And in his first 10 games since signing with Brooklyn, Collins hasnt been a distraction, hasnt created a media circus, and says that only one opposing player has thrown homophobic slurs his way. And how Collins reacted to that was important. He could have named names, damaged the guys reputation, and cost him a big league fine. Instead, in the manner of Jackie Robinson, Collins ignored the slurs. He just played, with dignity. By doing nothing Jason Collins showed that nameless idiot what mattered, and that it wasnt him. Steve Simmons, Sun Media My thumb is up to the San Jose Sharks, and not because theyre my pick to win the Stanley Cup. Well get to that in another show. This week the Sharks made the most meaningful transaction since the trade deadline. They signed 17-year-old Sam Tageson to a one-day contract, and turned one day into a lifetime of memories for many. Tageson was born with a debilitating heart condition that prevents strenuous activity. But against his doctors advice, he has never stopped playing hockey. The Sharks signed him to a one-day deal, had him practice with the teamm, dress with the club, hang around the players, and then skate out through that gigantic shark head and stand at the blue line for the national anthem. Sebastian Janikowski Seahawks Jersey. The crowd, the bench, the building, went crazy. For one night, there was crying in hockey and everybody loved it. Dave Naylor, TSN Radio 1050 My thumb is down to Alex Rodgriguez, who once again is embroiled in controversy, this time over supposed unpaid legal fees racked up while he was trying to defend himself from the season-long suspension. If you thought we could look forward to this baseball season to some respite from more A-Rod controversy, well, think again. Theres some disputing the legitimacy of this weeks reports, with suggestions that A-Rod fully intends to pay his bills. And since he has a net worth reported at more than 300 million, why wouldnt we give him the benefit of the doubt? Wait a minute … Alex Rodriguez? Benefit of the doubt? Oh, nevermind. Dave Hodge, TSN My thumb is up in agreement with Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma, who thinks Sidney Crosby is due to win the Hart Trophy for the second time, though I will take issue with Bylsma when he says there is "no question" that Crosby is the NHLs most valuable player. I do think theres a question – Im not sure why when the Penguins captain is running away with the scoring race and has appeared in all of Pittsburghs 70 games to lead the Pens to a certain Metropolitan Division title, but NHL watchers seem to want to consider other candidates. One problem with that - theres no answer to the question: who else should win? The next time you want Crosby to be better, name someone who is. The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

At 10:20 p.m., a spokesperson with the Baton Rouge Fire Department said the smell was dissipating, but response teams were unable to find the source. Entergy says crews searched in the area near Shelley Street and Evangeline Street, and while there was an odor in the air, it's not from gas."

Facing mounting losses, some property insurers are pulling back from selling policies in California and other western states where wildfire risk is elevated. In California alone, damages had mounted to at least $12 billion by early 2018, while the state's Carr fire likely added another $1.5 billion in insured losses."

Quote: "Two wildfires blazing in California, known as the Mendocino Complex fire, became the largest recorded in state history on Monday, crossing a grim milestone. The fire, in Colusa, Lake and Mendocino counties, has killed two people and burned almost 283,800 acres as of Monday. It has destroyed at least 143 structures, including 75 homes, according to Cal Fire officials. More than 9,000 structures remain under threat. The Mendocino complex fires, which encompass an area the size of Los Angeles, surpassed the Thomas wildfire in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, which burned 281,893 acres last year."

Quote: "We're looking at over 629,000 acres of ground and vegetation burned in California since January 1 of this year. Last year, same period of time, 223,000 acres..."

Note: So wildfires are burning at almost triple the rate of last year, and last year was itself a record-setting year. From the full hypothesis: "Probably the most noticeable effect will be fires and explosions sweeping across the planet."

Gonzaga men open West Coast Conference schedule at home, closes on road against Saint Mary’s      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Gonzaga’s West Coast Conference schedule begins with two home games and closes with the last of three Bay Area trips and a regular-season finale against rival Saint Mary’s.

The WCC announced changes to its scheduling format last March when the Zags were contemplating a potential move to the Mountain West Conference. The 16-game schedule replaces the double round-robin 18-game set-up. The conference also voted to give the top two seeds byes into the WCC Tournament semifinals.

Gonzaga opens against Santa Clara on Jan. 5, the first of two one-game weeks. The second is the return game at Santa Clara on Jan. 24. That’s followed by two split weeks (home vs. Pacific, at San Francisco; home vs. Loyola Marymount, at Portland).

The first of two dates with BYU is Jan. 31 in Provo with the return game Feb. 23 for Gonzaga’s Senior Night. The Cougars spoiled Gonzaga’s senior send-off with wins at the McCarthey Athletic Center in 2015 and 2017, the latter ending the Zags’ bid at a 30-0 regular season.

Gonzaga’s 10th WCC game will be Feb. 9 in Spokane in the first of two showdowns versus Saint Mary’s. By then, the Zags will have completed the season series with Santa Clara and San Francisco and staged its lone meeting with Portland (Jan. 19 at Portland).

The home game against the Gaels marks the last of a three-game home stand (San Diego on Feb. 2, San Francisco on Feb. 7).

The Zags play four of their final six on the road, beginning with road trips to Loyola Marymount on Feb. 14 and San Diego on Feb. 16, and capped by visits to Pacific on Feb. 28 and Saint Mary’s on March 2.

Gonzaga’s only meeting with Pepperdine takes place Feb. 21 at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

Gonzaga, projected in the top five in preseason polls, will be heavy favorites to extend its streak of WCC shared/outright titles to seven. The Zags have been solo or co-champions 17 of the last 18 seasons.

The Zags return All-WCC selections Josh Perkins, Rui Hachimura and Killian Tillie, and conference newcomer of the year Zach Norvell Jr. The roster includes sophomore wing Corey Kispert, transfers Brandon Clarke (San Jose State) and Geno Crandall (North Dakota) and incoming freshmen Filip Petrusev and Greg Foster Jr.

The WCC Tournament returns to Orleans Arena in Las Vegas from March 7-12. The semifinals are scheduled for March 11 with the championship game the following night. The double-bye format that was in place from 2003-13 ended when the WCC added Pacific in 2014.

Martin on lopettanut melkein kokonaan yleisötilaisuuksiin osallistumisen, mutta on mukana kohta alkavassa San Josen Worldconissa. Eräs fani kysyi Martinin blogissa, aikooko kirjailija lukea ääneen jotain. Vastaus:

I am not reading at Not ConJoseII. I may do readings next year in Dublin, or at other conventions, but that’s too far in advance to worry about. I do enjoy reading, but I’ve already read so many different chapters from WINDS, I want to save some for the book.

Winds julkaistu ennen ensi vuoden Worldconia?

Martin ei tee isoa promootiokiertuetta Fire and Bloodille:

I will not tour for FIRE & BLOOD… not one of those month-long twenty-city grinds, anyway. I may make a couple of appearances, maybe one on each coast. I don’t know. There’s a lot to be worked out.

Ex-Stanford swimmer Brock Turner won't get a new trial for his rape conviction      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Brock Turner, the former Stanford swimmer who infamously served three months in jail for the assault and attempted rape of an unconscious 22-year-old woman, will not get a new trial, a California appellate court panel ruled Wednesday. Turner's lawyers argued that the evidence presented at his 2016 trial did not support his convictions for sexually assaulting an intoxicated victim, sexually assaulting an unconscious victim, and attempted rape. But Judge Franklin Elia, writing for a three-judge panel of the 6th District Court of Appeal in San Jose, said there was "substantial evidence" for his conviction on all three charges.

The case gained national notoriety when the victim published the statement she read in court. The judge who sentenced Turner, Aaron Persky, was recalled in a public vote in June — the appellate judges did not discuss Persky's arguably lenient sentence. Turner, who lives with his parents in Ohio and must register as a sex offender, can still appeal his case to the California Supreme Court.

Costa Rica Adventure - Day 1      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

When I talked Shira into taking three children, two of which keep strict kosher and one of which is diabetic, to Costa Rica for a week you can imagine that I did so with Rose Colored Glasses firmly in place. Consider the full day of travel we'd need to get there. Surely the flight J. was on would land in Boston on time, as would our flight from DC. And of course, the 5+ hour flight from Boston to Panama would be easy thanks to entertainment systems on international flights. The kids would plug in and watch movies for the duration, hardly noticing the time fly by. Heck, they'd probably enjoy the flight more than many of the 'adventures' I had planned for them when we arrived.

And everything did go very smoothly. That is, until we arrived at the gate to board the 5 hour flight to Panama.

Our first hitch was that D.'s insulin pump was mysteriously near-empty. Where had the 40'ish units of insulin he was expected to use over the next two days gone? We did quite a bit of planning for D.'s diabetes, but in the first hour, we found a scenario that wasn't in our playbook. As the rest of the passengers boarded the plan, Shira was on the phone with a diabetic nurse getting instructions on how to refill the pump mid-flight. We were the last to board the plane, and as we walked on I quickly realized another assumption of mine was flawed: we were on an older plane that lacked a modern entertainment system. Yes, they'd show a movie this flight, but they'd do so on overhead screens that the kids were too short to see. As if to fully underscore how naive I had been, we sat on the tarmac for an hour waiting to leave.

When we finally got airborne the pilot got on the intercom and explained that we should expect turbulence for "the entire length of the United States." Uh, we were flying from Boston down past Florida, that would be roughly 1,300 miles of bumpy air. Fortunately, the only person bothered by the bumpy air was me; the kids couldn't have cared less. Though it did delay meal service for another couple of hours, as the flight attendants weren't able to get up and deliver food.

The kids managed through the flight without issue. Many a game of iPad chess was played, and D. got some lessons from J. as to how to use the DS. I got some high quality Scratch Jr. time in with J., showing him how to use message passing to have objects in a scene communicate. Once T. and I figured out a way to keep the cards from sliding off our tray tables, we played a number of rounds of crazy 8's. Shira refilled D's pump like a pro.

Of course we landed late in Panama, and were the last to board the 90 minute flight to San Jose. And of course when we arrived in San Jose, one of our 4 bags was missing. The airlines knew where the bag was and would deliver it to La Fortuna the next day, so that wasn't an issue. But Shira and I weren't excited about having spend another 20 minutes waiting and line to fill out paperwork when it was already after 10 pm (after midnight back in the States). Fortunately, the kids managed to hold it together playing in a cleverly crafted luggage fort.

When we finally got to the hotel, and they explained that they didn't have the adjoining rooms we'd arranged for, it almost felt appropriate. Of course the hotel would be part of this everything-must-be-inconvenient travel day.

As we tucked 3 exhausted children into bed on foreign soil, I couldn't help but see the bright side of our rough day. We'd shown that even if things didn't go as planned, we'd be OK. What better way to sharpen our skills then running the gauntlet? Still, as I drifted off to bed, I couldn't help but wish for a day that was just a tad bit less challenging.

Around MLS: Timbers on 15-game unbeaten streak with rivalry looming      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

PORTLAND, Ore. — What slow start? The Portland Timbers have recovered and then some.

A 15-match unbeaten streak has moved the Timbers into second place in the Western Conference behind FC Dallas. The streak started with a 3-2 victory at home over Minnesota on April 8.

The latest win was a 3-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union last weekend that gave the Timbers their longest MLS undefeated streak since they also went 15 games without a loss in 2013. Portland is the only team with two streaks that long. The longest unbeaten streak is 19 games, set in 2010 by Dallas.

Portland's streak is also the longest in the league this season.

"Everyone is buying into what we're preaching," goalkeeper Jeff Attinella said. "Everyone is fighting each game and we're taking each game just as seriously as the last one. We're just going to try and keep it rolling."

It has been a dramatic shift from the start of the season when the Timbers started with five games on the road — because of construction at Providence Park — and were unable to come home with a win.

And home has been key to Portland's success. The Timbers (10-3-7) have yet to drop a game at home this season. In fact, the team has not lost at home in 16 regular-season matches dating back to last season.

"We are doing well," said Diego Valeri, the league's reigning MVP who leads Portland with eight goals this season. "I am very happy about the run we're having."

Portland, which has 14 games left, is heading into a Cascadia Cup rivalry match at home this Saturday against the Whitecaps, who sit in seventh place in the West. But first Vancouver faces Toronto FC in the first leg of the Canadian Championship on Wednesday night.

The Cascadia Cup is the three-way rivalry between the Timbers, Whitecaps and Seattle Sounders that was started by rivalry groups before the teams joined MLS. Portland and Seattle sit atop the table with three points apiece, while Vancouver has none.

The Whitecaps were coming off a 2-2 draw on the road to NYCFC, stretching their undefeated streak to three games.

"We have confidence in the team, so we've just got to keep pushing forward," Whitecaps forward Erik Hurtado said.

MATCH OF THE WEEK: Sporting Kansas City (10-6-6) moved into third place in the West with a 1-0 victory last weekend on the road against Houston. The team is on the road again this weekend for its first meeting with expansion LAFC (10-6-6), which is in fourth and jostling with Sporting for playoff position. LAFC was coming off a 2-1 loss on the road to the New York Red Bulls on Sunday.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: San Jose's Vako was named the MLS Player of the Week for his two goals last Saturday against FC Dallas. The Earthquakes pulled off the 3-1 upset on the road.

Vako scored in the 19th and 88th minutes for the Quakes. He has six goals on the season.

WATCHING ATLANTA: The Timbers were continuing their upward swing, but Atlanta remains the hottest team in the league.

By far.

The Union, the first team in MLS to hit the 50-goal mark this season, sit atop the Eastern Conference at 14-4-6 with 10 games left. They are also atop the race for the Supporters' Shield.

Striker Josef Martinez leads the Golden Boot race with 26 goals in just 24 matches — and he's 11 goals in front of his closest competitor. He's just one goal away from tying the single-season record held by three players: Roy Lassiter of the Tampa Bay Mutiny in 1996, Chris Wondolowski with the San Jose Earthquakes in 2012 and Bradley Wright-Phillips with the New York Red Bulls in 2014.

Martinez already broke the league's career hat-trick record this season with his sixth.

Next up for Atlanta is a match at home against the Columbus Crew on Aug. 19.

Working toward a consensus between reformers and those often opposed to them      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Michael Petrilli recently wrote an essay titled “Where Education Reform Goes From Here,” which garnered responses from Sandy Kress and Peter Cunningham, among others. These pieces include much that’s worthy of support, emphasis, and further discussion, as well as a few areas of disagreement.

Based on their collective comments, I think there is a good chance for reconciliation and a working consensus between “reformers” and those of us who have had major problems with reform policies, implementation, and assumptions. There seems to be a common emphasis on the following approaches to improving student and school performance:

    • The centrality of curriculum and instruction
    • High-quality materials
    • Building the processes schools and districts (or CMO’s) use for school improvement, such as improving the capacity at each school for continuous growth
    • Attracting higher caliber teachers, improved induction, career ladders, and leadership, and a continued attention to improving performance for all
    • Alternate pathways for high school graduation, including career and technical education
    • Increased funding
    • Striking a balance between school and local control and district and state expectations and support
    • Avoiding the harsher anti-public-school and anti-teacher rhetoric
    • Looking to both traditional public schools and charter schools for models of high performance

These ideas also drove our efforts in California—where I live and once headed up the state education agency—to improve performance.

Mike’s, Peter’s, and Sandy’s willingness to be honest about problems with the reform movement and their sincere attempt to find common ground is to be commended. Both charters and traditional public schools need to improve, and there is a growing agreement on what that takes.

Mike writes that preparing students for democracy should be one of the purposes driving any improvement effort. There is a growing interest in civics and civic engagement in the country, and excellent exemplars now exist among charters (Democracy Prep, for example) and traditional public schools.

My only caveat is to add one more important purpose of education: the classic goal of a liberal education to help enrich each student’s life so they can reach their individual potential and develop character and a high moral stance. Mike mentions in passing literature, history, and the humanities as helping to find out how the world works, and he makes a glancing reference to character development in the service of citizenship. Yet I think this goal of broadening individual perspectives to lead a more fulfilling life should be explicitly expressed. (For a discussion of this point, see my essay titled “The Big Picture: The Three Goals of Public Education.”)

Mike also deserves kudos for promoting rigorous career and technical education as a pathway for students not bound for a four-year college. For a school, district, or state, the preparation-for-work goal should be to maximize the number of students prepared for a four-year college (or a pathway on which they transfer to one from a two-year school), and to prepare all others for a specific vocation. Presently, the country is preparing about 40 percent for four-year colleges. Even if we increase that to 50 percent (a formidable goal), that still leaves a large number of students not served. Most current policy at state and district levels basically ignores these students and assumes almost all can and should be prepared for a four-year college.

I do agree with those who are wary of an early placement test because of the danger of a premature choice, as we should give some students the chance to change perspectives in later grades. As one alternative, schools in the San Diego Unified School District have a Linked Learning college program that’s combined with a career path in which students who follow the latter early on are able to shift to the four-year-college track at a later time.

Many of Mike’s comments on literacy are also spot-on, including the importance of early foundation skills, and then content and vocabulary, as the major drivers of improving comprehension, as opposed to an over-emphasis on “comprehension skills.” One of the major deficiencies of annual statewide literacy tests is the lack of connection to content and the resulting default to comprehension strategies. Louisiana, for example, is attempting to correct this situation.

From our perspective, too many reformers are still too wedded to a strict accountability model based on a faulty theory of change. The initial reform paradigm was a simple structural leverage approach: Define student performance standards (mainly for accountability purposes, not to inform instructional improvement), assess whether the standards were being met, publicize those outcomes, provide consequences for results (bad and good), get out of the way of individual schools, and let pressure from harsh consequences and competition, especially from charters and parents, force improvement.

This strategy proved to be flawed in several respects and thus didn’t produce the hoped-for results.

First, highly simplistic is the assumption that individual schools, if given freedom from district control and spurred by competition and consequences, would figure out how to improve on their own, and it proved false for most schools. Many reformers now realize that the missing ingredient in that paradigm was direct attention to and support for the nuts and bolts of school improvement: curriculum, instructional materials, professional development, team building, principal and teacher leadership, effective district (or CMO) assistance, and help with getting these elements to cohere, as well as proper funding for those efforts. (Peter Cunningham’s response to Mike’s essay therefore deserves praise for asserting the importance of funding if improvement is to occur.) By comparison, the indirect method of attempting to improve performance by standards, primarily test-based assessments, and consequential accountability turned out to be a much weaker way to influence school performance, and it produced considerable collateral damage.

Another erroneous assumption underlying this simple reform paradigm was that educators would not improve unless compelled or pressured by fear of consequences or competition. Actually, most educators want to improve, but many did not know how, did not receive proper support, or were subject to leaders who were motivated by a test-and-punish philosophy relying on fear instead of the more engaging build-and-support approach. Appealing to teachers as professionals and engaging them in the work of improvement produces results; pressuring them often backfires. Deming and Drucker still apply.

Yet many reformers want to retain or strengthen accountability with consequences and embed the more direct approach in high-stakes accountability. The two strategies conflict because they stem from two radically different theories of how to encourage professionals to improve. More often than not, pressure and competition detract from high performance. High-stakes testing encourages schools or districts to become too fixated on test results and test items, to the detriment of deep learning and learning progressions. Campbell’s law is relevant; consequential accountability encourages educators to game the system, outright cheat, or become detached from the commitment to deeper learning and long-term continuous improvement by concentrating on short-term test results. Some reformers retort that teaching to the test and test prep are fine if complex skills are tested. But the tests don’t meet that standard. Dan Koretz’s The Testing Charade and Jim Popham’s work exemplify the problems with focusing on standardized test results, which are not of a fine enough grain size to help instruction.

As an example, tests don’t reflect the emerging idea of the importance of learning progressions, such as the development of proportional thinking in mathematics. These should be driving curriculum, instruction, classroom student assessment, and personalization. (See the recently released and excellent “Illustrative Mathematics” for a free curriculum based on learning progressions that was developed by Bill McCallum—one of the authors of Common Core Math—and his team for math in grades six through eight, and which received a top rating from EdReports.) Many reformers have advocated for more personalized, adaptive instruction. One impediment was the U.S. Department of Education’s original refusal to allow the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium to develop an adaptive test on broader strands across grades so students could adjust to higher or lower positions on these broader learning progressions. They insisted that the tests be limited to the standards of a particular grade.

Annual test results are a useful warning light and offer useful information about subgroups, but a whole array of formative evaluations, the use of instructional tasks as assessments, and teacher and student judgments are necessary to focus on what is needed to improve student performance. All too often, annual assessments drive instruction in superficial and shallow ways, instead of being one tool in the service of deeper learning. Many charters and traditional public schools, which live and die by annual test results, have become test-prep machines, narrowing the curriculum and harming student’s future performance. Also problematic is the tendency for some charter schools to trumpet bogus results by such ploys as not backfilling open slots over time and creating a rarified cohort. Competition and fear of consequences have similarly infected many traditional public schools with the same disease, including outright cheating or fiddling with who takes the test.

Finally, radical decentralization did not produce the results as advertised. The theory was based in part on the idea that districts were a main part of the problem of low performance. Districts were consumed by politics, stakeholder resistance, and/or bureaucratic inefficiencies, and were thought to be ineffective because they were top-down compliance oriented, or incapable of or not interested in improving results, but rather in protecting turf. They couldn’t or wouldn’t change. Decentralizing to individual schools, preferably charters, however, did not solve the problem of district effectiveness or individual schools and teachers needing support. Districts (or the central support structure in CMO’s) turn out to be crucial players in improving schools. Instead of end-running them, efforts should be made to improve their performance, and should be modeled after what our best districts have done. Contrary to the argument that districts were incapable of change, there is a growing number of districts in this country that have significantly improved their ability to support school improvement

Districts in California—such as Long Beach (which only has a handful of charters), Garden Grove, Elk Grove, and Sanger—as well as comparable districts across the rest of the country, were able to engender school-site improvement by reorienting their management philosophy. They made the difficult shift from compliance orientation to support and engagement, but still insisted on high expectations—which, if not met, initiated discussions on how to improve. They placed solid curricula and effective classroom instruction at the center of improvement efforts and built supportive structures and processes to facilitate instructional improvement with impressive results. That strategy should guide improvement policies. Instead of giving up on districts, we should agree on and support approaches and polices geared to help the laggards improve.

Bravo also to Mike’s suggestion that teacher quality and teaching are not the only determinants of high student performance. Curricula, good materials, support processes, money, and community efforts are all also crucial. While reformers are now stressing the importance of curriculum and instruction, they and many traditional school leaders have not thought deeply enough about the complex school processes necessary to improve classroom instruction. Mike alludes to “professional development,” but an effective improvement strategy is much more complex than that. Educators and policymakers need to concentrate on how to develop coherence among coaching, professional development, team building, use of instructional materials, a broad array of classroom formative assessment techniques, teacher and principal leadership, support for struggling students, and what districts must do to support those efforts.

It is also gratifying to see many pro-public-school reformers become sensitive to and willing to oppose privatization forces high-jacking their rhetoric to replace or drastically cut funding for public schools, or to squelch teacher unions, as has happened in many Republican-led states and at the national level. Most reformers now resist the canard that the choice is between reformers’ policies favoring students or the status quo favoring adult and union interests. Both pro-public-education reformers and the anti-reform camp want to improve the quality of our schools; the debate is over which policies or strategies will best accomplish that goal.

Many of us also agree with reformers’ proposals to concentrate more on the front end of the teacher pipeline. Welcome are suggestions to increase the quality of new teachers by strengthening teacher preparation programs, in part via higher admissions standards, and by lengthening the initial time for granting tenure, with streamlined due process protections as part of career-ladder progressions.

For existing teachers, many reformers have criticized the almost exclusive reform emphasis on firing the worst teachers by test-based and intricate principal evaluations. The effort was ruined by the use of faulty assessments and processes, and the policy itself detracted from more positive efforts to raise the performance of all staff. Moreover, concentrating on the worst often neglected supporting the best through such approaches as embedding the most effective teachers in a learning community and expanding their influence

Rewarding excellent teachers with more cash has not worked and has caused collateral damage by lowering morale and jeopardizing team building. There is a simple way out of this: Pay the best teachers more, but also have them take on additional supportive roles. Career ladders and teacher-leadership positions need to become much more prevalent, as some reformers have argued. Convincing a top teacher to stay in the profession improves student and school performance much more than firing a laggard.

That’s not to say that the worst teachers should not be fired or counseled out. There are some excellent examples of effective teacher evaluation strategies, such as those in California’s San Jose and San Juan public school districts, where teachers have helped design and implement the programs. When there is teacher buy-in and evaluation is embedded in a comprehensive school improvement effort that includes the participation of teacher leaders at the school, the rates of dismissal or resignations of the weaker teachers is actually higher. Incompetent teachers can’t hide in group efforts; those who can improve do so, and the many who can’t just resign. Conversely, having principals spend an inordinate amount of time and paperwork conducting multiple classroom visits of every teacher for the purpose of formal evaluation severely hampers their more productive role of organizing their schools. Even the best teachers are willing to accept improvement advice as part of a collaborative improvement effort; but they tend to shut down, narrow their teaching, or resist when it is part of a formal evaluation process, especially from someone whom they don’t believe is more skilled than they are.

There are many more issues which could be discussed, but I hope that this commentary helps illuminate areas of agreement, areas needing further discussion, and areas that are still in dispute.

That's the San Jose case, if you search a bit you can find the photos. Indeed the Trump attendees were driven into a gauntlet of gangsters, quite a number sporting face and neck tats, etc. Scene was bloody, scalps lacerated and noses smashed. Recently we had CNN reporters and commentators (like the Zelig of DC David Gergen) ominously warning that "the blood will be on Trump's hands" when there is violence. So typical of the mediacrats that they ignored the blood that was already there. The corporate networks were well aware of what happened at San Jose as NBC Meet the Press featured a single photo--of a woman with egg in her hair--as Andrea Mitchell opined "but Trump egged them on!"

I recently attended a green living seminar in San Jose. The keynote speaker made a very good point about the need to share green living tips with the next generation. While most of us try to do our part to save the planet and leave something for our future generations, we often forget that the […]
