Why has Deathcab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard become such an outspoken supporter for protecting the Showbox Theater? by Lester Black

Ben Gibbard has played nearly 25 shows at the Showbox theater, mostly with his band Death Cab for Cutie, but he didn’t skip a beat when I asked him what was his most memorable experience at the historic venue.

It was a run of three shows in 2004 just after Death Cab for Cutie’s Transatlanticism album was released, before that record went on to sell half a million records and launch Gibbard into international fame that has included world tours, number one hits, and two certified platinum records and five more certified gold records.

“You know, growing up in this area I couldn’t fathom playing one show at the Showbox let alone three,” Gibbard said. “And to just have this energy over the course of the three days every time we walked in there feeling like a Friday night hometown show was just pretty incredible.”

Over the course of the last two weeks, Gibbard has become an outspoken proponent for saving the Showbox from being demolished and replaced with a 44-story, $100-million apartment building. A few minutes before I talked to Gibbard he was standing at a podium in front of Seattle’s City Hall pleading for the council to save the historic venue. To Gibbard, losing the Showbox wouldn’t just be losing one of the city’s venues, it would be losing a nightclub that is internationally respected.

“What upsets me so much about the Showbox is this is one of those venues in the country and also the world that people outside of this city talk about,” Gibbard said. “San Francisco has the Filmore. Minneapolis has First Avenue. We have the Showbox. And this is one of those rooms that is not only part of our cultural history but it’s also a place that people around the country and around the world enjoy coming to and playing.”

Over 90,000 people that have voiced their support for saving the Showbox from destruction but some of the most ardent supporters of the Seattle nightclub are not the concertgoers but the musicians that have played the historic venue. National acts that have little connection to Seattle other than an occasional tour stop have expressed their support and local musicians, some of whom have only gotten the chance to play the big stage once, are proclaiming how exceptional the venue is.

Gibbard said he has personally heard from Jenny Lewis and bands like Spoon lamenting the impending loss of the venue. Gibbard said the intimacy of the large venue, both for performers and for concertgoers, is one of the reasons artists love to play there.

“It’s one of those places in the country where you walk in there either as a performer or as a concertgoer and you feel like this is going to be an event tonight, this is going to be special,” Gibbard said. “When you’re at a show at the Showbox no matter where you are standing you feel like you are very close to the performers. It’s very unique to have a venue that holds 1,200 people that feels that intimate.”

Gibbard said the first show he played at the venue was in 1996 when his former band Pinwheel opened for Modest Mouse, another local act whose journey to international acclaim has included many stops at the Showbox.

Councilmember Kshama Sawant’s attempt to expand the Pike Place Historical District to include and protect the venue sees its next vote this Wednesday at the City Council’s Finance Committee. We’ll see if the protections for the beloved nightclub get any closer to reality.

He was found unresponsive at his home in the Minneapolis suburb of Chanhassen. The suit alleges his death was a direct result of the inadequate care he received in Illinois the previous week.           The rise of the Red Power movement      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Brian Ward celebrates the anniversary of the formation of the American Indian Movement 50 years ago and the revitalization of resistance to U.S. settler-colonialism.

IN JULY 1968, the American Indian Movement (AIM) was founded in Minneapolis and became the organizational expression of the Red Power movement.

It was three months after Black uprisings shook cities across the country in the wake of Martin Luther King’s assassination, two months after the massive general strike in France, and a month before the brutal repression of anti-Vietnam war protests in Chicago outside the Democratic National Convention.

When we talk about the radicalization that happened in the 1960s and 1970s, we often forget about AIM and the Red Power movement, which were outgrowths of both centuries of resistance to settler-colonialism and the revolutionary fever of 1968.

On the 50th anniversary of founding, and in a time of renewed levels of Native resistance, it’s important to tell this story.

From Wounded Knee to “Termination”

On December 29, 1890, the 7th U.S. Cavalry killed at least 150 people — some estimate as many as 300 — at Wounded Knee, South Dakota, now located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Many historians and Natives saw Wounded Knee as the turning point after a long fight against relentless U.S. capitalist expansion westward. The massacre is often cited as marking the end of the Indian Wars and the start of a full assimilation policy that would last until the 1970s.

But while Wounded Knee was a historic atrocity, the passage of the Dawes Act of 1887 marked the start of disastrous policy of forced assimilation. It systematically reduced the land held by Natives in the West, and attempted to integrate them into American capitalism by undoing any notion of collective ownership and “giving” 160 acres to each head of household.

One of the law’s most important provisions was that the surplus land was made available for settlers, railroads, corporations and national parks.

This time saw the forerunner of Donald Trump’s border policy of separating immigrant children from their families. Many Native children were ripped from their homes and sent to Indian boarding schools, which aimed to rid the children of their language and culture and teach them a trade to make them useful cogs in the U.S. economy.

Eventually, Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s “New Deal” government was pressured to pass the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934, which ended the Dawes Act and finally gave back some level of sovereignty to Indians by officially “creating” tribal government that were elected by the tribe. Tribal constitutions, however, had to be approved by the federal government and the constitutions could not contain any form of traditional governance.

The Conditions that Gave Rise to Red Power

By the 1950s, many American Indians lived either on extremely impoverished Indian reservations or within urban centers that were often referred to as Red Ghettos.

Natives had always come to cities for work, but this migration started to dramatically increase in 1953, when Congress passed House Concurrent Resolution 108, which called for the end of reservations and federal services and protections “as rapidly as possible.”

The policy of “termination,” as it was known, was aimed at total assimilation — and allowing the U.S. government to eliminate any type of land claim or treaty rights and finally end its “Indian Problem.”

Officials chose Native nations that they considered to be the most “advanced,” eliminated their reservations and federal relationship to Washington, and handed over jurisdiction to the state. The idea of nation-to-nation relationship and treaty rights would be abolished.

The Menominee Nation in northern Wisconsin was the first tribe to be terminated. It fell under the authority of the state, as though it were simply a county without any national identity. Menominee land became easier to sell and privatize so the county could maintain a tax base.

After the policy was implemented, the Menominee were devastated. If the federal government had its way, termination was going to be imposed on every other Native nation within the United States.

As part of the termination policy, one-way bus tickets were given to Natives to leave their reservations with the promise of good jobs, resulting in a influx of Natives into cities like Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago, Seattle, Portland and San Francisco.

From 1960 to 1970, the percentage of Natives living in urban areas nearly doubled — from 28 to 44 percent. Today, 78 percent of Natives live off reservations and 72 percent live in cities or suburban areas.

This was the Indian version of the Great Migration of African Americans from the South to the North 100 years ago, except in this case, it was official government policy.

For the U.S. government, termination turned out to be a double-edged sword. It weakened Native communities, but also brought thousands of Indians together in cities, creating a pan-Indianism that hadn’t existed at least since Tecumseh’s efforts in the early 1800s to build multination resistance to Western expansion.

In cities and on reservations, American Indians faced racial profiling from the police and were one of the most disproportionately represented groups in prison. In 1968, at the time of AIM’s founding, Indians were about 10 percent of the population of Minneapolis and 70 percent of the city’s jail population.

Many of the founders of AIM first met while they were in prison. Clyde Bellecourt and Eddie Benton Banai were Ojibwe inmates in 1962 at Minnesota Stillwater Prison and started reading about the civil rights movement and the Black Panthers.

Their first taste of organizing was an education program with 47 Native prisoners. As Bellecourt recounts in Peter Matthiessen’s In the Spirit of Crazy Horse, “I guess we had the first real Indian Studies Program in the country.”

Many Indians in urban centers also started to fight for health care rights, which were guaranteed to many Natives in treaty rights. At the time, you couldn’t find an Indian Health Services outside a reservation.

The Birth of the American Indian Movement

As more and more Indians became radicalized by termination, unemployment and police violence, many took inspiration from the Black Power movement to develop their own Red Power.

In July 1968 in Minneapolis, Eddie Benton Banai, Clyde Bellecourt, George Mitchell and Dennis Banks founded what they first called the “Concerned Indian Americans.” Quickly recognizing the acronym problem, they renamed themselves the American Indian Movement.

The group’s original aim was fighting police violence in the Native neighborhood of Franklin. In their book Like a Hurricane, Paul Chaat Smith and Robert Allen Warrior describe the group’s original activities:

One of the first projects of the new group was the AIM Patrol. AIM raised money to equip cars with two-way radios, cameras and tape recorders so they could monitor arrests by the police department. When the AIM Patrol heard police dispatched to certain bars or street corners, officers would be met by Indians in red jackets carefully observing their actions. AIM also became expert at providing attorneys for those arrested. It was a tactic similar to Black Panther campaigns to monitor police in Oakland, California and other cities.

AIM’s political program was murky at first, but it evolved and developed through action and organizing into calling for self-determination and liberation.

AIM chapters started springing up everywhere in the country. The organization was growing at a rapid rate. Despite this, however, it faced the issue of disconnect from reservation people. Founded mainly by Minneapolis Ojibwe people (whose homelands are close to Lake Superior in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan), AIM was an urban pan-Indian that didn’t have roots on reservations.

That changed dramatically in February 1972 after the murder of a Lakota man named Raymond Yellow Thunder in Gordon, Nebraska.

Gordon was a small town near the Pine Ridge Reservation. As in many reservation border towns, relations between Indian and white people were extremely strained. It wasn’t uncommon to hear people use the R-word and talk about the difference between “good” Indians and “bad” Indians.

That was the atmosphere in which Raymond Yellow Thunder was beaten to death by Melvin and Leslie Hare — who were charged only with assault and battery and released without bail. Yellow Thunder’s family in Pine Ridge sought assistance from both the tribe and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), but heard nothing.

That’s when the family turned to AIM, which brought caravan after caravan to Gordon alongside the Oglala Lakota people. AIM demanded justice for the murder of Yellow Thunder. Russell Means, who was Oglala Lakota, but grew up in the Bay Area, helped bridge the gap between AIM and the Lakota people in Pine Ridge.

This unexpected response by Indians inspired people all around the country and forced Gordon authoroies to impose higher charges and convict the Hare brothers.

Gordon was a turning point for AIM, which became a trusted organization to traditionals on Pine Ridge and around the country. AIM’s success no doubt frightened the government because it had shown the ability to bring together people who had been intentionally separated: urban and reservation Natives.

After its successful campaign in Gordon, AIM was emboldened and quickly put itself on the national map, bringing the issue of Indian liberation to the mainstream.

In November 1972, the group organized the Trail of Broken Treaties, in which more than 500 American Indians drove across the country to D.C. to discuss the treatment of Indigenous people with the BIA.

AIM developed a 20-point plan, including the restoration of Indians’ treaty-making authority (ended by Congress in 1871), abolition of the BIA (reminiscent of current calls to abolish ICE), and that all Indians should be governed by treaty relations. Activists kicked the BIA out and occupied the building for a few days on the eve of the 1972 presidential election.

AIM was also part of campaigns against racism in and around Indian Country in places like Rapid City, South Dakota. It called for better housing and continued its campaign against police brutality.

The Occupation of Wounded Knee

AIM’s most memorable action was the 71-day occupation of Wounded Knee in early 1973. As I wrote in a 2013 article about the occupation for SW:

In the 1970s, the Pine Ridge reservation, where Wounded Knee is located, was run like a Latin American dictatorship.

The U.S. government would funnel money to Dick Wilson, the tribal council president, who oversaw the reservation with an iron fist. Supporters of the radical AIM were hunted down by the Guardians of the Olgala Nation (GOON) squad, ending in numerous gun battles. The GOON squad worked closely with the FBI and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Wilson was so unpopular that reservation residents formed the Oglala Sioux Civil Rights Organization (OSCRO) to impeach him. Petitions were filed — one even had more signatures than the number of votes Wilson got in the preceding election. Blatantly showing his corruption, Wilson personally presided over the impeachment hearing and insured that it failed to remove him.

In response, residents appealed for help to AIM, which brought 300 armed Oglala Lakota and AIM activists to Wounded Knee, took over the church and trading post, blocked all the roads, took several white hostages (who in fact were there willingly) and declared it a liberated territory.

The demands were simple: get rid of Dick Wilson and have the federal government investigate treaties. But the government was worried that Wounded Knee would become an example that others would follow. A high-ranking BIA official expressed alarm over his view that Wounded Knee had “crystallized a revolutionary movement in the United States.”

Instead, the government response was with overwhelming force, as hundreds of FBI agents, federal marshals, BIA police and Dick Wilson’s GOON squad surrounded Wounded Knee.

By the end of the occupation, two American Indians, Buddy Lamont and Frank Clearwater, were killed and several others were wounded.

As the FBI escalated its attack on AIM, the occupation became harder and harder to sustain. With no electricity, and running water and supplies dwindling, the occupation pushed people to their limits. The occupation ended on May 8. The FBI came in and disarmed and arrested 120 people. However, many people had snuck out the night before, evading arrest.

Repression and Decline

AFTER THE occupation of Wounded Knee, AIM’s prominence started to diminish as the group suffered from two tactics of government repression.

First, the FBI’s COINTELPRO program infiltrated AIM and started to create a culture of paranoia and suspicion. It later emerged that Douglass Durham, the group’s security director and often Dennis Banks’ personal bodyguard, was an FBI informant.

The government shamefully framed Leonard Peltier for the murder of two FBI agents in a 1975 shootout at Pine Ridge, even as the FBI admitted that it did not know who killed the agents and was more concerned about putting Peltier behind bars.

Peltier was up for parole in 2009, but Barack Obama refused to pardon or commute his sentence. He is still serving two life sentences.

The government’s second tactic against AIM was to force those arrested at Wounded Knee to go through long drawn out court cases that the government couldn’t win but that would fatigue and bankrupt the organization. Across the country, AIM members were brought up on minor charges, but would still have to go to court and fight tooth and nail, though the cases often got thrown out. It was meant to bankrupt the organization.

The repression compounded internal divisions and debates. AIM’s leadership was male-dominated, with members like Dennis Banks and Russell Means the group’s public face.

Members like Madonna Thunderhawk and Janet McCloud saw the need for Native women to start their own organization, and formed Women of All Red Nations in 1974 to fight for American Indian women health, against mass sterilization of women and against racist mascots and culture appropriation.

Among their many achievements, AIM and the Red Power movement overturned the termination policy — including restoring the Menominee reservation — and forced the government to pass legislation that promoted self-determination.

The movement’s legacy lives strong through Indian Country, where you will now see countless hats and shirts that say “Native Pride” or “Native and proud of it.”

However, AIM’s goal of liberation is far from being met. Natives are still being targeted by the police. According to the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice, Native Americans only represent 0.8 percent of the population, but are 1.9 percent of those killed by police. Indians are also disproportionately represented in prison, and treaty rights are still an important struggle.

As we see a wave of Indigenous resistance on a scale not seen since the 1970s, with the rise of Idle No More in Canada, fights against pipelines at Standing Rock and countless other locations and the #NativeLivesMatter movement, its vital for us to learn the radical history of AIM.

The best way to honor that history is to continue to resist and fight racism and discrimination while calling on the U.S. for reparations and self-determination — and to put forward a vision of socialism and Native liberation that ends the exploitation of the earth and the destruction of Indigenous land, and puts the fight against capitalism and settler-colonialism at the core of our resistance.

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book.

Previous contributors include Jesmyn Ward, Lauren Groff, Bret Easton Ellis, Celeste Ng, T.C. Boyle, Dana Spiotta, Amy Bloom, Aimee Bender, Heidi Julavits, Hari Kunzru, and many others.

Laura van den Berg's The Third Hotel is a haunting and innovative novel, easily one of my favorite books of the year.

Kirkus wrote of the book:

"Laced through with sharp insights―not just on marriage and grief, but also on the pull of travel and the dynamics of horror movies―the layers of [The Third Hotel] fit together so seamlessly they're almost Escher-esque. The line between the real and the imagined is forever blurry, and the result of all that ambiguity is both moving and unsettling. Gorgeously haunting and wholly original; a novel that rewards patience."

In her own words, here is Laura van den Berg's Book Notes music playlist for her novel The Third Hotel:

For every book, there is always a moment—or, more accurately, moments—when I wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat and think, with what feels like certainty, I will never finish this project. Experience has taught me that this kind of flattening doubt is typically a prelude to the work undergoing a major and necessary transformation, that I am about to jump off a new cliff narratively speaking and I am preemptively terrified, but nevertheless those sleepless nights can be a difficult psychic space to move through.

I love music and yet my approach to listening to music when I write is pretty scattershot. Sometimes I don’t listen to any music at all. Sometimes playlists. Sometimes one song on a loop, for a kind of sensory hypnosis. I often can’t remember what exactly I listened to when I was working on a book, let alone the timeline, because when I am really highly focused I stop hearing any sound at all.

However! I do tend to remember, with a little more sharpness, the songs that pulled me through the I will never finish this project 2AM night sweats phase, six of which I’ve listed below. Why these six, you ask? In their very different ways, each of them left me feeling energized and clear-headed and motivated, nudged me a little farther down the path forward (also, I firmly believe that listening to David Bowie will help with most problems).

1. Heroes, David Bowie

2. Doves, Future Islands

3. Room on Fire, The Strokes

4. Rolled Together, The Antlers

5. Fleur de Lys, Phoenix

6. I’ll Still Destroy You, The National

Civil War 2.0 Looms, But It Won't Be A Race War      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Authored by Kevin Barrett via Unz.com,

When we get tired of blowing up Muslims for Israel, will we turn on ourselves?

Scenarios for a second American Civil War have existed ever since the first one ended. Some hyperbolists called Reconstruction the Second Civil War. Alt-history novelists have imagined the ascension of Huey Long or George McGovern to the presidency as Civil War II trigger. The real-life (?!) ascension of Trump has inspired similar fantasies, leading red state partisans to gleefully thump their chests and imagine how easy and fun it would be to take San Francisco—a fantasy that triggers the hell out of the SF-based blue staters.

How might civil unrest spill over into civil war?

One common scenario is race war. The late Charles Manson, we are told, staged his killer-hippie mass knifings because he thought the Beatles were sending him secret orders to start a black-vs. white apocalypse. Obviously Manson must have been taking some really, REALLY bad acid while playing Beatles records backward in hopes of hearing John sneering “Paul is dead”—then suddenly grokked that the White Album, whose mysterious title does not appear on the record and makes no sense anyway, is really about white power! Manson lieutenant Tex Watkins explained: “and what it (the song ‘Helter Skelter’) meant was the Negros were going to come down and rip the cities all apart…Before Helter Skelter came along, all Charlie cared about was orgies.”

Though Manson was a raving nut, his vision of race war was inspired by contemporary reality. Indeed, while the hippies carried on with their orgies, “the Negros” did rip cities apart. Even before the Deep State murdered Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., blacks in New Jersey, Detroit, Minneapolis, and many other cities had been tearing things up and burning neighborhoods down. The “Long, Hot Summer” of 1967 featured 159 race riots in dozens of US urban centers, and elements of the National Security State were drawing up contingency plans for a race based civil war.

William Pepper - the King family’s attorney who proved in a court of law that the CIA, FBI, and US army killed Dr. King with the help of their organized crime assets - once spoke with a US Army Colonel who admitted to helping plan the assassination. The Colonel said that the military had done extensive focus group style interviews with participants in the 1967 race riots and determined that Dr. King’s charisma was the biggest factor driving the riots. Counterintuitively, the apostle of nonviolence was inspiring the psychological liberation of black people in such a way that a certain percentage felt empowered to act out their repressed anger. So when King determined to bring half a million followers to Washington, DC and stay there until the feds pulled out of Vietnam and declared a real war on poverty, the Colonel and his friends immediately envisioned the nation’s capital erupting into mass violence that could spread nationwide on a scale many orders of magnitude beyond what had happened during 1967’s Long Hot Summer, perhaps precipitating a real civil war culminating in the revolutionary overthrow of the American State. This, the Colonel explained to Pepper, was the primary reason King had to be terminated…with extreme prejudice.

Predictably, the Deep State’s murder of Dr. King did not solve the racial violence problem. The assassination itself set off a wave of new riots in cities including Chicago, Baltimore, and - sorry, Colonel - Washington, DC. White-dominated forces of the State retaliated with escalating repression. Black communities felt increasingly under siege, and have continued to feel that way until the present day. Whether it is panicky white police shooting down black people during traffic stops, on sidewalks, or in the black people’s own backyards, or whether it is black people “acting out” against whites (an interesting and under-reported case is the possibly-Cointelpro-orchestrated[*] Zebra killings discussed here by Ron Unz) the simmering racial violence in America is a seemingly unavoidable component of most projections for a New Civil War.

Most red state vs. blue state scenarios, of course, have a race war component. When Trump’s red-staters invade San Francisco, for example, it will not only be to punish the latté liberals and happy homos for their mushy-headedness and luxuriously deviant lifestyles, but more importantly to “make America white again” by ending the sanctuary city movement and deporting the illegal immigrants…while presumably also putting any black people who have managed to remain in America’s highest-rent city, as well as the déclassé ones across the Bay, in their properly subservient place. In other words, just as the first Civil War was really about race (i.e., slavery) the second one will build on the same theme.

American War

Or will it? Omar al-Akkad’s notable 2017 novel American War begs to differ.

In El-Akkad’s dystopian vision, the War on Muslims mutates into the War on Southerners—but has nothing to do with race. Instead, the Yankee Terror State turns its savagery against the New Rebels of the Free Southern States because those good ole boys and girls (of all shades of skin pigmentation and sexual preference) refuse to give up fossil fuels, choosing instead to secede from the Union.

Al-Akkad’s vision of blue vs. red global-warming-driven war run amok in a near-future America that has completely forgotten about the whole concept of race is surprisingly plausible, at least while you are reading it. (Civil War I, after all, was really about economics not race, so why shouldn’t Civil War II also be over an economic issue?) The plot turns on the adventures of Sarat, a young Red State woman of mixed and meaningless (near-black Chicano and po’ white trash) ancestry who awakens politically and goes after the Blue State occupiers in pretty much the same way the Iraqi resistance went after George W. Bush’s storm troopers.

Unlike most dystopian science fiction, American War is not just showing us a terrible future that is really an exaggerated (we hope) depiction of the present-day world we live in. Al-Akkad’s fictional 2074 America is not so much a pessimistic caricature of actual 2017 America as a wish-fulfillment dream of Americans karmically reaping what they’ve sown in their War on Muslims, euphemistically known as the “war on terror.” The horrors that Sarat and other southerners experience under Yankee occupation - drone killings, rape, massacres, torture, internment camps, orange jumpsuits - are precisely those that Muslims have been experiencing since the false flag event of September 11th, 2001. Sarat’s fictional resistance, which culminates in a fantastically horrific act of revenge against the Yankees, represents gratifying fantasy payback for the real-life Terror War’s murder of 32 million Muslims, and a prescient and timely warning about what GWOT is likely to lead to. The whole thing is premised on helping the American/Western reader empathetically imagine what the post-9/11 world looks like to Muslims in general and resistance fighters in particular: Al-Akkad fosters empathy and identification with our victims by casting the archetypal victim-turned-resistance-fighter as ordinary American rather than exotic foreigner.

Zone 23

An even better dystopian “new civil war” novel, C.J. Hopkins’ Zone 23, hasn’t yet garnered the kind of mainstream support that helped American War collect positive reviews in such outlets as The New York Times, win awards, and generally get noticed and sell plenty of copies.

Perhaps that shouldn’t surprise us, since Hopkins, a regular contributor to Unz Review, is on the red side in the real red-vs.-blue civil war that is raging all around us. (I’m talking about the red-pill vs. blue pill war, of course, not the phony culture wars thing ginned up by the Deep State.) Omar El Akkad, despite the subversive aspects of his book, is basically a blue pill kind of guy: His global warming alarmism, gratuitous decision to make his heroine a lesbian, denial of the existence of race, and general penchant for victimology (not to mention his complete avoidance of 9/11 truth in a Muslim-POV takedown of the “war on terror”) all go down well with the Establishment.

C.J. Hopkins offers a deeper, more accurate, vastly funnier, more genuinely subversive vision. His far-future America, which bears an uncanny resemblance to our nightmarish present, features drone-patrolled hyper-surveiled cities, each of which is divided by an Israeli-style Wall complete with Israeli-style checkpoints and incursions featuring Israeli-style killings of hapless untermenschen. But instead of Israelis vs. Palestinians, the divide here is between the Normals on one side of the wall and the Anti-Socials on the other.

The Normals -  good corporate citizens who are submitting to pharmaceutical and genetic correction so they can work and consume and conform and live meaningless lives like everybody else without batting an eyelash - are conditioned to fear and loathe the Antisocials, who retain enough humanity to rebel, in whatever pathetically insignificant way, against corporatist dystopia.

Zone 23, like American War, imagines the future as post-racial: Hopkins’ Normal vs. Antisocial divide isn’t about race. But it is, nonetheless, very much about behavioral genetics. In this (not so) far future, the Hadley Corporation of Menomonie, Wisconsin has developed a variant-corrected version of the MAO-A gene. Inserted into embryos via germline genetic engineering, this patented DNA produces “clears”: people who are intelligent but incurious, incapable of emotionally-driven fight-or-flight aggression (including the most common defensive variety), “easily trained, highly responsive to visual and verbal commands,” and so on. In other words, perfect corporate citizens!

The corporatist state naturally strives to perfect itself, imposing a “final solution” to the ASP (anti-social person) problem by mandating that henceforth no non-genetically-engineered babies may be born. The result is a very one-sided “race war” in which a few antisocial malcontents try to hold out against what amounts to a genocide against “uncorrected” humanity. The plot follows two of those ASP antiheroes as they throw rocks at the Israeli bulldozer of corporatist genocide.

Hopkins’ ferociously funny yarn is not just a satire on our ever-worsening techno-dystopia. In imagining a genetic basis to the difficulties many of us experience adjusting to hyperconformist “technologically-enhanced” lifestyles, and in portraying individuals struggling and flailing against the uber-civilization around them like flies caught a spider web, Zone 23 resonates with the great critiques of technological civilization. According to this tradition, which runs from Taoist Chinese hermits through Middle Eastern prophets and Marxian critics of “alienation” to contemporary scientists who insist that humans are genetically suited to be hunter-gatherers not high tech city dwellers, we are grossly unsuited for living the kind of lives that most modern humans are, for all practical purposes, forced to lead. Through the Brechtian device of estrangement, Hopkins forces us to recognize ourselves in his beleaguered ASP antiheros.

The apostles of race war, from Hitler to Charles Manson to today’s ultra-Zionists, are hugely bothered by what they see as a supposed basic and massive incompatibility between races, i.e. broad, loosely-identifiable swathes of the human genome. According to their bleak vision, we are doomed to fight and kill our cousins whose slightly different average genetic profiles mark them as Other.

Perhaps there is some truth to this notion. Perhaps our nature includes a strong tendency to in-group vs. out-group hostility. And perhaps we tend to divide in-group from out-group on the basis of ascribed ancestry, that is, along tribal lines.

But those who are hugely bothered by other races (or their own race), like those who loathe people of a different ideology or religion or language, may be getting all worked up over nothing. They may in fact be projecting their own experience of a much deeper alienation. They may simply be natural-born hunter gatherers caught in the trap of modern technological civilization, living fantastically comfortable yet somehow miserable lives, desperately seeking someone Other to blame for their predicament.

Parents Speak Out, Say FBI Arrest Saved Son On Verge Of Joining ISIS       Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Life changed as Sadiik Yusuf knew it about two years ago, when the FBI appeared at his front door in Minneapolis to tell him his son Abdullahi had been stopped at the airport, suspected of trying to board a flight that would take him to Syria to fight with ISIS. "My job has always been to drop Abdullahi off at school and to pick him up," Sidiik told a group of community leaders last week during a meeting at the U.S. Attorney's Office. "But that day, around noon there was a knock on the door. It was the FBI and I was asked if I was Abdullahi's father and the FBI agents held out a picture." That's how it all began for Sadiik Yusuf and his family: with a knock, a photograph, and the sudden realization that their son, now 20, was being lured to Syria by a shadowy group few at the time realized was targeting young Muslims in Minneapolis. "As a family it was a very difficult day, it was a shocking and horrifying day," he said through an interpreter, speaking publicly for the first time about

All eyes were on 20-year-old Abdullahi Yusuf when he stepped on the stand in federal court last week in Minneapolis to testify for the prosecution in America's largest ISIS recruitment trial. As Yusuf began to speak, his words provided a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how more than a dozen young men convinced themselves that the way to prove they were good Muslims was to travel to Syria and fight for ISIS. The radicalization process in this case was frightening simple. It began with a meal at a Somali restaurant and a pickup game of basketball. Then, he testified, smart phones came out of their pockets and the young men began watching ISIS videos on a YouTube channel called "Enter the Truth." They stayed up until 2 a.m., Yusuf said, talking about the killing in Syria and watching ISIS videos. In a Minneapolis federal courtroom, three Somali-Americans are on trial for allegedly plotting to join the Islamic State in a case that's expected to offer the most detailed public accounts yet of how the extremist group recruited nearly a dozen young men from the Twin Cities. Six Somali-Americans arrested in connection to the case have already pleaded guilty to conspiring to travel to Syria to join ISIS, making this the largest American investigation and trial related to ISIS since the terrorist group seized large parts of Syria and Iraq and declared a state nearly two years ago. Nationwide, more than 80 Americans, mostly young Muslim men, have been arrested for seeking to join the group. Most of those arrested have said they were seduced by ISIS recruiters on social media. According to the FBI, some 200 Americans have traveled to Syria and a small fraction of those people have joined ISIS. The Twin Cities area has been especially hard hit by these terrorist recruiters. This is home

"Patrick Littles 'Name The Jew' Tour Spreading Anti-Semitism Nationwide" By jewess Alyssa Fisher for the jew publication, Forward - [August 8, 2018] "Before he moves to northern Idaho in mid-August with plans of establishing a “regional capital,” neo-Nazi former Senate candidate Patrick Little has embarked on a cross-country tour he calls “Name The Jew,” where he spews anti-Semitic propaganda at passers-by, according to the Anti-Defamation League. --- Throughout his tour, which began in July, he has carried a sign that reads, “Jews Rape Kids.” Generally people ignored him, the ADL reported, but one person threw a soda can at his direction while another yelled, “F—- you.” His tour will have had stops in at least 10 cities, including Portland, Seattle, Fargo and Minneapolis. He unsuccessfully attempted to enter Canada, and now he says he plans to visit New York City, or the “the vipers’ nest,” the ADL reported. Little visited the North Dakota State Fair, Brown University in Rhode Island and the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center. He livestreamed most of his “J Walks” and encouraged viewers to fund his efforts. He’ll end the tour in Sandpoint, Idaho, where he wants to create a “regional capital.” Residents have received anti-Semitic robocalls fueling his message. “America has a Jewish problem,” Little says at the start of the call, as the theme song from “Friends” plays in the background. “To the people of Sandpoint, Bonner County, North Idaho: My name is Patrick Little, and I’ll be arriving shortly to make Sandpoint one of my new regional capitals throughout the country. This area has a reputation as a home to people with the moral courage to recognize the consequences of diversity.” https://forward.com/fast-forward/407707/patrick-littles-name-the-jew-tour-spreading-anti-semitism-nationwide/

Brian Coyle Center and Mixed Blood Theatre are excited to welcome families and people of all ages to attend an annual health fair on Friday, August 17 from 12 pm to 5:00 pm. Health screenings, cooking demonstrations, children's activities, music with Sisco Omar and other local DJ's, and much more will take place inside and on the grounds of the two neighboring organizations in and around 420 S. 15th Avenue in the Cedar-Riverside area of Minneapolis.

Fair-goers will receive free health monitoring such as blood pressure, HIV testing, blood sugar testing and more. HealthPartners, Peoples' Center, and Hennepin Health are among the sponsoring organizations of the event.

Free Henna, Face-painting, and backpacks with school supplies will be available to children attending with their families. Second Harvest will provide produce for interested participants. Drawings to win gift certificates will be held each hour of the fair. Supplies are limited so fair-goers are encouraged to come early.

Since 2008 Pillsbury United Communities at the Brian Coyle Center has been hosting the Cedar-Riverside Family Health Fair. This year Mixed Blood Theatre, located across the street from Coyle Center, will partner with the Center for this event.

According to Awol Windissa of Brian Coyle Center and the event's chief organizer, "This health fair is a good and important way for our neighborhood and others to learn of the resources available from the various healthcare and social services providers in our community. We hope it's a start for some families and reminder to others that their health is key and that they can learn how to maintain good health."

Mixed Blood, is currently involved in a health initiative in the Cedar-Riverside funded by Artplace America. The Theatre has been organizing storytelling circles to help improve communication and understanding between East African immigrants who live in the neighborhood and healthcare providers.

The Cedar-Riverside Health Fair represents a wonderful opportunity for members of the Cedar-Riverside community and the greater Twin Cities to gain access to healthcare and health-related resources for immigrant populations. This event is all-ages and free to the public.

ACTING AND MONOLOGUE TRAINING WORKSHOP STARTING THURSDAY AUGUST 16, 2018 - SEPTEMBER 6TH/ 4 CONSECUTIVE THURSDAY EVENINGS 6-9P

LIMITED CLASS SIZE ENROLL TODAY!

Become the artist you want to be and join us at MacPhail Center for Music in this challenging journey to discovering your limitless potential as an actor. John Woehrle is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and completed his MFA training @ the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. He is a member of the Pacific Resident Theater in Los Angeles and a finalist in the McKnight Fellowship for Screenwriters with his first screenplay, WEST METRO. John has appeared on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, various soap operas and in film, but his most memorable role is "Lenny" in OF MICE AND MEN. His director credits include a short independent film project, GAME DAY, theater and the award winning documentary film, PRIDE OF LIONS. Most recentlyJohn produced, wrote and acted in the critically acclaimed original play TRUST - developed in his Self Reliant Actor Workshop. Six of the nine cast members were SRP members. John taught at the prestigious, David Kagan’s School of Film Acting in Los Angeles before founding the Black Box Experiment, an ambitious student studio project that included film script development and theater showcases for public view.

In class we will hone TWO contrasting monologues to be industry ready for auditions. Start class with at least 1 monologues memorized preferably 2. I work very specifically from beat to beat for full understanding of the text to insure authenticity, depth and range to your performance. I will provide scenes for exercises used to help stretch our emotional expressiveness. IN MY OWN WORDS: In acting we get our impulses from the other actors not from the script. This involves listening, and allowing our own impulses to respond authentically. In class we explore these impulses using cold reading exercises that build the foundation of our work. Through this process your confidence will increase until you rely completely on your own instincts where ultimately your emotions, creativety, expressiveness, personality and inteligence will intersect all at the same time. You will work a minimum of 30 minutes every class! In class you always act from film, TV and play scripts. Teaching influences include the principles from Sandford Meisner's book ON ACTING while drawing on Stanislavky, Uta Hagen and Lee Strasberg and every teacher I've ever had including my mother. Cold reading and improvisation exercises are designed to overcome barriers of expression specific to each student. Great acting results from taking the risk to follow your instincts and expand your emotional range. You will learn how to respond emotionally to everything that's going in the scene. We learn through doing, not thinking. Our defense mechanisms can be deeply engrained making it a difficult challenge to let go. But it's an exciting challenge! Expect to be out of your comfort zone. Expect to grow as an actor. Authenticity, instinct, vulnerability, honesty, specificity and spontaneity are words you will hear repeatedly during your time in class. Actors (18 and older), who desire broadening and developing their art, are welcome. One on one coaching for actors and public speaking are available by appointment.

“Master teacher, John has that magic combination of kindness and challenge makes you surprise you surprise yourself by what you can do.  Whether it's your first time in a class, or you're seasoned professional, John will take you to the next level of your craft.- Cherie Anderson

"I came to John for help preparing my auditions for graduate school, and I can honestly say that I would not have done even half as well as I did at my auditions if it hadn't been for his guidance and support. John dedicates himself fully to the goals of the actors he works with; I immediately felt like he was not only a teacher but a mentor. I have improved tremendously since starting work with him. - Sara Parker

“John's class is one of a kind; he brings out the magic in all of us. The environment he provides each allows each student to push and challenge themselves to their very potential without feeling anything but support and safety. He brings both positivity and honesty, which allows the student to feel accomplished and successful but, also, make improvements and adjustments for the future. There are many great classes and coaches out there but John's is one that I HIGHLY recommend to actors and actresses of all ages and levels;“ – Max Hawksford

“When I first started working with John, I had ;minimal training. I've been taking class from John every week for nearly 3 years. I feel so much stronger, and even though I get nervous for auditions, I've learned to use my nervous energy to fuel my focus in cold reads and monologue performances. I know that I'm pursuing my big dream and gaining more & more confidence as I continue to work with John and learn to bring myself into every role. That's what John focuses on - bringing yourself along with every audition and imagining *you* in a specific set of imaginary circumstances. – Lynda Dahl Contact information

¡Atrévete a luchar, atrévete a ganar!

3. Medios de comunicación.

4. Anti-represión.

New York: Cacerolada

23 de agosto

Lansing: Marcha

Gonzaga men open West Coast Conference schedule at home, closes on road against Saint Mary’s      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Gonzaga’s West Coast Conference schedule begins with two home games and closes with the last of three Bay Area trips and a regular-season finale against rival Saint Mary’s.

The WCC announced changes to its scheduling format last March when the Zags were contemplating a potential move to the Mountain West Conference. The 16-game schedule replaces the double round-robin 18-game set-up. The conference also voted to give the top two seeds byes into the WCC Tournament semifinals.

Gonzaga opens against Santa Clara on Jan. 5, the first of two one-game weeks. The second is the return game at Santa Clara on Jan. 24. That’s followed by two split weeks (home vs. Pacific, at San Francisco; home vs. Loyola Marymount, at Portland).

The first of two dates with BYU is Jan. 31 in Provo with the return game Feb. 23 for Gonzaga’s Senior Night. The Cougars spoiled Gonzaga’s senior send-off with wins at the McCarthey Athletic Center in 2015 and 2017, the latter ending the Zags’ bid at a 30-0 regular season.

Gonzaga’s 10th WCC game will be Feb. 9 in Spokane in the first of two showdowns versus Saint Mary’s. By then, the Zags will have completed the season series with Santa Clara and San Francisco and staged its lone meeting with Portland (Jan. 19 at Portland).

The home game against the Gaels marks the last of a three-game home stand (San Diego on Feb. 2, San Francisco on Feb. 7).

The Zags play four of their final six on the road, beginning with road trips to Loyola Marymount on Feb. 14 and San Diego on Feb. 16, and capped by visits to Pacific on Feb. 28 and Saint Mary’s on March 2.

Gonzaga’s only meeting with Pepperdine takes place Feb. 21 at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

Gonzaga, projected in the top five in preseason polls, will be heavy favorites to extend its streak of WCC shared/outright titles to seven. The Zags have been solo or co-champions 17 of the last 18 seasons.

The Zags return All-WCC selections Josh Perkins, Rui Hachimura and Killian Tillie, and conference newcomer of the year Zach Norvell Jr. The roster includes sophomore wing Corey Kispert, transfers Brandon Clarke (San Jose State) and Geno Crandall (North Dakota) and incoming freshmen Filip Petrusev and Greg Foster Jr.

The WCC Tournament returns to Orleans Arena in Las Vegas from March 7-12. The semifinals are scheduled for March 11 with the championship game the following night. The double-bye format that was in place from 2003-13 ended when the WCC added Pacific in 2014.

Norway Is Opening for Business in Carbon Capture      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

The Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy has announced that it will be moving forward with an undersea project for carbon capture and storage (CSS), the first in the world to be able to store carbon dioxide (CO2) waste from multiple industrial sources. If the project is successful, it will serve as a stepping stone for full scale international operations.

The impetus behind this is to get ahead of the carbon capture curve and create an economically viable value chain solution for CCS. When this infrastructure is put into place, Norway will be able to import CO2 for permanent storage, providing a ready mechanism for countries and companies to set up their own CCS operations. It will also lower the threshold for a European hydrogen market. Norway could be getting into the business of importing and sequestering CO2 as a service.

This schematic shows terrestrial and geological sequestration of carbon dioxide emissions from a coal-fired plant.
(Image source: LeJean Hardin and Jamie Paynederivative work: Jarl Arntzen [CC BY-SA 3.0  (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)], via Wikimedia Commons)

The country is already the world leader in carbon storage, going back to the Sleipner Project, which has stored one million tons of CO2 per year since it began about 20 years ago. It was the first facility dedicated to CO2 storage and was installed as a means of avoiding the Norwegian carbon tax and reducing the CO2 content of natural gas produced in the area, which exceeded the specified European Union limit in CO2 concentration of 2.5%.

The CO2 was removed using an amine-based sorbent, with the excess being pumped under the seabed to a depth of roughly 1 km. Of the 17 large-scale CCS facilities operating worldwide today, only four are dedicated to carbon storage. Two are in Norway (Sleipner and Snøhvit), one in Canada (Quest), and one in the US (Decatur). The rest are being used for enhanced oil recovery.

The importance of CCS technology is hard to overstate, at least for as long as fossil fuels are part of the energy and industrial landscape. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has called CCS a key technology for reducing coal and gas emissions across industries. In a statement to Business Insider, an IEA spokesperson said, “There is no other technology solution [today] that can significantly reduce emissions from the coal and gas power generation capacity that will remain a feature of the electricity mix for the foreseeable future. No other technology solution is capable of delivering the deep emissions reductions needed across key industrial processes, such as steel, cement, and chemicals manufacturing, all of which will remain vital building blocks of modern society.”

This latest demonstration scale project, which is expected to be online by 2020, is unique in that it will capture emission from two different industry types: a cement factory in Brevik, owned by Heidelberg Cement, and an energy recovery (waste incineration) plant in Oslo. These sites all delivered their concept studies for CO2 capture in the fall of 2017. Each plant plans to capture roughly 400,000 tons annually.

In operation, CO2 will be transported by ship from each capture plant to an onshore facility on the Norwegian West Coast for temporary storage. It will then be transported via a pipeline to a subsea formation in the North Sea for long-term storage. The Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy has identified several injection wells east of the Troll field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The CO2 will be stored permanently up to 2,000 meters below the seabed.

According to Equinor, an oil and gas company that is a partner in the project and was involved in the earlier Norwegian CCS projects, “The reservoir surveyed for CO2 storage has the capacity to accommodate significant additional volumes.”

The company will be responsible for the planning of the storage facility and is also looking into the feasibility of pairing this carbon capture capability with hydrogen production. When hydrogen is produced from natural gas, it emits CO2 as a byproduct. But if the CO2 could be safely sequestered, it could provide a carbon-free alternative. Equinor, along with partners Vattenfall and Gasunie, is currently assessing the possibility of converting a natural gas power plant to run on hydrogen and sequestering the resulting CO2 emissions beneath the seabed.

Apple Details Improvements to Siri's Ability to Recognize Names of Local Businesses and Destinations      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
In a new entry in its Machine Learning Journal, Apple has detailed how it approached the challenge of improving Siri's ability to recognize names of local points of interest, such as small businesses and restaurants.

In short, Apple says it has built customized language models that incorporate knowledge of the user's geolocation, known as Geo-LMs, improving the accuracy of Siri's automatic speech recognition system. These models enable Siri to better estimate the user's intended sequence of words.

Apple says it built one Geo-LM for each of the 169 Combined Statistical Areas in the United States, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, which encompass 80 percent of the country's population. Apple also built a single global Geo-LM to cover all areas not defined by CSAs around the world.

When a user queries Siri, the system is customized with a Geo-LM based on the user's current location. If the user is outside of a CSA, or if Siri doesn't have access to Location Services, the system defaults to the global Geo-LM.

Apple's journal entry is highly technical, and quite exhaustive, but hopefully this means that Siri should be able to better understand the names of local points of interest, and also be able to better distinguish between a Tom's Restaurant in Iowa and Kansas based on a user's geolocation.

In its testing, Apple found that the customized language models reduced Siri's error rate by between 41.9 and 48.4 percent in eight major U.S. metropolitan regions: Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, Seattle, and San Francisco, excluding mega-chains like Walmart.

Siri still trails Google Assistant in overall accuracy, according to a recent study by research firm Loup Ventures, but hopefully these improvements eliminate some of the frustration of querying Siri about obscurely named places.

Dixie Brands vs Vireo Health: Which Marijuana Stock IPO Holds More Upside?      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Two Cannabis Companies Going Public
Marijuana companies are going public at a dizzying rate this year—blink and you might miss an initial public offering (IPO). No need to worry though, because we have a fresh report on two upcoming marijuana stock IPOs: Dixie Brands and Vireo Health Inc.

The former is headquartered in Denver and makes weed-infused beverages like lemonades and root beers. Meanwhile, the latter is a Minneapolis-based company with operations in three different states.

Both will (probably) go public as micro-cap stocks.

What’s great about these equities is that they would enter the market early in their life cycle, giving investors a shot at.

Aug. 11 the deadline for online Legacy Run registration      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Those wishing to participate in this year’s American Legion Legacy Run have until Saturday, Aug. 11, to register online. To do so, click here.

All riders and passengers who register online before Aug. 1 will be mailed the registration packet with patches and map book materials before national staff departs. Those who register on or after Aug. 1 will be mailed their registration packets on or after Sept. 1 (while supplies last) as staff returns from convention duties.

So far, 515 participants have registered for the Legacy Run, which will leave Hutchinson, Kan. – where Post 68 will host kickoff events – on Aug. 19 and arrive in Minneapolis for the 2018 National Convention. The ride will make stops in Missouri, Iowa and Wisconsin before finishing Aug. 23 at Anoka Post 102 in Minnesota.

At various stops along the way Legion Riders will take part in wreath-laying ceremonies at various memorials and cemeteries, as well as make lunch and dinner stops at Legion posts whose charters all date between 1919-1921. Legion Riders also will have the opportunity to meet with American Legion Legacy Scholarship recipients at the final two stops of the ride.

The Legacy Run raises money for the Legacy Fund, which provides college assistance for the children of U.S. military personnel killed on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001, as well as children of post-9/11 veterans with a combined VA disability rating of 50 percent or higher.

The 2017 Legacy Run raised a record $1,224,653 – the fourth straight year the ride raised more than $1 million.

Historic Rendition of My Back Pages and a Bit of Backstory on the Song      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
The song "My Back Pages" originally appeared on the early acoustic album Another Side of Bob Dylan. It's interesting that Dylan never played the song in concert until the summer of 1978. Could it be that he now had enough back pages to put authenticity into the performance? He continued to include the song in his playlists on and off till the summer of 2012, performing it 260 times over that period of time.

One of those performances was the 30th Anniversary Concert, 16 October 1992, celebrating a milestone in Dylan's recording career. (Who will be in the 60th anniversary event in 2022?) The concert featured various artists performing over 30 great Dylan songs from his expansive catalog, mostly from the Sicties, though Willy Nelson pulled "What Was It You Wanted" from Oh Mercy, and the O Jays covered "Emotionally Yours" from Empire Burlesque. (You can see the playlist and details about everyone who performed here on Wikipedia.) It was an amazing line-up, and near the end of the night Dylan played two selections --"It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" and the one featured here, "My Back Pages."

Certain details seem to stick with you no matter how long you live, and one that stuck with me (regarding this song) was how Dylan recorded the entire album in one evening. The studio session took place on June 9, 1964. Fourteen songs were recorded, eleven of which appeared on the album Another Side of Bob Dylan. (Contrast this with the weeks and months The Beatles spent on their later albums once relieved from deadlines imposed by touring and the record company.)

There were a number of people in the studio that night including the journalist Nat Hentoff who was working on a piece for The New Yorker. It's a great read as we see first hand how quickly the young Dylan had matured as an artist. Please make time to follow the link at the end of this blog post. Hentoff sets up his piece like this:

From mural in Minneapolis.
A few weeks ago, Dylan invited me to a recording session that was to begin at seven in the evening in a Columbia studio on Seventh Avenue near Fifty-second Street. Before he arrived, a tall, lean, relaxed man in his early thirties came in and introduced himself to me as Tom Wilson, Dylan’s recording producer. He was joined by two engineers, and we all went into the control room. Wilson took up a post at a long, broad table, between the engineers, from which he looked out into a spacious studio with a tall thicket of microphones to the left and, directly in front, an enclave containing a music stand, two microphones, and an upright piano, and set off by a large screen, which would partly shield Dylan as he sang, for the purpose of improving the quality of the sound. “I have no idea what he’s going to record tonight,” Wilson told me. “It’s all to be stuff he’s written in the last couple of months.”

Mural in Haight-Ashbury
Wilson goes on to confide, “I’m somewhat concerned about tonight. We’re going to do a whole album in one session."

Having read a lot of Hentoff's essays and stories over the years, including his autobiography, this article was a special pleasure to read.

Dylan came into the control room, smiling. Although he is fiercely accusatory toward society at large while he is performing, his most marked offstage characteristic is gentleness. He speaks swiftly but softly, and appears persistently anxious to make himself clear. “We’re going to make a good one tonight,” he said to Wilson. “I promise.”

And it was a good one. The album was a summing up of his acoustic stage and a preview, lyrics-wise, of what was to come.

The six legendary performers who sang "My Back Pages" were Roger McGuinn, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Dylan and George Harrison. In moments like this I can't help but have this thought: When each of these performers was a teen, do you think they imagined being on a stage someday in Madison Square Garden with some of the most famous performers of their generation? For each, though, it all started with a love of making music. Each one is a reflection of the saying, "Follow Your Bliss."

Here are the lyrics, with the performers of each verse inserted.

My Back Pages

Roger McGuinn
Crimson flames tied through my ears
Rollin’ high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads
Using ideas as my maps
“We’ll meet on edges, soon,” said I
Proud ’neath heated brow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Tom Petty
Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
“Rip down all hate,” I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull. I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers
Foundationed deep, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Neil Young
Girls’ faces formed the forward path
From phony jealousy
To memorizing politics
Of ancient history
Flung down by corpse evangelists
Unthought of, though, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Eric Clapton
A self-ordained professor’s tongue
Too serious to fool
Spouted out that liberty
Is just equality in school
“Equality,” I spoke the word
As if a wedding vow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Bob Dylan
In a soldier’s stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I’d become my enemy
In the instant that I preach
My pathway led by confusion boats
Mutiny from stern to bow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

George Harrison
Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats
Too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking
I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms
Quite clear, no doubt, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Here's the performance on YouTube.

What's interesting to me is how Dylan, in the Hentoff interview, appears to have no clue how far his fame would carry him. He claimed to be only concerned with the now, and not focused on where the future would take him. “Now there’s this fame business. I know it’s going to go away. It has to. This so-called mass fame comes from people who get caught up in a thing for a while and buy the records. Then they stop. And when they stop, I won’t be famous anymore.”

Now that he's garnered a Nobel Prize, he's compared with Shakespeare along with the suggestion that in 100 years we will still be studying his songs.

The latter part of the interview includes some hilarious myth-making on Dylan's part, but that's another story for another time.... READ IT HERE: Bob Dylan, The Wanderer by Nat Hentoff.

Review by Your Imaginary Friend

From Minneapolis: Drop dead gorgeous chill synth based songs with female vocals that are more aptly described as dreamscapes. Bands like Young Marble Giants, Low, come to mind in it’s pure simplicity, theres something quiet Lilliput in here too. But it sounds like neither of them. Contemporary band Wume is very very close. Pure loveliness all synths with chill drums, very tasteful distant guitar or maybe a bass. A rare (these days) real band with 5 members creating this beauty (as opposed to one or two folks sampling and sequencing). Dang. I’m flushing all my narcs down the toilet, don’t need them when I have this.

1)* (7:23) lovely chill Tom Tom beat with dreaminess defined. 2) (5:24) chillness, pulsing synth and echoes. 3) (7:11) excellent with simple tribal drums. 4) (8:12) no drums really but a searing distant electric guitar takes center 5) (8:13) Tom drums, spoken word distant voice 6) (7:36) bass guitar leads this, so cool maybe this is the YMG ref I was looking for.

One argument from anti-Minneapolis 2040 Plan that I find strange is the argument that multi-family housing doesn’t improve affordability. Car pooling hit its peak at the garages in 2012, when the Minneapolis garages were built to help reduce congestion from I-394, I-94, and the northern suburbs. But it's dropped about 30 percent since then, while parking contracts for individual vehicles have soared downtown. It's a classic case of people saying one thing and doing another.

Minnesota is the 'Land of 10,000 Lakes". Actually there are 15,000!

Minnesota is the 12th largest in area and the 22nd most populous of the U.S. states; nearly 60 percent of its residents live in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area (known as the "Twin Cities"), the center of transportation, business, industry, education, and government and home to an internationally known arts community. The remainder of the state consists of western prairies now given over to intensive agriculture; deciduous forests in the southeast, now partially cleared, farmed and settled; and the less populated North Woods, used for mining, forestry, and recreation.

This sign is made out of wood and has been painted black and hand distressed. The jute burlap has been painted in black. You can pick from any of the wood colors displayed in the second photo. If you would like the star instead of a heart, please inquire.

The state signs measure 12" x 12".

A "D" hook is attached to the back and two small rubber wall bumpers have been added to protect your wall.

Before Mitski releases her latest album, Be The Cowboy, next week, she drops her new song "Two Slow Dancers," the album's outro. The song is a projection of two old lovers reunited and reflecting in the adolescent setting of a school gymnasium. "They used to have something together that is no longer there and they’re trying to relive it in a dance, knowing that they’ll have to go home and go back to their lives,” Mitski explains. Be The Cowboy is the follow-up to 2016’s Puberty 2.           Chipotle testing bacon, nachos, and late-night tacos      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. said Thursday that it is testing Applewood Smoked Bacon in eight restaurants in Orange County, Calif. in September after "tremendous" response in the New York City Next Kitchen. The fast-casual chain is also expanding its 10-restaurant test of build-your-own nachos to full-market tests in Denver and Minneapolis-St. Paul. And finally, until September 30, Chipotle is offering $2 tacos with the purchase of a drink after 8pm at participating restaurants in Miami and Dallas. The tests are part of Chipotle's effort to be "more culturally relevant," said Chris Brandt, the company's chief marketing officer. There was recently complaints about food-related illnesses in Ohio, and DiCello Levitt & Casey and food safety law firm Ron Simon & Associates filed a lawsuit in Ohio concerning food contamination. Chipotle shares are up 69.2% for the year to date while the S&P 500 index is up 7% for the period.
