Oxford Study Finds Conservatives Are ‘Right To Be Skeptical’ of Scientists

An initial note:  The leading author in the paper mentioned below is Nathan Cofnas, not Confas.  It is of course an unusual name so confusion is understood. It is a Lithuanian Jewish name.

I have read the original academic journal article and rather admire the way Nathan has minimized his upsetting of applecarts.  Most social psychological research is utter bilge but Nathan quotes a lot of it with a straight face. He establishes his point about biased scientists even while not criticizing a lot of biased science.

So his paper is a very scholarly and thorough discussion of three areas where the positions of the scientific establishment are unreasonably liberal. And he doesn't even mention global warming!  Conservatives have long been acutely aware of the liberal bias in academe but Cofnas gives detailed chapter and verse coverage of how that affects scientific findings.

I myself worked for ten years in a sociology department of a highly rated Australian university and rapidly became aware that all of the other teaching staff were Marxists of one stripe or another -- so it was clear from that that conservative ideas would not get fair consideration, if they were considered at all.

Cofnas mentions the difficulty that conservatives have in getting results of their research published in the academic journals.  I experienced that and had to go to great lengths to overcome it.  I overcame it by doing much higher quality work than Leftist authors were presenting  -- which was not actually that hard.

By that I am referring to the virtually universal practice among psychologists of carrying out their research using either white rats or available groups of freshman students.  Such studies are no more than childish games.  To arrive at any sort of generalizable conclusion, you have to base your research on  a representative sample of the population you wish to discuss. Normal psychological research, however, does nor use representative samples of anything.  They do not even attempt to use representative samples of freshman students!  Yet such totally useless research results are routinely presented as if they were generalizable to all humanity!  That is just about as far away from real science as you can get.  It's about as authoritative as medieval theology.

So I used that to my advantage.  I did my research using real random samples of specifiable populations. I went out and doorknocked, for instance -- something that would give almost any leftist academic the horrors. So when my papers came up for evaluation, editors and referees would have looked absurd  even to themselves if they rejected the only bit of generalizable research that they had ever seen.  Even then, however, if I questioned liberal dogma too sharply or sweepingly, my papers were rejected.  Like Cofnas I had to stick to a careful consideration of just a few detailed points.

So conservatives do well to be skeptical of conclusions from liberal social scientists. Their conclusions are not only biased, they are in general just rubbish by normal scientific standards, and blatant rubbish at that.

Wisely, Cofnas did not extend his critique to global warming. But that allegedly "scientific" theory was obviously wrong from its first formulation in the 80s.  The theory is that the worldwide expansion of industrialization after WWII led to a great increase in atmospheric CO2 and that that rise in turn caused a rise in the global temperature.

And they were half right.  CO2 levels did shoot up steadily in that timeframe.  But here is the catch:  Temperature levels did not.  They plateaued. Over a 30 year period from 1945 to 1975 there was no rise in the global temperature.  Temperatures just bobbed up and down around a static average.  Temperatures at the end of the period were essentially the same as at the beginning.  It would be hard to think of a clearer disproof of the temperature effects of CO2.  When Warmists are confronted by that fact they mumble something about "special factors".  Special factors that exactly  cancelled out rising CO2 effects for 30 years?

Conservatives have long been skeptical of certain scientific claims, especially in regard to the science behind man-made global warming.

However, a study by the University of Oxford suggests that there may be a reason for that. In fact, they go as far as to say that conservatives have a “right” to be skeptical of scientists.

The study “Does activism in the Social Sciences Explain Conservatives’ Distrust of Scientists?” was led by Professor of Biology for the University of Oxford Nathan Confas and was first published online back in 2017. However, the study was brought to light again when it was republished this month in the recent issue of the American Sociologist.

While conservatives’ distrust in scientists has increasingly decreased every year since 1974, there has been little understanding as to why.

The research hits the well-repeated claim that conservatives often dismiss scientific claims because they contradict their religious beliefs. There are some who believe that conservatives throw out these scientific claims because, as Confas and his team note, it “threatens their worldview.”

However, Confas told Campus Reform that this was a “misguided approach.” Additionally, he said that “liberals and conservatives are equally likely to discredit science if it conflicts with their world-view.”

Confas proposed that the reason so many conservatives are skeptical is that there is an increase of liberalism within the scientific community.

He cited a recent study to prove his point. The study surveyed 479 sociology professors, and only 4 percent identified as conservative or libertarian. Compare this with the 86 percent who identify themselves as liberal or left-radical.

Additionally, Confas suggests that goal of sociology “involves reorganizing society to fight inequality, oppression, poverty, hierarchy, and the like. Its ideological orientation arose out of … civil rights, feminism, Marxism, and other progressive movements.”

But it’s not just the area of sociology where this bias is creeping in. UNT professor George Yancy published a piece titled, “Yes Academic Bias is a Problem and We Need to Address It.”

“Given the reality that academics are much more politically progressive and irreligious than the general population, one should be concerned about the potential of liberal and secular bias,” he wrote. “Those like myself are also concerned about academic bias simply because such bias can lead to bad science.”

It’s this “bias” that leads to “bad science” that is concerning to Confas. He told Campus Reform, “Taking the easy route isn’t something that I or my coauthors are tempted to do. We want to do our part to help correct the science.”

He added, “Conservatives are right to be skeptical. Take any politicized issue that is connected to some disagreement about scientific fact. I do not believe there is a single case in the last couple decades where a major scientific organization took a position that went against the platform of the Democratic Party.”

Flashback: Trump Stops Motorcade After Seeing Firefighters in Full Turnouts

President Donald Trump has made respect for the men and women who serve our communities a top priority for his administration. Whether it’s police or firefighters, he’s been conspicuously generous with his praise.

That translates into plenty of speeches and tweets, but also real-world displays like this one from Bethpage, New York.

According to BizPac Review, the incident took place in May as the president was leaving a forum on illegal immigration. (Long Island has seen a wave of violence from the MS-13 gang. The president spent part of the meeting paying tribute to families who had lost loved ones to the violence.)

That’s not what got everyone talking, however. What has created a buzz was a bunch of firemen standing to salute the president in their full turnouts — fire helmets, jackets, boots, the whole nine yards.

And, as it turned out, the president was more than willing to salute them by stopping his motorcade. The video shows several vehicles go by as the firemen are saluting. Then, as the presidential limo came by, it stopped.

A few individuals emerged from the limo, after which the very familiar figure of President Trump could be seen getting out.

Cheers greeted the president as he walked over to the group. He eventually signalled the men to come over and the two sides greeted each other warmly.

“Thank you, thank you,” Trump said as he shook the hands of the firemen.

“That’s awesome!” one of the firefighters could be heard saying. And, indeed, you can’t say they didn’t get the experience of a lifetime.

YouTube users seemed to agree. “Best president ever!” one wrote.  “President Trump…..a man for the people. He loves America and he loves her people,” another wrote.

Keep in mind that full firefighter turnout gear isn’t exactly a) light or b) cool. May isn’t the coolest month in New York, either. For these guys to be out in the street with their full gear on says a lot about how they feel about the president.

Then again, the president has said a lot about how he feels about them. Just this past weekend, Trump told an Ohio rally audience that his administration is “standing up for the heroes who protect our country.”

If these firemen are any indication, that relationship is definitely reciprocal.

Elizabeth Warren under fire after ripping U.S. criminal-justice system at Netroots Nation

She's just solid evil

Republican Senate hopeful Beth Lindstrom called Monday on Sen. Elizabeth Warren to apologize for denouncing the U.S. criminal-justice system as “racist … front to back.”

“Sen. Warren needs to apologize to every police officer, judge, corrections department employee, probation worker and the many other honest and decent people in our criminal justice system who have been smeared by her alienating and careless rhetoric,” Ms. Lindstrom said in a statement.

She referred to Ms. Warren’s comments Friday at Netroots Nation, an annual left-wing gathering, where the Democratic senator appeared as part of a session at Dillard University in New Orleans.

“Let’s just start with the hard truth about our criminal justice system,” Ms. Warren said. “It’s racist. It is. And when I say our system, I mean all the way. I mean front to back. We’re talking about the front end on what you declare to be illegal; on how you enforce it, on who gets arrested.”

Those taking umbrage at the Democratic senator’s blast included the right-leaning Boston Herald editorial board, which asked, “Is there any hard-working American who Elizabeth Warren has not condemned?”

“The United States is a terrible place. At least that appeared to be the theme of Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s ominous chat at a historically black college on Friday,” said the Herald op-ed headlined, “Liz Warren keeps playing blame game.”

Ms. Lindstrom, one of three Republicans seeking the party’s nomination in the Sept. 4 primary, accused Ms. Warren of smearing those who work in the justice system to boost her chances for a possible presidential run in 2020.

“Words like this are polarizing and divisive: completely used for personal political gain for 2020, without regard for how they sound to the many good people in Massachusetts and around the country who are punishing criminals, keeping us safe and administering justice,” Ms. Lindstrom said.

Others pointed out that until recently, the Justice Department was headed by Attorney General Loretta Lynch, who succeeded Eric Holder during the Obama administration. Both are black.

A compromise that might be needed for immigration reform

Rejection of House Republicans’ “compromise” immigration bill on June 27 by a lopsided 121-301 margin may be exactly what is needed to end the decades long immigration reform gridlock, if more-moderate House conservatives learn the right lesson from the bill’s failure.

The compromise bill was intended to attract support from these more moderate Republicans after a more restrictionist bill proposed by Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), was defeated 193-231 the previous week. Neither of the bills received a single Democratic vote.

In truth the votes, rather than serious attempts to fix immigration policy, were just political theater in advance of this Fall’s midterm elections. Everyone involved knew that neither bill would attract the necessary Democratic support needed to pass the Senate.

Because Goodlatte’s bill, which would have created legal protection for fewer immigrants who were brought to the United States as children and more severely restricted future legal immigration, received greater support, there is danger that Republicans will believe that more restrictive immigration bills may have more of a chance of passing in the future.

Although President Trump ultimately supported the compromise bill, he had previously tweeted that “Republicans should stop wasting their time on Immigration until after we elect more Senators and Congressmen/women in November” and that “We can pass great legislation after the Red Wave!”

That’s exactly the wrong lesson. Republicans are so deeply divided on this issue that even if they gain seats in both houses of Congress, immigration reform would still require bipartisan support to become law. To get bipartisan support they’ll have to forgo the votes of those members of Congress who want to decrease legal immigration. Both recent proposals alienated Democrats with changes that would have decreased future legal immigration through existing family reunification visas.

Though you might not know it from the angry rhetoric, U.S. public opinion has been becoming more favorable, not less, on immigration in recent years. According the Gallup Poll that asks “Should Immigration Be Kept at Its Present Level, Increased, or Decreased?” 39 percent of respondents said immigration should be kept at current levels. While 29 percent said immigration levels should decrease, that number was down from 38 percent two years ago. Similarly, the 28 percent that said immigration should increase was up from 21 percent two years ago. Opinions have trended in these directions for decades and two years of President Trump’s rhetoric hasn’t changed this. As the opinions of voters continue their trend in this direction, politicians will ultimately follow.

Any immigration reform bill that stands a chance of becoming law, with the current Congress or in the foreseeable future, will need to be less restrictive than the ones the Republicans just proposed. That’s a good thing, not just for immigrants, but for native born Americans as well.

Economists who study immigration do not find the negative consequences that many people imagine. Immigration raises the income, on average, of the native born. Immigrants create about as many jobs as they take and they don’t depress wages of the vast majority of Americans.

Passable immigration reform today would likely trade funding for a border wall for a legal pathway to citizenship for immigrants brought to the United States illegally when they were children. Law and order Republicans could claim that they were securing the border and they could defend themselves against charges of “amnesty.” Since this reform only applies to people brought here as children, they could point out that when children break most other laws in the United States they are held to a lesser standard than adults and that this is no different.

Democrats would be wise to sign on to such deal too. Net migration from Mexico has been negative since the Great Recession. So, while symbolic, the wall would do little to change immigration numbers.

Such a reform would still leave 11 to 12 million immigrants, most of whom contribute to our overall prosperity, in the United States illegally. But no politically viable proposal is possible for them at the moment. Hopefully, if voters’ opinions continue to move in the direction they have been moving, even this may be possible in the future.

The Michigan All-Numbers Team: Defense      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
The Michigan All-Numbers Team: Defense Seth August 7th, 2018 at 1:22 PM

This week: We continue picking the best number for each position with the defensive side. Offense is here.

Rules: It's what you wore when you contributed there. Starts, stats, big plays, etc.

All photos from priceless resource UM Bentley Library unless stated otherwise. All-Americans highlighted.

A Short History of Defensive Positions

My goal so this wouldn't just be some useless offseason #content was to include all players since they started having numbers in the '20s. That way it's not just "here's the guys we remember from the last 10 years."

That makes defense WAY harder to do this (correctly) than for offense. Great two-way players are best known for their offensive feats and were typically listed with their offensive positions, for example Benny Friedman played quarterback on offense but halfback (cornerback) on defense. Defensive positions have changed dramatically over the years, and what you call a thing often takes another generation to change after the job has changed (for a taste, watch this 1940s defensive tutorial).

From the '30s to the '60s centers, fullbacks and one of the guards played linebacker. One safety played in the parking lot to deter quick punts because offenses would take a 50-yard field position swing over possession any day.

Transition periods are good for new position names and player nicknames—we're going through one now with Viper—but tough on roster data. Exempli gratia: the starter data list Dominic Tedesco and John Anderson as defensive ends in 1976. In 1977 they were both starters again but now at "outside linebacker."

No, Michigan didn't "switch" that year from a 5-2 defense to a 3-4. They just fixed the glitch. This gets especially troublesome when you consider how often shifts put 3-4 "tackles" on the edge. I mean, they called Mark Messner a tackle his whole career, even though he spent that career aligned up like so:

#60 at the bottom

Since the jobs haven't changed nearly as much as the names, I'm going to do defense by job description.

[After THE JUMP: The numbers.]

Nose Tackle (Down Guard, Middle Guard, Nose Guard) #96

Will Carr, Ryan Glasgow, Bob Kolesar as an underclassman

[Right: Upchurch]

My new rules made this hard: a lot of HM options and no clear winner. The top three were especially close: Martin and Glasgow were very similar players, and Carr was better than Bo's early '70s starter Greg Ellis, but #68 has (the better years of) a Seven-Oaks post, and 96 includes a guy from when I was at school that we try not to talk about. And I wanted to go with 54 because one should take every opportunity to mention Donnie Warner, since Michigan had a non-scumbag, non-loser, non-bench player who was the same size as Rudy with a tougher life story starting on a better defense because Warner was friggin' Sherlock Holmes at knowing offensive linemen tells.

Ultimately I nodded toward the more recent two because we can still talk about the 1940s star who wore this number as a sophomore. Bob "The Maulin' Medical Man" Kolesar was the backside guard (with Julius Franks the frontside) and played on or off the line depending of if Michigan was in its 6-2 or 5-3 alignment. However he only did that for a few games in 1940 before switching to #68. He would later try to stay in med school while enlisted in the U.S. Army and technically on the Detroit Lions. He also kicked off a legacy: Bob's distant cousin Bill played tackle for Michigan in the '50s, Bill's son John Kolesar, a receiver, played with Harbaugh. John's son Caden is a 2019 DB/ATH at St. Ed's with mostly MAC offers who might end up at Northwestern.

Nex let's talk about Will Carr, an All-American in 1996 who can only be googled by including the words "Jason Horn." Carr can take credit for some of that, as Horn wracked up 11 sacks and 18 TFLs in '95 with Carr sucking up doubles. He also lined up at fullback some, though he tended to fumble when he had the ball. Fortunately he lost control after he broke the plane on this one.

And Ryan Glasgow was the best of the Glasgows. Remember when about this time one year there were practice reports that Glasgow was ahead of Ondre Pipkins? Larry Harrison was a planetoid starter until he was kicked off the team for creepiness.

#68: Mike Martin (2009-'11), Greg Ellis (1971-'72), and Robert Kolesar (1941-'42). FYI 1947-'48 star OG Stu Wilkins played linebacker on defense when Crisler wasn't inventing the platoon system to get him off the field)
#54: Steve Graves (1976-'77), Donnie Warner (1973), Ernest Pederson Jr. (1936)

All backups no starters number:
#61: Alex Callahan (1957-'58), (Donald Dugger 1951, '53), Lloyd Henevald (1948-'49), John Gallagher (1943), Stanley Broadnax (1965), Nate Rodgers (1983-'84)

Enough of these:
#93 is the jersey they give planetoids who don't pan out: Alex Ofili, Jason Kates, Marques Slocum, Ray Edmonds, Erik Knuth, Jason Ptak, and Ron Kocan—they all share Ofili's single start.

Bring it back:
#65: It had a great run after Dominic Tomasi then went to backups in the '70s and disappeared thereafter.

Defensive Tackle (DT, 3T, 3-4 DE, 4-3 under 5T) #11

Francis Wistert, Albert Wistert, Alvin Wistert

So 60 has Messner, and Buster Stanley. 97 has Hutch and a pair of decent early 2000s DTs. 77 has two All-Americans, one of whom goes by "Sheriff" because prior to playing for Michigan Milan Lazetich was the sheriff of his Montana town.

But we have to talk about the Wisterts, who mic-dropped their retired number for this position before we even got to the second half of the 20th century. The Wisterts would be the Hughes family if all three played for Michigan (Jack after 10 years of doing manual labor). Except it was football, and they all played both ways in three different eras: Francis for Kipke, Albert for Crisler, and Alvin for Oosterbaan. All three were All-Americans. All three are members of the College Football Hall of Fame. Between them they have four national championships.

Francis "Whitey" Wistert was the eldest of five children of Lithuanian immigrants—their father was a police officer killed in the line of duty when Whitey was 15. At 6'2"/210 he was big for his era, a star on the offensive line. In an era of misdirection on misdirection Whitey defensively was particularly hard to fool. Third brother Albert "Ox" Wistert was the most talented and second to play for Michigan. His line play was cited as the reason Michigan beat Notre Dame in '42, a game that was only slightly less important than the War. Second bro Alvin "Moose" Wistert was the third to come to Michigan, the largest of the three, and the least likely to end up a Michigan football star. Moose dropped out of high school worked in a factory until WWII, when he served in the Marines. He took the GI bill to Boston University at Age 30 then transferred to Michigan. He was the defensive star of the championship '47 and '48 teams, and captain of the '49 team, at 33.

Other contenders:
#72 Robert Wahl, Jim Orwing (1955-'57), Bill Pritula ('46-'48), James Balog (1952-'53), Clement Bauman (1944), John Yanz (1963-'64)
#60: Mark Messner, Buster Stanley, Grant Bowman
#97 Chris Hutchinson, Shawn Lazarus, Will Johnson, Jeff Perlinger, Chris Ziemann
#68: Albert Wistert for a year, Stu Wilkins, Gregory Ellis
#75 : Bill Yearby, Bruce Hilkene, Richard Williams, Ralph Stribe, Doug Troszak, William Kolesar
#76: Trent Zenkewicz, Tom Johnson, Ed Meads, Jon Schopf, Mike Leoni, Ralph Kohl, Charles Ruzicka
#61: Alex Callahan, Don Dugger, John Marcum, John Gallagher, Lloyd Heneveld, Nate Rogers
#90: Ninef Aghakhan, Norman Heuer, Michael Keller, Juaquin Feazell, Chris Godfrey, Vinny DeFelice

Enough of these:
So much of recent history had Greg Mattison or Brady Hoke coaching the DL and they're really good at finding and developing this kind of guy. Plus, like, do you want a number nobody's worn since 1969 (74?). All numbers are open for DTs.

Bring it back:
#91: Josh Williams had 34 starts, only two other tackles have worn it.
#39: Henry Hill, Edwin Poorman Will Heininger. Everyone who wore it started.
#80: Alan Branch is all alone.
#11: Surely we can find a dollop of Wistertian blood today to be worthy of unretiring this. Cross with some Glasgow genes and let's goooooo!

Defensive End/Edge: #56

LaMarr Woodley (2003-'06), James Hall (1997-'99), Bill Hewitt (1929-'31), Edgar Madsen (1924)

This is a weird position grouping: I included all work done as a 4-3 defensive end (4-3 under 5-techs went with the DTs) all the way out to 3-4 OLBs, so we're including weakside ends, SAMs, and all of those 5-2 Oklahoma ends from the '60s and '70s. Basically guys expected to pass rush and hold the edge of the line.

I think when I announced I was doing this people figured #56 would take this position because of Woodley and Hall. Once glance below at the competition should tell you that wouldn't have cut it. The number nearly disappeared when budding star sophomore end Edgar Madsen suddenly died of pneumonia in 1924:

…and the Daily suggested his number be retired.

What did put them over the top was Bill Hewitt, an NFL hall of famer, whose number 56 was retired by the Chicago Bears when he left as the last NFL player to refuse to wear a helmet. He played end and fullback for Michigan and was the MVP of the '31 team that had Maynard Morrison, Charles Bernard, Harry Newman, Ted Petoskey, and a Wistert on it.

After Hewitt, reserve end Chester Stabovitz (name team!) then 1937-'38 starter Vincent Valek wore it.

James Hall burst into opponents' backfields by earning a starting job as a true sophomore in 1997. As with Woodley, they'd call Hall an "RLB" as the weakside end of Michigan's base 4-3 Under; Hall went on to a productive NFL career as an undersized yet unblockable edge rusher. As for Woodley, here's an insane and grainy video that includes videogame clips until Wolverine Historian makes us a better one:

Other contenders:
#86 John Anderson (1975-'77), Martin Davis (1990-'92), Gene Knutson (1952-'53), Gary Prahst (1957-'58), Oswald Clark (1948-'50), Bob Brown (1962), Steve Thibert (1985-'87) Donald Eeaton (1972-'73)

#6: Paul Goebel as a junior (1921—he wore #1 in his All-American year), Victor Hobson (1999-2002), David Bowens (1995-'96), Prescott Burgess (played SAM in 2005)

Enough of these:
#95: That one Alain Kashama game is carrying this alone. Whiffs including Patrick Kratus, Chris Rock and Bob Rosema
#93: Three starts by soph and jr Mike Lemirade in the '80s are the contributions from 20 seasons of edge guys wearing this, most recently Chris Rodgers and Lawrence Marshall (who'll contribute at DT this year if he ever does)

Bring it back:
#6: The four guys above are the only edge players to wear it, and single digits are cool.

Middle Linebacker: #37

Jarrett Irons (1993-'96), Erick Anderson (1988-'91), Tony Rio (1957-'59), Tom Kee (1972), Chris Graham (2005-'07), Zach Kaufman (2000-'03), Mel Anthony (1963), and Jake Ryan as a redshirting freshman

I'm sorry, but if you were expecting another number to stand for Michigan middle linebackers you shouldn't have sent a guy born in 1979 to make the picks. I'm all about the doom squirrel archetype that Larry Foote and Ian Gold pioneered after, but there was something about a thumpin' neck-rolled bad-ass screaming up the middle and ending a guy that shaped my early understanding for good defense, and that's all thanks to Mr. Anderson and Mr. Irons. Anderson doesn't have a highlight reel but start The Game of 1991 at 12:00 and start counting how often 37 is around the ball.

With Anderson still fresh in memory, Irons came up, and starting tackling everything in sight. He was named captain his junior year in 1995 and by the end of 1996 he led Michigan in career tackles. I might have written in my high school paper that Sam Sword should switch to 37 in '97 since 93 is a weird number for a linebacker.

Here are all the MLBs, WLBs, plus fullbacks (the original linebackers), centers (the original middle linebackers), and a handful of 5-3 era right guards. Tony Rio, who also played some offense but let Gene Sisinyak take most of those snaps, lost most of his junior year in '58 for leading gambling ring. Rio pled to a misdemeanor and came back to captain the '59 team, when his famous luck led to a nine fumble recoveries.

Mel Anthony switched to full-time offense in 1963 when the NCAA eased the 1952 platooning restrictions but he was a good linebacker before that. Tom Kee was a 2nd team All-American to both the AP and UPI in 1972 playing weakside linebacker in Bo's 5-2 defense that gave up just 57 points all year and would have finished unbeaten but for a legendary referee jobbing in Columbus.

More recently we've had Chris Graham, who is not related to Brandon and should definitely not be lined up on a slot receiver, but was a decent and longtime starter. Zach Kaufman too was rather unheralded for mostly okay play, but his reputation was salvaged by the drop-off in WLB play after he was injured in 2002.

Other contenders:
#48: President Gerald R. Ford (1932-'34), Desmond Morgan (2012-'14), Jack Weisenburger (1946-'47), Dave Dobreff (1990-'93)
#33 Mike Taylor (1970-'71), Don Lund (1942-'44), Carl Russ (1973-'74), Wayne Sparkman (1962-'63), Tom Peterson (1947-'48), James Byers (1957), Marrell Evans (2008)
#57: Maynard Morrison (1929-'31), Tim Anderson (1983-'84), James Dickey (1958), Chris Singletary (1997-'98)
#53: Dick O'Shaughnessy (1951-'53), Jerry Goebel (1955-'57), Mel Owens (1977-'79), Thomas Cecchini (1963-'65), Robert Erben (1948-'49)
#2: Jack Blott (1923), Ernie Vick (1921), Cedric Smith (1915-'16), and future M coach Elton Wieman (1917)

Enough of these:
#51: With respect to Jerry Smith, lately this has been Eric Brackins, Max Pollack, Michael Ferns, and walk-ons. Shoulda stopped at John Duerr

Bring it back:
#93. The other positions aren't doing anything with it, and Sword!

Safeties & Hybrids: #25

Tom Curtis (1967-'69), Ernest Shazor (2002-'04), Dymonte Thomas (2014-'16)

[Right: Fuller]

This position has given me trouble every edition of this series because of the long safety drought in the 2000s. The great old ones weren't a lot of help either because they often stashed some fast guy who couldn't hit back there to prevent the offense from punting when it wasn't their turn (this was a problem until the 1960s). Around the time Bo arrived teams began moving their fullback into a position very similar to the Viper in Don Brown's defense, and Bo changed the term to "Wolfman". Eventually the wolfman or whatever other cool name you could come up with became the strong safety. I counted those and modern Vipers.

Choosing a number was tough: the leaders all have two All-American seasons plus a decent player then a drop-off. For #3 I told myself I would count Marlin's cornerback work there—his year at safety was good but injured after six games. But Tripp Welborne had two A-A seasons in A-squared and Stevie Brown was good as a senior at Spur—Shonte Peoples played on some good defenses but I mostly recall him getting beat. I had another out with #35, with two great safeties from Bo's early years. But Chuck Winters as 3rd guy over Dymonte or even Stevie? Nuh.

So let's finally acknowledge Mr. Ernest Shazor's Thorpe season, which gets dogged for being too hitty and not enough coveragey but it was majorly hitty. And 'twas that hitty that saved the season:

Let's also acknowledge that Tom Curtis is probably the best safety in Michigan history (Dave Brown '72-'74 is the competition). Arriving as a quarterback Curtis moved to safety before his sophomore season and started 8 games as a sophomore, setting Michigan's single-game INT record with three against Illinois—he had 7 that year. He wasn't done, picking off 10 balls in '68, and 8 more in 1969. Never actually that fast, Curtis nevertheless dominated by reading the offense. His 25 interceptions in the pre-let's-pass-a-lot era remain a school record.

Dymonte Thomas was good, never exceptional, splitting time at strong safety with Delano Hill in 2015 then starting at free safety for the even better 2016 defense after a few underclass years when we wondered if he might be moved to receiver. Dymonte was the best at corralling slippery dudes in open space, a useful skill in a Big Ten era with Saquon Barkley, Ezekiel Elliott, J.T. Barrett, Curtis Samuel, Akrum Wadley, Lorenzo Harrison and Ty Johnson in it.

Other contenders:
#3: Tripp Welborne (1988-'90), Marlin Jackson (part of 2003), Shonte Peoples (1992-'93), Stevie Brown (2007-'09), Marvin Robinson (2010-'12)
#35: Don Dufek (1973-'75), Tom Darden (1969-'71), Chuck Winters (1993-'95), Dieter Haren (1984)
#17: Dwight (1975-'77) and Ivan (1984-'86) Hicks, Otis Williams (1990-'91), Clarence Thompson (1993), Deollo Anderson (1992)
#14: Tony Gant (1983-'86), Frank Gusich (1970-'71), Josh Metellus (2017), Josh Furman (2013)
#41: Randy Logan (1971-'72) and Tommy Hendricks (1997-'99)
#49: Rich Volk (1964-'66), Chuch Ortmann (1950), Bob Ptaceck (1958)

Enough of these:
#19: Willis Barringer is the only 19 to start, and he only started so much (17 games!) because of Angry Michigan Safety-Hating God.

Bring it back:
#85: Michigan was later than most schools to go to a pair of safeties after offenses began using split ends as receivers in the early 1950s because Lowell Perry, one of those fancy new receivers himself, could cover ground like a modern NFL free safety.

Cornerback: #3

Marlin Jackson (2002, '04), John Maulbetsch (1915-'16), Todd Howard (1999-'02), Marion Body (1980-'82)

The other reason I didn't use 3 above because we've got three All-American seasons from two guys, and a lot of starts from the backup cast. Historically halfbacks played something closer to what a safety does today—it wasn't until the 1960s that platoon football created a need for guys who can cover a crazy receiving target on his own.

We'll start with the guy you haven't met a bunch of times, because he's more local. John "Maulie" Maulbetsch grew up in Ann Arbor (Pioneer), but transferred to Michigan at 21 after a year at Adrian College, where Maulie beat up on Yost's freshman squad. Yost called him "Another Willie Heston" which would be like someone using the Barry Sanders tag today. In his first year playing for Michigan Malbetsch was nicknamed the "German Bullet" or the "Human Bullet" because dude was known to scream down from his halfback (think of a Cover 2 safety) position into whatever gap was being tried. He won national notoriety by nearly beating Harvard singlehandedly in 1914 (his All-American season), and was blamed for Harvard canceling the rematch in Ann Arbor in 1915. They needn't have bothered: Maulbetsch was out with appendicitis that year and came back not quite himself. But he recovered to captain the 1916 team. Tiny even for his day he was nicknamed the "Featherweight Fullback" as a pro, and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Michigan gives out the John Maulbetsch Award to their favorite freshman every year. That has a nickname too.

The 2002 recipient of the Maulbetsch Award was Marlin Jackson, who switched to Maulie the Human Bullet German Bullet Featherweight Fullback Another Willie Heston's number after his (Marlin's) freshman season. That freshman season was promising but didn't say anything about an All-American sophomore performance, when he wracked up PBUs and tackles. In 2003 Marlin tried to solve that nagging free safety problem himself, then turned down the NFL for another All-American senior season when he did as much as Braylon to send a freshman-quarterbacked team to the Rose Bowl. Marlin's 2002 game against Washington star receiver Reggie Williams is one of the greatest single-game performances in Michigan history. Marlin is also well known to this here site because he went on to found the Fight For Life Foundation, a super-modern, model youth services charity that we'd believe in strongly even if it wasn't created by one of the greatest players in Michigan football history.

I didn't leave much room to talk about Todd Howard, who's joined us for a number of events, mostly in Chicago, since he now coaches in his native(ish*) Bolingbrook. In his playing days Todd was the short cornerback we complained about less because James Whitley was a bigger issue, but spoiled as we were by Woodson, we couldn't appreciate a solid undersized guy who could tackle. Howard would start 34 games for Michigan from 1999-'01, when he played opposite Mr. Jackson above.

* (Todd grew in Southfield, same grade, different elementaries, just across Telegraph from me, but we both moved away before middle school)

We were too young to remember Marion Body who was recruited by Jack Harbaugh and ended up being coached by Harbaugh's replacement Lloyd Carr. Body was inserted as the fist dimeback in the history of football in 1980 as part of Michigan's plan to stop Purdue's potent shotgun passing attack; Body collected one of four interceptions thrown that day by up-to-then Heisman frontrunner Mark Herrmann. Body also picked off two against Notre Dame that year, but is best known for getting called for pass interference to set up ND's winning kick. He started most of '81 and '82 at cornerback, but they learned to stay away from Body's field side after '80. Or the dance he did after they stuffed Illinois:

Other contenders:
#18: Bump Elliott (1947), Jim Pickens (1975-'76), Blake Countess (2011-'13), Leo Koceski (1948-'49), Ralph Chubb (1946), James Rogers (2010)
#16: Mike Jolly (1977-'79), Paul White (1941-'43, '46), Fred Julian (1957-'59), Ed Shannon (1954-'56), Ralph Chubb (1944), Willie Heston, Jr. (1930)
#22: Ty Law (1992-'94), Lance Dottin (1989-'91), Jim Bolden (1975-'76), Glenn Doughty (1969-'70), David Long (2017-?), Gerald White (1984)
#30: Bradley Cochran (1983-'85), Andre Weathers (1997-'98), Markus Curry (2002-'04)
#14: Morgan Trent (2005-'08), Harry Kipke (1921), Dick Sygar (1963-' 64), Don Oldham (1951-'52), Mike Shatusky (1957), Gary McNitt (1960), and Dick "Pick" Vick …sorry, sorry, growing up now (1923)

Enough of these:
#5: James "Future Star of the XFL" Whitley, Courtney Avery, Coleman Wallace who played as turned around as his name, and Charles Stewart. As long as we count Peppers at safety (I do).

Bring it back:
#46: Used to be a big number for Michigan halfbacks.

Special Teams: #19

Remy Hamilton Mike Gillette, Bob Bergeron, Carl Ward, Ronald Bellamy

Three of Michigan's greatest kickers all wore the same number so I had to go with this one over 6, but check out 6 after.

Bob Bergeron was the tiny guy with a huge leg. A walk-on, Bergeron held plackekicking duties for 1983 and '84, going 28/32, earning one all-conference decision and, that Iowa game, and a pizza. After Bergeron Mike Gilette, an all-state quarterback with MAC offers to play under center, took the same number and became the leading scorer in Michigan history thanks to 53 FGs, 130 XPs, and that touchdown—also his 56-yarder is the longest by a Michigan kicker. Gillette was also a strong punter, averaging 40 yards as the team's punter in 1988. Remy Hamilton, who kicked from 1993 to 1996, holds most of the volume Michigan records: five in game, 30 in a season, 63 in a career, 82 attempts. His 4-4 performance vs Notre Dame in 1994 is among the best outings for a Michigan kicker, even if he couldn't tackle Mike Miller.

Carl Ward was a backup running back and all-around offensive weapon who helped Michigan get back to the Rose Bowl in 1964. Naturally he was the kick returner for 1964-'66 (more on the punt returner in a moment). Ron Bellamy was Michigan's primary punt returner in 2000, averaging 11 yards per return though he only ever broke one long (against Rice). He was also a fixture on kickoff and punt units since he got down the field faster than anyone else on the team.

Other contenders:

#6: KR Tyrone Wheatley, PK Ali Haji-Sheikh, PR David Brown (3 punt return TDs from 1972-'74), PK Peter Elezovic, KOS Troy Nienberg (2001-'02, also wore 10)
#3: Ross Ryan, Robert Wood (1973-'76), Brandon Kornblue (1996-'97), Marlin Jackson (his only punt return was the Wisconsin TD), Tripp Welbourne, Quinn Nordin, Brad Robbins
#1: Six return TDs between Derrick Alexander (4) and Anthony Carter (2)
#38: Garrett Rivas (2003-'06), JD Carlson (1989-'91), Erik Lovell (1993-'94), Jason Vinson (1995-'98)

Enough of these:

#34: Since Brabbs it's been Gingell, the scholarship guy who was so bad it doomed the Rodriguez years to walk-ons, and Gibbons, who was a good kicker who should have been removed from the team his redshirt season. There's also Justin Fargas who couldn't catch a kickoff. Retire it for Brabbs.

Bring it back:

#12: For now (Chris Evans be comin'), the last player to wear #12 at Michigan for an entire career remains cornerback/gunner Brandon Williams (1999-'02), who collected that muffed punt return against Wisconsin and delightfully didn't know he couldn't run it in. B-Will, one of the fastest players in Michigan history, is probably the best gunner we've ever had. George Hoey wore it in the mid-'60s and averaged 17 yards per punt return in 31 returns, with 1 TD. Peppers, for reference, averaged 13.1 yards, and Derrick Alexander was at 12.7 despite 4 TDs. Blake O'Neill had that bad thing but until then it was the best game by a punter in Michigan history. Also in '89 there was a kicker named Gulam Khan, which is just a perfect setup for a kicker at a nerd school. More 12's on special teams.

The All-Numbers Team

  • QB: #7, for Leach, Henson, Henne
  • RB: #42, Boles, Billy Taylor, Wally Teninga
  • FB: #33, Hoard, Don Lund, Peterson, Russ Davis, Hurley, Sparkman Byers, Dave Fisher, et al
  • TE: #88, Butt, Mandich, McGee, Freehan, Harry Allis, Massaquoi, Dunaway, Madar, Campbell, others
  • WR: #1, Duh. If anything I underrated McMurtry and I'm sorry.
  • OT: #77, Not as duh as you might think but Long, Lewan, Jansen, Art Walker, Lazetich, Trezelle, Pape, & Newsome
  • OG: #65, Kurt Becker, Reggie McKenzie, Omameh, Henige, others
  • C: #59: Lilja plus Dworsky, Momsen, Balourdos
  • NT: #96: Will Carr, Ryan Glasgow
  • DT: #11: The Wisterts
  • DE/Edge: #56: Woodley, Hall, Hewitt, Madsen
  • LB: #37: Irons, Anderson, Rio, Kee, others
  • S: #25: Tom Curtis, Shazor, Dymonte
  • CB: #3: Marlin, Maultbetsch, Howard, Body
  • STs: #19: Remy, Gillette, Bergeron

Nope. You need more than one dude there or else this is just a silly "Let's name the best player at each position" exercise and thus boring. The only corners or halfbacks (in the single platoon era) to wear 2 were Woodson and one year of Blake Countess that wasn't his best year. JT Turner rode pine.

When does 2 get retired? Howards was given a legends patch in 2011 (20 years after his college career ended). Althought the official retirement came in 2015 with the end of the legends program.

Coming up on 21 years since Woodson.

Sorry, I'm about the same age as you and when I close my eyes and picture an all time defense it is #3 at Safety (Tripp Welborne) and #2 at Corner (Woodson may be the only one.....but he was the GOAT).

Teen Challenge women's home
Last weekend we (Jan and Marja) were visiting the country of Lithuania. At the end of May we presented project Teen Challenge women's home on this blog and we have now been able to transfer a donation of 6,000 euro for renovation of the roof.

By the way, that is only half of the amount calculated for this job. [Should anyone have a good idea to raise more funds ....]

We had an open invitation to come to Lithuania for years. Finally, the time was there. We received  a warm welcome from Edvardas & Rasa Kleinas, the directors of Teen Challenge Lithuania. They were our guides for the weekend :)
Edvardas & Rasa

We paid a visit to the women's center where we got a tour of the entire property.

There are currently 19 women and 6 children in this residential program. Actually, they are two houses. A large house (on the right, in the picture) where everyone sleeps, also the workers and volunteers, and a smaller house where the dining room, recreation room and the classroom are located.

Sharing testimonies
We met with the women and children, listened to their testimonies, shared a practical life lesson from the Bible and prayed with and for each other. Most women are here because of problems with alcohol and drugs, homelessness, crime and/or because they are tired of the street life.

For many it is the first place where they get to know God's love, mercy and forgiveness. Slowly but surely they receive hope for recovery!

Teen Challenge men's center
Later that day, after a scrumptious lunch, we went to visit the men's center. A beautiful farm where 19 men are currently in the program. We spent a lot of time with them, listened to their stories and prayed with each one of them. One man decided to invite Jesus Christ into his life, something he had not yet come to do.

The stories were intense, as always: alcohol, drugs, prison sentences, criminal activities etc. What a joy that there is a place where these men can recover, make a new start and be prepared for healthy participation in society.

Encouraging one another
The director of the center, Andrej Bersenovas, went through this very program 15 years (!) ago!

The men's center also offers help for boys who, at the age of 18, come out of orphanages and have no place to go. There are ideas to build a house for them on the property (perhaps a project we can support in the future).

Sunday morning we were invited to speak in Kauno Krikščionių Bažnyčia, a church with a big heart 💗for the work of Teen Challenge. Great to see the women and men from the rehabilitation centers here again.

Sunday morning service
We are grateful for the kindness and trust of pastor Rytis and Valda Berūkštis with whom we spoke extensively while enjoying excellent meals. We endorse the importance of good relationships with local churches.

You can view the Sunday morning service HERE.

Edvardas and Rasa also showed us around Kaunas and the capital Vilnius. Fantastic, such beautiful cities, well worth a visit!

Sharing God's love (+ Teen Challenge cards)
It is also a good time to pray for a spiritual revival in the Baltic states. From August 30 to September 2nd, Awakening Europe Baltija 2018 will take place in Riga (Latvija) ... and it is no coincidence that we also support a project there :)

The projects we support as a Traveling Light offer the opportunity to visit nations (at our own expense) and see what God is doing around Europe!

GIFTS (large and small) are always welcome and can be directed at St. Traveling Light in Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U.

We are grateful for your support.

For the remainder of this week and through the weekend, I’m in Trakai, Lithuania – just outside the capital of Vilnius – for our 9th annual Blacksmith Liberty & Entrepreneurship Camp. Each summer, I host 60+ students from around the world in this picturesque setting. But these aren’t your normal “students.” These are entrepreneurs. Some have already started businesses and are seeking the next step in their professional development. Others are still in the early stages of exploring different business ideas. Regardless of where our students fall on the spectrum, this experience is a valuable experience that they won’t get anywhere else. These four days are far from a traditional […]
'The archive will not be safe in Iraq'      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
A Senate resolution sponsored by four US senators will attempt to delay and even reverse the US government's commitment to returning the 'Iraqi-Jewish archive' to Baghdad. One reason is that there are no longer any Jews able to care for or see it. Report in the Tribune Review:

Dr Harold Rhode sifting through the waterlogged items of the Iraqi-Jewish archive in 2003. Dr Rhode was the first to identify the books and documents of the collection as Jewish.

The collection, known as the Iraqi Jewish Archive, is scheduled to be returned to Iraqi next month. If that happens, experts fear neglect could pose a new threat to the sensitive materials.

“I really don’t think they’ll be safe in Iraq,” said Carole Basri, an attorney and documentary filmmaker who has deeply researched the archive and Iraq’s Jewish history.

Heading an effort to postpone the archive’s return is U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Lehigh Valley, the prime sponsor of a resolution urging the U.S. State Department to renegotiate the return.

“My concern is Iraq is really no longer a good place to store this Jewish historical treasure since there are no Jews to safeguard it, to see it, to care for this treasure,” Toomey told the Tribune-Review.

Included in the archive is a 400-year-old Hebrew Bible, a German rabbi’s sermons from 1692, a 200-year-old Talmud and thousands of other books printed in Italy, Jerusalem, Turkey and Lithuania. Among the books are the writings of the famous late 19th-century Baghdadi interpreter of Jewish law Rabbi Yosef Hayyim, who is often referred to by the name of his most famous work, the Ben Ish Hai.

New publications of the Ben Ish Hai’s work stand to influence how Jews interpret law today, said Rabbi Raymond Sultan, director of Sephardic Heritage Museum, which is about to publish a third book of the Ben Ish Hai’s work from the archive.

“There is a lot of stuff people will definitely use to formulate law,” Sultan said.
Also included are school and financial records, lists of residents, university applications and other community records that document Jewish life in Iraq from the 1920s through 1953.

Toomey’s resolution, cosponsored by Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, cites the Iraq government’s anti-Semitic policies from the 1930s onward — including making Zionism punishable by death and confiscating Jewish artifacts — to make a case against returning the archive.

Top Middle East intel official says Mossad behind killing of Syrian rocket chief-New York Times quotes senior figure from intelligence agency in the region; Israeli cabinet minister refuses to comment on report but says it's a 'good thing' Aziz Azbar is dead-By TOI staff and Agencies-AUG 8,18

A senior official from a Middle East intelligence agency has pointed the finger at Israel’s Mossad for the killing of  a top Syrian chemical weapons and rocket scientist over the weekend, The New York Times reported Tuesday, reinforcing accusations from Syria.Aziz Azbar was killed when his car exploded in the northern city of Masyaf late Saturday night. The unnamed official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the paper  that Israel was behind the attack and said his own intelligence agency had been informed of the Israeli operation.A senior Israeli government official declined to comment on the report Tuesday, but noted it was “a good thing” that Azbar was dead.A pro-government Syrian paper on Sunday had accused the Mossad of being behind the hit. Azbar’s driver was also killed in the blast.According to the report, Israel believed that Azbar was leading a classified weapons development program called Sector 4 at the Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Center, and was busy re-building an underground weapons factory to replace the one said destroyed by Israel last year.Azbar was working alongside Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani, the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ elite al-Quds Force and enjoyed high-level access to both the Syrian and Iranian governments, the New York Times said.Azbar and his team were working to begin mass-producing precision-guided missiles by retrofitting SM600 Tishreen rockets. They were also working on a solid-fuel plant for missiles and rockets, a safer alternative to liquid fuel, the report said. The Tishreen is a Syrian version of the Iranian Fateh-110, a missile with a range of 200 kilomenters (125 miles.) On Sunday the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the Syria war through local contacts, also reported Azbar’s death. It said he specialized in developing rocket systems at the center’s Masyaf facility in Hama.Israel’s Hadashot TV news said Sunday night he was in charge of a project improving the range and accuracy of the regime’s Scud missiles. Reports have also indicated an Iranian missile operation at the site. The intelligence official also told The New York Times that Azbar had for years been active in the Assad regime’s chemical-weapons production program and was also involved in coordinating Iranian and Hezbollah activities in Syria. The Scientific Research and Studies Center in Masyaf, also known by its French acronym CERS, has long been associated with chemical weapons production, and was the target of a number of airstrikes attributed to Israel. An alleged Israeli strike on the site in April reportedly killed a number of Iranian soldiers. The official quoted in The New York Times Tuesday said that Israel had been tracking Azbar for years, and had wanted to assassinate him over his prominent role in Syria’s weapons program even before the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011. He said it was the fourth time in three years the Mossad has assassinated an enemy weapons engineer in a foreign country.Israel has been blamed for the killing of several scientists in recent years, including two Hamas engineers in the last 18 months.A Hamas rocket scientist was shot dead by gunmen in Malaysia in April and a drone engineer was killed in Tunisia in December 2016. Hamas blamed the Mossad for both deaths.Israel does not usually comment on reports of its alleged military operations in Syria but has repeatedly warned it would work to keep advanced weapons out of Hezbollah terrorists’ hands and has vowed to stop Iran establishing a military presence in the country. On Tuesday, Gilad Erdan who heads the Public Security and Strategic Affairs ministries declined to comment on Israel’s involvement in Azbar’s killing, but said it was “a good thing” that he was dead.“We obviously do not comment on these kinds of reports — neither confirming nor denying them — but we can talk about the man himself, who was responsible for putting high quality weapons in the hands of some bad people, and so we can say that the fact he is no longer with us is a good thing,” he told Israel Radio when asked about the New York Times report.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman on Sunday sought to downplay the possibility of Israeli involvement.“Every day in the Middle East there are hundreds of explosions and settling of scores. Every time they try to place the blame on us. So we won’t take this too seriously,” he told Hadashot News.An insurgent group calling itself the Abu Amara Brigades claimed responsibility for the operation. The group has previously claimed attacks targeting officials and militia commanders inside government territory. In April 2017, the Trump administration placed sanctions on hundreds of CERS employees following a chemical attack on the Syrian rebel-held city of Khan Sheikhoun that killed dozens of civilians, including children.Another CERS facility near Damascus was bombed by US, British and French forces in April after another chemical attack. The Syrian regime has been accused of dozens of gas attacks that have killed hundreds of civilians during the war, even after it said it was giving up its stockpile.

Israeli minister says ‘good chance’ Iran will renegotiate nuclear deal-Gilad Erdan slams 'morally bankrupt' EU for trying to salvage accord; Israeli intelligence community said optimistic that new sanctions will force major change in Tehran-By TOI staff-AUG 8,18

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan on Tuesday praised the US for reimposing tough sanctions on Iran that brought back into effect the harsh penalties lifted under the Iran nuclear deal.“It would be better if the Iranian regime would disappear entirely from this world, but it would also be a blessing to see Obama’s bad nuclear agreement replaced with a better one,” he told Israel Radio. US President Donald Trump abandoned the deal in May.“In my opinion, there is a good chance of that,” said Erdan, who also heads the Strategic Affairs Ministry. “We can already see positive results from what Trump did.”Erdan criticized the European Union for trying to salvage the deal by ensuring that economic benefits guaranteed under the 2015 accord continue to flow to the country.“The EU is morally bankrupt, and we need to remember that next time they try to lecture us,” Erdan said. The EU, along with China, Russia, France, Germany and the UK, was also a signatory to the deal and has not withdrawn. In Israel, the reimposition of US sanctions was lauded as a historic turning point that could ultimately lead to the Islamic Republic’s downfall. On Tuesday, Israel Radio quoted an unnamed senior official who said the Israeli intelligence community was optimistic the sanctions would lead to major changes in Iran and force Tehran to renegotiate the deal.“We would like to see a change in policy, but there is no way of knowing how long that will take,” the official said.“The only hammer available right now is economic, and using that, there is a good change Iran will fall to its knees,” he said. “Right now Iran is weak and hysterical.”The new sanctions on Iran took effect just after midnight in Washington on Tuesday as part of Trump’s withdrawal from the international accord designed to limit Iran’s nuclear program.Trump signed an executive order restoring the penalties on Monday, which he said would put “maximum economic pressure” on the country. The sanctions affect financial transactions that involve US dollars, Iran’s automotive sector, the purchase of commercial planes and metals including gold.A second batch of US sanctions targeting Iran’s oil sector and central bank are to be reimposed in early November.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump for ratcheting up pressure on the Islamic Republic, and called on European nations to follow his lead.“It symbolizes the determination to curb Iran’s regional aggression and its ongoing plans to arm itself with nuclear weapons,” Netanyahu said in a video released Monday. On Monday, the European Union’s diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini said the bloc, as well as Britain, France and Germany, deeply regretted Washington’s move.“We are determined to protect European economic operators engaged in legitimate business with Iran,” she said in a statement. Many large European firms are leaving Iran for fear of US penalties, and Trump warned of “severe consequences” against firms and individuals that continued to do business with Iran. The impact of the return of sanctions has ramped up tensions inside Iran, which has seen days of protests and strikes in multiple towns and cities over water shortages, high prices and wider anger at the political system.Severe reporting restrictions have made it impossible to verify the swirl of claims coming through social media.Agencies contributed to this report.

Fresh US sanctions on Iran kick in as clock hits midnight-Reimposition of economic restrictions as part of Trump's withdrawal from nuclear deal met with cheers in Jerusalem, jeers in Tehran and Europe-By TOI staff-AUG 8,18

New US sanctions on Iran took effect just after midnight in Washington on Tuesday as part of President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the international accord meant to limit the Iranian nuclear program. On Monday, Trump signed an executive order restoring sanctions on Iran, which he said would would put “maximum economic pressure” on the country. He also held out hope for new negotiations between Iran and the United States that would result in another, more wide-ranging, accord. The new sanctions target Iran’s automotive sector and trade in gold and precious metals. They come ahead of even more biting sanctions set to be introduced on November 5 against the country’s energy and banking sectors. While cheered by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior Israeli officials, the reimposition of US sanctions was bemoaned by the nuclear deal’s European signatories and the EU, who defended the accord and vowed to protect European firms from US economic penalties. In a White House statement announcing the sanctions, Trump repeated his criticisms of the deal, and argued that Iran’s behavior since the pact was implemented has vindicated his long-held position.“The JCPOA, a horrible, one-sided deal, failed to achieve the fundamental objective of blocking all paths to an Iranian nuclear bomb, and it threw a lifeline of cash to a murderous dictatorship that has continued to spread bloodshed, violence, and chaos,” Trump said.“Since the deal was reached, Iran’s aggression has only increased. The regime has used the windfall of newly accessible funds it received under the JCPOA to build nuclear-capable missiles, fund terrorism, and fuel conflict across the Middle East and beyond.”Following Trump’s announced US departure from the deal in May, the White House has, through 17 rounds, sanctioned 38 Iran-related targets. The objective, the administration has indicated, is to change Iranian behavior.“Reimposition of nuclear-related sanctions through today’s actions further intensifies pressure on Tehran to change its conduct,” Trump said Monday. In May, Trump withdrew the United States from the Iran nuclear deal forged under the Obama administration and with five other world powers, a move that set in motion a renewal of sanctions against Iran that had been removed once the landmark accord was implemented in January 2016.In Israel, the reimposition of US sanctions was lauded as a historic turning point that could ultimately lead to the Islamic Republic’s downfall, with senior officials calling on other countries to follow suit.“It symbolizes the determination to curb Iran’s regional aggression and its ongoing plans to arm itself with nuclear weapons,” said Netanyahu in a video released Monday, moments after Trump signed new sanctions into law.Jerusalem’s warm embrace of the US sanctions in Iran stood in stark contrast to the European Union, which said it would move to protect countries that remain in Iran.“We deeply regret the re-imposition of sanctions by the US, due to the latter’s withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” the union’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, and the foreign ministers of the UK, France and Germany said in a joint statement, using the nuclear deal’s technical name.“The JCPOA is working and delivering on its goal, namely to ensure that the Iranian program remains exclusively peaceful,” the statement went on. “It is a key element of the global nuclear non-proliferation architecture, crucial for the security of Europe, the region, and the entire world.”The European Commission vowed to oppose the new US sanctions regime, updating its so-called Blocking Statute that is aimed at “sustaining trade and economic relations between the EU and Iran.”In Tehran, President Hassan Rouhani rejected Trump’s call for renewed negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program, saying it was a statement intended only for American audiences and to foment chaos in Iran.In a televised interview, he said “Negotiations with sanctions doesn’t make sense. They are imposing sanctions on Iranian children, patients and the nation.” He was referring to fears that essential supplies such as medicines would be affected when sanctions return. He said Iran had “always welcomed negotiations,” but that Washington would first have to demonstrate it can be trusted.“If you’re an enemy and you stab the other person with a knife and then you say you want negotiations, then the first thing you have to do is remove the knife.”“How do they show they are trustworthy? By returning to the JCPOA,” he said, using the technical name for the 2015 nuclear deal.Rouhani fell back on the rhetoric of many of his predecessors by referencing the 1953 CIA-backed coup that overthrew Iran’s elected prime minister and cemented the shah’s rule.“I have no pre-conditions” for negotiating with America “if the US government is ready to negotiate about paying compensation to the Iranian nation from 1953 until now,” Rouhani said. “The US owes the Iranian nation for its intervention in Iran. Two weeks ago, Trump indicated that he was willing to meet with Iran’s leaders at any time and without any preconditions.“I would certainly meet with Iran if they’re ready to meet,” Trump said during a White House press conference, adding that he was willing to do so with “no preconditions.”The week before, Trump tweeted at Rouhani that Iran would “suffer consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before,” in a dramatic all-caps tweet. To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 23, 2018-His tweet was ostensibly a response to a speech Rouhani gave the night before in which he threatened that the United States would experience the “mother of all wars” if it entered into an armed confrontation with Iran.Agencies contributed to this report.

2 officers dismissed from elite army unit after training accidents-After 2 Maglan soldiers injured in separate incidents, IDF says it is 'unacceptable and unprofessional to unnecessarily endanger' troops during training-By TOI staff-AUG 8,18

The Israel Defense Forces announced on Monday the dismissal of two officers from an elite commando unit following a pair of recent training accidents in which soldiers were injured.Additionally, the commander of the platoon in which the officers served was reprimanded, the IDF said in a statement summarizing the investigation into the incidents led by Brig. Gen. Yaron Finkelman, head of the 98th Paratroopers Division. In one of the instances, a soldier from the Maglan unit was seriously injured during a training exercise while jumping from a moving vehicle into a thorn bush, according to the army. The soldier’s commander, who the army named only as First Lieutenant Y., was removed as a result of the incident. Finkelman also ordered a halt to all training exercises in the Commando Brigade until the investigation’s recommendations are implemented and the unit’s training files are reviewed.“The division commander determined this action was improper, unprofessional, immoral, dangerous and unnecessary,” the IDF said.In the second incident a soldier was moderately wounded during Krav Maga exercises but did not receive medical treatment immediately after. The army said the injury occurred during a Krav Maga demonstration in which protective equipment was not used. The IDF said the soldier’s commander, First Lieutenant G., was removed for “acting erroneously during the [Krav Maga] training and acted negligently by not sending the soldier for treatment.”Krav Maga exercises have been put on hold in the Commando Brigade until commanders and instructors undergo a “refresher” of the training commands, the army said. New mechanisms for oversight and approval of Krav Maga training in the brigade will also be introduced, the IDF added. The army said the findings of the investigation would be given to the Military Advocate General to decide whether to open a Military Police investigation. It also said commanders were in touch with the families of the injured soldiers.“The IDF takes risks in the face of the enemy as required to fulfill its operational duties,” the army said. “It is unacceptable and unprofessional to unnecessarily endanger soldiers during training and routine activities.”Parents of soldiers in the unit claimed to the Ynet news site earlier this week that routine training for the soldiers regularly crossed the threshold into violence. They also complained of the secrecy surrounding the activities of the unit, and said they relied on the officers and commanders to keep their children safe.Maglan is a special elite unit that operates behind enemy lines. The unit’s 18 months of training is among the most strenuous in the IDF.

GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

Firefighters battling 122 active forest fires across northern Ontario-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-August 8, 2018

Health care workers ask Tories to stop repeal of sex-ed curriculum-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-August 8, 2018

TORONTO — Nearly 1,800 health-care workers from across the province are asking the Tory government to stop plans to repeal and replace Ontario's modernized sex-ed curriculum. The group of doctors, nurses and social workers signed a petition that was delivered to the provincial legislature today by NDP Leader Andrea Horwath.Premier Doug Ford had long promised to scrap the sex-ed curriculum updated by his Liberal predecessors, and has said the government will engage in a province-wide consultation to create a new lesson plan. The government has said teachers will use a 1998 version of the curriculum this fall as those consultations are underway. The group of health-care workers who signed the petition says repealing the curriculum will put children's safety and mental health at risk by providing them with outdated information. In addition to individual workers, groups including the Registered Nurses of Ontario, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Ontario Association of Social Workers have signed the petition. The Canadian Press.

Largest wildfire in California history to burn for rest of August-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Dan Whitcomb-August 8, 2018

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - California's biggest wildfire on record was expected to burn for the rest of the month, fire officials said on Tuesday, as hot and windy conditions challenged thousands of fire crews battling eight major blazes burning out of control across the state. The Mendocino Complex grew to span 290,692 acres (117,639 hectares) by Tuesday morning, with barely a third of it contained since two wildfires merged at the southern tip of the Mendocino National Forest, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said.It is the largest of eight major fires burning out of control across California, prompting U.S. President Donald Trump to declare a "major disaster" in the state. The size of the fire has surpassed that of last year's Thomas Fire, which burned 281,893 acres in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties and destroyed more than 1,000 structures.Nearly half of the ten largest California wildfires on record occurred in the last decade. The Mendocino Complex has burnt 75 homes and forced the evacuation of thousands of people. Fire officials had hoped to extinguish the fire by mid-August, but pushed that date to early September on Tuesday.Temperatures could reach 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 Celsius) in Northern California over the next few days, with gusty winds fanning the flames of the complex, a National Weather Service meteorologist said. The 3,900 personnel battling the Mendocino Complex on Monday were focusing on keeping flames from breaking through fire lines on a ridge above the foothill communities of Nice, Lucerne, Glen Haven, and Clearlake Oaks, said Tricia Austin, a spokeswoman for Cal Fire.Elsewhere in California, evacuations were ordered for cabins in Cleveland National Forest's canyons in Orange County on Monday afternoon, after a blaze broke out to quickly engulf 700 acres (283 hectares). The Carr Fire, which has torched 167,000 acres in the scenic Shasta-Trinity region north of Sacramento since breaking out on July 23, was 47 percent contained. The Carr Fire has been blamed for seven deaths, including that of a 21-year-old Pacific Gas and Electric Company lineman Jay Ayeta. The company said on Sunday he was killed in a vehicle crash as he worked with crews in dangerous terrain."California wildfires are being magnified and made so much worse by the bad environmental laws which aren't allowing massive amount of readily available water to be properly utilized," Trump wrote on Twitter, without providing supporting evidence.A Cal Fire spokesman declined to comment on Trump's claims but said crews did not lack water to fight the flames.Environmental activists and some politicians say the intensity of the state's wildfire season could be linked in part to climate change.(Additional reporting by Brendan O'Brien in Milwaukee; Editing by Raissa Kasolowsky and Bernadette Baum)

Amnesty International calls for united front against Saudi Arabia-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-August 8, 2018

MONTREAL — Amnesty International says the global community should form a united front with Canada and speak out to protect two recently arrested women, including the sister of jailed blogger Raif Badawi.Genevieve Paul, the director of Amnesty's francophone branch, points out that pressure is put on the Saudi government when news of such arrests becomes public."I don't think it will worsen the situation because very often when we make evident unjust imprisonments, like the case of Samar Badawi, that increases their protection and increases pressure on the government," she said in an interview Monday.Amnesty International has said Badawi's sister was recently detained along with Nassima al-Sada, another prominent female activist.Paul pointed to the case of Raif Badawi as an example of how putting international pressure on the Saudis can have an impact."He was sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in prison, he received 50 lashes in 2015 and he could receive others, but he hasn't," she said."We do believe that this is because of continuous pressure and visibility on Raif's case so we're really hoping that more states speak out on Samar Badawi and all other activists."Paul stressed the situation is worse when the government does what it wants in secret and is not singled out for alleged human rights violations. "Clearly the aggressive reaction of the Saudi government shows that it's been disturbed," she added.Saudi Arabia said Sunday it was ordering Canada's ambassador to leave the country and freezing all new trade and investment transactions with Canada in a spat over human rights. The Islamic Kingdom made the decision in retaliation to a Global Affairs Canada's tweet that expressed concerns about the arrests of civil society and women's rights activists in the country, such as Samar Badawi.Paul said the Saudi government knows there are serious human rights violations in the country."It shows the real colours of the regime, and the international community should toughen its tone against the Saudi government," she said. The Amnesty spokeswoman noted a ban on women drivers was lifted in June, but that a number of activists who campaigned for the right to drive were arrested and face up to 20 years in prison."That's proof there's double talk, it's proof that there is no real reform in the country," she said. "On the contrary, the repression has intensified." She reiterated that Ottawa should suspend the sale of armoured vehicles to the Saudis, claiming that Amnesty still has strong reasons to believe they are being used in Yemen to commit serious human rights violations."We've been saying that without a serious human rights evaluation, we should not be transferring any military aid, any arms to Saudi Arabia," Paul said.Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said Monday the Canadian government will continue to raise its voice and defend human rights."We will always speak up for human rights, we will always speak up for women's rights around the world," she told reporters in Vancouver. "The most important thing for us is the life and the living conditions of activists."Ensaf Haidar, Raif Badawi's wife, who lives in Quebec with her three children, said Monday she was surprised when she heard about the two new arrests.Haidar and her children became Canadian citizens on Canada Day.Freeland also said Haidar and her family merit special attention from the government of Canada, adding, "a lot of Canadian civil society has been speaking up for her.""It's something that we do," Freeland said. "We stand up for Canadians and their families around the world."Peter Rakobowchuk , The Canadian Press.

For God or party? China's Christians face test of faith-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-August 8, 2018

NANYANG, China — The 62-year-old Chinese shopkeeper had waited nearly his entire adult life to see his dream of building a church come true — a brick house with a sunny courtyard and spacious hall with room for 200 believers. But in March, about a dozen police officers and local officials suddenly showed up at the church on his property and made the frightened congregants disperse. They ordered that the cross, a painting of the Last Supper and Bible verse calligraphy be taken down. And they demanded that all services stop until each person, along with the church itself, was registered with the government, said the shopkeeper, Guo.Without warning, Guo and his neighbours in China's Christian heartland province of Henan had found themselves on the front lines of an ambitious new effort by the officially atheist ruling Communist Party to dictate — and in some cases displace — the practice of faith in the country."I've always prayed for our country's leaders, for our country to get stronger," said Guo, who gave only his last name out of fear of government retribution. "They were never this severe before, not since I started going to church in the 80's. Why are they telling us to stop now?"Under President Xi Jinping, China's most powerful leader since Mao Zedong, believers are seeing their freedoms shrink dramatically even as the country undergoes a religious revival. Experts and activists say that as he consolidates his power, Xi is waging the most severe systematic suppression of Christianity in the country since religious freedom was written into the Chinese constitution in 1982.The crackdown on Christianity is part of a broader push by Xi to "Sinicize" all the nation's religions by infusing them with "Chinese characteristics" such as loyalty to the Communist Party. Islamic crescents and domes have been stripped from mosques, and a campaign launched to "re-educate" tens of thousands of Uighur Muslims. Tibetan children have been moved from Buddhist temples to schools and banned from religious activities during their summer holidays, state-run media report. This spring, a five-year plan to "Sinicize" Christianity in particular was introduced, along with new rules on religious affairs. Over the last several months, local governments across the country have shut down hundreds of private Christian "house churches." A statement last week from 47 in Beijing alone said they had faced "unprecedented" harassment since February.Authorities have also seized Bibles, while major e-commerce retailers and Taobao pulled them off their sites. Children and party members are banned from churches in some areas, and at least one township has encouraged Christians to replace posters of Jesus with portraits of Xi. Some Christians have resorted to holding services in secret.A dozen Chinese Protestants interviewed by the Associated Press described gatherings that were raided, interrogations and surveillance, and one pastor said hundreds of his congregants were questioned individually about their faith. Like Guo, the majority requested that their names be partly or fully withheld because they feared punishment from authorities. After reporters visited Henan in June, some interviewees said they were contacted by police or local officials who urged them not to discuss any new measures around Christianity. The party has long been wary of Christianity because of its affiliation with Western political values. Several Chinese human rights lawyers jailed for their work, including Jiang Tianyong and Li Heping, are outspoken Christians. So too are many Hong Kong pro-democracy activists, not least among them 2014 protest leader Joshua Wong."Chinese leaders have always been suspicious of the political challenge or threat that Christianity poses to the Communist regime," said Xi Lian, a scholar of Christianity in China at Duke University. "Under Xi, this fear of Western infiltration has intensified and gained a prominence that we haven't seen for a long time."___Guo, who keeps a small storefront selling ornate doors in a riverside district, once had eyesight so poor that he could not distinguish the sky from the earth. But after finding God at 27 years old, he made a seemingly miraculous recovery that he attributes to his faith. For decades, he, like many Christians in China, shuttled from one unregistered house church to another, where folding chairs served as pews and coffee tables as lecterns. Two years ago, he and 10 other Christians pooled their money to erect a permanent church on his property. They are part of what experts describe as a spiritual awakening in China. The number of Chinese believers of all faiths has doubled in two decades to an estimated 200 million, by official count, as the hold of the Communist party has weakened. Among them are an estimated 67 million Christians, including Catholics — a number that is expected to swell to become the world's largest Christian population in a matter of decades. This rapid growth has reinvigorated the party's longtime mission to domesticate a religion traditionally aligned with the West.Historians believe that Christianity was known to China as early as the seventh century, and was later propagated by Jesuit missionaries starting in the 1500s. In recent decades the religion has faced by turns heavy persecution and tacit acceptance.During the Cultural Revolution, when Mao sought to eradicate all religions, Christians were jailed, tortured and publicly humiliated. But they survived by operating covertly and grew steadily in number after Mao's death in 1976, when a populace disillusioned with the Communist Party began to seek moral guidance elsewhere.Chinese Christians say the Bible gives them a sense of right versus wrong and the strength to endure in a country where power often trumps justice. While China's rapid growth has brought prosperity to many, others despair at what they see as a deterioration of public morals. The deaths of children in scandals involving tainted infant formula and shoddily-built schools in recent years have led to the sense that modern China was in the midst of an ethical crisis."After the 'collapse' of communist ideology, no value system has been in place to fill the spiritual vacuum," said writer Zhang Lijia. "China has witnessed a religious revival in recent decades precisely because of this vacuum and relaxed control."Officials once largely tolerated the unregistered Protestant house churches that sprang up independent of the official Christian Council, clamping down on some while allowing others to grow. But this year they have taken a tougher approach that relies partly on "thought reform" — a phrase for political indoctrination. Last November, Christian residents of a rural township in southeast Jiangxi province were persuaded to replace posters of the cross and Jesus Christ inside their homes with portraits of Xi, a local official said."Through our thought reform, they've voluntarily done it," Qi Yan, a member of the township party committee, told the AP by phone. "The move is aimed at Christian families in poverty, and we educated them to believe in science and not in superstition, making them believe in the party."The poster campaign appears to symbolize what analysts see as the underlying force driving the change in the party's approach to religion: the ascendance of Xi."Xi is a closet Maoist — he is very anxious about thought control," said Willy Lam, a Chinese politics expert at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. "He definitely does not want people to be faithful members of the church, because then people would profess their allegiance to the church rather than to the party, or more exactly, to Xi himself."Various state and local officials declined repeated requests to comment. But in 2016, Xi explicitly warned against the perceived foreign threats tied to faith, telling a religion conference: "We must resolutely guard against overseas infiltrations via religious means." And in April, the religious affairs department published an article saying that churches must endorse the party's leadership as part of "Sinicization.""Only Sinicized churches can obtain God's love," the article stated. The government is even cracking down on Christians more aggressively through legal means. In March, a prominent Chinese house church leader with US permanent residency was sentenced to seven years in prison after he built Christian schools in Myanmar. And half a dozen Christians were sentenced last month to up to 13 years in jail for involvement in a "cult," according to U.S.-based Christian non-profit ChinaAid.The pressure has pushed several dozen pastors and their families to flee to the United States in recent years, ChinaAid says. The wife of one pastor under house arrest left for Midland, Texas about a year ago, after authorities warned that their children might have trouble getting an education in China. She said members of their church in China were barred from being baptized, and even a simple Christmas service was interrupted."The government says that we have religious freedom, but really there is no freedom at all," said the pastor's wife, who asked to remain anonymous for her husband's safety. "Many of our Christian brothers and sisters are upset and fearful."Those who resist pay the price. After Jin Mingri, a prominent pastor who leads Zion Church in Beijing, refused local authorities' request to install surveillance cameras inside his house church, police individually questioned hundreds of members of the 1,500-person congregation, he said. The congregants faced veiled threats, Jin said, and many were asked to sign a pledge promising to leave Zion, which the government agents called illegal, politically incorrect and a cult. Some people lost their jobs or were evicted from rented apartments because police intimidated their bosses and landlords. For 11 years, the church has been housed on one floor of an office building, but the property management informed Jin in May that they would have to move out at the end of the summer. Jin said the management admitted to being influenced by external "pressures.""A lot of our flock are terrified by the pressure that the government is putting on them," he said. "It's painful to think that in our own country's capital, we must pay so dearly just to practice our faith."__At the epicenter of the drive to control the Christian community in China is Henan, the cradle of Chinese civilization and the entry point for many of the earliest foreign missionaries. Today, the province is one of the most populous in the country and a key part of Xi's fight against poverty, as proclaimed by red banners across acres of peanut farms and oil fields.Around the time authorities ordered Guo's church to stop congregating in March, his district announced a crackdown on private Christian meeting spots. On a single Sunday morning, the announcement said, 700 religious banners were removed, 200 religious texts seized and 31 illegal Christian gathering places shut down. Officials went door-to-door stripping decorative scrolls bearing the cross from home entrances. In Zhengzhou, Henan's capital, all that is left of one house church is shattered glass, tangled wires and torn hymnbooks, strewn among the rubble of a knocked-down wall. Pegged to another wall is a single wooden cross, still intact. The church inside a commercial building had served about 100 believers for years. But in late January, nearly 60 officials from the local religion department and police station appeared without warning. Armed with electric saws, they demolished the church, confiscated Bibles and computers and held a handful of young worshippers — including a 14-year-old girl — at a police station for more than 10 hours, according to a church leader. The authorities called the church illegal. The church leader said they had brought documentation to the religion department three or four times in an attempt to formally register it, but never received a response. Now, they have ceased to congregate. The church leader prays that the government will change its mind."We support President Xi," he said. "All we ask for is a space for our faith."That space for Xu Shijuan, a 63-year-old Seventh-Day Adventist, was her living room, where she held house church gatherings for four years. She stopped in March, after a group of men led by a local official ordered her to disband the meeting of about two dozen elderly Christians."If you don't heed our orders, the next group to come will be law enforcement," he said, according to Xu. "They will use force to disband you."Xu readily complied. "The people have dispersed, but our faith has not," she told the AP at her home in Zhengzhou. "God's path cannot be blocked. The more you try to control it, the more it will grow."Even Protestant churches already registered with the state have not been spared greater restrictions. When reporters visited five such churches in Henan this June, all bore notices at their entrances stating that minors and party members were not allowed inside. A banner above one church door exhorted members to "implement the basic direction of the party's religious work." Another church erected a Chinese flag at the foot of its steps. Some congregations now sing the national anthem during services, according to a house church pastor named Liu. Another pastor said his government-approved church shut down its Sunday school and cancelled all activities for children after receiving orders in February.Across Henan, house churches that once hosted gatherings of hundreds have now sealed their doors and split into groups of no more than a handful. Services are announced last-minute and held in different locations each week, often under the cloak of darkness. For a time, Guo's church did the same. They avoided congregating on Sundays to escape authorities' notice. But the church members were scared, and the group dwindled to 30. Authorities appealed to Guo to help gather information on his fellow Christians. He was given a form, reviewed by the AP, which asked for churchgoers' names, educational background and addresses, as well as the length of time they had been faithful and whether they were baptized. The brick house was largely deserted this summer. Around the door frame, tattered red outlines remained of a scroll that once read "God's love is as deep as the sea."Inside, Guo has refused to remove the cross and other decorations, telling authorities they are within his private property.Among them, pinned to a wall in the nave, is a bright blue poster that quotes China's constitutional promise of religious freedom.__AP writer Brian Skoloff contributed to this report from Midland, Texas.__Follow Yanan Wang on Twitter at Wang, The Associated Press.

Russia warns of 'horrible' conflict if Georgia joins NATO-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV-August 8, 2018

MOSCOW (AP) — An attempt by NATO to incorporate the former Soviet republic of Georgia could trigger a new, "horrible" conflict, Russia's prime minister said Tuesday in a stern warning to the West marking 10 years since the Russia-Georgia war.Dmitry Medvedev said in an interview with the Kommersant daily broadcast by Russian state television that NATO's plans to eventually offer membership to Georgia are "absolutely irresponsible" and a "threat to peace."Medvedev was Russia's president during the August 2008 war, which erupted when Georgian troops tried unsuccessfully to regain control over the Moscow-backed breakaway province of South Ossetia and Russia sent troops that routed the Georgian military in five days of fighting. The Russian army was poised to advance on the Georgian capital, but Medvedev rolled it back, accepting a truce mediated by the European Union. After the war, Georgia entirely lost control of both South Ossetia and another separatist region, Abkhazia. Russia has strengthened its military presence in both regions and recognized them as independent states, but only a few countries have followed suit. The European Union on Tuesday reiterated its "firm support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders" and lamented the Russian military presence in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. In a show of support for Georgia, foreign ministers of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, and a Cabinet member from Ukraine, visited Tbilisi Tuesday, urging Russia to withdraw its troops from Abkhazia and South Ossetia. "Nowadays no country can change the borders of another country by force," said Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz.Russian-Georgian relations have improved since the war, but the issue of the breakaway regions remains, preventing the full normalization of ties.Medvedev warned that NATO's attempt to embrace Georgia could have catastrophic consequences."There is an unresolved territorial conflict ... and would they bring such a country into the military alliance?" he said. "Do they understand the possible implications? It could provoke a horrible conflict."Medvedev pointed to Moscow's recognition of independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and the Russian military bases there, saying that any attempt to change the status quo could lead to "extremely grave consequences." ''I hope that NATO's leadership will be smart enough not to take any steps in that direction," he said. The Russian prime minister described NATO's eastward expansion as a major security threat to Russia."Whatever our colleagues from the alliance may say, NATO countries see Russia as a potential enemy," he said. "We can't help getting worried when the circle around our country keeps narrowing as more and more countries join NATO. NATO's expansion clearly poses a threat to the Russian Federation."

Hamas official declare another ceasefire: 'The current round of fighting is over, calm depends on Israel'      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
After firing 180 rockets at Israel in 12 hrs a command center for the armed groups in the Gaza Strip says that the current round of fighting has ended, and that calm now depends on Israel. "The current escalation in Gaza has ended. The resistance responded to the enemy's crimes in Gaza. The continuation of calm in Gaza depends on the occupation's behavior," the command center says, according to Al-Jazeera. The official said the groups had been responding to crimes by Israel - a reference to the killing by mistake (on Tuesday) of two gunmen from the Hamas militant organisation. Even that heavy barrages of rockets contniued to be fired at Israeli communities, including Ashkelon, at the morning, the IDF response was very small and limited, targeting several empty targets, including 2 Hamas attack tunnels. The comment appears to be a Hamas attempt to restore calm after Israel appeared to be preparing for war. It is not immediately clear whether this signals a shift for Hamas after its massive rocket barrage on Israel since yesterday, or disagreement in the organization's leadership about how to proceed. ************************************************ Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah takes to Twitter to call on the international community "to take urgent and quick steps to stop the Israeli aggression on Gaza" ************************************************* The president of the Czech Republic, Milos Zeman, expresses support for Israel as rockets pounded Israeli communities and towns around the Gaza Strip.           Villafaña, Melano Return As Timbers Ready for Stretch Run      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
by Abe Asher

Craig Mitchelldyer/Portland Timbers

Gearing up for the stretch run of an enormously promising 2018 season, the Portland Timbers closed out the summer transfer window with a splash — sending Vytas to DC United, and bringing back of two of the men who were in the lineup when the club won MLS Cup 2015 in Columbus.

Lucas Melano's return was long-rumored. The Argentinian winger has been under contract with the Timbers even as he spent the last two seasons on loan in his home country, and, with a DP spot open, Portland is taking one more gamble on him.

Jorge Villafaña's return, however, came seemingly from nowhere. The best left back in club history, a US national-teamer and bulwark in that championship season, comes back to MLS after spending two-and-a-half years in Liga MX.

Villafaña's return is the biggest headline from a frantic 48 hours for the Timbers, and for good reason.

The Anaheim native was acquired as a secondary player in the Steve Zakuani trade from Chivas USA ahead of the 2014 season, and made a slow start to life in Portland. He didn't get on the field until late May, and then lost his place in the starting lineup in the summer, before reclaiming it heading into the fall.

From there, though, he took off like a comet. Villafaña would start 47 of the Timbers' next 48, getting better and better until, by the end of 2015, he was MLS's best left back — a tenacious, shutdown defender, excellent crosser, and occasional dead-ball specialist as reliable as anyone on that team.

No one played harder, and very few played better.

The high-point was his performance in MLS Cup, a display so dominant that his winger Ethan Finley — coming off a 12-goal, 13-assist career year — completed just six passes, lost four dribbles in the final third, and was substituted shortly after the hour mark.

Villafaña was sold to Santos Laguna for a fee around $1 million the week after that game, doubling his paycheck and joining one of Mexico's best teams.

His experience there was a mixed bag, but it did result in a championship and his finally breaking into the national team under Bruce Arena. He almost certainly would have been a starter this summer had the U.S. qualified for the World Cup in Russia.

The Timbers, meanwhile, never truly replaced him — and their bringing him back now makes all the sense in the world. He's an aggressive, attacking fullback, and he'll give the Timbers a wide threat from the left side of their 5-3-2 that more closely mirrors what Alvas Powell has provided on the right.

It's an awfully cruel break for Zarek Valentin, who has started every game for this team since mid-March and hardly put a foot wrong, but he was limited going forward by not playing on his natural side. With the Timbers so reliant on their fullbacks for offense, that was a concern. It's not anymore.

Valentin will now likely move to the bench, giving the Timbers cover at both fullback positions and Giovani Savarese a degree of flexibility if he wants to push any of the three players into midfield.

For $175,000 in allocation money, which is what the Timbers sent the LA Galaxy to move up to the top spot in the allocation order and seal his return, the Timbers are getting Villafaña on what is reportedly a three-and-a-half year deal. It's a steal.

Craig Mitchelldyer/Portland Timbers

Melano, meanwhile, is a much different story and a much different gamble.

His original final act in green and gold could not have been more different than Villafaña's: in the pivotal 2016 regular season finale in Vancouver, Melano missed an open goal from two yards in a performance so dreadful that it ended when he was lifted at halftime for... Jack Barmby.

Why bring him back now? There are a few reasons. First, the Timbers had a DP spot open after Fanendo Adi's move to Cincinnati, and with Melano's loan having expired at the end of the last Argentinian season, he was an obvious fit.

Secondly, though he certainly didn't light the world on fire, Melano showed flashes last season — appearing 26 across competitions for Estudiantes, scoring twice in the Copa Libertatdores and making enough an impression that the club was reportedly interested in bringing him back for another year.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the Timbers are giving their highly capable coach an interesting opportunity.

Melano is every bit the project that he was when he was first signed, and while he never improved under Caleb Porter, Savarese is a former striker and Spanish speaker with an obvious knack for connecting with his players. We'll see what he can make of him.

The good news is that Melano doesn't figure to walk into the starting lineup as he did when the Timbers bought him in the summer of 2015. He should instead be a viable attacking option off the bench for a team that is set up to play to his counter-attacking strengths.

That's the rationale for the signing. But expectations should be low. Melano was barely a soccer player when he left Portland — struggling well beyond what is forgivable with the game's most basic components from finishing to dribbling, refusing to contribute defensively, and frequently drifting out of games entirely.

Safe to say, all things even, the Timbers would be making better use of the DP spot if Adi was still in it. But the way the chips fell, it's Melano, just Villafaña's return meant the end of Vytas's time in Portland.

The Lithuanian had his moments here — he was effective going forward and certainly an upbeat, likable character — but he wasn't a good or consistent enough defender to dislodge Valentin after starting the season sidelined with a hamstring injury.

He will, however, play plenty in DC, for a competitive team that was in desperate need of a left back, and have the opportunity to salvage something from what has been an entirely frustrating year. It's a good move for all parties.

And so, with this final flurry, the Timbers' 2018 roster is set in stone. Villafaña's return, certainly, harkens back to former glories. We'll see if this group, now very much a mixture of old and new, can reproduce the magic of three years ago.

9 paid iPhone apps you can download for free on August 9th      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

We were too busy to round up yesterday's best paid iPhone and iPad apps on sale for free, so we did some extra digging on Thursday and came up with nine great new options. Just make sure you download them all as soon as you can because these sales could end at any time.

This post covers paid iPhone and iPad apps that have been made available for free for a limited time by their developers. BGR is not affiliated with any developers. There is no way to tell how long they will be free. These sales could end an hour from now or a week from now — obviously, the only thing we can guarantee is that they were free at the time this post was written. If you click on a link and see a price listed next to an app instead of the word “get,” it is no longer free. The sale has ended. If you download the app anyway, you will be charged by Apple. Subscribe to our feed to be notified as soon as these posts are published, and you’ll avoid missing the sales we cover.

YouTube flagging wars: warning on my video about White Supremacist serpent seed theorists      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Due to the video I posted about my book Cain as Serpent Seed of Satan, vol. IV, YouTube wrote me the following, “We believe in the principles of free speech, even when that speech is unpopular or potentially offensive to some viewers” about which I will say ROFL!!!
They followed up with:
“However, YouTube doesn't allow hate speech or content that promotes or incites violence. In some cases, flagged videos that do not clearly breach the Community Guidelines but whose content is potentially controversial or offensive may remain up, but with some features disabled.”

“Your video will be shown after a warning message. In addition, certain features such as comments, sharing, thumbs up, and suggested videos have been disabled. Your video is also ineligible for monetization.”

So no, you cannot even comment on the video with statements such as—oh, I don’t know—this video contains absolutely ZERO hate speech or content that promotes or incites violence.

They also blocked it in the following countries:
“Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Cyprus, Czechia, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Spain, Finland, France, United Kingdom, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Greece, Croatia, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Latvia, Martinique, Malta, New Caledonia, Netherlands, French Polynesia, Poland, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Portugal, Reunion, Romania, Sweden, Slovenia, Slovakia, French Southern Territories, Wallis and Futuna, Mayotte.”

“Jesus…was not a Jew but rather of
the white Adamic race)…Satan probably
appeared to Eve as a handsome white
god…the white race is a race of gods…”
—Willie Martin

Cain as Serpent Seed of Satan 4.jpg

Within my appeal, I wanted to write:
“Good day, please be aware that many people use your alter system in order to take down videos/channels they do not personally like. Also, when you rely on impersonal algorithms which flag videos based on key words, errors will occur that this is one such a case. I received a message that stated ‘YouTube doesn't allow hate speech or content that promotes or incites violence.’ There is absolutely zero promotion or incitation of violence in my video. In fact, the video is specifically against racism, White supremacism, etc. Thus, please remove the misplaced warning message. Moreover, it has been blocked in multiple countries so please remove this block.”

I wanted to but could not since the appeal section only allows a tweet sized sentence. In any case, I elucidated that the video contains no such thing.

In about one minute, the reply was:
“Thank you for submitting your video appeal to YouTube. After re-reviewing your video New book on White Supremacist who hold to the Cain as Serpent Seed of Satan theory, we've decided to leave the restrictions in place on your video.
Our commitment to you
We take your videos and the YouTube community feedback seriously. We provide all uploaders with an option to appeal any removal or restriction of their videos. When an appeal is submitted to us, we work quickly to review the content and take appropriate action, including restoring videos that have been mistakenly removed.”

So now, when you go to watch the video, you will first see:
“The following content has been identified by the YouTube community as inappropriate or offensive to some audiences” with the options of “Continue” or “Cancel” and within it, you will see:
“Certain features have been disabled for this video
In response to user reports, we have disabled some features, such as comments, sharing, and suggested videos, because this video contains content that may be inappropriate or offensive to some audiences.”

Once you appeal, you are basically simply cut off from contacting YouTube (unless you are some sort of high money earner which I am utterly not) so I found a way to tell Google that I had an issue:
“I am a Jew who made a video AGAINST White supremacist racism and now YT is attacking me by claiming that my video contains ‘hate speech or content that promotes or incites violence,’ they rejected my appeal and thus, leaving me no way to defend myself. I would ask how they sleep at night but I imagine that the answer is that they sleep on a gigantic pile of money.”

Yes, it would take—my oh, my—all of two mouse clicks away from YouTube to find out that I am a Jew.

But perhaps I am misreading the whole thing: the video may have been flagged by White supremacist racists who wanted to keep me from exposing their racism—but I will not hold my breath at this option.

A plea: I have to pay for server usage and have made all content on this website free and always will. I support my family on one income and do research, writing, videos, etc. as a hobby. If you can even spare $1.00 as a donation, please do so: it may not seem like much but if each person reading this would do so, even every now and then, it would add up and really, really help. Here is my donate page.

Due to robo-spaming, I had to close the comment sections. However, you can comment on my Facebook page and/or on my Google+ page. You can also use the “Share / Save” button below this post.
