Bruce Western, Professor of Sociology at Harvard University and Visiting Professor at Columbia University, joins us to discuss his new book, 'Homeward: Life in the Year After Prison'.

On today's show: Kris Kobach says voter fraud is a nationwide issue despite weak evidence, insists no proof is ever enough for liberals. An overview of the latest election results. "Right to work" goes down in Missouri.

Bruce Western joins us to discuss his book, 'Homeward: Life in the Year After Prison.' For this book, Western followed 122 formerly incarcerated people for one year after they were released from prison to see how they re-integrated into society, with a focus on employment and family relationships. He found most had been exposed to trauma and had high rates of mental and physical health problems. The factors for "recidivism" and the role played by addiction. The effect of social policy (or lack thereof) around healthcare, housing, and economic inequality.

On the fun half: "Working Girl": feminist classic or ode to capitalist patriarchy? Why you should vote for Bernie-endorsed candidate Randy Bryce in WI. Louie Gohmert lament that Americans want entitlements more than Space Force, blames Obama for privatizing NASA. Dyana in WA shares her experience with the for-profit carceral state. Chicago police use truck full of sneakers as "bait" for teen troublemakers. Fox News contributor asks how Trump could not tell a lie in interview with Mueller. Jessie Jane Duff says America needs to suffocate Iran. John Bolton wants to put "maximum pressure" on Iranian government via sanctions. A Jamaican caller on the damage Alex Jones does to black youth. NY Congressman Chris Collins indicted on insider trading charges.

Taking both 100m titles at European championships gives rise to talk of Britain overtaking Jamaica in sprinting stakes

After a golden night, an emboldened morning. Zharnel Hughes was still groggy-eyed after storming to European 100m gold – a lack of sleep rather than a celebratory blowout was to blame – but his vision of British sprinting’s future was delivered with startling clarity. “I think this is a golden generation,” he said. “A new breed.”

And then, after rattling off the names of Dina Asher-Smith, Reece Prescod and CJ Ujah – as well as Adam Gemili and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, who have qualified for tonight’s 200m final – Hughes made another extraordinary prediction.

The Ultimate Rich Kids Were the Children of Famous Explorers      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

When Cristóbal Colón/Christopher Columbus happened upon the New World, ripe for exploitation, he became a very wealthy man, although most of the riches went to the king of Spain for sponsoring the trip. But what happened afterward? Colón had two sons, Fernando and Diego, who inherited his wealth, but were they to inherit a portion of the lands their father "discovered," or a portion of what it produced, or just what Cristóbal left them when he died? The Spanish crown had passed to another generation as well, and Charles V did not see eye to eye with Colón's heirs.

While Fernando was spending money, Diego was trying to consolidate his family’s status as one of the most powerful families in the “New World,” with control over Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Cuba. Before his father’s first voyage, in 1492, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand had agreed that, if his quest succeeded, Cristóbal Colón would be entitled to 10 percent of the takings of his voyage, plus a bevy of titles. Every time Diego tried to claim what he thought he was owed, the crown fought back. When he died, his father’s legacy was still contested.

The monarchy’s legal case rested on the idea that it wasn’t Colón, but one of his ship’s captains, who had first discovered the Americas. Ultimately, Diego’s widow went into arbitration with the crown, and his son, Luis Colón de Toledo, came out with a title—Admiral of the Indies—control of Jamaica, an estate in Panama, and a 10,000-ducat annuity that was meant to last in perpetuity.

It was, perhaps, less than the Colón family thought they were owed and less than Cristóbal’s contract specified. But the Colón family came out ahead of other scions of conquistadors.

The Age of Exploration enriched quite a few European families, who had varying degrees of success dealing with the riches and legacy of their explorer fathers. Read the adventures of the descendants of Hernán Cortés (who had a son in the New World and a son in the Old World, and named them both Martin), Francisco Pizarro, and Cristóbal Colón at Atlas Obscura.

Marlon James Wins Man Booker Prize      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Marlon James has won this year's Man Booker literary award for his novel A Brief History of Seven Killings . James is the first Jamaican-born author to win the prestigious prize, which has only been open to writers outside the British Commonwealth for the past two years. The prize made headlines earlier this year when organizers announced a longlist that included five Americans , up from four last year. Two of them made the final list — Anne Tyler, for A Spool of Blue Thread , and bookmakers' favorite Hanya Yanagihara, for A Little Life — but the night belonged to James. A Brief History is based on a real-life assassination attempt on reggae star Bob Marley in 1976. Michael Wood, chair of the judging panel, called it the most exciting book on this year's list , but, he added, "It is not an easy read. It is a big book. There is some tough stuff and there is a lot of swearing but it is not a difficult book to approach." NPR reviewer Rosecrans Baldwin also warns readers to be prepared : .
Usain Bolt's gimmick tag will be hard to shake in A-League | Stephen Ganavas      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

The commercial benefits of the Jamaican’s arrival clearly outweigh doubts over his on-pitch ability

Usain Bolt in the A-League. It’s a fascinating prospect. An announcement from the Central Coast Mariners that the eight-time Olympic gold medallist would be joining the club on trial for an indefinite period of time sparked a global frenzy this week.

Bolt, after all, has never played a professional football match in his life, and it must be stressed – this is a trial. At this point, he is still not a contracted Mariners player and there is every chance he never will be. However, there is great potential for this to help further embed the club in the community, allowing young potential Mariners fans to see one of the world’s most famous and recognisable athletes donning a Mariners shirt. A training shirt, but a Mariners shirt nevertheless.

Jeff's Famous Jerky - Jamaican Jerk      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
jeffs famous jerky
Jeff's Famous Jerky recently released this new flavor, Jamaican Jerk. Based out of Mission Viejo, CA, Jeff's Famous Jerky is a brand owned by Jeff's Famous Foods, Inc.

The company started up in 2010 when Jeff Richards decided to make a business from his favorite snack food, jerky. Since the 1970s, Richards has been making his own jerky, getting better year after year, similar to like a 40-year old bourbon. Professionally, Richards has spent his career in the restaurant business and also coaches entrepreneurs through a consulting business.

This Jamaican Jerk variety is described as being made from, "authentic Jamaican Jerk Sauce and their famous Scotch Bonnet Pepper", going on to say that it's a limited edition flavor because its so difficult to import the Jamaican Jerk sauce.

Ingredients

Beef, brown sugar, soy sauce, worcestershire suace, jerk seasoning, rice vinegar, balsamic vinegar, cayenne pepper natural smoke flavoring, granulated garlic, granulated onion, cumin, fresh garlic, scotch bonnet pepper sauce

Review

The first flavor that hits right away is a strong sweet, followed by a light salt, and a heavy seasoning. The scotch bonnet pepper flavor comes in, along with a fair amount of heat. The chewing bursts out a tanginess along with a light fruity character, and the natural meat flavors towards the end. There's a lingering garlic and onion in the background.

For being marketed as as Jamaican style, with an emphasis on Scotch Bonnet peppers, this jerky really hits the mark. I do get that heavy seasoning blend that Jamaican style cuisine is known for, but I also get a fruity, tangy flavor that one expects from Caribbean cooking. The Scotch Bonnet peppers, which Jamaica is famous for, adds a noticeable punch to this jerky with its fruity flavor, but also a moderate level of heat. It's not a seething hot burn, but toned down for non-stop snacking purposes. It rates a "medium" on our heat scale (3/5).

Otherwise, the primary taste profile is a well-seasoned steak sauce, savory, with a fair amount of sweet, but also a good deal of fruity, tropical flavors. The flavor and heat of Scotch Bonnet peppers is laden over that, along with a lingering garlic and onion back flavor, and finally the natural meat flavors at the end.

The meat consistency is excellent. This is a semi-moist, and tender jerky cut from what appears to be beef brisket. The initial bite is soft yet meaty, and once chewed down it feels almost like filet-mignon cooked medium rare. I didn't find any stringiness or unchewable tissues.

Verdict

This Jamaican Jerk variety from Jeff's Famous Jerky goes all in with an explosion of flavors that hit all areas of the palate, just as you would expect form Jamaican style cuisine. It's has a lot of sweet, but also a lot of tangy, fruity flavors, and a good dose of spices and seasonings. It's also savory with its saucy marinade, and beefy with its tender, meaty chewing. Moreover, the rich flavor of Scotch Bonnet peppers comes through well in this and adds a moderate level of heat. But this isn't just a mish-mash of ingredients, it tastes like its crafted to lure you in with an initial sweet, slowly introduce the spices and marinade, then burst out the tangy, fruity and chile character. Jeff's Famous Jerky is known for its complex recipes and delicate balance of flavors, and has once against created a jerky that attacks all areas of the tongue like a Michelangelo at a Las Vegas buffet.

Rating: Best (5/5)

Peter Frew is one of a tiny number of people left in the United States who can — entirely on his own, using almost no machinery — make a classic bespoke suit. He can measure you, draw a pattern, cut the fabric and then hand-stitch a suit designed to fit your body perfectly. Frew spent more than a decade as an apprentice for a remarkable tailor in his native Jamaica. He now sells his suits for about $4,000. Since New York is filled with very rich people who see their suits as an essential uniform, Frew has all the orders he can handle. When I first heard about Frew and his remarkable skill, I thought: That guy must make a fortune. I was wrong. It turns out, all the orders he can handle is not that many orders. It takes him 75 hours to make just one suit. He makes about two suits a month. And after expenses — fine English wool costs a lot — Frew takes home less than $50,000 a year. That's not even enough for Frew to buy one of his own suits. In fact, Frew doesn't own a suit at all — he

I mean, Americans - I’m the largest American-owned brewery at 2 percent market share. We were paying 38-percent taxes and competing against people who were paying 20. And now we have a level playing field, and we’re going to kick their ass.

Dead fetus found in airplane toilet was left by pregnant teen, source says      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

NEW YORK -- New details are emerging about events surrounding a dead fetus that was found Tuesday morning in an airplane toilet at New York City's LaGuardia Airport. A law enforcement source told CBS New York the fetus was left on the plane by a teenager.

The New York Post, citing a law enforcement source, reports the teen suffered a miscarriage inside the plane's lavatory.

The law enforcement source said police investigating the case are looking at sisters from Brooklyn who were traveling from Jamaica through Charlotte, North Carolina, and on to LaGuardia Airport.

After the American Airlines plane landed Monday night in New York, one sister allegedly ran to a lavatory in the middle of the aircraft while the other sister waited outside the door, according to the law enforcement source.

A four-person crew from Airway Cleaners boarded the plane the next morning and found the fetus in the toilet.

The plane was parked by the American Airlines hangar — not at a gate — when the fetus was discovered.

Flight crew told the Port Authority Police Department about the young women in 32 A and B. Police learned their names and on a hunch called Kings County Hospital, where the teen was located. The sisters' mother had picked them up at the airport and took them straight to the hospital, the source said.

The young woman allegedly told investigators she'd been bleeding heavily for days. She also allegedly told police that while in the lavatory, she "pulled the baby out" and never heard it cry or breathe, the source said.

She claimed she didn't realize she was pregnant, the source said.

An autopsy is expected to determine if the child was born alive.

An American Airlines spokesman has called the situation "tragic and sensitive" and said they are "actively cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation."

The Leaders We Need Now      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

One of my favorite authors is Zadie Smith. She’s a mixed race British woman who grew up in a housing project in north London. I remember reading her debut novel White Teeth as a graduate student at Oxford 20 years ago and being deeply inspired by the music she heard in the multicultural mosaic of modern life.

She recently wrote an essay in The New York Review of Books about Brexit, an election in Britain that highlighted divides, revealed ruptures and sent shockwaves not unlike a recent election you might have heard about on this side of the Atlantic.

There’s a particular story she tells in that essay that I think says so much about where we are at now, and the complicated work we need to do moving forward. Zadie Smith is at the playground and her daughter is playing with the son of this white woman standing a few steps away. The woman is considerably younger than Zadie, although their children are about the same age. She speaks in an accent that signals membership in the broader social and ethnic class that voted for Brexit.

Zadie remembers a time when conversation would have come easily between them. In fact, friendships that cross boundaries is the overriding theme in many of her novels. Neither she nor this other person are antisocial, and the playground has plenty of racially mixed groups chattering away. And yet she can’t find words to share with this woman whose son her daughter appears to be enamored of.

The drama seemed to grow as they walk up the hill a few feet apart and still not talking, Zadie Smith watching this woman turn left into the housing project she grew up in, and feeling the woman’s eyes on her as she turned right into the new development of considerably nicer homes. The barrier between them felt like it had become an electric fence surrounded by armed guards – all of it invisible, all of it also feeling very real.

Several things struck me about this scene. One, Zadie Smith is not neutral on Brexit. It’s a vote, not unlike the vote here, with deep and painful impact on her friends and family. After the vote, a skinhead directs a fascist slogan at her Jamaican-born mother. A local shopkeeper says in her general direction, “I suppose you’ll all have to go home now.”

Two, she’d seen a stranger and somehow imagined a monster. The fact is she didn’t know who this woman was, or who she had voted for, or why. She had imagined a story about this white woman on the playground, and it was the tale of a villain.

Three, Zadie Smith was self-aware enough to wonder, What story is this woman imagining about me, as she hears my Oxbridge accent and watches me turn the lock in a big house? Am I somehow the villain of her story?

The ultimate tragedy for me is that Zadie Smith and this woman, they loved things in common. Matters in which they had a significant stake. A friendship between their children, the thriving of the playground on which that friendship was developing, a neighborhood, perhaps a school. Whatever else might have divided them, why were they unable to at least begin with the things they loved in common? Why do we these days imagine monsters when we meet strangers, and turn away?

For anybody who has read especially the early novels of Zadie Smith, it is a jarring realization. This is a writer whose imagination conjured the most optimistic visions of all identities of people, and combined them together in ways that made them better than they could have been alone. She herself is the product of a marital union precisely like that. But something about the poisoned social environment of post-Brexit Britain had deformed that imagination, and retarded even Zadie Smith’s superhuman gifts for conversation across boundaries.

For me, this scene says a lot about the times in which we live, the problems that we face and the work we need to do.

John Courtney Murray defines ‘civilization’ as “people living together and talking together.” Danielle Allen advances that definition by saying that a central act of citizenship in a diverse democracy is talking to strangers. She says that the goal of a nation like ours is not really oneness, which requires a homogeneity that is neither possible nor desirable. Instead, the goal is wholeness – the ability to have a sense of cohesion and coherence alongside our multiplicity. Michael Walzer defines it thus: “How are we, in the United States, to embrace our differences and maintain a common life.” Danielle Allen’s answer to this question is: when strangers are willing to build trust with one another, they have the chance to build a new wholeness, a society in which they can call one another citizen.

So what do we do when injustice is so clear that you can no longer stay silent? When a country is so divided that we feel like a nation under two flags? And when the atmosphere is so poisoned that talking to a person on the playground who has a child the same age as yours feels impossible?

It just so happens that as I was tying myself in knots defining the problem, Barack Obama shows up in South Africa and starts talking about Nelson Mandela.

One of the main themes of Obama’s speech was on Mandela’s willingness to work with people with whom he disagreed, even the ones who clearly oppressed him – his jailers. Mandela did things that I find superhuman. He learned the language of his jailers, Afrikaans, so he could understand them better. He met with them in private negotiations when he was in jail. When he was inaugurated President of South Africa, the person who held the keys to his prison cell was by his side.

For Obama, there is a deep spiritual wisdom in Mandela’s moves: “it was not just the subjugated, the oppressed who were being freed from the shackles of the past. The subjugator was being offered a gift, being given a chance to see in a new way, being given a chance to participate in the work of building a better world.”

The genius of Mandela was that he was able to speak about the problem of polarization in a way that didn’t paper over marginalization, and address the injustice of marginalization in a way that didn’t exacerbate polarization, and to do it all recognizing that there will always be legitimate disagreements between different groups in a diverse democracy.

He was able to paint a picture of a society where everybody thrived, and to get people to trust that he could play a role in leading them there. Aime Cesaire: “There is room for all of us at the rendezvous of victory.”

Michelle Obama said, When other people go low, we go high. Well, apartheid is the lowest low you can imagine, and Mandela’s actions the highest high. What he did reminds me of Edward Markham’s poem:

You drew a circle that drew me out

Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.

But love and I had the wit to win

We drew a circle that drew you in.

I do not for a second want you to think that I believe this is going to be easy. We have signed up for the hard work of being interfaith leaders in at a time in which large swaths of people have weaponized their identities and are wounding one another. It is enormously tempting in that situation to circle around your flag, burrow into your bunker, declare those outside your lines the enemy and fire away. My friends who work with young people who have been involved in violence tell me the line, “Hurt people, hurt people.” It is entirely natural.

And in a situation when hurt is all around, some group of people has to stand up and be healers.

Obama ends his speech on Mandela by reminding people of perhaps Mandela’s most remarkable quality - his hope. His belief that day after backbreaking day splitting limestone in the unforgiving heat on Robben Island - even when apartheid felt to so much of the world that it would last forever – that he was somehow part of bending the arc of the universe in the right direction.

Mandela felt a cosmic wind at his back. He knew that young people were gathering to push forward. That gave him hope. He heard the voices of people who believed in societies that gave everyone dignity – voices ranging from African tribal leaders to the Founding Fathers of the United States – calling him forward. That gave him hope too.

I believe he heard angels whispering in his ear.

I hope you hear those angels, too. In fact, they are all around us. There is the angel of Swami Vivekenanda who spoke at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in 1893, about the glory of nations that welcome all people and the righteousness of religion that builds bridges not barriers. There is the angel of Jane Addams, who imagines American democracy anew, welcomes the strangers of her time and sees in each one a contributing citizen. There is the angel of Abraham Lincoln, who says to a meeting of people in Chicago that America is not an ethno-state. It is not meant for one race or one religion. If you hold with the ideals of our founding documents, you are “blood of the blood, and flesh of the flesh” of the people who wrote them.

I leave you with the voice of one more angel, the great poet of the south side of Chicago, Gwendolyn Brooks:

SPEECH TO THE YOUNG SPEECH TO THE PROGRESS-TOWARD (AMONG THEM NORA AND HENRY III)

Gwendolyn Brooks

Say to them,
say to the down-keepers,
the sun-slappers,
the self-soilers,
the harmony-hushers,
"Even if you are not ready for day
it cannot always be night."
You will be right.
For that is the hard home-run.
Live not for battles won.
Live not for the-end-of-the-song.
Live in the along.

Caldwell to Host First 'Farm-to-Cork' Dinner in New Indian Creek Plaza      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
The four-course meal on Saturday, Aug. 18, will pair Scoria Vineyards wines with inventive dishes created by Chef Gordon Epperson of Gordon's Catering. Caldwell's Indian Creek Plaza has been open for less than a month, but Destination Caldwell is already putting it to good use as an event venue. Its latest brainchild is a series of "Farm-to-Cork" dinners spotlighting Caldwell wineries and a rotating cast of local chefs; guests to these upscale parties will sit family-style at a single table on the plaza, sipping wine in the summer sun. The first four-course meal on Saturday, Aug. 18, will pair Scoria Vineyards wines with inventive dishes created by Chef Gordon Epperson of Gordon's Catering. "We want to tap into those individuals who love and enjoy wine," said Melissa Nodzu, director of events for the plaza. "People who have never, or seldom ever, travelled to Caldwell. Ideally, we want to capture an audience within a 30- to 40-mile radius of the plaza; people who are looking for new experiences and are interested in learning more about the agricultural diversity of Canyon County." Epperson certainly plans to spotlight that diversity. His menu, drawn up after a tasting of four different wines from Scoria, has a hyper-local focus and breaks out of the usual appetizer-to-entree-to-dessert order mold.  "We don’t have to follow traditional lines when we do these tastings—the wines pretty much tell us what we can do," Epperson said, adding, "All of our dishes are invented just for this purpose." Epperson gave Boise Weekly a peak at the preliminary menu, which includes:  1) Dry Riesling Course: Almond, fig and date grilled cheese toasted ravioli. Golden apple, Zephyr squash and Thai basil slaw with fresh lime, honey-lemon-thyme vinaigrette. 2) Chardonnay Course: Greek lemon chicken with dill, capers, olives and lemongrass. Sweet mashers with cinnamon yam garnish and lemon preserves-infused olive oil drizzle. 3) Petit Verdot Course: Pork carnitas en mole with corn masa, toasted macadamia, glazed pepitas, pineapple sage and star anise Cotija. Dark chocolate sprinkle. 4) Malbec Course: Cherry balsamic glazed beef with Gorgonzola, Jamaican jerk-spice chimichurri and grilled garden squash. Cilantro-lime drizzle.   Dessert: Flying M coffee with a dark chocolate coconut macaroon. According to Destination Caldwell, ingredients for the dishes will be sourced from Justin Christensen Farms in Melba, Stewart Farms in Nampa, The Flying Pig Farm and Vogel Farms in Kuna, Lakeview Fruit in Caldwell, Wagner Farms in Meridian, True Roots Organics in Nyssa, Oregon, and Epperson's personal garden. While the Aug. 18 dinner won't be the first wine-related event on the plaza, it…

Abstract

You want this juicy, smoky chicken. You really do.

When I went to Jamaica, I found this place called Scotchies. It's this beautiful outdoor kitchen with pimento wood smoking. I fell in love the first time that I bit into that juicy, smoky, slow-cooked chicken leg. The aroma, the smokiness, the spice! I want to share that experience with you, but still make it my own. So here it is. I've made this very spicy, so I've used 3 scotch bonnets. Be warned. I like it spicy. You don't have to make it spicy. It's up to you.

Phor in Jamaica on Black Ink Crew: Chicago
Phor and Ryan reconnected last week on Black Ink Crew: Chicago when they were in Los Angeles and had a life-changing encounter with Nicki Minaj.  Phor is blowing up and has a big performance in Jamaica but hanging out with 9Mag is about to cause quite a few problems for the Loyal Ink crew, who see Ryan and company as the enemy now. Last week we saw Phor and Ryan head to Los Angeles. While Phor was feeling bad about the trip at first, a chance encounter with Nicki Minaj changed all of that pretty fast. We got to see […]

Economic reforms and T&T’s growth outlook      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Published:
Thursday, August 9, 2018

Only a few weeks ago, the IMF released a statement on T&T embracing the reforms undertaken by the twin-island sovereign in recent months. After two years of economic recession the IMF projects a return to growth in 2018.

While such a recession is to be expected in a country that is very dependent on its commodities—particularly gas reserves, in the case of T&T—the reforms could be a game changer. The rebound in commodity prices is certainly welcome news, but the progress towards fiscal consolidation and economic diversification is even more significant for the sustainability of the country’s long-term development.

According to the IMF, GDP contracted by 2.6 per cent in 2017, a marked improvement from the 6.1 per cent drop in 2016. While gas production rebounded in late 2017, oil output remained flat. The non-energy sectors also failed to provide respite from the oil and gas crisis, with construction and financial services largely idle due to delays in public projects and a foreign exchange shortage.

Regained optimism amid rebounding commodity prices and regulatory reform

The reforms have brought about improved fiscal performance and a brighter—albeit modest—medium-term economic outlook, which was reflected in our third Oxford Business Group Business Barometer: T&T CEO Survey.

Regulatory changes and the recovery of commodity prices have led local business leaders to adopt a more optimistic perspective. In fact, their forecasts for GDP growth far exceed those of the IMF: while the fund expects nearly flat growth of 0.25 per cent for 2018, 52 per cent of survey participants project expansion of up to 1 per cent for the year, and 15 per cent expect this figure to surpass 2 per cent.

Furthermore, 69 per cent have positive or very positive expectations of local business conditions in the coming 12 months.

This marks a considerable rise from the 57 per cent who had positive expectations in our survey released late last year, and it is a nearly four-fold increase on the 18 per cent figure recorded in our inaugural OBG Business Barometer in T&T two years ago, when the nation was in the midst of an economic crisis.

This wave of recovering optimism is a key factor motivating plans to make capital outlays, with 67 per cent of participants reporting that their company is likely or very likely to make a significant capital investment in the next 12 months

Tax environment remains competitive

In a recent interview with OBG, Christopher Lewis, president of InvesTT, the domestic investment promotion body, said that the relatively low cost of doing business in T&T makes it a particularly attractive investment destination.

“In spite of the recent increase in corporate taxation, with rates going up from 25 per cent to 30 per cent, the country is still very competitive when compared to other jurisdictions in the Americas or the Caribbean,” he said.

CEOs appear to agree, as a notable majority (64 per cent) find the tax environment to be competitive or very competitive on a global scale. This was only a slight decline from 67 per cent in last year’s survey.

Given the global trend of declining corporate tax rates, T&T’s 5 per cent increase is likely to weigh on global competitiveness. However, the government needs to prioritise fiscal strength over the global tax race for the time being.

Indeed, T&T’s focus is internal, but the trends of its Caribbean neighbours remain key to its economic performance.

Guyana is perceived to be the largest player by far influencing T&T’s interests, with 56 per cent of respondents naming it as the Caricom country with the most potential as an export and/or investment destination. This was followed by Jamaica, a distant second with 27 per cent, and Barbados with 9 per cent.

Shortage of soft skills

T&T is also facing a skills mismatch. As we see in many emerging markets where we conduct our CEO surveys, leadership (49 per cent) was cited as the skill in greatest need in the country, followed by customer service (29 per cent).

This indicates a greater perceived shortage of soft skills than that of science, technology, engineering and maths capabilities.

Persistent challenges to address for longer-term growth

With all this in mind, our outlook for T&T is cautiously optimistic: indicators have certainly taken a positive turn, but we must also understand the unique challenges facing the twin-island nation, including volatility in energy prices,v pending reforms, delayed public projects and a lack of soft skills.

Furthermore, to maximise growth potential, the government will need to promptly execute the tax reform and address the foreign exchange shortage. C-suite executives agree that these efforts will require consistent measures to diversify the economy and increase the competitiveness of non-energy sectors.

Investor sentiment improving

A sizeable majority of executives interviewed for the 2018 edition of the Business Barometer: T&T CEO Survey carried out by Oxford Business Group (OBG) had positive expectations for the coming 12 months, in a sign that the country’s fiscal consolidation efforts, assisted by rising commodity prices, are beginning to bear fruit.

As part of its survey on the T&T economy, the global research and consultancy firm asked more than 100 C-suite executives from across the country’s industries a wide-ranging series of questions on a face-to-face basis aimed at gauging business sentiment.

From the CEOs interviewed, 69 per cent felt either positive or very positive about local business conditions for the next 12 months, up from 57 per cent in OBG’s last survey, which was released in late 2017.

In answer to a separate question, 67 per cent of business leaders thought it likely or very likely that their company would make a significant capital investment within the same timeframe, compared to 60.7 per cent previously.

Respondents’ positive outlook may well be down in part to their largely favourable views on T&T’s tax environment and the relatively low cost of doing business in the country. Almost two-thirds (64 per cent) described the tax climate as competitive or very competitive on a global scale, despite a recent increase of 5 per cent in corporate taxation.

Business leaders were also confident that the economy would return to growth in 2018, following two years of recession, with more than half (52 per cent) of those surveyed expecting GDP to reach 1 per cewnt for the year, well above recent forecasts made by the IMF of 0.25 per cent.

This survey has been designed to assess business sentiment amongst business leaders (chief executives or equivalent) and their outlook for the next 12 months. Unlike many surveys, the OBG Business

Barometer is conducted by OBG staff on a face-to-face basis, across the full range of industries, company sizes and functional specialties. The results are anonymous.

OBG Business Barometer is based on data from companies with revenue within the following parameters, among others:

• 81 per cent of companies surveyed were private

• 25 per cent of companies surveyed were international

• 31 per cent of companies surveyed were regional

• 44 per cent5 of companies surveyed were local

The data generated allows for analysis of sentiment within an individual country, as well as regionally and globally. Additionally, comparisons can be drawn between both individual countries and regionally. The results are presented statistically within infographics and discussed in articles written by OBG managing editors.

BEING HIT BY LIGHTNING MULTIPLE TIMES AND OTHER ODD EVENTS      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

A friend of mine told me  her father had been hit by lightning numerous times yet lived to not only tell about them but was never seriously hurt. Her Dad also had lost time experiences and a strange confrontation with a blue orb during his lifetime. He lived through all of these experiences yet refused to find anything odd about them living instead in a secure denial that his encounters were strange at all!

Click here to enlarge top photo.

The mans family knew he was having experiences other people were not having but simply could not get the man to accept his situation . He would go to great lengths to find reasons why the things happening to him were perfectly normal .

The events in his life started when he was 15 years old. He was working on a construction barge located in the Atlantic Ocean during the 1930's. He was a water boy/ laborer on a work crew that was working on a project off of Long Beach New York.

The crew would be brought out by boat to a large floating barge where they would work until the end of the day when a boat would return to bring the workmen back to the dock at Long Beach on the coast of Long Island.

One work day the boy was late finishing his routine and the boat that returned the men to shore left early. The man , then a boy, became stranded on the barge. He was alone , he was 15 years old and a bit nervous knowing they would not send another boat out to the barge until morning.

He was able to take cover in a small cabin on the barge and knew he would have to make the best of the ordeal until the next day. He found a canvas and made a sleeping area inside the small cabin to stay until morning. That is all he remembers of his night alone on the barge. He recalls it was a clear night when he locked away in the small cabin but nothing more until he was being poked by the returning work crew early the next day.

When the work crew returned they found the boy half naked wearing only his work pants. He was confused and looked rather dazed. His shirt and jacket were found on the barge with his shoes. The clothes were burned and torn. His chest was bright red and he his hair smelled really bad, like sulfur. The returning work crew questioned the boy about  what had happened to him the night before. The only thing he could tell them was that he must have been hit by lightning . He thought he recalled a large bright light while laying in the cabin however he was not sure how he lost his clothes and shoes out on the barge while laying inside the cabin. The work crew looked around the barge for signs that he may have been hit by a lightning strike but found nothing usual besides the condition of the boy.

He recalled seeing a huge white flash the night before while laying on his make shift bed in the little cabin . That was all he could remember until the next day when   the men arrived to the barge and woke him up . His back and chest hurt like a slight sun burn where he seemed to have a light rash but that seemed to go away during the day.He remained dazed for the remainder of the day and complained of a headache. The men who worked on the barge found the entire scenario with the boy odd but blamed it  his behavior  on the fact he was 15 and did not think much more about it.

The man remembers feeling sick for about two weeks after the incident. His parents   blamed it on catching cold while being on the barge at night. The boy was convinced he had been hit by lightning even if it had been a clear night without any sign of a storm that night. Without a reasonable explanation or any interest by the adults around him the boys strange night on the barge was forgotten.

My friends father simply explains this strange night as the night he was first hit by lightning. Everyone who hears the story thinks it odd to be hit while under cover to the extent his clothes were knocked off . They also realize he may have removed them once hit and that he may have been in shock. The one fact everyone agrees on is that what happened on that barge to this man when he was 15 years old remains a   mystery.

My friends father continued to have odd events occur to him with a similar event happening when he was 21 years old in 1938. He was walking home alone late one night around midnight in Jamaica, Queens , New York along a quiet dark side street on a Saturday night in the summer. He recalls it was a clear lovely summers night . He had been out on a date and was on his way home from his girlfriends house when once again he saw a huge flash of pure light come at him. He recalls the light came from nowhere in a large arrow shaped ray . It hit him directly in his chest. He was lifted in to the air and then blacked out. When he woke up he found he was laying on the ground about a block away from where he had been when the flash of light hit him.  His shirt and pants were ripped and burned to the point he was nearly naked. His shoes were nowhere to be found. He had a terrible headache and red rash circling his entire neck completely around his head. His pocket watch was missing and his hair on one side of his head around his ear looked as if it had been shaved or burned to the point of looking like a crew cut on that side of his head.

He managed to find his way home barefoot and frightened. When he finally made it to his home he was stunned to find it was after 3 in the morning. He realized he must have been knocked out and laying on the ground for about three hours.

The next day the man and his two brothers went back to see if there were signs of a lightning strike and to look for his watch and shoes. They found no signs of lightning striking the area or any of his possessions.

The family was concerned as it had been a beautiful clear night that night making a lightning strike highly unlikely. The man was insistent that was what occurred and would not consider any other possibilities. He was not burned in any way . The only complaint he had was of a terrible headache that lasted about two weeks. His mother insisted that he see the family doctor. The doctor could not find any visible sign of being hit by lightning. The doctor also told the family that anything powerful enough to carry him a block away, destroy his clothes and knock him out for three hours would have left some type of marks or burns, or more likely would have killed him.The man insisted there was nothing funny going on and he has simply once again hit by stray lightning.

The man continued having other odd experiences during his life time although most of his life seemed normal and he seemed to be a level headed normal man. He married and had a family leading a ordinary life in most all ways.

Besides the strange lightning events the man encountered other odd happenings during his life.

He had a few lost time events that he would explain away as falling asleep while driving . If he was sleep driving it was an incredible feat as he would drive a few hundred miles sound asleep to find himself waking up in his car hours and miles away from his original destination. One odd event in this mans life was an encounter with what he referred to as ball lightning

This event occurred in the 1970's. The man and his wife were sitting in their backyard eating lunch at the large family wooden picnic table that sat under one of the yards big shade trees. The couple sat talking while enjoying their lunch when a ball of blue light the size of large truck tire entered the yard. At first the ball of light  hovered adjacent from the couple sitting at the picnic table on the opposite side of the yard. The couple sat in awe looking at this thing for a few seconds until it began to circle the yard.

The large orb of light circled the yard much like a ball swirls around inside of a roulette wheel. As it continued to circle the couple snapped to their senses and became frightened . The man told his wife to get under the big wooden picnic table as he felt they were too far away to make it to the house. He looked for something to defend them with and grabbed a yard shovel leaning against the tree. The man got a good grip on the shovel and steadied himself against the table ready to hack away at the light if it approached the table that now had his wife hiding underneath it.

He watched in amazement as this ball of bright neon blue light continued to circle the yard. He tried to figure out what it could be and once again came to the conclusion it was some type of odd ball lightning. The sky was crystal clear, there was not one cloud in the blue summer sky however he could not think of what else this thing could be. The ball of light began to slow its pace which gave the man hope it would soon dissipate or lose its energy and disappear.

Instead the ball slowed to a stop, hovered in the corner of the yard before changing direction to head straight at the man, his wife and that big old wooden picnic table. The man now knew something was really wrong as he never heard of lightning standing still or changing direction.

He leveled his balance to ready for a fight and held his shovel like a bat getting ready to swing as this blue ball of light hurdled towards him. He watched in horror making ready to swing as this thing aimed straight at him. He bent at the waist knowing his first swing better be a good one. The ball of light came at him and just before impact the man threw his body into the swing and hit the orb of light just before it was able to impact him . My friend's mother still under the table was shaking and crying as she watched this thing coming towards her husband. She watched him make ready and take his swing at the thing as it rushed at them . She heard the shovel make contact with the orb and heard a explosion accompanied by a large flash of blinding white blue light.

Her husband had smashed the orb of blue light as hard as he could hitting it dead center with the shovel. It exploded in a loud crack that hurt their ears. The thing broke apart into millions of blue sparks somewhat like a display of fireworks. The sparks flew all over the yard. The man pulled his wife from under the table to start a run towards the house. As they ran to the back door of their home they watched at the far end of their yard as this thing collected what looked like the tail of a comet . The pieces that were shattered all over the yard by the smack with the shovel were pulling together in what looked like a comet heading away from them and their yard

They watched as the thing took off in to the sky at an incredible speed until it was gone .

My friend talked to her father after this event and tried to convince him that something strange had been following him during his entire life with odd events and strange encounters that simply could not have been constant lightning strikes. My friends father passed away about ten years ago. My friend was never able to get her father to talk about these events without becoming upset and annoyed . The family felt it best not to press him on something he found so upsetting . The family knew something very odd was going on with their father but to this day have no idea what it could have been.

I talked about this man and his life experiences with a few people I thought may have some ideas what could have been causing his odd encounters.

One idea was that this man may have some extraordinary connection with the electricity around him or even the plasma in our universe. He may attract energy like a lightning rod. I was also asked if he was located near any electric poles or large transformers or high tension wire centers during his events? The answer was no.

Since he never seemed to suffer any obvious physical harm the idea any human could endure that many hits by lightning seemed somewhat impossible.

I questioned my friend concerning the locations of her father's events . She told me that the first one was in out in the Ocean on a barge so no wires were involved there. The other encounters were not near any type of high tension wires that she knew of.. The orb incident happened in the back of her parents home that was about 1000 feet away from the street where the normal residential utility poles are located.

I have no idea what was happening to this man. I have no clue why he had these strange things happen to him during his life. His experiences could have been caused by some type of abnormal relationship with energy . It is possible he was a rod for energy and attracted lightning. I would feel more comfortable considering that possibility if the events occurred when there was some sort of storm going on at the time they occurred. In the case of this man each event happened on beautiful clear days or nights. I understand that strange lightning can develop at any time and that he may have had a relationship to it that the rest of us do not have.

I have to admit that it has crossed my mind that this man was a victim of abduction during his life. The fact that he was never harmed by any encounter in a way people usually are during lightning strikes is odd. So is the fact he had his clothing blown off of him in the intensity of the hit. Of course the lost time involved in the man's experiences rings a loud alarm bell in my mind. I also find his lack of memory a fact that leans me towards abduction possibilities.

I know this man refused to believe any idea other than the one he came up with for his strange happenings. He really wanted to believe he was hit over and over during his life by lightning. Maybe he was. I have no idea what happened to him but do know you cannot fight lightning with a shovel or watch it hover and decide to change course to attack you!

I have to wonder how many other people out there have had similar events happen to them or a family member and go along thinking it was just a normal day with a little lightning hit along the way! How many others are out there who  are encountering the unknown with strange events and never mentioning it ?

It is obvious that many things happen out there that never are reported by people all over the world. I want to remind all of my readers to be careful out there and always pay attention to your surroundings. If you think something is wrong follow your instincts and protect yourself . You never know when it will be your day to pick up a shovel , or find a way to face off with something you find completely unknown!

Lastly I have to admit that I have lied about part of the story above but have decided to be completely honest about the strange events this man encountered. I know without question that the events I have just told you are absolutely true as the man in this story was not my friends father. The man was my father. My Dad, and he was a victim of the unknown this I know is true

Sprint star Bolt will have to 'impress' new Aussie soccer coach

DF-Xinhua Report

Sprint star Usain Bolt will have to "impress the coach" to be offered a playing contract with Australia's Central Coast Mariners Football Club, its chief executive officer Shaun Mielekamp said on Wednesday.

Following the club's announcement that the retired Jamaican sprinter and record-breaking Olympic gold medalist is starting his soccer training with it for "an indefinite training period", Mielekamp said in a press conference that Bolt's training program "will be structured to see if he can reach a level of playing that earns him a professional contract".

"This may take three weeks, three months, six months. Or it may take longer. Who knows. Only time will tell. But it's exciting to see what this will do for our region," said Mielekamp.

"There's a lot of hard work ahead and we're committed to building a team that will win matches and instil belief in our community. Hopefully Usain can help us on this mission," he said.

Bolt, 31, is expected to move to the club's base in New South Wales state's Central Coast area. His playing position will be "probably a question for the coach in future weeks as he gets to the ground and puts the boots on. Everyone knows he's fast, everyone knows he's big so there's some obvious positions that you would think of. l will leave that to the football department to guide us on that one," said Mielekamp.

"One thing that's really exciting for us and we are very aware of is what may the 'Bolt effect' look like for us in the future. If there are more players around the world that know our brand, know our club and know our region then that can only be a positive".

Jimmy Buffett only sang one overt children's song – "Caribbean Amphibian" for a Sesame Street special. Yet it lives in perpetuity on Kids Place Live, YouTube, and a host of other online venues. But if you enjoyed the gentle island feel of that tune, and wished, "What would a full album sound like," I've got the answer for you. The mega-named Purple Fox and the Heebie Jeebies and their second CD, THE SOMETHING OF LOVE.

Part jam band, part educational experience, and 24x7 fun, Purple Fox and company was imagined into reality by Josh Friedman in late 2014 in Silicon Valley. And you thought only software and sitcoms came from that region. THE SOMETHING OF LOVE is a theme album, with the title track harkening back to Fishbone's epic "Everyday Sunshine."

Other tracks amplify the central theme, with "We Got It (Our Time Together)," "Forever Everyday," "You're Welcome (In My House)," and the Jamaican-influenced "Please (I Don't Want to Harsh Your Mellow)":

Please, when you know what you want but you don't know what to say
Please, when you know what you need and you need it right away
Please, it's a magic word that just can't be replaced
Please, please

In my estimation, Purple Fox and the Heebie Jeebies will start some slow dancing gyrations with THE SOMETHING OF LOVE. It's an infectious combination of warm-hearted vocals and zydeco with biscuits. Friedman and his congregation invite your family to celebrate the fusing of family, friends, and good funk.

THE SOMETHING OF LOVE is available from Purple Fox and the Heebie Jeebies website, Amazon, Apple Music, CDBABY, and Soundcloud.

Here is the video for the band's song, "S'alright":

These are the 12 most dangerous areas for pedestrian, cyclist traffic accidents in NYC       Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Officials have been working to make New York City streets safer through the Vision Zero initiative, but we’re not quite totally free of traffic accidents just yet.

There are some areas that pedestrians and cyclists should be extra cautious around, according to Localize.city.

The data website identified the 12 most dangerous areas in New York City for traffic accidents in a new report out this week.

“This study looks at dangerous intersections from the perspective of residential buildings, pinpointing the buildings that are surrounded by intersections with the most crashes that injured or killed pedestrians and cyclists,” said Localize.city data scientist Israel Schwartz in an email. “The immediate area of these buildings were found to be the most dangerous based on the crash rates for each intersection.”

This doesn’t mean there’s one specific intersection with the most traffic accidents, but instead Localize.city identified “hot spots” or clusters that pose a greater risk to pedestrians and cyclists.

In these areas, pedestrians and cyclists are at a risk three times greater than elsewhere in New York City of being injured or killed in traffic accidents, per Localize.city.

Traffic accident fatalities have been dropping across New York City. The first half of 2018 was a record-low period for fatalities, according to the mayor’s office, and 2017 overall was the city’s safest year on record.

Since officials adopted Vision Zero in New York City in 2014, traffic fatalities have dropped 28 percent and pedestrian fatalities by 45 percent.

Localize.city praised the city’s work, and its data scientists hope their report can supplement that Vision Zero progress.

"We know how to prevent death and serious injury on our streets, and with this study, we also have a better understanding of where the city should target investments in safer street redesigns," said Paul Steely White, executive director of Transportation Alternatives, in a statement. "Traffic deaths are falling in New York thanks to the city's data-driven approach to street safety. Thanks to this critical research, we can further reduce the threat to pedestrians and bicyclists at the intersections where help is needed most.”

A New York City Department of Transportation spokesperson said that the department will review this Localize.City report. In the meantime, officials pointed to the city’s Vision Zero Borough Pedestrian Safety Action Plans for more information on how Vision Zero is addressing traffic accidents across the five boroughs.

TOTP 02/01/1986 Long and Peel - back together after a bit of a break. The first programme of the year and A-ha kick off proceedings with The Sun Always Shines On TV. A future No1. At the time I thought this was the reward for Take On Me. (first single better, but first single, so takes everyone a while to catch up, sells well, but over many weeks, doesn't make it to the top, second single comes out, everyone's up to speed, it makes No1, it's not so good) I don't know at what point I changed my mind on this. Take On Me is far better known and Sun probably a little forgotten. I have time for both but neither are among my favourite tracks by them. More on that later. Paul McCartney - Spies Like Us- Lucky to get on again, at its peak (13) this week. I like much of his output even when it's not rated, but this doesn't grab me at all. Over 30 years since he hit the top ten, solo. Level 42 -Leaving Me Now. It is a subtle end of relationship ballad. Nice backing vocals make it sound a bit Chicago. Peel takes the rise out of Mark King's jacket. Countdown. Bronski Beat at 11 with Hit That Perfect Beat. Right at the beginning he dances like Andy Bell always used to. Breakers Jennifer Rush - Ring of Ice, she has a distinctive voice but this is not really that memorable outside the chorus. Sting Russians- black and white video. From Dream Of The Blue Turtles. Our geography teacher used to like this album and bang on about it (and Hounds of Love). Both had been out a couple of years at the time, but I can't remember him talking about any other music at all. Sophia George- Girlie Girlie. Peel is a fan, but nothing special reggae for me. One hit wonder here, but a career back home in Jamaica. countdown 10-1 No videos so looks like they've ditched that format. Shakin Stevens- Merry Christmas Everyone - On video- a rare thing, and even more scarce, an outside video. Christmas jumpers, sleigh, snow ball fights, children, falling over, Roy Wood (actually Father Christmas) usual stuff. Werner Herzog not required. Out to "Wrap Her Up" Elton John. Not as poor as my memory of it. Which was poor. Not awful. In the 80's it was normally either big top ten hit, or a bit of a flop for Elton. This was neither. Not my favourite but there has been worse.
