The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) proposes to rule and invites public comment on the application for a release of approximately 9.34 acres of airport property at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), Honolulu, Hawaii from all federal obligations contained in the Quitclaim Deed, dated April 18, 2000, and Grant Assurances because the portion of land is not needed for airport purposes. The land requested to be released is located approximately one mile east of the airport completely separated by a lagoon and the Sand Island Access Road, a major public roadway. The release will allow the State of Hawaii (State) to transfer the property from the State Airports Division at fair market value to the State Highways and Harbors Divisions, thereby benefiting the Airport and serving the interest of civil aviation. The proposed use of the land after the transfer of jurisdiction will be compatible with the airport and will not interfere with the airport or its operation.

The New York Convention and Visitors Bureau, led by president Charles Gillett (1915-1995), re-popularized the term “Big Apple” with its advertising campaign in the 1970s. In May 1975, Gillett explained: “To jazz musicians, sports figures and show business people, there are many apples on the tree, but to play in New York City is to play The Big Apple.” The term “big apple” began to be popularized in the 1800s. “Big apples” won prizes at country fairs. “Bet a big apple” was a popular saying. “Big apples are top of the barrel” was an established phrase. John J. Fitz Gerald’s horseracing columns in the New York (NY) Morning Telegraph popularized “Big Apple” in the 1920s. However, this exact sentence construction, “there are many apples on the tree...,” does not appear cited in print before the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau used it in the 1970s. 11 May 1975, Honolulu (HI) Star-Bulletin & Advertiser, “Travel News Digest—Who planted the Big Apple?,” Travel sec., pg. 6, col. 6: “The term, The Big Apple, has its roots going back many years, in the entertainment and sports worlds,” Gillett says. “To jazz musicians, sports figures and show business people, there are many apples on the tree, but to play in New York City is to play The Big Apple.” 6 August 1975, The Jersey Journal (Jersey City, NJ), “The Voice of Broadway: All About a Big Apple” by Jack O’Brian, pg. 23, col. 1: (Spoken by Robert Preston Tisch, chairman of the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau.—ed.) “Today, more than ever, this is where the action is...this is the Big Time...this is Number One to jazz musicians, sports figures, and show business people, there are many apples on the tree, but to play in New York is to play The Big Apple. 7 December 1975, Boston (MA) Sunday Globe, “Let’s open up a can of worms” by Joseph F. Dineen Jr., pg. E4, col. 1: The New York Convention and Visitors Bureau explains that “the term, The Big Apple, has its roots going back many years, in the entertainment and sports worlds. To jazz musicians, sports figures and show business people, there are many apples on the tree but to play in New York City is to play ‘The Big Apple.’” 12 January 1978, Chicago (IL) Tribune, “Action Line,” sec. 3, pg. 1, col. 1: The Big Apple, as a term, has its roots in the jazz, the entertainment, the sports worlds. To musicians, sports figures, and show business people, the Big Apple meant that although there are many apples on the tree, to play New York City is to play the big time. 2 March 1978, Austin (TX) American-Statesman, L. M. Boyd column, pg. E6, col. 5: THE BIG APPLE Q. “How come New York City is called ‘The Big Apple’?” A. That goes back to the 1930’s. Seasoned Citizens will recall “The Big Apple” dance craze. A New York nightclub was so named, too. Somebody in print—Walter Winchell or Damon Runyan probably, exactly who is unknown—wrote, “Many apples on the tree, but NYC’s the place to be.” 5 July 1978, New York (NY) Times, “How the Big Apple Got Its Name” by Enid Nemy, pg C8, col. 6: Mr. Gillett says that the Big Apple originated some 50 years ago, when jazz musicians bounced around the country, playing one-night stands. They had, he says, a saying that “there are many apples on the tree, but to play New York City is the Big Time...The Big Apple.” 3 September 1988, Vancouver (BC) Sun, “Q & A,” pg. E3: Could you tell me why New York is called the Big Apple? - Katherine Nicholls, North Vancouver The familiar phrase dates back to the 1920s when entertainers - particularly jazz musicians - and people in the sports world started using it, says a spokesman with the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau. According to one theory, the phrase was lifted from the name of a dance. “There are many apples on the tree, but when you pick New York, you pick the Big Apple,” says one of the bureau’s brochures. New York (NY) Times December 6, 1995 Charles Gillett, 80, the Creator Of the ‘Big Apple’ Ad Campaign By JAMES BARRON Charles Gillett, who was credited with creating the Big Apple tourism campaign when he was president of the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau, died on Monday at his home in Great Neck, L.I. He was 80 and also lived in Palm Beach, Fla. (...) But perhaps his greatest success came with turning the term “Big Apple” into a tourist draw. A jazz fan, he remembered that musicians in the 1920’s and 30’s had an expression for playing the big time after gigs in one-horse towns: “There are many apples on the tree, but when you pick New York City, you pick the Big Apple.”
VIAGEM DE VERÃO 2018 EM DIRETO | VOLTA AO MUNDO - DIA 11 (V2.0)      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

    10:30 E ATERRÁMOS NO HAWAI ... E NO PASSADO!

    13:00 A ILHA TROPICAL

    18:00 A MÍTICA WAIKIKI

20:00 O SUNSET NO SKY BAR

    14:00 A SKY TOWER

WI-Sen: Tuesday's GOP primary is coming to an expensive and nasty conclusion with Solutions for Wisconsin, a group funded by conservative megadonor Richard Uihlein, spending $912,000 on another TV buy against state Sen. Leah Vukmir.

Their spot features a long clip of Vukmir saying of Trump, "he's offensive, but he's offensive to everyone. He's offensive to women, he's offensive to men," and she continues by saying he's offensive to "little people" and "fat people," and "everyone." It's actually kind of surprising we haven't seen a lot more of this clip in TV ads before the final week of the contest.

FL-Gov: Rep. Ron DeSantis is out with a poll from North Star Opinion Research giving him a 50-30 lead over state Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam ahead of the Aug. 28 GOP primary. Most polls show DeSantis, who is reminding voters every chance he gets that he's backed by Trump, well ahead of the former frontrunner.

MD-Gov: Democrat Ben Jealous is out with the first poll we've seen since he won the primary in late June, and the mid-June Garin-Hart-Yang survey finds him trailing GOP Gov. Larry Hogan 49-40.

The memo argues that, when respondents get positive and negative information about both candidates, Hogan's lead goes to just 47-45. However, the big problem for Jealous is that right now, the TV battle is very one-sided. Hogan and his allies at the RGA have spent the last month running ads portraying Jealous as too extreme and irresponsible to govern, while viewers aren't seeing many (if any) commercials hitting Hogan or praising the Democrat. It's not a good sign that Jealous is releasing a poll that shows him down by so much, but he may just feel that he needs to assure donors and outside groups he has a path to victory and is worth investing in.

However, the Laborers' International Union of North America announced Thursday that they were backing the Republican. Four years ago, LIUNA gave Democrat Anthony Brown a $500,000 loan in the final days of his unsuccessful campaign against Hogan.

Primary Day: The one that's past our bedtime: Hawaii goes to the polls Saturday for its party primary, and we've put together our preview here.

The big contest to watch will be Gov. David Ige's Democratic primary against Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, and its looking a whole lot more competitive than it did just a few months ago. While polls initially showed Ige down in the dumps, especially after January's false ballistic missile alert, two July surveys find the governor in the lead. However, Hanabusa's allies have spent heavily against the governor, and no one's sure how this contest will go. We also have a crowded Democratic primary to succeed Hanabusa in a safely blue Honolulu seat.

Polls close at 6 PM local time on Saturday, which is midnight eastern time. The first wave of results (known as printouts) usually come in an hour after polls closed, with additional waves coming hourly. We won't be liveblogging this one, but we'll be posting an open thread at Daily Kos Elections for anyone who wants to discuss the results as they come in.

MN-Gov: We have our first negative TV ad of the entire Democratic primary, with Attorney General Lori Swanson taking aim at Rep. Tim Walz just days before Tuesday's contest. Her 15-second spot argues that Walz has been missing too many votes in Congress while campaigning, including a vote to stop higher premiums for pre-existing conditions.

    Thursday, Aug 9, 2018 · 6:41:58 PM +00:00 · Jeff Singer

VT-Gov: GOP Gov. Phil Scott has looked secure as he seeks a second two-year term, but his allies at the RGA are still lending him a hand. The committee has already transferred $1 million to A Stronger Vermont, a PAC supporting Scott. The group has already spent $216,000 on ads, leaving them with a $855,000 war chest.

Scott faces an underfunded primary challenge next week from grocer Keith Stern. While Scott should have little trouble winning, he may need to worry about an underwhelming performance. Scott, who has always portrayed himself as a moderate, signed a bill to tighten gun restrictions in April over loud conservative objections, and it may have done him some damage with the base. Morning Consult’s poll of the second quarter of 2018 gave Scott just a 47-42 approval rating, with only 41 percent of Republicans giving him the thumbs up compared to 61 percent of Democrats.

If Scott wins on Tuesday with little trouble, this race probably won’t attract much more attention, but if there’s a strong vote for Stern, national Democrats may become a lot more interested.
