The Michigan All-Numbers Team: Defense Seth August 7th, 2018 at 1:22 PM

Previously:

This week: We continue picking the best number for each position with the defensive side. Offense is here.

Rules: It's what you wore when you contributed there. Starts, stats, big plays, etc.

All photos from priceless resource UM Bentley Library unless stated otherwise. All-Americans highlighted.

-----------------------------------------

A Short History of Defensive Positions

My goal so this wouldn't just be some useless offseason #content was to include all players since they started having numbers in the '20s. That way it's not just "here's the guys we remember from the last 10 years."

That makes defense WAY harder to do this (correctly) than for offense. Great two-way players are best known for their offensive feats and were typically listed with their offensive positions, for example Benny Friedman played quarterback on offense but halfback (cornerback) on defense. Defensive positions have changed dramatically over the years, and what you call a thing often takes another generation to change after the job has changed (for a taste, watch this 1940s defensive tutorial).

image

From the '30s to the '60s centers, fullbacks and one of the guards played linebacker. One safety played in the parking lot to deter quick punts because offenses would take a 50-yard field position swing over possession any day.

Transition periods are good for new position names and player nicknames—we're going through one now with Viper—but tough on roster data. Exempli gratia: the starter data list Dominic Tedesco and John Anderson as defensive ends in 1976. In 1977 they were both starters again but now at "outside linebacker."

No, Michigan didn't "switch" that year from a 5-2 defense to a 3-4. They just fixed the glitch. This gets especially troublesome when you consider how often shifts put 3-4 "tackles" on the edge. I mean, they called Mark Messner a tackle his whole career, even though he spent that career aligned up like so:

#60 at the bottom

Since the jobs haven't changed nearly as much as the names, I'm going to do defense by job description.

[After THE JUMP: The numbers.]

------------------------------------------------------

Nose Tackle (Down Guard, Middle Guard, Nose Guard) #96

Will Carr, Ryan Glasgow, Bob Kolesar as an underclassman

image

[Right: Upchurch]

My new rules made this hard: a lot of HM options and no clear winner. The top three were especially close: Martin and Glasgow were very similar players, and Carr was better than Bo's early '70s starter Greg Ellis, but #68 has (the better years of) a Seven-Oaks post, and 96 includes a guy from when I was at school that we try not to talk about. And I wanted to go with 54 because one should take every opportunity to mention Donnie Warner, since Michigan had a non-scumbag, non-loser, non-bench player who was the same size as Rudy with a tougher life story starting on a better defense because Warner was friggin' Sherlock Holmes at knowing offensive linemen tells.

Ultimately I nodded toward the more recent two because we can still talk about the 1940s star who wore this number as a sophomore. Bob "The Maulin' Medical Man" Kolesar was the backside guard (with Julius Franks the frontside) and played on or off the line depending of if Michigan was in its 6-2 or 5-3 alignment. However he only did that for a few games in 1940 before switching to #68. He would later try to stay in med school while enlisted in the U.S. Army and technically on the Detroit Lions. He also kicked off a legacy: Bob's distant cousin Bill played tackle for Michigan in the '50s, Bill's son John Kolesar, a receiver, played with Harbaugh. John's son Caden is a 2019 DB/ATH at St. Ed's with mostly MAC offers who might end up at Northwestern.

Nex let's talk about Will Carr, an All-American in 1996 who can only be googled by including the words "Jason Horn." Carr can take credit for some of that, as Horn wracked up 11 sacks and 18 TFLs in '95 with Carr sucking up doubles. He also lined up at fullback some, though he tended to fumble when he had the ball. Fortunately he lost control after he broke the plane on this one.

image

And Ryan Glasgow was the best of the Glasgows. Remember when about this time one year there were practice reports that Glasgow was ahead of Ondre Pipkins? Larry Harrison was a planetoid starter until he was kicked off the team for creepiness.

#68: Mike Martin (2009-'11), Greg Ellis (1971-'72), and Robert Kolesar (1941-'42). FYI 1947-'48 star OG Stu Wilkins played linebacker on defense when Crisler wasn't inventing the platoon system to get him off the field)
#54: Steve Graves (1976-'77), Donnie Warner (1973), Ernest Pederson Jr. (1936)

All backups no starters number:
#61: Alex Callahan (1957-'58), (Donald Dugger 1951, '53), Lloyd Henevald (1948-'49), John Gallagher (1943), Stanley Broadnax (1965), Nate Rodgers (1983-'84)

Enough of these:
#93 is the jersey they give planetoids who don't pan out: Alex Ofili, Jason Kates, Marques Slocum, Ray Edmonds, Erik Knuth, Jason Ptak, and Ron Kocan—they all share Ofili's single start.

Bring it back:
#65: It had a great run after Dominic Tomasi then went to backups in the '70s and disappeared thereafter.

Defensive Tackle (DT, 3T, 3-4 DE, 4-3 under 5T) #11

Francis Wistert, Albert Wistert, Alvin Wistert

image

So 60 has Messner, and Buster Stanley. 97 has Hutch and a pair of decent early 2000s DTs. 77 has two All-Americans, one of whom goes by "Sheriff" because prior to playing for Michigan Milan Lazetich was the sheriff of his Montana town.

But we have to talk about the Wisterts, who mic-dropped their retired number for this position before we even got to the second half of the 20th century. The Wisterts would be the Hughes family if all three played for Michigan (Jack after 10 years of doing manual labor). Except it was football, and they all played both ways in three different eras: Francis for Kipke, Albert for Crisler, and Alvin for Oosterbaan. All three were All-Americans. All three are members of the College Football Hall of Fame. Between them they have four national championships.

Francis "Whitey" Wistert was the eldest of five children of Lithuanian immigrants—their father was a police officer killed in the line of duty when Whitey was 15. At 6'2"/210 he was big for his era, a star on the offensive line. In an era of misdirection on misdirection Whitey defensively was particularly hard to fool. Third brother Albert "Ox" Wistert was the most talented and second to play for Michigan. His line play was cited as the reason Michigan beat Notre Dame in '42, a game that was only slightly less important than the War. Second bro Alvin "Moose" Wistert was the third to come to Michigan, the largest of the three, and the least likely to end up a Michigan football star. Moose dropped out of high school worked in a factory until WWII, when he served in the Marines. He took the GI bill to Boston University at Age 30 then transferred to Michigan. He was the defensive star of the championship '47 and '48 teams, and captain of the '49 team, at 33.

Other contenders:
#72 Robert Wahl, Jim Orwing (1955-'57), Bill Pritula ('46-'48), James Balog (1952-'53), Clement Bauman (1944), John Yanz (1963-'64)
#60: Mark Messner, Buster Stanley, Grant Bowman
#97 Chris Hutchinson, Shawn Lazarus, Will Johnson, Jeff Perlinger, Chris Ziemann
#68: Albert Wistert for a year, Stu Wilkins, Gregory Ellis
#75 : Bill Yearby, Bruce Hilkene, Richard Williams, Ralph Stribe, Doug Troszak, William Kolesar
#76: Trent Zenkewicz, Tom Johnson, Ed Meads, Jon Schopf, Mike Leoni, Ralph Kohl, Charles Ruzicka
#61: Alex Callahan, Don Dugger, John Marcum, John Gallagher, Lloyd Heneveld, Nate Rogers
#90: Ninef Aghakhan, Norman Heuer, Michael Keller, Juaquin Feazell, Chris Godfrey, Vinny DeFelice

Enough of these:
So much of recent history had Greg Mattison or Brady Hoke coaching the DL and they're really good at finding and developing this kind of guy. Plus, like, do you want a number nobody's worn since 1969 (74?). All numbers are open for DTs.

Bring it back:
#91: Josh Williams had 34 starts, only two other tackles have worn it.
#39: Henry Hill, Edwin Poorman Will Heininger. Everyone who wore it started.
#80: Alan Branch is all alone.
#11: Surely we can find a dollop of Wistertian blood today to be worthy of unretiring this. Cross with some Glasgow genes and let's goooooo!

-----------------------------------------------

Defensive End/Edge: #56

LaMarr Woodley (2003-'06), James Hall (1997-'99), Bill Hewitt (1929-'31), Edgar Madsen (1924)

image

This is a weird position grouping: I included all work done as a 4-3 defensive end (4-3 under 5-techs went with the DTs) all the way out to 3-4 OLBs, so we're including weakside ends, SAMs, and all of those 5-2 Oklahoma ends from the '60s and '70s. Basically guys expected to pass rush and hold the edge of the line.

I think when I announced I was doing this people figured #56 would take this position because of Woodley and Hall. Once glance below at the competition should tell you that wouldn't have cut it. The number nearly disappeared when budding star sophomore end Edgar Madsen suddenly died of pneumonia in 1924:

image

…and the Daily suggested his number be retired.

What did put them over the top was Bill Hewitt, an NFL hall of famer, whose number 56 was retired by the Chicago Bears when he left as the last NFL player to refuse to wear a helmet. He played end and fullback for Michigan and was the MVP of the '31 team that had Maynard Morrison, Charles Bernard, Harry Newman, Ted Petoskey, and a Wistert on it.

After Hewitt, reserve end Chester Stabovitz (name team!) then 1937-'38 starter Vincent Valek wore it.

James Hall burst into opponents' backfields by earning a starting job as a true sophomore in 1997. As with Woodley, they'd call Hall an "RLB" as the weakside end of Michigan's base 4-3 Under; Hall went on to a productive NFL career as an undersized yet unblockable edge rusher. As for Woodley, here's an insane and grainy video that includes videogame clips until Wolverine Historian makes us a better one:

Other contenders:
#86 John Anderson (1975-'77), Martin Davis (1990-'92), Gene Knutson (1952-'53), Gary Prahst (1957-'58), Oswald Clark (1948-'50), Bob Brown (1962), Steve Thibert (1985-'87) Donald Eeaton (1972-'73)
#47: Bennie Oosterbaan, Jake Ryan
#81: Glen Steele (1994-'97) the half of the time they weren't in an under, Dan Jilek (1974-'75), Mike Rotunno (1954-'55), John Halstead (1958-'59), Gene Topp (1951-'53), John Henderson (1963), Bob Boshoven (1957)
#99: Robert Thompson (1979-'82), Dominic Tedesco (1975-'77), Pierre Woods (2002-'05), Jake Frysinger (2001)
#88: Elmer Madar (1942-'46), Craig Roh (2009-'12), Harry Allis (1948-'50) Ron Kocan (1962), Bill Freehan (1960), Bob Rennebohm (1943)
#91: Matt Dyson (1991-'93), Tom Seabron (1976-'78), Walt Williamson (1971-'73), Rondell Biggs (2004-'06), Phil Seymour (1970), David Ray (1950-'51)
#55: Brandon Graham (2006-'09), Dale Keitz (1977-'78), Jibreel Black (2010-'11), Rasheed Simmons (1994-'96), and bits from Gannon Dudlar, Dhani Jones and Cecil Pryor
#90: Tim Jamison (2007-'08), Jake Ryan (2011), Michael Keller (1969), Juaquin Feazell (1996-'98)
#6: Paul Goebel as a junior (1921—he wore #1 in his All-American year), Victor Hobson (1999-2002), David Bowens (1995-'96), Prescott Burgess (played SAM in 2005)

Enough of these:
#95: That one Alain Kashama game is carrying this alone. Whiffs including Patrick Kratus, Chris Rock and Bob Rosema
#93: Three starts by soph and jr Mike Lemirade in the '80s are the contributions from 20 seasons of edge guys wearing this, most recently Chris Rodgers and Lawrence Marshall (who'll contribute at DT this year if he ever does)

Bring it back:
#6: The four guys above are the only edge players to wear it, and single digits are cool.

-----------------------------------------------

Middle Linebacker: #37

Jarrett Irons (1993-'96), Erick Anderson (1988-'91), Tony Rio (1957-'59), Tom Kee (1972), Chris Graham (2005-'07), Zach Kaufman (2000-'03), Mel Anthony (1963), and Jake Ryan as a redshirting freshman

image

I'm sorry, but if you were expecting another number to stand for Michigan middle linebackers you shouldn't have sent a guy born in 1979 to make the picks. I'm all about the doom squirrel archetype that Larry Foote and Ian Gold pioneered after, but there was something about a thumpin' neck-rolled bad-ass screaming up the middle and ending a guy that shaped my early understanding for good defense, and that's all thanks to Mr. Anderson and Mr. Irons. Anderson doesn't have a highlight reel but start The Game of 1991 at 12:00 and start counting how often 37 is around the ball.

With Anderson still fresh in memory, Irons came up, and starting tackling everything in sight. He was named captain his junior year in 1995 and by the end of 1996 he led Michigan in career tackles. I might have written in my high school paper that Sam Sword should switch to 37 in '97 since 93 is a weird number for a linebacker.

Here are all the MLBs, WLBs, plus fullbacks (the original linebackers), centers (the original middle linebackers), and a handful of 5-3 era right guards. Tony Rio, who also played some offense but let Gene Sisinyak take most of those snaps, lost most of his junior year in '58 for leading gambling ring. Rio pled to a misdemeanor and came back to captain the '59 team, when his famous luck led to a nine fumble recoveries.

Mel Anthony switched to full-time offense in 1963 when the NCAA eased the 1952 platooning restrictions but he was a good linebacker before that. Tom Kee was a 2nd team All-American to both the AP and UPI in 1972 playing weakside linebacker in Bo's 5-2 defense that gave up just 57 points all year and would have finished unbeaten but for a legendary referee jobbing in Columbus.

More recently we've had Chris Graham, who is not related to Brandon and should definitely not be lined up on a slot receiver, but was a decent and longtime starter. Zach Kaufman too was rather unheralded for mostly okay play, but his reputation was salvaged by the drop-off in WLB play after he was injured in 2002.

Other contenders:
#48: President Gerald R. Ford (1932-'34), Desmond Morgan (2012-'14), Jack Weisenburger (1946-'47), Dave Dobreff (1990-'93)
#33 Mike Taylor (1970-'71), Don Lund (1942-'44), Carl Russ (1973-'74), Wayne Sparkman (1962-'63), Tom Peterson (1947-'48), James Byers (1957), Marrell Evans (2008)
#57: Maynard Morrison (1929-'31), Tim Anderson (1983-'84), James Dickey (1958), Chris Singletary (1997-'98)
#53: Dick O'Shaughnessy (1951-'53), Jerry Goebel (1955-'57), Mel Owens (1977-'79), Thomas Cecchini (1963-'65), Robert Erben (1948-'49)
#2: Jack Blott (1923), Ernie Vick (1921), Cedric Smith (1915-'16), and future M coach Elton Wieman (1917)

Enough of these:
#51: With respect to Jerry Smith, lately this has been Eric Brackins, Max Pollack, Michael Ferns, and walk-ons. Shoulda stopped at John Duerr

Bring it back:
#93. The other positions aren't doing anything with it, and Sword!

-----------------------------------------------

Safeties & Hybrids: #25

Tom Curtis (1967-'69), Ernest Shazor (2002-'04), Dymonte Thomas (2014-'16)

image

[Right: Fuller]

This position has given me trouble every edition of this series because of the long safety drought in the 2000s. The great old ones weren't a lot of help either because they often stashed some fast guy who couldn't hit back there to prevent the offense from punting when it wasn't their turn (this was a problem until the 1960s). Around the time Bo arrived teams began moving their fullback into a position very similar to the Viper in Don Brown's defense, and Bo changed the term to "Wolfman". Eventually the wolfman or whatever other cool name you could come up with became the strong safety. I counted those and modern Vipers.

Choosing a number was tough: the leaders all have two All-American seasons plus a decent player then a drop-off. For #3 I told myself I would count Marlin's cornerback work there—his year at safety was good but injured after six games. But Tripp Welborne had two A-A seasons in A-squared and Stevie Brown was good as a senior at Spur—Shonte Peoples played on some good defenses but I mostly recall him getting beat. I had another out with #35, with two great safeties from Bo's early years. But Chuck Winters as 3rd guy over Dymonte or even Stevie? Nuh.

So let's finally acknowledge Mr. Ernest Shazor's Thorpe season, which gets dogged for being too hitty and not enough coveragey but it was majorly hitty. And 'twas that hitty that saved the season:

Let's also acknowledge that Tom Curtis is probably the best safety in Michigan history (Dave Brown '72-'74 is the competition). Arriving as a quarterback Curtis moved to safety before his sophomore season and started 8 games as a sophomore, setting Michigan's single-game INT record with three against Illinois—he had 7 that year. He wasn't done, picking off 10 balls in '68, and 8 more in 1969. Never actually that fast, Curtis nevertheless dominated by reading the offense. His 25 interceptions in the pre-let's-pass-a-lot era remain a school record.

Dymonte Thomas was good, never exceptional, splitting time at strong safety with Delano Hill in 2015 then starting at free safety for the even better 2016 defense after a few underclass years when we wondered if he might be moved to receiver. Dymonte was the best at corralling slippery dudes in open space, a useful skill in a Big Ten era with Saquon Barkley, Ezekiel Elliott, J.T. Barrett, Curtis Samuel, Akrum Wadley, Lorenzo Harrison and Ty Johnson in it.

Other contenders:
#3: Tripp Welborne (1988-'90), Marlin Jackson (part of 2003), Shonte Peoples (1992-'93), Stevie Brown (2007-'09), Marvin Robinson (2010-'12)
#35: Don Dufek (1973-'75), Tom Darden (1969-'71), Chuck Winters (1993-'95), Dieter Haren (1984)
#17: Dwight (1975-'77) and Ivan (1984-'86) Hicks, Otis Williams (1990-'91), Clarence Thompson (1993), Deollo Anderson (1992)
#14: Tony Gant (1983-'86), Frank Gusich (1970-'71), Josh Metellus (2017), Josh Furman (2013)
#41: Randy Logan (1971-'72) and Tommy Hendricks (1997-'99)
#49: Rich Volk (1964-'66), Chuch Ortmann (1950), Bob Ptaceck (1958)

Enough of these:
#19: Willis Barringer is the only 19 to start, and he only started so much (17 games!) because of Angry Michigan Safety-Hating God.

Bring it back:
#85: Michigan was later than most schools to go to a pair of safeties after offenses began using split ends as receivers in the early 1950s because Lowell Perry, one of those fancy new receivers himself, could cover ground like a modern NFL free safety.

-----------------------------------------------

Cornerback: #3

Marlin Jackson (2002, '04), John Maulbetsch (1915-'16), Todd Howard (1999-'02), Marion Body (1980-'82)

image

The other reason I didn't use 3 above because we've got three All-American seasons from two guys, and a lot of starts from the backup cast. Historically halfbacks played something closer to what a safety does today—it wasn't until the 1960s that platoon football created a need for guys who can cover a crazy receiving target on his own.

We'll start with the guy you haven't met a bunch of times, because he's more local. John "Maulie" Maulbetsch grew up in Ann Arbor (Pioneer), but transferred to Michigan at 21 after a year at Adrian College, where Maulie beat up on Yost's freshman squad. Yost called him "Another Willie Heston" which would be like someone using the Barry Sanders tag today. In his first year playing for Michigan Malbetsch was nicknamed the "German Bullet" or the "Human Bullet" because dude was known to scream down from his halfback (think of a Cover 2 safety) position into whatever gap was being tried. He won national notoriety by nearly beating Harvard singlehandedly in 1914 (his All-American season), and was blamed for Harvard canceling the rematch in Ann Arbor in 1915. They needn't have bothered: Maulbetsch was out with appendicitis that year and came back not quite himself. But he recovered to captain the 1916 team. Tiny even for his day he was nicknamed the "Featherweight Fullback" as a pro, and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Michigan gives out the John Maulbetsch Award to their favorite freshman every year. That has a nickname too.

The 2002 recipient of the Maulbetsch Award was Marlin Jackson, who switched to Maulie the Human Bullet German Bullet Featherweight Fullback Another Willie Heston's number after his (Marlin's) freshman season. That freshman season was promising but didn't say anything about an All-American sophomore performance, when he wracked up PBUs and tackles. In 2003 Marlin tried to solve that nagging free safety problem himself, then turned down the NFL for another All-American senior season when he did as much as Braylon to send a freshman-quarterbacked team to the Rose Bowl. Marlin's 2002 game against Washington star receiver Reggie Williams is one of the greatest single-game performances in Michigan history. Marlin is also well known to this here site because he went on to found the Fight For Life Foundation, a super-modern, model youth services charity that we'd believe in strongly even if it wasn't created by one of the greatest players in Michigan football history.

I didn't leave much room to talk about Todd Howard, who's joined us for a number of events, mostly in Chicago, since he now coaches in his native(ish*) Bolingbrook. In his playing days Todd was the short cornerback we complained about less because James Whitley was a bigger issue, but spoiled as we were by Woodson, we couldn't appreciate a solid undersized guy who could tackle. Howard would start 34 games for Michigan from 1999-'01, when he played opposite Mr. Jackson above.

* (Todd grew in Southfield, same grade, different elementaries, just across Telegraph from me, but we both moved away before middle school)

We were too young to remember Marion Body who was recruited by Jack Harbaugh and ended up being coached by Harbaugh's replacement Lloyd Carr. Body was inserted as the fist dimeback in the history of football in 1980 as part of Michigan's plan to stop Purdue's potent shotgun passing attack; Body collected one of four interceptions thrown that day by up-to-then Heisman frontrunner Mark Herrmann. Body also picked off two against Notre Dame that year, but is best known for getting called for pass interference to set up ND's winning kick. He started most of '81 and '82 at cornerback, but they learned to stay away from Body's field side after '80. Or the dance he did after they stuffed Illinois:

Other contenders:
#18: Bump Elliott (1947), Jim Pickens (1975-'76), Blake Countess (2011-'13), Leo Koceski (1948-'49), Ralph Chubb (1946), James Rogers (2010)
#16: Mike Jolly (1977-'79), Paul White (1941-'43, '46), Fred Julian (1957-'59), Ed Shannon (1954-'56), Ralph Chubb (1944), Willie Heston, Jr. (1930)
#22: Ty Law (1992-'94), Lance Dottin (1989-'91), Jim Bolden (1975-'76), Glenn Doughty (1969-'70), David Long (2017-?), Gerald White (1984)
#30: Bradley Cochran (1983-'85), Andre Weathers (1997-'98), Markus Curry (2002-'04)
#14: Morgan Trent (2005-'08), Harry Kipke (1921), Dick Sygar (1963-' 64), Don Oldham (1951-'52), Mike Shatusky (1957), Gary McNitt (1960), and Dick "Pick" Vick …sorry, sorry, growing up now (1923)

Enough of these:
#5: James "Future Star of the XFL" Whitley, Courtney Avery, Coleman Wallace who played as turned around as his name, and Charles Stewart. As long as we count Peppers at safety (I do).

Bring it back:
#46: Used to be a big number for Michigan halfbacks.

-----------------------------------------------

Special Teams: #19

Remy Hamilton Mike Gillette, Bob Bergeron, Carl Ward, Ronald Bellamy

image

Three of Michigan's greatest kickers all wore the same number so I had to go with this one over 6, but check out 6 after.

Bob Bergeron was the tiny guy with a huge leg. A walk-on, Bergeron held plackekicking duties for 1983 and '84, going 28/32, earning one all-conference decision and, that Iowa game, and a pizza. After Bergeron Mike Gilette, an all-state quarterback with MAC offers to play under center, took the same number and became the leading scorer in Michigan history thanks to 53 FGs, 130 XPs, and that touchdown—also his 56-yarder is the longest by a Michigan kicker. Gillette was also a strong punter, averaging 40 yards as the team's punter in 1988. Remy Hamilton, who kicked from 1993 to 1996, holds most of the volume Michigan records: five in game, 30 in a season, 63 in a career, 82 attempts. His 4-4 performance vs Notre Dame in 1994 is among the best outings for a Michigan kicker, even if he couldn't tackle Mike Miller.

Carl Ward was a backup running back and all-around offensive weapon who helped Michigan get back to the Rose Bowl in 1964. Naturally he was the kick returner for 1964-'66 (more on the punt returner in a moment). Ron Bellamy was Michigan's primary punt returner in 2000, averaging 11 yards per return though he only ever broke one long (against Rice). He was also a fixture on kickoff and punt units since he got down the field faster than anyone else on the team.

Other contenders:

#6: KR Tyrone Wheatley, PK Ali Haji-Sheikh, PR David Brown (3 punt return TDs from 1972-'74), PK Peter Elezovic, KOS Troy Nienberg (2001-'02, also wore 10)
#3: Ross Ryan, Robert Wood (1973-'76), Brandon Kornblue (1996-'97), Marlin Jackson (his only punt return was the Wisconsin TD), Tripp Welbourne, Quinn Nordin, Brad Robbins
#1: Six return TDs between Derrick Alexander (4) and Anthony Carter (2)
#38: Garrett Rivas (2003-'06), JD Carlson (1989-'91), Erik Lovell (1993-'94), Jason Vinson (1995-'98)

Enough of these:

#34: Since Brabbs it's been Gingell, the scholarship guy who was so bad it doomed the Rodriguez years to walk-ons, and Gibbons, who was a good kicker who should have been removed from the team his redshirt season. There's also Justin Fargas who couldn't catch a kickoff. Retire it for Brabbs.

Bring it back:

#12: For now (Chris Evans be comin'), the last player to wear #12 at Michigan for an entire career remains cornerback/gunner Brandon Williams (1999-'02), who collected that muffed punt return against Wisconsin and delightfully didn't know he couldn't run it in. B-Will, one of the fastest players in Michigan history, is probably the best gunner we've ever had. George Hoey wore it in the mid-'60s and averaged 17 yards per punt return in 31 returns, with 1 TD. Peppers, for reference, averaged 13.1 yards, and Derrick Alexander was at 12.7 despite 4 TDs. Blake O'Neill had that bad thing but until then it was the best game by a punter in Michigan history. Also in '89 there was a kicker named Gulam Khan, which is just a perfect setup for a kicker at a nerd school. More 12's on special teams.

The All-Numbers Team

  • QB: #7, for Leach, Henson, Henne
  • RB: #42, Boles, Billy Taylor, Wally Teninga
  • FB: #33, Hoard, Don Lund, Peterson, Russ Davis, Hurley, Sparkman Byers, Dave Fisher, et al
  • TE: #88, Butt, Mandich, McGee, Freehan, Harry Allis, Massaquoi, Dunaway, Madar, Campbell, others
  • WR: #1, Duh. If anything I underrated McMurtry and I'm sorry.
  • OT: #77, Not as duh as you might think but Long, Lewan, Jansen, Art Walker, Lazetich, Trezelle, Pape, & Newsome
  • OG: #65, Kurt Becker, Reggie McKenzie, Omameh, Henige, others
  • C: #59: Lilja plus Dworsky, Momsen, Balourdos
  • NT: #96: Will Carr, Ryan Glasgow
  • DT: #11: The Wisterts
  • DE/Edge: #56: Woodley, Hall, Hewitt, Madsen
  • LB: #37: Irons, Anderson, Rio, Kee, others
  • S: #25: Tom Curtis, Shazor, Dymonte

Nope. You need more than one dude there or else this is just a silly "Let's name the best player at each position" exercise and thus boring. The only corners or halfbacks (in the single platoon era) to wear 2 were Woodson and one year of Blake Countess that wasn't his best year. JT Turner rode pine.

When does 2 get retired? Howards was given a legends patch in 2011 (20 years after his college career ended). Althought the official retirement came in 2015 with the end of the legends program.

Coming up on 21 years since Woodson.

Pelatih Liverpool Soroti Peran Henderson Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

Liputan6.com, Liverpool - Pelatih Liverpool Jurgen Klopp menekankan krusialnya peran kapten Jordan Henderson.

Meski Emre Can meninggalkan Anfield, The Reds masih memiliki Georginio Wijnaldum dan James Milner untuk mengisi lini tengah. Belum lagi jika Adam Lallana dan Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain kembali fit.

Meski stok melimpah, Klopp menilai posisi Henderson tetap penting. "Dia juga manusia yang baik dan pemimpin berkualitas," ujar Klopp.

"Setiap tim membutuhkan sosok seperti Henderson untuk menciptakan semangat dalam tim," sambungnya, dilansir situs resmi Liverpool.

Henderson tiba di Liverpool pada 2011. Dia diproyeksikan sebagai pengganti Steven Gerrard. Kini berusia 28 tahun, posisinya di tim semakin signifikan.

Musim lalu Henderson menunjukkannya ketika Liverpool menembus final Liga Champions. "Henderson bisa memainkan semua tugas di lini tengah. Lagipula, saya tidak mau hanya menetapkan satu line-up. Setiap pemain punya fungsi masing-masing," ungkap Klopp.

I think of English usage as one of those subjects like cocktails or the British royal family. A lot of people take a passing interest in it but you never know who's going to turn out to be a true believer — the kind of person who complains about the grammar errors on restaurant menus. "Waiter, there's a split infinitive in my soup!" For single-minded devotion to grammatical rectitude, you'd be hard-pressed to match a Wikipedia editor named Bryan Henderson, who goes by the user name of Giraffedata. He was the subject of a piece by Andrew McMillan on the long-form site Medium that provoked a lot of debate . Giraffedata has a single bee in his bonnet, the phrase "comprised of." He has written a 6,000-word essay on his Wikipedia user page explaining why he thinks it's an egregious error. And to drive home his point, he has made 47,000 edits over the last eight years, most of them aimed at purging the phrase wherever it occurs on the Wikipedia site. He doesn't show it any mercy even when it

From 20 July to 21 September, Sotheby’s S│2 London is presenting two solo exhibitions: one dedicated to Japanese artist, Tsuyoshi Maekawa, in gallery one, and the other to British sculptor, Ewen Henderson in gallery two. Whilst working in completely different geographical and cultural spheres, Maekawa and Henderson’s practices sought to experiment with materiality and pioneer new processes of abstraction. The S│2 exhibition of Tsuyoshi Maekawa focuses primarily on the artist’s work following the dissolution of the Gutai Art Association, of which Maekawa had been a member. Ewen Henderson’s investigation into the alchemic potentials of clay, or as he called it ‘fluxed earth’, necessitates a fresh reading and re-contextualisation of his position within the history of sculpture. Born in Osaka, Maekawa joined the Gutai Art Association in 1962 and, under the tutelage of Jiro Yoshihara, experimente

Comment on Can the Packers Win The Super Bowl? by cz Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
i could not agree more with PackerFan4Life, as usual. While the Packers have made lits of good offseason moves, the need more depth on o-line and lb, and we still have McCarthy to overlook the obvious, as he did with Capers, and to show unwarranted loyalty to the players he likes, who usually are not studs, like Rollins and Hundley. As for fullbacks, which McCarthy loves, he never got the production from Kuhn or gets it from Ripkowski, the way Holmgren got out of stud William Henderson. So why keep non-playmakers in valuable roster spots. Ask the good ole boys club of McCarthy, Murphy and Ted Thompson. Yes, we still have Ted. And if Rodgers hadnt been hurt, we would still have Capers. Now McCarthy, has back Davon House and Tramon Williams because draft and develop is not possible with McCarthys coaching. 3 More years for grooming Hundley to get another 38-0 loss at Lambeau I expect. We are better this yr due to Gute moves, but better also will be Bears, Vikes and Lions. Eagles won SB because their backup QB Foles, 3 good RBs, and a great D effort. I like our RBs, but backup QB Hundley needs to develop, if he can, elsewhere, and Pettine needs more time to settle in. When the ship finally sank last season, Packers let the crew all perish and gave the dam captain a new ship and crew. Name another street after our dumbest, fattest coach.

RANDLE'S ROSWELL REPORT Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
http://www.alienresistance.org/roswell-ufo-crash-site-photos/

Kevin Randle, a full-time writer of more than 100 books of fiction and nonfiction, over 15 books about UFOs (was also an Army helicopter pilot and Air Force intelligence officer, including a Ph.D. in psychology), speaks about his investigation into the infamous crash of an alleged alien aircraft on a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico about July 2, 1947.

The book has chronologies of events that Randle discovered over the years, including interviews with witnesses that were still alive during his research. Consequently, Randle begins to discover a number of discrepancies to the popular “spaceship crash” theory. Likewise, Randle cannot completely ignore the testimony of various witnesses and documents that, if authentic, would mean a cover-up of sorts existed concerning the July, 1947 “crash.”

Dr. Kevin D. Randle (born 1949), is a prominent ufologist. Within the UFO community he is often regarded as one of the preeminent experts on the reported crash of a UFO near Roswell, New Mexico in July 1947.

A professional writer with more than 80 books to his credit, Randle is perhaps best known for his books about UFOs and the Roswell story. While the vast majority of his books are science fiction and historical fiction, it’s his books on the alleged UFO crash at Roswell, New Mexico in 1947 that have exerted an enormous influence on those interested in the saga

(Roswell Revisited, Kevin Randle, Ph.D., Glade Press, Inc., P.O. Box 460, Lakeville, Minnesota 55044-0460, www.galdepress.com, 2007, 176 pages, $12.95.)

“On the pro side there is little documentation, but solid eyewitness testimony. These were the men who should have known about the crash based on who they were,” says Randle. “Many of them, when interviewed, did confirm they knew and even suggested an extraterrestrial explanation. There is limited documentation, but there is some…and there is the reacting to something extraordinary…this lack of information about what was happening at the top of the military pyramid is not surprising.” (pp. 174-175.)

EARLY WITNESSES

Some of the early comments of witnesses somehow attached to the Roswell UFO incident can also be divided into “against, for, or undecided” categories.

Major Jesse Marcel, the Air Intelligence Officer at the Roswell Army Field, was ordered by Colonel William Blanchard to investigate a “debris field” discovered by ranch foreman Mack Brazel on a ranch near Corona, New Mexico. Marcel took along counter-intelligence corps officer Captain Sheridan Cavitt. Brazel’s discovery seemed to be around July 2 to 5, 1947; however, Brazel told the Roswell Dailey Record the discovery had been in June, 1947.

Randle constructs a list of witnesses and their opinions as to what they saw. Erdmann summarized a few; the reader can search further in Randle’s book.

The combination of biologically inspired technology, engineering and IT could allow 'morphing wing' aircraft to be developed, offering huge operational benefits, improved efficiencies and enhanced safety performance.

A concept design illustration developed by NASA during its 'Morphing Project'; the core goal was to identify enabling technologies but this model famously caught the public eye in 2001.

http://www.airforce-technology.com/features/feature91197/feature91197-1.html.

# Mack Brazel: “Rubber strips, tin foil, a rather tough paper and sticks.” “…a bundle about three feet long and seven or eight inches thick, while the rubber made a bundle about 18 or 20 inches long and about eight inches thick…” “…I am sure what I found was not any weather observation balloon.”

(Erdmann theorized that this description may have been due to military intimidation during Brazel’s so-called ‘arrest.’ There was, also, possible confusion of his ‘find’ of a genuine balloon crash earlier in June, 1947.)

# Technical Sargent Ernest Robert Robbins, according to his wife Anne, was a participant in the recovery of a “saucer-shaped (craft) and that was a top layer that was oblong and had windows in it…three people…one was dead and two were alive.”

# Master Sargent Lewis Rickett, on a visit to the crash site, handled “a light weight piece of metal that was slightly curved and about eighteen inches long…feather light and may be flimsy…he could not bend it.”

# Sargent Thomas Gonzales, a member of the Transportation Section, was asked to assist in the “sweep” of the 1947 crash site. He said he witnessed an “air foil” and “little men.”

# A “Sargent Johnson” was a member of the 1395th MP Company, and took about a dozen soldiers to the crash site. The craft appeared to be about fourteen feet in diameter, very light, and shared four creatures, three were dead. Johnson was told that the bodies were taken to the Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio.

(Discrepancies existed as to how many crash victims were found, and how many were alive or dead, and when the deaths happened.)

# Major Jesse Marcel described the material as being as thin as “newsprint,” yet so strong that a sledge hammer couldn’t dent it. There were small I-beams. “…it could not have been part of an aircraft, not part of any kind of weather balloon or experimental balloon…was not part of an aircraft, not a missile or rocket.”

# Colonel William Blanchard was the commander of the 509th Bomb Group at the Roswell Army Airfield in July, 1947. It was Blanchard that directed Lieutenant Walter Haut, the Publicity Information Officer, to release a press release on July 8 that “flying saucer” wreckage had been recovered and sent to higher headquarters.

Randle tells of some of the officers who defended the claim but also some who debunked the story of a 1947 alien craft.

PRO

# Colonel Thomas Dubois, Chief of Staff of the Eighth Air Force, said that orders had come down from the Strategic Air Command headquarters and Major General McMullen “that the officers were not to talk about this among themselves.” In August 1990, DuBois said: "Nobody, wife, me, with Ramey, with anyone.”

# Joe Briley, operations officer for the 509th, told Randle that in July 1947 he was a squadron commander at that time, and he did know that Blanchard had gone out to the crash site. Briley said that most stories were “changed and hushed up immediately as soon as the people from Washington arrived.” Briley said that Blanchard, who had been a close friend, “was not stupid enough to call a weather balloon something else.”

# Patrick Saunders was the base adjutant and member of the primary staff on the Roswell Air Field in July 1947. Saunders wrote on the first page of the book The Truth about the UFO Crash at Roswell: “Here’s the truth and I still haven’t told anybody anything!” Saunders told close friends that officers of the 509th Group were “confronted with a technology greater than that of Earth.”

# Edwin Easley was the Provost Marshal at the Roswell Army Airfield in July 1947, responsible for security and police functions. Easley usually avoided conversation on the topic by saying it was classified and that “he had confirmed” in February 1991 that Mack Brazel had “been held at the guest house on the base.” (Brazel referred to this as ‘jail.’) “If you are not allowed to leave and there is a guard on the door, it is, basically, the same thing,” says Randle.

When questioned if the craft was of extraterrestrial origin, Easley said: “Let me put it this way. That’s not the wrong path.”

# Former 1st Lieutenant Chester Barton was told by Easley to go out to the crash site. “…the remains of a crashed aircraft…military police were using Geiger counters and that they did detect some radiation in certain spots,” says Randle, “…weren’t any large pieces.” Barton said: “I know it was a hush-hush deal and Easley told us to keep our mouths shut.”

# Oliver “Pappy” Henderson flew some of the wreckage on to Wright Field. Henderson told his wife, Sappho, that he had seen the bodies of the crash victims: “These were drawings of small creatures with big heads and large eyes,” says Randle. “Slender creatures that seemed to be frail.”

# Lloyd Thompson and Robert Slusher were part of the crew that flew the bodies out of Roswell on a B-29 to Fort Worth where they were met by six people. One person was an undertaker, Lieutenant Felix Martucci, who has fervidly refused to comment to date.

CON

Some testimony raised questions about the authenticity and connections to the 1947 crash.

# Lieutenant Colonel Robert Barrowclough was an executive officer that said (during various interviews) that he was one of the pilots who flew the strange metallic debris out of Roswell. Robert Porter and other members of the 509th Bomb Group suggested that Barrowclough had flown with Major Marcel on the July 8 trip to Fort Worth as Aircraft Commander.

Records showed, however, that Barrowclough was on leave. Morning Reports show that Barrowclough returned from leave on July 9: he was not there to take the July 8 flight.

# Martin Jorgans claimed to be a civilian working for the military in 1947 in search of drone jet aircraft that crashed near Roswell on July 3. They discovered a craft with “stubby…curved-back wings…about twenty feet long and only 12 to 14 feet wide.” There were three reported creatures.

However, “there are no records to corroborate this,” (unfortunately) says Randle, “…using radar to track it is also a worry, given the nature of the terrain and the locations of the various radars in 1947…the search probably would have been conducted by aircraft and not guys in a jeep.”

# Counter-intelligence corps officer, then Captain Sheridan Cavitt (who accompanied Jesse Marcel to the “debris field”) told Colonel Richard Weaver that “he (Cavitt) knew immediately that it was a balloon.” Captain Weaver was the author of the July, 1994 23-page “Report of the Air Force Research Regarding the Roswell Incident.”

# Bessie Brazel Schrieber, the daughter of Mack Brazel, said that she, and her brother Vernon, helped pick up debris into four burlap sacks. Bessie recalled the material as nothing but pieces of a balloon (there possibly was confusion over a balloon found earlier in June, 1947, as well as, Mack Brazel’s intimidation by the military about his descriptions of the material).

# Former Captain and Ph.D. (doctor) Lorenzo Kent Kimball was the medical supply officer at Roswell in July 1947. Randle says that Kimball knew doctors, nurses, enlisted men, pilots and officers at Roswell Air Field. “He is emphatic in his opinion that nothing happened,” says Randle, “that the story of the preliminary autopsy at Roswell is false, and the whole idea of a flying saucer crash is without merit.”

BIG BRASS

In 1947 Colonel (later Brigadier General) Thomas J. DuBose was the Chief of Staff of the Eighth Air Force stationed at the, then, Fort Worth Army Air Field. He was ordered by Major General Clements McMullen (Deputy Commander of the Strategic Air Command) to inquire about the material at Roswell. DuBose was ordered to send the material to McMullen, who, in turn, forwarded it to Nathan F. Twining at the Air Material Command.

This week’s super close results in a handful of state primaries and special elections have highlighted a longstanding problem in our democracy: the officials overseeing the vote count and recounts can occasionally be candidates in those races—or their appointees.

Exhibit A for this conflict of interest, with all of its repercussions for public confidence in the process, is the nation’s most notorious voter suppression-endorsing secretary of state, Kansas Republican Kris Kobach. He leads incumbent Gov. Jeff Colyer by fewer than 200 votes out of more than 300,000 cast in Tuesday’s Republican gubernatorial primary.

As KansasCity.com reported, “No law requires Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach to recuse himself from a recount in the governor’s race, but legal and political experts say he should to maintain trust in the election.” Later on Wednesday at a campaign event, Kobach said that he would not recuse himself.

“The recount thing is done on a county level, so the secretary of state does not actually participate directly in the recount,” he said. “The secretary of state’s office merely serves as a coordinating entity overseeing it all but not actually counting the votes.”

You might think that there could be no clearer example of why non-partisan election administration should be a standard in American democracy. But the conflicts of interest in Kansas only deepen as one digs into the mechanics of the process in one of the state's most voter-rich regions—despite Kobach’s contention that he’s at arm’s length.

That’s because in Johnson County, where Kansas City and its suburbs are located, elections are overseen by Johnson County Election Commissioner Ronnie Metsker, who was appointed by Kobach in February 2016, as KansasCity.com noted in another report. “Before he became election commissioner, he was chairman of the Johnson County Republican Party and a state representative.”

That’s not all. On Tuesday, Johnson County used 1,000 new voting machines in 192 polling locations for the first time. Beyond underestimating turnout, deploying too few machines and thus causing long lines, there was confusion about how to transfer the computer-tabulated precinct counts on memory sticks to a central office.

“What should have taken seconds at first took minutes, and then minutes turned into half hours,” Metsker told local reporters.

The incumbent, Gov. Colyer, wasn’t conceding and issued a statement saying he would wait until absentee and provisional ballots are counted. Provisional ballots are given to people not listed on precinct voter rolls, but are counted if county officials find they were correctly registered. In 2016’s GOP gubernatorial primary, Colyer’s campaign said there were 6,333 provisional ballots.

This sequence of events—the state’s top election officer is running for governor and will oversee the recount in his primary; with a person he appointed overseeing the process in a problem-plagued big county—wasn’t created by Russian intelligence agents seeking to undermine public confidence in American elections. This is a homegrown mess that underscores the layers of problems associated with partisan officials running elections.

This pattern isn’t confined to Kansas. In Georgia, voting rights groups have called on Republican Secretary of State Brian Kemp to resign—rather than oversee the November general election where he is the GOP nominee for governor.

Common Cause Georgia Executive Director Sara Henderson noted that other previous secretaries of state have stepped down when seeking other offices. But a spokesman for Kemp told the Washington Post he has no plans to do that, citing other officeholders who didn’t resign when seeking another top government job.

But there’s a difference when you’re the senior state election official overseeing your own race, as opposed to another elected official running for another office. Common Cause Georgia and others, like the Georgia NAACP, demanded that Kemp step down, in part, after “an app for the office of secretary of state included links to Web pages associated with his campaign,” the Post noted. “Kemp has since removed the links.”

Most advanced nations have non-partisan officials running their elections. But not the world’s self-proclaimed greatest democracy—and Russia has nothing to do with this.

It has been recently shown that sparse, nonnegative tensor factorization of multi-modal electronic health record data is a promising approach to high-throughput computational phenotyping. However, such approaches typically do not leverage available domain knowledge while extracting the phenotypes; hence, some of the suggested phenotypes may not map well to clinical concepts or may be very similar to other suggested phenotypes. To address these issues, we present a novel, automatic approach called PIVETed-Granite that mines existing biomedical literature (PubMed) to obtain cannot-link constraints that are then used as side-information during a tensor-factorization based computational phenotyping process. The resulting improvements are clearly observed in experiments using a large dataset from VUMC to identify phenotypes for hypertensive patients.

As many fashion brands are acknowledging now, bras need to be tailored for every body type and size. Thankfully, American Eagle Outfitters’ lingerie brand, Aerie, retails undergarments that seem to fit across the gamut.

The brand’s latest step for its game-changing, anti-retouch ‘#AerieREAL’ initiative, ‘Don’t Change You. Change Your Bra!”, sees it partnering with the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) to empower females who might feel conscious about shopping for bras.

To campaign the movement, 57 real women of various body types, skin tones, and disabilities, have been recruited to pose in its shoots. The ensemble includes wheelchair user Abby Sams, vitiligo model Lexus Morgan, and Gaylyn Henderson, who is photographed with her ostomy bag.

The series also doesn’t shy away from physical “taboos” created by society, such as underarm hair and wrinkles.

Additionally, Aerie has launched a ‘Best Fit Finder’ tool that employees can use to help shoppers obtain the perfect measurements and fits for bras. It’s also offering adhesive notes for customers to pen positive affirmations onto, and then paste onto the walls of changing rooms, to help boost the confidence of other patrons.

XXIII Edizione Vicenza Jazz, 10-20 maggio 2018 Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

This Trump Ally Will Oversee His Own Recount in Governor's Race — And No Law Can Stop Him Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
And another secretary of state will oversee his own election as well.

Notes and observations from day six of Washington State preseason football camp Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

Temperatures finally broke triple digits at Lewiston’s Sacajawea Junior High – the count was 102 when I arrived – as Washington State battled through another steamy, hazy day of preseason camp. Our daily notes and observations…

Notes and observations

– It was boiling hot Wednesday, but that didn’t seem to affect the team’s demeanor. Not long after arriving, I heard running backs coach Eric Mele tell players “You know who’s practicing today? Everybody in America. You know who’s sore today? Everybody in America.” Later on, I eavesdropped on Nick Begg telling a few teammates, “Beautiful day in Lewiston, Idaho, baby!”

– Which isn’t to say fatigue isn’t setting in. Mike Leach, however, was encouraged to see it on day six rather than earlier in camp. He believes it’s a signal his team is better conditioned than some of those in the past.

– More on the quarterbacks below, but Gardner Minshew, Trey Tinsley and Anthony Gordon all got multiple shots during the skeleton period and each had a series in 11-on-11. The competition is still neck-and-neck-and-neck, and Leach believes it’s one of the tightest he’s seen as a head coach – and probably the tightest one that’s involved three guys. “This is as tough as any of them because we have three guys,” Leach said, “and they’re all competing pretty hard and they’re all playing pretty well.”

– Tay Martin continues to look like an All-Pac-12 First Teamer in the making and the sophomore receiver is doing his best to make plays for all three QBs. He reeled in two touchdown balls from Gordon during the team period and made the other two look good during skeleton. “I just go out there and give it my all each play for every quarterback,” Martin said afterward. “Can’t really control what happens each play, but I try my best for each quarterback.”

– Special teams coach Matt Brock hasn’t been able to identify a starting kicker yet … or a starting punter for that matter. Ryan Henderson made a 35-yarder and hit the upright on a 37-yarder Wednesday. Jack Crane, meanwhile, bounced one off the upright from 35 yards out before making one from the same distance. Oscar Draguicevich and Oliver Graybar are still both in the mix to nail down the punting job.

– One thing Brock is sure of: Jamire Calvin and Travell Harris will contribute heavily in the return game this season and both will have a chance to help in punt return and kick return.

– Without a few defensive linemen available Wednesday (see below), the Cougars experimented with Willie Taylor III, Jonathan Lolohea and Misiona Aiolupotea-Pei up front during the team period.

– Non-participants on Wednesday included defensive linemen Logan Tago and Lamonte McDougle. Receiver Kyle Sweet, who’d been a non-participant each of the last two days, wasn’t in attendance. Defensive end Nnamdi Oguayo missed his third consecutive day of practice. Defensive lineman Derek Moore missed his second. Kedron Williams wore a yellow no-contact jersey, but Max Borghi returned to full participation – and looked strong – after two days in the yellow bib.

– After a full-pads practice on Tuesday, the Cougars stripped down to just shoulder pads on Wednesday. Thursday’s practice will be a shortened walkthrough before Friday’s scrimmage, which will take place sometime in the evening at Martin Stadium.

Highlights

– Early in the 1-on-1 period, Dezmon Patmon beat Darrien Molton to the end zone and vaulted a few feet off the ground to high-point a throw from Tinsley. Still thinking he’ll be the Cougars’ toughest cover this season.

– Sean Harper Jr., who’s been the best DB not named Jalen Thompson this camp, flew across the middle during the skeleton period to come away with a pick on Tinsley, who was attempting to throw to Tay Martin.

– Gordon unleashed a deep one to Rodrick Fisher down the left sideline on his first snap in skelly. Fisher is already problematic with his speed, but the freshman from Spokane seems much more comfortable with contact than he did in the spring.

– In skelly, Thompson broke on a ball thrown by Minshew, intended for Robert Lewis, and deflected it into the air for Hunter Dale to grab.

– Thompson finally got his interception during Gordon’s skeleton series, catching a ball that whizzed right through the hands of freshman wideout Kassidy Woods.

– Gordon, who got the first snaps during 11-on-11, aired out a pretty ball over the defensive secondary to Renard Bell who caught it in the end zone for a 32-yard touchdown.

– Taylor and Lolohea combined to “sack” Gordon in the backfield a few plays later. Taylor got there first, sweeping around the back, and Lolohea met him in the front to finish it off.

– Gordon then threw consecutive TDs to Martin. His precision on the second was excellent, floating a 17-yard ball to the back left corner of the end zone, where Martin used his long arms to track it down and tap a toe in before stepping out.

– James Williams caught a shovel pass from Tinsley during the second series of 11-on-11, then cut outside and spun as he was getting hit before progressing another 5 yards or so. Williams ran for a physical 5-yard touchdown later in the period, breaking through about five defenders on his way to the end zone.

– The highlight of the day for Minshew came on a 50-yard touchdown pass to Easop Winston. Minshew hit Winston in stride down the right sideline and a split-second after coming down with the ball, the receiver split through two defenders – Deion Singleton and Isaiah Love – before dashing to the end zone. The defenders collided trying to tackle Winston and the play left Singleton shaken up.

– Karson Block stuffed Max Borghi for a loss of 2 yards after a handoff from Minshew.

– Minshew completed a long screen pass to Woods and the freshman receiver proceeded to gallop 20 yards around the right edge of the field, eventually crossing the goal line.

– Borghi danced through the defense and absorbed a few hits on his way to 7-yard rushing touchdown on the third to final play of practice.

– Minshew and Winston were clicking the same way Gordon and Martin were Wednesday afternoon. With two plays to go, the ECU transfer waited for his receiver to break across the back of the end zone before firing a bullet into his hands. Marcus Strong defended the play well, but Winston won out with his strong hands.

Keeping up with the QBs

Gardner Minshew: Leach said Wednesday “Gardner gets better and better the more reps he gets,” so it makes sense that day six was his most productive yet. Minshew was good, not great in skeleton period although he more than made up for it during the team period, completing 7-of-8 passes and getting through without an interceptoin. The one miss was a bad drop by Travell Harris, so you might as well mark it a perfect day for the East Carolina transfer. He showed impeccable touch on a few of his throws and scrambled out of the pocket when he felt defensive pressure – usually straight forward for a few yards.

Anthony Gordon: The redshirt junior probably had the best skeleton period of the three QBs, hitting on a few long bombs – including the very first play of the drill which saw him uncork a pass to Rodrick Fisher down the left sideline. He also threw a pick in skeleton – as did the other two – but kept clean during 11-on-11. He was 6-of-8 after throwing incomplete on two of his first three passes and threw four touchdowns during the period. Gordon generally is the least animated of the three QBs, but he was particularly amped up to throw his fourth TD – a 5-yarder to Renard Bell – and let out a “Let’s (expletive) go!” after the play ended.

Trey Tinsley: Tinsley completed six of his nine passes in the team period, which isn’t bad unless your competitors combined to go 13-for-16 the same day. He moved the offense, though it never felt like he found the same rhythm Minshew and Gordon did. He also didn’t close his series as efficiently as the other two. After going 6-of-7 to start, Tinsley threw incomplete twice in the red zone and was unable to pass for a TD, while his challengers each threw multiple.

Cammon Cooper: Leach repeatedly referred to the QB battle as a three-man competition Wednesday, so it seems less and less likely Cooper will be part of the equation.

Quotable

“No, I think it’s ridiculous. You’re either on or off. You’re either commited to playing in college or you’re committed to playing professionally. Nobody needs a bunch of guys wallowing around thinking about what they’re going to do. They’re either in or they’re out. That’s how I think it should be.” – Mike Leach, on if college football should adopt the new college basketball rule allowing players to return to college if they go undrafted.

Man who jumped out of freezer and died was cold-case suspect

NEW YORK (AP) — A man who jumped out of a freezer and threatened employees with a knife at a New York City brunch spot and then died was a suspected cold-case killer who had just been released from jail in Boston, authorities revealed on Monday.

Carlton Henderson screamed “Away from me, Satan!” as he rushed out of the walk-in freezer at Sarabeth’s on Manhattan’s Upper West Side Sunday morning, police said. Kitchen employees stripped away the knife and took him to the floor, police said, and he went into cardiac arrest.

Henderson was facing murder charges in the 1988 shooting deaths of 26-year-old William Medina and 22-year-old Antonio Dos Reis.

Henderson, 54, of Cave Creek, Arizona, got out of jail last Wednesday when a judge threw out key evidence in the pending double-murder case and ordered him released on his own recognizance.

Judge Janet Sanders said Henderson’s 1993 statements suggesting his involvement in the 1988 killings were inadmissible because he and investigators had an understanding that they couldn’t be used against him.

Henderson was looking to trade the information for a reduction in his 15-year prison sentence on drug and gun charges, Sanders wrote, and investigators treated him as a cooperating witness — not a target or a suspect — in his 55 hours of questioning.

Prosecutors argued such an informal immunity agreement, known as a proffer, would have been made in writing and no corroborating paperwork has been found.

Police arrested Henderson in St. Louis, Missouri, in June 2017 after bullets from the Boston killings were matched to a gun recovered in a fatal shooting in Miami in 1993.

Any people with ESOP experience to poke holes in the above plan, or give a vote of confidence? Any input on self-financing options and pitfalls would be appreciated as well.

I'm not an expert by any means on all things ESOP, but I retired from my company which is a 100% employee owned ESOP company after 10 years. Overall it provided tremendous pretax wealth to all its participating employees but I always felt exposed to the risk of losing everything should the company cease to exist.

<snip>

I am very grateful for the huge financial opportunity but I'm much more relaxed now that all that money is sitting in Vanguard index funds under my control.

Thanks for the comments. I'm all for diversification too. We're continuing 401k + matching and not reducing salaries due to the ESOP, so our pitch to employees is that the ESOP is a supplement and even in the worst case that the company tanks we're not leaving employees high and dry.

Towards the end of my career there, there was tremendous concern by employees at how they were going to get this wealth of money tied up in stocks out. The rules changed from a lump sum payment to a payment stretched over five years. This made people nervous since a lot could happen in five years...

We have a diversification option written into our plan. An employee can choose a 25% diversification at age 55 and and additional 25% diversification at age 60.

This really makes a difference, it is allowing me to retire early. I have enough between 401K and (50%) rollover from ESOP to meet our needs even if share value were to go to zero for the final 50%. Obviously I am game-planning for a significant payout at age 65, but I would never have risked it without the 50% diversification.

I strongly recommend something similar for the OP's plan. You can write "after the loans are paid off" language into the plan for the beginning of such a program.

Our understanding is that the diversification option is required by law, with details mirroring what David Jay outlined. There is also a requirement that the employee needs to have been at the company for 10 or more years before diversifying. We plan to provide the option to diversify as a result, with the diversification option being rolling the 25% or 50% of the ESOP funds into our 401k plan which offers a good selection of low cost index and target date funds.

So there will be an option to diversify, but there will be at least 10 years of that queasy feeling of having a large amount of money tied up in a company that could tank at a minimum, potentially much longer for younger employees.

I'll have to do some digging - maybe at some point we could lower the diversification age requirement to let younger people take advantage of it. Not sure if that's allowed by the IRS though.

The catch with our company is that by age 55 when the law kicked in, most of the original 50 owners had so much money in their ESOP plan they just chose to retire. None of my peers worked past 55. I left at 40. In essence, nobody reached the age at which diversification was an option.

I think my residual question is the snow problem. I was hoping someone had worked out some baffle or something that would keep the snow drifts from the generator but still let the generator have air access. Or some sort of piping from the air intake and exhaust.

They make electrical mats that embed in concrete or asphalt. Just make an over-sized pad for the generator with one of those embedded into it and hooked to a switch inside your home.

http://www.morelectricheating.com/produ ... XMATS.aspx

Or rig up a pressure pad that triggers a flamethrower once the snow hits a certain weight. You could probably do some really cool stuff if you calculate the intake and exhaust flow requirements and hook up a Land Rover/Jeep style snorkel on the intake and a similar setup on the exhaust side. Then if the snow was deep enough nobody would know what was under there since they would just see two pipes sticking out of the snow. :happy

BWW Review: TWO BY TWO at TheatreWorks Of Southern Indiana Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache

Review by Annette Skaggs

I can honestly say that Broadway's musical Two by Two was new to me, as was the TheatreWorks of Southern Indiana company. As I love to be introduced to productions and theater groups that are unfamiliar to me, I got two for the price of one. I know there has to be a joke in there somewhere!

If you are unfamiliar with the show, Two by Two is based on Clifford Odetts' play, The Flowering Peach. I am sure that you can infer what the musical is about: Noah and his preparation of the Ark that will save his family and animals of the World while God creates the Great Flood.

The show appeared on Broadway in 1970 to mixed reviews. Having experienced it now, I can see why. While the cast did a fantastic job of keeping the dialogue conversational and spritely, I believe it was a case of making due with what the script offered. Despite a few pointed giggles here and there, I wasn't wowed by Peter Stone's book. I thank the cast for adding their own spins and improv takes throughout the show, namely Chris Bundy as Noah.

Many of us are familiar with Richard Rodgers' music from classics such as Carousel, Pal Joey, and many others. While Two by Two doesn't have a song list that we all know by heart almost 50 years later, the songs it does have to blend with the story ("Two by Two") and even tug at the heartstrings ("Hey Girlie"). The best singing of the evening came from Josh O'Brien (Shem), Neil Brewer (Ham), Will Smith (Japheth), and Mr. Bundy in the barbershop quartet closing of "You Have Got to Have a Rudder on the Ark". That was perhaps some of the best harmonizing that I've heard in a great while.

By and large, the acting and singing were pretty even across the board.

Let's begin with Colleen McGuirk's Goldie. Her "The Golden Ram" was right where it needed to be on the top but lagged in delivery on the bottom. I did enjoy her flirtatiousness with Ham. Megan Kubac's unhappy Rachel was nicely matched with Neil Brewer's cad-like Ham. I appreciated Jessica Kayrouz Ray's interpretation of Leah, who was equally as greedy as her husband Shem. Her reactions to being overlooked or her fussing at her husband were spot on. Mr. O'Brien certainly did play Shem up, as the older brother who got everything and made sure that his siblings knew it. While Kate Henderson had a few missed notes and some intonation problems a couple of times, I enjoyed her turn as Noah's loving wife Esther.

Mr. Bundy and Mr. Smith get the lion's share of the lines and songs. Mr. Smith's Japheth was just the right touch of cynical "teenager" and cautious adult and has a nice voice that played well for the role and the house. Artistic Director Chris Bundy knows the role of Noah inside and out, but his accent would change every now and then. Also, I have to ask, were you channeling Jack Benny a little bit? Some of your mannerisms reminded me of him.

Mr. Bundy was also the director, and his stagecraft was very clever. In the first act the setting looked like a hut one would see in the desert or on a beach, but in the second act, it quickly converted into the gopher wood Ark top deck. Great job by the stagehands in getting the conversion done so quickly and efficiently. I might have made the hut/Ark housing's landing space a little wider. It didn't seem like there was a lot of room for error.

The able hands of Cathy Ryan accompanied the troupe on the keyboard, along with bassist Jack Meisburg under the musical direction Hannegan Roseberry. While the keyboard was perfect for the small space I could barely detect the bass save for hearing the sound of the string being plucked here and there.

Speaking of small space, the theater of TheatreWorks of Southern Indiana is cozy. The front row is less than a yard away from the stage. Aside from the tiny space, they have a lovely area upstairs where one can purchase delicious desserts and enjoy a glass of wine during intermission.

And the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department confirms that one of their off-duty officers was killed. But as with all of the victims, they haven't named him. And family members aren't talking to the media either. But Charleston Hartfield had deep ties in the Las Vegas community, both as a police officer and as a coach of youth football.

Tish Hinojosa, West

Reviewed by: Kim Walter, July 2018

I was very impressed with this woman! Unfortunately, I lost the detailed review I wrote on her before it got typed, but suffice it to say that she had a solid career in the US, lived in Germany for 10 years, had numerous surgeries, a disastrous relationship, and now she’s back in the US, Her singing career began singing Tejano in New Mexico, and she spanned being a folk singer-songwriter, singer of Border Music and Americana, before landing solidly in the country genre.I really enjoyed the more south of the border flavored tunes; I found it interesting how she combined those elements with country through her beautiful voice. Every single song is good, but 2, 4, 7,**8 and 10 were especially good.

1.Med - title track, upbeat country tinged Americana vibe
2.slow/med - romantic tribute to the mission bells of her hometown
3.slow/med - gentle, meandering tune
4.slow/med - Patsy Cline style bittersweet shuffle
5.slow/med - saddle music, slow country rock
6.Med - upbeat tune co-written by son, Adan Hinojosa-Barker
7.med -Tejano style cover of T. Henderson’s song about an immigrant mother
8.Slow -Mexican classic made country with pedal steel, fiddle and accordion
9.slow/med - sweet song about roses and dreams
10.Slow - gentle song about her beloved guitar
11.Med - cover of a monkee’s hit with Michael Martin Murphey (her mentor of old)
12.Slow - version of Jimmy LaFave’s song dedicated to a dear friend
13.Slow- uplifting tune, REALLY nice end to album

Qualche ora dopo, Krista Vernoff smentisce tutto e conferma: Meredith troverà l'amore in Grey's Anatomy 15.

Calloway County High School Victim of Two Bomb Threats in as Many School Days Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache
Law Enforcement agencies are investigating two bomb threats in as many school days at Calloway County High School. School officials evacuated students around noon Monday and locked down the nearby middle school. Kentucky State Trooper First Class Jay Thomas says the threats were on notes left in a girl’s bathroom. Thomas says they have some persons of interest, but no suspects. Thomas says the school system received a threat around the same time last year. While there’s no public motive the school systems are administering state tests. Thomas says law enforcement must take every threat seriously, but he says the repeated threats are frustrating. Thomas says a bomb sniffing dog was dispatched from Henderson, KY but he wasn’t sure whether or not the investigating officer would need the dog’s service. At the time of the interview Thomas wasn’t clear if student’s would return to the school building before the end of the school day.

Judith Burns, an SEC spokeswoman, declined to comment. Tesla, which hasn’t been accused of wrongdoing, declined to comment.
