Tysons Biergarten, which for the past two years has brought life to an otherwise sleepy parcel waiting for development near the Greensboro Metro station, will soon be moving on.  While the timing of the beer garden’s closure is still up in the air, its owners do know where in the neighborhood they’ll be popping up next: the site of the Scotts Run development from Cityline Partners by the McLean Metro — the next stop on the Silver Line.           The Knowledge Matters school tour: A visit to seven schools adopting high-quality English language arts curricula      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Editor’s note: This article originally appeared in a slightly different form on CenterPoint Education Solutions’ blog.

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of visiting a group of schools across the country distinguished by their embrace of high-quality curriculum. The tour was sponsored by the Knowledge Matters Campaign, which seeks to lift up the stories of schools that use knowledge-rich English language arts curriculum to promote educational excellence, provide equity, and inspire in students a passion for learning.

The campaign is particularly interested in drawing attention to schools and curricula that bring a joyous, knowledge-filled schooling experience to students of poverty, as they have been the ones particularly harmed by a skills-based approach that is arguably one of the most significant factors in reading scores remaining flat over the past twenty years (see this article published by the Campaign last month), to say nothing of driving out a love of learning in our young people.

Most of the schools we visited on the tour had adopted a curriculum highly rated by EdReports, the independent non-profit organization that, for the past four years, has served as something of a Consumer Reports on Common Core-aligned curriculum. Three key instructional shifts: regular practice with complex texts and their academic language; reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from texts; and building knowledge through content-rich curriculum, underpin the Common Core standards in English language arts and are what guide the reviews on EdReports.

The schools included on the tour employed a variety of instructional approaches and represented different geographic locations, demographic diversity, and governance structures. The common feature was their commitment to knowledge-rich schooling and their faith in comprehensive, high-quality curriculum, implemented school-wide, as a means of achieving it.

So, what stood out to us as we visited these schools? Without a doubt, the most salient feature—which was, in fact, a distinguishing feature (as it was in stark contrast to our experience in schools last fall that had not embraced the importance of knowledge-building)—was the fact that all students were engaged with grade-level complex texts. While we certainly saw the full range of student reading levels one would expect of a school serving high-need students (including typically large numbers of English learners), in each classroom we visited, texts were interrogated communally, thus exposing students, who may not have been able to read all the words on the page, to key vocabulary and content knowledge. Importantly, all kids got to discuss, amongst themselves, the ideas in the text. This is huge. As Jaden, a previously struggling reader at Monticello-Brown Summit Elementary School in Greensboro, North Carolina, told me, “I like it when we read it (a book) together because you can get others’ opinions. I like being in book arguments.”

Another profound experience of the tour was the amount of content knowledge these students were exposed to. A recent survey by the Thomas B. Fordham Institute found that 56 percent of ELA teachers worry, “not enough attention has been paid to building students’ general knowledge,” with 46 percent saying their curriculum and/or instructional materials “do a poor job of building students’ general knowledge.” A brief review of the travel blog associated with the Knowledge Matters School Tour will reveal a very different story, with topics—mind you, for K–8 students—ranging from the War of 1812, Athenian governance, medieval Europe, the lost colony of Roanoke, Galileo, animal anatomy, patterns in nature, Greek mythology, etc.

It’s no wonder, given how much kids like to “learn stuff,” that a final standout feature of the schools we visited was virtually no disciplinary problems. The look and feel—what some would call the school culture—at Maryvale, a classical school in Phoenix, and Detroit Prep/Detroit Achievement Academy, which both use EL Education 2.0 (formerly named Expeditionary Learning), were studies in contrast. But the level of student engagement was uniformly high. In both cases, and indeed in each school we visited, there was a palpable sense—among kids and adults alike—that real learning was taking place, that knowledge was expanding.

The word I most associate with the Knowledge Matters School Tour is “confidence.” While teachers told us that learning the new curriculum was the hardest thing they’d ever done in teaching, they’ve also report it being among the best things to have happened to them professionally. After years of floundering, knowing they weren’t really meeting their students’ needs but not knowing what to do about it, they report now being more certain that they’re preparing their students for academic success in the future.

When we asked the teachers to give advice to colleagues around the country who might be at the start of their journey with a new, high-quality curriculum, we generally got some version of, “have faith in the curriculum.” For many, it wasn’t until they’d gone through the school year that they developed a full appreciation. “I had to see the whole picture” says a second-grade teacher in Dayton who added, “This is by far my best year of teaching in seventeen years.”

More importantly even than these teachers’ journey to professional confidence was what we saw and heard from the kids. As Aurora, a fifth-grade student in Riverside, California, told me, “We learn higher level things and we are not afraid to share what we learn.”

The enduring images of the Knowledge Matters School Tour are of deep and shared engagements with a wide range of quality informational and literary texts; a high volume of reading; students receiving far more science, social studies/history, and art instruction than is currently seen in the average public school; and near universal confidence among students—from the smallest kindergartners to students ready to advance on to middle or high school—that they were in good hands, and that their school was preparing them for the academic challenges that lay ahead.

Would that every child could feel this way about their school…

Event Update For 2018-08-06      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

2018-08-06 - Unknown odor blows through neighborhood in North Baton Rouge (Louisiana):

Quote: "A portion of North Baton Rouge was blocked off due to multiple reports of a suspicious odor in the air Monday night. Reports of the odor began around 7:45 p.m. Monday evening. At 10:20 p.m., a spokesperson with the Baton Rouge Fire Department said the smell was dissipating, but response teams were unable to find the source. Entergy says crews searched in the area near Shelley Street and Evangeline Street, and while there was an odor in the air, it's not from gas."

2018-08-06 - Unknown rotten egg odor hits area near the coast in Onekawa (New Zealand):

Quote: "About a dozen Onekawa Industrial area businesses were evacuated this morning after reports of a gas leak in the area. Fire and Emergency in Napier were called just before 10.15am and three appliances went to the scene which centred around Niven St, Edmundsen St, Wakefield St and Thorn Place. Cordons were set up and traffic diverted while staff and occupants of buildings in the immediate area were evacuated, including a large number from the Quality Bakers in Niven St. Using gas detectors crews moved through the area but at the end of a detailed search of buildings and sites came up with nothing."

2018-08-06 - Insurers fleeing California and other western states as fires escalate:

Quote: "Residents of U.S. towns damaged by wildfires may need to prepare for another repercussion: insurers that decide to cancel policies because of increased risks from more frequent fires. Facing mounting losses, some property insurers are pulling back from selling policies in California and other western states where wildfire risk is elevated. In California alone, damages had mounted to at least $12 billion by early 2018, while the state's Carr fire likely added another $1.5 billion in insured losses."

Note: "See yas, buh bye, good luck with that whole getting-destroyed-by-fire thing!'

2018-08-06 - Private jet hit by smoke, plane makes emergency landing at airport in Columbia (Missouri):

Quote: "No one was hurt after a private jet made an emergency landing at Columbia Regional Airport Monday night. Columbia director of community relations Steven Sapp told ABC 17 News the pilot aboard the Cessna Citation II jet reported smoke in the cockpit and declared an emergency around 7:40 p.m. One other person was aboard the plane."

2018-08-06 - Metal business heavily damaged by fire at 6:47 AM in Elkton (Maryland), nobody there:

2018-08-06 - Recycling center fire rages in Niagara Falls (New York), may burn for days:

Quote: "Fire crews remain at the scene of a blaze that broke out at a College Avenue facility used to store cardboard. Officials say crews were called out late Monday night for a fire at a cardboard storage yard at a paper recycling facility in the city of Niagara Falls. The cardboard is contained in an open lot in an industrial section, which is helping to keep the fire contained Tuesday morning. Fire officials say the blaze could continue to burn for several days."

2018-08-06 - Landfill fire breaks out in Calistoga (California):

2018-08-06 - Wildfire complex grows to 283,800 acres in Mendocino County (California), now the biggest wildfire in California history:

Quote: "Two wildfires blazing in California, known as the Mendocino Complex fire, became the largest recorded in state history on Monday, crossing a grim milestone. The fire, in Colusa, Lake and Mendocino counties, has killed two people and burned almost 283,800 acres as of Monday. It has destroyed at least 143 structures, including 75 homes, according to Cal Fire officials. More than 9,000 structures remain under threat. The Mendocino complex fires, which encompass an area the size of Los Angeles, surpassed the Thomas wildfire in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, which burned 281,893 acres last year."

Quote: "We're looking at over 629,000 acres of ground and vegetation burned in California since January 1 of this year. Last year, same period of time, 223,000 acres..."

Note: So wildfires are burning at almost triple the rate of last year, and last year was itself a record-setting year. From the full hypothesis: "Probably the most noticeable effect will be fires and explosions sweeping across the planet."

NC COUNTY ELECTION BOARDS ILLEGALLY PURGED THOUSANDS OF VOTERS IN 2016: Elections officials in Cumberland, Moore and Beaufort counties illegally canceled the registrations of thousands of voters before the 2016 election and are prohibited from similarly purging their voter rolls in the future based on challenges by activists, a federal judge has ruled. In the weeks leading up to the November 2016 election, one Cumberland County resident representing the Voter Integrity Project of NC challenged 4,000 voters and a voter representing the Moore Voter Integrity Project challenged almost 500 Moore County voters. Four people in Beaufort County challenged about 140 voters there. The three county elections board sustained the challenges in most cases, canceling the registrations of about 3,900 voters.

UNC BOARD OF GOVERNORS ACCUSED OF PARTISANSHIP BY FORMER MEMBERS: A bipartisan group of former UNC Board of Governors members have spoken out against the current board, calling its recent deliberations “clearly bad governance.” In an unusual step, 10 former members signed an opinion published Wednesday on the Higher Education Works Foundation website, criticizing the board for being too driven by politics. Higher Education Works is a bipartisan group that advocates for higher education in North Carolina. “Unfortunately, it appears our Board of Governors has become increasingly politicized, and some members are conflicted,” the piece said. “Politics has no place in the selection of members, and any conflicts of interest must be avoided. Boards must have a high level of independence and professionalism to be effective.”

JUDICIAL VACANCY AMENDMENT COULD BE USED AS VEHICLE TO DODGE GUBERNATORIAL VETOES: State Sen. Jeff Jackson, a Charlotte Democrat and attorney, proposed a bill that would clarify the judicial vacancy amendment to block the attachment of other bills. But Republican leaders didn’t consider it. “Given the opportunity to fix this — and the decision not to — it’s pretty clear they like the idea of passing a constitutional amendment that will let them circumvent a governor’s veto whenever they want,” Jackson tweeted recently. Josh Stein, the Democratic state attorney general, has made the same argument. To support Jackson’s claim, his office provided an interpretation from the General Assembly’s nonpartisan Legislative Analysis Division. “Because there is no restriction on adding other matters to these judicial vacancy bills, a court could reasonably interpret that a judicial vacancy bill and legislation on other matters is not subject to the Governor’s veto. Because this would be new language in the Constitution if adopted this fall, a decision on how to interpret and apply that language would ultimately be made by the courts,” Kara A. McCraw, staff attorney and legislative analyst, told his office in a July 31 email.

UNC REVISING HEALTH TEXTBOOK THAT BLAMED HOLOCAUST VICTIMS FOR "GIVING UP.": The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill has revised a textbook for a required fitness course that called cancer “a disease of choice” and included a theory asserting Holocaust victims failed to tap into their inner strength. The university released a statement saying revisions to “21st Century Fitness” began in spring, in cooperation with the publisher, The News & Observer reported Tuesday. The university had made no mention of a revision when the Raleigh newspaper asked about the online textbook’s contents last month. The textbook is part of online courseware sold by Perceivant to multiple universities, and was authored by two Brigham Young University faculty members. Perceivant’s director of collegiate partnerships, Joel Davis, told the newspaper that its contracts allow universities to customize content based on its individual needs. It’s read by students in the one-credit course Lifetime Fitness, which assigns students reading material on lifestyles while incorporating physical activity. It’s required of all undergraduates, with nearly 5,000 taking the class each year.

TRUMP-LOVING REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN INDICTED FOR INSIDER TRADING: According to the indictment, Collins was attending the Congressional Picnic at the White House on June 22, 2017, when he received an email from the company's chief executive saying that a trial of a drug the company developed to treat multiple sclerosis was a clinical failure. After a public announcement, the company's stock price plunged 92 percent. Within minutes of receiving the bad news, Collins used a phone to try to "reach his son six times in five minutes," Berman said. "And then on the seventh attempt, he got through to his son and, as alleged in the indictment, he illegally relayed the results of that drug test so his son could trade on that information." The next morning, according to the indictment, Collins began selling his shares, unloading enough over a two-day period to avoid $570,900 in losses before the public announcement of the drug trial results. Prosecutors said the son traded on the inside information and passed it to a third defendant, Stephen Zarsky. Their combined trades avoided over $768,000 in losses, authorities said. They said Zarsky traded on it and tipped off at least three others.

TERROR: 'Total Retaliation' Album Due In September; New Song 'Mental Demolition' Available      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Influential hardcore veterans TERROR will release their seventh full-length album, "Total Retaliation", on September 28 via Pure Noise Records. The band gives fans a taste of the new record today, with the debut of their first single, "Mental Demolition". Also announced today, TERROR will unleash "Total Retaliation" on fans across North America on their forthcoming tour, which will feature support from HARM'S WAY, BACKTRACK, YEAR OF THE KNIFE and CANDY. Dates listed below. Tickets on sale Friday, August 10 at 10:00 a.m. local time. Known for their unrelenting, furious style of metal infused hardcore, Los Angeles's homegrown TERROR holds nothing back on "Total Retaliation", which features FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY's Will Putney (THY ART IS MURDER, BODY COUNT, KNOCKED LOOSE) in the producer's chair and is the band's first new material since last year's "The Walls Will Fall" EP. Clocking in at just under 30 minutes, "Total Retaliation" is a succinct yet intense message of resistance within a world that can inspire little else. It's a helping hand for the disillusioned and a firm middle finger to the authorities that are tearing apart society as we know it. As the band's seventh full-length studio album it serves as yet another example of why TERROR have not only endured, but remained at the top of their game for over 15 years. "I really proud of this record," said vocalist Scott Vogel. "I'm happy that after 16 years, we still have the urgency and aggression , and our youthful spirit is still kicking. "Everything — from the lyrics to the riffs to the overall energy — on this album feels right. "People that have heard the record keep telling me it's the terror record they have been wanting for, and it's our best in a while, so I'm super exited for this thing to come out in late September and we have a great team releasing this. Pure Noise in the States, Nuclear Blast in Europe and Triple B working on the vinyl."
