In BlacKkKlansman, Spike Lee Tries to Do… a Lot      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
by David F. Walker

blackkklansman-1.jpg

Based on retired police detective Ron Stallworth’s 2014 memoir Black Klansman, director Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman stars John David Washington (son of Denzel Washington) as the first Black cop on the Colorado Springs police department in the early 1970s.

Stuck in a thankless position in the evidence room and surrounded by fellow officers who do little to hide their racism, Stallworth longs for something with a bit more action. He’s given an undercover assignment to infiltrate a rally hosted by the local Black student union, featuring guest speaker Kwame Ture/Stokley Carmichael (portrayed by Corey Hawkins, in a cameo that feels like it came out of Lee’s Malcolm X).

Residents protest Broadmoor Seven Falls shuttles      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

A dozen or so Colorado Springs residents gathered at the corners of Cresta Road and Cheyenne Boulevard to protest the Broadmoor Seven Falls shuttle buses that have recently been frequenting the neighborhoods near North Cheyenne Cañon.

"The magnitude is overwhelming," says protester Bruce Hamilton.

Originally, the neighbors say, Seven Falls shuttles picked passengers up at the Golden Bee Gastropub and took them [mostly] along Mesa Avenue to Seven Falls —  a lot of the route passed through Broadmoor property.

But that all changed just over a month ago when the Broadmoor hosted the U.S. Senior Open golf tournament. To accommodate the influx of people and traffic the tournament would bring, The Broadmoor struck a deal with the Norris Penrose Event Center to use a portion of their property as a parking area and shuttle pick-up/drop-off point for Seven Falls' guests and distributed the shuttles across a figure-8 route using 8th Street and Cheyenne Boulevard as one side of the loop and Cresta Road and Mesa Road as the other.

"They said it was going to be temporary, and they just extended it," says Sue Spengler, who organized Saturday's protest.…

I built out this platform to truly have a 1 mile shooter.  With today's modern bullets and loads.... this one will shoot a mile +, 1,600-2,000 yards.  The 7mm Rem Mag is a often overlooked ELD load, but it is probably the lightest recoil shooter for these types of shots.

This Emotion's Exercise Is Your Next Step to Freedom From Addiction      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

This is a major part of addiction recovery. During our development years, many of us did not learn to identify or communicate feelings, and yet feelings can be one of the most treacherous and dangerous areas in our early recovery. Many addicts have at some point felt unloved, rejected or unappreciated, which puts them into a difficult place if they don't know how to express their feelings. As a way of dealing with feelings, many sex addicts end up medicating through an unhealthy activity. In any addiction, I find that feelings are something that addicts of any kind don't have much skill in fully expressing. This is just an issue of the lack of a particular skill. It is not a matter of a level of intelligence.

In the midst of the addiction, when an addict had a feeling and didn't know what it was, when they acted out, it went away. It was a simple solution. However, in recovery, you don't have the solution of acting out. You have the problem of having a feeling and not knowing what it is or what to do with it.

The following is an exercise that can help facilitate this. It is called the Feeling Exercise. If you need more explanation to complete this exercise, you can find it here.

1. I feel ______ when ______________________.

2. I first remember feeling _______ when ________.

This exercise is difficult at first. It's like learning a new computer program. Although it may be frustrating, you will get familiar with it eventually and then wonder how you lived without it. First, we identify the feeling. Without doing this part of the exercise, you can't do the second part, which is communicate. Pick a feeling word and fill in the blanks.

For example:

1. I feel calm when I go to the lake with my friend.

2. I first remember feeling calm when I was playing with an electric train set my mother bought me.

In this example, I am giving a picture. These are to be very specific experiences. What we are doing is creating files. Our emotions as addicts are similar to a messy desk. We are taking the papers off the desk in this exercise and putting them in a filing system that goes a, b, c, d and so on. In computer language, it's like having a database without file names. If we look for a file by name, we can't find it. If you're an addict, this makes you feel like you don't know what to do, think or feel, and so you act out. Being able to identify feelings is very important. Do this exercise daily for about three months so that your verbal language increases. Write them down, and you will be able to experience some feelings. After your first 30 days of abstinence, you are going to find yourself having some feelings. It is important to realize what you are feeling so that you don't relapse.

The second part of this feeling exercise is communication. You can do this exercise with a therapist or with someone in your recovery group. You will need to communicate the feeling sentences you have completed. I encourage you not to do this over the phone. Some may want to do this exercise with their partner or spouse. If you do this with your partner or spouse, it is important that you do not use your relationship in any way, shape or form as examples. An example of what not to do:

"I feel frustrated when you don't pick up your socks." You can feel frustrated when you drive down the highway or when the dog sleeps in your favorite chair, but don't aim it at your partner, and don't use the word "you." This is the only way this exercise should be done with your partner; otherwise, it will lead to another way to battle each other.

If this exercise is done correctly, it can provide a safe place for you to communicate your feelings. While one person is sharing his or her feelings, the other can listen. The person listening shouldn't make comments on the feelings shared for 72 hours. This creates a sense of security for both to know they are safe to communicate their feelings. This exercise will accelerate moving you from feeling frozen to feeling thawed. This exercise will be like sitting in the microwave emotionally. Without this exercise, I find that addicts seem to have more relapses, and it also takes a lot longer time to develop intimacy, which we will discuss next.

If you are really interested in moving your emotional development forward, I highly recommend my book Emotional Fitness. It can take anyone, addicted or not, from emotional weakness to emotional strength. The exercises it contains provide a road map to better identify, communicate, feel and even intelligently switch feelings.

"Thank you so very much for my first shout out EVER, Jody!!! Means a lot!!! Oh, and I am right there with you. I wanted Peele to direct this film, too. I, at first, thought Peele was directing and Lee was producing. I feel Lee is kinda "using" Peele for a comeback. This film woulda been a HECK of a follow-up to Get Out (2017). Definitely looking forward to this film, REGARDLESS!!! Again, thank you so much for the shout out. 👍👍

He wasn't trying to get in the Klan as a black man, he was impersonating a white man to get intels from the Klan. So, the Klan though he was white. That's why he send the white man (his buddy) to go and meet the Klan.

It's not a serious movie on race.
It's more comedic type."

Iraqi refugee charged with shooting cop last week. Feds reportedly halted his deportation in 2016.
Karrar Noaman Al Khammasi, an Iraqi refugee charged with shooting a Colorado police officer last week, was set for deportation in 2016 until federal prosecutors halted proceedings over a federal appeals court ruling that said a portion of the immigration law defining violent crime was too vague, CBS News reported. (Image source: El Paso County Sheriff's Office)
An Iraqi refugee charged with shooting a Colorado Springs police officer last week was set for deportation in 2016 — that is, until federal prosecutors halted proceedings over a federal appeals court ruling that said a portion of the immigration law defining violent crime was too vague, CBS News reported.
CBS News cited a Department of Homeland Security official who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition on anonymity regarding the case.

What reportedly happened?

The Homeland Security official — who wasn’t authorized to discuss the case on the record — told the AP on Monday that federal immigration authorities launched deportation proceedings against Karrar Noaman Al Khammasi after he violated probation terms of a felony trespassing plea in 2015, CBS News said. An immigration judge ordered his removal from the United States on June, 13, 2016, the official added, the network said.
But the DHS official said federal prosecutors halted deportation proceedings four months later, citing a ruling from the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals that declared a portion of the federal immigration law — defining what makes crimes violent and making it easier to deport those convicted of such crimes — too vague, CBS News said. The DHS official said Al Khammasi was released on Nov. 7, 2016, the network added.
More from CBS News:
In the appeals case, Moldova native Constantine Fedor Golicov was convicted in Utah of failing to stop at a police officer’s command, prompting immigration officials to begin deportation proceedings against him. On appeal, Golicov argued that federal law outlining “classes” of immigrants who could be deported, including those convicted of a “crime of violence,” was unconstitutionally vague and should not be used to justify his removal from the country.
The U.S. Supreme Court took up a similar case this year, striking down part of federal immigration law making it easier to deport immigrants convicted of “a crime of violence.” Justice Neil Gorsuch, nominated by President Donald Trump, joined the court’s four liberal justices in that 5-4 decision.
After the decision, Trump tweeted that “it means that Congress must close loopholes that block the removal of dangerous criminal aliens, including aggravated felons.”

What happened in Colorado?

Colorado Springs Police Officer Cem Duzel, 30, was among several officers who responded to a call about shots fired near the U.S. Olympic Training Center, Chief Pete Carey said, CBS News reported.
Carey said the officers found an armed suspect, and Duzel was injured in an exchange of gunfire, the network reported. Duzel was shot in the head during the Thursday morning encounter, KRDO-TV reported, adding that he underwent surgery and had shown movement in the hospital. Police said Monday that Duzel remained in “critical, but stable, condition,” CBS News reported.
Al Khammasi, 31, was wounded and remained in a hospital Monday, the network said, adding that his attorney, Jennifer Chu, declined comment Monday when reached by phone. He was charged with attempted first-degree murder, KRDO added.

What else do we know about Al Khammasi?

Court records suggest Al Khammasi lived in the area for at least five years, CBS News reported, but it isn’t clear what drew him to Colorado. The DHS official said Al Khammasi was granted refugee status and arrived in the United States in May 2012, flying to Chicago from Turkey, the network reported.
  • His first charge came in 2013 — drunken driving — followed a month later by a charge of criminal extortion over what police said revolved around a $25,000 business debt dispute, the Gazette in Colorado Springs reported, citing court papers.
  • Investigators suspect Al Khammasi threatened a man and his family and set a car on fire, the paper reported. The man told police Al Khammasi’s “behavior began to change when he came into money and was drinking and possibly using drugs,” the Gazette said, citing an arrest affidavit.
  • Al Khammasi pleaded guilty to a lesser felony — first-degree trespassing of a dwelling — and was sentenced to two years of probation, the paper said, citing court records.
  • But after he violated the terms of probation, a judge sentenced him to a year and a half in prison, the Gazette reported. Al Khammasi received credit for time served for almost half of it, the paper added, citing court records.
  • After Al Khammasi got out of prison, he picked up a traffic ticket and then was arrested in June 2017 for allegedly punching a person “in the face approximately three times,” the Gazette reported, citing court documents.
  • He was arrested in January on a weapons charge, possession by a previous offender, the paper said, adding that a tip to cops indicated Al Khammasi’s vehicle was outside a motel — and officers later found a stolen .38 Special revolver in his room.
  • In February, he entered a guilty plea on the 2017 case related to allegedly punching a person and put up $1,000 cash bail on the weapons case, the paper said, after which he was free to go.

He was subsequently given a two-year ban and later admitted that he took banned drugs for more than a decade.Rasmussens co-operation and testimony in the investigation of Leinders were integral to the outcome, said the head of the Danish anti-doping agency, Lone Hansen.Leinders is now banned from training of advising athletes and cant take part in any event sanctioned by USA Cycling, the International Cycling Union (UCI), or any other WADA Code signatory. After ending his teams collaboration with Leinders, team Sky boss Dave Brailsford said that hiring him was a mistake and that he would have never employed him if he had knew about his doping past.           BlacKkKlansman      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Spike Lee pulls no punches with his triumphant true story of the black detective who infiltrated the Klu Klux Klan

Spike Lee is many things, but subtle is not one of them.

Some directors like to seduce you into their world by offering up a figure with whom you can relate, then putting them in jeopardy. As the relatable hero feels threatened, so do you, and the thing which threatens them becomes, by proxy, your enemy, too. When Clint Eastwood opens American Sniper with his hero killing Iraqi women and children in order to "protect his brothers," he assumes that you will identify with Chris Kyle because he's a red-blooded American Navy SEAL.

Lee has never been like that, even when he's doing a traditional war movie like 2008's Miracle at St. Anna. A Lee hero is faced with an ethical dilemma and spends the film either weighing both sides before deciding to act, or explaining why he made his decision. The classic example is Mookie, the protagonist played by Lee himself in Do the Right Thing, but you can also see the same dynamic in 25th Hour. The central question is not "will our hero prevail?" so much as "will this person choose to act heroically?" The fact that, decades later, people still debate whether or not Mookie did the "right thing" speaks to the intellectual and moral power of Lee's approach.

But while Lee's approach to heroism is nuanced, the way he presents his heroes' worlds and their choices is stark, bold, and in your face. Some directors are afraid to do anything that might puncture the veil of realism. Lee's concern is immediate emotional impact. If a split-screen is what's needed to drive the point home, Lee's gotta have it. If he thinks an exaggerated, stagey performance will create the emotional beat he's looking for, he'll rev up his actor: Compare Giancarlo Esposito's manic turn as Buggin Out in Do the Right Thing to his stoic, richly textured portrayal of Gus Fring in Breaking Bad. When it works, we get the majestic sweep of Malcom X. When it doesn't, we get the disjointed, barely watchable Chi-Raq.

With the republic under siege by Trumpism, the time for subtlety has long passed. Lee rises to the occasion with BlacKkKlansman. When we meet Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), he's fresh out of the police academy when he gets a job at the Colorado Springs Police Department. At first, he's assigned to the evidence room, but when Kwame Ture (Corey Hawkins) comes to town to speak at the university, Stallworth is assigned to infiltrate the local campus activists, because he's the only black man on the force. Stallworth just wants to keep his head down and do his job, but Carmichael's speech pricks his conscience. When he meets the supposedly menacing black radicals, they turn out to be nerdy kids led by beautiful student Patrice (Laura Harrier). Lee's impressionistic presentation of Carmichael's speech — and Stallworth's awakening — is the film's first transcendent moment.

To deepen Stallworth's dilemma, his superiors are so impressed with his first undercover assignment that they promote him to detective. While perusing the newspaper at the office one day, he happens across a recruitment ad for the Ku Klux Klan, and on a lark, calls the number. Expecting to hear a recorded message, he's shocked when someone actually picks up the phone. Stallworth was not raised in the South and his years among cops at the academy have helped him perfect his code switching, so he sounds white enough to convince the Klan recruiter to set up a meeting. It's all so unexpectedly easy, he makes a rookie mistake: He gives out his own name instead of making up a cover identity.

Since Stallworth's giant natural haircut won't exactly fit under a Klan hood, he has to send in a ringer, in the person of Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver). Flip finds that the local blood-and-soil types aren't the sharpest tools in the shed, and is instantly accepted into the haters club, despite the fact that he is clearly Jewish. Meanwhile, Stallworth works the phones until he's on a first-name basis with the Grand Wizard himself, David Duke (Topher Grace).

In Washington and Driver, Lee finds two actors who understand his methods and deliver exceptional performances. If Lee is unsubtle, it's because he's trying to point out America's racial blind spots to half his audience. His didactic tendencies that came off as too preachy in the Obama era seem all too timely now. Personally, I would have cut the coda that ties the "for real shit" of BlacKkKlansman to last year's deadly neo-Nazi rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, leaving it to the audience to make the connection on their own. But this is a Spike Lee joint, and the great director wants to be damn sure you understand.

John David Washington takes on breakout role in ‘BlacKkKlansman’      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

John David Washington scores the biggest break of a booming career as the titular black undercover cop in Spike Lee’s incredible but true drama “BlacKkKlansman.”

Washington, the eldest of actor Denzel Washington’s four children, was a running back with the St. Louis Rams and Sacramento Mountain Lions until he switched to acting six years ago.

“I had been playing football my whole life and it took time to trust what I was wanting,” he said.

The transition “wasn’t tough. I had so many injuries and physical pain from football, it was a relief.

“Acting was something I wanted to do my whole life. I finally found the courage to just go for it.”

It can be easy when your Oscar-winning dad is routinely hailed as one of America’s greats, but Washington notes that there are two high achievers at home.

“My mother is a classically trained pianist, a child prodigy. She was giving piano lessons at 12. She sacrificed her career for her kids. That was part of the pressure as well.

“But I’m in a different lane from both of them,” he added. “I’ve learned a lot: Humility first. God first.”

As Ricky Jerret, opposite Dwayne Johnson, in HBO’s comedic sport series “Ballers,” Washington, 34, gets laughs.

“BlacKkKlansman,” while humorous, spotlights racism and white nationalism, as Ron Stallworth, Washington’s Colorado Springs undercover cop, mounts a sting against the local Ku Klux Klan chapter.

“Ron had to deal with a tremendous amount of adversity in Colorado Springs,” Washington said of the force’s first black officer.

“He was ‘the Jackie Robinson of police officers.’ The steps to get where he was (to go undercover) could be a movie itself.”

Washington, bearded with a mighty Afro onscreen, immersed himself in the era’s music, Blaxploitation films, documentaries, clothes and attitudes.

“All the information was to get the feel of those late-’70s times. I got a playlist that my friends and folks were helping me with. And there were stories from people who looked like me.”

“BlacKkKlansman” opens on the one-year anniversary of the violent Charlottesville, Va., white nationalist rally that left one counterprotester dead.

Lee ends his film with the horrifying scene of that woman’s death.

“That wasn’t in the plan when we were filming or rehearsing — that came later,” Washington said. “It’s a real tearjerker. I don’t have the words to express how I feel.

“It was a great call on Spike’s part. He knows what he’s doing.”

(“BlacKkKlansman” opens tomorrow.)

Adopt Nigel a Red/Golden/Orange/Chestnut - with White American Pit Bull Terrier (Adopt-a-Pet.com)      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Nigel is 2.5yrs old! He was adopted from a shelter in Colorado Springs, CO in June of 2016. He is turning three in August. We aren't sure what Nigel went through before we got him as he was turned in as a "stray". Nigel is a very loyal loving dog. He will guard you once he trusts you. It can take him a minute to warm up to you but if you are warm to him he will be warm to you. He is VERY sensitive to emotions. He feels what you feel. We have Nigel trained on a stim collar but you do not have to use it if you choose. He was trained professionally by a trainer out of Grand Rapids. His contact information is available if you are interested. Nigel LOVES to go on walks (and careful if you say the word, he will expect a walk!). He tends to be a bit excited on leash and will pull, we have used a pinch collar and it helps, but again, he can be walked without one. I'd recommend a front clip harness to try and help and lots of patience. He knows basic commands and more, contact for more information! GOOD GUARD DOG!!!!

A Colorado Spring police officer is in critical condition after being shot in the head.           August Hailstorm      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

We're still not getting the regular thunderstorms one would normally expect in the New Mexico monsoon season, but at least we're getting a little relief from the drought.

Last Saturday we had a fairly impressive afternoon squall. It only lasted about ten minutes but it dumped over an inch of rain and hail in that time. ("Over an inch" means our irritating new weather station stopped recording at exactly 1.0 even though we got some more rain after that, making us suspect that it has some kind of built-in "that can't be right!" filter. It reads in hundredths of an inch and it's hard to believe that we didn't even get another .01 after that.)

{Pile of hailstones on our deck}#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000 It was typical New Mexico hail -- lentil-sized, not like the baseballs we heard about in Colorado Springs a few days later that killed some zoo animals. I hear this area does occasionally get big hailstones, but it's fortunately rare.

There was enough hail on the ground to make for wintry snow scenes, and we found an enormous pile of hailstones on our back deck that persisted through the next day (that deck is always shady). Of course, the hail out in the yard disappeared in under half an hour once the New Mexico sun came out.

{Pile of hailstones on our deck}#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000 But before that, as soon as the squall ended, we went out to walk the property and take a look the "snow" and in particular at "La Cienega" or "the swamp", our fanciful name for an area down at the bottom of the hill where water collects and there's a little willow grove. There was indeed water there -- covered with a layer of floating hail -- but on the way down we also had a new "creek" with several tributaries, areas where the torrent carved out little streambeds.

It's fun to have our own creek ... even if it's only for part of a day.

The perfect setting for a historical unveiling      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

In early August, Legionnaire Keith LaMee stood up in front of 25 or so people at American Legion Post 5 in Colorado Springs, Colo., and helped introduce a new U.S. Postal Service stamp commemorating the World War I centennial.

Being able to be a part of the ceremony – the master of ceremony, in fact – meant a lot to the Paid-Up-For-Life member of The American Legion.

“I thought it was a great honor,” said LaMee, a past post commander and adjutant. “I love history. All the artifacts that were around (the unveiling) were, for the most part, my personal items. It was just the right place for this.”

LaMee, who works for the U.S. Postal Service, was able to use his contacts to bring the unveiling ceremony moved to Post 5. American Legion Family state leadership attended the ceremony, including Senior Vice Commander Dean Noechel and Sons of The American Legion Detachment Commander Ron Noakes.

The stamp, the “Turning the Tide,” was designed by USPS Art Director Greg Breeding and was based on an illustration by Mark Stutzman. The stamp features a doughboy holding a U.S. flag against a backdrop of smoke, barbed wire and biplanes flying overhead.

Post 5 was chartered in 1919 and was, to LaMee, a perfect place to unveil the stamp. “Without World War I there’s no American Legion,” he said. “It was all founded by our forefathers that serves, and it was just kind of apropos. The doughboy that they picture is an artillery officer. Our first post commander in 1919 served in the artillery. And Post 5 is the oldest Legion post in Colorado Springs.”

The stamp is now available at post offices nationwide.

  • Every weather forecast is basically: "Over the next few days, you may get rain or you may not. If you do, it might be heavy or it might be light." That's basically no forecast at all.
  • I'm still trying to track it down, but there was a cop and a mayor of a small town near Waco who was one of the first to call 911 at the Twin Peaks biker incident. I think he is now the pastor of a church in Decatur. (It certainly is the same name, I'm just not sure it is the same person.)
  • Trump hasn't tweeted "Witch Hunt" in three days. And, other than complaining that rivers in California run into the Pacific Ocean, he's been pretty calm on Twitter.
  • "As Reagor-Dykes employees are being 'placed on leave' following the dealerships’ legal troubles, workers are wondering what is the next step for them."
  • There was news yesterday of an alleged sexual assault in a bathroom in a bar/club in Dallas, and cops put out a sketch of the so-called Person of Interest. I looked up the club online and it had a photo gallery. I feel sorry for the DJ depicted in the photo gallery who certainly is not a suspect.

  • It was very weird yesterday for Southlake PD to highlight two DWI arrests of females who allegedly hit each other while driving different vehicles.  The "thread" had a bit of glee and satisfaction to it.
  • I also thought it was odd that the Star-Telegram picked up the story and called the ladies "drunk" without using "alleged."
  • Speaking of, this is a very weird Star-Telegram story. At the end of it, it lists twelve products by name (with links) that comprise this gal's make-up.  Prescotte Stokes III is the author.
  • I watched the first episode of Hard Knocks. It is easy to tell why the Cleveland Browns are so bad and the finger points at an entire coaching staff that is sleep-walking.
  • Some serious hail in Colorado Springs.
  • I wrote about Kobach's scam a few days ago. He just won the Kansas race for Republican nominee for governor a couple of days ago by only 191 votes, and his opponent has demanded a recount. Since Kobach is Secretary of State, he will oversee the recount and refuses to recuse himself.
  • Nixon walked out of the White House for the last time on this day in 1974.

Spike Lee's new movie, BlackkKlansman , is based on a true story, but the plot sounds crazy enough that you'd be excused for thinking he'd just made it up. It's about an African-American police officer, Ron Stallworth, who went undercover in the 1970s to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan ... by joining it. Stallworth was the first black officer hired by the Colorado Springs Police Department. In the film, when his chief and the mayor tell him they're hoping he'll "open things up," they don't anticipate that he'll go about that task in quite the way he chooses to do so. Looking through a newspaper at his desk one morning, Stallworth (John David Washington, sporting an impressive Afro the real Stallworth didn't have at the time) sees a Ku Klux Klan recruitment ad with a phone number. He calls it, and finds himself talking with David Duke — yes, that David Duke — the Klan's chatty, gregarious Grand Wizard, as played by Topher Grace.
