SAGE (Percipient StorAGe for Exascale Data Centric Computing) is a European Commission funded project towards the era of Exascale computing. Its goal is to design and implement a Big Data/Extreme Computing (BDEC) capable infrastructure with associated software stack. The SAGE system follows a "storage centric" approach as it is capable of storing and processing large data volumes at the Exascale regime.

SAGE addresses the convergence of Big Data Analysis and HPC in an era of next-generation data centric computing. This convergence is driven by the proliferation of massive data sources, such as large, dispersed scientific instruments and sensors where data needs to be processed, analyzed and integrated into simulations to derive scientific and innovative insights. A first prototype of the SAGE system has been been implemented and installed at the Julich Supercomputing Center. The SAGE storage system consists of multiple types of storage device technologies in a multi-tier I/O hierarchy, including flash, disk, and non-volatile memory technologies. The main SAGE software component is the Seagate Mero Object Storage that is accessible via the Clovis API and higher level interfaces. The SAGE project also includes scientific applications for the validation of the SAGE concepts.

The objective of this paper is to present the SAGE project concepts, the prototype of the SAGE platform and discuss the software architecture of the SAGE system.

A corrida, literal e figurativamente falando, pelo lançamento de carros autônomos de qualidade continua. A estratégia das companhias que querem apostar no mercado é que torna tudo mais interessante, pois enquanto umas queimam a largada e sofrem para entregar um produto de qualidade, outras se lançam na competição e, mesmo atrasadas, tentam acompanhar o ritmo. Enquanto isso, algumas esperam para observar o que é melhor e, assim, ultrapassar os adversários.

E esse é o caso da maioria das grandes montadoras. Ainda mais porque os veículos autônomos ainda são um segmento em desenvolvimento e, mais do que isso, um campo ameaçador para o atual modelo de negócios dessas grandes companhias. Todavia, a Mercedes-Benz parece ter dado o primeiro passo para abraçar essa inovação que tanto atiça o mercado de automóveis. A montadora alemã anunciou que lançará um carro sem motorista já em 2019.

Por enquanto, a empresa está se referindo ao projeto como “transporte automatizado” apenas. E, mesmo que isso soe vago, ela tem planos de começar com uma frota de sedans de luxo Classe S e hatchbacks Classe B. A ideia, a longo prazo, é projetar veículos voltados exclusivamente para condução autônoma, tais como o conceito F 015 “Luxury in Motion”, que foi divulgado há alguns anos.

A montadora alemã está negociando as particularidades do projeto e, portanto, ainda não divulgou qual cidade será a anfitriã desse programa, tampouco detalhes a respeito de quantos carros formarão a frota que se dirige sozinha. A única certeza é que haverá motoristas humanos a bordo como prevenção e também para que observem o funcionamento do sistema. Os passageiros que solicitarem o serviço por meio de um aplicativo deverão viajar de graça.

A Mercedes-Benz deve também trabalhar em parceria com a Bosch, cujo histórico procede da construção de sistemas de segurança para semiautônomos em carros de luxo; juntas, elas devem desenvolver sensores para esses veículos.

Além disso, as empresas trabalharão no desenvolvimento de computadores de bordo capazes de oferecer poder computacional equivalente a seis estações de trabalho desktop altamente avançadas em cada carro para lidar com todo o processamento de dados – isso sem contar as demandas de espaço para que as memórias não se encham, e grande consumo de energia. O supercomputador Pegasus AI, da Nvidia, deverá ser um dos alicerces desses veículos, já que consegue executar 300 trilhões de operações por segundo.

Fora tudo isso, um poderoso sistema de resfriamento precisará ser integrado para que não haja riscos quando o veículo estiver rodando a toda velocidade. Os esforços da montadora, todavia, têm cultivado várias tecnologias e parcerias necessárias para executar serviços de táxi nos últimos anos.
