Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

The unmanned spacecraft, shaped like a pod and weighing some 585 kilogrammes (1,300 pounds) at launch, will land on the moon on February 13, 2019 if all goes according to plan, organisers SpaceIL told a news conference in Yehud, central Israel. The vessel will be launched via a rocket from American entrepreneur Elon Musk's SpaceX firm and its mission will include research on the moon's magnetic field. Its first task, however, will be to plant an Israeli flag on the moon, organisers said. The project began as part of the Google Lunar XPrize, which in 2010 offered $30 million (25...
Just what was the point of Elon Musk's 'non-practical' submarine rescue effort in Thailand?      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

elon musk submarine

  • For the past two weeks, the world fixated on the rescue mission of 12 boys and their soccer coach trapped in a cave in Thailand. Officials noted that it was a life-or-death situation for the soccer team and the rescue team on the ground.
  • While Thai Navy SEALs and many volunteers worked to retrieve the boys safely, Elon Musk tweeted about his "kid-sized submarine" that the rescuers could use over the past few days.
  • Thai officials said that the submarine was "not practical," and by the time it arrived, most of the boys were out of the cave.
  • Musk has a history of using Twitter as free advertising for SpaceX, Tesla, and the Boring Company. It's possible that the submarine project served the same purpose, regardless of Musk's intentions.

Elon Musk — CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and the Boring Company — is known for not spending a cent on advertising.

Instead, as marketing consultant Sushovan Bej put it, his companies "let you and I discuss it, rave about it, hate on it, or rejoice in the spirit of going electric in a Tesla — be the catalyst to a viral and brilliant marketing campaign."

That's why it was curious when Musk spent the last four days tweeting about SpaceX and the Boring Company's efforts to build a "kid-sized submarine." Posting photos of "beautiful" caves and updates on the creation of the device, he said the Thai government could use the submarine to rescue the 12 boys and soccer coach trapped in a Thailand cave.

By the time Musk had executed his vision and arrived in Thailand to test it, however, Thai Navy SEALs had already rescued most of the boys. On Tuesday, the SEALs announced that, after days of hard work, they had retrieved the entire team and their coach. Although Musk did not aid the SEALs in their mission, a number of people on Twitter have thanked the billionaire for his efforts.

Thai officials now tell reporters that while they appreciate Musk's enthusiasm, the submarine was "not practical." Other local, expert divers have also noted that the rocket-powered machine would likely have a hard time fitting through the smallest parts of the cave (as narrow as 14 inches at one point).

So then, what exactly was the point of Musk promoting (and defending) his submarine project?

To encourage a waterfall of media coverage about his brilliant ideas? To bury recent bad press about pay inequity, accusations against a female reporter, and widespread layoffs at Tesla? To capitalize on the world's attention on the rescue? To facilitate a narrative of himself as a savior? To bump his companies' own valuation?

Musk has seen profits from his tweets before. As CNN reported in 2014, Tesla shares went up nearly 6% — totaling about $2 billion — in the week after Musk tweeted that it "was time to unveil the D and something else." The mysterious tweet may have hinted that the car company planned to reveal an all-wheel drive or dual motor version of the Model S or new driverless technology. More recently, in April 2018, Tesla shares also jumped after Musk tweeted that the company will be profitable and cash-flow positive in the third quarter, CNBC reported.

Most of the world will not remember the names of the Thai SEALs who risked their lives on the ground to save the soccer team. But they will remember Musk.

Elon Musk's Tiny "Submarine" Turned Down During Thailand Cave Rescue Mission      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Have you ever frantically designed a project over the weekend only for it to be shot down the following Monday? Well, Elon Musk and his team of SpaceX engineers feel you. In light of the flooded cave incident in Thailand, Musk put his team to work on Saturday designing a solution for the rescue mission in the form of a tiny submarine that could maneuver through the tight passages of the cave. On Saturday, Musk tweeted out the following details:

"Got more great feedback from Thailand. Primary path is basically a tiny, kid-size submarine using the liquid oxygen transfer tube of Falcon rocket as hull. Light enough to be carried by 2 divers, small enough to get through narrow gaps. Extremely robust."

Once the rescue device was complete the next day, the team tested it for a few hours before Musk got on a plane to Thailand. However, by that point, around eight of the twelve boys had already been rescued. Thai officials team deemed Musk's submarine unnecessary, as the method they were already using proved to work just fine and the third and final rescue mission had already been planned.

In terms of specs, Musk responded to the following tweet saying that the tube is only 31 cm (around 1 foot) in diameter—a few cm smaller than the cave's reported tightest points. One of the main goals of the device was to ease panic for kids with no experience navigating through tight passages.

Many people are praising Musk's humanitarian efforts, while others are skeptical of his motives, calling him out on Twitter for using the horrible situation as a PR stunt to gain global attention:

Either way, there are two morals here: One, timing is everything. And two, even Elon Musk and SpaceX—who freaking had the resources and manpower to bring a working mini submarine to life in only a day and a half and bring it halfway across the world—get rejected sometimes. Hopefully there won't be a need for a tiny rescue submarine in the future, but if there is, rest assured Batman—I mean Elon Musk—will be first to arrive on the scene.

Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Thai cave rescue saga shows how Elon Musk's narcissism gets the best of him      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Elon Musk's kid-size submarine may have gone unused. But his efforts to help with the rescue of the Thai soccer team trapped in a cave were definitely useful for anyone trying to understand what motivates his eccentric genius.

Elon Musk has literally offered to move mountains in order to help save 12 children and their soccer coach on the other side of the world.

His actions, the social media response, and his own defense of his involvement in the Thai cave saga, have prompted two big questions about the controversial inventor and mogul.

What was Elon really after in all of this? And what drives him to do the possibly maddening, certainly meddling, and often amazing, things that he does?  Read more...

Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

https://utmagazine.ru/uploads/tmp/5a54a966272ee.jpg

Kehabisan Bahan Bakar, Teleskop Pemburu Planet Milik NASA Bakal Pensiun      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Adapun tim peneliti berasal dari University of California, Riverside, dan University of Southern Queensland.

Masih Terus Mencari Jawaban

Why Elon Musk built a mini-submarine for Thai cave rescue      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Tesla and SpaceX boss Elon Musk has dismissed criticism of the mini-sub he had built for the Thai cave rescue, saying he was urged to keep working on it by a diving expert.

The SpaceX and Tesla head-honcho took to Twitter to condemn the crypto-scam currently engulfing the platform. Professional thin-person and co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, also weighed in, asking Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, to “help us”. Scam, scam, scam, scam! The scam involves bot-armies mimicking celebrities and high-profile users (including Mr Musk), in an attempt to trick ‘normies’ into sending them coin. These posts often appear in a celebrities feed following an authentic post, such as

A stirring cartoon responding to the efforts taken to rescue the soccer team trapped in an underwater cave in Thailand is gaining traction from internet users around the world.

Artistic duo SISIDEA—comprising sisters Aruni Aunhawarakorn and Jantima Manasviyoungkul from Bangkok—first conceptualized the image when news broke that the soccer team and their coach were missing, but it only materialized after the first successful rescue.

The drawing comprises 12 little wild boars and a larger one, as well as several other animals and ‘Iron Man’ swimming out of a cave. After its posting, the drawing was shared by the Royal Thai Navy on Facebook where it’s garnered 198,000 likes and 58,000 shares in less than 24 hours.

While adorable, there’s more than meets the eye because each character in the cartoon holds a special meaning. The boars refer to the boys and their soccer coach, while the white elephant in front of them represents Narongsak Osottanakorn, who is in charge of the rescue operations.

The white horse symbolizes every contributor of the rescue mission. “Everyone is a white knight,” the sisters explain.

The frogs refer to cave divers, the swallows represent Thai climbers, and the white seals are an apt wordplay on the Thai navy SEALs.

Additionally, the dog honors the K9 unit present at the scene, the dragon refers to the rescuers drilling into the cave to extract its waters, and the birds facing the animals symbolize the media.

There are also multiple homages to the countries assisting the mission. There’s a blue lion (Britain and Belgium), a kangaroo (Australia), a panda (China), a crane (Japan), a moose (Sweden), a tiger (Myanmar), a brown elephant (Laos), and an eagle (United States).

For good measure, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk appears in the image of an ‘Iron Man’ mask, since he’s built and sent a kid-sized submarine to aid the operations, with help from his engineering team.

The image isn’t all cheery, though. The single crow overlooking the situation refers to naysayers of the rescue mission.

Have a look at the meaningful illustration below.

Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

  • The four boys who were rescued from a Thai cave on Tuesday night cannot talk yet.
  • It's likely this is because they are weak and in recovery. Doctors say all 12 soccer players are in "good condition" after having been trapped in the cave for more than two weeks.
  • The first eight boys who were rescued can talk, but they can't play, doctors said.

The final four boys who were rescued from a Thai cave on Tuesday night still can't talk.

A doctor at Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital, where the 12 boys and their coach are being treated said the physical abilities of the final four boys is, understandably, yet to catch up with their teammates who left the cave on Sunday and Monday nights.

07/10 Links Pt2: The UN ignores antisemitism, de-Judaizes Holocaust; Students for Justice in Palestine Says Progress Impossible ‘So Long as Israel Exists’; Israeli spacecraft aims for historic moon landing      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Watchdog group: United Nations ignores antisemitism, de-Judaizes Holocaust
The United Nations has failed to seriously combat antisemitism and in some cases has de-Judaized the Holocaust, a Geneva watchdog group said on Monday.

UN Watch made the accusation in a report it presented at a special event at the Knesset.

Israel has long argued that the UN’s treatment of it is tantamount to antisemitism because of the body’s long record of excessively condemning Israeli actions above and beyond those of other nations.
Haley says UN could benefit from fresh set of eyes, calls out anti-Israeli bias at UN, January 19, 2017 (Reuters)

“When it comes to Jews, when it comes to Israelis, the UN has become a hostile and biased body,” said Yesh Atid head MK Yair Lapid, who chaired the Knesset event. “The organization that is meant to fight antisemitism, which is sworn to fight antisemitism, is guilty of antisemitism itself.”

The UN Watch report, presented by the group’s executive director, Hillel Neuer, said that in addition the UN has done little to tackle antisemitism even though it is tasked with combating worldwide racism, xenophobia and discrimination.

The report lauded some UN actions on antisemitism, including UNESCO’s Holocaust education program and the statements of some UN officials, including Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

But the bulk of the report protested the failure of UN officials and relevant bodies, including outgoing High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, to properly address the problem of antisemitism.

Zeid did not make a “single standalone statement” in reaction to an antisemitic event during his four years in office, UN Watch said.

He also “trivialized and de-Judaized the Holocaust,” the group said.

At Jerusalem event, terror survivor recounts police capture of friend’s killers
Kay Wilson is intimately acquainted with evil. Eight years ago on a sunny December afternoon, Palestinian terrorists brutally stabbed Wilson and her friend as they hiked a trail in a picturesque forest outside Jerusalem.

As she helplessly watched her friend Kristine Luken be murdered with a machete, Wilson made the split-second decision to play dead — a move that would end up saving her life.

Bound, gagged and stabbed 13 times, Wilson was determined not to die deep in the woods alongside Luken where their bodies could be overlooked. Somehow, she mustered the strength to walk over a kilometer through the forest on what she calls her own personal “death march” to call for help.

Her eyewitness testimony and remnants of the killer’s DNA led to the capture of Luken’s killers. They later confessed to murdering another woman, Neta Sorek, earlier in 2010.

The extraordinary story of Wilson’s will to survive, and the subsequent police investigation was the subject of an 2018 Israeli TV documentary titled “Black Forest,” directed by Hadar Kleinman Zadok and Timna Goldstein Hattab.

The 50-minute film produced by public broadcaster Kan provided a therapeutic outlet for Wilson, who years later, is still healing from the physical and emotional trauma she suffered in the grisly attack.
As Literary Award Changes Its Name to Escape Allegations of Racism, Instances of Anti-Semitism Go Unnoticed
Children’s literature news does not ordinarily make it into lead stories in the New York Times. Last week’s announcement by the ALSC (Association for Library Services for Children, part of the American Library Association) that it had changed the name of one of its most prestigious awards was an exception. The award formerly known as the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award has now been renamed the Children’s Literature Legacy Award. The ALSC reached this decision after months of debate about the psychological impact of racism in Wilder’s books on young readers. A broad-based movement to increase diverse and accurate representations of people of color and other marginalized groups has engulfed the world of children’s books. Wilder’s work, which undoubtedly includes insensitive and offensive material about Native Americans, had become a very visible target. Where do Jews come into this story?

Last year’s recipient of the Wilder Award was the distinguished African-American author and poet Nikki Grimes. Grimes is the author of many critically acclaimed works, including one which is distorted by the most blatant and lurid anti-Semitic tropes. At Jerusalem’s Gate: Poems of Easter accuses the Jewish people of venality, corruption, and hatred in the events surrounding the death of Jesus. The book closely follows the Gospels’ interpretation of these events. The high priest Caiaphas is described as “a mongrel smelling blood.” The Pharisees and Sadducees are conflated as members of the same evil elite, and Pontius Pilate is a passive and blameless victim of the enraged Jews who force him to kill the Messiah. The book is composed of poems, each one prefaced by the author’s comments and suggestions for discussion. Grimes encourages children to think creatively about the motives for killing Jesus: “Why would false witnesses agree to provide a legitimate excuse to have an innocent person crucified? My guess is money. Perhaps there were other reasons. Any ideas?” The poems are accompanied by illustrator David Frampton’s dangerously beautiful woodcuts, giving the story intense visual impact. One picture shows the Jewish leadership holding coins and other treasures, which they would supposedly risk losing should Jesus and his followers triumph.

From ‘intersectionality’ to the exclusion of Jewish students: BDS makes a worrying turn on US campuses
During the fall semester, when little was happening on the anti-Israel Hard Left on American campuses, we could have been forgiven for thinking that perhaps the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement had slowed. But as the year continued, coinciding with Israel’s 70th anniversary, the pace of BDS efforts increased and included something relatively new: efforts to mark off, isolate, and ghettoise Jews supporting Israel on campuses, while characterising Jews in ways that are deeply worrying.
BDS on Campus

Overall, the BDS movement generated some 22 campaigns on American campuses in 2017-18, two more than it did in 2016-17. This number was down from the immediate post-Gaza incursion peak years when BDS forces mounted 44 campaigns in 2014-15 and 33 during 2016-17, 77 in all. The recent period saw BDS organising 42 campaigns in two years. BDS forces claimed victory this year in 9 of the 22 campaigns it sponsored, a 41 per cent rate of success.

Late in the year, the renewed intensity of the BDS campaigns contrasted notably with the year’s beginning. If anything, campuses were still reeling from the events at Charlottesville in August 2017 and the appearance by neo-Nazis and white supremacists at the University of Virginia with swastikas, torches and disturbing signs vowing ‘Jews will not replace us’. University leaders were also preoccupied with the growing conflict over free speech involving primarily alt-Right speakers and demands for access to public fora on campuses. Richard Spencer stirred concerns by threats to sue institutions infringing on his first amendment right to speak and by actively bringing radicals to campus, threatening real violence. At the University of Florida, the governor mobilised the Florida guard.

BDS forces scored successes in November, passing divestment resolutions in several student governments; surprisingly, first at the University of Michigan (UM), where BDS had repeatedly failed until then, at Ohio State University, the University of South Florida, the University of Minnesota, New York University (NYU), George Washington University, and recently, Barnard (in a campus referendum) and the University of Oregon. Such victories were symbolic only, as university presidents and boards of trustees quickly announced they opposed BDS and would not divest university financial holdings. On the other side of the ledger, BDS was solidly defeated at the University of Maryland, Northeastern University, the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, the City University of New York, Earlham, Swarthmore, Case Western Reserve University, and the University of California at Santa Barbara.
Barry Shaw: The hypocrisy of intersectionality and the Jewish question
People with strategic antennae can detect a throwback to the Soviet inspired canard of “Zionism is Racism.” This radical left-wing anti-Israel trope raised its ugly head way back in 2001 at the UN World Conference Against Racism in South Africa where thousands of anti-Israel demonstrators and groups hijacked the event to target the Jewish state with phony propaganda including apartheid accusations.

Sadly, despite being beaten down in the United Nations, this same anti-Zionism has breathed new life and is active today on the campuses and streets of America and Britain, reaching out into support for Hamas and Hezbollah.

As it was then, it is dressed up as a universal human rights issue. The same tiresome aspersions are trotted out, and soft vacant minds of the impressionable young are hooked on a cause to which they are physically detached but to which they have been seduced to dedicate their energies. It fits their progressive upbringing. Sadly, a growing number of the newly deceived are Jewish.

In America, many have been raised by parents from the anti-war, hippie, flower power, era who, from a distance, frowned on Israel for not bringing peace to the Palestinians and, from their distant armchair, encourage their kids to become activists in an anti-Israel cause. And they do it, they claim, for the benefit of an Israel that is too dumb, and too aggressive, to see the error of our ways.

What they have yet to realize is that firstly, they are wrong, and secondly their kids have gone from being liberal to becoming the most illiberal, closed-minded, and intolerant people in the community. They exist, you see, on a higher moral plain than the rest of us. They know better
"Jihad Allowance": Views of Work in the Middle East
After the ruling class, the highest respect and wealth is given to the jihadist class or military leadership class. Otherwise, the jihadist or military class might turn against the leadership and Islamic system itself. That is one reason why the highest pensions in most Muslim countries, as in Gaza and the West Bank, go to widows, parents and children of jihadists and military retirees.

"We [the Muslim world], don't work and if we work, we don't do it professionally. We do not produce . . . and we import everything from the needle to missiles... Muhammad ordered us to excel in everything 'if you kill, do it properly, and if you slaughter, do it properly...' How come the Zionist gang has managed to be superior to us? They have become superior through knowledge and technology and work ethics." — Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Chairman of the International Union of Muslim Scholars.

Today, as Muslims are escaping their vast, poverty-stricken Islamic territories in 54 Islamic nations for the greener lands of Europe and America, Westerners seem to think they are rescuing refugees. Many times they are, but other times this is just the latest version of a story that has been repeating itself for 1,400 years.
Can Labor stamp out antisemitism as long as Corbyn is chairman?
Recently the Deputy Chairman of the Labor Party, Tom Watson, admitted that the antisemitism problem within the party has deteriorated in the past year. In a message to the Jewish Labor Movement he said the problem was not “just with individual cases of antisemitism,” but with “wider patterns of association.” Watson mentioned that he was ashamed that antisemitism was “ignored or minimized or excused” by some Labor members.

Watson’s statement begs the question of whether the party can overcome antisemitism as long as Jeremy Corbyn is its chairman. This has been doubtful for a long time. There are many indications that Corbyn is highly uninterested in frontally facing this hatred. In addition, he has for years been close to various antisemites. He also promoted antisemites to party positions when he became chairman. A series of events in the last three months show even more clearly that Corbyn is far too much part of the problem to reasonably expect the party to handle antisemitism complaints.

Labor has said that it wants to deal with the majority of the complaints by the end of July. The party appointed Gordon Nandell, a leading left-wing lawyer who is Jewish, to oversee its disciplinary process. There have since been many revelations of his links to the party’s hard left and activists involved in antisemitism issues.

Upon these disclosures, the Jewish Labor MP, Luciana Berger, asked the party’s national executive committee to review Nandell’s appointment. She tweeted: “This individual had made worrying statements on social media and was identifiably connected to organizations and individuals that seek to deny the antisemitism problem. We were ignored.” She also said that she “had no faith in how the party was going to tackle antisemitism.

In March 2018, Corbyn said that since he had become party chairman, there have been 300 complaints of antisemitism. He added that 150 people have either been expelled or resigned. Corbyn stated the backlog of complaints to be 60 cases. The Daily Mail reported, however, a backlog of 74 cases. It added that MP John Mann said he knew of another 130 complaints. One source in Labor told the paper: “Many of these cases include the most shocking and blatant antisemitism that would make even a committed Nazi blush.”
The Labour Party’s rejection of the International Definition of Antisemitism was long-planned
Nearly two months ago, Campaign Against Antisemitism called out the Labour Party’s intention to reject the International Definition of Antisemitism. By analysing the seemingly positive letter and article published by Jeremy Corbyn in April, observing what was omitted, and noting Andrew Gwynne MP’s contemporaneous comments on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show, we identified Labour’s disingenuous plans for all to see, calling it an “insult to the Jewish community”. Then, as now, the Labour Party had the gall to declare that they – not the world’s expert historians and academics nor the Jewish community – were best-placed to define antisemitism.

However, when this clearly telegraphed plan took a step further toward formal adoption, MPs lined up to decry it, with Labour frontbencher Sir Kier Starmer, on the same Andrew Marr Show, saying that Labour should implement the International Definition of Antisemitism “sharpish”. Other Labour MPs, including Chukka Umunna, Liz Kendall, Wes Streeting, Stella Creasey and Anna Turley all added their public declarations of outrage.

The junking of the definition was not done in secret: it was public. This begs the question: when the plan to carve convenient chunks out of the definition had been so clearly announced in advance, why are Labour politicians only now affecting surprise? One can applaud them registering opposition, but any politician with a significant commitment to opposing racism in their own party would surely have acted long ago: the facts, the individuals and teams working on it being easily accessible parliamentary and Party colleagues.

In only one respect was our expectation changed: in relation to so-called Holocaust inversion, the act of comparing the actions of Jews or the State of Israel to those of the Nazis, which is a part of the international definition which the Labour party has now seen fit to omit. Considering that Mr Corbyn himself publicly wrote on 26th March to a Jewish charity, saying: “Comparing Israel or the actions of Israeli governments to the Nazis…constitutes [an] aspect of contemporary antisemitism”, the brazenness of this latest move by the Labour Party is laid bare.
NGO Monitor: Take 2: Powerful NGOs, Antisemitism, and the Irish BDS Bill
In January 2018, a bill to criminalize trade in Israeli settlement goods was raised in the Irish Parliament. As previously noted by NGO Monitor, the bill was prepared in conjunction with Trocaire and Christian Aid – two powerful non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in the demonization of Israel. The bill was introduced by independent Senator Frances Black, who previously called for a boycott of all Israeli products.

The initial attempt to pass the bill ended after Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Simon Coveney noted that bill was legally problematic, appearing to contravene EU laws prohibiting “unilateral restrictions on trade.”

Furthermore, as noted by law professor Orde F. Kittrie, the bill may also breach US laws and could have consequences for American companies with Irish subsidiaries.

However, following intensive NGO lobbying and trips to Israel and the West Bank where Irish lawmakers met with radical political NGOs, the bill is being revived, and the Irish Seanad will vote on it this week (July 11, 2018).
Students for Justice in Palestine Says Progress Impossible ‘So Long as Israel Exists’
Students for Justice in Palestine at the University of California, Davis, acknowledged on Friday that it did not believe progress in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was possible “so long as the state of Israel exists.”

“The goal of Palestinian resistance is not to establish ‘love’ with those who are responsible for the suffering of the Palestinian people,” the group asserted in an essay published by the student-run California Aggie, “it is to completely dismantle those forces at play.”

SJP was responding to an op-ed by the Aggies for Israel club, which criticized a protest of its “Choose Love” campaign by anti-Zionist students.

“They held posters saying ‘Justice is our demand, Palestine is our Land,’ ‘Resistance is justified when people are occupied’ and one of the most personal ones, ‘Gofman has got to go'” — a reference to student government President Michael Gofman, a member of Aggies for Israel — the group wrote in June.

“As people shouted ‘f**k Israel,’ ‘f**k Michael Gofman’ and ‘you should have learned from Germany,’ in our faces, a question emerged: How could we have a ‘Choose Love’ campaign while people were choosing hate?” they asked. “These blatant anti-Semitic phrases go beyond any acceptable criticism of Israeli policies.”
Muslim Democrat Running for Congress Blames Israel for ‘Evil Doings’ in Gaza
A Somali American Muslim women running to replace Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) has previously accused Israel of “evil doings” in the Gaza Strip and called it an “apartheid state.”

In a November 2012 tweet, Ilhan Omar, who is currently a Minnesota state representative, said, “Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.” Her 2012 tweet came after the Israel Defense Forces launched an operation in the Gaza Strip following the launching of 100 rockets at the Jewish state.

In May, Omar responded to criticism of the 2012 tweet by accusing Israel of being an “apartheid state.”

“Drawing attention to the apartheid Israeli regime is far from hating Jews. You are a hateful sad man, I pray to Allah you get the help you need and find happiness,” she wrote on Twitter on May 28, 2018.

Omar told ABC News on Sunday that she is not antisemitic and accused her critics of “bigotry.”

“These accusations are without merit. They are rooted in bigotry toward a belief about what Muslims are stereotyped to believe,” she said, while not apologizing for her previous tweets.
Framing the topic in BBC Radio 4’s ‘Any Questions?
Presenter Jonathan Dimbleby is of course on record as saying that the BBC’s decision to uphold parts of complaints made concerning Israel-related reporting by Jeremy Bowen would “cause serious damage” to the corporation’s international standing, while describing those complaints as “lies and distortions”.

His interventions during discussion of that highlighted question are hence noteworthy.

The question from the audience member concerning the UK embassy in Israel – actually worded “why doesn’t the UK move its embassy to Jerusalem?” – came at 17:50 minutes into the programme (available here) and was immediately followed by a remark from Dimbleby:

Dimbleby: “As of course the US government has done – or Donald Trump has done…”

As was clearly stated at the beginning of the announcement concerning the relocation of the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, the decision was based on the ‘Jerusalem Embassy Act’ passed by the US Congress in 1995.
BBC News coverage of terrorism in Israel – June 2018
The Israel Security Agency’s report on terror attacks (Hebrew) during June 2018 shows that throughout the month a total of 220 incidents took place: 88 in Judea & Samaria, 6 in Jerusalem, one within the ‘green line’ and 125 in the Gaza Strip/Sinai sector.

In Judea & Samaria and Jerusalem the agency recorded 77 attacks with petrol bombs, fourteen attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs), two shooting attacks, and one vehicular attack. One stabbing attack took place in Afula.

Attacks recorded in the Gaza Strip sector included 78 attacks with petrol bombs, five shooting attacks, 8 attacks using IEDs and three grenade attacks. 29 separate incidents of rocket fire were recorded, with 76 launches.

Five people were wounded in attacks that took place throughout the month. A high-school student was stabbed in Afula on June 11th. The BBC did not produce any reporting on that attack. A member of the security forces was wounded by a petrol bomb on June 5th in Jerusalem and three members of the security forces were wounded in a vehicular attack on June 23rd near Bethlehem. Neither of those incidents was covered by the BBC News website.
UN roughs up, ejects, bans reporter from headquarters: Caught on tape
"United Nations security allegedly roughed up, tossed out and temporarily banned a reporter from its New York headquarters this week -- the latest incident in what a watchdog has described as a 'long history of harassment' against him.

Matthew Lee, who runs the online Inner City Press blog, has long been a thorn in the side of many U.N. officials with his combative and relentless style of reporting. 'ICP' puts out several lengthy stories a day about U.N. proceedings, with a particular emphasis on corruption, incompetence and lack of accountability at the international body...

And so on Tuesday, Lee hovered outside a late-night, closed-door hearing on the U.N. peacekeeping budget. Other outlets had reported that the budget had been agreed on over the weekend, suggesting a looming stalemate had been broken. But Lee's reporting suggested things might not be so clear cut.

Partial video of the incident taken on his phone shows Lee chatting with a committee member -- but it then cuts to a few minutes later when a scuffle can be heard. He claims that his shirt was torn, his computer damaged and his arm twisted by a security guard as he was trying to write a story about his conversation.

A man he identified as an assistant secretary general can be heard telling him the committee hearing is closed, though Lee said he never tried to enter the room and was just reporting near the room.

'I'm a journalist, I'm a journalist,' he can be heard yelling in the footage. 'You see what's happening here?'
Teens in Germany fire anti-Semitic insults at passing rabbi
A Chabad emissary in Offenbach, Germany, was the victim of a verbal assault on his way to synagogue this past weekend by a group of teenagers.

"They shouted 'shitty Jew' and 'Free Palestine' and other things at me," Rabbi Menachem Mendel Gurevitch wrote in a post on his Facebook page.

The incident took place Friday afternoon, when Gurevitch was on his way to pray. Gurevitch said he does not hide his Jewish identity, despite increasingly frequent anti-Semitic attacks in Europe.

"Usually, I ignore things like this, but this time I couldn't, so I decided to try and talk to them. But the more I talked, the more they shouted at me," he wrote.

This was not the first time Gurevitch has come under attack. Five years ago, he was attacked by a group of teens who started screaming anti-Semitic slurs at him. After that incident, a group of local residents organized a meeting with the assailants, and they apologized.

Gurevitch mocked the apology, calling it "bla, bla, bla."
French Jewish family told to remove mezuzah outside apartment
The company that manages an apartment complex in France has ordered a Jewish family to remove a mezuzah from the door frame.

The Foncière Bergé Corp. cited its regulations last week in a letter to the Saada family in Montpelier, in southern France, according to what appears to be a copy published on Twitter.

During a July 5 inspection of the company’s real estate, “a mezuzah was encountered on your doorframe,” Fabienne Nourigat of its rental department wrote to the family in a letter dated July 6. “We remind you that no personal object may be presented in public areas and request you move the mezuzah inside your accommodation. Thank you for your understanding.”

The Eretz news website pointed out that apartments in the same building have doormats on the external side of the door and the occupants have not been requested to remove them.
Letter by Martin Luther calling Jews 'devils incarnate' up for auction
A letter written by German theologian Martin Luther that is critical of the Jews is up for sale at an auction house in Boston.

RR Auction is selling the letter dated September 1, 1543, and written in German to fellow German theologian Georg Buchholzer.

"You have preached against the Jews and fought serious battles over that with the Margrave….And you were quite right to do so," Luther wrote in the letter, according to the translation provided by the auction house. "Stand fast and persevere!...For these Jews are not Jews, but devils incarnate who curse our Lord, who abuse His mother as a whore and Him as Hebel Vorik and a bastard, this is known for certain... You may show this letter to whomever you wish."

Luther, a leading figure in the Protestant Reformation, is referencing the Hebrew words "hevel varik," found in the Jewish prayer Aleinu: "They [non-Jews] worship vanity and emptiness."
World’s largest Hispanic Christian group joins FOZ to fight antisemitism
The Hispanic Israel Leadership Coalition (HILC) - the largest pro-Israel Hispanic Organization in the world – has joined forces with the President’s Task Force, a division of the Friends of Zion (FOZ) Heritage Center in Jerusalem, to help combat antisemitism and BDS.

The President’s Task Force is a non-political organization comprised of presidents of major Christian organizations. Its executive committee includes former governor Mike Huckabee, Dr. Ronnie Floyd, Rev. Jentezen Franklin, Dr. Robert Jeffress, and Dr. Jack Graham.

“We are proud to partner with Friends of Zion’s President’s Task Force and with its tireless founder, Dr. Mike Evans,” said Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Conference and HILC.

“The aim of our partnership is to leverage the unparalleled access and influence of FOZ within Israel, along with the formidable social media and content production capabilities to further promote pro-Israel values within the Hispanic Christian community around the world. Our message is clear: Israel, her people and her leaders have no truer friends than Hispanic Christians. Our partnership with FOZ will help ensure it stays that way for generations to come.”
German Jews call for crackdown on anti-Semitism, including among Muslims
Dozens of Jewish organizations in Germany have called on the government to crack down on anti-Semitism following a string of anti-Jewish attacks.

In an open letter signed by 38 groups, the country’s Jewish Forum for Democracy and Against Anti-Semitism (JFDA) on Monday outlined a policy statement, urging Berlin to condition funds for civil and religious organizations on them issuing public declarations distancing themselves from anti-Semitism in all its forms.

The statement called on authorities to take the experiences of attack victims more seriously and increase their investment in support projects and democracy promotion programs. It called for recognition that anti-Semitism is an “attack on the entire liberal democratic community.”

It urged the government and all state-funded groups to adopt the working definition for anti-Semitism devised by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, which categorizes some criticism of Israel as well as support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign as anti-Semitic.
Germany agrees to $88 million more for Holocaust survivors
The organization that handles claims on behalf of Jews who suffered under the Nazis says Germany has agreed to pay another 75 million euros ($88 million) to fund social welfare services for Holocaust survivors.

The New York-based Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany said Tuesday the additional money brings total funding next year to 480 million euros ($560 million), to help survivors as they grow older and more frail.

Claims Conference negotiator Greg Schneider said, “These elderly heroes deserve the recognition that increased payments and much-needed services will provide.”

Germany also agreed to increase pensions paid to 55,000 Holocaust survivors in Central and Eastern Europe, and expand eligibility for child survivors.

Earlier this year, the German government agreed to recognize some 25,000 Jewish Algerians as Holocaust survivors, making them eligible for compensation.
Israeli startup silences diseased genes of shrimp to boost their production
An Israeli biotechnology startup ViAqua Therapeutics Ltd. says it has developed a way to reduce disease and limit losses in the raising of shrimp and some fish.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, shrimp is the most valuable traded marine product in the world today, with the industry estimated a tens of billions of dollars a year. Shrimp production is growing at a rate of some 10 percent annually, one of the highest growth rates in aquaculture.

One of the major challenges facing the fast-growing aquaculture market is the prevention and treatment of viral diseases.

Disease in shrimp could have “devastating consequences,” the WWF says. When they become ill, they swim on the surface of the water rather than on the bottom of the production pond. The enables seagulls to swoop down, eat the diseased shrimp, and spread the illness by subsequently defecating on a pond a few miles away. There is a socioeconomic impact, including loss of employment, when shrimp farms — in China, and other developing countries like Thailand, Indonesia, India, and Bangladesh — are shut down due to disease.

ViAqua says it has developed a new feeding solution that is based on a biological formulation developed by the company that uses RNA molecules to inhibit gene expression. The coated particles, administered to the shrimp orally, trigger a cell reaction that disables the viral infections that attack shrimp and other aquaculture species.
JPost Editorial: RBG’s message
Ahead of US President Donald Trump’s expected announcement today of a Supreme Court nominee to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg visited Israel last week – and conveyed a wise message in her inimitable style. The 85-year-old Ginsburg, who is one of three Jews on the nine-member US Supreme Court (the others are justices Elana Kagan and Stephen Breyer), came to receive the inaugural Genesis Lifetime Achievement Award at a ceremony held in Tel Aviv’s Yitzhak Rabin Center.

Appointed by president Bill Clinton in 1993, Ginsburg is considered a liberal member of the Supreme Court, while the new justice touted by Trump will certainly be conservative, tipping the delicate balance in the body 5-4 in favor of the conservatives. In her acceptance speech, Ginsburg stressed that her Jewish identity had been central to her strong sense of justice. “I am a judge, born, raised and proud of being a Jew,” she declared. “The demand for justice, for peace, for enlightenment, runs through the entirety of Jewish history and tradition.”

A day later, before the screening of RBG – an acclaimed documentary about her life and career – at the Jerusalem Cinematheque, Ginsburg was asked how her Judaism had influenced her approach to law. She responded that at the entrance to her Supreme Court office, there is a large poster with Hebrew letters reading, “Tzedek, tzedek, tirdof – justice, justice, thou shalt pursue.”

But it was only on Friday that Ginsburg, in conversation with former Israeli Supreme Court president Dorit Beinisch at the American Center in Jerusalem Center, related directly to Trump’s nomination.
Middle East’s largest natural history museum opens in Israel
Upon entering the new natural history museum in Tel Aviv, visitors are greeted by a vivid re-enactment of the great avian migrations from Africa to Europe through northern Israel’s Hula Valley, complete with stuffed hawks, pelicans and vultures circling around the ceiling of the building’s entrance.

The 100,000-square-foot Noah’s Ark-shaped building, which houses more than 5.5 million specimens of species from around the globe, opened this week alongside the Tel Aviv University campus after more than two decades of planning.

As the biggest natural history museum in the Middle East and Israel’s national center for biodiversity studies, the Steinhardt Museum of Natural History highlights the country’s ecological diversity at the crossroads of the three continents, as well as the impact of urban development, climate change, and man-made devastation on the region’s ecosystems.

The main goal of the museum, according the curators, is to increase public awareness about the natural world and environment on a local and global scale.
Israel Sees Record Number of Tourists for First Half of 2018
Israel saw a record number of tourists in the first half of 2018, injecting billions of dollars of revenue into the Israeli economy.

According to the Israeli Ministry of Tourism, from January to June 2018 about 2.1 million tourist entries were recorded—an increase of 19 percent over the same period in 2017 (1.74 million) and 26 percent more than in 2016. Since the beginning of the year, tourism has injected more than NIS 12 billion ($3.3 billion) into the Israeli economy.

June also saw a continued rise in tourism with 310,200 entries—2 percent more than June 2017. Revenue from tourism in June reached about NIS 1.66 billion ($457 billion).

“The marketing efforts and activities that we are spearheading in the ministry are leading us to new records, as, for the first time, we have crossed the 2 million threshold for tourist entries over the course of half a year,” said Tourism Minister Yariv Levin in a statement. “I am pleased to see that the first half of the year has borne the fruit of our intensive marketing endeavors and activities around the world.”

Levin added that he predicts that the second half of the year leading into next winter will continue with record statistics as Israel sees an increase in the number of flights from Europe to the southern resort city of Eilat.
Israeli TV show getting Ron Howard-directed CBS remake
An Israeli TV show about IDF service is being adapted for US audiences – with renowned director Ron Howard at the helm.

The Yes TV show is called Ta'agad, which is an IDF acronym for a combat medic unit, and has been stylized overseas as Charlie Golf One. The US version of the show – being produced by Paramount for CBS – has been given the working title 68 Whiskey, which is the US military's code name for the same type of unit.

Ta'agad, which stars Tomer Kapon (Fauda, When Heroes Fly) and Shira Naor (Shababnikim) premiered in 2016. The show, which was renewed for a second season slated to air next year, follows the exploits of an IDF combat battalion with the Paratroopers from the battlefield to the bedroom – and even the intrigue of an illegal medical experiment. The show was nominated for eight awards from the Israeli Academy for Film and Television, but lost out on all of them.

According to Deadline, which first reported the news, 68 Whiskey "follows a multicultural mix of men and women deployed as Army medics to a forward operating base in Afghanistan nicknamed 'The Orphanage.' Together, they endure a dangerous and Kafkaesque world that leads to self-destructive appetites, outrageous behavior, intense camaraderie and occasionally, a profound sense of purpose."

The pilot will be directed by Howard, the famed Oscar-winning director behind A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13, The Da Vinci Code and many more.
Israeli spacecraft aims for historic moon landing… within months
Save the date. On February 13, 2019, an Israeli-built unmanned spacecraft is expected to land on the moon, having blasted off from Earth two months earlier, project managers said at a news conference Tuesday.

If all goes well, the SpaceIL spider-like craft will give Israel entry into the exclusive club of just three nations that have so far achieved a controlled landing on the moon’s surface.

The probe will be launched sometime in December from Cape Canaveral aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, officials said during the media event, held at an Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) space technology site in Yehud. It is scheduled to land on February 13, 2019.

The project, begun seven years ago as part of a Google technology contest to land a small probe on the moon, was conducted together with IAI.

“We will put the Israeli flag on the moon,” said Ido Anteby, CEO of SpaceIL.

Elon Musk Defends His Mini Submarine That Was ‘Impractical’ In Thai Cave Rescue      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

The world has finally let out a sigh of relief after all 12 boys and their coach from the ‘Wild Boars’ soccer team were rescued from a flooded cave in Thailand.

To aid the operations, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and his team of engineers had developed a child-sized submarine to transport the stranded individuals through the cave’s narrow passageways.

The concept and efforts, though widely applauded, had also drawn critique. According to the BBC, former Chiang Rai official Narongsak Osatanakorn, who coordinated the rescue operation, had described the vessel as “not practical for [the] mission.”

The SpaceX CEO has since shared his email correspondence with British diver and rescue team co-leader Richard Stanton, who encouraged him to build the smaller submarine.

“The former Thai provincial governor (described inaccurately as ‘rescue chief’) is not the subject matter expert,” Musk tweeted. “That would be [Richard] Dick Stanton, who co-led the dive rescue team.”

In the emails, Musk assured Stanton that “one of the world’s best engineering teams” who usually designs spacecraft and spacesuits were “working on this thing 24 hours a day.” He also said that the engineers were trying to perfect the vehicle “in a very short period of time.”

Stanton replied that Musk’s plans were “absolutely worth” pursuing, and that the submarine might be used if the rain persisted.

Stanton added, “We’re worried about the smallest lad [so] please keep working on the capsule details.”

On Tuesday, the Thai Navy Seal finally announced that the entire team had been rescued. Musk tweeted a congratulatory note, saying, “Great news that they made it out safely. Congratulations to an outstanding rescue team!”

While the mini submarine was not used in this rescue mission, Musk said it could be useful in future operations.

Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Israeli spaceship scheduled for historic landing on the moon next year      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
The Israeli organization SpaceIL and the state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) announced at a conference Tuesday that it hopes to become the first Israeli group to land a spacecraft on the moon. The spacecraft will be transferred to the US in November, before being launched in December, and plans are in place to land on the moon on February 13. If successful, Israel would become the 4th country to land a craft on the moon, after the US, the Soviet Union and China. The spacecraft, which is shaped like a round table with four carbon fiber legs, will be launched from Florida's Cape Canaveralon on a SpaceX'S Falkon 9 rocket in December, and then slingshot around the planet several times to reach the moon. Upon landing, the craft will relay photographs and collect data about the moon's magnetism for research by Israel's Weizmann Institute. "We will put the Israeli flag on the moon," said Dr. Ido Anteby, CEO of SpaceIL. "It's a small, smart spacecraft, it has a 2 meters diameter, its height is about 1.5 meters (3.2 feet), it weighs 600 kilogram, and will land on the moon at the weight of 180 kilograms." Unlike other spacecrafts, which took several days to reach the moon, SpaceIL's spacecraft will take longer. The launcher will release the spacecraft at the height of 60,000 kilometers, and to save fuel, it will enter an elliptical orbit around the Earth until it reaches the moon. According to Dr. Anteby, the landing is the most complicated part of the journey. "The spot chosen is relatively flat and the spacecraft will have eye contact with the Earth ... Once the spacecraft reaches the landing point, it becomes completely autonomous, the engines block it until it reaches the ground ... The first step will be to put up an Israeli flag on the moon," he said. The lunar mission is scheduled to last just two days after it touches down. But the SpaceIL team hopes that putting an Israeli-made module on the moon could help maintain Israel's technological momentum for years to come. ______ SpaceIL is a non-profit organization established in 2011 and was founded by 3 engineers: Yariv Bash, Kfir Damari and Yonatan Weintraub, who entered a global competition organized by Google's Lunar Xprize. Three groups from around the world originally registered for the competition, which opened in 2007. The contest was a modern international race between private groups to land an unmanned spacecraft on the moon. Within a few years, most of the competitors dropped out due to the complexities and challenging invovled, leaving only 16 teams to battle it out. Later, Google Lunar Xprize announced that a group that would not be able to sign a contract until the end of 2016 would be automatically be removed from the race. Besides SpaceIL, the finalists were companies hailing from Japan, the US, India and the international company Synergy Moon. In January of this year, the $20 million competition was scrapped by the tech giant when it became clear none of the companies would meet the deadline. However, the Israeli group contniued with its mission of historic moon landing.

The Hyperloop intends to propel passenger pods through a low-pressure vacuum tube at speeds up to 700 miles per hour. In order to encourage Hyperloop development, Musk launched a competition that would allow students and engineers to submit prototype pod designs. SpaceX then selected 30 teams to build their pods and compete at the first Hyperloop Pod Competition in Hawthorne, California.

SP also has an article about China's attempted take over of the sea routes, not just by aggressive take over of the shoals in the West Philippine sea, but by "lending" poor countries money to upgrade their port facilities, and then taking these ports over when those countries can't pay back the loans.

yes, your smart TV is spying on you.

But hey, if you have a Chinese cellphone, that has spyware in it so they can watch your moves.

The Chinese surveillenace of their people in cities makes London look like a wimp.

SP has had a couple of articles noting this "backdoor" spyware has made the US military wary of Chinese cellphones and computers, but the latest report is that the quadricopters now being used says the brass is worried these also might also be vulnerable to Chinese control.

Don't ask me: I don't have a cellphone.

but my Chinese made computer did have spyware on it, and when someone found that out and it got publicized we removed it.

Uh, build the wall?

NPR.(May 2018) notes that Mexico has a border problem with Central America, and enforces the law sometimes.

Rather than amassing troops on its border with Guatemala, Mexico stations migration agents, local and federal police, soldiers and marines to create a kind of containment zone in Chiapas state. With roving checkpoints and raids, Mexican migration agents have formed a formidable deportation force. Since the Southern Border Plan launched, Mexico has deported more than half a million Central Americans, including almost 82,000 last year, according to data from Mexico's Interior Department. Since 2015, Mexico has deported more Central Americans annually than U.S. authorities have, in some years more than twice as many.

LINK:(Crisis Group.org, May 2018)

Kidnappings have soared across the south since 2015. Not only are the border states now the main conduit for cocaine trafficked from Colombia’s Pacific coast, but violence is fuelled by the fragmentation of the once dominant Zetas and the Sinaloa Cartel, combined with the rise of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and the spread to southern Mexico of Central American street gangs, notably the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13).
The proliferation of cartels and gangs has intensified turf battles over protection rackets. Long the victims of crime while travelling north, Central Americans must now run an extended gauntlet of criminal organisations ready to kidnap, physically and sexually abuse or kill them. Gangs have even staged raids on migrant shelters.
Yet, in many border towns, locals perceive Central Americans themselves as responsible for the rise in crime, prompting a backlash, including calls for southern Mexico to build a wall of its own. Refugees and migrants face increasing discrimination and are often trapped between erratic state institutions, predatory criminals and alarmed locals.
the answer is, of course, controlled immigration, but never mind.

the best answer is to actually fight the criminals and make it safe for people to stay home, but hey, when Duterte does that, the internaional SJW get into a tizzy and try to make him out a monster.

but it worked in Colombia, so it could also work here.

And the Diplomad2.0 blog says Mexico's newly elected president is a leftist/populist who has links with Mayor Guilliani.

Tecnologia no resgate

Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

ข้อความภาษาอังกฤษของผู้ว่าณรงค์ศักดิ์ในข่าวของ BBC คือ "Even though their equipment is technologically sophisticated, it doesn't fit with our mission to go in the cave,"

Israeli spacecraft aims for historic moon landing…within months

A Complete Timeline of Elon Musk’s Fruitless Attempt to Rescue the Thai Soccer Team      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Thailand’s Navy SEALs announced that divers successfully rescued all 12 members and the coach of a youth soccer team from a cave on Tuesday. But before the the two-week saga came to an end, it had an unexpected subplot featuring billionaire CEO Elon Musk, who offered to lend his high-tech gizmos and expertise to the complex extraction mission.

The team went missing on June 23 when torrential rains flooded the cave they had been exploring after practice, making it impossible for them to leave. Two British divers found the castaways 10 days later, which triggered a massive rescue operation that involved 1,000 people and attracted international media coverage. Retrieving the team proved to be an incredibly complex task, largely due to the treacherous route the boys and their coach would have to travel to escape the cave. The path from the team’s location to the exit ran 2.5 miles, and certain stretches were as narrow as 2 feet–by–2.5 feet. Many of the boys were weak from their ordeal and did not know how to swim, much less scuba, and it took experienced divers around five hours to traverse the passage. One Thai Navy SEAL veteran died while trying to place extra oxygen tanks for the team along the way.

Musk began tweeting on July 4 about the possibility of getting involved in the mission. In response to a user asking the CEO to help, he wrote, “I suspect that the Thai govt has this under control, but I’m happy to help if there is a way to do so.” The next day he suggested that technology from his Boring Company could be useful since it “has advanced ground penetrating radar & is pretty good at digging holes.” He also pointed out that pumps equipped with Tesla’s Powerpack batteries could help to siphon water from the cave at an accelerated rate.

On July 6, Musk announced that he would be sending engineers from SpaceX and the Boring Company and continued to muse about possible solutions to the problem on Twitter, such as inserting an inflatable tube into the cave that would serve as an air tunnel or constructing “double-layer Kevlar pressure pods with Teflon coating to slip by rocks.” (Cave rescue experts previously told Slate’s April Glaser that additional high-tech pumping and drilling would not likely be of any use in this case.)

Musk ultimately settled on his approach on July 7, writing that after consulting with experts in Thailand he had decided to build a “kid-size submarine using the liquid oxygen transfer tube of Falcon rocket as hull.” The advantages of the submarine, he claimed, were that it would be light enough for two divers to carry and small enough to squeeze through narrow gaps. He posted videos of prototype tests in a Los Angeles pool a day later:

Musk was in the Thailand cave by Monday with the submarine in tow, noting that he would be donating the vehicle to the rescue operation.

The rescue squad eventually told reporters that they would be unable to use Musk’s submarine. In a statement that read as unintended commentary on a common Silicon Valley blind spot, the rescue chief Narongsak Osatanakorn said of the submarine, “Although his technology is good and sophisticated, it’s not practical for this mission.” Musk’s involvement, though ultimately unnecessary, appears to have been well-intended and did not impede the operation.

However, Musk was not content to simply let this be a complimentary story about his admirable effort to save the team. Instead, he went on to challenge the BBC’s reporting and Osatanakorn’s authority.

Osatanakorn, for what it’s worth, is both the former provincial governor and the head of the rescue operation—the two titles are not mutually exclusive. Osatanakorn was set to step down over the weekend to allow a new governor to take his place, but has reportedly become so popular as the face of the rescue effort that he’s been allowed to stay on to supervise the operation.

In the same thread, Musk went on to argue with another Twitter user and complain that the press uses the “billionaire” label as an insult—not, say, an objective descriptor of his net worth.

Pie in the sky? Warner Bros. plans to build aerial tram to Hollywood sign       Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

From the proposed Dodger Stadium gondola to an exploration of flying Ubers, the battle is on to dominate Los Angeles' skies (there's also a play for the underground — see: hyperloop, Boring Company).

The latest entrant in the quest to create our future transportation options: Warner Bros.

The idea from the company behind Harry Potter movies and Bugs Bunny: They want to build an aerial tram, dubbed "the Hollywood Skyway," according to a statement from the company. It would go from their Burbank headquarters up to the Hollywood sign.

WB's concept art shows people of all ages riding the tram, looking with wonder at... the back side of the hill, as they head up toward the sign. The ride would be around a mile long and take about five minutes, according to a Warner Bros. spokesperson.

Their pitch: Warner Bros. says they'll pay for the whole thing at no cost to the taxpayer. They presented the plan yesterday to L.A.'s Rec & Parks department and the Bureau of Engineering.

The likely cost would be around $100 million, according to a source. They would pay for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the sky tram, Warner Bros. said.

MONDAY, JULY 2

{{image:1, align:right, width:250}}

Welcome back to One Day at a Time, dears—your treasured and beloved rundown of everything that’s gone horrifically wrong in the past week, because welp, that’s just how 2018 is. But... wait. What’s this? Good news? It’s true! “After 10 days trapped in a flooded cave complex in northern Thailand, and after an enormous search effort that had transfixed Thailand... 12 boys and their soccer coach had finally been found in Tham Luang Cave on Monday,” reports the New York Times! After the miraculous survival and discovery of the boys and their coach, rescuers now face another challenge—getting them out while working against thinning air, rising water levels, and submerged passages. SO NATURALLY... Billionaire nerd Elon Musk knows just how to do it, even though no one asked him. After sending engineers from his companies Tesla, SpaceX, and the Boring Company to Thailand, Musk hopped on Twitter to brainstorm ideas, suggesting he could build “a tiny, kid-size submarine” or a nylon tube he could weave “through cave network & inflate with air like a bouncy castle.” Naturally, we’re sure Musk’s showy humanitarian gestures couldn’t possibly be intended to divert attention from recent allegations of safety violations at Tesla plants... but still. Every single one of these boys better get their own kid-sized submarine out of this deal.

TUESDAY, JULY 3

Sure, the Supreme Court is poised to destroy all of America’s progress, and yes, climate change is making the planet unable to sustain basic life... but y’know what? It’s important to find the little pleasures where you can. Like, for instance, the fact that a film-production company has been trying to secretly make a pro-life movie about Roe v. Wade... but no one wants any part of it. The film (which stars... uh... Jon Voight and Steve Guttenberg as two Supreme Court justices?) keeps losing actors! “Actors have walked away once they realized there was a pro-life tilt to the film,” notes the Hollywood Reporter, adding that the unnamed female director “quit on the first day of shooting” as other cast and crew fled, including the film’s location manager, who wrote, “I have been doing research on the movie trying to figure out who is producing and what the gist of the story is, and I finally found it, and so I am withdrawing from this project. I am a staunch pro-abortion feminist activist, and I will not be party to such horrible propaganda.” Kudos to those who have left—and to those remaining? Uh, enjoy hanging out with Steve Guttenberg, we guess.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 4

Now that we’ve all finished Googling Steve Guttenberg to remember who he is (JK! Even we didn’t bother Googling!), let’s move from Hollywood’s D-list to its A-list... and ask, “WHAT’S YOUR PROBLEM, SCARLETT JOHANSSON?” “Actress Scarlett Johansson is in hot water once again for her recent choice to play massage parlor owner Dante ‘Tex’ Gill in the upcoming mob drama Rub & Tug,” gabs Deadline. “The real-life Gill was born as Lois Jean Gill, but identified as a man—which is a detail in the role that has sparked backlash.” That’s putting it... mildly. Tweeteth #OscarsSoWhite’s April Reign, “Scarlett Johansson received considerable backlash for Ghost in the Shell, when she played a whitewashed Asian character. The movie tanked. Undeterred, she has teamed up WITH THE SAME DIRECTOR to play a trans male character in Rub & Tug.” Of course, ScarJo quickly apologized, realized the giant mistake she’d made (AGAIN) in appropriation and misrepresentation, and... no, sorry. That didn’t happen at all! “Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment,” ScarJo said in a statement to her critics. Those actors, Deadline notes, were lauded for playing transgender characters—despite not being trans themselves. Alas, ScarJo’s dismissive comeback simply doesn’t hold up. As Transparent’s Trace Lysette tweeted, “So you can continue to play us but we can’t play y’all? Hollywood is so fucked... I wouldn’t be as upset if I was getting in the same rooms as Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett for cis roles, but we know that’s not the case. A mess,” and added, “Not only do you play us and steal our narrative and our opportunity, but you pat yourselves on the back with trophies and accolades for mimicking what we have lived.” For those keeping score, that’s Lysette 1, Johansson 0, and... all right, Hollywood. SHUT IT ALL DOWN. YOU’RE DONE! (Keep making GLOW, though. We like GLOW.)

THURSDAY, JULY 5

Darlings, it’s with a heavy and joyful heart that we share the following news: Scandal-tastic EPA Chief Scott Pruitt has resigned! Regular One Day readers recognize Pruitt as the swampiest of Trump’s swamp monsters whose crimes against taxpayers include taking unwarranted first class flights, ordering his staff to pick up his dry cleaning, fancy moisturizer, and a used mattress from a Trump hotel (ewwwwwwww), and attempting to finagle his wife a Chick-fil-A franchise. These ka-razy flights of corrupt fancy often overshadowed Pruitt’s destruction of environmental protections, such as encouraging Trump to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, dismantling Obama-era regulations, and kicking scientists off EPA advisory panels in favor of his corporate pals. In short, HE IS A VERY BAD DUDE. And while he was a favorite of Trump and many conservatives, the sheer magnitude of his epic and bizarre scandals ultimately led to Pruitt’s well-deserved demise. But for those who hate the environment, polar ice caps, and—you know—breathing, don’t worry! Pruitt’s EPA successor, Andrew Wheeler, is expected to continue destroying the world in his behalf—but with less emphasis on obtaining moisturizers and soiled mattresses. (So long, Scott! Say hi to Sean Spicer and Omarosa!)

FRIDAY, JULY 6

{{image:2, align:left, width:250}}

Speaking of attempts to drive the entire Trump administration out of town, public heckling of the president’s team of criminals is reaching an all-time high! Recently, spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Homeland Security’s Kirstjen Nielsen had very sad dining experiences thanks to some hilarious taunting from protesters—but the fun continues! According to the Washington Post, Goblin Advisor Kellyanne Conway has been booed and hissed on the street and at grocery stores and baseball games. Meanwhile, Racist Vampire Stephen Miller recently ordered sushi from a restaurant—but after getting heckled by the staff, he pitched a hissy fit and threw his dinner away. Even Soul-Eaters Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump aren’t immune from public ridicule, and have been forced to attend spin classes in the dark to avoid the jeering of onlookers. Poor babies, hee-hee-hee. NICE WORK, TEAM HECKLE! And don’t forget to taunt Mike Pence, Jeff Sessions, Betsy DeVos, Steven Mnuchin, and especially Mitch McConnell (who loves being reminded he looks like a turtle).

SATURDAY, JULY 7

For those who miss old-timey, non-political gossip, hold on to your wigs: JUSTIN BIEBER IS ENGAGED. TMZ broke the news that the mop bucket-peeing pop star turned evangelist/boring person proposed to current gal pal Hailey Baldwin in public at a restaurant in the Bahamas, after his security team told everyone to pocket their cameras because “something special was about to happen.” Unfortunately, Hailey said yes, robbing us of our greatest joy, which is watching public proposals go horribly wrong. No word yet on a wedding date, or if Justin will be shaving his wispy pornstache. “Yes, yes, yes—BUT!” you squeal impatiently. “What about his former love Selena Gomez?” Good question, dolls! According to a gabby pal speaking on the down low to Us Weekly, Selena heard all about the engagement and “does not care.” Obviously we can interpret this in two ways: (1) she cares very, very, very much, or (2) she’s breathing a HUGE sigh of relief that’s she’s not the future Mrs. Pornstache. Stay tuned for more exciting details on this engagement that will undoubtedly hit the guardrail, fly over the cliff, and explode in a magnificent ball of flames. (Like maybe by next Thursday?)

SUNDAY, JULY 8

And while Americans have been doing an admirable job of publicly humiliating Trump’s cadre of crooks (see Friday), we still have much to learn from the masters of snide insults: the British. As you may have heard, Brit PM Theresa May invited Donald Trump to Britain for a visit starting July 12—a move that outraged most of the country... because they are a decent, moral people. Rest assured, however, there will be protests aplenty in London, including, according to the New York Times, the recently approved flight of a blimp depicting Trump as a diapered, bawling baby. (It truly is an uncannily accurate representation.) London Mayor Sadiq Khan—who’s previously brawled with Trump on social media—took one look at artist Leo Murray’s plan to greet the president’s arrival by flying “Trump Baby” over the city, and approved it on the spot. While most of the British Empire thinks this blimp is a pretty hilarious idea, Nigel Farage, anti-immigrant former leader of the UK Independence Party, begged to differ. “This is the biggest insult to a sitting US president ever,” he wrote on Twitter. Did you hear that, America? It’s time to up our game! (How much would it cost to launch an anti-Trump billboard the size of a football field into orbit?)

GAO-18-476, NASA Commercial Crew Program: Plan Needed to Ensure Uninterrupted Access to the International Space Station, July 11, 2018      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
What GAO Found Both of the Commercial Crew Program's contractors, Boeing and Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX), are making progress finalizing designs and building hardware for their crew transportation systems, but both contractors continue to delay their certification milestone (see figure). Certification is the process that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will use to ensure that each contractor's system meets its requirements for human spaceflight for the Commercial Crew Program. Commercial Crew Program: SpaceX and Boeing's Certification Delays as of First Quarter Calendar Year 2018 Further delays are likely as the Commercial Crew Program's schedule risk analysis shows that the certification milestone is likely to slip. The analysis identifies a range for each contractor, with an earliest and latest possible completion date, as well as an average. The average certification date was December 2019 for Boeing and January 2020 for SpaceX, according to the program's April 2018 analysis. Since the Space Shuttle was retired in 2011, the United States has been relying on Russia to carry astronauts to and from the International Space Station (ISS). Additional delays could result in a gap in U.S. access to the space station as NASA has contracted for seats on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft only through November 2019. NASA is considering potential options, but it does not have a contingency plan for ensuring uninterrupted U.S. access. NASA's certification process addresses the safety of the contractors' crew transportation systems through several mechanisms, but there are factors that complicate the process. One of these factors is the loss of crew metric that was put in place to capture the probability of death or permanent disability to an astronaut. NASA has not identified a consistent approach for how to assess loss of crew. As a result, officials across NASA have multiple ways of assessing the metric that may yield different results. Consequently, the risk tolerance level that NASA is accepting with loss of crew varies based upon which entity is presenting the results of its assessment. Federal internal controls state that management should define risk tolerances so they are clear and measurable. Without a consistent approach for assessing the metric, the agency as a whole may not clearly capture or document its risk tolerance with respect to loss of crew. Why GAO Did This Study In 2014, NASA awarded two firm-fixed-price contracts to Boeing and SpaceX, worth a combined total of up to $6.8 billion, to develop crew transportation systems and conduct initial missions to the ISS. In February 2017, GAO found that both contractors had made progress, but their schedules were under mounting pressure. The contractors were originally required to provide NASA all the evidence it needed to certify that their systems met its requirements by 2017. A House report accompanying H.R. 5393 included a provision for GAO to review the progress of NASA's human exploration programs. This report examines the Commercial Crew Program, including (1) the extent to which the contractors have made progress towards certification and (2) how NASA's certification process addresses safety of the contractors' crew transportation systems. GAO analyzed contracts, schedules, and other documentation and spoke with officials from NASA, the Commercial Crew Program, Boeing, SpaceX, and two of NASA's independent review bodies that provide oversight. What GAO Recommends GAO is making five recommendations, including that NASA develop a contingency plan for ensuring a U.S. presence on the ISS and clarify how it will determine its risk tolerance for loss of crew. NASA concurred with three recommendations; partially concurred on the recommendation related to loss of crew; and non-concurred with a recommendation to report its schedule analysis to Congress. GAO believes these recommendations remain valid, as discussed in the report. For more information, contact Cristina T. Chaplain at (202) 512-4841 or chaplainc@gao.gov.
