Expect smart solutions, cutting-edge products and revolutionary concepts during the upcoming edition of Speciality & Fine Food Asia (SFFA) and Restaurant, Pub & Bar Asia (RPB Asia). Both trade shows return for their second year from 17 – 19 July 2018 at Suntec Singapore and are bringing together major F&B, foodservice, hospitality and retail players to discuss the issues facing the industry, how innovation plays a part in ensuring sustainability, and future trends that will impact the way we eat, dine, and live.
Investor Pitching Series
SFFA has launched a brand-new Investor Pitching Series to provide a practical springboard for companies with exciting, innovative ideas to pitch their concepts and products to a panel of judges comprising F&B owners, retailers, hoteliers and investors, for real-time feedback. The Series is split into two tracks – Innovative F&B Products and Productive Business Solutions for the F&B Industry, the latter designed in collaboration with RAS in order to solicit business and product proposals that will address real-life challenges faced by the F&B industry and enable them to harness new technologies, processes or products to elevate their businesses above the global competition, differentiate their offerings and thrive in the long term. Over 10 finalists will be invited for a boot camp where they can exchange ideas and gain tips from industry experts before delivering their pitches to the judges on 17 & 18 July at SFFA.
e2i’s new ULeap F&B mobile modules
SFFA 2018 will also see the launch of e2i’s new F&B mobile modules on ULeap, a mobile learning app, for quick, bite-sized learning on the F&B industry. “To ensure the growth of Singapore’s F&B industry, e2i is pleased to work closely with SFFA and RPB Asia to provide a dedicated platform for industry players to learn from each other, identify new ways of doing things and create opportunities for working partnerships,” said Mr Gilbert Tan, CEO of e2i.
“In addition, e2i will be launching bite-sized learning modules on our ULeap mobile app dedicated to the F&B sector to facilitate greater learning. We also look forward to forming partnerships with the industry players here today as well to raise their training capabilities via skills upgrading access and opportunities for their workers.”
Fine Food Live
A core component of SFFA, Fine Food Live is the mainstage where chef demos, panel discussions, and more will take place. Chef Isaac Mchale of Michelin-starred The Clove Club – also the highest ranked UK restaurant on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants – will be headlining the show for his first official visit to Singapore. Underscoring the show’s focus on sustainability, Mchale champions the very best of British produce, crafting elegant dishes incorporating inspiration from across the globe. Mchale will present two cooking demos and take part in a panel discussion ‘The Fine Art of (Conscious) Dining’.

They will explore the definition of conscious dining and how that fits into the fine dining space.
There will be a total of four panel discussions, thoughtfully designed for solutions-driven discourse among prominent industry thought leaders. Other topics are ‘Global F&B Outlook’, ‘Going Digital’ and ‘From Farm to Kitchen’, that will see representatives from Chope, DHL, Edelman, Ernst & Young, GrabFood, KPMG, Zenith Global and more take the stage.
Always a star attraction are the chef demonstrations that will happen throughout the day. This year, presenting chefs include renowned cookbook author, Christopher Tan, Javad Ahamad from Punjab Grill, and Alexander McKinstry from Viceroy Bali. Chef Neo Jun Hao, the newly-minted winner for Singapore’s Disciples Escoffier Young Talent – the culinary competition for young chefs under the age of 25 – will be conducting his live practice run at the Show before representing the country at the Asia Finals in Hong Kong this September.
At RPB Asia, Centre Stage will be a flurry of activity as the Show hosts two prestigious industry awards – the inaugural Asia Food Innovation Awards organised by FoodBev Media and theBartender Invitational 2018 organised by The Bar Awards. |The New Vid Economy: Making A Living From Crowdfunded Game Analysis Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache|
Almost four years ago, Mark Brown posted a YouTube video on adaptive soundtracks in games. The piece, snappily edited and confidently narrated, could have stood alone as a neat look behind the curtain at the tricks used by designers when creating a musical score that reacts to the player’s actions. However, the quality of Mark Brown’s first video served a larger purpose: a statement of intent. More than 90 videos and 450,000 subscribers later, Game Maker’s Toolkit has proven itself to be a wide-ranging, insightful, and consistent source of game analysis on YouTube.
From the feeling of Kratos’ axe to the secrets of Resident Evil 4’s difficulty system, Game Maker’s Toolkit has remained one of the most popular game-analysis channels on YouTube. A look into The Legend of Zelda turned into an extensive side-project called “Boss Keys,” which went over virtually every title in the series and developed an intricate mapping system to describe the layout of each dungeon. A deep dive on BioShock’s Fort Frolic became a meditation on what creates effective level design.
Brown’s videos are now his full-time job. But unlike massive streamers such as PewDiePie or Ninja, his subscriber count isn’t what keeps him afloat; instead, about one percent of his viewership provides his income through the crowdfunding site Patreon.
Even for a highly popular channel, making the jump to an entirely crowd-funded salary was an intimidating prospect for Brown. “I thought about if my Patreon was at the same level as my current salary, then maybe I could quit,” he says. “But then the thing about Patreon is it fluctuates so much … so I decided if it was double my salary then I would quit my job. And that was what happened.”
Brown is the highest-earning game-analysis creator on Patreon. Earning more than $9,100 a month (or just shy of $100,000 a year after the site takes its cut), he’s able to devote all his regular working hours to his channel. But that’s a luxury most creators can’t afford.
Even in dog years, the game-analysis scene on YouTube isn’t old enough to drink yet. There are outliers; channels like Super Bunnyhop and Errant Signal have been producing well-researched content for more than half a decade. But the format has only truly flourished since 2015 or so. Channels like Joseph Anderson, Turbo Button, and Writing on Games have all risen to relative prominence in the past three years.
In 2018, these channels are ubiquitous (I’m subscribed to 63 at the moment), and most have a familiar formula. A particular game mechanic or story beat is chosen at the beginning of the video and analyzed in detail, almost always by a man, typically over subdued electronic beats and footage of the relevant game. Successful channels sometimes have gimmicks – NakeyJakey talks directly to the camera while balancing on an exercise ball – but most stick to the established format.
Predictability doesn’t lead to an easy production, however. A far cry from sprawling Let’s Plays or daily streams, a single video essay can take weeks or months to complete. Sometimes this is reflected in the video length, like the scholarly Noah Caldwell-Gervais, who routinely churns out 30-50 pages of analysis and couches them in multiple-hour videos. More often though, it’s because tight editing and delicate argumentation are required for even a short video.
“One thing you become very aware on YouTube, as compared to writing, is audience retention, which is basically if viewers are just getting bored they'll turn off the video,” says Brown. “And you get very in-depth stats on the exact second people get bored …[I] sort of guide them by the hand through the whole video experience.”
Because even the most prolific analysis channels can only manage to put out a handful of videos a month, living off YouTube’s own monetization is basically out the question. The site provides fractions of a cent per view, provided each viewer watches an ad before the video. This can be profitable for lifestyle vloggers, but not for the previously mentioned creators. They simply don’t get the views required to secure a livable income.
Therefore, it’s vital that viewers make it to the end of the video, because that’s when the creator can make their final request. “Thanks for watching,” they all say in so many words, “and consider supporting me on Patreon.”
Ian Danskin’s first analytical video for his channel, Innuendo Studios, was a surprise smash hit. The video, “This is Phil Fish,” is a 20-minute long thoughtful look at the perils of internet success and notoriety, viewed through the context of the (in)famous Fez developer Phil Fish. He contrasts the fame of internet celebrities with bands, stand-up comedians, and cat videos. He reckons with the bizarre and seemingly random phenomenon that is digital prominence. He psychoanalyzes Fish, and then disregards his own analysis as exactly the same kind of armchair psychology as everyone else that pollutes message boards and comments sections.
The words are oddly fitting, given the video’s meteoric rise.
“The first day, it got 40 views or something.” Danskin says, “and then I went to bed and I woke up and it had 30,000. And then it had 90,000.”
“This is Phil Fish,” originally uploaded in 2014, is almost the most popular video on Danskin’s channel. It now has 960,000 views. Over the next 4 years, Danskin has uploaded 32 videos on games, pop culture, and politics (often inseparably intertwined). His most complete work is a 6-part series called “Why Are You So Angry,” which deals with the inciting events, rhetorical strategies, and fallout from the anonymous masses behind GamerGate.
Danskin makes about $2,700 a month from Patreon, a little more than a quarter of the intake of Game Maker’s Toolkit. But even getting to that level was a wild ride. Last October, Danskin released a video called “The Future of Innuendo Studios,” in which he laid out two potential courses for the channel; in effect, whether he could make enough money to produce content full time or not.
“Freelancing comes in waves … so I’m still inconsistent.” said Danskin last year. “And inconsistency makes people not want to back you on Patreon, which means I have to keep freelancing, which keeps me inconsistent. And we see how we get stuck in a loop.”
In the course of about a week, the money he was making from Patreon tripled.
“My brain kind of shut down,” he says. “You tell yourself, ‘Oh, you gotta’ do this the hard way. You’ve just gotta’ put in the work and your Patreon goes up little by little.’ ... And then you hit a point where you’re like, ‘Maybe if I just asked.’”
“The Future of Innuendo Studios” has a fraction of the views of one of Danskin’s more content-heavy videos, but it did the trick: His channel is now his primary source of income.
“I’ve lived pretty broke most of my adult life,” he says. “This is more money than I’ve ever earned.”
As time goes on, the number of these channels makes it harder for any single one to stand out. Mathew Dyason started Game Score Fanfare a little over a year ago, and has built a healthy backlog of astute, emotional videos on the power of game music. Currently, he earns less than $400 a month from the channel.
“I started the channel basically because I was miserable in my work,” says Dyason. “I quit my job, and Game Score Fanfare was the project that I gave myself.”
His channel has 37,000 subscribers. It’s a respectable number, but many of his videos struggle to reach that number of views. He’s had a couple of breakout hits: A video on the musical styles of underwater levels has several hundred thousand viewers, and another on Undertale’s instrumentation choices is approaching that. Despite those successes, however, Dyason’s general viewership and Patreon levels remain low – where about one percent of their subscribers subsidize Brown and Danskin, Game Score Fanfare’s Patreon supporters are closer to a half of a percent of viewers – nowhere near enough to live off.
Dyason’s channel is also far younger than the other two, and perhaps just needs a little more time to cement its value in viewers’ minds. But maintaining a consistently high level of quality and output means a time commitment that wouldn’t be sustainable with a day job.
“In the early days, it would take upwards of 100 hours to make one of those videos,” he says, laughing. “It’s probably come down from then.”
The raw time that goes into creating each video is mentioned by everyone; it’s something that separates them from the multiple-uploads-a-day type of YouTubers. “However much work [people] think it is, it’s probably more,” Danskin says, also referencing 100 hours per upload.
Danskin hand-animates dozens of frames for each of his videos. In a recent video on the music of Fisherman’s Horizon in Final Fantasy VIII, Dyason had to capture footage from the appropriate part of the game, which happens to be about 20 hours into the main story. Brown mentioned that in a Game Maker’s Toolkit on the Souls-like genre, he had to record footage from about 70 different games. What sounds like hyperbole is actually an understatement; the video has 86.
Time commitments are far from the only issues on these creator’s minds, however. There’s an insecurity inherent to living off the continuing existence of a website and the whims of its users.
Last year, and without warning, Patreon banned a large number of users who provided sexually explicit content to their backers. Given the ongoing legal struggles between publishers, creators, and platforms, some creators worry that game content could be on the chopping block. Nintendo could claim copyright on any footage of their games, or YouTube could stop allowing links to Patreon.
“You live in fear,” Danskin laughs. “There’s all sorts of things that can shoot you in the foot.”
Well-known personal brands like Game Maker’s Toolkit will likely survive a platform upheaval. Brown has said that he’s now giving talks at universities, and he’s considering writing a book. But for countless smaller channels, being hosted on a well-trafficked site is the only way they’re staying afloat. And even then, no one seems to know how YouTube’s algorithms work. Some videos, like Dyason’s discussion of underwater themes, might spend days on the site’s front page, while others weren’t promoted altogether.
Despite the insecurity, there are reasons why these creators stick with their work. They don’t have bosses telling them what games to make videos on or companies giving them specific audience goalposts to hit.
“[My backers] are just very supporting about whatever I want to do,” says Brown. “No one is making ultimatums.”
Game Maker’s Toolkit and Game Score Fanfare have both focused just as much on smaller indie titles as on AAA releases, despite the content’s theoretically smaller audience. One of Brown’s best videos discusses how to build a great detective game and includes lessons from tiny titles like The Shivah and aging releases like Discworld Noir.
Danskin has pivoted away from games. In the past few months, he’s released several videos in a series called “The Alt-Right Playbook,” a deconstruction of the rhetorical strategies of internet abuse and radicalization. He hasn’t left games completely behind though; in the middle of this series, he took a break to publish a charming piece on the design and themes of The Secret of Monkey Island.
One of the phenomena defining this era of content on the internet is that viewers attach themselves to personalities as much as the work they produce. Millions of people don’t watch PewDiePie because they’re fans of his horror-game-of-the-week; they do it because they’re fans of him. This loyalty allows crowdfunded creators to experiment and branch out, expanding from the subject matter they originally sold themselves on.
The career is a weird dichotomy; creation is done in almost complete solitude, and then released to be enjoyed or critiqued by tens of thousands. Brown calls himself a “socially awkward introvert,” but his livelihood depends on his audience’s attachment. From Danskin’s first video, he’s been wary of success.
“I really, really don't want my audience to be overly invested in me as a person,” he says. But in this genre of content, that’s almost unavoidable. In retrospect, it’s no surprise that his funders tripled after “The Future of Innuendo Studios.” It was a video in which he dropped the veneer of professionalism, let the audience see the man behind the curtain, and gave them the chance to put emotional stakes in his success.
Mark Brown wrote for more established gaming outlets like Pocket Gamer, and Ian Danskin freelanced and animated. Mathew Dyason studied to be a doctor. But with crowdfunded videos, they’ve each found, at least temporarily, where they want to be.
“Even though things should be much more stressful because I'm not making nearly as much money and kind of digging into savings, I'm just so much happier,” Dyason says. “It's made me realize the importance of being happy.”

|Here's Why Right-Wingers Are So Threatened by Hearing Foreign Languages in the Trump Era Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache||
In many countries, studying foreign languages in public school systems is not only encouraged—it is mandatory, which is why so many Swedish, German, Norwegian and Dutch high school students have learned to speak English fluently even though it isn’t their native language. But among many right-wing Republicans in the U.S., being monolingual is considered a badge of honor. And in the Trump era, some ugly racial incidents demonstrate that speaking a language other than English in public can be met with verbal abuse.
In May, New York City-based attorney and strong Trump supporter Aaron Schlossberg went into a xenophobic anti-immigrant tirade in a Mid-town Manhattan restaurant, the Fresh Kitchen, when he overheard an employee speaking Spanish with two of the customers. Angrily, Schlossberg ranted, “My guess is they’re not documented; so, my next call is to ICE to have each one of them kicked out of my country. If they have the balls to come here and live off of my money—I pay for their welfare, I pay for their ability to be here—the least they can do is speak English.”
More recently on July 4, a Petaluma, California man named Larry Lappin showed his ignorance when he heard the family of his neighbor, Ivette Celedon—a third-generation U.S. citizen of Mexican descent—enjoying some Latin music in their backyard. Lappin was furious; as he saw it, listening to music that was performed in Spanish on the 4th of July was disrespectful and unpatriotic. And he angrily confronted them, insisting they had no right to “disrespect my fucking country” by listening to Spanish-language music on America’s Independence Day.
Lappin later apologized after a smartphone video of his rant went viral. But he certainly wasn’t the first American xenophobe to feel threatened by the use of Spanish in public, and he won’t be the last. To some racists, using any language other than English in the U.S.—even as a secondary or tertiary language—is akin to burning the flag.
Democrat Barack Obama found out that out during his first presidential campaign in 2008, when Bill Bennett and other knuckle-dragging Republicans were deeply offended because he asserted that foreign-language study should be a much higher priority in American schools. Obama stressed that although immigrants to the U.S. should be able to speak English as well as possible, he believed that Americans would be much better off from an education standpoint if they could achieve fluency in Spanish, French and other languages.
Obama asserted, “I agree that immigrants should learn English. But instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English—they’ll learn English—you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish. You should be thinking about how can your child become bilingual. We should have every child speaking more than one language.”
The president-to-be also asserted, “It’s embarrassing when Europeans come over here. They all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then, we go over to Europe—and all we can say is ‘Merci beaucoup.’”
Nothing Obama said was even remotely offensive. In fact, Obama was spot on: achieving fluency in two or more foreign languages would be great for American students from an educational standpoint just as Dutch students benefit when they’ve achieved fluency in English and German.
But xenophobia runs deep among far-right wingnuts, who see the use of Spanish, Mandarin and other foreign languages in public as a threat to the English language. In 2012’s Republican presidential primary, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich ran an attack ad in South Carolina that lambasted Mitt Romney for being proficient in French. According to Gingrich’s ad, Romney’s French-speaking skills meant that he didn’t deserve the GOP’s nomination (which, of course, Romney received anyway before losing to President Obama in the general election).
Fear of foreign languages is one thing that Republicans often have in common with fascist dictators like Italy’s Benito Mussolini in Italy and Spain’s Francisco Franco. In Spain, Franco was bitterly opposed to Spaniards learning any language other than Spanish; speaking Catalan in the streets of Barcelona was illegal under the Franco regime. Mussolini, similarly, wanted Italians to speak Italian exclusively—and this type of hyper-nationalism is alive and well among right-wing Americans like Schlossberg and Lappin who become enraged when they hear a language other than English spoken in public.
Although Trump is married to a Slovenian woman, his supporters love the aggressive hyper-nationalism he has championed. And when Latinos are harassed or abused merely for having private conversations in Spanish in New York City or Petaluma, California, it is a symptom of Trumpism and the type of fearful xenophobia he has helped create.
Ideally, foreign-language study in the U.S. should be mandatory and start as early as kindergarten just as studying English from an early age is mandatory in parts of Europe. Spanish should be a requirement, given the language’s importance—with studying German, French and other languages encouraged as well. There is no reason why, as Obama suggested, American students shouldn’t be able to graduate from high school fluent in two, three or more languages.
The U.S. is in no danger whatsoever of losing its status as a predominantly English-speaking country. But encouraging American students to achieve fluency in Spanish and other foreign languages would certainly benefit them from an educational and employment standpoint—even it does trouble some conservatives quite deeply.

Another horror joint, it has an unsettling new trailer, complete with a floating woman holding what appears to be a severed goat head. You know, just in case the title didn’t tip you off to the evil lurking within. Check it out below.Read more »

|Exploring the Association of Hypertension With Risk for Depression: Evidence for Tamed Neurobehavioral Arousal Versus Central Emotional Dysregulation Cache Translate Page Web Page Cache||Depression is an established predictor of adverse cardiovascular disease outcomes. Less is known about cardiovascular risk factors as predictors of depression. In this issue of Psychosomatic Medicine (2018;80:508–514), Patel et al. report data indicating that pre-existing hypertension may be inversely associated with the atypical but not typical form of depression. We highlight here the strengths and limitations of the article and discuss the findings in light of research linking blood pressure and emotion regulation. In general, evidence suggests that higher blood pressure is associated with reduced expression of negative emotions and pain. Two prominent models of interaction have been proposed and supported by epidemiological and experimental research: one assumes that elevations in blood pressure lead to reduced arousal and pain sensitivity through baroreceptor activation and possibly additional afferent mechanisms. Operant conditioning may then result in (chronic) hypertension. The other one posits that impaired emotion processing as indicated by dampened emotion recognition may lead to disinhibition of hypothalamic centers and thereby result in sustained increases in blood pressure. These models are described in context of the current literature and open research questions are formulated.|

Former UFC featherweight champ Conor McGregor turns 30 on July 14, and Lithuanian artist Edgar Askelovic created a life-size, hyperrealistic sculpture of McGregor to celebrate the occasion. Askelovic, also known by his Instagram handle, Aspencrow, worked with multiple materials, including marble and clay, to depict McGregor emerging from a block of stone.
The statue weighs in at around 100kg (220lbs) and is worth more than $58,000, according to Yahoo Sports.
There are three versions of the work, which was inspired by Classical and Renaissance-era art. Two will be displayed, then sold at London's JD Malat Gallery, and the third will be gifted to McGregor.
“To create the piece, I looked back to antiquity, when athletes were immortalized in sculptures as gods,” Askelovic explained to the Evening Standard. “I combined some details from a Michelangelo statue with modern day graffiti to capture the present day’s warrior sensibilities.”
Askelovic has been sharing photos and videos of his work on the piece via Instagram, and it's downright breathtaking to watch him capture the minute details in his sculptures. Check them out below, and follow Askelovic on Instagram at @aspencrow.

As part of the November 24th Vic election campaign I have a petition I want to bring before the Opposition Leader Matthew Guy. I believe Matthew will be the next premier of Victoria and so I am petitioning him as I raise the issues of Employment, Crime and Education in Dandenong. I am also seeking money for my campaign. I don't have party resources, and so my campaign is on foot, and on the internet. Any money I receive that is not spent on the campaign will go to Grow 4 Life. I am asking questions like "What do you love about Dandenong?" and "If you could change something in Dandenong to make it better, what would it be?" I'm not limiting the questions to state issues. I'm happy to discuss anything, and get things done.
I am a decent man and don't care for the abuse given me. I created a video raising awareness of anti police feeling among western communities. I chose the senseless killing of Nicola Cotton, a Louisiana policewoman who joined post Katrina, to highlight the issue. I did this in order to get an income after having been illegally blacklisted from work in NSW for being a whistleblower. I have not done anything wrong. Local council appointees refused to endorse my work, so I did it for free. Youtube's Adsence refused to allow me to profit from their marketing it. Meanwhile, I am hostage to abysmal political leadership and hopeless journalists. My shopfront has opened on Facebook.

An Agence France Press release has it that President Obama's policies in Iraq have born fruit. As a service to my readers, I'll include pictures of Obama's success. AFP hopes similar success can be achieved in Syria. It probably can.
Some things should not happen, but they do. Kevin Rudd as PM was highly lauded for apologising to Australian Aborigines. It was an empty gesture, but an attempted travesty as he moved to end the intervention in the North of Australia saving lives of Aboriginal peoples. Aboriginal people are suffering from left wing compassion which seems to promote criminal and decadent behaviour. So that Aboriginal children have got high levels of sexually transmitted diseases. Drunken behaviour and dysfunctional families characterise what has become a cargo culture. Rudd effectively apologised for early welfare groups that tried to help foundlings and the dispossessed. Rudd referred to a myth of a stolen generation in which very few have been identified who were stolen from their parents to be raised by the state. It was an empty gesture of Rudd, but he is still highly lauded for it.
It is apparent that Turnbull can not achieve anything worthwhile as PM, except further humiliation. So he must be looking for a note on which to finish so as to define his term. Turnbull is looking for a Rudd like empty gesture. Same sex marriage could be that. A plebiscite is the policy which the Liberals took to the last election, with no back up plan, and the senate won't allow it because many independents, and the ALP and Greens, feel discussion for such a plebiscite might mean that the plebiscite fails. Pesky democracy. So now a Lib backbencher, possibly with Turnbull's encouragement, is threatening to cross the party floor and move for a parliamentary vote without a plebiscite or discussion. Personally, I don't feel government should be involved with people's sex lives where consent is achieved, but I also want protection for churches which act on conscience, something a members bill might not do. There are lots of legal things I would never do. An empty gesture like Rudd's for which Turnbull can point as a crowning achievement. It is probably too late for Turnbull to bear a child while in office.
138, Emperor Hadrian died after a heart failure at Baiae; he was buried at Rome in the Tomb of Hadrian beside his late wife, Vibia Sabina. 988, the Norse King Glun Iarainn recognised Máel Sechnaill II, High King of Ireland, and agreed to pay taxes and accept Brehon Law; the event is considered to be the founding of the city of Dublin.
In 1212, the most severe of several early fires of London burned most of the city to the ground. 1499, the Portuguese explorer Nicolau Coelho returned to Lisbon, after discovering the sea route to India as a companion of Vasco da Gama. 1519, Zhu Chenhao declared the Ming Dynasty emperor Zhengde a usurper, beginning the Prince of Ning rebellion, and led his army north in an attempt to capture Nanjing. 1584, William I of Orange was assassinated in his home in Delft, Holland, by Balthasar Gérard.
In 1806, the Vellore Mutiny was the first instance of a mutiny by Indian sepoys against the British East India Company. 1850, U.S. President Millard Fillmore was sworn in, a day after becoming President upon Zachary Taylor's death. 1882, War of the Pacific: Chile suffered its last military defeat in the Battle of La Concepción when a garrison of 77 men was annihilated by a 1,300-strong Peruvian force, many of them armed with spears.
In 1913, Death Valley, California, hit 134 °F (57 °C), the highest temperature recorded in the United States. 1921, Belfast's Bloody Sunday: Sixteen people were killed and 161 houses destroyed during rioting and gun battles in Belfast, Northern Ireland. 1925, Meher Baba began his silence of 44 years. His followers observed Silence Day on this date in commemoration. Also 1925, Scopes Trial: In Dayton, Tennessee, the so-called "Monkey Trial" began with John T. Scopes, a young high school science teacher accused of teaching evolution in violation of the Butler Act. 1938, Howard Hughes set a new record by completing a 91-hour airplane flight around the world.
In 1940, World War II: The Vichy government was established in France. Also 1940, World War II: Battle of Britain: The German Luftwaffe began attacking British convoys in the English Channel thus starting the battle (this start date is contested, though). 1941, Jedwabne Pogrom: The massacre of Jewish people living in and near the village of Jedwabne in Poland. 1942, Diplomatic relations between the Netherlands and the Soviet Union were established. Also 1942, World War II: An American pilot spotted a downed, intact Mitsubishi A6M Zero on Akutan Island (the "Akutan Zero") that the US Navy used to learn the aircraft's flight characteristics. 1946, Hungarian hyperinflation sets a record with inflation of 348.46 percent per day, or prices doubling every eleven hours.
In 1962, Telstar, the world's first communications satellite, was launched into orbit. 1966, the Chicago Freedom Movement, led by Martin Luther King, Jr., held a rally at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois. As many as 60,000 people come to hear Dr. King as well as Mahalia Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and Peter Paul and Mary. 1976, one American and three British mercenaries were executed in Angola following the Luanda Trial. 1985, the Greenpeace vessel Rainbow Warrior was bombed and sunk in Auckland harbour by French DGSE agents, killing Fernando Pereira.
In 1991, the South African cricket team was readmitted into the International Cricket Council following the end of Apartheid. Also 1991, Boris Yeltsin took office as the first elected President of Russia. 1992, in Miami, Florida, the former Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega was sentenced to 40 years in prison for drug and racketeering violations. 1997, in London scientists reported the findings of the DNA analysis of a Neanderthal skeleton which supports the "out of Africa theory" of human evolution placing an "African Eve" at 100,000 to 200,000 years ago. 1998, Roman Catholic sex abuse cases: The Diocese of Dallas agreed to pay $23.4 million to nine former altar boys who claimed they were sexually abused by Rudolph Kos, a former priest.

My books "History in a Year by the Conservative Voice" are available, recommended for those age ten and up. They have an essay or two on current affairs for each day of each month. They also list events, births, deaths and holidays and observances for each day around the world. But unless you ask a Library to stock it for you, they will not do so. One public Library feels they are too specialised.
No news yet as to wether the fierce battle of half wits will decide who will be the next ALP leader between Shorten, Albanese, Plibersek or Clare. Clare looks better in a suit. Nobody is challenging random phrase generator Turnbull, yet, either. Turnbull has declared “We have resolved this election! Ringing stuff. Hopefully Scott Morrison will move soon before Turnbull melts completely. Compulsory voting has not prevented the lowest turnout for the major parties in Liberal Party history. ALP recording their second worst result since last time. Liberals going backwards while their coalition colleagues, Nationals, still progressed. Turnbull deposed Mr Abbott under the false pretence of explaining policy better and being better at elections. Now the vote is over, Turnbull can resign. Or face further humiliation.
For some, at the moment, the Sex Party has more credibility.
=== from 2015 ===
Democrat hatred for the United States cultural assets is longstanding. In South Carolina, in 1962, a Democrat Governor put up the confederate flag on their capitol building while taking credit for improving educational standards while opposing integration. The flag is coming down now, a symbol exploited by bigots and haters. It is difficult to know when it was anything else. The current governor is Nikki Haley. She is GOP.
ALP leader Bill Shorten is the bastard boss portrayed in union attack adverts on Work Choices. He failed to adequately explain his union leader decisions from back in the day. Shorten smeared the High Court Judge instead, claiming Dyson Heydon is Mr Abbott's pawn. Shorten's leadership is exposed and so the eye of voters wanders to look at others. And the alternatives are showing voters what they have got. Tanya Plibersek, ALP Deputy leader, complains she is losing the ability to feed herself. The compelling vision is clearly calculated to inspire sympathy from ALP supporters at the grass roots. They will be needed to change the leadership. Jason Clare says he doesn't know why the government is turning back boats because the policy won't work. In fantasy terms, Clare is a compelling candidate because he has never been leader before and therefore all his mistakes have been someone else's fault. Something ALP members find appealing. But it isn't only ALP members campaigning for Shorten's position. Sarah Hanson-Young is going on sea patrol. She is going to the Mediterranean seas to find lost migrants. It is much nicer there in Summer than Australia in Winter. ALP should be happy with her embarrassment of leadership choices.
Hundreds of millions of tweets over just one soccer match. But it was an unusual match. By way of contrast, Netherlands vs Argentina did not get the same coverage as Germany vs Brazil. But then Germany spanked Brazil 7-1 in front of a home crowd for Brazil. It doesn't get more upsetting in world sport .. anywhere. The result is career changing for all involved. Netherlands beat Spain 5-1 earlier in the tournament, but did not carry on with that form. Germany have done well, but need to maintain it to win the tournament. That is their goal.
Today is the anniversary of an equivalent match as Argentina vs Netherlands has been, 48 BC had Julius Ceaser pitted against Pompey at Battle of Dyrrhachium. It was precipitous, and Ceaser risked all by accident, but nothing happened as two heavyweights faced off. Technically, Pompey won and so he went to face Ceaser again at Pharsalos with all the advantages .. yet lost everything. What had happened was Ceaser had sailed to Dyrrhachium through an enemy force in winter .. and got trapped with a much smaller force that could not resupply. Mark Antony marched to his aid, and Pompey moved to prevent the reuniting. The upshot was that Pompey had a force behind fortifications and Ceaser chose to starve him out by building more fortifications. Pompey had sea access to supplies, but could not feed his livestock. Ceaser's men were hungry, but when spring came, Ceaser would hold all the advantages. Pompey broke out of his enclosure and marched to Pharsalos. How will Argentina fare against Germany? How will Brazil against Netherlands? So much has happened, but the future is uncertain, and anything might prove all the difference.
Also on this day, but in the year 645, was the Isshi incident in Japan which transformed Japan and involved their honour system in a way that seems incomprehensible if one is not Japanese. Two princes, Nakatomi no Kamatari, Prince Naka no Ōe, conspired to kill a third, Soga no Iruka. The attack took place in front of Empress Kōgyoku during a court ceremony. Iruka was not killed during the first attack, but pleaded his case to the Empress, who retired to consider it. A second attack in front of the Empress finished Iruka and put the Empress in a difficult position, she was unclean because of the murder in her presence. So she stepped aside, but not for the killer, but his older brother. The killer became a monk. And after a few reigns, Emperor. It was a family affair. Much like that big family of soccer fans watching the events unfold in the world cup.
Also on this day, Lady Jane Grey took the throne of England in 1553. It was not a blessing for her. Neither was it a blessing when Richard Neville defeated Lancastrian forces of Henry VI in 1460. The Vellore mutiny against the British East India company happened on this day in 1806, but the Sepoys had to wait another hundred and forty two years to see independence for India. US Democrat President Andrew Jackson moved to kill the second US bank in 1832, setting in train a position of inept fiscal rectitude all Democrat Presidents have followed. Death Valley recorded a temperature of 57 degrees centigrade in 1913. It has been cooler ever since. In 1997, scientists reported DNA analysis of a Neanderthal that favoured the 'out of Africa' theory for human development, with an 'Eve' existing 100k to 200k years ago (She was a good woman who liked kids). Born on this day was John Calvin in 1509, Nikola Tesla in 1856, Marcel Proust in 1871, Harvey Ball 1921, Jake LaMotta 1921, Arlo Guthrie 1941 and Sunil Gavaskar in 1949.
Historical perspective on this day
In 48 BC, Battle of Dyrrhachium: Julius Caesar barely avoided a catastrophic defeat to Pompey in Macedonia. 138, Emperor Hadrian died after a heart failure at Baiae; he was buried at Rome in the Tomb of Hadrian beside his late wife, Vibia Sabina. 645, Isshi Incident: Prince Naka-no-Ōe and Fujiwara no Kamatari assassinated Soga no Iruka during a coup d'état at the imperial palace. 988, the Norse King Glun Iarainn recognised Máel Sechnaill II, High King of Ireland, and agreed to pay taxes and accept Brehon Law; the event is considered to be the founding of the city of Dublin. 1086, King Canute IV of Denmark killed by rebellious peasants.
In 1212, the most severe of several early fires of London burned most of the city to the ground. 1460, Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, defeated the king's Lancastrian forces and took King Henry VI prisoner in the Battle of Northampton. 1553, Lady Jane Grey took the throne of England. 1584, William I of Orange was assassinated in his home in Delft, Holland, by Balthasar Gérard. 1645, English Civil War: The Battle of Langport took place. 1778, American Revolution: Louis XVI of France declared war on the Kingdom of Great Britain. 1789, Alexander Mackenzie reached the Mackenzie River delta.
In 1806, the Vellore Mutiny was the first instance of a mutiny by Indian sepoys against the British East India Company. 1821, the United States took possession of its newly bought territory of Florida from Spain. 1832, the U.S. President Andrew Jackson vetoed a bill that would re-charter the Second Bank of the United States. 1850, U.S. President Millard Fillmore was sworn in, a day after becoming President upon Zachary Taylor's death. 1877, the then-villa of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, formally received its city charter from the Royal Crown of Spain. 1882, War of the Pacific: Chile suffered its last military defeat in the Battle of La Concepción when a garrison of 77 men was annihilated by a 1,300-strong Peruvian force, many of them armed with spears. 1890, Wyoming was admitted as the 44th U.S. state.
Back in 2013, when former Communist Party member Ron Radosh was whipping up a Pravda-style disinformation campaign against my anti-communist book, American Betrayal, New York Magazine's Jonathan Chait stepped up and wrote an essay knocking "West's paranoia." While I'm not certain, I strongly suspect Chait was inveigled by Radosh to write the New York Magazine piece; I imagine Radosh blanched at Chait's positive-ish headline: "Conservative Historian Has Interesting Ideas."
Still, Chait's essay bears the familiar stamp of the Radosh/Horowitz-led assault in its repeated misrepresentations of my footnoted analysis of the influence (not "control") on US policy-making potentially exerted by hundreds of Soviet "agents of influence" and fellow travelers covertly embedded inside the US government -- the subversive force that "court historians," who bestow glory on political favorites rather than shed light on the past, ignore or deny to this day. Not that it is likely journalista Chait cracked the book. All he had to do was pretend, a la Radosh & Horowitz, that I had advanced a theory, as Chait put it, that "the Soviets controlled the American government in the way they controlled, say, East Germany." As any reader knows, this is cartoonish rubbish -- but a handy way to deceive readers into dismissing the book as such.
I am reminded of this because Chait has now spun up an East-Germany-style vision of Donald Trump as Putin's Honecker, a traitor to the USA since 1987.
Titled "What If Trump Has Been a Russian Asset Since 1987?," the Chait piece does not even rise to the level of "conspiracy theory," Chait having presented no conspiracy to theorize about. His technique is to raise, magnify and connect doubts. "How do you even think about the small but real chance — 10 percent? 20 percent? — that the president of the United States has been covertly influenced or personally compromised by a hostile foreign power for decades?" he asks. One answer is, you write a few thousand pointless words.
But only about Trump. Chait takes everything back to Trump's July 1987 visit to Moscow. That's because in September of that same year Trump took out a series of full-page ads in prominent newspapers noting that "Japan and other nations have been taking advantage of the United States.″ In his open letter to the American people, Trump asked, ″Why are these nations not paying the United States for the human lives and billions of dollars we are losing to protect their interests?"
Classic Trump -- or was it really Gorbachev in disguise? As Chait notes, it is the Kremlin's propensity to seek splits between the US and its allies. He writes: "The safest assumption is that it’s entirely coincidental that Trump launched a national campaign, with himself as spokesman, built around themes that dovetailed closely with Soviet foreign-policy goals shortly after his Moscow stay. Indeed, it seems slightly insane to contemplate the possibility that a secret relationship between Trump and Russia dates back this far. But it can’t be dismissed completely." (Emphasis added.)
OK, I won't dismiss it completely. But it is also a fact that Japan by this same point in the mid-1980s was making massive inroads into the US construction market, very much including Manhattan. One Japanese company even built a 20-story addition on top of a building formerly owned by Donald Trump, as the New York Times noted in an article on the expanding share of Japanese construction business in the US. In its story of July 27, 1986, the Times noted: "Japanese construction companies certainly have both the cash and the contacts to create more and more American business. `'Any major Japanese contractor has money to burn,' said an officer of one leading Japanese builder, who asked not to be identified."
Nah, that couldn't possibly have driven Developer Donald a little nuts, eventually inspiring him to take out those ads the following year to tell the American people that we (and he) were being taken advantage of. The Kremlin made him do it.
I jest, of course. The point is, Chait would have rather more credibility on this score if, when the "party line" was a little different, he had not previously rejected on cue the copious historical record of Kremlin influence assembled in American Betrayal as "West's paranoia." Indeed, I don't recall Chait raising, magnifying and connecting such doubts about, say, the Moscow trip of Bill Clinton, whose "themes" as a draft-dodging, war-protesting tourist certainly "dovetailed closely with Soviet foreign-policy goals" both before and after his1969-1970 winter travels to Brezhnev's Moscow, then Prague, still reeling from the Soviet crushing of "Prague Spring."
Then there's what has been regrettably nicknamed the Trump "pee tape." Chait: "There is growing reason to think the pee tape might indeed exist." Really? Well, there is also reason (whether growing, I can't say) to think that the Czech intelligence recruitment tape of Bill Clinton might indeed exist. Meanwhile, the tape of Barack Obama promising "flexibility" to, as Chait aptly calls him, "former KGB agent" Putin via Medvedev does exist. I know it does because I've seen it. Has Jonathan Chait? (Watch here.) While he's on this sudden Kremlin Influence kick, Chait would also do well to peruse the FBI files on the Soviet/communist connected family of Obama senior advisor, Valerie Jarrett, and also brush up on the Soviet/communist troika that politically birthed that winning 2008 team of Obama-Axelrod-Jarrett.
It's guaranteed he won't because Chait's pursuits are not about truth-seeking or intellectual stimulation; they are all and only about political manipulation. Nowhere is his agit prop more thickly laid on than when he talks about Donald Trump as Putin's "much-needed flank against not just Obama but his former secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her aggressive position against Russia." In transforming Hillary "Reset" Clinton into a regular George Patton, Chait conveniently omits the valuable goodies Obama-Clinton bestowed on Mother Russia, from permanent normal trading status, long coveted by the "former KGB agent," to the massive "civilian" high tech transfer via the Clinton-Foundation-enriching Skolkovo set-up, where, as the Army warned in 2013, hypersonic cruise missile engine technology was already coming online. One has to wonder: Does Chait really think the KGB-linked bank in Moscow gave Bill Clinton that $500K speaking fee in 2012 for nothing? Meanwhile, ask yourself: If you are sitting in the Politburo and one US candidate is promising to revitalize the US military, very much including its nuclear arsenal (Trump), and the other US candidate is arguing that "the last thing we need" is next-generation nuclear-armed cruise missiles (Clinton), whom would you rather "collude" with?
Such thoughts, however, pose a clear and present danger to Chait's miasmic belief that "the Cold War that Americans had long considered won has dissolved into the bizarre spectacle of Reagan’s party’s abetting the hijacking of American government by a former KGB agent."
For the record, I will note that American Betrayal argues America lost the "Cold War," that ever-undermined-from-within struggle against the expansion and entrenchment of communistic ideologies. This probably accounts for some share of the wrath it aroused on the part of Cold War triumphalists who seek to ensure Americans never actually understand how our institutions, from the halls of power in Washington (definitely including the "IC") to the pulpits to the campuses to the culture, were long ago Marxified according to well-executed and well-documented Kremlin strategy executed by masses of genuine American traitors.
If America lost the Cold War long ago -- after also losing World War II, American Betrayal's other argument, identifying the Soviet Union as the true victor (thanks to those hundreds of agents of influence at the beating heart of every government, Allied and Axis) -- then it cannot be "Reagan's party abetting the hijacking of the American government" in 2016; it was already a long way toward a fait accompli before Trump ever began his completely unlikely and wholly unexpected political rise on a heretofore unseen counter-revolutionary "America First" platform.
Chait's essay, then, is just so much narrative control, just so much framing, just so much warding off of the counter-revolution that President Trump's victory made possible, at least. I could be wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if it all didn't begin with a heavy dose of Radosh.

Zhang, Guannan, and Christian Hilty. “Applications of Dissolution Dynamic Nuclear Polarization in Chemistry and Biochemistry.” Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry 0, no. 0 (2018).
Sensitivity of detection is one of the most limiting aspects when applying NMR spectroscopy to current problems in the molecular sciences. A number of hyperpolarization methods exist for increasing the population difference between nuclear spin Zeeman states and enhance the signal-to-noise ratio by orders of magnitude. Among these methods, dissolution dynamic nuclear polarization (D-DNP) is unique in its capability of providing high spin polarization for many types of molecules in the liquid state. Originally proposed for biomedical applications including in vivo imaging, applications in high resolution NMR spectroscopy are now emerging. These applications are the focus of the present review. Using D-DNP, a small sample aliquot is first hyperpolarized as a frozen solid at low temperature, followed by dissolution into the liquid state. D-DNP extends the capabilities of liquid state NMR spectroscopy towards shorter timescales and enables the study of nonequilibrium processes, such as the kinetics and mechanisms of reactions. It allows the determination of intermolecular interactions, in particular based on spin relaxation parameters. At the same time, a challenge in the application of this hyperpolarization method is that spin polarization is nonrenewable. Substantial effort has been devoted to develop methods for enabling rapid correlation spectroscopy, the measurement of time-dependent signals, and the extension of the observable time window. With these methods, D-DNP has the potential to open new application areas in the chemical and biochemical sciences.

"Currency War, Then Trade War -
Is Shooting War Next?"
"My thesis is that currency wars are followed by trade wars and then finally shooting wars among major powers. This happened in the 1930s and it seems to be happening again.
Currency wars begin in a condition of too much debt and not enough growth. Countries steal growth from their trading partners by cheapening their currencies to promote exports and import inflation. The present currency war started in January 2010. The problem with currency wars is that all advantage is temporary and is quickly erased by retaliation. Trading partners retaliate with their own devaluations. Currency cross-rates end up back where they started, with costs imposed due to the uncertainties.
Not only is the world not better off but it is worse off because of the costs and uncertainty resulting from the currency manipulations. Eventually, the world wakes up to this reality and moves to the trade war stage. Once countries realize that currency wars don’t work, they turn quickly to trade wars through tariffs and other trade barriers. The problem is that trade wars don’t work either, for the same reason currency wars don’t work - retaliation or tit-for-tat tariffs soon puts everyone back where they started.
The new trade war started in January 2018 with the announcement of tariffs, and those tariffs actually began to take effect last week. Just because trade wars have started does not mean the currency wars are over. Not at all. The currency wars and trade wars continue side by side. In fact, they are related.
If the U.S. puts tariffs on China, which we have, then China can fight back two ways. The first is to impose their own tariffs on U.S. exports, which they have. The second is to cheapen their currency to offset the impact of the tariffs. If the U.S. imposes a 25% tariff on China but China cheapens its currency by 25%, then everyone is back where they started in terms of the costs of Chinese goods to U.S. consumers.
This would be a potentially devastating development for markets. A shock yuan maxi-devaluation will be the shot heard round the world as it was in August and December 2015 (both times, U.S. stocks fell over 10% in a matter of weeks). There are individual winners and losers from the currency and trade wars, but the global economy as a whole is definitely a loser. This new trade war will get ugly fast and the world economy will be collateral damage. I believe it will get much worse before it is resolved.
We should look for slower growth and possibly a recession as the trade and currency wars play out. Let’s hope that history does not repeat and that we don’t end up in a Third World War, as the currency/trade wars of the 1930s helped lead to WWII. Below, I show you three crucial weapons Trump has at his disposal in the trade war with China. The globalists are panicking, but as you’ll see, there’s little they - or Congress - can do to stop him. Read on."
"Trump’s Devastating Trade War Weapons"
By Jim Rickards
"The news last week was dominated by breathless headlines about the new trade war between the U.S. and China. But this trade war has been brewing for years and came as no surprise to readers of my newsletter, Project Prophesy. In fact, the new trade war is simply a continuation of the currency wars that began in 2010.
I’ve warned for over a year that President Trump’s threats of tariffs should be taken seriously, while most of Wall Street discounted Trump’s talk as mere bluster. Now the trade wars are here as we expected, and they will get much worse before they are resolved.
The most powerful analytic frame today for understanding political and macroeconomic developments is the sequence from currency wars to trade wars and then ultimately shooting wars. Currency wars arise in a condition of too much debt and too little growth. Economic powers try to steal growth from their trading partners by devaluing their currencies to promote exports and import inflation. This can work in the short run, but the benefits are strictly temporary because trading partners retaliate by devaluing their own currencies. The tit-for-tat devaluations leave everyone worse off because of the uncertainty and transaction costs imposed.
Once it becomes clear that currency wars are a failure, nations resort to trade wars. These begin with tariffs imposed by one nation on another to protect domestic industry and reduce trade deficits. As with currency wars, the problem is retaliation. Victims of tariffs impose their own tariffs and the world is worse off.
We’ve seen this pattern before in the 1920s and 1930s. It began with currency wars (1921–1936), then trade wars (1930–1939) and finally a shooting war in the Second World War that began in Asia in 1936, spread to Europe in 1939 and subsumed the U.S. in 1941. The present currency war began in 2010. The new trade war began in 2018. Let’s hope a new shooting war or even a third world war does not follow in sequence.
Trump is like a five-star general in the currency and trade wars. It’s important to understand his weapons and tactics. Trump likes to threaten to get results but often does not follow through on his threats. Recently he threatened to withdraw the U.S. from the World Trade Organization (WTO), the primary multilateral body for settling trade disputes and a successor to one of the original Bretton Woods institutions (along with the IMF and World Bank) established in 1944. But Trump’s threat to withdraw from the WTO will not be carried out. It’s in the bluff category, strictly for show.
The fact is Trump is turning trade policy upside down without withdrawing from WTO by using other tools at his disposal. There has always been an exemption from the application of WTO rules where national security is involved. It's just that past presidents have never used the authority because they are globalists (Republicans and Democrats). Trump’s method is to weaponize national security considerations in the context of trade disputes. The U.S. has always had ways to stop trade flows and restrict direct foreign investment based on national security considerations.
Trump’s three main "weapons," mostly unknown to everyday Americans, are IEEPA, CFIUS and Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. IEEPA stands for the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Enacted in 1977, it allows the President to regulate commerce after declaring a national emergency. He can declare this emergency “to deal with any unusual and extraordinary threat, which has its source in whole or substantial part outside the United States, to the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the United States.”
CFIUS stands for the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States. It began under President Ford in 1975. CFIUS gives the Executive Branch power to monitor the impact of foreign investment in the United States, and determine if it jeopardizes national security. It can block acquisitions of U.S. firms by Chinese companies, for example.
Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 is the “nuclear option” when it comes to trade wars. I don’t want to get too deeply in the weeds here, but Section 301 gives the president broad authority to impose sanctions and penalties. It gives the president a free hand to impose billions of dollars of damages if not more on China.
So Trump has the best of both worlds. He can threaten the WTO, but doesn't actually have to withdraw because he can get everything he wants anyway using IEEPA, CFIUS and Section 301. The globalists are freaking out but can't stop him.
Unlike previous globalist presidents, Trump is a nationalist. And he's using these powers like crazy to push his agenda. The Congress can't stop him because all of these weapons are statutory; they were already passed by Congress in the 1970s and 1980s. These statutes delegate expansive powers to the president. What's new is not the law but the way the law is being used.
During the Weimar Republic hyperinflation in 1922–23, paper money became worthless and was swept down sewers (left) or fed into furnaces as fuel (right). The currency wars continued with French devaluation (1925), U.K. devaluation (1931) and U.S. devaluation (1933). When the currency wars failed to produce growth, the trade wars erupted with the Smoot-Hawley tariffs (1930) and similar tariffs from U.S. trading partners. After currency wars and trade wars failed came shooting wars in Asia (1936) and Europe (1939). The same pattern is repeating today with a new currency war (2010) and trade war (2018).
There is legislation pending in Congress right now to amend CFIUS. The name of the bill is the Foreign Investment Risk Review Modernization Act, or FIRRMA. This amendment to CFIUS will give CFIUS greatly expanded powers to stop Chinese takeovers of U.S. crown jewels in technology, telecommunications and the defense sector. This new law shuts the Chinese (and anyone else Trump doesn't like) out of the market to acquire U.S. tech and defense stocks. Once you remove the biggest buyers from the market, prices will plunge to "re-price" to the new reality.
With the trade wars and pending legislation in mind, what are my predictive analytic models telling us about the prospects for a stock market crash in the tech and defense sectors? Right now my analytical tools are telling me that FIRRMA is close to a sure thing to become law, but Wall Street is underestimating the impact of this on takeover activity and stock prices to tech and defense companies. FIRRMA has been attached to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal 2019 (starting Oct. 1, 2018). However, Congress will be in recess most of the time after July 26 for vacations and midterm election campaigning.
NDAA is "must pass" legislation. This means Congress has to pass this before the end of September unless they enact a continuing resolution. I estimate two possible outside dates for this to become law and go to the president for signature: Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018 (with no continuing resolution), or Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018 (end of this session of Congress).
Of course, markets won’t wait until then to react. Sooner than later, Wall Street will see this coming and start to discount the impact. FIRRMA has bipartisan support from liberal Democrats and conservative Republicans. It's as close to a "sure thing" in D.C. legislation as you can get.
China will not take this lying down. They are fighting back in the trade wars using currency war weapons and will also retaliate directly by restricting U.S. investment in China’s technology, another blow to global tech stock prices."
