Pop-up dinner at R&G Family Farms' Bing cherry orchard

“Welcome to our family’s first ‘Evening In the Orchard!’” exclaimed Drew Rotner, co-owner of R&G Family Farms, to a table of 24 Lodi wine and food lovers set in the shade of 29-year-old Bing cherry trees.

For the event, the Rotner and Gotelli families collaborated with three extraordinarily talented chefs with Lodi backgrounds, now working as independent contractors in the modern day tradition known as “pop-up restaurants.” Pop-ups are more like restaurants with no walls: Chefs put together gourmet meals, usually very adventurous multi-course affairs, and invite “friends” to sit down and enjoy. For a set fee, of course. It can take place in the rented space of a warehouse, an old Victorian, a penthouse or professional catering kitchen; or maybe in someone’s backyard, the middle of a desert or top of a remote, forested hill. Or in this case, this past Saturday (July 7, 2018), the pop-up happened in the middle of a Lodi Bing cherry orchard planted in 1989 by Gotelli family.

R&G Family Farms' Drew Rotner (right) greeting guests with Chefs (from left) Dawnell O'Brien, Danica Aviles and John Hitchcock; plus Pati Waggoner-Myers (second from right) of Bella Festa

One of the three chefs, Dawnelle O’Brien, acts as sort of a spokesperson for this particular group. Ms. O’Brien is the former Pastry chef at Wine & Roses Hotel’s Towne House Restaurant in Lodi, where she worked with her other two pop-up partners-in-crime, so to speak: John Hitchcock (former Executive Chef of Towne House Restaurant) and Danica Aviles (former Town House Restaurant Chef de Cuisine).

At one time, very recently, all three chefs were working under the guidance of Wine & Roses Hotel’s legendary, James Beard Award winning Culinary Director, Bradley Ogden. But today, all three are pursuing separate independent careers: O’Brien as the owner of her own, Stockton-based cake company, D’z Desserts; Aviles as co-proprietor of the San Francisco-based pop-up restaurant called Pinoy Heritage (specializing in contemporary, Filipino-inspired cuisine); and Hitchcock, who now labors as what he calls a “machinist” for his family’s Lodi-based hydraulic company (although Chef Hitchcock primarily spends his time at a computer, designing equipment with 3-D CAD software).

Guests enjoying pop-up dinner reception with imaginative hor d'ouevres and summer fruit sangria

“When we get together,” says O’Brien, “we call ourselves a ‘trifecta,’ or ‘three amigos.’” You might also think of them as like Crosby, Stills & Nash getting together; because, set free from the four walls of Wine & Roses Hotel’s lavish Town House Restaurant, these three chefs are now soaring with dishes singing with culinary imagination like never seen before in Lodi wine country, as evidenced by their pop-up dinner menu in the Gotelli orchard. And believe you us, these dishes looked and tasted even better, and fresher, than they sound on paper:

Stone Fruit, Arugula, Chèvre, and Pickled Red Onion in Vanilla Bean Vinaigrette

Heirloom Tomato and Burrata in Calivirgin EVVO and Aged Balsamic

Duo of Fresh Summer Beans

Thyme Confit Marble Potatoes

Brentwood Corn Salad, Medley of Peppers and Heirloom Cherry Tomatoes

Fresh Ratatouille

Roasted Skuna Bay Salmon and Chimichurri

Mary’s Airline Chicken and Lemon Jus

36-Hour Sous-Vide Short Ribs in Pinot Noir Jus

Lemon Posset with Macerated Fruit (R&G Family Peach, Blueberry and Blackberry)

Micro-sized Hawaiian loco moco reception appetizers

Pictures tell thousands of words, and so we’ll let our images do the talking, and unleash your imagination.

While the pop-up “Evening In the Orchard” took place on the bare, fluffy, sandy dirt between Bing cherry trees that, less than two weeks ago, gave up the last of Lodi’s 2018 harvest, you can clearly see that the table setting was befitting the most lavish multi-star-restaurant. That is because the chefs and Rotner/Gotelli families also enlisted another well known Lodi talent, Pati Waggoner-Myers: Director of Operations for the Bella Festa party planning company, and who has also coordinated countless weddings at Wine & Roses Hotel.

D'z Desserts Chef Dawnelle O'Brien with her shrimp summer folls with peanut dipping sauce

Assisting the chefs, and responsible for the stunning flower arrangements on the pop-up dinner table, was Lorraine Hitchcock: the former Culinary Education Coordinator of Wine & Roses Hotel (who also happens to be Chef Hitchcock’s mother and, of course, lifetime head cheerleader).

As if the 10-course menu wasn’t enough, the 24 paying guests were also treated to an apéritif of fresh white peach sangria (heaven-sent at the end of another warm, sleepy, dusty Delta day); served with a bewildering array of hors d’oeuvres that included Fried Oyster Gribiche, Fresh Tomato Water Paté de Fruit with Spiced Cherry Preserve, Shrimp Summer Rolls with Peanut Dip, and the tiniest version of the Hawaiian dish called Loco Moco (ground beef layered with a quail’s egg, rice and a smidgen of pan gravy) ever assembled.

Uvaggio Cinsault Rosé from Lodi's historic Bechthold Vineyard

Once seated at the table at 7:00 PM, all the guests uncorked their own bottles of wine (BYOW is typically part of pop-up restaurant dining), which were readily shared with newfound table partners. Our own contribution to the communal table:

A soulful, bone dry and meaty textured 2016 Uvaggio Bechthold Vineyard Lodi Cinsault Rosé (crafted from Lodi’s oldest vines, planted in 1886)

A crisp, perfumey, silken fine 2017 Oak Farm Mohr-Fry Ranches Lodi Sauvignon Blanc

An ultra-spiced, nostril-tingling, layered, lithe and lingering 2016 Turley Steacy Ranch Lodi Zinfandel (from an ancient vine planting dating back to 1907)

Gotelli Farms' Missy Gotelli (center) with Drew Rotner and her daughter Ashley Rotner

When greeting the adventurous diners at the table, Mr. Rotner – standing alongside the chefs and his wife, Ashley Rotner (of the Gotelli family) – told the visitors to his family's farm: “When we first started talking to the chefs about a pop-up, we said how cool would it be to do it on long table set in the middle of the orchard. This would be taking farming-to-fork to the next level. This is our first pop-up, but we definitely something plan to do more in the future.”

Mr. Rotner acknowledged his in-laws, Tom and Missy Gotelli, also seated for the dinner in the orchard. “Ashley’s grandparents established their farm in the 1920s, and together we started up R&G Family Farms three years ago, selling primarily to local restaurants, which is how I got to know this motley crew of chefs.”

Relaxing in the shade of R&G Family Farms Bing cherry trees

Rotner, as it were, understates the impact of his increasingly significant role in the Lodi region’s blossoming culinary culture. He is already known for his willingness to pack up boxes of fresh picked pomegranate, or cherry, pumpkin, peach, blackberry, blueberry or walnut and deliver to a local restaurant in the middle of an evening shift, if a kitchen happens to run out of anything. And these include a good number of San Joaquin Valley’s finest restaurants: besides Towne House Restaurant, also Downtown Lodi’s Rosewood Bar & Grill (where Rotner once tended bar) and Fenix, Pietro’s Trattoria, and Market Tavern in Stockton.

Longtime Lodi Certified Farmers Market patrons are also long familiar with the family that Mr. Rotner married into: Missy Gotelli and her two daughters, Ashley and Shelby, qualify as School Street institutions; offering tastes of their Lodi grown cherries to everyone and anyone ever since the girls were 4-year-olds (the two, irresistibly cute, cherry-hawking “kids” are now grown up, with husbands).

Pinoy Heritage Chef Danica Aviles

If you are interested in keeping track of future R&G Family farm-to-fork events, you may inquire with Drew and Ashley Rotner at rgfamilyfarms@gmail.com.

As for the three-amigo chefs, the best way to keep tabs on future pop-up dinners (their trifecta dinner in the orchard was just their second collaborative event) may be through the Facebook page of Chef O’Brien’s D’z Desserts, where you can contact her directly.

Could Stockton be the future home for a new California State University? If some city and state officials have a say, some proposed plans will become a reality.

An Assembly bill is making its way through the state capitol, aiming to transform Stockton into a college destination.

It’s no secret the CSU system is bursting at the seams. In 2017, 31,000 qualified college students turned away. Stockton says its ready to take on the next campus and one city leader even says it’s not a matter of if, but when.

“We’re starting really young with him. I’m hoping he gets a scholarship,” said Stockton mother Eva Vindiola.

Out of interest, other than Liddle, Parkes, Grainger and Stockton, how much have you seen of the other 7 players to come to this conclusion?

It was initially a suspicion but the players have gone a little bit out of their way to prove me right.

That is obviously not the team that will start the season and as people have said, pre-season games mean nothing really.

They stuck a few young lads in there and like when Kavanagh tried this the team got thumped more often than not.

Bring a few lads on to see if they are ready from the bench in the league by all means but be prepared for mixed performances.

Anyhow, even though it was a friendly we still should not be getting humped off Barrow full stop - I bet Sheridan is cacking his pants at the cash he has to repair things, even more than the 'bedwetters' on here :)

Universal Basic Income Is Not the Solution to Poverty      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Utopia—a term meaning both “good place” and “no place”—has a long history: It dates back to Thomas More’s book of the same name, which was published in 1516. More imagined a perfect world as a lens through which to see the current one: In order to fully appreciate the unfairness of 16th-century England, More contrasted it with a hypothetical Utopia where all men were equally prosperous.

No one mistook More’s Utopia for a policy proposal. As Rutger Bregman explains in the introduction to Utopia for Realists, virtually all of humanity was living in extreme poverty in More’s day. What’s more, the same was true 200 years later. The average annual income in Italy in 1300 was roughly $1,600; by 1880, after the Renaissance and the Enlightenment and the invention of gunpowder and the steam engine and the printing press, it was still $1,600. For all those centuries, Utopia was only an ethos, no more than a provocative thought experiment.

Since 1880, however, Utopia has come increasingly within our grasp. The wealth of the average Italian has increased fifteenfold, while the size of the global economy has multiplied 250 times. Less than 10 percent of the world’s population now lives in extreme poverty, vaccines have saved many more lives than all of the 20th century’s wars killed in aggregate, and 6 billion people own a portable computer that can connect them to anywhere around the globe.

In such a world, with tens of trillions of dollars of wealth, extreme poverty is a choice, not an inevitability. That’s the compelling and compassionate heart of Annie Lowrey’s new book, Give People Money: the simple and powerful proposition that ours is a world with more than enough money to ensure that no one lives in poverty.

And yet, Lowrey finds poverty everywhere she looks. She travels from Korea to Kenya, and from Mumbai to Maine, and finds objectively unacceptable levels of poverty in each of those places, forcing us to look unblinkingly at the kind of situations and individuals from which many of us would normally avert our eyes.

Lowrey doesn’t just document the problem; she also offers a simple and effective solution. If you take very poor people and give them money, they stop being very poor pretty much by definition. They also, it turns out, become healthier, work more, and generally become vastly more productive members of society.

From development circles to fully industrialized economies, this broad idea is relatively uncontroversial. Cash-transfer programs, including Social Security, which don’t try to tell you what to spend the money on, tend to work very effectively and lift millions out of poverty. Many governments have adopted what development economists like to call CCTs, or conditional cash transfers, with significant positive results; more recently, there has been a lot of buzz surrounding UCTs, or unconditional cash transfers, which remain largely untested at scale.

And then there’s universal basic income, or UBI, which is basically the mother of all UCTs: an unconditional transfer going to every single person in a society, no strings attached. Whether you’re a homeless single mother or a jet-setting billionaire, you receive the same set amount every month. (In the U.S., that amount would be somewhere between $500 and $1,500.) UBI is the big idea Lowrey is pushing with her book; her unsubtle subtitle is: How a Universal Basic Income Would End Poverty, Revolutionize Work, and Remake the World.

UBI is having a moment right now. The idea has been around for centuries, but there’s something about UBI that’s resonating today, with dozens of books written on the subject from all manner of different perspectives. The most common takes come from the left (as Lowrey does), from the right (as a means of dismantling the welfare state), and from the techno-dystopians, who worry about a future where the robots have taken over and no one has a job. The appeal of a UBI to all three groups is easy to see: It appears to be a very simple solution to any number of incredibly complex problems. Think of it as the “put it on the blockchain” of political economy.

Lowrey seems to know there are no easy fixes, but she forges ahead anyway, explaining in one bravura sentence toward the end of her book why: She sees a rare opportunity to do something really bold, or at least to make milder versions of a UBI more politically acceptable.

In light of the country’s political polarization, veiled and unveiled racism, income inequality, wage stagnation, and geographic pulling apart; for all the growth in the wealth gap and of student-loan debt; given the country’s retirement and disability and child-care-work crises; granted the Uberization of the economy, the Overton window—the scope of policy possibilities—has been thrown open.

Lowrey’s book is not detailed policy proposal, like the one Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes put forward in his own UBI book, Fair Shot. Ultimately, Give People Money is a continuation of More’s project: an examination of the present through the lens of a counterfactual. Lowrey’s UBI is “an ethos,” she writes, as much as it is an actual proposal. It’s a way of espousing a certain set of beliefs; it’s “a lesson and an ideal”; it’s a push “to keep imagining, so that when the future arrives, we are ready.”

Perhaps that’s because UBI is a pretty inefficient way of giving poor people money. Think about it this way: Just 40 percent of a UBI’s expenditure would go to the bottom 40 percent of the population, and a mere 10 percent would go to the 10 percent who need it most. What would happen to the rest of the money?

Study after study has shown that when you give money to the homeless and the very poor, they don’t spend it on frivolities like booze and tobacco: In fact, rates of drinking and smoking invariably go down rather than up. On the other hand, if you gave me an extra $1,500 per month, no strings attached, I’m sure a significant chunk of that would end up in my wine fridge. That might be popular with my local wine merchants, but as a means of redistributing society’s wealth in the interests of fairness and equality, it does leave something to be desired.

That’s why so many UBI experiments are taking place among the very poor—in Kenya, say, or India. In California, the big UBI pilot is happening in Stockton, not in Palo Alto. By targeting the poor, UBI researchers can generate the biggest possible upside, with the lowest potential for waste. But the heart of a UBI is the U: the universality. And the minute that a UBI becomes truly universal, encompassing the rich alongside the poor, it starts becoming much more wasteful than any pilot project.

Lowrey understands this, and is not particularly wedded to a truly universal basic income. In India, she toys with the idea of excluding anybody fortunate enough to own an air conditioner. In the U.S., she says, the UBI could be applied only to the bottom 60 percent of the population. She also brings up the idea of instead giving “baby bonds” of $50,000 to everybody born into the lowest wealth quartile, or implementing some kind of jobs guarantee. At one point, she writes that an “even better idea would be to implement a UBI as a negative income tax” that takes your annual income and, if it’s below a certain minimum level, raises it to that level.

There are always trade-offs. A negative income tax would not benefit anybody much above the poverty line, and in that sense, it would lack a key feature of the UBI, which is that it’s needs-blind and benefits everybody. If only the poor benefitted from a negative income tax, that would create resentment among the middle classes: The slogan coined by British sociologist Richard Titmuss is that “a policy for the poor is a poor policy.”

Ultimately, Lowrey punts on choosing between these options, saying that working out policy design issues risks getting “stuck in the fine print.” Her big idea is to give people money, not to worry overmuch about how to give people money. As a good first step, she says, we should just convert existing programs, like Section 8 housing vouchers, into cash transfers; in general, when it comes to government social spending, the more unconditional it is, the better.

She’s right about that. The big idea in Lowrey’s title—give people money—is a powerful one, strongly backed up with abundant evidence. But her subtitle talks about a UBI, rather than about cash transfers in general, and Lowrey structures the book from its opening chapter as being a case for UBI—the very front on which the book falls short.

Lowrey is convincing on the need to eradicate poverty, and equally convincing that cash transfers can often be one of the best ways of doing so. But she fails to mirror her passionate rallying cry on the subject of poverty reduction with an equally passionate argument for UBI in particular. Lowrey has more zeal than the bloodless Chris Hughes, who is so unexcited by the idea of unconditionality that his preferred solution actually includes a work requirement. At the same time, she lacks Bregman’s infectious enthusiasm for UBI—Utopia for Realists is a full-throated case for UBI—and she ultimately doesn’t come close to demonstrating that a universal basic income would be the best way to target cash at the poor.

“UBI is hardly a silver bullet,” writes Lowrey, correctly. But if you want a designed a policy, one that reflects the desires of the poor and the neediest, one that’s calibrated to become broadly politically palatable, then at some point you need to revert back from being a crusading revolutionary with Utopian ideas to being a policy wonk in the weeds. Too clear-eyed and empirical to be an ardent true believer, yet also too Utopian to be a policy wonk, Lowrey ends up falling uncomfortably between the two stools. Her book is an excellent guide to the issues surrounding a UBI. But it won’t cause many people to start advocating for one.

Failure - abject failure, is the only option. Just another government yoke around the hard-working honest taxpayer. Of course our beloved "leaders" use your taxes to buy votes with your taxes to get themselves voted back in office so they can continue being a parasite. That is also the reason they favor massive invasion of the country by Illegal Aliens. Allow invasion, give Amnesty, Bada-Boom, Bada-Bing more Democratic voters sucking the life blood out of the country. None of these mindless Social Engineering taxpayer boondoggles bode well for the country. They have NEVER worked in the past, to wit, a 20 Trillion dollar National Debt and we have more "poor" and "Underprivileged" than we did when the "Great Society" as put in place by Lyndon Johnson( a raging Democrat) in the 1960's. Also has anyone noticed that almost every "idea" that arose in the 1960's and the "Flower Children" has been a disastrous failure on all fronts.Of course their children are now our "Leaders". That should tell you something. And you ignore these disastrous trends at your peril, your children's peril and your grandchildren's peril. Ok Stockton, good luck with all that! Larry

http://jumpingjackflashhypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/02/jumping-jack-flash-hypothesis-its-gas.html

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

Residents of California city once known as 'America's foreclosure capital' are set to get monthly $500 stipend, with NO strings attached, in bid to boost local economy

Note:  Only 100 people.  There have been lots of trials of this idea over the years but it has always proved too costly

Stockton, California will become the first city in the country to participate in a test of Universal Basic Income, in which 100 residents will be given $500-dollars-a-month, with no strings attached.

The program aims to create a level of income that no one will fall beneath.

By providing impoverished residents a regular sum of money that they can use on anything they wish, be it food, clothes, gas, or [drugs] starting a new venture, those behind the program believe it could go a long way to give people enough support to try out new ideas.

The program in Stockton, which was once known as America's foreclosure capital, will see the program launched by 2019, and the payments will continue to the individuals chosen for the program for a full 18-months.

The Stockton UBI program has heavy backing from one of the wealthiest areas of the country- Silicon Valley, according to CNN Money.

The idea is, in part, to off-set the economic distress the growing automation industry is expected to cause to American laborers, as well as a way to potentially reduce poverty.

One of the backers for the Stockton UBI program is Facebook's co-founder Chris Hughes, whose organization, the Economic Security Project, contributed $1 million to the Stockton initiative.

'It is such a fundamental idea behind America that if you work hard, you can get ahead, and you certainly don't live in poverty. But that isn't true today, and it hasn't been true in the country for decades,' Hughes told CNN Money.

'I believe that unless we make significant changes today, the income inequality in our country will continue to grow and call into question the very nature of our social contract.'

One-in-four people in the city of more than 300,000 live in poverty, with the median  household income sitting at $49,271, compared to $57,617 nationally.

The city's inhabitants are also largely minorities with 70 per cent identifying themselves as such.

'Stockton is a city that looks a lot like the rest of America,' said Natalie Foster, co-founder and co-chair of the Economic Security Project.

Several heavy hitters in Silicon Valley have touted the importance of exploring funded programs for those living in poverty, such as Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.

'We should explore ideas like universal basic income to make sure that everyone has a cushion to try new ideas,' Zuckerberg said at a Harvard commencement address in May 2017.

'We have a bunch of folks starting off life already behind, born into communities that don't have a lot of opportunity,' said Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs.

'My mom always used to say, 'You have to get out of  Stockton.' ... But I want Stockton to be a place people want to live in.'

And a real fear for cities like Stockton is the 'looming threat of automation and displacement,' as Tubbs puts it.

He says the companies that are building these technologies, like the ones in Silicon Valley, ultimately 'have a responsibility to make sure people aren't adversely impacted and also make their communities better places.'

'I've watched the tech community become very interested in Universal Basic Income for the past several years. I think it stems from one part guilt and one part optimism,' Foster said.

'These are folks who believe in the moonshot, believe in the big ideas, and that nothing is too big.'

Meanwhile existing cash transfer programs such as one in Alaska- where for the past 40-years residents receive varying annual cash payment from oil royalties- are being looked at as an example of the possibilities UBI could hold for under-served communities.

'They use it to save for education, to get them through seasonal changes in their work, or to pay for heating during the winter when that gets much more expensive,' Foster said.

Similar UBI programs have been tested around the world by various organizations such as in Finland, Italy, Uganda, Cambodia and India.

For example in Finland, a monthly stipend of 560 euros was given to 2,000 unemployed people between the ages of 25 and 58. In Cambodia, $5 a month went to pregnant women and children.

'I believe Islam killed my daughter': A grieving mother tells how her daughter cut off all contact with family and friends to marry an older Muslim man who left her on a bathroom floor for FIVE DAYS to die

Siobhann Brown had not heard from her eldest daughter since she called five years earlier saying she was converting to Islam to get married and have her first child. Then two Victoria Police detectives arrived at her door.

Ashlee Brown, 25, had been found dead on her bathroom floor with more than 100 blunt and sharp force injuries covering most of her body.

The mother of three children under five had been bound, gagged and had her long strawberry blonde hair cut off.

Ashlee's husband Mohamed Naddaf, 37, told police he had found his wife in that state in their garage about five days earlier but chose to 'care' for her in the bathroom rather than call Triple 0.

Ms Brown had to run out of her house in disbelief when she heard how her daughter died. She is now faced with Naddaf pleading guilty to manslaughter, without ever going to trial.

'Ashlee was a fun-loving girl,' Ms Brown told Daily Mail Australia. 'She was giving. She was loving. She loved the sun, the beach. She loved singing, dancing, having fun.'

Ashlee had been raised in country Victoria as a 'typical Aussie girl' and gradually grew restless as she hit her late teenage years.

She took increasingly regular trips to Melbourne, once returning to introduce her family to Mohamed Rannaf when she was was about 18. 'She introduced him as "Macca",' Ms Brown said. 'It was very brief.

'He seemed like a nice, very polite, young man. It pains me to say that. I didn't see him again after that.'

There was no communication for some time before a phone call came 'out of the blue' that would herald the end of all contact between Ms Brown and her daughter.

When Ashlee was about 20 she rang to say she was pregnant and wanted her mother's blessing to convert to Islam and marry Mohamed.

'She said to me, "Mum, I need your blessing to become Muslim". She said "I'm three months' pregnant and I'm engaged to Mohamed. I would really like to marry him, mum, and settle down and have a baby".

'I said to her, "Darling, I don’t know anything about the Muslim religion. As long as you know what you're doing. 'I said, "Do you have to wear one of those burqas or hijabs? I didn't know what they were called.

'She said, "No mum, only when I go into the mosque because it's disrespectful for a woman to show her face before God".

'I said to Ashlee, "As long as you're making a fully informed decision and it's what you really want".'

Ashlee said that it was.

'There was a pause after that,' Ms Brown said. 'She said. "Thank you, mum". And then her voice seemed to change and she said, "It's Islam". That didn't mean anything to me at the time.

'We said goodbye to each other and we hung up and I didn't hear from Ashlee again.'

Ms Brown said she was convinced the lack of subsequent contact with Ashlee was solely down to her religious conversion and Rannaf controlling his wife. 'I believe Islam killed my daughter,' the 46-year-old said.

'If I could have taken that phone call back I would have not have given her my blessing. I would have said "No, sorry love".

Police initially charged Naddaf with assault and false imprisonment, after paramedics found her dead in the couple's home at Craigieburn, in Melbourne's north, on November 6, 2016.

They later accused Naddaf of killing his wife, but then prosecutors agreed to let him plead guilty to manslaughter.

Italy turns away ITALIAN ship from its ports because it had rescued migrants as anti-migrant minister condemns 'do-gooders'

Italy has turned away an Italian ship from its ports because it had rescued migrants - as the country's anti-migrant interior minister blasted 'do-gooders.'

A commercial ship that supplies oil platforms off the coast of Libya pulled 66 migrants to safety on Monday, but it was told not to bring them to Italy, an Interior Ministry source said.

Italy was sticking to a hardline policy on new arrivals as it presses European allies to share the burden of hosting an influx of displaced people.

Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli, who oversees the coast guard and the country's ports, said the migrants had been transferred to an Italian coast guard vessel on Tuesday after some of them threatened the lives of the Italian crew.

They will be brought to Italy, one source said, though the interior ministry source would not confirm.

The commercial ship picked up the migrants though it had been told Libyan patrol boats were coming to retrieve them, the interior ministry source said.

Meanwhile,  Italy's hard-line, anti-migrant interior minister Matteo Salvini challenged the 'do-gooders' who want to open Italy's ports to migrants to visit the San Ferdinando slum in Reggio Calabria.

He vowed to enforce only 'limited, controlled and qualified' immigration as he toured a crime-laden migrant shantytown in the southern Calabria region.

There, he heard of shameless farmers exploiting migrant workers and women being forced into prostitution to get by. Last month, a migrant was killed in San Ferdinando by his former boss.

'The Libyan ports are more than safe and as minister I can guarantee you that the good times are over for the traffickers,' Salvini added during a visit to a camp for migrant fruit and vegetable pickers in the southern region of Calabria.

Salvini has launched a crackdown on migration, closing Italy's ports to aid groups that rescue migrants and vowing to renegotiate the terms of European missions in the Mediterranean to prevent migrants from disembarking in Italy.

The move comes two days before a meeting of European interior ministers in the Austrian city of Innsbruck, where German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer wants his far-right Italian counterpart to agree to take back migrants who arrive at its borders from Italy.

'What is certain is that for Italy there is no plan to take back who has gone abroad. It's the last thing that could happen,' Salvini said in an interview with Il Messaggero newspaper.

'If the Germans and the Austrians are thinking only about sending migrants back to us, helping us close the external borders first would be a step forward,' he said.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's government teetered on the brink of collapse last week as Seehofer's Bavarian conservatives demanded a unilateral tightening of German border controls that she was prepared to concede only in the framework of a European agreement.

Italy's new government, which took office on June 1, has helped thrust immigration back on to the European agenda by closing its ports to humanitarian ships that rescue migrants off the coast of Libya, and it has so far refused to accept migrants sent back from the German border.

Thieves Find Riches in Golden State’s Prop 47

Many Californians had high hopes for Proposition 47, a ballot initiative passed in November 2014 with 60 percent voter approval. The measure reduced penalties for some crimes, including certain drug violations, and helped relieve overcrowding in state prisons.

But while Prop 47 succeeded in meeting those objectives, it also triggered a wave of “smash-and-grab” motor-vehicle burglaries and a surge of retail shopliftings. For this reason, Prop 47 has earned the dishonor of receiving Independent Institute’s fifth California Golden Fleece® Award, recognition given quarterly to state or local government programs or laws that swindle taxpayers or break the public trust.

By raising the monetary threshold for a felony theft to $950 in property value, up from $500 before the measure passed, Prop 47 lowered thieves’ expected cost of criminal violations. Thus, “Prop 47 de-prioritizes justice for California residents and businesses, who are now increasingly victims of vandals and thieves operating with near impunity,” writes Independent Institute Senior Fellow Lawrence J. McQuillan, in his new report, California Property Crime Surge Is Unintended Consequence of Proposition 47.

After delving into the damage caused by Prop 47, the report issues several recommendations. These include lowering the threshold for a felony to property valued at closer to the pre-Prop-47 amount of $500. Also, when sentencing a thief, courts should be allowed to consider the total combined value of all stolen property across multiple incidents. Law enforcement should make property crimes a higher priority, pursuing arrests even for small crimes, so that track records of criminal activity are established.

Ultimately, people will help by reporting more crimes when they gain more confidence that law enforcement is taking the problem more seriously. Residents and businesses should also invest more in security technology and use social media to monitor and discourage criminal activity. “Property crimes produce true victims, McQuillan writes. “Californians deserve a legal system that provides true justice.”

Political correctness is most pervasive in universities and colleges but I rarely report the  incidents concerned here as I have a separate blog for educational matters.

American "liberals" often deny being Leftists and say that they are very different from the Communist rulers of  other countries.  The only real difference, however, is how much power they have.  In America, their power is limited by democracy.  To see what they WOULD be like with more power, look at where they ARE already  very powerful: in America's educational system -- particularly in the universities and colleges.  They show there the same respect for free-speech and political diversity that Stalin did:  None.  So look to the colleges to see  what the whole country would be like if "liberals" had their way.  It would be a dictatorship.

Dallas Plugs into Electric Buses       Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

If some of the buses making their way through downtown Dallas seem to be a little quieter and cleaner, that’s because they are.

The Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) agency has launched seven new battery-electric-powered, 35-foot buses to travel its 19-mile D-Link circulator through downtown. The electric buses are replacing the last of DART’s diesel fleet. Today, the vast majority of DART’s roughly 700 vehicles are powered by compressed natural gas.

“We wanted to learn more about electric buses. They are growing in popularity in the industry, but I’m not sure we — as an industry — know all we need to in order to make a complete transition,” said Morgan Lyons, vice president of external relations at DART.

The new electric buses were funded through a $7.6 million Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Low and No Emission Vehicle Deployment Program. In April, the FTA announced the availability of $84.45 million in funding for purchase or lease of low or no-emission vehicles, or their related equipment.

Electric buses are still pricier than their fossil-fuel counterparts, however. DART’s electric buses, built by the California bus company Proterra, carry a price-tag of about $970,000, roughly double the cost of a compressed natural gas-powered bus, according to DART officials. However, given the cheaper costs of operating and maintaining an electric bus, a number of transit agencies are rationalizing the added expsnse, particularly when they are being paid for via federal grant funds. Also, charging infrastructure keeps improving, making the buses easier and quicker to recharge, even while it is in service.

“The vehicles have a range of 30 miles and are charged during a scheduled route stop,” Lyons explained. “It takes about five minutes to fully charge the buses for the 19-mile route.”
The bus pulls under [the charger,] and docks to charge,” he added.

It’s not just Dallas that’s going electric. Last month the Chicago Transit Agency (CTA) announced a $32 million deal with Proterra to purchase 20 electric buses. The move will make CTA’s electric bus fleet one of the largest in the country.

Chicago currently has two electric buses in operation, which have saved CTA some $24,000 a year in fuel costs, along with $30,000 in maintenance costs, according to a CTA press release.

“CTA is at the forefront of pursuing new technologies, including electric buses, which have performed very well — exceeding expectations and providing reliable, comfortable transportation to our customers,” said CTA President Dorval R. Carter Jr., in a statement.

In May, the San Francisco Metro Transit Agency (SFMTA) announced plans to only purchase electric buses, starting in 2025, with the goal of having a fully electric fleet by 2035. San Francisco operates the largest fleet of electric “trolley buses” — buses tethered to an overhead electric line — in the country. And all of the system’s electric buses, cable cars, streetcars and light-rail trains are powered by emission-free hydro-electric power.

Electric buses can also be found in Albuquerque, N.M., Stockton, Calif., Greensboro, N.C., Salt Lake City and other cities.
